It is a sad reality that many dogs who have spent years as a member of the family wind up in shelters. But it is not necessarily a sad ending for some of these loving dogs. Beth Burstein sent in this wonderful story about a Pug named Peanut. The minute I met him I was enamored with him. It was a combination of his personality, his adorable face, and…that tongue! His story also really touched me. We had recently lost our senior Yorkie and were very lucky to contact Randolph Shelter. Peanut was very thin, needed major dental work and general healthcare, but he is a sweet lovable fellow who recently celebrated his 11th birthday. He is now a healthy and happy member of a new family. Definitely a rags to riches story! I loved watching him enjoying his home, especially knowing his history. He takes his time getting around, so I photographed him wherever it was shady outside of his house — as you can see he was tuckered out at the end of our brief shoot! I think the heat and humidity had something to do with that…I was pretty tuckered out that day too! For more adorable pets and wildlife photography, be sure to follow Beth on Facebook. The vast majority of pigeon-chested dogs have perfectly normal, happy lives. The dogs starring in this article are Pepper and Ginger. Their bones grew abnormally in the womb. Frenchies are one of the breeds with a greater risk of having this deformity. Most often, when Pepper or Ginger have this problem, other dogs in their family line have it as well. This is the more complex of the two. In this case, the breastbone looks like a Z with the top of the Z pushing outward. The other letter condition is Chrondrogladiolar prominence. This is far more common. If Ginger has this, it looks as if the lower breastbone is pushing outward. Pectus carinatum is a disfigurement of the rib. It looks like the chest bows outward instead of having the normal curve. The manubrium the front of the breastbone comes to a point. Your vet can feel this bone even when your puppy is young. Females like Ginger can count themselves lucky as they are less likely to develop this problem. A pigeon-chested French Bulldog may have other physical abnormalities. One is having short ribs. He may have a very thin waist as well. Now for some good news. As they grow, you and your vet can watch to make sure things stay as they are. If the condition is more pronounced, your vet may suggest physical therapy for your Frenchie. What about Surgery? It is only in the worst cases that Ginger might undergo surgery to fix the problem. This entails removing the affected bone and swapping it out with a fiberglass cast. Hey, they can rebuild dogs much like some human parts. If Ginger was having difficulty breathing before, she should show improvement. When you bring Ginger home, she will be sore. Take her out briefly for a potty stop, but then return her to her cave. During recovery, Ginger may receive painkillers and antibiotics. See also Does Jif Have Xylitol? Inbreeding worsens the risk factors. Talk to your vet about the problem and recommended treatments to make them feel good and live full lives. If, however, the condition was noticed afterward, you should notify that breeder. Someone should never breed a dog with a pigeon chest. At this juncture, you should have a conversation with your breeder as to why this happened, and what steps they are taking to rectify matters. If you plan to keep the pooch, you may be able to get some type of refund. There appears to be a general correlation between pectus carinatum and brachycephalic dogs flat-faced canines. Pepper and Ginger reach maturity between months. So, whatever their condition at this time remains lifelong. As a dog ages, they may have other conditions that, when coupled with Pigeon Chest, could affect the quality of life for your pooch. Pepper and Ginger will get along fine so long as you remain aware of their limitations. Unlike other French Bulldogs, they will not be going on long walks. Shorten them and stop when the pup seems tired. If need be, pick Ginger up and carry her home. Love them like you would any new fur baby in your home. Post Views: 1, Cjcarol said: Hi we have a new puppy. We have had her for a month. She is now 12 weeks. She was very lethargic so we took her to the vet. She was ok but the vet thought her chest was concerning so he took some xrays. Found she has pectus excavating my research not vets diagnosis. Her heart is more vertical and seems to be sitting at the bottom and her trachea is dropped because of the heart. We have an appt. We did get her from a breeder and had an intention of possibly breeding her. That is out of the question now as it is congenital. We are heartbroken at the thought of having to return her. In my research I never came across this condition. Is it common? Should the breeder have noticed it? She was taken to the vet for 1st shots and I thought an exam. There is a guarantee. We will contact her after we get the second opinion I am not looking to fault anyone just looking for more information. Click to expand.I was wondering if there was any update on this? Did you return her to her breeder after all? We are currently dealing with the same thing. We have our first vet appointment in a few days and we will hopefully get our answers there. But if it turns out that he does have this deformity we are not sure what to do. We signed a contract with the breeder and in that contract it states that we could return the puppy if it turns out to have a congenital disease which if the vet diagnoses him with this then it falls under that clause. I also read that there are some complications with this deformity as their chest is too narrow for their heart and lungs as they mature and sometimes their life span is cut short. We are already attached to the pup and are hoping to reach a good conclusion. Please, any advice would be appreciated thank you! Early detection and intervention can help minimize complications and improve the overall quality of life for dogs with pigeon chest. Spine Curvature and Scoliosis Spine curvature in French Bulldogs with pigeon chest may be caused by thoracic congenital vertebral body malformations, such as hemivertebra with kyphosis and scoliosis. Hemivertebrae form when the right and left halves of the developing vertebral body do not fuse, resulting in a body resembling a butterfly. Additionally, dwarfism may cause the vertebrae to become abnormally shaped, leading to hemivertebrae. Scoliosis, a symptom associated with spine curvature in French Bulldogs with pigeon chest, can further exacerbate the condition and lead to discomfort and pain. Seeking professional advice from a veterinarian is crucial for managing spine curvature and scoliosis in affected dogs. Causes of Chest Bone Deformities in Dogs As mentioned earlier, the primary cause of chest bone deformities in dogs is abnormal bone growth during development, which is believed to be due to genetic factors that are hereditary in certain breeds. The two main types of chest bone deformities in dogs are pectus carinatum pigeon chest and pectus excavatum sunken chest. Both conditions are present at birth, but the severity of the deformity may not be evident until the puppy starts exhibiting symptoms such as difficulty breathing and failure to thrive. The prognosis for chest bone deformities in dogs varies depending on the severity of the condition. Pectus excavatum generally has a favorable prognosis in young animals, with even severe cases responding well to surgical correction. Similarly, dogs with pectus carinatum often display mild or no symptoms, leading to an encouraging prognosis. Radiographs X-rays may be utilized to evaluate the severity of the deformity and to rule out other potential sources of chest deformity. An echocardiogram , which assesses the heart and lungs for any abnormalities related to the pigeon chest deformity, may also be performed. Early diagnosis is crucial for determining the appropriate course of treatment and managing the condition effectively. If you suspect your French Bulldog may have a pigeon chest, it is essential to consult with a veterinarian as soon as possible to ensure the best care for your beloved pet. Treatment Options for Pigeon Chest in French Bulldogs The treatment options for pigeon chest in French Bulldogs depend on the severity of the deformity and the presence of any associated symptoms. In some cases, physical therapy and manual compression may be sufficient to manage the condition. However, in more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the deformity and alleviate symptoms such as difficulty breathing. It is important to discuss the available treatment options with a veterinarian, who will take into account various factors, including the severity of the abnormality and the manifestation of symptoms, before recommending the most suitable course of action. Physical Therapy Physical therapy is a recommended treatment option for French Bulldogs with pigeon chest, which may be employed in combination with other treatments or as a single modality. Physical therapy can also help strengthen the muscles and ligaments surrounding the chest, potentially reducing the severity of the abnormality. However, physical therapy can be an uncomfortable experience for the dog and may lead to further pain and discomfort if not executed properly. It is imperative to ensure that the physical therapist is adequately experienced and knowledgeable in treating dogs with pigeon chest and that the exercises are conducted correctly. External Splints and Compression External splinting and compression are conservative treatment options for pigeon chest in French Bulldogs, particularly in younger dogs with more flexible thoraxes. Corrective splinting may also be utilized if the malformation is not severe enough to warrant surgery. These treatments involve the use of braces or casts to help rectify the deformity. Surgical Intervention In severe cases of pigeon chest deformity in French Bulldogs, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the affected bone and alleviate symptoms. The surgical procedure involves removing the pertinent bone and substituting it with a fiberglass cast. This treatment option is typically reserved for dogs experiencing significant respiratory distress or other complications as a result of the deformity. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, such as infection, pain, and scarring. However, the potential benefits include improved breathing and a more normal appearance. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of surgery with a veterinarian to determine if this is the best course of action for your French Bulldog. Preventing Pigeon Chest in French Bulldogs Preventing pigeon chest in French Bulldogs can be challenging, as the condition is primarily a result of genetic factors. However, there are certain steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of developing the condition, such as avoiding inbreeding and consulting a veterinarian if the deformity is present at birth. If you are considering getting a French Bulldog puppy, it is important to choose a reputable breeder who health tests their breeding dogs and refrains from breeding dogs with known chest deformities. This can help reduce the likelihood of acquiring a puppy with pigeon chest and ensure the overall health of future generations of French Bulldogs. Living with a Pigeon Chest French Bulldog Living with a pigeon chest French Bulldog can be a rewarding experience, as these dogs are known for their affectionate nature and charming personalities. However, it is essential to consistently monitor the health of your dog and provide the necessary care and support to ensure their well-being. It is also important to notify the breeder if you discover that your French Bulldog has a pigeon chest, as this information can help them make informed decisions about their breeding program. Summary In conclusion, pigeon chest is a chest bone deformity that affects French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic dog breeds. Understanding the symptoms, causes, and treatment options for this condition is essential for providing the best care for your beloved pet. As a responsible French Bulldog owner, educating yourself about the pigeon chest and working closely with your veterinarian will enable you to provide the best possible care for your pet. Bad limb angulations with ambulation difficulties Absence of testicles in the scrotum You should know that these are exceedingly rare, especially if you got your dog from a reputable breeder. What should you do? What do you do with a dog chest bone sticking out? If you discover that your Frenchie has an abnormal-looking chest, you should take the following actions: Wait and observe The fact is that pigeon chest is an extremely rare condition in French bulldogs, and even if it were present, they are able to live normal lives. If they do not seem to have any problems aside from the common ones , there is really nothing much you need to do about it except shower it with love and be the best dog parent you can be. Reduce exercise intensity On a similar note, you do not want to overload your Frenchie with too much exercise if you do notice that it has a pigeon chest. Since the structure of the chest bone is compromised, it might not do well when it comes to physical activities. Instead of going for minute walks, start with minute walks and slowly increase the amount of time. Keep a close eye on your dog and stop immediately if you notice breathlessness or signs that it is struggling. If your dog has a pigeon chest, you should inform your breeder so that it can stop breeding the ones affected. You should also expect an explanation from them about why this has happened, why they failed to inform you, and discuss a resolution. Most breeders have it in their contract that they will take responsibility if an incident like this comes up, so be sure to talk this through with them. Bring it to your vet for diagnosis The only way to be sure is to visit your vet. They have the right equipment and imaging machines to determine if indeed your puppy is suffering from pigeon chest or similar deformities. They are also able to advise you on the next best course of action. Only if you notice any issues that might cause major problems should you need to visit the vet. Pigeon chest, or pectus carinatum, is a deformity of the chest wall in dogs. It is characterized by a protrusion of the sternum and ribs. Pigeon chest can be caused by genetic factors or nutritional deficiencies during development. Treatment options include surgery, bracing, and physical therapy. Consultation with a veterinarian is recommended to determine the best course of action for your dog. Preventing pigeon chest in puppies involves providing a balanced diet and avoiding overfeeding or rapid growth. Understanding Pigeon Chest in Dogs Pigeon chest is characterized by a chest bone and rib disfigurement that causes the chest to bow outwards into a point instead of a curve. This can be caused by a malformation of the ribs and sternum, which results in the chest appearing sunken in or having a narrow chest. The condition can also occur due to a separation of the sternum and cartilage, thorax narrowing, and unusually shaped ribs causing a flat or sunken chest, which is known as pectus excavatum. The chest bone of a dog is made up of several components, including the manubrium, xiphoid process, keel, and posternum. The sternum, or breastbone, is the bone that runs down the center of the chest and is connected to the ribs. The thorax is the area of the body that contains the chest, ribs, and thoracic vertebrae. The forechest is the area of the chest that protrudes in front of the shoulders, and the floating ribs are the last two pairs of ribs that are not connected to the sternum. Pigeon chest in dogs can cause serious health problems, as the lungs and heart can be compressed by either of these disfigurements. In severe cases, surgery may be required to correct the condition. However, in many cases, it may not cause any health problems, but it can be unsightly and may make your dog uncomfortable. Breeds Prone to Pigeon Chest Pigeon chest is a condition that can occur in various breeds of dogs, but some are more prone to it than others. Here are some of the breeds that are known to be more susceptible to developing pigeon chest: Brachycephalic Breeds Breeds with short, flat faces, such as French Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Boston Terriers, are more prone to developing pigeon chest. This is because their shortened skulls often lead to a compressed ribcage, which can cause deformities in the chest. English Bulldogs English Bulldogs are also prone to developing pigeon chest due to their short, stocky build. This breed is also known to have a high incidence of other health issues, such as breathing problems, which can exacerbate the effects of pigeon chest. Pekingese Pekingese are another breed that is prone to developing pigeon chest. This breed has a relatively broad, flat chest, which can make it more susceptible to deformities. Beagles Beagles are more often afflicted with pectus carinatum than other breeds. This deformity can result from inbreeding, which is more common in this breed. Great Dane Great Danes are also prone to developing pigeon chest, but this is more often due to a genetic predisposition rather than inbreeding. Overall, pigeon chest is a condition that can affect any breed of dog, but some are more prone to it than others. Identifying Pigeon Chest in Dogs Symptoms of pigeon chest in dogs can vary depending on the severity of the deformity. In mild cases, the chest may appear slightly protruded, while in severe cases, the bone may be jutting out, resulting in a flat or sunken chest. In some cases, the curvature of the spine, also known as scoliosis, may also be present. If you suspect that your dog may have pigeon chest, it is important to consult with a professional veterinarian. A physical examination, x-rays, and an echocardiogram may be necessary to properly diagnose the condition. Treatment for pigeon chest in dogs may vary depending on the severity of the deformity. In mild cases, an external splint or brace may be used to help correct the chest wall deformity. In more severe cases, chest-wall bracing may be necessary to help reshape the chest wall and improve breathing. It is important to note that pigeon chest in dogs is a rare condition, and not all dogs with a protruding chest have this deformity. If you suspect that your dog may have pigeon chest, it is best to consult with a professional veterinarian to properly diagnose and treat the condition. Health Implications of Pigeon Chest in Dogs Pigeon chest in dogs is a condition that can lead to several health implications. Due to the lack of room for the heart and lungs, a pigeon-chested dog may experience breathing difficulties, exercise intolerance, and reduced endurance. In some cases, a pigeon-chested dog may develop a heart murmur, which can lead to heart problems. The lack of oxygen due to insufficient room for the lungs can cause a blue tint to the skin and mucus membranes cyanosis. Additionally, a pigeon-chested dog may experience difficulty walking, which can be caused by disfigured limbs or an umbilical hernia. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, it is essential to consult with a veterinarian. Treatment options may include surgery, medication, or a change in diet and exercise routine. It is crucial to address the health implications of pigeon chest in dogs to ensure that your furry friend can live a happy and healthy life. Treatment and Management of Pigeon Chest in Dogs If your dog has been diagnosed with pigeon chest, it is important to understand that treatment options will vary depending on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, treatment may not be necessary, and the dog can live a normal life. One treatment option for pigeon chest is external splinting. If you normally feed your dog once in the morning and once in the evening, add in one more meal right before bed. Start by feeding them the same amount spread out over more meals. If this does not help them gain weight, you may need to give them more food, adding a quarter to half a cup per meal. This type of feeding schedule allows your dog to nibble a little whenever they are hungry or bored, which may help them eat more overall. Keep in mind that free-feeding may not work for your dog. For some dogs, the excitement of getting their food at certain times during the day makes them eat more than if it was available to them all the time. Treats should not be a primary calorie source for your dog. Giving them a few extra treats throughout the day, though, can help your German Shepherd gain some weight. Some dogs find treats from your fridge to be more appealing than treats from a bag. Give your German Shepherd small amounts of cooked chicken mixed with rice, a spoonful of peanut butter, a scrambled egg, or some apple slices every day in addition to their normal food. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. A sprinkle of rice, a couple heaping spoonfuls of pumpkin, a bit of wet food, or a big spoonful of peanut butter mixed in with dry food could intrigue your dog into eating. Coconut oil has a lot of calories, and it's easy for dogs to digest. Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links. Do you want to know how to fatten up a German Shepherd to make them gain weight in a healthy way? Are you worried that your German Shepherd is thin and underweight and want to know how to bulk up a German Shepherd for safe weight-gain? Is Your German Shepherd Underweight? Your dog should have a trim, athletic appearance. They are large breed dogs with fast metabolisms that are active and energetic in their daily lives. Fit German Shepherds may at first seem slightly underweight. They are lean, athletic dogs with a strong, firm figure and you should avoid learning how to make a German Shepherd fat. Instead, you want to bulk-up your German Shepherd to make them fit. But if you see their ribs protruding or their hip bones raised and easily felt when petting, this is a sign of being underweight. You should first check with your vet for possible medical issues. You want to know if they are gaining weight, losing weight, or remaining the same. This helps you to decide if your weight gain plan is working — or if you need to adjust your plan. If your dog continues losing weight or if you see a lack of progress, take your dog back to your veterinarian. You need to see this as a long term plan and not an overnight fix to get your German Shepherd fat and by fat, I mean bulk-up not obese or overweight. Look for foods that have a higher percentage of fat and protein than your current food. Adults and seniors should eat about 20 to 25 percent of their daily calories from protein and 25 to 50 percent from fats. The rest of the calories should come from carbohydrates. This is anywhere from 8 months to a year or longer. Change to Puppy or High-Performance Food If you have an adult dog, switch them to a puppy or high-performance dog food to help them gain healthy weight. Both puppy and high-performance also known as a working breed food is higher in calories to support complex energy needs and sustained growth. Puppy foods generally have added nutrients to support puppy growth which can help your underweight German Shepherd gain weight and fatten up in a controlled manner — which is what you want. Mixing regular adult and puppy or high-performance food helps your GSD gain weight and fat in a regulated manner. For More Calories Feed Dry Kibble Dry kibble dog food generally has more calories if you want your dog to gain weight. Dry kibble is denser and contains more calories than wet food because the moisture has been removed from dry foods. Therefore, dry food has up to 4 times the number of calories as the same amount of wet food — dry kibble is a weight gaining powerhouse! If your dog is currently eating wet meals, then try mixing in some dry food with their wet food to help stimulate weight gain. Wet foods may taste better to your dog, so mixing in the dry foods with the wet still encourages your dog to eat in order to not lose more weight. Look for dry food with higher protein and fats to encourage weight gain in a healthy manner and go with one of the foods mentioned above for fat gain that is healthy. Begin by feeding your dog a bit more of their current food spread out over one more meal per day. Add a quarter to half a cup of extra food per meal. You can also take their regular feeding and the additional food and increase their feeding schedule to four times per day, splitting the food equally at each feeding. If your German Shepherd is picky about when they eat, then it may help to leave food out for them all the time. This is called free feeding. Dogs who can free feed tend to gain more weight than dogs fed on a schedule. Free feeding allows your dog the chance to eat a little whenever they are hungry or bored. This type of feeding may help them eat more overall. But only use free feeding with dry food, since wet foods spoil when left out for more than a couple hours. They may follow you around rather than eat when you offer their food bowl — this may be especially true of Shepherds since they tend to get fixated on their caretaker. But, just keeping your dog company while they eat may stimulate their appetite. Find a comfortable spot to sit and wait on your dog while they eat. Bring a book or do a quiet activity while they eat close to you. Simply sit with them and enjoy your time together while they eat. Keep the treats handy and offer them to help get extra calories into your dog. Adding these foods into their regular kibble may also entice them to eat more of their dry dog food, which can help an underweight puppy or adult. They also add extra calories which are healthy and nutritious. To get your dog more interested in their food, try sprinkling on a topping to their usual meals. You can even buy healthy toppers that are easy to add. Seniors, adults, and puppies all have various nutritional concerns. Most commercial and pre-made dog foods specify their intended age range on the packaging and state what groups the food is aimed at feeding. Underfeeding a German Shepherd puts your dog at a serious health risk. You need to make sure they get enough food for their age and energy needs. Puppies generally eat almost double the number of calories an adult dog needs, so be sure to check out this post on what amount to feed a German Shepherd puppy to keep them healthy. While a senior GSD may eat significantly fewer calories, if they are losing weight or underweight and a vet has been consulted, they may need extra feedings or food to help them gain the weight back. German Shepherds thrive on consistent physical activity. Walking and swimming are activities that build muscle and are lower impact and less intense on their joints and bones. They can be done every day to keep your dog active and help them to maintain their muscle mass. But these two exercises can be performed at a lower intensity so that even older dogs and puppies can enjoy their benefits make sure your puppy can swim first. Keeping muscle mass is important to prevent wasting and help maintain their health and mobility, as well as their athletic appearance. Try walking up hills to improve muscle growth or a gentle game of tug using a spring pole in which your dog can start and stop on their own. Some of the herbs used to increase human appetite are also safe for use in dogs. Dandelion is available in this for-1 multivitamin , along with other herbal supplements to make your GSD gain weight. B vitamins are natural appetite stimulants and are readily available over the counter and online. Visit Your Vet Regularly Always see your vet regularly. It can cause weight loss over time or even spread to other areas in the body if not treated quickly. Health problems that affect their weight can range widely. Parasites and worms are common issues in many dogs, while more severe problems like cancer and heart disease also cause unusual weight loss. Look for other symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and dizziness as they usually accompany weight loss when the dog suffers from a serious health issue. Your dog can get undesirable effects too. Not getting enough attention, training , exercise, or not socializing enough can lead to anxiety in your dog. Other causes include moving to a new home and bringing home a new pet. Think about what might be causing stress in your dog and consider how you can improve its overall living quality. Genetics Sometimes, the reason for a skinny German Shepherd can be as simple as its genetic factor. Most working German Shepherds are lean, so your dog will most probably be skinny because it is from this bloodline. Try to recollect how it looked when it was younger. Aging causes dental problems and appetite loss, which makes them skinny. However, it can also be because of deeper health problems brought about by aging, like cancer. Here are some effective options you can consider: Visit the Vet The foremost thing to do when your German Shepherd is suddenly losing weight is to see a vet. It is much easier to consume, making your pet want to eat more. Leave dry food instead of wet food, as they will remain fresh for longer. Homemade Treats Might Help Making treats for your dog at home ensures a healthier diet. Cheese and peanut butter are great options. While buying them, make sure to look for those high in calories. Note: Steer clear of grapes and chocolates while preparing homemade treats for your GSD. You can also help your dog gain back weight by following the above measures. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. So too will a GSD that is consuming low-quality food in general. Getting the calories right! Moderately active German shepherds need around calories per day, whereas highly active German shepherds need around calories per day. Highly active working GSDs may even need upwards of calories. Either the quality of the food is fine, but the portion sizes are too small too few calories , or the quality of the kibble is lacking. Again, this ties into calorie consumption. If your GSD is super active over 3 hours of exercise a day , she will likely need calories per day. Health issues In most cases, health issues are the cause of sudden weight loss. Health issues that affect weight can range from harmless and treatable all the way to serious, even fatal issues rarer. Common problems like worms and parasites particularly in puppies can cause weight loss. Rarer and more serious things like heart disease and cancer can also cause weight loss. Health problems usually always come with multiple symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, or any noticeable change from her normal self. If this is the case, then it would be evident right from puppyhood. If you were lucky enough to see the mum and other puppies in the litter, they would have all been similarly skinny. Some GSDs are just smaller than others. Stress and anxiety Just as stress can have many undesirable effects on us, it can do the same with our furry friends, too, weight loss being one of them. Common reasons include spending too much time alone, not receiving enough exercise, attention, or training. Additionally, it could be down to a change in their environment like moving homes, new neighbors, or even the addition of a household pet. Consider your GSDs overall quality of life, basic needs and think about the possibility of them being stressed. Bad eating habits Fussy eating is something many owners have to deal with at some point. The issue is that this could be the cause of weight loss. Once again, it comes back down to the calories in versus the calories out. I have an entire article dedicated to why your GSD might be refusing their food. Dental issues If your GSD is suffering from any kind of dental complaint, this could cause them to refuse their food and lose out on calories. So I think it deserves its own section. In fact, this was actually what happened with my GSD when she was 7. After refusing her food and simultaneously losing weight, I checked her mouth to find some serious gum irritation thankfully not gum disease. We got that resolved with the help of our veterinarian, and her appetite came back right away. Aside from using the scales, one of the best ways to know if your GSD is underweight or not is to simply feel them and look at their waistline. Ribs Run your hand along their side with light pressure. You should be able to feel their ribs a little this is normal! Waistline Waistline abdominal tuck should be noticeable but not extreme. Check out this chart from Petcarerx source. If the weight loss has happened suddenly for no obvious reason, it is advised to see a vet. Important note: If you suspect your GSD is losing weight for an alternative reason like stress or dental issues, the best solution would be to address those issues instead of adjusting their diet. Always consider the cause first. Add wet dog food My all-time favorite way to stop fussy eating while adding a boost of nutrition and calories is to mix in a small amount of wet dog food to their kibble. This is a known and safe method that veterinarians recommend to help with weight gain. Mix in some wet dog food preferably the same brand , and your GSD will likely benefit from this greatly. Add it once a day or every other day. This will enhance the flavor and beat most cases of fussy eating. Just ensure the meat broth you use is a healthy option without a high salt content or artificial flavorings or additives. Increase portion size Assuming you are already using a high-quality kibble and your GSD is getting on well with it no digestive issues or diarrhea , then it could be a simple matter of increasing the portion size. Be sure to check the back of the bag and work out how many calories you are adding. This is a noticeable difference for a dog, so you should see some changes in weight over weeks. Avoid giving too many treats Although we are trying to add calories and encourage weight gain, treats are not the solution to this. Especially if your GSD is refusing the food anyway. These brands focus on high-quality ingredients that are fresh and close to their natural state. Brands like these also prioritize protein and fat over carbohydrates, which is an instant sign of higher quality. Inferior brands are known to use carbs to bulk out their food while keeping prices cheap. In addition to this, canines, in general, are better adapted to eating a wild diet. Wild diets are high in protein and fat while low on carbs. This results in better digestion and absorption of the food they are eating. Just remember to change foods gradually over the course of days, phasing out the old and incorporating more of the new. This should prevent stomach upset. Additional articles that may help:. Tweet We get a lot of questions from German Shepherd owners about how to keep weight on their pups. Chronically skinny, underweight Shepherds can be heartbreaking for an owner who is desperate to put weight on them. What do I do? Schnauzers can have this problem too. So what is it? Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or EPI is a condition in which the pancreas is not able to produce adequate enzymes to digest and absorb food properly. To determine if this is the case with your shepherd, make an appointment with your veterinarian and request some blood testing. Shepherds are also susceptible to pancreatitis so it's important that you think preventatively! So what can you do if your shepherd has EPI? Your first line of defense as a pet owner is choosing the type of food and supplements you put into your shepherd. Try the following: Provide as many dietary enzymes as possible. Our recommendation is by feeding a raw diet. Raw meat, bones, organs, and juiced veggies combined will contain all the necessary enzymes for better digestive function. By relieving the pancreas of having to produce additional enzymes you can prevent pancreatic inflammation Pancreatitis. Shepherds that are fed only processed or cooked diets are often missing these vital nutrients. Suggestion: A rotation of our 3P veggies 1 and 4 is a great way to give natural-source vitamins and minerals as well as metabolic support for a dog suffering from a pancreatic disease. This may be a bit gross for some, but excellent for your pup! Add a good portion of raw, green tripe to the diet. Green tripe, an animal stomach that smells horrible, but it works! If fed raw not canned it contains the highest levels of digestive enzymes available in a natural form. Wild canines eat the stomach of their prey first because of this fact. Your shepherd will benefit too. Us it as a supplement on top of regular food portions. Ensure you are purchasing freshly frozen, grass-fed tripe. Provide a canine-specific digestive enzyme supplement that includes ox bile and a variety of other digestive enzymes. This will also provide some extra digestive support. Start slowly and build up to a full dosage if your shepherd is experiencing regular diarrhea. Keeping the gut flora in good working order will help your dog to absorb as many nutrients as possible. Good bacteria in the gut will also help with enzyme production, so don't leave the good bacteria out! Look for canine-specific, high potency, multi-strain probiotics with a pre-biotic added. Feed a lean, low-fat raw diet. High-fat diets can overwork the pancreas and the liver and are not recommended for shepherds with EPI or other pancreatic dysfunction. High-quality lean protein will help pack on the pounds for shepherds having difficulty gaining weight. Steer clear of lamb, duck, and other naturally high-fat meats. Cook yams or squash to add as low-glycemic carbohydrates. Cooked yams and squash are more nutritious and easier to digest than other forms of carbohydrate, such as rice or oatmeal. Also yams and squash pair better with the digestibility of raw foods. Remove the skin, unless vegetables are organic then you can keep the skins on. Make all dietary changes slowly and add one thing at a time. Your dog is either lacking certain nutrients in their daily diet or just not eating enough each day. You might not be putting enough out for them. German Shepherd owners could be feeding their pets based on the wrong age and sex. Maybe you buy something that was advertised on TV a lot. For other dogs, this method might be okay. For your German Shepherd, however, that cheap food you get might not provide all of the nutrients your companion needs. Your canine buddy indeed wolfs it down as if their life depends on it most of the time. You might be used to feeding them a certain amount because you got them when they were just a juvenile. You might have to do some scientific experimentation by filling their bowl with the different options you have multiple times. The foods your dog barely eats versus the ones they wolf down will help you determine what consumables you should skip buying on your next grocery trip. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration to ensure your German Shepherd has a balanced diet. Details like these are complicated, which is why you should get a recommended food plan from your vet. There may be some advice online, but never choose that over what your veterinarian says. They could play a role in helping them gain weight, however. For a lot of owners, their German Shepherds are more than just companions. They might be show dogs or work on a farm. Putting weight on your pooch is more than merely putting twice the number of food in their bowl. It might be a smaller change, like adding some more edibles to their diet. Either way, keep trying multiple strategies until you find the one that works the best. If not, then start. Keep track of whether this will help them gain the appropriate amount of weight. For those who already feed your German Shepherds twice a day, you should upgrade their food plan to three times a day. Make sure to spread out the meals and that each contains the same amount of consumables. For example, give your German Shepherd 2. If you usually give them one or two treats a day, then give them a couple more. Be sure to spread them out like the meals. You could also make your treats. Other snacks like apple slices and peanut butter can also be great. Try to find something with noticeably more protein and fat. With that in mind, be sure to look out for dog food that has filler ingredients. They can be fine if done right. If done wrong, however, they could result in your German Shepherd gaining too much weight or getting high blood sugar. Make sure only to do this with dry food, as wet food will spoil if left out too long. Monitor how much more or less your German Shepherd is eating their food. Mix in puppy food with their adult chow. Make sure not to feed them only puppy food. If they give you the okay, then start feeding your companion half adult mix and half puppy chow. You can set some goals on how many more pounds you want your German Shepherd to gain. Remember to ask your veterinarian for that information. Be sure to write down the diet plans you use for your dog as well as how effective they were. The main factor you have to pay attention to is the percentage of adult weight your companion has depending on their age. In addition to sex and age are other factors, like the type of German Shepherd you have. Next, jot down all of the methods you plan on using in a list. Be sure to write down how effective each plan was. Share these results with your veterinarian and see what they say. The daily intake could include canine food, doggy treats, home-cooked meals, and more. If your German Shepherd is only months old, then you may not have enough time to transition to a different meal plan before your goals have to change. Visit your veterinarian regularly for updates on diet methods and results. Depending on how much progress they made can determine whether you want to continue that plan for the rest of the month. Write down the results of each weekly method you do and decide which one allows them to gain the appropriate amount of weight. Start small when exercising your German Shepherd. You can take them on a short walk around the neighborhood. As they gain more weight, gradually increase the amount of exercise you give them. A lot of the tips mentioned above can apply to all kinds of dogs who need to gain weight. Like varying dog breeds, however, German Shepherds will need more specific methods since their bodies function a little differently. Below is a YouTube video that goes over a lot of what we talked about in this article: You can look to this video for a quick reminder of some of the ways you can help your German Shepherd gain weight. Their size is perfect as well. They are big enough to be intimating as far as protection goes, and small enough to travel with and meet weight restriction for certain living situations. He was very hyper as a puppy and required a lot of exercise, as all boxers do. As he got older, he calmed down but when I wanted to play or go for a walk, he'd get up for me. They're extremely loyal and are great with kids once they have grown out of their main puppy stage. Even when they're old, they're like big babies. Not a lot of grooming is required other than their nails and face wrinkles along with other normal grooming requirements. I do not recommend getting a boxer if you won't give your companion a lot of attention and if they don't have enough room to run around. He lived 10 years and died of lung cancer. Anyone familiar with the breed will say let them jump, I know how exuberant they are and it's ok? So you must be watchful for this with small children, as they really love kids. Rating: Boxer Breed Review by robert Ward Rating: Boxer Breed Review by Odette Feuerschwenger Yes I have owned 2 boxer and loved both so very much I am ready to commit myself to my pet Please send me information on a female boxer that you have for sale. For the first 2 years she's was very active and very strong willed. She needed exercise daily to held work off all that energy. She's was like a 23rd old child. She's never did bite but she's most definitely had a presence about her. I never had to worry in my home or when walking her. She's let me know if there was anyone around. I miss her greatly and I'm alone now and am looking again for another female. Such a beautiful breed and I will love to adopt one someday! Love the breed. On a farm and lost one last fall at twelve. He has healthy and active his whole life. His sister is 13 and active and healthy but losing sight slowly. Would love to have a pupp around her. She mothers every animal. They are children to me, not, dogs. They have the best dispositition than any of the bigger breeds. Rating: Boxer Breed Review by Suzanne I have a female boxer that is all that and a bag of chips, I had a male for only a short time, I would like a boxer puppy and a rott pup, I love both breeds, and understand the breeds. Goodwin Jr. She was so sweet and gentle and great with my daycare children. Rating: Boxer Breed Review by scott wickwire ive had two boxers i just had to put my last one down to rest last sat, he had cancer throughout his body really bad and i cannot stand to see animals in pain at all and i did not him suffering any longer, but yes would give the breed a 5 star rating , they are most definetly very smart loves children very family oriented dog loves attention Rating: Boxer Breed Review by Patricia Persello Love my boxer. He is 8 years old. Never has shown aggression. He learns fast. He stays within 50 feet of me. He's not had to be leased for 7 years. Never leaves the yard. Loves all other animals. He died suddenly of a heart attack at our feet while sleeping. He was our 3rd boxer and I wouldn't get another breed for all the money in the world. They were great with our two boys growing up and now great with our grandchiidren. Our other boxers lived to be between 11 and 12 and even though their life expectancy is not as long as smaller dogs this breed gives you so much love and big wet kisses I cant describe the joy. The only issue is that they are so loveable but so big they love to jump up on people and this is something that you need to teach them as puppies. I cant wait to go on Saturday to pick up our fourth boxer. I feel guilty getting one so soon after Baxter just passed on Saturday suddenly but our hearts have been ripped apart and I am sure that little Buck will help us heal faster. Goofy, personable, people pleaser so very easy to train as long as you establish dominance, awesome with kids and all kinds of animals. He is VERY energetic but loves his naps. He does require quite a bit of patience, especially in the beginning. He is completely harmless. Even though he is not exactly a small breed, he is convinced he is a lap dog. I never have to worry about guests or kids coming over or even coming up to him while on a walk. He loves all people, dogs as well. He doesn't do too well with separation. He can get bored easily, and with all of that energy make sure you take your boxers for walks and supply him with plenty of toys because he can get a bit destructive in the house if he isn't entertained enough. Although in the beginning it was a little tough, he is obedient and well trained now. I would recommend this breed to anyone with a little patience, and a lot of love to give. I am a certified occupational therapy assistant. My 12 year old son and I would love to have a boxer to train. Rating: Boxer Breed Review by Sha Rating: Boxer Breed Review by Elaine Ficociello My first memory is coming home from the breeders in the backseat of my parents' car with my boxer pup, Bonnie on my lap with her ears and tail bandaged from being cropped. I was a little over 3 and she was a tad over 8 weeks old. The stories of her gentleness and bravery are too many to share here, but when we moved to Calif. They bonded instantly and were inseparable until her death of old age years later. My brother who was born after we gave her to my Uncle so he never knew her was so moved by the family stories of Bonnie that he has had 6 boxers - the first named Bonnie of course. His children have grown up with these great, fun, friendly and loyal dogs their whole lives. I guess we are a dedicated boxer family because we have experienced and observed the greatness of the breed for years and can say from experience that they are close to the perfect dog. The best dog I ever owned, easy to train they're very intelligent , fiercely protective and excellent with children. He was a lover. Just make sure it's from good stock. Inbreeding ruins the pedigree chain. He was the best dog I've ever had. Passed miss him every day! Loyal , playful and , very protective of their humans. Great dogs around kids. Also one of the smartest breeds around. Just looking to see if there was any breeders around Roanoke, Va. Eismont Have a boxer named Destiny. She is my baby. Loves to be cuddled but also likes play time. You really have to watch for over breeding and such because Heath problems will arise. Hickson Love the brindle boxer looking for male had a female miss her dearly. Frank 13 S. Main St Boxers are very loving and easy to train. They liked to play and take walks. They want to be where you are at all times. And where are you located? They are the most fun, loving, protective, caring, well-trained, family oriented, great with kids, and a true companion. I wouldn't picture a different breed for my family. I recently had to unexpectedly put my 7 yr old boxer, Gunner, down last month due to finding out he was in the chronic stages of cancer. One look at him and I was already attached. Boxers have a very human-like personality and are smarter than some people I know, not to mention the unconditional love they have for family. They are hands down the best breed of all. They are smart, goofy, playful, impish, loyal, affectionate, great with kids I have young kids and the dogs adored them and great watch dogs. What I love most about them is they stay puppy-like for a very long time. But they are stubborn and they do like to jump, they require good training, a lot of exercise and attention. For a first-time buyer they might not be the best fit. I have had 3 Boxers and two of them did have cancer. Boxers are prone to cancer. But I did put them both through radiation and they both lived another 5 years cancer free! Even though they are prone to health issues and their longevity isn't what us Boxer lovers would want, their personality makes it all worth while and I wouldn't get any other breed! He is the most amazing dog, such a great personality and so lovable. Tyson truly brings joy to everyone he meets. Boxers are awesome and charasmatic dogs and I would reccomend anyone to purchase or adopt one if you want a little light in your life. I also had one dog bred twice in her life and another champion line boxer bred once. Love the breed and everything about them. Great with Children, Perfect for adults and normally great with other animals! Easy to train and will be a lifetime best friend! What more can you ask for!? We got our 1st boxer off Greenfeild Puppies 6yrs ago and put her down due to Cancer and just got a 2nd Boxer off Greenfeild Puppies 3weeks ago and both hands down are the best dogs we ever had and we have had many different breeds over the years! So with that said.Rating: Boxer Breed Review by stephanie Boxers are wonderful dogs and great with kids! I have had boxers for the last 15 yrs. Looking to get another one. It's the first dog that I've owned and I am so glad that I went with a boxer. He is like a family member and I could not be happier with him. I don't think that I will ever own any dog other than a boxer in the future. They enjoy being around people and other pets. Great around children and other dogs; pulls a bit on leash when encountering squirrels very strong ; loves to give very wet kisses; seldom has any "dog" odor. Brush their coats, bathe them once a month, and brush their teeth. Can't go wrong with this breed. After 4 years I knew I had to have another boxer to make my life complete. Rating: Boxer Breed Review by Debra Latella I have had various breeds of dogs my whole life, but I cannot imagine my life without a boxer. This is my second boxer and the first one I got from Greenfield Puppies. She was, by far, the best dog I have ever had as part of my life. I miss her every day and am grateful to have found her. This breed is strong, clowns, loyal, and obedient with the proper training. This breed does need to be trained, as with any dog, but because of their size and strength, you need to be in control. That said, they also love everyone, especially children. Great family dog. Very lovable, loyal, and great with kids and other animals. I have one that is a year old. His name is Dozer. We bought Dozer from a breeder listed on the greenfieldpuppies website. He has a great bloodline and has been very healthy. I plan to get another one soon. The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Bang Away, a Boxer, won at Westminster during these years and became a national celebrity, which thrust the Boxer breed into the spotlight. They have consistently ranked in the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the United States ever since and is also one of the popular show dog breeds. The Boxer is a Versatile Working Dog The Boxer may be a popular family companion, but they are also a popular working dog. Their athleticism, eager personality, and trainability make them a good fit for a variety of jobs and they can be found working in several different capacities. In addition to competing in dog sports, Boxers also make great service dogs. Their personalities make them a good fit for being therapy dogs or emotional support dogs as well. These dogs can also be found working as search and rescue dogs, serving as military dogs, and also working in law enforcement as police dogs. They Make Great Family Dogs Boxers are playful and friendly dogs that tend to have a happy, upbeat disposition. They tend to bond closely with their families and love nothing more than spending time with them, especially if they can be active too. Even with all of their energy, Boxers are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Boxers are bouncy and energetic, so they can get overexcited at times. But, they tend to get along fantastically with children and other dogs. After all, they love having someone to play with. Despite their high prey drive, they also tend to get along with other smaller pets in the household, but they may need a little bit of extra socialization with them. Jumping up may be cute when they are small, but it can easily become a nuisance behavior and one that can potentially hurt people when they are a large, powerful dog. Thankfully, Boxers are highly trainable dogs that are a good fit for owners of any experience level as long as they can handle a high-energy dog. In addition to being intelligent, they are also eager to please, which means they pick up on things easily. It also means they get bored easily. This, plus their high energy, can make puppy training classes a good idea. In addition to daily walks, they also need playtime, time to run, and a job to do to be happy and healthy. Because of their high prey drive, they do have a tendency to chase, so they should only be let off-leash in a secured area. Since Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, you can also change things up and try new activities with them. Who knows? These are just a few facts about Boxers. The Boxer can be a great fit for active owners or families that can give them the exercise, mental stimulation, and attention they need to be happy and healthy. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. It was important to me that I was dealing with a reputable breeder so I had been searching for months. Finding Craig was a blessing! I was very pleased to see how he treated his pups like family. I could tell he was checking me out to see what kind of parent I would be as much as I was assessing the situation around me. I could not have been happier with the results. My husband and I ended up with a beautiful red teacup poodle that we named Little Lily, after his mom! She is healthy and her temperament is so sweet. Craig has always welcomed questions and has offered his assistance even years after we adopted our pup. We have been considering an addition to our family and I will not go to any other breeder except for Craig! I recommend him to everyone that asks me about our Teacup Poodle. I was lucky to find such a wonderful Pap and such a good breeder! We bought our male Teacup Poodle two years ago and he was potty trained and crate trained. He has been our shining light since day one and Craig and I have stayed in touched some. He is beautiful, totally healthy and a wonderful dog. We have had many dogs over the years, but never one like this. He is TOO smart and trains very easily. Craig and his team are completely trustworthy and he will give you many tips. Craig is filled with ideas, is very knowledgeable and you can trust him. He will not tell you lies just to sell you one of his puppies. In fact , he is rather careful about who he sells to and has even turned people away that he thought would not be good parents to his babies. What a dream dog we got from him. I had recently lost my beloved pet of 7 years ago and I was very upset until a friend mentioned that maybe I needed to replace my broken heart with an open one for a new beloved pet. He was wonderful to work with and the result is that I have my Mark and he is soooooo loved and spoiled. He was the easiest puppy I ever had to house train and teach tricks to. He is full of fun and play, not to mention that unconditional love he has. He gets along great with other dogs, since I am a grandmother of four other dogs they all play together and on occasion they sleep over. Mark has proven my husband wrong, who claims he was not a BIG dog lover. They have their own playtime everyday and my husband treats him as one of the children. What a life!!!! Again, I cannot say enough good about Craig. If you are in search of a good pet then she is the one you need to see. corgi pug mix puppies for sale - Tricolor, brindle, fawn, sesame, white Suitable for: Temperament: Protective, aloof, affectionate, adventurous A Boxer is a brachycephalic large dog with protective yet goofy temperaments. When you combine the two, you can get a myriad of different physical and temperamental possibilities. It is important to stress that both breeds are very different and can create various outcomes in a single litter. Getting to know both of the parent breeds will help you decipher what you can expect. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. These dogs are not regulated, meaning that most litters are likely accidental. If the litter is intentional, and the breeder continues to breed these two pups together, you might be dealing with a backyard breeder. Backyard breeders breed dogs together without acknowledging the welfare of the parents or puppies. They aim to turn out as many puppies as possible for the most financial gain. They might also not offer necessary vetting or make you put down a deposit or sign any contract. Many seem very eager just to get rid of the pups. We highly recommend that you use your own judgment. In this case, they are probably looking for the most suitable owners possible to take the puppies off their hands. Both the Boxer and Akita are similarly priced when they are purebred. The ultimate cost would depend on the quality, particular breeder rates, and the area you live. However, a Boxita should be significantly less expensive, especially if it came from an accidental litter. You might also find the Boxer Akita mix in a rescue or shelter nearby. Often, these dogs are fully grown, though sometimes you can get juveniles and puppies. To adopt a dog, you likely have to go through an application process and extensive steps to see if both the Boxita and your family are compatible. If you get a pup from a rescue or shelter, all vet costs, including a span neuter, are included in the total adoption fee.
