black puppy german shepherd

He is great with children of all ages but because of his size he we would not rehome him with young children. Smokey has not had a lot of socialisation with other dogs but has never shown aggression towards them. He will chase cats however. Smokey loves people but will still bark at the postman like any good GSD. He was actually pensioned off from the police at 18 months for being gun shy so as you would guess, his biggest fear is fireworks. This big, strong lad will need a strong owner when walking him and he would benefit from some lead work. Barney Barney is a 9 year young, entire, handsome male. Poor Barney is looking for a new home as yet another dog victim of a relationship breakdown. Barney is very fit for his age and when out walking mum could not hold him. On initial assessment with his dad, it was apparent that Barney is quite willing to socialise with other large dogs when off lead, but when called back would go deaf until he was ready. When our assessor entered his home, he acted in typical GSD fashion. She did not feel threatened in any way. Barney was initially taken into foster but it became apparent that whilst he may socialise with other dogs outside of the home, he would need to be the only dog, which appeared to be down to jealousy more than anything. Barney needs a home where he will be the only dog with experienced GSD owners who are used to large confident males. He would love space to run but most importantly a home to call his own again. Thor - Bristol Thor is a 6 year neutered male who was taken to the vets to be put to sleep because he was no longer required for stud duty! The vet contacted us for our help and neutered him for us. Thor is very friendly and obedient, and is currently on a program to increase his weight and gain condition. Not good with other male dogs and we would not rehome with young children as we do not know his full history. This lovely boy just needs a home to call his own and be given the love and security he deserves. Charlie - Bristol Charlie is about 3 years old. He came into the rescue from a pound with a large chain around his neck where his days were numbered. He is a big strong dog, and very confident. It is apparent he has had human contact but no proper guidance or leadership, in fact he has probably been spoilt and allowed to rule the roost. Despite being in kennels he has been very friendly. Charlie just needs an experienced GSD home with no children where he will be given the boundaries and guidance he needs. Sookie - Devon This cheeky face belongs to 10 month unspayed Sookie. She was bought up with young children but we would rehome with older children only as she is quite boisterous. She is good with other large dogs off lead. She did live happily with another dog for 5 months. Sookie is very energetic and exuberant, and will jump up. She lacks training and is quite strong on the lead. She needs a home where she will be taught some manners and boundaries. This poor girl urgently needs a home as her owners are moving into a flat and working long hours. Anubus - Devon Anubus is a 4 year entire male. He does not live with children but is happy to play with ones he meets. He is good with other dogs and currently lives with his brother, but not cats. Anubus will need some recall training as he can easily get distracted. He loves to play with tennis balls and chewing on bones. He does not like to be left alone for long but is happy with another dog for companionship. Being rehomed through no fault of his own, due to a change in personal circumstances his owner cannot manage both dogs anymore. Harvey - Berks Harvey is 4 years and neutered. He is good with other dogs and cats but not keen on children so would not be rehomed with them. Harvey will bark at strangers and does jump up when excited. He loves company and his walks and has only learnt to play since being in foster. Harvey would be suited to a quiet home as he can get unsettled with too much traffic but he will make his new owners a great and loyal companion in return for lots of love and attention. Charlie - East Sussex "When charlie was taken into foster care he had scratched and chewed his back, tail and legs badly due to the fact his previous owners had neglected to treated his flea infestation for months, this had led to the skin becoming infected and very sore. This is Charlie before. Charlie's Ears were so infected it was the worst the vet had seem and the poor lad was in so much pain that he just barked at anyone who went near him BUT just look at him now - Charlie 10 weeks on and he is a new man. He is currently living with other dogs in foster and likes to play with cats. Toddy is a very strong dog on the lead and will show aggression towards other dogs when on the lead. He needs an experienced and strong handler to continue socialising him with other dogs and will benefit from a lot of training as he is a quick learner. A genuine gentle giant in the home though. Southern This handsome lad is nearly 4 and neutered. He is good with children of all ages but he would be best with older children only and he is good with other dogs. He will chase cats. Southern is anxious when meeting new people and will bark at them but if introduced correctly he is fine. He will need some more training as his recall is unreliable. This lovely lad is just not getting the time and stimulation a dog of his age needs and is starting to become overprotective in the home environment. Tyson - Bristol This gorgeous face belongs to 5 year entire Tyson. He was bought from an on-line ad at the beginning of the year and has been living with a family with younger children however we would only rehome him with older children as we do not know his full history. They have not socialised him with other dogs but he is happily living with a staffie bitch. Not good with cats. He is food possessive hence why he is being rehomed and will certainly need some training as he has missed out on this for a while. Tyson just needs an experienced home to give him the guidance he needs. Molly - Bristol Molly is a spayed 6 year bitch. Molly is not getting the attention she needs due to the arrival of a new baby however she wants to be close to the baby all the time. She is good with children of all ages but due to her over protective nature would be best away from young children. She is also good with cats but displays nervousness around some dogs but is submissive. Molly will lunge at people when out walking as she has become overly protective of mum and baby. When in kennels she was fine being handled which is a positive sign that she is just guarding her family. Can you help this gorgeous girl? Ziggy - Devon Ziggy is a 3 year entire male. This gorgeous boy is great with other dogs and lives with cats. Ziggy however does have an issue with teenagers so would need a child free zone. He has never bitten. In the right hands this boy would make a wonderful addition as he is a highly intelligent dog. He loves to be outside and is a friendly, gentle dog. He has been fine with horses, sheep, other dogs and cats. Dusty is only 6 and neutered. Ruby - Bristol Ruby is a 1year old GSD x Lab cross who will need an experienced owner as she is getting a bit aggressive and that will need correcting. She has lived with another dog who turned on her so her aggression now may be just for protection. She does have the bad habit of removing food from the work surfaces which again will need to be addressed. Despite all her bad points, being so young she can be retrained to become a lovely family pet. Mia - Devon Mia is a 6 year spayed bitch. She is a friendly girl but has spent her life living outside with free run of the land. This means she has not met children or any other dogs apart from the Jack Russell she lives with. No to cats. She will need lead training. Mia loves playing with her ball though. Mia would be much better suited to a rural environment with a large garden or land. Bella - Devon Bella is an 18 month unspayed young lady. Currently living with another older bitch but not socialised enough with dogs outside of the home. She is living with children happily but is nervous of visiting youngsters so would like a home with no children. Bella plays with cats but has had an incident with a sheep and a chicken. This lovely girl just needs an experienced home that can give her the socialisation with people and other dogs that he has missed out on and put her on the right track. Trooper - Devon This handsome young man is 6 year entire Trooper. He lives with children but can be nervous of them so would not rehome with young children. Trooper is fine with other dogs but not cats. On meeting strangers he can be wary but has never shown any aggression. On the lead he will pull at first but is fairly obedient. At present this poor lad is not getting enough exercise or stimulation and has a lot of pent up energy. Being rehomed through no fault of his own. Sheera - Devon Sheera, at 6 years, is a very gentle and affectionate girl with persons of all ages. She is not spayed and at the moment is in foster living with two other GSD crosses. After some initial pecking order disputes, she now plays and lives alongside them very happily. She travels very well in the car and is good on the lead. If she is let off the lead her recall is also good. In fact, she is good in every way except that she has a dislike of other dogs mainly little ones but this has been manageable because she is an obedient girl and not too strong to handle. She would need an owner to continue with her socialisation training when meeting other dogs. She has the usual "chase instinct" of cats. Her sweet and gentle nature in every other way is her overall redeeming characteristic. Blue - Bristol Blue is an 8 year old neutered male. Blue seems to have spent much of his life on his own and is quite aloof to people and other dogs. For this reason we would not rehome him with young children. He has never been off lead or allowed to play with other dogs. Very good on the lead but is overweight at present. Blue needs a home where he can learn to trust people and learn how to interact them. He can be slightly aloof but is a very confident dog. He will be very loyal to his handler but will become protective of them and his territory. Wendle is alert but quiet. He is fit and healthy. He is not keen on other dogs. This boy will need an experienced and understanding handler. Trevor - Bristol Trevor is a gorgeous black and tan 4 year old neutered boy. Poor Trevor has been from pillar to post. He was rehomed to his last family after his previous owners split up. He had lived with small children and was OK around livestock as they lived on a farm. Unfortunately the people who took him in, did not trust him off lead or around people so kept him muzzled and on the lead at all times. Trevor fed off their worried behaviour and started showing signs of nervous aggression. This poor boy has since been in kennels where he has been terrified of letting anyone near him, however thanks to a special volunteer, Trevor has learned to trust people again and does not show any aggression when outside of his kennel. Trevor is a big strong dog that would need a confident, experienced, and patient GSD owner to help him rebuild his confidence and re-socialise him with people and other dogs. This is the lovely Morgan aged 10 - how could you resist her? Morgan would be ok to live with children aged 12 and over, and would prefer not to live with cats. She can't be homed with other dogs. Page 1 Page 2 "He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion. We also accept Paypal payments - just click on the Paypal button below. The then-trainer at the Devon and Cornwall Police dog training school, PC Steve Bissett, started the initiative where suitable German Shepherd pups were purchased from reputable breeders of working dogs at seven weeks of age. These pups were placed with volunteer families called puppy walkers until they were 12 to 18 months of age. They were then allocated to their new police dog handler to commence training on a week general purpose police dog initial training course. The scheme still runs to this day but some of the dogs deemed not suitable are often removed and rehomed to the public. Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right. Follow CornwallLive. Once the litter has been weaned, the puppies will spend about a year with puppy walkers before formal police dog training begins. Paul Glennon, the force's canine development officer, said he "bedded down" with Molly on Monday night as she "appeared restless" and he was convinced the puppies were about to arrive. The first, or "alpha", litter born to a serving police dog in the force was born in June. The Frenchie dog breed is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. However, French Bulldogs can suffer from skin allergies because they are prone to many skin problems and allergies. Their skin folds can trap debris and moisture, and their hair can break due to rubbing. In this article, we will discuss why your French bulldog may be suffering from pimples and what are the skin issues that affect the Frenchie dog and how you can possibly minimize or eliminate them. Roger Wickenden Causes of pimples in French bulldogs There are many reasons why Frenchies can get acne and pimples. An environmental factor can be the cause of pimples; there are other factors such as poor hygiene, food deficiencies, cosmetic products, and bacterial infections. A hormonal imbalance can also be the cause of pimples. When French bulldogs are in a growing phase, like humans, they also suffer from pimples. It's easy to spot a pimples on the Frenchie dog's skin because it appears as whiteheads, red bumps, and blackheads. If you don't treat pimples in time, they can be very painful when touched. Prevention and Treatment of pimples in French Bulldogs If you see that your Frenchie has oily skin, he or she will likely suffer from dandruff and seborrhea. This problem occurs due to cosmetic products. Change your dog's cosmetic products and choose an appropriate shampoo because Frenchie dogs have sensitive skin and don't react well to any artificial ingredients in the shampoo. Select a shampoo that is rich in medicinal herbs because they are effective in treating blackheads in Frenchie. These medicated shampoos can prevent antibacterial infections and skin problems. To avoid pimples on French bulldogs, you should improve their hygiene. If your dog's skin is producing excess sebum, consult your vet about special treatment. At some point, the vet may recommend a special shampoo bath to relieve pimples. Your vet may also do an allergy blood panel test or recommend changing your dog's protein source to duck or even suggest feeding your Frenchie raw foods. There are many skin problems that a French bulldog can suffer from. Some of them are discussed below. Dermatitis in French Bulldogs It is defined as inflammation of the skin or dermis. Dermatitis is a common problem in French Bulldogs. There are many causes of dermatitis that include food allergies or environmental allergies. At the beginning of dermatitis, you will see irritated red skin that will later progress to scaling, scabbing, and even pustules. Dermatitis is commonly seen in French bulldogs on the tail folds and nasal folds. These are prime locations because they can easily trap debris and moisture and can get inflamed quickly. Occasionally, unpleasant odor and purulent discharge are also observed in these areas. Dermatitis can be avoided in these areas by keeping these folds dry and clean. Clean the folds of Frenchie's skin with wipes or damp cloths. The treatment of dermatitis can also be carried out with oral antibiotics prescribed by your vet and with antifungal and antibacterial shampoos. Some topical solutions are also used to prevent this problem. Skin problems in Frenchies due to fleas Fleas are very small and fast creatures, and you can see them jumping on your pet body. Fleas are generally black or dark brown in color and have a flat body and are less than an inch in size. When your Frenchie suffer from fleas, they will show certain symptoms like scratching; licking, chewing, and often seem restless. If you suspect fleas are on your pet's skin, you can check their fur for flea dirt. Flea dirt looks like any other dirt on the skin and is small black flakes made up of flea droppings containing their blood and feces. There are many flea treatments available on the market, and a vet can recommend the best treatment for your dog. Some available flea treatments are flea repellent sprays, flea collars, and oral medications. Courtney Campbell DVM cuts through the confusion about flea and tick medications. Hot spot in French bulldog Hot spots are commonly known as moist dermatitis, summer sores, or pyrotraumatic dermatitis. Hot spots in dogs are primarily caused by the licking and chewing behavior of your Frenchie. If French bulldog licks his or her skin aggressively, it will cause self-inflicted wound. When the skin is damaged, it will be a perfect environment for bacterial infection. Furthermore, if their skin gets a little wet when swimming, a recent bath, playtime in the water, or a walk in the rain can provide a perfect environment for bacterial infection. Hot spots may look scary and worse than they really are. The hot spot can be treated by trimming the hair at the infection site so that place gets enough air and any wounds dry quickly. You can also use antibacterial solutions to clean the area. If the infected area doesn't heal quickly, you can also use antibiotics for treatment. If your Frenchie is continually chewing on the infected area, you can use "cone" or "e-collar" to avoid excessive licking or chewing on the area. If you want to prevent hot spots on a more regular basis e-collar may not be sustainable as you can't leave your Frenchie with an e-collar all the time. In those cases we recommend organic hypoallergenic Frenchie pajamas for itchy pets or those with allergies. Wearing the doggie pajamas will limit access to their skin. When you wash your dog's pajamas, you also wash away the dander and allergens rather than allowing them to settle in the air or spread it around on floors and furniture. We recommend having a couple in case one is in the wash. Karen Becker discusses the causes of dog hot spots and how to treat and prevent it naturally. Skin problems in Frenchies caused by autoimmune diseases In autoimmune diseases, a Frenchie body will attack itself for many reasons. Autoimmune problems can start due to medications, genetic issues, and at some point, the cause is unknown. In this disease, numerous cutaneous lesions develop on the dog's skin. At some point, the dog's immune system will attack its own RBCs and lead to a life-threatening condition. This condition is often diagnosed by skin biopsy, and there is no adequate treatment for autoimmune diseases, only immunosuppressive drugs are used. At first, a rash will develop as a result of a fungal infection, and then it will cause hair loss in a circular pattern on your dog's body. The common signs that appear in the French bulldog that suffers from ringworm are scaling or scabbing lesions. It can also be contagious, so be careful when treating ringworm. It can be treated with anti-fungal medications if the lesions are present at one point. Your vet may also recommend medicated shampoos and oral medications. The Frenchie dog is a sensitive dog breed and can suffer from pimples and other skin conditions. If your Frenchie has any skin problems, you can try a more natural and holistic approach to treat your French Bulldog's skin, however, it is always important to consult with your vet. Shop Frenchiestore - a brand that is ethical, environmental friendly and committed to a movement in the pet industry towards social justice, health conscience and greater ecological integrity. This will help determine what your French Bulldog might be allergic to that you can eliminate. Chicken allergies is very common in Frenchies and it might be better to feed your Frenchie duck as the main protein. Also please ask your vet to do a skin scrape test so your vet can give you the right antibiotics. Hope this helps and this issue is resolved soon. Como puedo iniciar sesion? Learn more » When petting your French Bulldog , you may have noticed bumps on their skin. This can be alarming, but Frenchies are susceptible to skin issues, so feeling an occasional lump or bump may be nothing to worry about. In this article, we look at common reasons that French Bulldogs get skin bumps. Some can go away on their own, and others need medical treatment. Read on to learn more about French Bulldog skin issues and what you can do if you notice them. Fatty Tumors Fatty tumors are mostly harmless and tend to show up in older or overweight dogs. Also known as lipomas , these tumors vary in size and shape. They usually start to appear on middle-aged dogs. If they grow between muscles, they can cause pain when the dog walks. Image Credit: Hryshchyshen Serhii, Shutterstock 2. Sebaceous Cysts Sebaceous cysts develop from the sebaceous glands of the skin. They fill with sebum and feel like large pimples. They often occur in hair follicles that get clogged. These are common growths on dogs. They are smooth and can sometimes have hair growing out of them from the surrounding hair follicles. Vets can treat these cysts by simply expressing them or might treat them with antibiotics, topical treatments, and anti-inflammatories. Hives Hives are skin rashes that can result in swollen, red patches of skin. They appear suddenly, usually caused by insect bites or allergic reactions. In some cases, stress, heat, and sunlight can cause them. Treatment can include corticosteroids and topical creams. Vet Answer 4. Warts Any dog can get warts , but they are more common in younger animals. Warts look like a cauliflower head raised on the skin. Some warts are firm lumps with a dot in the middle. If the warts are inside the mouth, it can make eating or drinking painful. Dogs with warts are contagious to other dogs because warts are caused by an infection of papillomavirus. Most warts disappear on their own when the infection clears. Image Credit: Todorean-Gabriel, Shutterstock 5. These bumps are painful and infected. If they rupture, you may notice a foul-smelling material emerge. Any injury to the skin that gets infected can cause an abscess. Dogs usually have a fever with these bumps. If you notice an abscess on your dog, have it drained properly by your vet. Your dog will likely also be treated with antibiotics to get rid of any lingering infection. Once the abscess is drained, the dog will be much more comfortable. Your dog may be your first clue. Be sure to check the ears , lips, mouth, toes, and groin for bumps during your inspection. Just petting your dog regularly can lead to the discovery of a bump. You know what your dog feels like and will be able to tell if a bump is new. Image Credit: ivanovgood, Pixabay Conclusion French Bulldogs can commonly develop skin conditions during their lives. Know what skin bumps mean and what they could be, so you know what to do if you feel one on your dog. Usually, these bumps are harmless, but some can be serious. Always take your dog to the vet for any new bumps to be examined thoroughly. See also:. By Mac Daniels French Bulldogs have very sensitive and irritable skin that makes them prone to various skin conditions. This often results in the formation of bumps on their skin Most kinds of skin bumps formed are benign and can be easily treated at home, while others will require the attention of a vet as they can be the result of more dangerous diseases. So, why does your French Bulldog have bumps? Your French bulldog will have bumps on its skin as a result of various conditions which include fatty tumors like lipoma, sebaceous cysts, warts, hives and rashes, abscess, and mast cell tumors. You need to learn the signs of these conditions so you can detect them and provide the proper treatment for your dog. They typically go through three stages as they develop starting off as blackheads, moving to redness and swelling, then finally they become whiteheads. They are more common in older French Bulldogs, but younger French Bulldogs can still get them. They might appear spontaneously or as a result of a certain skin condition. Fatty Tumors Lipoma French Bulldogs might have bumps on their skin because of fatty tumors such as Lipomas which are a rapid production of fat cells. This is most common in older and overweight French Bulldogs. The bumps formed are soft and usually circular or oval-shaped. You might want to remove the bumps because they look ugly, but most vets recommend leaving them be unless they are causing discomfort to the dog or restricting its movement. So, when the sebaceous glands are blocked, the natural oil produced will have nowhere to go which results in the formation of a cyst. The cysts are usually smooth and circular in shape. When sebaceous cyst bursts, the oils inside it will come out along with a white cheese-like discharge or pus. To treat sebaceous cysts, you will need to burst and drain them completely. This cannot be easily done at home as the oil, pus, and discharge inside the cysts might make your dog vulnerable to infection. Warts Your French Bulldog might have some textured bumps on its skin that are commonly known as warts. They are also infectious as the virus can survive in the atmosphere for weeks. So, if your dog is infected, it might spread the virus in a certain area, then another dog will catch the virus from that area. How to Treat Warts in French Bulldogs? Warts do not usually require treatment. They will vanish on their own after a few months as your French Bulldog gains immunity from the virus infection. The main cause of hives and rashes is an allergic reaction which could be a result of exposure to a number of things including toxic plants, insect bites and stings, chemicals in some kinds of shampoos, and certain medications. Hives and rashes are sometimes caused by overheating or even stress. You will also notice some other symptoms in your dog such as severe itching in the areas where there are red bumps which leads to frequent scratching and biting, nausea and vomiting, general lack, and sometimes a fever. Once the cause of the hives and rashes is gone, then most of the bumps and symptoms will go away on their own. The veterinarian can also recommend a corticosteroid or an antihistamine to help manage and alleviate some of the symptoms. You can learn everything about the causes and treatments of hives in French Bulldogs here , and you can check out this complete guide to French Bulldogs rashes here. It appears in patches of painful swollen bumps that are either solid or soft to the touch. The size of the bumps can range from minor and harmless to large and serious. Other symptoms of an abscess include inflammation and redness in the areas where the bumps appear, severe itching which leads to frequent scratching and biting, hair loss, bad odor coming off of the skin, and bleeding. How to Treat Abscess in French Bulldogs? To treat abscesses in French Bulldogs, you need to take them to a veterinarian to open up the abscess and drain it or surgically remove it. The procedure will sometimes require anesthesia as well as antibiotics to help combat and avoid more infections. Mast Cell Tumor French Bulldogs might have bumps on their skin because of a mast cell tumor. This condition is highly aggressive and is usually a clear sign of skin cancer in dogs. Other symptoms of a mast cell tumor include enlarged lymph nodes, gastrointestinal problems, abnormal weight loss or weight gain, and a persistent cough. There are some measures you can take to protect your French Bulldog from severe skin conditions. The most important thing is to groom the dog properly by brushing its coat a few times a week and bathing it at least once a month. French Bulldogs do not need to take baths often as they have short hair and produce natural oils that protect their skin. However, the dog plays outside often, you will need to bathe them more often. The diet of your French Bulldog does affect its skin. Helpful Resources. Pin2 7 Shares French Bulldogs, like similar short-nosed or brachycephalic breeds, can be prone to a variety of skin problems. Their short hair can be prone to breaking or rubbing, and their folds trap moisture and debris, making them prone to infections and allergies. French Bulldog skin allergies, bumps, rashes and conditions are one the major issues you could face as an owner. Dermatitis Dermatitis literally means inflammation of the dermis, or skin. It is a common skin issue in many breeds, and French Bulldogs are no exception. The causes of dermatitis are often multi-factorial and can include allergies to food and things in the environment. Dermatitis often starts out as redness or an irritated area on the skin and can progress to scabbing, scaling, and even pustules. Treatment for dermatitis can be internal or external. Cleansing the skin with antibacterial or antifungal cleansers or shampoos and rinsing carefully with cool water can treat mild infections. More extensive cases of dermatitis may need oral antibiotics or antifungal medications, such as cephalexin or fluconazole. These medications are prescribed by a veterinarian, while some cleansing shampoos and wipes are available over-the-counter in your neighborhood pet store. Nasal fold and tail fold dermatitis A common location for dermatitis in French Bulldogs is in their nasal folds or tail folds. These locations trap moisture and debris, often getting inflamed very quickly. You may see redness in the area or purulent discharge, while the area may also have a foul smell. You can help prevent dermatitis in these areas by keeping the area clean and dry. If your pet gets an infection here, your veterinarian may need to prescribe medication, such as antibacterial and antifungal wipes, as they can have an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria in the area. In some cases, oral medications are also needed. Did You Know? The most common health problems in French Bulldogs according to a study were skin problems .See the results of the study in full. The latter identifies its cause as relating to self-inflicted trauma to the skin, generally from itching or rubbing. It can start off as a French Bulldog skin rash which you might not be overly concerned about. However, it can then develop further until your Frenchie has an area or multiple spots on its body where it has thick scaling with a sticky discharge that mats the hair. You can help treat a hot spot by carefully trimming the hair around the site, so it gets plenty of air, allowing it to dry out. You should also cleanse it with antibacterial solutions, such as chlorhexidine or betadine. French Bulldog dry skin from food allergies Food allergies are a common cause of dermatitis and other skin irritations and can result in a range of French Bulldog skin conditions. Treating food allergies involves getting rid of the component of the food that your Frenchie is allergic to; for example, it could be something as simple as chicken in their diet. French Bulldog skin allergies from environmental conditions Environmental allergies affect many dogs, and your Frenchie may be no exception. Sometimes they will have a contact allergy, where the part of the body that touches the allergen is affected where you might see a bump or rash. This can happen from something as simple as their lower belly touching grass or the lips touching a plastic bowl. French Bulldogs can also be quite bad for allergy sufferers. You can often treat environmental French Bulldog skin allergies by using an antihistamine, such as Benadryl or Zyrtec. There are also prescription strength antihistamines that might be recommended by your veterinarian, such as hydroxyzine. Your veterinarian will tell you how much of the medications to give. French Bulldog skin bumps due to fleas Fleas are a common pest affecting dogs and cats, and you may find your friendly Frenchie bringing them home. Fleas are identifiable as small, dark bodied insects that live on your pet. The first sign of fleas could be that you see one on your bed or furniture. Alternatively, a sure-fire sign will often be French Bulldog skin bumps or the sight of a small flea in their fur. You can treat fleas by using a reliable flea preventative. Cheap flea prevention products rarely work and may actually harm your dog. If your dog is very itchy, your vet may need to put them on anti-itch medications such as steroids, as well as antibiotics if they have a bad skin infection from the fleas. French Bulldog skin issues from Autoimmune diseases Some French Bulldogs are affected by autoimmune diseases, where their body attacks itself for a variety of reasons. Your dog can develop skin lesions, such as ulceration of its nose, or its body can even attack its red blood cells or platelets, leading to life-threatening anemia. Instead, your vet will need to diagnose the disease, often with a skin biopsy, followed by starting immunosuppressive medications. These may include prednisone or cyclosporine, and some pets need to be on a combination of medications to be effective treated. French Bulldog skin rash from ringworm Ringworm is another common ailment that may affect your French Bulldog. Some dogs will also just get scabbing or scaling lesions that identify it as ringworm. You must be careful with ringworm because some cases of ringworm are contagious to people. Ringworm is sometimes treated with topical antifungal medications, especially if the lesion or problem rash condition is located to one spot. If it is more widespread, your veterinarian will generally recommend topical therapy such as medicated shampoos, as well as oral medication. This medication usually needs to be fed with a meal, so make sure to follow the administration directions carefully. What other Frenchie owners say I am a member in various Frenchie Facebook groups, and they can be a great resource for tips and advice. I found a few questions on there that people has asked concerning skin infections and rashes, so have replicated those below with some of the best responses. His paws are so pink red. His stomach area smells all the time. Does it get any better? Vet recommended aggressive anti itch, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic to get under control, discontinue all topical items except sensitive baby wipes and baby shampoo. Also recommended is to not to bath too often as maybe that is contributing to issues as well? It helped clear her up, but she still itches sometimes so she is on a lower dose of medication. Is it possibly the shampoo you are using or other topical items or scents? We use it all the time with great success. The shampoo I use is mild tea tree. I wet a face flannel with it on gently sponge his underside whenever he goes out to parks when we get home. It went away. But I think he is allergic to different types grass. This only happened when he laid on his belly with legs out behind her in a certain type or grass in my back yard. I raked the whole yard of fall leaves. Finished her meds and he is now ok. You need antibiotics. And medicated shampoo. The skin condition was gone in two days. Ours is almost 2 and due to get blood tests in a couple of weeks when she gets spayed to detect any skin allergies. She has always had issues scratching under arms and stomach and takes Apoquel daily at the moment. Our girl has no more scratching and bald spots and is all clear great coat, good luck. We tried different medicated shampoos, iodine baths, food changes, eliminating grass completely, melatonin, getting MERV 15 or 16 air filters for the HVAC system and changing monthly we had 3 for one unit. None of these changed anything. The vet said she just had seasonal flank alopecia. We ran thyroid panels, allergy tests, blood tests… they gave us no direction. Then we tried changing her food… we went through a trial of dry foods, dehydrated raw, fresh raw, dehydrated cooked, freeze dried raw… ended up being home cooked food that cleared the skin problems up. My vet has her on antibiotics and Temp P. If you want to see what the side effects are, Google it. It works great however. She has been on and off of it for a few years. It is the only thing that has worked for her. She does not show any side effects and it is clear that she feels so much better. I did weigh the risks and the benefits with our vet. I am so happy that it is available. To help minimize your pet being affected, feed them a high-quality diet, and keep their skin folds clean and dry. You should also regularly clean out their ears, as French Bulldog skin allergies can quickly develop. You should also be wary of your dog getting water in their ears, as this can also lead to French Bulldog skin issues and ear infections. In addition to the other things suggested to help treat and control French Bulldog dry skin issues, you can put them on fish oils. Skin folds can: Harbor moisture Build up heat Cause chafing These factors are a perfect recipe for a type of inflammation called skin fold dermatitis. Symptoms of skin fold dermatitis typically include redness, moisture, and pain in and around the skin folds. The key to treating skin fold dermatitis includes: Reducing inflammation Clearing any current infection Keeping the skin clean and dry Your vet will prescribe medications to resolve any infection already present. If necessary, topical or oral steroids can help with itching and irritation. Long-term, one of the best ways you can manage and prevent future outbreaks of skin fold dermatitis is to keep your Frenchie at a healthy weight. Obesity can create even more excess tissue that worsens skin fold-related problems. Symptoms of pyoderma include red, raised pustules that resemble pimples in humans. You may also notice itching, flaky or crusty skin, and hair loss. Moisture on the skin and a musty odor around affected skin folds is also a common symptom. Treatment for Pyoderma Your vet will need to prescribe a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection. They may also recommend antihistamines, or steroids if a skin allergy is suspected. Dirty, damp bedding can harbor bacteria and cause skin irritation. Hot spots can develop quickly and without warning, especially in hot weather. Some signs you may be dealing with hot spots include: Irritation that starts as a small, red skin bump similar to an insect bite Rapid spreading that turns into red, painful, oozing sores Swelling and hair loss in the affected area Veterinary Treatment for Hot Spots A vet visit is a good idea for hot spots since the problem can get worse without proper care. If the skin has become infected, your pup needs prescription meds to clear it up. Your vet will examine your dog to look for signs of the underlying cause. A skin scrape may be needed to check for parasites. Your vet may prescribe treatments such as:4 Antibiotics to treat infection Steroids to ease itching and inflammation Allergy medication if an allergen is the root cause A pet-safe antiseptic to clean the irritated skin A cone to prevent scratching while the area heals, depending on the location of the hot spot Home Care for Hot Spots Hot spots begin when your dog scratches, licks, or chews excessively on an itchy patch of skin. The trauma caused by this opens the sensitive skin to inflammation and bacterial infection. The infection results in more itching, which leads to a cycle of irritation, itching, and scratching. If possible, you should try to discover and eliminate the original cause of the itching. Common culprits include: Food allergies Fleas and other insect bites Moisture trapped on the skin often in skin folds Stress and boredom.

This is a breeder family that started their Goldendoodle breeding program in .They are located in Henderson Kentucky and the facility is managed and owned by Shannon Knox. The Knox Family Goldens and Doodles facility is dedicated to producing F1 and multigenerational Goldendoodles that possess the teddy bear coat which is highly sought after amongst the breed. Their breeding program has been awarded the badge of Excellence due to their impressive line of sires and dams. Each puppy they produce is raised according to the high standards set by the Goldendoodle Association of North America. The sires and dams are thoroughly health tested through Embark Genetics for health conditions that could further affect the Goldendoodle litter being produced. They also have their much-needed certifications through OFA for having good working hips, elbows, eyes, and hearts. When it comes to how the puppies are raised, the Knox family opens up their large home to each puppy being produced. This is a small rural county in Henderson, Kentucky. There, the puppies are given great comfort in sleeping areas that are temperature regulated and spacious. In addition to that, they are given great quality pet food and supplements. They are also introduced to various puppy curriculums and protocols like Puppy culture, Early Neurological Stimulation, Bella and Baxter training tools, and a host of others. When you finally pick up your puppy, it would come with a 2 years health guarantee, day pet insurance, records of vaccinations and deworming, and GANA registration papers. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. The Newfypoo is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States and is a cross between a Newfoundland and a Poodle. As with many crosses with Poodles, the goal is the get all of the great traits of both breeds plus a low-shedding coat. This is not always guaranteed with a cross-breed because the puppies can take on any combination of traits from one or both parents. Regardless of their coat, a Newfypoo tends to have a friendly and loving disposition that makes a great family pet. Although the Newfypoo is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations like the International Designer Canine Registry, International Canine Association, and more. Although the Newfypoo grows up to be a big dog, they are notoriously gentle giants. They have a kind, loving, and friendly disposition with a playful, energetic personality. They are loyal and affectionate. Newfypoos also tend to be even-tempered and patient. They get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, and other pets. They also often take on the role of family protector and make good watchdogs. The Newfypoo is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their large size, they do not tend to be a good fit for apartment living. They are better suited to larger homes and will love running around a yard. Because these big dogs tend to be fluffy, they tend to do better in moderate and cooler climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond closely with their families. Since the Newfypoo is a mixed-breed, they can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. For this designer dog breed, potential health issues to be aware of include patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, bone problems, a heart condition called subvalvular aortic stenosis, and eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy and cherry eye. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing potential issues on to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Both of the parent breeds of the Newfypoo are highly intelligent, eager to please, and highly trainable. The same should be true for the Newfypoo. They tend to pick up on things quickly and tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods focused on reward and praise. Because a mixed-breed can take on any combination of characteristics from the parents, your Newfypoo could end up with a Newfoundland coat, a Poodle coat, or some combination of both of them. As such, you need to be prepared for coat care regardless of coat type. Should your Newfypoo have a Newfoundland coat, they will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year. Brushing weekly or a few times a week is usually sufficient, but it may be a good idea to move to daily brushing during heavier shedding sessions. Bathing is on an as-needed basis. Should your Newfypoo inherit the Poodle coat, they will be low-shedding, but not low-maintenance. Professional grooming needs to happen every weeks. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. Keeping it a positive experience and getting them used to it early on makes basic grooming and maintenance much easier as your puppy grows into a large dog. The Newfypoo has a moderate activity level. They do need daily vigorous activity to stay happy and healthy, but they take time to relax as well. Daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity are usually sufficient for this dog. Their large frame and joints do not make them a good fit for long-distance running, but your Newfypoo may enjoy running around with you briefly, going on hikes, taking trips to the dog park, and more. A fully-grown Newfypoo usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Newfypoo generally lives years. Although Newfypoo is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes called a Newdle, Newfydoodle, Newfoundlandoodle, Newfoundlandpoo, Poofoundland, or simply a Newfoundland Poodle Mix. People love the hypoallergenic coats of Saint Berdoodles, which are usually low-shedding or non-shedding. Saint Berdoodles have wonderful temperaments and are usually great with kids. Saint Berdoodles have hybrid vigor, which results from crossing two purebred dogs. Hybrid vigor typically results in a healthier offspring, and Saint Berdoodles have a much longer life expectancy than a purebred Saint Bernard. Purebred St Bernards usually live years; whereas Saint Berdoodles are usually expected to live years. Anyone who has owned and loved a Saint Bernard might wonder why anyone would get a Saint Berdoodle instead. There's a seven-fold answer for why Saint Berdoodles win the battle for many families. St Bernard vs St Berdoodle Hypoallergenic: St Berdoodles usually have low-to-non shedding coats like poodles and are typically far better for people with allergies than a purebred Saint Bernard, which sheds its coat. Health: Hybrid vigor typically improves a dog's health. There's a reason that humans don't marry our relatives. Saint Berdoodles tend to have fewer health issues than a pure Saint Bernard. Intelligence: Poodles consistently rank as one of the top if not THE top breeds for intelligence. Saint Berdoodles are very quick learners. Trainability: Usually the St Berdoodle's increased intelligence makes them an easy dog to train. Saint Berdoodles love pleasing their owner. Walking Partner: Although Saint Berdoodles are one of the lowest energy doodles, they tend to be more active than a somewhat lethargic purebred Saint Bernard who usually prefers to lounge all day. Although a Saint Berdoodle will not be an active runner like a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Aussiedoodle, or Springerdoodle, you can usually take a Saint Berdoodle for a long walk--more so than a purebred Saint Bernard. Nathan Crockett was one of the first breeders to raise top quality Saint Berdoodles. We have people from all over the U. Saint Berdoodle Pricing. Saint Berdoodle Highlights Saint Berdoodles are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Saint Bernard or Poodle parents. Two common color combinations of Saint Berdoodles are white-and-brown and white-and-black. They can also be red with white accents or white with red accents. The coats of Saint Berdoodles can take after either parent—wiry and curly for the Poodle, or longer and smooth or rough for the Saint Bernard. Saint Berdoodles are generally pretty well-equipped for cold weather, especially if their coats are similar to Saint Bernards. Saint Berdoodles are great with people of all ages, including kids. The only concern with these dogs is their size with very young children. Be sure to supervise interactions with very young children in case of accidental stepping or sitting. These dogs do not enjoy being alone, so they would love the company of other pets and family members. Saint Berdoodle History Historical records show Poodles being bred in the s and Saint Bernards being bred in the s, both in Europe. Saint Berdoodle breeding is a little more vague, but it looks like they were bred intentionally in the US beginning in the s. The rationale to combine the protectiveness and rescue nature of the Saint Bernard with the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle for a family dog was strong. Between and alone, Saint Bernards rescued over 2, people. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Saint Berdoodle rescues, or check with breed-specific Saint Bernard or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Saint Berdoodle Size Though there is quite a range of sizes for Saint Berdoodles, you can expect a larger dog, in general. Saint Bernards are always large, and Standard Poodles are medium-to-large. In terms of height, the range is typically between 15 and 30 inches. There have been attempts at creating a Miniature Saint Berdoodle, with a weight between 20 and 50 pounds, and a height between 14 and 18 inches, but miniaturizing a Saint Bernard usually involves breeding with a smaller dog, too—most commonly the Cocker Spaniel. You can expect your Saint Berdoodle to be friendly and affectionate, always wanting to be part of family activities. The only reason you may need to supervise interactions with Saint Berdoodles and very small children is just that these dogs are often quite large, so accidents may happen with sitting or stepping. Saint Berdoodle Health Saint Berdoodles are fairly healthy dogs. While mixing breeds can be a way to minimize genetic disorders, the resulting crossbreed can still inherit health problems from the parent breeds. Regular care and annual veterinary check-ups are a good way to keep your dog in prime health. Some of the more common health problems for Saint Berdoodles include: hip dysplasia. Life Span Did You Know? Although a mixed-breed dog can take on any combination of traits from one or both of their parent breeds, well-socialized Saint Berdoodles tend to be affectionate and loving dogs with sweet natures and social personalities. This designer dog breed may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other notable dog organizations. The Saint Berdoodle is a gentle giant that makes a great addition to any family. Well-socialized, they tend to be social and friendly with charming, cheerful personalities. They also tend to be affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent dogs. These dogs can be good watchdogs as they are initially wary of strangers and will alert you when someone is on the property. Although Saint Berdoodles do tend to have a protective instinct over their family and territory, they tend to be quite social and friendly and do not tend to be aggressive provided they have been properly socialized and trained. Saint Berdoodles are moderately adaptable dogs. Due to their sheer size, they are better suited to larger homes with yards where they can run and roam freely. They could potentially adapt to apartment living if they are given enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, but their size will definitely be a challenge in smaller spaces. This dog adapts well to most moderate climates. As a large, fluffy dog, they are also sensitive to heat and can easily overheat. Because a Saint Berdoodle craves attention, bonds closely with their family, and loves being with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A crossbred dog can inherit the potential health concerns common to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Saint Berdoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure that they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large dog, the Saint Berdoodle is also at a higher risk of bloat just like both parent breeds. Bloat in dogs can become dangerous quickly and is fatal if the stomach flips. Although the Saint Berdoodle will grow to be a giant dog, they tend to be gentle and highly trainable. Their high intelligence and eagerness to please means they pick up on things quickly and are relatively easy to train. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods that are calm and consistent and focused on reward and praise. Puppy training classes are always an option and can be a good opportunity to socialize a puppy, which is even more important in a dog this size. The maintenance your Saint Berdoodle requires will depend completely on the coat they inherit. But, they will require daily brushing and professional grooming every weeks. Once or twice monthly nail trimming is usually enough to keep them from growing too long and causing issues. You can also support your efforts to prevent dental diseases later in life with dental hygiene chews and treats approved by your vet. Saint Berdoodles tend to have a moderate energy level. They will be energetic while playing and require some exercise, but they will be happy to be a couch potato every now and then. Daily walks plus some time to play are usually enough for this big dog. They may not be a good fit for a running partner, but your Saint Berdoodle may enjoy going on hikes with you, taking trips to the dog park, or even going swimming. Just make sure you keep activities low impact until their bones and joints finish growing and developing. A fully-grown Saint Berdoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. They are one of the largest dog breeds. Saint Berdoodles generally live for years on average. This designer dog breed is most commonly known as a Saint Berdoodle, but they are also sometimes called a Saint Berpoo. Featured Saint Berdoodle Article.

This is especially true with dogs like German Shepherds because they have a strong prey drive, but this nipping and biting can also quickly get out of hand. This often comes out as biting and nipping, but puppies will also bite when they are teething and to taste the world around them. This can, of course, quickly get out of hand if not taken care of swiftly. In this article, we look at the reasons behind German Shepherd puppies biting and seven steps to help stop the behavior. Training The first and most important step in stopping your puppy from biting is early and focused training. Beginning training at an early age is vital for powerful dogs like GSDs, as without it, they can easily develop problematic behaviors and even become aggressive. An important part of training is socialization, and getting your GSD to interact with other dogs will help teach them boundaries, as any biting too hard will have instant consequences for them. Image Credit: AnjaGh, Pixabay 2. Toys Toys are ideal for your GSD puppy to exercise their teething. There is a massive variety of suitable chew toys available, and whenever you notice your pooch getting the urge to chew, you can gently offer them a chew toy instead. Commands Basic and simple commands should be taught to your GSD from a young age. Whenever they get overexcited and bite down too hard, you can then simply issue a verbal command that catches their attention. After you issue the commands, leave your puppy alone for a few minutes so they learn that this behavior is unacceptable. Image Credit: Jim Sluder, Pixabay 4. Redirection Redirection is a useful tool in training and can work well with biting too. This method is simple and works by keeping your pup from unwanted behavior and offering them appropriate behavior instead. Whenever your pooch bites or nips, try to offer them a chew toy of some kind instead, and this will gradually lead them to chew toys as opposed to your hands. Squeak toys are great for this type of redirection, as the noise is enticing to most puppies and dogs. Reward good behavior Positive reinforcement training methods are best for leading your puppy toward desired behaviors and away from unwanted ones. These methods involve no scolding or harsh treatment, so they are ideal for cementing the bond between you and your pup. When you offer your dog a chew toy instead of biting and they take it or you issue a command that they instantly follow, you simply reward that behavior with either a treat or praise. You ignore any bad behavior. They will swiftly associate treats with good behavior and stop the bad behavior that gets them no attention. Image Credit: Happy monkey, Shutterstock 6. Games Since GSDs are such powerful and athletic animals, they need to be mentally and physically stimulated through games and interactive play. Games are also the best time to engage and enforce training techniques and get your GSD accustomed to them before biting gets out of hand. Stick to simple games like fetch or frisbee, where you can train your pooch to give the ball back when you tell them to. Harsh treatments like hitting or shouting are highly unlikely to solve the problem and will probably just make it worse, as your dog will simply become nervous and wary of you. With a powerful dog like German Shepherds, trust is vital. They are highly intelligent and aware animals, and the smallest of sounds or movements are enough to set them off. There are several reasons for this, including: GSD puppies will begin teething as early as 2 weeks old, and this can be uncomfortable and even painful for them. This behavior can go on until your puppy is 6 months old, and they will chew on almost anything that they can find — including your hand — in an attempt to try and soothe their discomfort. Separated too young. The first 2 months of your GSDs life is vital to their socialization and learning, and if they are taken away from their mother and litter too young, this may cause a lack of understanding of boundaries. Puppies will play and learn with the rest of their littermates, where they learn to control the force of their bite. GSDs should be at least 8 weeks old before they are re-homed. Fear or overstimulation. Fear, anxiety, and overstimulation are common reasons for puppies to lose control of their bite because this can cause them to become irritable or defensive and lead them into the habit of biting. Conclusion Since German Shepherds are such powerful dogs, proper training is vital, and bite inhibition is an essential part of that training. Proper training is the vital first step and will set the tone for all other methods. With time, consistency, patience, and gentle leadership, your German Shepherd puppy should kick the biting habit in no time. German Shepherd puppies , like all puppies, go through a teething phase, and their biting behavior can continue until they are around 4 to 6 months old when their adult teeth have fully grown in. But how do you get German Shepherd puppies to stop biting, and when should you seek out more help? We dive into everything that you need to know here. German Shepherds are herding dogs, and as such, they love to go after anything that moves. This could be cats, kids, hands, fingers, or just about anything else. The more they get away with it, the more acceptable the behavior seems in the future. Addressing the problem early and consistently is vital. Just like babies need something to chew on when their new teeth are coming in, your German Shepherd needs something too! First, it stops when they get their adult teeth. Second, if you try to redirect them to something that they can chew on, most German Shepherd puppies are receptive. At this time, they should have all their adult teeth, which means no more teething to worry about. But at least you know the root of the problem and can start implementing the necessary strategies to address it. Instead, get them a few chew toys, bones, and other acceptable things to chew on as they teethe. You can also throw a few of these toys in the fridge or freezer to cool them down, and this will offer even more relief for your pup when they need it! While there are plenty of techniques to try, we recommend redirection and positive reinforcement. The method is simple. If and when they start chewing on the toy or other appropriate object, give them praise. German Shepherds love to please their owners, so this is typically an effective way to train your puppy. Therefore, you should have levels of concern. If they are still chewing and nipping at the 9-month mark, you should seek obedience training or talk to a vet to see what you can do. So, get on it early and often, and stick with it! Because with just a little work and dedication you can get your German Shepherd puppy to stop biting in no time. Check Price on Amazon 4. Use Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement means giving something pleasant to your German Shepherd when they perform what you want them to do so that they learn to associate the correct behavior with the reward. The more this is repeated, they will remember and do it more often. The reward is a reinforcing motivation. In the above example of redirecting your GSDs biting to a chew toy, once he accepts the toy and starts to chew or play with it, you then offer lots of enthusiastic verbal praise and reward with a treat. Again, timing is important, and this must be done instantly so that your German Shepherd will recognize or associate his behavior with the correct action. You can give other rewards, but these may be more suited to older pups, adolescent dogs, or adults. Alternatives could be giving them a special toy, playing their favorite game, such as fetch, or taking them on their favorite walk. Always use lots of verbal praise in parallel to the reward you choose. You will, no doubt, soon get to learn where your dog prefers to be pet. Go here for more guidance on where to pet your German Shepherd. This is also useful when your German Shepherd starts to put his mouth around your possessions or furniture, ready to have a good gnaw! Using a time-out can effectively discipline a German Shepherd for biting and other undesirable behaviors. A great way to do this is to grab their collar, push their bum down, and make them sit. The idea is that your German Shepherd will quickly learn to associate that the fun stops when his nipping starts! As always, timing is critical, so your pup learns what he has done wrong at the precise moment. For very young puppies, you should only put them in time-out for a few seconds, between 7 and 10, and no longer than 30 seconds. At the end of the time-out, redirect your pup back to play and use lots of verbal praise or offer a training treat for good onward behavior. You must time the click at the exact moment your pet is doing what you want to reinforce. If you quickly reward your dog with a positive experience such as a treat, he will soon learn to associate the noise of the click with great things. The idea is that you condition your German Shepherd so that when he hears the sound of the clicker, he knows he has done something to please you. In the case of puppy biting, we are simply rewarding the puppy for choosing not to bite. You can achieve this by using the distraction technique described above. When the puppy makes the right choice and starts to bite on his chew toy, he hears the click and gets his treat. Look out for other symptoms such as drooling more than usual, bad breath, loss of appetite, or sneezing. If you are consistent and patient with your methods, you will achieve great results. Be firm but fair, which also helps to strengthen the loving bond between you and your dog. It leads to fear, avoidance, hurt feelings, guilt, stress, anxiety, and lack of trust. Owners should use positive reinforcement methods as much as possible. In another year-long study by the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that using confrontational or aversive methods to teach aggressive dogs did not work. The dogs continued to be aggressive until the training methods were changed. The same study found that punishing techniques and dominance-based training, such as hitting or kicking, growling, or yelling at your dog, can cause aggression, as stated by Meghan E. An even more recent study in companion dogs suggests that using even mild punishments like yelling and leash-jerking can stress dogs out more than dogs taught using reward-based training. This stress causes negative consequences and poorer welfare. Alpha rolling is a controversial and outdated technique that physically puts your dog on his back or side in a submissive position to show that you are dominant or the Alpha. This old-fashioned technique is a form of positive punishment and was often used to house-train pups. Many people will have used this method decades ago without success, but at the time, they believed it was the right thing to do. For a positive punishment to work, the problem is that it has to be administered during or immediately after the act within 2 -3 seconds ; otherwise, the dog will not make the connection. Sometimes puppies naturally get over-excited and overtired. When this happens, instead of using the crate as a punishment, lure him into the crate with a treat offering lots of praise and letting him go down for a nap. If you feel sorry for your German Shepherd after disciplining him, you must never reward him out of guilt. Again, this only confuses your dog. Remember to be firm but fair. While a muzzle can prevent your dog from biting, it is not a solution to the underlying behavior issue. Muzzling your German Shepherd without addressing the root cause of their biting can lead to further behavioral problems and may even make the situation worse. Is it ever too late to discipline a German Shepherd for biting? It is never too late to discipline a German Shepherd for biting, but it may take more time and effort to modify their behavior if the biting has become a habit. Start with identifying the root cause and then take the guidance of an expert to set boundaries and train better to eradicate unwanted behavior. Final Thoughts Puppy biting is natural in all dogs. However, you now know the importance of disciplining your German Shepherd as soon as he starts to exhibit biting, nipping, and chewing behavior and how to do it. This is especially important with the German Shepherd breed as they quickly grow into big strong dogs. That could end in disaster for all concerned. No matter what you are teaching your German Shepherd, try to train him when young; 8 weeks old is a great time to start. Make sure you properly socialize him and give him lots of exercise and training will be much easier. Related Posts You May Like:. Puppies Have you ever reached down to play with a German Shepherd puppy, only to have that adorable little fur-ball pierce your skin with its razor-sharp puppy teeth? When I brought Allie into the family, she was fully in the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — so that first month was tough! Unfortunately, biting is an inevitable phase of puppyhood — it comes with the territory when you decide to be a puppy parent. My goal with this guide is to get you through the biting stage with as few battle scars as possible. Why do German Shepherd Puppies Bite? Up until this time, your puppy was with its littermates, and playtime meant lots of mouthy, nipping fun. Accordingly, this is the only way your GSD knows how to play! A German Shepherd puppy also uses their mouths to explore different things like toys — or hands, ankles, furniture… pretty much anything they can get their mouth around. Your puppy could also be teething, which can increase their mouthy behavior. Just be patient as you work through the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — give your pup time to learn to be gentle when playing or seeking your attention. Nothing is worse than an ankle-biter! I was very lucky not to have this problem with Allie. Why does your German Shepherd puppy target the ankles? Because your GSD is a working dog trying to do its job — herd you around the house like livestock. German Shepherds were originally bred for herding flocks of sheep. Your furry pal may also think heel nipping is just a really fun game. Using a toy as a distraction and keeping your pup active will help nip ankle nipping in the bud! Because she was too busy biting hands! There are lots of reasons why a pup may decide to start biting your hands. For one, good things treats, toys, love, attention come from hands. Also, hands are almost like swinging toys from the perspective of a playful pup — too enticing to pass up! How to Discourage Biting Behavior While the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is a rite of passage, there are some ways you can discourage bad biting behavior without harsh discipline. This is one of the most effective ways to teach your German Shepherd bite inhibition — or how to be gentle with her teeth. Think about when your pup was rolling and playing with their brothers and sisters — if your GSD was too rough, their sibling would let out a yelp. This trick worked great with Allie! Just make sure to be consistent until your pup gets the idea and learns to master the power of her jaws. Puppies will be puppies! Redirect the biting to an appropriate toy. For example, when your fuzzy friend latches onto your ankles, give a little puppy-like yelp, and then whip out a toy and encourage your dog to chew on that instead. Tug-of-war is the perfect game for the puppy biting phase. Socialize your puppy as much as possible. Other dogs are great at teaching your puppy that they playing too rough and biting too hard. Try a deterrent to prevent your dog from chewing or biting. If all else fails, there are lots of products designed to deter your dog from bad biting behavior. How do they work? Well, they taste awful. But if used correctly, they can definitely work. This is still attention — your puppy bites, your puppy gets attention. Otherwise, your pup may see this as a fun new game, kind of like tug-of-war but with your hands or feet as the toy. You want your furball to love playing with you! The goal here is to encourage your German Shepherd to play as much as ever but to play gently. As a pup, Allie thought she should greet everyone by jumping in their face and nipping — kind of like a kiss hello, but with teeth. And as she got bigger, it was harder to control. But trust me, it got old quickly. Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone. Redirect attention to a toy like I talked about earlier. Fold your arms and turn away. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward. What to Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression. Look for physical differences in your pup. If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play. Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of. While the biting phase will inevitably end, you may find yourself asking the infamous question — when do German Shepherds calm down!? I asked myself and our vet this question more than once! It honestly just depends. Sure, she had her calm moments thanks in part to her training , but she was still very hyper especially in more excitable moments. The type of German Shepherd dog is yet another variable that plays a role in its energy levels. So when do German Shepherds calm down? It really depends on your individual German Shepherd. Final Thoughts Unfortunately, the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is something all GSD puppy owners will go through, but it will pass. Try the tips above to help keep your sanity during this phase. Or any tips to help the rest of us? Please share! Hopefully, we will have the answers to all of your questions in this guide. But, all that cuteness quickly disappears when the biting phase starts. Puppy biting is normal in all breeds, including the German Shepherd. And, luckily, we have some great tips and tricks to minimize the painful biting period. In fact, it could have a number of causes. Here are a few of the most common reasons, in a little more detail. Teething One reason why puppies of all breeds may bite is teething. This stage often starts at around 3 or 4 months of age — only a few weeks after your puppy will arrive at their new home. Luckily, it only takes a few months for your puppy to have their full set of adult teeth. So, biting from teething is not permanent. If your puppy is biting or chewing because of teething, you may notice other symptoms like drooling, irritability, and going off their food. Boredom or Getting Attention Bored puppies may learn that biting gets some fun responses from you! Just like barking can. If your puppy has learnt that they can get some attention from you when they bite, they may do it to alleviate boredom. This can explain why puppies concentrate most of their biting on one family member — the person who gives the most fun response. Natural Play Biting is a natural part of puppy play — as much as some owners might not want to hear it! German Shepherd puppies, just like any other breed, will bite whilst they are playing with you or with other dogs. If this behavior continues into adulthood, the biting can be more problematic. Responding to Rough Play Some people like to play with German Shepherd puppies in quite a rough manner. This can include pushing them, or rolling them over. Behaviors like this can make puppies very excitable, and encourage biting during play. Encourage calm play between your family members or friends and your puppy. Herding Instincts The German Shepherd breed has a history as a herding dog. The creator of the breed, Captain Max von Stephanitz, bred the German Shepherd in an attempt to create the ultimate all-round herding breed. This was all the way back in the late s. Although the history of the breed has changed over time, from herding to working dog, their origins remain the same. Many herding dogs are prone to natural chase instincts. They may chase small children or other animals — particularly those that are making lots of noise. And, these herding behaviors can include nipping at heels. Once again, your behavior can minimize biting from this cause. Exploration Another common explanation for young German Shepherd biting is their natural curiosity. And, they may do this partly with their mouths. What you really want to know is, when will it stop? However, you can minimize the period by making a few easy changes to your behavior when biting occurs. The best ways to stop puppy biting and minimize the biting period are training and prevention. This means training your puppy to be gentle with you and other people, and taking away opportunities for your excited puppy to bite humans. You may need to go as far as to completely separate your GSD puppy from small children and people who insist on rough play with puppies. We know that this can only encourage biting. Remove Yourself Calmly If your puppy starts to bite you, during play or any other time, the best solution is to calmly and quietly remove yourself. You can use tools like baby gates to keep your German Shepherd in a puppy-safe room. In fact — your puppy will learn that biting during play or cuddles only results in you leaving, and them ending up on their own! Not only will this help to show your puppy that biting is not an acceptable part of playtime, but it can also help your own sanity to remove yourself from those sharp teeth occasionally. Think About Clothing You should also think about the type of clothing you wear around your puppy. Loose, hanging clothing can be appealing to your puppy, and provide something easy to grip on with their sharp teeth. Wear tight fitting clothing to minimize the number of things your puppy can bite at. Use Distractions If you, or young children in your household, are keen to pet your puppy without being bitten, you should make the most of distractions like treats or toys. You can hold a chew for your puppy to keep their attention and mouth distracted whilst someone pets them! Often, puppy owners only think about biting whilst their puppy is actively gnawing on them. One method is to reward them with treats when you are petting them and they are not biting you. Another is to reward them for calm behavior around the house. This way they learn that acting calmly and letting you touch them without biting will earn them good things! One popular method to stop puppy biting is to squeal, squeak, growl, or make another loud noise. Some people claim that this method replicates natural puppy play and tells your GSD when they are being too rough. For some owners, this may work. If this is the case, making a noise when your puppy bites will act as a reward, and encourage your German Shepherd puppy to bite you even more. This is one reason why puppies biting children is so common. Many children will make lots of noise, especially if a puppy bites them, which can lead to further nipping. This is similar to the method above, if used alone. This is why training has to be done in small stages — first you must teach the puppy what action you want, and then you can give the action a name, or command. Punishment Methods The best methods to stop your puppy from biting involve positive rewards for the behaviors you want. Studies on dog training and behavior have shown that punishment based methods are often associated with an increase of problematic behaviors. Punishing your puppy for biting can lead to distrust and fear from your puppy. The causes of puppy biting that we looked at earlier in this guide apply to all GSD puppies. In fact, they apply to all puppies of any breed. Biting and chewing is a normal puppy behavior, and a normal part of play. As long as you react to this behavior in the right way, it is a period that will pass. The biggest fear for most German Shepherd puppy owners is that their puppy is aggressive when it bites. German Shepherd puppy biting can be accompanied by ferocious growls or snarls. It can even draw blood. So are behaviors like snarling and growling. And, if your puppy is biting hard enough to injure you, they may not have learnt proper bite inhibition yet. This is the process where your puppy learns to be gentle with his teeth on your skin. The positive reward methods we discussed earlier in this guide are the best way to teach your puppy bite inhibition. Remove yourself calmly and quietly whenever your puppy bites. And make sure to reward any calm behavior — including when your puppy lets you pet it without biting. Speak to a Behaviorist If you think your puppy is exhibiting aggressive behaviors, such as guarding their resources, you may want to speak to a behaviorist. They will be able to look at your puppy as an individual case, and analyse their behavior properly. Do Adult German Shepherds Bite? The German Shepherd breed is known for being aggressive in some circumstances — they make popular guard dogs, and are number one candidates for working dog roles in the police and military. Since puppies lack the dexterity that you and I have, they use their mouths to explore the world around them. By understanding the behavior of biting itself, you can begin to see just how normal biting is in German Shepherd puppies. Just because biting is a normal behavior in a puppy does not mean we should tolerate it or promote it. Since biting is a form of communication for German Shepherd puppies, there are many things our puppies could be trying to say! So why do Shepherd pups bite? Puppies often communicate with their siblings through biting and pawing, especially when they are trying to incite a play session. Your pup may gnaw on your hand as if it were a chew toy, especially when you are a moving target. Puppies play and bite their siblings from the moment they are old enough to do so. This is why the behavior is so common, and why our Shepherd pupswill need to learn how to transition to playing with appropriate chewing options. Not only are our hands and feet tempting enough, but even more so when a puppy has a high prey drive. A prey drive is an ingrained need to chase after moving objects, whether it is appropriate or not. A swinging hand as we walk by can be extremely tempting for a growing pup, causing them to jump up and nip. If it seems like your Shepherd puppy is always biting you when you are in motion, it may be due to their high prey drive! They Are Curious As we mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies use their mouth to explore the world around them. Biting can help them examine and understand an object, and our hands and feet can fall into that category as well! If you catch your puppy gnawing on everything around your home, it may be their curiosity getting the best of them! A dog quickly learns what behavior gets a reaction, causing them to do it over and over again. Even if their bites result in a negative reaction from you, it still counts as attention. They Are Teething Similar to teething babies, a German Shepherd puppy experiences teething pain as well. If your Shepherd pup seems to find relief when chewing on objects, they may be biting you due to teething discomfort. They Are Herding You If your German Shepherd puppy is constantly biting at your ankles, they may be displaying some herding behaviors. German Shepherds are ingrained with a need to work, especially in dogs with a working bloodline. If your German Shepherd is always nipping at your feet, running to your side when you are moving, or showing signs of anxiety or frustration when you are moving around your home; it may be herding behavior. So how can you stop this normal puppy behavior? Redirect The Behavior One of the most effective ways to stop your German Shepherd puppy from biting is by redirecting the behavior. An effective distraction is a wonderful way to end the behavior without punishment, and show them how much fun the alternative to biting can be. The next time your Shepherd pup is displaying undesirable nipping, try to pull out their favorite toy. Since this will need to be a toy that your dog enjoys, be sure to offer them the option that they find most exciting. This can be a Kong toy , rope, bone, or any other chewing option that your dog loves. By doing this each time your Shepherd puppy begins to bite you, they will begin to understand that they would much rather play with an acceptable chew option. Having a variety of chew toys can alleviate their need to bite our hands and feet, and offer them the relief they seek in this uncomfortable transition. There are so many toys created for teething puppies, that it should be easy to fill your home with plenty of appropriate options. One of our favorite chew toys is the Kong Teething Binkie. Any attention can validate the behavior, causing them to make it a habit. This shows them that the behavior is unacceptable, and does not involve any harmful negative reinforcement. Our attention is important to a puppy, and they do not want to be ignored. By showing them that biting will only result in us pulling away, they will learn to ditch the undesirable behavior. Interrupt The Behavior Sometimes a Shepherd puppy needs a sharp and sudden sound to pull them out of a bad habit. By giving a quick interrupter cue ouch, yip, eek , you can pull your puppy away from the action and gain their attention. Because of this, it is so important to offer plenty of mental and physical activities throughout your home. For example, if your puppy nips at strangers each time they walk in the door, it may be best to limit their time around the guest and send them to a separate play area. Once they begin to understand that biting is unacceptable, you can refrain from using their separate play area as often. Similar to what we discussed above about being proactive, a separate play area can help them calm down and collect themselves. Once your German Shepherd puppy begins to mature and understand that biting is unacceptable, they should require less time away. Just as there are effective methods in canine training, there are counterproductive actions as well. Do Not Hit Or Yell Since biting is a normal behavior that puppies must learn to grow out of, it is not productive to hit or yell at your puppy when they bite. Doing this can show them from a young age that interaction with you results in something negative, and can hinder your training process. By using other distractions and training methods when they bite, you can turn every bite into a learning experience for your pup! This can seem like a fun game to your pup, and can actually encourage the behavior. Try your best to go limp when they bite you, and pull your attention away from the pup. By doing this, you show them that this behavior does not offer them any extra fun. Extra attention can validate their undesirable behavior, making it challenging to break. Try your best to refrain from reacting to a bite outside of your interrupter cue, and pull your attention away from your furry friend afterward. Biting is a normal behavior in puppies of all kinds. Puppies begin to bite their siblings from the moment they can move, and will continue this behavior until they learn otherwise. A biting German Shepherd puppy is to be expected, and should not result in any discouragement on your part. As long as you are following the tips we mentioned above, your puppy should shy away from this behavior in no time! Biting in puppies is not usually a sign of aggression. Mild biting is usually a form of play, and should be easily corrected. However, there are some rare cases where biting in German Shepherd puppies is a sign of something more. If your pup is displaying any snarling, growling, ears pinned back, stiff posture, or any other signs of canine aggression, your pup may be biting in reaction to fear or pain. If you are unable to make any progress within a month of implementing the tips we discussed above, it may be time to contact a dog trainer. A trainer can not only help your pup refrain from biting, but offer other obedience training as well. Final Thoughts As you can see, biting is a normal behavior for our beloved German Shepherd puppies. Be sure to review the tips we discussed above on proper canine training, and you can banish puppy biting for good! An aggressive pound dog pouncing on you can get quite ugly fast. Think broken bones, damaged muscles, deep lacerations, bruises, scars, and expensive medical bills. German Shepherds have a bite force of PSI pound-force per square inch, or the measure of strength that a bite inflicts on the victim , compared to humans with a bite force of PSI. In fact, the American Animal Hospital Association lists the German Shepherd as one of the six breeds with the most dangerous bites, based on a US study. Therefore, training your GSD to inhibit her bite is mandatory as it not only rewards you with a well-behaved dog, but also ensures your safety as well as the safety of the people around you. A crucial step towards correcting this nasty behavior is to first understand why German Shepherd puppies bite. Nipping or biting stems from various reasons. Understanding the root of the behavior will equip you with the proper corresponding countermeasures to correct it. German Shepherds Have a High Prey Drive One of the primary and distinct characteristics thatmake a German Shepherd a popular choice for police and military work is their high prey drive, coupled with their intelligence and high trainability. Take a look at the video below showing what GSDs were originally bred for. GSDs also have a natural inclination to chase almost everything that moves in their surroundings. They Are Teething As early as two weeks old, the baby teeth of pups start to come out. Puppies use their mouth to explore their environment, so nipping is to be expected. This behavior, called teething, can last until the puppy is six months old when all her adult teeth have started showing. Teething is very uncomfortable for puppies and can lead to sore gums, so puppies turn to anything to chew to soothe the discomfort. Unfortunately, this can include biting you! They May Be Taken From the Litter Too Early Young puppies learn to naturally inhibit their biting through socialization with their mother and their siblings. A puppy does not quite understand yet the force of her own bite unless she bites too hard and the recipient reacts by yelping out of pain. Taking a puppy away from her mother prematurely will therefore deprive her the chance to learn important socialization skills. As a rule of thumb, the American Kennel Club AKC recommends that you take home a puppy that is no less than eight weeks old. By this time, the puppy should have had ample time to interact with her playmates and learn bite inhibition. We concur that you should never take home a puppy that is less than 8 weeks old. In fact, more than half of the states in the U. This does not mean, however, that your puppy will completely stop nipping. As the new parent, it is your job to continue training the dog so that any subsequent bites should be gentler. Overstimulation can happen during playtime, or when your puppy has become cranky due to teasing. Your GSD puppy may also bite out of fear. Your puppy has but 2 defenses — to run away or to bite. If your puppy feels cornered, then biting is the defense that she will most often resort to. Because biting is normal canine behavior and GSDs are a breed that is more prone to it, the goal here is to inhibit the bite, not completely stop it. Do Start Training Early We keep mentioning throughout this site that training and socializing your GSD as soon as you get her home is crucial. Although training older dogs is not impossible, it is true that it is easier to train younger puppies, when habits are still new and can be easily corrected. If left untrained, adult German Shepherds can be prone to aggression towards other animals and humans, which can result in tragic situations. To get a better understanding of what is involved with these necessary steps, be sure to read these 2 excellent articles: German Shepherd Training Guide: All You Need to Know Do Use Toys as Alternative Items to Chew Puppies will nib on your hands or your feet especially during the teething stage. Train this behavior away by offering the puppy a toy whenever she starts biting your hand or your ankles. This teaches her what is acceptable to bite and which is not. It is good practice to always keep a chew toy nearby in anticipation of the biting behavior. She needs to understand that biting ends playtime and that it does not give her anything in return. In the Alpha Roll , the human pins down the dog on the floor on his side or back and holds that position to exert dominance. Besides, it has also been proven in many studies that dogs have very different behavior from wolves. Pinning your dog will cause him to freeze out of fear, which can also turn into aggression. It also teaches your dog that physical touch is something to be feared. Nobody wants to be punished by hand, not humans and certainly not dogs either. Do Reward Good Behavior Dog trainers and experts agree that positive reinforcement using rewards are highly effective in forming and keeping desirable behaviors as a puppy matures into an adult dog. If her nose touches your fingers without biting them, give her a treat and praise generously. Hold off the treat if she bites. Do this repeatedly until she associates the treat the reward with not biting your hand the good behavior. In fact, most dog bite cases in children occurred because of teasing! Instead, teach your child to be gentle with your pet , as even unintentional rough play can result in unwanted events. Dogs get cranky too, especially when they get hurt or feel that their privacy is being invaded. Never leave your child alone with your puppy unattended. Supervise their interactions at all times. Studies show that parents trust their dog around their kids too much that they overlook the signs that the dog is in distress. For tug games, keep in mind, however, that your dog must be calm and not overstimulated before playing. Otherwise, your puppy may get too serious and hold on to the rope too much. The AKC recommends that for breeds that are prone to aggression such as German Shepherds, tug-of-war can be safely carried out if the puppy knows you are in control and follows your commands. Once this has been established, a game of tugging can be used both as an exercise and as a reward for your dog. When playing, always remember to be gentle with tugging as your puppy still has baby teeth! By doing this, you are also socializing your puppy with other animals — an essential skill to learn for a well-rounded behavior. That being said, do not completely write off playing with your puppy! Playtime is still an excellent opportunity to bond with your dog, but make sure to keep it safe and fun by establishing boundaries. This method, however, is a matter of trial and error. Some puppies respond to this positively. On the other hand, many puppies get aroused by this and become even more aggressive. If you yelp and she stops biting without expressing any signs of aggression, the method has perhaps worked. You are then free to continue doing so until the puppy learns to stop biting hard. On the other hand, temper tantrums, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , are characterized by a stiff body, lips pulled back to show teeth, and growling. Biting will be more forceful and painful, since the behavior is typically caused by fear or anger. A German Shepherd puppy may be more prone to displaying this behavior, especially around unruly children. Bite inhibition is crucial especially among German Shepherds, a breed that is widely reported to be the culprit of many dog bites in America. Bite inhibition is simply one of the many important skills that your GSD must learn during her training. It can spell the difference between gentle playing and aggressive biting that leads to serious injuries. Always remember that dogs have feelings, too. They are not perfect little angels that never get angry. Even the most well-mannered dog in the world will snap out of irritation.
