The female may even need a cesarean since the pups may be too big for her to deliver naturally. As with most mixes, a German shepherd mixed chihuahua is going to inherit traits from both parents. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal and protective of their owners. They are also intelligent and quick to learn tricks. While they can be independent, they also enjoy spending time with their people and being a part of the family. Chihuahuas are active dogs, and they need daily exercise to stay healthy. They are also good watchdogs, as they will bark to alert their owners to any strangers who come near. If you are looking for a small but mighty companion, a Chihuahua might be the perfect dog for you. German Shepherd The German Shepherd is a popular breed that is known for its loyalty and intelligence. The breed originated in Germany, where it was used as a working dog on farms and in law enforcement. German Shepherds are large dogs, with males averaging about 30 inches tall and females averaging about 28 inches tall. They have a muscular build and a thick coat of fur that can be either black, brown, or tan in color. German Shepherds are intelligent and easy to train, making them excellent pets for families with children. They are also loyal and protective, making them good guard dogs. However, German Shepherds can be aggressive if not properly trained, so it is important to socialize them from an early age. This is due to the fact that these two breeds are very different in size and therefore can't mate naturally. The process of breeding them would involve artificial insemination, which is complicated and expensive. When making a hybrid between two different dog breeds, it is important to consider the size difference. In general, the female should be of the larger breed, as she needs to have the capacity to carry the litter. This is particularly important when there is a noticeable size difference between the two breeds, as is the case with a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd. The German Shepherd is typically nearly twice the size of a Chihuahua, meaning that the Chihuahua simply doesn't have the ability to carry a litter of German Shepherd hybrids. As a result, breeders need to be sure to use a German Shepherd female when creating this particular mix. The German Shepherd Chihuahua mix is not recognized by the A. Shep-Chi Appearance The resulting offspring will inherit a random selection of characteristics from both parents. This means that it is impossible to predict exactly how a Chihuahua German Shepherd mix will look. However, there are some general trends that can be observed in most cases. For instance, a German shepherd Chihuahua mix will typically be larger than a pure Chihuahua but way bigger than a German shepherd. German Shepherd Chihuahua mixes are a mix of two very different-looking breeds, so they can take on the physical characteristics of either parent. They can have short or long coats that are either straight or wavy. They can be any color, but the most common colors are black and tan, black and white, chocolate and white, or blue and tan. Shepchi dogs are usually between 8 and 60 pounds, and they stand 8 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. They have long faces with triangular ears, and their tails can be long or short. They are very loyal and protective of their family and make great guard dogs. They are also intelligent and easily trained. However, they can be very stubborn and willful at times. They need firm, consistent training and socialization from an early age to prevent behavioral problems from developing. The Chihuahua German Shepherd mix is a versatile dog that can do well in a variety of homes, as long as adequate exercise and training are provided. A post shared by Dogs Humans Luv dogshumansluv Shep-Chi and other pets When it comes to getting along with other pets, it really depends on the individual dog's personality. Some Chihuahua German Shepherd mixes are very social and enjoy being around other animals, while others may be more aloof or even aggressive. Generally speaking, however, Chihuahua German Shepherd mixes tend to get along well with other animals if they are introduced and socialized from a young age. It's important to remember that all dogs, regardless of breed, should be supervised around other animals until you are confident that they can play nice. And that can be very difficult to do. German Shepherd Chihuahua mixed breeds run the gamut on the entire personality spectrum. In essence, your training will be the key to molding your pup into a desirable dog. However, there are still inherited traits that will have a major effect on how your mixed pup will behave. Also, this breed is a very strange occurrence even in nature. So, the probability of this breed being conceived is very low. However, due to their size and temperament, the German Shepherd was quickly trained by the military and law enforcement to be a working dog. Every single one of these dogs is completely unique. Each pup will inherit traits from both parent lineages, and some exhibit more traits from one parent than the other. For example, a hybrid leaning more towards the German Shepherd side may be more apt to follow commands and remain calm under pressure. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The Chihuahua genetics will ensure that your pupper has a thin first layer; this will give them an easy to care for coat. There are some genetic issues that you may or may not have to deal with. Some issues are relatively easy to avoid with a healthy diet and good lifestyle habits like regular exercise and vet check-ups. The Chihuahua is usually prone to heart conditions like patent ductus arteriosus or mitral valve disease. You may also want to consider adding supplements to their diet to help with their joints and bones. Exercise Regime for German Shepherd Chihuahua As you may have guessed, there is no set number for the required exercise. This is because the German Shepherd is a pretty big and busy dog with lots of energy. A rule of thumb is to cap them off at around 30 to 45 minutes daily. Start your pup off by going on a five-minute walk. Start with five minutes and incrementally increase their exercise time until you can gauge just how much walking and playing your canine friend can take. Be sure not to over-exert them, as their bodies are not always made to become the next Rocky Balboa. They can eat a bit too much too fast, so also try to monitor their eating. Are you ready to pay exorbitant prices for a dog? Are you buying from a reputable breeder? For this reason, it may be best to just leave them in the apartment with adults and smaller, less traditional-style families. But, the German Shepherd Chihuahua would not enjoy a family with younger kids as their bodies, limbs, and hearts are a little bit more fragile than most. They need a certain amount of exercise and stimulation to keep them happy. Your neighbors may begin to complain if your pupper keeps yapping all day or decides to bark incessantly at the wind moving the curtains. Because this animal is a mixed breed, the results are highly variable. The puppy could look more like a German Shepherd , a Chihuahua or anywhere in between. And the same can be said for their personality! This is a relatively new mixed breed. But the German Shepherd and Chihuahua have distant origins that may bring insight into what traits these dogs could have after being bred together. The modern German Shepherd breed dates all the way back to a single German dog by the name of Horand von Grafrath. After numerous failed attempts to standardize Shepherd breeds in Germany. Horand was then selectively bred with three other dogs, whose offspring were inbred to preserve desirable and necessary traits within the breed. It is clear that Chihuahuas have origins in Mexico. Genetic testing has revealed that much of the pre-European genes are no longer present due to European colonization. But there is still a great deal of speculation on the true origins of the Chihuahua. Controversy On Crossbred Dogs Crossbreeding dogs can become a touchy topic because there is some controversy around the quality of their offspring. Some believe that a quality dog comes from a pedigree, while others think that crossbreeding is better for the offspring. Purebred dogs typically have limited genes due to a genetic bottleneck created by extensive inbreeding. After all, if you want a dog to have a particular set of traits, you are going to breed very similar dogs together. This can lead to severe health problems typical for the specific breed. Genetic disorders and vulnerabilities become more common. Crossbred dogs are typically much healthier due to hybrid vigor , or heterosis, a much more diverse and less bottlenecked gene pool. Larger than a Chihuahua but smaller than a German Shepherd, this mix can be a small to medium dog. But, of course, other patterns and fur colors are possible too. These dogs will likely have short hair, which sheds lightly. But they could also have slightly longer fur, depending on the coat of their Chihuahua parent. They might have two layers to their coat or one, depending mostly on the Chihuahua parent. Chihuahuas have a soft spot on their heads, like a human baby, that may or may not go away over time. This dog will weigh between eight to 60 pounds. The height of this mixed breed will likely be between seven to 45 inches at the shoulder. However, due to unpredictable genetics from mixed breeds, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix temperament can vary widely. Luckily though, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is also intelligent. They can pick up on many commands and train easily—when they want to. For the smaller dogs of this hybrid breed, potty training can be a problem. They have tiny bladders, which means they have to go a lot. This can make training difficult. You should plan on at least a couple of medium-length walks a day and outdoor playtime if possible. A fenced-in yard can be very helpful to help this breed get the exercise it needs. These dogs can dislocate both their kneecaps and hips easier than others. For this reason, it is always important to keep an eye on them, especially when they are exercising. However, they are still prone to a few health problems, including obesity. The Chihuahua is prone to a disorder known as floating kneecap or patellar luxation. This disorder takes place when the kneecap becomes dislocated. Patellar luxation mainly affects older, smaller dogs. Hip dysplasia is also a concern. German Shepherds are very prone to the latter disease. Ethical breeders should test all German Shepherds before breeding them to ensure that they do not pass on hip problems to their offspring. These dogs are also prone to a few heart problems, including congenital heart defect. This is a severe, genetic disease that puppies are born with. These dogs can live anywhere from nine to 20 years. It just depends on the traits they inherit and if they are prone to any severe diseases. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mixes should not have any extreme grooming requirements. Brushing a few times a week and clipping their nails regularly is all that is required. As a small- to medium-sized dog, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is ideal for families living in smaller homes. But it is also vital that they have enough room outside to meet their exercise requirements. German Shepherds make decent family dogs due to their loyalty and territorial tendencies. But they have been known to become hostile to young children. Children have been known to accidentally injuring Chihuahuas due to their size. As a result, this mixed breed can obtain any or all of these qualities. These dogs are not recommended for families with small children. This means that they could inherit the best qualities of both parents or the worst. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix dogs can be very aggressive. They are known to guard territory with ferocity, and can generally be hostile animals if not trained or socialized correctly. However, at their best, they can be intelligent, loyal, independent animals that have the sense to serve. If you have small children, we would recommend looking at Labradors or Golden Retrievers. This became the focal point of GSDs in Europe, where they quickly gained popularity as hunting companions and herding dogs over the next century. They also had roles as guard dogs and war dogs during the Second World War and in police forces across Europe. They were exported to the United States in and were first recognized by the American Kennel Club in .The German Shepherd has been a popular family pet, police dog and had roles in the military seemingly ever since they arrived in the U. Despite being from a historically well-trained dog lineage, many GSDs benefit from obedience training, including positive reinforcement and reward-based training methods. German Shepherds need daily exercise to stay healthy and relieve conditions like hip dysplasia. Before adopting or purchasing a German Shepherd, please ensure you can provide for their daily exercise needs. A family home with a house and yard, or easy access to a dog park, would suit your GSD best. The German Shepherd was first bred from a dog named Hektor Linkshrein, bought at a dog by Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer who had been searching for a herding and guard dog for his property. Linkshrein was, to von Stephanitz, the perfect dog! He renamed him Horand von Grafath and began breeding him with other German hunting dogs to produce the modern-day German Shepherd. Crossbreeding of the German Shepherd began in earnest in the late s and early s. They are most commonly crossbred with dogs that are of similar size to them, like the Labrador Retriever. The Toltec Peoples kept a small, mute dog known as a Techichi that — according to hieroglyphs — bears striking physical resemblance to the modern-day Chihuahua. The history of the Chihuahua, despite their lineage, is a bit of a mystery. They were next noted in the Mexican state of the same name in midth century and were frequently traded and sold to American tourists along the Mexican-American border. These dogs were among the first to be introduced to the United States in the lateth century. The Chihuahua was first recognized by the American Kennel Club in as a toy breed. In , they ranked as the 37th most-popular canine companion in the country, according to the American Kennel Club. Given their size, Chihuahuas are often popular pets among the elderly population. Their shrill bark and ease of transport makes them a popular choice for those living alone. However, for those living in apartments, the Chihuahua might not make the best pet — they have a tendency to suffer from separation anxiety and exhibit destructive behaviors as a result. How Did Chihuahuas Come About? However, we do know that they have an ancient lineage stretching back to the 9th century, when the Aztecs ruled South America. Since then, the ancient history of the Chihuahua has been lost to the sands of time. It would re-emerge again in the midth century, when the breed was first noted in the Mexican state of the same name. Chihuahuas were sold and traded with American tourists on the Mexican-American border and quickly became popular in the United States, being recognized by the American Kennel Club in .But in the United States, the Chihuahua was first crossbred with other dogs of similar size naturally at the end of the 20th century. A designer cross between a border collie and a standard poodle. Border collies are well known for their intelligence, loyalty, train-ability, and desire to please! Turn on your tv for 5 minutes and you will see a border collie featured in many of the commercials that pop up. Why the standard poodle? The original notion for crossing poodles with other breeds in general is the benefits of their curly non shedding coats, and the cute scruffy or teddy bear-like appearance they produce. But what many people don't realize is that the standard poodle is not the frufru, yippy, entitled breed you have imagined. They are actually the number 2 breed for intelligence after the border collie, and you will not find a more versatile or affectionate, companion! Combining these two breeds is a no-brainer, I'm amazed it has taken this long for this cross to gain popularity. He can also be a bit stubborn but overall a complete joy. He rings his bell to go out to potty, at only 17 weeks can sit, stay, go down, roll over, leave it when treats are placed on his paws very impressive for a little guy , shake a paw or high 5 and has the best and most entertaining personality. He loves people and from what little interaction he has had with other dogs, seems to love them as well. We couldn't be happier with our newest family member. We really enjoyed meeting all the dogs, especially Flower and Finn. Of course, we also enjoyed the chance to speak with you and your trainers Colton and Daniel. Mountain Rose exceeded our expectations. After getting to play with the dogs in person, learning more about your program and seeing for ourselves how the puppies are being raised, we are even more excited about getting a puppy from Mountain Rose. Our fingers are crossed that Flower comes into heat soon! We also enjoyed seeing the Bordoodles at your daughter's house. Jonathan was very accommodating in showing us all five Bordoodles. They were very excited and fun to meet. Thanks again for your hospitality. She originally had reservations about us buying a Bordoodle. She said that she was unfamiliar with this breed and cautioned us and even advised that we may wish to look at a "purebred" dog. We just wanted to share that with you. He has really fit into our family and it's so fun watching him learn our routine. He's made friends with lots of the neighborhood kids and is super friendly with everyone. I take him to puppy school once a week with our son Carter he's 9 because Carter was having some trouble being the "pack leader" when we first got Gussie, but the puppy school has been great and Gus lights up the second Carter gets off the school bus each day. I attached a couple of pictures for you to see how much he's grown! She's so smart that at 4 months old she can play dead when she is shot with a "bang", she can heal like nobody's business, and she sits like a lady waiting for us to open the door before she goes out or comes in. She gets her treats in her bowl after dinner. All in all she's pretty terrific. He is definitely part of our family and we love him so much. He's such a smart dog! I remember when we first got him, his color was black. You said he would likely lighten up. Here's what he looks like now. They are a crossbreed between the Border Collie and the Poodle, combining the intelligence and herding abilities of the Border Collie with the hypoallergenic coat and charming personality of the Poodle. The exact origin of Bordoodles is still being determined, as with most designer dog breeds. They are believed to have been first intentionally bred in the late 20th century, primarily in Australia and the United States. Breeders aimed to create a dog with the desirable traits of both parent breeds, such as intelligence, trainability, athleticism, and a low-shedding coat. Bordoodle Generations Over time, different generations of Bordoodles have been developed, each with its own set of characteristics and traits. Since both parent breeds are distinctly different, the puppies from this cross exhibit a wide range of traits in appearance and temperament. They may inherit more characteristics from one parent breed over the other or display a balanced blend of features from both breeds. Breeders often backcross with a Poodle to increase hypoallergenic qualities and reinforce herding abilities. F1b Bordoodles tend to have higher predictability of traits compared to F1 Bordoodles. There is a greater chance for traits to stabilize and become more consistent. F2 Bordoodles can still display variations in appearance and temperament due to genetic recombination. Some dogs may resemble one parent more strongly, while others may show a balanced mix of traits. This generation is often sought after for its potential to produce puppies with a more predictable set of traits. By introducing another backcross, breeders aim to refine specific qualities in the offspring, such as coat texture, size, or temperament. Multigenerational Bordoodle A multigenerational Bordoodle refers to a dog that is the result of breeding two or more generations of Bordoodles. Breeding multigenerational Bordoodles aims to establish a more consistent breed standard while retaining the desired traits from the parent breeds. What Does a Bordoodle Look Like? They have a sturdy and athletic physique, combining the agility and grace of the Border Collie with the elegance of the Poodle. They have a moderate yet strong bone structure, giving them a sense of athleticism and agility. Their head is usually rounded with expressive eyes and floppy or semi-erect ears. One of the standout features of the Bordoodle is its coat, which can vary in texture and length depending on the genetic traits inherited from its parents. As for coat color, Bordoodles can have a wide array of variations, including black, white, cream, brown, merle, and combinations thereof. How big will a Border Collie Poodle mix get? Bordoodle typically falls into the medium-sized category. On average, they can reach a height ranging from 12 to 22 inches 31 to 56 cm at the shoulder. The weight of a Bordoodle usually falls between 30 and 60 pounds 14 to 27 kg , depending on various factors such as genetics, diet, and exercise. They inherit traits from both parent breeds, creating a unique blend of characteristics. The Border Collie is renowned for its intelligence, energy, and herding instincts. These dogs are highly trainable, diligent, and thrive when given tasks to perform. They are known for their loyalty and strong bonds with their families. Border Collies are generally alert, responsive, and highly active, requiring regular mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom and potential behavior issues. Border Collie Conversely, Poodles are highly intelligent, versatile, and often have a balanced temperament. They are known for their friendly nature, adaptability, and eagerness to please their owners. Poodles are usually quick learners and enjoy participating in various activities, such as obedience training, agility, and even water sports. Combining these two breeds in a Bordoodle can result in a dog with a wonderful temperament. Bordoodles are intelligent, eager to learn, and responsive to training. They excel in sports and activities due to their athleticism and agility. They thrive when given mental challenges and excercise. Training a Bordoodle should involve positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewards, praise, and treats. These dogs are highly motivated by positive feedback and will respond well to consistent and structured training methods. Early socialization is crucial for Bordoodles to ensure they develop good manners and become well-adjusted members of society. Are Bordoodles good family dogs? Yes, Bordoodles can be excellent companions for the right family. Their intelligence and trainability make them suitable for families willing to invest time and effort into their training and mental stimulation. However, their high energy levels may not be the best fit for families with a sedentary lifestyle or limited time to dedicate to their exercise needs. Generally, Bordoodles can get along well with children if properly socialized and introduced from an early age. They have a playful nature and can be patient and gentle with kids. However, supervision is always recommended to ensure both the dog and children interact positively and safely. Are they good with other pets? Bordoodles can generally be good with other pets, especially if they are socialized and introduced to them at an early age. Hip Dysplasia: This is a common health issue in many large and medium-sized breeds, including Border Collies and Poodles. It occurs when the hip joint does not develop properly, leading to discomfort and potentially causing arthritis. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding excessive jumping or strenuous activities can help prevent or minimize the impact of hip dysplasia. Consult your veterinarian for further advice; surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : PRA is an inherited eye condition that leads to the gradual degeneration of the retina, ultimately resulting in blindness. Regular eye check-ups by a veterinarian can help detect early signs of PRA. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures. While the exact cause is often unknown, it can sometimes be inherited. If your Bordoodle exhibits seizures, consult with a veterinarian who can help diagnose and manage the condition. Allergies: Both Border Collies and Poodles are known to have allergies, and Bordoodles may inherit this predisposition. Allergies can manifest as skin irritations, itching, ear infections, and gastrointestinal issues. Identifying and avoiding allergens, such as certain foods or environmental triggers, can help manage allergies. Your veterinarian may recommend a special diet, medication, or other interventions to alleviate symptoms. On average, Bordoodles have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. However, individual dogs may vary, and factors such as genetics, overall health, and lifestyle can influence their lifespan. Providing proper nutrition, regular exercise, routine veterinary care, and a loving environment can contribute to a longer and healthier life for your Bordoodle. How much exercise does a Bordoodle need? Bordoodles typically benefit from at least one hour of exercise per day. This can include activities such as brisk walks, jogging, playing fetch, and engaging in interactive games or training sessions. Fortunately, the Bordoodle is highly adaptable to apartment living, which means you need not worry even if you reside in an urban area with limited access to extensive outdoor spaces. Since Bordoodles have a herding background from the Border Collie parent, mental stimulation is also important for their overall well-being. Puzzle toys, obedience training, and agility exercises can help meet their intellectual needs. How often should you groom a Border Doodle? Bordoodle has a low-shedding coat that requires regular brushing to prevent matting and keep it looking its best. Aim to brush their coat at least two to three times a week, using a slicker brush or a comb to remove any tangles or loose hair. Additionally, regular bathing is recommended every six to eight weeks or as needed, using a mild dog shampoo to keep their coat clean and healthy. Pay attention to their ears, teeth, and nails as well, ensuring they are clean, free of wax buildup, and properly trimmed. What should I feed my Bordoodle? Bordoodle requires a high-quality, balanced diet specifically formulated for active and medium-sized breeds. Look for dog foods that list real meat or fish as the primary ingredient, without fillers or artificial additives. The portion size will depend on factors such as age, weight, and activity level. How Much Does a Bordoodle Cost? Remember that the initial cost of acquiring a puppy is just one aspect of pet ownership. There are additional expenses to consider, including veterinary care, vaccinations, grooming, food, training, and general supplies. These platforms allow you to search for Bordoodle puppies based on location and other preferences. Breed-specific Websites: Some breeders have their own websites dedicated to Bordoodles. These websites provide detailed information about their breeding practices, available puppies, and often include photos and testimonials from previous buyers. They are highly trainable and excel in various activities, including agility and obedience. They have a low shedding coat, making them a good option for people with allergies. Their friendly and loyal nature also makes them wonderful family pets and therapy dogs. Check us out on Facebook for the latest news, upcoming litters and fun antics. Testimonials Wilder, now 3 month old, is awesome. He loves all of us, loves to please, and loves to explore and learn. Several neighbors and friends are jealous, and others have asked to help them with theirs. However, we met one of your older dogs at a restaurant last year, asked the owner about him, and immediately began researching Oregon Bordoodles. She is the most personable, intelligent dog I have ever owned. When we started looking into getting a Bordoodle we were fortunate to find Danielle, who answered all our many questions and worked closely with us throughout the process of picking a puppy and finally bringing our baby home. He is a spunky, energetic, loving dog. He loves to play and he is very brilliant. He can learn tricks in 10 minutes and will remember them forever. All of our lives have changed with his presence, but we would not trade him for any dog! It has been pure ease and love on every step of our journey. Lassie Grace is a love, with over the top energy and enthusiasm for life, hikes miles easily, with daily mile walks. Strong, muscular, guardian of her domain, still very puppy with ongoing training as she matures, never met a stranger human or canine , shining star at the vet and groomer they all love her disposition and they send me compliment notes on the joy she brings into their work space. She is high test energy yet mellows and melts right into you for love, confidently submissive, a total kid dog. The puppies were happy and at play in their warm and loving farm environment. We picked our female, red merle pup and named her Daisy. Danielle has provided us with excellent technical and emotional support as Daisy has grown. We love our year and half year old Bordoodle. Daisy is extremely cheerful, freindly and smart. She enjoys all ages of people, especially children. She is low shedding and rarely barks. As a very active dog, she requires consistent and lively exercise and play. Daisy is a great addition to our family and we love her dearly! Are you wondering what a "Bordoodle" is? Bordoodles are extremely intelligent, friendly and eager to please. They get along well with other dogs and children and are very easy to train. Contact Us BorDoodles Bordoodles are a wonderful mix of big brains and big hearts. Perfect for those looking for an active, intelligent companion. Our bordoodles are a mix of border collie and poodle. In this cross we hope to harness the intelligence and working drive of the border collie as well as the less serious nature and allergy friendly coat of the poodle. About Border Collies: Border collies consistently rank 1 on lists of most intelligent dog breeds and over the years we have found that to be very accurate. The border collie is an incredible athlete, amazingly intelligent and intuitive and has boundless energy for work and play. People typically revere these dogs for just those reasons. Whip smart, capable of amazing athletic feats and always eager to learn, the border order collie ranks highly on my list of favorite dog breeds and has since I rescued my first BC years ago. With all of that said, border collies are NOT for everyone because they are so smart, athletic and energetic. A bored border collie can be a nightmare. In the right hands they are awesome and in the wrong hands or inexperienced hands they can be a handful for sure. About Poodles: The poodle is a sporting dog, bred for cold water retrieving. In fact, poodles also consistently rank in the top 3 most intelligent breeds. They are also incredible athletes and have lots of energy. They do tend to be more low key than a border collie but they were also bred to work long hours in the field so we should not kid ourselves into thinking they are just a pretty ornamental breed. I have very much enjoyed the goofy, playful personalities of our poodles over the years and obviously the no shedding factor is a plus as well. Our poodles are eager to please, quick learners and all around great dogs. See our Doodle FAQs! The Bordoodle is best suited for active families. Bordoodle puppies learn super fast but they also require lots of mental and physical exercise to keep them content. If you are someone who enjoys more lazy days and naps on the couch, a bordoodle is not the dog for you. If, however, you love to lead an active life, and are prepared to add your dog to your adventures these pups might be a great addition to your family. Our bordoodles are excellent hiking and jogging partners, will excel at dog sports and many of them love to swim. The Bordoodle is a playful, loving, and affectionate family dog. They get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. They can be protective and initially wary of strangers, but do not tend to be aggressive as long as they have been properly socialized. As with any dog breed, poor socialization or training can result in poor behavior including fear-based aggression. But, these dogs generally have a lively, social, and friendly disposition. Although the Bordoodle tends to have a lot of energy, they can adapt well to just about any living situation. They will do well in large homes with room to roam as well as apartments as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because Bordoodles bond closely with their families, they thrive on attention and affection. This, paired with the fact that they are easily bored, means they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed breed can inherit the potential health concerns of one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. For the Bordoodle, potential health concerns to be aware of include allergies, epilepsy , hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to ensure preventable issues are not being passed on to puppies. Bordoodles tend to be highly intelligent. Although they are eager to please and tend to pick up on things quickly, they are also easily bored. This can pose a challenge for some first-time dog owners. But, overall, the Bordoodle tends to be highly trainable and a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They are eager to learn and respond best to positive methods focused on praise and rewards. Puppy training classes are always an option and are a great way to socialize a puppy too. When it comes to coat care, the Border Collie is lower maintenance than the Poodle even though they shed more. You need to be prepared for either type of coat or anything in between with your Bordoodle. The Poodle coat may be low-shedding, but it requires daily brushing and almost monthly grooming in order to stay healthy. The Border Collie coat sheds moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a Border Collie is on a weekly basis and bathing is as needed. Weekly ear checks with careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. The Bordoodle can range from moderate to high energy. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run should be sufficient to keep this dog happy and healthy. Trips to the dog park, playing frisbee, hiking, running, swimming with your dog , and more can all be great activities for you and your Bordoodle to do together. German boxers have more bone, substance and have different head types than their American counterparts which are more refined in type, are rectangular rather than square. European boxer dogs have a shorter muzzle rather than long like the Americans. We breed Fawn, brindle, reverse brindle and rarely we have all white. After placing a puppy we continue to keep in touch with all families by building a life lasting relationship. Our goal is to breed a dog that is going to spend many many happy years with their new families and how do we do that? We keep our eyes wide open when it comes to health, we also import healthy dogs from all over Europe that come from healthy ancestors. We also strive for breeding a puppy that can obtain the highest possible conformation ratings. We strive to select the perfect families and homes for our puppies and adult dogs always taking into consideration that will compliment both dog and human temperaments. We are very proud of our dogs , and it shows in the way they are raised and cared for here. We operate out of the Omaha-Lincoln, Nebraska area. Our focus is to save German Shepherd dogs at risk of being euthanized in shelters or other dire situations. We also help Australian Cattle Dogs and other herding breeds and mixes in need, as much as we are able to. Many are sick or injured. And these adorable, forgotten pups couldn't be more needy or deserving of our compassion and help. You can help too by opening your heart and fostering, adopting or donating. Our Mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and place the dogs we rescue in permanent, loving homes. German Shepherds are highly intelligent, yet sensitive and intuitive dogs. We firmly believe that they respond best to positive reinforcement and a firm but always kind hand. German Shepherds thrive on structure, consistency, and mutual respect. They respond very well to reward-based training treats, praise. Being heavy-handed, rough, or using force or inappropriate training tools is not only unkind, but it can often lead to distrust and can result in behavioral issues. We do not have a shelter facility. The dogs we rescue stay with our volunteer foster families until the time of their adoption. We provide necessary veterinary care, appropriate nutrition, love, training and socialization to ready our dogs for their forever home. Our greatest need is for foster families. Our ability to save a dog's life is most often determined by whether we have an open foster home for that dog to go in. There are many ways that you can help. We always need volunteers to help transport, process applications, and do home visits. Cannot foster or volunteer? Donations are much appreciated! Adoption fees do not begin to cover the foster dogs' expenses, which include dog food, preventative, vetting, boarding, and in many cases high-cost medical bills. Many of the dogs we help, arrive with no prior vetting whatsoever, and are sick or injured, which can be very costly to a small, all-volunteer rescue like ours. We are very thankful for our supporters' generosity, as we rely on fundraisers and donations to continue helping dogs in need! Your donation is tax deductible. If you would like a receipt for your donation, please let us know. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and allow us to save more dogs. Highlighted Events. Historically, they were used in. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. As always, practicing responsible dog ownership is crucial before committing to a Mini Goldendoodle for sale. Let's examine the Mini Goldendoodle's characteristics, behaviors, training, and grooming requirements to determine whether this is the right dog for you. Characteristics The standard lifespan of a Mini Goldendoodle ranges from twelve to sixteen years. The popularity of this breed stems not only from its low-shedding characteristics translation: low-maintenance and less vacuuming! These dogs are typically a lovely golden blond and it's not uncommon to find streaks of white on the head and chest. You can find a Mini Goldendoodle for sale in darker colors as well, like caramel, dark brown, and black. Disposition Opting for Mini Goldendoodles for sale is the perfect choice if you're looking for a sweet, mild-mannered, social pup. These dogs are people-oriented, love attention, and seek a lot of interaction from their owners. Get ready for lots of cuddling — they'll do anything for a belly rub! Miniature Goldendoodles are also great additions to homes that already have pets. These dogs love the companionship of other dogs as much as humans. When properly socialized from a young age, Mini Goldendoodles can even be taught to get along with cats! Training Miniature Goldendoodles are highly trainable thanks to their intelligence and desire to please. It is not uncommon for them to master new commands in just a few sessions assuming you have enough treats on hand. The main challenge of training these dogs is that they are high-energy, easily excitable, and struggle to focus for long. Maintaining short training sessions will help your dog to reach its full potential. Positive reinforcement training is by far the most effective training method for ensuring your dog is disciplined and well-behaved. Grooming Requirements As a poodle mix, this breed requires a little more hair care than most other dogs. While they're famous for low-shedding, that doesn't mean their coat doesn't need maintenance. Regularly brushing your pup's curls is essential for preventing their fur from becoming tangled and matted. It's best to brush your dog at least three times per week using a metal pin brush. The Mini Goldendoodle also has fast-growing fur. For this reason, consider taking the dog to a professional groomer every two to three months. The work of a professional also makes home grooming far less taxing. These dogs tend not to have that distinct "doggy odor" native to other breeds. However, just because your Mini Goldendoodle doesn't smell doesn't mean it doesn't need a bath. You should still regularly bathe your dog to avoid bacteria buildup and infections, and don't forget to check those ears. Why Pawrade? So many families were trying to avoid shedding coats and the Goldendoodle was proving to fill that need. We started this venture with a mini Poodle instead of a toy Poodle as we felt that was the best step in downsizing to achieve the mini Goldendoodle dog breed. Our goal was to create adult Goldendoodles with the average weight of about 35 lb. Our first litter arrived on January 11, providing us with 5 males and 5 females, all with wavy coats. This litter was an F1 litter , but was the beginning of the many future generations of Goldendoodles and the foundation for the multigen Goldendoodle. Fox Creek Farm retained two of the females in this litter for future development of the mini Goldendoodle breed. Pebbles whelped the first litter of F1B mini Goldendoodles in .We still have dogs in our breeding program that trace all the way back to Pebbles as documented in the GANA database. You can view photos of the entire litter below and some feedback provided by each family who raised one of these little teddy bears. Fox Creek Farm followed each and every puppy throughout its life to learn about temperaments, health, trainability, coat care, and longevity. We made some lifelong friends with these families who had trusted us to provide them with a puppy unlike any other breed they had met before. Not only were the reports always positive, just about every family has since come back for one or more mini Goldendoodles from Fox Creek Farm. The first of this litter to pass of old age lived to be .The last of the litter to pass was just a month shy of 17 years. On average, the mini Goldendoodles in this litter lived to be 15 years of age. We found this to be in part due to the hybrid vigor and in part due to the health testing certifications performed on the parents. This proves the importance of health testing dogs before they are bred. Listen to me, do I sound like a proud Mama or not? Amy, Triscuit has been a total joy in our lives. Then along came Triscuit. He still loves to eat anything he can and likes to play in the snow. I am sad that he is already 9 years old! He still acts young, in his usual lazy manner! Thanks so much for keeping in touch. Casey A few words about Casey: He is very lovable and compassionate. He enjoys hiking though all seasons and is a great trailblazer leading the pack with his nose to the ground, stopping at any fork in the trail to be told which direction to continue in. Many times he will fall asleep with it under his paw. Casey has some funny and entertaining quirks that make me laugh out loud. He loves digging in the sand at beaches and on every July 4th he hides in the bathtub during the fireworks as loud noises scare him. Pebbles I have lots of dogs being a breeder. She produced 3 litters before retiring from breeding. She is my constant companion and seems to read my mind. All the other dogs have learned that when Pebbles says it is time for a bath, they have to drop whatever they are doing and let her clean their eyes and ears. Lucy Lucy produced many wonderful litters for Fox Creek Farm. She is the mother of Chester, one of Fox Creek Farms fabulous studs. She is living out her retirement with Debra Wachter. Lucy outlived all her brothers and sisters. She joined them all for a romp in the skies in early December, just a month shy of 17 years. Sign Up for our Newsletter First Name. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they will alert you of strangers at the door, they tend to warm up quickly as they are more interested in making friends and receiving attention. Mini Goldendoodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their smaller size makes them a great fit for apartment living or for bigger homes with yards where they can run. As long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention, they can adapt well. These little dogs tend to do well in just about any climate. However, like any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Due to their smaller size, you may need to gear up with some dog-friendly winter gear when temperatures start falling. Because this dog breed is loyal and people-oriented, they love to be in your company and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. This means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it early on. Instead, make sure your new Mini Goldendoodle puppy has an active role in your life. If you do need to leave them alone for a bit, make sure they have some comforting toys or challenging puzzles to keep them from getting bored. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Bathing is occasional and can often be relegated to the dog groomer that is recommended you visit every weeks. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Although the parents of this breed have a lot of energy, a Mini Goldendoodle tends to sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are usually enough for them. But, they are also likely to match their energy level to yours, so be prepared for some bursts of energy as well as plenty of cuddling on the couch. Fully-grown Mini Goldendoodles usually stand inches tall at the shoulder. A Miniature Goldendoodle puppy can vary in size based on the generation of the dog. A few core volunteers sprang into action and quickly formed Pug Nation Rescue to ensure these pugs had a safe, loving place to call home. Since then, Pug Nation has been dedicated to rescuing and adopting out pugs and pug mixes regardless of age, medical status or special needs. Since its inception, Pug Nation has rescued and adopted out 1, precious souls and counting! The organization has 12 employees dedicated to caring for its pugs at its facility and averages about rescues and adoptions per year. If no home can be found, we pledge to provide a comfortable and loving place where pugs can live out their lives. O RG 1 how are we different? Pug Nation is different from many other organizations because: n We focus on the neediest of pugs. We pride ourselves on always being there for the most vulnerable dogs—seniors, special needs and pugs with serious health issues. We also provide our dogs with excellent vet care and train our staff to handle special diets, medication, physical therapy, expressing bladders, etc. We feel it is important to establish a forever home for Pug Nation and the special, high needs pugs that may never be adopted. Additionally, we would like to expand our education on rescue and pugs in particular so potential adopters understand the special needs of this breed. We would also like to focus on our special needs and senior pugs and improve on their adoption rates. We are thrilled to have a permanent location as security for our Pugs; the ones that are awaiting homes and the few that do not get adopted will now always have a place to live out their lives. As you know, the economy goes up and down and the proceeds from our many fundraising events throughout the year are never guaranteed. We also have a unique budgeting challenge as we never do know what medical costs may be around the corner. We may think we have plenty in reserve and two surgeries later, our funds may be depleted. Sadly, over the last several years a few area pug rescues have folded and we have seen the need for our help expand to such areas as the Central Coast of California and even Las Vegas. Pugs far and wide are counting on us, and there is no end in sight. With growth and an excellent reputation comes increased responsibility and people from all over the U. Please consider one of our Naming Opportunities to help Pug Nation weather the ups and down of the economy and still have a reserve for building and medical costs for our Pugs regardless of yearly fundraising efforts. The funds will be put aside and used for the following: n Property Taxes. Both of my parents are in medicine. My mom, Dr. My greatest achievement would be my Instagram page — winstogrampug. From there we began showing dairy goats, angora goats, and pygmy goats in 4-H, FFA, and open shows from .When my son went off to college, we decided to sell off our dairy goat herd and focus on our Pug Breeding Program. Once we were able to focus on our Pug Breeding Program more we began to search for pugs of unique colors that we didn't already own. In I quit my job, and started breeding pugs full time. My new job title is a "Stay at Home Pug Mommy". Instead we retire them and they live out the remainder of their lives here at Tipping Point Farm, playing, eating, sleeping day after day, and spending time with our family. After all, Pugs are the ultimate companion and mans best friend. They will always be there for you no matter what, whether they are trying to cheer you up, steel your food, or give you kisses. With such a large demand for our pugs, I have now brought in my mom's dogs to be a part of my breeding program, so everyone is able to have their own Tipping Point Farm Pug. My Mom owns a farm thirty minutes away from me where she lives and raises her own pugs with help from me. On February 11th, , my first pug, "Cheese", the one who started it all passed away suddenly. The whole family was devastated after learning of her passing and spending so many years with such a great dog. I was heart broken, I lost my best friend. This one dog was the reason behind my whole pug breeding program. I loved this dog so much that I wanted to breed pugs so everyone could have "their own Cheese". After all, Pug love is like no other, you are their world and they become a family member. Even though Cheese is no longer here with us, I know that I am lucky enough to have got to spend so many years with her and have her daughters, grand daughters, and great grand daughters. When it comes to our pugs, Health is our 1 priority and then of course color! From day one, we are directly involved with our puppies, we help them come into the world and love them everyday till they go to there new family. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again. Creekside is committed to making sure all of their puppies are healthy and well socialized — ready for happy homes. They also offer a one-year genetic health guarantee for all of their pups. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. You might have to try a few different treats, which could be a fun experience. Go to the pet shop, order a few online , and let your dog sample them. Whichever one they take to the best, you can offer these specific ones during training. Once your poodle starts really catching on to the concept of treat equaling a reward, you can slowly start backing off. That takes us to our next step. The ultimate goal is to get to the point where they will listen to your command without a treat as compensation. You can reward them in other ways, such as words of praise or cuddles. Do not ever stop treat training cold turkey. Your dog might have a lot of trouble making that transition. So to keep up with routine training, start giving them a treat every other time, and take it away slowly from there. Command Training Your toy poodle is going to impress you with their incredible intelligence. You will want to keep up with treat training during this process until your toy poodle has learned the commands you wish to teach. This helps your dog comprehend, reflect, and understand your vocabulary. Commit to a Routine Use the same command every single time you want your dog to act. Do not confuse them with long strings of sentences. Anytime your dog needs to go to the potty, use your phrase of choice and use it each time you introduce the outdoors, for example. Your dog will start to associate the term with the action. Never fail to use the word whenever it is appropriate. The more your dog gets familiar with specific terms, the more quickly they retain them. Dogs can become overwhelmed by their surroundings, which can cause a delay in retention. This is especially true if your dog is particularly flighty or inattentive. The more you work with your dog giving commands, the more likely they will be to listen, especially when it counts. Sometimes professional behavioral training can come in handy. It really adds a foundation to get you and your pup working together to achieve specific results. Professional behaviorists will be able to explain to you exactly how to interact with your dog to promote a healthy relationship and mutual respect between you. Any good trainer will tell you that anything they teach your dog, it is equally important to continue at home. Many behavioral classes allow you to work directly with your dog during training. Some trainers board your dog and work with them privately, returning them to your home after a week or another designated time. With patience and persistence, you can train your toy poodle to use the bathroom outside for good. Granted, these are tiny dogs with tiny bladders, so it might take a little bit longer for them. You might still need to supplement with puppy pads. But here is a primary training method for success in pottying outdoors. Have a Designated Spot Image Credit: Chewy Before you even begin potty training, you should have an outdoor area in mind. The consistency of taking your dog to the same spot will allow them to bridge the connection. Plus, it makes yard cleanup a whole lot easier for you. So choose a site that is easy to clean and familiar to your poodle. So a 3-month-old puppy should be taken out at least every 3 hours. Also, taking them out immediately following meals or excessive drinking can make this a whole lot easier. Utilize a Crate Dogs are naturally clean creatures and would prefer not to lay in their own mess. When your little toy poodle is just getting started, crate training is an excellent potty-training tool. So, if you have a crate big enough for your toy poodle to lay, but not rome around, it lessens the chances of accidents. If you leave your dog in the crate and get them out every hour or whatever time you have scheduled, this lessens the risk of in-home accidents. Remember that this is a tool, so use it wisely and only when needed. You should not keep your puppy inside the crate all day long. He will gradually be able to decrease the time spent in the crate as your little toy poodle starts catching on. It might be really hard at first to find a crate small enough for your little guy or gal. But most pet stores and online pet shops have available options. Keep a Positive Attitude Punishment is never a way to start a positive relationship. Yelling, screaming, swatting, or punishing your toy poodle harshly can lead to a lot of conflicting strain in the relationship. Creating a positive environment and making your toy poodle feel safe is a foundation to build. Just keep your bearings and know that this process will be over soon. Utilize Puppy Pads Many trainers advise against using methods like puppy pads to train your dog. It can create a lot of bad habits. We definitely recommend trying the training process without using puppy pads initially. If you find that your dog needs a release when you cannot give them one, puppy pads might be a method you should consider. Some dogs are purely puppy pad trained, meaning they use them similarly to a litter box. Things Not to Do When Training Negative fear-based training is definitely a no-no when you are training your toy poodle. Poodles are known to develop anxiety if put in the wrong situation. So even tones can sometimes shift the way that your dog is feeling. This is a very sensitive breed of dog, and training should be conducted accordingly. Your dog should feel safe with you at all times. Especially in the early years, you are creating a relationship with this animal. If they never know what to expect from you or you are being cruel to them, it will forever impact your relationship. Remember that rehoming is always an option if you cannot prevent that frustration, even after seeking professional guidance. There are ways to make it as seamless as possible for both of you. Remember that this is just a small portion of the beautiful moments you and your toy poodle will share. Remember, with any training, patience and consistency are key. Your dog needs to feel safe in its environment, and you need to be as understanding as possible. When following the proper techniques, you will be amazed at what your little toy poodle can achieve. Poodle Puppy House Training Overview While housebreaking a puppy may feel like a huge obstacle that is time-consuming at best and an undertaking that may fail at worst, there are definitely things that you can do to set your Poodle puppy up for success for potty training. There are 2 main elements: Having a clear plan in mind that will encourage a pup to learn quickly Having reasonable expectations based on the age of your Poodle In this section, we will go over all of the important steps for effective and fast training. Age to House Train This is most certainly not something that you will want to put off. Whether you have a brand-new Poodle puppy or an older, adopted dog that needs to learn, it is best to begin right away. Every day that this is not taught, is another day that the dog has wrong information about what to do and this just in and of itself will make housebreaking harder. Keep in mind that new puppies should not be brought outside to public areas or even your yard if there is a chance that other dogs have been there until the full rounds of puppy vaccinations are complete. Each vet schedule is slightly different; however, in general this is done by about the 4 month mark. If you are not sure, check with your vet. Having a Housebreaking Plan It's not uncommon for a puppy to pee or have a bowel movement with very little warning. And without a plan in place, this is when you'll see owners scrambling and picking up the pup while he dribbles urine as he's being carried out the door. While you will not catch every accident, you really will have much better success when you and all members of the family have a clear potty training plan in place. We would suggest reviewing what is needed, obtaining all of the necessities to be properly prepped, and then beginning. What is Needed Before You Begin There are a few things that you will need in order for housebreaking to be successful: 1 A supervision method. This is vital. Puppies or dog that have free rein in the house will be exceptionally hard to train. When you are home and are able to have your Poodle right by your side, use the tethering method. This means that your Poodle will be wearing a harness not a collar, since this can cause neck injury and will be on leash. The leash should be short and it should have a soft-looped handle, so that you can weave this through your belt loop or slip it over your wrist. When you are not home, or if you are home but cannot keep your Poodle near you, you'll need to keep your puppy or dog in a defined, secure area. Crates are not recommended; these are terribly confining and can cause a dog to feel both physically and emotionally stressed. Furthermore, they do not help with housebreaking; a dog will pee and poo when they need to. Gating off an entire room is also not recommended. This is too large of an area to do really do anything, and therefore there will still be pee and poo everywhere. One of the best methods is to use an indoor canine playpen. These are sturdy, open-top pens that allow a Poodle to move around, play, have all his favorite belongings food, water, toys, bed , but also keep messes contained. As a side note, these are great for separation anxiety, as they offer a secure 'den' that keeps all of a Poodle's aids right by them. And, these are perfect for the teething phase to keep a Poodle puppy from chewing apart the house. Recommended playpens to help with house training are below. These can be found with or without doors, and range from 24" ideal for toy and miniature Poodles to 48" better for standards, especially if continued to be used as the puppy grows. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. And on mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. Giving a Poodle incentive to do something applies to potty training, perhaps, more than it does with any other single action. Once something is a learned behavior, it become automatic though it is still nice to reinforce good behavior now and again. For housebreaking to happen quickly, you need to 1 give super-happy praise and simultaneously 2 offer the right type of reward. The training treat should be: New - It should not be something that you give to your Poodle for regular snacks. If you've found a great, all-natural and healthy snack that you'd like to keep giving, see if it comes in a different flavor. Small - House training treats need to be small. A puppy needs immediate satisfaction, and you cannot achieve this with something that a dog needs to sit down to chew on. Extra flavorful - It should be appealing to a Poodle sense of smell and sense of taste, offering a burst of flavor that will encourage the desire for more. And 'more' can only happen when the Poodle goes to the bathroom in the right area. Below are our top recommended training treats. And on mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. Dogs that are simply brought 'outside' for bathroom needs rarely have a good, clear understanding of what is expected. If they are out there long enough, they may very well go to the bathroom. However, your goal should be going above this and instilling the full concept of having one area for urination and elimination needs. Choose the area wisely; what may seem like a great spot in the summer may not work well in the winter. The bathroom area should be close to the home, not a spot that is used for anything else play area, gardening, etc. Within the chosen area, allow your Poodle to choose the exact spot that he prefers. Dogs that have a choice learn much faster and are more eager to follow the rules. It is best to stand in the middle of the area with your puppy on a 6 to 8 foot leash. Allow him to circle around and, sniff. Some will then need time for the bladder to relax or for the bowel muscles to push out stool. Since young puppies have weak bladder and bowel muscles, they can often pee or poo with very little warning. Whatever you need in order to bring your Poodle outside should be ready at the exit door. This will include a pair of shoes, an appropriate coat or jacket depending on the weather, clothing for your Poodle - should there be a need, an umbrella in case it is raining, a leash and even a book or magazine to thumb though while you wait. For the times that you are home, you will want to bring your Poodle to the designated area at the following times: First thing in the morning Any time right after the puppy wakes up from a nap Every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old, every 4 hours for a 4 month old, etc. It would certainly make things easier if dogs understood what we were saying when we spoke full sentences after they did something that we didn't approve of. However, puppies that are rewarded for good deeds and quietly forgiven for accidents are able to pick up what the owner wishes for without any scolding. Please remember that you want your Poodle to respect you, not fear you. And while it may feel good to release a bit of steam if you find a puddle of pee, yelling or acting frustrated will only confused and stress a puppy that really has no idea why you are upset. Dogs learn best when they can associate a word with an action. So, you'll want everyone in the house to be in agreement as to which word s will be used for housebreaking. It's best to keep it short, and have it be something that you do not feel uncomfortable saying in public. You will use this as you head outside 'Do you need to go potty? While some puppies will instantly pee or poo, others need time. Owners that only give the pup only a few minutes may have trouble with the training. Since 5 minutes can feel like 20 if you are bored, cold or otherwise uncomfortable or antsy, plan ahead. Have an outdoor chair located right in the middle of the bathroom area and plan ahead to check your mail or email during these times. It is recommended to give the puppy a good 15 minutes and if you just know that a bowel movement is due, give it .While on this note, one of the biggest problems that owners encounter is when a puppy won't pee in his spot no matter how long there, but will pee as soon as being brought back inside. A good tip to fix this, should it happen often, is hold him after you come back inside he won't pee on you ; then head back out in about 10 minutes. While young Poodles need to be taken out often see above , if they are kept on that schedule as they mature, they will not have an opportunity to learn to hold their needs and bladder and bowel muscles will not strengthen as they otherwise would. As you puppy grows older, stretch out the periods of time in between taking him out. While the carpet may look clean after you scrub it with dish soap and a sturdy brush, soap does not eliminate enzymes that are in urine. And those lingering enzymes you won't smell these, but your Poodle will essentially scream 'This is the bathroom area! So, all areas that have been pee'd or poo'd on need to be cleaned with an enzyme cleanser. Puppies are terrific at making whining noises and barking in the middle of the night, without letting us know if they need to go to the bathroom or are just bored and wanting some attention. If a puppy pees and poos before bedtime, it is far more likely that he wants your company as opposed to having a real need. However, it is always best to be safe than sorry. The important element is that this be done in a very serious manner without any play or other interaction. Keep lights low, bring your Poodle puppy directly to his spot, wait the allotted time without speaking other than praise if the deed is done and then bring him right back. A puppy will soon learn that barking for attention at night does not bring about any interaction that would seem worthy of making a fuss but that alerting you in regard to bathroom needs does result in praise and a quick treat. It's a common occurrence for owners to bring their Poodle for a walk in the neighborhood and just let the puppy go to the bathroom along the way. However, this is a missed opportunity for a house training lesson. Bring your Poodle to his spot first and then bring him for his exercise. Housebreaking Exact Steps This is exactly how to bring your Poodle out, what to say, and what to do: 1. Head outside with your Poodle on leash and harness, saying your chosen phrase Let's go potty , and with the training treats in a small zipped plastic bag, kept in your pocket. Lead your Poodle directly to the designated bathroom area, repeating the phrase. Stand in the middle of the designated area, allowing your Poodle to roam within the diameter and sniff around. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. If your Poodle pees or poos, without completely distracting your pup, mark the action with your chosen word said in a happy tone, You're going potty. During this time, be reaching for the training treat. As soon as your Poodle is done, bend to his level, give great praise in a super-enthusiastic voice Good potty, oh, you are such a good dog! If your Poodle had a bowel movement, and you believe that there may be a urination need, remain outside for an additional 5 minutes. A Final Word While you will need a bit of patience during this time, with a good plan and lots of enthusiasm from you, your Poodle puppy should be completely house trained with a few months. After you feel that he is fully trained, be sure to still bring him out often enough, and continue to offer praise to reinforce the lessons that have been learned. These little superstars are famous for their looks, but a well-trained toy Poodle can even be used as a service dog for people who need support and are often chosen as a support dog whose job it is to visit those in hospitals and hospices. Because of their intelligence, however, the toy Poodle will need plenty of mental stimulation but not as much physical stimulation as standard Poodles. An under-stimulated or bored toy Poodle can bark incessantly and even become destructive out of boredom. A well-trained toy Poodle is a happy one, so read on to learn how to train your toy Poodle in five simple steps. Preparing to Train When beginning your training, setting your goals is important. For example, do you want to complete basic training with your pup, or are you hoping to teach them more advanced tricks? Having a plan in mind when you begin can keep training smooth and keep you both calm, as well as give you something to celebrate once your dog gets it right! Learning what motivates your toy Poodle is another crucial step before training. Some dogs are toy-motivated, meaning a new toy will be the ultimate reward for completing a task, and some are treat-motivated. If your toy Poodle is conditioned to use a clicker, click it, and give your Poodle a treat to let them know to expect it. Grab your motivators treats, toys, etc. The 5 Steps for Training a Toy Poodle 1. However, their intelligence may mean they get bored more quickly, so keep this in mind when planning your sessions. To teach a command, ensure you have everything you need and that your training area is free of distractions. Do this a few more times, making sure to use the same command every time your dog correctly sits on the ground. Image Credit: ardiwebs, Shutterstock 2. Master the Command Every toy Poodle will need patience and repetition to be trained successfully. Repeating the process, rewarding the command, and saying your chosen word in a clear voice will help your Poodle make the necessary connections in their brain. If you want your dog to stay after they sit, for example, teaching in this order will help them learn the routine and will ultimately make training smoother for you both going ahead. Taking your time with each command and ensuring your toy Poodle understands what they need to do to be rewarded is the key to successful training, and this, in turn, will lead to our next point in how to train your Poodle: practice. Image Credit: bodnar. Time to Test The last facet of training for any dog is to put its training to the test. Poodles are a highly intelligent breed, so adding additional commands and actions into their training will keep them sharp and entertained and continually build the bond between you. Using the commands in daily life and not always rewarding if they get it right will keep the motivation to get the treat which is as important as the treat itself. Having your dog perform the task a few times before giving a treat and lots of fuss can be a good way to keep your Poodles attention. It can be overwhelming if a large amount of training is being undertaken at once. For example, are the training sessions long? Are multiple tricks being taught at the same time? Try to perform your training in a quiet, relatively empty space you both know well. If you find yourself getting frustrated, stop the training and calm down. Never shout at or scold your dog for not getting the training, as this will make them not want to perform it at all in fear of being yelled at again. Conclusion Toy Poodles are intelligent and sweet little dogs bursting with energy and charm. Training them can be challenging , as they can get bored with the same thing being repeated, but they typically pick up training lightning fast, enjoying every minute. The keys to successful training with your toy Poodle are to be consistent and patient, practice, and, most importantly, have fun.

Although a mixed-breed dog can take on any combination of traits from one or both of their parent breeds, well-socialized Saint Berdoodles tend to be affectionate and loving dogs with sweet natures and social personalities. This designer dog breed may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other notable dog organizations. The Saint Berdoodle is a gentle giant that makes a great addition to any family. Well-socialized, they tend to be social and friendly with charming, cheerful personalities. They also tend to be affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent dogs. These dogs can be good watchdogs as they are initially wary of strangers and will alert you when someone is on the property. Although Saint Berdoodles do tend to have a protective instinct over their family and territory, they tend to be quite social and friendly and do not tend to be aggressive provided they have been properly socialized and trained. Saint Berdoodles are moderately adaptable dogs. Due to their sheer size, they are better suited to larger homes with yards where they can run and roam freely. They could potentially adapt to apartment living if they are given enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, but their size will definitely be a challenge in smaller spaces. This dog adapts well to most moderate climates. As a large, fluffy dog, they are also sensitive to heat and can easily overheat. Because a Saint Berdoodle craves attention, bonds closely with their family, and loves being with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A crossbred dog can inherit the potential health concerns common to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Saint Berdoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure that they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large dog, the Saint Berdoodle is also at a higher risk of bloat just like both parent breeds. Bloat in dogs can become dangerous quickly and is fatal if the stomach flips. Although the Saint Berdoodle will grow to be a giant dog, they tend to be gentle and highly trainable. Their high intelligence and eagerness to please means they pick up on things quickly and are relatively easy to train. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods that are calm and consistent and focused on reward and praise. Puppy training classes are always an option and can be a good opportunity to socialize a puppy, which is even more important in a dog this size. The maintenance your Saint Berdoodle requires will depend completely on the coat they inherit. But, they will require daily brushing and professional grooming every weeks. Once or twice monthly nail trimming is usually enough to keep them from growing too long and causing issues. You can also support your efforts to prevent dental diseases later in life with dental hygiene chews and treats approved by your vet. Saint Berdoodles tend to have a moderate energy level. They will be energetic while playing and require some exercise, but they will be happy to be a couch potato every now and then. Daily walks plus some time to play are usually enough for this big dog. They may not be a good fit for a running partner, but your Saint Berdoodle may enjoy going on hikes with you, taking trips to the dog park, or even going swimming. Just make sure you keep activities low impact until their bones and joints finish growing and developing. A fully-grown Saint Berdoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. They are one of the largest dog breeds. Saint Berdoodles generally live for years on average. This designer dog breed is most commonly known as a Saint Berdoodle, but they are also sometimes called a Saint Berpoo. Featured Saint Berdoodle Article.
