Read More About Our Australian Labradoodles and their origin This classic example of logical and planned crossbreeding was created in the country of Australia in the s. The goal of the Australian clubs is to create a new "breed" with the best attributes of the original breeds. The original objective was to produce assistance dogs that do not shed hair for people with allergies. Australians, on the other hand, have taken the Labradoodle a few steps further. In mid it was announced that the Australian Labradoodle was not just a Labrador x Poodle cross , but was a breed in its own right developed over many years with particular goals in mind. To accomplish these goals, further development was done with parent breed infusions added to the already blooming Labrador x Poodle cross lines. The developers of the breed sought out the best way in which to compliment the Australian Labradoodle breed, and to develop the authentic qualities that they find and love in these dogs. In the very first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written which reflected these goals. The Australian Labradoodle currently consists of 6 different breeds in its origin. We truly believe our Australian Labradoodles are the best dog available and will make a great addition to your family. Final Thoughts The Ideal Pug Owner Before jumping straight into the different Pug dog colors, let's look at this toy breed in more detail and see if you would be the right fit. As mentioned before, this is such a dainty breed; they're perfect for an apartment. If you know an older person who wants company, they're even better suited! Unlike some dogs, most Pugs only require one hour of exercise daily. This can be achieved through play or a walk. Their playful personality makes them great entertainment for kids, and they are highly affectionate. If you're the type of person who loves to kick back and watch Netflix, then a pug will easily climb into your lap for a cuddle. They do have some comical moments and sleep a lot when they get older, being relatively low maintenance. However, their coat sheds regularly and requires frequent grooming every 6 weeks. So, if you suffer from allergies, especially dog hairs, the Pug breed may not be the best to have in your home. They also state the unrecognized clubs for competitions also. All The Pug Colors Many more Pug colors exist in addition to the ones recognized by the kennel clubs, which are: Black Black pugs have a dark rich coat that is solid in color. They also have a black mask, ears, and nose also. Sometimes there may be small white markings that occur on their chest, but this does not always happen. When a black Pug ages, it may be prone to having gray hairs on its face or body. For a Pug to have a black coat, only one of its parents must carry the black gene. Unlike some genes, black is the most dominant gene and overpowers other colors. However, black Pugs are the second most popular coat type, first is fawn. Fawn Out of all the Pug colors, fawn is the most common. To describe this color, it closely resembles a lightly toasted marshmallow or a milky coffee. A fawn Pug is not always solid; there can be slight variances. Sometimes fawn Pugs can have a stripe of hairs that are black on their tips, running down the back that break away the fawn color. This is because Fawn pugs can have coat color temperatures ranging from light to medium. The major difference between an Apricot Pug and a fawn Pug is the orange in their coats. Often they will have richer orange hues that are deeper than the ones seen in a fawn coat. This color contains a shiny gray sheen on the coat and is also the lightest coat color for a Pug. Many kennel clubs do not recognize the silver fawn Pug, so they may request the Pug to be registered under fawn. White A post shared by Truffle the White Pug trufflethewhitepug In extremely rare situations, you may come across a white Pug. If you do find this, then the Pug is most likely to be an Albino. They will have a light pink nose, paws, lips, and ears alongside their coat. Their coat hair will look in between white and cream. On the contrary, white Pugs may also exist due to a genetic mutation called Leucism, making the melanin in their DNA difficult to form. These colors tend to be black, ranging to grey, and are often seen in other dog breeds like the American Bull Dog, Boxer, and Bull Terrier. Compared to other Pug colors, this coat is not accepted and is often heavily disqualified in the show ring. Like a Panda, they have a smooth black and white coat. This coat color is believed to be created by a Pekingnese and a Pug. However, this coat color is rare, and many breeders will charge extremely high prices for them. Merle A post shared by Rebecca Schmidt happypug. They also have patches of blueish grey and blue in the coat. As opposed to coat color, merle is more like a pattern seen in the coat. Often Merle Pugs are not purebred and are associated with many health problems like hearing impairments, hip dysplasia, skin infections, vision impairments, and risk of skin cancer. Can a non-standard colored pug still be registered with a kennel club? For example: the AKC recognizes two pug colors as breed standard, fawn and black. These are the colors required for a pug to be a show dog and compete in the ring. They are the breed standard. However, a non-fawn or black pug can still be AKC registered — they will just not be allowed in the show ring. Silver-fawn, apricot, and even rare and controversial colors like brindle, can be registered with the AKC and listed as an alternate color. So, if you see a non-standard colored pug listed as registered with the AKC, it is entirely possible. You can read it here. The pug breed standard is the blueprint for the breed, and the target for which breeders should aim. The Pug Dog Club of America firmly states that: All reputable breeders of pugs are not interested in the development of any color of pug other than fawn or black. The most common pug colors: Fawn Pug Fawn is the most common pug color. Their muzzle or mask, and ears, should be as black as possible. Black Pug Even though fawn is the most common color of pug, the black gene is dominant. Black pugs have a rich, dark coat, and their muzzle or mask, and ears are black too. Silver-fawn and Silver Pugs Silver-fawn is oftentimes labeled as a type of fawn. They have a shiny gray sheen to their coats and are the lightest color a pug can be. Silver-fawn pugs are pretty rare, and many who have them categorize them as fawns, instead of silver-fawns. Apricot Pugs Apricot pugs have warm undertones of orange in their coats. The hues of orange are richer and deeper in color than the common fawn coloring. They include:. Conclusion Origin and Physical Appearance The white-colored pug is a result of selective breeding. The American Kennel Club mentions only two varieties that is black and fawn and does not certify white one, as it is crossbred. These are often confused with the albino pug due to their coat color. These have a pure white coat with a dark muzzle on their neck. Breeders tend to charge more for designer dogs and continue to crossbreed due to their demand because it is a distinct color not possessed by all. Rarity These are extremely rare, and I am sure you must have spotted one in pictures only if you have ever seen them. A Controversial Breed? Yes, you heard it right. This is a controversial breed due to its origin. Interesting Fact There is a famous white pug, named Marshmallow, you can find him all over the internet. It looks so adorable and angelic that I am sure you will be mesmerized just by one look. Conclusion Despite being a controversial variety, these are still in demand, so breeders continue breeding. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Colorado Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Love Letters We adopted our "Kona" about a year and a half ago and she has been the best dog ever! I worked in Rescue for years and was completely against breeders before I was introduced to WiggleButz. It is so refreshing to meet a good, responsible breeder who genuinely cares for their animals and the breed. She has had absolutely no health problems, is incredibly smart and has the sweetest temperament. Calley was incredible to work with and her love and devotion was apparent on every step of the process. Xoxo Devoted customers for life. From the moment Max Journey sat on my lap, looked into my eyes, and licked me on the lips — I knew he was the one for me. Max is a smart, playful, loving, and has taught me the patience I need to be a good Dog Mom to him. He has the biggest puppy dog eyes, a beautiful red fawn coat, a velvety black mask, flawless bat ears, and perfect little nub of a tail. They also are amazed at how chill he is, especially for being a month old puppy. I love him more each day and cannot imagine my life without him. We both are grateful to have found each other and we continue to form an unbreakable bond; however, we never forget you and the rest of your family. Thank you for caring for my little guy while I found my way to him. Puppy pads Create a Schedule German Shepherd pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. For the complete list please see our Shepherd Breeders page. Before you look for a German Shepherd breeder in Missouri, first determine how much you can afford and how big of a dog do you want. The prices will depend on the size and the color of the puppy as well as on its bloodline. More popular colors such as black, gray or tan are typically more expensive than the other ones. German Shepherd puppy prices also vary because there are many breeders available in the market today. If you want to get a dog from a well-known German Shepherd breeder, then expect to pay more. There are many ways to find German Shepherd breeders in Missouri but a good place to start is by asking your friends and family if they know anyone who has a dog from this breed. The key things you need to look for when choosing a breeder include: Are they licensed? Do they have any complaints against them? How long have they been breeding dogs? Do they have any health guarantees? Do they allow you to visit their premises? Do they have a good reputation? Thanks for reading. A good breeder will have no problem giving you the names and numbers of happy customers. This is a great way to get an idea of what the breeder is really like. References will help you feel confident in your decision to buy a puppy from this breeder and it will also give you peace of mind knowing that you can contact these people if you have any problems or concerns down the road. References will also help you ascertain the quality of the breeder. Do not be afraid to ask for references and then actually call them. Be Aware of Backyard Breeders Unfortunately, there are also many backyard breeders in Missouri who may be interested in making a quick buck rather than producing healthy dogs. These people often have little or no knowledge about breeding dogs and may not take proper care of their animals. Spend some time researching different breeders in your area and ask as many questions as you can. This will help ensure that you find a responsible breeder who is dedicated to the health of their puppies. Most breeders will have a veterinarian that they use regularly. If you can, ask your breeder for the name of their vet and then give them a call to find out more about the kind of care that they provide. If you buy a puppy from this kind of breeder, there is every chance it will come with some sort of health problem and so finding an appropriate vet will be very difficult, if not impossible. Most responsible breeders will do this as early as possible, exposing their puppies to different people and stimuli such loud noises and other animals at a very young age. How The Breeder Socializes Their Puppies Will Impact You as A Pup Owner If a breeder does not take this approach, it may be tough for you to socialize your German Shepherd later in life and this could cause problems when interacting with other dogs or people. Ask lots of questions and be sure to visit the breeder before buying a puppy to confirm their credibility. This is a key consideration that many people forget when looking for a breeder. The German Shepherd Dog is one of the most popular breeds in America for many reasons, including its versatility, trainability and loyalty. This can be a recipe for disaster, as this kind of breeder will only be interested in making money and so may not take proper care of their dogs or pups. Puppies need to learn a lot of things and so should not be taken away from the breeder before they are at least 12 weeks old. Ideally, you should wait until your pup is around 14 or 15 weeks before bringing them home for the first time. This includes buying all the items that they could conceivably need including food bowls, a bed and toys. When you do bring them home, you should introduce them gently to their new environment. Put things like their bed and bowl down for them so that they have some familiar smells in the house. Hide all your cords and make sure that any chemicals or poisonous plants are out of reach. Remember, it will take time for your puppy to adjust to their new home, so be patient and give them plenty of love. You should also make sure that you have a good vet lined up in case they ever get sick. Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy One of the most important things you will need to do as a pet owner is to potty train your dog. This can be a daunting task, but with some patience and consistency, it can be done. The best way to potty train your German Shepherd is by taking them out regularly on a schedule. Once they have been taken outside and they go to the bathroom, praise them and give them a treat. This will help associate going to the bathroom with something positive. If you catch them going to the bathroom in the house, scold them immediately and put them outside. This will help them learn that this is not acceptable behavior. If you slack off, they will likely start going to the bathroom in the house again. This will help prevent any accidents from happening in the house. German Shepherds are wonderful dogs, but like all breeds, they come with plenty of responsibility. If you want to be a responsible owner, make sure that you consider all the above advice so that your dog lives a happy life in Missouri. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Contact Us About Us Von Goedehaus German Shepherds is a small working line German Shepherd breeder who has been raising and working with working line dogs since , and has been breeding working line German Shepherds since .They first fell in love with the breed when working in law enforcement. They purchased their very first working line German Shepherd puppy in and their love for the breed grew from there. While attending training classes with his puppy, Kevin caught the dog training bug and has turned that love for training into a life long passion. After making the tough decision to leave law enforcement to follow a new dream, he decided to attend the Tom Rose School for professional dog trainers and the rest as they say is history. Kevin has now been in the professional dog training industry since .He uses his expertise to take an active role in assisting Von Goedehaus puppy buyers with finding the right puppy for them. Cheryl developed a love for working dogs when she had the opportunity to work alongside some of the finest imported European lines when she was a police officer for .She could be found asking the handlers if she could play with their dogs after their job on various scenes was done. Becoming obsessed with the idea of having a German Shepherd of her own, she decided to bring home her first working line puppy in .The pup was a bit of a challenge to say the least, so Cheryl turned to online forums and pages dedicated to the breed. Deciding to start her own online community for the breed, with the help of amazing admins she grew the following for both the facebook page and group into a massive community. Over the years, the facebook page and group has helped answer questions for German Shepherd owners around the world ranging from nutrition to behavior related issues and more , or directed them to professionals in their area who could help them. The community has also assisted in helping countless homeless German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and their mixes in finding forever loving homes. Cheryl believes there is more than one way to give back to the breed, and it should not be unheard of for breeders to be involved in helping rescues in some way. Both Kevin and Cheryl decided to put quality dogs into the hands of working dog enthusiasts for work and also for families who wanted a stable active family companion dog. They began to utilize some of the finest European Working Line German Shepherd bloodlines to create the foundation for their kennel. They continue to further the bloodline they created from both the puppies they hold back from their breedings as well as importing very high quality dogs from trusted friends overseas. No matter what you are looking for in a quality pet or working prospect, you can trust them to work with you in finding the right dog for your family situation. Louis, MO. Exercise Grooming In the 19th century, Shepherds bred all kinds of dogs mainly to herd and guard flocks. Thus, the dogs needed to display a high level of intelligence, extra normal strength, resilience, courage and bravery, a keen sense of smell, and trainability qualities, etc. These mongrel combinations provided dog breeds that could efficiently guard and herd flocks but differed in appearance and ability, from one locality to another. The boxador dog is a crossbreed developed by mixing a purebred boxer and a purebred Labrador retriever. Although both parent breeds are officially recognized by the AKC, the boxer Lab mix has the status of a designer breed. Boxadors have several different names and are also known as laboxers, boxerlabs, and boxerdors. While some boxerlabs take more after one parent than the other, others are a perfect blend of both parent breeds. Generally speaking, most inherit a boxer-like frame but are sizably built like their Labrador retriever parents. Although their appearance is unpredictable, there are a few traits you can expect to see when it comes to size, coat, and color. Size Being a cross between a Labrador retriever and a boxer, boxerlabs tend to be medium to large size dogs. Most are between 23 and 25 inches high at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 50 to pounds when fully grown. And males tend to be larger than females. Color The Labrador retriever comes in three colors — yellow, chocolate , and black. On the other hand, the boxer also comes in three different colors — white, fawn, and brindle. Keeping this in mind, it comes as no surprise that the Lab boxer mix can come in many different coat colors. The most commonly seen colors in this mix are brown, black, brindle, and white. Coat While a Lab has a short, double water-resistant coat, the boxer is a short-haired breed with a smooth and silky single coat. Most laboxers inherit the short, silky, and smooth coat of their boxer parents; however, some can have a denser coat of a Labrador. Since your boxerlab will inherit character traits from both its parent breeds, you should meet both the Lab and the boxer parents. Since both boxers and Labrador retrievers are friendly, playful, loving, and devoted companions, chances are that their mix will be too. Although boxer Labs can act as either of their parent breeds, they are generally extremely playful and energetic. Depending on how much your mix takes after its boxer parent, they might act goofy and cheerful most of the time. Boxerlabs form strong bonds with their people and do best in large families that have the time and energy to interact and play with them several times during the day. People-oriented and loving, this mix craves companionship and tends to develop separation anxiety when left alone a lot. If they are forced to stay home alone while you are at work, boxerlabs can easily become bored and destructive. Activity Level As an offspring of two very energetic working breeds, the laboxer is a very active dog with high exercise needs. Being such an active and athletic dog, your mix will need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day in addition to two walks. Activities such as running, hiking, swimming, or agility are all great ways to keep your pooch exercised and in excellent shape. Since boxerlabs love to play, games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, hide and seek, and tug-of-war are ideal ways to interact with your pooch and keep them entertained and exercised at the same time. Having a securely fenced backyard can be a big bonus when owning this mix. This way, you can keep your laboxer exercised and in great shape without leaving the comforts of your home. This mix craves companionship and is happiest when involved in all family activities. But, besides love and affection, you should also pay attention to: Exercise As mentioned previously, the lab boxer mix needs at least 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day. In addition to two regular daily walks, you should take your dog for a run, hike, or swim to burn excess energy and stay in good shape. Fun-loving, playful, and goofy, this mix loves games and will enjoy having a variety of interactive dog toys that will stimulate their curious mind. Games such as fetch or hide and seek are also a form of exercise that will also keep your pooch entertained and mentally stimulated. Intellectual Stimulation In addition to being highly energetic, laboxers are also intelligent dogs that can easily become bored without mental stimulation. If left to their own devices without interactive toys, your mix will chew and rifle through your belongings just to have some fun. And when you are at home, interact and play with your pooch as much as you can to stave off boredom and encourage good behavior. Companionship True to their parent breeds, boxadors are outgoing, people-loving, and easy-going dogs that form strong bonds with their owners and families. Bred to be loving companions, laboxers are delighted when they are involved in all family activities and are best suited for large families. This mix craves affection and company and can easily develop separation anxiety and other behavioral problems if left at home alone a lot. Ideally, a boxador dog should live in a large family where they will have company at all times. Grooming Most boxerlabs have short glossy coats that are easy to keep clean and are a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Brushing your pooch once or twice a week is enough to remove loose hair and dander and keep their coat clean. In addition to regular brushing, you will also need to bathe your dog once every two months or as needed. Diet An ideal diet for a Lab boxer mix should be formulated for medium to large-sized breeds with high energy. Make sure the food you are feeding to your pooch is rich in protein and reinforced with all essential vitamins and minerals. Like their Labrador retriever parents, this mix has a tendency to gain weight easily and can become obese in no time. To prevent weight gain and all health problems associated with it, feed your dog two times a day and stick to a regular feeding schedule. Known Health Problems The boxerlab is considered a healthy breed, but they are predisposed to some of the same health problems that boxers and Labrador retrievers face. The most common health issues seen in this designer breed are: Hip and elbow dysplasia: Both boxers and Labrador retrievers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so boxerlabs can develop it too. Allergies: Like people, dogs can develop food or environmental allergies. Itching is the most common symptom associated with allergies. However, some dogs also exhibit respiratory problems and might cough, sneeze, wheeze, or have a runny discharge from their eyes or nose. Hypothyroidism: This is a relatively common endocrine problem in dogs caused by an underactive thyroid gland. Dogs suffering from hypothyroidism usually experience symptoms of lethargy, weight gain, and changes to the skin and coat. Life Expectancy The Labrador boxer mix has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. But, when cared for properly and taken to regular veterinary check ups, this mix can live longer. Highly intelligent and eager to please, most laboxers are fairly easy to house train, and learn basic obedience. Boxerlabs, like all other dogs, react the best to positive reinforcement training techniques and reward-based training. The idea behind this approach is to reward good behavior using treats or praise and to ignore bad behavior. This type of training has been proven to give the best results and is highly effective even if you are dealing with an extremely willful dog. Besides training, laboxers can also benefit from early socialization and should be exposed to many different people, situations, sounds, and sights from a young age. Early socialization can help your laboxer puppy get used to other people and pets and grow into a friendly and well-rounded dog. Who Should Own A Boxador? Bred to be a loyal and devoted companion, the Lab boxer mix is best suited for active people and families with children. This friendly mix craves companionship and is best suited for large homes and families who can spend time and play with their dog every day. Buying A Boxer Lab Mix Puppy Spend some time researching reputable Lab boxer mix breeders before you decide to welcome a laboxer puppy into your home. Since this is a fairly new designer breed, be prepared to spend more time researching and tracking down a reputable breeder. Once you locate a breeder you like, schedule an appointment to meet the puppies and the mother and to inspect the facilities they are kept in. If by any chance the breeder refuses to show you the conditions the puppies are kept in, walk away and look for another breeder. A reputable breeder will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and will also be able to provide health certificates for both parents and all puppies. However, you may end up paying more, depending on the breeder, your location, lineage, and gender. History Of The Breeds Boxer Originating in Germany, the boxer is a medium to a large-size working dog breed that was used as a guard dog. Although they might seem intimidating, boxers are goofy and mischievous canines that make great family companions. Highly energetic, easy to groom, and loving, the boxer is a great choice if you are looking for a loyal family pet that can also double as a guard dog. Easy to train, friendly, gentle, and affectionate, Labs make great family pets and companions to people of all ages including children. Due to their amazing temperament and high trainability, Labrador retrievers are often used as service dogs for people with disabilities and make great guide dogs. Boxerlabs make amazing pets for active people or large families with children. This loyal, energetic, playful, and friendly mix forms strong bonds with its people and likes to be involved in all family activities. If you are active and have enough time to interact and play with your dog every day, the Lab boxer mix will be a great pet. Are Boxer Labs aggressive? However, they form strong bonds with their owners and are naturally suspicious of strangers. Therefore, early socialization is a must if you want your mix to grow into a friendly and well-behaved dog. However, unlike its boxer parent that might not be too friendly with strangers, it has a calmer disposition and would not bark unnecessarily, enjoying human company with an eagerness to please its owner, and with a separation anxiety out of sheer loyalty. Care Exercise Boxadors would constantly try to eat, and thus gaining weight like the labrador, for which reason, brisk exercise for at least an hour is a must, that might be divided into schedules daily. Grooming Already famous for their glossy coat, they rarely need a bath, unless too untidy. Health Problems Although a generally healthy breed, but however, because of their specific allergy to grains they might end up developing syndromes like dermatological irritations, diarrhea loose motion , stomach-licking or foot-licking etc. If kept alone for long periods of time, they might suffer from boredom or loneliness, affecting their psychological health. Training The overly-happy boxadors must be trained to socialize with people and pets and learn dog manners as a puppy, so that they would remain within the limits of sweetness in the family, knowing the rules to remain calm and balanced. Feeding Meat should be the first ingredient, better whole meat like chicken or turkey or red meat. Grains like oats, wheat, rice, barley etc. A high-quality dry dog food divided into two equal halves during lunch and dinner is recommended. Eating is in the genes of this breed. Hence, their food habits need to be monitored, especially when they are full-grown. Interesting Facts The gloss in the coat of the boxador comes from the natural oils present in their body hair. This dog has a tail that is either coiled, or else they are docked. The boxador is an active dog who's affectionate and loyal to her entire family. As a mix of two highly intelligent breeds , she has earned a reputation for being easy to train and eager to join any family adventure. But she also comes from two high-energy breeds and needs to be kept busy. As a hybrid dog , the boxador can vary in size depending on which parent breed she takes after the most. She will likely stand about 2 feet tall and weigh between 50—80 pounds. At her best, every inch of the boxador is filled with exuberance and love. She will need an active owner who can match her endless stamina, and she will be happiest when kept close to her people. Appearance The boxador is perpetually ready to play. Her toned, muscular body is frequently in motion, often chasing a ball or trying to start a friendly game of tug-of-war. Even if she has the longer snout of the Labrador retriever, she will likely still have droopy jowls. Because of this, she might be prone to drooling —especially when she gets excited. Both of her parent breeds are large dogs , so your boxador will grow up into a big bundle of energy. The boxador is expressive with her eyes and ears, often looking at you with a longing glance and perked up ears to tell you she's ready to go for a long walk. If she takes after her boxer side, her coat will be short and won't shed much. However, because a Labrador's coat can range from short to medium in length, a boxador will likely experience seasonal shedding. The boxador can come in a mix of colors, with the dominant shades being fawn, brown, black, or brindle. And while it's not guaranteed, the boxador often has a white patch on her chest and a muzzle of black fur. This means the mixed breed is ideal for many on-the-go families, as long as you make sure you have time to play with your boxador every day. Bored dogs are not good dogs because they're going to chew on belongings. They need families that are going to be active and keep them busy. She gets along incredibly well with children and other dogs, especially if she is well-socialized as a puppy. Boxadors are motivated by praise and affection, so owners should train her using positive reinforcement training and give her plenty of attention when she does something correctly. She will be highly motivated to learn different games alongside you. Both parent dogs are known for their intelligence and ability to communicate exactly what they need with their owners. So pay attention when your boxador is whining or nudging you—that probably means she needs to go outside or just wants some more playtime. You need to get them all kinds of games and activities. Take them on a jog or play fetch, all of that good stuff. She's not going to want to entertain herself in a fenced-in yard ; she wants you to play with her. While she is a well-tempered dog, the boxador should not be left at home for hours alone. If left by herself, the boxador can be prone to make her own entertainment think: chewing decorative pillows or pulling over houseplants to keep herself entertained. Loretta Moraco, a director at Chelsea's Hope Boxer Rescue that works with boxers and boxer mixes in the Northeast, says many people don't understand the energy level these dogs bring to a household. By training your boxador that her crate is a safe, comfortable space, she will feel more secure there whenever her owners do need to leave her alone for a short period of time. Crate training can also limit undesirable behavior that can happen when boxadors get bored. The boxer side is mischievous and curious, and you don't want them eating something they shouldn't when left alone. As a general rule, boxador owners should be prepared for a dog that wants to run and play 99 percent of the time. While there are some exceptions, boxador owners need to be ready to take their new pet on long, daily walks. She is exceptionally friendly thanks to her Labrador side, and she will thrive when socializing with other humans and dogs. They need doggy daycare and activities and games outside. They're literally like a toddler for a really long time, that's the best I can describe it. Keep them busy, and don't let them get bored. It's a good idea to get her used to regular teeth brushing as a puppy because her boxer side can be prone to dental issues. If she has face folds particularly around her mouth , you'll want to keep them clean with regular bathing in order to avoid any bacteria buildup. Health A healthy boxador can live between 10—12 years, but they are likely to experience health issues in their lifetime. Owners should consider investing in pet insurance if they bring home a boxador because both breeds are prone to certain health conditions that can become expensive in their older years. A boxador's health largely depends on what genetics she inherits from her parents and grandparents. The Labrador side often experiences elbow and hip dysplasia , according to the Labrador Retriever Club. These issues can be addressed with joint supplements recommended by your veterinarian. They can also experience certain heart disorders, as well as a condition called exercise-induced collapse. The boxer parent's genes can make boxadors predisposed to cancers that often impact the brain, thyroid, or spleen, according to the American Boxer Club. They can also be at risk for hereditary heart diseases , including arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy or Aortic Stenosis. They could experience discomfort with her hindquarters later in life if they inherit the boxer's predisposition to degenerative myelopathy. The popularity of boxer hybrids including the boxer-Lab mix in recent years has actually been, in part, an effort to mitigate some of the more heartbreaking health conditions that impact the purebred dogs. They are great with kids, smart, and goofy. And a lot of people who love the boxer breed are now looking for a hybrid dog because they are hoping it eliminates some of the health issues. While many boxadors live long and healthy lives, being aware of the potential health issues is the best way to ensure she is kept comfortable and happy. History As a hybrid dog, the boxador's origin is murky. Mixed breeds are not registered by the American Kennel Club, so their history is undocumented unlike purebred dogs whose history goes back for centuries. The most likely explanation for the boxador is that breeders sought to combine the best traits of the two beloved, active breeds. Especially for owners who worry about the health issues surrounding the boxer breed, the Labrador retriever—as the nation's most popular dog—makes an optimal pairing to offset some of the boxer's health risks. While the boxador's history is largely speculation, she comes from very famous parents. The Labrador retriever originated in Canada as a loyal waterfowl dog before gaining a reputation as a loving family dog. The boxer is the product of breeders in Germany and Belgium who wanted a strong hunting dog. Eventually, the boxer became a farming dog who enjoyed spending time with her family. Because the boxador can be prone to certain health issues, it's especially important that potential owners get health records for the dog they are adopting. If you are bringing home a puppy from a boxador breeder, take steps to avoid a puppy mill scam by working with individuals who are transparent about health screenings and allow you to meet the puppy on-site so you can ensure she was raised in a good home. Fun Facts While the boxer-Labrador retriever mix is most commonly referred to as a boxador, the dogs can also be called a boxerlab or Laboxer. In , the Labrador retriever was named the most popular dog breed for the 30th year in a row. The same year, the boxer was named the 14th most popular dog breed in the United States. A rescued boxador named Wesson is the frequent star on the popular TikTok account willandwesson. Was this page helpful? Chopped carrots or celery make great little healthy treats. Your vet can help you develop a care routine. Boxadors love to eat and will rapidly gain weight if they are allowed to free feed. Pick a high quality dog food and stick to a feeding schedule; two feedings per day could be ideal to keep this pooch happy. They also need an exercise schedule. A 30 minute hike, walk, or game of fetch, plus an hour of active running around a yard will help burn off pent up energy. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. Keeping them clean and dry is the best way to avoid doctor visits. If your dog develops a pungent aroma or is scratching their ears excessively, they may have an ear infection and will require a vet exam. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth a minimum of three times a week. Clean your dogs eyes as you would your own. You can use a cloth or your fingers to wipe away discharge or debris that collects in the corners. Boxador Feeding An ideal Boxador diet should be formulated for an active, medium- to large-sized breed. Limit their amount of treats, as well. The main colors of Boxadors are; black, brown, brindle, and white. Rarely solid, their coats typically have a blend of two or more colors. Luckily, their coats are very easy to groom. A good brushing per week will probably do. They may self groom and are considered a pretty clean dog. Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any tail pulling or biting on the part of either party. No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Learn more about this pup by reading about their parent breeds, the Boxer and Labrador Retriever. Boxador puppies are known for being intelligent and enthusiastic dogs. But their spirited temperament is not right for every family setup. Watch these cute Boxer Lab mix puppies playing! The boxer lab mix, also known as the Boxador, is a hybrid of the Boxer and the Labrador Retriever breeds. Compared to its parent breeds, the Boxador mix itself is very new. But, its parents have long histories living and working alongside humans. Labs originated as working dogs, retrieving game for fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada. When they were first bred in 19th century Germany, Boxers were used as fighting dogs. Boxer Lab Mix Characteristics With cross breeds it is often hard to predict which parent a puppy will resemble. Boxers can weigh up to 80lbs and reach 25 inches tall. Labradors are similarly large. Boxador full grown tend to be between 23 and 25 inches tall and weigh up to 80lbs. Although females are smaller than males. Regardless of the mix of your genes your pup ends up with, your Boxer Lab Mix dog is likely to be a medium to large dog, active, loyal, easy to train and very fond of challenges — of both the physical and mental kind! Boxers are fawn or brindle. Often with white patches. Their offspring can be any mixture of these! The Boxador is usually brindle, and these dogs often have white markings. If you want a black Lab Boxer mix, your puppy will likely still have some white on them. Your best bet is to mix a black Lab with a dark Boxer. But, even a black Lab Boxer mix can have unpredictable coloring, despite the dominant genes for black fur. Do Boxer Lab Mixes Shed? When it comes to coat, the Boxer Lab mix usually takes after its Boxer parent. These pups typically have short, smooth hair that sheds very little and is easy to care for. However if your Boxador dog has more Labrador in its genes you might have to deal with some shedding. Thankfully this is usually seasonal and can be kept in check with regular grooming. Are Boxadors Hypoallergenic? The Boxer Lab mix might have a short coat, but it is likely to be a high shedder at least part of the time. They produce allergens in their dander and saliva, and are not suitable for dog allergy suffering owners. Boxador Temperament The Boxer Lab mix will fall somewhere between its parents. But, luckily, the Labrador and Boxer breeds have quite similar temperaments. Both Boxers and Labradors are very loving and loyal. They think nothing of climbing on their people for a cuddle, despite their large size! Both Boxers and Labradors are usually great with older children. They are considered gentle giants and will eagerly run after little ones. Although they have been known to accidentally bowl over smaller family members in their excitement. Labradors also love playing with canine companions, but Boxers are less reliable in this area. Poorly socialized Boxers can be prone to aggression towards strangers and other dogs. Boxers are instinctive guardians and proud to play the role of family protector. But you can reduce this through thorough socialization during the puppy stages and by meeting the Boxer parent and ensuring that they seem happy and confident around strangers. Even the most friendly breed, like the Labrador, will benefit. Finding them puppy friends to play with will encourage them to be calm and docile with other dogs when fully grown. Attending puppy classes is a great way to do this. But, make sure you also socialize them to unfamiliar people, children, cats, other animals, and more. This will ensure your Boxador dog is as friendly outside the home as he is inside. They require a lot of exercise and enjoy running around with the family or playing a game of fetch. This can result in unwanted behaviors like barking, digging, or chewing. But, be wary of a shorter snout in the Boxador. Boxers suffer from a conformity issue called brachycephaly, which can cause trouble breathing and overheating when exercising. Use positive reward techniques for best results. You could even take your mix to a puppy training class, or attend an online dog training class. Boxador Health and Care Genetic diversity is improved in a cross breed compared with the parent breeds and the coefficient of inbreeding COI is much lower. Put simply, the COI of any mating describes how closely related the parent dogs are. Higher COIs are associated with an increase in health problems. The risk of this happening is lower if the puppies parents are not closely related. There are however, some health issues that are not recessive and can be passed on from just one parent. And there are common ancestors in some of our dog breeds that mean some diseases are present in both breeds. For that reason it is still possible that a cross bred dog could inherit genetic health problems. Labrador Health Labradors are not without their issues. This breed can suffer from hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. It can cause lameness and severe arthritic pain. Another issue to be aware of in Labs is eye disease. Retinal dysplasia was first noted in the breed in .Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a degenerative eye disease that is common in Labs. Only buy your puppy from a breeder who health tests the parents for all the potential problems their respective breeds could suffer from. Boxer Health A study found that Boxers are one of the most likely breeds to get cancer. According to Petplan, mast cell tumors are the 5th most common illness in Boxers. This breed is unfortunately also associated with heart disease. Aortic Stenosis is the most common major problem in the breed. The causes are not known but it is genetic and passed along certain bloodlines. ARVC affects males more than females and is most common in dogs older than .Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing and weight loss. Boxers can also suffer from Canine Degenerative Myelopathy. This is a neurodegenerative disease that can cause paralysis. Unfortunately more is not necessarily better and brachycephaly causes breathing difficulties and overheating It may be that being the Boxador rather than a purebred Boxer offers some protection against these diseases. It certainly reduces the skull shortening we see in brachycephalic breeds. This is a bit of a two edged coin because while the Boxer physique may benefit from a longer muzzle, the Labrador physique is unlikely to be improved with a shorter one. Reputable breeders will only breed from dogs that have been tested and cleared of these serious hereditary health problems. To give your pup a long and healthy life, make sure he gets plenty of exercise, a balanced diet and regular vet check-ups. Boxador Life Expectancy Labrador Retrievers have a lifespan of years. And, on average, Boxers live around years So in theory you can expect Boxer Labrador mix puppies to reach anywhere between 9 and 12 years old. In practice studies tend to find that crossbred dogs in general, live longer on average than most purebred dogs. But we currently have no evidence that this is the case for the Boxador in particular. Only you can decide if the Boxer Lab mix is the right fit for your home. These are large dogs with big hearts that will give as much as they take. Boxadors love being part of a family. They are great with children and enthusiastic playmates for families with school age children and up. But this cross breed needs lots of exercise. They are fiercely attached to their people and dislike being left for long periods of time. This is a dog that suits a family with an active lifestyle and lots of love to give. Boxer Lab Mix Rescue Adopting a shelter dog always comes with risk. But Boxadors in shelters need homes and rescuing puppies or older dogs can be very rewarding. Labrador and Boxer breed rescues also sometimes have crossbreeds available. Dogs from adoption centers are usually much cheaper than puppies. But, remember you may need to spend lots of time helping them work through behavioral issues from past experiences. Finding Your Boxador Puppy Never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store. Or from the back of a vehicle. Always visit the puppy in his own home in the presence of his mother, who should be relaxed, healthy and friendly. Sadly with any very fashionable breed, or breed mix, there are many out there who are just looking to make a quick buck. Socialize your Boxador very thoroughly, exposing him to all kinds of fun experiences and making sure that he meets many different types of people, places, machinery etc. Given Boxadors intelligent nature and working history, get started on training your dog right away. Boxador Breeders It can be challenging to find a responsible breeder of cross breeds as there is currently quite a stigma against mixed breeding in the dog world. You must ask to see those certificates — they are very important. The parent dogs must have been screened for any genetic diseases and the breeder should be very forthcoming with any questions. Looking for an exuberant best buddy? The Boxador — a cross between a boxer and Labrador retriever — is a marvelous mutt that has plenty to offer to his family members. What Is A Boxador? These canine companions are sure to love accompanying you on any adventure with a wagging tail following behind them. Most people love life with these enthusiastic and intelligent pups. The Beautiful, Bouncing Boxer These loyal, loving dogs are known for their playful personality and adorable looks. Boxers and most boxer mixes are athletic yet patient pups, who do well with all members of the family, big and small. In fact, boxers are some of the best dogs for babies in the world. Boxers want nothing more than to be around their family members and do well in active households where there is always something to keep them busy. Reaching about 65 to 80 pounds, these muscular pups need plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Boxers are also known for holding onto a puppy-like spirit well into adulthood. While this is undoubtedly charming, boxer owners must be ready to put in the work with training. These pups tend to drool and snore quite a bit, though they do not shed heavily. Despite their few shortcomings, these canine clowns are sure to make you laugh and leave a pawprint on your heart. These friendly, outgoing dogs are well-loved due to their people-pleasing attitudes and playful spirits. Labrador retrievers and Lab-mixes usually make amazing companions so long as they get the exercise and mental stimulation they need to keep their tails wagging. These sweet dogs love spending time with their family members and — like boxers — do well with kids and other pets. Labs are medium sized dogs weighing between 55 to 80 pounds. Luckily, these adaptable dogs are fairly intelligent and an easy-to-train dog breed , so long as they earn a treat or two for their efforts. Labrador retrievers were originally developed to help fishermen, and they were also used as bird-hunting dogs tasked with retrieving waterfowl. With that in mind, here are some general guidelines of what you can expect from a Boxador. This outline can help you determine whether or not these designer dogs are the right fit for your family and lifestyle. Size and Shape: Boxadors are medium to large dogs usually weighing between 60 and 90 pounds. These dogs often have a boxer-like frame, but with more bulk like their Labrador retriever parents. Temperament: The energetic Boxador is always ready to play and enjoys spending as much time as he can with his family. These pooches are likely to act like permanent puppies and do well around kids as long as they are taught to understand hoe yo interact gently with little ones. The Boxador is a loyal, happy-go-lucky dog that is always ready for his next adventure. That being said, these dogs may need access to a coat throughout the colder months to keep themselves cozy while out on walks. The main coat colors of the Boxador are black, white, brindle, and brown. Occasionally, these pups have white markings along the snout and chest like their boxer parents. Intelligence: The Boxador is wickedly smart though you may not have guessed it based on his sometimes clown-like personality. With the right incentive, these dogs are sure to learn a whole range of tricks as they are eager to please their families. Training Challenges: Luckily, these pups should be fairly easy to train. That being said, these pups will shed and need a brush at least once a week. Your Boxador will love going on regular runs, hikes, or playing an engaging game of fetch or frisbee whenever he can. Ideally, Boxador homes have a large, fenced-in yard where these sweet pooches can get out some of their endless energy. Health: These pups are pretty healthy, especially for larger dogs, and they have an average canine lifespan of 12 to 15 years. However, they are susceptible to health conditions shared by both parent breeds including hip dysplasia, cataracts, and diabetes. Here is a quick checklist to ensure these are the perfect pups for your family. You have a lively household. These sporty sweethearts want nothing more than to spend as much time as they can with their family members. These smart pups love staying mentally and physically engaged, so regular training sessions are a must. These pups are happy to curl up on the couch and offer lots of hugs and kisses, so long as they meet their exercise needs. You have enough time to entertain these active pups. Boxadors are not highly independent pups. These dogs thrive on action and will need owners who can fulfill that need with ample attention, exercise, and engaging activities like training sessions or using puzzle toys. These patient yet playful pups love spending time with children and adults. As long as their needs are met, these sweet pups are sure to make amazing canine companions. These dogs crave excitement and are happiest when they are with the people they love. The life-of-the-party Boxador needs an owner who understands that these intelligent, active, and social dogs need plenty of mental and physical stimulation on an everyday basis to feel their best. Tracking down a Boxador buddy can be difficult as it would be with any designer dog. That being said, you can always scour the internet for these furry friends. Getting a German Shepherd Puppy is no quick choice but in this blog, you will find a list of reputable breeders who has that special pup waiting for your family. This list is to help you determine the breeder you would like to go through but remember to always talk to them and make sure you know what you want from the breeder and the bloodline before getting a puppy. Vom Waldenhaus German Shepherds Vom Waldenhaus German Shepherds First up on the list is Vom Waldenhaus German Shepherds, a family-run operation dedicated to the health and betterment of the dogs and puppies they breed. Since the Forrest family has selectively bred their dogs to get a bloodline of sound-minded and well-structured dogs. With a long list of imported West German Show Line dogs used as the foundation of their bloodline, you will find puppies with few, if none, of the breed debilitating diseases such as Hip and Elbow Dysplasia and DM Degenerative Myelopathy. When taking care of the puppies they come with AKC registration, health guarantees, vaccines, and a comprehensive warranty. To ensure the best outcome for your puppy they keep them until ten weeks of age to provide proper socialization and to minimize the stress the puppies receive during transit or when they are first left alone at their new homes. They breed a specific set of genetics that gives their German Shepherds strong bones, sound minds, great temperaments, a willingness to please, natural protective instincts, and a mild drive for a total all-around family dog. The dogs you get from them are not going to be high-drive dogs with a strong bite, but good all-around dogs for the family that can work well in obedience, search, rescue, or therapy dogs. And for 25 years have had no exposure to fleas on the property removing any chance of illness caused by them. Pekingese Boston terrier Because of their short muzzles, these breeds have shorter or flattened throats and breathing passages, which can make them have breathing problems, including excessive panting at night. Check for signs of inadequate oxygen, like turning blue or purple cyanosis as this constitutes a veterinary emergency. Anxiety Panting at night is just one of the many signs of anxiety in dogs. This type of behavioral panting has nothing to do with feeling overheated; it's just how their body is reacting to a stressful situation if your dog has anxiety. These are the common causes of anxiety in dogs: Noises: Dogs have much better hearing than you do. Something that's loud to you can be incredibly loud to your pet, so loud noises can give your dog anxiety. For example, if you've ever burned food in the oven and your smoke detector went off, your dog might get anxious every time you cook because they're afraid of the loud noise your cooking caused last time. Dogs also commonly are afraid of storms and fireworks because they're loud, and your dog doesn't know where the sound is coming from or how to get away from it. Luckily, there are products on the market that can help soothe your pet during times of stress. You may even choose to talk to your vet about anxiety medication for stressful situations. Separation anxiety: Separation occurs when you leave your dog alone in the home after being used to you being around for a majority of the day. Many dogs get separation anxiety, but you can help train your pet to stay calm while you're gone with behavioral training, which can help them relax when you're not around. Changes to home environment: As we've discussed, a new environment can be stressful for dogs because they're creatures of habit. Changing your dog's environment can cause anxiety for a short period of time, but eventually, your pet should get used to your new home. Dogs that are adopted may be more anxious than dogs that have been raised in the same home since puppyhood. Dogs that have gone through multiple homes and shelters typically don't feel like they have a home until their new owner proves it to them. New dogs can be anxious because of a new environment and new people. Generalized anxiety: Panic attacks: 4. Anemia Another common reason why your dog is panting at night is anemia. Anemia is when the number of red blood cells decreases either by destruction, loss, or lack of production. Anemia causes an increased heart rate, which can make your dog start panting. When you work out and increase your own heart rate, you begin breathing heavily; the same thing happens to your dog when their heart rate increases. Dogs with anemia typically have energy loss, weakness, and a loss of appetite, along with panting and an increased heart rate. Age Many senior dogs pant at night for a number of reasons, which can include health conditions like anemia and Cushing's disease. Older dogs can also suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which disrupts their sleep-wake cycle, causing them to be restless at night. Older dogs may also be more anxious because they're not able to move around as much, or they may experience pain when walking or standing. Combined with changes to their daily life, dogs can become stressed more easily as they get older, which may result in panting. Heart Disease Dogs with heart disease and heart failure pant more because their heart is working harder to pump oxygen throughout the body. Rapid breathing is just one indication of heart failure in dogs because of fluid buildup in the lungs. Dogs can get heart disease from heartworms or heartworm disease, so it's important to keep your dog protected by getting heartworm prevention medication from your vet. Luckily, heartworm is both preventable and can be treated if it's caught early. Obesity Just like in humans, obesity can lead to a wide range of health complications for dogs, including heavier breathing at panting. Dogs with obesity typically suffer from arthritis, heart problems, and joint problems. Obesity causes excessive panting because your dog is working harder to do everyday activities, which means exerting more energy and increasing their heart rate. It's important to feed your dog a well-balanced diet and exercise them daily. You can usually tell if your pet has gained a little weight, but many pet owners don't know how much their dogs should weigh. If you're not sure how much your pet should weigh, you can consult a vet who can help you find the right diet for your pet and help you maintain or lose their weight. Pain Dogs in pain have a higher heart rate, which can lead to faster, heavier breathing and panting at night. Pain can come from internal problems, such as a disease or illness, or external problems, like a hurt paw from jumping off the couch. If you notice your dog is in pain, seek the help of a veterinarian immediately. For example, if your dog is limping and panting, they may require a trip to the emergency vet for a potential sprain or broken bone. Unfortunately, you can't see every injury, but your dog can be in pain whether it's visible or not. Clear indications your dog is in pain is panting accompanied by yelping or avoidance when you try to touch them in a certain area or reluctance to move. For example, if your dog has allergies, your vet might prescribe them allergy medication, while if your pet has anxiety, they might benefit from behavioral training or behavioral medication to help them calm down. If your dog is panting because they're hot, you can cool them down with a wet cloth, offer them cold water or an ice cube, or turn the air conditioning up for a few minutes. For more serious reasons why your dog is panting at night, you should always consult your vet. If your dog is panting due to heart disease or pain, your pet will benefit from medication and treatment. Final Notes Your dog could be panting at night for a variety of reasons. However, it's always best not to panic. Unless your dog has been diagnosed with a medical condition, they're likely panting because they're too warm or they have anxiety. In most cases, you'll be able to rule out whether your dog is panting due to heatstroke or their genetics easily. In other cases, panting at night might be an indicator of a serious physical health condition. When it comes to your dog, remember you know them best. Always use your best judgment to help you determine when it's time to take them to the vet. For example, if your dog pants excessively every night and your home isn't warm, a vet might be able to tell you if they're suffering from a serious physicalmedical condition. Luckily, you don't have to leave your home to get quality advice from a professional. Dutch offers non-emergency telemedicine for pets that can help you uncover the cause of your dog panting at night. Whether your dog is suffering from anxiety, allergies, or anything else, you can talk to a licensed veterinarian who can help you stop your dog's panting and make them happier and more comfortable. As always, if you're worried about your pet and believe their panting at night is an emergency, take them to the nearest emergency vet as soon as possible. Published on Jun 14, and updated at Apr 05, .In fact, it might seem like they pant too much. Fear not! Why does your German Shepherd pant so much though? Instead, dogs pant to cool off — a process known as thermoregulation. As a large dog with a thick coat, your German Shepherd will have a more difficult time cooling down and will need to pant more. But there are other reasons too. The 8 Likely Causes of German Shepherd Panting Most panting will be your German Shepherd trying to cool down, but there are sometimes other reasons they pant a lot. These include anxiety, being overheated, or just not feeling well. Because they have double coats, it will be easier for your German Shepherd to get hot. Image Credit: Pixabay 2. Heatstroke occurs when your pet has been active in extremely hot temperatures and can happen to any dog breed, but due to their thick coats and large size, German Shepherds are at greater risk. How can you tell if your dog is suffering from heatstroke? Other signs of heatstroke can include lethargy, thick sticky saliva, vomiting, and a bright red tongue. If you notice any of these, take your pet to a cooler, shaded area and give them water. They Just Finished Being Active German Shepherds have a lot of energy; they typically require at least two hours of exercise a day. However, if this panting lasts for a longer amount of time than is normal, you may want to speak to your vet. Likewise, if your dog is panting more even after short bursts of activity, it may be a sign that something is wrong. German Shepherd Excited Panting Maybe your German Shepherd is meeting a new person and is happy to have made a new friend. All that jumping and wriggling counts as activity, and they need to get more oxygen to their muscles. Image Credit: Pixabay 5. If your dog has become stressed, it may be panting more than usual. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to figure out what is making your pup anxious. Other times they could be reacting to your emotions. Fear can also cause more panting. While they may end up with digestive issues or reddened skin because of them, your German Shepherd may also start panting in a wheezing manner. Their allergies range from dietary-related, pollen-related, laundry detergents, and dust. Other signs of a reaction include itchiness and paw chewing. One sign of pain in German Shepherds can be panting without the catalyst of exercise or excitement. If you notice this along with other signs of potential illness, get them to a vet right away. Heart disease can manifest symptoms such as the onset of excessive panting. Other signs of heart problems include a swollen belly, loss of appetite, and paler gums than usual. German Shepherd Normal vs. Abnormal Panting Since German Shepherds do pant more than other breeds, how can you tell whether yours is panting an average amount or not? If your dog has been running about or has been outside in the heat, short amounts of panting are normal. Other signs to look for to tell whether your pet is alright are the temperature panting more in hot weather is expected , lethargy, extreme thirst, and hair loss. Image Credit: aleksandra85foto, Pixabay What To Do About Panting Panting is a part of dog life, especially in our German Shepherd friends, but there are some things that can reduce the amount of panting they do. Another good way to help your pup stay cool is by removing their undercoat with a deshedding brush. This technique is particularly beneficial during the summer months. If it seems this is the case, try offering them some comfort. By giving them your company and some good pets, you may distract them from whatever is bothering them, helping their breathing return to normal. This can help you figure out if it is indeed a reaction and whether you need to go to the vet. Other common causes can be excitement, fear, anxiety, heatstroke, heart problems, or illness in general. The main thing you should know is how to differentiate between normal and abnormal amounts of panting by examining their recent activity and surroundings. Featured Image Credit: Pixabay. It is typical behavior for a dog to pant. However, you may wonder why it occurs or whether their panting is excessive or unusual. Believe it or not, there are several reasons and they just might surprise you. What Is Panting in Dogs? Moderate to rapid open-mouthed respiration is a normal dog and puppy behavior that lowers body temperature and also gets oxygen into the dog's bloodstream. A panting dog will breathe with its mouth open and tongue somewhat protruding. Panting as a cooling mechanism is necessary because dogs do not have an effective system of sweat glands like people do. Instead, dogs cool their bodies using the evaporation of moisture from the mouth and tongue and exchange the hot air of their lungs with cooler external air. Panting should not be confused with labored breathing. Labored breathing is characterized by strained respiration and may be accompanied by sounds of distress like crying or whining, or whistles from the nostrils or windpipe due to blockage. Common Reasons for Panting Your dog or puppy may be panting for one of these five reasons. To Cool Off Even if they are not overheating, dogs will pant from exercise. It's much like the way humans breathe heavily when doing aerobic exercise. However, panting is also the primary way for dogs to cool themselves off because they don't sweat the way humans do. Though dogs do sweat a little bit from their paw pads, this cannot sufficiently cool them off. Instead, dogs cool themselves through their mouths. Panting allows dogs to release heat and exchange it for cooler air. As you may imagine, this is not a very efficient process. It's even less efficient for short-faced dogs like bulldogs or pugs. That's why dogs start to pant even when they get even a little bit warm. The hotter a dog becomes, the more intense the panting becomes. Sometimes, heavy panting is accompanied by drooling and redness of the tongue and gums. Along with profound panting, warning signs of overheating include a bright red tongue and gums, wide eyes, weakness, and an elongated appearance of the tongue. Take steps to prevent overheating by keeping your dog cool and minimizing exposure to heat. Always take careful steps to keep your dog safe in hot weather. Never leave a dog alone in a car as cars can quickly get much hotter than the outside temperature. When in doubt, take your dog to the vet for medical attention. Hot puppies may also resort to digging to scoop out cool places to rest. Excitement or Stress Panting may have nothing to do with body temperature. Many dogs will pant when they experience fear, anxiety, or stress. Examples include car rides, fireworks, separation anxiety, vet visits, and other stressful events. Look at your dog's body language to help you determine if your dog is showing signs of fear or any other type of distress. Understanding the cause of fear or anxiety in your dog can help you minimize these incidents. If panting seems to be related to fear, anxiety, or stress, it's best to remove your dog from the situation as soon as you can. If so, the rest of your dog's body language will reflect this happy mood. The tail will usually be wagging in a happy way. Your dog's body and facial features will be somewhat relaxed. The eyes will appear bright and happy. Once things calm down, the panting will slow down and eventually stop. Continued mild panting with an open mouth and bright eyes is normal in a relaxed, content dog. In fact, many people consider this to be a doggie smile. Pain or Discomfort Dogs are pretty good at hiding pain and illness from humans. Some dogs try harder than others to hide their discomfort. However, once they reach a certain level of discomfort, they often cannot help but show signs, such as panting. Look for other signs of illness or pain, such as vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, limping, pacing, and behavior changes. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect that your dog is sick or injured. Physical Problems These are just a few of the possible reasons why your dog may be panting: Dogs with a high fever may pant to help lower their body temperature. Medications given by the veterinarian may increase respiration or prompt panting. A very full stomach or bloat may also cause your dog to pant, sometimes in preparation for vomiting. This can be an emergency and your pet should be evaluated immediately if they are vomiting or dry heaving. Cushing's disease, a condition caused by excessive production of the stress hormone cortisol, can cause excessive panting. This condition is more common in older medium to large breed dogs such as Labrador retrievers. The panting is often accompanied by a high-pitched wheezing noise known as stridor. If you suspect your pet is sick, call your vet immediately. For health-related questions, always consult your veterinarian, as they have examined your pet, know the pet's health history, and can make the best recommendations for your pet. Hear From Us Again. Finally Why Do Dogs Pant? It is established that German Shepherds pant a lot, mostly due to their size. Size is not the only factor as to why German Shepherds pant, as panting is something all dogs do to cool down. Panting is a natural, normal behavior in dogs that they instinctively use to control their body temperature, in response to the climate. Equally, dogs are not able to sweat through their skin. They do not have the efficient arrangement of sweat glands like we do as humans. Instead, canines cool down using the evaporation of moisture coming from their mouths, tongues, paws and nose. Panting helps dogs to exchange the warm air of their lungs for colder external air. With such few outlets to sweat, a dog can get very hot very fast. So, by quickly drawing in breaths of fresh air, they are able to stay cooler. Excessive panting can be a worry for many dog owners, but bear in mind; panting is not labored breathing. Labored breathing is often described as difficult respiration and is usually accompanied by distressing sounds like whining, crying, or whistling due to a blockage in the windpipe or the nostrils. As previously mentioned, German Shepherds are known to pant more than most other breeds of dog. This is for two main reasons. For one, the German Shepherd has a thick double coat that can be heavy and that naturally insulates heat. To help reduce the buildup of heat, panting is used to compensate. Secondly, German Shepherds are a relatively large breed of dog. They therefore have a higher energy level than most other breeds. Equally, because German Shepherds enjoy running, they can easily overheat — especially compared to dogs that are a lot more docile and calm. There are, however, several other factors that can make your Shepherd pant more than usual. Some of these factors are troubling, but there is usually something you can do about it. Some are to be expected whereas others are a little more serious. Your German Shepherd Has Just Exercised It is usual for German Shepherds to pant a lot after exercising or a period of activity; this provides more oxygen to their muscles. Of course, if your dog is panting for longer than expected, even after a sufficient period of time has passed since activity, it may be a good idea to speak to your vet. Equally, if you notice that even a small amount or moderate amount of exercise causes excessive panting, then this could indicate a potential problem. German Shepherds are sensitive to people and situations. These dogs can easily become frightened by loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks, or can even be afraid of a certain person. They can also suffer from seperation anxiety when left alone for too long. In each of these situations above, your dog may suffer from excessive panting. As an owner you should monitor your dog in new environments and try to become familiar with their behavior in different contexts. This way you can identify whether certain situations are causing panting to arise and can then make suitable adjustments to help prevent the panting or support your dog during this time. Your German Shepherd Has Heatstroke Heatstroke is another common reason that a dog might pant more than usual. Heatstroke Is often caused by a dog doing too much activity outdoors when it is hot. Of course, a German Shepherd is a likely candidate for heatstroke due to their size and coat mentioned above. If you notice your Shepherd panting for an extended period after having been out in the heat, give him water to drink and place him in a shaded area straight away. If your dog has heatstroke, you should take them to see a vet once they have cooled down. Your German Shepherd Has Heart Problems If your German Shepherd has begun panting more than usual, then their is the possibility that they are suffering from a health issue. Usually, if this is the case it is a heart problem. German Shepherds are big dogs with powerful physiques, so you will hear them pant as a means of regulating their body temperature. Shepherds have double coats, which keeps them feeling hotter for longer. Loud and sudden sounds frighten the most nonchalant of us, so it hardly surprising that a German Shepherd would become frightened, causing them to pant. Fear will cause your German Shepherd to pant; this is normal. You should be concerned if the panting is sudden, deeper, and more extended than usual, particularly if your dog has no reason to pant. Here are some other things to look out for an when your dogs panting is more of a cause for concern: The temperature is cold — especially if your German Shepherd has not expended much energy. Excessive thirst and urination — coupled with panting means that your dog is not holding onto enough water. Panting is usually nothing to worry about, but it still indicates your dog is attempting to regulate their body temperature. It usually means that they are too hot, and their trying to cool down. The following are practical ways that you can support your dog and help them feel more comfortable during bouts of panting. Always make sure that they can do this on their own accord and never leave them outside in the heat of the day without the ability to cool off. Be cognizant of any steep hills or challenging landscapes too. This works particularly well if they are already very hot, and are in need of a wash anyway! Comfort Your Dog If your dog is panting heavily even if it is not hot or they are not exercising, it could be a sign that they are anxious, are in pain, or even stressed. In this situation, spend some time calming your dog. Give them a good stroke and divert their attention away from what ever is causing issues. Usually, their breathing will quickly return to a normal pace. Investigate The Environment, Monitor Meals Panting can be a sign that your dog has consumed something they do not agree with. Equally, they may have rubbed against something they are allergic to. Check all the foods in which you dog has eaten, and check up on areas your dog has been to ensure there is not something that has caused the panting. German Shepherds need at least one hour of exercise each day, to keep him fit, healthy, and to reduce panting. This is particularly effective in the summer months, or when you may be looking to increase their activity on a walking holiday for example. You can do this by using a de-shedding brush. The FURminator is one of the best brushes out there on the market. You can get it for a great price on Amazon and many German Shepherd owners swear by it. There are many videos available online demonstrating how to use the de-shedding brush correctly. Finally It is usual for German Shepherds to pant and even more so than other breeds. For the most part it does mean that your dog is hot and is attempting to cool down. As an owner, you need to remember that your German Shepherd has a thick double coat and they are a large breed of dog. Never make them overexert themselves or push them beyond their natural capacities. Equally, panting is not a sound that anyone particularly enjoys, but it is natural in dogs and this breed. It is never something you should look to stop. By putting a muzzle on your dog or yelling at them to stop, you will stress them out and cause further issues with overheating. Thankfully though, there are other things you can do to make your German Shepherd feel more comfortable and reduce their need to panting. If these things do not work, or you notice anything abnormal, its advised to take your dog for an examination at the vet. Excessive panting can mean something more serious — so you should be vigilant and better safe than sorry. Related guides you may want to read: Jeremy I am a practiced pet owner with decades of experience owning a number of different pets. Other reasons include excitement, exhaustion, anxiety, reacting to unfamiliar events, or underlying health issues. Although heavy breathing can be a worrying thing to see, there are actually many normal causes for it. Panting is the primary way that all dogs cool themself down aside from sweating through their paws. The vast majority of panting can be explained by one of the causes above. If anything is causing your German Shepherd to be stressed either temporarily or chronically then excessive panting might be something you see on a daily basis. Many things can cause your GSD to be stressed or anxious, from being left alone too long, insufficient stimulation , and even in response to your personal feelings and emotions on any given day. Fortunately, it comes with additional signs to look out for aside from excessive panting. You may notice your GSD to have a bright red tongue, very thick or sticky saliva, weakness, and difficulty moving, lethargy, and may experience diarrhea or vomiting. If you notice any of these symptoms along with panting in hot weather, call your veterinarian as soon as you can, and in the meantime encourage him to drink water. Allergies German Shepherds can suffer from a range of allergies that can cause panting. Allergies can be dietary and food-related or they could be from allergens such as pollen, dust, mites, certain fabric conditioners, washing powders, or even perfumes. If your German Shepherd has any known allergies this could very well be the cause. So how do you know if something is wrong? These are important questions you are likely asking. But please take your time to consider the situation and recent events before calling your veterinarian. Consider the many situations when panting can be expected as outlined near the top and think about the recent events leading up to when you noticed the panting. Another common question is when it comes to puppies. This leads to a lot of ups and downs with their panting volume. And even this, under the right circumstances, would be considered fast, but still normal. Thank you for reading! March 13, at pm Charlotte- I just read your comment and as the previous owner of a little tiny Yorkie, I wanted to reach out to you. This is a real disorder, its not really common but I think there are things you can do to help prevent it. I only know about it because I recently realized my current terrier mix has started suffering from choking issues, but only when he drinks water- I noticed it has become an issue now that he has put on more weight. Every time he went to get a drink he would begin coughing and hacking after. It became so irritating that he actually avoided having to take a drink. Well I regret it. I should have brought her for a second opinion. Long story short she developed Kidney failure and I had to do a lot to keep her alive and keep her hydrated- it was extremely hard! She ended up passing away of a seizure during sunset Memorial Day .But I read that untreated Cushings and untreated high blood pressure will lead to kidneys failing. So it takes a HUGE toll on their little tiny bodies. She went from eating like a normal picky eating Yorkie, to suddenly begging for food ALL the time. She was ravenous! However, there are a number of things that will cause them to pant more than usual. Some of them will be a cause for concern and others will be less troubling. It is too hot The most likely reason that it pants a lot is because it is too hot. Add in the fact that German Shepherds have double coats and it becomes easy to see that they will get hot very easily. When dogs get hot they will naturally pant more than usual as a way to cool off. It has heatstroke Another reason that a dog might pant more than usual is that it has heatstroke. This would be caused by doing too much activity, outside, while it is hot. If you notice that your German Shepherd continues to pant after having been out in the heat for some time it would help to give it access to water and to give it access to a cool and shaded area immediately. If it does seem to have heatstroke then it would be important to take it to a vet as soon as you have helped it cool down. Fear German Shepherds may also start to pant a lot more than usual when they are frightened. This could be due to thunderstorms, a low flying jet, fireworks or it could be because you started to seem frightened yourself. It could also be the case that it is fearful of a certain person. This would be more likely if it only starts to pant more when that particular person is around. It might also be the case that it has some separation anxiety. This would be more likely if it only seems to pant more when you are about to leave. Related post: Why is my German Shepherd afraid? It has a heart-problem The reason that it has been panting more than usual could be that it has a heart problem or some other serious issue. If you think that this is the reason then it would likely be worthwhile for you to take your German Shepherd to the vet. Allergic reaction to something The cause of the panting could be that it has had an allergic reaction to something or it has been poisoned. Again, in this case, you should consider taking your German Shepherd to the vet to get it checked out. Exercise German Shepherds will begin to pant more than usual right after they have done exercise. This will be because they need to supply their muscles with more oxygen. Panting more than usual right after it has done exercise is a normal time for a German Shepherd to be panting unless it does it excessively for a long time. Related post: Ways to exercise your German Shepherd. Excitement German Shepherds may also start to pant a lot when they are excited. This is because they will become more active and because they will be supplying their muscles with more oxygen in anticipation. Again, panting more than usual when it is excited is a normal time for a dog to start panting a lot. When panting a lot is normal If your German Shepherd has been panting a lot then it may be quite concerning for you. Below, I will mention some instances where panting more than usual would be normal for a German Shepherd. It is hot If it pants more than usual when it is hot outside then this would be a normal time for a German Shepherd to pant a lot. However, if it has been out in the sun for a long time and it has started panting a lot more than usual then this would be a sign of heatstroke and you should cool it down and take it to a vet. It has just been running Another time where it is normal for a German Shepherd to pant more is right after it has been doing exercise. It is excited German Shepherds and most other dogs will pant more when they are excited and this should not be a cause for concern on its own. It is acting normally otherwise If your German Shepherd has not started to act differently suddenly then that would also be a sign that the panting is normal. However, if it is acting normally, it could still be the case that there is something wrong. This would be more likely if it does it in the scenarios that will be mentioned below. How to tell if it is abnormal While there are many instanced where panting a lot is normal, it can also be a sign that there is something wrong. Below, I will mention some signs that the panting is due to something abnormal. For example, if it does not usually pant so much but, in recent days, it has been panting a lot constantly even when in a cool, calm and shaded environment then it would be a cause for concern. It pants when you are about to leave If you notice that it only starts to pant more than usual when you are about to leave then this would suggest that it has some separation anxiety. In this case, you may want to get the help of a certified dog expert in your area. The panting is constant and intense It is normal for a German Shepherd to pant more than most dogs. However, if you notice that your German Shepherd pants intensely constantly then it would be a cause for concern and a reason to get it checked out. Again, in this case, you should get your German Shepherd looked at by a vet. It is behaving abnormally Another cause for concern would be if it has been panting more than usual and it has been acting weird. This would be a sign that it is sick or injured in some way and another reason to get it checked out by a vet. Things you can do There are a number of things that you can do to reduce how excessively your German Shepherd has been panting that I will mention below. Go to a vet if you think that the panting is abnormal The first thing that you should do is to get it checked out by a vet if you think that the panting is abnormal or if there are any signs of the panting being abnormal such as those mentioned above. Remove its undercoat Often, the cause of the panting will be because your German Shepherd is too hot. To reduce the panting, in this case, it would help to get help it to stay cool. One way to do this would be to de-shed your German Shepherd using a de-shedding brush. You can do this by following how it is done in the video below. Give it access to shade and cool areas Another way to help your German Shepherd pant less and to cool down would be to give it access to shaded areas. You can do this by letting it come inside when it wants to and by making there be more shaded areas in your garden. Give it access to water Another way to help cool your German Shepherd down would be to give it access to water. By doing this you will help your German Shepherd be able to stay hydrated and to reduce the likelihood of it getting heatstroke. Give it exercise on a daily basis Giving your German Shepherd exercise on a daily basis will help to keep your German Shepherd healthy and to reduce how much it pants when it is not doing exercise. Generally, it is recommended that you give your German Shepherd at least an hour of exercise per day. This is because German Shepherds are working dogs that are designed to be very active. Giving your German Shepherd can also prevent other problems such as aggression or destructive behavior. There are many ways that you can give your German Shepherd exercise. One way would be to just walk it for an hour per day normally. If you live in a hot area then try to do it in the morning or evening when it is cooler and there is less sunlight. Another way to give your German Shepherd a lot of efficient exercise would be to play fetch with it. By doing this you will be able to get it to do a lot of running which will wear it out quickly. If you are not able to give your German Shepherd exercise daily yourself then consider paying a dog walker to do it for you. This would be more likely to be the reason if the room that it sleeps in is normally quite hot. In this case, it would help to let it sleep in a cooler room or to try to cool the room down itself. It has just been active If your German Shepherd tends to get exercise in the evening or it tends to become very active in the evening then it would be likely to be the cause of the panting. In this case, it would not be an issue to be concerned with. Anxiety The reason why it has been panting a lot at night could be that it is anxious. This would be more likely if it started doing it when something happened that might make it anxious or if there is something in its environment that could make it anxious. It could be that someone mistreated it, there tends to be loud noises such as wind or sirens or that it has recently moved homes and it is unsure of its environment. It is dreaming If it pants a lot during its sleep then it could be because it is dreaming. This would be more likely if it does not pant a lot constantly when sleeping and it only lasts as long as a dream would typically last. If it does not stop then it could be due to a more serious issue that gets discussed here. Illness or injury The cause of the sudden panting could be that it has an illness or injury. This would be more likely if it started doing it suddenly and it is not just panting more at night. It would also be more likely if it has been showing other signs of being ill or injured such as vomiting, behaving differently or being fatigued. In this case, the best option for you would be to take it to a vet. Age If your German Shepherd is very young then it will naturally pant more. According to Cuteness. Things to consider There are many things that you can consider when trying to figure out why your German Shepherd has been breathing fast at night. If it has always panted more at night It would help to consider whether or not your German Shepherd has always panted more at night or if it has started doing it more suddenly. If it has started panting more at night suddenly then it would make it more likely that it is due to illness, injury, a sudden change in the temperature or that it has been more active in the evenings recently. If it has always seemed to pant more at night then it could be because it is still young, it is its natural breathing speed or it could be that there is a medical issue. In this case, it would help to consult with a vet the next time you take your German Shepherd for a checkup. When it seems to do it more The timing of when it seems to pant more would also be something to consider. If it does not always seem to pant more at night then it could be the case that there is something that has been triggering it. However, I will show you some options that you have below. Take it to a vet If you are unsure of why your German Shepherd has been panting more at night, it is constant and excessive or if your German Shepherd has been behaving abnormally in other ways then it would be very important to take it to a vet and to get it checked out. Give it exercise German Shepherds are meant to be an active breed and they are supposed to get a lot of exercise daily. When they do not get much exercise it can cause them to develop health issues. Generally, it is recommended that a German Shepherd get an hour of exercise per day. If your German Shepherd is not getting that much exercise then it would help to make sure that it does after getting the all-clear from a vet. You can exercise it by walking it, playing fetch with it or getting a dog walker to do it for you. Give it access to a cool area Since it might be panting at night due to being too hot it would help to make sure that it has access to a cool area at night. If the weather is hot where you are it would also be helpful to help remove its undercoat by brushing it with a de-shedding brush. Keep it out of the sun during the day If the weather is hot right now then it would also be important to keep it out of the sun during the day. If it has been panting a lot at night after having been out in the sun for a long time then it could be due to mild heatstroke. If it is hot then it would help to give it exercise in the morning or evening when the sun is not up. It would also help to give it access to shaded and cool areas during the day. They used to call me Spider Mike but I grew out of that as soon as foster Mom helped me learn how to walk. Actually, each week, week after week, was crappy. The same smelly barn. The same stinky bedding. The same boring life. And then it changed. Dusty got released from the commercial breeding farm and life began! He is such a good boy. He is so easy to love. He eats well, sleeps well, and likes to play hard. The more outside time the better. We've only heard him bark a little and that happened when he was outside. He saw a rabbit and could not contain himself. Dusty is quite smitten with other dogs and will play with them as much as they will allow. Dusty had never been on a leash before coming to SPIN and this has been quite scary for him. Actually, it caused him to freeze; not moving an inch. We are learning that he doesn't like to have any tension on the lead. He will walk only when the leash is loose and he can go where he wants. Thankfully he usually wants to follow his people. He is also learning to come on command. At first, he didnt know his name, but he is responding to it quite well now. He continues to be anxious and skittish. Dusty startles quickly, especially if you move your arms or legs quickly or if there are unexpected noises. Slow and steady is what Dusty is comfortable with. He is also easily startled if you drop something. Dusty loves affection. He will walk right up to you to be petted. He loves to be in the same room as his 2 and 4 legged family members. Dusty has taken to his kennel quite nicely. He goes into it on his own when he comes into the bedroom at night. We think he considers it a safe place. Dusty is a very bright boy and catches on quickly to what it is you want him to do if treats are involved. He is such a sweet and beautiful boy.
