Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Location Information for El Paso Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. Height: 11 - 16 inches at the shoulder Weight: 11 - 15 lb. Lifespan: 12 - 14 years Border Terrier Poodle Mix Personality Like all hybrids, you have to look to the parents to get a good read on how they will likely behave. This should be a very friendly dog that is rather small. It will make an interesting mix of energy levels. They should get along well with other animals if exposed and socialized properly as well. They are somewhat capable of independence, or alone time when the house is noisy or full. She responds well to positive reinforcement, like all dogs. She should be rather affectionate and enjoy spending lots of time with you. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. The Border Terrier Poodle mix might be prone to: Addison's, bloat, Cushings, LCP, Hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, skin problems, eye problems Note that these are just common problems in both breeds. This mix will have shorter hair that needs groomed. Both of these dogs have higher grooming requirements with their wiry hair. Be prepared to brush them a few times a week. Either way, get ready to invest in a good vacuum if you want to keep your floors clean! Give them baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out their skin. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him. What are the exercise requirements? Like all dogs they will do better if they get plenty of exercise. This will be a moderate energy dog as the Border Terrier is known as a couch potato and the Poodle has much higher energy. Plan on exercising them daily to keep their energy level down. He might be bouncing off the walls so get ready. A tired dog is a good dog. What are the training requirements? Though intelligent, it might be stubborn and demanding. All dogs respond best to positive reinforcement. So make sure to praise her when she does well. She is an intelligent dog who loves to please, and loves a physical challenge. The more exercise she gets the easier she will be to train. Proper socialization is imperative to all dogs and puppies. Make sure to take her to the park and doggy day care to get her around as many people and dogs as possible. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U. A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible. Overfeeding any dog is not a good idea as that can really exacerbate health problems such as elbow and hip dysplasia. A good diet to look into is Raw Food Diet. A raw food diet will be especially good for the Wolf background. Links to other breeds you might be interested in. Bred by ourselves from our excellent pedigree line KC registered , she has the most fantastic, doting nature. Equally happy curled up on the sofa, on long walks or busy around our farm she truly is a dog for all occasions. Posh stands at 12 inches to the shoulders. Local to us, he is also of a delightful nature. Standing 11 inches tall at the shoulder, he is a real sweetie with a thick curly coat. He has been extensively health tested and certificates can be viewed. He has had the following health checks and passed clear: 1. Degenerative Myelopathy. Von Willebrands Type 1. Familial Nephropathy. He is also heart checked clear. The puppies have just turned three weeks old and are already displaying their own individual characters. They are already showing the docility both their parent possess. We expect all to mellow in to red and grizzle coats. Contact Seller. It is a small-sized Doodle breed. This designer breed is also referred to as a Borderpoo or Border Terrier Poo. Here, farmers and shepherds developed swift and agile terriers to pursue and dispatch the clever sheep thief: the hill fox. He also was named after hunting with Border Foxhounds. In early paintings, you can spot the Border bringing up the rear of the hunting party; his sturdy legs got him there just in time for the action! In addition, as a working Terrier, he has a naturally hard, wiry outer coat and a dense, short undercoat [4] btcoa. The physical and mental qualities of the Border result from generations of breeding and enable the Border to do his job with the least amount of injury to himself and with the greatest efficiency possible [5] borderterriercanada. What makes the Border Terrier different from other terriers? Four main traits set the Border apart: its hide, temperament, length, and legs. It allows him to work his way in and out of narrow openings underground and protects him from scratches and, no doubt, fox bites! Moreover, the breed standard confirms that you should be able to grab a fistful of pelt anywhere along the back. Border Terriers have a strong prey drive. The length of the Border also sets him apart. His long body allows him to maneuver underground through narrow and twisted holes. Prominent ribs, bulky shoulders, or too short of legs are considered handicaps. Moreover, the Border Terrier is friendlier toward other dogs. This is because they were expected to run peacefully with foxhounds. Breeders purposefully made him less dog-aggressive than other Terriers who hunted primarily independently. Lastly, the head is the most visible difference. This was because hunters initially bred Poodles to retrieve waterfowl. Even though Poodles remain excellent hunters, today, they have become popular as companion dogs worldwide. They are brilliant and easy to train, which makes them great pets for people who want a dog that can learn tricks and perform well in obedience competitions. Plus, they are known for being hypoallergenic, which is a huge plus for people who are allergic to dogs but still want to own one. But the biggest reason for their popularity is their unique appearance. Interesting fact: The Poodle cut was meant for function, not fashion! Less hair made the Poodle a more efficient swimmer but more vulnerable to the cold. To find a happy compromise, Poodle owners left puffs of hair on the head, upper torso, and ankles for warmth [7] akc. Appearance The Border Terrier-Poodle mix has a fluffy, round face, otter-like eyes, and a slightly prolonged nose. The body has modest proportions, yet a somewhat longer body and legs.

All of these factors make the English Cream Lab an ideal pet for anyone looking for a loyal and loving companion. English Cream Lab Puppy Health Considerations Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around years — our English Cream Labs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our English Cream Lab puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Allergies are the most common concern, and can be caused by anything from pollen to food ingredients. Hip and elbow dysplasia are both joint problems that can cause pain and mobility issues. Eye problems can range from minor infections to more serious conditions such as glaucoma. Finding an English Cream Lab puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While they may look like they require a lot of grooming, English Cream Labs are actually quite low maintenance when it comes to their coat. A weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove any dead hair and keep their coat looking shiny and healthy. And while they do shed, it is typically not as much as other breeds. When it comes to coat care, the key is to be gentle and avoid using harsh shampoos or chemicals that can strip the natural oils from their coat. With a little care and attention, your English Cream Lab will have a beautiful coat that is the envy of all your friends. In between play and rest, our dogs and puppies have access to five-acre pens where they can safely play until one of our members are ready to take them onto the property. At night, the puppies rest in large heated or cooled kennels with their siblings to prepare for another day of exploration and playtime. We love to take the dogs out bird hunting, and am excited to get them started on waterfowl this year as we are located on the river. I have been around dogs my whole life, but the lab has always been my favorite. I started studying at the UW of Stevens Point for Wildlife Ecology and Captive Wildlife management, and had done some study in veterinarian medicine but complications with pregnancy forced me out. I decided after my first son was born that I wanted to stay at home with my babies anyways both human and canine. So I am now a stay at home mom for all of our babies. Prior to that I had worked at an animal shelter as well as a grooming and boarding facility. I am doing some online studies for genetics and animal behavior, as I am always striving to be very well educated with the dogs. I am an avid hunter and LOVE spending the days outside with the dogs. Please note; We do not breed silvers, charcoals or champagne. We do not breed labradoodles, golden labs or any other designer breed. We do have English lab puppies for sale- We breed Fox red lab puppies, yellow lab puppies, black lab puppies, chocolate lab puppies and white lab puppies. All of our English Lab puppies are vet checked with the vaccines that are needed and also wormed. They also have their dewclaws removed. If in any case a dew claw, or partial dew claw grows back, that will be the buyers responsibility to take care of, if they feel the need to do so. This can be done at the time of spaying or neutering. This is not a common thing. All of our English Lab Puppies are placed with limited registration Pet homes only If you are looking for full registration Breeding rights Do not wait until pickup day to discuss this with us. As my website states, I am not like other breeders in many ways. First, I want to explain how the average Labrador breeder raises their pups the first few weeks of their life. They expect these tiny pups without their senses fully developed to find their way to a nipple without being smothered. I understand that this is what dogs do in the wild, but this is also why many puppies die in the wild. .Then, on top of that they hope that each of the pups will get enough milk on it's own to make it through the 1st week of life. They expect the Lab mom to do all the work, so they don't have to lose a wink of sleep. This is all very sad to say but it's true. I, on the other hand, care about each individual pup's life, I care that each and every one of them survive so that they can live a full and happy life. So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. I am up now about to give my pups their 3 am feeding. Hope this helps you all understand what is put into each litter. She is from our breeding between Cash and Bella, both parents are health certified. Sugar is overnight crate trained and has some other training. She has the sweetest disposition; we absolutely love her! However, we have had a family emergency that has come up that may cause us to have to put Sugar up for sale. If you would be interested in Sugar, please email us and let us know about yourself, and the lifestyle that you would be able to give Sugar. We will be reviewing potential families who would be interested in Sugar and pick the best family for her, and make a decision later this month. They are given constant positive attention their whole time with us. We have a big game room that we call the "Labby Room" This room is designated for our labs and their lab puppies. The puppies get a lot of interaction with all our kids in this room. They also become well adjusted to all the sounds of the home life, like the sound of a vacuum. When the pups are born, I will contact you and inform you on how many pups were born. We will post up pictures of each litter soon after they are born. And try to post weekly picture updates so you can watch the puppies grow. We will also post video on our face book page. When the pups are 6 to 7 weeks of age, I will contact you to set up an appointment for you choose and pick up your pup at 8 weeks of age. If you had first deposit in for a male pup you will have first choice of all the males available. If you have second deposit in, you will have the next appointment to choose from the males that are left and so forth. This order of reserving pups would also apply to the females as well. We honor all reservations on a puppy by not selling the puppy to anyone else. So if you are interested in a litter and don't want to make a reservation until "you see the litter". An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. No appointments will be allowed at a younger age, except for the families that made a prior reservation. We will not allow our baby puppies to be exposed to potential life threatening viruses from people that are just "shopping". We wait until all puppies that have been reserved are safely home, before we show any left-over puppies. Any left-over pups will be at least 10 weeks of age before any viewings are allowed, to insure they have at least had 2 sets of shots in. The only other accommodation that we can offer is a zoom call, so you can see the pups before you make a reservation. Most of our sweet puppies are sold before they are even born. Reserve your puppy today! If you are looking for that special new labrador puppy addition to your family, we have a perfect blocky Lab Puppy for you. If you want to adopt or if you can foster, walk dogs at the shelter, attend an adoption event on a Saturday or Sunday with an adoptable dog, or help us get the word out about these dogs in need, please contact us. We will route the application to the appropriate place, even if you are interested in a shelter dog. The application will help us get to know and the kind of home you will provide. Then we'll give you a call and talk by phone. We are very flexible about many aspects of the application -- but there are a few things that we expect from adopters. We review adoption applications carefully, evaluating the unique circumstances of each prospective adopter. We'll talk to your vet reference to understand the kind of care you provide to your animals. We'll talk with you, and we'll visit your home. We'll try to get to know all that you would offer a dog before making a decision on your application. Not all applications are approved, but applicants offering great homes often find the approval process very easy and supportive. We do not place dogs in homes where they will be exclusively "outside" dogs. We want them to be part of your family. German Shepherd Dogs were bred to be with their human-shepherds and families, and they need human companionship. They bond very deeply with their people. They tend to develop behavior problems when left alone outside. Frankly, we think the Louisiana heat and humidity is too much for this heavy-coated breed in the summer too. You wouldn't want to sit outside in South Louisiana in August wearing a heavy fur coat, and neither do they. We ask that you commit to keeping the dog on heartworm preventative. In Louisiana, dogs who are not on heartworm preventative will get heartworm disease and may die from it. It's easy to prevent. We ask for a commitment to completion of a basic obedience training course with a trainer of the adopter's choice. We're happy to offer trainer recommendations, if needed. We have found attending and completing a good obedience class has a profound effect on the quality of the bond between rescued dogs and new owners. It forms a solid foundation for a great life-long relationship. If you aren't sure whether you are ready to adopt, please consider fostering a German Shepherd Dog. Then add all of this and you've found a wonderful friend: Tony is well behaved in the house, he's fun to be around, he can be left alone and trusted while youre gone, he's affectionate, sweet, smart, adorable, and obedient. Tony is the BEST! And those eyes--they're like a tiger! It's like a little cloud of heaven even though he is a short-haired dog. He is so cuddly that it is almost therapeutic to be around this sweet guy. This big boy loves to give kisses and I think he would simply smother you with love if he could. Extremely affectionate, this boy is definitely a people-oriented dog, though he loves to be around other dogs too. He is an extremely happy dog, always excited to see and greet you! This big boy is super calm inside, and when he is outside LOVES to swim if there is a pool or a pond around! He is definitely a water puppy! This big guy also does a good job of sleeping by your bed, waiting patiently until morning. And he is not a "barky" dog. About this baby's History: He was found in a subdivision, abandoned, in Texas. Everyone that met him loved him and he was taken in by a number of families while they searched for his owners, until finally he was taken on by the EKC Rescue. Tony has spent the last month in foster care, ensuring he has a clean bill of health, and learning as much as we can about him so we can place him in the perfect home! About this baby's ideal home: This fella is great with other dogs. He does well with both smaller and larger breeds. But when introducing him to new dogs at home, its important to do the process slowly as he has given some warning growls to some dogs before. He is strongly expected to do well with cats but he has never officially been around one. It is a possibility that he will jump on smaller children, so plan to put in some training if you have young ones. BUT I believe he will do very well with children invading his space as they can often do like pulling or tugging on him. Tony can get a little excited whenever voices are raised or whenever he sees his humans, so he would ideally have a calm mom or dad that can be patient and guide him in the right direction until he calms down. Because of this angel's size, he would do perfect with a family that wouldn't mind have a big beautiful boy running around.Though he has only ever jumped up on someone once, he may need some more guidance in that area. He really is so sweet, calm, quiet whenever he is inside that you forget he's not a little dog! Tony is neutered, up to date on shots, free of all intestinal parasites, and currently taking preventive heartworm and flea and tick. He is ready to go! This is the point between their shoulder blades. They are likely to continue to increase in size and weight until they are around years of age. Unlike other pure breeds, there are some quite considerable variations within the German Shepherd family. This can have an impact on their color, pattern, and body style, as well as their size and rate of maturation. The most significant distinction of German Shepherd size is between those that were bred for showing as opposed to working. With the former, there was a focus on the look and gait of the dog over its personality and general health. In some countries, including the States, these dogs have exaggerated rear angulation, which can lead to hip problems — not ideal for a working breed. Photo by elisabetta ventura on Unsplash Of the two, the working dogs tend to be larger with bigger bones, heads, and an all-round more athletic build. Although again, there are variations between these depending on the country they were bred in and the tasks they were required to do. Sex also plays a crucial role in size. Female dogs will be at the lower end of the scale of the dimensions given in the above chart 22 — 24 inches , while males will be closer to the upper limits 24 — 26 inches. German Shepherd Size Charts and Growth Patterns Like most other dogs, German Shepherds have their most significant growth period in the first 6 months of their lives, achieving more than two-thirds of their adult height by this time. As is common to larger breeds, their growth will significantly slow after that. They will reach their adult height a little before their adult weight. Our interactive puppy growth chart and calculator has more information on that. Check out these guides on best dog food for puppies here. Your German Shepherd will have acquired much of their adult size and weight by the time they have hit their first year. However, they will continue to grow, usually reaching their full adult size somewhere between 18 months to 2 years of age. The age of maturity, though, is somewhat dependent on the specific type of German Shepherd that you have. Eastern European varieties, for instance, are particularly late bloomers and are unlikely to reach their full size much before the age of three. Larger dogs will also naturally take longer to achieve their full size. A female German Shepherd might be expected to get there at 24 months, whereas for a male, it could be closer to .At this age, they are reaching the end of their rapid growth period, and you will notice their growth slows down significantly after this milestone. With German Shepherd size, there is quite a bit of variation depending on the type you have and what they were initially bred for. All this information can help you to anticipate their adult size, and our calculator can get you the rest of the way there. Like many large breeds, a German Shepherd dog is not considered fully grown until they are about 18 months old. Female German Shepherds continue to fill out until they are around two years old, while the male German Shepherd growth rate continues until they reach two and a half years of age. Males are larger and require more time to fill out their chest and abdomen. As you can see by the German Shepherd weight chart, these dogs can continue to grow until they are three years old, but the majority of growth occurs within 24 months. Toy Breeds Chihuahuas will generally not exceed 6 lbs. Puppy Breed Size The speed at which your puppy will reach his adult weight depends on his overall size. In general, toy and small breeds will mature more quickly than large and giant breeds. Toy breeds might reach their adult size at as young as 8 months, while the largest of the giant breeds will continue growing until they are 2 years old. Small, medium, and large breeds will fall in line along that spectrum. Using a puppy growth chart like these from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute can help you determine whether your pup is at the right weight for his breed and size. Keep in mind, however, that these weight charts are good as a rule of thumb but that there will be some individual variance. Your vet can help you decide whether your puppy is underweight, overweight, or just right. Check Their Ribcage As he becomes an adult, you can use the method where you feel his ribs. For most dogs, you should be able to easily feel his ribs without pressing inward; you should not see his ribs. Some breeds tend to be leaner or heavier, however, so again, this is something your veterinarian should help you determine. Double Their Weight at 4 Months If you want to guess at how much your puppy will weigh as an adult, you can double what he weighs or weighed at 4 months of age. Still, it will give you a good ballpark estimate if you are curious. As with everything else pertaining to your puppy, keep in mind that he is an individual. One of the things we found interesting in building our puppy weight calculator was researching the breeds that people most frequently search for when it comes to puppy weight gain. Let us estimate how large your German Shepherd will be as an adult by inputting their age and weight into the calculator below. German Shepherds are considered a medium-to-large-sized breed. This means they often fall around the line that separates medium-sized dogs from large-sized dogs. The AKC wants males stand at inches and weigh pounds, making them considerably larger than females in some cases. Females stand at inches and weigh around pounds. As you can see, this is a huge range. There is a significant difference between a pound dog and an pound dog. Therefore, how big your particular dog might get depends largely on their genetics. You can often get somewhat of an idea by looking at both of their parents. Typically, if the parents are smaller, their puppies will be as well and visa versa. What does a 4-month German Shepherd weigh? Usually, 4-month-old German Shepherds weigh about pounds if they are males and pounds if they are females. Once they are born, genetics tend to take over. At 4-months-old, the puppies have been growing according to genetics for long enough for you to guess what their adult size might be. A dog that is small at this age is likely to remain small. They are simply focusing on growing larger at this point. They should have all their puppy teeth and decent motor skills. How big is a 6-month-old German Shepherd? Puppies undergo massive growth spurts before five months. By the time they reach six months, their growth has slowed down considerably. The average male will weigh about 53 pounds, while females weigh 46 pounds. They have not reached their full adult weight yet, but they are very close. Because their growth has slowed down so much, though, they will continue to grow for a long time to come. This is normal. It is also normal if your dog retains their somewhat skinny appearance for a few more months to come. When is a German Shepherd fully grown? Female German Shepherds often stop growing at around two years. Males may continue to grow for another six months or so. The exact time that each dog stops growing depends on genetics and their diet. This can make them grow too fast, which can mess up their joints and cause other health problems. In fact, hip dysplasia is much more likely in dogs that were improperly fed as puppies. Instead, we recommend patience. Dogs may not grow evenly. Many may reach their full height before gaining much of their muscle mass and fat. Dogs are a lot like children in this way. They grow at their own pace. While these dogs reach sexual maturity before they are fully grown, it is generally not recommended to breed them until they have reached their full size. Otherwise, it can stunt their growth and potentially cause health problems for the mother and the puppies. Do German Shepherds Grow Fast? Generally, German Shepherds grow rather fast in their first six months of life. They will double their weight many times in this period and undergo many growth spurts. However, after five to six months, it will begin to slow down substantially. While they will almost reach their full size at about six months, it will take them until they are about two to finally gain those last few dozen pounds. Why is my German Shepherd so small? German Shepherds all grow in a unique fashion, similarly to people. For this reason, a German Shepherd may not seem to be growing much at all, only to hit a growth spurt. Your dog may seem small compared to other German Shepherds while still being in the normal range. This increases their risk for many health problems, including hip dysplasia. The dog needs to grow at their natural rate. A dog can simply be smaller than normal but completely healthy. Some German Shepherds have been crossed with other kinds of shepherd — these dogs are likely to not grow at the same rate as their pure-bred peers, too. Do not make the mistake and keep your German Shepherd outside most of the time. These dogs get highly attached to their humans and want to spend time with them! If your dog lives outside and is experiencing stunted growth, he may be refusing food due to loneliness. Make sure to take him to a vet — and in addition, let him spend time inside with you! Unleash the real potential of your companion! We will email you daily with training tips, ideas and videos. This is an introductory course into our training philosophy. You will get customized video lessons based on your training goals — and you can implement them in just 5 minutes a day.
Some Final Words It is possible but it is also a rare event. This physical feature can cause complications for the mother. The usual method for Pugs to give birth is through a C-section. This method is determined by having an ultra-sound or an x-ray done prior to the birth of those puppies. This is the preferred method if you want the mother and her puppies to survive the birth experience. The cost of a C-section varies between vet clinics and animal hospitals. However, there are risks involved with a C-section. The anesthesia can have a negative effect on those puppies. Then, they may get cut during the incision. This accidental cut can cause the puppies to bleed to death if not caught in time. Finally, if the tools used are not sterile, then your Pug and her babies may get an infection and die. What Do Pugs Eat? Click here to find out. The Pug dog breed is not that much different from other dog breeds. Their pregnancies last the standard 53 to 63 days depending on certain factors. The size and health of the mother are two of those factors which may alter the timetable somewhat. The birth process comes in 3 stages. The first stage is when the mother loses her appetite, be restless, and may vomit. This is all being done at the time the uterus begins to contract. This stage lasts about 12 to 24 hours. The second stage is the actual birthing of the puppies. The mother will have her babies between 30 and minute intervals giving everyone time to clean the pup and get it moving. The final stage is when the placenta shows up. This happens generally when the last puppy is born. There are some difficulties that may arise if you have your Pug give birth at home. If you are not ready for these difficulties, then it is advisable that you let the vet handle the birthing process for you. Can Pugs Eat Banana? The ages of both the male and the females are a bit different. The female should go through about 3 heat cycles before they get pregnant. This gives your mother-to-be a chance to fully develop physically and get ready for the rigors of puppy birth. This puts the female at about the age of 18 months. On the other, the male reaches sexual maturity at about 12 to 15 months. That is when you should start to use your male dog as a breeder. After your female has had her first litter, let her wait one season before breeding her again. This gives her a chance to recover from the previous litter. If your female is 6 years old or older, then it is time to stop her from having more puppies. The males do not face these restrictions. Some Final Words While a Pug can have up to 9 puppies at a time, it is best to wish for a lower number of puppies. That way your female stands a better chance of surviving the pregnancy and bringing you more litters as the years pass. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. The only time a pug can get pregnant is during her heat. Your female pug will come into heat about twice a year, or roughly once every six months. Her heat period will last about three to four weeks. She will undergo physical changes and her behavior may change some during heat. Male dogs will also be more drawn to her during this time. The best way to know for sure if your pug is in heat is to look at her genital area. During her heat, she will have a swollen vulva and release a bloody discharge. Your female pug cannot get pregnant during the whole heat cycle. She can only get pregnant when she is ovulating. This time tends to be approximately day 11 through 14 of her heat cycle. The range of ovulation can vary depending on the dog. This will give you the best chance for her to fall pregnant because you will know exactly when she needs to breed. The vet may swab her vulva and analyze the cells under a microscope slide to tell exactly what stage of heat she is in and if it's a good time to mate her. You can also get an ovulation blood test, which analyzes the levels of hormones in her bloodstream and detect when she is ovulating based on the rise in hormones. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. During the entire heat cycle, your female pug will be attractive to all male dogs. When she is outside, make sure you keep a close eye on her to ensure that another male dog does not come and mate with her without you knowing about it. This is especially important if you let your dog free in a fenced in yard. Male dogs are known to jump fences to get to females in heat. Once you determine when your female pug is ovulating, have the male pug brought it. When you introduce them, make sure you keep them on a lead. Once they meet, they should take to one another. The female will not allow the male pug near her until she is ready to breed, but if you have timed it right, this will not be a problem. Never forcibly restrain the female pug to get her to submit to the male pug. If the timing is right, she will be a willing participant. You will be able to tell if the breeding was successful around 28 days after the pugs mated. You can do this through a blood test that will show the change in her hormones. Your vet can also perform an ultrasound scan a week earlier to check to see if she is pregnant. You will also notice a physical change to your pug if she is pregnant, with a slightly protruding belly and nipples on her stomach seeming larger than normal around week two or three after mating. By four weeks after mating, her belly will be obvious. Take care not to overfeed your pug in the first half of pregnancy. Weight gain at this time can cause problems with giving birth. Instead, stick with regular amounts of her normal food. Once halfway through the pregnancy, switch to a puppy food and feed her little and often, because her stomach will be compressed by the growing puppies. Also make sure she has plenty of time to rest, since she will be more tired than normal. However, you should still walk her every day, though at a slower pace than before. This should only change if your vet put on exercise restrictions. Pugs are pregnant for an average of 63 days, but anywhere from 60 to 65 days is normal. When the puppies are born, you need to watch them carefully during their first few weeks. They need be clean, warm, continually fed, and gain weight at a healthy rate. Around four weeks, give them a larger area to go around it because they will be more active. Once the dogs are twelve weeks old, you can send them to their new homes. Shih Tzu: 3 How can you tell if your pug is pregnant? The signs to tell if your brachycephalic dogs are pregnant are simple. It may not be universal, yet there are great similarities among all dog breeds. The important part, you know how to tell if your female pugs are pregnant or not. Here are the signs: Appetite Changes One of the obvious signs that your pug is pregnant is when its eating behavior changes. Typically, your pug tends to eat more when they are pregnant. Weight gain is one evident sign that your female pug is soon to become a mother of six puppies. This also leads to less physical activity since they feel heavier, so they would prefer to lie down. This can also be due to weight gain. But if you see other signs telling your pug is pregnant, then that swollen abdomen is the puppies. They also have an increased appetite when they are pregnant, giving them additional fat in their belly. Because of that, pugs love to just lie down. They have lesser movements when they are pregnant. Behavioral Change Your pug is usually stubborn and independent, right? But these brachycephalic breeds tend to shift their moods when they are pregnant. A pregnant pug commonly becomes affectionate to its owner. They want more care and comfort from you. They do not want to feel alone since they know they will need your help during the birthing process. If you notice this kind of behavioral change in your female pug, you can guess it can be pregnant. Enlargement and Discoloration of Dog Nipples Once your female pug is pregnant, you will also notice its nipples being larger. Pregnant pugs tend to have enlarged and darker red nipples due to hormonal change. There is the production of milk already happening during this phase. Lower Physical Activity You will also see that your pregnant pug tends to walk or jump less than before. The reduced activity is also necessary to prevent any deformities of the unborn pug puppies. Still, you need to encourage your pug to do short walks to exercise their hip bones. This is also good to enhance their stamina in preparation for giving birth. Similar to humans, you need to have a healthy heart and lungs before giving birth. Nesting Trait You may also see that your pug is digging on their bedding, right? Pugs tend to gather soft fabrics and materials that will serve as a nest for her newborn pug puppies soon. Your pug can either make a nest in her whelping box or bedding. This is totally normal for a dog pregnancies since they want a soft cushion for their puppies. You can also prepare this spot for your pregnant pug. Is it safe for a pug giving birth naturally? When your pug is pregnant, you need to visit your vet to know if it can do a natural birth. Besides that, pugs have narrower hip bones, making it more painful for them to give birth. This puts a lot of stress on your poor dog. But your vet can prescribe prenatal vitamins to sustain dog pregnancy and help them do natural birth delivery. It is expensive but most breeders choose this to protect the welfare of female dogs and puppies. Also, to help your pregnant pug recover, they cannot bear puppies twice or more annually. What do you need to know about Dog C-section Process? Cesarean process for dog birthing is your last solution when there is a birthing problem. For pugs, this is most ideal to preserve the health of the mother dog and her puppies. C-section is frequently done for this toy breed since it has a small birth canal. If the unborn have a large head and shoulder, there will be problems with whelping. Doing this surgery is unexpected most times. Doing x-rays or ultrasound is recommended for you to determine if your dog needs to undergo C-section. For this procedure, a cut will be made from the belly button of your dog down to its pubis area. The cut is estimated to be just enough for one pup to come out. Always go for a vet clinic with intensive experience in doing animal caesarean process. By doing this method, your pregnant pug and her litter have a higher survival rate. There is also less suffering from pain for your dog. How much is dog caesarean? The price varies on your location and the vet hospital doing it. Recovery Rate The female pug has a higher survival rate than normal birth. There are times that your vet will prescribe medicines to help alleviate the pain and infection. Dangers of C-section There are two dangers to having caesarean for your dogs. One is for the effects of anesthesia on the pups. The second is for the possible hemorrhage during the operation. The recovery rate of the mother dog is at 99 percent, yet lower for the puppies. There is a huge risk for intense bleeding to happen for your puppies if they get cut during the C-section. This puts them at a 70 to 90 percent survival rate. Aside from that, there is also a risk for uterus infection if the tools used are not properly disinfected. Still, this medical procedure is most suitable for pugs with troubles in natural birth. What you need to know about Pug Birthing Process and Delivery Just like human giving birth to a child, there are different phases for a dog giving birth. There are three phases in general, and we are going to briefly discuss them below. Stage One During this stage, your pug experiences discomfort. This is due to uterus contraction, and it causes them to vomit and breathe heavily. The muscle contraction gives a painful sensation to your pregnant dog. This stage usually lasts for 12 to 24 hours. This stage tells you that your pug is ready to give birth. During this time, you may notice that she is restless. Your pug tends to eat a lot before labor. She will also start licking her genital. If you stop her from eating, she might dig on your couch or on her bedding. It will be lower than .Stage Two This is the main birthing process of your pug. The average period for a pug giving birth is 24 hours. There is thirty minutes to an hour gap between each pup coming out from the birth canal. This gives enough time for the mom to wipe clean her newborn puppies. Stage Three This is the last process when your pug gives birth to her new puppies. The placenta will also come out during this stage. What happens to your pregnant pug every week until giving birth? Pug breeding is not as easy as you think. But if you know the essentials and you are passionate, it will be easier. But you can always observe them having a change in appetite and vomiting. Your pug may feel a little sluggish since there will be weight gain. Week 3 You will observe that your pug is becoming lazier than ever. As an owner, if you truly know your pug, you can tell the difference. Below are some additional signs you can observe on the third week. Stomach becomes larger Nipples turn darker red and swollen Your pug will frequently clean herself more than the usual Week 4 During the fourth week, all signs of dog pregnancies will be noticeable. Her nesting trait will be more evident than ever. Better prepare her whelping box, or she will dig on her own bedding. Week This is the last part of her gestation before she starts her labor. Be sure to prepare the necessary medical supplies you will need if she will be giving natural birth at home. If your pug cannot do the natural birth process, send her to your nearest vet clinic. A veterinarian needs to do a caesarean section procedure to save the mother and the puppies. What are some pug pregnancy issues you need to know Besides knowing how many puppies can a pug have, you also need to know the possible health concerns. Here are some common health issues you need to know in advance. Uterine inertia is also called stalled labor. Genital infections after giving birth. Pugs are brachycephalic breeds, so the head and shoulders of the newborn are larger than their pelvic. This leads to difficulty in doing natural birth, a condition known as Dystocia. When your pregnant pug experience this, better go for a C-section process. This is expensive but it will be safer for your Fido and puppies. Your pet will also have extreme blood sugar level variation. You need to watch out for their sugar level to avoid obesity and complications. When no puppy comes out fifteen minutes after labor starts. You can stretch that to three hours of labor. If nothing comes out after three hours, better rush them to your nearest vet clinic. A distressed unborn puppy. It can mean the pup inside lacks oxygen. Newborn pups are not breathing. Uncut umbilical cord an hour after labor. You need to cut them a few minutes after the pup comes out. Use a disinfected surgical scissor for that. Sac is still wrapping the newly born pup. Some new mother dogs do not have the instinct yet to remove the sac, so you need to them yourself. Use surgical gloves upon doing it. Excessive bleeding during whelping is dangerous, so you need to call your vet right away. This could mean some major arteries are cut. Stuck puppies with big heads and shoulders. How can you help pug pregnancy? Have you thought about how you can help your pregnant dog? For a pregnant pug, you will know if the labor starts when there is a sudden drop in temperature. That will be from 38 to 37 degrees Celsius. That means labor will start in the next 12 to 24 hours. Prepare medical supplies, heating pads, towels, and blankets for the natural birthing process. Secure the number of your nearest reliable veterinarian for emergency reasons. Call the vet if your pug is suffering from labor pain but there are no puppies coming out Make sure the sac covering each puppy will be removed by the mother pug once the pup is out. This must be done to ensure those newly born young pugs can breathe. You can use a sterilized surgical scissor for cutting it. Cut it an inch above the belly button of the puppy. Tie that off with dental floss and wipe that with a cotton ball dipped in antiseptic. After all puppies have come out, you can discard the placenta. Otherwise, the mother pug will just eat them. The whelping box will be where you will place the young puppies. It must be filled with a clean towel or blanket. You need to place those newborn pups inside the whelping box. Use the heating pad to provide warmth to the puppies. What do you need to prepare for your pug giving birth at home? Once you see that your pug is starting the whelping process, you must stay beside them. Here are some of the things you can do for your Fido: You can move her puppies to a nearby whelping box. Here are some of them: Thermometer. For the little one, the world is a scary place, and it will heavily depend on its mother for food, shelter, and security. For the first 2 weeks, a baby Pug will alternate between sleeping and eating cycles. At 4 weeks, a pup is usually able to walk, hear, and see everything, and starts actively exploring its surroundings. From 4 to 12 weeks a pup is in a socialization stage where it learns the power of playtime. It starts to actively engage in an interaction with siblings and its pet parents. They are expected to gain full control of their bladders and bowel movements, therefore should be encouraged to relieve themselves outside. Pug pups should begin learning the basic commands during this stage as well as receive their first vaccines. That means chewing on anything it seems fit yep, including your favorite pair of slippers. It is your responsibility as a pet parent to make sure that all the dangerous objects are moved away to a secure spot cables, wires, equipment, etc. Adolescence: Between 6 and 9 months your Pug baby is in its adolescence stage. Here it develops complete sexual maturity and reaches its full height. If you happened to have a female Pug, she will be ready to have babies at about 9 months of age. Therefore, if you are planning to breed your Pug dam, it is best to at least wait until that time or even older, up to 2 years and bring her in for a check-up to see if everything is normal. A vet visit should include parasites screening, and getting her up to date on the shots. It is also recommended to do all the necessary X-rays to see if her reproductive organs are ready for pregnancy. How many puppies do Pugs have? We will cover it shortly. Senior stage : a Pug is considered a senior citizen by the time it reached 9 years of age. You will notice how much slower it starts moving, may gradually lose interest in certain activities, and, unfortunately, develop some health problems the two-legged are also experiencing during their golden years. Since Pugs are considered brachycephalic , that means problems with the oxygen supply may occur. This fact, in turn, leads to lung, heart, and even brain problems. It is extremely important to bring your Pug oldie for regular vet checkups at least twice a year to ensure that there are no major problems in place Pugs are prone to developing cancer. So, when a female Pug is ready for breeding, it might be best to find out how her pregnancy develops, and any facts you as a breeder have to know to avoid complications during her labor stage. Female Pug Pregnancy Cycle When a Pug dam gets pregnant, her body goes through a dramatic change just like a two-legged female would. The average canine female pregnancy is much shorter than that of a human, ranges anywhere from 57 to 65 days. How do you know if your Pug pup is expecting? It is no surprise since she has to not only provide nutrients for herself now but for her future litter as well. Do not decrease her portion even if you are afraid she will gain a lot. It will be possible for her to shed it off once she has gone through labor. Once it is out of her system after whelping, her weight will decrease greatly right there. New Behavior Patterns: since her body goes through hormonal changes, you will notice that a future Pug mom will become tired quicker, even after a very short potty walk. She would nap a lot more during the day. Also, you might observe that she might become extra affectionate would want to cuddle with you more. Nipples become dark red in color as well as bigger in size to prepare the Pug dam for the future lactation period. On average, a female Pug will have about puppies per pregnancy. The veterinary specialist will only be able to tell you approximate numbers. And on the contrary: if a mother is a crossbreed with another species Jack Russel Terrier, Beagle, or a Chihuahua, for instance , then you can expect a bigger litter size, up to 9 pups! Any future expectancies can be more complicated because they create some health problems for canine mothers. With each pregnancy, it takes a lot of time for the Pug mom to regain her strength and stamina back. Curl-Up A Pug pregnancy can be a very exciting, but a little challenging time as well. A Pug pet parent is responsible for making sure that a future Pug mom has the support and all the help it needs to deliver a healthy litter. It is best not to mate a female Pug before the age of 2 to avoid future health complications. It is truly incredible to participate in the puppy birth process, I wish you good luck! Family Dog Expert Author Hi there! My passion for dogs drives me to share my knowledge and expertise, helping families build strong, loving bonds with their four-legged friends. Welcome to Sirdoggie A blog crafted with love for all dog lovers and their families! Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Pug photo, ca .Note its small head and long legs. A pug by Carl Reichert. The pug that was predominantly featured in the commercials was Cheeka. A few other adverts also appeared in the following months, inspired by the idea of a dog following a boy. Yorkshire Terrier: 3 puppies How many puppies can a Pug have in their first litter? For example, Pugs younger than 7 years old can have smaller litters, and in most cases, the first ever litter will tend to be on average smaller than most. Can Pugs have their puppies naturally? Because of their history as a breed, Pugs tend to suffer from a variety of health issues that could make bearing and delivering puppies naturally a bit of an issue. One of these factors is their hips, which can be narrow and prone to dysplasia, making natural births painful, dangerous and even potentially fatal if complications were to occur. Because of this, smaller dogs such as Pugs will often undergo caesarean sections, especially if they have had multiple litters. Breeders usually choose caesarean sections for their breeding dogs for the safety and wellbeing of both the mother and the litter, although this can prove costly. If you are concerned about your dog giving birth naturally, speak to your vet who will be able to recommend the best course of action for your dog. But what about the lead up to the delivery? Well, here are some more details that you should also need to know when asking how many puppies Pugs can have. Handy Hint: Before you think about buying a Pug, please read my guide on what to look for plus the questions you need to ask a breeder. Signs that your Pug is pregnant The signs of pregnancy in dogs, while not necessarily universal, are usually very similar from breed to breed. Unexpected labour can catch owners off guard, with no whelping box or supplies prepared for the new arrivals. Knowing and recognising the signs that your Pug is expecting sooner rather than later is very important to the health and wellbeing of your dog, her puppies and also your general household. Here are some signs: Loss or change of appetite: A dog losing its appetite is a common sign that something is wrong, but an additional surprising symptom may also be a sudden increase in appetite. The appetite of your dog is particular to them, so if you notice any sudden change in the amount that they are eating then it could be a sign that something is up with them. Acting out: Because of the changing hormones in their body from the pregnancy, you may notice that your dog is acting differently than normal. For instance, a usually independent or standoffish dog may be more affectionate or needy, or a typically amiable and affectionate dog may become snappy or want to be left alone. This is because of increased blood flow to the beasts, which may also lead to lactation leaking of milk later on into the pregnancy. Enlarged abdomen: The most typical and classic symptom of pregnancy, although this can often be mistaken as overeating or your dog gaining weight. If your dog had suddenly gained weight it may be best to keep an eye out for other changes in behaviour and a quick visit to the vet to check whether that additional belly fat is actually fat. Nesting behaviour: Towards the end of the pregnancy you may notice that your dog has made herself a nest, either in the whelping box, her dog bed or another secluded area of the house. Loss of energy: While a pregnant dog may be as active as normal during the early stages of pregnancy, you may begin to notice her becoming less and less willing to jump around, go on long walks or play around the house. This is definitely for the best as increased activity could potentially damage the puppies, but walking should be encouraged up until the final days of pregnancy to keep your dog healthy and exercised. How long are Pugs pregnant for? Like most dogs, Pugs are typically pregnant for between 53 to 63 days on average, although this can vary depending on the size of the Pug and her general health. However, it is important that you keep an eye on your Pug once she starts heading into the final week of the pregnancy for signs of imminent labour, including nesting behaviour. Puppies are usually fully formed at around day 58, meaning that labour can happen at any time. Labour in dogs occurs in three separate stages: Stage one: The uterus begins to contract, but there will be no outward sign of this. The mother will be restless, may lose her appetite as well as vomiting and panting. This lasts between 12 and 24 hours. Stage two: Lasting up to 24 hours, this is when the puppies will begin to be born. Typically, dogs give birth to a puppy between half an hour and an hour at a time, giving you and your dog enough time to clean the puppy, ensure its healthy and stimulate it to wake up and start moving. Stage three: Usually occurs around the same time as stage two, this is when the placenta appears. The placenta itself will be delivered shortly after the end of stage two, when all of the puppies have been born. How do you help your Pug give birth? Once this has occurred, labour will begin within the next 12 to 24 hours. If you have decided for a caesarean section or a vet hospital birth, this is when you should take your Pug to the veterinary surgery. However, if you have decided to help your dog give birth at home then you need to make sure that you have a whelping box prepared, as well as clean towels, heating pads, blankets and emergency medical supplies recommended by your vet such as gloves, sterile scissors and antiseptic solutions. If your Pug is showing signs of labour, including a greyish sack dropping from the vuvla, but no puppy emerges within the next hour then it is recommended that you call your vet who will be able to advise you. Also, if your Pug is showing contractions for more than two hours without any puppies being born, call your vet immediately. When a puppy is born it will be covered in a thin layer of membrane that needs to be broken open and removed so that they can start breathing. Your dog will most likely do this herself through instinct, licking the puppy to stimulate its breathing. However, if your dog is too tired to do this then you may need to do it yourself. Break open the membrane before rubbing the puppy vigorously with a towel to trigger its breathing. Again, if the puppy is not showing signs of breathing when doing this please get on the phone to your vet immediately. The puppy will also be still attached to the umbilical cord. Normally your dog will chew through this herself, but if not then you will have to do so yourself with a pair of sterilised scissors. Cut or rather crush to reduce bleeding the cord around an inch above the belly of the puppy and tie off the end with dental floss and dip the end in an antiseptic solution. After each Pug puppy emerges the placenta will also be discarded, around fifteen minutes after the birth. This can be immediately discarded, although your dog may try and eat it. Once a Pug puppy is born and is breathing, place them in either the whelping box or in a lined laundry basket along with blankets and a heating pad. Once all the puppies have been born and you are sure that the labour is over, take your dog outside to urinate especially if the labour has taken several hours before returning to the whelping box and allowing her to start nursing her pups. Again, your vet will be able to offer advise over the phone if you are concerned about any of the puppies. Conclusion Pugs make for amazing pets, however due to their popularity increasing there as been a surge in unscrupulous breeders who use irresponsible practices. It can lead to a lot of health problems for the Pugs. If you are thinking about buying a Pug and have seen the puppies in the litter with the mother, please also do additional research before you go ahead. I will be publishing a guide soon on what to ask the breeder… You might also like…. Some Facts and Trivia About Pugs Pugs were kept as lapdogs by Chinese emperors, who provided them with all the comforts of royal life. These spoiled dogs occasionally received their very own little palaces and guards! Their pushed-in noses are a familiar feature, but that also means they are brachycephalic. Although adorable, these compressed features often cause respiratory difficulties. Pugs may breathe noisily while rushing about because of their facial anatomy, which makes it difficult for them to breathe deeply and for lengthy periods of time. Contrary to what many people think, pugs are not related to bulldogs. About the only thing they have in common is that they are both wrinkled. It turns out that the Pekingese and pugs have the closest relations. A Pug will have on average 5 puppies in a litter, and the range is usually between 3 and 6 puppies. On very rare occasions, a Pug can give birth to up to 10 puppies in a litter, like this dam in Liverpool, England. The size of the litter can be influenced by the breeding lines; some lines tend to have larger litters than others. Pug owners who are considering breeding their dogs should talk to a veterinarian or breeder about the size of the anticipated litter. Many other variables, which I go into more detail about in the sections below, will also affect how many puppies there are in a litter. At birth, a pug puppy weighs around 2. The breed standard for Pugs is between 14 and 18 pounds 6. All dogs, including Pugs, do not go through menopause and are able to reproduce right up until the moment of their passing. Their heat cycle typically lasts between 5 and 8 months or around twice a year. However, just because they are capable of doing so does not imply that they should mate twice a year. Your Pug will experience a lot of stress from overbreeding, which can result in a range of health issues like heart disease, arthritis, and infertility. Also, stopping early is necessary in order for it to be spayed and to enjoy a happy life even after retirement. Add to the fact that there are nations where it is illegal to breed a dog more than four to six times in its lifespan, and you should understand the importance of not overbreeding. In the US, the American Kennel Club AKC does not accept registrations for dams that are bred over the age of 12 and under 8 months, and sires that are over the age of 12 and under 7 months. Age of the dam Typically, as the dam ages, the size of the litter decreases. Oddly enough, the first 2 litters are often smaller than the following ones, so once your Pug breeds again after the first two litters, you should likely see your dam having one or two extra puppies. If at all possible, have your dog spayed long before then to improve its overall health. Occasionally, breeders have to rely on artificial insemination to aid in breeding older males, which is why it is better to only breed when they are younger. Health of the mom Only when the mother is healthy may a puppy be born healthy too. Not only that, nutrition also has a significant impact on the number of puppies in a litter. A high-quality, protein-rich diet should be consumed all year long in order to increase the likelihood of having a larger litter. Dams with unhealthy diets, especially those who are overweight, tend to have smaller litters. Size of dog Bigger body sizes in terms of build, not weight are often associated with larger litter sizes within a particular breed. Being a small breed, the Pug is not physically capable to have a big litter of puppies as compared to for example a Doberman. Generally speaking, Pugs with larger frames may have slightly larger litter sizes, though this would only be a minor factor given how little difference there is between their sizes. Litter in which mom was born The level of fertility of your Pug has a thing or two to do with the litter it was born in. If she was born into a large litter herself, she will likely have a larger first litter. On the other side, you may generally anticipate that your girl will have a small first litter if she was born in a small litter herself. Type of breeding Actually, it might be better to save this topic for a later article given how easily it could become complicated. But for now, just be aware that the method of reproduction can significantly affect both the number and caliber of puppies. The health of the puppies will be impacted not only by reduced litter sizes but also by shorter lifespans and a greater likelihood of genetic diseases. These problems are more likely to develop as the ties between the dogs get stronger. Linebreeding , on the other hand, aims to maintain sufficient genetic diversity while preserving the best genes from a bloodline, making it frequently a safer method of dog breeding. Time of breeding It is said that a dam is more likely to have a larger litter size the closer she is to ovulation. This is defined as the period after the estrogen period when the Luteinizing hormone triggers ovulation. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any studies supporting this theory, so at this point, I would say this factor is probably not that significant. Although Pugs can begin reproducing once they reach their first heat cycle, it is not a good idea at all and must be avoided. Wait until your dog is at least in her second or third heat cycle to give her enough time to develop sexually and gain weight and size. Most ethical and responsible breeders will wait till a Pug is at least 2 years old before breeding them as they would have completed all the necessary medical checks by then. Most female Pugs go through their first heat cycle between the ages of 6 and 9 months. A useful rule of thumb is that it will go into heat at about the same age that its mother did. Numerous symptoms, including bloody discharge, receptivity to male dogs, restless behavior, and others, can indicate that a dog is in heat.

A Labrador Retriever was bred to be a gentleman's hunting dog, a family companion and a breed that can adapt to any situation with ease. They are NOT and never where meant to be a speed machine or a bouncy, over-energized four legged meat dog. Lord knows there are many other breeds out there bred specifically for those reasons. The Labrador should NOT be one of them. True to the correct Labrador temperament, you will find that our dogs are low-key inside the home but when it comes to performing a certain task they are trained for, they turn on like a light-switch. Dogs help children to be more physically fit. All dogs, regardless of breed, need to be walked. Children who take their dogs for regularly scheduled walks tend to exercise more than those who have no reason to get up off the couch and leave the TV. The Journal of Physical Activity and Health concluded that people who walk their dogs generally walk about an hour longer per day than non-dog walkers. In this age where over one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, exercise is no longer merely a choice of leisure activity, it is a necessity Center for Disease Control and Prevention, .What more pleasurable way for a child to exercise than to run and play with an adored dog? Our ambition is to breed British Labradors to meet two goals: to be excellent in the field and pleasant in the house. To ensure we are staying at the top of the game we are sending several of our dogs every year back to the UK to compete in Field Trials against the best of the best. Competing under real hunting condition is the only way to make sure our bloodlines continue to carry on the right traits. So far we are the only kennel in the US which produces dogs in the US who compete in the professional field at the highest level in England and Europe. Their outstanding abilities to cover a variety of tasks comes through a careful selection in the breed to choose the one with the WILL to Please. The willingness to work for you and be closer to humans than many other breeds makes the Labrador Retriever the most popular dog. In our kennel, we stick with this tradition along with meticulously selected hunting abilities which are based on being eager to work, drive and style, and the will to please. With Stefanie Latham former breeder of Ragweed's bloodline , the breeder behind the kennel, we have a knowledge of 30 years of breeding, training, and trialing successful Labradors all over Europe including the UK.
How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Now watch me eat! I figured maybe it could help show the real difference a good food can make! After all this IS a practical factor when deciding from whom and when to purchase a puppy. We have decided that our prices for our quality raised and genetically tested, pure bred pups will be: As of 6. The older a puppy becomes the higher the price becomes since they will will have much more training when they are taken from our home to yours. Puppies are handled daily from the moment of birth until the day they leave our family to join yours. Puppies are exposed to cats, horses, goats, chickens, cows at times and our other dogs daily and learn to get along with everyone. The Springer Clan home is an activity hub. Lots of noises, voices, movements, and crazy quads, lawn mowers, diesel engines, leaf blowers daily for dust on my porch , grooming vacuums and clippers, screaming children, and motorcycles constantly all around your new puppy. This exposes them to many sounds so that they are confident around loud situations. If you have ever been to our home, there is a smile on your face. Health: By the third day all puppies have their first examination, tails are docked and dew claws removed by my vet. We allow puppies to nurse as long as the mother remains healthy. This gives every puppy the best start in life. Every litter is protected from communicable diseases by allowing no one outside our family or those with deposits near them until one week after their first series of shots. All puppies are given a series of shots at 6 and 8 weeks of age. Every puppy is wormed before going home with their new family. Every puppy full price will be micro-chipped at 8 weeks of age Grooming: Since Poodles will be groomed their entire life, we begin at birth by getting them accustomed to being handled. At four weeks old puppies are introduced to the process of grooming by having their face and feet trimmed, and will be trimmed weekly thereafter. Training: We have children in our family and friends who regularly visit, and therefore all puppies are taught early on that jumping on and nipping at people is unacceptable behavior. At birth we begin neuro stimulation which increases brain activity and is proven to create the building blocks of smarter and more confident pups. By 4 weeks old we begin playing Puppy games during feeding time which teaches pups self control, patience, observance, and respect for human boundaries. Whining and unnecessary barking telling humans what to do is nipped in the bud quickly. We crate three puppies per large crate overnight. This allows them to feel comfortable with litter mates at their side and soon learn that crates are not a punishment but a haven. Sometimes it is just too hot for this and skip it! If rarely there are any pups remaining with me past 8 weeks old, we begin to crate them individually and work on leash — price goes up NOT DOWN, for this training…something to think about. We choose to have a limited amount of litters each year, sometimes the litters fall in the first or second half of any given year, all Future Planned Litters will be posted on that page. We do not include these as part of our Breeding Program, yet will include these and any dogs that are born to our family in our Warranty Program and will be raised in the exact same fashion as our very own dogs. We rarely will sell to breeders but it is not out of the question. If you wish to begin a working relationship with SCSP, contact us and let us know your plans. Their elegant shape covered in a beautiful curly or corded coat gives them their distinct and famous look. It is this widely adored appearance, plus their intelligence, has earned this breed the status of the official dog of France. The Poodle is thought to have originated from Germany as a breed of water retriever. However, some argue that it is a descendant of the French Barbet dog. What we do know is that this is an old breed, with a history stretching back to the 15th century at least. Disposition Poodles are famous for being one of the most intelligent breeds, making them incredibly responsive and trainable. Meaning, they are very sweet, lively and cheerful puppies who like to be with people. If they are socialized properly, a Poodle will both charm your friends and also make a wonderful watchdog. It is important to give them the proper amount of exercise they need because, without it, they can become stressed and timid. The Poodle is great with children, making them an excellent family dog. Poodles are active, intelligent and proud dogs. They love to spend time with their family and are eager to play and please. They are remarkably agile and smart, which makes them wonderful to train. They enjoy learning and puzzles, so keep your Poodle stimulated to avoid them being bored or anxious. This breed is very people-oriented, which makes them both loyal and kind. They will respond to training routines that are fun and positive, just keep it consistent. Exercise Poodle puppies of any size are very active and require a good amount of exercise every day to suit their high energy level. They will thrive when they are kept busy and get to act on those inherent impulses such as retrieving, hunting, swimming, and learning. Poodles love to go for walks and jogs. Some even learn to do it themselves with clippers, while others take their dog to a professional dog groomer about every six weeks to have their hair and nails trimmed. Training As with most dogs, the Poodle will do best when they receive early socialization and leadership.
