While each has their own unique build and look, they all share common denominators. You can recognize most Bully breeds by their stout bodies and short muzzles. American Bulldogs, in particular, have developed quite a bit over time, branching off into other subgroups. When it comes to breeding for specific purposes, a single breed can take on different markings or body structures. The 5 Types of American Bulldogs 1. Johnson breeding lineage. These dogs were bred during the World War II era. They have a classic underbite and boxy skulls, giving them that distinct Bulldog look. This line is stout and heavy. Because of their broad, muscular bodies and short muzzles, they are often confused with other Bully breeds, such as the English Bulldog. They stand between 23 and 27 inches at the shoulder. They are incredibly protective and pleasing as household companions. Their low activity levels can often lead to laziness and obesity. They are friendly and even considered goofballs. They came into fruition as a cross between the Johnson American Bulldog and southern Bulldogs, like the White English. They are known as the standard or performance type because of their power and strength. This bloodline is much swifter and physically driven than the Johnsons. They are athletically built and have a longer muzzle. They also have long legs, making them tall and lean in stature. They are generally between 22 and 27 inches, at shoulder height. Because they were bred for work, they require a much more stimulating environment. These dogs are often confused with the American Pit Bull Terrier due to their similar body structure and temperament. Rather than sharing the classic underbite, this line has what is referred to as the reverse scissor bite. Scotts are better suited for individuals with active lifestyles. This typically involves being physically destructive with personal property. These physically capable dogs are made to fight and bred solely for this purpose. They are also considered a performance line, but for more sinister purposes. They were developed in the s by Joe Painter and several others. However, they began to thrive and rise in popularity over time, thinning out this defect. These dogs are stocky, responsive, and trainable. They weigh an average of 55 to 75 pounds. So, they are small in stature but bulky all over. While the Old Southern White and the White English are thought of as being the same dog, there are two variants here as well. There are a Bulldog and a Mastiff style , which creates subtle differences in structure that may not be highly noticeable to the untrained eye. These dogs are commonly seen in the South, though they have been fizzling out over time. Even though they may have been a part of modern lines, they should not partake in breeding with current American Bulldogs. The American Bulldog has come quite far from their beginning points. While we do respect the achievements of more dog show oriented fellow breeders offering great praise to some of them , and while Blasco dogs have indeed stood in the winner's circle, such beauty contest victories are not our focus. Poorly socialized, carelessly trained dogs are a high risk liability LIKELY to bite strangers in an effort to control them by forced herding and attack. Bulloxers are gentle and affectionate hybrid dogs known for their loyalty to their owner and family. However, they reach maturity at a slow pace and may behave like untrained puppies for years. Like my Fly, Darkus is also just a fantastic mother to her puppies, with lots of milk, lots of patience, and doesn't become emaciated when she's nursing. This pic of Darkus was taken just the other day, less than 10 days after her puppies quit nursing, and she's already nearly all the way snapped back and tightened up again. That's a very healthy mama trait we really like around here. Dry mouth and no eye leakage whatsoever. Slim and streamlined as a serious running dog, but with hard, rippling muscle as the traditional southern catchdog he is. He's sweet, intelligent, very laid back and mellow, but a solid home protection dog nonetheless. Boogie's attitude with both strange male people, and strange male dogs is if you don't want none, don't start none, let's just be friends.But if you do want some, we call him Bad Boy Boogie for a reason. Boogie will light you up right now - on command, or self-initiated in protection scenarios. He can also do better than a 6' standing jump, move faster than the human eye can follow, and gladly run full out for miles. In that pic below Boogie is crouching, watching a raven eating his dog food that he's crept up on quiet as can be. When it saw him and flew away, Boogie jumped straight up in the air and caught it mid-flight. It's unreal how many ravens this dog has caught in flight, and then the Raven was dog food. Like I said, the quintessential Scott type American Bulldog. About the Litter Generally: The litter is happy, healthy, friendly -- mom being a purebred Johnson type American Bulldog, dad being a purebred Scott type American Bulldog. If you're simply looking for a great pet dog for your family, there's really no reason to favor one over the other. They're all great with kids, well socialized and very laid back and mellow. So while they are Hybrid type purebred American Bulldogs, bred between Scott and Johnson types, most look like straight Scott type American Bulldogs -- longer noses with much better breathing than the Johnson types, good streamlined structure built for speed, and very athletic. Care Intervention: Nope. Nobody required any special aid as infant puppies. Nobody presents any form of special need or health concern. All puppies are highly robust, active, and strong. Differences between these puppies is subtle, the darker colored ones having only very slightly shorter noses than the others, but still clearly very athletic Scott type noses and bodies. High Elevation Lung Capacity: Blasco puppies also all have higher adapted lung capacity than most puppies - making for true athletes, if you wish. We're at over 9, feet in elevation so all of our puppies share this same advantage, being unusually long winded little brutes. It's why Olympians train in Colorado Springs, and our location is way higher into the clouds than Colorado Springs. A proper dog house and some straw are fine if you're wanting a dog that will spend most of its time outside. We hope that's not what you do. The White Dog Question: Understand, while it is true that some only some white breeds of dog, some Dogo Argentinos, some American Bulldogs, most Spitz and other breeds of white dogs do sometimes have difficulty with sun, that is not the case with these dogs, or their parents, or grand parents. All of them have been out in blazing sun for over a month, at over 9, feet, in Colorado that has over days of sun a year, puppies being tested to assure that there are no sun issues. There aren't. They love the sun. No problems whatsoever. All of them male and female will finish out at right around 24" to 27" inches tall at the withers measuring from ground to top of shoulders , with the boys taller and thicker than the girls. However, both mom and dad carry the genes for larger dogs, so it's technically possible you could get a genetic throwback to that and end up with a pound dog -- probably not, but still possible. Regarding life expectancy, assuming good protein uptake, exercise and good general health, 15 years is fairly likely. They are all very sweet, already really love and enjoy kids, and all are very, very smart, making for easy training, and years of deeply bonded relationship. Fact is I always say that we don't breed dog park candidates, and in this case, I'm thinking I actually might have. They really are just unusually sweet and laid back for American Bulldogs that tend to have a bit more edge coming from my yards. Send deposits quick, make appointments, or you may be too late. I figure that if you can get a couple grand up fast to buy a puppy, you can also probably pay for a potential life saving measure later, should the dog tangle with a mountain lion, or swallow a toy Tonka truck or something. Somewhere between nine and fourteen months of age the adult coat will grow in. At this transition time the coat will need lots of attention in order to keep the length. Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age. The doodle with a hair coat has the same wonderful temperament and personality as the doodle with the non shedding coat but is not good for a person with allergies or for a family that has chosen the doodle because of his non-shedding qualities. It is hard to get a brush through the curls if you leave it too long. Without this regular brushing right down to the skin mats will form next to the skin. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars. Grooming For Every Doodle No matter what the doodle coat there is grooming required. This can either be done by an interested family member or your groomer. Ears Fur grows out of the ears of a labradoodle. It begins its journey deep in the ear canal. If ears are not keep clean and dry dirt and wax can lead to severe ear infections. You can tell when the doggie has hot ears that there is a problem and a trip to the vet will be in order. Some doodles love to dig and have very thick fur in their ears. This means it could be a good idea to pluck the fur from deep in the ear. It is not difficult to take tweezers or better still a hemostat and pluck out the fur on a regular basis. I must say I almost swooned the first time I did it myself but it does get easier. Unless you are an expert it is a two person job, one to hold the dog and promise treats, the other to pluck. Your vet can recommend an ear drying powder which will keep the ears in good health. Of course, your groomer will do the ear plucking for you. If you take your dog every six weeks she should be fine. Nails Unless dogs travel on a stone river bed a couple of kilometers every single day they need their nails trimmed. Our Labradoodles have dew claws and they will always need attention. Nail trimming should be done every few weeks. It is however another wonderful thing your professional groomer will do. The Poodle, on the other hand, is one of the rare working breeds with a single layer coat. Are Adult Labradoodle Coats Hypoallergenic? The fleece type of adult Labradoodle coat will often be best for individuals that suffer from allergies. But, this will still need regular grooming to control shedding dander. And, regardless of which adult coat your Doodle has, your dog will still need to shed out their puppy coat first. Suddenly, you will find tufts and clumps of shed dog hair everywhere, where before there was none. This can start as early as six months. So, watch out for shed fur from this age. It could start anywhere from six to nine months, or even slightly outside of this range. The puppy coat has to be completely shed out to allow the adult coat to grow in. That would leave your Labradoodle defenseless against pests, the elements, and injury. Instead, their coat will shed in stages, over time. This is why it can take up to a year and a half for the puppy coat to fully shed out and the adult coat to fully grow in. Depending on the adult coat your Labradoodle inherits, these hairs may be long and straight hair coat , long and loosely curly fleece coat , or short and tightly curled wool coat. In most cases, a Labradoodle will have fully lost their puppy coat and grown into their adult one between the ages of 12 and 15 months. But, there is no exact timer that buzzes the moment this process is finished.
