Outside playtime is extremely important, though you should keep them in a fenced-in area. These dogs can learn a reliable recall sometimes, depending on the level of their stubbornness. These dogs are typically quite good at agility competitions and enjoy playing a variety of games. They are quite intelligent, which you can use to your advantage while exercising them. Teach them games like hide-and-seek to exercise their body and minds at the same time. They are fast at figuring out what you want them to do. Often, these dogs have some level of stubbornness. The rare American Bulldog Lab may have no stubbornness at all and readily do whatever you ask. But most will at least consider whether they want to follow a command or not. Some may be incredibly stubborn and only respond when something is in it for them like food. Due to their high energy levels, these canines are extremely play-driven. You can usually use toys to play with them instead of treats. The same basic training principles apply. Ask them to do a command, and when they do, throw the ball or play tug for a moment. The playtime acts as the reward. This is a great way to wear them out and do training at the same time. They do shed quite a bit, so occasional brushing may be needed to lessen the amount of fur that ends up all over your home. They may need an occasional bath if they get obviously dirty, but this will only be necessary if they roll around in mud or something similar. As for all dogs, regular teeth brushing is recommended. You should also check their ears for built-up debris regularly, though this is less of a problem for this breed. Their nails will need to be trimmed regularly. However, due to their high activity, they may need them cut less often than some other breeds do. They are less likely to inherit genetic conditions because they are drawing on a larger genetic pool. However, they are still prone to a few conditions, mainly due to their size. These dogs are prone to hip dysplasia, as there is a great deal of weight being put on their hip joints. This can be quite serious for some dogs, while others may have no symptoms at all. Proper feeding during the puppy years is extremely important to prevent this. They may also develop conditions like progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and skin allergies. However, these are rarer than they are in other breeds. Male vs Female While males may be a bit larger, these dogs vary so much that it is hard to notice differences between sexes. It is also hard to predict any differences in temperament and behavior. These dogs may be completely trainable or absolutely stubborn. Because of the temperaments of each parent, this mixed breed may either be easy to train or extremely stubborn. There will be large differences between puppies even in the same litter. Likely, none of the puppies will be quite as stubborn as the American Bulldog. However, none will be as trainable as a Labrador either. Most puppies will be somewhere in between, but extremes on either side of the spectrum are possible. Solid colors are rare in this mix. While the Labrador Retriever mostly has solid colors, this mixed breed often does not. This is largely due to the genes from the American Bulldog, which almost guarantees that the puppy will end up with markings of some sort. Of course, solid colors are possible but this is rare. Their exercise needs will vary. The American Bulldog is an active breed that is known for short bursts of energy. The Labrador Retriever is the exact opposite. They have a great deal of endurance that allows them to go for a long time. The mixed-breed puppies can end up anywhere in the middle. They do best in active families that have plenty of time to exercise and train them. They are typically friendly but do require socialization to get along with strangers and other dogs. For several reasons not necessarily good reasons , white dogs aren't appreciated by the German Shepherd's national breed club nor by German Shepherd breeders who compete at dog shows. Despite their disapproval, a white puppy who pops up in a litter of German Shepherds can still be registered with the American Kennel Club as a German Shepherd. So if you're considering acquiring an AKC-registered German Shepherd who just happens to be white, you can expect a similar temperament and behavior as if he were a more familiar black and tan color. If you're considering acquiring a UKC-registered White Shepherd, you need to find out whether the breeder's goal was to make the temperament of his dogs the same as or different from normal-colored German Shepherds. White Shepherds are often bred to have a softer, more mellow, more sensitive personality. Because of this sweeter temperament, White Shepherds are seldom used as police dogs, guard dogs, or to participate in protection dog sports such as schutzhund. A White Shepherd can certainly be a very good watchdog, but his "watching" is usually limited to alerting you that someone is coming. White Shepherds are not typically aggressive. In fact, if a White Shepherd is going to have any temperament fault, it's more likely to be timidity or skittishness. White Shepherds need a great deal of early socialization to build a confident attitude toward strangers and strange situations. White Shepherds do need plenty of physical and mental exercise. This smart breed should not be relegated to a home that simply wants a casual pet to walk around the block. White Shepherds can be quite vocal, tending to whine, mumble, and grumble. Though they seldom have dominant personalities, White Shepherds still need a confident, consistent owner who will establish and enforce rules. I'm currently working on an article about that breed. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult White Shepherds have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics. If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up. The range of temperaments. You should know what kind of personality you're looking for before you ever start looking for a White Shepherd. Otherwise you might end up with an individual who is very different than what you can handle. You should be especially cautious with this breed because there are a good number of them with inherited temperament problems such as nervousness and timidity. Serious health problems. White Shepherds share a number of health problems with German Shepherds of all colors. Crippling hip and elbow dysplasia, skin diseases, and autoimmune diseases are some examples. Longhaired individuals "appear" to shed less because much of their shed hair gets caught in their long wavy outer coat. Standoffish by nature, White Shepherds need extensive exposure to people so that their natural caution does not become shyness or fearfulness, which are very difficult to live with. They must have physical outlets for their energy, and mental outlets for their intelligent minds. Potential animal aggression. Most White Shepherds are good with other dogs and cats in their own family. But some individuals aren't so tolerant of other dogs of the same sex. Legal liabilities. White Shepherds may be lumped in with other German Shepherds for purposes of "banning" in certain areas, or refusal of homeowner insurance policies. In this day and age, the legal liabilities of owning any breed that looks intimidating and has a history as a guardian dog should be considered. People are quicker to sue if such a dog does anything even remotely questionable. I know the numbers of hours they sleep seem high, but my eight-month-old puppy is constantly sleeping. Does your Frenchie snore a lot? This includes snoring while sleeping. If the snoring becomes abnormal, you should check for an obstruction or see your veterinarian. My Frenchie snores so loud. And the deeper the sleep the louder it gets. How long will it take your new French Bulldog puppy to acclimate to your home? The AKC says it takes a new puppy about three weeks to become settled in their new environment. By three weeks, they understand the lay of the land and who is in their new family. Our puppy seemed comfortable and had picked her favorite my daughter after the first week in our home. But she was still spooked by seeing a random item down the hall or around the corner until about three weeks in. However, it will take closer to three months to learn their new routines and feel completely comfortable. There could be many reasons for your dog crying in the middle of the night. It needs to go potty It may be in physical pain It has separation anxiety A recent move A new pet has entered the home We did have crying outbursts when dex was a pup so we tried the Furhaven and this was an absolute game-changer, so relaxed and comfortable. How long can your dog wait to potty? There is a standard rule of thumb for how often you should let your French bulldog out. They can generally hold it for the same about of hours as months they are old. Your dog may be distressed from being alone. They also get extreme anxiety when first brought to your home and leaving everything they knew behind. How can I help your French Bulldog sleep through the night? Play with them right before bedtime Since your French Bulldog sleeps so much during the day, it may disrupt their sleep at night. Play with your dog for minutes before bedtime to wear them out. It really works! I believe so heavily in kennel training your dogs. It is a place where they feel safe, secure, and have their stuff. If you give them a comfortable bed filled with cotton or memory foam, your Frenchie will be stoked. I went through three beds before we found the one she loves. Now, she prefers her bed over any other place to lay down, even the couch. Let them sleep with you If your Frenchie seems like they are suffering from anxiety, you should let them sleep with you for the night. Your French Bulldogs sometimes just need the comfort of their human being next to them. But as a person who also suffers from anxiety, it breaks my heart when she is going through it. Make sure Your Frenchie is on a schedule Your dog, just like kids, needs a sleeping schedule to help regulate their internal clock. Knowing what time everything is supposed to happen will help their anxiety and depression greatly. Give them a comfort toy French Bulldogs can grow attached to an object, just like their attachment to you.
