S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. These tips will help you to make the right decision and find a happy home for your new addition. Start by finding the right breeder. You want to be sure that the breeder is reputable and is dedicated to raising healthy puppies. Buying puppies - Find the Right Breeder Buying your puppy from a reputable breeder is the best way to make sure it's healthy and well-bred. However, you must be able to tell the difference between responsible and irresponsible breeders. The most important thing is to avoid backyard breeders, who are often more concerned with making money than looking after the welfare of their animals. Good breeders want to know who they're selling their puppies to, and will spend time chatting with you over the phone and meeting you in person. They will also ask you lots of questions about your lifestyle, and what type of dog you are looking for. They should also provide you with information about how to care for your new pet, such as feeding instructions and exercise requirements. Decide on a Price The price of your puppy depends on a few factors: the breed, competition, and vet costs. In addition, your pet needs to be healthy and well-socialized before he can go home with someone. Moreover, your puppies should be properly spayed and neutered. Be sure to include photos of them with the price and your contact information in the ad. You can also post your fliers at pet stores, community bulletin boards, and feed stores. This way, you can attract loyal buyers who will come back to you for future purchases. You have to advertise your puppies and persuade potential buyers that they are well-rounded, cared for, and worth their investment. A good way to start is by advertising your puppies online. There are many sites that allow you to list your puppies including the Want Ad Digest! You should also include information about their personality and any special traits or skills they have. This helps buyers feel confident that your pups are in top-notch condition and will be able to live a long, healthy life. Meet the Buyers Before a puppy is sold, the breeder should complete a pre-adoption questionnaire with a home visit to verify that the new owner can provide the proper care and environment for a dog. The breeder should also provide the prospective owner with a health record, a contract and a two day supply of puppy food that is scheduled to be delivered to the home once the puppy has been adopted. A responsible breeder will go out of their way to match the perfect home with the ideal puppy. This is why many breeders avoid putting their puppies up for sale on online pet for sale websites such as Next Day Pets. Online shoppers looking for new and used cars for sale online or other big ticket items should check out our growing number of classified ads to find the right car, truck, dirt bike, puppy, boat, ATV, motorcycle and much more. Temperament — Labrador Retrievers are friendly, active, and outgoing either male or female. Both like affection and care. Males tend to be more fun and goofier, more attention-seeking, and more sociable with humans and other animals. Some guys could be more driven to win over their masters. Males are more likely to defend their families or their territories. What is Better about a Female Labrador? However, females may be less overt in their shows of affection, and they may assert their authority by pushing or prodding others. While female Labs are normally calm and gentle, they occasionally bite, especially when the other females are young and little. They are easy to train and mature faster than males. Who Should Get a Male Labrador? Males tend to be beefier and heavier, and because of this, their features and muscles are more attractive. People who like competing in dog shows might choose a male if the dog meets the qualifications. But be aware that they are hard to come by. The greatest dogs for first-time dog owners are male Labradors that live in homes with yards. They should always be able to engage with someone due to their ongoing desire for attention and assurance. Males require a lot of space to roam around since they often have larger bodies and a silly, enthusiastic disposition. Who Should Get a Female Labrador? Females are better for guardianship responsibilities and single people, but they also make wonderful family members. They can manage to live in a space as tiny as an apartment as long as they receive lots of daily walks and exercise. Additionally, their delicate features and modest build perform well in dog show contests. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Picking up a specific dog breed is easy but selecting between the sexes is something very tricky. Knowing about the pros and cons of both gender will make it easier for you to decide between them. Labrador Male vs Female: Pros and Cons Despite their similarities, one gender may have some advantages over the other. Pros and cons of female Labrador Knowing about the pros and cons of gender is highly recommended by dog experts. You can analyze whether the lab suits your lifestyle or not. Pros Female Labrador is active and loves to play around you. Relatively easy to train because of its energetic and observing nature. More protective than male Labradors and becomes easily suspicious of strangers. She is independent, which is loved by dog parents. She needs less maintenance. Female Labrador is less social. She does not show much affection and love to dog parents. She never puts effort into pleasing the owner. More caution is needed when she is around kids. Can have a high-pitched bark in most situations. Labrador may act stubborn and less motivated for food. If you want a great companion who is showering unconditional love on you, then you must go ahead with a male Labrador. However, if you are willing to adopt a guarding dog with a moody and independent nature, never asking for love, you must select a female Labrador. Differences between Male and Female Labradors 1. Size Size is a significant difference between male and female labs. Nothing new, male labs are slightly larger as compared to female dogs. If you want a giant and bossy Labrador , then adopt a male one. While on the other hand, if you want a normal-sized, independent, and self-caring pup, go ahead with a female Labrador. Gender is the only factor that directly affects the size of labs. Features Due to hormonal differences, gender shows changes in features. Male dogs are somehow rough when compared to female Labradors. Trainability Most experts say that female puppies are easy to train compared to male Labradors. In addition, female Labradors are more attentive so they learn each new behavior fast. People who are willing to raise a guarding dog are more biased toward female Labradors. Behavior Despite their cool and calm nature, male labs are aggressive when compared to female Labradors. As mentioned above, female labs are independent, and they are more independent. While on the other hand, male Labradors love to please their parents more than they care about themselves. Male Labradors keep demanding the lap of their owners while female Labradors never mind playing alone without asking for attention. So, by keeping all the behavioral facts in mind, select your Labrador accordingly. Reproduction behavior Last but not least, reproduction and the heat cycle behavior is another significant difference in male and female Labradors. As a result, both genders behave differently in their breeding season. Most female Labradors are attracted to male dogs when they are in the heat cycle. Female Lab secretes a liquid, which becomes the source to attract mates , and in the case of the indoor dog, she may feel pain. While on the other hand, the males run behind the female dogs and chase them whenever they want. Even some male labs do not wait for the breeding season to get attracted to the lady lab. Males and females both show aggression toward the other dogs soon after getting neutered. Proper training can make your lab behave well in this situation. Showing affection Male dogs are highly expressive and like to show their love and care for their parents. While on the other hand, the female lab likes to be left alone. Female Labrador loves their parents as males do, but females are less expressive than male labs. Treat you as if you should earn her love. Tend to show less affection. Will be happy for her human to come to her. More cautious around kids. Gets along well with male dogs. Tends to be less playful all the time. Slightly less food motivated except when pregnant. The male Labrador Retrievers tend to be more energetic and affectionate to their humans. They are slightly more dependent on their owners in comparison to their female counterparts. Male Labs are easier to please as they seem to be content just having family members around them. Meanwhile, the female Lab is deemed more independent and is less attached to their human owners. This is not to say that female Labs are not affectionate. If they are smothered with love, they will definitely reciprocate. Females, however, have a slight advantage when it comes to intelligence and trainability. Some studies show that female Labs mature earlier than male Labs and can be trained as early as seven months. Affection Scale All dogs, regardless of their breed, are capable of showing affection and attention to their humans. No one in the world who can welcome you home at the end of the day, the way a dog would. With that said, Labrador Retrievers are known to be extremely mushy when it comes to showing their love. Males The Male Labrador is typically considered more affectionate than the females. However, the difference can be so subtle that owners might not even notice. The males tend to cling to their owners for affection and will likely display their exuberance when rewarded with treats. They just show their love a little differently. Since females tend to be more independent, some people might mistake it as being aloof. But in reality, they are more than happy to have their humans near them. Aggressiveness and Dominance One of the many reasons why Labrador Retrievers are a favorite among other breeds of dogs is because of their gentle demeanor. They also never show any sign of dominance. In some cases, your Lab might accidentally push past you through the door or take up space on the couch. This can be mistaken as a sign of dominance by first time Lab owners. However, these are associated with behavioral issues and have nothing to do with them being dominant. In some very rare instances, your Lab might show some signs of aggression or dominance, but this has more to do with their upbringing and environment. The male Lab might show signs of aggressiveness when he is protective of their things, such as his toys, bed, food, and owners. Meanwhile, if a male Lab is feeling dominant, he will likely hold his tail stiff, wagging back and forth. He will make a bold stance, his ears will be up, and his neck will appear bigger. Females Like their male counterparts, female Labs are not usually aggressive or dominant; however, they will only show their aggressiveness toward other female dogs. Because of this trait, they are often picked to become hunting, service, guide, and K-9 dogs. Males Because of their big and jolly personality, the male Lab can be more challenging to train in comparison to female Labs. They are easily distracted, especially during mating season when a female dog is around. They tend to hump, mark, and chase female dogs, resulting in a slower training pace. Females This is where the female Labs get the spotlight. Females mature faster during the puppy stage, which makes them learn tricks quicker. But also bear in mind that regardless of what breed of dog you choose to own, they will not learn on their own. Pet parents need to have the patience and dedication to teach their dogs how to behave properly. Male vs. Are Labrador Retrievers too friendly by nature to become guard dogs? The majority of Labs fail at being guard dogs because of their warm and happy personalities. But for those who are wondering, can they be trained to be guard dogs? Generally speaking, any dog, if trained properly, could. Guard dogs do more than just bark. Sometimes it comes naturally depending on the breed, but oftentimes, dogs have to be trained to become one. Their purpose is to protect properties or their owners in case a threat presents itself. Guard dogs will be ready to attack and bite when necessary. Meanwhile, watchdogs are simply dogs that watch. A good watchdog keeps an eye out for any intruders around. Sometimes, all you really need is a loud bark from a large dog to scare an intruder away. But in the end, will the male Lab be better at the job? Or will the female ace it? Males Males have a natural tendency to protect their territory, which means they will make good watchdogs. However, they have lesser control over their aggression. The challenge will be to train the male Lab to stop barking on command. Females The female Lab is protective by nature due to their maternal instinct. She will have no problem watching over those who are important to her. The advantage of the female Lab when it comes to being watchdogs is their level of trainability. As mentioned earlier, female Labs are easier to train than males. They are more manageable to control and would calm down easily when they are told. This means your male or female dog will be infertile. But if you want your dog to have offspring, then leave them intact. There are a few differences between an intact and a neutered dog. But when it comes to male and female Labs, will these differences matter? Males The process of neutering among male dogs is called castration, which is the process of removing its testicles. Some people believe that neutering their male Labs will fix behavioral issues like humping and marking. However, some studies show that neutering male Labs pose more problems than keeping them intact. Regarding physical effects, the difference in intact and neutered male Labs is quite apparent. Your neutered Labrador will have no testicles. Those who are neutered before they reach sexual maturity will look more feminine because of their smaller head. An intact male Lab will also be a little taller compared to ones that have been neutered. Females When it comes to female Labrador Retrievers, owners often decide to spay them because of convenience and health reasons. Spaying female dogs require major abdominal surgery wherein their reproductive organs are removed. It takes about two weeks for your dog to recover from this traditional procedure fully. A less invasive option is the laparoscopic spay. During this procedure, a small incision is made to remove only the ovaries. Similar to males, female intact Labs are taller compared to those that have been spayed. Some owners spay their females, especially if they have male dogs around the house. Others do it for health reasons. Studies have shown that spaying your female Lab decreases the risk of developing diseases in the future like mammary cancer and pyometra. In doing so, this will give you a better perspective on how to care for them and make sure they are in tip-top shape. Just like other breeds, Labrador Retrievers have specific health risks they might be prone to. For instance, they could develop hip problems if left unfit and inactive because of their large build. While these are general health problems specific to the breed, some health issues are only particular to males and females. Males The male Labrador Retriever is prone to perineal tumor and hernia, especially in old age. Females Female Labradors are vulnerable to developing urinary tract infections because of how they urinate. They tend to crouch down lower, which puts them at risk of contracting bacteria found on the ground. It is advisable to walk your Lab for at least one hour every day to avoid muscle degeneration, obesity, and joint problems. Hormonal Differences It takes years for humans to reach their adolescent years while it only takes a couple of months for dogs before they begin to flirt around other dogs. Most dog breeds reach sexual maturity around 6 to 7 months, which is usually when owners decide to spay or neuter them. When it comes to Labs, females are also ahead in this category as they reach hormonal maturity faster than the males. Males There are some important things to consider before deciding to neuter your male Labrador. Most experts recommend waiting until they are two years of age since premature neutering can lead to certain physical and hormonal implications. Male Labs tend to reach their fertility peak between their 12th and 15th month. They can also be sexually charged all year round. Some telltale signs that your male Lab is in heat is when they start marking properties and start humping furniture and toys. Owners also need to be informed about the difference between vasectomies and castration. Vasectomies do not stop the male hormones that cause some undesirable behaviors. During the surgery, the dog will be under anesthesia. You may notice that his attraction to females, his humping, and mounting will be lessened. Females Similar to the male Labrador, spaying your female Lab should ideally wait until she reaches two years old. However, this can be a little tricky since they first start entering heat between 7 and 12 months. This becomes harder when you have an unneutered male around the house. A female dog in heat will be moody and needy. Her nipples will be swollen, and she might be sensitive to touch. Some people believe that spaying their female dogs will eliminate negative behavioral issues. While this breed is friendly by nature, there are still some differences between how a male and a female Lab will interact when exposed to other animals. Males The male Lab will likely be competitive when it comes to their food and territory. Their interaction with cats and other types of animals is a different story. However, they might get too excited about playing and cause a ruckus or injure smaller animals. Females As mentioned earlier, the female Lab can have a hard time getting along with other female dogs. They are generally aggressive towards other female dogs due to their competitive nature, and because of this, they tend to take ownership of their food, their owners, and their territory against other females. Experts advise getting female dogs as puppies if you intend to have them live together. This way, they can grow up and be familiar with each other. While they are aggressive towards females, they can tolerate other animals like cats. This is due to their nurturing and protective instincts. With Children This is what most families want to know when they are getting ready to introduce a dog to their home. The good news is that Labrador Retrievers are great with children. But the same question remains, who gets along with children better? Males The male Lab is an ultimate attention seeker. They will love the attention given to them by children. However, parents still need to keep a close watch and be cautious when they start playing. Similar to what was said earlier, smaller children may get hurt when male Labs get too excited playing. This is the reason why female Labradors are preferred for families with small kids. Also, if you want your Lab to have stronger features, then you might want to get a male. But if you want your dog to have softer features, then you should choose the female. Labs do get along with most breeds but bear in mind that females tend to dislike female dogs if they did not grow up together. Lifestyle: Do you leave the house a lot? Do you have the time and patience to clean up her mess that will probably last two or more weeks? The male Lab is a lot less work regarding this particular subject. Children: Do you have children? How old are they? They tend to be more patient and tolerable towards toddlers. Meanwhile, the male Lab will see children as playmates. In order to avoid accidents while playing, male Labs should be paired with children much older and bigger so that they can handle them better. Social Biases in Popularity Before getting your own Lab, you might wonder which gender is already preferred by Labrador owners. Every home is different so it is important to choose a Labrador that fits in with your current lifestyle and living situation. Below we explore some Myths and Facts about male and female Labradors. Female Labradors are just as affectionate and in need of the same amount of attention as the male Lab — they just do not always show it in the same way. Females are more guarded with their affection, but males will shower you with unconditional love regardless of whether or not you approach them for affection on a regular basis. One could look at this difference in behavior and decide from it that female Labradors are more emotionally mature and secure than male Labradors. This is a myth. To a certain extent, it is true that males are generally bigger than females, but there are many cases where females are larger than males. It all depends on their particular genetics. They are so much more difficult than females are! Females are sometimes considered easier to control because males have a reputation for humping, marking, and chasing females in heat while out on a stroll. These behaviors are not a true reflection of all male Labradors. Many of these undesirable behavior traits can be remedied quite easily by neutering your pet. They are just natural urges that can be controlled with a bit of training or strategic distraction. While males can sometimes be slower to train, they are certainly very intelligent and by no means difficult to train at all. Fact: Unspayed Female Labs Can Be Moody Female Labradors that are not spayed can actually become quite moody and bad-tempered, especially when they are in heat. This is obviously less noticeable than humping, marking, and chasing, but can still be an unpleasant characteristic. Spaying a female fixes the moodiness and temper quite effectively, so it is not to say that a female Lab is a bad choice because of her potential mood swings. Fact: Female Labs Can Be Easier to Train Than Males Some believe that all Labradors are very easy to train, and while this is true, it must be noted that the females tend to mature faster than the males and therefore learn quite a bit quicker during their puppy phase. Males can lag behind a bit, but will still be well ahead of other dogs in the training class. This is true of most litters and something that many breeders and trainers have noticed. Sorry boys — the girls have got this one! Differences in Official Breed Standards Of course, some Lab owners are more interested in the breeding standard differences between female and male Labradors than they are in their personality and temperament differences. If you are one of those people, here is a bit of information that might interest you. Do not panic if your pet does not seem to match up to these standards. These are guidelines for show dogs. Pets that do not fall within the AKC breed standard range can still be great family pets. However, non-compliance means that Labs cannot compete in AKC conformation classes and should not be used for breeding. If you are not competing and your Labrador is healthy and happy, there is no reason to stress about these standards and differences. The standard expects male Labradors to grow to a height of between .Female Labradors are typically a little shorter, with most growing to a height of between .Of course, this is just the expected norm and is not the case with all Labradors. According to the American Kennel Club breed standards, a full-grown male Labrador is typically heavier than a full-grown female Labrador. Often pet owners with small children or living with the elderly will choose a dog under a certain weight because they fear accidents when a dog becomes boisterous and potentially knocks someone over. That being said, females are typically chosen because they are considered to be lighter, smaller, and easier to physically handle than male Labradors. A fully grown adult female Labrador is expected to weigh between 55 lbs and 70 lbs. A full-grown adult male Labrador is expected to weigh between 65 lbs and 80 lbs. The average lifespan of both male and female Labradors is between 12 and .However, it is said that chocolate Labradors may have shorter life expectancies at around just 10 years. The National Geographic mentions in an article published in that it is not the color of the chocolate Lab that affects its shorter lifespan, but more the fact that harmful genes were introduced to the breed in order to achieve the Chocolate color. In , studies conducted in the UK uncovered some interesting statistics that took into account more than 30 Labradors. The outcome was that the median longevity of Labradors is typically 12 years. In fact, the Telegraph released an article that featured a male Labrador called Butch, who died at the age of 29 years in .A number of factors can affect how long or short your Labrador lives. How you care for and treat your Labrador can make all of the difference. Gender has very little to do with it. There are two main aspects that really impact how long your Labrador will live. The first is the inherited genetics from the parents. While you cannot control this, you can ask to take a look at the health and medical history of the parents, if you are buying your Labrador pup from a breeder. The second aspect is what happens to your Labrador during its life such as accidents, illnesses, injury, dietary issues and so on. Male vs Female Labradors: Differences in Personality If personality plays an important role in your decision-making, then understanding what sets the male and female apart in terms of attachment styles, affection, aggression, dominance, and independence is a good start to making the right choice. How Male and Female Labradors Attach to Humans Attachment is something that both male and female Labs are particularly comfortable with — they just do it differently. Both male and female Labradors love their human family members endlessly, but there is a definite difference between how they attach to them or at least, how they show it. While both need and give love, females tend to be more independent. They are not as attached or needy as the males tend to be. The male Labrador will swoon and show undying love whereas the female Labrador may treat you as if you should earn it. However, she is not really aloof by nature and if love and affection are freely shown to her, you will find that she will freely reciprocate. Male Labradors may seem easier to please as they will happily lie at your feet, satisfied just to be in your company, while female Labradors will need the experience to be a little more rewarding in order for them to give you their undivided attention. These are attachment style differences one might only be able to pick up on if they have a male and female Lab to compare. If you had one or the other, the difference in attachment or what is expected would not be particularly obvious. How Male and Female Labradors Show Affection Differently While both genders are affectionate, there is a difference in the level of affection given and required. Male Labradors are typically more affectionate than female Labradors, although the females will not shy away from affection. The difference is subtle and more seen as independence in the females. The male dogs tend to come to their humans for affection whereas the female will be happy for her humans to come to her. Treats can also impact on how affectionate the male Labrador is. Males tend to show more exuberance and, in general, can be more affectionate when there are treats at hand. Females are just as prone to loving treats, but they will not be particularly more affectionate for a treat. One might be surprised to hear if someone says that their Labrador is showing aggressive behavior, regardless of whether it is male or female. Both male and female Labradors are non-aggressive types of dogs and this is one of many reasons why they are such a popular family, child-friendly pet. Male Labradors only really get aggressive when they are feeling protective of their things toys, bed, space, food, humans. Female Labradors typically only show aggression to other female dogs. If your Labrador pushes past you through the door, takes up residence on your favorite couch, or accidentally pushes you down that is more a behavioral problem than a dominance issue. It is very rare for any Lab, male or female, to pin other dogs down or bully their owners. If they do get into a little scrape with another dog in the pack, it is usually over and done with quickly and very easily forgotten. With the correct puppy training from day one, neither male nor female Labradors display signs of dominance issues. That being said, it is never a good idea to believe that dominance issues will never arise. Some Labradors have shown dominant behavior. The male Labrador that is feeling dominant will generally hold his tail very high and stiff while wagging it bag and forth in a very obvious purposeful manner. This shows that your Labrador is feeling very confident and he is trying to communicate that he will not back down. He will also balance his weight on all legs and acquire a tense stance while making himself look a bit larger. Neck and head will be raised, ears will up and eyes will be forward and staring intently. Male Labradors showing dominant behavior will not bare their teeth or show any other signs of aggression. Female Labradors show dominance in a more independent and intellectual manner. Males can also show similar patterns of dominant behavior though it is rarer for them to do so. Independence is one of the biggest differences noted between male and female Labradors. Generally speaking, both male and female Labradors do not like to be alone for long periods of time without their humans. They need daily interaction and stimulation. Males are more prone to following their humans from room to room whereas females are happy to play, sleep or do their own thing as long as their humans are close at hand. While humans take years and years to reach maturity, it seems as if dogs are puppies for a blink of the eye and suddenly they are adolescents and causing a ruckus. Of course, sexual maturity varies from one breed to the next and from one individual dog to another. Most breeds reach sexual maturity around 6 to 9 months, which is when most people choose to neuter or spay them. Hormonally, male and female Labradors have distinct differences. Females reach hormonal maturity before males. Studies have shown that such early neutering of male Labs has shown an increase in the number of cases featuring cranial cruciate ligament ruptures and elbow dysplasia. While 6 months is generally an acceptable time to neuter a male Labrador, some vets will advise that owners wait until at least 2 years before doing so. Males do not go into heat but are considered at the very peak of their fertility between 12 and 15 months of age. Due to their hormonal physiology, they can be sexually active all year. A tell-tale sign that your male Labrador is mature sexually is when he starts to mark property and hump furniture and other pets. Many people believe that neutering a male Labrador will calm him down — this is not particularly true. However, neutering a male Labrador can eliminate undesirable behavior such as humping, marking, and roaming. Vasectomies are not carried out on male Labradors, but rather castration. This is because a vasectomy does not stop male hormone production which is what causes the undesirable behavior in dogs. Both testicles are removed through the scrotal sack via a small incision. Most male Labradors will show changes in the following after castration: attraction to female dogs, urinating marking , mounting or humping, roaming, and aggressive behavior. Labrador owners who get a male dog and do not plan to breed him should definitely consider the hormonal benefits of castration. Medically, castration is beneficial to the male Labrador as it is known to reduce the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease, as well as reduce the chance of the dog developing a perianal tumor or hernia. Females will go into heat at least twice each year. When this happens, you will notice a very obvious change in your dog. Tell-tale signs that a female Labrador is in heat include swollen breasts, thirst, neediness or clinginess, frequent urination, and tail-flagging. Male dogs might also start following the female Lab around. If your male dog is also not neutered, you may want to pay careful attention or you might end up with a litter of puppies in the near future. Females in heat can be a messy business too, so they are not easier to tend to in terms of hormonal changes. There are 4 stages to expect during a heat cycle: Proestrus, Estrus, Diestrus, and Anestrus. The first stage is called Proestrus, which is when the vulva swells and produces a vaginal discharge. This is quite noticeable to dog owners — you might see it on bedding, furniture, flooring and of course, your pet. A female Labrador is the most fertile for 9 to 13 days after the active heat period starts and this period of high fertility typically lasts for around 5 days. Anestrus is the phase of sexual inactivity that lasts between the last active heat period and the next Proestrus period. The Anestrus period usually lasts between and days. If you find that your female Labrador falls pregnant during the Estrus stage, then the Diestrus stage activates and lasts until she births the puppies. Birth usually takes place around 67 days after conception, but can happen a week or so earlier. In terms of hormonal behavior problems, spaying has been considered a viable solution. Many people think that spaying a female Labrador will calm her down — this is not actually true, although it can have some positive effects on the female Labrador. When will a female Labrador stop going into heat? Most dogs experience a decline in ovary activity during their 6th year. This means that most female Labradors can no longer conceive when they are 7 years or older. If a female Labrador is not spayed by this time, most do not worry too much about getting it done. If you are wondering what the difference is between a male and female Labrador and which gender is best suited to your home and lifestyle, it can be difficult to specify. Generally speaking, if you want a dog that is a trusty companion that follows you around, a male Lab is a good choice. If you want a trusty companion that is happy to show a little independence, a female Lab is a good choice. Either way, male and female Labradors are both an excellent choice and most owners do not regret their decision either way. As someone who owns both a male and a female Lab, I can say they are both loving, affectionate dogs that make great family pets. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a new dog for you and your home. What size dog should you get? What breed? What gender? Is a male or a female dog better for you? There are almost no differences between male and female dogs of the same breed that have been neutered. In dogs that have not been neutered, gender differences are pretty much limited exclusively to sexual behavior. Male dogs of the breed tend to be slightly bigger than female dogs of the same breed. So, if you are hoping for a pooch at the smaller end of the breed spectrum, you may be better off with a girl. Gender is only one of several factors that influence the size of a dog. The best thing you can actually do is look at the size of the parents to predict the size of the pup. Features Because of hormonal differences, male dogs do tend to have rougher, more masculine features than their female counterparts. But if you are looking for a masculine looking version of your preferred dog breed, bear in mind that neutering puppies before maturity may also mean that they never develop these rougher features. Trainability Common wisdom suggests that female puppies mature faster than male puppies, and therefore, they have better attention spans and are easier to train. However, it seems highly likely that this is a human projection, projecting this characteristic that we see in human children onto dogs. Research conducted by Patricia McConnell by speaking to hundreds of dog trainers actually suggests that there is no difference. About half of all the trainers she spoke to suggested that male dogs were easier to train, and the other half female dogs. The one thing that they all agreed on was that it made little difference. Behavior Another study on genetics and the social behavior of dogs found that male dogs were six times more likely to bite than their female counterparts. But the conclusion of this study was not that male dogs were naturally more aggressive than female dogs, but rather that owners treat and train male and female dogs differently, resulting in different behavior. This is another example of human projection, this time causing a difference between male and female pups. What do you imagine is the effect of being called Butch versus being called Cupcake? Not on the dog itself, for whom their name is just a recognizable sound, but on how they are treated by their owners and families. If you are planning on breeding your dog, you need to know whether you want a male or a female. The sexual behavior of non-neutered dogs is also different. Female dogs generally only go into heat twice a year, and it is at this time that they will be searching around for a mate. She will secrete a liquid that is designed to attract a mate and this can also be a pain to clean up if they are indoor dogs, so that is something to consider. Taking them out for walks during this period can also be challenging, as they will attract significant attention from any non-neutered male dogs that are passing. Male dogs that have not been neutered are sexually active throughout the year. This means that they will be those dogs that are sniffing around female dogs out on the street during their heat cycle. They can also have a tendency to mount people and inanimate objects in order to satisfy their need to reproduce. Intact male dogs are also significantly more likely to indulge in marking activities, peeing on everything so that other dogs can scent their territory. Having to deal with the different sexual behaviors of male and female dogs that have not been neutered is certainly a consideration, but once a dog has been neutered, these behaviors pretty much disappear, again rendering the gender difference between dogs negligible. However, it is worth noting that female dogs tend to be a bit more expensive to neuter than male dogs. One of the few significant behavioral differences that has been noted between male and female dogs is that all dogs tend to get on better with dogs of the opposite gender. So, male dogs seem to get on better with female dogs and vice versa. This can be worth considering if you already have a dog at home. Difference Between Intact And Neutered Dogs Neutering is when the sexual organs of a dog are removed, preventing their ability to reproduce, and cutting off the hormones that can cause certain behaviors such as those listed above. In female dogs, the process is called an ovariohysterectomy and involves abdominal surgery to remove the ovaries and uterus. For male dogs, the process involves removing the testes. After being neutered, male dogs are less likely to hump people, other dogs, and inanimate objects, but if they have already picked up this behavior, it can continue. They are also less likely to urinate in order to mark their territory. Both males and females are less likely to display aggression towards other dogs after being neutered, as they do not have the same instinct to compete to reproduce. But training plays a more important role in limiting this behavior than neutering. Both genders also tend to be a little bit lazier and have less energy after they have been neutered, though this is not always the case. It is important that owners keep a closer eye on the diets of neutered dogs, as their appetites increase and they can have a tendency to develop weight problems. While our overall verdict is that gender is a fairly insignificant factor when it comes to choosing a new pup, when you are down to the line and need to choose between a girl and a boy pup, what are the most important things? Existing Family Dogs. One of the few behavioral differences that can be noted between male and female dogs is that both tend to get on better with the opposite gender. So, if you already have a dog at home, it is worth making sure your next pooch is of the opposite gender. Male dogs tend to have rougher features, and female dogs lighter features. If particular features of a breed appeal to you, this can be a factor. But if you choose a male dog, remember that neutering can also affect their look. Mating Behavior. In non-neutered dogs, female heat cycles can be on the messy side, and it may require keeping your femme fatale under house arrest for a few weeks to avoid her getting impregnated. It is a matter of choosing which of these behaviors you find most manageable. Other than this, you may have personal preferences. Perhaps if you are looking at a Maltese, you are keen on a female puppy that you can dress up in cute outfits and spend hours brushing their hair. If you have an eye on a Rottweiler, perhaps you have a male in mind, so that you can give them a spiky collar and call them Butch. They are human cultural constructs that we project onto our animals as we anthropomorphize them as a member of the family. This is down to training and treatment. As you might have thought mostly Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. In our experience we love both genders and have noticed individually every dog is different. For example Charlie ended up being one of the smallest from his litter and never lifted his leg to mark. The gender of a dog makes relatively little difference to their behavior and temperament. It is then how they are trained and treated that will determine their important personality traits. If you are planning on having your dog neutered, you can pretty much choose any puppy from the litter and it will make little difference. If you plan to keep your new pooch intact, just look out for the different sexual behaviors of female and male dogs. Save to Pinterest Male vs Female Dogs? Which one is better for you? Female Labrador Overview Whether chocolate, black, or yellow, Labradors have a friendly and loving nature that makes them a popular choice for families. Is one better than the other? Is there any significant difference? The differences between a male and female Lab may be minor, but they could have a big influence on your decision. Find out what you should consider when choosing the sex of your Labrador. The breed originated in the UK and was developed from Canadian fishing dogs as a gundog, meaning that it was bred to assist hunters in finding and retrieving game. These medium-to-large dogs are gentle giants with a dense, hard coat that can be a deep black, rich chocolate, or vibrant yellow. One of the best features of the Lab is its eyes, however, which radiate calmness and intelligence. Labs tend to get along with all family members—human and animal alike—and enjoy energetic activities like swimming, fetch, and hunting. Of the few differences in the sexes, males are usually more playful and goofier, more attention-seeking, and more social with people and other pets. Some males may have a higher drive to please their owners. Males tend to be more protective of the family or the territory. Training Labs are easy to train compared to other breeds, but male Labs get distracted easily and may be harder to train than females. Males also need more maintenance and consistency in reinforcing training behaviors. Males may also experience perianal tumors and hernias in old age. Be sure to speak to your vet about the best time to neuter your Lab to reduce the risk of these conditions. At that time, the male may relentlessly seek a female for mating, which may include humping furniture, toys, and people. Intact males may also display sexually-based aggression or marking behaviors to establish and protect their territory. Also, be aware that both male and female dogs can undergo a significant change in temperament after being neutered or spayed. Male Labs The Positives: Fun-loving: Male dogs often see humans, and especially children, as playmates. Less Sensitive: Being less sensitive can sound like a negative, but it comes in handy when training, since you can usually correct them without getting their feelings hurt. Neutering: Interestingly, once a male dog is neutered, most or all of the negative characteristics disappear. Neutering a male is also less invasive and less costly than spaying a female. The Negatives: Wandering: Some male dogs are wanderers. This is more true of intact males, since their sense of smell leads them to seek out females in heat. Aggressive: Male Labs can be outgoing, assertive and demanding of attention in an unintentionally clumsy manner. This seems to be fine for most adult human companions, but could be seen as a negative around children, because a larger male dog can accidentally knock over small children. Thankfully, neutering can greatly reduce this habit. Female Labs The Positives: Gentle: Females often want to be in closer contact with their owner and seek his or her approval. Nurturing: Almost any dog can be a loving companion for a child. Nevertheless, some believe female dogs make a better choice for children because they may be more naturally nurturing and protective of young ones, even if they are from another species. They can also be better in agility and stronger in stamina, making them a great choice for a hunting dog in the upland field. We often find that women or especially gentle, patient men train female dogs more easily. Many owners prefer this, because they want a more compact dog that will fit into cars, offices, or smaller homes. Female Labs also tend to have narrower heads, smaller chests, and longer, slimmer noses. They also tend to be more hostile toward other females at any time, depending on their mood, but especially when they are protecting their pups or competing for food. Some female dogs can be more cranky than males for no apparent reason, but it is usually due to hormonal fluctuations. Touchy: Some females are more physically sensitive and environmentally aware than males. This is especially true of unspayed females during breeding, when they are not ready or willing to be with a mate. They have been known to bite and growl at any male dog that comes near them. Humans should beware during these times, as they can be the brunt of cranky growls and bared teeth. Females can also be very easily angered when they are caring for or guarding their pups. Growls and barks are not uncommon, and some have even been known to bite. Many female dogs cannot withstand loud noises or a raised voice. In some cases, too much of an angry voice in disciplining a female dog can damage her feelings long-term and make her far more difficult to train. When in need of correction, female dogs often require a soft, gentle voice. Impatient dog owners might be tempted to give up and quit training or they indulge their dog too much, giving in to her desires instead of maintaining the fact that they are the trainer and in charge. Consequently, when a female urinates on a lawn, it creates unsightly brown, burned-looking spots. Spaying: Spaying a female also tends to neutralize most negative behaviors, causing her to be less moody, cranky and touchy. It also seems to make her less aggressive which is usually only with other female dogs. However, spaying a female is more invasive and more costly than neutering a male. When it comes to buying a dog, Pete always says to choose the dog that best fits the type of trainer you are. That said, he has some male dogs that are more sensitive, so he has to lighten up with them and be a little more sympathetic. On the other hand, he trains some female dogs that are just as hard-charging and hard-headed as some males. So, that about sums it up. Male and female dogs are different in ways that can be strikingly similar to humans. Bear in mind that there can also be temperamental differences that have nothing to do with gender. One dog may be more independent and not enjoy being pet, where another dog will crumple and roll over on his belly the second you pet him. One dog may be very people-focused; another may be more excited about retrieving and hunting. One dog may be high in energy; another may be more calm and laid back. And feel free to ask us questions. Just like humans, our canine daughters tend to resemble their mothers in appearance; the sons tend to resemble their fathers. Marble Mountain Kennels.

Most Pekingese, however, have quite long fur. Both breeds have wrinkles and flat muzzles, but a Pekingese's tail won't be curled like a Pug's - instead, it hangs over the dog's back. Pekingese can also come in different coat colors than Pugs, though both can be seen in fawn and black. Despite having longer fur, Pekingese don't shed as much as Pugs, but still a moderate amount. French Bulldogs are another popular breed with wrinkles and a flat muzzle. They are slightly bigger than Pugs and therefore not a member of the toy group and have short, stubby tails. Their ears are perked, rather than the pug's folded ears. A solid black or tan and black Frenchie may have white markings on the chest or stomach, differentiating it from a Pug. Two stubborn, flat-faced breeds, Pugs and English Bulldogs have a lot in common. For example, both have faces coated with wrinkles. However, Bulldogs have short, stumpy tails, while pugs have longer, curled tails. Bulldogs can come in many more color varieties, such as brown or brown with white markings. Pugs are smaller than Bulldogs, as Bulldogs are members of the non-sporting group. Bulldogs also have different ears than Pugs. These two breeds are roughly equal in size and body structure. However, Boston Terriers usually have perked up ears and stubby tails, and they tend to be black and white, while black Pugs aren't seen with white markings. They also have completely different origins - Boston terriers originate in the United States, while Pugs date back to Ancient China. Boxers are medium-sized dogs and larger than Pugs, but the two both tend to have flat, black muzzles. A Boxer can have either cropped or uncropped ears, along with a natural or docked tail. A Boxer's natural tail is longer than a pug's and isn't curled, while the docked tail is very short. Boxers are usually brown or black in color, but also are seen in white, brindle, and more color variants. Pugs aren't typically seen in a brown coat. Very intelligent, and at times willful, pugs are happy and affectionate pups who remain very loyal to their owners. As a brachycephalic breed, that adorable smooshy face can also be the source of common health problems for pugs, which potential owners will want to understand before they choose to become pug parents. Pugs come in two standard colors with a few tonal variations: fawn with a black mask or all black. The fawn or tan coat color can range from a warm apricot to a cool and rarely seen silver. Their heads feature their signature short, flat, black muzzle covered with deep wrinkles. Their prominent eyes dominate their comical, wrinkly face and showcase a range of emotions, from surprise and happiness to curiosity. They sport moles on their cheeks, called "beauty spots" and a clearly defined "thumb mark" on their forehead. Their short coat is actually a double coat, and they shed like crazy, especially during the summer months. According to the AKC standard , the perfect pug tail has a double curl. Temperament A pug's favorite place to be is right by your side. Bred to be companions, they are completely content snuggling up on your lap and lounging the day away and aren't afraid to hop right into bed with you. You shouldn't expect a pug to hunt, guard, or retrieve. A pug will have nothing to do with such activities. A funny little dog, pugs often find ways to create their own silly entertainment—but please for their sake pay attention to the show they are putting on—while maintaining a dignified manner when necessary. While they are a toy breed, pugs are a bit tougher than other similar-sized pups and are up for playtime. Avoid disappointment and make sure the kids know pugs aren't likely to play fetch or chase a soccer ball though. Pugs are pretty amenable to getting along with anyone, including other dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pugs also make great companions for those living in apartments and older individuals because they don't require too much indoor space for activity. We're not necessarily saying pugs are lazy, but they are known to sleep up to 14 hours per day! They also don't bark much because breathing is a bit difficult for them. Their breathing challenges combined with their short legs make them poor swimmers, too. Although they'd likely benefit from a dip in the pool on hot summer days, as they don't tolerate heat—or the cold—well. So be diligent in helping manage their intake—limit their treats and don't feed them table scraps no matter how cute and pleading their stare may be—because their small stature makes them likely to gain weight quickly. You should also encourage exercise, although they don't need much in a day. They find creative ways to burn off energy on their own. Bathing about once monthly and regular brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt, or a hound glove help manage significant pug shedding. And those sweet facial wrinkles need extra attention because they are a breeding ground for infection if they are damp and dirty. Dry your pug's wrinkles thoroughly after bathing and wipe them out in between baths—a dry cotton ball will do the trick. Pugs also need their nails trimmed regularly, as they don't naturally wear by spending lots of time outdoors. Regular teeth brushing is a must as pugs are susceptible to gum disease. Training can be a challenge, Nichols says. Remember their ultimate goal is simply to spend time with you. If those surgeries are not done, expect a lifelong loud snoring dog. These are symptoms of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS , which can also cause saliva disorders, sleep issues, and difficulties with regurgitation. Pugs can face a fair amount of other health issues, including back problems, epilepsy, allergies, hemi-vertebrae or misshapen vertebrae , hip dysplasia , patellar luxation, and nerve degeneration later in life. A variety of skin conditions may affect pugs, including yeast infections, staph infections, or demodectic mange. While their big, dark eyes are adorable, they are especially vulnerable. Pugs sometimes face corneal ulcers, proptosis , and dry eye, among other ailments. Skin conditions such as walking dandruff—caused by a small mite—need to be treated by your veterinarian. Pug parents also need to watch that their pugs maintain a healthy weight; obesity can exacerbate their breathing problems. A study released in comparing the health of pugs to other dogs found "many critical health-related welfare challenges to overcome for pugs. Conversely, according to the study, pugs had significantly reduced adjusted odds of having heart murmur or lipoma tumors. One affliction unique to pugs is Pug Dog Encephalitis , afatal inflammatory brain disease. There is no known cause or test for it unfortunately. It causes a pug to seize, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. Research is ongoing. History Pugs are an ancient breed—perhaps the oldest dog breed, in fact—that originated in China. Going back some 2, years, flat-faced, or short-nosed toy dogs like the pug were popular with Chinese emperors and lived lavish lives because of it, the AKC says. They were only given to those outside the Far East as gifts. But in the s and early s, Dutch traders arrived in Europe with the breed and thanks to popularity with royal households they quickly gained popularity across Europe. Their long history reveals a number of different names for the breed including lo-sze Chinese , mopsi Finnish , doguillo Spanish , and mophonds Dutch , among others. The name pug is supposedly derived from the Latin word "pugnus"—which means "fist"—to reflect the fact that a pug's face looks like a clenched fist, the AKC writes. Pugs were also very popular during the Victorian era, featured on postcards, in paintings, and as figurines. For years they remained largely pets of the aristocracy. Queen Victoria had many pugs and bred them , and Marie Antoinette also had a pug named Mops. They were standardized as a breed in the early s. Upon taking over the Chinese Imperial Palace in , the English discovered several pugs and began breeding them back in England to improve the breed. It wasn't until after the Civil War that pugs came to the United States. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Initially very popular, pug ownership and breeding waned until the s when the, the Pug Dog Club of America was created and recognized by the AKC. Fun Facts One legend says the pug became the mascot of Holland's royal House of Orange after a pug barked a warning to save the life of the Prince of Orange before an attack by Spanish troops, the AKC writes. Another legend holds that some pugs were prized in Chinese culture because their wrinkles resembled good luck symbols in the Chinese language. A group of pugs is called a grumble. Not surprisingly, pugs' cute mugs have graced the big screen. In recent years, many pugs have become insta-famous on Instagram as well. Doug the Pug is undeniably the most popular of the bunch. With more than 13 million social followers, the celebrity pup rubs noses with stars like Joe Jonas and Shakira. Pug owners and enthusiasts are just as quirky and loveable as the breed, often dressing up their pups and hosting get-togethers and pug parades. Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Pug photo, ca .Note its small head and long legs. A pug by Carl Reichert. The pug that was predominantly featured in the commercials was Cheeka. A few other adverts also appeared in the following months, inspired by the idea of a dog following a boy. But one pug with features that are a little different has captured attention online. Nola, who is almost a year old, lives in the Netherlands with owners Gerjanne and Elieke Bijker. She is a "retro pug. Which makes her 75 percent pug and 25 percent beagle," Nola's owner Bijker told Newsweek. This way pugs can go back to their original and healthy state. Part pug, part beagle, she has been praised for being much closer in appearance to the original pug breed. As breeds increase in popularity, so too do health issues. Bill Lambert, a spokesperson for The Kennel Club told Newsweek: "Breeding dogs with overly flat faces can contribute to serious health complications—but sadly it is something that has developed in some examples of these and other flat-faced breeds over the years, often driven by profit, fashion and celebrity influence, because it is perceived to look cute. Nola the retro pug is closer to the original breed's look, before increasingly flat faces were bred through generations. On TikTok , more than 5 million people were amazed at her look and praised her owners for advocating for the healthy breeding. But you can also call Nola a puggle," said Bijker. With pugs it's also common to cut off their tails, but Nola still has her curly tail.
How long should puppies stay with their mother? The ideal window is between 8 and weeks-old. They are healthy and adorable, and you want to bring them home as soon as you possibly can. However, the time your puppy spends with their mother and siblings is critical for development, and so it's important to make sure they spend this growth period with their litter. The first month For the first four weeks or so, puppies depend on their mothers for everything. This milk provides all the nutrition the puppies need for the first few weeks after birth. Weaning to solid foods Puppies start to experiment with solid food as early as 3-weeks-old. They still nurse, and mothers continue to produce milk for up to 10 weeks. Some nursing is for nutrition, but it is also a comforting, bonding activity for the puppies. Most puppies are fully weaned to solid food between 7 and 10 weeks of age, although the transition can occur earlier. Learning to speak dog Just as important for puppy development is learning proper canine etiquette and communication as part of a litter. For example, as early as 3 weeks of age, puppies start learning from their mother and siblings to eliminate away from where they sleep, which helps with housebreaking later. The pups are practicing hunting and communication behaviors that they need to perfect. One of the most important skills that puppies learn through play is bite inhibition and not chomping down too hard. If a puppy bites too hard, the other will cry out, signaling that the bite was too rough. Moms will do the same thing or may gently correct the puppies for getting too rough. This is a critical lesson to learn before heading out into the world, as other dogs will be far less tolerant of inappropriate puppy play than Mom! Biting is also a common problem behavior that can land a dog in a shelter or worse later in life. Puppies will also practice a variety of vocalizations and body language, learning to communicate with their siblings and mother. Socialization Puppies have an early critical socialization period from approximately 5 to 14 weeks of age. During this time, puppies are open to learning and experiencing new things, and the things they learn will affect how they go through the rest of their lives. Breeders and other caretakers should be exposing the puppies to novel sights and sounds on a regular basis. Puppies destined to be working or sporting dogs should be exposed to things they will encounter in their future roles, such as sheep wool for herding dogs, a variety of materials and obstacles to climb over for agility dogs, and training scents for future drug and bomb detection dogs. These safe exposures should continue after you bring your puppy home, but early socialization with litter-mates and the mother are also important for building confidence. The puppies will observe how their mother responds to new people and things and then mimic her behavior. If Mom is relaxed and friendly around new people, the puppies will likely be comfortable with strangers. Research has found that puppies who are separated from the litter too early are more likely to show fear, aggression, anxiety, resource guarding, reactivity and inappropriate play biting than puppies who stay with the litter for at least eight weeks. The ideal time The exact time that is best for a puppy to go to its new home can vary by situation, but most breeders and veterinarians agree that 8 weeks of age is a good minimum. Some states have laws in place preventing puppies from being sold any earlier. Eight weeks after birth, the puppy is eating solid food on their own, they have benefited from socializing with litter-mates and observing mom, and they are well within the ideal timeframe to bond with new owners. Breeders may also opt to keep the puppies until 10 or 12 weeks of age. Toy breeds in particular are often kept with the litter until they are 12 weeks old because they are so small and fragile. This gives the pups extra time with the litter, and still has them going to their forever homes in plenty of time to form a strong bond with their new people. And anyone who has welcomed an adult dog into their home knows that dogs of any age will still bond with their new owners as long as they have had socialization with people! Keeping the puppies longer does mean more work for the breeder, since they are responsible for all the puppies during those extra weeks. But if the breeder is putting in that time and effort to give the puppies a great foundation, then the extra time with their litter can be very beneficial to both you and your new puppy. How old must a puppy be to leave its mother? Also, understanding the consequences of adopting a puppy before it is ready to leave its mother. The best age to get a Labrador puppy is 8 weeks old. June 8, Liz Palika Dog breeders and behavioral specialists feel that the week range is the adequate age for most dogs to leave their mother for their new homes. Unfortunately, in talking with other dog trainers, behavioral consultants and behaviorists, we all agree we're seeing a trend of puppies leaving mom and littermates far too young. A puppy who leaves his mother and littermates at five to six weeks of age, or worse yet, even younger, is going to suffer for that throughout his life. Adopting Eight Week Old Dogs Is Typical The traditional age for puppies to leave their mom and littermates and go to their new home has been eight weeks of age. At eight weeks of age most puppies are able to eat well, no longer need to nurse or eat supplemental formula, are mobile, and are aware of their world. They are well socialized to the people in their household and hopefully have also met other animals in the home. They have been exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, and smells and while they pay attention to these things, they are not afraid. At eight weeks of age these puppies are ready to leave their mother and siblings and go to their new home. Nine to Ten Week Old Pups are Typically The Best Age Since some puppies tend to go through a fear period at eight weeks of age an awareness of the world around them that can cause anxiety , many breeders and new owners would prefer to wait one or two more weeks. I brought home Hero, and before him Bones, at nine and a half weeks of age, because I felt that the puppies at that age were a bit more mature and ready for their new lives. One to two weeks can make a big difference. Other dog trainers and behaviorists agree: nine to 10 weeks of age is absolutely fine. In fact at this age, the puppy is past the eight week fear period, if he had one, and he's a bit more confident now. Developmentally, he's ready to learn, explore and figure out what his new life is going to be. Those who breed toy breeds especially, including Chihuahuas, Papillons, and other tiny dogs, will keep the puppies until they are 11 to 12 weeks of age. These tiny puppies can be quite fragile physically and may be slower to mature mentally and emotionally as babies. A few more weeks with their mother and littermates, as well as the people they know in their family, is often best for them. Larger puppies, however, shouldn't wait this long to go to their new homes. Nine to ten weeks of age is fine but any older could be problematic. Not only do large breed puppies grow rapidly, they are also stronger and rowdy, potentially making it more difficult for new owners to bond with this excited, big puppy who is jumping, pawing and otherwise making life difficult. Also, a week-old large-breed puppy is still a dependent baby; by 12 weeks he's changing. It's much easier for new owners to bond with an eight—to week-old puppy. The mother dog has so much to teach the new puppy ; lessons that will affect him all his life, and his littermates teach important lessons as well. If the mother dog has passed away, the littermates need to remain together. To Learn Key Social and Behavioral Traits Puppies who leave their canine family too early will show immediate behavior problems. They will be fearful of many things and show a lack of confidence. They can also be slow to bond to people or will go the other direction, attaching so strongly to their new owners that they will panic when left alone. The ability to soothe himself, to relax when left alone, is missing with most of these puppies. Biting is common. The mother dog teaches the puppy to control his biting as do the puppy's littermates. When puppies go to their new home, some biting is to be expected, as all puppies experiment. But when deprived of these early lessons, the puppy will bite more and harder, and teaching him that biting is not allowed is more difficult. This important transition time ensures that puppies receive all the appropriate nutrition from their mother. This will support the long term health of the puppy. Additionally, interrupting the weaning process too early has behavioral side effects for young dogs. Suckling, even past the need for milk can be a source of comfort while a puppy grows accustomed to eating only solid foods. Taking Puppies Too Young is Illegal In Some States In 26 states , the age at which puppies may be separated from the mother dog or sold is defined by law. Of those, 22 say that puppies must be eight weeks old before they can be sold. Three states—Wisconsin, Virginia, and Maine—require that puppies must be seven weeks old. Some states focus on the age that a puppy can be separated from his mother. Illinois, for example, requires that a puppy be at least eight weeks old before he can be taken from his mother. The laws vary as to who these laws apply to, with some focusing on dog breeders, kennels, and other commercial facilities. Other laws apply to anyone selling puppies, including those on Craigslist. Before buying any puppy, the more you know the better. If an unscrupulous person produces puppies and knows that he can sell them early at six to seven weeks or earlier and avoid paying for food, veterinary care, or other costs, then that cycle will continue. But if more people say no, then perhaps that cycle of human behavior can be changed. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. But why is this? Many studies performed have shown a resulting increase in aggression, over-reactivity, learning problems, fearfulness and anxiety in puppies removed too early. The puppy may throw a tantrum and feel hard done by, but the mother will be stern…although they always follow the discipline with a little nuzzling and some love :- This early and regular dishing out of discipline teaches the puppy about right and wrong, that actions have consequences and bad behavior is punished. If this learning is taken away, the puppy may develop behavioral issues and not accept direction and commands from its owner later in life. This can making training harder and ultimately lead to a less controllable dog. Also, the puppy will itself be the victim of too hard biting, so it gets some first hand experience of how painful it can be. This teaches the puppy that biting too hard hurts and results in bad consequences, so they slowly learn to control their bite. If taken away before these lessons are learnt, the puppy will bite too hard not knowing any better and this can be very dangerous as the puppy matures into a larger and stronger dog. You would have to go through the process of teaching bite inhibition yourself and this can be difficult and even painful work! They learn about hierarchy, canine body language, posturing and vocalizations barking, growling etc. They also learn about things like chasing and how to play correctly with other dogs, also how to interact fairly and safely with other dogs. By removing a puppy too soon, it will miss out on this vital education, will be under-socialized to other dogs and this can easily result in the puppy being fearful of other dogs or just plain not liking other dogs later in life. They Learn Tolerance To Touch A dog needs to be tolerant to touch for health and hygiene reasons and the safety of those around it. And a vet will need to touch a dog all over during a medical examination. So you really need your Labrador to be tolerant of humans touching it all over. A puppy will constantly be bumped, nudged, pawed and climbed all over during its time spent with its litter-mates. This teaches the puppy not to be afraid of touch, to get used to it and be more tolerant. But if a puppy is taken too young it misses out on all this touch and could grow up disliking touch in certain areas of its body. This can result in behavioral issues and even aggression when being touched which for obvious reasons is very undesirable. The things a puppy is socialized to during its first 12 weeks have a profound effect on its level of confidence and levels of fear later in its life. From about 7 weeks onwards, the puppy is very inquisitive and its willingness to approach unknown things and people is at its peak. This period declines at about 12 weeks of age and almost completely ends at 14 weeks where fear begins to creep in as a natural trait essential to survival if it lived in the wild. This is also the time when a Labrador puppy will form their strongest bonds with the humans they spends their time with. Bringing a puppy home at 8 weeks gives you just 4 weeks to do this, bringing one home at 10 weeks gives you only 2! A lack of decent socialization can result in the puppy being fearful of things, places and of human contact. This will put the puppy at greatest ease with the people and places where it will spend its future life. You may wish to bring your puppy home earlier than 8 weeks, but for all the reasons above, you should avoid this entirely. So be very suspicious of the breeder if this is their wish. This is so they themselves can provide a further week of socialization during this critical time and for the puppy to spend more time with their mother and littermates. So for the benefit of you and your Labrador, leave them with their mother and litter-mates until 8 weeks of age. Most dogs will happily bond with and love a new family if given the chance and can be valuable and loving companions. Reasons for rehoming early At 5 weeks old your puppy still far too immature, physically and psychologically, to leave their mother. Your six week old puppy is weaned, but they still have many doggy lessons to learn from both their mother and their littermates. Like so many aspects of puppy health and welfare, much hinges on whether or not you have found a good, responsible breeder. But those additional two weeks allow the breeder to complete the weaning process and make sure that the puppy is properly settled on solid food. From 6 — 8 weeks pups also still need to learn some important life lessons from their moms and littermates. There are legal requirements governing the sale of puppies in some 25 states in the USA. Most of these laws stipulate that puppies should be over 8 weeks old when they go to their permanent homes. In the UK, law related to puppy breeding, and the age at which they may be sold, was passed in .So what is the purpose of this legislation and why is 8 weeks so important? Why do kennel clubs recommend puppies are not re-homed before 8 weeks? Puppies just start finding their feet and moving around at around four weeks. The mother starts spending less time with them to help them become more independent. Their digestive systems are still immature and they need time to adjust to the solid food. And be protected from stress. With younger puppies, three or four weeks old, the situation is even more serious — and your puppy may die. We get many sad letters here from people that have bought puppies this young and whose puppies are very sick. This is where the lessons not to bite hard start. There are two issues here that need separating. Six weeks is a popular age for many people to want to bring home their Lab puppy. And breeders who sell very young puppies will often explain, quite truthfully, that their six week old puppy is already weaned. But in much of Europe, Australia and North America, most pedigree puppies are not sold until they are around 8 or even 9 weeks old. A few breeders may want puppies to be even older than this. Physically puppies can and do leave their mothers this young, and even younger, though not all such very young puppies will survive. Are they even weaned yet? If your breeder tells you your puppy is already weaned at six weeks old, they are almost certainly telling the truth. The six week old pup still has a very immature digestion and is vulnerable to stomach upsets. More reasons not to rehome pups at 6 weeks But there are other, very important, reasons to leave puppies with their mother for a couple more weeks. And with their brothers and sisters. Most of these have to do with their social and psychological development. This is when the mother teaches her pups most of their doggy manners. From 6 — 8 weeks puppies also really start playing with their littermates — and boisterously. They nip, bump and even roll each other over while they play. All puppies bite. This is a normal part of puppy play. But puppies have to learn how hard they can bite in fun, without actually harming anyone. And one of the most important ways that puppies learn not to bite is from their littermates. This is when puppy play gets rougher and tougher and the puppies teach one another not to bite too hard. During this time puppies also develop a sense of themselves and their bodies as separate from others. Furthermore, much like year old human toddlers, pups from weeks start testing the limits of their own independence. Behavior problems in puppies separated from their mothers too early A study published in compared reported behavioral problems in dogs rehomed at weeks, with those who went to their new homes at 8 weeks. The dogs who were separated from their litters early showed far more of the following behavior problems destructiveness. Why The 8-Week Minimum? Jul 25, Feb 3, This post may contain affiliate links. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Everyone loves a puppy; they are soft, adorable, pocket-sized, and full of fun. Typically, people try to bring their puppy home as soon as they can once it has been born, but that is not always best for the puppy. So, when can puppies leave their mom safely without having their development affected? Generally, eight weeks is the minimum age a puppy should leave its mom. Before eight weeks, the puppy is going through a serious developmental process both physically as well as mentally, and it needs its mom and littermates with it in order to go through these processes successfully. The puppy will experience its main developmental stages between one and two weeks, then again at around two to four weeks, then once more at about four to eight weeks. Allowing your puppy to go through these stages alongside their mother is essential to providing your puppy with the best shot at becoming a well-behaved and socialized adult dog. Read on to find out why eight weeks is the minimum age puppies should leave mom and what you can set your home up with to make their transition to your pack easier! A Quick Look At Puppy Development To understand why eight weeks is the minimum age puppies should leave their mom, it is important that you understand what happens during their key developmental stages and why having their mom with them is so beneficial. In this stage, the puppy is blind, deaf, has no teeth, and is completely reliant on its mom taking care of it by moving it around, providing it with milk, checking it for intestinal distress, cleaning it, and providing it body heat. To take a puppy away from its mom at this age is almost guaranteeing that the puppy will die from starvation, exposure, or simply giving up. Caring for a puppy without a mother at this age requires specialized vet training. Some breeds of dogs, like Labradors, will open their eyes and ears at about two weeks of age. This may make them seem capable of leaving their mother earlier than eight weeks. However, they still should not be removed until the first eight weeks are up. If you are caring for a mom and a litter of puppies, this stage is one of the most rewarding to watch. Puppies will start opening their eyes and recognizing shapes, light, and things moving around them. At this stage, the puppy is very sensitive to sensory changes. New smells, loud noises, and changes in the environment all have a serious impact on their development. It is vital that this stage is uninterrupted by being moved to a new home and that the puppy does not leave their mother. The puppy needs to be surrounded by the smell of its mother and littermates at this stage, and removing that from them will cause major distress that will affect their personality. They are strong enough to stand up and walk around unaided by their mom. At this point, mom is leaving the whelping box or puppy cage for longer periods of time, and her puppies are being introduced to solid puppy food! This is also the time when the puppies are socializing with their littermates intensely and learning what to do and what not to do. For example, they are learning that playing is super fun but biting hurts and they should not do that. Their mom is now in the role of disciplinarian and is teaching them manners. To an onlooker, it may seem strangely harsh, but she is communicating as gently as possible and punishing them in a way they will understand. During this time, the mom will start producing less milk and weaning her puppies. They will start eating solid puppy food more and more as they get less and less milk. Puppies at this age are explorers and are learning new sights and smells that are separate from their mom and littermates. Puppies start craving attention from humans at this stage. They will start being more independent of their littermates, sleeping through the night, and controlling their bladder and bowels, and they will stop constantly seeking out their mom. They are now ready to go to a new home. Between eight and twelve weeks of age, some puppies go through the fear stage. At the beginning of the eighth week, it is difficult to say whether the puppy is going to go through a fear stage. However, by ten weeks of age, a breeder or rescue center will know whether the puppy is in the fear stage or not. If the puppy is in the fear stage, then it is advisable to wait until the end of the twelfth week to send the puppy to the new home. This is because a big change like that during the fear stage can cause serious behavioral issues later on in life. What Is The Fear Stage? For some unknown reason, a puppy that undergoes the fear stage becomes afraid of everything new and old. The puppy may have had a favorite toy up until this point and all of a sudden, the toy terrifies them. The puppy may have loved its littermates and played with them nonstop, but suddenly, the puppy cowers in a corner when they are near. If you have adopted the puppy at eight weeks and they suddenly enter the fear stage, it is important that you work with them through it and do not abandon them. They will be afraid of loud noises, punishments, big changes, sharp smells, and strange objects. Here are some things you can do to ease their fear stage: Provide them with plenty of contact time. Love and cuddle them often throughout the day. Play with them. By physically playing games, they are distracted from their fear and can start to enjoy life in their new home. Start teaching simple commands to them. This helps to mentally distract them from their fear. It will also make their later training easier. Place their bed in a calm and quiet area of the house so they are not constantly disturbed by other people and pets. There are many things that you need to bring a puppy home. Some of them are essential, and others are more non-essential luxury items. However, there are a couple of things you absolutely should have prepared to make the transition from being with their mother and littermates to your home easier. First, take a soft toy and a blanket with you when you pick your puppy up, especially if they have a mother and littermates present. Do the same thing with the soft toy. I love Calmeroos Plush Heartbeat Toys because they come with a heat pack and emit a subtle heartbeat. Puppies can be dirty or flea-ridden when they arrive at your home. Sometimes, they can come from a well-known breeder or adoption center and be spotless but mess on the way home and need to be bathed and combed as soon as possible! This way, they will smell nice and fresh. If your puppy has fleas, then they need to be treated for them as soon as possible, as fleas can become life-threatening to puppies. Puppies at eight weeks are still in their chewing phase and will love to get their teeth into anything they can. Provide them with a chew toy or chew sticks that are safe for puppies. Have some food ready for them when they get home in a nice, stable stainless steel bowl like this one Amazon Basics Stainless Steel Dog Bowl. A stable bowl like this one will not be tipped over easily, which will not frighten them. Finally, remember that puppies mess, even if you are super diligent at their house training. Be sure to buy some Amazon Basics Dog and Puppy Pads to keep in their sleeping area to reduce the amount of clean-up you have to do. In many states, it is illegal to adopt a puppy younger than eight weeks old. However, some states do allow you to adopt from six weeks of age. It is always a good idea to check on your state law before adopting any animal to ensure you are abiding by the laws and do not run the risk of your puppy being taken away from you. What happens to puppies who leave their mom too early? Puppies who are separated from their mother and littermates too early are susceptible to a number of different behavioral and physical problems now and as they develop into adult dogs. Puppies who are separated too early can suffer from aggression and be prone to constant barking. Why could I only get my Chihuahua at 12 weeks old? These dogs grow more slowly than other breeds like Labradors , Golden Retrievers , and German shepherds. Breeders and dog lovers alike all agree they are too vulnerable to go to new homes until they are slightly bigger at 11 to 14 weeks old. Rolling Over On Puppies Leaving Mom… Eight weeks is the general consensus among professionals on when puppies can safely leave their mothers. At eight weeks old, puppies should be fully weaned and moving about independently. Between eight and ten weeks, they will be ready for a new home and a new adventure! Patellar Luxation The patella kneecap is a small bone that normally sits in a groove within the femur at the knee. In dogs with patellar luxation, the patella moves luxates outside of its assigned groove when the knee is flexed. This movement can cause discomfort and may eventually lead to arthritis. Many pets will skip or run on three legs when the patella is out of place. While some cases will correct themselves, in more severe cases the patella remains out of place. In mild cases, joint supplements such as fish oils and glucosamine or anti-inflammatory medications are used to control pain and prevent arthritis. In more severely affected dogs, surgery may be recommended. This causes pain and limping occur as the bone breaks down. In some cases, pain can be controlled with medications. In severe cases, surgery to remove the head of the femur may be recommended. Symptoms include visible debris, redness, odor, head shaking, and scratching. If any of these signs are noted, take your dog to the veterinarian for an exam. In most cases, ear infections can be resolved by cleaning the ear and with topical medications. Toy Poodles develop ear infections more often than most other breeds. This may be partly due to Poodles having long ear canals with excess curly hair to trap in moisture and debris. Trimming not plucking the hair from the ear may help reduce the incidence of ear infections. Dogs with chronic or recurring ear infections frequently have allergies that should be addressed. Dental Disease Dental disease is one of the most common conditions seen in dogs as they age, especially in small breeds like the Toy Poodle. Dental disease occurs when bacterial tartar and plaque build up, leading to inflammation of the tissues around the teeth—and eventually to tooth and bone decay. Daily tooth brushing with a dog-specific toothpaste is the best way to prevent dental disease, though some diets, treats, and chew toys also help prevent plaque and tartar. Tracheal Collapse Tracheal collapse occurs when the trachea commonly called the windpipe flattens. This happens due to weak cartilage rings or the sagging of a membrane along the trachea. Most cases are treated using medications, but in severe cases where breathing is impeded, surgery may be necessary. Toy poodles are likely genetically predisposed to tracheal collapse. When on walks, use a harness instead of a collar, as pressure on the trachea can cause further damage. The condition causes a deficiency in a protein called the von Willebrand factor, which is necessary for platelets to stick together and form a clot. In dogs that are deficient in this protein, the blood may have difficulty clotting, which can lead to bleeding from the nose, vulva, bladder, or gums. Additionally, dogs with this condition may bleed for a long time after trauma or surgery. If there is concern about VWD, a screening test may be performed. This test measures how long it takes for a small cut in the mouth to stop bleeding. If the time is longer than usual, additional testing is needed to confirm VWD. Because some dogs with VWD do not have notably prolonged bleeding until later in adulthood, blood levels of von Willebrand factor can be measured to help with diagnosis. Most veterinarians recommend testing for VWD prior to any planned surgery, including spays, neuters, and dewclaw removals. Puppies should be fed a diet formulated specifically for puppies or designated for all life stages. For Toy Poodle adults, dental-focused diets may be recommended by your veterinarian to help prevent dental disease. Toy poodle puppies, however, should eat three to four small meals per day on a consistent schedule to help maintain their blood sugar. Additionally, the feeding guide labels on the dog food provides valuable information for pet parents. Just remember: In small breeds like the Toy Poodle, calories in treats add up quickly. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in skin and joint supplements , fish oil, and even in some specially formulated dog foods. These fatty acids act as natural anti-inflammatories that help support the skin, coat, kidneys, joints, and heart. They are playful and self-confident when socialized at a young age. While relatively calm, Toy Poodles enjoy playtime and exercise with the family. The breed is gentle with children and other pets, though all interactions between dogs and kids should be supervised. Because these pups are so tiny, they can accidentally be hurt during playtime. Toy Poodles have lower exercise needs than many other dog breeds, but still benefit from a daily walk and play session. Toy Poodle Behavior Toy Poodles bond closely to their families and may develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. They can also be sensitive to stress, and sudden changes in the home environment may lead to gastrointestinal upset. Additionally, because Poodles are so smart, they need mental stimulation to keep themselves entertained—and out of trouble. Bored dogs are more likely to bark, jump, be destructive, or misbehave. Toy Poodle Training Toy poodles want to please their owners. Paired with their smarts, this makes them an easy breed to train. As always, training is most successful when based on positive reinforcement with praise and tasty treats. Fun Activities for Toy Poodle Obedience training. Pedigree and Bloodlines Toy poodles from champion bloodlines or with strong pedigrees will typically cost more than those without. This is because a high-quality pedigree is an indicator of potential show or breeding success, and these dogs often have a higher demand. Tips for Purchasing a Toy Poodle When considering the purchase of a toy poodle, there are several key factors you should take into account prior to making your decision. This section will discuss four essential considerations to guide you in your search for a healthy and happy pup. Research Reputable Breeders First and foremost, always select a reputable breeder for your toy poodle. Conduct thorough research by checking online reviews, asking for recommendations, and verifying awards and recognitions if applicable. Be cautious of red flags like: Irregularities in communication. If you want to get a show dog from champion bloodlines, expect to spend more. Purchasing the purebred Miniature or Toy type of Poodle is pricier than buying other dog breeds from a backyard dog breeder. The Standard Poodles are typically less expensive than Toy Poodles since they deliver more purebred puppies per litter. The price of a Standard Poodle, as well as Miniature and Toy Poodles, does not often change between male and female dogs, but larger dogs are associated with a higher maintenance cost compared to smaller Poodles. A premium price tag also usually means you have a high-quality Poodle puppy from purebred breeders which could save you a lot of money in the long run. Female Poodle: Which Is Better? Factors Affecting the Cost of a Poodle Puppy Many people find Poodles expensive, but what is it about Poodles that makes them so costly? Well, there are many reasons why these fluffy dogs cost thousands of dollars. The size, age, health, lineage, and AKC registration of a Poodle puppy are essential considerations when determining puppy prices. Here are other factors affecting the price of a purebred Poodle: Age: Younger purebred Poodle puppies are far more costly than older puppies on average. This is due to the high demand for young pups. Meanwhile, purchasing an adult Poodle could save you at the very least a few hundred dollars. Appearance: Purebred Poodles that sport rare Poodles coats color are priced higher than others. Purebred Poodle breeders dedicate years to learning how to breed high-quality puppies. Those that gained recognition for their hard work often put higher price tags on their Poodles than others. Bloodline: Since they are bred for exhibition, champion Poodles will be the priciest. These are the canines that compete in athletics and breed representation. Health Screenings: Purebred Poodles are at risk of health issues, such as seizures. This means Poodle breeders must take measures to ensure the health of their pups. As a result, they will have to invest additional money to nurture proper Poodle health. Registration Papers: Your Poodle must have the required registration papers to be registered with a kennel club. This list contains the significant factors that influence the price of a Poodle. When purchasing a Standard Poodle puppy, keep them in mind and any additional fees that may be associated with it. A purebred backyard breeder might ask you for things like reservation charges, pet delivery, vaccines, and pup accessories that are not included in the Standard Poodle price range. Poodle costs of adoption will vary depending on where you get your dog. If you choose a senior or special needs adult Standard Poodle, the fee is significantly reduced or even free entirely in these cases. Poodle puppies can be found in abundance in local shelters. If you decide to adopt a Poodle, you can be assured that you will get a dog that has been well-cared for, unlike the ones found in a puppy mill. Here is the list of the essential things that people who love Poodles must prepare for: Food and Treats: Poodles can be picky eaters. Hence, it is important to invest in the right kind of high-quality food upfront. Poodles will need a diet high in fats and proteins. Bed: Because the Poodles are active dogs, it will require a nice bed. The size of your Poodle will determine which mattress is appropriate. Crate: A crate is a must-have for required vet visits or crate-training your Poodle properly. This is a must-have item for Poodles that enjoy running and playing. Toys: Teething is unavoidable for young pups, and restlessness can lead to destructive behavior. These toys are a great approach to alleviating these concerns while keeping your dog happy. A slick brush to clear unkempt hair and knots, a metallic greyhound comb to remove tangles and separate hair strands, a blow dryer, grooming clippers, nail clippers, and a toothbrush to maintain proper oral hygiene are all you need. Furthermore, deworming is a crucial step in keeping healthy pups. Initial Vaccine Shots: If you opt to purchase an unvaccinated Poodle puppy, you will be responsible for the expense of their first round of vaccinations. This is also another way of keeping your Poodle healthy. Neutering and Spaying: If you purchase Standard Poodle puppies, most likely, it is still intact. It is suggested that the puppy be spayed or neutered between six and nine months. Microchip: A microchip, about the size of a rice grain, should be implanted on your Poodle. This can be scanned by vets or other canine specialists for your contact info, health records, and health problems. Miscellaneous Supplies: Useful goods such as poop scoopers, cleaning materials, and urine pads could make Poodle care much more manageable. Agility classes are another fantastic entertainment opportunity for your toy poodle. This breed is a miniature athlete, excelling in agility courses. However, the costs of caring for your pup may be more or less based on the area you live in and the things your dog needs in any given month. For example, you might not need to buy cleaning supplies or get your dog groomed every month, but the above estimates should give you a good idea of what you could be spending. Costs such as dog walking, obedience classes, pet sitters, and boarding facilities can add up fast. If you choose not to invest in pet insurance, you should create an emergency fund for unforeseeable incidences. You can cut down on some of the high costs by shopping for the best store to buy your food and supplies. You can even take grooming lessons or watch YouTube videos for tips on how to groom your toy poodle yourself to save on high grooming costs. Use couponing apps for your phone or internet browser to find the best deals on pet supplies. Honey is a great Chrome extension that finds all the best coupon codes for nearly any website. Rakuten is another extension you can use to earn cash back on your purchases. We consulted different breeders and pet adoption centers for the most accurate price range. During the interviews, we collected data on what affects the cost of each dog despite them being the same breed and the recurring costs of owning a toy poodle. By the end of the post, you will clearly see how much financial investment a toy poodle is. Like any other pet, the toy poodle requires a considerable financial commitment upfront and throughout their life. Several variables affect how much a toy poodle costs, which explains the huge price variation. A few factors that justify the price variation are: Color Some toy poodle colors are rarer than others. Some people may be looking for a toy poodle in a standout shade that is not easy to find. Since there is a small number of these special colored puppies, their price will increase. For example, Phantom will likely be pricier than others like black, silver, or brown, which are more frequently available. Whether You Are Adopting, Buying, or Rehoming Rehoming a pet is different from adopting one in that you either acquire a puppy that has been abandoned or are given one by someone unable to keep the dog for their reasons. On the other hand, you can receive a pet through adoption by going to a dog adoption facility. Although there may still be a fee to fund their time at the facility, it will usually be considerably cheaper than purchasing one. Additionally, your adoption price will probably include vaccinations, neutering, and microchipping costs, saving you a few more bucks. Buying puppies is usually expensive because the breeder has already incurred the cost of veterinary care and breeding the pups to ensure they come out perfectly. Lineage The bloodline of a toy poodle puppy is another significant factor that affects the pricing. Puppies are more priced if anyone in their line of descent has received any kind of recognition, say a competition. Costs differ between canines with a clean medical record and those with underlying or inherited health issues. Pets with any health issues will be cheaper than those in tip-top condition. Breeder If you buy from a reputable, high-end breeder, prices will generally be higher. This is because the breeder incurs significant costs related to maintaining their business, which is paid for by selling puppies. It is assumed that a high-end breeder will produce pups of a higher caliber than their cheaper counterparts. While this argument may have some truth, it is not always true. You can also get pups that are healthy from a start-up breeder. In addition to having less going on than an established breeder, new breeders must set fair prices to attract more clients. Extra Costs Of Owning A Toy Poodle The decision to get a new puppy is exhilarating, but frequently people fail to consider the financial obligations that come with it adequately. In fact, you may take this as your starting point. You might not realize how expensive it is to raise a puppy. Here are some extra costs to factor in your decision to get a toy poodle: Spaying or neutering Consider having your dog spayed or neutered if you intend to use it for breeding. Spaying a pet is more expensive than neutering it. Toys And Treats The well-being of your dog depends on toys. Negative behaviors can be delayed by using toys. Treats help reinforce good behavior in your furry buddy. Deworming Deworming is another factor that should not be overlooked when considering the additional costs of owning a pet. In fact, puppy age is the age range most susceptible to worm infection. To keep your dog healthy, ensure you deworm your puppy thrice a year. Vaccinations Immunizations are crucial because they will protect your puppy from illnesses and infections. Your veterinarian will determine the cost of the puppy immunizations. The first shot is administered between 6 and 8 weeks, while the second is a week or two later. Suppose you buy your toy poodle from a reputable breeder or rescue organization. In that case, the vaccinations will already be done before you pick up your new pet. Remember, you must give your dog a booster vaccination every year. Training Costs Depending on your demands, puppy training sessions might range in price. If you want an intensive training program that will teach your furry buddy all the essentials in a matter of days, that will be more expensive. Private lessons are also more expensive than group training. Services for dog walking and dog daycare are commonly available. Ensure you know what works for your pet because not every dog should go to doggie daycare, especially if they have trouble mingling with other dogs or lack social skills. However, there are occasions when it is vital to avoid boredom and give dogs that would otherwise spend long days alone the human-canine connection they require. All in all, do not leave your pup alone for long hours. Apart from avoiding a mess in your house, your dog needs to go outside and play. While making your decision, understand that dog walking is cheaper than daycare. Insurance Pet insurance will help you save money on your total veterinary expenses if your dog gets hurt or becomes ill. If you have pet insurance, you may relax knowing that you will be covered financially if your dog or cat is sick or wounded. Without pet insurance, you face the risk of being hit with a hefty bill in the unfortunate event of the worst-case scenario because veterinary visits have unexpected costs. Make sure the service provider you choose caters to the specific breed you have, covers any underlying issues your pet may have, and is within your budget. Where You Live The cost of a puppy also depends on where you reside; in California, for example, since it is among the most expensive states, the price for a toy poodle will be higher than in Massachusetts due to the drastically lower cost of living there. You may opt to get your pup from a cheaper state; however, you also need to account for the price of getting the toy poodle puppy there and back to your residence. In the excitement of getting ready to bring a new puppy into your home, it can be easy to overlook how much of a financial commitment the dog involves. Making a budget for your new animal family member is a great way to prepare yourself for unforeseen costs. Less - The Toy Poodles have a shoulder height of up to 25 cm 10 in and weigh kg lbs. Poodles are very elegant in appearance. They have a long, narrow muzzle, slight stop point at which the forehead meets the muzzle , dark eyes, and wide ears. Toy Poodles have flat backs, straight, docked tails and small, oval feet. Their length is approximately the same as their height. The Toy Poodle is sensitive, intelligent, lively, playful, proud, and elegant. It bonds closely with family and makes a great companion. Toy Poodles are very smart, obedient, and graceful, which makes them one of the most popular pets in the world. The Toy Poodle is bouncy, alert, and usually eager to play. Toy Poodles are more energetic than Standard Poodles, and more likely to bark. In 18th and 19th century Europe, the Poodle served a wide variety of purposes, including duck hunting, guiding, and later circus performing, from whence the modern grooming style likely arose. The Poodle became a popular pet for the French aristocracy, and in time was officially adopted as the national dog. Poodles were imported to America in the 20th century. The origins of the poodles are still discussed with a dispute over whether the poodle descends from the old French Barbet breed or from Germany as a type of water dog. Giving your dog time and attention, making sure they have plenty of toys and opportunities to run around and play outside, and working on training regularly are all things that you can do to keep your dog entertained each day. It is a good idea to plan ahead and consider starting a savings account, where you can put away a portion of your paycheck so you can pay for unexpected vet costs. Your dog might end up damaging something in your household as they learn obedience training, so you may incur extra costs unexpectedly for this reason. These are just more reasons to consider maintaining a savings account for your dog. Owning a Toy Poodle on a Budget If you can find a Toy Poodle for free or at a rescue center, utilize state-funded service programs like those for spaying and neutering , and if you opt for less expensive commercial food, you can take care of a Toy Poodle on a budget. However, costs should never be cut when it comes to checkups, vaccinations, illness treatment, and items for nutrition and comfort. Learn how to potty and obedience train your dog yourself instead of hiring a professional trainer. You can find training books at the library and training videos online for guidance. Instead of utilizing a grooming service, buy clippers and a good brush, and do the grooming yourself. Instead of buying expensive toys, make them out of old clothes and unbreakable objects that you find around the house. Go on long walks rather than gas-guzzling drives. Spend time at the dog park instead of using electricity at home watching television. Make your own doggy treats utilizing food in your kitchen instead of buying commercial ones. Daily exercise, a proper diet, and plenty of attention will go a long way. Regular checkups can help catch problems before they become too expensive to address. Conclusion Toy Poodles are adorable little dogs that deserve plenty of love and attention throughout their lives. bernedoodle puppies for sale canada - Boxweiler Highlights Boxweilers are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Boxer or Rottweiler parents The main colors of the Boxweiler coats are fawn, black, brindle, white, and brown. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. These pups have short coats, though they are still moderate shedders. They are not hypoallergenic dogs. Boxweilers need at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. The Boxweiler may prefer to be mostly around adults and older kids who know how to play gently. Boxweilers can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. Boxweiler History The Boxweiler is believed to have been bred sometime in the s by crossing Boxers and Rottweilers together. What we do know is that both the Boxer and Rottweiler breeds have great histories. The ancestors of modern Boxers were used for many tasks, from hunting to guarding and herding cattle. This breed served as messenger dogs in World War I, carrying supplies and acting as guard and attack dogs. Rotties were often used to pull carts and served as guard dogs. Boxweilers are fairly likely to inherit many of the traits that have made their parent breeds so revered throughout history. The Rottweiler was inducted later in .Boxweiler Size As the Boxweiler is a mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to its size. That said, as a mix between Boxer and Rottweiler parents, you can expect the Boxweiler to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 27 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than normal. Boxweiler Personality Boxweilers are very loving and loyal dogs with lively personalities. This usually means they love running around and playing games like fetch with their pet parents. Even with their high energy, they are also affectionate and love to cuddle inside the house with their human counterparts. These large pooches are working dogs and enjoy fulfilling that purpose in one way or another. That means they can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. They will bark or alert their owners at the first sign of trouble. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted bad habits. They can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They also tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. The Boxweiler may be best suited for larger families with larger homes rather than small apartments. Boxweiler Health The Boxweiler mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Boxer and the Rottweiler also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Boxweilers suffer from include: joint dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability The Boxweiler is a very active, high-energy dog whose intelligence allows for relatively easy training as long as it is done with consistency and patience. They enjoy a good cuddle as much as running after a ball and playing fetch. They are healthy dogs overall but having an understanding of some of the conditions that the parent breeds are susceptible to, will help you understand your dog as it ages. While they are not aggressive dogs, they are wary of strangers and other animals, so proper socialization as puppies is essential. The Boxweiler tends to gain weight and needs plenty of exercise. The Boxweiler will only drool depending on which parent it takes after. The Rottweiler tends to drool, whereas the Boxer does not. If the Boxweiler is more alike to the Boxer parent , it is less likely to drool, but if it takes after the Rottweiler parent, it could be a drooler. The Boxweiler may prefer to be the only pet in the household. If the Boxweiler is properly socialized as a puppy with other pets, they will accommodate and adapt well with other animals. However, the Boxweiler is a herding dog and will instinctively chase other animals, and therefore the household might benefit from keeping the Boxweiler as the only pet. If they are kept busy and not left alone for long periods, the Boxweiler will grow into a happy and well-adjusted dog that will make an excellent family pet. However, the Boxweiler would do best with older children that know how to play gently with this large dog. Children should be taught how to approach dogs in a gentle and non-threatening manner so the dog will feel comfortable and become an eager and energetic companion. The Boxweiler more than likely will have the same instincts and therefore, will do best in a home as the only pet. However, if properly socialized as a puppy, they could adapt to living with other pets, including cats. They might have a predisposition to gain weight, so following a strict schedule and not leaving food out throughout the day would work best. Coming from the Rottweiler and the Boxer, which are both working dogs, the Boxweiler needs to be kept busy with walks and play. Allowing these large dogs room to run in a yard makes them less suitable for apartments. Training should be accomplished with persistence and firmness tempered with praise and positive reinforcement. Consistent training and lots of socialization, while they are puppies, is critical. Trimming nails carefully, cleaning ears , and brushing teeth are all common grooming habits every dog needs to keep them healthy. Brushing their teeth regularly to avoid dental issues combined with frequent grooming will also help your dog to maintain its health. Minor Conditions Rottweilers might experience hypothyroidism , lower eyelid droop , cataracts and allergies. While Boxers are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, they are also prone to bowel disease and corneal erosion. Serious Conditions The Rottweiler is prone to hip dysplasia , bone cancer , heart disease and bloat or stomach dilatation. The Boxer might also experience hip dysplasia, heart disease, as well as bloat or stomach dilation like the Rottweiler, but are also susceptible to irregular heartbeat and occasional problems with spinal cord disease and brain tumors. The Boxweiler has the potential to inherit some of these health issues from its parents. Therefore, the vet will check for joint dysplasia, heart disease, bone cancer, and bloat. Male vs Female Most dog breeds have minor physical differences between male and female puppies. Like most species, the females tend to be a little lighter and smaller than the males. It is thought that females tend to be less aggressive and more affectionate than the males, but this subject is up for debate. The choice of using your dog for breeding purposes will make a difference as well between the male and the female. Most dogs become calmer and less aggressive or less energetic after surgery. The primary differences between all dogs, regardless of the sex, are based on how the puppies have been raised and socialized. Final Thoughts on the Boxweiler The Boxweiler is a beautiful, loyal, intelligent, and energetic hybrid of the Rottweiler and Boxer. A firm but kind and gentle hand is the best way to handle these large and sensitive dogs. Properly socializing them to smaller animals and children, while they are puppies, will give them the best possible outcome. Online discussions through social media or attending dog shows and contacting local and national dog clubs could provide you with further assistance. Good in an apartment? Photo by Doglime. Both parent breeds were bred to herd and defend against animals and humans. So training and socialization are two of the most important lessons to teach your puppy! So start as soon as you get home by teaching him or her the rules of the house by using positive reinforcement only. The best commands you can train your puppy on are to sit, stay, come, and lay down. When you are training, it is important to never give up on a command that you give! The moment you start allowing your puppy to not obey your commands is the day you give him the right to be the pack leader. The Rottweiler and Boxer are notorious for being hard-headed, and stubborn! So if you are having trouble training your commands into your puppy just know that it is not how your training your puppy but rather. It is just in their genetics to try and not follow your commands. So when training be firm but never heavy-handed. The best training methods are firm but gentle and never give in on command. Take your puppy out into the city whenever you are out. Let your puppy experience the sounds, smells and sights, this is getting your puppy used to the strange sound smells and sights. He also should be meeting different people and animals, on his daily walks. This gets him to understand that he needs to learn the proper temperament and manners in greeting other animals and more importantly humans. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Although they are not common, it may be possible to find Boxweilers in shelters throughout the United States. You may also be able to find a Boxweiler through a Boxer or Rottweiler breed-specific rescue. They are smart and very trainable, provided they have an experienced owner who knows how to bring out the best in them. Boxweilers are playful and affectionate toward their families but can be wary of strangers. This makes them excellent watchdogs and protectors. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their large size does not make them a great choice for families with small children. Although Boxweilers are not known to be aggressive toward their families, smaller children can make them nervous. Young children may also not understand how to play gently with such a large dog. Boxweilers also need families who will not leave them alone for long periods. The Boxweiler becomes very attached to its family and can become destructive when left alone for too long. However, for the right family, the Boxweiler can make a wonderfully playful, and dedicated companion. They love to run around and play as much as they love to cuddle on the couch at the end of the day. The Boxweiler is a large dog descended from two breeds who were originally hunting dogs so they may not be the best choice if you have other smaller pets. They also tend to prefer to be the only pet in the family. This being said, they can get along with other dogs and even cats as long as they are introduced to them at a young age. Because of their size, they should always be monitored while around smaller animals. They have a good deal of energy and need plenty of firm training due to their size. Along with these considerations, you should also be aware of their potential health problems, grooming needs, and diet requirements. Read on to learn more about what you can expect if you plan on bringing a Boxweiler into your family. They require high-quality food for large breeds to meet their energy requirements. You should talk to your veterinarian for recommendations for your dog based on their specific health conditions, life stage, and activity level. Because of their tendency toward weight gain, you should limit the number of treats you give your Boxweiler. You should also avoid giving them table scraps. The best way to help them maintain a healthy weight is to stick to a regular feeding schedule and make sure they get plenty of exercise. They do not do well in a small apartment or when left alone for a long time. They love games like fetch and chasing a ball. The Boxweiler also enjoys long walks and time outside with their family. If you have a large, fenced yard and a family that likes being outside, that would be perfect for a Boxweiler. Mental exercise is also important for this breed. They are intelligent and need mental stimulation. Interactive games and food puzzles are perfect choices to keep their brain active. There is a slight tendency to be stubborn, but an experienced trainer can overcome this obstacle and bring out the best in your Boxweiler. They like to please their owners and enjoy the challenge that learning new commands provides them with. The Boxweiler must receive training from puppyhood as they are large dogs who need some discipline and training to ensure they will be great pets. Their coat is short and requires brushing once or twice per week, perhaps more frequently during shedding seasons. Rottweilers do drool frequently, so if your Boxweiler takes after their Rottweiler parent, they may do so as well. Occasional baths may be helpful if your dog begins to smell.
