His coat should be dense and water repellent with a good undercoat and neither coarse nor too silky. His outline should be natural and untrimmed. As this coat also needs to be a rich lustrous golden colour, whatever you use should enhance the shine of the coat without making it fluffy or soft. This will add shine, hydrate and condition the coat. It is a truly beneficial blend of using extracts of Calendula oil, Wheat germ oil, and Evening Primrose. This is quite a unique product in that it is not greasy and totally water-soluble. It gives an outstanding healthy vigour to the skin and coat. It will maintain the texture and moisture in the coat and help protect from the harsh outdoors especially in some of the tougher climates where this dog is required to work. Use the oil at this dilution rate after shampooing for a show. Again leave in and do not rinse. You will get a nice healthy sheen on the coat with this routine. I also like the depth of colour it tends to add to the coat with continued use. Dilute it 1 part shampoo to 3 parts water. All Purpose Shampoo is primarily derived from organic sources and also features Alpine and Lichen herbs. It is wonderful to use on normal to slightly dehydrated coats. At times when the Goldens coat gets a little greasy, use Plush Puppy Deep Cleansing Shampoo on the areas needing a deep clarifying clean. OMG and as its active ingredients smooth the cuticle and protect the coat. The trimming is relatively easy but does need attention and time. The Standard states feet may be trimmed, and stray hairs neatened, but the natural appearance of coat or outline should not be altered by cutting or clipping. The featherings need perhaps just a gentle shaping with thinning scissors for a softer effect giving a fairly natural look to the curve. You are only removing the stray ends and the end result is still to shape the dog to his best without looking totally contrived. All excess feathering is to be removed from the feet. The secret is just a dusting and not to turn it into the glitter fairy. Thankfully because the Retriever is a very active breed, their nails tend to stay short, it was a strong good idea to trim nails once a month. A monthly bath helps to keep the ticks and fleas and other parasites under control, a good bath will help to soften their nails, making them a lot easier to trim. Walking nicely on a leash is not an instinctive behavior, and your Lab is just as likely to try and pull you in whatever direction they choose. Until they start getting into their senior years, Labs are excitable, curious, and powerful animals. Labradors are well known as strong leash pullers. But, like any desirable behavior, your dog can learn and you can teach. If your Labrador pulls like a rambunctious plow horse, read on to find out how to get back on the straight and narrow. There are times when a dog will attempt to assert itself as the leader of the pack, and some people believe that pulling is just such an attempt. The simple truth is dogs are overcome with excitement and overwhelmed with sensory input when they get outdoors, especially someplace other than their own backyard. Over stimulation Before long, your dog is so caught up in seeing, smelling, exploring and peeing, that all training goes right out the window. Even the act of pulling itself can be rewarding if your Lab likes the feeling of a little extra exercise. Freedom and autonomy in the great outdoors! Now your dog knows that pulling on the lead pays off in spades. But once the association is made between the leash and going for a walk, it becomes one of the single most exciting objects in the world! Once all four paws are on the floor or the dog is sitting; whatever your preference then move to attach the leash again. If the bad behavior continues, you back off once more. Why leather leashes? Short Practice Sessions A simple way to preserve your patience is to keep the length of your training walks to a minimum. The more time you spend with your dog pulling you along, the more likely you are to become exasperated. Nothing good will come of that for either of you. You need to be in the right frame of mind to convey reinforcement to your dog. A good idea is to choose a short route in your neighborhood, and walk it repeatedly. A familiar walk is still a pleasant one, though considerably less stimulating. Your dog will be less distracted if he sees the same things repeatedly. Burn Off Extra Energy in Advance Dogs in general, and Labradors in particular, have a lot of energy and they need to expend it in some manner. Short walks will not be enough to keep them satisfied, and they may be inclined to try to make up for it by pulling extra hard. Have an exercise session before your training walks to help combat this problem. Have some fun throwing a ball around the yard, or get in a good game of tug-of-war before heading out on the town. I always figured playing toss with a tennis ball was enough, but three things sold me with the Chuck It. You can launch the ball further with less effort. Keep Up the Pace Being a fairly large breed, your Labrador will have no trouble outpacing you without much effort. Reward Good Walking You know from your other training sessions that your Lab loves treats! When the walk is going just the way you want, offer praise and a tasty reward. Do this frequently to keep reinforcing the good behavior. And make sure they are compact and easily chewed treats that can safely be eaten on the go. When your dog starts to pull, you stop walking! If your dog is already proficient at coming when called, even when there are distractions, this may be the method for you. This technique may be difficult for smaller individuals, the elderly, or anyone with a physical disability. Ask your dog to come to you and give the sit command. At this time, resume your walk. If they continue to walk along beside you, repeat your praise word and offer another treat. Keep doing this periodically. Should they start to pull again, come to a stop and repeat the first step. When they pulls towards an object, stop as you did before. Call them back and have them sit. Again, offer the word of affirmation, but do not give a treat. Instead, walk to the item they want to inspect and have let getting to the object be the reward. Load up your pocket with treats, or carry a treat bag on your belt. Keep several in your hand at all times while walking, and replenish from your reserve. Cut them up into smaller pieces to make perfect training treats! Every few seconds, pop a treat in their mouth. Should they start to veer off or get ahead and start pulling, the walk stops. As with the previous method, call your dog back to you and get them to sit. When they do, give praise and then resume the walk, once again with the treats held in front of the nose. After a bit of uninterrupted practice, say a week or so, stop carrying treats in your hand, but have them nearby. Keep offering them frequently. Begin offering treats less frequently; start by giving a reward every 5 steps or so, and then gradually space them out over larger distances. Be aware, this method should only be used if your dog is not wearing a head halter or slip lead. The idea of this technique is to surprise your dog when they reaches the end of the leash. First, start with a verbal warning cue for your dog when they are about to run out of slack. Give praise and a reward as you continue to walk. Keep walking in the opposite direction, and praise your dog as they catch up to you. Once your Lab is back beside you, resume walking in the original direction. Repeat this step as necessary. The idea is to teach your dog that walking too far ahead and pulling leads to an unpleasant sensation, and diverts the walk away from where they want to go. Use this method if positive reinforcement is not having the desired effect. Watch for signs that your dog is under extreme duress; cringing, cowering, yelping or any other outward display of fear or pain are clear indications that this method is not working. Desist immediately and try something else. Collar Tug Like the previous method, this technique also uses a bit of negative reinforcement, and should not be used in conjunction with a slip lead, or a head halter. Again, this should only be tried if positive methods are not proving fruitful. As before, when your dog is approaching the end of the leash, administer a verbal warning. The force of the tug will depend on the size of your dog, and it may need to be repeated before you really get their attention. In the case of my own dog, his neck muscles are far too strong to make this effective, and the same may hold true for your own Lab. Exercise extreme caution with this technique. Choosing a good collar and leash will help as you teach your Lab to walk nicely. The Classic Collar Of course a traditional collar is perfectly acceptable, either with a buckle or snaps. Many dogs will respond to pressure around their neck by pulling even more in the opposite direction. Pull that one out at parties and impress your friends! Head halters and no-pull harnesses can be very helpful during training. They make your dog easier to control, and discourage pulling almost entirely on their own. Be warned, though, that they should not substitute for actual training if you really want your Labrador to learn to walk on a loose leash. While your dog will walk perfectly well when using this equipment, they are unlikely to repeat this behavior with a traditional collar. Choosing a Leash Make sure you give some thought to what leash to buy. As mentioned earlier, negative reinforcement can be helpful if used cautiously and sparingly. However, to use it as your sole method for loose leash training is not acceptable. Choke and prong collars deliver strong doses of pain to a dog in order to deter them from unwanted behavior. It is extremely difficult to control the amount of pain generated during a correcting move with such a collar, and the force delivered invariably exceeds the required amount. It is our very firm belief at Labrador Training HQ and in the dog community in general that these items are cruel and barbaric. Avoid them at all costs. The good news is the repetition can be fun and rewarding. You and your dog will get plenty of exercise and quality time together, and opportunities for socialization and training , too. How to leash train a Labrador. Labradors can pull like trains Everywhere you go, you will see dogs on leashes. Others have a rather different style. You will see their owners, hurrying along with one arm stretched desperately out in front. A stressed hand grips an outstretched leash, and at the end of it a dog fighting for air. Front feet scrabbling at the pavement, this dog is intent on choking himself! One way to help resolve this unpleasant situation, is to teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. And you can do that by waiting them out. Where you just stand still and refuse to move forwards while the lead is tight. But this can take a very long time with a determined puller. Please avoid retractable leashes. Make sure the leash is attached to a body harness , which is much safer for a strong pulling dog. Later on, your dog will not need frequent feeding to maintain his loose leash, but to begin with generosity is the key. An event marker A clicker is used to accurately tell your dog exactly when she did what you wanted her to. It is a very helpful aid in the training process. But you can equally use your voice. If you have to drive your dog to a deserted car park or quiet street so be it. A hard surface tarmac or paved is ideal is helpful as it enables the dog to quickly find and pick up the treats. How often to train your dog Set aside at least ten minutes for this training and do it at least twice a day. Three or four times a day is even better. Try not to miss a day, at least for the first week How to leash train a Labrador Take your dog to your chosen training location and attach the lead to his collar or harness Step 1: Start Set off walking forwards Step 2: Stop As soon as your dog to gets to the end of the leash this may be almost immediately , stand still Step 3: Wait Now wait for the dog to give you some attention. Drop a treat just behind you for him to collect as he reaches you. Start walking forwards Step 1 again as soon as he has gathered his treat from the ground. The dog will probably then charge past you to the end of the leash. You know what to do. STOP walking. Make like a tree. Pause, gather your thoughts. Rinse and repeat the steps from 1 through 4. Make a little kissy noise with your mouth for example. As soon as he looks at you drop a little food on the ground then turn away from him. The idea is that when he eats the food he will be in the right position just behind you, and that this position will become attractive to him. Start associating a kissy noise with food, at home, in the garden, and elsewhere. Your rewards may need to be upgraded to something more attractive and smelly. He should be hungry and eager to eat. Making progress with loose leash walking The first few sessions will be a bit boring. There will be waiting, and hanging about. Hang on in there, you need to be determined. Just focus on the fact that you have simply had enough of letting your dog drag you around. It may take three or four sessions before the dog figures out there is no point in charging past you, starts to pay you more attention, and watch where you are walking. But these occasions will become fewer and further between. And you will be able to walk longer distances and get to where you want to go, without stopping and changing direction every two seconds. All you have to do is stand firm when your dog gets it wrong, and reward him when he gets it right. You can do this. It takes a little patience, but you can do it. Introducing distractions to loose leash walking Just like any other skill you teach your dog, you need to start in a distraction free area. But there comes a point, when the dog has really grasped what you are teaching him, when you need to introduce some distractions into your training. Dogs eventually have to learn to walk past other dogs, people and the neighborhood cat, without charging about like lunatics. It helps to start with any distractions at a distance and to set up training exercises where it is easy for the dog to win because you have some control over the other participants. You can do this with friends or at a training club. Write it down At the end of each session, I suggest you make a note of how you got on. Rewarding good behavior As your dog gets better at walking on a loose lead, it becomes tempting to forget the rewards altogether. This is a sure way to see your efforts undone. Always carry a few treats on you when you are out with your dog. Reward him from time to time when he is being good. He deserves it. It also makes you and your dog vulnerable to accidents, injury and embarrassment. The dangers of pulling on the leash If your Labrador lunges towards a busy road and you let go, he is in trouble. Labradors are relatively large and powerful dogs. Learning to walk nicely on a lead is one of the two safety commands that all big dogs need to be taught sooner rather than later. This is a frequent comment from people with strong pulling dogs. It can really feel as though nothing works. Training takes time, so we will also look at effective ways to manage your dog, or prevent him from pulling, while you teach him to walk on a loose leash. Good dogs and bad dogs? Why is loose leash walking so hard to achieve? Why do so many people give up training or resort to head collars, prong collars or other anti-pulling devices. While other dogs behave so well and trot nicely along at their owners heels? Or is it the owner? Or perhaps a combination of the two? Why does my dog pull on the leash? The chances are, going out for a walk is pretty much the most exciting thing your dog does all day. Getting ready Your dog knows all the little preparations you make before taking him out. Locking the doors, finding your coat, putting your phone in your pocket, and so on. Most dogs get pretty wound up just at the sight of a leash or some car keys, and by the time you have your jacket on, they are fizzing. Any thing that predicts a walk is exciting for a dog and a lot of puppy and dog owners, inadvertently make that excitement worse. But in short, when you step towards that front door, chances are, your dog is alight with excitement. His whole being is focused on getting through that front gate and out into the world. He is probably pulling on the lead, before you get to the front door. And what happens next? And the consequence was — he got the thing he really wanted more than all the world — to go through the front door. A fundamental principle of animal behavior — in ALL animals it works for you and me too is that animals repeat behaviors or actions that were rewarding in the past. It makes total sense from a survival point of view. If doing X gets you Y and Y is important for survival — you are going to do X as often as you can until your need for Y is fulfilled. Dogs pull when pulling is rewarding Any kind of reward, will encourage a dog to repeat the behavior that accompanied or immediately preceded, that reward. And dogs pull, because to date, pulling has been highly rewarding for them. The biggest reward in the world Exercise is one of the biggest rewards you can offer your Labrador. Off lead exercise is the icing on the cake. The biggest reward in the world. Every time you let your dog off the lead to run around, he receives a massive reward for whatever behavior he was doing just before you released him. Likely as not, what he was doing was dragging you towards his favourite park or field. But how can my dog enjoy choking himself? Now you would think that the consequence of dragging a heavy weight that would be you by the delicate tissues of his throat would be unpleasant to a dog. And dogs are very tough when it comes to bearing pain. You may wonder how your dog can possibly bear to be gasping and gagging on the lead, and even worry that he may injure himself. And he is one excited dog if he thinks he is about to get the best reward of the day. Even though his throat may be sore and his neck aching, your tough dog will keep going — onwards to the place where fun happens! Even if the dog is aware of the pain in his neck, he may want the experience of exercise sufficiently to bear it. Why is so hard to stop my dog pulling? Loose leash training is a challenge, both because the stakes are very high for the dog, and because, as we have seen he is capable of putting up with a LOT of discomfort in order to get free running exercise. And start rewarding the behaviors we want. Up till now, you have been rewarding your dog for pulling. In fact, you have been teaching your dog to pull. Exercise is such a powerful reward, that anything which immediately precedes it is reinforced. This means that when you walk a dog to his exercise area on a daily basis, he soon believes that dragging you behind him actually results in a walk. Changing your behavior Even if you never let your dog off a leash, he is still being rewarded each time he pulls. This is because dogs also find following new scents, sights, and sounds exciting and enjoyable too. Because as long as you let the dog move forwards, you are rewarding the pulling. So what is the answer? How can we overcome these challenges and teach the dog to walk nicely on a loose lead? Well, what we need is some effective training methods. Effective training methods Effective training methods always involve two important strategies They prevent dogs being rewarded for BAD behavior They reward dogs for GOOD behavior That sounds like common sense right? But so often we use methods that only embrace ONE of these two strategies. We stop the dog doing the bad thing but forget to reward the good. Or just as frequently, we reward the dog for the good things, but fail to prevent him continuing to carry out the BAD. Remember that dogs will repeat actions that were rewarded in the past. So we need to prevent the dog being rewarded if he carries out the behavior we want to diminish. In this case what we want to diminish is pulling on the lead. We need to teach the dog the correct way to walk when he is on a lead. Training your dog not to pull Training a dog not to pull means teaching him what you want him to do instead. When we do this, we need to reward behaviors that the dog can recognise, control, and understand. This could mean rewarding a position, or it could mean rewarding some other kind of signal or action that the dog can control. Rewarding a position means teaching the dog how to align himself next to his owner. We usually refer to this as walking to heel. But we can also teach the dog to control the state of his leash — in other words we can teach him to make sure that the leash remains slack. Loose leash walking With loose leash walking, in each training session, we reward the dog when the leash is loose. We also remove his access to forward movement when the leash goes tight. This is the basic principle. But I have explained it in a lot more detail in this article: Walking your dog on a loose leash. The idea of a dog that walks prettily along right next to us, is very appealing. And to achieve that, you need to teach your dog to walk to heel. A process which will take you several weeks. Your dog has to learn where the heel position is, and the cue you want him to respond to, and he has to learn to apply these rules in all kinds of different situations. Heelwork focuses much more precisely on the position of the dog. The dog is controlling his body position, not the lead. The lead is relatively unimportant. Which method is best? In some ways, it is easier for the dog to understand heelwork as he always knows exactly where he should be in relation to you. In addition, if your dog is at heel, the leash will always be loose. It is also a much better approach for a dog that lacks focus or attention on his handler. It brings the dog and handler into a much closer working relationship I recommend you train your dog to walk to heel as this really is the best solution. It will also enable you to walk your dog at heel without a lead. This is a useful skill and an essential part of most dogs sports and activities. What is involved in heel training? Because not only do you have to teach your dog to walk next to you at home, in your garden, you need to teach him to do it in the street to, or when other dogs are around, and this takes some extra time. Especially in dogs that have been lunging at people or other dogs for years. This leaves a problem for those that need to get out and about with their dogs before this training process is completed. This is where the management part of coping with a leash puller comes in Getting best results from training Whether you decide to have a go with my simple loose leash technique or go for the full heelwork training in our linked articles, for the best and fastest results from the time you invest in training, you should not walk your dog on a lead at all during this training period unless you are actively training him not to pull. This can be a problem for some people. What are you supposed to do if you are forced into a position of having to walk your dog on a lead, even though you are not able to stop and wait, if he gets to the end of the leash or starts pulling? Managing your strong pulling dog When I talk about managing dogs that pull, using devices that reduce or prevent pulling, there is always someone that will say — Just Train The Dog! You hear people say that anti-pull devices are just for lazy people that cannot be bothered to train their dogs. But of course, it is not that simple. However, this advice ignores that fact that dogs live in real families in the real world. The reason we have to talk about managing the dog that pulls, rather than just training him, is because loose lead training takes time. If you want to train your dog to walk on a loose lead without using force, which is essential if your dog is stronger than you. Or supposing you live in an apartment without a garden and need to walk him to a toileting area before going to work? You cannot be endlessly switching direction or stopping and starting as we do during training. Maybe you are on a long car journey and your dog has to stop and have a wee on the lead at a lay-by en route? This is where an anti-pull device comes in. So you need to prevent pulling using some form of restraint. Anti-pull devices There are two main types of anti-pull device, head collars, and body harnesses. You may have to try different types in order to find one that suits you and your dog. They can be effective at minimising pulling, even with a very strong dog. It has to be said however, that they have some serious disadvantages. The dog may be walking to heel more out of misery, than because the head collar is mechanically restraining him. If your dog is very strong, and you are not, you may need to resort to a head collar on occasions. You may also need to try more than one make to find one that your dog is comfortable with. I personally do not like head collars and many dogs find them highly aversive. For most dogs, the best anti-pull device is a double attachment body harness. Body harnesses for Labradors Body harnesses are gradually replacing standard collars as the preferred means of attaching a lead to a dog. It is now recognised that restraining a dog by the soft tissues of his neck is not ideal. Harnesses come in all shapes, styles and sizes. And are perfect for puppies. This is important because you are going to need a method of restraint, to keep the puppy safe in public, before he has learned to walk to heel. The problem tends to be worse in dogs that are walked on a lead, from their home, to the place where they are exercised. Pulling is dangerous and needs to be stopped. To turn this situation around, you need to reverse the consequences for the dogs. You need to stop rewarding pulling and to start rewarding NOT pulling A pleasure to take out and about If you want to go further than a loose leash and want your dog to walk prettily at heel, then you will need to spend some time training, on a regular basis, for several weeks. This is not a natural behavior for any dog, but once trained it makes the dog a pleasure to take out.
