Are they healthy and happy pooches or does their pale color result in health problems? Read on to learn everything you need to know about these wonderful dogs and why most of them make excellent family pets or show pooches. He did have some qualities that I thought were different from the many Labs I raised over the years, but I would not consider it outside the norm for a Labrador Retriever. Different Types Of White Labradors On the most basic level, white Labradors are Labradors that have a coat that is white, or almost white, in color. But their coat takes on this unusual pigment for a Labrador for a number of different reasons. These dogs are the same as all other Labs; it is just that both of their parents had the right genes to give them a coat that approaches white. They will have the same black or brown nose and eyes as other Labs, as well as the same intelligence and temperament. They will also face the same health risks, but no additional ones due to the color of their coat. Yellow Labradors come in a range of colors, from fox red, to golden, to cream, and of course, white. White is just another natural variation within the spectrum. White Labrador dogs are usually specifically created by breeders, who have been broadening the color range of Yellow Labradors for decades in order to widen their market. White Labradors are more likely to be English Labradors than American Labradors because of the history of the breeding. This means they will also have the stockier, broader look of the English Lab. Albino Labradors Unlike Yellow Labradors with a white coat, which are healthy dogs that do not differ from their darker colored brothers and sisters, some White Labradors are the result of albinism. This is a genetic condition universal throughout the animal kingdom, but rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20, The result is a pooch that has white hair and extremely pale skin. They are usually easily distinguishable from Yellow Labs that are white as they will also lack pigment in their eyes and nose. Their eyes are often a distinctive red color, though they can also be blue. Albino Labradors often develop health problems as a result of their lack of pigmentation. They are very susceptible to sun damage, which can easily result in tumors and skin cancer. Their eyes are also very sensitive to the sun and can easily become damaged. They are also often born blind or suffer from eye deformities. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish these pups from albino dogs, but they will have normal eye color. This condition is also relatively rare among Labradors, as it is a recessive trait. It can come with similar health concerns as the areas of the skin that lack pigment can also be easily damaged by the sun. But they are not at the same risk as far as the eyes are concerned. Silver Labrador White Labradors should also not be confused with Silver Labradors , which occurs as a result of the dilution of the darker pigment of black or brown dogs. But just like Yellow Labradors with a white coat, these Chocolate Labradors with a silver coat are natural within the color range of Labradors and they do not have different personality traits or health conditions as the result of the color of their coat. Considering this, and the fact that White Labradors are relatively rare among Yellow Labradors, they are not always easy to come across. To find a White Labrador, you will need to speak with a breeder that has chosen color as one of the traits for which they are controlling. However, it is not advisable to work with a breeder who is only or primarily controlling for color, as health and temperament are still more important features in a dog than color. Bear in mind that English Labs look different; they tend to be stockier and broader in the chest and face. They also have different personalities. They tend to be more playful and silly, but have less energy. They have become very popular dogs on the show circuit, while their silly and friendly personality makes them great family pets. It can be difficult to tell if a Lab will grow to be a true White Lab when they are a puppy, as lots of Yellow Labradors are born with a very pale coat, which gets darker as they age. Of course, while seeking out a white Yellow Labrador might be something you want, seeking out an Albino Lab or even a Leucistic Lab is not advisable because of the related health conditions. However, that is not to say there are not Albino Labs out there that need someone to adopt them and give them a loving home. American Or English Labrador? As seeking out a White Labrador probably means choosing between an American and an English Labrador , it is worth considering the differences between the two. Both dogs are friendly, good-natured, and companionable, and also intelligent and highly trainable. This is why they make excellent companion dogs and working dogs. But both were originally bred as retrievers. American Labs are those that have been bred for working, while English Labradors have been bred for conformation, which means they have been bred to more exactly align with the definition of the species, which is why they are an excellent choice for show dogs. They are called English Labradors because they are significantly more common in the UK. Meanwhile, you guessed it, the working-style Labrador is more common in the USA. But, while this is how the breeds are characterized, this is far from prescriptive, and you will often encounter English Labs as working dogs and American Labs competing in shows. So, these are not strict definitions but rather a useful guide to help you distinguish between the two extremes of the breed. They are all registered as Labrador Retrievers with the Kennel Club. That said, there are some key differences to look out for. White Labs are at the extreme color range available for these pooches, and it is required that both parents have and pass on the genes that allow for this extremely light color. Exactly how big your Labrador will get depends on a lot of things, but color is not one of them. As a general rule, if your White Labrador is an American Labrador, you can expect them to weigh between 70 and pounds. English Labradors, while they look stockier, tend to be lighter, between 60 and 85 pounds, They also tend to be smaller than their American brothers and sisters. A healthy White Labrador will have the same life expectancy as the majority of Labrador Retrievers, so about 12 years. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. Although its precise origins are lost in the mists of time, it is thought to share its lineage with the Pyrenean Mountain Dog , by virtue of their somewhat similar appearance and working roles. While its Pyrenean cousin patrolled the slopes of the eponymous mountain range, the Maremma Sheepdog was employed largely in the marshy lowlands of the Abruzzo and Maremma regions of Tuscany, where it worked with shepherds to protect livestock from theft and predation, generally by wolves. The Maremma works in packs, usually of around three to four individuals. Although their primary purpose is to act as a deterrent, they are fearless in the face of a threat, and their historic depictions often feature roccales — spiked metal collars worn by the dogs to protect their necks from potentially lethal injury by large predators. With the unification of Italy in the mid-nineteenth century, the regional differences in Maremmas became less marked, as free movement became possible between pastoral communities, and the breed assumed even greater importance, as their flocks needed protection on their new, seasonal migration between Abruzzo and the rich grazing lands of Puglia, further south. Despite its very long history, the breed remained unrecognised in any formal way until the first breed standard was drawn up in , and it was many more years before most owners of these hard-working dogs would bother to have them registered as pedigrees. While only a handful of Maremma Sheepdogs are registered by the UK Kennel Club in any given year, it is a popular working breed in several other areas of the world, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, and has proven itself capable of guarding a wide range of other species. Appearance The Maremma is a powerful, but not bulky dog. It has marked bony arches above the eyes that accentuate its watchful appearance, but the stop is relatively subtle. Its eyes are oval-shaped and ochre or brown in colour, and its small, triangular ears are set high and forward on the skull. The neck, which is slightly shorter than the skull, is thick and heavily muscled, and has no dewlap, although it is thickly covered in hair. Despite its loyalty and intelligence, years of adaptation to its work means that it is constantly on guard, and liable to act inappropriately in a home environment. While this is a gentle and considerate dog with its own family, especially children, it cannot be entirely trusted in the company of strangers. Trainability Obedience training is essential for such a large dog, with its particular behavioural quirks, and it must be started young. Some shepherds place their Maremmas amongst their sheep from eight weeks of age, and this is also the time to teach the basics of good manners. A Maremma Sheepdog will respond well to firm, consistent training, but may prove too headstrong for owners that have not previously reared a high-energy, highly intelligent working dog of this sort. Health There are very few breed-related health concerns for the Maremma Sheepdog with the following being the ones most commonly encountered: Achondroplasia A disorder of cartilage development that manifests as a form of dwarfism. Although it is considered a normal feature of some breeds, affected Maremmas will develop an abnormally shaped skull and short limbs. Anaesthetic Sensitivity The breed has a low tolerance for many of the commonly used veterinary anaesthetic drugs, and requires special care when undergoing anaesthesia for any reason. Ivermectin Toxicity Like other pastoral breeds, the Maremma may have an unusually permeable barrier between its brain and bloodstream, allowing potentially toxic substances access to the nervous system. Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic treatment that is normally used in livestock, but sometimes also applied to farm dogs for deworming and ectoparasite control. Susceptible dogs exposed to this drug can develop severe neurological signs, including seizures, coma, and death. Hip Dysplasia Almost a ubiquitous problem in large breeds, this is an inherited abnormality of joint development. Affected dogs may develop stiffness and lameness in puppyhood, and will later be predisposed to osteoarthritis. A good-quality diet and maintenance of a healthy body weight can help manage the problem in combination with medical or surgical treatments. Of these health concerns, prospective Maremma buyers should be most mindful of hip dysplasia, which is unlikely to be a problem in pups born to parents with healthy hip joints. Veterinary certificates of hip scores should be available from the breeder for both parents on request. Exercise and Activity Levels Maremma Sheepdogs are happiest when on the move, and although they are not rambunctious or hyperactive, they do need a lot of space over which to roam. Grooming Many working Maremmas go through life without ever being groomed, but they are likely to develop knots and matts if the coat does not receive some attention. All are gorgeous and lovely dogs and so very very deserving of being adopted and having wonderful new homes, sadly though this has gotten to the point of us not having room to take Maremma in need which is what we have always set out to do. The reason we have chosen to be breed specific is there are not alot of people able to foster and accommodate the unique needs of a Maremma. Several of the cross dogs we have had would have been easily fostered in residential settings unlike the Maremma. We are only a very small group taking the dogs from across Victoria and several other states and most of us have at least 1, 2 or 3 cross Maremma in care at the moment which has left us with no room to take Maremma in need. We have some other Maremma needing to come into care but are unable to because of all the cross dogs which at times we find very difficult to rehome. So the end result of this post is at the moment we are not going to be taking any more maremma cross until we have homes for all we have and have taken the other dogs waiting for care and rehoming. Her mother was a black lab and the father was a purebred Maremma. She is fluffy and white with a few brown spots on her face and a brown patch at the base of her tail. She is sweet, loving and gentle. She is super smart and understands everything we say…. She can be stubborn Maremma but she also wants so desperately to please Lab. She will go for endless hikes and chase sticks for days lab but she loves to cuddle, nap and just relax a lot too Maremma. We can clearly see the traits of both breeds in her! She has so much personality and she is so sweet. She chuffs when people come into the house just to warn us, but is quite the moment we say thank you, we know someone is here. I wish she could live forever, she truly makes our lives happier and richer just for having her in it. He was the best. Athletic, fun, gentle and I will miss him forever. I now have a Maremma Lab cross. Mom was a chocolate English Lab smaller than the American Lab weighing about 45 lbs. Dad was Maremma and weighed over lbs. Our guy looks more like a Lab. He has black with white speckle on his paws and chest. He has wisps of white on his muzzle and tail. His black coat is longer than a Lab coat and he has longer feathers on his back legs and tail. But his tail is not curled like the Maremma. He has wonderful beautiful brown eyes. He is lovable, athletic, enthusiastic, loves to play, loves swimming, xc skiing, and hiking, likes people and other dogs, gets along well with one of our cats.Good traveler too. And he is smart. Did well in puppy and intermediate training.He responded well to training. They need lots of exercise and attention.

Sultan worked successfully with a woman in Hawaii. Other breeders saw the merit of crossing these two breeds, and the Labradoodle quickly rose in popularity like its Labrador Retriever parent. These dogs are often produced by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, but multigenerational breeding has begun in an attempt to produce a viable and recognizable breed. The Australian Labradoodle Association and the International Australian Labradoodle Association are taking steps to move this designer breed into registered breed status in the next few years. These groups have made great efforts to bring breeders together so that they are working to achieve the same standards through multigenerational breeding. Labradoodle Size The Labradoodle comes in three size variations, depending on the size of the Poodle used for the first-generation breeding. The three sizes are Standard, Medium, and Miniature.
