English Bulldog Protection It is imperative that you follow the right guidelines in the care of your dog to ensure that it lives a long, happy healthy life. Activity To prevent your Bulldog from gaining too much weight which can be problematic to its bone structure, ensure that it gets about fifteen minutes of exercise a day. Due to their inactive nature, they get tired easily and after those fifteen minutes, they will be ready to take a nap. Do not engage them in too much exercise though. How to measure your dog for crate size A lot of the crate size guides that you will see show recommendations based on the weight of a dog. However, when selecting the proper crate for your dog, the size matters more that the weight. The best way to measure this dog is with a simple tape measure. The two measurements that are important are height and length of your dog. How to measure the height of your dog Have your dog sit on the floor and face upward. This could be the forehead, nose or ears, depending on the dog. To be even more confident that your measurement is right, you can also measure your dog standing. Measure from the top of the head or ears if higher to the ground, just like you did when sitting. Take whichever of the two measurements is higher. When you have this height, add three to six inches to make sure that you are leaving enough room for your dog to be comfortable. How to measure the length of your dog Measuring length of your dog for a crate is both a measurement and a calculation. Measure your pet from the tip of the note to the base of the tail do not include the tail, regardless of type of dog. This is the height when the dog is standing from the floor to the elbow joint many people think of it as an armpit. Add the first measurement full length to one half of the second measurement arm length and that will give you your length. The reason for this is that when the pet is laying down, it can stick its arms or paws out beyond the standing length of its body. Crating Philosophy When considering the natural habitation of a canine, often its home is a den, cave, or similar close-quartered shelter. They used this space as their home, to sleep, escape from danger, and raise their young. Obviously, your bulldog would not appreciate roughing it out in the wild. However, they still find comfort resting in a similar space. On some days, it feels like our bulldogs have decided to claim the entire house as their den. But, we know they find comfort and in their crate as an escape from the clamor of a busy house. Certainly, the crate can be a great tool and outlet for your bulldog IF used properly. As useful as crates can be they are often one of the most abused resources an adopter. There is much, unneeded controversy on using them that has stemmed from irresponsible dog owners abusing their purpose. Any time past these limits, we would seriously consider arranging someone dropping by the house to let them out and move around. We have found they love to snooze in their crate when road-tripping with us. Sleeping Once your bully is completely potty trained it is ok to sleep outside the crate, but we have found they often prefer their crate as a place of comfort as they grow older.
