Wheezing, also known as stridor, is a high-pitched, raspy sound made by turbulent air flow through the trachea, or windpipe. As a dog inhales normally, air flows into the mouth, through the larynx the area of the throat that contains the vocal cords and is the upper opening of the trachea , then through the trachea before dispersing into the smaller airways of the lungs. Exhalation reverses this order. Most often heard as a dog exhales, a wheezing sound usually indicates that there is some sort of blockage of the air flow in either the trachea or the larynx. Air flow can be obstructed by inflammation, thickening of the airways, or by a foreign object or mass. There are a few benign causes of wheezing, such as a sudden increase in activity especially during the summer or stress that causes your dog to breathe hard enough to wheeze. However, if the wheezing is constant, prolonged, or accompanied by any signs of distress or discomfort, it may indicate a medical emergency. Infections can cause inflammation and thicken the airways bronchitis , but wheezing can also occur when mucus and phlegm buildup near the vocal cords. Heartworm can also affect how the heart functions and lead to symptoms of heart failure. Wheezing Related to Allergies Seasonal respiratory allergies are not as common in dogs as they are in humans, and wheezing during an allergic reaction in dogs is concerning because that could be a sign of anaphylaxis. Especially if the wheezing is accompanied by facial swelling or hives, a dog should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Wheezing Related to Collapsing Trachea Most noted in small-breed dogs, collapsing trachea is a condition where the cartilage of the trachea is weakened. Due to the pressure changes inherent in inhalation and exhalation, the trachea will actually narrow at the weak points. Severity of these symptoms can vary. Dogs who are not severely affected can be treated with environmental management. Examples of this include avoiding strenuous activities, keeping them in air-conditioned locations, and using harnesses that avoid pressure on the neck. For those with more serious clinical signs, there are some surgical options. Wheezing Related to Heart Disease When changes in the heart lead to heart failure , fluid can build up inside or outside the lungs, causing the dog to breathe much harder to get oxygen. This increased force during breathing can lead to wheezing, though coughing is a more common clinical sign. In cases like this, wheezing is often coupled with breathing faster. You may notice your dog using their abdomen more to help them breathe. Heart failure is a medical emergency; if your dog displays these clinical signs, they should be evaluated by your veterinarian immediately. Wheezing Related to a Foreign Body An object that your dog has in their mouth can slip and get lodged in the back of the throat near the larynx, obstructing the airway and leading to severe wheezing. As a dog experiences these sudden changes it can seem like they are choking, and the wheezing is often accompanied by distress, drooling, and coughing. Getting a foreign object out of the airway is a medical emergency, so contact a veterinarian immediately. Wheezing Related to Cancer Unfortunately, airways can also be compromised by cancer. Rare primary cancers can occur in the back of the throat, leading to the same symptoms as a foreign body in the airway. This wheezing usually gets worse over time. Lymphoma cancer of the lymphatic system increases the size of the lymph nodes around the airway, which can lead to wheezing. When cancer metastasizes spreads , it can compromise the lungs internally, leading to the same wheezing from excess breathing effort that we see in heart disease. Wheezing from cancer may or may not be treatable but should be evaluated as soon as it is suspected. How Veterinarians Diagnose Dog Wheezing If a dog is wheezing, a veterinarian will start with a full physical exam. This will show how the dog is breathing, how their heart sounds, whether they have a fever , and if there are any external signs of why the airway is compromised. Taking X-rays of the chest and upper airway is standard to get more insight into the shape and condition of the respiratory tract. Bloodwork can help diagnose infectious causes like heartworm disease or pneumonia and ensure medications prescribed are safe for the liver and kidneys. In severe or difficult cases, a CT scan may be helpful to better evaluate the lungs and trachea. Treatment of Dog Wheezing Treatment of wheezing depends greatly on the underlying cause. Medications such as anti-inflammatories, steroids, antihistamines, and antibiotics can be used. Environmental management, such as keeping your dog calm, improving air quality, or even humidifying air may be helpful for dogs recovering from infectious disease. Surgery and anesthesia may be indicated for foreign bodies, cancers, and collapsing trachea. Some treatments will be short-term, while some may be lifelong. While transporting your dog or waiting for advice or an appointment, keeping your dog calm and cool will often help the most. Your veterinarian may recommend over-the-counter antihistamines if they believe your dog could benefit from them. Many viral and bacterial respiratory infections will resolve in a week to 10 days. Prevention of Dog Wheezing There are vaccines available for many of the infectious causes of canine respiratory illness. All dogs need to be kept up to date on the distemper DAPP vaccine, and socially active dogs need to be actively given the Bordetella kennel cough and influenza vaccines. Monthly heartworm prevention is essential, even for indoor dogs. To avoid foreign bodies, ensure that your dog plays with appropriately sized toys and balls. Discourage running with sticks or other fragile objects that can splinter. Though heart disease, lower airway disease, and collapsing trachea are not directly preventable, obese and overweight dogs are more prone to severe symptoms with these illnesses. Keeping your dog in good body condition will go a long way in making these diseases more manageable. Wheezing is characterized as a high-pitched sound made consistently as your dog breathes out. It is often compared to a human whistle, though it can have harsher tones. Is it normal for dogs to wheeze? While a short bout of wheezing is most likely not concerning, if your dog wheezes consistently or has other symptoms along with wheezing, there could be a serious underlying health condition that warrants your dog being seen by a veterinarian. Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? Newfoundlands Saint Bernards This condition can occur in any breed. However, this list of breeds has the highest rate of incidence. This is more common in racehorses. You may be wondering if your sweet older pooch could possibly have laryngeal paralysis. Signs and Symptoms of Laryngeal Paralysis At the onset of laryngeal paralysis, the signs may be quite subtle and hard to tell. You may think some of the symptoms are because of your dog's older age and that they're slowing down a little. Things such as: Huffing more on walks Walking slower Sleeping more Coughing or gagging a little when drinking water or eating their food every once in a while to start, then perhaps a little more frequently. All of these symptoms are very non-specific and could easily be confused for old age, sore joints, etc. However, as LarPar progresses, these symptoms will too. Much of them are caused by lack of oxygen. As symptoms get worse, your old pup may cough, gag or pant significantly when on walks or even stop to catch their breath multiple times. They may even refuse to go on walks altogether exercise intolerance. They will continue to take long naps. And as LarPar progresses, more specific symptoms will start to develop, such as: Change in bark more hoarse sounding — this is often the first sign most owners notice that something is different or wrong. Loud, raspy breathing noise, especially when breathing in. See the video example below. Dogs that have experienced a syncopal episode fainted or who are cyanotic gums are blue require immediate emergency veterinary treatment as this is life-threatening. Medical Problems Caused By LarPar Additionally, secondary problems can occur as a result of LarPar, such as aspiration pneumonia, where food or water or other foreign material has been accidentally sucked into the lungs, causing a bacterial infection. This will need to be treated with antibiotics and can be very dangerous and result in hospitalization if not caught early and treated aggressively. But this can and often is mistaken for simply heat stroke rather than heat stroke due to LarPar. If this happens, your dog must to be seen by a veterinarian immediately, as oxygen is what is going to save them. Additionally, in unilateral cases where only one side of the larynx is affected , the dog typically fares better than those in which both its arytenoid cartilages are not functioning bilateral LarPar. The unaffected side compensates for the affected side for a period of time. However, most unilateral cases eventually progress to bilateral LarPar. Diagnosis of Laryngeal Paralysis Although the more specific symptoms of LarPar make it pretty clear that your dog has this condition, there is only one true way in which laryngeal paralysis can be definitively diagnosed. Your veterinarian will directly examine the larynx under light with mild sedation. This way, the function of arytenoid cartilage can be evaluated as your dog breathes in and out voluntarily. The examination typically only takes a few minutes once they are sedated. At the same time, this examination allows your veterinarian to check for tumors in the throat. Your vet may also recommend ruling out heart, lung, or mediastinal the space in front of the heart diseases or other possible causes of the symptoms often seen with LarPar. So, they'll suggest performing additional tests, such as thoracic radiographs chest x-ray , a CT scan, or echocardiography ultrasound of the heart. Treatment and Management of Laryngeal Paralysis With mild cases of LarPar, it may be able to be managed by managing your dog's environment alone with occasional assistance from specific medications as needed. Adjust Your Dog's Lifestyle and Weight Start with limiting physical exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight, and avoiding high temperatures and stressful situations to control the need for panting, which causes unwanted respiratory distress. Medications that may be dispensed for use when needed include mild sedatives for use to decrease anxiety and panting, which will improve respiration, and corticosteroids to be used in acute flare-ups to decrease any inflammation and edema swelling of the larynx that may have occurred if panting became out of control, and the throat became inflamed and swollen. Additionally, most veterinarians recommend to no longer use a collar, including a flat or martingale collar, and absolutely no prong, choke, or electric collars. These put pressure on your dog's throat, increasing inflammation and swelling. Rather, your dog should be walked with the aid of a harness or even a head collar. Here's how to choose the right harness for your dog. Laryngeal Surgery In severe cases of LarPar, particularly when paralysis occurs in both arytenoid cartilages, surgery can be performed. This is known as arytenoid lateralization or laryngeal tieback surgery, where one of the arytenoid cartilages is sewn back in an abducted open position. This reduces the symptoms associated with LarPar, such as inadequate ventilation and overheating. However, this surgery does not come without risks. It renders your dog unable to close that arytenoid cartilage not that they were able to while it was paralyzed , which increases their risk of aspiration pneumonia. Hence, most veterinary surgeons recommend only tying back one arytenoid cartilage versus both, ideally decreasing this risk. Upon recovery from this surgery, your dog will still sound hoarse and will need to be managed in the same way as those with mild cases of LarPar. If you have any questions about this condition, leave a comment below. Patches of fur loss , often circle-shaped; Patches of red, irritated, and scaly skin. Parvovirus can also be also deadly when untreated, another condition associated with congestion in puppies and dogs. Kennel cough is another highly contagious disease that could affect puppies newly separated from their mother and siblings. How to Help a Congested Dog A trip to the vet is in order if your dog sounds congested when breathing. Early diagnosis means fast treatment, which in turn means a quicker recovery time and a higher chance of recovery success. Some medical complaints will not go away without treatment. This includes pneumonia, which is usually treated with antibiotics. Your pooch can only get those antibiotics if they have been prescribed them. More pressing cases could even require a night or two in the doggo hospital, for IV antibiotics and fluids. Allergies are often treated using antihistamines. Parvovirus, on the other hand, is much more serious, requiring quarantine and intensive medication courses. Heart disease will often require long-term medication, particularly in middle to older-aged dogs. By not going to the vet with your poor pooch, you are running the risk of letting a potentially deadly disease, such as Parvovirus, run rampant. Vacuuming regularly, using a filter vacuum, will keep dust, mites , and other allergens to a minimum. Check Your Products Have you recently changed the cleaning products you use? Or laundry detergent? How about home fragrances, perfumes and colognes, or even hairsprays? All these things can agitate sensitive doggos, causing congestion, particularly with pampered, mostly indoor breeds. Overweight dogs will experience a host of problems, including congestion and respiratory conditions. If your dog has outdoor-related allergies, however, this might not be the best idea. Emergency Fund Worried about the cost of vet care for your precious pooch? Why not let Petcube take away some of that stress? FAQ What can I give my dog for congestion? It is not recommended to give your dog any kind of over-the-counter medication that you — yourself — would take. When should I take a dog with chest congestion symptoms to the vet? Most benign causes behind congestion in dogs will clear up before that, so a longer bout of it would indicate an underlying problem. Are there high-risk congested dog breeds? Yes, certain breeds of dogs are prone to suffering from congestion more than others. Short-nosed or flat-nosed breeds, such as bulldogs and pugs, experience breathing problems more frequently than others. Was this article helpful? Why Is My Dog Wheezing? Wheezing in dogs occurs when something impairs or blocks the flow of air in the windpipe, causing stridor a whistling sound. This can be caused by swelling and inflammation in the airways, something getting stuck in the windpipe, or a number of medical issues. If your dog is making wheezing noises, it can certainly be alarming. The sound is different than a cough or sneeze, and sounds very similar to a wheezing sound a human would make. A wheezing dog will make a high-pitched whistling sound when breathing, usually on an exhale. If your dog is in distress, they may try to find a spot to lay down to try to get their breathing under control. In bronchitis, inflammation causes the airways to swell and release mucous, ultimately causing the airways to narrow. The main symptom of bronchitis is coughing an attempt to clear the airways , however, as the condition worsens, dogs will have difficulty breathing and may begin to wheeze when exhaling. Collapsed Trachea A collapsed trachea is a chronic condition in dogs that affects the windpipe trachea. Symptoms of this condition including a honking cough and abnormal breathing sounds, including wheezing. Allergies Airborne allergens such as pollen, mold, and dust can cause a dog to wheeze. The most common symptom is a persistent dry cough, but breathing difficulties such as wheezing can also develop or worsen with exercise. Infections Upper respiratory tract infections are similar to a cold or flu in humans and can cause wheezing in dogs. The symptoms of these infections usually include coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing including wheezing , and low exercise tolerance. These diseases can cause dogs to have difficulty breathing due to lethargy and exercise intolerance, which may cause wheezing. These objects could include bone fragments, large pieces of food, toys, sticks, or other objects your dog might find around the house or yard. This is especially a problem in younger dogs who like to chew on just about anything, so if you notice your puppy wheezing, take action right away. Take them to the vet immediately for treatment. Your dog is wheezing and gasping for breath If your dog is having difficulty taking a breath, it could be a sign of a life-threatening medical emergency such as an allergic reaction or a serious heart condition. Your dog is wheezing and gagging If your dog is gagging or retching in addition to wheezing, it could be a sign that something is stuck in the windpipe. Your dog is coughing and wheezing A wheeze accompanied by a cough could indicate an upper respiratory infection, kennel cough, lower airway disease, or a foreign body stuck in the trachea. Your dog is wheezing with an accelerated rate of breathing Wheezing accompanied by a fast rate of breathing could indicate a range of diseases and conditions, such as chronic bronchitis or heart disease. Your dog keeps wheezing If your dog is consistently wheezing with no improvement in symptoms, it warrants a visit to the vet to see if there is an underlying cause. What To Do If Your Dog Is Wheezing If your dog is wheezing and showing signs of distress, it is important to take steps to help keep them calm and breathe easier. Remain calm and keep your pet comfortable. Move your dog to a well-ventilated area If possible, move your dog to an area of your home that has good airflow. If your dog is outside, bring them inside to see if symptoms improve. Take your dog to the vet If your dog keeps wheezing or shows other symptoms, take them to the vet immediately. Treatment For A Wheezing Dog Since there are many causes of wheezing in dogs, the underlying condition must first be diagnosed so the appropriate treatment plan can be made. An examination will reveal the right course of treatment for your pet. Medications For infections, treatment will likely include antibiotics. If the wheezing is caused by chronic bronchitis, your vet will likely prescribe a bronchodilator as a rescue medication to use when your dog is in distress. These medications work to relax the muscles in the airways to allow your dog to breathe easier. A dog with bronchitis will also require a daily corticosteroid medication to manage the condition and help keep symptoms at bay. Both corticosteroids and bronchodilators can be prescribed as inhalers and are much easier to administer to your pet than a pill or syrup. Speak with your vet about using inhaled medication in conjunction with the AeroDawg canine aerosol chamber to keep your dog happy and healthy. Environmental Modification To help your dog breathe easier, your vet might recommend that you make some changes around the house. This may include: Avoiding the use of aerosols and harsh chemicals Vacuuming and cleaning frequently to avoid dust build-up Changing your air filters on a regular basis Avoiding the use of heavily scented products Not smoking around your dog Diet Modifications Make sure you feed your dog a healthy, well-balanced diet. A complete diet will help give your dog the nutrition they need to keep their immune system healthy. If necessary, your vet may recommend feeding your dog a low-allergen diet to help control symptoms. If your dog is overweight or obese, they can have a lower tolerance for exercise and their respiratory system can be compromised. Your vet may recommend: Taking your dog on shorter but more frequent walks Feeding your dog a specially formulated food for weight loss Playing with your dog Feeding your dog a smaller amount of food Keep Your Dog Healthy And Safe If your dog is showing signs of breathing difficulties such as wheezing, always err on the side of caution and take them to the vet. The sooner an underlying condition is caught, the better. Even with lifelong conditions such as chronic bronchitis, symptoms can be controlled with the right treatment.

Therefore, we cannot recommend, nor do we endorse or support any one of these listings. If you are looking to purchase a puppy, it is your responsibility to do your research in learning what to look for in a breeder. In addition to the Breeders listed here, the Breed Clubs generally include listings of member Breeders on their web sites and, if not, then a listing can usually be obtained either by e-mail or telephone. We do not randomly add Breeders to any listing. All Breeders listed have requested to be included either via a general link or paid advertising. If a young pup is not an absolute requirement for you, then considering the adoption of a dog from a rescue organization or shelter is strongly recommended. In addition, Breeders occasionally have young adults available and many also take in rescued dogs. This section includes several articles and general information along with listings of shelters and rescue organizations that are not breed specific from across Canada. Energy level: High, I am still young after all! I also love to run and catch balls, but I need to be monitored with my toys. I need super hard toys and am able to destroy even very tough toys designed for power chewers. I love fetch, tug of war, and playing in water. I am good at bath time and will just sit in tub once you get me in there. Things I don't like: I don't like being by myself for too long. Things that make my humans happy: I am good while they are gone. I just want to play with everyone! Special notes: I do get excited when eating and tend to eat very fast, so I need to have a special bowl that helps me to slow down my meal. What we think of this misunderstood crossbreed 1. The American Bulldog Pitbull mix is as dangerous as it looks. These dogs get a bad rap mostly because of their appearance, which can be intimidating. With the Pitbull Bulldog hybrid, though, looks can be deceiving. How big does an American Bulldog Pitbull mix get? Most Bully Pits are medium-sized , with bodies that are muscular and compact. Pointed ears and a large mouth complete the face of a Pitbull Bulldog mix. Like their parent breeds, most Bully Pits have smooth coats of short, fine hair. Their coats come in a wide variety of colors, including black, brown, white, tan, cream, grey, red, and brindle. The appearance of a Bulldog Pitbull mix also depends on the specific parent used in the breeding. As long as they receive firm obedience training and socialization at an early age, Pitbull Bulldog crosses will prove themselves to be friendly dogs who love to have fun, whether with their family or with other dogs. American Bulldog Pitbull mixes make for sweet, affectionate pets that enjoy being the center of attention. Look at these adorable Bulldog-Pitbull dogs having fun in the backyard: One distinguishing trait of the Bulldog Pitbull mix is its loyalty to its pack. This crossbreed tends to be highly protective of its family members, using its deep voice to warn you about something suspicious in your home. Its natural protectiveness and loyalty, combined with its intimidating, strong physique, make the American Bulldog Pitbull mix one of the best guard dogs you can get today. Due to their energetic, playful nature, Pitbull Bulldog mixes love being around children, especially those they grow up with. A properly trained American Bulldog Pitbull mix will also be protective of the kids in its family. Bully Pits are impossible to train. The key to properly training an American Bulldog Pitbull mix is having the right attitude. The Pitbull Bulldog mix has a confident, assertive personality, so it will listen only to a person who has a similar demeanor. With the right owner, American Bulldog Pitbull mixes will prove to be intelligent dogs who can quickly follow commands and adopt positive behavior. By training your Pitbull Bulldog mix from an early age, you can help your dog understand your role as the alpha and its position in the pack hierarchy. This crossbreed benefits from early socialization and leash training, and you can start by walking your puppy around the neighborhood so it can get used to being around other people and dogs. Instead of punishing your dog, use a reward system and positive reinforcement when he follows your orders. American Bulldog Pitbull mixes need a home with plenty of space. Bully Pits will thrive in an apartment or condominium as long as they get sufficient exercise every day. The Pitbull Bulldog needs 60 to 90 minutes of moderate exercise daily. It will love being your running buddy or going with you on leisurely walks around the neighborhood. Mental stimulation is crucial for the American Bulldog Pitbull cross, so make sure to play brain games like hide and seek and treasure hunts with your dog. Like its Pit Bull parent, the Pitbull Bulldog mix is an accomplished jumper. Taking care of an American Bulldog and Pitbull mix is difficult. A thorough brushing once or twice a week is enough to keep their coats shiny and healthy. You can use a damp washcloth to wipe down the Pitbull and Bulldog hybrid every week or two to get rid of any debris in the coat. The proper diet for a Pitbull Bulldog mix Like its parent breeds, the American Bulldog Pitbull cross tends to gain weight easily. Make sure to divide this amount of food into 3 or 4 meals throughout the day. This dog food contains the nutrients that the crossbreed needs to build strong muscles and joints, keep its energy levels up, and maintain overall good health. Is the Bully Pit a healthy breed? You can expect to enjoy many years of companionship with this dog. However, this crossbreed is also predisposed to certain genetic conditions, especially those that affect its parent breeds. Both the American Bulldog and the Pit Bull Terrier are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so your Bulldog Pitbull mix may be prone to these joint conditions, too. This hybrid dog is also vulnerable to skin allergies and infections because of its short coat. Due to its Bulldog heritage, the Pitbull Bulldog cross may also be prone to respiratory problems. Their short, thin coats also make most American Bulldog Pitbull crosses intolerant of cold weather. Make sure to bundle up your dog if you want to go out on cold days. If you want to buy an American Bulldog Pitbull mix, your best source is a reputable breeder. Breeders of this specific hybrid may be difficult to find, though, so your next best option is to contact breeders of American Bulldogs and Pit Bull Terriers:. Lifespan Sociability As you know, Pitbulls have a bad rap. Both parent breeds are relatively healthy, with few glaring issues. They are reasonably friendly, which also helps. They are intelligent dogs, which means that you need to take an active role in providing enough exercise and diversion to prevent them from developing bad habits. They are relatively easy to care for and family-friendly. The downsides involve the size of the Bullypit, even if they can handle city life or apartment dwelling well. They make a good watchdog if just for their appearance. They actually love people, including strangers. Bullypits are easy to groom. They have a moderate tendency to be nippy but may have a higher propensity toward wanderlust, due to their history as a fighter. John D. Johnson, a returning war veteran, along with Alan Scott and several other breeders, took on the task to re-establish the breed. Their efforts resulted in several distinct bloodlines, the two best-known being the Johnson type, which had a bulkier, heavier frame and large head, and the Scott type, which was more athletic. Most modern American Bulldogs are a hybrid of these two original lines. The truth is that it is a reference to the early history of the English Bulldog, which references its history as bait for the animal in his name, bull. Their breeding reflects this unfortunate purpose. However, its early history tells a different story. He was a family dog that protected his family. They are kid-friendly, but the primary concern is their size—they can easily overwhelm a small child. They are, after all, a lot of dog! They may not realize their strength and can hurt smaller breeds seemingly unintentionally. They are more likely to injure another animal simply because of how big they are—even if there is no aggression behind the attempt. That same precaution applies to other family pets, like your cat. Instinct will drive them to run after any animal that flees them, regardless if they are part of the household. Many people view them as ferocious and dangerous animals, no matter how inappropriate the descriptor for your pet is. That can increase their risk of other chronic health conditions, such as diabetes. The best way to manage it is by providing regularly scheduled meals so that you can monitor his food consumption to match his activity levels. This hybrid is prone to obesity, so it behooves a pet owner to monitor his weight and adjust his diet accordingly. Daily walks are an excellent way to maintain his socialization skills and help him burn those extra calories. However, both parent breeds are playful, which can make it an easy task. That means a playful nature. You must approach training with a firm yet positive approach. Both parent breeds are sensitive to harsh reprimands. The Bull Terrier side of your pup has a higher degree of wanderlust and prey drive that you should also handle when he is young. Walking on sidewalks will wear them down to some degree. We recommend pre-health screenings for the hips and elbows by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. The correction of genetic defects is expensive and painful. We strongly recommend buying from reputable breeders who screen for the most common issues. Minor Conditions. They are known to have an average energy level and a generally friendly disposition. They are not inherently aggressive as most dog critics suggest. If you prefer a medium-sized canine companion, this crossbreed proves to be a great choice. Your Pitbull English Bulldog mix will have a lot of diversity to draw from regarding their coat color, size, and physical appearance. Some owners say that the Pitbull Bulldog mix is not for the faint-hearted. You will need to commit effort and time to have them trained and properly socialized. Additionally, it might be challenging to raise this crossbreed given it is predisposed to a number of health conditions like heart disease and eye problems. The English Bulldog Pitbull mix likely originated in the s when breeders thought to combine the best traits of Bulldogs and Pitbulls in one. Similar to the case of most mixed breed dogs, the best we can do is familiarize ourselves with the history of both its parent breeds since there is a lack of documentation about their history. The English Bulldog was first bred in the 13th century in England. These dogs were used for bull-baiting and other brutal bloodsports. Today, the English Bully is a refined breed and known to be courageous, loyal, and affectionate. It is widely believed that all dogs classified as Pitbulls today descend from the British Bull and Terrier which were first imported into America in the s. Both parent breeds of the English Bulldog Pitbull mix have had a long history of aggressive fighting blood sports of dogfighting, bear, and baiting bulls , which fortunately has come to an end. Rest assured, your English Bulldog Pitbull mix is now a refined, well-behaved dog. Photo by itznipsey IG English Bulldog Pitbull mixes can come in medium-sized builds and various colors. One thing is for sure, though, this mix will generally appear to be muscular, stout, and medium in size. It will also have that characteristic Pitbull smile we all love and adore. Appearance-wise, this mixed breed is stout and its head is broad and extensive. They also have large jaws, much like their parent breeds. Generally, they have a short snout, but it would be longer if they took after their Pitbull parent. They also have small, semi-pricked ears. An English Bulldog Pitbull mix features an eye color ranging from a dark brown hue to a shade of light amber, just like most bully breeds. They have thick necks and muscular chests, and they appear to have more squats than a regular Pitbull. The legs are well-muscled, long, and slightly hocked like their Bulldog parent. These dogs can have a variety of markings in white or silver colors. They have short and fine coats, in colors including black, tan, red, yellow, gray, golden, cream and white. Note that these are just common observations, and your English Bulldog Pitbull mix may not exactly manifest these features. Since the Pitbull English Bulldog mix is a crossbreed, it can take after its Pitbull parent with a large head and wide jaw, and it may also look more like a Bulldog, with its signature flat and wrinkled face. On average, English Bulldog Pitbull mixes weigh 60 pounds and stand at the height of 18 inches tall. When it comes to their parent breeds, English Bulldogs are about 14 to 15 inches tall, and weighing between 45 and 70 pounds. Meanwhile, Pitbulls are around 18 to 21 inches tall with a weight of 40 to 70 pounds. Typically, male dogs will always be heavier than their female counterparts. Do not worry if your pup is not precisely within the average measurement. Remember that this is just a size estimation, and sometimes, your puppy might still need more time to grow. In the bigger picture, the penultimate reason for avoiding such a purchase is that often these companies and pet stores conduct large-scale breeding of dogs. In other words, they breed dogs as they so please without taking health, food, and safety much into consideration. A respectable and reputable breeder is one who is transparent about their methods. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. I had gotten Caine when he was only 3 weeks old. He was so tiny. Hands down, this hybrid breed has got to be one of, if not the best crossbred ever. He's so protective of me and my loved ones. His personality is undescribable. No doubt about it, he's the best friend anyone can have. He loves to wrestle, his strenghth is amazing. When we go to the lake he tries his hardest to catch the ducks. He weighs about 80 lbs. She is an American Bulldog her dad and Pitbull Terrier her mom mix. She likes to explore and she bites everything and everyone including our other dog, Maye a 2-year-old Pitbull Terrier. She's already getting the hang of going to the bathroom outside and hasn't had any accidents in 2 days. His name is Sirus. He is 6 weeks old in these pics. He is a great dog, very energetic. Since the dilution gene is rare, a blue nose Pitbull mixed with Bulldog is not likely to have a blue nose. Pitbull Bulldog Mix temperament and personality Both parent breeds of a Pitbull x Bulldog Mix are known for their loyalty, courage, and protective nature. Nevertheless, there are some key differences. Bulldogs are stubborn and often challenge their owners, while Pitbulls are eager to please. Pitbulls are also more active and require more exercise, while Bulldogs are content with short walks. The temperament of a half Pit half Bulldog can vary depending on which parent they take after the most. If the Pitbull genes are more dominant, the mix will inherit many Pitbull characteristics. If it is the other way around, the pup is likely to be like a Bulldog in temperament and personality. What is the temperament of a Pitbull? Pitbulls have an unjust reputation of being the most dangerous dog breed in the world. This perception is due to their strength, size, unpredictability, and past as sports dogs. While it is true that Pitbulls can be dangerous, their aggression is never directed at humans. In fact, they would do anything to please their owner. Pitbulls form strong bonds with children , and their high pain tolerance helps them endure the mischievous antics of kids without getting bothered. What is the temperament of a Bulldog? Unlike the active and excitable Pitbull, Bulldogs are content to laze about the house. Bulldogs are courageous and loyal to their family, making them excellent watchdogs. Bulldogs were bred to be different from their ancestors, and breeders have completely overhauled their temperament over the years. Does Pitbull Bulldog Mix get along with other pets? I need a family who is willing to give me long term consistency to help me on my way. I was originally in a home where kids weren't very nice to me. Then I went to a home with older kids, but I protected my mom on the couch and scratched the kids, and I was saved just before an appt to euthanize me. The family told the rescue that I was great in their home except for protecting mom on the couch. I am friendly and do well meeting new people. I'm great in many situations but I need a family who is going to be consistent and everyone in the home needs to be an assertive pack leader to help me know my place as a dog. I am a barker, and will not work in an apartment or townhome situation. I haven't had a lot of consistent crate experience in my early time, so I flip out when I'm first put into one, and bark a lot. I would do best with someone who doesn't want to crate me and will work with me on being left out. I want to be with my people as much as possible and will bark if I can't be, so will do best with a family where someone is home most of the time. I do good with other dogs, but may protect valuable resources from them. Dakota will need regular grooming to keep his skin, coat, and ears in good condition. Dakota is prone to tear stains and the pictures above were taken shortly after a grooming. There are many products available that help with tearstains. Protection behaviors often come from a place of feeling that an individual isn't strong enough to protect themselves, so a stronger minded dog, will step into the role to fill the void that the human leaves behind. If you let your dog run the house and tell you what they want, Dakota is not the dog for you. If you coddle your dog, and humanize them and their behaviors, Dakota is not the dog for you. Dakota needs a family who has some experience with training behaviors more than just basic obedience who is willing to work with him. Protection behaviors can be trained with consistency. Since Dakota has already been in multiple homes, we will be very selective on where he is placed to set him up for future success. Dakota will not be placed in an apartment or townhome with shared walls and he will not be placed with children. Please note, applications submitted will take at least a week to process, looking for the best fit home for Dakota. Our fosters do the best they can to provide all information about the animal's background and temperament while in foster care in their home. An adopters routine and home environment is likely going to be different than that in their foster home. Sometimes there is more that comes out about a dog's personality once they have been able to settle in a home and truly become comfortable. There are great articles out there written about the different stages a pet goes through after adoption, discussing transitions that happen at 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months. We highly recommend reading about this - it will help you understand the transition your new pet goes through. Considering Dakota for adoption?
Breeds The link has been copied! Is it possible for a Goldendoodle to get any cuter? Well… Until you see a Red Goldendoodle, that is! We dare you not to hug this pup immediately upon meeting one. Has your interest been piqued? Ours too! What Is the Red Goldendoodle? He tried crossing poodles with Labrador Retrievers to get a dog with the low-shedding coat of a Poodle and the calm intelligence of a Labrador. His cross was a success and the Labradoodle was born. Once people discovered how adorable these crosses were, the craze took off. People began breeding Poodles with all sorts of breeds to create ridiculously cute pups. The Goldendoodle was one of the first to become popular and remains one of the most sought-after doodle dogs. This dog is achieved by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. Getting the deep red coat of a Red Goldendoodle is a little trickier. Typically, it is bred by adding an Irish Setter to the mix. How Is a Red Goldendoodle Bred? It has to be the right Golden Retriever and the right Poodle, otherwise, the deep rich red color becomes too diluted. Poodles have more variety of colors , so the color you choose here is crucial. You need a darker poodle to help contribute. A lighter-colored poodle could influence the color more toward apricot or gold. Is the Red Goldendoodle Popular? Have you seen a picture of this dog? In fact, it is one of the more sought-after colors. But a red one? Is the Red Goldendoodle Rare? Not necessarily, but it is not as readily available as the gold variety. As mentioned, breeders have to be very selective about breeding to produce this color, which means there are fewer breeders that offer it. You may have to spend a little more time looking around — and get on a couple of waiting lists — to find a Red Goldendoodle puppy. However, it is definitely possible. They are happy, sweet dogs with lots of energy. Personalities will vary somewhat with the individual, but in general, these dogs are fun-loving and happy to participate in anything that means spending time with you. However, as a mixed breed dog, their appearance can vary. Most Red Goldendoodles are large dogs since Golden Retrievers are large and the Standard size Poodle is used in the cross. However, Mini and Toy poodles can also be used, resulting in smaller Red Goldendoodles. Because small ones are rarer, they are also more expensive. There are three types of Red Goldendoodle coats. Straight The hair is mostly straight, easy to comb, and the dog can be quite fluffy. However, this coat texture is more prone to shedding. Wavy The wavy texture is something in between. The hair is slightly curly, somewhat easy to comb, and the dog will generally shed less. Curly This is the most hypoallergenic texture because the dog rarely sheds. However, grooming those tight curls can get tedious and requires constant upkeep. Thus, if you are looking for a specific texture, you have to know what to look for. Puppies with wavy hair on their muzzles will have either wavy or curly adult coats. An experienced breeder can also tell you what their coat pattern will be by examining the hair around their muzzle. Color Variations of the Red Goldendoodle The color of a Red Goldendoodle might seem self-explanatory, but there is some variation. Coat colors can vary from deep dark red like a Field Golden Retriever to the considerably lighter apricot version. Interestingly, the apricot versions are not always considered Red Goldendoodles. It also tends to be more expensive. Furthermore, many dogs change color over time. As they age, their coat lightens, so you should be prepared for the fact that your dog may not always stay the same color. Furthermore, red Goldendoodles are not always a solid color. Many have white markings, particularly on their face and chest. Many Red Goldendoodles sport a full tuxedo pattern, which is white markings on the face and chest in the characteristic shape of a tuxedo. If the Poodle parent contributes the splotchy merle pattern gene , Red Goldendoodles can exhibit this pattern. It may appear in spots or over their entire body. Sable is an interesting color that usually involves black-tipped hairs all over the dog's body. In the case of the Red Sable Goldendoodle, they tend to have a light coat with red hairs spattered all over their body. Red Goldendoodles live about years, offering tons of hugs and cuddles along the way. Because of the influx of new genes, crossbreed dogs tend to be healthy, though they can be prone to the health problems that plague any of their parent breeds. How to Groom a Red Goldendoodle Grooming needs will vary depending on the coat texture your specific dog has. Straight-haired dogs are generally easy to groom, just brush their hair regularly to keep it from getting tangled. The wavy and curly versions get a little more complicated. They need regular brushing to keep their hair from getting matted and tangled. Matted hair around the ears can harbor moisture and easily lead to ear infections. Do Red Goldendoodles Shed a Lot? One of the big draws to any of the doodle dogs is their supposed hypoallergenic qualities and the fact that they shed less. This is true for some individuals, but not all. All dogs shed and that includes Red Goldendoodles. However, their tight curls help keep it from falling out all over your house. Brushing your dog about once a week frequency depends on the individual will clean out shed hairs and keep your dog and house tidy. Twice a year, Red Goldendoodles will shed a little more, just like other dogs. However, the shedding is significantly less than what you would experience with a Golden Retriever, for example. Are those adorable pictures you see online telling the truth? Will your Red Goldendoodle actually look like a teddy bear? We are happy to report that yes! True Red Goldendoodles do tend to look like teddy bears, especially when they are young. Plus, you can have your groomer choose a haircut that will accentuate the teddy bear look and make your adorable dog look even more adorable! Just keep in mind that your Red Goldendoodle will usually lighten over time. As a puppy, he may have the classic deep red color of a teddy bear but as he ages, this may change. Other Goldendoodle Colors Of course, red is only one of the many shades of gorgeous Goldendoodle colors available. For our Goldendoodles, the coat color change was very gradual and happened into adulthood. From my research and years of connecting with other Doodle moms, this seems typical of many red Goldendoodles. Coat colors may fade or lighten even through adulthood. According to Tufts Veterinary School , food aggression is when dogs become aggressive when someone approaches them around food. There are a range of fixes for this, including training a dog to stop showing this behavior, or just effectively managing it and minimizing the risks around it. How To Prevent Aggression In Golden Retrievers The best thing to do about aggression in golden retrievers is to stop it from happening in the first place. Since bad behaviors usually stem from a mix of environmental and genetic factors, here are three ways to try to prevent aggression in your golden: 1. Socialize your dog Dogs usually become aggressive when they feel threatened. Choose a good breeder Since genetics definitely play a role in whether or not golden retrievers can be aggressive, make sure to choose a good breeder than is breeding good-tempered dogs. Also, breeders are the first ones to socialize your puppy , and responsible breeders will know how to do that, as well as care enough to do it. Goldens are big dogs with big teeth, so if you have an aggressive golden, it could be dangerous. Conclusion Although it is not common, it is possible for golden retrievers to be aggressive. To prevent aggression in your dog, be sure to never physically punish them, choose a good breeder, and properly socialize them. Related articles:. Print Retrievers, for the most part, make great family dogs. They are also smart, so they learn quickly and their strong willingness to please often makes retrievers a great addition to the family. But some retriever puppies are a high-energy ball of fire, one that is difficult to train or even handle in daily life. And sometimes there will be signs of aggressive behavior that are concerning. However, there is a fine line between puppy play behavior and hyper and aggressive behavior. Some owners are reluctant to stop such behavior thinking that it is just puppy behavior and therefore the dog will outgrow it. If you have a retriever puppy that is hyper or aggressive you might wonder what can be done and why they are acting that way. Here is some guidance on this topic. What are normal puppy behaviors? It is normal for very young puppies to nip at your hands and your feet. It is also normal for them to chew on things, jump on you and walk all over you. An 8-week-old puppy nipping at your hand might at first seem cute and sweet. But one bite from those exceedingly sharp puppy teeth and you might decide its not so cute. Those teeth can puncture your skin in a second and draw blood just as quickly. So, while it may be normal for a puppy to nip at your hand or foot, it is not a behavior that you want to ignore. Puppy play is naturally aggressive When puppies playing with their litter mates, the play can be very aggressive. This is natural, as dogs, they are always figuring out their pack and where they fit into the pack. Recognizing puppy play You can recognize when a retriever puppy is playing by the stance they take. They also may run around in circles, growling, or barking in high pitched barks, but when they do this their ears will be up, their tail wagging and they do not look threatening. It is uncommon for puppies under 12 weeks of age to exhibit true aggression. True aggression involves a dog exhibiting prolonged growling with a stiff posture and baring of teeth. Their hackles the hair on their back will be raised and they will be poised in a threatening position with ears back. If you were to approach a dog in this position which I do not recommend they will often move toward you and try to bite or snap at you. This type of aggression is something to be fearful about and is not healthy. Isolate the dog as much as possible and consult a veterinary or other professional for help or advice. What are signs of aggression in puppies All puppies can act aggressively, but if you take steps to address the aggressive behaviors while your dog is a young puppy, you can make a huge difference on how or whether that aggression progresses. These are all forms of aggression and none of them should be tolerated, not as a puppy and certainly not as a dog. There are also dominance behaviors that puppies exhibit that are often mistaken as aggression. They include things like jumping on people, stepping on people, pushing you around, forcing you to pet them and others. While these behaviors can be done aggressively, and should still be corrected immediately, they are not the same as aggression. Definition of puppy Because we often get clients that bring out their dogs that are close to a year old and refer to them as puppies, I want to define what I consider a puppy. A puppy is a dog under six months of age. Most retrievers are a good size by around six months. They will often continue to grow up until about a year and a half, but they have the bulk of their size by the time they are six months. And by six months, you need to have a handle on any aggressive behaviors, or you are going to struggle with eliminating them. Is it normal for a puppy to be very aggressive? It is normal for a puppy to test you with aggressive behaviors. And to be clear, that place should be at the bottom of the pack, under all your family members. I understand that your dog is a part of your family but allowing your dog to be in a position above any or all your family members is just asking for trouble. Treating your dog as a human and attributing your dog with human thoughts and reasoning is not fair to your dog or to your family. Love your dog, but make sure your dog is the lowest member of your pack and you will have a much easier time with obedience and basic good behavior. How to stop puppy growling Growling is often the first step for dog aggression. Or, if you try and take a toy away from your dog. No matter how or when you see the aggression start, it is important to nip it in the bud right away. A sharp NO command sometimes is all that is needed, especially if it is well-timed with the first sign of the growl or nip. Other times you may need to grab your dogs muzzle and squeeze. If these corrections do not seem to be helping, I would immediately crate my dog if it growled at me. Be sure you do not let your dog out of the crate while he is exhibiting a growling behavior. Only let him out if he is behaving appropriately. How to stop puppy nipping or biting A dog that nips or bites you often started as a very young puppy. We teach our puppies at 8-weeks-old that biting and nipping people is not allowed. And at this very young age, they learn it very quickly. Your pup may cry out or squirm, but that is fine. In fact, you need to be quite stern to make an impression. If it continues, you are not being firm or consistent enough. How to stop puppy growling while tugging During play, it is not uncommon for retriever puppies to growl and tug at toys, blankets, even your pant leg. This behavior is usually just playful and natural. However, I would still try to end this behavior as soon as possible. While almost harmless at first, this behavior can escalate quickly as your dog grows bigger and stronger. You can end this behavior first by not participating in it. If you start tugging with a toy with your puppy, you are going to encourage the behavior. The second step is to discourage the behavior with a sharp NO command. It can help if you say GIVE when you take the item. This will start to teach him the GIVE command that will be helpful later if you are a hunter. How to stop puppy baring his teeth A puppy or dog that bares his teeth to you is threatening to bite you. Even if the puppy goes no further than to bare the teeth and growl, you need to end this behavior. This behavior is far more dangerous than the puppy that nips at your hand. The nips may be done in play, since that is how puppies play with one another, but baring of teeth and growling is different. And you must handle it differently. I am not talking about lifting your dog off the floor with the shake, but if your puppy is very young, that may indeed be a great correction. Have you ever witnessed a mama dog correct her puppies? This is not a violent thing, just a natural correction for a puppy. The puppies rarely cry out or whimper when given this correction, they just walk away and understand that the behavior they were exhibiting is not acceptable. If your dog continues to bare his teeth even after this correction, you may have a bigger problem on your hands, and I would proceed carefully. True dog aggression is no joking matter. Dogs with aggression problems can snap at any time and go from baring their teeth to full out attacks. Hyper behavior is different from aggression. A hyper dog has a lot of energy and may not know how to control or channel that energy. Often hyper behavior is a genetic trait. In this sense, it is not something that you can eliminate. But you can take steps to make it more manageable. Exercise more Dogs that are hyper need more exercise than dogs that are more docile in nature. If your dog is hyper and is not getting enough exercise, the hype behavior is going to drive the dog to other behaviors that you may not enjoy such as chewing up your dining room table leg or your favorite pair of shoes. For instance, if your dog is hyper and is jumping up and down all the time, and you not only allow the jumping but pet him or her and give praise while your dog is jumping, then you are unknowingly rewarding the jumping behavior. Give your puppy time to mature Retrievers are often full of energy while they are young, well some a bit longer, but tend to slow down as they mature. But as they mature they do usually slow down and become a bit less energetic. Training Highly energetic dogs can benefit greatly from structured training programs. Programs such as the ones we offer here at Otter Tail Kennels, can teach an energetic dog control and channel their energy into hunting or retrieving which can make home life more manageable. There are even some things you can do at home to get more control of your energetic dog. Practice sitting I know this sounds boring, and for you it is. But for an energetic dog that does not like sitting at all, having them sit for 30 seconds, or a minute or two can be very challenging. They will need many reminders at first, but over time they will learn to settle and sit calmly. You can slowly increase the amount of time. This simple obedience drill will help your dog learn control. Teach your dog the kennel command so that when you say Kennel, they run into their crate and stay there until you release them. This basically sends your dog on a time out and forces them to practice control and settle. Final thoughts on why my puppy is so hyper and aggressive For dogs under 6 months of age, much hyper and aggressive behavior is simply puppy play. You must teach your puppy boundaries and the earlier you teach them the better. Be consistent in your corrections and persistent, and over time you will reap the benefits. You can email me ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time happy retrieving. Are Golden Retrievers Aggressive? The Honest Truth Posted on April 5, by Galen Kauffman Share: Golden Retriever owners will most times be highly indignant if you dare to suggest that their Goldens have even an iota of aggression in them. They will be quick to tell you that dog experts will even use this big golden, friendly dog as an example breed when looking to confirm what a calm, amicable dog is. And the puppies? Are golden Retrievers aggressive as puppies? Not at all. Alright, so as a puppy it is only natural that he will nip and bite your hand as he is teething. He has the cutest little growl too. However, not training your puppy and not taking him along to socialization classes can allow this puppy habit to develop into something serious. Is Aggression Common in Golden Retrievers? Are Golden Retrievers aggressive? Only very seldom. Calm and laid back as your Golden Retriever is, there are going to be times when your golden doggo may be aggressive. They are loving, playful, calm, friendly, smiling, amiable dogs. Are male Golden Retrievers aggressive more often than females? Not really. As mentioned, these dogs are rarely aggressive, but it is more likely that the male Golden Retriever will be more aggressive than the female. Aggression in Golden Retrievers nearly always comes from poor breeding, bad dog owners, inadequate training, and lack of socialization. You can also add in abuse, neglect, and cruelty. Golden Retrievers are known as control groups for aggression A control group is a standard to which comparisons are made in a dog aggression experiment. There is a control group and an experimental group. The inclusion of a control group helps the researcher to make conclusions from the study. It is only with a control group that a researcher can determine whether a treatment can have an effect on an experimental group. In the study, golden retrievers were tested and used as a control group. Seventy Golden Retrievers were tested in the temperament test. Levels of escalation in aggressive behavior were scored. A total of .Goldens are not typically aggressive Most Golden Retriever owners are familiar with the good-natured temperaments of their Goldens, and they would consider an aggressive Golden Retriever to be an unheard-of thing. Dogs are like kids and the Golden is just a big loving child wanting to please you. And rightly so. Nobody in their right mind would want an aggressive Golden Retriever around their small children. Nonetheless, even though the chances are almost nil that your Golden has any aggression in him, there are one or two factors that can cause aggression in Golden Retrievers, and with good reason, and we look at some of them below. Fear Fear causes any dog faced with a threat to defend itself by biting. Veterinary behavior specialists tell us that fear-related aggression is just that — it is used as self-defense. It may well be out of sheer desperation that a cornered dog bites when it anticipates a threat. A Golden Retriever that has been regularly smacked learns to generalize — believing that every human hand wants to strike him. He goes into self-protection mode by biting the hand that reaches out to him. Fear is also instilled in a dog such as the Golden Retriever when an owner uses harsh, cruel punishment-based training methods. Harsh behavior increases aggression but also anxiety. Danger Dogs act in unusual ways when they sense danger. Can Golden Retrievers be aggressive in the face of danger? This abuse can take different forms. Goldens who have suffered from emotional and physical abuse can respond to anyone with aggression. He will in all likelihood be scared, agitated, and aggressive. Socializing your Golden Retriever will prepare him for a broad range of situations so that he is able to interact with various animals, people, and situations. It teaches him to react to the world out there in a calm way without fear and aggression. Illness Aggression in a Golden Retriever can have a medical cause. Just like the human child gets whiney, cranky, and aggressive when ill and with a bad headache, our canine friends do as well. Medically-induced aggression in a Golden Retriever can result in warning signs of growling, baring teeth, and general aggression. Brain inflammation occurs in conditions such as rabies and encephalitis. The aggression in this instance is most times a neurological reaction to the effect of the inflammation on the brain. Low thyroid levels affect mood and thyroid therapy can relieve aggression in dogs with hypothyroidism. Dogs are like humans in some ways and if they have woken up feeling under the weather, they may respond by showing signs of aggression. Injury There are many causes of aggression in dogs and injury is a common cause of canine aggression. Your Golden Retriever is nearly always a well-behaved dog, so if he suddenly shows signs of aggression, you just know there is something unusual up with him. If you find him acting out of character and wanting to nip you, get him to the vet as soon as possible for a thorough examination. He could have chewed on something that has caused injury to the teeth or even lodged somewhere, causing injury and pain inside the mouth. Irresponsible Breeding Canine aggression always poses concerns. Aggression in dogs is researched by people wanting to understand breed differences. Research always reveals that the Golden Retriever is a calm, good-natured golden beauty with hardly an aggressive bone inside him. But what about irresponsible breeding? A dog can suffer from all kinds of complications in pregnancy and when ignored because of the costs it can be tragic and heartbreaking. A responsible Golden Retriever breeder is one who knows the breed well and who has health clearances to show that both parents are free of genetic disorders. They follow the AKC breed guidelines for health testing. The test includes hips, elbows, thyroid tests, hearing tests, DNA testing, and heart tests. Also before breeding, dog parents need additional tests for Brucellosis testing and both dogs need to be up to date with all their vaccinations. Their characteristics, their bad attitude, their lack of affection, their lack of concern, and their troublesome lifestyle all cause aggression in Golden Retrievers. Signs of Aggression in Golden Retrievers Golden Retrievers are sometimes like other dogs in showing their aggression and they will growl and bark while simultaneously becoming hyperactive. Their floppy ears are raised, the feathered tail is raised and stiff and their hackles are raised. If your Golden has turned into a bit of a biter, snapper, and growler, there has to be a good reason. So how does one stop aggression in Golden Retrievers? Socializing Ensure that your Golden Retriever puppy stays with his mother until he is 8 weeks of age. Just like young kids have to be disciplined in order for them to display appropriate behavior, your puppy Golden will need to be trained and socialized. Check out with your local vet where the best puppy socialization classes are. Choosing a Good Breeder By the time your Golden Retriever puppy is 8 weeks old, he is ready to go to his new home. The way he has developed so far will be dependent on how the breeder has raised him and his siblings. Puppies kept in an unloving, cold, hostile environment will have aggressive tendencies later on and not be able to function properly in your household. Choose a good breeder very carefully. My Golden Retriever Puppies has just what you want, after all, they are the trusted source for responsibly-raised Golden Retriever Puppies in Ohio. Know your breeder and find yourself a healthy, lively, happy, amicable Golden who has been raised with love and care and dying to shower you with Golden Retriever kisses. Training Although it is difficult to find one iota of aggression in a Golden Retriever, any kind of aggressive behavior can be avoided with proper training. Apart from early socialization, you can train your dog firmly, fairly, and consistently. You could also allow a reputable professional dog behaviorist or trainer to train your Golden to mix with other people and dogs without showing aggressive tendencies. Positive reinforcement training is great when a tasty treat is given as a reward for the desired behavior. Never confuse your dog, and make sure that everyone in the family uses the same signs and commands that he is familiar with. Exercise If you want to avoid aggression in your Golden Retriever, exercise him. Dog aggression is a concern for any dog owner and even your mild, calm Golden can begin to feel the stirrings of aggression when he is never exercised. The Golden Retriever is a large dog and he is also a sporting breed. Your Golden will need a consistent workout every day for at least 20 minutes at a time. Hitting a ball for him with a tennis racquet can be an excellent running exercise for him. You have to be patient with him and show him kindness, gentleness, and fairness when training him. Conclusion Are Golden Retrievers aggressive? They can be, but only under certain circumstances. It is things such as improper breeding, abuse, and fear from humans that put aggression into any dog. Know your Golden and get him to the vet if you suspect uncharacteristic aggression which could be brought on by pain or illness. You can easily find one by checking out our puppies here! Golden Retriever aggression has been classified in several ways — dog aggression, food aggression, aggression towards strangers, and aggression towards family members are some of the common types. Aggressive Golden Retriever Dog : rare but it can happen. It is rare for a Golden Retriever dog to turn out to be aggressive, but it can happen. There are many causes for this type of behavioral issues. In some cases, poor propagation can result in an aggressive Golden Retriever. Dominance issues are one of the most common reasons for aggression. Most often times, Golden Retriever dog aggression issues will simply be acting out of fear. This is acknowledged as defensive aggression. For instance, if your golden was hurt by a big dog or young child when she was youthful, she may react aggressively when uncovered to these triggers later on in life. Dealing with defensive aggression can be scary and irritating at the same time. While you do not want to scare your dog or cause more emotional trauma, you naturally want to decrease the incidences of aggressive behavior. One of the most important things you can do when dealing with defensive aggression is to not disregard the problem. It is important to deal with the issues as soon as possible mainly because aggression can increase over time if not properly addressed. Aggressive behavior can begin with some Golden retriever dogs when they are as youthful as five or six weeks old! This is why it is very important to invest in your golden retriever from a reputable breeder. One good way to stop aggressive behavior is to make sure that your dog or puppy is properly socialized. A critical period for socialization is from the time a dog is 6 weeks old until he or she is 14 weeks old. Following your puppy is weaned and has received her first sequence of shots, you can take her out in public. Some people choose to socialize their dog in public before she has acquired shots. You can minimize the risk of your dog contracting a virus by holding her while out in public. Aggressive behavior in any dog is easy to spot, ears will be laid back, teeth showing and body more in a downward slant as if to attack its prey. In addition, you should be able to recognize the signs of dog aggression to learn how to deal with an aggressive golden retriever dog. This signs can include: Dominate aggression is typically the bully type of aggression, which can lead to food dominance or having problems with dogs or people. Fear aggression typically happens when the dog is so afraid that they go into a fight or flight mode. Typically their tail may be between their legs even when they are showing signs of aggression. Territorial aggression happens when there is typically more than one dog in the home and one is territorial over food or toys. Some dogs become very aggressive when they are possessive of their owners. This means that they may bite or growl if others approach their owner. Many dogs become aggressive with punishment which is the direct cause of humans. This means harsh punishment which is abuse can lead to the dog becoming aggressive to protect itself. Some dogs display aggression when they are in pain, especially a senior dog, therefore it is important not to lift a dog that is in pain. Maternal aggression, if your golden retriever dog just had a liter of puppies, you might not want to begin playing with the puppies straight away because this can cause the motherly instinct to kick in and make her aggressive toward you. It is important to recognize the type of golden retriever aggression that your dog is displaying because sometimes it is just situational, such as pain aggression. Dogs are like people and they deal with pain differently, which means that some dogs want you to comfort them when they are in pain and others want you to leave them alone. It is vital you know the cues your dog is giving you so that you understand if it is situational or if your dog needs obedience training. While golden retrievers are not know for their aggressiveness, any dog in certain situations can become aggressive. Half of all the dogs out there bite someone or another dog at least once in their life. Dog biting is not desired behavior, no matter whether it is aimed at humans or dogs you need to put a stop to it as early as possibly can. By stopping this behavior as early as you can you will be able to prevent the chance of your dog developing anti-social habits. If you can stop your dog from biting as early as you can then you will be able to have a nice friendly dog which will not be a risk to other dogs or other people. When stopping dog biting too many people don't stop to think about the actual reasons for it happening, actually Golden Retriever aggression and biting are two very natural things when they are in danger or feel threatened. Your dog might bite because he is scared or for a variety of other reasons. If your dog is stressed for example then he might bite, just think about what you do when you're in a foul mood. Some people may become aggressive when they are in a bad mood, and dogs are exactly the same. There are different ways that humans can relieve this pressure, however dogs don't have as many options. In order to stamp out Golden Retriever aggression and biting you need to show your dog that any such behavior is completely unacceptable to you. There are a number of different things that can cause dog biting and aggression, including fear, when they are with young, or when they feel threatened. If you are aware what causes dog aggression and biting then you may be able to avoid all of these things. The next important step that you want to look at is training your dog, you will be able to train your dog so that he doesn't show any aggression. It's possible to do this training yourself or with the help of a professional. If you train your dog properly then he will be able to know that it is wrong to bite. There are also a number of other options that you have when you want to find ways to stop your dog biting. If you notice that your dog is biting from a young age then you stand a better chance of getting the problem sorted out easily. You need to socialize your puppy with other people and dogs to make him feel comfortable around strangers. Try to get your dog used to other people touching and petting him, you can do this by allowing your dog to sniff each new person before they are allowed to pet him. Your dog will enjoy this as it is like a handshake! Make sure that you do not tease your Golden Retriever dog, teasing your dog might get some good reactions but it's not good for your puppy. Teasing games will only aggravate the puppy and make him annoyed. So if you have a puppy that is biting then now is the right time to start training him not to bite. A puppy's bites may not hurt at this stage, however they will do very soon! Make sure that you socialize your dog and get him completely used to strangers before he reaches adulthood. If you do all of these things then you should be able to stop your dog being one of the ones that bites other people! Nobody wants a Agressive Golden Retriever that bites, fortunately you don't have to put up with it any longer! You will learn how to deal with it. This means that you should never discipline your young puppy harshly, especially if she is between 8 to 10 weeks old. When you discipline your dog, do not hit her with your hand or another object, yell at her, or use other harsh discipline methods. This can actually backfire and cause more aggression, especially if your dog is defensive aggressive. In Golden Retrievers, the majority of the cases of dog aggression and food aggression have genetic components. According to one such study, breeding for calmness in Golden Retrievers have messed the fundamental brain chemistry of the dog resulting in unwanted aggression. Selective breeding against the nature of the dog has fastened the process. However, if a Golden Retriever has developed a dog aggression or food aggression we can at least control it through proper socialization and obedience training. Living conditions, excessive punishment, being attacked or frightened by an aggressive dog also influence aggression in Golden Retrievers. While genetics may play a role in raising aggressive behavior, environment can play a huge role. If your dog is abused or neglected, she will have a very good chance of starting to be aggressive. A dog that has poor living conditions, very harsh masters and no social expertise is very most likely to develop behavior issues. If your dog shows aggressive behavior immediately after one year of age, you will need to address the problem quickly. You may need to enlist the help of a trained professional to do this. Recall that it is important to not reward your dog for aggressive behavior. If you deal with your dog or pet your dog immediately immediately after aggressive behavior, you are in essence rewarding that behavior. If your dog becomes aggressive since it is fearful, you will need to take some time to work on social competencies and socialization. You should also seek the advice of a trained professional who has practical experience dealing with defensive aggressive behaviors. Aggression can be controlled. Nonetheless, it is very important to take the steps necessary to solve the problem as an alternative of ignoring behaviors and hoping that they will go away on their own. Here are some tips for Controling Agressive Golden Retrievers Aggressive Behavior : Firstly you need to work out why your dog is biting. Once you know the reasons then you will be able to isolate these and work on correcting them. We're going to take a look at a few tips which might be enough to make your life slightly easier. Social Life While your Golden Retriever puppy is young you should make sure that he socializes with as many other dogs as possible. This will help him to understand that the other dogs and people are not a threat, and in actual fact they can all get on like a house on fire! When your Golden Retriever puppy is young it might look cute when your puppy bites, however it's certainly not cute when your puppy gets older! Praise Another option is to reinforce everything good that he does. Whenever he does anything right then give him lots of praise. Positive reinforcement is thought to be much more effective than negative punishment. Though Golden Retrievers are equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them, they sometime show aggression towards both of them. The reasons may vary for a Golden Retriever aggression towards strangers and towards family members. One reason why a Golden Retriever shows aggression towards strangers is that they might never have the chance to get used to them. Again proper socialization and lot of outings can solve the problem. Socializing Golden Retriever means that you start exposing them to a wide variety of new experiences, new people, and new animals from a young age. Aggression towards family members can be commonly because of two reasons— either your Golden Retriever is trying to defend himself from a perceived threat, which he sees in any of the family member or he is not comfortable with the treatment he is getting from you or other members of the family. Golden Retrievers have an overly-possessive behavior and when you try to take away his belongings or you approach it when it is eating, they develop aggression against you. This resource guarding nature of Golden Retrievers which gives rise to aggression actually boils down to the issue of dominance. Your Golden Retriever has a tendency to rank each member of the family, and has his own perception of where he ranks in that environment as well. And a higher-ranked Golden Retriever acts aggressively in defense of resources. The best way to treat Golden Retriever aggression is consistent and frequent obedience work with lot of socialization. In fact, the earlier you start the socialization process the lesser are the chances of aggression. Golden Retrievers also show aggression if they are not handled and groomed properly. Lunging Biting Dogs can display these behaviors toward adults or children, as well as other dogs or animals in the home. However, they can also act aggressively toward strangers or unfamiliar pets. What should you do if you see these signs of aggression in your dog? If you ignore this behavior, someone could get hurt. To address the underlying issue, seek professional help from a licensed dog trainer or animal behaviorist. If they do show signs of aggression, there is a reason. So, what causes this kind of dog aggression? Causes of Aggression in Golden Retrievers Are golden retrievers aggressive in most cases? But do golden retrievers have the propensity to act aggressively as a result of certain factors, just like any dog breed? Food aggression and resource guarding is relatively common among dogs, including the golden retriever. Dogs might also be possessive about their toys, bedding, a certain room in the house, or a certain family member. Dominance Because dogs are pack animals, they tend to look for hierarchy. Aa dog may try to assert their dominance over another pet or, in some very rare cases, a family member. We generally find golden retrievers are fantastic family dogs. Fear Another type of aggression is fear-based aggression. Fear aggression occurs when your dog is frightened of something or gets startled. A loud noise like thunder, a stranger in the house, or the prospect of a car ride could trigger this. They can be, just like any dog. A golden could snap when someone steps on their tail or massages a sore arthritic joint too hard. They can help alleviate joint pain, improve mobility, and help with long-term joint health. Abuse or neglect can result in a fear or distrust of humans and other animals, so a golden who has experienced this kind of mistreatment could be more likely to act out aggressively. However, like any other dog breed, they can display aggressive behavior under some circumstances. The question is, how can you avoid such circumstances and encourage more positive responses? Here are the best ways to avoid bad behavior, including canine aggression, when you own a golden retriever: Give Proper Training Dog owners can avoid many behavioral problems with good long-term training. Your dog should know the fundamental commands like sit, stay, come, heel, and lay down. They should also be crate and leash trained. If you need some help, consult a dog trainer for help or enroll your pet in obedience training classes. Kids need to know that your dog is not a toy and needs to be given the proper space and respect. Socialize Your Dog Proper socialization means exposing your dog to a wide variety of people, animals, situations, and environments at a young age. That way, your pooch grows up familiar with everything they may encounter as an adult, which helps to avoid unwanted behavior like aggression. You can socialize an older dog as well as a golden retriever puppy — it just might take a little more time and patience. Positive reinforcement is a much better tactic. This means rewarding your pet with treats and verbal praise when they exhibit good behavior and correcting them when they need it, rather than resorting to punishment. Choose a Reputable Breeder Are golden retrievers aggressive when they come from a breeder? Not necessarily, but poor breeding practices can certainly contribute to aggression. Dogs who come from backyard breeders or crowded settings may have had to compete for food, toys, or territory, increasing the likelihood of aggression later in life. Most shelters work with the dogs in their care to make sure they have basic training and socialization. Are Golden Retrievers Aggressive or Not? Are golden retrievers aggressive? No, not inherently. On the contrary, golden retrievers are extremely friendly dogs who are social, affectionate, gentle creatures. They tend to get along very well with adults, kids, and other pets, making the golden one of the best dogs for families. While golden retrievers are not aggressive by nature, there are several possible reasons why they might show aggression. Any dog can be possessive, try to assert dominance, be afraid or in pain, or come from a background of abuse or neglect. To avoid aggression in your golden retriever, commit to training them and socializing your pet. Last but not least, adopt your dog from a reputable breeder or shelter that has instilled some training and positive socialization already. Browse the Native Pet blog. Read more. We look at a few of the factors that can cause aggression in Golden Retrievers and a few of the common warning signs. We also look briefly at the methods that you can use to help prevent aggression in your Golden. Abuse This is an unfortunate truth. Neglect Neglect is absolutely a form of abuse. It can be withdrawing any kind of love or affection or even just attention from a dog, but it can also include not providing the dog with the basic necessities of life, such as food and water. When a Golden has been malnourished, they start to exhibit food-guarding behavior , which includes growling and biting at anyone or anything while they are eating. Image Credit: chendongshan, Shutterstock 3. This is considered one of the most common causes of aggression in most dogs. Illness or Pain Dogs that are in pain or are sick can react with aggression. They feel vulnerable, and if they are in pain or some form of discomfort, they can lash out in a protective or defensive reaction. Specific Illnesses This is different from a dog feeling sick. There are certain illnesses that can cause aggression. The most famous is rabies, but hormonal imbalances or metabolic and genetic disorders can also cause aggression, such as hypothyroidism, neoplasia, and psychomotor epilepsy, to name a few. Image Credit: Piqsels 6. Danger or Threat All dogs will react aggressively if they feel threatened or feel the need to protect their territory , including their families. This is particularly true for a mother dog protecting her puppies. A dog without the proper socialization will be nervous and fearful in new situations and around new people. Image Credit: pixels, Shutterstock 9. But they can also breed undesirable traits into their puppies. So, if the parents or grandparents had aggressive natures, this might be passed down to the next generations. The Warning Signs It is helpful to recognize the warning signs before a dog acts out from aggression. A few of these will be obvious, but most signs can be overlooked or misunderstood. Body language that your Golden might display, in order of the aggression ramping up, include: Squinting, turning head or body away from the situation, and avoidance of eye contact Licking of the lips or yawning Flattening of the ears tightly against the head Crouching down and tucking the tail under the body Freezing in place and stiffening of the body Growling Snapping Biting These are all signs that a bite might be imminent, so proceed with caution if your dog is exhibiting these signs. That said, many of these tips can be applied to almost any dog at any age. Image Credit: Piqsels 1. Socialization Just as improper socialization can lead to eventual aggression, the right socialization can prevent it. When your puppy or dog is introduced to as many environments, situations, people, and animals as possible, they gradually learn to not be afraid of new things. Using praise, pets, and treats when your dog does something right is the best method for training all breeds. Image Credit: Piqsels 3. Find a Good Breeder The genetics of the dog is important and so is how the breeder raises the puppies. Patience and Love This is important for every single dog out there but is particularly true for rescue dogs. Rescue dogs will gradually learn to trust again. Image Credit: Standret, Shutterstock 5. If you have a handle on what causes an aggressive reaction from your dog, try to fix it. But first take your dog to the vet to rule out any injury or illness. Exercise Ensure that your Golden is receiving plenty of exercise. They are energetic dogs that need to engage in many types of activities and training, which effectively reduces aggressive behavior. You should also look into enrolling your dog in obedience classes or even agility trials and dock diving. These dogs are hard-working, and if you give them a job to do, they are less likely to become aggressive. They are the fourth most intelligent dog breed behind the Border Collie , Poodle , and German Shepherd , and they are highly sensitive dogs. The first sign of any kind of aggression needs to be addressed, even if it means talking to an animal behaviorist or vet. Just spend time with your Golden and give them plenty of love and attention, and that dog will absolutely be devoted and confident and unquestionably, a happy and loving companion!

F1 Generation The F1 generation of a Pinny Poo dog is the first generation produced by crossing a purebred Miniature Pinscher with an extremely popular Poodle, specifically the Miniature Poodle. This hybrid cross results in offspring that possess a combination of the distinctive character traits of these parent breeds. F1 Pinny Poos often have a medium length, curly coat, a trait inherited from the Poodle parent breed. F1B Pinny Poos are more likely to possess the curly coat, small size, and high energy of the Poodle gene, making them great pets for individuals with known allergies. The result is a more varied genetic makeup, with a greater range of possible appearances and temperaments. This generation can show a more balanced mix of traits from the Miniature Pinscher and Miniature Poodle. Their coats can range from short to long, and the most common color combination may vary. Given their lineage, F2 Pinny Poos continue to be active dogs requiring daily exercise, and they maintain the affectionate nature that makes them great companions and family pets. Pinny Poo History The Pinny Poo, a delightful hybrid cross of the Miniature Pinscher and the Miniature Poodle, is a relatively recent addition to the world of designer dogs. The Miniature Pinscher The Miniature Pinscher, one of the parent breeds of the Pinny Poo, has a long history dating back several centuries. Known for its spirited and fearless nature, the Miniature Pinscher brings a lively personality to the Pinny Poo mix. The Miniature Poodle The Miniature Poodle, the other parent breed, has a rich history, notably in France, but it actually originated in Germany. Used for truffle hunting and as circus dogs due to their intelligence and trainability, Poodles have long been popular pets. Their height usually ranges from 12 to 14 inches, making them an ideal size for both apartment living and larger households. The texture of the coat can vary, usually wavy, reflecting the Poodle gene, but sometimes it can be straight, showing the influence of the Miniature Pinscher. Coat colors vary and come in black, black and tan, brown and white, and brown and tan. Their coat is not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, but it can often be more tolerable for individuals with mild allergies. The head is usually long and refined, reminiscent of the Miniature Pinscher, and the tail is often docked, though this can depend on the preference of the breeder or owner. This gives them a perky, alert look. The eyes of a Min Pin Poodle mix are small and beadlike, usually expressing a lively and affectionate nature. The muzzle is typically dark and well-defined, contributing to their overall handsome appearance. On average, a healthy Miniature Pinscher Poodle mix can live between 10 to 15 years. Living Environment and Space Requirements The Min Pin Poodle mix, being a small dog, can easily adapt to a variety of living environments, making them a good choice for both apartment dwellers and those with larger homes. However, as an active dog with high energy levels, they need sufficient space to move around and expend their excess energy. They tend to do better in moderate climates and may need extra care in very cold weather. During the colder months, a doggie sweater could be a good idea to help keep them warm during walks outside. They can get along well with older kids who understand the etiquette of good behavior around dogs, but their small size might make them a little delicate for households with very small children. Make sure to provide them with a balanced diet, regular vet check-ups, and plenty of love and attention. They are active dogs that enjoy daily exercise, be it a game of fetch, a trip to the dog park, or a short walk around the neighborhood. They are alert and aware of their surroundings, a trait inherited from the Miniature Pinscher. Social and Friendly Pinny Poos generally have a friendly disposition. They are social dogs that enjoy interacting with people and other pets. However, socialization from a young age is crucial to ensure they grow up to be well-rounded dogs. Their affectionate, intelligent, and lively nature, combined with their adaptability, makes them a great choice for many dog lovers. Their grooming needs are moderate and primarily depend on the type of coat they inherit from their parent breeds. Depending on the texture and length of their coat, brushing times a week should be sufficient. A slicker brush or a comb designed for long-haired dogs can be helpful in removing loose hair and preventing tangles. Bathing Bathing your Miniature Pinscher Poodle mix should be done as needed, usually once every month or so, unless they get particularly dirty from outdoor activities. Using a dog-friendly shampoo can help maintain the natural oils in their skin and coat. Always make sure to rinse thoroughly to prevent any residue from causing skin irritation. Regular checks and cleaning with a vet-recommended solution can help prevent the buildup of wax and debris, reducing the risk of infection. Nails Like all dogs, Pinny Poos require regular nail trimming to prevent overgrowth and splitting. Brushing their teeth several times a week can help prevent tartar buildup and gum disease. Additionally, providing dental chews can help maintain oral health. While the Miniature Pinscher Poodle mix is relatively low maintenance in terms of grooming compared to some other breeds, regular care of their coat, ears, nails, and teeth is necessary to keep them looking their best and feeling healthy. Puppies have a lot of energy, but they also tire quickly, so several shorter play sessions might be more suitable. It helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces the risk of many health problems, and can even help with behavioral issues by burning off excess energy. Plus, exercise is a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your Min Pin Poodle mix.
