Puppy pads Create a Schedule Golden Retriever pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. It can even grow louder as they age. Moderate Training Golden Retrievers responds well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. Clark, J. Thank you for understanding and respecting our policy and we look forward to meeting you! Buyer Beware It is very concerning and heartbreaking to find so many puppymills on the internet now. Please be aware that there are pet stores and websites advertising each breed of dog claiming to be a 'breeder directory' but they are actually puppymills. Just because a website has a lot of pictures does not mean that those pictures were not stolen from other breeders!! Puppymills are massive breeding facilities that only view dogs as commodities. Breeding dogs are housed in shockingly poor conditions and bred until they can no longer produce, with very little human contact and suffer from neglect, poor health, parasitic infestations, and horrific wounds because they are forced to live on their feces confined to small filthy cages. So many people own dogs that have come from puppymills and dont even realize it. Unfortunately puppymills are thriving on the internet because buyers are not aware that such cruelty exists. Making such a purchase does not "rescue" the puppy- it in fact condemns puppymill dogs to a life of torture. It is estimated that there are over 4 million dogs being bred in puppymills every single year! And this number is growing. The current laws are insufficient in protecting dogs and puppies from neglect and exploitation. We have been awarded. By cataloging helpful information about the breed and offering networking services to breeders and owners, we promote responsible dog companionship and strive to make a positive difference in the Australian Labradoodle community. All purebred dogs began by crossbreeding dogs of two or more different breeds to achieve desirable traits. Dogs displaying those traits were bred to each other to continue the breed development. This has been going on for hundreds of years. The development of the Australian Labradoodle is no different. Forward thinking breeders in Australia began breeding these labradoodles to a number of other dog breeds in an effort to produce litters with consistent conformation, coat type, and temperament. Most often the English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel were the breeds used with the labradoodle, however, it is reported that a few other dog breeds were also introduced into certain early lines. It is the combination of all these breeds that make up what we call the Australian Labradoodle today. The Australian Labradoodle is a purpose bred dog, with its beginnings as a service dog. Today it is also sought out as a family companion especially for those who suffer from allergies or prefer its non-shedding qualities. Here in the USA, the Australian Labradoodle Association of America ALAA has been monitoring the development of this breed by maintaining a database of pedigrees and health testing of registered dogs for almost twenty years. While the Australian Labradoodle is not considered an AKC recognized breed, we do have a breed standard that conscientious breeders work towards. We have elected to keep our stud books open which means we allow for the development of new lines using registered Labradors, Poodles and Cocker Spaniels in an effort to expand our gene pool and keep inbreeding to a minimum. These new lines are then bred into existing lines that date back to the founding dogs from Australia. This of course is an option for breeders and there are many who are only working with descendants of the dogs from Australia while others have dogs that are a combination of old and new lines. It is our breed standard and our pedigree database that dictates the breed development and breeders choose pairings to improve temperament, coat and structure working within the guidelines set out by the ALAA. The ALAA has made extensive efforts to track and verify the pedigrees of our registered dogs, therefore, an ALAA verified pedigree is the only true identifier of an Australian Labradoodle. My first litter was a complete success! My girl, Gheera, gave birth to 10 healthy, smart, well-built, puppies. At East German Shepherd Kennel Vom Laudenbach, our hobby is the German Shepherd dog, which as a friend and family member, is a main part of our daily life. Our dogs live with us as family members in the house, but they are also used to kennels. The dogs are with us all day, are well socialized, and they love to be taken everywhere. What is fascinating about them is their charisma, body structure, nature and their strong will. The DDR Shepherd dog often takes significantly more time to mature then others. We strive to breed healthy, strong-nerved, performance-related dogs that are suitable for dog sports as well as for the family. Puppies from our breeding program are only given to capable and loving hands. We breed dogs with a balanced nature and absolute family loyalty. We want our puppies to have a long, healthy and happy life with their humans. Therefore, if you choose a puppy from us, you have to consider that the German Shepherd is a working dog and therefore it definitely needs training, structure and a job. If you are interested in a puppy from our DDR breeding, please email me a message in which you briefly describe yourself and your environment pictures are always welcome. Our dogs are purely for lovers and we definitely want to know more about our puppy's future home and family! Contact Us for Details on Our Puppies! After the surrender of Germany at the conclusion of the war, Berlin and the remaining German territory was partitioned into four occupation zones by the Allied forces. Strict breeding criteria was put in place and breed wardens aggressively culled dogs with any sign of hip dysplasia or weak temperament. DDR dogs were bred for power and athleticism , with straight toplines and large, strong heads. Breed wardens inspected every litter for proper dentition, temperament, bone structure, ear set, coat quality, and total overall appearance. Males with undescended testicles were culled. While West German dogs were tested over five-foot angled walls, East German dogs were required to scale straight six-foot walls. West German dogs searched six blinds, DDR dogs searched ten blinds. West German tracking tests included eight corners and angles, DDR tracking tests included .The DDR border patrol dogs served as sentries, tracking dogs, and attack dogs. Special units were formed to track deserters over large expanses of countryside. When the German borders were opened in the need for guards and guard dogs ended. Within five months of the border opening half of the 50, guards had been dismissed with the remainder retained to dismantle the border fortifications. Many of the DDR dogs were sold, abandoned, or put down. Today, Vom Banach K9 is one of a small number of dedicated breeders worldwide actively preserving the DDR lineage and its physical soundness and structure, intelligence, working abilities, natural drive, highly developed tracking abilities , temperament, and devotion to their handler. Perhaps we will see the day when fashion gives way to balance and the Golden Middle rises supreme, not as a choice among many, but rather as the only sensible option. In the meantime, on the eve of the centennial celebration of the "king of breeds" on this earth, let us remember the final plea of its founder, Max von Stephanitz's last words to his good friend Muller on his deathbed, "Take this trouble for me: make sure my German Shepherd Dog remains a WORKING dog, for I have struggled all my life long for that aim". He brings back the old-style heavy bone type along with tremendous working abilities. He has the legendary look of the East German bloodlines along with the superior temperament and performance qualities of the West German working lines. Transitions between active and passive behavior perfectly on command. Shows an excellent relationship with his handler in obedience with reliable fast reactions to the commands. Steady and sure, impossible to find fault, always full of self-confidence with nerves of steel. But he pulled it together and earned a nice score of .He finished his CD title, then moved up to the Graduate Novice class. He earned two legs for that title. One with second place and the other with first place. Both with first place and very nice scores. He was also High in trial for protection. PS1 .All of this in the rain and on a feild and decoy he has never worked on. The obedience was not quite up to par with the rain .Nice job 3 titles in 3 months. He earned his PS3 title with second place and a very nice protection score .We are very proud of him working two days in a row and adding two high level titles at his young age. We were very please how he handled having 3 judges on field and all of them very close in their scores.

Raising a puppy while working is tough, but it can be done. Puppies have different needs depending on their age. After those intense first few weeks, things ease off. A combination of planning, friends, and paid help will certainly be a great support for you. Oh, those puppy eyes! Leaving that adorable bundle of cuteness is hard, but is it fair? Actually, yes it is. This can make them over-dependent on people. How long can puppies hold their pee? This is the number of hours they can hold their bladder. For example, a two-month-old pup can hold for three hours max. A four-month-old pup can hold for five hours. This equation levels out at around 6—7 months, with no dog being comfortable holding their pee above eight hours. Excluding comfort breaks mean risking the puppy getting confused about potty training, therefore, leading to an untrained dog. This raises the question: What to do about the dog while at work? The answer is to get help. They need toilet breaks at least every three hours for more options see the Toilet Training section. Somehow they need walks outside for potty training and a game to amuse them. This means planning ahead. Popping home in your breaks; Having a friend or neighbor called in; Employing a dog walker or puppy sitter to drop by; Leaving pup with a friend; Doggie daycare. And to plug the gap a dog walker calls in. But this still means leaving the puppy alone for some of the days. How do you keep your puppy happy? Keeping Your Puppy Happy People have strong opinions about whether raising a puppy while working full time is fair to the dog. Moreover, raising a puppy in an apartment! Their main objection is that puppies need companionship and plenty of play. Of course, it fills you with sadness to think your pup might miss out, so what to do with a dog while at work? Rule 1 is to leave the puppy pleasantly tired. This means plenty of play before heading out to work. Problem one sorted! Rule 2 is to give the puppy plenty to occupy them in-between visits. As well as the friend playing with the puppy, have a variety of toys and games pre-prepared for them to pop in with your pup when they leave. Rule 3 is to think about your puppy's safety before you leave. Make their space safe from things that could harm or scare them. Hide the glass vase, put away cutting or piercing objects, and dog treats, so your child doesn't eat too much. If you need even more reassurance that your dog is safe and that you can leave them alone, there is a solution. So you can be prepared if something happens to your four-legged friend in your absence. Freeze the Puzzle Feeder: In warm weather, freeze the food-filled Kong. It will take the puppy hours to lick out their meal. This provides great mental stimulation to prevent boredom from setting in. Safe Chew Toys: Make sure the toy is sturdy enough to be left with a teething puppy. Smear the toy with peanut butter, to make it extra tasty. The Cardboard Box Trick: Seal a treat inside a cardboard box. Let the puppy chew through to the treat. Rolled-up Newspaper: Put a few pieces of kibble or a treat inside a rolled-up newspaper. Add tape around it to stop the treats from falling out and offer it as a chew toy. You get the idea! No one said that doing it while working was easy! It hurts to be away from your pup. Petcube is more than a pet camera although this is important. While at your desk, Petcube shows what your furry friend is up to right there and then. More than this, you can speak to your pup through Petcube. Establish good behaviors, even from a distance. With Petcube dog camera you can praise them for resting peacefully and get them into good habits. As virtual pet sitting goes, Petcube spells furry fun for your pet pal. Preventing Separation Anxiety If the puppy links your disappearance with long hours of tedium, they may cry for you to return. This can become a learned behavior, where the dog cries when left alone. Preventing this means leaving boredom busters for the pup to play with see above. And you can always discuss tips for raising a puppy with a vet online! So when you leave, you make a big fuss, give lots of cuddles, bury your face in their fur, and apologize for going. Heck, you may even shed a tear or two. But what message does this send to the pup? Puppy cries when left alone. You soothe their crying, hence rewarding their anxiety. This is a pattern of action and reward which ends with the dog always acting up when you leave. In fact, sneak out. Play with the pup ahead of leaving. Then settle them down with a chew stick. Also, shake up your leaving routine. Change the order in which you put on your coat and pick up the car keys. Go out through different doors. So how to potty train a puppy when you work? The Puppy Pen Method A puppy that regularly soils themselves will stop trying to hold on. Down this path lies the dog that is not house trained. Encourage and praise the puppy to use the pads as a toilet. Done badly, a crate is a prison and a place that a puppy will hate spending time in. How to potty train a puppy with a crate? If necessary, buy a larger crate but use a partition to get the size right. Then make the crate super comfy with a soft bed and some toys. Good Things Happen in the Crate Hide treats in the crate and let the puppy find them. Put great toys in the crate. Feed the puppy in the crate with the door open. The idea is that the puppy will begin to link the crate to good things. Reward Calm Behavior Feed your puppy in the crate and briefly close the door. Praise their calm behavior and then open the door. Gradually extend the length of time the door is closed. Be sure to tell your pup how clever they are for remaining calm. This rewards their good behavior, rather than crying. Leave the Room With your puppy in the closed crate, leave the room for a few seconds. Only return when they are quiet and then let them out and give lots of praise. Well done! You now have a crate-trained puppy. Your puppy is kept safely away from objects they may chew or swallow; They feel safe in their den; It promotes good bladder and bowel control. First, crate train your puppy, and second, arrange for regular toilet breaks at appropriate intervals. Before leaving for work, play with your pup and take them out for a potty break. When they go, give the usual praise and reward. Then pop your pup into the crate with a safe chew toy. Make a low-key departure for work. Check that they are OK via Petcube. Have a friend pop in to give them a comfort break. For a week-old puppy, make sure this is at least every 3 hours. Take your pup to the potty training spot by this time they should be busting , and praise and reward when they go. Play with your pup and then settle them back down into the crate. Repeat this throughout the day until you return home from work. Few puppies have any bladder control before 8 weeks of age and this basically answers the question "can I leave my 8 week old puppy home alone? Some pups learn faster than others, so be patient. Set Up for Success Recognize when a puppy is most likely to pee. A puppy is easily distracted and will probably play with a leaf rather than concentrate on the job. Never Punish a Puppy When a puppy has an accident in the wrong place, never smack or rub their face in it. This makes toilet training harder, not easier, as a puppy learns you have an irrational dislike of their bodily function. Clean Accidents Effectively Clean up spills with a good deodorizing cleaner. This removes scent markers that might draw the puppy back to the same spot. Plan ahead, ask for help, and use Petcube to raise a puppy through those demanding early days. The reward is a well-adjusted adult dog with a wagging tail to welcome you home at the end of a long day. Plus, you can always have a peace of mind for your pup in case of a critical medical emergency. Petcube has got you covered for that as well. Woofs to happy puppies! Was this article helpful? Little French Dog is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. Teaching Alone Time You can start by confining your French Bulldog in the confinement area with a chew toy or another constructive activity, then quietly walk out of the room. Praise and treat them immediately upon your return. Each time, increase the length of your absence slowly. At first, even one to two minutes might seem too long for your Frenchie, but over a build, too much longer periods. Che periodically over the next three or four days on your French Bulldog as time increases. You can reward them with a treat and some low-key praise if they are quiet and calm before leaving. Keep an eye on them without making too much noise. Crying during confinement indicates you have either begun training before your French Bulldog has learned to associate their environment with good things or that you have left them alone too long. Otherwise, you will teach them that whining opens doors and earns your attention. Reduce the time they spend in confinement to what they can handle and gradually increase it. It can be disastrous to leave your French Bulldog alone in their area with nothing to do. Instead, you should provide constructive activities whenever they are in their containment area. They will learn to be happy on their own by doing this. A food-stuffed chew toy is a perfect activity to keep a young Frenchie interested in chewing and being distracted. It is perfectly fine to use toys like Kongs since the food inside the toy reinforces the chewing behavior. Radios and TVs are also great ways to provide companionship for French Bulldogs left alone. This can obfuscate distressing noises such as honking cars or garbage trucks. Allow your dog to spend more time alone each day. You should assess how long you can leave them alone before they need to go toilet by taking note of toilet habits. Dogs often feel more comfortable in a small space. When you leave, crates and single rooms can keep your French Bulldog safe while you are gone. Make sure to place the crate in a familiar, comfortable place where the dog will not be exposed to the sun and be warm. Only create your French Bulldog if they are used to it. Make sure you remove all items you do not want to be broken or chewed on if they get a little out of control. Protect Your Most Your Frenchie Family Member You need a system in place so that French Bulldog is safe when you are not at ho Keep any dangerous items out of reach of your Frenchie and carefully dog-proof your home. In case of an emergency or if you cannot reach home immediately, you should have a backup plan. If it was up to most French Bulldogs, they would never be left alone. You may have to work or go someplace and leave the dog. The length of time you can leave the dog alone depends on a couple of factors. Puppies can only hold it in so long. Large dogs can be left alone for a longer amount of time. This is generally the longest time any dog should be left home alone. Eight hours is a long time even with an adult dog, but if the dog has had some training, he will generally get better with time. Another option is to speak with your veterinarian. However, when their owners work 8-hour days, they can usually hold it that long. For this breed especially, if you need to be away a long time, you might look into other avenues to give your dog some company. Among them: friends, neighbors, and family to look in on your dog, dog walking services, stopping home on a lunch break, or doggy daycare services. Anything after 8 hours is considered a long time for a dog, but dogs tend to adjust almost as though they have their own internal clock. One thing worth keeping in mind is that every dog is different. If you live in a larger city, you can use the services of professionals. Rover — The professionals working for this company will sit with your dog at their establishment or at your home. They offer pet sitting, pet walking, and pet boarding, among many other services. You can also schedule walks ahead of time. Pet Sitters International — You call this company and they will connect you with professional pet sitters available in your area. We also like to check Facebook community groups and ask for a reference there. After the initial excitement of having a new puppy wears off, one of the first thing dog owners do is begin training the puppy simple commands like sit, down, stay, come. What we seldom teach our puppies is how to deal with separation. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Here are some tips on how to help your French Bulldog puppy adapt better at being alone. Make them as low key as possible. Provide your dog with plenty of exercise find out how much here , especially prior to your leaving. A tired dog is more likely to sleep and less likely to have the energy to make noise or be destructive. Give the dog a treat before you leave and when you return so he associates your leaving with good things. Do not reward bad behavior. He loves Elk Antlers! Unfortunately, some dogs never completely get over separation anxiety. Related Questions: What is Separation Anxiety? Separation anxiety is exactly what the name implies. Depending on the dog, the separation anxiety may be mild where he only cries a little, or it can be serious separation anxiety that causes the dog to pace restlessly, bark constantly, and even destroy furniture, doors, or other property. However, make sure you put safe toys in the crate. Puzzle feeders, puzzle toys, and similar interactive toys are great because they are not only time-consuming for the dog, but French Bulldogs also find these very mentally stimulating. Most of these have treats or food inside, which makes the dog even more eager to play with them. Keep in mind that a lot of issues can be easily avoided with the right practices and training techniques. Save yourself time and frustration by implementing the correct approaches right from the start. March 23, French Bulldog: The Frenchie an ideal work from home companion As our working lives are being tipped upside down, many of us now find ourselves working from home, who knows how long this new norm will last, but for now its reality and no matter your job you need to stay in reality. Working from home is a discipline, for those who have done it for a long time, know how important maintaining a routine and keeping normality is. Get up at your usual time; have a shower, change, have breakfast and start working at the same time you usually would. The advantage now is no travel. Consider that you have at least an extra 30mins up your sleeve; for some it is probably much longer. Set your timer in one-hour increments, each hour get up, go for a quick minute walk with your pooch, make a phone call and talk to somebody and then hit the PC again for another solid hour. Repeat and repeat until lunchtime. Try to do something physical, maybe plant something, mow the lawn or clean a room in your house. Hit the PC again and repeat until your normal knock off time. This sets you up to get ahead each day and before long you see that working from home can be highly productive; so long as you follow the discipline, keep distractions at a minimum and allow the voice in your head to talk positively. A dog is an awesome home companion and it is hard to go past the stylish and in vouge French Bulldog as the ideal work from home companion. The Frenchie does not need a large amount of exercise. A few small daily walks and bit of play time is enough to keep them going and to keep their weight under control, along with responsible feeding. An excellent one on one dog, when you find yourself working from home, the Frenchie is quiet happy curled up at your feet snoozing as you tap away. They adapt very well to apartment living and hence their popularity with singles and couples so long as you get them out for a short period of the day, which you should do for your own wellness and having the pooch with you is great company and excellent motivation to get moving. As a puppy it is recommend to crate train. The breed is intelligent and love to explore. Crate training is a safe way to house your pup even if you intend on letting them have the run of the house when an adult. They can be a bit stubborn and positive reinforcement during training is required. The Frenchie wants to please, he wants to show you great affection and expects the same in return. Playtime is their best time and challenging their mind is just as important as physical exercise. Games are a great way to keep this dog mentally happy. Health As mentioned the Frenchie is not the worlds healthiest dog breed; naturally there is always exceptions to the rule however you should be prepared for: Brachycephalic Syndrome The flat faces, short heads, narrow nostrils and soft or elongated palates create breathing issues in this breed. The airways can become obstructed. This will occur to varying degrees creating laboured and often noisy breathing, snuffling and snorting and may even result in a collapse of the airways. Surgery and oxygen therapy is available however it is not cheap.

Unfortunately, Facebook is such an important social media platform that we can't just tell Facebook to sod off and go somewhere else. There really isn't anywhere else that is comparable. But there ARE solutions. Disclaimer—Post at Your Own Risk Before we get into any of the real marketing topics, I want to talk about selling puppies on Facebook since most of us have been hit so hard by them lately. First, I want to make it clear that: Facebook is in charge, not me. So they can do whatever they want despite what I say here. They can change their policies. They can delete whatever they want despite their policies. Nothing I say here is a guarantee. This is my opinion only. If you take action based on what I say here please know I can't be responsible. Please see 1 as to why. Ok, the real info now. The truth of the matter is that you CAN still advertise puppies on Facebook. However, there are restrictions. There are also animal rights extremists reporting pages and posts, so even if you are following the rules you may get reported and you MUST challenge the report and succeed to avoid Facebook jail or deletions. Or in Facebook page shops or Instagram shops. Facebook will often automatically change your post to a Marketplace post if they think you are selling something. Do NOT click to post if they do this. You will get dinged! Not allowed: "Content that attempts to sell live animals between private individuals. This is where most people get reported. As of this writing, Facebook states on their reporting policy that animal sales are NOT allowed between individuals but ARE allowed by "businesses that sell other animals from a storefront or website. Facebook DOES allow animal sales if posted by a business. However, Facebook itself gets to decide if you are in fact a legitimate business. So it may be more than just having a business page. This is where things get vague and sketchy and where you have to decide your own level or risk tolerance. The more you appear like a legit business, the less likely you will be to have problems. But you also need to make sure that you actually are legit--they can and do check on these things. What I've done that allows me to so far advertise puppies on Facebook on my business page and in paid boosts and ads without problems is to: Include in my page name that I'm an LLC Have an established presence. This includes an established website, a Google Business listing, Google reviews, Facebook reviews, and everything else you can think of that will back up the fact that you are a legitimate business. Have my Facebook business page verified. They gave me a really hard time, but my business is legit and I kept at it. If you aren't legit, you may not want to try this because if they decide you are NOT a legit business they could give you some trouble. If you have a business line that is a land line registered to your business, they sometimes verify just by calling that number. I only use a cell, so this wasn't an option for me. Here is a list of documents Facebook will accept for verification. They initially refused me time and time again. I went through about half a dozen rounds with them. I supplied them with the documents they asked for and kept getting rejected for some reason. But I kept at it and finally after weeks of this they Verified me. They were sure to tell me they could change their minds any time they wanted, but, hey, at this point I'll take what I can get. To veryify your page you must include a phone number and address. So far, people seem to be able to use their personal page to SHARE posts that are made on business pages. But never, never, ever, post about puppies from a personal profile. It's too much like Social Media Russian Roulette. Good luck and Godspeed! Again, remember this is al at your own risk. Facebook is a scary place for anyone working with animals these days! You are not alone! Book with Ji or Hariamrit. Reach many interested people who want to give your puppies a good home. Free goat dogs two girls free must take both callshow contact info. This is because they are prone to many health issues and breeders have to spend a lot of money to keep them healthy. Likewise, Pugs need a safe environment and providing that comes at a cost. This allows the breeders to charge more for them and dog enthusiasts are willing to pay. Reputable Breeder Reputable breeders are more likely to take care of the health and well-being of the puppies. Reputed breeders also provide a lot of extras, like microchips, vaccinations, and health guarantees. Are Pugs in Constant Pain? Click here to find out. What Papers are Needed for Getting Pugs? Female Pug: Which Is Better? The initial cost of a puppy alone will set you back at least a few hundred dollars. But why are they so expensive? There is no one factor that directly determines how much a Pug puppy will cost. There are multiple factors often working hand in hand. Getting some background knowledge in these things will give you a better grasp on what makes Pug puppies so expensive and where your money is going. This will also help you figure out the right Pug that fits within your budget. Here are some of the major factors affecting Pug prices: Age: As a rule of thumb, puppies typically cost more than adult dogs. This is no different when it comes to Pugs. Pug puppies are typically more expensive as the process of breeding can cost the breeders a lot of money. From health screenings to vitamins and sometimes even c-sections, it takes a lot of money to keep the mama dog happy. Appearance: Although there are only two registered Pug colors in the American Kennel Club, Pugs can often be seen in a wide assortment of shades. Rarer brindle coats tend to fetch a higher price than solid colored pups, and fawn or apricot Pugs with a black mask are also experiencing a rise in cost. A Pug from a reputable breeder, although expensive, will have perfect health, a good temperament, and no pre-existing medical conditions such as PDE or Pug dog encephalitis. A lot of reputable breeders also breed dogs from champion bloodlines, which ensures that the Pugs will inherit the best traits from their parents. A Pug with a superior lineage will cost significantly more than a regular Pug. Health Screenings: A vast majority of Pug breeders usually screen their puppies for pre-existing health issues before selling them. Healthy puppies with no signs of underlying medical issues will usually have a heftier price tag than others and will save you vet expenses in the long run. Training Received: Although Pugs are good family dogs, they can be quite stubborn and challenging to train. So if a Pug breeder trains their puppies before selling them, expect the price to be relatively higher than usual. Bringing home trained puppies is always worth it, though, as it saves you time and effort. These are just some of the most significant things that affect the price of a Pug dog. Of course, this list is by no means complete. Rescues generally have a lower price tag for their Pugs. What makes the deal even more ideal is that most shelter dogs have already been fully vaccinated. Additionally, many of them have already been dewormed, spayed or neutered, or even microchipped in some cases. Here are some of the initial expenses for your Pug puppy: Food and Treats: Deciding between wet or dry food is crucial in the first few days that your Pug dog comes home. If your Pug is a picky eater, you may need to try out different brands and flavors to see which one your pup likes best. This also applies to doggy treats. Ultimately though, stainless steel bowls will withstand more wear and tear. Crate: For first-time dog owners, a crate is one of the most important things to invest in. Crate training your pup is important, as it introduces them to a safe space when they feel overstimulated or unsafe. It also helps transport your Pug dog to places like the vet or during car rides. Leashes and Collars: As soon as you bring your new dog home, it is important that you get them acquainted with a leash and collar. Some dogs take a while to get adjusted to wearing harnesses, so starting pups with a collar while getting them used to daily walks is optimal. Toys: Pugs often have a reputation for being lazy, sleepy dogs, but this is not the case at all. A well-stimulated, happy Pug will be playful and alert rather than spend most of its time sleeping. Enrichment objects such as chew toys and puzzle toys are sure to keep your puppy busy and your slippers and charging cables safe from bites. Grooming Essentials: Although they have short fur, Pugs are double-coated. This means that they shed more than other short-haired dogs. Deworming, Flea, and Tick Medications: A lot of Pug breeders typically cover deworming, flea, and tick prevention before selling their puppy. Initial Vaccine Shots: Before a Pug puppy turns one year old, they need to complete their first set of vaccine shots. The usual shots most dogs need are for distemper, parainfluenza, rabies, parvovirus DHPP , and hepatitis. Neutering or Spaying: If you have no plans of breeding your Pug, it may be good to consider neutering or spaying them. If done at the right age, getting your dog fixed will help prevent the risk of some cancers and uterine infections. Dog License: While it may seem unnecessary at first, licensing your dog is a great way to have a permanent formal record of your ownership. This is especially helpful if your dog gets lost. Licensing also lets people know if your dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations. A microchip will come in handy if ever you lose your pooch. It does not, however, work as a GPS tracker. If your lost puppy gets taken to a shelter or a clinic, they can easily scan the chip and contact you immediately. These include vitamins , pet-safe wipes, poop bags, and a poop scooper. Few people can resist the goofy smile of a Pug. However, the market price of a Pug will vary greatly based on a few important factors, such as the blood line, breeder reputation, location, and coat color. However, compared to other dog breeds, Pugs are not very cheap. Though you can certainly find one for much less, the average cost of a healthy Pug from a good breeder is not something to scoff at. There are plenty of factors that can determine how much a Pug will cost you. For instance, location, breeder reputation, pedigree and colors can all play a factor in Pug price. Location Unfortunately, the price of a Pug can vary depending on where you are. In some countries such as the UK , these dogs will likely cost a lot more. And even in the same country, the price will vary by location state, city, region, etc. If you must pick up a Pug in a certain region, then there is very little you can do. Driving for more than 10 hours one way may require an overnight stay. Pedigree and Lineage The pedigree or bloodline of a Pug will matter in regards to price. In fact, this may be the most important factor for price variation seen in all dog breeds, including Pugs. According to Business Insider , the prices of pedigree dogs such as Pugs are climbing to an all-time high. So what exactly is a pedigree dog? These dogs have at least 3 generations without any crossbreeding. Anything less is technically not a pedigree dog. However, there has been concern and controversy over the overbreeding of pedigree dogs. These dogs are bred over and over again using dogs from the same family. Inbreeding can lead to a lower life expectancy in Pugs, as well as potential degenerative diseases and mutations. Rather, the opposite is likely to happen. Pugs with a superior lineage will cost much more than a Pug without. And when I say superior lineage, I really mean champion lineage. Champion dogs are those that win an event at an AKC event. Sometimes, these dogs can command a hefty premium if they have an impressive long list of ancestors. Another great reason to go with AKC registered Pugs is that you can confirm the lineage of the pup. Reputable Pug Breeder There are two types of breeders you can purchase a Pug from: reputable and non-reputable breeders. I always highly recommend finding a reputable breeder. However, just like in every industry, reputation comes with a premium price. By reputable breeders, I really mean responsible breeders. The American Kennel Club inspects thousands of kennels each year and provide certification to those that breed responsibly. But because these breeders are recognized and recommended by the AKC, their puppies do come with a premium. These colors are fawn and black. Selling different colored dogs for different prices is frowned upon. However, even reputable breeders do this. Unfortunately, this is a classic example of supply and demand. In addition, expect the apricot, silver and apricot fawn colors also see a markup in prices. Less common dogs cost more. Personally, I think the classic fawn Pug with a black mask is the most attractive. No matter what color, all Pugs will be loving dogs and companions. To sum things up, the key is to shop around. There are so many great adoption websites with plenty of Pugs that need a new home. The first site I highly recommend is Adopt-a-Pet. With just a quick check, I already see plenty of Pugs on that marketplace! Another fantastic website is PetFinder. Have a check for yourself! Visit Your Local Animal Shelters Adopting a Pug from an animal shelter is always the best, that is, if you can find one. Do a simple Google search for shelters near you and check Yelp too! When doing your research, check to see if they have a website. It might be a good idea to check that before driving all the way there. It really depends on the shelter, but adoption fees can vary a lot. Are Pugs Worth the Price? But are they really worth the cost? Pugs are some of the most entertaining dogs you can find. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. Ask if the breeder will take the Pug back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. As these goldens are becoming more common, more and more people have questions about them. Are English cream golden retrievers the same as American golden retrievers? What makes these white-coated dogs so unique? Continue reading to learn the truth about English cream golden retrievers! An all-white golden retriever is simply a golden retriever with a pale-colored coat. Unlike their more golden-toned cousins, these dogs have a cream or almost white coat color. The difference between the two dogs emerged over time. Golden retrievers were originally created by Scottish breeders in the 19th century. This dog breed was developed over the course of more than 50 years. Several different types of breeds were introduced into the mix over time to create the dog we know and love today. Eventually, the standard golden retriever breed was born. Today, we call these American golden retrievers and English cream golden retrievers. Truth be told, the white golden retriever is actually just a broad name given to English cream golden retrievers. This is because this variety tends to have lighter-colored coats—hence the white name. In fact, these dogs go by several different names, including platinum retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, or simply white retriever. If a breeder or anyone else claims differently, know that they are trying to scam you! English Cream Golden Retriever vs. American Golden Retriever As I touched on earlier, the white retriever is simply a different type of golden retriever. In general, they will have the same temperament and exercise requirements. They will both shed profusely and will need similar amounts of mental stimulation. However, there are still a few key differences that are worth noting here. The largest and most obvious one is appearance. Instead of having a yellow-toned coat color, the white retriever has, as you might imagine, a cream-toned white coat. There can be some shading variation within this category, but not very much. There are also some other physical differences. These include blockier, broader heads, bigger bones, and darker skin than traditional goldens. The white retriever variation has a more rounded eye shape, whereas traditional goldens have darker, more almond-shaped eyes. There is also a slight difference between the two in terms of size. The breed standard states that male English cream golden retrievers should be from 22 to 24 inches tall, while females are between 20 and 22 inches tall. On the other hand, the breed standard for traditional golden retrievers states that males should be 22 to 23 inches in height, while females are anywhere from .Another difference worth noting is that English cream golden retrievers have an average lifespan of 12 years. Traditional golden retrievers, on the other hand, have slightly shorter lifespans at around 10 to 11 years. This is definitely something worth considering if you have set your eyes on bringing a golden into your home. Having a vet fund on hand for your dog is essential in case of emergencies or sudden health issues. In terms of temperament, the dogs are roughly the same, though white golden retrievers have been noted to be somewhat more relaxed than American golden retrievers. You need to be sure to take your golden outside every day for exercise and enrichment—otherwise, you will have a mischievous and even destructive dog on your hands. If you are interested in a new companion, a white golden retriever dog is a great choice. These dogs are fun-loving, patient, and extremely loyal to their humans. In particular, we highly recommend goldens for families. These dogs love lots of attention and enjoy groups of people. They are also easy to train and are perfect for young children. On top of that, English cream golden retrievers adjust to any type of home, and they especially like being involved in all family activities. As long as they get enough exercise, your white golden will happily curl up on the couch next to you at the end of the day. An English cream golden retriever will also be a great companion for family movie nights, only asking for belly rubs from time to time during the film. This is in stark contrast to Labradors and some other types of retriever dogs that get bored easily and need a lot of mental stimulation. All types of retrievers, including English cream golden retrievers, are highly intelligent and easy to train. Known for their eager-to-please and obedient natures, goldens make great pets even for newbie dog parents who have no prior experience training a dog. They also are not the best guard dogs. Though goldens are loyal to their owners, they quickly befriend strangers and are more likely to greet an intruder with a wagging tail than a threatening bark!

Sometimes called a Bull-Pug, the Miniature Bulldog is a cross between an English Bulldog and a Pug, Puggle, or French Bulldog to create a smaller size bulldog that will be perfect for your family. English Bulldogs were bred to bait, guard, and control bulls while Pugs have been companions to royals since about BC. They are peaceful and get along well with animals and people. You may find that some males are territorial or try to display dominance or aggression toward other male dogs. By nature, Bulldogs may occasionally display overprotective behaviors, but early training and socialization can help you manage it. Miniature bulldogs may exhibit a slightly calmer and more laid-back demeanor compared to their toy counterparts while still possessing these admirable traits. These dogs are not easy to train and are not known for being the most intelligent, so they require patient and consistent dog owners who invest in positive reinforcement. They are devoted companions who love nothing more than snoozing and snoring the day away. General care of the toy Bulldog Exercise needs The toy Bulldog has minimal exercise requirements. About two minute daily walks are OK, as these dogs are prone to heat exhaustion. You can add additional playtime during the day to keep them active. labrador retriever puppies for sale mn - While dog or puppy hiccups can be endearing to us, they can be annoying for your dog. What Are Dog and Puppy Hiccups? Hiccups in dogs and puppies are caused by rapid contraction of the diaphragm. When a dog breathes in, their diaphragm contracts and moves downward, making space in the chest cavity for their lungs to expand. When a dog breathes out, their diaphragm relaxes and moves up into their chest cavity as their lungs contract. Diaphragm movements are usually smooth and regular, but when the diaphragm suddenly spasms, the result is a hiccup. Hiccups are involuntary, and once triggered, this reflex causes a contraction of the diaphragm followed quickly by closure of the vocal cords specifically the glottis , which results in the "hic" sound. This contraction or myoclonic jerk of the diaphragm may repeat several times per minute. Do Hiccups Hurt Dogs? They can be annoying when they last for long periods, but dogs tend to remain calm during these contractions, with no signs of stress, anxiety , or pain. Hiccups can last for only a few seconds to hours in rare instances, but they normally do not require any treatment. Why Do Dogs Get Hiccups? One theory is that hiccups are leftover mechanisms from when we were developing in the uterus. Fetal hiccups have been documented in many species. Some scientists believe that hiccuping in the womb could be a passive test of breathing muscles. Dog hiccups are thought to be caused when a dog swallows too much air. Why Do Puppies Get Hiccups? Puppies are much more prone to hiccups than adult dogs. This is because they tend to ingest more air due to their higher levels of exertion and excitement. Puppies can also start hiccuping when they are tired, cold , or excited. Sometimes the swallowing reflex can interrupt the hiccups. If your dog likes tummy rubs, you can place them on their back and give a loving belly rub to try to stop the hiccups. Do not offer your dog food or water when they are lying on their back, as this can lead to aspiration of unwanted material into the lungs. Do not give your dog large meals or solid meals during violent hiccups, as this can lead to choking and aspiration pneumonia. Offer small amounts of water in frequent sessions. Also, offer small amounts of food and then wait a couple of minutes before offering more food so they swallow less air while eating. You can also try one of the many slow feeder options that are designed to slow down fast eaters. Dog hiccups usually go away on their own. No one knows for sure why dogs, humans, or any animal hiccups, though there are multiple theories. Hiccups have been linked to brain development in babies and may play a role in regulating their breathing. And just like human babies, puppies also experience hiccups much more frequently than adult dogs. Another theory is that hiccups help to remove air from the stomach , especially when newborn mammals suckle milk. Dogs that eat and drink too quickly also tend to be more prone to hiccups, as they swallow air while inhaling their meal. Stress, overexcitement, and vigorous play have also been suggested as causes for hiccups in dogs, possibly due to changes in breathing patterns, leading to an increased amount of air in the stomach. Can dogs get hiccups? Yes, dogs can get hiccups. In fact, they're quite common, and in most cases, nothing to worry about. Dog hiccups are very similar to human hiccups. They occur when the diaphragm the muscle between the abdomen and the chest cavity contracts involuntarily. When your canine companion gets the hiccups, their inhaling breathe is followed by abrupt stops, which might shake their belly and chest, causing them to make a "hic" sound. As a dog ages, the frequency of hiccup bouts usually decreases. Why do dogs get hiccups? Dogs get hiccups when their diaphragm is irritated, causing it to contract then relax in involuntary spasms. The most common cause of dog hiccups is eating or drinking too quickly because it forces them to swallow air along with the food or water. Food intolerance is another possible cause of hiccups in dogs. The stomach is close to the diaphragm, which can potentially cause spasms if their tummy is uncomfortable. Other explanations for why dogs get hiccups include stress, excitement, and energetic play. In some cases, the cause of dog hiccups may be due to an upset stomach or gas. Do puppies get hiccups? Puppies of all ages — from newborns to 6-month-olds — can get hiccups. Hiccups are far more common in small puppies than in grown-up dogs, with almost all puppies exhibiting hiccups at some point during their development. In fact, puppies experience hiccups even before they're born, while they're still in their mother's womb. Fun Fact: This also occurs in humans and other mammals, and although the reason is still unknown, the theory is that hiccups are a result of the body testing the muscles associated with breathing. Why do puppies get hiccups? There are several reasons why puppies get hiccups far more often than older dogs, including: Puppies tend to be more excitable and more energetic than adult dogs. Rapid bursts of energy can easily impact their breathing causing hiccups. Puppies are also more likely to eat or drink too fast. Puppies have weaker organs, and their digestive system is less mature than those of adult dogs. Being too tired or cold can also trigger puppy hiccups. That's why sleeping pups are much more prone to bouts of hiccups than awake ones. How to get rid of dog hiccups If your dog has hiccups, there are several methods you can try to get rid of them. Many of the same cures used by humans also work well for dogs. A sip of water might help, just make sure they drink it slowly. Otherwise, they might gulp down air and end up with another bout of hiccups. You can try to give them something sweet preferably in a liquid form , such as water mixed with a little bit of sugar. The sweetness might help distract them and hopefully relax their breathing pattern. These can coat the throat to soothe the irritation and slow down the breathing process. Just be sure that anything you give your pet doesn't contain Xylitol. This artificial sweetener is used in many human products, but it is toxic to dogs. Light exercise, like a mellow walk, may also do the trick by changing your pet's breathing patterns Keep in mind, the chest contractions can be somewhat violent, so avoid giving your pet foods that require a lot of chewing, as this might present a choking hazard. Prevention is always better than reaction. If your furry friend is prone to hiccups, try to figure out what causes them. If your dog is very eager to gobble up his food or water, consider getting them a slow dog feeder. Another option is to feed your pup several smaller portions throughout the day instead of two large meals. You should also consider the size of their water bowl. There are bowls with different heights or levels that can help the water go down slower and with less air intake. When should you be concerned about your dog's hiccups? Occasional hiccups are a perfectly normal occurrence in dogs and should not be a cause for concern. However, if your pup's hiccups occur very often, if they last for longer than a couple of hours at a time, or they begin to interfere with their daily activities, you should get in touch with your veterinarian. Here are a few potentially serious causes of dog hiccups: Respiratory issues. If hiccups are accompanied by other symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, discharge from the nose, or wheezing, it could be a sign of respiratory issues such as asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia. Heatstroke in dogs can also trigger hiccups. Any dog can experience this life-threatening condition, but brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs and Bulldogs are especially susceptible due to their restricted airways and short muzzles. The list of potentially serious causes of dog hiccups also includes pericarditis inflammation of the heart sac, the pericardium, which causes fluid to accumulate between the layers and hypothermia extreme lowering of the body temperature resulting from exposure to frigid temperatures for too long. Gastric issues. If your dog is experiencing diarrhea, vomiting, and bloody stools on top of prolonged hiccups, it might be an indication of a gastrointestinal GI problem. The same symptoms, along with overall lethargy and exercise intolerance, can be a sign of a parasitic infection. Parasites such as roundworms and hookworms can also attack your pet's respiratory system. If your dog is still a puppy, make sure to have them on a de-worming schedule. They should be de-wormed at two, four, six, eight, and weeks as a puppy, and then every three months. When you take your pup to the vet, the vet will likely start with a physical exam, bloodwork, and urinalysis. Depending on the initial results and the clinical signs your furry friend is showing, an abdominal ultrasound, chest X-rays, CT scan, and an MRI might be recommended in order to determine the underlying cause of the abnormal hiccups. Key Takeaways Dog hiccups occur when the diaphragm involuntarily contracts and might result from eating or drinking too fast, over-excitement, or stress. Puppy hiccups are quite common, and these hiccups typically become less frequent as your pet gets older. Feeding smaller meals and slow-feeding dog bowls can help prevent hiccups in dogs. While it can be cute at first when your little puppy gets hiccups, many new pet parents worry that it could be distressing for them or a sign of something more serious. Fortunately, just like for humans, hiccups are a normal occurrence like sneezing or coughing. Occasional or even frequent bouts of hiccups are nothing to worry about, especially in puppies. Read on as we explain more about doggy hiccups and what the causes in puppies are likely to be. We will also look at some ways that you can help your pup stop their hiccups, though they should stop naturally on their own. What Are Hiccups? Hiccups are a mammal phenomenon, so they are common for humans and dogs. Hiccups occur when the nerve endings connected to the diaphragm get irritated. The diaphragm is the muscle that sits between the lungs and the stomach, and usually, it contracts and relaxes as we breathe in and out so that the air can flow easily. Sometimes, though, our diaphragm can contract repeatedly and involuntarily. This causes the vocal cords to contract as well, which causes that distinctive sound of hiccups. In humans, swallowing air while eating or drinking too quickly is the most common cause of hiccups, but it can also be caused by sudden changes in temperature or stress. Common Causes Of Hiccups In Puppies The causes of hiccups in dogs tend to be the same as the causes of hiccups in people. If your dog eats or drinks too quickly, they can swallow air which can cause hiccups. If they get over-excited and start panting or yapping, this can also cause them to bring air in the wrong way and result in hiccups. Stress and sudden changes in temperature can also affect your dog in the same way as you. Hiccups are more common in puppies than adult dogs because puppies are still learning how to eat properly and they tend to be excitable little balls of energy. This is why it can seem like your puppy gets hiccups on a daily basis. Hiccups can be an early warning sign for asthma, pneumonia, heart problems, heatstroke, foreign body ingestion, nausea, or an upset stomach, but in these cases, they will almost always be accompanied by other symptoms. Of course, if your puppy does display this combination of symptoms, you should speak to your vet immediately. There are many different remedies for curing hiccups in humans, such as holding your breath and swallowing three times or drinking water upside down. Most human methods would be hard to teach to pups, though. Their bodies will regularize themselves naturally when left to their own devices, but there are a few things that you can do to speed up the process. Giving them water to drink is an obvious remedy, but make sure that the water is room temperature rather than cold. Giving them very cold water to drink can actually be one of the causes of hiccups as it can cause sudden changes in their temperature. Adding a small amount of honey or maple syrup to the water to soothe the throat and vocal cords can also help your puppy to feel a bit better sooner. Light exercise can also help get rid of the hiccups, as the light exertion will force them to stabilize their breathing. If your dog likes a nice belly rub, you can also try that. This can relax the diaphragm and stop the involuntary contractions that are causing the hiccups. How To Prevent Puppy Hiccups? If your puppy does get hiccups on a regular basis, there are some things you can consider that might help reduce the frequency. If your dog regularly gets hiccups after eating, the cause is probably that they are eating too fast. If they are gobbling down their food, they are probably also swallowing a lot of air. To help solve this particular problem, you can try a slow feeder bowl. These bowls have you place the food in a small gap that your dog needs to get into in order to eat. Find slow feeder bowls here on Chewy. If they tend to get hiccups at night, consider whether the change in temperature after dark might be affecting them. If temperatures suddenly drop, it can cause a rapid change in their body heat that could cause their hiccups. It may be that you need to set the central heating to come on a bit earlier, let your dog in the house earlier in the evening, or make some changes to their bed to make it a warmer place. Look out for other signs of stress such as pacing, licking their lips or yawning excessively, holding their head below their back, an increase in shedding, or excess panting. Hiccups will not usually be the only sign of stress. But if they happen often, they can alert you to look for other signs. Puppies are much more likely to develop these conditions than adult dogs since they usually occur in puppies before they have been vaccinated. Symptoms: Lethargy, Weight Loss, And Vomiting Lethargy, weight loss, and vomiting are some of the most common symptoms associated with Parvo. Parvo is a very common disease among puppies because it is highly contagious. Your pup can pick it up through direct contact with an infected dog, or indirect contact with something an infected dog has touched. Puppies often pick it up when sniffing, licking, or consuming the feces of an infected dog, but they can also get it if they drink the same water as a contaminated dog or use their play toy. Parvo is most common among puppies between six weeks and six months old while they are still being vaccinated. There is no cure for Parvo, and it can be fatal, but if your dog survives the vomiting, diarrhea, and fever for three to four days, they will probably make a complete recovery. Symptoms: Strong Cough And Runny Nose Sadly, a strong cough and a runny nose might be a symptom of more than just a cold. These are some of the principal symptoms associated with Kennel Cough, another highly contagious disease. It spreads from infected dogs to healthy dogs through airborne droplets. If your dog picks up a mild case of Kennel Cough, they may need a couple of weeks not days of rest. In more serious cases they may need a two-week round of antibiotics and lots of rest to return to their happy and healthy selves. Symptoms: Clear Discharge Around The Nose And Eyes Clear discharge around the nose and purulent eye discharge are some of the first symptoms of distemper, a contagious and fatal doggy disease. Dogs can pick it up through direct or indirect contact with infected dogs. It is particularly common in puppies that have not yet been vaccinated. Distemper is another condition for which there is no treatment. Symptoms: Diarrhea And Weight Loss Diarrhea and weight loss are some of the principal symptoms associated with parasites such as worms. It is more common in puppies than adult dogs as they have not yet learned to leave feces alone. This is why most vets will recommend the use of preventative medication for parasites. You can read more about dogs and parasites here. Symptoms: Lethargy And Accidents If your dog seems lazy and more accident-prone than usual, they may have developed Leptospirosis. This is a bacterial disease that is transmitted through contaminated water and infected urine. It affects the kidneys and liver and can result in serious vomiting and diarrhea. Leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics, but it can take pups up to a month to recover. These especially affect puppies and dogs with floppy ears that cover the ear canal. These leave dark, moist spaces that bacteria love. Regular cleaning can help prevent ear infections, but if they have already developed one you will need to take them to the vet for medication. This could be changes in their digestive routine or just changes in behavior. If they are less energetic than usual or lose interest in something, this can be a sign that something is wrong. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on August 24, Hiccups are a funny sound, except when they're coming from your new puppy. Watching his little body jump with every "hic" may be enough to worry any new pet parent. Here's what you should know about puppy hiccups. Hiccups are a mammal thing: You get them, and so can your puppy. Hiccups are sharp little intakes of breath that are caused by repetitive contractions of the diaphragm muscle , which is located under the lungs. If your diaphragm is irritated by something— like eating or drinking too much—it contracts involuntarily. Each contraction forces the vocal cords to close, creating the characteristic "hic! It works the same way for puppies. What Causes Puppy Hiccups? So what can be irritating your puppy's diaphragm? These uncontrollable contractions may be simply caused by your puppy's excitement. He may have eaten his food too fast. Or consumed water too fast. Puppies are exuberant little beings, and it's hard for them to control their enthusiasm. Or your puppy simply may have gas, and hiccups are the result. Puppies of all ages—from tiny newborns to galloping 4-month-olds—may get hiccups. In fact, dogs of all ages can get hiccups. Just like in humans, finding a remedy for hiccups is difficult. There are a wide range of home remedies for ridding humans of hiccups holding your breath, breathing into a paper bag, or gargling , but none of these remedies is scientifically proven to work in humans, much less in dogs imagine trying to teach a dog to gargle! Ultimately, your puppy's hiccups will go away on their own. Do Hiccups Hurt Your Puppy? They are more surprising than painful. Keep in mind that nothing bad is happening inside your puppy when he is hiccuping. When Are Hiccups a Concern? A bout of hiccups might be a concern to the owner of a new puppy, especially if they are adopting their first puppy. Martin suggests that any time a new puppy owner feels concerned about their puppy's reaction even over something as common as hiccups , that they should reach out to their veterinarian with questions. Was this page helpful? The cure for dog hiccups Dog hiccups are especially common in puppies, and may be a reflex that mammals develop in the womb. Mild dog hiccup cases can be helped by changing your feeding routine or helping them drink water slowly. But if your dog gets hiccups on a regular basis, has hiccups that last for a long time then give your veterinarian a ring. While dog hiccups are probably harmless, they can signify deeper problems and it is worth getting your dog checked out if you are worried. What Are Dog Hiccups? Strangely, human and dog hiccups are one of those medical mysteries that modern science does not fully understand. Scientists have proposed many interesting theories, but have no definite answers. To look at the phenomenon, we need delve into the depths of time and the theory of evolution. Dog Hiccups Through Evolution Hiccups occur in all mammals, and scientists have speculated that they might be leftover from an earlier stage of evolution. Of course, this is only one answer, although it is built upon some scientific evidence. Another theory is that hiccups happen when mammals are in the womb. The fetus is simply trying out its breathing muscles ready to face the outside world when it takes its first breath. Dog hiccups occur when the diaphragm spasms. These spasms are involuntary and cause the glottis — the opening between your vocal cords — to close. The spasms are usually the result of irritation to specific nerves. In people, the most common suspected causes are gastric distention, consuming alcohol, and swallowing irritating substances or hot foods and liquids. Gastric distension occurs when your stomach is full and actually presses on the diaphragm, irritating it and causing it to contract, just like when you breathe in. Dog hiccups of course are unlikely to be caused by consuming alcohol. But many of our canine companions have a tendency to swallow things that might have been better off left on the ground — or table. Regardless of why mammals get the hiccups, we can all agree that having them is sometimes amusing and sometimes very irritating. Hiccups, those annoying little spasms, are just one more thing we share with our dogs. Can Dogs Get Hiccups? Dogs can and often do get hiccups. Dog hiccups are much more common in small puppies, but all ages can get them, usually for the same reasons as humans. As with humans, they are usually perfectly harmless and very cute. That way, you can avoid them in the first place. Dog hiccup causes are as elusive as the causes of hiccups in people, however, puppies seem to experience hiccups more frequently than adult dogs. Scientists have recorded fetal hiccups in many mammalian animals and in human babies. These hiccups typically appear prior to breathing movements, and as the infants grow and develop, the hiccups usually go away. Dog hiccups usually happen because they eat their food too fast, or they eat something that irritates their stomach. On other occasions, there are simply no apparent reasons for puppy hiccups — they just happen. Canine hiccups can be brought on by stress or excitement. Dog hiccup symptoms include this sound and spasm combination, and are occasionally accompanied by a burp. Or, you may just see the spasm and not hear anything. Sometimes, hiccups are not actually hiccups at all. Retching and seizures can sound and appear like hiccups, and are far more serious symptoms. A reverse sneeze can sound like a hiccup, too, especially if it is your first time hearing it. If your dogs does have hiccups, how do you know if they are a sign of something much more serious? Are Dog Hiccups Ever Serious? Dog hiccups generally go away on their own, but occasionally hiccups can be a symptom of a more serious problem. In humans, hiccups that last for a long time can be a symptom of other conditions, and it is exactly the same with dogs. My Dog has Hiccups If your dog has hiccups that last longer than a few hours, contact your veterinarian to rule out other conditions. Dog hiccups that come with other symptoms like fever, lethargy, coughing, or loss of appetite are a medical concern. Call your veterinarian and make an appointment to get your dog checked out right away. If any of these happen, contact a vet as soon as possible. Puppy hiccups generally go away on their own, and if they persist for more than a few hours, you should call your veterinarian. People swear that you can startle a person out of the hiccups, or that eating a spoonful of sugar or dry toast will cure it. While there is no guarantee that any of these strategies will work for your dog, there are a few that you should steer clear of. Feeding your dog a spoonful of sugar or other human foods is problematic and can lead to stomach upset and obesity if you do it on a regular basis. The exception to this, of course, is if you administer human food under the direction of a veterinarian. In humans, giving someone a sudden shock or fright really can put a stop to hiccups. Startling your dog intentionally is not a good idea. It can lead to distrust and behavioral issues, and surprising a dog on a hard or slippery surface can lead to injury. Dog Hiccup Prevention These three useful tips can help: Dog hiccups lessen when they relax. You want to help them breathe more slowly, with a regular and even breathing pattern. Stroke them gently and talk to them in a soothing voice. For humans, sipping water can often help the bout of hiccups subside. Doggy hiccups can start when your dog tries to eat their food too quickly. One of my rescue dogs used to eat her food in no time at all and often succumbed to belching and hiccups. We gave her less food more often, and that soon sorted the problem One other tip is special bowls that contain plastic barriers inside to stop your dog from eating too quickly. These can be a great solution for dogs that gulp down their food like there is no tomorrow. Your vet might be able to recommend special, low grain foods that suppress hiccups. Most of the time, especially for adult dogs, these cures work perfectly and he will soon stop hiccuping. Rest assured, hiccups can occur in dogs and puppies as well. In this post, our Fairfield, NJ vets will explain dog hiccups and if, or when you should be worried. Can Dogs Get Hiccups? Yes, dogs can get hiccups, but they are usually nothing to be alarmed about. Hiccups are caused by an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm the muscle that connects the abdomen to the chest cavity. They are comparable to human hiccups in that they occur when the muscles in the body contract involuntarily — just like breathing. As a dog ages, the frequency of hiccup bouts usually decreases, as well as the severity of the coughing fits. This is why, if you're wondering why your dog gets hiccups a lot, it might be because they are still very young. Can Puppies Get Hiccups? Hiccups are more common in small puppies than in adult dogs, with nearly all puppies experiencing them at some point throughout their growth. Puppies can have hiccups before they are born, while still in their mother's womb. As a fun side note, hiccuping in the womb also happens in humans and other mammals, and while the cause is unknown, the assumption is that it is caused by the body testing the muscles connected with breathing. There are a number of reasons dogs and puppies can get hiccups, including the following: Eating or Drinking too Quickly When your dog eats or drinks too quickly, he or she may swallow more air and begin to hiccup. Aerophagia, or abrupt air intake, causes stomach distention and irritates the muscle diaphragm, forcing it to tighten. You should also avoid giving your dog overly hot or cold foods, as these might irritate their esophagus and perhaps cause hiccups. Spicy Food Capsaicin, a prevalent element in spicy foods containing chile, stimulates neuron activity in the diaphragm, resulting in contractions that cause hiccuping. Spicy foods always cause stomach gas, which may force individuals to drink water too soon. Stress or Overexcitement Stress and excitement can also cause hiccups in dogs, when their heart rate and cortisol levels rise, irritating the diaphragm. Due to tension and excitement, they will also take shorter and shallower breaths. When this happens, they will begin breathing via their chest rather than their lungs. Stomach Gas Dog hiccups might be beneficial in some situations. Hiccups are a means for the body to expel extra gas from the stomach. How to Get Rid of Dog Hiccups There are numerous methods for treating human hiccups, such as holding your breath or pulling on your tongue, but no one knows if they are effective. Hiccups aren't usually that serious, and they generally resolve themselves. It's pointless to try to terrify your dog or pull his tongue to get his hiccups to stop. Scaring or tongue pulling or whatever other treatment you take will most likely irritate him more than the hiccup itself. But if you do want to try, these methods can help: Slow Down Eating: Try feeding your dog smaller portions so they are not eating so fast. If your puppy hiccups often, it could be because they are eating too fast. During mealtimes, space the food out so your dog isn't scarfing it down in one fell swoop. Calm Irregular Breathing: Assist your dog's breathing pattern to become more consistent and rhythmic. Getting him to lie on his back and giving him a good stomach rub usually helps the hiccups go away. Drink Water: Like humans, drinking water can help with hiccups. Just make sure they drink it calmly and slowly. Hiccups are completely natural in dogs and should not be taken too seriously. You should take your dog to the vet if he gets hiccups for more than a few hours, or if they shift to a wheezing sound that causes irregular or difficult breathing. Hiccups that last an hour or more can indicate a variety of health problems. Consult your veterinarian if the hiccup does not cease or fade to avoid further health issues.
