About sixteen years ago I saw my first 'Doodle' and was overwhelmed by him - I had never heard of Labradoodles before, and like everyone else, wasn't entirely sure whether I was having my leg pulled or not!! However, I was assured that Labradoodles were for real and I was also told a little about their history and why they were originally bred. I was fascinated and then spent many hours, days, months and yes years, researching into this wonderful, and relatively new breed. I had grown up with labradors and poodles and felt sure that a mating between the two to produce a labradoodle would be an excellent cross. Both dogs carry wonderful traits, and are such perfect family pets - put the two together and I felt certain you would end up with something very special indeed. Of course I wanted one! My hopes right from the start, if all went well, were to ultimately aim to breed a small number of top quality labradoodles, with particular care taken on their type, conformation, health testing and particularly their temperaments. Our first Labradoodle and the start of Didlington Doodles! When we went to see the pups at 6 weeks, out of all the pups it was Stroodle who came bounding up to us on arrival - she had already been picked out for us by Fiona as one of the best bitches, so it was extraordinary how she knew we were to be her 'people'! At the same time I also set out to find a very special labrador bitch puppy with the view, again if all went well, for her to start our own line of Didlington Doodles when the time was right. I found Pindy, a beautiful black puppy from a top class field trials strain, and again there was no question which pup from the litter was coming to us! The other extraordinary thing is that both pups were born on the same day - so there was a link between them right form the start. Both pups arrived shortly after the New Year in and our house has never been quite the same since!! Now a number of years later I can honestly say that my initial instincts about labradoodles were absolutely right. They are the most fabulous, fun, bouncy, crazy, loving and loyal dogs I have ever come across. They also have a highly developed sense of humour and are very intelligent. They are always up to some wicked trick - you can almost see their thought patterns as they try to think of something to make you laugh! A labradoodle is not for the faint hearted, they love lots of attention, walks and fun. They also love everybody and every thing - even our cats nearly get flattened with licks and kisses when they come home - although of course the cats do have the upper hand in the animal hierarchy! I don't think there is an ounce of malice in Stroodle, as I said she loves everybody and all other dogs too - but they can be over exuberant so do need to be properly trained. Being such sociable dogs they would not be happy left for hours on their own. I would therefore not advise anyone who was out at work all day to have a labradoodle and indeed we would not let one of our pups got an 'out at work all-day family'! We aim to breed about four litters a year, and are receiving emails and phone calls daily, either through word of mouth or via internet search engines. Walking the dog will be an everyday necessity for the next years. So, be realistic about how much time you have available. Before sharing it with another living being, you should make sure there is enough space. You all want to be able to live together comfortably. Thirdly, whilst your kids will grow, it might be easier if they are very young baby-toddlers to have a small dog. The dog won't tower over them, and it might be easier for you to look after both. That being said, maybe a more pressing issue would be the size of your vehicle. It might even be the deciding factor. Another factor is health. That includes DNA testing for hereditary diseases. The larger the dog, the increased risk of structural health problems. In particular, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and patellas knees. So, before adopting a puppy, please make sure these checks are done. They significantly reduce the risk of your dog developing avoidable health conditions. A small factor to consider as well is gender. Male dogs are generally slightly larger and stockier than females. Regardless, boys and girls are likely to vary in adult size once fully grown. The points mentioned are areas to think about before bringing any animal into your home. Whilst we emphasised the concerns for larger dogs, all sizes of Labradoodles make fantastic pets. We wanted to highlight these points to make sure that you know how each size differs in terms of requirements. If it is, great! They can be a wonderful addition to your family! Amanda Ho a year ago We absolutely love our dog, she is a very sweet and smart being, but with that said, know that the dogs you buy from San Francisco Golden Retrievers might come with some very serious health problems. When you pay this price for a dog, you expect it to at least have a normal healthy life. I know I bought dogs that costed much less in the past and never had the health problems our dog has. Within just a few days of having her, she was barely eating, and soon after, she started having bloody diarrhea and almost died. Note that the food we gave her then is still the same food we give her now, which is a very high quality food for Golden Retrievers. She already came from them with that problem. Her stomach is so sensitive that anything can cause her diarrhea. She was walking very weird, even her trainer noticed that. We decided to measure her legs just to find out that she has a disability. One of her legs is 1 inch longer than the rest already. So, if you are considering buying a dog with them just because they have it available and they are super cute, consider it again. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere you can trust. Our Loki is very adorable and loving also adjusting really well with the environment. We really appreciate your help. From the moment he starting communicating with us he was incredibly responsive and flexible. We went to meet the pups and it was clear how well cared for they were. My boyfriend and I had been planning on getting a golden for some time, and one morning we woke up and decided it was the day. We found Thom online via these great reviews you've probably also read, and felt confident that he was a great and well-educated breeder. We got in contact with Thom almost immediately and made a plan to go meet Mosa that day. Thom warned us that he had family business that day and that his cousin would let us in and introduce us to Mosa. Well, the second we met Mosa, it was over.I was already in love. She was so goofy and excited to see us, not afraid at all! We registered with the AKC right there and Thom ensured us that as soon as he was home he would send us her vaccination records. I'm now aware that it is not abnormal for breeders to vaccinate their puppies, however her vaccination record was not considered acceptable by our apartment complex or our vet. Additionally, our vet explained to us that her vaccines were given too early and too close together, making them entirely useless. Therefore she had to be double vaccinated, which can potentially cause a number of physical and behavioral concerns. Thom quickly offered to pay for these vaccines, which although appreciated, only confirmed our skepticism in Thom and the unofficial nature of all that had occurred. Why would he so eagerly offer to pay for something that he claimed he did himself? Unfortunately, the issues did not stop here. We also found out that Mosa had three variants of worms and a parasite when she came home. Our vet said that although worms are common in puppies, he had never seen anything like this before. Small issues continued over the months to follow, like getting photos of her parents. Sadly, by the time we got these photos we no longer new whether or not we could actually trust what Thom was saying. I do want to add that Mosa is the absolute best dog. However, I wish I could have believed that when Thom told us. I admit we should have not given into impulse to buy the first golden puppy available. So, my best unsolicited advice, never rush into buying a puppy. Do thorough research on your potential breeder to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into! I contacted Thom to see it they had any mature 2 to 4 yr old dogs and he said they had two. The Google and Yelp reviews were good so we were scheduled a visit his Sacramento site on Saturday but he called on Friday and said he would bring the dog to our home. Which he did. After taking the pooch in, we then requested shot records, AKC registration and rabies certificate. What we received was an email copy of a shot record which he claimed he administered. No vet records, no AKC registration, no rabies certificate. We took the dog to our vet only to find out she has a Whipworm infection. I could not have been more impressed by Thom and the job he is doing raising therapy dogs for families so that they can experience the same kind of loving companionship that he and his family have experienced with their therapy dogs. From the minute I entered his clean, organized garage that smelled like cleaning fluid, I knew this man ran the kind of operation that spoke to me. The back yard area with the dogs was immaculate. The puppies were happy, calm, clearly well-cared for and well on their way to potty training on their wood chips. He was not pushy, answered all of my questions, graciously sent us home with a crate, collar, leash, and toy, and even let me purchase food from him at a discount so that we had what we needed to get started. Here are a few that we have found that are great and long lasting! Red or black Kong - not the pink or blue that says it's for puppies - they can chew them up in no time. We put peanut butter in the Kong and give it to them in their crates; they love it! Nylabones - These are great when they are really teething, and even our older dogs like to chew on them. We have found the Dinosaur one to be a favorite for both Puppies and Adults! The Just for puppies ring bone dog teething chew toy is also a puppy favorite Chuckit - for playing ball. These are awesome! If you get a medium size, any tennis ball will fit! Just don't let your puppy have the tennis ball to chew on, it will wear down their teeth. Go Dog has fun soft toys, we aways get the ones with the chew guard! Brush The Soft Slicker brush by Safari is great for puppies, as they get older and their coat gets longer the Chris Christianson slicker brush works great! Here is my must-have list for your goldendoodle puppy! We kept Clifton in here at night and when we would leave the house. This one fits perfectly with the crate. We used these to create a safe little area for Clifton once we stopped crate training him to be in. This clips right into the seat belt and on to any harness. This spray helps prevent your dog from chewing on things like your furniture, shoes, etc. You will be using this spray every time there is an accident in the house those first few weeks. We still use this spray 5 years later. Harness : We recently purchased this harness , and we LOVE this one and would recommend this to anyone with a pup as this harness is a little trickier to wiggle out of. Clifton has a medium he weighs about 30 pounds. Collar : We have a bunch of different collars that we switch between, but I love this cognac leather collar for every day. Safari Dematting Comb : You are going to need a de-matting comb to helpwith matting especially as your puppy gets older. It is the best thing we have bought, and we use it all the time. Start doing this when they are little. We love this little set that includes the toothpaste, brush and finger brush. Towel : We keep two of these pet towels in the bathroom where we give Clifton a bath. They are great at absorbing the water after a bath. We also pack these when we take him to the dog beach or Florida. Mushers Secret Paw Wax : If your pup lives in a cold climate, this is perfect for their dry, cracked paws that will come in winter. Shopping for toys was one of my favorite parts when I first started shopping for Clifton. My advice is not to buy too many toys at first like I did. Your puppy is going to destroy those cute, stuffed animals quickly. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. This will be a place for them to sleep and relax. Make sure that this bed is big enough for your Goldendoodle to sleep on. As a puppy, your Goldendoodle may chew on their bed and blankets. Make sure to get a bed that is made of out tough material but is soft enough for them to want to sleep on. As your Goldendoodle gets older , you may want to transition them to an orthopedic dog bed. These beds would not be a bad choice for a puppy either. Most dogs love the plush sides to rest their head. This bed is waterproof, which is great for those puppies learning to potty train. This bed is very comfy and is made of memory foam, which is a plus for older Goldendoodles. Check Price Food and Water Bowls As soon as you get your Goldendoodle home, they will need to have food and water available. There are many different size and shape food bowls that you can get for your Goldendoodle puppy. There are even pet water fountains to keep your Goldendoodle entertained while drinking water. This is a very personal preference. When looking for a food and water bowl, also look at your new puppies eating style. Many people will let their Goldendoodle eat out of Tupperware for a few days until they know if they have a dog that is constantly moving the bowl around the house or one that eats very fast. If your dog is moving the bowl around the house, consider a bowl with a rubber bottom to help it stay in place more. Stainless steel bowls are great for cleaning but may be strange for your puppy to eat out of. If your pup is eating their food very fast, consider a puzzle bowl. This bowl is designed for them to have to eat around different parts until they finish their meal. If your dog eats very fast, they are prone to vomiting shortly after eating or even Bloat.
