However, the original color of German Shepherds is sable because they were bred as working dogs. Nowadays, there are a lot of colors that German Shepherds can have. Black and Tan When you think of a German Shepherd, the first picture that comes into your mind is black and tan. The black appears mostly on the upper limb and their faces, while the dominant color for the chest, neck, and underbellies is tan. Black and Red For this one, the black color mostly appears on the saddle or upper limb and face. The chest and underbellies, however, will have a dark red appearance. Black The dog has a pure black coat, and it is very rare. You cannot see any visible color on them aside from black. Their origins are either both black parents or black and tan. Bi-color Bi-color dogs are those that have a dominant black coat color with a sign of another color. Their face, legs, and feet may have minimal color variation. They are bred intentionally. Gray German Shepherds with gray color have a distinctive appearance. You will see the whole body of the dog with the dominant liver color. You can see most of them in dog shows. Its coat is literally like that of a panda! This is a purebred dog and not a combination of parents with different color breeds. The rare gene altercations are responsible for its cute color. The coat appears to have more black and tan colors and a few white spots. Sable Sable is one of the most popular colors of German Shepherds. You can mostly see this coat color with the working lines of German Shepherds. Red Sable Red sables are rare breeds. They are sold expensive because of their unique color. It resembles a rich brownish-red coat. Its fur has black tips. At 24 months, German Shepherds generally tend to stop changing their colors. If you notice an excessive change in color at this point, consult your veterinarian for immediate assessment. There might be some underlying conditions that you need to address. Having said that, many owners, including myself, will purchase a medium-haired German Shepherd having no intention of showing. They appreciate the look and temperament of this type. The type at a glance: Has a double coat and a topcoat with 1 to 2-inch hair. Coat type is not common but not uncommon either. Commands premium price, especially if they have a qualifying color. Also used in various working roles such as law enforcement and service dogs. However, they will also require regular brushing. Again two to three times a week is a good practice. Shedding in plush-coated dogs also increases in the fall and spring when they shed their undercoat ready for the new season ahead. Regular brushing also fluffs up the coat for the best appearance. Before using the de-shedding tool mentioned above, I use the FURminator grooming rake , also from Amazon. This is better for thicker fur, such as the plush coat, and I use it for extra undercoat care. Medium coats should also be bathed times per year as over bathing will dry their skin and remove natural oils. However, their undercoat is often missing, which makes them unfit for AKC conformation events. The hair is often shiny and may form a parting along the back. Feathering occurs on the ears and legs, and they will have longer and thicker fur around the neck, which looks like a mane. On average, the topcoat features hair of at least 2 inches in length. In fact, in many instances, their missing undercoat requires a longer topcoat cover for temperature regulation. Ruskin House of Shepherds Long-haired varieties are considered objectively beautiful. However, their absent undercoat disqualifies them from a competition where said beauty would be rewarded. Because the long-haired variety cannot usually enter conformation, you can buy one much cheaper than a short or medium-coated dog. The least common coat type. Usually commands a lower price. Cannot enter a dog show unless double-coated. Friendlier temperament due to lack of working drive. Shedding is consistent throughout the year in single-coated dogs, without the massive increases in the fall and spring. You will still need to brush them frequently to prevent knots and tangles in the long fur. I recommend a good slicker brush, such as the Hertzko self-cleaning brush from Amazon. This brush is excellent for getting rid of tangles and knots without hurting your doggo, as the fine bristles do not scratch. They also retract back into the brush to avoid getting damaged when not in use. Looking at the appearance of long-coated GSDs, one would assume they require a lot of washing. The lack of an undercoat makes it too risky to wet the topcoat as the dog can get cold. Double Coated or Single Coated? The only German Shepherds with a missing undercoat are the long-haired ones. In some rare instances, a short-haired German Shepherd might have a very thin undercoat and might be disqualified from the show ring for the same reason. You can afford to have a single-coated pet if you live in a warmer climate. With the absence of an undercoat, they are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. That said, you should not pay a premium price for an open coat since such a coat type is considered a fault. Open Coat at a Glance Technically has an undercoat; however, it is practically non-existent as it is extremely thin. Cannot enter dog shows. It is considered a fault, the same as a single coat by the AKC. Should cost less than the average German Shepherd. Temperature Regulation Open coat German Shepherds with longer topcoats are simply called single-coated. If your dog has an open coat, he is vulnerable to the elements. However, experienced breeders can often tell whether a puppy will be long-coated before they turn a month old. It is also common for some unique markings to appear or disappear at this time. Nevertheless, the change in appearance might still be significant between 7 and 18 months old. Their shade could become darker or lighter, and their coat pattern can show some slight changes as well. Changes could still occur as a result of diet, environmental exposure, or health issues. When your GSD puppy is born, all the puppies are typically but not always solid in color. The most common GSD puppy colors are black, grey, or — surprisingly — white. It is therefore vital to understand how different patterns of breeding and inbreeding can affect fitness in real animals. Domestic dogs provide an excellent model, showing dramatic variation in degree of inbreeding and in lifespan, an important aspect of fitness that is known to be impacted by inbreeding in other species. There is a strong negative correlation between body size and lifespan in dogs, but it is unknown whether the higher rate of aging in large dogs is due to body size per se or some other factor associated with large size. We used dense genome-wide SNP array data to calculate average inbreeding for over dog breeds based on autozygous segment length and found that large breeds tend to have higher coefficients of inbreeding than small breeds. We then used data from the Veterinary medical Database and other published sources to estimate life expectancies for pure and mixed breed dogs. When controlling for size, variation in inbreeding was not associated with life expectancy across breeds. When comparing mixed versus purebred dogs, however, mixed breed dogs lived about 1. Furthermore, individual pedigree coefficients of inbreeding and lifespans for over golden retrievers showed that inbreeding does negatively impact lifespan at the individual level. Despite the large total dog population, population sizes for purebred dogs are often small, particularly when considering the breeding population. Reproduction within breeds is usually tightly controlled, sometimes with the goal of modifying specific physical or behavioral traits, and sometimes with the goal of improving health and genetic diversity. These contrasting breeding styles and variable genetic structure across levels of the global dog population provide excellent opportunities for investigation of the genomic and fitness consequences of different breeding systems. Here, we investigate the effects of breeding systems and genomic diversity on a well-known phenomenon of fitness relevance in dogs: the strong inverse relationship between body size and life expectancy. Aging in dogs The domestic dog is well known for its astonishing phenotypic diversity. In variation of body size, the dog far surpasses all other domestic animals, with at least a fold difference between the largest and smallest breeds Wayne and Ostrander .In addition to this diversity of physical form, domestic dog breeds also vary widely in traits of translational value, including disease prevalence and lifespan Fleming et al. This broad, naturally occurring diversity is one of several features that make domestic dogs an attractive model for translational research. Specifically, the dog is an ideal model for research in aging and longevity due to its greater than two-fold natural variation in lifespan and considerable variation among breeds in the risk of specific age-related diseases Fleming et al. An immediate goal for developing the dog as a model of aging is to identify genetic and environmental factors related to aging in dogs Kaeberlein et al. It is well established that body size is an important predictor of lifespan across dog breeds: small breeds live longer than large breeds Galis et al. A recent analysis found that this pattern results from an accelerated rate of aging in larger breeds compared with smaller breeds and not from an inherently higher age-independent risk of mortality Kraus et al. The inverse relationship between body size and longevity in dogs is not unique—the same pattern is observed in horses Brosnahan and Paradis ; Miller and Austad , mice Miller et al. However, these within-species patterns run counter to the general pattern observed across mammalian taxa, where small species like rodents typically live only a few years but large species like whales and elephants can live several decades or more Calder ; Peters ; Read and Harvey .Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the reduced lifespans of larger individuals within species. One hypothesis is that larger individuals are more susceptible to cancer. Large animals grow rapidly during development to reach their adult sizes, and it has been suggested that this makes it more likely that skipping a regulatory checkpoint will cause unchecked growth and tumorigenesis. Nevertheless, analyses of individual breeds have shown that even after excluding individuals dying of cancer, life expectancy remains low in large dogs Bernardi ; Saint Bernard Club of America .Thus, other factors must also contribute to the increased rate of age-related health decline in these dogs. Inbreeding in dogs Many traits, including body size, are under direct selection in dogs. The impressive phenotypic diversity present in dogs has arisen from intensive artificial selection on desired physical and behavioral traits over the course of dog domestication, particularly during the diversification of dog breeds over the last two centuries Larson et al. Dog breeders and other animal breeders establish new breeds by selectively breeding individuals that display certain desired traits. This breeding strategy enables dramatically modified phenotypes to become fixed in a population quickly. However, multiple generations of inbreeding for the purpose of fixing a specific trait can result in offspring that are almost entirely homozygous. Hitch-hiking may result from physical linkage between genomic regions controlling multiple traits Fay and Wu , or from pleiotropic effects of the trait under selection. In free-breeding populations both of dogs and of non-domestic species, genomic inbreeding i. Population reductions, such as those that occur at the formation of new breeds in domestic species, or in natural populations facing anthropogenic or other threats, often result in substantial loss of diversity due to genetic drift. In domestic dogs, the population expands after initial breed formation and new mutations can theoretically increase diversity over time, but in most breeds effective population size Ne is kept relatively small by tightly controlled breeding within closed populations Leroy .Dogs that are not wanted for breeding purposes are commonly neutered, and breeding pairs are usually selected and controlled by humans, so that the reproductive population Ne is much smaller than the census population. Diversity is lost by drift over time, and the population becomes increasingly homozygous. Overall, this reproductive pattern in domestic dogs has resulted in a high potential for inbreeding depression, even in the absence of genetic forces like hitchhiking that can increase the frequency of deleterious variants. Indeed, one recent study found evidence that bottlenecks associated with domestication and breed formation have produced an increased load of deleterious variation in dogs Marsden et al. Inbreeding depression occurs when increased homozygosity causes decreased fitness, due to either unmasking of recessive deleterious variants or the presence of overdominant loci, where the heterozygote has the highest fitness value. Inbreeding depression has been detected in many species in the form of reduced fertility e. This variation, along with ready availability of hybrids in the form of mixed-breed dogs, presents an opportunity to investigate the effects of inbreeding on lifespan at different scales: individual, breed, and inbreeding status pure vs. We hypothesized that inbreeding depression may be responsible for some of the variation in lifespan observed in dogs. In the following analyses, we tested this hypothesis by investigating the relationships between inbreeding, body size, and lifespan both among breeds and within a breed in order to more fully understand the aging process in the domestic dog. Methods Body size and demographic data Male breed-average body weights in kg were obtained from Hayward et al. To reduce bias toward small breeds, we log transformed the weights for our analyses. Inbreeding SNP genotype data were used to calculate inbreeding coefficients based on total autozygous segment length calculated from runs of homozygosity for dogs from breeds.
