Tasha Desperately Needs A Home Tasha arrived in the UK in and has been in kennels ever since that's nearly 5 years, unwanted and unloved! When she first arrived she was only a puppy but she was afraid and panicked as she was carried away from the van, went to bite the person carrying her and managed to escape and was running loose for 2 weeks. We do believe that this is the reason as to why she doesn't like people she doesn't know. She was caught and now she knows everyone at the kennels she is a happy contented dog. Tasha will need someone who is prepared to visit the kennels maybe a few times to gain her trust. Once she trusts and is settled shewill be your faithful companion. She loves other dogs so would perhaps be better being rehomed where there is another dog in the home. She will follow other dogs and settles quickly in the presence of a happy relaxed dog. She is good with children but unknown with dogs due to lack of socialisation and a no to cats. She is housetrained and travels well in the car. Our assessor found her to be a lovely and friendly dog who is sadly not being walked and therefore pulls on the lead. She is in desperate need of a new home where she will be stimulated and exercised but in return you will have a loving and affectionate dog! Zoey - Staffs This lovely girl is 4 year old Zoey who is in need of a new home. Sadly, Zoey's owner has been unable to exercise her so she is a lively girl, she will bark when people come to the home but our assessor found her to be very friendly and Zoey certainly enjoyed a belly rub or two. She is so eager to please, our assessor took her out and found she would not stray far and came back immediately, excellent obedience. She loves to play with her ball, has no food aggression, sleeps in her crate and travels well. Has previously lived with a male dog but did dominate him and currently lives with a cat but if allowed will chase it; due to her excitable nature it would be best not to rehome with younger children. She is no longer up to date with her vaccinations and has not been spayed or micro-chipped. Zoey is a very much loved dog but sadly not given the time an energetic dog like her needs, she deserves a new loving home where she will enjoy the exercise and stimulation she so desperately needs. Benson - Suffolk Benson is a 1yr old neutered male. He was rehomed by GSDR a few months ago but has returned as there have been changes within the family circumstances, and they can no longer cope with him. Benson has become over protective of his current owner and hence has issues with other dogs when out walking. He needs a firm, experienced owner who will teach him boundaries and acceptable behaviour. This young dog will blossom into a loyal friend with the right guidance. Shiloh - west mids This poor little sad girl is 3 year old Shiloh who is up to date with her vaccinations, is micro-chipped and spayed. She is a very nervous young dog and takes time to settle when visitors arrive but is exceedingly affectionate to her people. She is in desperate need of a home where the new owner will preferably not have any other pets or young children and will be able to devote the time and dedication to this very loving dog. Blue 3 year old entire handsome white German Shepherd who is currently in foster care due to previous owners lack of confidence to control and train. Unfortunately Blue suffers from fear aggression and tries to nip and frighten anyone he first meets but the foster carer can already see improvement day to day and Blue is beginning to trust humans again and be more relaxed and settled within their home. With patience and time preferably the only pet and no children Blue should make a fabulous pet for an experienced GSD home. Micro-chipped, vaccinated and medically fit. Saber Very fit and lively 10 year old, entire. Loves to play and cuddles. Unfortunately due to family constraints Saber is living in a very confined space and left for long periods of time. He has lived with a child but due to his size it would be best to place him with older ones, can live with a steady dog but a definite no to cats!! He was originally found on the streets as a stray and his previous owner spent a lot of time in training him and received a lot of certificates, he even went to work with his owner in the office. We were informed he needed careful introduction to new people he meets but he is now in kennels and has met so many people and staff and has not been an issue; in fact they all adore him. Anyone with experience, looking for a large dog, look no further, Frank is your dog!! Although he currently lives with young children it is advised due to his excitable behaviour and size he is rehomed with much older children, he has not been socialised with other dogs but our assessor said that with time, effort and the right owner he will be fine with them but a definite no to cats. He has been neutered and micro-chipped but his vaccinations are now out of date. Although he never went to puppy class he knows basic commands but gets distracted, with an experienced owner he will make a fantastic dog who is in desperate need of stimulation and exercise. Sadly, as in many of these cases, the breeder was only interested in the money and not the long term welfare of the dog; Rocky has become too much for his current family and are unable to give him the time and stimulation a fabulous dog like him requires. Can you? Tala - Notts This lovely lad is 2 year old Tala who is up to date with his vaccinations and entire. He currently lives with children but would be best placed with much older, more experienced ones, loves to play with other dogs but a definite no to cats. Tala will need firm handling and will need to know who is the leader certainly not him! He is housetrained, travels well and will make a fabulous dog in the right home where he will be stimulated and allowed the chance to have a good run out in the fields. Camy - Lou Camy Lou is a beautiful 5yr old spayed bitch. She is a calm and friendly dog in the house. She loves her walks, being outside and also likes swimming so can be a little excitable when she thinks she is about to go out. Camy Lou has had a rough start to life. Her current owners rescued her a year ago. She was in quite a sorry state but with time and patience they have got her to where she is today. She is insured and vaccinated. Camy Lou is great with people but she suffers from toy aggression. Camy Lou responds to basic commands and has a good recall unless she is distracted by a stick or toy. Her current owners love her dearly but are sadly unable to keep her as she attacked one of their other dogs, while in the home, because of a stick. This gorgeous girl has a lot of love to give and would benefit from an experienced GSD owner with no other pets and no children. Layla - Norfolk Layla is a lovely 2yr old bitch in desperate need of some love and attention. She was being kept in a run down, outside kennel with straw as her only comfort. She is quite underweight and has little muscle tone on her back end. This will improve once she is being fed and exercised more regularly. Her owner is seriously ill and has moved away to be with his family leaving Layla to be looked after by a man, who was trying to help the owner out, but who has struggled due to his own workload and other commitments. This young girl needs time, patience and most of all love to steer her back onto the road to good health. She would ideally suit an experienced owner without young children. Willow - Nuneaton Let me introduce you to the utterly gorgeous, big boy Willow. He is 4 years old 5 in Jul , entire and not vaccinated. Due to his size and strength it would be best to rehome him to a family with much older teenagers or no children at all, definitely no cats and needs to be carefully introduced to other dogs. Our assessor did find him to be a little lively but soon calmed down and Willow enjoyed a fuss and a cuddle. Willow is very large dog and has not be shown any ground rules and therefore his new owners need to work with him but in return they will have a fabulous dog! Buddy - West Mids This lovely dog is 8 years young Buddy who is entire and vaccinations are overdue. He currently lives with a family, a cat, loves to play with other dogs in the park and previously lived with dogs in a former home. The family are no longer able to keep Buddy due to his food aggression and behaviour towards various members of the family. However, our assessor found him to be a lovely, friendly dog who was energetic and this was no doubt due to not getting enough exercise or stimulation. In the right home he would make a fabulous addition and would suit an active family preferably with older children due to his excitable nature. Petra Petra is 5 and unspayed. She has never lived with children but was fine with young children she met out. Petra does not like little dogs or cats, and she will stand up for herself with larger dominating dogs. She has been living with a male GSD and her two 5 month daughters. Friendly with people who are friendly to her. Her recall is good as long as she is not distracted. Petra does have a joint problem on her right rear leg and will struggle if walked more than about 4 miles in a day. Poor Petra has had a horrible start in life. The owner used to beat his wife and no doubt at some stag Petra too. She is very nervous of lighters and matches! She will need confident and understanding owners. Current owner rehoming as mobility issues walking all of the dogs! Louie - Coventry This lovely friendly lad is 8 years young Louie. He is neutered, vaccinated and house trained. He is sadly overweight due to lack of exercise but when our assessor took him out she found he eventually walked well on the lead after initially pulling and responded well to commands but could not test his recall. A definite no to cats and dogs he will dominate them so would be best placed as an only dog and to further socialise with other dogs. Louie is a water baby, loves to swim but doesn't like to go out of his depth, travels well in the car but hates fireworks! A friendly dog who really enjoys the attention he deserves and needs a home soon! Bruno - Cambs Bruno is a longhaired 4yr old entire male. He currently lives in a barn but is chained up as he keeps escaping and has killed the neighbours prize chickens. The neighbours have threatened legal action if Bruno is not re-homed soon. While chained Bruno shows aggression and will nip, but when off the chain he is a completely different character and is very friendly. He responded to simple commands and took treats from our assessor. Bruno is good with children, other dogs and cats. We are unsure if he is house trained but he does not mess in his barn. He is not currently walked and so will need some lead training. He shows no aggression when allowed to be free and will make a great addition to the right home. This young man just needs a chance to be a pet rather than a yard dog. Bailey - Suffolk Bailey is a friendly 5yr old neutered male. He has shown some aggression issues in his current home but he is being left to his own devices for long periods and is under stimulated. Our volunteer found Bailey to be very social and saw no signs of aggression. He needs an experienced GSD owner that can spend the time needed to channel Baileys attentions in a positive direction. Can you offer Bailey the home he so urgently needs? Jake - Suffolk Jake is a 3yr old neutered male. He is currently being left alone for long periods, not walked or groomed. Despite his lack of attention Jake is a friendly boy. He needs an experienced owner who can go back to basics and teach him some manners and give him some guidance on acceptable behaviour. Jakes long coat needs a good groom. This young dog is desperate for a home where he will be loved and receive the attention and exercise that every dog deserves. Theo This beautiful boy is 4 year old Theo who will need an experienced owner to provide him with time for exercise and socialisation. He currently lives with another dog and children but would now be best placed with much older teenagers. Although he lives with another dog and gets on well with her, he does not like other dogs when out. He is fully vaccinated and neutered. He requires a home with GSD experience who will guide and stimulate him, in return you will have a fabulous loving dog. He is up to date with vaccinations, neutered and micro-chipped. He is good with children but will need to be homed as the only pet as he likes to enjoy all the fuss and tummy tickles for himself; and following an attack by another dog when he was only 15 weeks old he can no longer tolerate other dogs or any other furry creatures. He is house-trained and has good basic commands. He has unfortunately been diagnosed with hip dysplasia but thanks to his good muscle tone the vet has advised he does not require an operation; the current pet insurance is transferrable. Our assessor found him to be a friendly and pleasant dog, walked well on the lead; his current owner sadly has to give him up as she is unable to control him around other dogs and the other pets in the home. He will suit an experienced owner who will understand his behaviour and provide him with the guidance and manners he requires. Lulu - Nuneaton This beautiful little girl is 3 year old Lulu who is fully vaccinated and micro-chipped and spayed and currently in foster. She has previously lived with children and is ok with most dogs but cannot tolerate small ones and definitely no cats. She is fully house trained but will require further training as she will pull on the lead and needs to learn a few manners. She suffers with dust and food allergies and is currently on medication and a special diet for this; she is currently insured and this is transferrable. She will require a firm handler who can provide her with the guidance and socialization she requires as well as the care needed with her allergy. A lovely girl who needs a chance to enjoy another loving home. He went to attack Ash on a number of occasions, Ash soon showed him who the boss was good lad. This shows he can be ok with the correct guidance. He is a big strong boy so pulls on lead. We would recommend that no small children as he is a very big lad. You are his life, his love, his leader. Males weigh an average of 60 to 70 pounds, requiring 3 to 5 cups of food. This weight range requires 2 to 4 cups of food per day. On top of a caloric increase, an active Boxer will also need a protein-rich diet to feed their muscles. Seniors need to eat foods that cater to their life stage to keep them capable, happy, and healthy for their remaining years. A Boxer transitions into the senior category, usually around 6—9 years of age. If you have your dog on dog food for all life stages, it might be appropriate to continue this diet. A lower-calorie food will also help to prevent your dog from becoming overweight. If your senior has specific health issues, it might be best to feed them a specific diet that helps with their condition. As time goes on, you can work with your vet to accommodate their special dietary needs. It is formulated specifically for later years. Some dogs have voracious appetites that are never satisfied. It seems like you barely get it into the bowl before they suck it up like a vacuum cleaner. Free-Feeding—this practice involves making food available to your dog at all times. The danger with this method is that large dogs like Boxers are susceptible to bloat, or gastric dilation-volvulus GDV. Bloat happens when the dog eats too quickly, causing gas to fill the abdomen. It can be fatal. This method can also make overeating seem like the norm, which causes bad manners. Feeding your dog smaller, more frequent meals is a better alternative to free-feeding. Slow-Feeder Bowls—a great way to slow your pooch down, allowing them to digest their food properly, is to give them food in a slow feeder. It gives your Boxer unique designs to eat around, stimulating their mental curiosity while slowing them down. What Foods Are Bad for Boxers? Some things to look out for are: Corn. Besides a nutritious diet, Boxer owners must know the right time to feed their pups. Boxer puppy feeding schedule is made easy with this Boxer feeding chart. Larger and stronger Boxer pups push their weaker siblings aside to get the most food. This is why many Boxer breeders and owners make sure that all puppies get enough food. Two week old tiny Boxer puppies are new to this world and rely completely on the Boxer mother. They should always stay with their mother because her breast milk is their main and only source of nutritious food. During this period, two week old Boxer puppies open their eyes for the first time. However, they are still dependent on the Boxer mommy. Even though they are double the size at three weeks of age, Boxer pups are still nursing. During the period between four to six weeks, their teeth grow bigger and the Boxer mommy will wean them off soon. At four weeks of age, the Boxer mother starts weaning her puppies. To help the Boxer puppy transition from milk to store-bought puppy food, it is time that you try making puppy mush. Try offering your Boxer pup this mixture up to four times per day but make sure not to overfeed it. Too much puppy mush can cause your Boxer pup loose stools and diarrhea. However, most Boxer puppies will need some time to fully get used to their new diet. That said, you will need to soften the puppy food that your seven week old Boxer puppy is eating. You should give your Boxer puppies high-quality food three to four times a day. Boxer puppies at this age love to eat, so make sure not to overfeed them two cups per day. This means that your Boxer puppy is totally ready for proper mealtime! The feeding schedule should include: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They will also have more energy, which may necessitate consuming more calories or eating larger portions. Its little body needs all the nutrients from high quality food it can get. At this point, your Boxer puppy eats twice the amount of food an adult Boxer dog would eat. Even though your eleven week old Boxer puppy has an enormous appetite, you must not leave food to its own will. So, every time it is done eating, you should pick up the leftover dog food. Make sure to separate the amount of food in 3 to 4 smaller portions through the day. At six months of age, the Boxer puppy is growing rapidly and you might want to consider home-cooked dog food or introducing it to a raw diet. High-quality commercial dog food is packed with necessary nutrients, but nothing can replace a good home-cooked meal! The period between seven to twelve months of age is when you will want to give your Boxer puppy less food than you would feed a 5 month old Boxer. At twelve months of age, Boxer puppies will do well with two meals per day. However, this depends on the health state and development of your Boxer puppy. If the Boxer pup is more on the skinny side, then you should feed it more food than described in feeding charts. Just make sure to ask your vet to help you develop a balanced diet for your Boxer pup. Fully grown male adult Boxer dogs reach between 65 to 80 pounds, whereas adult female Boxer dogs weigh a bit less, reaching anywhere from 50 to 65 pounds. Adult Boxer dogs should be fed two meals per day — breakfast and dinner. The most important thing is to take away leftover dog food when your Boxer dog is done eating. Due to the fact that the Boxer dog breed is prone to bloating a life-threatening condition , owners and breeders should be cautious around feeding them too much food. If you have owned Boxers or if you are currently a proud owner of the Boxer, then you know how highly energetic these pooches are. Well, due to their high energy levels, Boxers require a lot of exercise. With frequent exercise comes heavy calorie burning after which your Boxer dog needs more food! Besides high energy levels, Boxer dogs are medium breed dogs that inherit faster metabolism than an average medium-sized dog. That said, Boxer dogs require food that is rich in calories and nutrients to make up for the energy that they use during the day. The best Boxer food will be one that is made for active dogs and includes all the vitamins and minerals they require to stay healthy and fit. Young Boxer puppies should eat more than a cup per day, while older Boxer puppies can consume up to three cups daily because their nutritional needs are higher. Adult Boxers require about 40 fewer calories per pound of body weight than puppies. That said, daily food intake for adult Boxer dogs typically ranges from 3 to 5 cups, depending on their weight. Adult Boxer dogs should be fed twice a day, while Boxer puppies must be fed 3 to 4 meals per day. All dog breeds require basic ingredients in dog food such as protein, carbs, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. But the Boxer dog breed is a bit different. Because Boxers are hyper dogs with insane energy levels! So, a good diet for a Boxer pup must consist of basic ingredients, but you may also want to boost it with home-cooked food and supplements. This is why you have to choose the best source of protein for your Boxer dog. Poultry, beef, and seafood are excellent sources of animal protein for Boxer dogs because they are easy on their digestive system. Fatty acids like omega-6 and omega-3 are great for your Boxer dog because they give its coat extra shine and make its skin healthier. With a proper diet that is packed with vitamins and fatty acids, Boxer coat colors become more vivid and its coat sheds less! Fruit and veggies are also great for Boxer dogs because they are packed with vitamins and minerals which are essential for a healthy metabolism. However, at the time of sale the salesperson told us, it will take one to two weeks which we agree. I agree that they can take their time to make sure their puppies get out of the store healthy and safe, but I think they may need to arrange the way how they sell this dog because they may need to do all the their follow ups with the vet before putting them available for the costumers and also tell your costumers that it could take a month or more to release the puppies, so the costumer can make a decision of continuing with the purchase or not. Pugs are a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. Your Pug's Health We know that because you care so much about your dog , you want to take good care of her. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Pug is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions against common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Some of the blood supply that should go to the liver goes around it instead, depriving the liver of the blood flow it needs to grow and function properly. If your friend has PSS, his liver cannot remove toxins from his bloodstream effectively. Surgery may be needed, but in some cases, we can treat with a special diet and medication. Eye Problems Not many things have as dramatic an impact on your dog's quality of life as the proper functioning of his eyes. Unfortunately, Pugs can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs for concern. Because your Pug has eyeballs that naturally protrude, he is more vulnerable to eye injuries. Scrapes or punctures to the cornea the protective covering on the eyeball are the most common injuries. Not only do eye injuries hurt, they can become infected and affect his vision. Call us at right away if your pet has any problems with his eyes. A damaged cornea is painful and should be treated immediately. Medication and sometimes surgery may be required. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea the surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. Entropion can occur in any dog breed, however, your Pug is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS, is common in Pugs. KCS reduces the amount of fluid produced by the tear glands such that they are no longer able to keep the eyes moist. This results in sore, itchy eyes and infections. Symptoms of KCS include a dull, dry appearance or thick discharge from the eyes, squinting, and pawing at the eyes. Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a fairly common disease in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but Pugs have an above average incidence. Dogs with diabetes are unable to regulate the metabolism of sugars in their bodies and require daily insulin injections. Diabetes is a serious condition and one that is important to diagnose and treat as early as possible. Symptoms include increased eating, drinking, and urination, along with weight loss. If he shows signs, we will conduct lab tests to determine if he has this condition and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment requires a serious commitment of time and resources. Well-regulated diabetic dogs today have the same life expectancy as other canines. Allergies In humans, allergies to pollen, mold, or dust make people sneeze. In dogs, rather than sneezing, allergies make their skin itchy. The feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most commonly affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs of allergies. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for these conditions. Mange Demodex is a microscopic mite that lives in the hair follicles of all dogs. In mild cases, pet owners may notice a few dry, irritated, hairless lesions. These often occur on the face or feet and may or may not be itchy. Secondary skin infections may also occur. Prompt veterinary care is important to keep the disease from getting out of hand. Many pets seem to outgrow the problem, while others require lifelong management. Skin Infections Your Pug is prone to a form of skin infection called lip-fold pyoderma, which occurs because the folds of skin along the lower jaw are usually moist. Bacteria and yeast can readily thrive here and cause a reddened, smelly area that is uncomfortable for your dog. When symptoms are severe, the excess skin folds can also be surgically removed. It can cause severe and often irreversible damage to the brain. Middle-aged, small breed dogs such as Pugs are more susceptible than other breeds. Symptoms may be acute, leading rapidly to death; they may progress chronically over several months; or occasionally, only the eyes are affected. Treatment includes corticosteroids, but the response to therapy is variable and the prognosis is generally poor. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Pugs. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. With diligent observation at home and knowledge about the diseases that may affect your friend's bones, joints, or muscles, you will be able to take great care of him throughout his life. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. Stiffness in your Pug's elbows or hips may become a problem for him, especially as he matures. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is also sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. And keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Young Pugs may be prone to a painful degenerative hip condition called Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. The exact cause of this condition is still not completely understood, but it is thought to be caused by a reduced blood supply to the hip, which causes the femoral head the top of the thigh bone to become brittle and fracture easily. Usually occurring between six and nine months of age, LCP causes pain and lameness in one or both rear legs, and often requires surgery. Sometimes your Pug's kneecap patella may slip out of place. This is called patellar luxation. You might notice that your pet, while running, suddenly picks up a back leg or skips and hops for a few strides. He might then kick his leg out sideways to pop the kneecap back in place. These are common signs of patellar luxation. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from luxating further. Spinal Deformities Pugs are more likely than other canines to be born with spinal deformities, a condition called hemivertebrae, which may lead to spinal cord damage, instability, or disability. Mast Cell Tumor Mast cell tumors are a particularly nasty type of skin cancer found more often in Pugs than other breeds. The sooner these tumors are surgically removed, the better. Unfortunately, mast cell tumors often look very similar to other kinds of skin lumps and lesions, many of which are not harmful. Therefore, all suspicious lumps should be tested and surgically removed as soon as possible. Many cancers are cured by surgical removal, so early detection is critical. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a neurologic condition, similar to ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease in people, that causes weakness and poor nerve function in the hind legs. It affects Pugs more frequently than other breeds. If your dog has this disease, he will become increasingly weak and disabled in the hind legs, eventually suffering from paralysis in his hindquarters, which also leads to incontinence. Rehabilitation, exercise, acupuncture, and dietary supplements can be helpful, but there is no cure for degenerative myelopathy. A genetic test is available to determine whether your dog is at risk for this heritable disease. Bladder or Kidney Stones There are a few different types of stones that can form in the kidney or in the bladder, and Pugs are more likely to develop them than other breeds. Call us immediately! Respiratory Distress Syndrome Respiratory distress syndrome, also known as brachycephalic syndrome, affects dogs with a short nose, like your Pug. Short-nosed dogs have the same amount of tissue in their noses and throats as longer-nosed dogs, but with less area to contain it. As a consequence, the soft palate at the back of the roof of the mouth is too long and may hang down into the airway. All of these differences can lead to a narrow and obstructed airway such that many of these dogs can barely breathe! Watch for exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing, bluish gums, or fainting. With his short nose, your pet is also more likely to develop other problems, such as flatulence from excessive air intake, pneumonia from aspirating food, and heat stroke. In severe cases, surgical correction may be recommended to alleviate airway obstruction. Taking Care of Your Pug at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Pug live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Her deep wrinkles need to be cleaned and dried often to prevent infections. She is well suited for apartment living; she will need a daily walk and regular inside play. She is sensitive to temperature extremes; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Pug needs help.

In both dogs and humans, diarrhea can be an effective way for the body to purge itself of a toxin or pathogen. But sometimes—especially if it lasts for more than 48 hours—diarrhea can be a sign of an underlying health problem. Figuring out the true underlying cause of dog diarrhea can be tricky, even for a specialist. Fortunately, a gut health analysis can often uncover vital clues. Loose stool can be a minor event or a serious condition. Diarrhea can be acute meaning that it begins rather suddenly and lasts more than 48 hours or chronic lasting more than three weeks, sometimes varying in intensity from day to day. Sometimes the reason for it is obvious, but often the exact cause can be surprisingly difficult to identify. Here are some of the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs. Something Your Dog Ate In any case of digestive upset, it makes sense to look first at what your dog has been eating. A food intolerance or food allergy is another possibility. Diarrhea is an adaptation that helps scavenging animals get rid of the toxins and pathogens such material can contain. In many of these cases, the diarrhea will resolve itself in a day or two. The stress trigger for a dog could be fireworks, dehydration, or an injury. A dog who has been hit by a car, for example, will often display signs of shock that include diarrhea. The mechanisms are the same as in a human athlete: when the muscles are working hard, the body sends more blood flow to the muscles, directing it away from other areas, like the digestive system. That redistribution of blood flow also raises the core body temperature and produces fluctuations in certain hormones. All of these changes can contribute to acute diarrhea. Exercising in hot weather is sometimes a sufficient cause in itself, since diarrhea and nausea are common reactions to overheating. Parasites and Pathogens Intestinal parasites—such as Giardia, tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms—are well-known to cause diarrhea in dogs. So are pathogens like the bacteria Clostridioides difficile C. Take a poop sample to your veterinarian for parasite and pathogen screening. In this condition, called inflammatory bowel disease IBD —also known as chronic enteropathy CE —inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract interferes with its ability to process food and absorb nutrients. This imbalance or dysbiosis in the gut is associated with a reduction or loss of the beneficial bacteria it needs to function effectively. Though the exact causes of IBD in any given case can be difficult to figure out, several potential treatments are available. Medication Side Effects Some medications can cause diarrhea as a side effect. Antibiotics are one such example, which are used to treat bacterial infections. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea can be reduced, and even prevented with taking the probiotic yeast, S. Bacterial infections as well as viral infections —such as the canine parvovirus parvo —can lead to diarrhea. So can hormonal imbalances and even some cancers. Diarrhea may point to acute disease of the liver, pancreas, or kidneys. Small Intestine vs. Large Intestine Large Intestine Diarrhea Large intestine diarrhea tends to involve more frequent bowel movements. The stool is semi-formed and may contain mucus or flecks of red blood. You might notice your dog straining, looking painful, or trying repeatedly to poop without producing much. Small Intestine Diarrhea With small intestine diarrhea, the stool piles or puddles are typically larger than normal. Particles that would normally be absorbed by the small intestine instead pass on into the large intestine, pulling water along with them and creating a larger volume of poop. Small intestine diarrhea tends to be less frequent, with no urgency and usually no visible blood. Small intestine diarrhea is more likely to be accompanied by vomiting, nutrient deficiencies, and weight loss. If blood is present, it is dark and tarry because it has been digested, unlike the fresh blood found in large intestine diarrhea. You may think of diarrhea as watery puddles, but completely liquid poop is really just one end of the scale. Diarrhea can refer to a range of consistencies, from moist but distinct piles to shapeless blobs to puddles. Dog Poop Color Chart Brown. Yellow or gray dog poop can point to serious health issues, such as diseases of the liver, pancreas, or gallbladder. Such diseases can affect the amount of bile being produced and how the bile is being processed in the intestines. Yellow poop may also arise from a food sensitivity; excess mucus or fat can give poop a yellow hue. Green stool may mean your dog has been eating a lot of grass , possibly as a reaction to an upset stomach. Diseases of the liver or pancreas can also cause green poop. Or your dog might have eaten something that contained green food coloring. Poop with a shiny or oily-looking surface may contain excess mucus, which can be caused by inflammation of the large intestine colitis. Pale, clay-colored. Pale or clay-colored dog feces may also indicate problems with the digestion of fats, usually due to a lack of bile. Blue colored poop should always be treated as an emergency, because it may indicate that your dog ingested rat poison. Most often occurring in smaller breeds, HGE requires prompt medical attention. However, eating beets which are totally benign can also cause pink poop. Red streaks. Infectious diseases like parvovirus, anal gland sac infections, and parasites like whipworms and hookworms are all possible causes. Any signs of distress - pacing, restlessness, panicked behavior High fever - anything above .Allergies can cause additional symptoms, such as dry flaky skin, and hot spots. A few Boxers have had issues with chicken, beef, fish or eggs. In addition, certain spices can trigger an allergy, as well as soy, wheat, or other grains. Intestinal parasites: Here's something we never want, but it happens. Giardia or Coccidia can cause diarrhea. Giardia is a small parasite; kin to an ameba and this protozoan is not friendly. It's typically transmitted through water, in a puddle or other contaminated water. Even river or lake water on a hiking trip, and on rare occasions tap water can carry this parasite. This parasite causes gas and lots of diarrhea. Because the parasite runs in a cycle; it can seem to go away, and then come back, over and over again with almost IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome type symptoms. It has a treatment available by the veterinarian if your dog has contracted it. Coccidia, which also causes diarrhea in dogs, is a different parasite and has a different treatment than giardia. Canines can contract this parasite via contact with infected feces, or sometimes from their mother. That doesn't mean the breeder or shelter wasn't clean, just that coccidia is a sneaky and resilient parasite. Coccidia is often carried by birds and passes in their droppings onto lawns, parking lots, and other areas of the flyover. It's highly recommended to watch what your Boxer is doing. Don't let them eat feces, sniff or lick at it. Protect them from puddles and melting ice. A few other parasites that can cause diarrhea in puppies, or in some cases adult canines, are roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and threadworms. Ingesting something they are sensitive to: A canine's palate isn't the same as ours. Some dogs think that garbage, trash, decaying leaves, dead mice or birds, plants, and grasses are all things meant to be eaten. And, these can all upset the digestive system or be mildly to severely toxic. Infection and diseases: A lot of acute cases of diarrhea with dogs are caused by a minor bacterial infection that runs its course over a couple of days and then resolves. However, there are other more serious issues that can be at play. This includes: Campylobacteria, seen most often with young pups up to 6 months old. About half of all dogs carry this can be carriers that are healthy, but can pass this on. It's most often picked up when a dog eats the feces of another dog. While the top sign is diarrhea, there can also be straining during bowel movements, fever, vomiting, and enlarged lymph nodes. Inflammatory bowel disease which is catch-all term that is given if a dog has ongoing, chronic diarrhea linked to one of several conditions including allergies, parasites, lowered immune system, and some diseases including colitis. Diagnosing this includes blood testing, urinalysis, stool testing, and other tests. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, and medications to protect the lining of the intestines may be given. In many cases, a change to a different food which includes a switch in both protein and carb sources can help. Other less common but possible reasons for diarrhea include kidney disease, liver disease, cancer , lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Elements to Help Decipher Diarrhea Issues Color, smell, and consistency are all clues: Tarry, sticky black stools can point to upper GI bleeding and warrants an immediate vet visit. Red or red spotting in stools often points to bleeding in the lower GI tract. In those cases, the blood can be coming from small tears or rips in the anus. Yellow or green loose stools. With a puppy, yellow can point to coccidia. Otherwise, yellow or green indicates that food is passing through too quickly to digest completely. Gray can point to a liver-related issue. Foam seen in the diarrhea tends to point to a bacterial infection. Greasy diarrhea can mean the pancreas is having a problem. Give the stomach a break. If diarrhea is moderate to severe, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Do give supplements ; see below. Keep your Boxer hydrated. A lot of water is lost even with one episode of diarrhea. When the ability to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss is insufficient, dehydration can result. This is of particular concern for Boxer puppies and senior Boxer dogs, but is applicable to dogs of all ages. Try some organic chicken broth. After 12 to 24 hours, start your Boxer on a bland diet. This is typically just 1 protein and 1 starch. One of the most tolerated combinations is plain, white, skinless chicken breast diced small and plain white rice or plain oatmeal. However, lean beef and sweet potato are other good options. If you offer chicken, the broth from boiling the chicken is good for your Boxer to drink after it cools to a warm temperature. After 3 days, start to transition back to a regular diet or a new, better food if that was decided. By then, the body should be well-rested. Extra Tips What about Pepto Bismol? This is safe to give to most dogs. However, check with your vet. Some recommend not giving this, in order to allow the body to expel stools as it needs to. But, in some cases, if a dog, especially a puppy, is overwhelmingly stressed, and this can help control diarrhea to some degree. Do not give this to a Boxer that is pregnant or to any dog that is allergic to silicates. The typical dosing is 1 teaspoon for each 20 pounds. You can use this every 6 hours for up to 48 hours. Your vet may suggest a slightly stronger dose. Altering sleeping or living arrangements. When you have to go, you have to go, and your Boxer can't always get there in time. If that is happening to your Boxer puppy, pee pads placed over the floor of a pen or gated off area are a blessing. During this time avoid additional stress for your Boxer. At this time, Boxers don't need playtime with small children; it burns energy, and their reserves are low when dealing with diarrhea. Sore Rear-ends. Puppies and dogs can have red, irritated behinds from the change in acidity from diarrhea. They may lick their behind due to the irritation which only exacerbates the problem. It melts quickly and is a natural antibiotic, and it is very soothing. If you put it on first, then you can't use the Vetericyn afterward as the coconut oil also acts as a bit of a seal. Alternatively, you can cut open a Vitamin E gel tabs. The contents are liquid and slightly sticky. Apply the vitamin liquid to the irritated skin. If you don't see some improvement in 24 hours, broken skin around the anus may have developed an infection. The good news is that if you used Vetericyn, that risk is somewhat mitigated. Otherwise, you may need your vet to prescribe an antibacterial gel, sometimes an antibiotic shot, and occasionally a cone if you have a persistent licker. Some of the conditions that afflict Boxers have a genetic basis, and are more likely to happen to Boxers than to dogs of other breeds. Responsible breeders screen for these conditions, and when possible, avoid breeding dogs with those traits. But these conditions can still happen. Boxers are more likely to develop health problems such as heart problems, degenerative myelopathy, bloat, and ulcerative colitis than other dogs. Boxer Cardiomyopathy Boxers are more likely to develop a specific heart condition than other dogs. The condition, Boxer cardiomyopathy , is actually named after the breed, though other dogs can develop it. The most common sign a dog has Boxer cardiomyopathy is if it has trouble breathing. Your dog might cough or wheeze frequently. Your dog might start panting during walks or playtime. If you think your dog might have Boxer cardiomyopathy, you should avoid exercise until the dog can be examined by its veterinarian. Eventually the weakness will be more apparent, with loss of bowel and urinary control. The dog might struggle to get up because the disease also causes muscle atrophy. Boxers with degenerative myelopathy can become paralyzed by the disease. There is no cure for degenerative myelopathy. But if your Boxer has the disease, there are a few things you can do to help them suffer less. Kinesiology tape has been used successfully to help dogs with degenerative myelopathy. A dog that spends lots of time lying down is at risk of bedsores. Boxers that become partially paralyzed by degenerative myelopathy are candidates for wheelchairs. Dog wheelchairs can help to slow down the progression of degenerative myelopathy by removing stress on the joints and allowing more mobility and exercise. Both stress and lack of exercise can contribute greatly to the progression of the disease. Boxers with Bloat Bloat, or gastric dilation , is another health risk that boxers are more likely to suffer from than other dogs. Bloat is a potentially fatal stomach condition that is common in large dogs with deep chests, like boxers and shepherds. Bloat is caused by unhealthy eating habits: if a Boxer eats one large meal a day, or eats too quickly, they run the risk of bloat. If you notice your dog likes to scarf its food, you can give it smaller meals throughout the day. Also, make sure your Boxer does not run around or get over-excited within an hour or two of meals. Panting can cause a dog to swallow air, further expanding the stomach and contributing to bloat. Bloat can sometimes result in Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus. In GDV, the over-filled stomach twists around, cinching the ends closed. This is a true emergency, requiring immediate surgery. Nothing can escape from the twisted stomach, and the blood supply to the stomach and spleen is compromised. In a few hours, the dog can die from loss of blood supply to the stomach as well as physiologic shock. Ulcerative Colitis in Boxers Many Boxers also develop ulcerative colitis. In fact, non-Boxer dogs rarely develop the condition, which may have a genetic basis. Ulcerative colitis is another digestive system problem; dogs with the disease develop ulcers in their intestines. Boxers with the disease will have trouble absorbing water and have diarrhea or loose stool , and might lose weight as a result. Puppies one year old or younger most often develop the disease. Your vet will treat your Boxer by prescribing anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. In some cases, your vet may recommend a change in diet. And remember—if your dog has any of these health problems, they should be treated by a veterinarian. The reasons below account for nearly all instances of diarrhea. Boxers can get diarrhea from eating foul or rotten foods, a change of kibble, stress and anxiety, bacterial infections, parasites, heatstroke, medications, or underlying health issues. Digestive upset Digestive upset accounts for most bouts of diarrhea. Anything from eating rotten or foul food, toxic ingredients, or receiving table scraps can cause your Boxer to experience diarrhea. Anything you boxer eats outside of their regular diet can potentially cause diarrhea even regular dog treats. Switch of diet, kibbles, or treats If diarrhea shortly proceeds a change of diet, kibble, or treats, then you likely have your answer already. Any kind of transition must be done very slowly, otherwise, diarrhea is the likely result. By making a slow transition you reduce the chances of diarrhea happening unless it really is going to happen anyway. General stress can be caused by a wide range of things including a lack of exercise, mental stimulation, being left alone too long, or simply not receiving enough of your attention… Ultimately, any level of stress or anxiety can lead to a myriad of health issues, and believe it or not, diarrhea is one of them. This may help you pinpoint a potential cause of new stress 4. Parasites Intestinal parasites are another well-known cause of diarrhea, granted, this is much rarer than the causes given above. Intestinal parasites can happen if your boxer ingests an infected flea, or the eggs in contaminated soil or feces. If your boxer does in fact have parasites, you might notice visible worms or blood in the diarrhea. Additional symptoms include vomiting, a lack of appetite and energy, weight loss, abdominal pain, and discomfort. Bacterial infections Bacterial infections can happen relatively easily but are another less common cause of diarrhea overall. On a day-to-day basis, our boxers interact with many surfaces and items that are covered in bacteria. Everything from their own food bowls to toys, their own bed, and a plethora of unknown items while out on walks. Sometimes bacteria can develop and actually make your boxer sick if he interacts or ingest it. This usually results in obvious symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, appetite changes, and abdominal pain. Dehydration typically happens way before heatstroke, but both can happen quickly and unexpectedly. The problem with dehydration is that it can be both the cause and the result of diarrhea, which creates a nasty cycle. Because of this, dehydration must be avoided at all costs. If diarrhea is accompanied by additional symptoms, or your boxer is a puppy or senior, then you should consult with your veterinarian right away. In most cases, these will be the exact same steps your veterinarian will suggest. Short fast 24 hours Most vets will recommend withholding food for 24 hours to allow the stomach and digestive system to rest and recover. Fasting allows the system to recover quickly and effectively. This is the ideal step before moving on to a bland food diet. Bland food diet Fasting should be done first by all those that qualify. If your boxer cannot fast, then the first step will be to follow a bland food diet. The bland food diet consists of plain boiled chicken breast with plain boiled white rice. This kind of diet works well as it continues to provide essential nutrients without stressing the digestive system. The usual plan of action is to provide 3 small meals of this per day. Most vets will recommend continuing with this diet until diarrhea stops. After, slowly reintroduce their old diet. Probiotics can be given alongside bland food diets and will help restore balance and strength in the stomach. As diarrhea is mostly gut-related, probiotics usually help a lot. Always check which kind of probiotics you are buying and if in doubt, ask your veterinarian for a recommended brand. Medication Antidiarrheal medication will likely be prescribed if your boxer is struggling to overcome diarrhea with the methods above. In some cases, depending on the health of your boxer, a veterinarian might resort to antidiarrheal medication right away.
