Storehouse of important vitamins, minerals and fibres, fruits and vegetables are naturally low in calories. They not only make one healthy and energized but also cut the risks of several diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers. Though low in calories, any fruit or vegetable carry the risk of upsetting the stomach in case of excessive intake. Fruits Fruits are a great power snack to quench in-between meal time hunger. Serving a blend of fruits to the dog, cut into chewable pieces, mixing various flavours, will make fruits more interesting for the dogs. While feeding an apple, just take a very good care to remove all the seeds as they are poisonous for the dog. Certain seeds, like apple seeds contain cyanide which may not be harmful for us because of the small dose of toxins. But the same dose can prove poisonous to our dogs. Grapes and raisins are a complete No-No for the dogs; they can cause irreversible kidney damage — just keep the dogs away from them. Vegetables Boiled, cooked, peeled, raw or as scraps — vegetables are good for your dog. The fresh and crunchy vegetables like carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and spinach are good for health and do a lot of good to the teeth of the dog as well. Sweet potatoes, green beans, pumpkin, bottle guard, peas, tomatoes compulsorily ripe and potatoes boiled or mashed are also much loved veggies. Onions are not be ingested by the dogs in any form raw, cooked, dried, powered as it can damage the red blood cells of the canine. Garlic is also capable of harming the red blood cells of the dog; some people argue that garlic in small quantities act as natural antibiotic. Raw veggies can be eaten by dog but when it comes to relatively greater quantity, the vegetables should be boiled and then mashed or cut into chewable pieces. Treats In small amounts, our canine partners can enjoy cottage cheese, peanut butter, popcorns sans salt and butter , sunflower seeds shelled and plain white yogurt. More natural and plain a treat is — minimum sugar, salts, preservatives — more will they suit the health of your dog. BUT do remember that chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, raisins are toxic for your pet. Be very careful with them. Certain dogs, just like humans, can be lactose intolerant; apart from them, milk, in moderate quantities, can be safely digested by all dogs. Cottage cheese is loved by most dogs. Curd and buttermilk are also good sources of prebiotics and calcium. It is recommended that before you offer a new food item to your pet you should consult your vet. Allergies and reactions to particular food stuffs would vary from dog to dog, so it is a good habit to observe your dog each time you feed it a new eatable. Care should be taken to avoid artificial sugar and have minimal salts pinch of salt a day would suffice. If puppies are abandoned then it becomes the responsibility of the owner to get them on the right diet. Use only a bitch milk substitute diet. Cows and goats milk are not suitable milk substitutes, you will need milk similar to that of the dog. When choosing bottle feeding kits, find a teat size that is appropriate, as this may cause problems for feeding. Feed your puppies the right amount. Puppies less than a week old, need feeding every hours; and after this phase, every hours. By their 3rd week, they can start to lap a milk substitute. The bitch normally cleans around the anus of the puppies to stimulate them to defecate. You can achieve this effect with a moist tissue or cotton wool. Puppies cannot regulate their body temperatures for their first 4 weeks, and need to be kept in a temperature-controlled environment. You can use heating lamps, or hot water bottles and heating pads be mindful that the heat source is not too hot. Note: Frequently monitor the puppies, as they may have problems crawling away from the heat source if it gets too hot. If the puppies are cold, supplemental heating should be provided but caution needs to be taken to avoid burns as puppies do not have the same reactions to heat as adult dogs do. If the litter is large, the external temperature does not have to be kept as warm. As puppies huddle together, their body heat provides additional warmth. If the mother feels the puppies are in danger or if there is too much light, she may become anxious and not produce adequate milk. Placing a sheet or cloth over the top of the box to obscure much of the light may resolve the problem. An enclosed box is also an excellent solution. Some dogs, especially first-time mothers, are more nervous than others. Such dogs may attempt to hide their young, even from the owner. Moving the puppies from place to place may endanger the puppies if they are placed in a cold or drafty location. Dogs with this behavior should be caged or confined in a secure, secluded area. By weeks of age, the puppies should eat palatable and highly nutritious puppy food. Tip: If there is a reluctant puppy, tempt him by putting food on its lips or near the nose. Give your puppies nutritious food till they become young, healthy dogs. When the puppies are 8 weeks of age, they should be offered puppy food. A newborn puppy is very susceptible to infections and can die within a few hours of becoming ill. If excessive crying occurs, the mother and entire litter should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. There are several excellent commercial milk replacers available. They require no preparation other than warming. Its temperature can easily be tested on your forearm: it should be about the same temperature as your skin. Goat milk is not recommended as it is far too low in protein and fat. Supplemental feeding may be continued until the puppies are old enough to eat puppy food on their own. If the mother does not produce milk or her milk becomes infected, the puppies will cry. If this occurs, an entire litter can die within 24 to 48 hours. Total milk replacement feeding using the mentioned products or adopting the puppies to another nursing mother is usually required. If replacement feeding is chosen, the feeding amounts listed on the product should be used. Puppies less than two weeks of age should be fed every hours. Puppies two to four weeks of age do well with feedings every hours. Weaning, as described below, should begin at three to four weeks of age. Puppies are born with their eyes closed. Most puppies will begin to open their eyes within seven to fourteen days of birth. If there is swelling, bulging, or discharge underneath the eyelids, they should be opened gently. A cotton ball dampened with warm water may be used to assist opening the lids. If the swelling is due to infection, pus will exit the open eyelids and should be examined by a veterinarian immediately. If the eyes have not opened within fourteen days of age, the puppy should be examined by a veterinarian. Puppies should be observed for their rate of growth. They should double their birth weight in about one week. Careful and routine daily to weekly weighing should be performed to ensure the puppies are growing normally. Failure to gain weight may indicate a problem and the need for veterinary care. At about two weeks of age, puppies should be alert and trying to stand on their own. At three weeks, they generally try to climb out of their box. At four weeks, all of the puppies should be able to walk, run, and play. Initially, make gruel by mixing a milk replacer in puppy food soaked in water and place this mixture in a flat saucer. Next, canned or dry puppy food should be placed in the milk replacer or water until it is soggy. As the puppies lap, they will also ingest the food. The amount of moisture should be decreased daily until they are eating the canned or dry food with little or no moisture added usually by four to six weeks of age. Puppies are protected against many canine diseases before and shortly after birth by passive antibody transfer from their mother. These maternal antibodies protect the puppies against the diseases to which the mother is immune during the first few weeks of life. Although very protective, maternal antibodies last for only a few weeks; after this time, the puppy becomes susceptible to disease. The vaccination program should be started at about six to eight weeks of age. This is the age when many maternal antibodies are beginning to die and the puppy becomes susceptible to infectious disease. Puppies should be vaccinated against canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza virus, and rabies. Other vaccines are also available for certain situations, and will be discussed at the time of the first visit for vaccinations. If, for any reason, the puppies do not nurse during this important period of time, their vaccinations should begin earlier than six weeks of age, depending on likely disease exposure. A veterinarian can make specific recommendations for each particular situation. How to Bottle Feed Puppies Whenever possible, puppies should be nursed and raised by their mothers. There are times, however, when bottle feeding puppies becomes necessary such as when a pup is orphaned. But bottle feeding the wrong thing, the wrong way, the wrong amount or on the wrong schedule can lead to illness or even death. Reconstitute powdered milk replacer per label instructions or use a premixed variety. Warm the bottle by placing it in a cup of hot water until the milk reaches body temperature. Test the nipple before every feeding to ensure that milk only drips from the opening. Puppies are best fed in a belly-down position. Place the pup on your lap or on a towel on a table and insert the nipple into their mouth. Tip the bottle so that any air inside stays away from the nipple. Newborn puppies need to eat every 2 to 3 hours, but as long as they get four to five full-sized meals in the course of the day, nighttime feedings are generally not necessary. A 2 to 4-week-old puppy feeding schedule should consist of feedings every 6 to 8 hours. Young puppies must be stimulated to urinate and defecate. Wipe the area around the anus and penis or vulva with a warm, wet washcloth after every feeding. Commercially available milk replacers provide puppy feeding charts or guidelines for what a typical puppy might eat over the course of a day—for example, 2 teaspoons per 4 ounces bodyweight. Follow these closely, as puppies who drink too much at one feeding can develop diarrhea; and if you have any questions or concerns, talk to your veterinarian. How to Wean Puppies As for a 5-week-old puppy feeding schedule, this is around when most people will start to wean their puppies. For what to feed puppies who are weaning, use a commercially made, high-quality balanced food. Kibble should be softened with water or broth to a soupy texture, or you can add a little extra water to wet puppy food. To get the puppies interested, dip your finger into the mush and then let them lick it. Puppies quickly learn to lap up the food. Make sure each pup is getting their fair share. Separate dog bowls given under supervision is ideal. While feeding puppies your weaning mix, there is no standard set of directions for how much a puppy should eat. Continue to weigh your puppies daily. You want pups that are growing but not overweight. If the puppies are still nursing a bit, figure on offering them three or four meals a day as a puppy feeding schedule. Toy and small breed pups may need some extra snacks, as they are susceptible to hypoglycemia low blood sugar. Nutritional weaning is complete when the puppies are eating only puppy food and no longer nursing at all. When litters and moms are kept together, pups are usually eating only puppy food at around 8 weeks of age. Feeding Your Pup After Weaning Once puppies are fully weaned, continue to watch their diet and their weight. What food to feed your puppy Two forms of puppy food typically come to mind—kibble or dry food and canned or wet food. However, there are now several other healthy options available, including dehydrated and fresh or frozen food. Canned and fresh food options typically have a higher moisture content than kibble or dehydrated food, which can make it easier for puppies who are still using baby teeth to chew and swallow their food. If you want to stick to kibble, it helps to moisten the food with water before your young puppy begins eating. In regards to nutrition, the most important thing to ensure is that your puppy gets a suitable mix of protein, fat, calcium and calories. Since puppies have different caloric and nutritional needs than adult dogs, a diet specially formulated for puppies is often the clearest option. How to Prepare Homemade Puppy Food People who are pet lovers want to give their dog the best to eat but most of us will agree that dog food available in the market is either too expensive or not of a satisfying quality. To protect your dog from deficiencies and diseases, it is very important to give a balanced diet to your dog. If there is a lack of essential vitamins and minerals in their diet, it can impact their coat, behaviour and development. In puppies, it can happen in just a few months. In general, puppies need about twice as many calories per day than their adult counterparts. According to the Committee on Nutrient Requirements of Cats and Dogs of the National Academy of Science, a pound puppy that is expected to weigh 33 pounds at adulthood needs to eat about calories per day. In addition, puppies need more protein, fat, vitamins and minerals than adult dogs. First, take care of the following things while selecting ingredients. Dogs are carnivores and need a protein based diet. Meat options that you can give to your dog are: lamb, pork, turkey, chicken, etc. Do not compromise on the quality of the meat when you are taking it for your dog. You can also feed your dog fish but occasionally. It can provide dogs with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Vegetables that you can include are : squash, pumpkin, zucchini, carrots, peas, beets, yams, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and sweet potato. However you can not give every vegetable to your dog and the vegetables that you need to avoid are: onion, potato, tomato, bell peppers, spinach, raw beans, garlic, leek, chard and beet greens. They contain no nutritional value for dogs and basically just go right through the digestive tract which can harm them. Carbohydrates are often the main cause of many canine diseases, including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease and allergies hence you need to avoid feeding them corn, wheat and potatoes. Talk to a nutritionist before giving any supplements to your dog. If yes,then you are at the right place. Ideally you should give full meals to your dog not more than twice a day. In case you are unable to buy dry food and want to give this as a regular diet, you can do so without any harm, just make sure to add a few supplements like beaphar salmon oil. This is because, while chicken has abundant amount of protein, it lacks omega fatty acids otherwise found in fish. For puppies without developed teeth, make sure to avoid hard bones. You can also add a variety of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, cabbage, carrots, beans, apple. Also the chicken broth you get while boiling chicken, be sure to include it in the meal. Also, make sure the brand you are using is free from hydrogenated oils, excessive salt and harmful sweeteners like xylitol. Cheese too works well as treats in small quantity. Be sure to not feed too much cow milk cheese as it may cause loose motion. Also, cheese is rich in fat and some dogs may be lactose intolerant. Curd and yogurt in small quantities are acceptable. To spice things up, you may add vegetables, eggs or rice for a fuller meal. Turkey is also harmless for dogs. You can give boiled sweet potato, ghee in limited quantity , potato, carrot, ginger. You can give your dog sugarcane, watermelon, guava, cucumber, mango, pineapple or banana. Just avoid citrus fruits like lemon, orange, and fruits that are too salty or sour. You should be in the clear. Apple can be given but seeds need to be taken out as they contain traces of cyanide which is poisonous for your dog even in small quantity. Such cream Golden Retrievers are frequently being touted as being healthier, of having better temperament, of having stronger longevity and the implicit suggestion is that they therefore are more valuable than the more golden-colored Golden Retrievers bred in North America. Due to these common marketing ploys the average puppy buyer sometimes mistakes such light-colored Golden Retrievers for being a separate breed. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is only one Golden Retriever breed, governed by the breed standard endorsed by various recognized Kennel Clubs around the world. The Golden Retriever Club of America would like to emphasize to breeders and puppy buyers alike that the cream color has always been part of the full spectrum of colors found in our breed. Feathering may be lighter than rest of coat. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized according to its extent. Allowable light shadings are not to be confused with white markings. Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity. Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair is a serious fault. This broad range of color is not only commonly found around the world, but both light and dark shades can also occur in the very same Golden Retriever litter, with full siblings varying in color from very light cream to a rich gold. MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Short-haired breeds typically don't require much in the way of grooming, but pugs are an exception to that rule. Regular baths and frequent brushing keep his coat clean and in good condition. Monthly Bath Sporting a short, double-layered coat doesn't mean he doesn't get dirty or relieve you of regular bath time duty. Your pug needs a monthly bath to keep clean and remove any lingering odors he may have acquired since his last wash. More frequent bathing can dry and irritate his skin, so unless he's gone frolicking in the mud or found something stinky to play with, stick with a bath schedule of every four to six weeks. A quick wipe down with a towel will remove most of the water and nature will do the rest. You can also use a hairdryer set on a cool temperature to help dry him faster. Watch the temperature, however, as letting your pug air dry in cooler temperatures may encourage a cold. Wrinkle Care The distinctive wrinkles on your pug's face may tug at your heartstrings, but they can also offer a nice, warm place for fungal infections to form. Don't give them a chance. Wipe out the wrinkles at least a few times a week, and especially after a bath, to make sure they're dry and clean. Use a baby wipe, a cotton ball or a washcloth to get inside them and remove any dirt, oils or moisture that may offer a home to wayward bacteria. A Hairy Problem You wouldn't know it to look at him, but pugs are heavy shedders, especially in the summer. Their coats are double-layered, offering a smooth, long layer on top and a fluffy, shorter layer underneath. This means you will find their tan hair everywhere. Pugs are known for having sensitive skin and facial skin folds that need special attention. But how often should a Pug be bathed? Some dogs may need a bath more often if they roll in something unpleasant, while others can do with just a few baths per year. So, sticking to a particular schedule of bathing your Pug will be difficult, as it will greatly vary in individual dogs, depending on their lifestyle and their skin health. Daily cleaning and checking of their facial skin folds is another matter altogether. Read on below to learn how this schedule works, tips for bathing your Pug, and when to detour from your schedule. The AKC does not consider their coat double. These layers grow independently of one another and require different care. Occasional bathing and regular weekly brushing are required to keep your Pug looking and smelling their best. Frequent and unnecessary bathing will disrupt this fine skin balance and cause the skin to become irritated and dry. Brushing gently and regularly is an efficient way to remove loose hairs during shedding. However, if your Pug gets dirty, rolls in the mud, or finds their way into something stinky, tossing them into the bath may be the only solution. A Pug with skin issues may need a different approach, and we will go through this in more detail, so continue reading. Those wrinkles, alongside the ones around their tail base, require special care, however. Naturally, these warm hiding places can be the breeding ground for unwanted infections. Wanting to be a great Pug owner, regular daily inspection and cleaning of these areas when required, or a minimum of several times each week, if not daily, is crucial in picking up any signs of an infection early on and preventing skin fold dermatitis or even deep skin infection called pyoderma. Having a routine for wrinkle care can keep you on track with their skin health. Make sure you clean them thoroughly and gently, without causing any skin irritation. One of the most important things to remember about Pug wrinkle care is drying. After a bath, wrinkles need to be focused on when it comes to drying. Choose a Bathing Area The first thing you should do when bathing your Pug is choosing the right area. When this is the case, since your Pug is a small dog, you can always use the kitchen sink. Either way, make sure your pup is comfortable before bath time starts. Gather Your Necessities Before you pop your Pug into the water, you should have everything you need on hand. Harsh shampoos cause dry skin and irritation. Instead, you should opt for using shampoos and conditioners designed for sensitive skin and recommended or prescribed by your vet. When your Pug is wet, apply the shampoo and massage their skin gently but thoroughly. Medicated shampoos usually need to stay on for minutes to take effect, as they are antibacterial and antifungal, but it will depend on the individual product. Your vet may recommend washing the whole dog or just certain areas of the body where the issue is, and they will instruct you on how frequently to do so. Make sure all the shampoo is rinsed away before you apply the conditioner. The conditioner needs to stay on for at least 2 minutes before being thoroughly rinsed away. Then bathtime is finished. Keeping your pet's skin and coat clean and healthy is very important, but finding a great shampoo can be harder than the actual grooming! This can be made worse by bathing as things like scented shampoos can act as an irritant, and frequent washes that serve to strip their skin of its natural oils. With that in mind, how often is too often when it comes to bathing your Pug? How often should you bathe a Pug? You should only bathe a Pug every 2 to 6 months in order to maintain a balance between their skin health and hygiene. So, in practical terms, if your Pug gets his coat muddy, and he starts to stink, you need to give them a bath outside of the regular bathing schedule. How to bathe your Pug in 5 simple steps Smaller Pugs can be bathed in a usual bathtub with a shower, but if you have a smaller Pug or a Pug puppy, you can bathe them in a sink with a sink sprayer. I would not bother filling up the tub. This is especially important if your Pug is young, anxious or not a very confident swimmer. This is how you can bathe a pug. Use a specialist dog shampoo Then, get a gentle, soap-free dog shampoo and use your fingers to lather and work the shampoo into the coat. As mentioned, Pugs have extra sensitive skin, which is why a soap-free shampoo is the best option. What is the best shampoo for a Pug smell? It also helps to moisturise their skin, and smells great too. Rinse the shampoo away Rinse the shampoo out and repeat the process as many times as necessary to get all of the dirt out. Give the conditioner no more than two minutes to set and then rinse again thoroughly. Dry your Pug thoroughly To avoid that nasty wet dog smell, you need to dry your Pug completely. Dry your dog with either a towel or a hairdryer on the lowest setting. This is their way to get water off their coat and out of their ears. Additional Pug bathing and washing tips Now you know how to bathe a Pug, I wanted to get into a little bit more detail about how you wash some specific parts of their body in the bath or shower. This includes the outside ear flaps and the corners of the eyes to get rid of any stubborn tear stains. I would do this instead of pouring water on their face — not many dogs like this! Specially made dog ear-cleaning solution contains ingredients that helps to break down and remove wax, as well as anti-bacterial agents that soothes inflammation and prevents infection. You should apply this solution to a damp cotton ball and gentle wipe the inside of the ear use a different cotton ball for each ear in order to prevent spreading infection and check for any injuries, infection, inflammation or scrapes. If you notice something unusual, apply antibiotic ointment and go to your vet in order to seek further advice. If you cut into the quick, this will cause bleeding and extreme pain for your dog. It will also make it incredibly difficult to cut their nails in the future. After cutting the nails, give your Pug a treat so that they have positive associations with the experience. The top layer is thick, waterproof and usually a brown colour, whilst the bottom layer is softer, more sensitive and yet also dense because it acts as an insulator. It is usually white and is more likely to shed during the winter months. Luckily, with Pugs being short-haired breeds, their coat, despite its complexities, is reasonably easy to care for. Brushing: Brush out dirt, prevent shedding and distribute natural oils throughout your Pug by brushing them at least once a week with a bristle brush, a hound grooming glove or or a finer brush if you want to remove excess dirt or hair. Brush your Pug more frequently — up to three times a week — during shedding season. You should also pay attention to any fur around the feet or on the pads of the feet that you might want to trim for tidiness. Freshening up: To keep your Pug clean between baths, doggy dry shampoo is quick and easy to use — you just need to sprinkle it on your dog and then distribute it with a brush. You can also use a spray-on dog conditioner in order to keep the coat looking shiny. How Often a Pug Needs a Bath Most Pugs need to be given a bath once every 3 weeks, even if they appear to be clean and smell just fine. Baths are given at this interval because the body is constantly producing oils that are excreted through the hair follicles. These serve as a natural barrier from external elements and help keep a dog's skin moisturized. But, these do not evaporate; rather, they accumulate. At about the 3-week mark, there is enough body oil on a Pug that skin pores can become blocked and a bad smell can develop if these are not washed away. A bath, done properly, will effectively wash those oils away without stripping the skin and fur, leaving your Pug with a 'clean slate' that will mark the beginning of the 3-week cycle. Another thing that happens during a bath is that loose hairs are freed. And, while the same time interval does not apply to this method of removing dead hairs from a Pug's coat as it does in regard to body oils, it can be advantageous for this to occur every 3 weeks since this can decrease the amount of work you do when brushing the coat to keep shedding under control. Note that you can give your Pug a bath more often than this if the circumstances warrant it; for example, if your Pug rolled around in a muddy puddle or otherwise got so dirty that spot-cleaning won't work or if there are skin issues that require the use of a specialty shampoo. Where to Give a Pug a Bath Young puppies, due to their size and possible fear of water, often do best when given a bath in a kitchen sink. Everything should be removed from the sink and it should be cleaned well and rinsed out. Adult Pugs can also be given baths in a sink, if it is large enough. One washcloth will be to clean your Pug's face, including around the eye area and wrinkles. The other washcloth will be used to dry your Pug's ears and in between the toes since these two areas are prone to skin yeast infections when moisture is left behind. If you find that your Pug slips and slides around, and particularly if this startled your dog or makes giving baths difficult, place a non-slip mat into the sink or tub before you start to help your Pug keep their footing.
