They are also there to help new owners get prepared for bringing a new puppy home and to know what to expect from the first couple of weeks. This rescue has a fairly straightforward adoption process. Once the staff reviews your application, they will contact you to set up a home visit. Like all other non-profit rescue organizations, the New York State Retriever Rescue has set adoption fees. All golden retrievers that come in New York State Retriever Rescue are evaluated and taken to their vets for a complete health exam. Before leaving for their forever home, all dogs receive the necessary shots and have fecal and heartworm tests. And if for whatever reason you can suddenly no longer care for your adopted golden, this rescue will take the dog back and try to find it another home. Bear in mind, since they are located in Long Island, this organization generally only adopts their dogs in a mile radius. Some exceptions may be made in special situations. Dog Ratings The Level 1 dog is an easy dog with typically low energy level and has no behavioral issues. This level of dog would do well in virtually any home regardless of owner experience. Level 2 has energy that can range from low to high. This level may have other minor issues that are easy to address. Level 3 dogs typically have a challenging behavior, but are good dogs. These dogs might have an intense focus to work, be dog reactive or dog aggressive, may have to be an only animal in the home, or may require daily physical and mental stimulation, etc. This level of dog is not an average pet. Our dogs are placed into the best homes for them based upon their individual needs and personalities. While the time it takes to be matched with a dog varies, with some applicants being matched very quickly and others experiencing a more lengthy wait, it all depends on your personal circumstances and flexibility. Homes with children, other dogs, cats, or very specific requirements will generally experience the longest waiting times to find a compatible YGRR dog. Adopter Eligibility Requirements In the interests of making the best adoption matches possible, an interested Applicant should meet the following criteria please read in full : Demonstrate an ability and commitment to provide proper care, exercise and training for the lifetime of a large dog. Be over 18 years of age. Provide a fenced-in area large enough to safely exercise the dog. Fencing must be physical not electronic or invisible and at least four feet high. Applicants who do not meet the fence requirement may request a fencing exemption, and appropriate dogs may be placed in homes with no fence. Please note: YGRR does not consider electric, invisible, or underground fencing to be a physical fence, and the majority of our dogs are not good candidates for underground containment systems. Please note that if you intend to use electric fencing with a dog you adopt from us we will not proceed with your application. Commit to keeping the YGRR dog inside only when nobody is home homes with dog doors are ineligible. The home must not provide daycare human or canine or be a residential facility nursing home, assisted living facilities, etc. Applicant must reapply if they have not adopted within one year of approval. The bulldog's purpose originally was to catch and hold bulls for butchers, and specimens were ferocious. Today's bulldogs lack the strength or endurance to hold onto a bull's nose the way their forebears did, nor do they have the temperament for it. Modern bulldogs are quite gentle. AKC standards for bulldogs are rigorous. Head and Shoulder Standards The English bulldog is bred to have wide shoulders as well as a wide head. The shoulders should have a lot of loose folds of skin. The ears are set far back on the skull and ideally should have folds that show the undersides of the ears as they curl forward over the wrinkled forehead. The big head needs to be at least as large in circumference as the length of the forelegs to the shoulder. Face and Neck Standards A champion English bulldog has a lower jaw that juts out further than the top jaw, creating a pronounced underbite, and there is a thick fold of skin over the dog's short nose, known as a rope. The eyes should be positioned low on the front of the face, but far apart, and should be round in shape with dark irises. The neck is short, muscular and thick, with wrinkles and hanging dewlaps. Back, Body and Tail Standards The bulldog's back should be well-rounded, with the hips widely spaced and set higher than the shoulders. The belly should be concave, and the chest rounded and well-muscled. There should be plenty of wrinkles along the length of the back, with the largest being located over the shoulder area. The short tail should ideally be set low on the rump and should be either straight or tightly coiled but not curly or long. Forequarter Standards The front legs should be short and only slightly bowed. The paws should either face straight forward or point slightly outward, and all of the claws should be naturally short. The legs have a lot of loose skin that resemble baggy hose, and the toes should be proportioned to the size of the forelegs, and not too large or too small. The chest should be wide and round, with many sagging wrinkles and two dewlaps. Hindquarters Standards The hind legs should be muscular, widely spaced and slightly longer than the front legs to make the hips rise above the shoulders, with the toes pointing outward. There are fewer wrinkles on the hind legs, but they are still present on the foot area, making it look like the dog's socks have fallen down. The rump should be high, round and somewhat smoother than the rest of the animal's skin. Coat and Skin Standards The coat of the English bulldog grows short, fine and close to the skin. It should be glossy in appearance. Long hair is undesirable in this breed, and so is curly hair. The most desirable coat color is red brindle, which is a brownish-red shade with darker patches mixed in. Other brindle shades are the second most desirable, followed by solid white, solid red, fawn and piebald. The skin should be soft, loose and draped in thick wrinkles. Weight and Disposition Standards The male bulldog should weigh a solid 50 pounds, and the female should weigh 40 pounds. Bulldogs should be gentle, sweet and nonaggressive. Bulldogs are friendly and patient, and are known for getting along with children as well as other dogs or other pets. These dogs are loyal and attached to their families, usually refusing to go anywhere without their people. Bulldogs consider themselves lap dogs and are cuddly in nature. These adorable pups come in handy sizes, and dole out ample amounts of love. They are English not French. The French bulldog has originated from England where they were first bred. The French Bulldog soon gained popularity among the elites and middle class of France, with many Parisians owning one as a lapdog. Eventually, the Americans bred them and gave them the now famous bat ear, a distinctive feature of Frenchies. This makes the French bulldog an international breed. Frenchies are emotional. Because they were bred as lovable lap dogs, Frenchies tend to emotional to a fault. Emotional in the sense they can become moody if you scold them for doing something wrong. Have you ever seen a dog make a face before? They smile, pout and even Frenchie talk to let you know how they feel. If you have a French bulldog, the best you can do is provide loads of positive encouragement as possible while reducing punishment and negative feedback. They are vocal. From howls, growls, gargles, yips to yawns, these lovely animals are talkative and will always have something to contribute to family discussions. They will sink in water. While many dog breeds love frolicking in water, the Frenchie is an exception because it is a brachycephalic dog. Brachy dog breeds have a big head and a short skull with tight nostrils that make respiration difficult, especially in water. Always keep them cool on a hot day to avoid obstruction of breathing. When he does this I see it as a sign of him being submissive so the other dog knows that he is safe and ready to play with. Sleeping close to you Some owners prefer to train their dogs to sleep on the floor or even in another room, but if your Frenchie is trying to join you on the bed or prefers sleeping in your room, this is another massive indicator that they love you. You know a French Bulldog loves you when they want to get up close and personal and fall asleep with you. As an extension of this, being able to nod off easily around you and going out of their way to sleep near you means they not only trust you and view you as someone safe, but it also shows that they view you as family. Sighing Although French Bulldogs do not bark much and make perfect pets for people who live in apartment complexes because of how quiet they are, Frenchies are nonetheless notoriously vocal, and will have a wide assortment of unique sounds that will give you some indication of how they feel. Everyone loves a true Christmas surprise. And that is exactly what my husband and I had planned this year. A surprise puppy is what we had up our sleeves! We lost our Golden, Cooper, almost 2 years prior at age .He was the best dog! We had him before our boys were born, so they never knew a life without Cooper around. To say it was a hard thing to lose him is an understatement, as anyone who has had a pet knows. We spent the past couple years talking about it, but every time our boys would ask we would put them off and tell them not just yet. That was all part of our little plan to throw them off! But, we decided we were ready and we decided our surprise puppy would be another Golden Retriever. Research, research and more research…and we finally found a litter and went behind our boys backs and picked out our pup. We were going to pick her up on Christmas eve and surprise them Christmas morning. You know, the thing I have always dreamed about happening. We were crushed and heartbroken, but we also knew that we had to keep looking and try again. The good news is that we found another litter, but they were ready to go right then. When they woke up that morning, Elfie our elf had left them a note…. They got ready, and we put the gifts under the tree… Each boy had a box with a dog bowl and one had a collar and one had a toy. Tips and Guidance for Leaving Your Goldendoodle Alone There are a few things that you can do to make leaving your Goldendoodle alone a little easier for both of you: 1. As I mentioned in this article before, there are a lot of COVID puppies who haven't had a chance to experience being left alone yet. Start with short periods of time while you're home. First, just go to another room and come back. Then go to another room, close the door, make some noise and come back. Work up the time to the first 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, 20 minutes and so on. When your puppy is comfortable with you being in another room and doesn't whine, start leaving the house for short periods of time. First, just step outside and come back in. Then step outside, close the door and come back in. Desensitize them to the sound of the door closing. You want to make it as uneventful as possible. Don't say goodbye to your puppy or make a big deal out of it when you arrive back. Work up the time you're gone to first 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 10 minutes and so on. Once you reach the minute threshold, you can step it up to an hour and then a few hours. It's important that you do this daily so your puppy gets used to it and knows that you will always come back. Tire Your Dog Out A tired dog is a good dog. This is especially true for puppies. You want to make sure that your puppy is tuckered out before you leave them alone. This way, they're more likely to take a nap while you're gone. Dogs need to tire out physically and mentally before you leave the house to make sure they don't get too anxious. For the physical part, take them on a long walk or run. For the mental part, you can do training with a clicker that makes them think. For example, place two bottles on the floor and only give them a treat and a click once they touched the right one. You can easily tire out a dog mentally in mins with this kind of exercise. Just act like it's any other day and you're going to work or run errands. The same goes for when you come back home. Don't greet your puppy right away or make too much of a fuss about it. Just simply walk in, put your things down, wait a few minutes until they calm down and then you can greet them. What happens when you make a big scene when you leave is like you are winding up a toy. Your dog gets more and more excited and anxious and the second you leave, that is when they blow up. Just think about it, in their natural environment, would their mother make a big scene when she leaves them? No, she would just leave. Do the same! I know it's hard, I always want to cuddle Bailey when I leave, but it's better for him to just stay calm. Create a Calm and Safe Environment When you're leaving your puppy alone, you want to make sure that they're in a calm and safe environment. One good trick I do is turn on the radio and the TV so there's some noise in the background. This way, it doesn't feel so quiet and empty for Bailey when I leave. Also, make sure their cage is open so they can go in and out if you don't want them to stay there while you are gone. Also, leave a few toys around for them that they can chew on. When I got my Miniature Goldendoodle three years ago, I was working a full-time job. So, even though it was heartbreaking for me, I had to leave my pup alone for eight hours. Instead, a friend of mine suggested getting a playpen. I went online and ordered a dog playpen from amazon. Playpens are a safe place to leave your dog unsupervised for a longer period of time. I use the playpen every time I have some work around the house, or when I go to work. However, you should start slowly, maybe leave your dog for an hour at first. My daughter pulled up a chair. Today, the program serves about students a month at city hospital sites and virtually. The program provides students with the kind of coursework they would be receiving if they were at school and helps them transition back to the classroom or at-home learning after their hospital stay. On a typical school day, Miss Anne Marie would welcome children who had come to the hospital for chemotherapy, radiation, scans, or follow-up visits. Every single one of her students needed accommodations, and she rarely saw the same children every day. There is room at the table for them and a comforting routine.
