This is actually what causes the drool when they are awake and when they are sleeping. When should you be concerned with your English bulldogs sleep? Signs of viral, bacterial infections or cancer can include change in sleeping patterns along with some of the following: Bathroom accidents inside the house Change or loss of appetite Not playing as frequently. Just about every breed sleeps for at least 12 hours a night, but bulldogs may need a bit longer. The amount of sleep a bulldog needs depends highly on age, but there are some key underlying genetic factors. Reason 1: All Dogs Need A Lot Of Sleep Different species of animals sleep an incredibly diverse amount of time per day, with bats sleeping as much as 20 hours a day and giraffes sleeping as little as 2! Even so, the amount that dogs sleep per day is still considered to be quite a bit compared to similar species. Unlike dogs, wolves are nocturnal and sleep only hours a day. In the process of domestication, dogs developed a diurnal sleeping pattern to match their human counterparts. Like us, all dogs sleep roughly 8 hours a night. Daily naps, on the other hand, are irregular and split throughout the day. One theory for all these extra naps is that dogs get less REM sleep during each sleep cycle. REM rapid eye movement sleep is one of two major types of basic sleep for you and your dog. It might seem unintuitive, but the deepest part of sleep is actually when we are the most active! This is the phase where dogs dream and the part that makes them feel rested in the morning. Truthfully, a good chunk of the time we think they are asleep bulldogs are simply lounging around. Some may consider their bulldogs lazy, but taking it easy is simply in their blood. English Bulldogs originated in the 13th century after pugs and mastiffs were crossed to create a breed for fighting bulls. Thankfully, bull-baiting was outlawed in England in the s, leading to bulldogs nearly becoming an extinct breed while other bully breeds grew in popularity. Devoted lovers of the sturdy breed began selecting dogs with gentle and sweet natures for the explicit purpose of making the bulldog a family pet. Bulldogs still retain their brave nature from their fighting days which can sometimes if you need a guard dog but have instead been bred for a sluggish yet sweet temperament for nearly two centuries. Accordingly, Bulldogs have been placed in the non-sporting group by the American Kennel Club and are biologically predisposed to be less active than their working counterparts. For as adorable and distinctive as their faces make them, bulldogs have a host of health issues because of it. The broad, short-snouted head shape that bulldogs have is referred to as brachycephalic. These types of dogs have difficulty with heat regulation and proper breathing, so even moderate amounts of exercise wear them out and even put them at risk for heat-related illness. Thier big head can also make it difficult to find a properly sized collar , too! As goofy and fun-loving as they are, bulldogs usually need to end playtime with a nice nap to cool off and get proper airflow. Reason 4: Young Bulldogs Need Extra Sleep To Grow Since puppies are famous for being playful and energetic, you may be wondering how on Earth they sleep hours a day. But anyone who has been around a bulldog puppy knows that they can go from running around the room to snoring at the drop of a hat- no matter what the time! According to veterinarian Jeff Warber in an interview with Yahoo! News , puppies experience rapid muscular, mental, and physical growth. This makes play and exercise important for the healthy development of a young bulldog in every way, which wears them out quickly. With all the food that they eat and the growing that they do, bulldog puppies need quite a bit of shut-eye throughout the day! Reason 5: Older Dogs Need More Sleep In its later years, a bulldog will likely sleep more as part of the aging process. Senior dogs may sleep hours a day, and even hours a day is considered normal. Even perfectly healthy elderly dogs will become significantly less active throughout the day. Bulldogs are unfortunately susceptible to sleep disorders— namely, sleep apnea. Of course, there are a few more common causes to consider before jumping to the conclusion that your dog has this issue. Reason 1: An Irregular Sleep Schedule Although your dog might not be able to read your watch, it still has a biological clock! Like most mammals, dogs have a circadian rhythm that acts as a hour timer to regulate sleep. In wild dogs, this pattern would be synchronized with the natural light pattern of the rising and setting sun. Domestic dogs may not share the same sleep patterns as humans, but we often sleep at the same time. This is fine when we have regular sleep, but life events or unexpected changes may require us to wake and sleep at odd times. All of us have to adjust our sleep-schedules every now and then, but frequent changes can be problematic for both you and your bulldog. Reason 2: Sickness A sleepy bulldog is by no means guaranteed to be sick, but lethargy is a common sign of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Extreme tiredness is often an early sign of parvovirus or other infections. In these cases, it is often paired with other symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, abnormal appetite and sudden weight-loss. Metabolic disorders can also cause tiredness and present with a variety of symptoms. These include changes in appetite, changes in weight, and excessive thirst. There are plenty of other possible medical causes for tiredness in your pup , including anemia, poisoning, and even canine depression. Narrowing down the cause from dozens of potential health issues requires the aid of a vet for proper identification and treatment. As cute and funny as snoring can be every now and again, it can indicate sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disorder. Sleep apnea is when a dog frequently stops breathing in their sleep and is jolted awake throughout the night. This is as scary as it is dangerous for your pup. Due to their easily obstructed airways, sleep apnea in bulldogs is so common that they are often used as models for it in studies. That said, sleep apnea is preventable in every breed. In humans and dogs alike, the biggest predictors for sleep apnea are obesity and old age. Keeping your bulldog fit can go a long way in saving its health and its sleep. Along with many others, narcolepsy, insomnia, and REM behavior disorders are all conditions your dog could face. Defined simply as a disorder that can make falling and staying asleep difficult, insomnia is a multifaceted condition. Underlying causes such as arthritis pain , nighttime incontinence, and stress are often culprits, but insomnia can be a diagnosis in and of itself. Insomnia often develops in senior dogs and can be the result of diseases such as early Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If your dog is showing signs of insomnia, a vet visit for proper diagnosis is in order. Reason 5: Neurological Conditions Poor sleep may be the result of two major neurological conditions— narcolepsy and REM sleep disorder. As opposed to sleep apnea, narcolepsy is most commonly observed in puppies. Narcolepsy is a genetic disorder that results in abnormal neurological patterns and low production of hypocretin, a hormone responsible for alertness. A narcoleptic dog will fall asleep seemingly out of nowhere, especially when excited. Often, narcolepsy is paired with another disorder known as cataplexy, which is the temporary paralysis of your dog. Narcolepsy is an incurable and life-long condition, but is neither dangerous nor uncomfortable for your pup in most circumstances. Even so, if you suspect your dog has narcolepsy, you should speak to your veterinarian for further information. REM behavior disorders have a less understood cause than narcolepsy and can develop at any age. All dogs let out a sleep-woof or twitch at times, but REM sleep disorders are visibly more extreme than this and far more likely to disrupt sleep. Below is an example of a dog with a REM movement disorder. If you were constantly running in your sleep, you would be exhausted too! REM sleep disorders may not be entirely curable, but prescribed medicine from your vet such as clonazepam can do wonders in reducing symptoms. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to help your dog get enough shut-eye. Set a Schedule Dogs may have adjusted their sleep schedules to match ours somewhat, but at the end of the day there are some key differences between the sleep of us and our canine friends. Dogs have polyphasic sleep, meaning their sleep is split up throughout the day. Usually, the best way to do this for everyone involved is for you to have a set bedtime as well. Humans have a pretty elastic sleep cycle. Giving your dog a comfortable environment before it goes to sleep is important to ensure quality of sleep and avoid interruptions. Environmental cues such as location or events can easily shape biological functions for our canine friends. Giving your bulldog a designated bed and area to sleep in may help signal to your dog that sleep time has begun. For bulldogs, overheating is an uncomfortable and disruptive possibility. Keeping them in a cool but not cold! One way to ensure they sleep at the correct temperature is to get them a specific bed. An elevated bed such as this or a dog bed with cooling gel like this can help keep your pup cool throughout the night. When their environment is dark, a dog produces melatonin to promote sleep. Keeping the room dark before and during sleep is always a good idea. Despite previous theories, this cohabitation rarely disturbed sleep and was therapeutic and psychologically healthy for both parties involved. As a brachycephalic breed, bulldogs are prone to snoring in their sleep , and can certainly slobber quite a bit. Not to mention their moderate shedding can decorate your sheets in an unwanted layer of fur. Thankfully, a protective bed cover for pets, like this great waterproof cover , can help keep your bed clean if you want your pooch to snooze with you. That said, the choice to let your dog sleep with you or not is entirely yours! As long as you can handle the snoring, sleeping with your bulldog in the room may help you both sleep better. Unfortunately, b ulldogs are also prone to heat exhaustion and breathing difficulties , so vigorous exercise is a no-go. Light to moderate exercise with plenty of water and a cool environment can not only keep your bulldog healthy but also improve its sleep! A fully exercised bulldog is a worn-out bulldog, so catching some healthy Zs and getting REM sleep is easy after a workout. Conclusion Dogs sleep a lot throughout the day due to their polyphasic sleeping patterns. Frequent naps throughout the day are to be expected with any dog, and bulldogs are particularly prone to spending much of the day napping. Of course, if your dog is acting strangely or sleeping more out of nowhere, contacting your vet is a good idea. But as long as your bulldog seems happy and healthy, let a sleeping dog lie! By: Author Jennifer Seegmiller Whether you are a first-time Bulldog owner or a long-time lover of this energetic and intelligent breed you may wonder what is normal for sleeping patterns and behaviors for your Bulldog. I did some research and reached out to other Dachshund owners and this is what I found out. Adult Bulldogs will sleep on average hours a day. Bulldog puppies will sleep hours a day in a 24 hour period. How much your Bulldog sleeps depends a lot on their personalities. Bulldogs also tend to develop sleep habits similar to their owners. If you are fit and active, your Bulldog will be also. If you are relaxed and laid-back, chances are your Bulldog will be similar to you. Continue reading to find out. Newborns generally nurse every 2 hours but even while doing so they will have their eyes shut and look as though they are eating in their sleep. As they grow, they will slowly start to spend more time awake. Around 3 weeks old they will have around hours of active time a day broken up into small spurts of energy and exploring their world. Bulldog Puppy Sleep Patterns Puppies are quickly growing and changing. They need plenty of sleep to fuel and recharge their growing bodies. From months old, Bulldog puppies will generally sleep around hours in a hour period. This includes sleeping at night and daytime naps. Your puppy will sleep in longer stretches at night but will still need to get up to relieve its small bladder and stretch. He may even have a burst of energy and seem like he wants to play. With some patience and guidance, your puppy can learn to sleep through the night by 4 months old, maybe even sooner. Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. Older puppies from around months old will sleep about hours throughout a 24 hour period. At this point, they should be more active and inquisitive during the day and will be better about sleeping through the night in hour stretches. They will also take multiple naps during the day, as well as times of rest when they appear to be just lying around, but somewhat alert as well as high energy awake time when they will want to play and train. Bulldog puppies will generally sleep through the night by about 4 months old, but it can range from 8 or 9 weeks old all the way through 6 months old. Some puppies may also go through a sleep regression when going through a growth spurt or teething. Towards the end of this article, we will discuss those in the heading sleep problems and solutions. Fun Fact: Senior dogs, as well as puppies, tend to twitch more in their sleep! This is due to a part of their brain called the Pons which regulates muscles and keeps them still while they sleep. Adult Bulldog Sleep Patterns Your adult Bulldogs will normally sleep around hours in a hr period, but more as he ages. In this study, researchers found that older and middle-aged dogs slept more during the day than young adult dogs. This was because they took more naps, not because their naps were longer. They tend to run out of energy and need to rest more often than the younger group. Older and middle-aged dogs also slept more at night than younger dogs because they had long stretches of sleep at night waking up later and woke up fewer times during the night. A big factor was how active and attentive the owners were. Bulldogs typically have a little less energy than other dog breeds. This means they may sleep more often than your other dogs if they have pet brothers and sisters. Some owners I talked to did say that their Bulldogs tend to sleep more when left home alone for long amounts of time, like when their owner is at work. This is most likely because there is no one there to engage them with play or give them a reason to get up and move around. So, as you can see their sleep schedule greatly depend on the kinds of habits you develop for your dog. Senior Bulldogs Sleep Patterns Your Bulldog is considered a senior sometime between 7 and 10 years old. At this time, you will probably start to see your dog slowly increasing the amount of time it is resting and sleeping. Senior Bulldogs will sleep hrs a day on average as they get to be years old and older, they could be sleeping up to 18 hrs a day. At an older age, your Bulldog sleep patterns may change as well. For older Bulldogs, these could be signs of more serious issues such as dementia, arthritis, hypothyroidism, or other conditions associated with older age. Your Bulldog may be waking up more at night because its bladder is getting older and they need to use the potty more often. You can try and help with this by taking them out right before bed and limiting their water intake just before bed as well. Many factors could contribute to your Bulldog sleeping a lot. Puppies and senior dogs sleep more than adult Bulldogs. Stress, anxiety, boredom, diet, or disease can all be factors for why your dog is sleeping more than usual. In most cases, it is normal for dogs to sleep 12 or more hours a day. If you are concerned about your Bulldogs sleeping patterns it is always a good idea to talk to your vet. Lethargy or a lack of energy and enthusiasm can be a sign that your dog is being affected by something more than just laziness or a bit tired. If this describes your dog, then definitely consult with your vet. Many diseases and age-related problems can come with a change in sleeping patterns. Some dogs will sleep more in the wintertime because the days are shorter and colder. You can read this article I wrote to learn more about that. Do Dogs Hibernate? Winter Weather Questions Answered If you think your dog is sleeping a lot because of boredom you can always make an effort to have more playtime and exercise sessions with your dog. You could hire a dog walker we have a neighborhood teen that loves to walk dogs for a very reasonable rate! Or join a fun program you can work on together like this popular brain training for dogs course! Because Bulldogs have such a flat face and short nose common to the brachycephalic breed their tongue has less space inside their mouth. Their tongue may hang out while sleeping because it is hot and they are trying to keep cool, or they may be completely relaxed. For the most part, it is completely normal for your French or English Bulldog to sleep with its tongue hanging out. If your dog struggles to keep its tongue in its mouth it could be suffering from something called Hanging Tongue Syndrome. Sleep Problems and Solutions for Bulldog Puppies and Adults If you are struggling with getting your Bulldog to settle down and sleep at night you are not alone. Things that may be making this challenging can range from crying or whining at night, waking up in the middle of the night, struggling to settle down, or waking up too early in the morning. Some dogs will start to sleep well through the night then a few weeks or months later start to wake up again. This is called a sleep regression and can be normal. Like human babies when puppies are teething or going through growth spurts it could cause them to wake up at night or have difficulties sleeping. This routine can include using the restroom, bringing the noise level down, dimming the light, creating a relaxing and calm atmosphere. Give them plenty of exercise: Even though your dog may be pretty chill Bulldogs need plenty of stimulation and exercise each day. At least an hour a day for exercise should be set aside for your dog. The best time for a good exercise session is about 2 hours before bedtime. Try to include high cardio exercise as well and engaging brain activities so that your Bulldog will be both physically tired as well as mentally tired. If your dog sleeps in his own bed, or in a crate, having something that smells like you and a small stuffed animal to snuggle with can help him feel more safe and secure. This is especially true for puppies. Try changing meal times or limiting food and water: Take up their water after a certain time of the evening. If your Bulldog seems to need a bathroom break in the middle of the night all the time you can try changing his meal time to be a few hours earlier so he will get the poop out before bed or a few hours later so he can hold it until tomorrow. Either way, you may want to slowly adjust the time of his meals to see if that will help with the late-night bathroom breaks. If early morning waking is a problem, try figuring out what it is that may be waking them up? Is the sun coming up? Try adding some darkening curtains. Are there noises such as birds or early morning traffic? Try adding some white noise by using a noise machine like this one from Amazon. Amazon affiliate link. All it takes is some investigative work to try and figure out what may be causing the problem. If nothing seems to be working, your dog has changed his sleep patterns suddenly, he seems very lethargic and low on energy all the time, or he has other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his stool, or other concerns then you should take him to the vet immediately to get checked out. If you have a puppy and all its needs are met and it is still crying just remember it is common for it to whine and cry especially for the first week or so that you have him in your home. You can try a soothing stuffy like this one from Amazon affiliate link. An older dog who is new to your home may experience this as well. If you must check on him make sure that the lights stay dim, and you are as un-intrusive as you can be. If you are working with your puppy to sleep in their own bed or crate, make sure to not give in and then expect smooth sailing after that. You need to start the expectations as you mean to go forward. Bulldog Snoring and Sleep Apnea Light snoring in your Bulldog is usually not something to worry about, but heavy snoring may be a bigger problem. Heavy snoring may indicate sleep problems which makes it difficult for your dog to breathe and can, if left untreated lead to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Sleep apnea can be dangerous for your Bulldog, but there are some things you can do to help prevent your dog from snoring. Make sure your dog maintains a healthy weight. Overweight dogs are more at risk for snoring. Keep your dogs bed washed and clean. This will help prevent build up of allergens. Get your dog an orthopedic bed with a side affiliate link on it so you can prop your dog up. Teach him to sleep that way. Make sure the room is not hot and stuffy. Use an air purifier affiliate link to filter airborne allergens. This can help add white noise for you as well if your dog sleeps in the same room as you. Try a cool mist humidifier affiliate link. Staying hydrated helps them have a moist nose that can help with better airflow. Watch for nasal discharge or other signs of infection. Make sure they have healthy teeth. A tooth infection can lead to an abscess that limits air flow. Get help from your vet. Being under the covers provides your Bulldog with a place that feels safe and secure like a small den. In general, it is safe for your Bulldog to sleep under the covers or under a blanket, but special care should be taken to make sure that he always has an escape route. Keeping their face un-covered can help. Where Should My Bulldog Sleep? Can Bulldogs Sleep Alone? Your dog can sleep alone but being the social cuddly breed they are would much prefer to sleep with or near you. They are a very loyal and social breed and feel much more comfortable being near their owner or another friend while sleeping. Sleeping near others helps them to feel part of a pack which will help them feel more secure and loved as well as bonded to their family. Can Bulldogs Sleep Outside? It is not recommended that Bulldogs sleep outside. Bulldogs thrive on relationships and being close to their owners, sleeping outdoors can be lonely and dangerous for this social breed. Their coats are also not thick enough to keep them very warm in cold temperatures. Sleeping outdoors can be dangerous as Bulldogs are too small to fight off predators. Do Bulldogs Like to Sleep with You? Bulldogs generally love to be close to their owners. They are very affectionate and cuddly and if allowed can enjoy sleeping in your bed next to you or in the same room as you at night. They tend to thrive on connection and will also likely follow you around the house during the day. There are a lot of great benefits you could get by letting your Bulldog sleep with you. Here are some listed below. Eases stress and anxiety. It takes a great deal of energy to grow and develop so getting a healthy amount of sleep is the perfect way to allow the body to recover. As your dog ages and matures though the amount of sleep required each day will typically level off. That is because it takes a great deal of energy to grow and develop into a strong, adult dog. Expect an English Bulldog puppy to need anywhere from 18 to 20 hours of sleep per day. Of course, a puppy is not going to sleep for 20 hours straight, but rather break up his or her sleep schedule into short naps. Most puppies will sleep for about 30 minutes at a time to get a quick recharge. If your puppy has had a big day, both physically or mentally, expect your puppy to be a little extra tired the following day to allow it to recover. A good indicator that shows your puppy is growing up and reaching adulthood is the amount of sleep he or she will require in a day. As your puppy ages, he or she will start to explore the world more and will slowly require less frequent naps to keep him or her fueled for an active day. Usually, an adult English Bulldog will require about 12 to 14 hours of sleep a day in order to stay healthy. While this is a marked difference from the amount a puppy needs, it is still the most sleep required compared to any other dog breed. From the start, the temperament of an English Bulldog is not particularly rambunctious or lively, but the physical structure and body make up of an English Bulldog contribute to an adult English Bulldog needing plenty of rest to recover and stay healthy. Senior 7 Years and Older True with many dog breeds, as your English Bulldog becomes older he or she will slow down and require a little more sleep than when he or she was a healthy adult. A senior English Bulldog will usually need about 16 to 18 hours of sleep, which is more than half the day. Senior dogs tend to move a little more slowly than a healthy adult, requiring more energy to perform simple tasks. As the body starts to age it can take more energy to simply walk and move about. This is completely normal for an aging dog, but may become more apparent with an English Bulldog since they require so much sleep to begin with. While it is true that all dogs require sleep to help them recharge and recovery after physical and mental exertion, the English Bulldog is a special case, sometimes requiring more than half the day to feel fully rested and recovered. There are a few reasons why this particular breed of dog needs so much sleep to stay healthy. First, the physical structure of the English Bulldog does not lend itself to an energy efficient build. With short leg, a barrel chest, and a compact face and nose, this dog is not built for physical exertion. While a young English Bulldog will have energy to romp and play for a short while, this dog is better for short bursts of energy rather than sustain long efforts of physical exertion. Further, the size of the English Bulldog will dictate how much sleep is required, with larger dogs often needing more sleep. Secondly though, the temperament and nature of this dog also lends itself to being a solid snoozer. With a calm demeanor, not easily excited, the English Bulldog is comfortable and confident with his or her surroundings. This means that he or she should be friendly, calm, and will generally get along with other people, children, and pets. With a calm and confident temperament, it is alright for a bulldog to sleep for large portions of the day, not easily excitable or overly energetic. When Is It Too Much? If you are thinking about owning an English Bulldog it is important to understand that this dog requires several hours of sleep each day in order to stay healthy. However, when is it too much sleep? If there is a distinct change in how much your pet sleeps it may be time to alert a veterinarian. Suddenly going from an engaged and active dog, to one that sleeps for hours on end, suddenly can be a sign of a larger problem. Alternatively, monitoring a dog that suddenly has an anxious demeanor with little sleep throughout the day can also indicate a larger issue. Be particularly mindful when monitoring how much your pet is eating and drinking, his or her interaction with other people and pets, and how your pet is moving to be aware of any concerning health signs and symptoms. Knowing the baseline for your pet and what healthy behavior normally is will help you determine if a trip to the vet is in order.

By Barri J. Morrison, DVM on Jun. Today, the German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are in the herding breed group, which means they are high-energy and love having a job or an outlet for regular exercise. They are known for their confidence, loyalty, and bravery, as well as their ability to thrive with expert levels of dog training and obedience. German Shepherds are commonly used as working dogs in the military and police for patrolling, bomb sniffing, and search and rescue. This large dog breed has an average weight ranging from 65—90 pounds. They are typically 22—26 inches tall with a life expectancy of 10—12 years. Caring for a German Shepherd German Shepherds are incredibly active dogs that require intense training and regular exercise to keep them out of trouble physically and mentally. They are best for active families and experienced pet parents. Socialization and consistent training will be essential when a German Shepherd is a puppy. This will help them to grow out of unruly behaviors such as nipping and jumping. German Shepherds have a double coat that sheds a lot. They will also typically go through a molting, which is a period of excessive shedding, one to two times a year. German Shepherd Health Issues While German Shepherds have a long life expectancy for a large breed dog, they are prone to several health problems. A trustworthy breeder will screen both male and female dogs being bred for health conditions such as degenerative myelopathy and hip and elbow dysplasia. German Shepherds commonly also get gastric dilation and volvulus GDV , commonly known as bloat, as well as cancer, allergies, heart disease, and a few other conditions. Pet parents of German Shepherds should be highly educated on the symptoms to look for, as early detection is the key to a good prognosis for any serious condition. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a neurologic disorder that affects the spinal cord, slowly causing paralysis of the back legs. Early signs of degenerative myelopathy include weakness in the hind end and difficulty standing up. Watch your dog carefully for signs of pain and discomfort that come on gradually rather than suddenly. Check their claws at least once a month to watch for signs of uneven wear which would indicate a subtle lameness. There is no treatment for this condition, but physical therapy can help strengthen muscles and protect their ability to use their legs. While there is no cure, you can test for this condition using a DNA-based blood test submitted to the University of Florida or the University of Missouri. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia Elbow dysplasia is a degenerative joint disease that can cause lifelong pain in the front limbs. Hip dysplasia is another degenerative joint disease that affects the hind end. Clinical signs include limping, decreased range of motion, and other signs of pain—especially later in life, as arthritis sets in because of this disease process. The treatment for all degenerative joint diseases includes weight loss, reduced activity, joint protection supplements, anti-inflammatory and pain medications, or surgery. Cancer Cancer can develop in German Shepherds at any age, but usually occurs later in life. Common cancers include hemangiosarcoma and bone, lung, and intestinal cancers. Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant tumor that is most often detected in blood-rich organs such as the spleen and the heart. The signs of hemangiosarcoma are usually related to internal bleeding, with symptoms such as weakness, white or pale gums, trouble breathing, a distended abdomen, and collapse. Other signs are usually nonspecific and indicate overall malaise, including lethargy, panting, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss. Depending on the extent of the cancer, treatment plans can include chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Bloat Gastric Dilation and Volvulus Bloat, or gastric dilation and volvulus GDV is a sudden life-threatening condition when the stomach enlarges with gas bloat and then twists upon itself GDV. This happens commonly in deep-chested, large-breed dogs such as German Shepherds. To limit the risk of GDV, German Shepherds should wait at least 30 minutes to one hour after eating to resume exercising. Another way to help prevent your German Shepherd from developing a life-threatening GDV would be via gastropexy. A gastropexy permanently attaches the stomach to the inside body wall. This fixation of the stomach prevents the stomach from being able to twist upon itself. Allergies Allergies in German Shepherds can be first seen with symptoms such as itchy skin, skin infections , ear infections , or digestive upset such as vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss. A thorough medical history and physical examination, diagnostic testing of skin and ears, blood work, and fecal tests are warranted if you suspect that your dog has allergies. Allergies in dogs can be treated by avoiding the cause and the allergen and managing the symptoms that exist with diet therapy and medications. Heart Disease Heart disease, specifically DCM dilated cardiomyopathy , valvular disease, and heart murmurs, can be common in German Shepherds. A special diet should also be considered to restrict sodium intake and to increase the amount of certain amino acids to promote heart health. Dogs with significant heart disease should not be pushed to exercise beyond their limits. Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency EPI Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency EPI is a digestive health issue that occurs when the cells of the pancreas do not produce enzymes and hormones normally. The most common symptom is weight loss, despite your pet having a ravenous appetite. Other symptoms of EPI include soft stool or diarrhea; excessive gas; desire to eat feces and other unusual objects; flaky skin; or rough coat. Once the pancreas is damaged to the point that symptoms of EPI develop, you must give your dog pancreatic enzyme supplements and other treatments for the rest of their life. Nevertheless, with proper management, your dog can still live a happy life with this condition. Pannus Pannus, or superficial keratitis, is an immune-mediated painful eye condition that can cause blindness if not managed properly. It occurs more often in dogs that live at high altitudes, those with increased exposure to UV light, and in areas with severe air pollution. Keeping dogs indoors during the sunniest part of the day, providing a doghouse shelter, or trying a specialty pair of doggie sunglasses like Rex Specs may prove very helpful in preventing this issue. Most of these conditions have a genetic component and can be avoid by good breeding and preventive screening practices. They require a high-quality, age-appropriate diet to meet their nutritional needs. These diets are usually labeled puppy, adult, or senior. Offering table food and animal bones should be avoided, as they can cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia, and they also have a much higher fat content than dog food. High-fat foods can also cause pancreatitis. How Much to Feed a German Shepherd In general, puppies should be fed 3—4 times per day and adult dogs should be fed twice a day. How much you feed is determined by the specific food your German Shepherd eats. You can ask your veterinarian, follow the package instructions, or contact the dog food manufacturer, as AAFCO-approved diets have veterinary nutritionists who help determine these requirements. There are some theories that German Shepherds that are fed smaller, more frequent meals have a lower incidence of bloat and stomach problems. How to Feed a German Shepherd Although there is a genetic component, science shows that rapid long bone growth in puppies such as German Shepherds and other large- and giant-breed dogs contributes to development of joint and bone conditions. Rapid bone growth is suspected to be caused by overfeeding and calcium supplementation. German Shepherds that are fed free-choice or overfed are at higher risk of rapid bone growth. Maintaining lean body weight will also help to decrease the rate of bone growth. Calcium supplements and adult dog foods rich in calcium should never be given to German Shepherd puppies under 6 months of age, as they cannot absorb calcium appropriately when they are that young. Conditions caused by rapid long bone growth and excess calcium supplementation can include: Hip and elbow dysplasia Osteochondrosis dissecans of the shoulder, knee, wrists, and ankles. This is improper growth and blood supply in a joint, which requires surgery to prevent osteoarthritis from developing. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy HOD. This is inflammation of the bone under the growth plate; it can cause severe joint swelling, pain, fever, anorexia, lameness, and not wanting to move. This is an inflammation of the long bones and associated blood vessels. Joint swelling is uncommon, but the symptoms are similar to HOD. MSM has all-natural anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 fatty acids high-quality fish oil are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties as well when given at appropriate doses. Research shows that reducing inflammation helps to control pain associated with osteoarthritis , which is a common problem in dogs with joint issues. Probiotics Probiotics such as Purina Calming Care can be helpful not just for digestive issues, but with minor behavioral issues as well. Digestive enzymes come in powdered form to assist dogs who have pancreatic issues, such as German Shepherds with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Other vitamin and mineral supplements are generally not needed for healthy puppies and adults, as they get all they need from their AAFCO-approved diet daily. The breed is considered to be smart and easy to train. They are known to be gentle family dogs and loyal protectors of those they trust. This loyalty can make German Shepherds seem more standoffish around strangers. It does take them some time to gain the trust of other people and other pets. German Shepherds are a very active and athletic breed that require a ton of exercise for both their physical and mental health. Without exercise they will develop unfavorable behaviors, due to irritation and pent-up energy. Controlled leash walks and supervised free play in safe, fenced-in areas should be started when they are puppies. Keeping a German Shepherd on a leash at all times when in public places is a good rule of thumb, as even the most well-trained dog can be distracted and not follow regular commands, leading to a possible confrontation. These results should be provided to a pet parent by the breeder of the German Shepherd before the dog is purchased. Not all temperament and behavioral issues are evident in a growing puppy, and it is impossible to predict whether a dog will be free of these problems. Find a trustworthy breeder who is committed to breeding the healthiest animals possible. German Shepherd Behavior German Shepherds, like other herding dogs, tend to be on the nippy side. They have very powerful jaws, and unfortunately, they frequently bite. Most aggressive German Shepherds are aggressive because of their owners. The German Shepherd dog is a pack animal. They need you to be the leader of the pack, providing structure and guidance. The key to success is consistency and practice; you will get the behavior you reward. German Shepherds from working lines have an extremely strong drive to work and may be more dog than most people can or want to handle. German Shepherds are very smart companions and exceptional workers. This helps you build the right foundation for your puppy to evolve into a well-adapted and well-mannered adult dog. Conversely, when your dog barks at you to pet them, do not start petting them until they sit down and quietly wait for you to do so. Soon they will learn that they get what they desire without the excessive, unnecessary behavior. German Shepherds thrive on consistency, positive reinforcement, and a reward system, such as a treats or toys to help strengthen the human-animal bond. They become very bonded to all members of the family and will be willing to participate in many family activities. Fun Activities for German Shepherd Herding. References 1. Clinical and pathological effects Degenerative myelopathy is a fatal, chronic, progressive, degenerative disease of the spinal cord, affecting several breeds of dog including the GSD. In time, it leads to complete paralysis in all limbs tetraparesis. To understand the disease process some knowledge of the anatomy of the spinal cord and nervous system is needed. The nervous system is comprised of the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord — and the peripheral nerves, which connect to the spinal cord throughout its length. It receives messages from sensors throughout the body sensory functions , processes this information, decides what changes need to occur and then sends out messages to glands and muscles to make these changes motor functions. The spinal cord runs along the length of the spine, which protects it. The spine is divided into 5 different regions — cervical neck , thoracic chest , lumbar lower back , sacral pelvic and coccygeal tail. The spinal cord is similarly split into regions and correspondingly labelled. The spinal cord is comprised of two major types of tissue: white and grey matter. The white matter contains the axons — long wire-like fibres - of the sensory and motor neurons that carry nerve impulses either to or from the brain, the grey the cell bodies of the neurons. The axons of the motor neurons, that start in the brain, are often called the upper motor neurons UMNs , and their connections with the cell bodies of the nerves cells that go on to form the peripheral nerves the lower motor neurones LMNs. To increase the speed with which axons can transmit their impulse the electrical message that they carry , they are insulated much like electrical wires in our homes. The insulating layer is called the myelin sheath and it is because of its fat content, that the tissues of the spinal cord that it makes up appear white. In DM there is a slow, progressive degeneration of the white matter of the thoracic section of the spinal cord, with loss of both myelin and axons Shell .Abnormal structures called cytoplasmic inclusions are also observed within the diseased tissue when it is examined under the microscope this can only be done at post mortem Rusbridge no date. The degeneration of the spinal cord tissue appears to be caused by the action of excessive amounts of damaging reactive oxygen species molecules ROS : biochemicals that react with and damage the components of cells, causing oxidative or free radical injury. High numbers of ROS occur with this condition, due to a mutation in the gene which codes for the production of the superoxide dismutase-1 SOD1 enzyme, which is produced by cells to help break down ROS and limit any damage they might cause Awano et al .DM in dogs is comparable to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS a progressive, neurodegenerative disease of humans Awano et al .Prior to the discovery of the SOD1 gene mutation, possible causes of DM were suggested as genetic, nutritional Averill , Williams et al , or immunological Barclay and Haines , Waxman et al .The first signs are typically seen at around 8 to 9 years of age and involve hindlimb ataxia swaying when moving. This may be asymmetrical worse on either the right or left side. The dog may also have difficulty getting up and its hindlimb nails may become scuffed to the point of bleeding. DM has an insidious gradual onset and can easily be misdiagnosed as hip dysplasia or other orthopaedic problems, which are also common in GSDs. Unlike many other of these conditions, DM seems painless Cherubini et al .Owners may notice the hindlegs crossing over as the dog walks. In this stage of the disease, it is mainly the UMNs of the spinal cord that are affected, along with sensory nerves. Spinal reflexes, when tested, often seem to be intact but the dog seems to be unable to sense exactly where the hindlimbs are or place them accurately - hence the scuffing of the nails and ataxic gait. With progression of the disease, loss of motor functions and signs of LMN dysfunction manifest in the hindlimbs. These show as weakness leading to inability to stand and paralysis in the hindlimbs. In time, the muscles of the hindlegs waste away. Most owners elect for euthanasia once paraplegia has occurred; however, if allowed to progress, the disease will ascend up the spinal cord to affect the forelegs leading to tetraplegia loss of use of all four limbs Awano et al .The rate at which the disease progresses is often not uniform rather it is characterised by periods of slow progression followed by rapid changes Cherubini et al .Urinary and faecal incontinence may occur Shell and trauma to nails and the hindlimbs or pressure sores may occur secondary to the paresis loss or impaired movement , paralysis and incontinence. There is currently no effective treatment Cherubini et al , Rusbridge no date although physiotherapy has been shown to prolong the time some dogs can remain mobile Kathmann et al .Return to top 2. Intensity of welfare impact DM is itself not a painful disease Cherubini et al , Shell ; however, affected dogs may be caused distress by being unable to function or behave as normal. Trauma may also occur to nails and the skin of the hind limbs as sensation and loss of function progresses. Once paralysed, these dogs have long-term care needs which many owners find difficult and some dogs will be euthanased because of this. Ultimately, when earlier euthanasia is declined, DM leads to an inability to carry on any kind of normal life and finally to death. Return to top 3. Duration of welfare impact Degenerative myelopathy usually appears in dogs from 8 or 9 years of age Cherubini et al , Rusbridge no date , however, animals as young as 6 months can be affected Cherubini et al .The condition is progressive from the start although the rate of progression of the disease may not be uniform. Most owners of affected dogs elect to have them euthanased within 12 months of the onset of signs, often when they become paraplegic. Deterioration to death can take over 3 years Awano et al .Return to top 4. Number of animals affected Degenerative myelopathy was first identified in GSDs. The commonest cause of progressive hindlimb dysfunction in older, large-breed dogs Wheeler , it was originally thought to only affect GSDs, this is now known not to be the case. Wahl et al consider it a major genetic disease afflicting GSDs. The exact percentage of GSDs to be affected is currently unknown although researchers at Missouri University suggest that a relatively high proportion of individuals from the following breeds: GSD, Boxer, Pembroke corgi, Chesapeake Bay retriever and Rhodesian ridgeback have the predisposing mutated gene and that many of these genetically-affected individuals will go on to manifest the disease. From data on estimates of total dog population in the UK and on the percentage of all micro-chip registered dogs that are German Shepherd Dogs Alsatians Lucy Asher, , personal communication , we estimate that the UK population size of this breed may be around , Return to top 5. Diagnosis A definitive diagnosis of DM can only be made after death by microscopic examination of the spinal cord Cherubini et al .A tentative diagnosis of DM, whilst the dog is alive, can be made by a veterinary surgeon through elimination of all other possible causes of the signs. This will include the need for a full physical and neurological examination examination of the nervous system by means of tests to check out the health of various nerve pathways. It may also include blood tests, spinal x-rays including myelography x-rays after injection of a dye into the spinal canal , analysis of cerebrospinal fluid the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord , CT computed tomography scans and MRI magnetic resonance imaging scans, the most useful diagnostic test for imaging the brain and spinal cord. The tentative diagnosis is made if the results of all tests including the MRI scans are normal, though the CSF analysis may reveal a high level of protein Cherubini et al .As DM is most often seen in older dogs it is not uncommon for them to have concurrent disease which often will cause abnormalities on these tests and may complicate the diagnostic process. It is also possible for osteoarthritis of the hips or spine to develop secondary to DM due to uneven weight bearing in the hindlimbs as the disease progresses Cherubini et al .Return to top 6. Genetics Recently a gene connected to the development of DM has been identified. Dogs which are homozygous for the mutated gene SOD1, i. Currently, not all the animals identified with a pair of the abnormal genes have developed the disease. It is not known if they will go on to develop the disease later or if other unknown risk factors are necessary for disease development in these individuals College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, no date. Animals with one abnormal gene appear to be healthy carriers i. The problem has therefore been categorised as an autosomal recessive disorder with incomplete penetrance i. Return to top 7. How do you know if an animal is a carrier or likely to become affected? DNA testing can now be performed to identify animals at risk of developing the disease and carrier animals. All animals should be tested prior to purchase and breeding. Return to top 8. The researchers who developed this test believe that careful use of it could help decrease the incidence of DM in affected breeds although they feel this occurs slowly, over many generations College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, no date. Elimination of a recessive gene with incomplete penetrance from a breed is not straightforward if its prevalence is high because removing all carrier animals, that possess a copy of the gene, may significantly affect the number of animals suitable to breed from, and hence the size of the gene pool. Careful breeding of carrier animals to known healthy non-carrier individuals is recommended Bell , with slow replacement of carrier breeding animals with non-carriers over time. If, as suspected, the mutated gene is common in GSDs, halting breeding from all carrier animals may significantly affect the number of animals suitable to breed from, and hence the size of the gene pool. This could lead to excessive inbreeding and the appearance of other unwanted genetic diseases of which there are many. To avoid such a problem, the careful breeding of carrier animals with non-carriers, either from within the breed or from outside the breed, seems necessary. To enable the elimination of the gene whilst minimising the risks of other genetic problems emerging due to greater levels of inbreeding, Bell recommends that, over time, breeders slowly replace carrier breeding animals with non-carriers. Return to top 9. Jul 22, Share We view German Shepherds as intelligent, loyal, and brave dogs who can take on even the toughest of tasks. But like all other dogs, German Shepherds have their fair share of health issues that slowly arise as they start to age. The genes get passed on from litter to litter and is rather painful since it is a malformation in the hip joint. Image Credit: makeitclear, Pixabay 2. Elbow Dysplasia Like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia affects many larger dog breeds from a line of poorly bred ancestors. Instead of the issue with the hip, the same problem occurs in the elbows, and it can vary from mild to severe symptoms. It usually makes it uncomfortable to walk and, unfortunately, not much can be done once a dog is diagnosed. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus GDV Also called bloat , GDV is a serious issue that occurs when dogs eat food too quickly and then participate in too much physical activity. The gas builds up in the stomach and the pressure from the bloating makes it difficult for dogs to breathe. Some dogs go into shock or eat grass to try to vomit. This is a life-threatening condition, and your dogs should be taken to the vet immediately if you think they might have it. Try to feed your German Shepherds three small meals a day to prevent the problem. The signs for diabetes include dry mouth, fatigue, excessive eating and urinating, and swollen feet. Image Credit: Flashieeh, Shutterstock 5. Epilepsy German Shepherds are known for having seizure disorders. Even though epilepsy is incurable, there are many ways to help prevent the symptoms. Hemophilia Hemophilia has occurred in German Shepherds due to a long line of inbreeding. Even the smallest of cuts can be serious for a dog. This disease is more common in German Shepherds than many other dog breeds, so be careful when out exercising with them. Cataracts Another health issue that your German Shepherd might get as they age is cataracts. This issue is usually easy to tell when it is happening because you start to see that their eyes look a little more cloudy or they start running into things more often. If they progress, it becomes challenging for dogs to see anything at all. Image Credit: Pauline Loroy, Unsplash 8. Degenerative Disc Disease is common in large animals, but it can even start to manifest when the dogs are still young. A lot of breeders try to avoid this issue. Get your German Shepherd checked for spinal abnormalities from when they are puppies to keep this in check. Panosteitis German Shepherds grow very quickly and sometimes limp a lot as they mature from 5 to 14 months old. It is more common in German Shepherds because they have many stomach issues like Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Of course, some breeds have fewer than others, but a lot of them can be prevented with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Over time, visits to the vet can really add up. If you're looking for a good pet insurance plan that won't break the bank, you may want to look at Lemonade. This company offers adjustable plans customized to your pet's needs. However, this breed does have several common health issues that owners should be aware of. The more extreme conditions are a result of inbreeding, so responsible breeders take special care to trace the genealogy before breeding. The average lifespan of a German Shepherd is 10 to 12 years old, but certain conditions might shorten that. Here is a look at some of the most common types of health problems that German Shepherds have and how to recognize them. Diabetes Diabetes is not something that we think of when we think of canine ailments. However, it is not unheard of for German Shepherds to be diagnosed with this health problem. If your dog has one or more of these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean that they have diabetes. However, they should be checked out to ensure that they do not have diabetes or another serious illness. However, it is much more serious than the average bloat that humans experience after eating too much. This is an extremely painful experience for your dog and also very dangerous. The condition can sometimes come on very quickly. Some of the symptoms that your dog may experience with GDV include: Gums are pale or almost white in color Excessive drooling Gagging and retching. If this happens on a weekend or some other time when your regular vet is closed, look to see if there is an emergency animal hospital nearby. With these conditions, dogs will start to go downhill very quickly. In order to give them the best chance at survival, treatment must begin quickly. Perform an X-Ray to get a better look and see if the stomach is twisted. Perform surgery. The only way to fix a twisted stomach is to perform a surgery. Depending on what goes on during the surgery, your dog will need a lot of time to recover from such an invasive operation. While your dog is recovering, it is imperative that he or she gets a lot of rest and refrain from physical activity. Your dog should be monitored closely for the first few days. If they start to vomit or show any signs that their health is deteriorating, you should call the vet immediately. Hip Dysplasia This is a common problem for German Shepherds and other large dog breeds. This is a genetic disorder that usually happens while the German Shepherd puppy is still in the growth stage. The hip socket is more shallow than usual and it causes the hip joint to become loose, which can cause a lot of pain for the dog. Sometimes, hip dysplasia can go unnoticed, but over time, it can cause a dog to develop other problems, such as arthritis and muscular issues. Some of the most common signs that a dog is experiencing hip dysplasia include: Limping for seemingly no reason Hopping when running Popping sounds coming from the joint Slow to stand up Slow to lay down Difficulty getting on and off beds, couches, and other furniture If you notice any of these signs and symptoms, it is a good idea to schedule a vet visit for your dog. There are a few different treatment options available for dogs with hip dysplasia, including surgery. Your vet will examine your dog and determine the best course of treatment. Elbow Dysplasia Elbow Dysplasia is just like hip dysplasia, except for the fact that it affects the elbows and not the hips. The symptoms are also going to be similar. You may notice your dog limping or not wanting to run. Just like with hip dysplasia, surgery is also a treatment option. But sometimes, a vet will try to just manage the pain if the dysplasia is not severe. Cataracts Sometimes it seems like these dogs grow up so fast. In truth, when German Shepherds stop growing is at 18 months. As German Shepherds age, some have been known to develop cataracts. This is the same eye disorder that humans can get as well. It is pretty easy to tell if your older dog has cataracts as you will be able to see a noticeable white film develop on the lens of their eyeball. If left untreated, cataracts can cause your older dog to go completely blind in that eye. Another thing to note is that German Shepherd skin issues are fairly common. This breed is prone to yeast dermatitis, moist dermatitis, and allergy dermatitis. Make sure to have these conditions treated by a vet as soon as you spot on your pup. Having a German Shepherd can be a rewarding experience. They are a playful, protective, and loyal dog breed. As long as you stay vigilant and monitor any unusual symptoms, you should be able to have your playful pooch around for years to come. Check out Vetericyn if there are products that can alleviate the symptoms of any of these conditions. Questions to ask about the breeder themselves Why did you choose to breed golden retrievers? You want a breeder that truly has a passion for the golden retriever breed. How long have you been breeding golden retrievers? At what age do you start to breed your dogs? Most good breeders are involved in something other than just breeding. Their dogs participate in sports, shows, or are even therapy dogs. Is there a contract when I buy the puppy? There should be a contract that covers costs, refunds, responsibilities, etc. If they do require the pups to be spayed or neutered , this will be in the contract. Good breeders will have previous happy customers. Are you a member of the Golden Retriever Club of America or any local golden retriever clubs? Most breeders have a specific reason they were excited to breed two dogs together. How many litters has this mom had? And how old is she? Can you provide proof of the health clearances for these two dogs? Do these dogs have any titles? Can I meet the parents? The parents should be friendly and outgoing to you and any other dogs around. Questions to ask about the puppies How do you socialize the puppies? A good breeder will be able to talk to you about this. Where are the puppies born and raised? Are they raised in the home, or out back in the shed? Will they be examined by a vet before they go home? The answer should be yes. What are the puppies bred for? This may include being bred for companions pets , or show, sport, or hunting. They may ask you: Have you owned a dog before? Do you currently have a dog? What type of lifestyle are you expecting with your new golden? Why do you want a golden retriever? Do you have children? What kind of home do you live in? How much time will you be able to spend with the puppy? Is it because the breeder is inexperienced and just trying to get started? Is it because they come from champion bloodlines? Is the breeder is experienced and takes their time to properly care for the mother, socialize and stimulate the puppies, feed them the best food, and take them to the best veterinarian? Or is it because the breeder is a good salesman and can charge a premium for their puppies? Check out this article to learn more about how much golden retrievers cost. Since breeders are there from the day the puppies and their parents! And picking the right pet for your family starts with finding a breeder you can trust. No matter how nice they seem or how attractive their website looks, you should always do a little bit of research before choosing a Golden Retriever breeder. Here are important points that all breeders should address: Image Source Does the breeder give back to the breed? Breed preservation should be the primary goal of Golden Retriever breeders. They should participate in keeping the species alive through membership at a Golden Retriever breed dog club, a performance club, or an obedience club. What type of experience does the breeder have? Do they stay true to the pure genetic traits of the breed? Do they provide health screenings and health guarantees? Can you meet the puppies and parents in person? How many litters do the females have each year? Female Golden Retrievers can have up to two litters per year. However, breeders who follow ethical practices will only allow the females to have four to six litters in their lifetime. A female can breed between the ages of two and eight. Once you choose a breeder that seems like a good fit for you and your family, you should write up some questions to ask them. And in return, expect some questions about you, your lifestyle, and your home! One of the first things any breeder you inquire about should provide is a list of former buyers. Reviews posted online are one thing, but being able to talk with customers directly speaks volumes about the legitimacy of the breeder. When you speak with their former customers, ask questions about their buying experience and how their dog is doing years after purchase. Puppies should receive some level of preventative care that is appropriate for their age. Newborn puppies up to eight weeks old should stay with their mothers, but they will also receive their first round of core vaccines during these few weeks. They should have a yearly examination by a licensed veterinarian that will perform vaccines, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, as well as general health checkups. A reputable, passionate breeder will be more than happy to receive updates and questions about their puppies well into adulthood. With that being said, the breeder should also provide a health guarantee. A health guarantee states that you are not financially liable for any genetic issues in the puppy, as long as the health condition is verified by a certified veterinarian. This is an essential point that you might not think twice about. A good Golden Retriever breeder will ask questions to determine if your household is a good fit for their puppy. Image Source 1 Why do you want a dog? This is a simple yet important question that you should have an answer to. Golden Retriever breeders that dedicate their livelihood to continuing the pure genetic bloodline will want to know what appeals to you about these energetic companions. Additionally, the breeder might ask who will be walking, feeding, and playing with the dog. Golden Retriever puppies require tons of attention, especially during the first two years of their lives. If the breeder asks this, they want to know how your children will be participating in the handling of the puppy. They also want to understand how you plan to introduce the puppy to other pets so they can coexist safely within the same home. No matter how nice a breeder may seem, you want to avoid accidentally contributing to backyard breeders or a puppy mill disguised as a reputable breeder. Doing so can cost you thousands of dollars in medical bills and years of potential heartbreak. Here are some of the most critical and obvious warning signs of an untrustworthy breeder. Less experienced breeders will charge on the lower end, and more experienced breeders usually with generations of pure genetic proof! Additionally, some of the best breeders will only sell trained puppies to ensure their pooches are family- and forever-home ready. Therefore, you should receive standard documentation upon adopting your new Golden Retriever puppies, such as care instructions, registration papers, vaccination records, and necessary contracts. The contract may also state that you agree to surrender the puppy instead of adopting him out to a shelter or the pound. Some warranties will say that the breeder should have the right to reclaim the puppy in an unexpected situation like this. If you do ask for references, and they give you a list of written reviews instead of contact information for former clients, this is a red flag. A refusal for a tour means that the breeder knows potential clients may be turned away by the environment. If you are invited to tour a facility, learn about what a professional kennel should look and smell like first. The bottom line is, you need to do plenty of research. Buying A Golden Retriever From A Respectable, Professional Breeder Purchasing a Golden retriever Puppy from a respected, responsible professional breeder is by far the best option when it comes to getting yourself a good quality, healthy puppy given the best start in life. A responsible professional breeder: Cares greatly about the overall quality and welfare of the breed and selectively breeds for the betterment of the Golden Retriever population as a whole. Screen sire and dam for health issues in trying to breed puppies with the lowest possible chance of inherited disease. Will help you to select the right puppy for you from the many different personalities in their litter. Not all dogs are created equal! Some are more energetic, more headstrong, more confident, others less so. They will match you to the perfect puppy for your hopes and lifestyle. They handle, care for, and socialize puppies in such an expert way that the puppies have had the best possible start in life and the greatest chance of growing up a confident, happy dog of good temperament. They provide some of the best advice and support that can be given about how you should care for your new family member, from the moment you make the decision right through your Goldens entire life. So as you can see, there are many benefits to buying from a professional breeder. But surely there must be some cons you may be thinking? Well it depends how you look at it, but: A professional breeder will ask you many questions to be sure you are a good fit and have the right lifestyle that fits in with owning a Golden Retriever. You could have a long wait. Good breeders are popular and do not breed excessively, so you may have to wait a year or more before a puppy becomes available. But a benefit to this is that it weeds out the impulse buyers which cuts down on puppies that are given up after rushed decisions. Compared to some other options, you will pay quite a high price. I say a high price but what I mean is a fair price really. A fair price for a good quality, healthy puppy. But mostly backyard breeders are the unscrupulous types. You usually will not be able to see the premises on which the puppies are bred, they will not ask any questions of prospective owners and there will be no commitment or offer of help and advice for the future of the puppies they breed. This results in a poorer quality of life for the animals, and expensive vet bills for the owners. One positive of backyard breeders though is the price. Yes, they are considerably cheaper than professional breeders. And the savings you make up front are more than lost for extra vet bills down the road. So the risk is your puppy has a higher chance of inherited disease and behavior problems than the general population. There will be no true guarantee of pedigree. But if your friend has taken steps to get veterinary advice and care for the puppies, has looked after and socialized them well, maybe even knows the father of the puppies and can prove he is of good health and pedigree then this option may not be so bad. However they got into the situation, there are way too many homeless dogs in the world. Lack of space and insufficient funding inevitably means that many dogs each year are euthanized. Maybe you could give a second chance at life to such a dog? But you should also be aware that some rescued dogs will have behavioral issues, though the center staff will inform you of this. They may also have suffered some level of abuse and have psychological issues, phobias or anxieties that may not be evident until a certain situation arises. So there is some due diligence and this greatly increases the success rate of finding happy homes for dogs that suit their new human family. This is obviously a good thing for both the dogs and hopeful owners too! Buying From A Pet Store Or A Puppy Mill A large number of dogs bought from pet stores originate from puppy farms, also known as puppy mills, which are profit driven businesses that mass-produce dogs and sell through pet stores and classifieds. In puppy mills, dogs are bred in appalling conditions, kept in overcrowded small wire cages, given little exercise or socialization, enjoy no human contact and receive nothing in the way of veterinary care. The puppies are usually taken away from their mothers and litter-mates at such a young age that behavioral issues in the adult dog are extremely common. The dogs in puppy mills are no more than a commodity, a cash crop to be produced and harvested while spending as little as possible to maximize profits as far as possible. Yes, many people have been lucky enough to have purchased the most glorious of family pets from a pet store, but for each one a lot of suffering has occurred for countless more. I strongly advise that you do not support the puppy mill industry and never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store. The risks of not getting a quality, healthy dog are too high, and the ethics of the industry are shocking with many dogs suffering at their hands. Everybody should work to eradicate the entire industry and the first step is by not supporting them financially. There are many places and options available to get a Golden Retriever puppy, some good, some bad, and puppy mills and pet stores just an appalling option to be avoided. In my opinion your 2 best options are to source a puppy from a professional breeder or to adopt from a rescue center. But there are other options available and I hope this article has given you some information to help you in your decision. Please let us know about your experiences of getting a GR from any of the sources above, or even one I may have forgotten. Thank you.

Wolf vs. While these are generic numbers, they can still give you a better understanding of the ideal size to expect. Of course, note that your German Shepherd has to be a purebred, and the mating needs professional intervention. Below is a photo of a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog , which was initially bred from working line German Shepherds and Carpathian grey wolves in .This hybrid has a special diet requirement. Look for high-quality dog food that contains real meat as the first ingredient, and avoid fillers like corn, wheat, and soy. Some options include: Dry kibble: This is the most common type of dog food and is convenient and easy to store. Look for brands that offer high-quality protein sources like chicken, beef, or fish. Wet food: This type of dog food is more palatable than dry kibble and can be a good option for picky eaters. Look for brands that use real meat and avoid fillers. Raw food: Some dog owners prefer to feed their GSD-Wolf Mix a raw food diet, which consists of uncooked meat, bones, and organs. But why do I stress it under the diet section? Hip dysplasia: This is a genetic condition that affects the hip joint and can cause pain and mobility issues. To help prevent hip dysplasia, make sure your dog maintains a healthy weight and gets regular exercise. To help prevent these issues, feed your dog a high-quality diet and avoid table scraps and other human foods. Joint problems: Because of their size and activity level, GSD-Wolf Mixes are also prone to joint problems like arthritis. Multivitamins: A multivitamin supplement can help ensure that your dog is getting all the essential vitamins and minerals they need to stay healthy. Here are some tips to help you keep your GSD-Wolf hybrid healthy and happy. Grooming Your German Shepherd-Wolf Mix has a thick, dense coat that requires regular grooming to keep it healthy and shiny. Here are some grooming tips to keep in mind: Brush their coat at least once a week to remove loose fur and prevent matting. Bathe them as needed, but not too often, as it can strip their coat of its natural oils. Trim their nails regularly to prevent them from getting too long and causing discomfort. Clean their ears regularly to prevent infections. These are only a few tips. Ideally, once you get a German Shepherd Wolf Mix, you may encounter new requirements based on their health conditions as well. Nevertheless, regular grooming is mandatory! Combining the power and strength of a German Shepherd and a wolf, this mix is inherently stronger. Here are some exercise tips to keep in mind: Aim for at least 2 hours of exercise per day, including walks, runs, and playtime. Provide plenty of mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys and training sessions. Consider enrolling your dog in agility classes or other activities to keep them engaged. Training Your GSD-Wolf Mix is a smart and independent breed that needs consistent training and socialization to thrive. In fact, they can understand and grasp commands faster than usual because of their mix. Here are some training tips to keep in mind: Start training and socialization early to prevent behavior issues. Use positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, to encourage good behavior. Be patient and consistent in your training approach. Consider working with a professional trainer if you need help. Maintaining a German Shepherd Wolf Mix requires a bit more effort than other breeds, but with the right approach, you can keep your dog healthy and happy for years to come. By providing them with plenty of exercise, training, and health care, you can enjoy a strong and rewarding bond with your unique and beautiful German Shepherd Wolf Mix. They have a natural instinct to protect their loved ones and can be fiercely loyal to those they trust. Your German Shepherd Wolf Mix is a smart and inquisitive breed that thrives on mental stimulation. They are quick learners and respond well to positive reinforcement training techniques. Similar to their parents, your GSD-Wolf hybrid is an independent breed that can be stubborn at times. They may not always follow commands or listen to their owners and may prefer to do things their own way. However, this hybrid needs early and consistent socialization to prevent behavior issues. They may be wary of strangers and other animals if they are not properly socialized from a young age. Your GSD-Wolf Mix has a strong prey drive and may be prone to chasing small animals like squirrels and rabbits. A German Shepherd Wolf Mix is safe for people professionally trained to handle wolf dogs but is not safe for ordinary pet owners, first-time dog owners, and families with children. Three primary reasons move people to interbreed wolves and German Shepherds, or any other dog breed: The desire to create the attractive wolf look in a wolfdog. The expectation is that breeding a German Shepherd and a wolf will produce an exceptionally hybrid pup with a balanced blend of the domestic and the wild traits in the two canines. The attempt to tame the wild in the wolf and create a fiercer guard dog than the purebred German Shepherd. Unfortunately, these expectations rarely materialize. Instead, German Shepherd Wolf hybrids can manifest extreme aggression and stubbornness for several reasons. Dogs sexually mature by 6 to 8 months, but they also have less aggressive hormonal changes and a more stable behavioral pattern in the years of sexual maturity. In contrast, wolves only mature sexually at around 1 to 4 years. The species-specific roles that come with sexual maturity, such as fighting their place in pack roles, can generate aggression and stubbornness and make their behavior patterns extremely unpredictable. Inheriting the unpredictable behavior of a wolf can make German Shepherd Wolf Mixes challenging to manage. And pruning out the wolf traits in the Wolf Shepherd can be tricky, even with training. That means having to deal with a difficult-to-manage pet. A Wild Prey Drive Prey drive is the instinctive tendency of carnivores to pursue and capture prey, also known as predatory behavior. Both the wolf and the German Shepherd have a strong prey drive , the first more than the second. This behavior can make your wolfdog threaten the safety of livestock and other animals when you walk with them or even try to escape to meet this instinctual hunting drive. Territoriality Wolves are a territorial species, a trait that German Shepherd Wolf Mixes can inherit. Wolfdogs often show territoriality through urine marking. But being territorial especially means that the wolfdog will be possessive of things and spaces in the home. As a result, the Wolf Shepherd will tend to be aggressive and defensive when other animals and people approach areas and things they consider to belong to them. Winter Wolf Syndrome Winter wolf syndrome, or seasonal aggression, is the aggression that characterizes wolves and wolfdogs around the mating season. The manifestation of the winter wolf syndrome can vary from wolf to wolf or wolfdog to wolfdog. Some wolves and wolf dogs may just show a bit of grumpiness, while others can show outright aggressiveness and extreme possessiveness. In German Shepherd Wolf hybrids and other wolfdogs, the extent of the winter wolf syndrome behaviors may vary with: Wolf content: The amount of wolf in a German Shepherd Dog. Sex: Males show protective behavior towards females, and females may show aggression towards their fellow females. In both cases, the wolfdogs can direct this aggression toward the owner or other persons. According to the Colorado Wolf Sanctuary , because of the natural element in the winter wolf syndrome, wolves and wolfdog owners should be aware that it is unsafe to interact directly with their pets in the five months or more around the mating season. The resulting question from the discovery that wolfdogs can be unsafe is whether governments allow people to own wolfdogs, even though they can turn violent. In some states, owning a wolfdog is illegal. Others regulate the ownership of wolfdogs with the same laws set for the ownership of wild animals, while others regulate wolfdogs in the same way as dogs. When owning a wolfdog is permitted by law, some states and local laws may specify the permissible wolf content in the wolfdog or require owners to get additional permits. A good number of states, including California, Montana, Idaho, and Florida, have both local and state restrictions on wolfdog ownership. Fewer states like Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, and Illinois completely outlaw wolfdogs. No state in the US is without restrictions on wolfdog ownership. As laws are constantly changing, please contact your city, county, and state governments before purchasing a wolf dog. In other countries like the UK, you require a license to own first-generation F1 wolf dogs, which are regulated by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act .However, it is legal to own a wolfdog as long as it is 3 generations F3 from the parent wolf. In other words, you can own a German Shepherd wolfdog if it is born of second-generation wolfdogs or a second-generation wolfdog and a German Shepherd. Going forward, you should check the safety and legality associated with the mix before you decide to get one. Even if you possess adequate knowledge in raising one, this hybrid is pretty challenging and can pose complexities on the go. Related Posts You May Like:. This is uncomfortable for the dog, and it creates quite the mess. The main ingredient in most dog foods is corn, or some other form of grain. Although with their disposition, they are much more suited as a dog that spends most of its time outside. If you are concerned about how much you would have to groom them. They Conclusion Normally when I type up one of these pages, my goal is to provide you with information that will help you decide what kind of dog is best for you and your family. Is that a chance that you are willing to take? He is a hybrid wolfdog. Or maybe some coyote, no one knows. He is drop-dead gorgeous and is flat out terrified of strangers. He has been living with Jayne and Mike Belskey at the Grey Wolf Central Wisconsin Rescue for two years now, having been rescued by them as a panicked, huddled, terrified mess from a shelter. It made me happier than I can say that after two hours after I arrived in the house he relaxed enough to lie down only a few feet away from me, albeit with a table between us. Maybe it was because I did lots of look aways, yawned a lot, avoided eye contact and kept my voice down. Maybe not, but I hereby admit to being thrilled to be in the same room with him, and was absolutely overwhelmed by his beauty. I got to meet Bits only because it was the day of the annual veterinary visit at Grey Wolf Rescue. Bits is on a leash only because he is about to be vaccinated and have blood drawn to check for tick-borne diseases, and for one brief moment he looked directly at me and I snapped the picture. While we talked, she climbed on the table, then the top of the couch, chewed on my hair, began eating my notebook, then played with the coffee cups, then squatted to pee, then lept at the blinds and pulled them down. Rinse and repeat. Of course we intervened whenever possible, but it was like trying to stop water coursing over a water fall. It did not end well. The couple eventually realized that there was no way they could manage a wolfdog and tried to find her a place to go. I will refrain from expressing my reaction to that here. He was also young, perhaps six-months old, but with a massive head and huge paws and his owner thought it a tad amusing that the animal was biting his wife and downright hysterical that he bit me after I traded the toy he had for a piece of chicken. The wolfdog ate the chicken while I picked up the toy, and then I offered the toy back to him. If you let me take your toy, then you get something better and you get the toy back too! The next week I heard that the wolfdog badly bit his male owner and was euthanized. For years I struggled with what to call wolfdog hybrids. Should I call them wolves? And yet, it is thus the perfect name, because they are not wolves, they are not dogs, and they are trapped in the awkardness of being neither. Yes, I know that some wolfdogs do well with their human family, and even get along with other dogs. Yes, I know that. I will no doubt get comments from wolfdog supporters and breeders who defend the practice of breeding wolves to dogs. When I testified as an expert witness in support of a woman who went to court to force her ex-husband to keep her young children away from the wolfdogs that her husband had purchased, I was put on the official Wolfdog Blacklist, and heard about it for years afterward. Wolves simply are not designed to live in houses with people. They need to trot miles and miles every day. They do not, and will never, look to their human for guidance, or boundaries, or anything but to live together as equals. You do not, ever, tell a wolf what to do. If you need more evidence, read the beautifully written and heartbreaking book, Part Wild , by Ceiridwen Terrill. I reviewed it in a previous blog. It was never my intent to have a Wolfdog in my life, let alone open a sanctuary and rescue. But everyone involved in rescue can understand about those life changing moments when a certain animal points the way to a new life path. For me it started with one abandoned Wolfdog pup that had 2 choices, either come home with me or be euthanized and so the journey began. I will be the first to say that after sharing the last 14 years of my life with them, I fully understand the draw these magnificent animals can have on the human heart. I have loved each and every rescued animal unconditionally. I have met some very loving and committed owners who do a wonderful job accepting life with these animals and giving them the best life possible, I work with a national network of rescues and sanctuaries around the country that do a fantastic job and I have met some very happy and well-adjusted animals. But for some many there is such a bone crushing sadness. When an owner realizes they are in over their head, there are few options for a happy ending. If I could build 20 new enclosures today, I could fill them all tomorrow with wolfdogs needing rescue. The ethics of captive wildlife is a struggle for me. Our wolves belong in the wild, not chained out in your back yard. Grey Wolf Central Wisconsin Rescue is a testament to the power of commitment. Containing wolfdogs is no easy feat, and the work the two of them has done is no less than amazing. Every individual animal they have has a horrendous, heartbreaking story behind it, and every individual receives attention and care from them both every day, every hour. They do not travel. It was an honor to be able to visit and spend time with them and the wolfdogs. Most of the time I merely observed while Jayne gently captured each wolfdog, muzzled it for safety sakes, and then DVM Pam Prochaska of Tomah WI gave it a once over, what vaccinations were needed and took blood to test for diseases. If you are so inclined, it would be a wonderful thing if you would too. They deserve all the help they can get. I have heard that there are a lot out west in the states, but a surprising number in the midwest too. What about other countries? Is this an issue where you live? On a related note: Anyone who wants to help the effort to disallow the use of free running packs of dogs in the wolf hunt in Wisconsin can check out the Ride for Wolves sponsored by the Dane County Humane Society in Madison, WI. After 3. A dark day for me. Lovely, yes? We are doing major work in the backyard to better manage water flow the house is at the bottom of a long, steep hill and are having retaining wall built. You know how it goes. Patience is not my virtue however.

how to care for french bulldog puppy - If you can dedicate the time to walk, exercise, and train a Standard Poodle on a daily basis they can be the perfect companion, so take some time to choose the perfect collar to compliment your standard, miniature, or toy poodle. Since leather is a natural product, it will not irritate their sensitive skin and the rounded edges of the leather will help prevent matting around the neck. Measure your Poodle's neck to determine the right size to purchase. A properly fitting collar should allow one to two fingers between the collar and the fur. Our leather collars are smooth on the inside, which means they will not break or pull the hairs around the neck. Interwoven in their ancestry are also several rough-coated water dogs such as the Barbet, which is perhaps the earliest incarnation of the Poodle being a curly-coated dog distributed in France, Russia, and Hungary. However, it is the German version that exerted most influence on the modern Poodle. If your poodle loves the water, our classic leather dog collars are completely waterproof for up to 1 hour completely submerged in water. Originally a large gun-dog, these dogs were used to pull milk carts, which explains their strong and large appearance. From both their herding and water roots, the Poodle became a talented water-hunting companion. He was also drawn into service as a military dog, guide dog, guard dog, wagon puller and as circus performers. Poodle's Physical Description The Standard Poodle who is a square-proportioned, well balanced and elegant looking breed, stands at a minimum 15 inches tall and can weigh between 45 to 75 pounds. His single profuse and curly coat which does not moult or shed comes in colours such as white, cream, apricot, brown, black, blue and silver, which if left untouched will grow to extraordinary lengths. His body moves with a light, springy, effortless stride, and he has a well-proportioned and dignified face and skull, and a tail that is often docked to half its normal length. He can be taught all manner of skills, from water-retrieving to circus tricks. He is responsive, easy to train, and a reliable companion, guard and retriever. He gets along with everyone, even children, but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. How to Upkeep your Poodle Because the poodle can be reserved with strangers, they need constant interaction with people. To maintain their amazing skills in water-retrieving or any challenging obedience session, mental and physical exercise should be part of their daily routine. Since his fur does not shed, he is the ideal dog for people who have allergies. Because of their low tolerance for the cold, no Poodle should live outdoors. Common Poodle Health Issues Like all pure breed dogs, the Standard Poodle is also susceptible to certain genetic issues including: Sebaceous Adenitis: This is an inflammation of the sebaceous glands, which causes scaly debris, hair loss, and infection on the skin. Gastric Torsion: Since the Poodle is a deep chested large dog, he is susceptible to bloat, which is basically the twisting of the stomach that traps the stomach contents and gases; it can lead to death if left untreated. Some dog owners underestimate just how useful they can be and how getting the wrong collar can actually completely disrupt training. Everything you need to know about this point is outlined below for you so just read on to find out more. Those you can purchase from pet stores in person and online are perfect for Poodle training. They come in all different shapes and sizes. For example, you can get the delicate and decorative ones that are designed for use around the house and not with a lead. You can get the training choker collars or Poodle collars that give you a greater degree of control with a harness. You could also choose to use perfectly fitted regular collars. The range is huge and the choice is yours but you might want to read the next section before you choose Poodle collars because it will make a difference as to how Poodle training goes. As such, they should fit snugly without being too tight but should not allow your Poodle room to escape. When you have made sure that your Poodle collars are the right fit, you should try it with a lead. Fit the lead or harness comfortably on your Poodle and tug it gently to make sure that you have control. This should be done in the house before you take your Poodle for a walk. After checking the fit of Poodle collars, use it as a guide to know when your Poodle is pulling too much during training. As soon as your Poodle begins to pull, you should use the lead to tug the collar slightly to bring your dog back into line. It will not take long to correct this bad behaviour on the lead because the collar will do its job. If you find that a normal collar does not work then try a choker collar for a while. For example, you will not want to use a choker collar during Toy Poodle training because of how small and delicate they are. Similarly, a small and thin collar would not be any good during Standard Poodle training because it is likely to snap and leave your Poodle running wherever he or she wants to go. Make sure that you exercise a little common sense and you will find that Poodle training on the lead works far better because you will be in full control. I bet you did not know that Poodle collars were so important for training purposes, did you? Many people just think they are for decorative purposes but they are so much more than they and worth their weight in gold when it comes to keeping your Poodle under control. Just take a look next time you try training and you will soon see just how important they are. That is all for today but I really hope that you have found this information useful. The quality of this collar does not make sacrifices in comfort. OneTigris is available in a variety of sizes and colors to fit any poodle. With five adjustable points, you can totally tailor the color to your poodle. The thick nylon strap has a thick soft cushion padded inner lining. The right collar for a Poodle makes sure that the dog can be walked, trained, and marked in case it gets lost. Wide collar As hunting dogs, Poodles as a breed have extremely quick reflexes and can lunge in an instant. This puts them in danger of injury with thin collars that might dig into their necks. The right collar for a poodle should be at least 1 inch 2. Durable buckle As fast dogs with fast reflexes, Poodles can put a lot of strain on a collar buckle. Flimsy plastic tabs may break at a lunge from the dog. Built-in training handle Poodles are the second most intelligent dog in the world, and for that reason require a lot of training. There are a lot of collar options out there with training handles built in, allowing you to control your dog more humanely than with a choke leash. Some training handles even retract to minimize the risk of the dog snagging them during regular activity Distinctive and decorative Poodles are one of the most recognized breeds in the world, so their owners of course want to display their pride in their dog. Recommended Reading:. Adding to their cuteness, they have friendly personalities to match and love playing or sitting with their owners for hours. While they can be active and playful, they are also great dogs for seniors, people with mobility issues, and ideal therapy dogs. While standard, miniature, and toy poodles are all the same breed with a similar appearance, their size is a big differentiating factor. At around 10 inches tall and a weight of approximately 5 pounds, toy poodles are the smallest. Although they have a reputation for being pets of the rich and famous, they were initially bred as hunting dogs. In the late 18th century, they were featured in artwork by famous German artists and became popular as pets with the French aristocracy. Poodles are among the top ten most popular dog breeds for a good reason: They are highly intelligent, trainable, and eager to please their pet parents. Toy poodles can easily get injured if something falls on them or they accidentally get stepped on. They are also more prone to suffer from knee and hip problems as well as blood clotting disorders. Despite their smaller size, the tiny pups have the same number of teeth as other poodle varieties. Their puppy teeth may sometimes stay intact after their adult teeth appear, making it necessary to pull the baby teeth if they cause trouble. Despite these health considerations, toy poodles live between 10 and 18 years, making them long-time companions. Depending on their size and age, toy poodles only need around to calories daily, and you should also ensure that they get enough exercise. Avoid carrying them around everywhere you go, as tempting as it may be, since they will start to expect this royal treatment and become a little lazy. For example, a six-pound pup can enjoy a diet of calories of protein daily in the form of 3 oz turkey breast, 6 oz chicken breast, or 3 oz salmon in addition to another calories in the form of carbs and healthy fats. Potatoes, rice, and oatmeal are generally safe options, while corn, wheat products, onions, macadamia nuts, avocados, and grapes should all be avoided as they are either toxic to dogs or are common causes of allergies. Meat, an especially salmon, already includes some healthy fats with essential fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins. This diet recommendation should be adjusted if your pup shows signs of allergies or bloating. Allergies can manifest in the form of itchy ears, skin ailments, or a sick stomach. The small size of your toy pup means it can get lost or into trouble quite quickly. Too much pressure from collar-tugging or a front-clip harness can be harmful, causing protruding eyes, neck pain, and limited blood flow. The recommended type of harness for a small dog like a toy poodle is a V-neck, back-clip harness. This harness still gives you control and allows guidance without hurting or damaging its fragile constitution and bone structure. It also is less likely to get tangled during walks. If you want a name collar for your toy poodle, make sure it is lightweight and soft. Their small bodies feel extreme temperatures quickly, so it is vital that they have a safe, warm, and comfortable place to sleep indoors. If you need to get a crate for transport or travel, it is essential that there is enough airflow and that you get the correct size. To determine the size, measure your dog from the base of the tail to the tip of its nose and add four inches for the length. For the height, measure from the tallest point of the head to the ground and add four inches. Extra small dogs usually do well in crates between 18 and 22 inches, while small size dog crates are generally 24 inches. Soft crates are ideal for these small dogs from a comfort perspective. They are, however, difficult to clean and not as durable as plastic and metal crate types. If your pet is still a puppy, keep in mind that it will grow, so you may want to opt for a toy poodle adult-size crate to avoid needing to get another one as it grows. Some dogs instinctively curl up into a ball when they sleep to protect their organs and retain body heat. Donut-shaped beds make for a comfortable, inexpensive, and cozy option. They come in a range of different colors, sizes, and fabrics, are easy to move around and feel secure. Two other bed types suitable for older toy poodles or those with arthritis or other health problems are memory foam and orthopedic dog beds. Orthopedic beds are ideal for dogs with muscle, joint, or hip problems. Providing the right back and neck support can promote recovery at night, improve mobility, and alleviate pain. Always take into account how easy it is to clean the bed, whether the cover is removable, and if it is machine-washable. If you want one, consider the size and ensure it will provide protection and optimal temperature control. While your toy poodle is still a puppy, teething toys can help ease discomfort in its mouth as adult teeth start to appear. A teething toy will also be a beneficial distraction instead of having your furniture, or new shoes chomped. Small squeaky toys are engaging, fun, and durable. Some models allow you to fill a plastic ball with small treats, choose a difficulty level, and let your pup enjoy an interactive and engaging endeavor. Since toy poodles love having their pet parents around, leaving them home alone for hours can be distressing. A companion toy can ease anxiety as it provides your fur-baby comfort and a sense of security. Companion toys come in various designs, either as a pillow, teddy bear, or other soft toy shapes. The snuggly toy simulates the sound of a heartbeat and provides body warmth, providing your pup with a soothing companion at any time. Some designs allow you to turn either feature on or off individually and even to set a timer. This makes them great apartment pets and suitable for owners with allergies. It does mean that their coat will need a lot of brushing and grooming, however. Since poodle hair is naturally curly, it is prone to matting if not taken care of. Matting can cause skin infections which will require your furry pup to be shaved. To avoid skin issues, toy poodles should be brushed daily and need a shampoo and haircut every four to six weeks. Make sure the fur style is easy to maintain. Untended hair growth in the ear canal can result in trapped dirt and wax, which can lead to infections. Although you can just use any brush or feeding bowl, there are options designed to make life a little easier for you and more comfortable for your pup. Small-sized slicker brushes, for example, are ideal if you have a toy poodle since they make brushing out tangles easy and can be more beneficial to maintaining skin and coat health than using any old brush or comb. If you opt for a comb, pick stainless steel and antibacterial option with rounded tips for safety. If your dog is getting on in years and struggling to get up onto the couch or cannot get into the car, get a set of dog stairs or even a vehicle ramp to make it easier and safer. Even if toy poodles have joint troubles, they sometimes take the plunge off the couch or bed when they get excited—making it a little easier to get up and down can prevent further injury. If you and your furry best friend love going to the beach, going for walks, or even doing road trips together, a dog travel water bottle is a must. These water bottles have a foldable flap that allows the water to flow directly into a small bowl for your pup to drink easily while on the go — mess-free! Well, congratulations! This is why you are reading this article. Poodles are the original fancy dog, and they have fun personalities and hardy natures. Both standard and miniature poodles have a glorious, striking coat that distinguishes them from other breeds. Having the best Poodle collars is the first step in helping your dog stay safe and ensuring your dog returns to you in the event of an emergency. When choosing a collar for your poodle, there are several factors to consider: Size and Fit A collar that is too loose can slip off, while one that is too tight can cause discomfort or even injury. Ensure the collar fits snugly but not too tight. Material Collars come in various materials, including nylon, leather, neoprene, and chain. Durability A collar should be able to withstand wear and tear, especially if your poodle is active or enjoys outdoor activities. Look for collars made from high-quality materials that are durable and long-lasting. A poodle puppy should have the same type of fit as an adult. A poodle collar should be snug at first, but a harness is better for growing puppies. Some of you may think this is a silly list. Let me explain why these are all important options to consider in more detail below. Flat collars Flat collars are everyday collars. Many have leash attachments, and all should have a place to put a tag for information. They have a tag holder, like a dog tag. These collars operate on a loop and tighten every time the dog pulls. These collars are made with durable yet comfortable materials too. Smart collars Smart collars for dogs are becoming all the rage — these collars offer special features to help keep track of your dog, record activity levels or provide a helping hand with training. Choke Or Prong dogs Collars Avoid using a choke or prong collar with dogs that are not well-trained. Trainers and rehabbers who specialize in aggressive dogs may use these as a last resort, but in inexperienced hands, they could cause severe damage.
