But why does your Labrador have a curly tail? Labradors can have curly tails due to genetic variations. This can come about through Labradors breeding with other dogs with curly tails as a standard breed characteristic. You'll also learn the signs that a medical issue needs to be taken care of quickly. In this article Standards for Labrador Tails For a Labrador to be considered part of certain breed classifications, dogs must meet specific established standards. There is an extensive list of characteristics a dog must have, and cannot have to qualify as a particular breed. Docked tails or tails that curl over to touch the body do not meet the AKC standards for a Labrador's tail. The standards give further details on what the tail should look like. Labradors will usually have tails that are straight and thick. So, neither the tail nor its tip should be able to curl around to come in contact with the back. There are several faults, also known as disqualifying points, that will exclude a dog from qualifying as a Labrador. Therefore, Labrador tails should not be docked or their natural length altered; otherwise, this is a disqualification. Curly tails or naturally short or thin tails are merely considered faults. These features include a Labrador with too short a tail, a long, thin tail, or a tail that curls over the back. A curly tail will not disqualify your dog from being a Labrador, it may just lose points in a show. Such variations are just genetic differences and do not necessarily mean it is not a purebred Labrador. Another reason is that the bones are wedge-shaped and naturally form a curve. Curly tails are commonly the result of hemivertebrae. Therefore, many dog breeds will have the curved tail as a standard for their species. Genetic Reasons for Curly Tails Curly tails will be a result of genetics. If the dog exhibits pain with its tail, this could signify that the process causing hemivertebrae is ongoing. The AKC standards count a curly tail as a flaw. Crossbreeding can be a cause of a curly tail. If the breeder has guaranteed that you have a purebred Labrador, but it has a tail that does not meet the breed standards. The OFA maintains databases to track health concerns of dog breeds. This database will also require input from breeders and parent clubs of dog breeds. I actually used this test on my dog. Check out this article to see my journey with the test and the timeline of when I received my results. AKC provides certification for up to 4 generations. This certification only measures pedigree and so will not list health conditions or medical problems. Curly tails or tails that hang over the back are listed variations of a Labrador per the AKC. This means that it is more an aesthetic preference for the dog breed standard than tracking health risks for dogs. Straightening a curly tail is impossible without unnecessary surgery. Attempting this can cause severe issues with the tail should it not go as planned. Legal Actions If you have purchased your Labrador because you thought it was purebred or full-blooded, you may have a cause for action. It would likely be a breach of contract as the agreement was that the seller was supposed to supply a purebred dog breed as agreed upon. You should keep all copies of any correspondence of the advertisement or seller communication, you should keep it. If the Labrador is described in terms such as purebred, then the agreement is not for a dog with other breeds mixed into it. If the contract was oral, it might be harder to win legally due to a lack of proof. Limber Tail Dogs can have a condition called Limber Tail which can mean the tail is limp or drooping. This condition will indicate that although the tail may be upright, the tip is drooping down. Limber tail is often the result of muscle sprain from activities like swimming. Other causes can be prolonged crate confinement and excessive exercise. Generally, the sprain will fix itself after a few days, but it is time to visit the vet if you notice no improvement after a week. Limber tail will likely cause your dog pain, and so anti-inflammatories can help. Always consult with your vet to determine an appropriate course of action, but medication to help reduce swelling has been shown to speed up recovery. Conclusion A curly tail on a Labrador is likely nothing to worry about health-wise. It serves important functions like communication, balance, and coordination. It comprises vertebrae, with larger bones at the base and smaller ones near the end. These individual segments are separated by soft discs — similar to those found in spinal columns — providing flexibility for movement. This natural curl helps them maneuver effortlessly through water or tight spaces during adventurous pursuits. Labrador puppy tails are built with strength and adaptability. It allows them to communicate emotions efficiently or swiftly navigate through tricky situations. Labrador Tail Types Labrador tails cannot be explicitly divided into different types. However, the tails may appear different from one dog to another. The reason for what they were bred can make a difference. Show dogs are bred to match the distinct breed standard. Dogs not bred for appearance can have a distinct look. A working lab can have a thinner, longer, shorter, or curly tail. Every other dog of this breed may not have the same thick tapering tail. Two dogs can have tails with slight variation. A black lab tail, a yellow lab tail, or a chocolate lab tail can be slightly different. It serves as a way for dogs to express themselves, whether happy, scared, or nervous. If a Labrador Retriever wags its tail rapidly from side to side with excitement when greeting you, it indicates happiness. If their tail is tucked between their legs while cowering away from something or someone, it shows that they are fearful or anxious. These dogs were originally bred for fishing and hunting. Their powerful tails were essential for diving into icy waters and retrieving fish from boats. Their tails were also selectively bred for balance, coordination, agility, and communication. The thick base provided strength while swimming or moving about in the water or on rough terrain. The thin tail tapering toward the tip enables nimble movements on land or water. When your Labrador wags its tail vigorously while jumping around, it reflects excitement. A slow tail wagging signifies uncertainty or confusion, while a tucked tail between the hind legs shows submission or anxiety. Dogs communicate with their entire body language, not just their tails alone. They use subtle cues such as ear movements, eye contact, posture, vocalizations, and tails to express feelings. Balance, Coordination, And Agility The thick base of their tail is a counterbalance when running or jumping. It allows them to make sharp turns and sudden stops easily. When swimming, the tapering shape of the tail helps generate thrust in the water. Ensuring your Labrador gets plenty of exercise and playtime keeps their tails happy and maintains good muscle tone. Swimming And Water Activities Labrador Retrievers love water, and their thick tail is a powerful rudder. The breed was originally developed to retrieve from water bodies, making it an integral part of their DNA. It provides balance while standing or moving on slippery surfaces like rocks or boats. This painful condition causes the tail to become limp and flaccid. It can occur suddenly, usually after intense physical activity like swimming or overexertion. Most cases of Limber Tail Syndrome resolve themselves within a few days. Supportive care like rest, heat therapy on the tail base using a warm washcloth , and anti-inflammatory medication help. Limber Tail Syndrome is not life-threatening but can be very uncomfortable for your dog. A wagging tail may look harmless, but it can be quite powerful and easily hit hard objects, causing injury. Fractures and dislocations are more common in dogs with short or thin tails. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and sometimes physical therapy. Mast cell tumors, including Labradors, are the most common type of tumor found in dogs. These tumors originate from white blood cells and can manifest differently depending on their location. If located near the base of the tail or spine, it may cause pain or discomfort. Regular visits to the veterinarian detect any potential health issues early on so they can be treated promptly. Provide exercise for proper circulation, and ensure adequate nutrition with supplements like fish oil or glucosamine. Keep the fur around the base of their tail trimmed to avoid matting or tangling. Use a dog-friendly shampoo to wash their tail when needed. Trim any long hairs on their tail using sharp scissors or clippers, careful not to cut too close to the skin. Check for any signs of injury, such as cuts or bruises, and seek veterinary care if necessary. Swimming, running, and playing fetch are all excellent ways to keep your dog active while promoting a healthy tail. Give your furry friend plenty of opportunities to swim in open water or a pool. Water activities help strengthen their powerful tails as they paddle through the water. Running on soft surfaces like grass, sand, or dirt keeps their joints healthy and reduces the risk of joint problems. It can affect their tails over time. A balanced and nutritious diet includes high-quality protein, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Fatty acids maintain healthy skin and dense coats, promoting healthy tails. Hydration is crucial for a happy tip-tapping tail! Provide clean water at all times so they remain hydrated throughout the day. The ideal Labrador tail should be thick at the base and gradually taper toward the tip, with no signs of kinks or knots. According to AKC breed standards, a wagging tail can indicate friendliness. But excessive wagging or stiffness can denote fear or aggression. Docking or altering their tails can cause unnecessary pain and discomfort, leading to long-term health issues. With proper care comes better communication through body language signals. Labrador tail is medium and not longer than the hock per breed standard. However, some tails can be different from the standard. However, a labrador tail does not curl up over its head. Yes, golden retrievers can have curled tails. This is not a breed standard, but it is not uncommon either. Some golden retrievers may have a slight curl in their tail, while others may have a more pronounced curl that goes all over their back. What is the otter tail on a Labrador? The otter tail in a labrador is a thick rounded appearance. The thick look comes from the thicker coat. The tail has a small c-shape, is pointed downward, and is fairly straight. What does a Labradors tail look like? Labradors usually have a thick tail base that tapers toward the tip. It is free from feathering and is medium in length. It is thick with a short and dense coat surrounding it and gives an otter-like appearance. What does a lab tail mean? A stiff lab tail held high reflects confidence and dominance. It means your labrador will not back down. A low tail tucked between the legs indicates fear. Labs have thick and sturdy bodies with broad heads and long otter-like tails. The tail helps them steer in the water and reflects their emotions. Labrador retrievers have about 15, hairs per square inch of skin. This means that a full-grown Labrador retriever with an average surface area of 20 square feet would have about million hairs on its body Why does my Lab puppy have a curly tail? A lab can have a curly tail due to genetic variations. It can also occur when a lab is bred with another dog breed with curly tails. The happy tail syndrome can also cause a curly tail. Genetic traits determine the specific tail shape of a dog and can vary from straight to curved or curled. This variation results from natural selection, historical environmental factors, and selective breeding practices. Labrador tail injuries Lab tails are thick and tapering, covered in the same dense hair as the rest of their bodies. Labrador tails are also practical, helping them to steer quickly through water in their original retrieving role! Some Labs may have shorter or thinner tails than average, which is considered a fault in show dogs. Happy Labrador puppies wag their tiny tails! The traditional Labrador Retriever tail is thick and gradually tapers towards the tip. Unlike some other retriever breeds, such as the Golden Retriever, Labradors have little to no feathering on their tails. Instead, their entire tail is covered in dense fur, like the rest of their body. However, some Labrador tails fall outside of this standard, being shorter, longer, or thinner than average. Instead, it follows their topline the line from their neck to tail. Giving them the overall balanced appearance that we know of this breed! Labradors can use their tails to help with swimming, as a powerful rudder. Labs communicate through their tail — like other dogs. Some Labrador tails curve upwards although not over their back , and others may be dead straight. Labrador Tail Types There are no real different Labrador tail types. But, Labrador tails may look slightly different from one dog to the next, depending on what they were bred for. For instance, Labs bred for show are bred to fit the strict breed standard. Dogs who are not specifically bred for appearance can differ a little more. So, you may find working Labs with thinner tails, shorter or longer tails than average, and even tails that curve upwards a little more than you expect. Of course, many theorize that the otter tail shape also helps Labs with their working ability. Some may have a thinner tail, or one that does not taper so gradually. Lab Tail Colors These variations can happen in Labs of any color. Labrador Tail Injuries It is possible for your Labrador to injure their tail. The most common problem that affects Labrador tails is limber tail. Other than limber tail, this condition is also called water tail, swimmer tail, limp tail, and more. If your Lab has limber tail, their tail will hang lifelessly, or may jut out a little before hanging limp. But, fortunately, there are ways to help a Lab suffering from limber tail. Potential risk factors for limber tail include swimming, high latitudes, and even genetic predisposition. If your Lab seems to be suffering with limber tail, you should take them to your veterinarian straight away. In the first 24 hours, anti-inflammatories can be given to shorten the length of the flare up. And, your vet will be able to give your Lab dog-safe pain relief, if nothing else. This could take anywhere from a few days to over a week. Do you have a Labrador with the popular, classic otter tail? Has your hard-working retriever ever suffered from limber tail? Find Out More.

I met Alicia through a friend, and she really helped me narrow down our decision, answering all my questions, with all things puppy new doggie Mom here We are so happy with Harlow, she is a micro Bernedoodle that loves to snuggle: I never knew how deeply we would fall in love, and so over the moon, to give our 3 children, the chance to experience this kind of unconditional, furry love! Thank you so much Alicia, Lexi, and Emme, and the Marshall family, for our sweet blessing. I came across Highfalutin Furry Babies, I found that no other breeder could compare to the level of love Alicia and Lexi put into their program!! She is constantly Giving Back, with all these amazing donations I think i cry almost every time I see a puppy donated, it absolutely warms my heart. I am more than honored to be able to support Alicia and Lexi!! It was so worth the wait just like everyone of the Highfalutin members told me it would be. I trusted them and put my faith into the program! One year later from the time I committed to a Highfalutin furry baby my puppy was hand delivered to me personally by Alicia. She spent two hours with us going over all kinds of information and details! Just what I was looking for, a very thorough breeder! It is now one week of having the puppy Home. He is an absolute joy! So smart! He knows a few commands already and he is just a few days shy of 10 weeks. He loves to snuggle with his Momma. Alicia we love you and your family and what you stand for. There are no words to express how grateful we are for you making sure our Christmas miracle came true!! Love The Potrzuski Family! He has surpassed even my wildest expectations. This is not because I enjoy talking about myself, but because it will show you how even the most clueless and inexperienced person in the world with dogs who defies all expectations about a dog owner fall in love with a HFFB baby. I'm 38 years old, single, never been married, no kids. Live in Los Angeles and work in the entertainment industry. The epitome of a bachelor. I've never had a dog before ever as a child. Instantly, I fell in love, but I knew having a dog that large would be tough. When a close family friend recommended Alicia and a bernedoodle, I did my research and realized my dream could become a reality. And then it happened. My Oscar moved to LA June 26th. He received additional training and after only two weeks, he is sleeping through the night, following commands including sit, wait, fetch, heel, etc and he is so excited to see me that he acts like he won Powerball. No one except my mother when I was an infant has ever felt this way about me haha! Oscar loves his crate, takes treats from neighbors and friends and smiles, eats regularly, enjoys his toys and being petted, and every single person in my social circle either loves him after meeting him or is dying to meet him. If I can do this as someone with ZERO dog experience, it will be a walk in the park for you and your family. Now to Alicia. Wow where do I even start: Alicia is one of the most caring and loving people I have ever met. She truly adores animals and treats them like her own children. They live in the home with her. Her passion jumps off the page and it makes a huge difference in the temperament of Oscar. Everything Alicia does is top-notch. From the amazing private support group on Facebook to the instructive breeding information to the recommendations of food, toys, and all equipment, she makes it so you absolutely cannot fail as a dog parent. Most of the dogs have their own Instagram pages and we all follow and support each other. In a time of divisiveness in our country, Alicia and her community provides a rare dose of positive energy that brings people so much happiness. In addition, I have made friends in Los Angeles with the parents of Oscar's siblings and Oscar's cousin and we have had play dates already! I message the mom of Oscar's brother Glover who lives in Boston a few times a week. We all compare notes and try to do better everyday and become better dog parents. Every single opportunity is given to the furry baby or the child to succeed. Alicia is like the principal of the school who makes the magic happen. But there are also guardians like Kamal and Natalie who are equally amazing who volunteer their time to make this community possible. Everything is buttoned up. There's nothing like it. Thanks for reading this long review, but I can't say enough about Alicia and Highfalutin. If you are just looking for a dog, HFFB might not be the right fit. Initially wanting a boy, especially after losing our Winston, we were surprised and delighted when Alicia mentioned a girl. Piper was worth the wait! She is always happy, gentle, sweet natured, funny and just blends in with our family perfectly. Thank you Marshall family for an amazing dog! We spent years researching doodle breeds and breeders, and I never felt more confident throughout our research as I did once I found Highfalutin Furry Babies. As soon as we put our deposit down and joined the waiting list, we felt like a part of the family. Alicia, Lexie and Emme have built a wonderful community of families who are ready and able to support whenever and however needed. We waited a year for our Stevie Ray and, boy, was he worth the wait. Stevie slept through the night after just two nights at home, was near potty trained at only three months and is the star student in his puppy class. We are so in love with Stevie Ray, and we have Alicia to thank for bringing him into our lives. We cannot thank the Marshall family enough. Best decision of our lives! We had been on the waitlist and waited for the perfect baby! Alicia asked me a battery of questions as to what size, gender, coloring I wanted. Lucy was the exact match. I was concerned how my new puppy would get to my home. Alicia and her wonderful daughters flew in from Florida and hand delivered my precious new baby! Alicia stayed with us for a few days and made sure we were all compatible. Lucy is perfect! I am so impressed with her and give Alicia credit for her breeding ability and care. Not only is Lucy perfectly marked for a tricolored Bernedoodle, her temperament is also wonderful. He is truly perfect in every way. Alicia was so helpful during the whole process. Giving us updates and sharing health information on his growth. When Alicia brought him, she came ready with so much helpful information and lots of great tips, all wrapped up in his very own binder. My fiance and I cannot say enough amazing things about Highfalutin and Alicia. We feel absolutely blessed to be counted among her families and even more special to get to care for and love Ernie every day. It has been the best two months of my life. Brooklyn Poppy is sweet, smart, funny, and beautiful! She was almost potty trained after two short weeks, she knew basic commands at three months old, and loves all people and dogs to a fault. Even after bringing home our puppy, Alicia and the Highfalutin family still offer plenty of support for newbies like me. They have spoiled me with giving me the greatest puppy ever. Highfalutin Furry Babies is the only place I will be going for future dogs. We're so happy to be a part of their family with our puppy Indie, a standard bernedoodle. She is the sweetest thing, and was well worth the wait. Don't be discouraged by the waiting list, it just gives you time to learn more, fall in love, and really understand what it is you want from your pup. We learned about bernedoodles while researching Berners and other sennenhund breeds and fell in love. Then, as luck would have it another dog from that same litter Daisy lives in the town next to us, so we got to meet her and her family, and were just head over heels. After meeting two of Alicia's dogs and the wonderful families they come from we were all-in, especially considering the worry-free nature of the hand delivery Just wait, it's a day you'll never forget, and as a bonus you get to hang out with Alicia for a few hours! Alicia is great at understanding your situation, and pairing you up with the right puppy for you and your life. After submitting the deposit back in early summer of , we waited in anxious anticipation as we climbed the list. A lot changes in a year, and that's why the wait is awesome. But in the year we waited note: we were offered several puppies well before then, but the timing wasn't right , we bought a house and with more room, we came around to the idea of a smaller standard F1 bernedoodle like Indie. We really wanted a pup that had Willow the bernese as a mom, as her other puppies seemed perfect for our lifestyle and this was our chance to get her, and we're so glad we did. The people and families who belong to HFFB are wonderful, and having them as a group is an amazing resource. The support you get from Alicia and her team is beyond expectation. She's been there for us at every turn. Even getting us a little help and consult with potty training stuff which helped immediately. She's so sweet and genuine, and you can tell how much she loves these dogs and the people who make their forever-homes. We're surrounded by dogs here, and I don't know where any of them came from because that's not a thing people seem to talk about. But, everyone here knows that Indie is from HFFB; it's a thing that matters because Alicia and Lexie make it matter by caring and doing the things they do. It's a point of pride to be part of it and know that the dogs and families are all out there sharing their experiences with each other. Alicia not only went out of her way to travel to Tampa to introduce us to our baby, Jude, a Tri-Color Bernedoodle, while I was travelling for work, but she also flew to New Orleans to hand deliver Jude and came to our home with a very thorough packet with any and all information we will need as we raise our baby. We thoroughly enjoyed our time working with Alicia, and I know her and her family as truly loving and trustworthy. Beyond that, she somehow balances an impressive deluge of incoming messages and she is a problem solver who is always able to address complex issues with strategy and confidence. Her knowledge and expertise in breeding and raising Bernedoodles is obviously the hugest advantage of the Highfalutin experience. Jude came with all his shots, he was chipped, and he was trained! Her dogs are clearly doused with love as they grow to be old enough to come home…. Along with her undeniably perfect dogs, Alicia was an absolute joy to work with. You could tell he had been loved from birth and was exactly the type of puppy we discussed with Alicia…smart, full of energy with a great temperament always wanting to be around people. I cannot tell you how many compliments we get and how often we get stopped to talk about him. Lastly, one cannot underestimate the power of the HFFB network. Alicia worked tirelessly to find a safe home for Geddy B and I am happy to say he is living the life with my aunt and uncle and their big family getting all the attention he deserves. We are lucky to be part of this network and to have a connection with someone who cares as much as Alicia and her family. She instantly bonded with our family and has become an inseparable playmate for our 16 month old Bernedoodle. We highly recommend Highfalutin Furry Babies and will not consider any other breeder for our next Bernedoodle. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. Temperament One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. Environment If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Exercises Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Grooming Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. What is a Red Golden Retriever? While Red Golden Retrievers can grow as big as a normal golden retriever, they are often smaller than most normal golden retrievers. Red Golden Retrievers are very similar to Golden Retrievers in many ways. The main difference besides their coat color is their energy levels. Red Retrievers were bred to aid in hunting birds and are known to be more athletic than standard Goldens. They need to be exercised more often to get all of their energy out. We stand by our pups, which is why we work alongside licensed veterinarians to ensure that our puppies are healthy and always up to date on their deworming and vaccination protocols. We also offer a 2-year genetic health guarantee on all of our puppies. That way, you can rest easy knowing your puppy is healthy and free from genetic defects and congenital diseases. Our mission is dedicated to connecting healthy, beautiful puppies with their forever families. Because their temperament is friendly, energetic, and patient. These pups are known for being loyal, intelligent, and devoted. Due to their higher energy levels they were bred to hunt after all , they do best with active families where they can get a lot of attention and are great with children. Luckily Red Retrievers and Goldens alike are known for their soft mouths since they were bred to hunt birds. The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In other words, all Golden Retriever subtypes including the English Cream Golden Retriever subtype , are members of the same family, or breed. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Red Goldens more expensive? Because of their elegant red coats and rarity, Red Goldens can be more expensive than certain other subtypes of Golden Retriever. Both are very similar in temperament, friendliness, socialness, health, and looks. They differ most in coat color, size, and energy. They are typically the smallest puppies of the litter and are more athletic meaning more energy to burn! How big is a full-grown Red Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Red Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. However, it is worth noting that because the Red Goldens often have a coat that is slightly shorter than typical Goldens, some owners claim they shed less overall. Problem solved! Are Red Golden Retrievers aggressive? The good news is— no, Red Golden Retrievers are not aggressive dogs by nature even with their higher energy levels. They still have the same sweet, calm, and lovable disposition which makes them a fantastic addition to any family to give plenty of attention to everyone including yours. Are Red Goldens more calm? Usually not, when compared to other subtypes of Golden Retrievers. While Red Golden Retrievers are much alike to Golden Retrievers with their high patience levels, they are known to have more energy. Are Red Golden Retrievers Rare? The gene manifests relatively rarely compared to other colors. Galen has been connecting quality Golden Retriever breeders with loving families since and is the founder of My Golden Retriever Puppies. He and his wife have four children and love spending time together, traveling lived oversees for 4 years , enjoying the outdoors and connecting Golden families. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Yet, cream is still a popular color in these dogs. To call these dogs anything but a Golden Retriever is wrong, though they get mistaken for Labradors all the time. The coat color of cream Golden Retrievers looks like an off-white. In other words, they might not accept cream Golden Retrievers in the show ring. They have the same great personality as any other Golden Retriever. In your specific country, they may be slightly more rare than elsewhere. For instance, cream Golden Retrievers generally have a thinner coat, so you may experience slightly less hair around the home. However, they shed just as much. Physically, the cream variations have rounder eyes with a stockier build. And similar to a cream colored Golden Retriever, the red variation is not recognized by the American Kennel Club and thus, not permitted to compete at shows. This dark red color can vary quite a bit from dog to dog. However, most of the top historians and researchers suspect that these red dogs originated from Ireland. A number of historians believe that breeders were able to achieve this color by crossbreeding standard Golden Retrievers with the Irish Setter , thus getting this magnificent mahogany color. It makes a lot of sense because the Irish Setter has this same hue of color. In addition, these red colored Goldens have a lot of physical features that resemble that of an Irish Setter. At least, more than a typical standard Golden. However, there are a few key differences in appearance — other than the coat color. Just like with the cream Golden Retrievers, these dogs tend to have shorter hair. Their hair can sometimes be straighter too — almost like a Labrador Retriever. You can also expect these dogs to have less feathering on the legs and tail. However, it can vary because there is no official breed standard with Red Golden Retrievers. Furthermore, Red Golden Retrievers also have a leaner and more compact frame than the standard Golden Retriever. As such, you are able to competitively show these dogs at AKC shows. And despite the dark color, you still get the lively energy, cheerful attitude and friendliness of these dogs. A good way to gauge how dark they will get is by looking at the color of the ears. Literally the only difference is the darker coat color, which is perfectly fine. In fact, many owners think this color is the most stunning of them all. For the most part, I agree with them. They may be the second most popular Goldens. The color is difficult to differentiate for the average person. However, dog enthusiasts and breeders will tell you that this color is somewhere between the standard classic gold and cream color variations of these dogs. The light Golden Retriever may be the second most common color for Golden Retrievers — second only to the standard gold. The light variation, like with the dark, also has the same temperament as any other Golden Retrievers. Most owners raise them because of their personalities, before appearance. What else do you need in a family dog and companion? Though they do shed, especially during peak seasons, Golden Retrievers are relatively low maintenance — making them great for all types of owners. Like with most large dogs, they still require a moderate amount of physical activity on the daily basis. They are some of the best dogs in the world. The only decision you need to make is what color you want. Which color of the Golden Retriever do you like the best? And if you have on already, which color do you think your dog is? Leave a comment below! Posts you may like:. In fact, they have a few different coat colors although not all of them are acceptable in traditional dog shows. Do not fall for these traps. Standard Golden Retriever Colors There are five typical Golden Retriever Colors, although these can be mixed and matched into different combinations. Standard Golden Retrievers Image Credit: lecreusois, Pixabay This is probably the first thing that comes to mind when picturing a Golden Retriever color. Be sure to give them a good proper brushing at least twice a week to keep their golden coats shining their best. Another key to keeping their coats at their peak condition is to ensure that your Golden maintains a healthy diet full of Omega-3s. They fall between the cream Golden Retrievers and the standards on the color spectrum. This is the second variety of Golden Retriever color that is accepted by International Kennel Clubs for show. These are often among the most striking of Goldens with their deep gold coats. One thing to note about their color is that while they do bear a close semblance to the Red Golden Retriever—more on them later—they lack the amber or red hues found on the former. Their golden coat is a pure gold color just deeper than that of the standard variation. Often, the ears will be darker than the rest of the coat, and a good sign of how dark these pups will get as they mature. But there are also some different peculiarities about this color when compared to the rest. Cream Colored Retrievers normally have a thinner coat than their darker-haired relatives. However, they shed just as much. However, these are just shameless marketing tactics. The origin of this breed is believed to come from Ireland where standard Golden Retrievers were crossbred with Irish Setters. This theory does make sense as the dogs are generally leaner and more compact than other Golden Retrievers. They also have less feathering around their legs and tail. However, that may change in the future. Golden Retrievers shed a lot , especially during peak seasons. Your Golden may require two or three brushings a week when they start blowing their coat. And the best way to do this is with a slicker brush. A slicker brush is normally a wide, rectangular brush with firm wire bristles. These are absolutely perfect for grooming Golden Retrievers as the brush is designed to easily pull out tangles without causing any damage to their skin. Conclusion There are 5 true Golden Retriever colors, each of which shares the same wonderful, loving temperament. For more info, check out:. Life Span Did You Know? They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Everyone wanted one and I will not lie, I too considered getting one of these adorable little buddies. So what is it about them that makes them so unique? A white pug can obtain this coloring in one of three main ways. The first is leucism, where the melanin production is lower than normal. The second is albinism, where there is no melanin produced at all. Finally, it could be due to mixed breeding with breeds that have white coloring genes, in which case it is technically not a pure pug. In the sections below, we shall take a look at the difference between the two main causes of white coloring in pugs which are albinism and leucism. That way if you decide to get one you know exactly what to expect. However, they are fundamentally different in terms of everything from the cause to the manifestation. Albinism In Pugs Albinism in pugs is a result of genetic mutation in the genes responsible for producing melanin. The result is an albino pug with an absolute lack of melanin. This covers everything from the fur and eyes to blood vessels. With albinism, the fur on the pug will be completely white in color but maintains the other coat features of the parent. Other surfaces like the paw pads, nose, and rim around the eyes take on more of a pale pink hue. Finally, the lack of pigmentation results in blue or even translucent eyes. This trait is recessive in nature. This means that both parents need to either be albinos or carriers of the gene for it to manifest in the pug. For this reason, albino pugs are incredibly rare. Leucism In Pugs A leucistic pug on the other hand gets its white coloring from a different genetic mutation affecting pigmentation. This affects melanin formation at a DNA level. Unlike albinism which causes total lack of pigmentation, a leucistic pug will have melanin on their irises, paw pads, noses, and even blood vessels. They will appear a darker shade of blue or even brown for the eyes and dark pink for the rest of the surfaces. However, the fur, much like in albinism, is completely lacking in melanin and results in white coloring all over the body from the root to the shaft. Are White Pugs Healthy? Image from Instagram: paula. If it is as a result of leucism, then the pug will only have the regular health issues that other pugs suffer. However, if the white fur is due to albinism, there are some issues associated with the total lack of melanin. Let us take a closer look at all of these. It is unfortunately incurable with most affected doggies having to be put down. Stenotic Nares This is a condition characterized by blockage of nasal airways. It is a result of the brachycephalic facial structure that the dog has and often results in major difficulties breathing. Obesity Pugs have a really big appetite. They are also extremely lazy. This is not a good combination and if you do not watch what you feed the doggie, they may end up being obese. Allergies Pugs are prone to a number of allergies. These include allergic dermatitis from things like dust mites, pollen, and even grass. They also often suffer from food allergies ranging from gluten intolerance to meat allergies. It is, therefore, best to minimize outdoor time with albino pugs. Skin Cancer White dogs are generally at a greater risk of developing skin cancer but none are as vulnerable as those with albinism. As with sunburns, one of the best ways to protect your white pug is by minimizing their exposure by any means necessary. Pugs in general need a lot of tender loving care. However, with their additional special needs it is safe to say that white pugs need a little extra attention and effort. Here are 4 key ways you could give your pretty pooch a happy home and a chance to live out their life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Minimize Direct Sun Exposure As earlier stated, white pugs are prone to a lot of sun-related issues from skin cancer to photophobia. Part of raising one of these beauties is keeping them out of the sun as much as possible. And if you must go out in them, invest in doggy clothes that offer some degree of protection through coverage. Invest In Regular Pet Visits A lot of the terminal health issues faced by white pugs may be dealt with better if they are caught early. Therefore, find and stick to a vet visit schedule so you do not find out something important when it is too late. Feed The Doggy The Right Food White pugs are very likely to become overweight so what and how much you feed them is very important. For the former, we recommend the Pet Plate fresh food subscription service. Find Fun, But Simple Exercises White pugs not only do not like to exercise but are also put at risk whenever they go out. It is therefore up to you to find fun ways to keep them physically and mentally stimulated for their own sake. Do White Pugs Shed? Grooming Tips for Leucistic Vs Albino Pugs There is a common misconception about white pugs that paints them as heavier shedders than regular pugs. This is simply not the case. What happens is that their fur, being light-colored and medium length, is easier to spot on surfaces. There is also no difference between shedding patterns for leucistic and albino pugs as long as the coat is healthy. However, there is no denying the fact that white pugs, like any other pug, do shed. You will therefore have to go out of your way to minimize this. In this case, brushing is the most important grooming habit. This helps by deshedding the already loose fur and therefore prevents it from falling off all over your home. Another crucial grooming practice when raising a white pug is regular washing. Due to their white fur, they tend to show dirt and grime very easily. However, this does not mean you wash them too often as their skin and fur need the natural oils on them for protection. It is, therefore, best to simply go with a one to two monthly washing schedule. In the meantime, you could use doggy wipes to get rid of any stains or messes on their fur. Temperament Of White Pugs Image from Instagram: matildaemilyheidi3pugs There are subtle differences between the temperament of a regular pug and a white one but they are very similar for the most part. For some perspective, here are the most important personality traits you may encounter. Strong-Willed This is just a really nice way of saying that white pugs are stubborn. If they are not trained early, they have very little inclination towards obedience and just love getting into mischief. Clingy White pugs have what is affectionately referred to as Velcro personalities. They will identify a member of the family and form what can only be described as an obsessive bond. Eager To Please This is particularly the case when they are younger and it definitely makes life a lot easier when it comes to training. You just need an effective way to show your approval. Clever White pugs are also very smart dogs. They are also very intuitively caring which makes them ideal for families with children. Playful These doggies are predominantly calm and just like to either sleep or sit back and watch the world go by. However, they have a silly and playful side that is very fun to watch. Lazy White pugs love nothing more than sleeping and relaxing in general. They only ever get bursts of energy for exercise when they are in their playful moods. Even Tempered They are very docile and hardly ever cause trouble whether it is with another dog, a child, or even strangers in your home. If your pug is white due to albinism, you also have to factor in special care needs and additional health bills that come with the mutation. How Much Are Albino Pugs? Typically, it depends on where you get the pug. If you go for shelter adoptions, you may not have to pay as much. The problem is that this is a game of chance and you might not get an albino pug very easily. Do Pugs Have Blue Eyes? A pug can have blue eyes as a result of low levels of melanin. This makes them more prone to issues like photophobia due to inadequate protection of inner eye structures from UV rays from the sun. These lovable pups are wildly popular and the perfect match for many families. They come in a wide variety of colors and coats, including all white—which is relatively rare. Here are just a few white Pugs whose humans share their lives on Instagram. Sometimes, he gets both! Sugar Sugar is a five-year-old white Pug who has an all-black Pug sister named Pepper! Why the Controversy? White Pugs are usually the result of a genetic mutation, but some breeders have attempted to produce white Pugs through selectively breeding dogs with genetic predispositions for albinism and leucism. Albinism is an inherited disorder that affects melanin production. Pugs with albinism produce zero melanin, and will have fully white fur, pale pink skin, and pale pinkish eyes. Leucism reduces but does not fully eliminate melanin production, and leucistic Pugs will typically have white or cream fur and light blue or brown eyes. Albinism and in some cases, leucism can cause vision impairments and blindness, sun sensitivity, and increased susceptibility to certain cancers. When breeders pair dogs that carry the genetic markers for albinism, they risk producing puppies with serious health issues and special needs that require additional care both financially and physically from their families. The controversy is based purely on the fact that it is unethical to purposefully produce dogs that are likely to have physical disabilities and health risks. Breeders eager to make profits prey on unsuspecting dog lovers and use the power of scarcity and exoticism to sell white Pugs. Unfortunately, many of these pugs find themselves in homes that are not prepared to support their special needs, putting them at risk of abandonment and neglect. White Pug Basic Info White Pugs are purebred Pugs displaying a specific phenotype of a genetic mutation, and will share all the same general characteristics of typical fawn and black Pugs. Here are some of the basics about this breed. In truth, white Pugs are typically albino or leucistic, though some may be mixed breed dogs whose parentage includes breeds known to typically have white coats. But as the breed was bred, these were seen as desirable characteristics and so they were brought forward to what the modern day Pug looks like. White Pugs can be bred, and their coloration is always a genetic mutation. White purebred Pugs are always albino or leucistic, and there is no evidence to suggest that any reputable breeders have managed to produce white Pugs without the albino or leucistic gene. Pugs are outgoing, goofy, stubborn, and sensitive. White Pugs, who are prone to vision problems may have additional needs due to their special needs. White Pug Size Purebred Pugs are typically inches tall, and should weigh between pounds. White Pug Health Pugs are brachycephalic, meaning they have short, squashed faces. The squashed-face look is a purposeful aesthetic choice developed over decades of careful selective breeding. Keeping their coats clean White Pug Genetics There are a small handful of special genetic recipes which can cause dogs to have white coats. One is the white spotting series of genes. The white spotting genes cause patches of white — which can be small, or so large they cover the entire body. None of the white spotting genes naturally occur in the Pug breed. But they can be introduced by outcrossing with other breeds. Another gene which causes white fur is the recessive gene for albinism. Different genes cause albinism in different breeds. The gene which causes albinism in Pugs is recessive. White Pug Temperament The temperament of a white coated Pug will depend upon how they came to be white. A purebred Pug with a very pale fawn coat is likely to be the closest match to these qualities. However, breeding for color can have pitfalls. Prioritising color over temperament means that character flaws might be passed on, as a trade off for achieving a paler coat. For example, a breeder might overlook a history of severe separation anxiety. What About Albinos and Mixes? A purebred albino Pug should, in theory, also have a very typically Pug-like personality. Finally, Pug-mix dogs with white spotting genes will have a personality that combines elements of the Pug, and other dogs in their family tree. White Pug Health Sadly, the Pug breed is notable for its overall poor health. A white Pug will share these issues. In the region of two thirds have painful hip deformities caused by either hip dysplasia or Legg-Perthes disease. About two thirds of Pugs also suffer from elbow dysplasia. The extreme flattening of their face puts them at high risk of breathing difficulties and damage to their corneas. Their screw tail is linked to spinal deformities and spina bifida type diseases. Further complications of being white If a breeder prioritises choosing a sire and dam by their colors, and compromises on their health in order to achieve light colored puppies, then the overall health of the puppies can decline even further. Albinism, meanwhile, is linked to increased light sensitivity, and higher risk of skin cancer. Which can make them partially or completely blind. This can have a knock-on effect on their temperament, which might be more cautious or easily startled. The health of Pug crosses will depend on both the overall health of their Pug parent, and the health of their other ancestors. For example, creating white dogs by deliberately introducing the Extreme White gene from the white spotting series is linked to increased hereditary deafness and hearing loss too. However, crossing Pugs with dogs breeds that have a healthier body structure may also result in a puppy which is healthier overall than a purebred Pug. White Pug Grooming All Pugs need careful daily attention to their grooming , and the palest colored Pugs even more so. Pugs are very prone to trouble with their anal glands. So to avoid leakages, or explosive squirting of anal fluids when you least expect it, you may need to pay your vet to empty them every few weeks. Or learn how to do it yourself. The wrinkles on their faces create warm, humid creases which are an ideal breeding ground for fungal and bacterial infections. So they need to be gently cleaned every day. In white Pugs this makes their face more prone to tear staining as well. Tear stains are reddish brown marks around the eyes caused by porphyrin in the tears. Your White Pug White Pugs are an unusual color that falls outside of the breed standard. Sadly, due to the many health problems affecting Pugs, which seriously compromise their welfare, we cannot recommend them as pets. When white Pugs are created by selective breeding for pale fawn coats, these health problems are likely to be made even worse. Albino Pugs have extra health problems caused by their albinism. White Pugs created by crossing with other breeds may not have the same temperament as purebred Pugs. But they are the most likely to be healthier. Conclusion Origin and Physical Appearance The white-colored pug is a result of selective breeding. The American Kennel Club mentions only two varieties that is black and fawn and does not certify white one, as it is crossbred. These are often confused with the albino pug due to their coat color. These have a pure white coat with a dark muzzle on their neck. Breeders tend to charge more for designer dogs and continue to crossbreed due to their demand because it is a distinct color not possessed by all. Rarity These are extremely rare, and I am sure you must have spotted one in pictures only if you have ever seen them. A Controversial Breed? Yes, you heard it right. This is a controversial breed due to its origin. Interesting Fact There is a famous white pug, named Marshmallow, you can find him all over the internet. It looks so adorable and angelic that I am sure you will be mesmerized just by one look. Conclusion Despite being a controversial variety, these are still in demand, so breeders continue breeding. Post navigation. They originated in China, where, in ancient times, small, flat-faced dogs were held in high esteem by the imperial family. They spent their lives in the lap of luxury as companion dogs, but some lived in monasteries with Tibetan monks. Pugs were only found in Japan and Russia until the 16th century when they were first imported into Europe by Dutch traders. In Europe, they remained as popular with the royals as they had been in Asia. How White Pugs Gained Popularity White Pugs are pretty uncommon and have seemingly been popularized mostly in recent times, controversially, by unethical breeders who sometimes capitalize on breeding albinos and marketing them as rare. However, Pugs as a breed have been popular for a very long time, beginning when they were lapdogs for Chinese royalty. From there, they headed over to Japan and Russia, then Europe, where more royals fell in love with them! Monarchs who have kept Pugs include Queen Victoria and Prince William the Silent, the latter being responsible for making the breed popular in Britain when he visited with his Pug collection. In , the Pug became the mascot for a Freemason society named—wait for it—the Order of the Pug thanks to their steadfast devotion and loyalty. The AKC recognized the Pug in , but only two colors are recognized as standard—fawn and black. Moreover, the AKC lists only black mask as a standard marking. Pure-bred Pugs can certainly be white, but this is considered a non-standard color, like the coat coloring pattern brindle. Albino Pugs Have Pink Pigmentation One way to tell the difference between a truly white Pug and an albino is to check for pink pigmentation around—not in—the eyes. An albino will have this pink pigmentation, whereas a white Pug will not. Albino dogs are typically blue-eyed, contrary to popular belief that their eyes are pink. Josephine Bonaparte Had Pet Pugs When the wife of Napolean was imprisoned, she communicated with her family via secret messages her pet Pug at the time would deliver. All Pugs make great pets thanks to their typically affectionate, easygoing, and cheerful nature. They adapt very well to apartment life and only require a moderate amount of daily exercise to keep them happy, and only need to be brushed weekly as a rule because their coats are easy to maintain. This makes Pugs a good fit for many kinds of owners with various living arrangements. One thing to be aware of is that Pugs are susceptible to certain health issues—particularly breathing issues—because they are brachycephalic dogs. For this reason, they quickly become uncomfortable in hot weather, as this exacerbates their breathing difficulties. The breeding of Pugs is a subject of controversy because of the discomfort they can suffer due to breathing problems and their wrinkly skin, which is vulnerable to skinfold dermatitis. If you have an albino Pug, they may also be prone to sunburn and skin cancer. Conclusion To recap, truly white Pugs , which come about as a result of leucism, are very rare and are distinct from albino Pugs, whose bodies do not produce melanin.
Nowadays, these precious little pooches are consistently ranked as one of the most popular toy breeds in the nation and are used in the creation of many designer dog breeds. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. The Earliest Records of White Toy Poodles in History Though the origin of the poodle has been debated between France and Germany, it has been well established that they most likely originated in Germany as water dogs. Their intelligence, athleticism, and obedient nature led breeders to produce smaller versions of the breed, which ultimately led to the Miniature Poodle, referred to as the toy poodle until .These smaller dogs were much easier to travel with and performed well in the circus for traveling venues. The white toy poodle that we know and love today did not exist until the 20th century when they bred the breed down even smaller. At first, many birth defects, health issues, and behavioral concerns were common in the toy poodles until more strict breeding practices were implemented. Eventually, the toy poodle was perfected into a healthy, well-rounded replica of the larger poodles. Their popularity soared even more from the s through the s when many prominent public figures openly owned and showed off their beloved poodles of all sizes. To this day, white toy poodles and many other coat colors and patterns remain a very popular companion breed thanks to their loving, devoted, and friendly nature. They are also extremely popular among allergy sufferers since they do not shed. Recognition of this popular breed was established shortly after these clubs were founded. While they may come in different sizes, each variety is held to the same breed standard. Image Credit: NicoPerez, Shutterstock 2. The Classic Poodle Haircut Serves a Purpose Rather than being a distinct fashion trend for the breed, the classic poodle cut is meant to increase functionality in the water. Fur grows to a certain point and then is shed, while hair continuously grows. Image Credit: Jagodka, Shutterstock 5. Many Designer Toy Breeds Are Created with Toy Poodles There are plenty of popular pedigreed toy breeds for small dog lovers to choose from, but designer hybrids breeds have been growing in popularity over the years to bring out the best traits of both parent breeds and fewer genetic health concerns. Toy poodles contribute to many designer breeds like the Cockapoo, Yorkipoo, Pomipoo, Schnoodle, Peekapoo, Shihpoo, and more. Granted, the toy poodles came a bit later when selective breeding took place to make a more size-friendly version of the breed. They Are High Maintenance It may come as no surprise that these elegant dogs may be a bit more on the high-maintenance side. Their unique coats require regular grooming to prevent tangles or mats. Unlike a lot of other breeds, poodles do not shed, and their hair will continue to grow, a grooming session once every 6 to 8 weeks is generally the recommendation. Smaller dogs are highly susceptible to dental disease and proper hygiene is an important preventative measure. Image Credit: Natallia Yaumenenka, Shutterstock 8. White Toy Poodles Are Incredibly Intelligent Poodles are a very intelligent breed, and you can surely expect that your tiny white toy poodle will be a smart cookie in a small package. These dogs are alert, responsive, lively, and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are very devoted to their owners and will genuinely enjoy the challenges and rewards of positive reinforcement training. Although they may not have the size of the standard poodle and were bred for companionship, they do have daily exercise requirements that need to be met. Owners should expect to set aside around 60 minutes per day for this breed to expend their energy and get in some needed physical and mental stimulation. They Can Make Great Watchdogs Toy poodles may be incredibly friendly, but they can be a bit territorial and may not come off that way with strangers. If a Toy Poodle hears anything unusual or suspects anything out of the ordinary, you can expect to be alerted. They are prone to excessive barking, so it is recommended to start training at an early age to get control. Toy poodles fit the criteria for being the ideal family dog. Unlike some other toy breeds that have less tolerance for young children, these dogs are known for being great with little ones. Of course, this is based on the individual dog, and one should always remain cautious with any dog around small children. Not only are they very loving and affectionate, but they are also small and easy to train. Their intelligence and eagerness to please were one of the reasons breeders selectively bred them into this tiny, toy size. While no dogs can technically be considered hypoallergenic, since poodles have hair as opposed to fur like most dogs, they are much more allergy-friendly and are extremely popular among dog lovers that suffer from allergies. These little tikes require a good amount of activity and mental stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored and destructive. They will need to get in their daily dose of activity to thrive. Something to consider is that white toy poodles are very attached to their family and do not do well when left alone. This is a breed that commonly suffers from separation anxiety. They have the potential to make wonderful pets if owners are prepared to meet their physical, mental, and higher-maintenance grooming needs. Image Credit: Jagodka, Shutterstock Conclusion The white toy poodle is one of the many coat color variations of the beloved toy poodle. The poodle breed is among the most popular dog breeds that have been around for centuries. They were selectively bred into three different recognized size varieties so that dog owners could enjoy the wonderful qualities of the breed in a size that suits them best. In the beginning, there was only Standard Poodle breed but later on, smaller Poodle types were developed by different breeders. The smaller Poodles became more popular because they were purebred as they developed from two Poodles. These dogs became first popular in Paris and the Toy Poodles were a popular choice of the elite class. For this reason, the Toy Poodle dog breed also became the national dog of France. Toy Poodles were also found in circuses very commonly because of their high intelligence. It was very easy to teach them new tricks and the public also praised them a lot. However, they are not similar and you can distinguish them by their eye colors. White Toy Poodles become the best family companions. Their height is a maximum of 10 inches and their coat is either harsh, curly, or dense. Origin: It is often believed that Poodles are associated with France because they were very popular there. However, some say that this breed first originated in Germany and then found its way to France where it became a very popular choice as a family companion. Several theories are used to explain the origin of Poodles. One of these theories explains that the ancestors of these dogs were Barbet from North Africa while the other says that they were from Asia and were used for herding. There is no proof as to which of these theories is the most accurate therefore the ancestry of these dogs is still unclear. As mentioned before, Toy Poodles were developed late after the Standard Poodles. Each of these Poodles had different roles, as the Standard Poodles were used to hunt while the Miniatures were used to sniff. The Toy Poodles were adorable so they were the best for a family pet. How this breed made its way to the United States is still unknown but all of these three versions were registered together by AKC in .What are the distinguishing qualities associated with white toy poodles? It is a friend that can be pretty sharp despite his little size. However, he is capable of much more. And in terms of his performance, he easily outperforms a significant number of other individuals who are members of his species. Even throughout the Middle Ages, some in the circus community were aware of his exceptional brilliance. The white toy Poodle dwarf, which is the smallest and healthiest form of the Poodle breed, is an excellent pick for a companion animal for the home. In addition to that, he is an excellent choice for a companion for unattached people of any age. He possesses an above-average learning capacity as well as a high level of social competency at the same time. The toy poodle is lively and eager for an intellectual challenge; all it needs is a wise spouse. Despite this, it has a high degree of adaptability, along with being user-friendly, and is an excellent fit for virtually any way of life. The only noticeable difference between White Toy Poodles and other Poodles is their white color. Otherwise, they have the same temperament, intelligence, and coat type as the other Poodles. The only thing that differentiates them is their color and size. They are adorable because of their white color, otherwise, they have the same characteristics and behavior as all other Poodles. Knowing these factors will make you fall in love with this amazing dog breed. White Toy Poodles are smarter than they look: One of the biggest misconceptions people have about White Toy Poodles is that they are only beautiful but not intelligent. However, this is wrong because Poodles are among the most intelligent dog breeds all over the world. Due to their intelligence, these dogs are a popular choice for people who are first-time dog owners. This is because they can easily adjust to families and they are easy to train as well. Toy Poodles can read the mood of their Owners: One of the most interesting things about this breed is that they can read the mood of their owners. These dogs are sensitive and they can easily detect any change in your mood or emotions. Due to this characteristic, these dogs are considered the best family pets because they can feel you. When you are happy, they will love to play with you, but when you are sad, they try to make you feel better; they cuddle and snuggle up. Also, there is one thing you need to understand. Any anger or harsh treatment from you will affect these dogs as they are more sensitive than any other dog breed. Therefore, you must be careful in your behavior and the way you are interacting with these dogs. But the hairs on their body resemble much the human hairs. It simply grows like human hair. Also, you will not find dog fur on your couches and sofas. But you have to brush their hair more frequently and trim them when required. They need as much exercise as a bigger Poodle: Due to the small size of these dogs, it is often considered that they do not need much exercise as a bigger Poodle does. However, the reality is the opposite. Toy Poodles need exercise as much as a bigger Poodle needs, otherwise, the dogs may show antsy behaviors just like the bigger breeds. Moreover, this kind of behavior can lead a Poodle to destructive acts. Their hairstyle was a Stylish trend: Back in the past, the trademark haircut of the White Toy Poodle was considered very classy but some people considered it silly too. Some naysayers said that with this hairstyle, the dogs looked less like competent pets and more like show dogs. However, the purpose of the haircut was not just fashion or modeling. The dogs had different roles to play. Their hairstyle helped them cross the water bodies and protect them from the chills of streams and rivers. Color Genetics: There are different color options that you will find in Toy poodles, but this color often changes with time as the dog grows older. Among all the colors, white is the most common color in Toy Poodles. However, the hair type is classified as black because these dogs have dark eyes and black noses. This feature makes them different from Albino Poodles. At present, the White color in Poodle is still a mystery because no gene is directly responsible for this color. The sad thing about Poodles is that they are prone to deafness because this problem is often associated with dog breeds of white color. General Appearance: The only thing that makes these Poodles different from others is their white color. They have a fanciful style, moreover, their coat is usually dense but sometimes it can become harsh because the hairs grow into curls. Due to their coat, and small size, these Poodles often give a cute teddy bear look. Average Size of White Toy Poodles: According to the breed standards, a Poodle is considered Toy if its maximum height is 10 inches or less than 10 inches. But a Poodle taller than that will be considered a Miniature Poodle. Moreover, the average weight of White Toy Poodles ranges between 6 to 9 pounds and not more than that. Intelligence, Behavior, and Traits of White Toy Poodles: The white color has nothing to do with the personality traits of this breed, so you can expect all Toy Poodles to behave in the same way. However, some factors play a major role such as the training and environment they are living in. These dogs are excellent family companions and they do very well with other pets at home. As a pet owner, you have to be responsible and take care of a lot of factors of their good emotional and mental state. They are the healthiest dogs and they would rarely fall into some illness. Make sure you are getting your dog from a trustful dog breeder who can provide you with all the information. This is because the health depends upon its parents and the breeding conditions. However, there are some diseases peculiar to this breed. Not all the members fall victim to these health problems but still, you should be aware of these if you are looking for a White Toy Poodle. Deafness Deafness is one of the most common health problems in dog breeds with white coloration. It can be a struggle for these dogs but they can still live normal lives and adapt to the conditions. The symptoms of hypothyroidism include the unexpected gain in weight and baldness also. Epilepsy: This is one of the most serious health conditions compared to all others and it is characterized by seizures. It can either be inherited or can be the result of some other illness. There is no cure for epilepsy however the seizures can be managed. Eye Disease: Eyes disease is another common health problem that Poodles are susceptible to. The most common of all these is Progressive Retinal Atrophy along with cataracts and glaucoma. White Toy Poodle Cost: Due to the high demand for White Toy Poodle, these dogs are a bit expensive so be prepared to make a huge expense. You need to be sure that you are ready for the initial cost. However, you can also adopt these dogs as it is a valid and cheaper option. Where can you buy a White Toy poodle? If you are willing to buy a White toy poodle pup, you should complete your research on-site at a breeder who is a member of one of the poodle breeding clubs and trains his dogs to meet the requirements outlined above prior to breeding them. Serious breeders will have no problem providing you with extensive information and will eagerly demonstrate the offspring, the parents, and anything else that is significant in a manner that is easy to understand. You might also try searching for a white toy poodle or a combination of the two at the local animal shelter. Here are some links where you can learn more and purchase a white Toy Poodle:. The breed is active and energetic Trainability Easy to train due to its intelligence Origin Though the Poodle is often associated with France, it is believed to have originated from Germany before finding its way to France where it became a distinct breed and family companion. It is also believed that the Poodle has many ancestors, all of whom are Waterdogs from Spain, Russia, Portuguese, French, Germany, etc. One suggests that the ancestor was the Barbet from North Africa. No one knows which theory is the most accurate so the ancestry remains unclear. What we do know is that the Poodle is an old breed, going back to Ancient Egyptian civilization. Paintings and artifacts confirm this. It is also generally accepted that the smaller Poodles were developed in the 15th century. The Miniature and Toy Poodles retained the traits and behaviors of the Standard version but with smaller sizes. Each type played different roles in places like Paris. While the Standard was used to hunt and the Miniature to sniff, the Toy Poodle was an adorable companion to many rich folks. Though it was rare after World War 2 ended, it soon rose to become one of the most popular dog breeds in the US. The only distinctive feature of the white Toy Poodle is the white color. Poodles share the same intelligence, temperament, and even coat type. The only differences are sizes and colors. Thus, what you get from other Poodles is what you should expect from the white Toy Poodle. They can read your mood These dog breeds are known to be sensitive and can detect any change of emotions. This ability adds to their good rep as a family companion. During sad days, they will snuggle up and make you feel better. This also means any harsh treatments or anger from you will affect them more than many other dog breeds. You should be careful how you interact with this breed. The hairstyle was once more than a stylish trend The trademark haircut of the White Poodle Toy and other Poodles is often considered too classy and silly by many people. To the naysayers, it makes the breed look more like show dogs and less like competent pets. Back when Poodles had roles to play, the haircut helped them cross water bodies while protecting them from the inevitable chill of many rivers and streams. It is smarter than it looks A big misconception people have about this dog breed is that it is all beauty, no brains. This is further enforced by silly jokes that make poodles be vain pets with no substance. The Poodle is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world, and all versions have this intelligence. Its intelligence makes it easy to train as it learns with ease. The hair simply grows like ours. It needs as much exercise as a bigger poodle Due to the size and role of companion dogs, the white Toy Poodle is often seen as a breed that may not require too much exercise. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Without exercise, this little breed shows the same antsy behavior as bigger breeds. It may lead to destructive acts. What separates it from others is the striking white color. The Toy Poodle, like other Poodles, has an elegant stride and a fanciful style. The coat is dense, sometimes harsh with hair that grows in curls. The small size and white color of this Poodle give it a cute, teddy bear look. Related: Color Genetics Poodles come in many colors, both standard and otherwise. Often, this color changes as they grow older. White is the most common color, although the hair type is often classified as black because White Poodles have black noses and dark eyes. This distinguishes them from Albino Poodles. Sadly, white Poodles are prone to deafness. Deafness is often associated with dog breeds with white coloration. According to generally accepted standards, this dog breed is termed Toy when it has a height that is less than 10 inches. Any Poodle taller than that officially belongs to the Miniature category. Their weight range falls between 6 to 9 pounds. Thus, you can expect that all Poodles will act the same way. Environment and training have a big role to play, however, so it is your responsibility to make sure your pet is well mannered. That said, there is a lot to consider if you want your pooch to be in a good mental and emotional state. The white Toy Poodle is loving and affectionate, always up for a snuggle with its owner. Its sensitivity makes it attune to your mood and it acts accordingly. This breed also likes being around people and is not the type of dog breed you should leave alone. A Toy Poodle wants to be around its family and partake in its activities. It is playful as well and known for its sense of humor. These dogs can keep you entertained for a long time with their clownish attitude. Expect brighter days with this adorable pup. However, you do need to be careful if you have small children. They tend to play roughly with dogs and may mistakenly injure a dog of small size. To be safe, this dog breed is better for a family with grown children. The caution aside, white Toy Poodles make good family dogs. White Toy Poodles usually have no issues with other dogs. They can live in peace with other canines and enjoy having other poodles around. You should also be careful having them around big dogs. Because of their low prey drive , they can also coexist with cats and other pets without being a threat. Are They Easy to Train? With their intelligence and love for people, this dog breed is trainable. Even new pet parents can attempt to teach these cute pooches good manners and better behaviors. They love to please their owners and are usually cooperative. Do not neglect training this breed or spoiling it because of its size and cuteness. Without training, it can become unbearable and act as the boss of the house. Train it with the same firmness as you would a big dog, but do not be harsh on your Toy Poodle. Take it on obedience training, house training, crate training, and socialization. Related: Complete Guide To Training Your Puppy Motivations and positive reinforcements will keep your pet more interested, but do not go overboard with treats. They are some of the healthiest dogs out there and rarely fall ill unless you got one that was poorly bred. You must get your pup from a breeder who is trustworthy and can provide all needed information on the health of the pup and its parents. Their healthy reputation notwithstanding, Toy Poodles are vulnerable to some illnesses that are peculiar to this breed. Symptoms include baldness and unexpected weight gain. Deafness: White Toy Poodles are especially vulnerable to loss of hearing. While this can be a struggle for the pet when it happens, deaf dogs can live normal lives and adapt to the setback. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is characterized by seizures, some more severe than others. It may be inherited or an offshoot of another illness. It has no cure but the seizures can be managed. The former is a result of an overload of cortisol. The latter is caused by a deficiency. Eye diseases: This dog breed is susceptible to different eye diseases. Others are cataracts and glaucoma. At this point, you may be eager to click on a website and order one white, cute Toy Poodle pup. However, you should be sure this dog breed can fit your lifestyle and expectations before you get it. It may be adorable and fluffy, but it can be a handful if it is incompatible with the way you live. Fortunately, the White Poodle Toy can be handled by any pet parent regardless of expertise. That said, you should be firm and committed to training this breed. Also, you should be cool with a pet that loves attention. Overly busy people who go out in the morning and come back late should go for a more independent dog breed. But if you work from home or retire, this breed can cure loneliness for real. They are suitable for both apartments and large spaces but need a lot of exercise to avoid getting bored and restless. The Hertzko slicker brush is an example of the right tool for your Toy Poodle. For the coat, we recommend a white and light coat enhancer Shampoo. It removes stains and brightens the color. The popularity of this color of Toy Poodle and Poodles in general has a huge effect on the price. Be prepared to make a huge expense to get one. You should make sure you have enough to take on the initial cost. Adoption is cheaper and a valid option. Where to buy a White Toy Poodle for Sale? With enough diligent research, you can purchase one with your laptop and a good Internet connection. Here are some sites you can access to purchase a white Toy Poodle:. White poodles are almost an icon of wealth and sophistication. While they are certainly elegant dogs, the personality of a white poodle is entirely unrelated to his or her color and appearance. Did you know that the clip was not originally meant for style, but to help a working dog do his job? Poodles were originally retrievers. The clip we see most often, the Continental, has the hindquarters, face, legs and base of the tail shaven, the coat left full on the chest, with pompoms at the ankles and sometimes the hips. This clip was designed to rid the dog of the heavy coat wherever possible, in order to make it easier for him to swim, while leaving fur over the major internal organs and the joints for insulation. Despite the image maintained by people who only see them from afar, poodles, no matter what their color, are cheerful, stable, and very sociable dogs. They are also among the most intelligent and easily trained of all breeds. They love to please, and are very sensitive to your approval and correction. They are completely home raised, and never kept in cages or kennels. This means your poodle will be forthright and friendly, completely socialized, and will have no trace of nervousness or hypersensitivity. Poodles Info.

PetzLover helps you to find your lovable pets to your home. Bishop hails from the streets of the south, where he was trying to make it on his own and chasing the wrong type of dames. However, his life took a turn when he ended up in a scary place called "The Shelter. Bishop weighs around 55 pounds, and he wants the ladies to know that it's all muscle. But don't let his muscles fool you, he's as sweet as sugar and listens better than most men. He has a mix of boxer, lab, and pitbull in him, but his handsome looks mostly come from his pitbull side. And yes, the ladies love his guns! Unfortunately, Bishop's previous foster home had cats, and they didn't get along well. So, he's currently back in boarding, where he enjoys the company of other dogs and a kind lady who takes him for walks and plays ball with him. Bishop absolutely loves his toys and chasing balls. He can get a bit "mouthy" when teased with toys, but he redirects nicely. He enjoys going for walks, but if he spots a bird, rabbit, or squirrel, he's off like Richard Simmons in a workout video. However, he responds well to correction. Bishop is a goofball who doesn't take much seriously, except for treats. Treats are serious business to him, and he'll do just about anything for one. He loves peanut butter in his kabobs but avoids rawhide to maintain his playboy figure. With his big smile and awesome personality, Bishop hopes to find his forever home. He's fully vetted, which means he's had his shots and is neutered. He is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms using a method called Slow Kill. Bishop is an easygoing, sweet, smart, happy, cuddly, and laid-back dude. He loves exercising, playing catch, and chasing balls, but he also enjoys relaxing and taking naps. He would be more than happy to lounge around in bed and watch TV with his humans. A perfect day for Bishop would involve the three C's: chasing balls , catch, and chill. He simply wants a best friend, someone to love him and give him the attention he deserves. A house would be preferable to an apartment, but he's open to trying out apartment life if it's a good fit. Bishop is currently in training now and is available for adoption or foster. To learn more about him and start the adoption process, reach outr to us. Wecan provide you with Bishop's portfolio and an application for his forever home. Bishop can't wait to give you wet kisses and steal all your blankets.
