What to do: Chewing on toys helps to some degree; however, this by no means removes all of the plaque. You will want your Pug's vet to perform a yearly dental exam to check for any issues and to do a professional cleaning, if needed. At home, you can do your part by: Brushing your Pug's teeth once per day with a quality toothbrush and an effective paste. Since dogs swallow the paste, be sure to never use human products, and instead opt for a canine brand that has a flavor dogs love like chicken or vanilla. While many go dormant in the winter, all it takes is a day or so without any snow, and they can wake up. Mosquitoes are another often overlooked concern. In the summer, dogs can get quite swarmed, and a few bites can cause irritating itching. It's best to steer clear of chemicals when you can. Many dogs have adverse reactions to pesticides and some even have fatal reactions. If your area does not have a severe tick threat, you may find that an all-natural product works very well. Food and Snacks The food that you choose to give to your Pug for both meals and snacks will have a huge effect on your dog; both short term and long term. So the plastic tray becomes handy then. One of my golden retriever rescues, Riley, was about six months old when he came to me. He started to pull the blanket in, chewing little pieces off. It turned out he liked being in the wire crate without a cover within a few days and settled down quickly to rest. Plastic Kennel Some dogs like the security of a plastic kennel. I have those too and generally just use them for the dogs while traveling in the minivan. When I first purchased a plastic kennel, I waited until the dogs were full-grown. I love them when I take the dogs somewhere, such as to a hotel room. In addition to being ruined, your precious furry companion could get loose and into trouble if he chews his way out. The first day, your pup is just getting used to being with you. If your puppy plays with toys, you can throw a toy into the crate to lure him into it. Leave the door open so he can go in and out.
