Thanks to the Poodle side of their DNA, Bernedoodles can come in so many beautiful colors and patterns! We have spent significant time learning the ins and outs of coat and color genetics. Below is a general guide to what different colors look like that we produce. Not every litter we have will have every one of these colors. We always know the color possibilities with each parent pairing based on their genetic panels and list them for the planned litter. Producing merle puppies is something we do very carefully and with a full understanding of coat genetics. Red We love our red Bernedoodles! They can range anywhere from a light strawberry blonde, to a deep red color. Phantom Very similar to tri colored, just less white and more brown! Phantoms can have large abstract white markings on their chest and feet, or no white at all. This change happens because when they are born most of their little hairs have dark tips on them even the hairs that are not truly dark all the way to the base. Then as their coat grows out, and especially after getting their first haircut, all those tips are trimmed off revealing their true color. Chocolates can come in all the same color patterns as their black counterparts listed above. Each pup is uniquely marked! Parti can happen to any of the above colors, and is a coat trait we can test for in the parents. So we always know if there is a chance of parti puppies in a litter. Now that we produce primarily multigens, we do not often have parti puppies. What is a Sable Bernedoodle? So, what is a sable Bernedoodle? A sable Bernedoodie has a coat consisting of black-tipped hairs with roots of any solid color. No particular pattern or location is required for these colors. As a result, it can be difficult to recognize a sable puppy without the help of a breeder. Sable puppies may appear to be solid black or look similar to a phantom Bernedoodle as newborns. If you choose a sable Bernedoodle puppy, remember that their coat will almost certainly lighten and possibly fade to an almost solid color as they become an adult. Sable Bernedoodle Color Options Remember, sable is more of a combination than a color itself. The tips of the hair must be black, but the roots of the hair can be any other color. Sable Bernedoodles have distinct bands of pigment on each individual hair. These hairs will always have black at the tip, but a different shade at the root. Sable Bernedoodles vary in appearance depending on the generation you choose and the traits they inherit from each parent. First generation puppies f1 tend to be more varied than later generations, such as f2 and multigen Bernedoodles. On the whole, you can expect a large dog. Standard Bernedoodle height ranges from 15 to 27 inches tall, though will usually be towards the larger end of this range. As adults, Bernedoodles can weigh as little as 40 lbs, but some can weigh well over lbs. Females tend to be smaller than males. Like their other traits, coat type can vary. Some may have thick, double layered fur with only a slight wave. Others may have coarse, curly fur. Sable coloring is interesting up close, as you will be able to see two distinct colors on each hair. So, as they grow, these Bernedoodles may look more solid in color. Are Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic? Bernese Mountain Dogs are very heavy shedders. Poodles are described as no shedding, since their curls catch any loose hairs. Despite popular opinion, studies have shown that there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. Even dog breeds described as hypoallergenic can trigger allergies. This is because dog allergens are found in dander, saliva, and sweat, rather than fur. Studies have also found different allergen levels in dogs of the same breed. So, someone with allergies may respond differently to two different Bernedoodles. The tight curls in Poodle coats are great at catching saliva-coated hairs and dander when they shed. But, Bernese Mountain Dogs have straight fur, which lets those hairs and dander drop over your house. So, people with allergies may respond better to curly-haired Bernedoodles. But, this coat type require much more grooming, which involves getting up close to the sources of those allergens. Sable Bernedoodle Grooming and Coat Care Bernedoodle grooming needs will differ depending on the coat type they inherit. Bernese Mountain Dogs have a dense, double layered coat, with straight hair. Poodles have a single layer of tight curls or corded fur. So, Bernedoodles can be anywhere between these two extremes. Curly fur is more likely to tangle and form knots. Going to a groomer once a month, or even once a week, will not be enough. You will need to brush them at home too. If you neglect brushing duties, their coat can become matted. This will be painful for your dog, and can require their entire coat to be shaved off. But, brushing them regularly will help to control sheddings hairs. Bernese Mountain Dogs are heavy shedders. So, f1 Bernedoodles that take after them are likely to be the same. But, it also meant that puppy mills, pet stores, and backyard breeders are all the more likely. But, bear in mind that first generation puppies tend to be more unpredictable than later generation mixes. Early in July I mentioned a litter of puppies I was fostering for my local shelter, and mentioned one pup I was particularly worried about finding a home for. She was a particularly aloof, un-social pup, and I was worried that no one would want to adopt her. I was concerned, but I had to stop there. Fostering again But the three boy pups sat and sat in the shelter. But there were no takers on the three small, lean, leggy pups. I stopped by the shelter a few times when I had a spare hour, to bring them into the get acquainted room, let them play with toys, and remind them that if they sit politely, they get treats. One day, in mid-August, I stopped by the shelter with my dog-loving grandson to see the pups and found one of them with a bleeding cut on his hind leg, and a big swelling on his other hind leg that looked like he had a big round liquid-filled superball on his hock. He also had a pretty deep cut on his chest. What a mess! Separated from his brothers, we could see that he was limping on the leg with the weird round swelling, and his patella on that leg seemed to be somewhat luxated the vet tech palpated it and it popped right back into place — hmmm. She cleaned his cuts, stapled the cut on his hind leg, and put a needle in the swelling to see what sort of liquid came out. She measured out some antibiotics and some Metacam an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medicine , and as you might have guessed , I brought the pup home with me for some rest and relief from getting beat up in the shelter pen with his brothers. My grandson was overjoyed to get to spend time with Junior. He decided that Boone was his favorite dog to follow around and play and sleep with — which was great, because it gave me and my now-oldest dog Woody some time to spend together without Boone being jealous. Then they started to shrink, but a few days later, one of his elbows developed a big swelling. And a day later, his other elbow swelled, too. The hocks started to shrink once Junior was sleeping on a thick bed in my home not on the concrete floor of the shelter anymore , but then his elbows filled with fluid. I brought him back to the shelter several times over the next two weeks for the vet tech and then the vet to see these developments, and eventually he was diagnosed with elbow hygroma — a condition that can affect more than just elbows. For reasons that are poorly understood, some dogs develop swelling over the point of bones that come into contact with hard ground. Articles about the condition always suggest that it will likely go away as long as dogs have nice thick beds to sleep on. Spending all day on the concrete floor of the shelter certainly must have caused the problem with his hocks — but it was a lot of playing with my young dog Boone in my office that was likely causing the problem with his elbows. I pulled out every spare carpet, rug, quilt, and blanket in my house and covered my office floor with them. I also stopped the dogs from playing in the house at all — I have only one rug in one room in the house, and they always seemed to initiate play on the hard tile floor of the kitchen. I shooed them out to the lawn whenever they started wrestling. And, over a series of weeks, the swellings all subsided. Then I got word that the second boy pup got adopted — yay! Update about the girl pup Then I got a message on Facebook from someone who said they adopted the autistic-seeming girl pup, and wanted to know if we could talk. It seems the puppy had been returned by the family, and adopted again almost immediately by the woman who contacted me. When she saw that the pup had been adopted by a family with kids, she surmised that the environment was likely too busy or loud for the pup — and then she saw my comment offering help and she reached out to me. I called the adopter, and we talked for a long time. She indicated that the pup is still very reserved with humans, much more comfortable with dogs she owns one older dog , but that she will approach and sit for treats brag: this is a hallmark of time with me. I am so relieved and grateful that this pup found the right home after all! It was time to start advertising for a home for him. I took some cute pictures of him and asked my friends to share his information on social media. I also encouraged the two young dogs to play outside, rather than indoors on my hard kitchen floor. Within a week, we had a bite: A super nice family from a nearby town wanted to come meet him. He would be able to go to work with her each day! What a lucky puppy! They came to my house to meet him, and I told them all about the issues we had been through. He was impressive, and they were impressed! I allowed them to bring Junior home to their house to spend the rest of the weekend with them, and I was thrilled to hear at the end of the weekend that they wanted to adopt him. I told the family I would be happy to hold him for a few more days so I could bring him to a local vet for an appointment to get the vaccines and to bring in a stool sample. By a miracle, I was able to score an appointment with a local vet almost immediately. I asked the vet what she thought about adopting such an animal. I wrote a long email to the family explaining what the vet had said, and including some links to articles about the condition. And I told the family that I would not blame them one bit if they decided that Junior had more problems than they wanted to take on. I was on pins and needles waiting to hear what they would decide — and also trying to figure out how on earth I was going to be able to find another home for him! My friend Leonora, who previously owned a dog with special needs, bravely declared that she would adopt him if the family would not, which made me cry, I was so touched. Great news for Junior Junior is such a happy, sweet, smart dog. But fortunately, the family is awesome. The dad told me that the whole family talked about it, discussed how they would have to be careful with Junior and that he might have health problems from time to time — and decided that they wanted him anyway. I am so grateful that such big-hearted people are willing to give this sweet pup a tremendous opportunity for a happy, healthy life with them…. I am friends on Facebook with the owner of the other long-haired pup, and have seen photos of her more or less weekly since her adoption. Her color has lightened and gotten much more red, and she looks super similar to her long-haired sister! When they were pups, I would have sworn they were sired by different dogs, but now — except for the bobbed tail — they absolutely look like full siblings. Genetics are so strange! This is absolutely not a knock on purebred dogs, but it occurred to me today, as I was kissing all these unique faces, that it might be boring when the pups all look very similar!

This Puppy Chow Chex Mix is seriously one of those easy, practically fail proof recipes. I was first introduced to this confection at the lunch table in 7th grade. I was sitting there eating my random, most likely unhealthy lunch, with my hip, yet awkward pubescent friends. When we noticed someone eating this random food. We, being the curious filter free group we were, asked what they were eating. Their response. Puppy Chow. This then entailed a few gross looks, gasps of horror and many random thoughts flying through our brains. She quickly assured us it was a treat, not actually dog food and was called Puppy Chow. Her mom we all believed was a rock star after trying it. It was good. Not to mention, her rock star mom also let her bring it to school in her lunch. Seriously cool mom points right there. She loves the surprise and generally eats it first, leaving little time for anything of actual substance. However next time I make it, I want to freeze some individual sized portions that I can toss in my kids lunches or use as an after dinner dessert. That way it can last longer than just a few days!
