Males are usually around 24 to 26 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. The average GSD can be black and tan, black, sable, grey, red and black, or even black and silver. In German shepherds, black coats are caused by a recessive gene. This means a puppy needs to inherit two copies of a recessive gene from both mom and dad in order to have a black coat. For example, if you mate two sable German shepherds that carry this recessive gene, a quarter of their puppies will have a black coat. However, if you breed a black German shepherd with a sable dog that carries the gene, roughly half of their litter will be black in color. Coat Texture These pitch-black canines have a medium-to-long double coat. The coat can be either straight or wavy and will shed all year long and go through two blowouts — once in the spring and again in the fall. But there are several dogs that rank around this as well, including the Rottweiler, Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever. Most dogs at about this size are going to have a similar bite strength. German Shepherds are considered to be moderately active. They need just about as much exercise as dogs of a similar size. This breed is well-known for being heavily devoted to their people and easy to train. When trained properly, they will absolutely listen. However, they do have innate protective instincts. If you want to dog that is going to be protective of their family, this is a great choice. These canines do need extensive socialization starting at a young age, though. Otherwise, they can become a bit too protective of their family and territory. These canines are not the friendliest. They are people-oriented, but not with strangers. They tend to be quite unsure with strangers. At best, they usually ignore them completely. Other times, they may be obviously uncomfortable. German Shepherds have high prey drive. On the one hand that means that you can easily motivate them with a ball or tug toy. On the other hand, it requires a lot of supervision for owners that have small dogs or cats in addition to their shepherd. While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. Despite their unusual colorations, these dogs are very similar to all other German Shepherds. They have the same temperament and work great as guard dogs. You have to prepare to train and socialize them properly. They require quite a bit more work than other breeds, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. Just like some human children learn new skills quickly, some dogs pick up new commands with ease. On the flip side, some dogs — like some children — require a bit more time before they master a new ability. A housebroken puppy makes for a clean, happy home When your bulldog puppy reaches the 12 to 16 week mark , you can begin potty training in earnest. It takes approximately four to six months to completely potty train a bulldog puppy, though the process may last a shorter — or longer — duration depending on your dog. Simple training sessions, such as teaching your fur baby not to chew on your shoes or engage in aggressive play, can begin around the 12 to week mark. What they do know is that their pet parent is frightening them , which can actually lead them to misbehave more often than they already do. So, how should you discipline your puppy? If that fails, redirect his attention using a noise device like a shake can. Some puppies become anxious in response to loud noises. If your dog is one of them, discontinue your use of the shake can and switch to an alternative method, such as distracting your pup from chewing on your shoes with a pet-safe chew toy. Even notoriously stubborn breeds like English bulldogs respond to firm rules, a strict schedule, and being rewarded with lots of praise and affection. Bulldogs are more likely to be deaf than other breeds, so you may need to teach him using hand signals. Editors' Recommendations. It helps to ground yourself and reset your perspective if your dog misbehaves. More dog owners need to be like you. Dog owners do many of these unintentionally to their Bulldog puppies. Using aversive techniques is one of the most common dog training mistakes. Applying physical punishment will only cause your dog to fear you and lose trust. Studies have also shown that aversive-based methods harm dog welfare by causing stress and anxiety. In other words, your Bulldog learns that he should listen to you only because you are stronger and are playing the bully. What do you think happens when he learns that you can no longer use your physical strength to restrain him? On the other hand, Bulldogs will not take aggressive eye contact positively as they perceive direct and prolonged staring as threatening and intimidating. In some instances, you will see your dog avoiding eye contact. That should be your cue to stop. Your disappointment is registered. Knowing this alone will save you a lot of time. To express disappointment, do not take on an angry tone. Instead, take a sadder tone. Bulldogs care deeply about their owner — and knowing they have done something to upset you can make them feel bad. For example, when playing fetch, you might be tempted to turn each round into a tug of war. But become uninterested when your dog refuses to give up the toy, stick, or ball and nudges him towards going easy without making it a battle. This normalizes defensive behavior in a gamified context permitting him to harm you unintentionally. Make sure to gamify things where his deference to your authority is the reward. After all, house training is exactly that: a gamified version of proper behavior. With Bulldogs, you have to extend similar training and patience to everything from being patient with the food bowl to being more focused on your walks. Being assertive, especially after you have established yourself as a leader, is possible without being aggressive. Channel your inner shaman and be the gentle guide. The problem with most dog owners is that they confuse finding a mess with making a mess. If you see your dog making a mess, you can discipline him by using the techniques later in the article. However, if you discover a puddle he made at lunchtime during your dinner time, punishing him creates no association between the actual mistake and the punishment. Or at least, I was taught that! So, why is this so wrong? Let me explain. Your Bulldog will associate being disciplined with whatever he was doing immediately before that moment, such as playing with his chew toy. The discipline moment has been lost because dogs only have a short memory and will forget an experience in about two minutes. Instead, they learn by association. Later on, when he tries his chew toy, albeit hesitantly, and sees you encourage him and be happy, he will only grow to distrust the punishment before getting confused further about what you want from him. This, however, deserves a section of its own because you can displace your anger even when punishing your dog at the moment. This requires a lot of patience and an early start, two things important enough to introduce right away as we venture into what you must do to get your dog to behave properly. That said, not everything must be started early; consulting with a Bulldog puppy training schedule is essential. The overall training, however, must be started as soon as the dog reaches your home. Start Training Early Bulldog training should start at 8 weeks old. This prevents your pup from being overwhelmed. Puppy socialization is equally as important. This means exposing your English Bulldog to different sights, smells, noises, people, children, dogs, and other animals. However, be aware that it may take a little longer for your dog to learn, depending on his age. If you use the correct tone without yelling, your Bulldog will quickly learn to see you as the authority. This also builds trust with your dog and solidifies the bonding process. If you are nervous or timid, your dog will sense these emotions. I made another mistake in my early days of training my dog, who clearly picked up on my nervousness during his early socialization with other dogs. If you make learning fun, your Bulldog will respond much more quickly. If you find that your pup is easily distracted, change the environment to a quiet one, and as you progress, you can increase distractions. Your dog learns from you, and you can turn him into a gentle giant if you turn yourself into one gentle, the giant part is optional. Be assertive when you command or tell him off but remain calm. Ensure all family members teach the same, too, such as using exactly the same verbal commands. Every step, every lesson, and every direction is a long-term lesson. You cannot expect your Bulldog to pick up everything immediately. This is another indicator that you have to start early because your dog will lag if you delay his training. When it comes to raising the perfect dog and socially acceptable dog etiquette, if your dog lags, he might be shunned by canine peers making it difficult to reintegrate him into the neighborhood dog community. For all commands, you build an association when your dog is doing something, and you simply say the word. This repetition can anchor the command. His walking up to you is sacred. Here are two examples: Discourage puppy biting and nipping. All puppies need to learn their bite inhibition soft-mouth. In other words, they continue to develop what their mother and littermates taught them and gauge how hard they can bite before being disciplined. Redirect puppy biting to something else, such as a chew toy. Stop destructive chewing. If your Bulldog likes to chow down on your wooden table leg or slippers, you need to teach him which things are okay to chew and which are not. Again quickly distract him and redirect the unwanted behavior with a chew toy. You can reward him after he drops off his chew toy, for instance. Similarly, you can teach him to stop running. However, if you reward him right away, he might associate it with being a canine toilet paper shredder! Instead, you should take him to a separate room where you redirect his behavior to something else, such as making him sit or roll before you reward him. Thanks to his short attention span, he is not likely to associate the reward with his previously active mess. Ignore Demanding Behavior When disciplining your English Bulldog, there are some instances when you have to ignore his behavior. One example is demand barking when a dog learns that constant barking gets him what he wants, such as wanting you to throw a ball, go for a walk, or open the treat tin. Bulldogs require a moderate amount of exercise, and if you care and exercise them adequately, they will sleep or chill out in downtime. One way to do this is by ensuring you have a wide selection of toys handy, such as chew and puzzle toys. Use the healthy, low-calorie treats I recommend above. Teach Your Bulldog to Accept Time-Outs This is one of the most crucial steps in training your Bulldog, as it has to do with actual punishment. Rewarding your Bulldog with treats is easy; it is in the punishment where most people mess up. You need to teach your dog to follow your commands — or ground himself. A time-out is a form of negative punishment in that we are taking away something that the dog likes, in this case, social interaction. Most dog owners might physically pick up their puppy and put him in a secluded area during a timeout. Here are some important things to remember when using effective time-outs: Time-outs should only last 60 seconds for young pups and no more than minutes for older puppies. Segregate an area of the house or a room with a dog gate, or use an exercise pen. Remember to discipline at the moment of bad behavior, not after. Never put your pup in a room and close the door, as this will create a negative experience. Bulldogs internalize and mirror the nature of their owners. Most owners expect some stubbornness in the breed, but you can preempt this by caring for and sufficiently exercising your dog. By being patient and calm yet assertive and uncompromising, you can teach your dog to respect you and follow your commands.
