Monitor your golden to see if they have a habit of licking non-stop, which would lead to excessive shedding. You CAN control it however. And taking these few steps make all the difference. Brushing Your 1 defense to grooming and deshedding will be regular brushing. That part may not come as a big surprise, however most owners don't realize that the right tools make all the difference in the world. I highly recommend you get a good Slicker Brush, they're designed to not only detangle and deshed, but also make brushing comfortable without skin irritation. But ideally every day. I recommend a high quality Slicker Brush and Grey Hound comb. Keeping your golden free of mats will also help out your groomer, which in turn save yous extra money. While these work wonders for some breeds, it will actually ruin the coat of your golden as it cuts their coat rather then remove loose hair. Just use a pin brush, or slicker brush, along with an undercoat rake. Bathing Golden's need to be groomed regularly because of their long coats. General rule of thumb is once every 6 — 8 weeks. If you're bathing at home, we recommend an oatmeal or coconut based pet shampoo to keep their skin from becoming too dry. And as an added bonus they leave your dog smelling great. Pro Tip: After their bath towel dry your dog, while still slightly damp gently brush them out. That's right, shaving your golden will ruin their beautiful coat forever. Simply put, don't do this. What I recommend is getting a groomers to cut their "feathers" extra short. It keep their undercoat intact but removes enough of the long hair for easy maintenance and brushing later on. Thankfully vacuum cleaners are quite inexpensive these days. Make sure you have one with a detachable hose for those hard to reach places like behind and underneath furniture. Swiffers are great for hard surfaces, and they work a lot better than paper towels. There are going to be many exciting events for you to look forward to. Whether you are bringing your 8 week German Shepherd puppy home or about to be blessed with a litter of puppies. This is going to be an exciting, demanding but hugely rewarding journey. Newborn puppies are born at around days after fertilization. Newborn puppies are born with their ears and eyes tightly sealed. The reason eyelids are sealed shut is to form a protective barrier for the fragile developing eye. This helps to protect them from any foreign object, bright lights, bacteria or any other microorganism that can cause disease or damage. In the same way puppies ear canals are closed at birth to make them effectively deaf. This is a protective barrier to protect the fragile underdeveloped machinery needed to hear. In a mature ear the pressure caused by sound will mechanically move structures in the ear. German Shepherd puppies are highly dependent upon their noses. Puppies navigate by smell from the moment they are born. This helps them to identify their mom, the very important milk supply, siblings and surroundings. Newborn puppies are born with a fur coat however they cannot control their own body temperature yet. To keep them warm they are dependant on their mothers or another heat source. If you live in a cooler climate installing a heat lamp would be ideal to help keep the puppies nice and warm. Germans Shepherds make amazing mothers and will be relied on a lot at this stage. Mother dogs will only leave their newborn puppies to go to the toilet, eat and drink. However, when mom has gone the newborn puppies are not completely useless. They are able to use their front paws to drag themselves towards a heat source. When mom is away the puppies will crawl together to preserve their body heat. Along with being able to drag themselves to a heat source newborn puppies are also able to drag themselves to their mothers to locate the milk supply. They will move their heads around to search for a nipple, latch on and suck strongly. Newborn puppies are not born with teeth these will also develop in the next several weeks. Other than the above puppies are completely dependent upon the care of their dedicated mom. Newborn puppies have little control over the rear end of their bodies. To encourage their pups to pass urine and bowel movements the mom will lick their bottoms. Anything produced mom will then lick up and swallow to keep her puppies and nest clean. As they start to interact and play with their siblings their personalities will really start to show. You may also notice them starting to playfully growl at each other. Establishing a daily routine is the best way to get your German Shepherd puppy to sleep through the night. Part of this schedule will involve mealtimes. Your 9 week old puppy will need four meals a day. Split these up throughout the day and try to stick to similar times. This is to stop encouraging your puppy to wake up earlier and earlier because they associate waking with food. You should always reward your puppy either vocally, with a favourite toy or treats for good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour. Puppies and dogs want to be praised so they respond very well to positive encouragement. Punishing puppies and dogs may have a short term positive effect on their behaviour but long term you could be setting them up to fail. It is very important to socialise and expose your puppy to other humans, dogs and different scenarios whilst they are young. This maybe hard before your puppy has had all its vaccines however getting many different people to come and visit you at your home will enable them to get used to visitors. Before their full vaccinations you can also, you can take you German Shepherd puppy out and about with you to expose them to the outside world as long as you can carry them. If you live in the USA, your puppy will be due their second combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 9 weeks old. In the USA a minimum of three sets of the combined vaccine are required for your puppy. Although you cannot put your puppy down outside until after their final vaccination. Puppies 10 week injection In the UK is a booster vaccination to help immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Check with your vet what date after their jabs your German Shepherd puppy will be able to go down outside. Your puppy will then need a booster between 6 and 12 months old. If you live in the USA at 12 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be due their booster for the combined 5in1 vaccine against hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, parvo and coronavirus and a vaccine against rabies and leptospirosis. If you live in a high risk area, they may also need to be given the vaccination to help immunize them against Lyme. If applicable at 16 weeks your German Shepherd puppy may need to have a fourth combined 5in1 vaccine. A minimum of three combined injections are required in the USA. Check with your vet what date they will be able to be out down outside. By 10 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be able to control their bladder a lot more. Potentially up to several hours. This is great time for you to introduce them to the big wide world and develop their social skills which you have already been building the foundations. When taking your German Shepherd puppy out try to introduce them to as many other friendly dogs, humans and noises you can. This will help your German Shepherd puppy to grown into a confident well-rounded dog. At 3 months old your German Shepherd will go down from four daily meals to three. These three portions will be larger than what they are used to which may cause stomach upset. If your German Shepherd puppy does get an upset stomach, try going back to four smaller meals for a couple of days and they try the three larger portions again. This can be a challenging time as your adorable German Shepherd puppy turns into a furry crocodile. Luckily the teething stage is only a phase as with human babies and short lived. In most cases your puppy biting should stop around when they are around 7 months old and have their adult teeth. Things that the puppy may find scary or uncertain during this time can make for big changes in their personality throughout life. For example, if a puppy has a bad experience with a human at this stage, it may lead them to becoming fearful and distrustful towards people for the rest of their life. From here, new owners are expected to continue to train and socialize them, as they are still within a critical period of development. We import our parent dog's lines, so they are from International Champion Lines. This is Ace for example. We raised Ace as a puppy and he now lives in Washington, DC with our sister, as a stud for our breeding program. He has 15 International Champions and 1 World Champion in his 5 generation pedigree. Several of his puppies are now grown and are currently in our Guardian Program having mini teddybear Goldendoodle puppies. We partner with family members and choose from the very best puppies to introduce into our program. Our current American Golden Retriever mommas also have many of these characteristics. We chose them because out of the American lines, they have similar qualities. We look for blocky, mellow, and great health testing in our parent dogs. We found that most English Cream Golden Retrievers have all three of those qualities. Some American Golden Retrievers have all three, but they are hard to find. Their hip testing has significantly higher scores. The other genetic tests we do on our dogs are often much better with the English. Their temperament is the biggest difference that most people notice between the two types. They are much more mellow. We feel that because our puppies will be family and service dogs instead of hunting or agility dogs, we think that the mellow, laid back temperament of the English Golden will be best for our lines. English creams have a wonderful body style for Teddybear Goldendoodles. They are blocky and thick. This offsets the lean, athletic build of the poodle and perfectly compliments them. They are the parent dog for us! Our Puppies Our puppies are thoroughly and highly socialized. Our puppies are handled daily by children of all ages. Our Goldendoodle puppies are exposed to every household noise because they are raised in a home. They are in the dining room or living room areas so that they are close by all the daily activities in the home. This also gives everyone in the home convenient access to socialize them as part of family life. As they grow, we integrate outside playtime for the puppies part of the day, so that they learn the dog world as well as the people world. A few of our breeding females are active therapy dogs in facility settings. We have sold several diabetic alert dogs DADS and many to be trained for therapy and service. Louis Mo. Our breeding dogs are AKC registered. Pet puppies will not get AKC papers. They will get copies of parents AKC pedigrees. You can get AKC pal papers once your puppy is spayed or neutered. We don't want to just meet the standard for a license, we want to excel expectations. This is required if you have five females. Please, make sure if you get a puppy in Illinois to ask for a copy of the Kennel License. Our adults are provided with an inside area with toys, beds and excellent vet care. A radio plays for them as well. Most prefer to lay up on their Kuranda beds most of the time with their toys or play with a friend. They get their areas cleaned at a minimum of four times a day and disinfectant is used twice a day. Adults get treats, vitamins, enzymes and are fed daily with a probiotic added for health. We have natural and artificial lighting as well. The dogs even have their own washer and dryer to clean blankets, toys and towels daily. Dogs are walked, given access to the pond when weather allows for swimming, let out to run in the open fields, play fetching and work on obedience training. Favorite thing of most is to find a human and crawl into their laps. Yes, our labs even come into our home and crawl into our chairs and onto the couch. Adults are treated monthly for worms, and provided vaccines as recommended by the vet. Once you see a dog with EIC or CNM you will understand why we test our labs to make sure our puppies will never be affected by these diseases that can be prevented by selective breeding. This area is cleaned and disinfected throughout 24 hours a day. If a puppy has an accident it is cleaned up and then disinfected, this is done so that by the time the puppies are six weeks old they are going outside to potty. Going outside by six weeks old to use the bathroom does help when they leave here at eight weeks old and go to their new homes in house breaking. Security cameras monitor puppies all the time and with this we can see if there is anything that needs to be done to them, while still allowing moms to help with the care of the puppies. Moms need to be able to feel comfortable with the puppies and help teach them the first eight weeks. This also helps make a better puppy when it goes home. We use blankets, towels, toys and other items in with the puppies to entertain them and help them get used to things before they go home. They hear vacuums, tractors, trucks, radio, and other noises as well. In summer time they get swimming pools and if weather is nice they run to the pond for adventures. We provide a large play area with toys to entertain them. They get Kuranda beds to sleep on or play king of the bed on. Puppies are given vaccines, vet care, wormings, vitamins, probiotics daily and fed a good quality feed. We start the weaning process at 3. This is puppy food, goats milk, and probiotic mix that we make for them four times a day. We want to provide you with a happy, healthy puppy and believe that the first eight weeks of life here gets them on the right track. Our puppies are so comfortable they very rarely cry and this is due to the care we provide them. A healthy, comfortable puppy is a happy puppy and that makes them great puppies when they get to go home. We also play with them daily, snuggle with them, and end the day with them fast asleep; before we go to bed all the puppies are sleeping safe inside. Puppies get vet care as needed and a full exam before going home. We also microchip all puppies and pay for the fees so that if they are ever lost someone can find the owners or us. Facility The building that we use for the adults is a new building put into use January .It is a beautiful building that we take great pride in owning, please check out our kennel page for pictures. It is climate controlled and the dogs appreciate it. A lot of time, work and details went into the building to make it safe and comfortable for them to use. We wanted to provide them with a safe and clean environment. They have fresh water, food and outdoor access. It has lighting inside to provide them with artificial lighting as well as outside they have natural sunlight. Every dog gets their own Kuranda bed and their own toys. We buy lots of toys here for the dogs and they appreciate that. We believe that if you are going to breed, that care of the adults is just as major as care of the puppies. Care is not just health testing it is also how the animal lives its daily life. Here at Mabry Labs we can sleep soundly knowing our dogs are safe from any bad weather, healthy and happy. The building we use for the puppies went in in March .It is sectioned off inside for each mother, so that moms feel secure with their babies. This makes it so that mom stays calm and relaxed instead of worrying if another animal is going to get her babies. It is climate controlled. We take moms for walks and playtime away from the pups so they get free time as well. Feed is never out of the bowls, so moms can eat what they want when they want. Probiotics are given daily with vitamins. Blankets, towels and toys are given inside and cleaned daily. All floors are disinfected every time we leave the building. There are mats that have disinfectant in them to make sure that our shoes are disinfected every time we enter. We also use disposable booties for our shoes when we enter puppy play areas. As of we have added on a meet and greet building. This is a secure building set up for puppies to play and interact with people no matter the weather outside. It is heated, cooled, has tv, radio, couch, toys, basically it is a house. My office is in it, so that I can spend time working and playing with the pups. We did in order to have a place that would be easy to keep disinfected between people. As much as we welcome people into our home a home can not be cleaned the same as this building. From the moment they are born I am watching the pups and when they start going into the garden I'm looking to see who is the most adventurous, or the problem solver, who is holding back, who is startled at noises, who is jumping on the other dogs heads and who prefers chasing the toys. I watch to see who is eating well, who is not a big eater, and how they respond to my adult dogs. This forms a picture along with the temperament of the parents as too how I see the pups developing. I ask all homes to bring a list of questions and I can answer them as we play with the pups. One of the most important tasks I do is with families of primary school aged children, because at this age children can be erratic, lively and noisy. There can often be a puppy in a litter who just does not respond to young children. So no matter how much you like the puppy's sweet eyes, their cute paws etc.Instead I want your children to clap, make a noise, sing a song, run up and down the garden. We want to choose from the puppies that are engaging physically and with eye contact with your children. This is why colour and sex will never ever be part of the puppy choosing process. The only time sex of a puppy comes into forefront is if the home have an existing dog and we need to choose on the sex that best fits. Occasionally I will see a puppy in the litter who is exceptionally bright, a natural problem solver and very active. This puppy will not suit a less confident, first time dog owning home, but the puppy would suit an experienced home, or a motor-homing family, an active home or someone who wants to be involved with agility and advanced training classes. If I have a puppy that is quiet and seeks people contact over dog interaction, then this pup would suit a first time owning home, a calm family, but not one with other dogs or lively children. I do advise my new families on temperament and potential suitability of each litter, plus my recommendations for particular puppies with the reasons why. The final choice being with the new family unless I see a reason why not due to temperament match. I never reserve puppies on colour and sex, it is the temperament and suitability between puppy and the new home that is my top priority. If it ever occurs that a puppy is to be kept back as a breeding potential then the breeder will always have first choice across the litter. One issue with every single litter is that the homes who are on the final day to choose become stressed. They feel that they may not get the best puppy; that they will get the wrong puppy, the temperament will not be suitable, the puppy will have one eye and three legs. Absolute rubbish. Puppies have different temperaments and so are suitable for different homes. As a breeder I am constantly amazed how my top puppy is usually last or second last to be chosen, or the puppy that was nearly picked first is then last to be allocated. All my puppies are healthy, they are strong, they are well raised, they are bomb proof and are exceptionally well socialised. At every single puppy choosing weekend over the last 10years I have had homes say, I wish I was further down the list to choose because it's so hard being first as all the pups are great. Human nature never want to have the last of anything.What appeals to one home, will not appeal to another. The reason why most breeders allocate is so they do not have to deal with a home thinking they had the last puppy and managing expectation emails, plus they do not have full weekends of people coming through their home to choose pups. It's breeder convenience first and foremost. Once pups have been chosen, I will then microchip the pups in the next few days. Then at 7 weeks old they have their vet check and 1st vaccination. Three days before puppy collection I hold a litter Zoom meeting where I can answer all last minute questions and give final tips which everyone can be involved in. In looking for a male pup, check to be sure that both testicles have descended into the scrotum. Six week old pups should have both testicles and it is not true that they will come down later. In order to have an idea if the pup is anemic, you can lift the lips and see if the gums and tongue are pink unless the mouth is black and not white. It is possible to get an idea about the immunities that the pup may have by asking the breeder what types of vaccines were used for the mother of the pups. Also inquire if the pups have been treated with any medications at all and get the names, amounts and dates of any treatments. Ask if the parents have had any medical problems and how old the parents and grandparents are which will give you an idea of what kind of longevity they have. Be sure to see the parents if possible. Try to see the pups at the breeder's place and observe how clean and healthy the other animals look. Be ware of people that want to meet you half way to sell you a pup. Consider getting in writing that you will have hours to take the pup to your veterinarian and have it checked over completely. It may be advisable to get a statement writing that if any contagious or congenital problems are found, you will receive your money back in full and not just be given another pup from the same litter or breeder. Many reputable breeders will already have such documents available. Remember that the incubation period of many of the common puppy diseases are 6 or more days in length. This means that even if your veterinarian finds no problems during the purchase examination, the pup still could break with disease in a week or so. Discuss this possibility with the breeder and have a written agreement as to how such a problem would be handled financially. The only problems I personally have seen with these dogs are that some have allergies. Finally, purchasing a new pup is a big commitment in time, emotion and money, so be prepared to live up to that commitment. Have a veterinarian picked out and consult with them about the purchase. Make sure you can provide for the necessary vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, heart worm prevention, de-worming, flea control and quality food that will be required for the life of your pup. We do not have extra staff to manage children and it is typically very hectic during puppy pick ups. How to Greet a Puppy or Dog You never get a second chance to make a first impression! Make sure to adopt these simple tips so that you and your puppy get off to a great start. Tips for Success while Driving with a New Puppy The ride to their new homes will likely be the longest stressful period that the puppies have experienced so far. You and I have known about this day for a long time, but there is no way to communicate this to them until it happens. Some do better with this change than others. Be patient and loving and let your puppy know that they are secure and safe. Make this trip as calm and relaxing as possible. If your drive home is more than 2 hours, plan to bring a water bottle and small bowl so that your puppy does not get dehydrated. If your drive is longer, you may need to stop and let your puppy relieve himself. We recommend very clean areas especially churches. Another option to stopping is to bring enough disposable pee pads to spread out in your car. This is the safest as you will know exactly what surfaces your puppy has been exposed to. It is absolutely best to have at least two of you in the car on the ride home. One person to focus on driving and the other focused on the puppy. Some people like to have a crate set up as well so that the puppy has another option during the drive. If you purchased a snuggle puppy, it would be good to have this available as well. We will have a small cloth sprayed with Pet Remedy Calming Spray to help them stay calm. Keep your car AC on as cold as possible as this helps keep your puppy most comfortable and usually helps with car sickness. A smooth ride is also helpful. If your puppy falls asleep, keep driving. The only time you need to stop is if your puppy is getting really squirmy and fussy. Your puppy will only have eaten breakfast on pick up day. Be sure your puppy goes potty in our yard before you leave. This will help get you a further in your travels home. Do not worry if your puppy does not eat well the first week. Let them pace themselves. Some eat great, some just barely eat. They know what they need and will likely eat lighter just due to the change. The appetite will usually pick up after the first week. We will ask the families with the longest drive to select their times first. Most of the time, we schedule puppy pick ups between and 1pm and allow each family approx. Avoid kibble made with grain-based foods. To identify the kibble content, look at the first five or six ingredients listed on the bag. Fillers like corn, wheat, oats and soy are not recommended for dogs because they would never eat these foods in the wild. A diet of these grains eventually can cause allergies, weight issues and other health problems for your dog. Your Australian Labradoodle should eat two meals a day, usually one to two and a half cups of dry food at each feeding. You can moisten the kibble with a spoonful or two of canned food. The first home meal, however, should be a light one because of the changes in environment. A spoonful of plain pumpkin will help with any intestinal distress that loosens up the bowels.
