When choosing a breeder, you should avoid the temptation of finding the cheapest. Although a low price does not guarantee that a breeder offers poor-quality dogs, there is a chance that their breeding parents are overbred which can lead to behavioral and physical problems with the puppies. Consult with your local kennel club or hybrid club and ask for recommendations. Ask your local vets, or any owners of similar breeds that you know, and look at reviews and ratings online to help you find breeders with a good reputation and with a history of offering healthy and well-adjusted puppies. There are also groups of owners and fans of the breed, and group members will usually have a very good idea of the breeders that do good work and those that you should avoid. When you do find a breeder, determine whether they have had the puppies screened or, at the very least, that the parents have been screened for common health concerns associated with the breed. This can save a lot of heartache in the long run and help ensure that you get a healthy dog with a lower propensity for genetic illnesses. Try to meet the parents of the dog. It is still a good idea to brush and groom them every week because this can help prevent knots and matting, and a lot of owners like to take their Maltese to a professional groomer to control the hair around their face. If the folds are not cleaned regularly and properly, it can lead to infection and a disease called skin fold dermatitis. In most cases, the Malti Pug has the long hair of the Maltese and avoids the wrinkles of the Pug. As such, he is a loyal and loving companion dog. While he might only be quite small, he is a vocal protector of his human parent. If your Malti Pug takes after his Maltese parent, he may be a little snappy around young children, especially if he has been spoiled by his owner. If he takes after the Pug, it is more likely that he will be loving and will dote on people of any age. The Pug is known for being a comedian and enjoys showing off. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This is because most hybrid breeds have little history behind them, and also because the parent breeds can have a big influence on how your new dog will act and react. In this case, the Maltese is considered a good companion dog but is usually preferred by the older owner. He will not normally get along very well with children, and this problem is magnified if he has been spoiled by his owner. He can be yappy and even a little bit snappy with young children. With that said, his size means that he should not be left alone with young children because he can get accidentally hurt. They tend to be allowed to get away with bad behavior, and it is difficult to train bad behavior away. Therefore, early and ongoing training will help in this regard because it prevents the bad behavior before it occurs, which is much easier than having to try and discourage bad behavior that has become a routine. You should brush this breed every day because it will get rid of the loose hair, which can become uncomfortable when it is matted and knotted. It can also help prevent the shed hair from building up in the home. It is usually easier to brush your dog while he sits on your lap than it is to repeatedly brush the floor. Maltese and Pugs can develop weepy eyes. You can keep their eyes clean by regularly wiping the tears away but do so carefully. This helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can cause serious discomfort in a dog and may prevent them from eating. Because your Malti Pug does not get a lot of walks, his nails will get long and require trimming. Get a good quality trimmer , get your puppy used to having his nails trimmed at a young age, and consider having his professionally groomed if you are unable to clip them yourself. The Maltese The Maltese does not actually come from Malta as its name suggests, but more likely from the nearby region of Meleda, an ancient Croatian island now known as Mljet. Efforts were made to stop the breed from becoming extinct and it was necessary for other breeds such as the Poodle to be added to their gene pool in order to re-establish a healthy and robust population. The Pug Having enjoyed a surge in their popularity over the last couple of decades, many will be surprised to learn that the Pug is not a new breed at all, but rather one that has been around for several thousands of years. Though we are uncertain where they first originated, they were certainly present within China in the year B. Veterinarians are now demanding that breeders act now and start establishing a new population of Pugs with longer faces and less breathing issues. Rather than looking like a combination of the Pug and the Maltese, they have quickly developed into a breed in their own right, with quite a unique look. As the Maltese is not classed as a brachycephalic breed, its muzzle is relatively long in comparison to its skull and there is more space for the soft tissues of its head. Due to this, the Malti-Pug should have a much less snub-nosed appearance than the Pug with a more pronounced muzzle. Perhaps their most dominant facial features are their dark, circular eyes that lend them a keen and alert expression at all times. Their body is square in shape with short limbs. Their tail curls over their back, though is rarely as dramatically curled as that of their Pug parent. Though many will retain the fawn body and darker facial mask that is typical of some Pugs, others will have solid coat colours that may be fawn, black or white. If they tend to bite and nip you when they are tired, then have them go to their nap area sooner to rest. Puppies also tend to bite you when they are cranky from not eating soon enough or when they want attention. You can get up and leave the play area for a few moments. Return once they are calm. Never use only your hands for play. You should have a few puppy-safe chew toys around to grab quickly to offer your puppy during play. If your puppy nips or bites any of these areas, the game is immediately over. Get up slowly and calmly and leave. Only return when they are calm again. Offer your puppy their chew toy when they are too excited to play softly with you. Encourage them to find their toys and bite them instead of you. Never yell or punish your puppy for play-biting and nipping. Doing so can lead to anxiety, aggression, or your puppy fearing you. Even though German Shepherds are one of the smartest dogs, learning and teaching bite inhibition requires a lot of repetition and consistency. You might even walk to walk around with one of their toys in your pocket to help reinforce the right behavior offering them the chew toy when they decide to nip your ankles or bite your legs. Continue with your bite-inhibition training as long as it takes for your dog to learn to use its soft mouth. This could take months, but soon they will master the art of a soft bite. But, crate training your 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy can improve the speed of their house training and accustom them to times they may need to be in their crate such as during travel or at the vets and groomers. Crates are also a useful area for your dog to have their own private space when they want alone time or are stressed and need some quiet. Choose a crate that gives your dog enough room to turn completely around, stand comfortably, sit upright, and lie down easily on their side with their legs stretched for rest. The best crates grow with your German Shepherd and allow you to partition the space off to suit their size. Offer them a treat or even their meal in their crate to help them develop positive associations with it. Start closing the door when they are inside for just a few seconds at first. Then, open the door and let them out calmly. Continue to increase the time your puppy stays inside the crate, working up to longer and longer times. This may only encourage them to cry and whine harder and louder when they want out. Instead, wait just a couple of seconds for them to be quiet, and let them out only when they are not crying and whining. If they appear too stressed or panicked, let them out immediately! This also encourages your dog to seek out the crate when they want their private space and time alone, as they will know where to find their crate. Avoid placing a blanket over the crate since puppies chew and are extremely active. Your pup could accidentally pull the blanket inside and hurt themselves by either wrapping it around their neck or choking on it. Place the crate in an area away from drafts and out of the direct sun so they get too cold or too warm. The best way to do this is to practice leash skills at home first. After they are comfortable wearing their leash around the house, you can work on the skill in the backyard, front yard, or on the sidewalk outside. A good time is during their favorite meal. Only leave them on your dog for a short time to gauge their reaction. If they seem fine, place your puppy into the harness and attach the leash. Offer them praise and a reward for letting you leash them. Now, let your puppy drag the leash around the house so they know how it feels to wear it. You can play with them a bit, or even better have them follow you around which simulates an outdoor walk but indoors. Remove the harness and leash if your GSD puppy becomes too upset and agitated! Keep it upbeat and positive! Now, introduce your puppy to a short walk outdoors in the safety of your backyard. Let your puppy wander around while you hold the leash. They may begin to pull. Get their attention by calling their name and showing them a treat to lure them back to you gently. Reward them every time they come to you while on the leash. Should they ignore you then offer them the treat to lure them to you after giving the command. Try kneeling or squatting down to get on their level when you give them the command. It seems to get their attention better. You can even slap your leg or clap your hands to entice them back to you. Always ensure that your puppy is not stressed by their new harness and leash. Some owners prefer to use a collar for leash training. If this is your choice then only choose life-saving break-away collars since your puppy could get hung up and seriously injure themselves if their collar catches on something during their outside walk. Tail: Set relatively high and preferred to be carried in a saber, can be carried below the topline or "gaily" above. Curled possum type tails are undesirable. Head: Sculptured, broad, well defined eyebrows, medium stop, eyes set well apart, nose to stop slightly longer than stop to occiput. Foreface shorter than skull. The head should be clean and chiseled and fully coated as on the body, legs and tail. The Muzzle is measured from the tip of the nose to the stop. The skull is measured from the occiput to the stop and does not include the muzzle. Ears: Set moderately flat against the head, base should be level with the eye. Leather should be of medium thickness and when gently drawn forward should reach the top canine tooth. Ear leather reaching beyond the tip of nose is considered a severe fault. Ear canals should be free of excessive hair, and not thick and bulbous. When inquisitive and alert the ear set should rise to the top of the head. Eyes: "Slightly" round, large and expressive, always offering eye to eye contact when engaged in activity with a human. Protruding or sunken eyes are a fault. Watery or tearful eyes are a fault. Wide round or narrow almond shaped eyes are considered a fault. Eye Color: Eye color should complement and blend with the face color. Caramel and dogs with rose pigment may have either dark eyes or "ghost" eyes. Ghost is a hazel color range much the same as it is in humans. Ghost eyes must always remain soft in appearance. Cold staring expressionless appearance in all eye colors is a severe fault. Teeth: Scissor bite only is acceptable, being neither undershot nor overshot. Miniatures must not have crowding teeth. Nose: Large square and fleshy. Pigment: Black or Rose. Pigment should be strong. Black pigment dogs must have dark brown eyes. Pink spots or patches on nose, lips, eye rims or pads are a fault. Dogs with rose pigment can have dark hazel, brown or ghost eyes. Eye rims should be rose as should nose, lips and pads. Pink spots or patches are a severe fault. Rose should be a rich liver color. Neck: The firm, well muscled neck should be moderately long, slightly arched and flow into the well angled shoulders with no appearance of abruptness. The neck should not be coarse nor stumpy and should lend an air of elegance to the dog. A short thick neck is a fault. Color: Any solid color including Cafe' and Silver is preferred. Minimal white on the chest and toes is acceptable. Light chalky coarse hairs kemp sprinkled through a dark coat is permissible but very undesirable. Parti patched and Phantoms, are considered an acceptable color. Phantoms are any shading or two tone coloration such as a Black dog with lower legs showing a soft toning of silver or gold or a dog born dark with a golden shading at the roots or a slight brindling effect. True pure solid colors with the exception of Silver and Cafe' are highly prized and are the ideal for the Australian Labradoodle. It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the top coat. This is called sunning and is quite expected and acceptable, as the Australian Labradoodle is an active dog and often a service dog that enjoys the outdoors. Weather bleaching or sunning must not be penalized. The Australian Labradoodle originated in Australia hence the name in the s and was intentionally bred for service and therapy work. They should also not be confused with an American Labradoodle which is the cross of Labrador Retriever and Poodle only. Their eager to please attitude and high intelligence makes them easy to train. As with any breed though, you will need to be consistent! They do best with positive reinforcement and a gentle trainer. Basic training should begin as soon as you bring your Australian Labradoodle puppy home. While Australian Labradoodles are known to have a low to moderate energy level, they are an intelligent breed that requires mental simulation and physical exercise in order to keep them happy and healthy! Australian Labradoodles come in several different sizes micro mini, mini, medium, and standard which means there is the perfect size for everyone! Australian Labradoodles have been intentionally bred for several generations making their traits and characteristics more predictable. Australian Labradoodles have three main coat types: Fleece: A Fleece coat can either be wavy or curly and will have a silky feel. These are typically non-shedding and relatively easy to maintain. Wool: A wool coat is curly, with a Poodle-like texture, has a cotton-like feel. These are usually non-shedding and can be a bit harder to maintain if kept long. Hair: A hair coat can be either straight or have a slight wave and is comparable to a lower generation ie F1 Labradoodle. These have are typically easy to maintain and have higher chance of shedding, but will vary by puppy. Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles that have been intentionally bred for several generations are typically non-shedding or very low-shedding. However, it is important to note that some breeders we do occasionally will do infusion litters with one of the parent breeds ie the Lab or Cocker Spaniel. These infusion litters may produce some puppies that are low to moderate shedding depending on their genetics. Australian Labradoodles can come in very wide variety of colors and patterns! Head Moderately broad with well-defined eyebrows. Stop should be moderate with eyes set well apart. The head should be of moderate width; developed but without exaggeration. Foreface to appear shorter than skull. The head should be clean-cut and free from fleshy cheeks. The whole head must be in proportion to the size of the dog. Ears Large, expressive and slightly rounded. Teeth Must be a scissor bite. Upper teeth to just overlap the bottom teeth. Nose Should be large, of square appearance and fleshy. ForeQuarters Shoulder blades and upper arms to be the same length, and shoulders should be well laid back. Elbows are set close to the body. Forelegs to be straight when viewed from the front. Toeing in our out is a fault. Hindquarters In profile the croup is nearly flat, slight sloping of the croup is acceptable. Stifles should be moderately turned to propel forward movement, and hindquarters well muscled for power in movement. Hock to heel should be strong and short being perpendicular to the ground. View from the rear should be parallel to each other, must not be cow-hocked. Feet The feet are of medium size, round with well-arched toes having elastic and thick pads. The feet should not turn in or out. Tail The tail should follow the topline in repose or when in motion. It may be carried gaily, but should not curl completely over the back. Tip of tail should not touch the back nor curl upon itself. Movement Trotting gait is effortless, smooth, powerful and coordinated in mature dogs. Should have a good reach in front and drive from behind for forward motion. Sound free movement and a light gait are essential. All puppies have been raised here indoors until weeks of age where they then make their way to the outdoor nursery for further development. These puppies coming through will be the last from us due to retirement. Regardless that we are retiring we will still be here to answer any future questions for the lifetime of your puppy — we will only be a phone call or email away. Both puppies will have wonderful outgoing natures and are raised with our adult dogs and well socialised during their 8 weeks here with us. Our lovely pooches are first and foremost our family pets. They are regularly groomed here at home and are taught to swim so they can join us in the pool during summer months.
