Degenerative myelopathy DM can only definitively be diagnosed by identifying classic microscopic changes in the spinal cord on autopsy. DM is strongly suspected in dogs where all other causes for neurologic disease are ruled out. The diagnosis of DM is made with a combination of history, neurologic examination, radiology, and genetic testing. Dogs will have a history of slowly progressive, non-painful weakness and ataxia wobbly gait coupled with muscle atrophy reduction in muscle mass. X-Rays and MRI are typically done to look for other causes of progressive weakness, including cancer and chronic intervertebral disc disease. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis usually shows an increase in protein. It is not uncommon for dogs with degenerative myelopathy to also have chronic disc disease, and deciding whether the gait abnormality is due to compression from chronic disc disease or potential degenerative myelopathy can be difficult in some dogs. Recently, DM has been associated with a genetic mutation in the superoxide dismutase gene, which acts as an anti-oxidant. There is currently a genetic test available through the University of Missouri to identify carriers of this genetic mutation. The mutation is very prevalent in certain breeds i. It is unlikely that dogs that do not have the genetic mutation will have DM. The genetics of DM is very complicated may differ amongst different breeds of dogs. How is degenerative myelopathy treated? Unfortunately, there is no proven effective treatment for degenerative myelopathy. The only treatment that has shown any benefit is regular physical therapy to potentially delay the progression of neurologic signs. Various supplements, stem cell therapy, and diets have been suggested but have never been scientifically proven to be effective. What is the prognosis? Degenerative myelopathy progresses at different rates in each animal, but as there is no effective treatment prognosis is guarded. Many owners opt to purchase hind limb carts to allow their dogs to be mobile when unable to use the hind limbs. Continence is usually retained until the end stages of the disease. Origin The most expensive types of German Shepherds are those that are imported directly from Germany. Breeders must pay to stud and import these dogs which is not cheap. Since the German Shepherd breed originated in Germany, breeders in the US import dogs from Germany to breed puppies with a purebred lineage. Breeding in Europe is more regulated so the bloodlines are better protected. These puppies are known as European German Shepherds and are slightly different. They are smaller, have straighter backs and brighter coat colors. Some people think they look similar to a belgian malinois. Most trainers recommend that you use a standard leash instead of a retractable one. The retractable leashes are ineffective for walking dogs; in fact, the dog ends up walking you. You can take your Australian Labradoodle to a professional trainer, or you can train your dog yourself. The basic commands include sit and the extension, stay , down, no, and leave or drop. You will have to take her to the vet and maybe even to the pet store to pick out a new toy, so knowing the expectations for traveling will make the experience more pleasurable and safe for everyone. I am also getting my dood from Wentwood, and so these comments affect me too. When we were looking for a breeder, I made a fair few phone calls and of all of those, Jacky and Jeff at Wentwood were definately the most helpful and informative. I sent emails and made phone calls to others which were not returned and although I understand that this does not make you a bad breeder but it is very frustrating. Two of these breeders did not want us to come and visit as there would be no puppies for us to see that would be like the litter we would have been interested in. I wanted to see THEM and I certainly did not want to pay any money without meeting them and seeing their set up. Wentwood however, were very welcoming, made us a cup of tea, introduced us to some of their other dogs, and let us and our children spend time with 2 puppies who were an absolute joy. Jeff talked with us for an hour and a half answering any questions and getting a feel for us at the same time. We certainly felt no pressure to put a deposit down and could have left without making any decisions. I get conflicting advice on best breeds etc. I've been researching for a long time. Over 2 years. We're on a waiting list for a breeder who specialises in labradoodles and 'poo' dogs. We're on a waiting list for a Yorkiepoo. This is because we want a smallish dog with less shedding as possible. I work from home in a garden office so the dog will be with me all day. We have a large garden and a huge green area opposite our house. My dcs are 10 and 7. Ds and I have an animal hair allergy but it is eased with antihistamines. My dh will brush the dog regularly. I have a lot to learn. I'm excited but apprehensive. Please tell me my decisions so far are okay and it's okay to come back.
