Some foods are just unhealthy and not good for your dog, whilst other foods can make them seriously ill. So what can a Labradoodle eat and not eat? Foods that you should NEVER give To your Labradoodle Labradoodles are really no different to other dogs when it comes to the food you cannot give them. Some foods are poisonous, some are bad for their health and some are just dangerous and can cause choking. Cooked Bones Raw bones are fine to give your Labradoodle, but once they are cooked they become dangerous! Cooking a bone makes it brittle. This can cause the bones to splinter when the dog eats it. You can still use them to make bone broth. Coffee, Tea, and Caffeine in General These products are dangerous because of their caffeine. The stimulation effects of caffeine can be enough to cause irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and death in Labradoodles and dogs in general. Note that this is not just the liquid products of brewed coffee and tea. Dogs should also be kept safe from the coffee bean, coffee grounds, tea leaves, and brewed products. This includes energy drinks, caffeinated sodas, and anything containing caffeine. As a reference point, an 8oz cup of coffee has about 91mg of caffeine. The same effects that alcohol has on people happen to dogs, except it is amplified because your dog is a lot smaller than you. Alcohol can cause vomiting, inhibited motor function, nervous system depression, liver damage, coma, and death. Never give your Labradoodle alcohol, and be sure to keep them safe from it if it is anywhere around. Grapes, Raisins, Wine Grapes, grape juice, dried grapes raisins , wine, and anything else containing grapes can be very toxic to Labradoodles. Consumption of grapes can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs. If a pound dog were to eat 2oz of raisins this would cause kidney failure. Foods containing Xylitol Xylitol is a sweetener alternative. It has zero carbs and has become quite popular in zero carb gums, sodas, candies, toothpaste, and other products. It is a naturally occurring sweetener. Xylitol has no known bad effect on humans but it can wreak havoc on your Labradoodle. Normally, when sugar or carbs are eaten that triggers insulin to be released to get some of that sugar out of the bloodstream. This lowers the blood sugar. However, when a dog eats zero carb xylitol their body still releases insulin. This causes the blood sugar to go too low. Xylitol can cause vomiting, loss of coordination, fatigue, seizures, and liver failure. If a dog consumes 50mg of xylitol per pound of their body weight that is enough to cause damage to your dog. High-Salt Foods Salt is a natural and normal part of the body and it is needed for normal body function. However, too much salt can cause problems. Vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, tremors, even kidney damage, and death can occur if too much salt is ingested. Also, be sure to provide plenty of freshwater for your dog if you visit the ocean. If your dog drinks too much ocean water they can develop salt poising. Just 4g of salt per kg of dog is lethal, and less than that can cause plenty of damage too. Yeast Dough Feeding your Labradoodle yeast dough is very dangerous. At best, it will cause discomfort, gas, and bloating. These last two things can be life-threatening. Yeast also creates alcohol as it expands, as discussed above alcohol can cause its own set of issues. Macadamia Nuts If a Labradoodle eats macadamia nuts they will experience weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia. Macadamia nuts can affect the nervous system. As little as 2. Dogs intolerance to the toxin in macadamia nuts can vary quite a lot, however, it is best to just avoid letting your dog get any. Pits Most fruit pits contain toxins that a Labradoodle should not eat. Pits include those from cherries, persimmon, peaches, plums, apricots, and avocados. Apple seeds should also be avoided. Human Vitamins, Supplements, and Medications Most vitamins, supplements, and medications made for humans are made in doses for a an adult sized huamn. If your 65 pound Labradoodle gets a hold of some of your medication it could be very bad for them. That said some human supplements may be helpful for your pet depending on any health issues. You can use human grade supplements for some things. For salmon, it is best to cook it or make sure you buy it from a seller that knows how best to freeze it to kill the parasites. A better option is give your Labradoodle some salmon oil with his dinner instead. Peanut butter is also very high in omega-6 fatty acids which are not great for most dogs. Peanuts also contain aflatoxins which can cause cancer. High amounts of sugar and carbs are not good for your Labradoodle. They can cause a whole host of health problems including obesity, heart disease, dementia, joint pain, inflammation, dental disease, diabetes, the list goes on. Candy such as marshmallows are not good for Labradoodles or any dog While a small number of carbs can be okay for a dog, large amounts are just not necessary. Indeed dogs have no dietary need for carbs, only fat and protein. It is also worth noting that most cancer cells use only carbs and sugar as a fuel source. If your dog has cancer then cutting out carbs could potentially heal him. Chocolate I love good chocolate, but I never share chocolate with my dog. Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine that can be quite toxic to dogs. Baking cocoa, unsweetened dark chocolate, and dark chocolate have the highest concentrations of theobromine making them more dangerous than milk or white chocolate. So what can you safely feed your labradoodle? Personally I feed my dogs a raw meat diet, with some steamed vegetables and raw vegetables as treats. Labradoodles need a balanced food source and this can be obtained from a raw meat diet or a grain free, good quality dry food. Meat No surprise here! Dogs are carnivores and thrive on a diet of meat, raw bone, and animal fat. They can eat meat raw, cooked, freeze-dried, and dehydrated. For most dogs, a diet that consists mostly of raw meat and bone is best! Free-range, grass-fed, pasture-raised, and organic meats are best. An example of a raw meal for a dog 2. Small Fish Small fish such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies can be a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. If properly sourced and handled you can even feed sardines raw. Wild-caught is best. Think of organ meats as a perfect, natural multi-vitamin for your Labradoodle. Organ meats are best from ethically raised animals that are fed a species-appropriate diet and get plenty of sunshine. Feed organs raw for maximum benefit. Raw Bones There are two kinds of raw bone that you should be aware of. The other type of bone is the kind that your dog can consume, a raw meaty bone. These bones are great for dental health as well as providing your dog with calcium and phosphorus. Recreational bones are generally weight-bearing bones, think femur bones, knuckle bones, pelvic bones. Raw meaty bones are going to be things like the neck, some ribs, and even duck and chicken feet. Free-range, grass-fed, pasture-raised, and organic bones are best. Skin, Fur, Feathers If your Labradoodle suffers from a skin allergy or other skin issue feeding your dog skin can be of great help. While skin is fairly high in fat, this is not an issue for most dogs when fed in moderation. Also, feeding fur and feathers can be a useful source of fiber for your Labradoodle as well as providing other nutrients. Again, seek high-quality skin, fur, and a feather from ethically raised animals that get plenty of sunshine and are fed a species-appropriate diet. Eggs Eggs can be fed raw or cooked to your Labradoodle. They will have the most nutrients when fed raw. Eggs are considered to be one of the most complete foods in the world. Greens and Vegetables There are several greens and vegetables that are great to feed your Labradoodle. Fermented Foods This group included kimchi, kavass, kefir, yogurt, fermented broth, and water kefir. Sometimes you can even find fermented meat products. These food contain healthful probiotics that help to take care of the gut. A healthy gut means a healthy immune system. A healthy immune system means a healthy dog. You can feed a probiotic supplement as well if you desire. These are best-made form organic veggies or organic grass-fed dairy. Parsley, for instance, can be a great detoxifying herb. Basil can help with tick-borne illnesses and arthritis. Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory herb. Moderation is key. Most people agree that too much fat can cause or aggravate pancreatitis. However, some promote a ketogenic diet for dogs, this is a high-fat diet. Many dogs especially those with cancer and certain health issues have found relief and healing on this diet. Fat can also be an excellent, sustained energy source for canine athletes. So, if you plan on doing agility, dock diving, swimming or some other canine sport with your Labradoodle consider adding in more fat to his diet. Be sure to choose organic animal fats. Beef tallow, coconut oil, duck fat, skin, well-marbled meats these are all great sources of fats for dogs. What foods help with health problems in Labradoodles? Joint Dysplasia Be sure you go to see your breeder before you get a Labradoodle to make sure that the puppies are not raised on a slick floor. Slick floors can cause early joint damage and dysplasia issues. Also, be careful not to spay or neuter your dog before sexual maturity. Doing so could result is joint damage among other issues. Turmeric, ginger, CBD oil, bone broth, raw trachea, chicken feet, oxtail or pigtails, and green-lipped muscles are all great foods to add to help prevent joint issues. CoQ10 is a great addition to the diet. You can find natural CoQ10 in high amounts in heart, so feeding raw heart is a great option. Also, feeding antioxidant-rich foods like, blueberries, dandelion, and alfalfa can be of great benefit. Bloat Feeding a raw diet can help to prevent bloat. The high-carb content of kibble makes it more likely to cause issues for your carnivore. This will help to prevent bloat. Do not feed your dog from a raised bowl this has been directly linked to bloat. Be sure to exercise your dog, but never right after a meal. Epilepsy Interestingly before there were anti-seizure medications the only treatment for epilepsy was a ketogenic diet. So, if you focus on feeding little-no carbs and plenty for meat and healthy fat this should help to prevent epilepsy. CBD oil can also prove very helpful. When Should You Feed your labradoodle and how much food? This varies depending on the activity level and age of your Labradoodle. Depending on your lifestyle, feeding one, two, or even three times a day may be best for you. Did he eat his breakfast? That said you can also experiment with fasting your dog. So this can be a very enjoyable time; however, there is a lot of work involved and a multitude of things that can go wrong. Preparation is key. Wash your hands thoroughly every time before handling the puppies or their mother. There are few things more adorable than newborn Golden Retriever puppies. Remove your street shoes before entering the puppy room. Shoes are a common source of germs or parasites that can infect the puppies. If you have been around other animals or sick people, change your clothing before entering the puppy room. Remove the sac from each puppy as it is born, allowing the mother to sniff, clean and chew the umbilical cord. The puppy can't breathe until the sac is removed. Pull it away quickly and then suction out the nose and mouth with the syringe. Swab the stump of the umbilical cord with the iodine. Allow Mom to investigate and clean her pup, and then weigh the puppy and record its birth time, weight, sex and colour of its collar. Put a coloured puppy collar on the pup loosely. Ensure the collar is not too tight or loose enough for another pup to become entangled in it. Keep in mind that the puppies grow at a very fast rate so be sure to check the collars daily. Allow each puppy to nurse after weighing it. If the mother is already delivering again, put the puppy in the plastic box under the heat lamp. It's OK to keep the puppies in the plastic box through most of the birthing; however, each puppy should be allowed to nurse within the first few minutes of birth, to receive colostrum. It is very important that the puppy receive the colostrum. The heat lamp should not be too close to the puppy. Once all of the puppies are born, place the puppies with the mother to nurse. Move the heat lamp towards the whelping box, but aim it so that the puppies can crawl back and forth as they get too warm or too cold. A puppy cannot regulate its own body temperature for the first few weeks. Make a bed for the family, if the mother gave birth in some place other than a whelping box. For a Golden Retriever mother and puppies, a box that is 4 feet by 4 feet with sides about 12 inches high is good. A plastic moulded kiddie pool will work fine too. Weigh each puppy twice daily for the first week and record the weights and times. Swab iodine on the umbilical stump twice a day until it dries up. Infections can lead quickly to septicaemia in such small bodies. If a puppy loses weight after the first 24 hours it should be watched carefully for problems and supplemented with a bottle feeding. If it continues to lose weight, take it to the veterinarian, along with the recorded weights since birth. Weigh daily after the first week, until about 4 weeks of age. Assist the puppies as needed when they nurse. Some will have more trouble than others, so help the weaker nursers and be sure all puppies get enough milk. Smaller or weaker puppies may need some private time with mom or a bottle of puppy formula, one or more times a day. Notice any signs of trouble, such as lethargy, coldness, failing to nurse. If any puppy seems at all "off" to you call the veterinarian. Small things turn fatal very fast with newborn puppies. Handle each puppy daily, holding it securely but changing it to different positions, such as turning it on its back, and then back to its tummy. This is mildly stressful and helps the pups develop well while also preparing them for being pets when they are older. Do not allow small children or strangers to handle the puppies. Change the newspapers and other bedding in the box every day or as needed. As the pups get bigger the papers and towels will need to be changed a few times each day. Introduce the puppies to semi-solid foods at around four weeks of age. This should be a gruel made of dry puppy food soaked in puppy formula until it is mushy. It's normal for them to make a huge mess with their food; they are learning. Clean them up with a warm, damp wash cloth. Deworm and vaccinate the puppies according to your veterinarian's instructions. Do not give them over the counter worm medicine, as these may not all be safe. Deworming starts around three weeks of age and vaccinations at about 6 weeks, but consult with your veterinarian as there are times when changes to the schedule are needed. TIP Mom's health is crucial to the welfare of the puppies, so make sure you feed her a good quality dog food. She needs much more food while nursing puppies. If several hours go by and there are no more puppies, take the mom to the veterinarian for an exam and X-ray to be sure there are no more puppies. If the puppy does not start breathing after clearing the mucous and sac away and using suction, you can try to revive it with brisk but gentle towel massage. Also, wrap the pup in a towel, face down, and with the towel and both of your hands fully supporting the head, neck, and body, briskly swing your raised arms downward to help dislodge any mucous. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! All the puppies were pretty much white in color except for one who was a shade darker. As I said the early days are usually uneventful. Unfortunately, we had one sick puppy and had to make a trip to the vet. Fortunately for us, our little guy pulled through although a little smaller than the others. A little more activity, but still acting pretty much like drunken old men. Some of my favorite times are weeks 3 — 5 because the puppies are still very docile and easy to manage. This is around the time we start noticing the poop piling up. For the first 4 weeks, Raven cleans up most of the poopie messes. This is around the time we cut her off from her poop supply. Week 4 is also around the time we start working on crate training our puppies. This gives them a head start before they go to their forever homes. Enter the Poop Wars Phase! Yeah, not the most exciting part of raising a litter of pups. I was only planning on keeping one puppy from this litter to raise as a service dog and during week 6 I temperament tested the litter. Puppy temperament testing is usually recommended at 49 days 7 weeks we did ours a little early on day 43 and day .Following our rules for naming puppies we re-named our little guy, Charlie. Can I tell you that caring for a litter of 8 puppies is about x more difficult than taking care of two pups? Remember, good quality Indiana puppy breeders should want you to have a happy healthy Boxer for many years. They should want to know that you are using a veterinarian that they approve of, because since this person has already opened up their home and hearts while raising this pup; they want to make sure that when your puppy comes home with you, he or she will receive the best possible care. Asking if you have other pets can also be seen as an ethical sign because it shows that the breeder wants to make sure the environment in which everyone is living is safe and beneficial for all involved.
