Thankfully, people just love sharing pictures of these tiny cute puppies, and here are 14 of the best: 1. Golden Retrievers are born with an adventurous spirit. Playtime usually ends like this. How can anyone say 'No' to those puppy eyes? Cats and dogs don't quite seem to share the same sense of humor. He falls asleep smiling, and wakes up smiling too! She is 8 weeks old and a sweetheart. How could that face ever exhaust anyone? They are so sweet in personality and have a great reputation for being the best family dog. But how can you not love their beautiful color and how soft they are? We knew we wanted a female and a lighter Golden that was on the bigger end. He is a 95 lb dog if I remember right. Her mom has the most beautiful, soft coat and is a 75 lb dog. But he is totally involved with feeding her and walking her. Pascaline on the other hand has finally met her match. This puppy is as high energy as she is. But even she is experiencing a little sleep deprivation along with the rest of us from this baby. The only member of the family who is dead against having a puppy is…Prince Phillip who is bigger than the Rosie. You can feel the bitterness stew. Then he throws up at random in different parts of the house—which he has never done before. This is great, just great. But I can somewhat feel for him. Yesterday I found him sitting by his empty food dish after lunch. The kids had forgotten to feed him that morning, the dog had already had breakfast and lunch. When Rosie comes near him he freaks out. This whole experience reminds me of having a new baby, and I swore I would NEVER be one of those people to compare my pets to our kids! I get it now! Rosie wakes us up in the middle of the night, needs constant supervision, needs potty training, is super high energy, annoys the heck out of the cat, then without warning…Rosie collapses and the whole family takes a deep breath. Okay, so where did we get the name Rosie? When we were thinking of getting a dog, we started brainstorming names together. Was this name meant to be or what! But seriously, we are all a bit frazzled and wondering if we are cut out for this. Do all new puppy owners feel this way or is this a sign of us not being able to endure to the end? How long before they are potty trained? Then we come in the house and she goes in the house. Am I doing something wrong or missing something here? And what can we do to help Prince Phillip release his bitterness? The woman we bought Rosie from has been the best trooper. Please Share:. Vocality level 3 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament The American Bulldog is an agile, confident and loyal protector for his human family, as well as of personal property. He is a gentle, affectionate and loving companion, albeit fearless and ready to strike should any intruder cross his path. An energetic, active working dog, the American Bulldog exudes a dominant, powerful and athletic appearance, with strong muscles and substantial boning. He gets along well with young children, as well as dogs and other pets so long as he was raised with them from the start. The American Bulldog does not do well when left alone for prolonged periods of time. With proper socialization, training and regular exercise, the American Bulldog is a true companion and excellent watchdog. Upkeep Because of his working past, the American Bulldog is quite familiar with being outdoors, but like most dogs, he thrives on living indoors with his owner. As such, he should be frequently exercised with plenty of engaging activity to burn off energy and combat boredom, avoiding consequential destructive behavior. Otherwise, the American Bulldog is a relatively low-maintenance breed, requiring not much else than mopping up his regular drool and slobber and minimal grooming for his short, fine coat. Known for his strength, courage and ease around livestock, the breed began being used for bull baiting before it was outlawed in England. Consequently following the ban, the breed was replaced with the less athletic, shorter and stockier English Bulldog. Meanwhile, the original bulldog type was preserved by working class immigrants, who brought them on their journey to America to use as all-around working dogs on farms and ranches in the South. Johnson worked to revive the breed alongside Alan Scott and other breeders. Today, the modern American Bulldog as we know it remains a well-rounded working dog, courageous guard dog and faithful family companion. Related Content. Click here for more information on this characteristic American Bulldog Overview American Bulldogs are generally happy, family-loving dogs that do well in homes where they have plenty of space to roam. A big, fenced-in backyard is practically a must-have for one of these energetic dogs, though exercise needs may vary by specific type and breeding. They may be just fine with urban life, so long as they get plenty of walks, and they can even make good jogging or running buddies. They do not, however, take very well to being left alone for long periods of time, and they can feel cooped up in an apartment. American Bulldogs need experienced owners who can be patient with training and start socialization early. Whether they are used for hunting and farm work or just cuddling up with their humans, the American Bulldog makes for an excellent, loyal companion and a competent watchdog. Lifespan: The average lifespan of an American Bulldog is around 10 to 15 years, depending on genetics, diet, and overall care. Family Compatibility: American Bulldogs can make excellent family pets when raised in a loving and consistent environment. They are known for their patience with children and are protective of their human family members. Guardian Instinct: Due to their protective nature, American Bulldogs can be good guard dogs. They are naturally watchful and alert, which makes them capable of providing security. These two lines may have slight differences in appearance and temperament. Always check local laws and regulations before acquiring one of these dogs. American Bulldog History The ancestor of the American Bulldog is the Old English Bulldog, which was brought to North America by working class immigrants who wanted to keep their working dogs to help on the farms. Rather than being concerned with maintaining breed purity or certain genetic traits, early farmers bred the dogs with the best working qualities for all-around farm work. Wild pigs were an invasive species not native to the American south that had no natural predators, and the strong jaws and muscular build of the American Bulldog was perfect for hunting them down. They were originally used in the barbaric sport of bull baiting. By the end of World War II, the American Bulldog was almost extinct until a few breeders scoured the south for specimens to revive the breed. Today, the American Bulldog is in no danger of extinction and is mostly a family-friendly companion. Adorable American Bulldog puppies will grow to 20 to 28 inches in height and 60 to pounds by the time they reach adulthood. Although these sizes are considered to be standard for the breed, American Bulldogs can be quite a bit larger or smaller. American Bulldog Personality American Bulldogs are friendly, intelligent, and affectionate , though that affectionate nature often leads them to be territorial and overly suspicious of strangers. This makes them lovely family dogs and watchdogs, even for families with children, but they will need socialization training, especially as puppies to get along with unfamiliar humans or other dogs that stop by for a visit. Luckily, their intelligence makes them highly adaptable and trainable. The American Bulldog is a playful breed that has some high exercise needs, and they do well in families that are able to stay active with lots of walks and play time. They can develop in American Bulldogs and may require surgical removal for treatment. It can lead to itching, hair loss, and skin irritation. Treatment typically involves medicated baths and sometimes oral medications. This can lead to weight gain, lethargy, skin issues, and other health problems. It is usually managed with lifelong medication. It can lead to lameness and discomfort, and severe cases may require surgical intervention. Elbow Dysplasia : Elbow dysplasia is another developmental disorder affecting the elbows. It can cause pain, lameness, and arthritis in the affected limb. Treatment may involve medication, weight management, and in some cases, surgery to correct the condition. American Bulldog Care Most of the care that is necessary for the health of an American Bulldog is meeting their needs for exercise and mental stimulation. Failing to do so can result in anxiety, boredom, and destructive behavior. So long as those needs are met, the rest is fairly standard. Maintain normal vet visits, check their ears weekly, keep up with monthly nail clipping and normal dental care. One of the issues you may face is the potential for drooling that is common among bully breeds. You should take care to wipe your dog as needed unless you want a generous amount of slobber all over your home. American Bulldog Feeding An American Bulldog diet should be formulated for a large to giant breed, and their high energy level should be taken into consideration. Their needs will change from puppyhood to adulthood. You should discuss with them how to form an appropriate diet for your dog. Traditionally they are white with patches of brindle, red, or black, but there are quite a few more color variations to the breed in modern times. They may have patterns that include shades of black, red, brindle, brown, or fawn. American Bulldogs usually have black on the nose and the rims of the eyes, but they may also have shades of pink. Their eye color is usually brown. Although these are breed standards, some American Bulldogs have been known to be merle or have coats that contain shades of blue. Weekly brushing should keep it under control with baths as needed. So long as they are trained properly, American Bulldogs are great with children and are very loyal to all members of the family. It is also important to train children on how to properly handle and treat animals to avoid incident. American Bulldogs are large animals, and overly energetic play can cause injuries. The same can be said for interactions with other pets. So long as American Bulldogs are socialized and trained, they usually get along with other dogs just fine. Play should be supervised, especially with smaller dogs that can easily get hurt when playing with a large, muscular American Bulldog. You can also check local shelters near you, or you can use our adoption page that lets you search by breed and zip code for adoptable dogs. American Bulldog Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues. More Info For You. Dependence 1. American Bulldog Lifespan This is a breed that you will spend many years with and form a strong bond with. Typically speaking, they are known for their physical strength and great health which contributes to a lengthy life. When fed a proper diet, exercised on a regular basis, and given the care and affection they need, these fur babies usually live between years and some live even longer than that. Ambulls are full or energy which has part to do with why they are considered an athletic dog breed. Helping your furry friend release their energy is crucial when it comes to maintaining proper behavior. To be perfectly clear, this is not a breed that does well with simply being kept in a back yard. Daily exercise as well and mental stimulation is an absolute must. The happiest Ambulls are those that participate in regular playtime with their humans. They also like to switch up activities rather than doing the same thing over and over again. Being such a high energy breed, these fur babies can be challenging for some people, especially those that are often away from the house. However, the challenge is more than worth the effort as long as you are willing to put in the work. Types Of American Bulldogs You might be surprised to learn that there are actually several different types of Ambulls. While each is quite similar to the others, they do have their own distinct differences. Their bodies are muscular and broad and they also have very short muzzles. Contrary to other types of dogs from this breed, the Johnson has very low energy levels and will need encouragement to get the exercise they need. For this reason, Johnsons can easily become overweight. However, they are extremely loving and enjoy pleasing their humans. They are also protective when needed, but friendly the majority of the time. Painter Margentina This is another well built and strong dog from the Bully line. Unfortunately, these Ambulls come from a dark past. They were bred solely for fighting. Even though this is no fault of their own, their past has led to some aggressive behaviors. The good news is that they are intelligent and trainable so these behaviors can often be curved. However, a Painter would likely not make a good fit for a first-time owner or someone with small children in the house. However, unlike the Johnson, these fur babies are incredibly active and require regular exercise as well as mental stimulation. Their appearance is also slightly different from most dogs in this breed line due to their long legs, muzzle shape, and lean stature. As their name suggests, they are typically found in the south. However, they have been expanding across the rest of the country. They make amazing companions and have an excellent temperament. Their energy level is often somewhere between the Johnson and the Scott. Ambulls are a breed that require a fair amount of exercise. In order to keep your furry friend healthy, they should participate in hours of physical activity per day. While two daily walks for about minutes are a great place to start, additional exercise will be needed in most cases. The good news is that exercise can be fun for both of you. Try activities such as fetch, tug of war, or frisbee. American Bulldog Temperament Temperament and personality are important things to keep in mind before adopting an American Bulldog. The good news is that Ambulls have an incredible temperament. This breed tends to be loyal, affectionate, and gentle. They make amazing family dogs and are incredibly good with children. However, this also contributes to their ability to make excellent guard dogs. Training from a young age is quite beneficial with this breed. While they are eager to please their humans, establishing yourself as the pack leader as soon as possible is crucial. Are They Easy To Train? Truthfully speaking, training an American Bulldog can be a daunting task, especially for a novice trainer. This breed loves to please their humans, buy they also have a muscular build and a strong personality that tends to lead to them wanting to have things their way. The most important thing when training an Ambull is to use reward based training rather than discipline based. Reward based training will make the experience more enjoyable for both your fur baby and you. Here are the best steps you can take when training an your fur baby. Socialize with other animals and people from a young age. Let your fur baby set the pace with their socialization. Begin obedience training as soon as possible. Use both hand and voice commands. Stay patient throughout the process. Impatience will only delay training. Remain consistent to avoid taking steps backward. Never use physical punishment against your dog. Be firm with your commands without being harsh. Use rewards to reinforce positive behaviors. Establish trust as well as a bond with your furry friend. Typically speaking, an Ambull can weigh anywhere between pounds. They often stand between inches high. However, keep in mind that these sizes and weights are simply the breed standards. Ambulls can easily be much larger or even smaller at times. Are They Good Guard Dogs? Due to their protective nature, large build, and high levels or bravery, this breed does make an excellent guard dog. They are quick to intervene if they sense their loved ones are in trouble and will put themselves in the line of danger without hesitation. One thing to keep in mind is that their protectiveness can lead to excessive barking at times, but this behavior can usually easily be corrected with training. American Bulldog Health Issues While Ambulls typically live long and healthy lives, they do have health concerns to watch out for. The most worrying is the chance of bone cancer. However, the risk is relatively low in most cases. The most common issue to watch out for is obesity which is why these fur babies should never be allowed to free feed and should receive regular exercise. Other health concerns to watch out for include: 1. Hip Dysplasia. Should you get a young puppy, an older puppy, or an adult dog? Where can you buy or adopt an American Bulldog? American Bulldogs are a pretty common breed in the United States. They're not difficult to find. American Bulldogs might be turned over to Rescue because they need too exercise, or because they're too rambunctious or destructive. There might be dominance issues, or aggression toward other animals. Owners often give up their American Bulldog when it becomes apparent that the dog is too much for them to handle. You would need to provide these dogs with the exercise, training, and socialization that they are lacking. Other American Bulldogs are given up simply because of changed family circumstances, and these dogs may have no behavior problems at all. Adopting From Public Animal Shelters and Humane Societies American Bulldogs are occasionally found here, but American Bulldog Rescue groups keep their eyes peeled on shelters and humane societies across the country. When an American Bulldog turns up at a shelter, the rescue group typically moves in quickly to take the dog. Buying From a Dog Breeder You can buy an American Bulldog from a show breeder, who breeds American Bulldogs to match a detailed standard of appearance for the dog show ring. Or you can buy an American Bulldog from a performance breeder, who emphasizes an energetic temperament and strong "prey chasing drives" for hunting wild boar, or for participating in protection dog sports schutzhund or weight pulling competitions. You can also buy an American Bulldog from people who "just breed pets" or "just had one litter. Be sure to read the article to learn more about these people. You might choose to accept that risk. But then you need to be willing and able to pay a couple thousand bucks for future surgeries and lifelong meds if your American Bulldog ends up with hip and elbow dysplasia. American Bulldogs are not seen very often in pet shops, but it's possible. I have plenty to say about buying a puppy from a pet shop! Which puppy?
Photo from: milocanoodle Designer dogs — also known as hybrid dogs or just mixed breed dogs — are crossbreeds of two purebred parents. While crossbreeding is becoming more and more popular, some people are strictly against it. Many oppose the idea of combining two dog breeds for the sake of creating a new dog just to fit the needs of humans. Also, the biggest issue with crossbreeds is that there is no certain way to predict how the offspring will look. This is because you mix two sets of very different genes, allowing for a huge number of combinations and possibilities. Even in one litter, you can find puppies that will look nothing alike. In the case of the Cane Corso Poodle mix, some pups will look like their Cane Corso parent, some will look like Poodles, while others will be a mix of traits of both breeds. However, there are many good things about crossbreeding that no one can deny. Most notably, this is the health benefit that mixed breed dogs have over purebred canines. To maintain the appearance and temperament of a purebred dog, many dog breeders opt to inbreed. Two animals that are cousins are allowed to mate to keep the bloodlines pure. As you may already know, this leads to a large number of health problems or defects. When you add new genes to the gene pool, nature chooses to pick the healthiest genes and give them to the offspring. This is because many genetic conditions are carried by recessive genes, meaning that a dog has to inherit them from both parents. Hybrid vigor allows crossbreeds to have a smaller chance of inheriting these bad genes, allowing a healthy litter of puppies. Also, crossbreeding is usually done to prevent some bad features of a dog breed by mixing the breed with a dog that has opposite traits. For example, if an aggressive dog is bred with a mellow canine, chances are the puppy will be something in between. The same goes for physical traits. Not much is known about these fantastic dogs. Cane Corso History The Cane Corso belongs to molossus dogs — also known as molossers — a special kind of working dogs originating from giant guard dogs that the ancient Greeks bred. All dogs of the molossus type belong to the Mastiff-type of dogs. Roman people brought these giant dogs to Italy, where they mixed them with native Italian breeds, creating the ancestors of both the Cane Corso and Neapolitan Mastiff. These were huge war dogs used to charge enemy lines with buckets of flaming oil tied to their backs. It is believed that these dogs were even larger than the Cane Corsos we have today, as they had to look as scary as possible and be very strong. As the Roman Empire fell, Cane Corsos were used for boar hunting, livestock driving, farming, and guarding henhouses and farmsteads. While the breed became nearly extinct by the 20th century, a group of Italian breeders decided to revive it in the s. Poodle History While Poodles are associated with France a country in which they are known as the Caniche , they actually originated in Germany, where they were used as duck hunters. Their name is derived from the word pudelin, which is the term used for splashing in the water. Believe it or not, but Poodles were actually used as water retrievers! Their curly coat served as great water protection, and their intelligence made them easy to train. As the Miniature Poodles were bred, royals took to this breed and brought it to the courts. Also, because of their flamboyant appearance and high intelligence, they were used in circuses for entertainment. Some dogs look just like one of their parents, while others are a near-perfect mix of the two. Still, while observing the small amount of Cane Corso Poodle mixes out there, we can notice that most of these pups are large dogs with wavy, medium-length coats. As both parent breeds can come in many coat colors, the same can be said for its offspring that can come in a variety of shades — although it seems like pure black is the most sought-after. Cane Corso Appearance Cane Corsos are large, intimidating dogs that stand around 28 inches tall but some can be as tall as 30! These dogs are muscular, with a broad chest, a wide skull, as well as a wrinkly forehead. Many Cane Corsos in the US have cropped ears, although this is a controversial practice banned in some areas and most European countries. This is why Cane Corsos with floppy ears are becoming more popular on the streets. They have a short, coarse, double-layered coat that is allowed to come in black, red, blue, fawn, and brindle colors. Some Cane Corso owners compare their coat type to that of a cow! They have almond eyes that can vary in color. While many Corsos have dark brown eyes, they can come in amber, yellow, and even blue! As even the largest Poodle is still significantly smaller than the Cane Corso, there is no need to mix smaller Poodle types with this giant breed. Poodles have a straight back and a long, elegant neck. Their legs are noticeably long even with all that fur, and their ears are medium-length and dropped. A Poodle is most known for its glorious coat. If left intact, their coats will be medium to long and curly, giving them an adorable teddy bear appearance. However, many Poodle owners give their dogs a significant cut that can be seen in many cartoons and movies where Poodles are shown as spoiled pets of rich owners. There are many Poodle colors , and all are allowed by the AKC. Overall, you can expect a Cane Corso Poodle mix to be a large dog, although not as giant as its Cane Corso parent, making it a bit more comfortable to live inside houses or even larger apartments. However, their desire to please their owners also makes them very obedient. While Cane Corsos are a bit stoic, Poodles are outgoing and playful, so these dogs tend to be friendly yet proud, making them some of the more elegant-behaving dogs around. Cane Corso Temperament Cane Corsos are dogs that are ready to face any challenge they might face. This is both a good and bad thing, depending on how you behave around them. They have an aggressive streak, so they need a responsible owner who will give them plenty of socialization early on. Fortunately, they are affectionate dogs that can do great with children if trained properly and on time. You need to show them who the pack leader is in time; otherwise, they can become quite stubborn. As they were bred to be guard dogs, they can be wary of strangers, which is another reason why you want to socialize them in time. Are Cane Corsos Aggressive? Is there truth to these rumors? Unfortunately, there are many reported cases of Cane Corso bites. These dogs can be aggressive towards both humans and animals alike. Just like German Shepherds or even Border Collies , these dogs were bred to be watchdogs. Why is that? People seem to forget that Cane Corsos were initially war dogs. Unfortunately, some Cane Corsos were also used in fighting rings due to their large size and strength. All of this helped develop an aggressive streak in these dogs. Cane Corsos can make amazing family dogs if you know how to train them properly. They are affectionate and loyal, and some might even behave as giant lap dogs! However, they are not for novice owners or people afraid of big dogs. Poodle Temperament Poodles are friendly, intelligent dogs that love to have fun. They are active and ready to be the clown of the house! They love attention so much they can easily develop some bad behaviors, such as constant barking. Smaller Poodles can be a bit aggressive to other pets, especially dogs of the same gender. Despite their looks, Poodles can be protective of their owners, and they make great guard dogs. In the end, they were bred to be hunting dogs, and this can be seen if they feel like their owner is in danger. Both the Poodle and Cane Corso are highly intelligent dogs. In theory, this means that they are effortless to train. However, they can be a bit stubborn, especially Cane Corsos, which can make the process a bit more difficult. Proper training and socialization, while easy, have to be repeated daily, as you cannot let these canines fall off track. Be firm and strict, but also somewhat gentle, as Canoodles can be sensitive dogs. Use lots of positive reinforcement, as these pups can be food-driven. Your Cane Corso Poodle mix will require lots of walks and exercise, as this is an active dog with high energy levels. Due to their intelligence, these dogs can get bored very easily, and boredom leads to destructive behavior. Also, give him enough dog toys to occupy him for the better part of the day. Interactive toys with treats are a good idea, as they will make your dog think in order to get that yummy bite he desires. Poodles are a non-shedding breed, while Cane Corsos experience mild to small amounts of shedding. However, curly Poodles require daily brushing to keep mats and tangles from forming. Most Canoodles have a medium-length coat that is wavy. Occasional visits to a professional groomer are advised for those dogs that have inherited a longer coat. Just like with all other dogs, the Cane Corso Poodle mix needs to have his nails trimmed whenever they grow long enough to curl. Look for any odors or signs of irritation. While these seem harmless, gum and teeth problems can be very dangerous for your dog. Poodles are considered to be the best dogs for people who sneeze or wheeze after they come in contact with canines. This is why many dog breeders add their genes to their bloodlines, hoping they will create a hypoallergenic dog. Most people reported having issues with dog hair. Poodles are considered non-shedding dogs. Theoretically, this combination makes Canoodles great dogs for allergy sufferers. However, there is a catch. What Does Hypoallergenic Mean? If you have an issue with allergies of any kind, you are probably familiar with the term hypoallergenic. This word seems to be plastered on all sorts of items, usually foods, soaps, shampoos, clothing materials, even family pets. But what does hypoallergenic really mean? However, this gets a bit tricky with dogs. Dander consists of tiny specks of dead skin. Dander sticks to objects like hair. When a dog sheds, the dander is spread around together with the loose hair. In fact, Cane Corsos are prone to drooling due to the droopy shape of their muzzles. This cannot possibly be good for a person with dog allergies! Photo from: milocanoodle All dogs secrete urine, saliva, and dander to a certain extent. This means that no dog can be considered truly hypoallergenic. However, the Cane Corso Poodle mix could be a good choice for all but the most extreme allergy sufferers. Even if your Canoodle gives you allergies, there are still things you can do that might help you enjoy the time you spend together. While sharing a bed with your dog is tempting, this is the worst possible thing for an allergy sufferer! Make sure your dog cannot enter your bedroom by placing a baby fence or simply teaching him to stay out of it at all times. You might also want to visit your doctor, who can prescribe some antihistamines. Also, before you buy a Cane Corso Poodle mix, try spending some time with this dog breed. Of course, this can vary. If you do have a problem with Canoodles, you might want to consider some other purebred hypoallergenic dog, as they are a more certain option. Cane Corso Cane Corsos , also known as Molossers, are mastiff dogs. Molossers are great guard dogs and people have been using them for centuries to guard and hunt large prey. In fact, Molosser dogs originated from the giant working dog breeds that the Greeks and Romans used to breed for hunting, guarding, and keeping as watchdogs. They truly are an ancient breed! Cane Corso is a hyperactive dog that loves to play and run around. This dog breed is also super intelligent and will easily follow your commands. While these dogs are loyal and affectionate, they can become aggressive if they sense fear from their owners. Therefore, a Cane Corso is likely not the right choice for first-time dog owners. They need a calm and smart owner who knows how to properly train them and keep them well-mannered. Cane Corsos also needs proper socialization to prevent violent behavior with other dogs and strangers. These dogs need regular exercise to divert their energies in the right direction and avoid destructive behavior. Poodles History Standard Poodle Regarded as one of the most intelligent dogs eve, Poodles are known as being smart, energetic, and loyal. Back in the day, Poodles were popular as working dogs, and people bred them as duck hunters. Standard Poodles are pretty big in size and are the national dog of France, but originated in Germany. Poodles have thick curly coats, which is why they are low- to no-shedding. Poodles are extremely friendly and loyal and require lots of attention from their owners. Because they are always eager to please, they are easy to train. Poodles are also great house pets as they are highly intelligent and can make great guard dogs as well. While Poodles are quite outgoing, Cane Corsos are somewhat stoic, and their offspring can take after either parent. They are working dogs, after all, and require guidance and boundaries. With that being said, you must be very experienced with dogs and dog behavior if you want to get a Canoodle. Canoodles require plenty of enrichment and structure. Overall, you can expect a Canoodle to be intelligent and obedient. Energy Cane Corso Poodles are always energetic and eager to play. These are not couch-potato dogs and training is non-negotiable. Regular playtime is essential to divert their energies in the right direction. It will prevent them from becoming aggressive toward you, your family, strangers, and other animals. Intelligence Cane Corso Poodle mix is an intelligent dog and has inherited its intelligence from its parents. These dogs want to follow commands and need a strong leader to give them training and guidance. Plus, they want to train. Training them gives them the outlet they need. We also recommend reaching out to a trainer to see other ways to keep your Canoodle happy! But note that Canoodles may get a bit aggressive due to their protective and territorial instincts, so be careful when introducing them to other family members and animals. Cane Corso Poodle Mix Appearance. Prey Drive Is High in the Poodle Poodles are traditional duck hunters, and they are naturally inclined to chase and kill small prey. There is no guarantee that every Poodle is going to be predisposed to predation, but some will be. Always be mindful of your Poodle around other small animals. And there are not many breeders who specialize in the Canoodle mix. This scarcity, combined with their growing popularity, can make it challenging to find a Canoodle puppy. A highly intelligent canine, a Canoodle is eager to please their owners. Most prove to be highly trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. Owners say that Canoodles are affectionate and loyal dogs. Mixed breed dogs can have varying temperaments depending on the mix of traits from both parent breeds and the individual dog. Canoodles seem to love to play and interact with their owners and other pets. Individual Canoodles may differ in their degree of guarding and dominance—which comes from the Cane Corso. Are These Dogs Good for Families? It can be a lot. They are also highly sociable dogs that love to play and interact with their owners. Their Cane Corso parentage can make them headstrong—if not properly raised and trained. If you have never owned a dog before, most people advise against having a Cane Corso. Likewise, the Canoodle may also not be a great choice of dog for first-time dog owners. Canoodles can have that same tendency to rule the roost. Some Canoodles may have a strong prey drive, inherited from the Poodle, while others may be more aggressive, inherited from the Cane Corso. Early socialization and training can help prevent any behavioral issues from developing and can help ensure that the Canoodle gets along well with other pets. Introducing the Canoodle to other pets, including other dogs and cats, from an early age can help them become more comfortable and confident around them. Regular training and positive reinforcement can also help promote good behavior and prevent any bossy tendencies from developing. This hybrid dog can be loyal and devoted, and its parentage can mean you get the impressive size of the Cane Corso with the low-shedding coat of the Poodle. But, the Cane Corso Poodle mix is not for everyone. While these dogs are devoted and loving towards their human family, they do require an experienced handler with knowledge about large breeds and proper canine training methods. The most important part of any diet plan for a Cane Corso Poodle mix is meeting the nutritional needs of this large-breed dog. Feed your Canoodle a high-quality dry or wet food designed specifically for large breeds. It should contain plenty of protein as well as healthy fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. How much you should feed your Canoodle entirely depends on their size—most are bred to a Standard Poodle, and if this is the case with your bestie, follow the guidelines for a large breed dog. Not only will exercise help keep them physically fit, but it can also have a calming effect on their sometimes-excitable personality. There are plenty of activities that dog owners can enjoy with their Cane Corso Poodle mix including walking, running, playing fetch or frisbee in the park, or even joining in on agility classes if they want something more challenging. Try out different activities and see what your Canoodle responds to. When it comes to Canoodles—training comes with the territory. Training the Cane Corso Poodle mix can be a rewarding experience, but it requires consistency and diligence on your part. Be patient. Be gentle. Training should start as early as possible to ensure success in the long run. It also helps to use positive reinforcement such as treats or toys when they follow commands correctly. Keeping up with brushing, bathing, and nail trims will not only help maintain their appearance but also reduce the likelihood of related health issues. It is important for prospective owners to understand the risks associated with owning a Cane Corso Poodle Mix in order to ensure the best possible care for their pet. Mixed-breed dogs are known for their robustness, but there are still some health issues that can arise within the Canoodle. Some of the most common issues include hip dysplasia, eye problems such as cataracts or glaucoma, hypothyroidism, and skin allergies. Minor Conditions. White, blue, silver, red, brown, gray, and black Suitable for: Active families who are looking for a low-shedding dog. They do well with families with children and get along well with other pets. Temperament: Loyal, Loving, Intelligent Technically, any dog breed can be mixed with any other dog breed, assuming the dogs are close enough in size. However, the Cane Corso Poodle mix is among the stranger mixed breeds. These dogs can inherit any trait from either parent, making them vary. However, this mixed breed is more likely to have certain traits than others. Therefore, there is a little bit we can tell you about them. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. They can be nearly impossible to find. Puppies tend to be very energetic, just as you might expect. As intelligent dogs, they take to training very easily. We recommend starting training as soon as you bring the puppy home. This helps ensure that the puppy learns how to interact properly with the world from an early age. They can inherit any trait from either parent, which already adds a lot of variety to the mix. However, how they are raised also matters a lot. With that said, this breed is known for being loyal, intelligent, and friendly. They may or may not be territorial, depending on the exact traits they inherit. Some will be more territorial than others, but socialization often plays a large role. They require quite a bit of mental stimulation due to their intelligence. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are noted for being devoted to their owners, particularly children, and for forming deep ties with their families. They are incredibly kind and tolerant with kids, which makes them a popular choice for families with children. With that said, this breed is extremely energetic and requires lots of activity. Therefore, they are best for active families that want a dog to be active with. The Canedoodle gets along well with other pets, including other dogs and cats, with proper socialization. They are amiable and social, making them suitable companions for other animals. However, they do require plenty of socialization to make that happen. Exposing your Canedoodle to other pets gradually and under strict supervision is essential, especially in the beginning. This can guarantee an excellent introduction and ensure your Canedoodle learns to interact with other pets safely. Early socialization and training are essential for ensuring your Canedoodle grows into a well-adjusted dog who gets along with other dogs. They can be a bit territorial, so getting them around other dogs from a very early age is vital. Their nutritional needs vary according to age, activity level, and general health. Most Canedoodles require a diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals to promote their growth and development. Because they are so active, they often need more protein and fat than other dogs. Selecting a dog food that is age- and activity-level appropriate and fulfills their particular nutritional demands is critical. These dogs eat a lot, so you should expect to pay a lot for their food. If fed improperly, puppies can develop hip dysplasia, especially in larger variants of this mixed breed. Dogs that grow too quickly are particularly at risk for hip dysplasia, so controlled feedings are required. They have a lot of energy and must exercise for at least 60 minutes daily. You can meet this requirement in many different ways. Many owners choose to take their dogs on walks, but you can also play games or go for a hike. On top of regular walks, you should also keep their mental stimulation needs in mind. They require lots of mental exercise. Otherwise, they can become bored and try to make their own fun, which may be destructive. Some dogs require more exercise than others due to their age or temperament. Think of these as guidelines—not hard rules. It is critical to begin training your Canedoodle at a young age to build excellent behavior and avoid any behavioral issues. Socialization is crucial to training because it helps the dog feel comfortable and well-adjusted around people, other dogs, and new situations. These canines can be territorial, which makes socialization even more important. We highly recommend puppy training classes for these dogs, as they can socialize your canine and provide training tips. These dogs are more than capable of completing basic and advanced training. Many of them love agility and obedience competitions, which provide them with some extra mental stimulation. While training is necessary because it teaches your dog to be good, it also provides the mental stimulation this breed needs to thrive. While this is a positive quality, the dog must be well-socialized and trained to avoid potentially hostile behavior. Either way, brushing will always be required, though those with more poodle-like coats will need it more. Some may only require weekly brushing, while others must be brushed daily. These dogs will need to be bathed occasionally. Use a gentle shampoo and thoroughly rinse your dog to prevent skin problems. Only bathe your dog when you need to. Check their ears regularly and clean them as needed. These dogs are somewhat prone to ear infections, which can be lessened by cleaning their ears. However, they are prone to a few problems, largely due to their bigger size. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: A genetic disease that affects the eyes, causing gradual vision loss and blindness. Bloat: A life-threatening condition that occurs when the stomach twists and traps air, which can cause a rapid onset of symptoms and be fatal if left untreated. Epilepsy: A neurological disorder that can cause seizures and other symptoms. Keeping your dog exercised and on a healthy diet is vital to minimize these health problems. Regular vet checkups and vaccinations are also vital to keep your dog healthy. Minor Conditions. Because a mix can take on any combination of traits from one of both of the parent breeds, you want to make sure you talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. Cane Corsos are large dogs that are loyal, protective, and affectionate towards their families. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can likely expect something similar in a Cane Corso Mix. A Cane Corso is a very family-oriented dog breed. Due to their protective and guardian instincts, they are naturally wary of strangers and tend to be most interested and focused on their families. They tend to be quiet dogs that are loving towards their families and get along well children and other pets that are within the family unit. Because of their protective instincts, proper socialization and training are even more important. The other parent breed could throw some other traits into the mix that can affect temperament, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. You can also meet the mother dog to get an idea of what kind of temperament she is modeling for her puppies. Cane Corsos are moderately adaptable dogs. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Between their size and guardian instincts, they do not tend to be a good fit for apartments and are better suited to larger homes with fenced yards. The other parent breed could add in some traits that would make a Cane Corso Mix more or less adaptable. Talking to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix can help give you an idea of what potential range of adaptability to prepare for in a particular litter of Cane Corso Mix puppies. The reality is that a mix can inherit the health conditions common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. From the Cane Corso side, potential health conditions to be aware of include cherry eye, hip dysplasia, ectropion, and entropion. As a large dog breed, they are also at risk for bloat. Reputable breeders will screen and test their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any relevant health test results or clearances. Although Cane Corsos are intelligent and pick up things quickly, they are also known to be stubborn and independent. They have a tendency to test boundaries and need a confident leader who can train and socialize them consistently. This makes them a better fit for more experienced dog owners. The other parent breed could introduce the chance for a more trainable dog, but it will be a potential range and not a guarantee. So, even if the other parent breed is easy to train, you will still want to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat similar to one parent breed or one that is a combination of both of them. Should a Cane Corso Mix inherit a Cane Corso coat, it will be a short double coat that sheds a little year-round and a lot during seasonal changes. Weekly brushing, with daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and a bath as needed is usually enough to keep a Cane Corso coat looking great. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Plus, if anything is happening, you can often catch it early and get to the vet before it becomes a bigger issue. Gum disease in dogs is serious. By practicing good dental care for dogs , like brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, you can help prevent painful dental diseases and further complications from them later in life. The Cane Corso has a moderate activity level. Daily long walks and some playtime or other activity are usually enough for them. But, they are also a working dog, so they need a job to do and a lot of mental stimulation. The other parent breed could introduce the potential for a lower or higher energy dog. So, you do want to talk to the breeder about them so you know what potential range to prepare for in a Cane Corso Mix. A fully-grown Cane Corso stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Talking to the breeder about the other parent breed and meeting the mother dog in-person can give you an idea of what size to expect in a Cane Corso Mix. Cane Corsos tend to live years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you can likely expect a similar life span in a Cane Corso Mix. Meet Belle Our Beautiful Belle. Belle is a 6 year old fixed, vaccinated and healthy German Shepherd. She is loyal, loving and a very playful outdoor activity loving dog. She loves, and needs alot of physical activity and also really enjoys the water. Belle is looking for a home with no other animals or small children. Her home must be active and familiar with working breed dogs and their needs. She is used to daily walks and an active lifestyle and still has energy to burn! Belle was raised in a single animal home until this year when a human baby was welcomed. .The family is heartbroken but feels that Belle will be much happier without the antics of toddler aged children or infants. In her current home she has gone thru several basic obedience classes and is trained on an underground fence. She would do best with a normal fence and will not be able to be placed on a home with no fence due to her protective nature to neighboring animals. She is dog social but can be kind of a bossy lady to dogs her size. She would not be a dog that would do well at a dog park or 'free-range' group of dogs. She attends doggie day care for socialization and has since she was young. She would be happiest to live in a home with minimal dog interaction from surroundings and as the only animal. She would make the best companion to someone looking for a single dog to love! Belle aims to please and will be your very best friend. She is currently fostered in a home in Bay City. Anyone interested in meeting our adoptables must complete an online application, which is located on our website. Unlike other compact breeds, Labradors are not the best choice for pets if you live in a studio apartment. Make sure you have enough space in your house for your Labrador to breathe and move around throughout the day. The Need For Daily Exercise Labradors are highly energetic dogs and require a good amount of exercise on a daily basis. They need at least two hours of physical activity every day to keep themselves fit and healthy. Before you bring home a Lab puppy, make sure that you have time for their daily exercise routine. If you skip these sessions, your pet is likely to get obese, irritable, and unhealthy. Heavy Shedding If you or anyone in your family is allergic to dog hair, bringing home a Labrador may not always be the best choice. Labrador Retrievers are moderate to heavy shedders who blow their coats twice a year. With a Lab puppy at home, you are bound to see dog hair on your couch, carpet, bed — practically everywhere. However, regular grooming sessions help you deal with excessive shedding. Slow In Growing Up It is common for Labradors to retain their youthful tendencies for a fairly long period of time. This means that you may have to deal with chewing problems and separation anxiety until they are at least fours years old. Now that you are well versed with the important benefits and considerations to keep in mind before you bring your furry friend home, reach out to us for end-to-end assistance in getting yourself some of the best Labrador puppies for sale in Bangalore. Is it easy to train Labrador Retriever? Yes, Labrador Retrievers are easy to train owing to their smart and intelligent nature. They are highly alert dogs that are quick learners. Moreover, they have an innate need to impress the owners, making them learn new tricks and commands faster. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. So if you live near Carmel Indiana and are looking for a healthy and beautiful Mini Goldendoodle puppy then checkout our available pups now by Clicking Here. Below are some Mini Goldendoodle Pups that have been adopted! The size range of the female English Golden Retrievers I have owned range from lbs. In my 20 years of breeding English Teddy Bear Goldendoodles I am achieving a very good consistency with creating sizes. I am at the forefront of creating and perfecting the Pocket Size lbs. Micro is then a huge classification of any puppy less than 14 lbs. Whether you call them Micro Goldendoodles, Micro Petite Goldendoodles, Toy Goldendoodles, Teacup Goldendoodles; they all have the same great personality as their larger Goldendoodle ancestors in a cute small little package. Here at Hilltop Pups, we only breed Poodles with English Golden Retrievers for their excellent health record with an average life span of years. Absolutely no other breeds mixed in to rush the downsizing. Downsizing takes several generations by breeding in a smaller size poodle every 2 to 3 generations to retain the English Golden Retriever personality. Our smallest poodle here is 3 lbs. Since Hilltop Pups team is creating and perfecting the smallest Goldendoodles along with the increasingly popular Irish English Goldendoodles; we have our own size range chart of the average sizes we have witnessed in the past 20 years of breeding. Until an organization such as AKC or CKC identifies Goldendoodles as an official breed, no organization can state what the size standards are as they vary so greatly with breeders breeding American or English Golden Retrievers, plus the range of poodle sizes from lbs. Although Goldendoodles are not considered a Purebred dog breed; it is still important to register your puppy with a reputable canine tracking organization. This will allow breeders to have the information necessary to make responsible breeding decisions. I am an official Preferred Breeder by the strict Breeding Standards set forth by CKC which has the best pedigrees for tracking ancestors for breeding purposes. There are many Designer Dog Registries, but I prefer one of the two largest reputable groups. The English lines create the Teddy Bear look. The English Golden Retrievers have short stocky legs and shorter body length, whereas, American Golden Retrievers can have long bodies and are taller. From there we will have a better understanding of your wants and needs, to properly answer your questions. At Hilltop Pups you get the honor of choosing your puppy with our expert assistance of course. We do not assign puppies to you. We allow visitors because we are proud of our establishment. Beware of Breeders not allowing you to visit and hiding behind Parvo to scare you off. Google Earth those Breeders addresses and names. If you cannot find their name and address on their website immediately exit their website, they are hiding something such as arrest record for cruelty to animals. There are as many good Breeders as there are Puppy Mills out there. My two daughters Abby and Brittany are breeding dogs at their houses, and all puppies are raised with the same excellent breeding practices. Our three sons also house dogs for us; all their dogs are listed on my website, so we can link our websites together. I love hearing from my puppy parents how easy going their puppy is and friendly with everyone. This is due to all the loving care givers our dogs and puppies are with every single day. I have my three Granddaughters ages help with puppy Early Stimulation training and play, so puppies meet a wide variety of people and children in a comfortable trusting setting. When a puppy has been trained by only one person, say a lady; then the puppy may be fearful of a man or a child. Thus, we create confident, brave well-adjusted puppies. Luckily, I have the sweetest husband that cannot sit still and is always looking for something to do or something to clean up. Feel free to contact us via email preferred at hilltoppups yahoo. We will make every effort to answer your questions promptly and truthfully! During busy times, such as when there are several litters of puppies to care for or a mom in Labor, email is much easier for us and we can put in writing complex questions, so you have time to digest and study the information. Our FAQ page is an excellent place to start if you are not familiar with Goldendoodles, as I have collected 20 years of most often asked questions. Email is more efficient; when you call, I may be bathing or grooming a dog or puppy and I cannot leave them unsupervised. Emailing gives me time to answer questions thoroughly, attach reading material, pictures of puppies or Goldendoodles for example. For those people that cannot visit in person, we provide a lot of pictures and video to assist with the selection process. On our website you can search pages by size category, so you have less to look through. On the Sire and Dam pages all our dogs are listed and their health tests. Click on any document to view it. If you do not adopt a puppy from me request proof of health documents and pedigrees before submitting that non-refundable deposit. If a Breeder does not present documents up front, some never will. Some of the dogs listed on my website live with my two daughters and three sons. My two daughters work with me, live close by, and will someday take over my business. It all started here with a dog loving family with 5 children. With my background of Human Resource Management, I know how to research and apply my knowledge in respect to Breeding Laws, better breeding practices, and making my business the best it can be from the treatment of my dogs to my customer service. Some Breeders pick your puppy for you. At Hilltop Pups you get to choose your puppy with our expert advice. We post pictures of puppies every 7 to 10 days with videos, so you get to watch them grow. We schedule visits one hour apart at the top of each hour, once the schedule is full, we schedule on the half hour as well. After each visitor we disinfect everything that has been touched. I am aware some of you are coming a great distance. Go to your car in advance and GPS our address, make sure your GPS is set for highways "not scenic route" as we live on the edge of a town and the GPS will take you through winding country roads. Then give yourself an extra half hour, as I prefer you be early than late running into the next appointment. If you are not able to visit, I take many videos of the puppies and if you have narrowed down your selection to two puppies; we can make you videos of just those two puppies. Rarely in the last 18 years has someone changed their mind when they arrived here and picked a different puppy than the puppy they first fell in love with via our website. You are welcome to fly here to get your puppy. Currently American Airlines has resumed puppy shipping, but temperatures at any point in the flight including departure and layover, must be below 85 degrees and above 32 degrees. Which is a challenge here during the Summer and Winter months, plus any stop over destination and arrival destination temperatures. You are welcome to fly here; Louisville Kentucky airport is the closest at only 80 miles away. Many people are choosing Delivery to your door via vehicle delivery service. Here are reputable delivery companies I have been using for years; you contact the companies directly, arrange shipments with them, and pay them their shipping fee when they deliver the puppy to you. Flight Nanny Service contact Mary Venneketter for cost .Early Stimulation Training program is our highest priority which we start at 3 days old and once puppies are walking around, we still hold them every day on their backs, talk to them to create eye contact, rub all over them to make grooming easier in the future. We teach our puppies not to jump on people and to sit at your feet for attention. Puppies are paper trained to go on shredded paper which feels just like grass, so house training is a breeze, or if you need to train on potty pads that is easy as well. See what your puppy learns before you get the puppy home. The first step in your puppy's future. The next step in your puppy's future is your training from the very first day your puppy enters your home. Want to train your puppy from the convenience of your home as early as the day the puppy arrives home? No waiting until your puppy is fully vaccinated to start training. I suggest you start the training program before your puppy arrives; so you will be off to a great start. After completing this course your puppy should qualify. They are very friendly, helpful, easy to understand, and encouraging, which motivates you to continue in your training adventure. They offer video lessons, plus one on one training question and answer sessions via video chat. This is a Lifetime Program with Members Only Access to training methods, materials, and other resources needed for Pet Parenting and beyond. To continue training where we left off, I highly suggest you have the first unit completed before you get your puppy home. We create the best puppy for you, and you create the best Dog Ever! We are proud of our establishment and have a Visitation Room which includes windows for you to view where our Adult Dogs are Housed. We bring the puppies and adults to you to visit with them. For the safety of our dogs and puppies we do not allow you to walk through the facility, because we would need to disinfect everywhere you walked. We have had this practice in place since the beginning of our breeding program and have never contacted any health concerns by doing so, beware of Breeders that do not allow you to visit hiding behind false statements. Breeders walk everywhere in the world, shopping centers, gas station, Veterinarian Offices and then come home and walk around their kennels, just like anyone else. So why shouldn't people visit? I prefer puppies to get all the interactions they can with different people; you are providing valuable puppy training as well. Evansville is a one-hour drive. This is our house, not a public shopping center. We require appointments to visit as you do want to make sure we are home and able to focus our attention on you and have adequate time for you to interact with the puppies. This is not a large place; the visitation area can get crowded quickly if more than one family is visiting at a time. Our visitation Room does have windows on two sides, so you can see where and how all our adult dogs are housed. It is very important to stay as close to your scheduled arrival time as possible, give yourself that extra half hour for traffic concerns. We are at Eastern Time. Jasper is an aesthetically pleasing clean town of 15, and always rated at the top of the best places to live listings. How amazing it would be for AKC to do this; it is up to Breeders to commit to keeping their breed healthy going forward by health testing the parent dogs. Which believe me very few Breeders invest their money back into their dogs; so always demand copies of health testing prior to even submitting a deposit. DO Not trust Breeders that say they will provide the documents when the puppy goes home, demand proof up front. It is a nightmare to try to get paperwork from a Breeder after you have the puppy, because they do not have it. The Breeder is pulling on your emotions knowing you are getting attached to the puppy and then you are stuck with no proof that you have a healthy puppy that will live a long healthy life. Breeders never to rarely give you the correct documents after you have the puppy, learn from heart breaking experiences of having to re-home dogs that couldn't pass health screening. My research, commitment, and due diligence has paid off. Here is the foundation for creating the perfect Teddy Bear Goldendoodle and how to build conformity into the Breed. At Hilltop Pups we DNA test the coat type of all our dogs so we can create the most non-shedding hypoallergenic coat as possible. I follow this DNA rule when breeding to make sure my dogs are non-shedding. No guess work involved here; You can brush them and not even get hair to pull out. Next, we only breed with English Retrievers which produce a softer less shedding less matting coat than the coarser American Golden Retriever coats. The weight range of English Golden Retrievers that I have owned is for female and for males, although they look just and big and fluffier than the American Golden Retrievers. Next, we consider the color genetics behind the poodle: Reds-, browns-, and cream-colored poodles produce soft non-shedding coats. White, Gray, and Black poodles produce shredders even in the curly dogs; thus, they have been removed from Hilltop Pups breeding program. In we started breeding the Irish Goldendoodles. I am very pleased with what I have seen in the Irish Goldendoodles. Therefore, I only breed English Golden Retrievers as their life expectancy is years and very few ever have cancer. It takes a few generations to build the dark red poodle color back into the English Goldendoodles since the English Golden Retrievers are only white to cream. For the Irish we started with breeding a health tested American Golden Retriever to a health tested Irish Setter to get the hybrid vigor and dark red color; then bred that with a health tested male poodle and then back to another health tested poodle creating the F1b Irish Goldendoodles to ensure the hypo allergenic non-shed coats, plus get the dark red color and fabulous coats. Advantages of adopting an English Goldendoodle from Hilltop Pups Size range available 8 - 38 pounds Predictable size ranges for F2b and multi-Generations Hypoallergenic if past the F1 First generation, because we can DNA test the coat types for breeding. Fully Vaccinated for their age Trained with Early Neurological Stimulation Trained not to jump on people, but sit at your feet for attention Paper potty trained Pre-spoiled, loved, and well socialized Puppies go home with: A 2-year health guarantee; 4 years if you provide NuVet Vitamin Supplements Microchipped with pre-paid membership enrollment form CKC Registration Papers. Imagine you could come home to a lovable, dedicated, companion for life! If you knew what to look for when buying a German Shepherd puppy, you could find your next best friend. Before you buy your new best friend, read this information so you know what to look for in buying a healthy, quality German Shepherd puppy. I group them into major categories. Will you show him in conformation? Do you want to work with him in Schutzhund or herding? Or do you want a confident and alert companion? Know exactly what you want from your puppy. These dogs are the least costly since they have a trait that prevents them from winning in conformation competitions. These flaws rarely matter to most pet owners. And many minor faults like flat withers or slightly smaller offset ears will probably go unnoticed by most owners. The vast majority of GSDs are family pets. These dogs make great pets as long as they have sound temperaments! They breed some dogs for certain traits that are highly desirable but considered a fault. For example, long-coat or plush-coat GSDs. Show-quality dogs have good temperament and health. You usually buy them for their breed standard qualities that make them able to compete in confirmation or show events. A show-quality dog may cost significantly more if they have the traits desirable to win at a show. This group comes from Championship show lines with a long history of winning. If you plan on showing your Shepherd this is the quality you want. Beware of any breeder who claims they only raise competition-quality dogs. Even the best breeders produce many pet-quality dogs and if a breeder says they only breed perfect dogs, this is a red flag to not buy from them. The GSD is a herding breed, and the working-quality dogs excel at working trials such as scent competitions and Schutzhund. Other work includes climbing and jumping competitions or searching and tracking. They need mental stimulation to keep them occupied and take a lot of time to handle properly. These dogs are better with experienced handlers since you use them for high drive working and competition. They require hours and years of training and preparation for you to have total control during competition. We base this decision on preference. With the correct upbringing and training, both sexes are loyal companions and good with children. They may grow into more dominant dogs, so a confident handler is more desirable. Males may hike their back legs to mark their territory. This can occur on any object — chairs, walls, couches or even your leg. I suggest an extra bout of socialization during this stage, especially with other well-behaved dogs. So they may be better for the first-time owner. Unspayed females come into season every 6 months, so they must receive monitoring and watch to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Their season time can vary from as little as every 4 months to every 9 months. They can attract males to your property and on walks that will harass them if not spayed. Certain breeders and organizations will deal only in a certain coat length and color. The standard coat length is a short coat with double layers. Guard hairs on the top cover a softer underlayer of hair that provides warmth and protection. But there are many coat lengths available depending on your liking. Look online at the different GSD coat lengths to get an idea of what type of fur you want your dog to have. The longer the fur the more grooming involved. The color you choose is a matter of individual taste. Keep in mind the color of many Shepherds alters from their puppyhood to around 2 years of age. Your dog may become lighter or darker. Perhaps they will lose some of their markings as the color fades into the adult pattern. The best way to know what color and patterns your dog grows into is to see the parents of the litter. If the father is unavailable, then ask for photos. Why should you care where your dog comes from if you only want him as a pet companion? You want to get a dog that will live a long and healthy life from a source that has quality puppies. These tips will help you make the best decision on what type of pup fits in your life. Newspaper and Internet Classified Ads Newspaper and internet ads are in abundance. Many backyard breeders hide behind ads online or in local papers. But some breeders who use newspapers and classified ads are reputable and knowledgeable. The problem is you need to visit them to find out, and this can take time to sift through them all. Try the following more reputable suggestions to save yourself time. Dog Care Professionals Ask dog professionals for recommendations. Check with your local veterinarian, groomer, and boarding kennel personnel if they know reputable breeders in town. These professionals are good sources of quality leads. Use the same caution that you will for a classified ad. Verify their suggestions. Many of these organizations regularly receive puppies they need to re-home. While you might not know the full pedigree of the dog, purebred GSDs find themselves in shelters and rescues from no fault of their own. These organizations are a good resource for your first pup. Before adopting, find out as much information as you can. Was the puppy exposed to children? Did he live with other dogs or cats? A well-organized shelter or rescue helps you choose a German Shepherd match for your lifestyle. Start with looking online for GSD rescues and local shelters. Dog Clubs Dog clubs are local and national. These groups put you into contact with registered breeders through their own programs. They can give you the name of the GSD club contact closest to you for breed contacts. Dog clubs also have dog shows open to the public. This is a good time to watch the breed in action and to ask around for quality breeders. While using a dog club to connect you with a reputable breeder is not the only choice, it is one of the more reliable. If you are using a breeder to choose your German Shepherd puppy, this section will help you know the good from the bad. Use these tips to stay safe. Are selling overpriced or under-priced dogs. Lie to you and say you can make money off your new puppy by breeding them, despite them having flaws. Tells you that the GSD is a dog for everyone, with no disadvantages. Breeds multiple types of dogs and claims to be an expert on them all. If a breeder lets their mothers get pregnant more than once a year, this affects the quality of the puppies, so ask how many litters the mother has. These breeders selling unhealthy puppies also will refuse to take bag their dogs if you need to return them for any reason and have no contracts. They have healthy puppies and will answer your questions and have you make multiple visits. Openly show you where the mother and pups spend their time, including their garden or yard. Tells you the up and downs of owning the breed. Have all pedigree and vet paperwork on hand for your review. Specializes in breeding only GSDs source. They openly share this information with you. They have screened their dogs for health issues and can confirm this with documentation which they proudly give you a copy. Healthy mothers are given rest from breeding, and a reputable breeder gives their mothers time off from reproduction. Ask if your breeder if they are willing to take back their dogs if you cannot keep them, as this is standard for a quality breeder with a good reputation. Make sure your breeder has a written contract with detailed information and health guarantees. These are expected for safe breeding practices. So, while this is not a reason not to get a GSD, it is a reason to look for adequate breeders, to ask for health certificates, to take good care of your dog, and to go to routine vet check-ups. German Shepherds can also be costly to take care of not just to purchase The regular vet visits, the high need for exercise, and the extra-space requirements all make the GSD a relatively expensive dog to take care of in terms of money as well. German Shepherds are very smart but that also makes them easily bored — they require lots of mental stimulation As with all smart dog breeds such as retrievers and other shepherds, the high intelligence of the GSD can be a curse as much as a blessing. So, what can be done to avoid boredom? Toys and time. However, an inexperienced dog owner can find a GSD to be more than a handful. Why is that? Simple — because they are so smart! Yes, their intelligence means that you can train them a lot but it also means they can be temperamental, manipulative, and stubborn! This breed is cute and cuddly at home but socially awkward in public German shepherds are incredibly cute, social, and loving animals. They are loyal to their family and would do anything for those close to them. What does this mean for you? Even if you just get a random GSD and not give it any special training or socialization, the dog may still get along just fine with a cat or a newborn baby. However, in general, the social awkwardness and guard-dog nature of GSDs means that they often need to be socialized well if you want to make other additions to the households down the line. Make sure that you teach your growing GSD to get along with other dog breeds in the dog park or at home. If you have a cat or are thinking of getting a cat, make sure your German Shepherd is accustomed to interacting with cats without any aggression. One of the best and easiest ways to avoid most of the problems above is to just get a second German Shepherd! Yes, we did just say that this breed can be a handful. However, a second dog usually brings much more benefits than negatives: The second dog will join the first in the playtime, meaning that both will exercise with each other very often and minimize the need for your involvement. Having a second GSD also means more mental stimulation for both dogs — again, less work for you and more fun for them. As natural guard dogs, German Shepherds may need to be trained not to bark Unfortunately, GSDs are especially bad for apartment owners not just because they are big but also because they tend to bark at strangers. They are guard dogs after all. This can be avoided, of course, there are ways to train any dog not to bark at strangers or at outside noises. There are several reasons for this: The frequent barking we mentioned above. Yes, you can train that behavior away but your landlord may still forbid you from getting a GSD. Getting a carpet or another type of floor insulation will help here. Giving your dog enough playtime outside will also alleviate this problem. But you may still get in trouble with your neighbors. They are just a large breed and many people, including parents of small children, are afraid of large dogs. Not only are GSDs not hypoallergenic, but they also tend to shed a lot! There are two main reasons for this: The aforementioned health concerns that some German Shepherds have and that get more and more likely as the dog gets older. The simple fact that the GSD is a large dog breed and larger breeds just have a shorter lifespan than smaller ones. As you can see, there are lots of factors to consider before getting a GSD. In general, the right GSD owner can be characterized as such: Has a larger-than-average home, a yard, and a nearby dog park. Has enough time to spend with a German Shepherd. Knows how to train and socialize a GSD properly. Has the financial means to support a German Shepherd. Wants a second dog to play with the first one. How to prepare for getting a German Shepherd? Just like soon-to-be-parents before their first baby, there are lots of books and research to comb through if you want to give your future German Shepherd the care, upbringing, socialization, and care it needs. So Make sure your home is ready for a large dog to soon start springing through it. Make sure you have the time and daily schedule to play with a GSD. Consider owning a Cairn Terrier! In this article, we explore who would benefit them as furry friends! Check them here! Read on to discover nine types of people who should consider owning this unique breed. Check this article to learn more about the types of people who are perfect for owning a Poodle dog! Check with local veterinarians' offices, animal shelters, pet supply stores, and other area pet business for referrals to dog rescue organizations in your area. Contact one local dog rescue group for referral to other area groups. Some dog rescue groups work with all dogs, while others are breed-specific. Most rescues groups have established networks with other area rescues. The organization's website also provides links to rescue organizations. Although the majority of dogs looking for new homes through rescue groups are adults, sometimes rescue groups have puppies to place. Most German Shepherds looking for homes through rescue groups do not have papers. If registering your puppy is important, or if you intend to enter it into competitions, you will need its title papers and health records, so a rescued dog may not be right for you. Many dog rescues will require a thorough application process in order to assure that you will be a good fit for the dog. Be prepared to disclose your address and whether you own your home, as well as your employment status and your philosophy when it comes to raising a dog. You will want to make sure that the dog's temperament works well with you and your family. Ask whether you can get the dog checked out by your veterinarian. You will want your vet to check the dog's general health and for serious conditions, such as heart murmurs. Be sure to ask about the dog's health while the rescue has had it and if it is up to date on shots and healthcare. A good rescue should actually offer this information upfront. Get a history of the dog's healthcare up to that point. Has it had its first vaccination, had heart worm treatment, and parasite control? These should have all been done before the age when a puppy is adoptable. While many rescue organizations cannot tell you much about the dogs they place, because the dogs have been rescued off the street or they have been given up anonymously, sometimes they have a bit of information. Get all the information you can about the dog's past so that you can assess their general background and health. Dog rescue organizations are usually run on a shoe-string budget. While they depend mostly on volunteers, they do need funds to transport and care for dogs. Your adoption fee will most likely help to pay for the rescue of other dogs in the future. Before you bring this dog home, there are a few things to understand about the German Shepherd breed. They are highly intelligent. German Shepherds are animals that catch on quickly to almost everything. Your daily routine, commands, and household expectations are all things that are a breeze for them. With intelligence comes a lot of stubbornness. They require mental stimulation. Long walks are enough to tire out a lot of dog breeds, but with their intelligence, these dogs need more than just physical activity. German Shepherds are working dogs, and they benefit when there is a mental challenge as well as a physical one. If you genuinely want to tire them out, you must incorporate physical exercise with mental exercise. They have a lot of energy. Many German Shepherds benefit from agility courses to give them the appropriate amount of exercise. When you keep them stimulated, they are less likely to act out and cause destruction around the house. Image Credit: Niels Hansen, Pixabay 4. German Shepherds fiercely love their owners. German Shepherds tend to bond more closely to one family member than the rest. Still, they are lovers instead of fighters. They want to spend just as much time cuddling with you at night as they want to be out working during the day. They are great listeners. What else would you expect with those enormous ears perched on top of their heads? Those radar ears are listening to even the most minor sounds, and they are always eager to hear your voice. Image Credit: Capri23auto, Pixabay 6. German Shepherds were bred to be guard dogs. German Shepherds were originally bred to guard the fields of sheep and cattle. Whenever an intruder or predator came onto their land, they immediately alerted their keeper. Without the proper training, this behavior is sometimes territorial and can be aggressive towards other dogs and strangers. However, with the proper training, it makes you feel at ease whenever you go to bed at night. They are clingy. Not every German Shepherd is clingy, but this breed is known for following people everywhere they go. They are known to bark and howl when left alone for long periods. They are better suited for experienced dog owners. German Shepherds are a handful. These dogs require constant training and dedication. Without it, they could be aggressive or destructive. Image Credit: nori jaafer, Pixabay .They do better in pairs. Owning a dog is a better experience when it is mutually beneficial to both of you. Related Reads:. Final Thoughts How To Buy a German Shepherd When buying a German Shepherd, know what to look for in a reputable breeder, find a breeder specializing in German Shepherds, evaluate the breeder, consider the price and your budget, and choose the sex, type, color, and coat of the German Shepherd puppy. Checklist to buy a GSD 1. Know What To Look For in a Reputable Breeder The German Shepherd is a popular dog breed, and the growing demand for this breed has registered a corresponding growth in the number of breeders. But the increase in the number of breeders has also raised eyebrows about how some dog breeders meet their purpose. So, what should you look for in a German Shepherd breeder? When buying a German Shepherd, look for a breeder with experience and credibility. Check the litter and their living conditions. When researching how to buy a German Shepherd, the first thing to know is there are different types of breeders. While some people breed dogs with the good intention of providing healthy pets to those seeking to own a dog, others breed them with the primary purpose of profit-making and, in some cases, in deplorable conditions. Freedom from discomfort: the dog has a favorable environment for shelter that includes appropriate bedding, favorable temperatures, and extreme light and noise protection. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease: the dog has the required vet visits for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, including recommended vaccinations and tests. Freedom to express normal behavior: the dog has enough space and facilities and can express it through stretching, jumping, running, and playing, and can interact with other dogs as desired. Freedom from fear and distress: the dog is treated in a manner that does not cause psychological stress. This could be done by avoiding overcrowding and providing overall safety. Dogs bred following these five freedoms will have a more enjoyable and successful life once placed in the care of an owner or family. Following these freedoms also distinguishes ethical breeders from unethical ones. As a prospective dog owner, you must acquire all the information that confirms your future pet has been bred following these five freedoms and, thus, by an ethical breeder. But how exactly do you find that breeder? I discuss some of the most reliable ways and others that will need you to do a more thorough search and breeder evaluation. National Kennel Clubs National kennel clubs are a reliable source of information for buying German Shepherds. You can access information on each listed dog regarding their age, sex, weight and height, personality, AKC DNA test number, energy level, shedding, and trainability, among other features and traits. Here, you can access the breed parent club website in this case, the German Shepherd Dog Club of America and a breeder referral name where you can get help and information. Kennel clubs are resourceful when looking for a German Shepherd in other countries. In the UK, for example, the Kennel Club operates an Assured Breeder Scheme in which you can find a comprehensive and current list of Kennel Club Assured Breeders and other breeders with pedigree puppies. Only KC-registered puppies are advertised on the platform. So, you will find all the information you need about the particular breed you are interested in. In the US, the German Shepherd Dog Club of America has a Classified Ads section on their website where you can search through breeder and puppy ads to find what you are looking for. Also, the club advises that one of the best ways to find quality German Shepherd Puppies to buy is by contacting the German Shepherd regional breed clubs. The clubs have plenty of training, sporting, and dog show initiatives during the year. Some regional or state clubs provide services for GSD rescue and referral. For example, on the Treasure Coast German Shepherd Dog Club website, you will find information on breeder referral and rescue, and you can contact them by email to send details of your inquiry. Charitable Organizations Charitable organizations that deal with dogs carry out rescue, care, and rehoming services. They are optimal options for finding a German Shepherd when you want to rescue or adopt. There are plenty of German Shepherd charitable organizations that can provide reliable information on buying or adopting a German Shepherd Dog. On the Meet Our Dogs section of their website, you can search through available GSDs to determine if you would be interested in adopting. According to the organization, their adoption fees are extremely low and will not cover half of the costs incurred on the rescued GSDs. Dog Blogs and Websites Outbound links that direct you to GSD breeders or puppies for sale on blogs and websites are also options. As with the Google search, you also need to evaluate the reliability of the linked breeder and the quality of the German Shepherd puppy using the ethical breeder guidelines. Consult Vets, Groomers, Trainers, and Owners Veterinarians, groomers, and trainers are experts in their own right — considering that they interact with German Shepherds on a day-to-day basis. They may also work for breeders and will, therefore, know which ones have high breeding standards. German Shepherd owners who have a positive experience buying their pet from a reliable breeder would also be dependable sources of information on where to buy a GSD. In all cases, ensure that there is no conflict of interest with people advocating for breeders on other factors rather than quality. You should now evaluate the breeder on various breeding issues before buying a German Shepherd. Evaluate The Breeder To make out if a breeder is ethical , observe their environment and question them about the following breeding aspects: Experience in breeding German Shepherds: Enquire if the breeder has been in the breeding career for long or just starting. Those who have been in the breeding practice for a long time will explain their experience with instances of success and give you verifiable examples of people they have sold German Shepherds to. Breeder credibility: It is expected that a credible breeder will be registered with the national kennel club and be a member of local or national breed clubs. Bloodline and dog health: Health conditions and genetic defects are easily passed on through the bloodline. Enquire whether the parents are registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA and if the litter has had its first round of vaccinations seek specific details about the vaccinations. Also, check to see if they have been dewormed. Learn More on How To Choose a German Shepherd Breeder… Choosing a GSD Breeder: HOW TO Breed temperament: Enquire about the typical traits of the breed to find out if the breed will be good for your family context, whether your newly acquired GSD will be good with children or if the breed gets along with other dogs, and if it will do well in an apartment environment among other specifications. If you have done your homework, you will already know the answers to these questions — and so should the breeder! Dog appearance: Ask to see the entire litter and the parents. The general appearance of the German Shepherds should indicate that they are healthy and well-nurtured. The breeding space should not be smelly and unkempt, and the German Shepherds should not be crowded in small kennels. These negatives could be the first indications of a puppy mill. Also, enquire about the possibility of returning the German Shepherd should you be unable to keep him for any reason. While these aspects will give you the necessary information to weigh up the reliability of a breeder, it is expected that an ethical breeder wants the best for the dog they are selling you. They should ask questions to ensure that the dog is in good hands. These questions will single them out as ethical breeders and several other characteristics that show they care about their breed. Characteristics of Ethical German Shepherd Breeders When buying a German Shepherd, an ethical breeder will stand out in the following aspects: They will be knowledgeable about the German Shepherd breed. This will be manifested in their comprehensive knowledge of the breed standard, nutrition, exercise, temperament, and grooming. The ethical breeder will answer questions on any of these aspects precisely and without getting impatient with you. They will not sell you the German Shepherd puppy before they are eight weeks old. Puppies younger than that are still heavily dependent on their mother, and it would be too soon to separate them. Note, however, that the best age to bring home a puppy is at weeks. They will give you references. For example, reliable vets and other people who have bought puppies from them. They will also be ok referring you to other breeders for a comparative experience. They will ask you about your lifestyle and family. They want to ensure that the German Shepherd puppy is going to a loving and caring home. For example, the vaccines and tests that have been done. They will also give you specific details on training, nutrition, and vet care. They will be keen to guarantee the safety of the German Shepherd. By asking you to sign a contract, giving you tips on good care for the dog, promising to call to find out how the puppy is doing, and soliciting you to ask any questions, you might have, even after taking the puppy home. They will give you information to register the German Shepherd with the national kennel club and with other national and local breed clubs. While ethical breeders will stand out in these aspects, unethical breeders will show shortcomings in their care for the breed. Shortcomings of Unethical German Shepherd Breeders The most common representation of unethical dog breeders are those found in what is dubbed as puppy mills in the US or puppy farming in the UK and Australia. But backyard breeders are also considered part of this category of breeders. The breeder will be reluctant to show you their kennels and breeding facilities except for the puppy you are interested in. If breeders show you their kennels, you will notice that the dogs are enclosed in neglected and overcrowded kennels without enough space to sit, sleep, stand, or stretch. The breeder will not ask about you, your lifestyle, your family, or the reason you are interested in a German Shepherd Dog. The litter and their parents will appear malnourished, indicating they have scanty access to healthy food and fresh water. The dams may be continuously bred at the expense of their health. The puppies will be taken away from their mothers early, often before they are six weeks old. The breeder may not have the patience to answer your questions about their breeding standards and the lineage of their dogs. Both puppies and adult dogs may show signs of disordered behavior, such as fear of the breeder, a sign they may be maltreated. Consider The Price and Your Budget When you think of buying a German Shepherd, the buying price is one of the key aspects you should consider. So, how deep will you need to dig into your pocket to bring your GSD puppy home? What is the price of a German Shepherd? Prices are determined by lineage, litter size, color, breeder qualifications, breeding costs, and location. Puppies with the highest prices are from a top pedigree or are show quality. My in-depth article, How Much is a German Shepherd? Instead, if you go by breeder websites from a Google search, you will find a wide range of price differences. Alternatively, if you decide to adopt from rescue centers, you will certainly pay a lot less. These are extremely important because they take care of the specific characteristics you want to find in your new puppy. Show, Working, or Companion German Shepherd? Being clear about why you want to own a German Shepherd is key in making the buying decision. This is also important so you can inform your breeder whether you are looking for a family dog, a competition, a show, or a guard dog. You can learn the differences between working line and show line GSDs in this article. Even though an entire litter will have the same bloodline, knowing the purpose of acquiring a dog will inform your choice to go for ethical breeders keen on issues related to health, temperament, and other traits that would be good to keep in mind when making a purchase. While Male and female German Shepherds are similar in many traits, they are also different in a number of them, which might affect your choice when buying. Consider what you want the dog for and your experience when determining whether to purchase a male or female German Shepherd. If you want a guard dog, go for a male because they are more dominant and aggressive. Please note, these are approximations as individual dogs will vary. Males will portray a masculine build as opposed to the delicate features of the female. Female GSDs will be in heat twice annually. If you do not intend to breed your pet, you should consider spaying her. Female GSDs live longer .These traits may not be vividly pronounced in young puppies, but it is important to bear them in mind. Whether you choose to buy a male or female pup will depend on your circumstances, such as experience, lifestyle, and purpose for the dog. You can check out this article, Male vs. Female German Shepherd. It has loads of info to help you decide which one will be best for you. Read more about the German Shepherd colors here. You may not be able to choose from the entire range of colors, but you know the extent of the variety that you can have. White German Shepherds are stunning-looking dogs, and if you are interested in this unique color, head over to my article all about the White German Shepherd. This is particularly important if you were looking for a show dog, as a white dog is disqualified from showing in many countries, and you will need to check the breed standard for your area. You will also need to decide on the German Shepherd coat and whether you want a standard coat length or the less common long-haired variety. Whatever you choose, German Shepherds are heavy shedders. Ask the breeder for a detailed list, and this will help in picking up the right and pure-bred German Shepherd puppy. Final Thoughts Buying a German Shepherd is a dream that many dog lovers have, but that may be hindered by a lack of information about important buying knowledge. By doing this due diligence you should hopefully get a puppy that not only fits your family and lifestyle, but also lives a long and happy life. You want to choose one that has a track record, online reviews, and a good reputation in the German Shepherd world… not some first timer nobody has heard of. Be suspicious of low prices: If the German Shepherd puppies are advertised as a lower than average price, be wary. The old adage about if it looks too good to be true is almost always the case with puppies. Low prices can be a sign of an unhealthy litter. Find out how many litters the mother has had already: German Shepherd mothers should not have anything more than one litter each year. The best scenario would be a litter every couple of years. More pregnancies than this mean she has been over-bred and both her and the puppies could have health problems. Look out for serious conditions and hereditary issues including hip and spine issues, soft palate issues, eye problems, and hearing problems. I would recommend getting a puppy from a German Shepherd older than this just to be sure. Before 8 weeks of age, they should still be with her, and it can also help you understand what type of dog your puppy will grow up to be. If the breeder refuses access to the mother, walk away. Ask where the puppies have been living: If the German Shepherds have been in a dark garage away from human interaction it will mean they will be harder to socialize and harder to train. Ask how often the German Shepherds have been handled: When puppies are regularly handled by humans, they will be much easier when taken home. Ask whether a vet has checked the puppies: Puppies should have been checked by a vet and had their first set of vaccinations before going to their new home. Ask to speak to a previous buyer:A reputable breeder will let you talk to people who have bought a German Shepherd puppy from them before. If they are unable to supply references and contacts, they could be hiding something. I hope you find these questions to ask a German Shepherd breeder helpful. Please do print them off before you visit the litter and decide to buy. The personality of the German Shepherd breeder This is so often over-looked, but I wanted to add it on as something to look for when buying a German Shepherd puppy. Only buy a German Shepherd puppy from a breeder who is prepared to take the time to answer any questions and concerns you might have. Breeders that treat buyers with respect will most likely extend that kindness to the German Shepherd mother and her puppies. This gives you an indication of what health problems could in store. Puppies can sometimes have the following conditions: Allergies. May not even be aware of the breed standard. Breeds to any convenient dog. Strives towards the ideal. Often helps to define it. Does not need to promote establishment; sells to brokers, pet shops, etc. Often rescues only to attain more stock. Rarely attends shows or trials. Shows and trials to objectively test breeding stock. Often judges, provides seminars, writes articles, and willingly mentors serious Hobby Breeders. Knowledge Often pretends to know some. May share false or incomplete information. Studies continuously. Impacts the breed for many decades with knowledge of dogs over many generations. All pups sold have full breeding rights. Yes, and diligently follows up on progeny. Keeps up with health and temperament issues affecting the breeding and provides in-depth guarantees No need to; mostly supplies brokers and pet shops. Meets minimum standards as required by state law. May refuse to acknowledge most problems. Maintains a solid support system — accepts full responsibility for every puppy produced. Performs health testing for all breeding stock for genetic diseases affecting the particular breed. No interest, may offer papers as proof of quality. Papers alone are not proof of quality. No interest. May provide undocumented paperwork for appearances sake. Is unfamiliar with health testing usually statements of good health are stated to impress consumers. Intensive testing always a priority. Often initiates club sponsored seminars and clinics. Maintains records on all dogs in gene pool including progeny. Often supplies brokers and pet shops, records unavailable. Dogs and puppies are often auctioned off in lots, records unavailable. Focuses mostly on current dogs, no records or knowledge of genes. Attempts to continuously track every puppy produced. Bases entire breeding program on extensive gene pool data. Clean environment always maintained Minimum standards vary greatly in cleanliness. Minimum standards maintained for state inspections. Conditions may vary greatly depending on available income, usually makeshift accommodations. Clean, healthy and mentally stimulating environment. Expected longevity with any particular breed Will continue as long as the sales are coming. Depends on popularity of specific breeds. Unrealistic expectations — easily disillusioned. On a mission-plans to stay for the long haul. Health guarantee provided No, it cuts into profits. No health guarantee beyond proof of first set of vaccines, if that. Not qualified to give advice if a problem arises. Offers written guarantee and is available to answer questions to new owners. Good knowledge of history in dogs. Extensive knowledge of health history, offers replacements to owners of genetically affected dogs. Ability to meet the parents of the litter If available, may be in poor physical condition. If available, dogs are not used to contact with people. May or may not be well loved and cared for companions, often unwilling to show entire litter or parents to buyer. Shows friendly mother and entire litter in clean environment; stud dog too, if in residence. Helps buyer choose appropriate puppy. Can explain how breeding was planned to emphasize specific qualities and can speak at length about how puppies compare. What you can expect after purchase Nothing, may not be able to contact at all. No concern for dog after sale is final. Available for questions, and wants to keep in touch. Will take back dog or puppy at any time. After purchase will help with training and grooming, available for all questions and knows the answers. Price Priced according to market, but is marked up from original source for profit. Mid-range to move puppies quickly. High end of mid-range. Price will not reflect all that is invested. Use only physically sound, mature dogs of stable temperament for breeding. These characteristics are rarely, if ever, determined before the age of two for females. Continue to educate themselves regarding genetic diseases pertinent to the breed including, hip and elbow dysplasia. Documentation of hip and elbow screenings should be available to prospective puppy buyers. Apply the same high standards to outside bitches sent to their stud dogs as they apply to their own breeding stock. Temperament testing of a litter before puppies are offered for sale is encouraged. Take appropriate steps to have each puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian for general health prior to placement. Each puppy should be vaccinated and de-wormed by a veterinarian. Endeavor to gain personal knowledge of the temperament and health of every dog they breed, or to which they breed, in order to gather information on which to base future breeding decisions. They share this information fully and honestly with other breeders and with prospective buyers. Sell breeding prospects to knowledgeable, ethical and experienced persons or are willing to help educate and guide novices. Do not engage in misleading or untrue advertising and do not use GSDCA membership as a marketing tool. Do not sell, supply, donate or surrender any dog for which they are responsible to a pet shop, catalogue house, wholesale dealer in dogs, Humane Society or to a laboratory. They should have reasonable assurance that each individual receiving a dog will provide a home with appropriate shelter, restraint, control and responsible care. Encourage puppy buyers to go to puppy obedience classes to help their puppies to become better canine good citizens. The achievement of a Canine Good Citizen certificate should be encouraged. Since homeowners insurance and local laws vary greatly, a refusal to let you visit the kennels may not, in and of itself, be a bad sign. You should ask for and receive a satisfactory explanation. The puppies are not social or look sickly. How to read those ads. A few more things to look out for. Anyone can buy a puppy from a champion, but it does not mean that they have any other interest in the breed but to bank on the name and make money. Having a Champion in a pedigree is like having a billionaire relative. AKC registration does not guarantee quality. AKC papers are much like the title of a car; papers are issued to the junked Chevy on blocks in your yard just as easily as they are on a brand new, shiny Jaguar. AKC does not control breeding, approve litters, or guarantee temperaments. AKC Registration is automatic if you buy from a reputable breeder — they will provide all necessary paperwork when you buy a puppy. There are several groups that are registering dogs, even mixed breeds, for a fee. This registration means nothing, and is of no value to you. Are there too many defects for the animal to be bred? Shop with care. Rarely will a good breeder have the luck to own both dogs for the perfect litter. There are some good and very reasonable reasons to have both parents on site. However, you need to ask the right questions and understand why this is true. They might be, they might not. Are they too big to be cute anymore? Need more money? Is there a problem? Usually because there are more on the way. Be very wary of this one. Will a Breeder Ask Me Questions? Conscientious breeders want the best available home for their puppies. This determines the amount of time you will have available for your new addition. There are very important items that should be supplied by the breeder. Breeders will typically give you the following items: A signed pedigree A current Health Record; including de-wormings and vaccinations. American Kennel Club registration papers or application Sales contract. The type of contract varies and must be mutually agreeable to the breeder and buyer. Much depends on what you expect from the puppy show, pet, or performance. Feeding schedule including the type and amount of food. Copy of OFA certification of sire and dam, if available.

But are White Labradors really Labradors? Are they healthy and happy pooches or does their pale color result in health problems? Read on to learn everything you need to know about these wonderful dogs and why most of them make excellent family pets or show pooches. He did have some qualities that I thought were different from the many Labs I raised over the years, but I would not consider it outside the norm for a Labrador Retriever. Different Types Of White Labradors On the most basic level, white Labradors are Labradors that have a coat that is white, or almost white, in color. But their coat takes on this unusual pigment for a Labrador for a number of different reasons. These dogs are the same as all other Labs; it is just that both of their parents had the right genes to give them a coat that approaches white. They will have the same black or brown nose and eyes as other Labs, as well as the same intelligence and temperament. They will also face the same health risks, but no additional ones due to the color of their coat. Yellow Labradors come in a range of colors, from fox red, to golden, to cream, and of course, white. White is just another natural variation within the spectrum. White Labrador dogs are usually specifically created by breeders, who have been broadening the color range of Yellow Labradors for decades in order to widen their market. White Labradors are more likely to be English Labradors than American Labradors because of the history of the breeding. This means they will also have the stockier, broader look of the English Lab. Albino Labradors Unlike Yellow Labradors with a white coat, which are healthy dogs that do not differ from their darker colored brothers and sisters, some White Labradors are the result of albinism. This is a genetic condition universal throughout the animal kingdom, but rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20, The result is a pooch that has white hair and extremely pale skin. They are usually easily distinguishable from Yellow Labs that are white as they will also lack pigment in their eyes and nose. Their eyes are often a distinctive red color, though they can also be blue. Albino Labradors often develop health problems as a result of their lack of pigmentation. They are very susceptible to sun damage, which can easily result in tumors and skin cancer. Their eyes are also very sensitive to the sun and can easily become damaged. They are also often born blind or suffer from eye deformities. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish these pups from albino dogs, but they will have normal eye color. This condition is also relatively rare among Labradors, as it is a recessive trait. It can come with similar health concerns as the areas of the skin that lack pigment can also be easily damaged by the sun. But they are not at the same risk as far as the eyes are concerned. Silver Labrador White Labradors should also not be confused with Silver Labradors , which occurs as a result of the dilution of the darker pigment of black or brown dogs. They can be registered with the Kennel Club as Chocolate Labradors, but they are excluded from shows. But just like Yellow Labradors with a white coat, these Chocolate Labradors with a silver coat are natural within the color range of Labradors and they do not have different personality traits or health conditions as the result of the color of their coat. Considering this, and the fact that White Labradors are relatively rare among Yellow Labradors, they are not always easy to come across. To find a White Labrador, you will need to speak with a breeder that has chosen color as one of the traits for which they are controlling. However, it is not advisable to work with a breeder who is only or primarily controlling for color, as health and temperament are still more important features in a dog than color. Bear in mind that English Labs look different; they tend to be stockier and broader in the chest and face. They also have different personalities. They tend to be more playful and silly, but have less energy. They have become very popular dogs on the show circuit, while their silly and friendly personality makes them great family pets. It can be difficult to tell if a Lab will grow to be a true White Lab when they are a puppy, as lots of Yellow Labradors are born with a very pale coat, which gets darker as they age. Of course, while seeking out a white Yellow Labrador might be something you want, seeking out an Albino Lab or even a Leucistic Lab is not advisable because of the related health conditions. However, that is not to say there are not Albino Labs out there that need someone to adopt them and give them a loving home. American Or English Labrador? As seeking out a White Labrador probably means choosing between an American and an English Labrador , it is worth considering the differences between the two. Both dogs are friendly, good-natured, and companionable, and also intelligent and highly trainable. This is why they make excellent companion dogs and working dogs. But both were originally bred as retrievers. American Labs are those that have been bred for working, while English Labradors have been bred for conformation, which means they have been bred to more exactly align with the definition of the species, which is why they are an excellent choice for show dogs. They are called English Labradors because they are significantly more common in the UK. Meanwhile, you guessed it, the working-style Labrador is more common in the USA. But, while this is how the breeds are characterized, this is far from prescriptive, and you will often encounter English Labs as working dogs and American Labs competing in shows. So, these are not strict definitions but rather a useful guide to help you distinguish between the two extremes of the breed. They are all registered as Labrador Retrievers with the Kennel Club. That said, there are some key differences to look out for. American Labs are usually a bit taller, ranging from .This height difference results because American Labs tend to have longer legs, while English Labs are stockier. But American Labs are also heavier than their English brothers and sisters, ranging from 70 to pounds, while English Labs are usually between 60 and 85 pounds. The appearance of the two dogs is also different. English Labs tend to look heavier and more substantial, with a barrel chest. They also have a wider head and a fuller face with a shorter muzzle. The neck is thicker, and so is their coat so they also shed a bit more. American Labs also tend to have more energy than English Labs, and as a result, it is often thought a firmer hand is needed to keep American Labs under control. For this reason, they are often considered better as working dogs, and when they move into the home, they need a very active family. Because English Labs are considered calmer and quieter, they are more versatile as a family dog and also easier to train for shows. I would consider him an American Lab based on looks although his breeder said he had both American and English in his ancestry. His energy level was closer to that of an American Lab, but his goofy temperament more closely resembled an English Lab. Yes, White Labradors are very rare. Albinism is extremely rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20, White Labradors that are pale Yellow Labradors are also rare. White Labs are at the extreme color range available for these pooches, and it is required that both parents have and pass on the genes that allow for this extremely light color. Exactly how big your Labrador will get depends on a lot of things, but color is not one of them. As a general rule, if your White Labrador is an American Labrador, you can expect them to weigh between 70 and pounds. English Labradors, while they look stockier, tend to be lighter, between 60 and 85 pounds, They also tend to be smaller than their American brothers and sisters. A healthy White Labrador will have the same life expectancy as the majority of Labrador Retrievers, so about 12 years. However, White Labradors that are Albino will have a significantly lower life expectancy, as they are much more likely to develop serious medical conditions, such as skin cancer and tumors. Are White Labradors Purebred? Yes, White Labradors are purebred dogs within the Yellow Labrador Retriever category, and they can be registered for shows and with the Kennel Association as Yellow Labradors. Do White Labradors Shed? All Labradors shed , and they tend to shed a lot. They have a double coat, which means they have a lot of hair to leave behind. It can be especially challenging in the shedding season, which is Spring and Fall. So, yes, you will be finding those beautiful white hairs all over your home. He definitely shed more than any other dog, Lab or otherwise that we had in our home. Do White Labradors Turn Yellow? Some of the hair of a White Labrador, especially around the tips of the ears, can turn yellow with sun exposure. In addition, many Yellow Labradors may appear white when they are born, but their hair will darken over the first few months of their life. So, you cannot always tell if a Labrador will be white during the first few months of their lives. Final Thoughts When breeders refer to a White Labrador, they are referring to a Yellow Labrador that has been specifically bred to have very pale fur. This is more common among English Labs than American Labs, but they are a naturally occurring phenomenon that occurs from the breeding process. These dogs share all the same wonderful traits as other Labradors. They are friendly and intelligent, and they make excellent family dogs, working dogs, and show dogs. However, these White Labs should not be confused with Albino Labs or Leucistic Labs, which are dogs with rare genetic conditions, meaning they lack pigment in their skin. These dogs can suffer from serious health issues as a result of sun exposure. While there are dogs out there of this variety that need a loving place to call home, it is not the same as adopting a White Labrador. They do need special care and attention. We focus on a genetically sound Labrador and we specialize only in Yellow Labs of the yellow cream to fawn coloring white. The AKC standard says that yellow Labs may range in color from fox-red to light cream. We know that though our English Lab puppies may look snow white or sometimes ivory in coloring, they are always a yellow Labrador Retriever and registered with AKC as that. Labradors come in 3 colors: yellow Labs, chocolate Labs and black Labs. Yellow Labradors have always come in a range of shades. This range has been deliberately broadened in recent years through selective breeding of more muted tones. But despite this, there are only three recognised colors of Labradors — black , chocolate and yellow. Yellow Labs can now be commonly seen ranging from darkest rich fox red, through shades of golden, pale yellow, cream and even white. White Labs and fox red Labs are both classified as yellow Labs. Even though the hues look very different, they are just variations of the same base color. Changes in Trends What is considered desirable or fashionable changes from one decade to the next. And certainly differs between the show and working communities of Labrador breeders. Currently, working or American Labradors prefer the darker shades of yellow, and English Labradors are often much paler. English Labs differ from American or Working bred Labs quite dramatically in terms of their shape and personalities. In general your white English Labrador will be fun loving, a little silly and very sociable with people and other dogs. He might take a little longer to mature than his working bred cousins and may have less of a hyped up drive to retrieve or run around all day. A white English Lab will also often have a broader chest and head, as well as slightly shorter legs. The Albino Labrador Albinism is an interesting trait that is found throughout the animal kingdom. It is caused by a gene which switches off coloring. Albino Labs will have white hair or fur, and pale skin. They may also have red eyes, although very pale blue eyes can also be seen in some albinos when some pigmentation remains. True albinism in dogs is rare, and it is not a desirable trait as unfortunately it comes with health problems. Albino Lab Health Albino Labs can suffer from sensitive skin. This is an issue that leaves them particularly vulnerable to sun and heat damage. Not only can an albino Lab be easily sunburnt, the sun can also damage his eyes. This vulnerability can make these dogs prone to tumors and skin cancer. Many Albino dogs are born blind, or suffer from eye deformities. Fortunately, a white Lab is almost always not actually an albino Lab. It is actually just a very pale version of a yellow Labrador. White Labrador Retrievers will have pigmented noses and dark eyes, as well as distinctive white fur. Their fur will almost always contain touches of cream or yellow, especially around the ears. A white Lab puppy will often have yellow ears. Finding a White Labrador Puppy White Lab puppies will come from parents who have the genes for yellow coat color, and who have been selectively bred to have the palest version of this color. In a litter of puppies the shades of color can range just as dramatically as they do in adulthood. Some pups can look far more orange and others will be at the paler end. Puppy coats will also change color as they grow. So white Lab puppies may appear more or less pale when they mature. Even if you love white Labradors, remember that the most important thing about a puppy is their personality and their health. As with any puppy search, the way to find a white Lab puppy is to look for a litter of Labradors bred in a way that is appropriate for the breed. White Labrador Retriever Breeders If white Lab puppies appeal to you, then make sure that the breeder has not focused on color to the detriment of health or temperament. Color should always be a secondary consideration when breeding a litter or choosing your puppy. First make sure that all of the other boxes are ticked, and that you are happy with your breeder. Make sure both parents are fully health tested. For Labradors this will mean low hip and elbow scores, and clear eye tests as a minimum. Think of the Type of Labrador If you want a pup to show in the ring, then go to an established show breeder who will be able to help you select the best pup for your purpose. If you are looking for a family pet, make sure both parents are treasured members of the family too. When buying any Labrador puppy, making sure the breeder is a good breeder is key. Here is some more information on how to find a good breeder, for any color of Labrador. The main ones which Labrador owners deal with are regarding potty training and biting. You can find lots of information on dealing with both of these common issues in our extensive Puppies Section. Bringing a new puppy home is a big decision. If you have any doubts about whether you are ready for a Labrador check out this article to help make the right choice. How much does a white Lab puppy cost? A white Lab puppy is a yellow Lab puppy with an exceptionally pale coat. Ultra pale coats are usually most associated with English breeding lines, which means they are likely to have distinctive personalities too. This white Lab pup has a sweet and sociable nature which is typical of the Labrador breed. Do white Labrador Retriever puppies exist? White is not an officially recognized standard color for Labrador Retrievers. So clearly puppies exist which breeders feel confident describing as white Labs. And prospective owners agree enough to part with some pretty large sums of cash. But what is actually being sold? The answer is very pale yellow Labrador puppies. Yellow is one of the three standard colors for Labrador Retrievers. Their fur color is caused by low concentrations of a reddish pigment called pheomelanin in their fur. Some make a lot, and their fur is a rich fox red color. Others produce so little that they can even be described as white. This variation is a natural and accepted part of the Labrador breed. Champagne white Lab pups — dilute yellow coats Another way a yellow Lab can have an exceptionally pale coat is if they inherit the color dilution gene from their parents. Puppies who inherit the color dilution gene from both parents have their ability to make coat pigments suppressed. Yellow Labs with color dilution are known as champagne Labs, but their exact color depends upon how much pheomelanin they would have produced otherwise. Dilute fox red coats are still darker than dilute golden yellow coats, and so on. Color dilution has a controversial status in the Labrador breed. Other breeders insist that it must have been introduced later — probably by crossing Labs with Weimaraners. Non-dilute yellow coats can also be so pale they appear as white. Is a white Lab puppy albino? Albinism is the complete inability to make any pigment at all, anywhere in the body. This means albino dogs have white fur, and pink eyes, nose, eye rims, lips and paw pads. Albinism is unheard of in Labradors, and white Labradors usually have a black nose, eye rims, lips and paw pads. When you meet a litter of fluffy white Lab puppies, can you be sure they will stay white all the way into adulthood? Alas, not really. Labradors are born with a puppy coat which is softer and finer than their adult coat. Their adult coat starts to come through from about 6 months of age. This change in texture can make the color catch the light differently too. Realistically, most white Labs do have some subtle shading in their coat, like Banjo above, and the gorgeous puppy in our pictures. What will an adult white Labrador puppy look like? Very pale yellow coats are most associated with English Labrador breeding lines. Also known as show or bench-type Labs, these dogs are bred to match as closely as possible the physical ideal for Labrador Retrievers, as described by their breed standard. By contrast, American Labs also known as working or field-type are breeding lines noted for their working ability. English Labs tend to be fractionally shorter and heavier than American Labs, which means they look broader and more heavy set too. Do white Lab puppies have special temperaments? Like all Labs, a white Lab puppy is likely to be energetic, people-focussed, and love physical activity. At the time of writing, there is no evidence that having a white coat is directly responsible for any specific personality traits in Labradors. But, being of English type which they are likely to be does have a well-recognized effect on their personality. Specifically, working ability is not a priority for English type Lab breeders. But patience and tolerance for spending long days in convention centers, awaiting their moment on the show bench, is. So, English Labs tend to be slightly less demanding in terms of how much mental stimulation they need, and a bit more laid back. English Labs also achieve slightly lower scores for trainability in behavior studies. But they are still extremely intelligent — the difference is only likely to be significant for Lab owners aspiring to take part in competitive field trials at a high level. Are white Labrador puppies healthy? White Labrador puppy health is comparable to yellow Lab health. They usually live for between 10 and 14 years. Their overall average life expectancy is 12 years, and most long lived dogs reach about 16 years old. This is comparable to black Labs, and slightly higher than for chocolate Labs. Over the course of their lifetime, Labradors are most likely to need veterinary treatment for: Hip dysplasia. The Earliest Records of White Labrador Retrievers in History Labradors have been around since the breed began being developed in Newfoundland in the 16th century. Although the coat is beautiful, it can be difficult to achieve by accident, so it took many years of selective breeding to establish lines of white Labs. There are only a few breeders who are breeding for this color, and even fewer of them are responsible breeders who practice good breeding practices with health-tested dogs. They are considered to be a pale yellow coloration, not a true white. In most cases, white Labs have yellow or cream coloration around the face and ears. They should have pigment in their eyes and noses, though, much like yellow Labs do. While the white color falls under the yellow color umbrella, it is entirely different from albinism. Albino dogs lack pigment, even in the eyes and nose, and they are not accepted under the breed standard of Labradors. White labs are essentially dilute yellow Labs. In fact, many of them will take on yellow or cream coloration, especially after spending a lot of time in the sun. White is more common in English Labs than in American Labs Although they are the same breed, English Labs are typically considered to be more show worthy, while American Labs are prized as working dogs. English Labs tend to be stockier but lighter than their taller, heavier American counterparts. White coloration in Labs comes from a recessive gene Both parents of a white Lab must have the genes that allow for white coloration to occur. Their coat is the same type as other Lab colors Although their colors differ, white Labs still have the short double coat that other Labs have. This means they tend to be big shedders, with some anecdotal evidence that white Labs may shed a little more than other colors do. White puppies may not stay white Often, puppies are lighter at birth than they will be once they start growing. Labradors as a whole are a fantastic dog breed, which is easily proven by how popular this breed has remained for decades. These are intelligent and personable dogs known for their love of people and gentle nature. They tend to be good with children, and many people prize Labs for hunting and retrieving purposes. White Labs are just as athletic and healthy as their yellow, black, and chocolate counterparts. Even still, they are highly prized, even within the show world. They retain the desirable traits of other Labrador colors, like excellent temperament, intelligence, and trainability, but there are no known medical conditions associated with the white color. This means that your white Lab should be just as healthy as the other acceptable colors within the breed. They are athletic dogs that sport a beautiful double coat, making them appropriate for a variety of activities in a variety of environments. A white Labrador is a yellow Lab whose fur is so pale it appears white, or almost white. Their fur may not be entirely white, and could have darker accents. White Labradors should have the same general temperament and health as any other color Labrador. Do you think the white Labrador is a beautiful dog that could be a good companion for you? There are things you will want to know, though. Is this dog an albino Labrador? They will have dark eyes and noses and a distinctive white fur. The fur may not be completely white, though. Often the fur features accents of cream or yellow, especially at the ears. A white Labrador is not a separate Lab breed. Labrador Retriever History Labrador Retrievers are a popular dog breed whose ancestors started out as fishing dogs in Newfoundland. They retrieved ducks for their owners. There are actually no indigenous dogs in Newfoudland. These Canadian duck dogs probably originated from English water dog breeds. Eventually, British breeders discovered them as they were imported back to England. The second Earl of Malmesbury and his son called them Labrador dogs. Original Labrador Colors Originally, Labs were predominantly black. Black is one of three colors that naturally shows up in Labrador puppies. Black, yellow, and brown are the others. Of course, within those three colors, there are many shades. The white Labrador is one of them! But there are others, like the silver Lab! Albinos lack all pigment. Albino dogs have red eyes and noses, whereas white Labrador Retrievers have dark pigment in those areas. Each dog gets two alleles to create its appearance. What Else do These Genes Control? For example, in yellow Labs, other pigmentation can occur on the nose, lips, gums, feet, tail, and eye rims. Separate genes also control the intensity of the black color on the nose. This is independent of that which governs the fur. In some Labs, the black color of the nose actually fades over time. Sometimes, a yellow Labrador will have no pigment in the nose, eye rims, and feet. They look pink! These dogs are called Dudley Labs. How to get White Labradors Two yellow Labradors, if mated, will always have yellow puppies. Otherwise, the dog would not be yellow. So, a white Labrador will be the result of two yellow Labradors being bred together. Shades of yellow range all the way from light cream to a fox red, which is the darkest one you can get on a Lab. Health of the White Labrador Retriever Labradors are generally fairly healthy dogs. But, they can be predisposed to a variety of inherited conditions. White Labradors, unless they are true albinos, should have the same health prospects as any Labrador Retriever. Albinos suffer from additional health problems, including a higher risk of cancer and visual defects. General Labrador Health and Lifespan Labradors generally live years. Their general health is affected by exercise, environment, and diet, so the care you give them is important. Labs are prone to obesity. Puppy Tantrums: How To Deal With Them February 5, Picture this: you are at the park with your dog, and there are countless people and dogs around. Everything is an apparent frenzy of activity, and even you are having some trouble keeping up. If this is your experience, just imagine how your puppy might be feeling. After all, they were only just born in the past few months. They have much less experience with processing outside stimuli and regulating their emotions. As a result of this constant activity, you notice that your puppy is beginning to act a little strange. They are not listening, and perhaps they begin to growl and bark even when there is nothing threatening around at all. You can sense and watch the frustration coming off of them in droves. Luckily, we have tips on how you can handle them while also making them less likely to occur in the future. How could something as incredibly cute as a puppy be so upset over basically nothing? And, possibly even more importantly, what can you do to stop this from happening? After viewing your puppy seemingly flying off the handle at nothing at all, it is perfectly natural to wonder why puppies even experience temper tantrums at all. Much like how human children will feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, or just be frustrated with a situation, puppies can do the exact same thing. What Causes a Puppy Temper Tantrum? This is certainly an annoyance, but it does not mean that you and your dog cannot still go about your day exactly as planned. Some other reasons that your puppy might feel especially frustrated include that they are overly tired, they are overstimulated, or they have previously learned that tantrums get them what they want. We will discuss all of these possibilities in more depth a bit later in this article. What Are the Signs of a Puppy Tantrum? In some cases, it might be completely crystal clear to a pet parent that their puppy is currently experiencing and throwing a temper tantrum. That being said, if you have never seen one before, you might be a bit confused at first regarding what you are seeing. Here are some of the most common signs that can help you identify when a puppy is throwing a tantrum. Refusal To Listen If your usually obedient and eager to please puppy is suddenly not listening to a word you say, it does not mean something is wrong with them. Well, other than the fact that they are in the midst of a tantrum. This is often one of the first indications that a dog is getting overstimulated and frustrated, but you might still be able to avoid a full meltdown at this stage. Barking or Growling A clearly identifiable sign of a puppy temper tantrum is when they begin to bark and growl. They do this to express some kind of displeasure over what they are currently experiencing. This behavior might strike you as especially strange considering that there is likely nothing in particular that you think they should be barking and growling at. Nipping or Biting When your dog is especially frustrated, they might show those unpleasant emotions by nipping or biting you and their surroundings. If this is an issue for your puppy, it is possible that this will go beyond just a nip, will actually become uncomfortable or destructive, and you may feel that you might need additional help. In that case, do not hesitate to reach out to a trained professional who regularly deals with this kind of misbehavior in dogs. The moment that you recognize the classic signs of a puppy temper tantrum, your immediate reaction is undoubtedly going to be to try and stop it. However, many people are surprised to find out that some of your first instincts might actually be harmful rather than helpful. It is important to do your research on how to react to a puppy tantrum ahead of time before they happen. This way, you can be completely prepared to deal with them appropriately rather than acting in a way that could make them worse going forward. Let Your Puppy Cry It Out This tip can be difficult to achieve for a number of reasons, but it is very important that you sometimes let the tantrum simply run its course. If you do not let your dog cry it out and instead try to cater to their needs in one way or another, you are showing them that this behavior gets them exactly what they want. If they interpret the situation that way, they will continue to throw temper tantrums often and freely in the future, because they know it works. It is never fun to see your puppy upset, even if you know full well that this overreaction is in no way justified. Although it is tempting to attempt to soothe your puppy in these times of stress, it is best to let them learn self-soothing mechanisms. Not only will this show them that throwing a tantrum gets them absolutely nowhere, but they will be much better at regulating their emotions in the future. If you are at the park or in another public place and your puppy starts to have a tantrum, this can be somewhat embarrassing. However, any other current or former puppy parents will know full well that this is just an unfortunate part of the process. It does not reflect poorly on the pet parent or the pet, this is just how puppies sometimes express their frustrations. Do Not Adjust Your Behavior While it might be tempting to change what you were doing and adjust your behavior, it is crucial that you do not do so. In most cases of a puppy temper tantrum, you were simply doing something or asking your dog to do something that they do not like. This could be going on a leash, going inside, or any number of other triggers. If this is something that your dog needs to do, they cannot learn that a tantrum will sufficiently stop it from happening. In this situation, make sure to remain completely calm, no matter how frustrated you may be. Even if you possibly feel like throwing a bit of a temper tantrum yourself, it is crucial that you resist that urge. Even when your dog is overwhelmed, they can still mimic and mirror your behavior. If they see and perceive you as being cool, calm, and collected, they are much more likely to do the same thing. Similarly, if they see you clearly uncomfortable or panicking, they will quite possibly do the same. Hold Them Steady It is possible that your puppy was experiencing a tantrum as a result of you holding them in the first place. However, this can still be a calming and distracting tactic to take while they are in the midst of an episode. Be sure to hold them firmly, but never harshly. They should be unable to move or wiggle too much, and certainly unable to escape your hold. However, this handling should never be painful or uncomfortable for your dog. After you have your puppy in an appropriate hold, it might take them a little while still to settle down. Let them whine and cry it out as you keep holding them. In a few seconds to a few minutes, they should reach a much more tranquil state. Give Your Puppy a Familiar Command To Distract Them When your puppy is deep in the throes of a temper tantrum, it is likely that they are so overwhelmed with feeling and stimulation that they are not thinking particularly rationally. Well, as much as a puppy will ever think rationally, that is. In order to snap them out of this spiral, giving them a well-known command is an excellent way to help them to focus. Simply clearly state the command and use any accompanying hand movements that your puppy has learned to go along with it. Once your dog registers this cue even through the fog of a tantrum currently in progress, they should still listen and perform the action. Once they have done what you asked, they will be in a clearer frame of mind, and more able to process incoming stimuli. As far as preventing puppy temper tantrums goes, it is possible to do to an extent. While it is never possible to eliminate the possibility of a tantrum occurring, there are some steps you can take to make this possibility much less likely. By following these tips, you will have to use the suggestions to stop a puppy tantrum much less often. Do Not Indulge Their Previous Tantrums As we mentioned previously, sometimes you just need to let your puppy cry it out. This is not an enjoyable process for either you or your puppy, but this teaches them that this behavior does not accomplish what they want. Once they learn this tough lesson, their incentive to act out in this way in the future will be greatly diminished. Eventually, once they learn better emotional regulation skills, they will likely stop having these kinds of episodes entirely. Make Sure That They Get Enough Sleep Similar to tantrums thrown by human children, being tired is a common cause of frustration in puppies. This reason might seem overly simple, but it is true. If your dog is feeling especially tired, they are going to be much more prone to bouts of frustration and being overwhelmed. The remedy for this particular issue is a fairly easy one: make sure that your dog is getting enough high-quality rest. Puppies often need between 18 and 20 hours of sleep per day, so they will need to be left undisturbed for prolonged periods of time. Resist the urge to cuddle, play with them, or generally bother them as they are sleeping. They are using that time to fuel their growth, which is a constant during puppyhood. Do not worry, there will absolutely be plenty of moments of boundless puppy energy soon after they wake up on their own. If your dog is having trouble getting this amount of sleep, or cannot find an area of the house that is quiet or where they feel comfortable enough to get some rest, you have options. It might be time to look into getting your puppy a cozy crate for them to call their own. You can make this space wonderfully comfortable for them by including a memory foam mattress pad where they can rest their weary head after a long day of playing. If that was not already enough to get your dog ready for bed, try tossing in some soft blankets and their favorite toys as well. If you do not think your puppy is getting enough sleep, then it might be time to call their veterinarian. Do Not Put Them in Unnecessary Over Stimulating Situations Many of the situations in which a puppy is experiencing a temper tantrum are necessary for you and them to go about the day. Some dogs have difficulty with leashes at first that could prompt a tantrum, or perhaps they do not like being held. This does not mean that their walk will suddenly stop, or you will no longer need to carry them from point A to point B. In those scenarios, it is best to let your dog just experience what they are feeling and eventually calm down. However, if you realize that your dog is regularly triggered into a tantrum in situations that they do not need to be in, it might be best to avoid those in the future. Make Sure That You Keep Calm As we referenced earlier, it is incredibly important that you keep calm around your dog whenever possible. In many ways, your puppy will determine how they should be acting based on your demeanor. If they regularly see you acting calmly, it is much more likely that they will do the same. All of this is to say that dogs are capable of picking up on so much more than we regularly realize. Rather than just acting calm, try your best to truly be calm. Keep Calm and Puppy On There are so many reasons that we all love our puppies. They are beyond adorable, their boundless energy is enviable, and they bring so much joy into our lives. While all of that is absolutely true, there are also some situations in which raising a puppy can be a bit less than perfect, to say the least. Yes, bathroom accidents are unpleasant to deal with, but puppy temper tantrums reign supreme when it comes to frustrations caused by our dogs.
