These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Can you help? Five steps to stop your puppy crying at night 1. Crate training a puppy can really help with that, as it gives them a secure and comfortable place of their own. How long should you let a baby or puppy cry for before you go to comfort them? You have to consider two things: first, will leaving them alone be negative or positive? And second, how long should you leave them for? The stress can then potentially bring on scratching, chewing, diarrhoea… and a psychological problem with getting in to a crate even in other contexts. Leave them for five mins or so, then walk in comfort them with stroking and a calm voice. If the crying starts up again, go back — but not too quickly Letting a dog cry for long enough to get stressed or upset is counter-productive, but so is coming back to him immediately every time they cry — if you do that, your pet is effectively giving you a dose of dog recall training! A few minutes is plenty to stop that from happening, though; just go back and comfort them again, and then leave the room as you did before. You can also put a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel in the crate. Or you can purchase something called the Calmeroos Puppy Toy that simulates a heartbeat and has a warming pack, which can help the puppy feel calm and safe. Place the crate where your puppy can see you. Usually, this is in your bedroom at night. There are many types of dog crates. I have some of my crates over a dozen years. My current puppy Millie loves her wire crate now and even goes into it on her own to rest. Buy a wire crate that has a divider, so that you can move it as the puppy grows. Most come with a plastic tray at the bottom that slides out and can be cleaned. We bought a Midwest LifeStages crate for Linus over 15 years ago and use the exact same crate today. So the plastic tray becomes handy then. One of my golden retriever rescues, Riley, was about six months old when he came to me. He started to pull the blanket in, chewing little pieces off. It turned out he liked being in the wire crate without a cover within a few days and settled down quickly to rest. Plastic Kennel Some dogs like the security of a plastic kennel. I have those too and generally just use them for the dogs while traveling in the minivan. When I first purchased a plastic kennel, I waited until the dogs were full-grown. I love them when I take the dogs somewhere, such as to a hotel room. In addition to being ruined, your precious furry companion could get loose and into trouble if he chews his way out. The first day, your pup is just getting used to being with you. If your puppy plays with toys, you can throw a toy into the crate to lure him into it. Leave the door open so he can go in and out. Calmly praise him when he enters. Ignore when he exits. Once he knows some commands like sit, you can also exercise his mind before he goes in. In all you do with your puppy, you want to set him up to succeed! As stated above, make sure that the crate is a welcoming place with a towel or blanket. Also, a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel or a Calmeroos Puppy Toy can help. A ticking clock placed outside the crate helps some pups relax. Even the soothing sounds of soft music or white noise or a relaxation sound such as ocean waves can help some puppies be calm. A shih tzu puppy I had appropriately named Cuddles really settled down when I played a sound machine of ocean waves. You can get an app on most smartphones today to play such soothing sounds. Over the next days and weeks with your puppy, you can work on luring him in the crate. Gradually build time. We have an extensive step-by-step guide detailing how to slowly introduce the crate to a new puppy. I recommend the Extreme Kong. I freeze it when some mashed dog food about a quarter full. It made his training so much easier. Some let out a little whimper, others have a full barking session, and everything in between. Puppies are such small, helpless creatures. Their distress is real. Puppies cry in their crates for many reasons such as: loneliness; fear; boredom; having to potty; or missing their littermates. You can take him out a few times if he keeps crying. But after three or four times of trying to get him to potty, I let the puppy cry themselves out. So, a two-month old puppy can hold it for about three hours overnight. Remember: it will get better. The vast majority of young puppies adapt to a crate. There are other things you can do to help your pup to adapt to his crate, such as plug in an Adaptil diffuser a dog-appeasing pheromone near the crate. An adult dog that I adopted had major separation anxiety. Spraying his bedding with one of these seemed to help. Many have had success with the ThunderEssence spray. There are some methods that were used in the past to try to make a puppy quiet down in his crate. Banging On the Crate. Although some puppies may quiet down, it will make the crate a terrifying place the pup will avoid. Using the Crate as Punishment. You can always deal with the wayward chewing by giving the pup more exercise or redirecting him to an appropriate toy or chewy. Hollering at the Puppy to Be Quiet. Doing this can make a new puppy fear you. Spraying the Puppy With Water. This method was used years ago by many puppy owners. Some still use it. Shaking a Can Filled With Pennies. Brachycephalic dogs have shorter snouts, but the soft palate at the back of their throat remained exactly the same through the generations and can appear enlarged. Owners of these breeds should be particularly aware of dog snoring and what it can mean. This leads to loud snoring, sometimes even when awake, which we will talk about later. The condition is called nasal stenosis, a congenital condition that can obstruct nasal passages and restrict breathing. These are called turbinates or sometimes a naval concha and create a large surface area. Turbinates have lots of interesting functions: Add warmth and humidity to the air we breathe in and protect the lungs from cold, dry air Provide a filter to remove pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and dust Give a larger surface area for smell sensors As you can imagine, in dogs, these turbinates are extensive to give a great sense of smell. The spongy bone plates also provide a great heat exchange mechanism for the body, helping dogs and other canids conserve water. Turbinates let them chase for a long time and live in dry deserts or the cold arctic. Bad breathing difficulties can be distressing for the dog and you might think about visiting a vet. One thing we should clear up, before we go any further, is that for the purposes of snoring in this article, we are talking about dogs who are asleep. Sometimes people ask about why do dogs snore while awake. It could be because you have a brachycephalic dog, as described above. However, there are many other reasons why dogs can make snoring sounds when awake. Again, most of these are due to restricted air flow. Any dog that is making snoring sounds while awake needs to be thoroughly checked over by a qualified vet within the next day or so to have him checked over. And, if he seems unwell or his breathing is labored, take him in right away. An obstruction may be a symptom of a nasty infection or more serious type of blockage. Sometimes, your dog may have a foreign body wedged up its nose. These could be grass seeds or other plant materials he picked up on his walk. These will block his nose and make him snore. If your dog is sneezing a lot or rubbing his nose with discomfort, he could have something stuck up there. A blockage may also be accompanied by nasal discharge. Take a look and, if there is something is stuck up his nose, maybe it is time to see the vet to have it removed. In most cases, a blocked nose is the result of a build up of mucous as a result of a respiratory infection, together with inflammation of the airways. Dog Snoring Caused by Infections Like people, dogs are susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Infections like Kennel Cough — a kind of canine flu — may cause airways to become blocked and inflamed, and can trigger temporary snoring. If that is the case, the snoring should clear up once the dog recovers. Snoring and Dog Allergies Just like people, some dogs suffer from allergies. This is often accompanied by a clear and watery nasal discharge. If it is an allergy, your vet can prescribe medications to relieve her symptoms and, in turn, reduce the snoring. Cigarette Smoke and Snoring Dogs living with cigarette smokers may be more prone to snoring. They are also at greater risk of developing allergies and respiratory infections. Medications That Cause Dog Snoring Sometimes, you might notice that your dog only developed snoring when he started a course of medication. Could the medicine be to blame? It could, because some medicines have side effects including restricted airways. Pain relievers, and some other medicines, may cause the throat to relax more than usual, which can trigger a bout of the snores. If you think that medicines may be the cause, check with your vet whether medication is the possible cause of doggy snoring. If your dog needs the medication, then you will probably have to live with the snoring, although your vet might be able to treat the symptoms. Another very common cause of snoring in dogs is obesity. Just as with humans, being overweight can trigger the condition. Dog Snoring Caused by Obesity Probably the most common reason for snoring in Labradors and many other breeds is a weight problem. Your dog does not have to be grossly obese for this to happen. Just being a little overweight may be enough of a trigger to start a dog snoring In a very overweight dog, pads of fat may be deposited around the throat, and these can interfere with the airflow. And, if your slightly overweight, snoring dog seems otherwise perfectly well, then reducing his weight a little is a good starting point in the battle against snoring. Losing weight can also prevent a range of other health problems, and is usually worth doing. Nasal Polyps and Tumors Just like humans, dogs can get nasal polyps, small pink growths in the nose. They can grow large enough to obstruct air flow and cause snoring. Quite often, they can cause distressing nose bleeds. It is definitely worth getting them checked by a vet. Apart from causing snoring, even when your dog is awake, they can be a sign of tumors. Removing them can stop snoring and, if they were a sign of tumors, might allow your vet to catch the condition early. Nasal tumors commonly affect older dogs and some specific breeds such as German Shepherds. Treating them can involve surgery or radiotherapy, ideally before they become large and malignant. What do you do then? Dogs that Snore for No Reason For many snoring dogs, like my Labrador, Tess, who is slim and healthy, there is often no apparent cause. A bit like humans, really! So,what if your dog is fit and able to run and play normally without breathing noisily. You look and see no no signs of any obstruction in his airway, and no discharge or other symptoms of infection. In this case, there may be no cause for the canine snoring. You may think it is cute or funny to hear your Labrador snoring. You may find it annoying. Especially if he shares your bedroom But what does it actually mean? And why do some dogs snore whilst others never do? The vibration arises when there is some kind of minor or major obstruction in the dogs airway. Too much tissue for example, or tissue that is too floppy may cause a narrowing of the throat. It can and does however, occur in dogs with normal muzzles like our Labradors. As you will know if you have a snorer in your home. Does obesity cause snoring? Probably the most common reason for a Labrador to snore is obesity. Your dog does not have to be grossly overweight for this to happen. In an overweight dog, pads of fat are deposited around the throat which interfere with the airflow. You might want to consider taking a few pounds off him. As a bonus, he will also feel better, be more active and in better general health. Talking to your vet about snoring But maybe your Labrador is very slim and still snores the house down every night. Does it matter? And what can you do about it anyway? There could be a number of other reasons why your dog is snoring, but if you are not aware that he has one of these problems, or if the snoring is unusual for him, or is getting worse, it is a good idea to get him checked over by the vet Allergies and other causes of dogs snoring Just like people, some dogs suffer from allergies. Another reason to get a quick vet check for your snoring dog. It goes without saying that you should have him checked immediately if there is a thick or bloody discharge from either nostril! But for some dogs there are ways to improve the situation Remedies for dogs snoring You might find it helpful to adjust the position your dog sleeps in. One of the best solutions for mild snorers, is to make sure that your Labrador is encouraged to curl up, rather than sprawl on his back. A round or oval bed is ideal for this.
