To understand that we have to look at the genetic difference between black and chocolate Labs. Labrador Retriever Color Genetics Both types get their color from a pigment called eumelanin. Labs with lots of eumelanin pigment in their coat are black. If they have a little less, they appear brown instead. We use letters to tell each place apart — a bit like giving each locus its own zip code! The B locus is home to a pair of genes called B genes. There are two types of B gene your Lab can get in their pair: One we call big B — it contains an instruction to make lots of eumelanin, and causes a black Labrador coat. And one we call little b — it contains an instruction for less eumelanin, and causes a brown or chocolate coat. Big B is a dominant gene, and little b is a recessive gene. Dominant genes to switch off, or override, recessive genes. So dog with BB genes will be black, because he has two genes for a black coat. And a Bb dog will be black too, because the dominant B genethe recessive b gene. Only a dog with a matching pair of bb genes will express the instruction for less eumelanin in their coat, and be brown. Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog with two copies of the b gene will actually look brown. But the dominance of the black color enabled our chocolate friends to remain hidden and rare with the breed, for many decades. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. In fact, it would take two black Labs both carrying the little b gene to produce chocolate puppies. Like this: Statistically, one quarter of their litter would be chocolate colored. And of course, some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. These genes are located at the E locus. How Yellow Overrides Black and Chocolate Only the little e gene can mask the instructions for black or chocolate fur. There are three possible combinations of E gene that a dog can inherit. The breed is easy to manage, and it includes essential grooming responsibilities such as: Brush their coat at least two or three times a week to make their skins look shiny and beautiful. You want to avoid their fur from getting tangled, especially if they take on the coat of Pomeranians. Keep their eyes and ears clean. Using a soft towel, wipe any debris or discharge around their eyes, to prevent health complications from arising. Brush their teeth regularly to prevent plaque from accumulating and tooth decay. Give them regular baths, as necessary. Doing this prevents ticks from hiding within its coat. The Pomeranian and Pug cross is easy to manage, and you only need to be reminded of these important details for their grooming: Dedicate time to regularly brush their coat, using a metal-pin slicker brush, to help detangle their coat. Bathe them regularly, especially during the allergy seasons of the Pomeranian crossed with a pug. Make sure to use products which are gentle on the skin. Clip their nails, especially since the Pug mixed with Pomeranian are hyper and playful dogs. You want to avoid any situation of being unnecessarily cut. However, there may be some instance when they suffer from seasonal allergies and dry skin, which can nevertheless be treated. However, there are some health problems common to small dogs, such as the Pug and Pomeranian Cross which you need to watch out for. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome — this is a condition which affects the upper airways of dogs, common in most flat faced and short-nosed dogs. This may be present in your Pomeranian mixed with a Pug if the dominant gene your pup will have is that of the Pugs. Here are also some health problems which may be particular to the Pomeranian Pug Mix: Dry Skin — this can be caused by allergies, parasites, or other medical disorders. For this specific kind of breed, its source should come from allergies. Left untreated, the skin condition worsens to atopic dermatitis and lead to secondary skin infections. Symptoms — the symptoms are easy to identify such as itchiness, flaking, scabs, and hair loss. Prevention — feed them with high quality and balanced diet, and groom them regularly to prevent any buildup of debris and dirt. Eye Infections — Some allergies can cause eye discharge, which is results in mucus-like substances forming around the eye and getting in the eye. A tri Labradoodle may be black or chocolate. This is Tawnee who is a black tri. Sable A sable Labradoodle has each single hair in their coat banded by color. Each strand of hair has two colors. The tip of the strand will be either black or brown and the color at the root may be red, tan or apricot. Because the top inch or so of the strands of hair are either black or chocolate, at birth a sable Labradoodle will appear to be a black or chocolate dog. Once the strands start to grow out, the change color becomes visible. The amount of time it takes to see the second color varies from birth through to about six weeks of age. Since Labradoodles do not shed, at least as little as any dog is capable of not shedding, they do not generally grow new strands of hair. Sadly, this coat color tends to fade over time. The nose color is to be black. This color develops over the first years. Nose pigment should be rose. Chalk This color is a white looking color. However, if you were to compare it to a true white, it would appear to be more chalk-white in color. Nose pigment is black. Black Black Labradoodles should be solid in color with no sprinklings of other colors throughout the coat. Their pigment color should be black. Silver These pups would start out black and their silver coloring develops over the first few years of their lives. The color range can be anywhere from a light pewter to a dark charcoal. Silver dogs need to have black pigmentation. The blue coat will develop over the first few years. The color should be solid once they are full grown. It should be a dark-medium smoky blue. Lavender This color has a smoky lavender chocolate coloring that almost gives off a pink to lilac appearance. These pups are born chocolate and will come into their beautiful lavender coats over the first few years. Their pigmentation should be rose in color. Parti These dogs need to be at least fifty percent white, with spots or patches of any other above solid color. Full or partial saddles are acceptable, but are not preferred. Ticking in the white of the coat is acceptable but not preferred. The nose pigment needs to match the solid color. Any combination of acceptable colors is allowed. Nose pigment should follow requirements listed above based on the solid base color. White mismarks can be very small or very heavy, or anywhere in-between.
