Resist the temptation If a breeder asks you to take a puppy home at five to six weeks of age, be very suspicious. Only in the most dire circumstances should a breeder let puppies go this young. Bear in mind that some disreputable breeders will make up excuses to get rid of puppies when they get to this age. This is the point at which the puppies are becoming both time consuming, messy, and expensive to care for. It is a full time job keeping them fed and clean for the next couple of weeks. But a responsible breeder will have prepared for that. Short of a personal disaster, no reputable breeder will normally request or permit a puppy to leave her premises before eight weeks. Even more concerning is the practice of selling puppies at four or five weeks old, or in some cases, younger. So perhaps breeding standards are rising. But I do want to address one argument put to me recently. I received a letter from a reader in India who felt I did not understand the situation there. He told me that in many cases, breeders were so awful that puppies were most likely to survive if removed from them at the earliest possible opportunity. The problem with this argument is exactly the same as the argument here in the UK or in the USA against buying puppies from puppy mills or pet stores, or out of the back of a van. And in may cases to an early death. The breeder is only in it for money, so every puppy they sell, they will replace with another. Short of dramatic changes in the law which are not going to happen any time soon, the only way to stop this horrible trade is to dry up the demand for poorly bred puppies. And that is really down to you, the puppy buyer. The outlook for the adult female dogs used to produce those puppies is even worse, so please spare a thought for them too. Buying a puppy from the wrong breeder just perpetuates bad breeding practices. The answer is to walk away and find someone that is breeding dogs responsibly. Your two week wait! So what can you do between the time your puppy is six weeks old and the day he is ready to come home? The litter will greet their mother noisily when she returns to them, and try hard to follow her out of the whelping box whenever she leaves. The puppies themselves are now eating solid food several times a day and gradually being weaned of their dependency on her milk. Puppies will still suckle ravenously when their mother returns and she will now often feed them standing up and only for a short time. She will also be teaching the puppies not to bite too hard. So, they should be increasingly spending time with humans and learning to be familiar with the sounds and sights of a human family environment. Puppies being raised in kennels must be brought into a home environment regularly from now on to ensure they develop into confident, friendly dogs. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. This coat factor comes from the beginning of the breed when the dogs used to start the German Shepherd breed were more "Collie Coated". During the development of the breed and the standard it was determined that this coat was not water proof for the dogs out tending the herds. Also the long hair that grows between the pads on the feet also hindered their ability to do their work in the winter as snow would pack on the hair between their pads. The SV standard did not allow them to be bred, up until just a few months ago. Now Long Coat German Shepherds are allowed to be shown and breed surveyed. So if you have a long coat a long coat carrier and a short coat non carrier you will not get a long coat from that breeding. This because one is a carrier and one is not a carrier, even though both are short coats. Does this mean that all puppies that 2 short coat German Shepherds that carry the long coat recessive gene will only produce long coat puppies? No, they will produce usually more short coats then long, but not always. Example: Onis IS a long coat recessive gene carrier. So when she is breed to Jerry Lee we have long coat puppies.
