There can be various tri-color patterns with colors like black, brown, tan, rust, apricot, red, white, and cream. The dominant base color is usually darker and white markings are found on the face, chest, feet, and paws. Sable Bernedoodle Another popular choice is the sable Bernedoodle color. Like many other Doodles, Bernedoodles often carry the fading gene , which is usually inherited from the Poodle side of their lineage. This typically occurs anywhere from 6 to 10 months of age. The fading, also called clearing, is most noticeable in darker colored Bernedoodles who have blacks and browns in their coat. One puppy could appear to be several colors as its base coat. No two babies are ever the same!!! The phantom merles have those distinct phantom markings that we love so much! On average, these babies will appear to be three or more colors! These babies have large patches of distinct white, not just small spots of white hair mixed in which is common in merles. A little about merles: Standard sized merle bernedoodles are especially hard to find. They are one of the few colors that are auctually harder to find in Standard size than mini. The reason being that standard sized merle standard poodles are difficult to find. The merle color is very uncommon in all poodle sizes. They can usually be readily found in toy and mini sized poodles. The toy poodle is then bred to a standard sized female to create the Moyen or medium sized poodle. This poodle as the mother cannot safely be bred to a bernese mountain dog. She will be far too small. If this moyen poodle is the father, the puppies will be a larger mini or very small standard size. These are not Large standard sized puppies that we are hoping to have. This merle moyen poodle should be bred again to a standard poodle in order to bring as much size as possible to the offspring, and then that puppy could safely breed for standard sized puppies. It takes several generations to safely and correctly breed for True Standard sized babies. It takes many years to create the perfect poodle to make these babies happen! Then you must inseminate the female at the appropriate time of her heat cycle. If the insemination is not done at the proper time or completed properly, then the time, money and resources used for that cycle may go wasted. Some dogs may or may not have a regular heat cycle as well. So knowing when to breed your bulldog can be difficult. Again, we recommend working with your veterinarian to help track heat cycles to determine optimal breeding time. Just getting your bulldog bred may or may not be the most difficult and expensive part of the equation. The large shape of their skulls combined with the confirmation of their pelvis make it difficult and sometimes downright impossible for a baby to fit through the birth canal. This leaves surgery by C-section as the only option for a mama bulldog to have babies. If you have a good relationship with your regular veterinarian, and you know the exact date that your female was bred, you may be able to schedule her ahead of time to have a C-section. However, if there are multiple possible breeding dates for your bulldog, scheduling the surgery too early may result in loss of the puppies. After being born, the puppies will ideally nurse from mom for the first weeks of their lives. If there are complications, this may also add to the cost of puppy care. Not to mention that while pregnant, you want to make sure the female bulldog is healthy, has testing done to determine how many puppies she has, and is up to date on all vaccines and prevention prior to even breeding her. The foetal factor that is most likely to cause dystocia is a large head Johnston et al .The larger the puppy the greater the risk. The English bulldog is a brachycephalic breed. Dogs with brachycephalic airway disease have a shortened and distorted upper airway, narrow nostrils, an elongated soft palate, and an abnormal larynx voice box. Secondary to these airway obstructions, these dogs can develop collapsed airways, especially involving the larynx and trachea. These defects commonly make it difficult for the breed to breathe adequately whilst undertaking normal activity. Stress caused by exercise, excitement, heat or giving birth can exacerbate this and lead to collapse and death. It is likely that a proportion of the large number of caesarean sections carried out on English bulldogs are elective procedures arranged by breeders to avoid any chance of dystocia and the risk of asphyxiation of whelping bitches as might otherwise occur during the normal birth process Harvey .Return to top 2. Intensity of welfare impact Dystocia is a severe welfare problem for the affected bitch and, if untreated, it will usually lead to her death. Treatment of a bitch that is having difficulty giving birth involves transportation of the dog to a veterinary practice for examination and imposes further stressors for a brachycephalic dog with breathing difficulties. Uterine contractions are painful and control of this pain is difficult in the home environment, so any delay in the birth process causes more prolonged and severe pain than usual. Caesarean section is usually required to treat English bulldogs with dystocia. Unplanned, emergency caesarean sections are likely to have a higher welfare impact than either natural birth or elective caesarean, and a higher death rate for the puppies. Caesarean sections are major surgical procedures and anaesthesia presents particular risks to brachycephalic dogs because of their abnormal respiratory tracts and breathing difficulties. However, any advantages that might bring would have to be 'weighed' carefully against the risks associated with allowing all births to progress naturally rather than undertaking elective caesarians to preclude the risk of dystocia. It might be possible to assess the size and shape of the pelvises of prospective mothers, as has been described for Boston and Scottish terriers by Eneroth et al .These authors found that bitches in which the pelvis was larger vertically than horizontally were less likely to suffer from dystocia. Breeding from such dogs, and from those with the greatest pelvic measurements, might be a reasonable approach and may be helpful in reducing the incidence of dystocia. However, this speculative proposal has not been validated and might be hard to undertake in practice. As yet no such scheme is in operation. Given the high proportion of animals that appear to suffer from foetal-pelvic disproportion in this breed, efforts to breed only from a minority judged to have the best chances of giving birth naturally might risk, through diminution of the size of the breeding population, inadvertent selection for other genetic diseases. Selecting for smaller head size in puppies is theoretically possible and, if successful, would probably help in reducing the incidence of dystocia. If you press the gums, the skin should turn white for a second but then return to a healthy pink shortly after. If the area takes a while to return to its normal color, this is another strong indicator of dehydration. One of the most common reasons for dehydration is too much exercise. Frenchies are especially susceptible to this as it takes much less activity to wear them out, especially compared to other breeds. Frenchies need to have small bouts of exercise throughout the day to avoid over-exhaustion, and if you can, it would be worth bringing a small water bottle with you so that they can stay hydrated while out and about, especially during the summer. If you notice that your Frenchie is simply not drinking from their bowl, try giving the dish a thorough clean with soap and water before filling it up with fresh water again. Allergies A dry nose might also indicate that your Frenchie is struggling with an allergic reaction. If an allergy is the cause, you will likely see other symptoms such as: Itchiness, which can be general or localised. Inflamed skin. This condition causes a protein overgrowth and leads to a dry nose that will eventually crust and peel if not cared for properly. At various times throughout the day or even years, a Frenchies nose will become very dry. This does not mean to say that your fury friend is sick. A crusty nose can create a fair bit of discomfort and should be addressed quickly. As with any symptom the first thing you will want to do is get a proper diagnosis from your vet so as to understand the cause and best treatment available because you want to be sure there are no other health problems. When keratin has grown a fair amount, this will cause peeling to occur. It starts to become hard and then flakes off. This can be managed by moisturising your dogs with special ointments or lotions. Allergic reactions include other symptoms like persistent sneezing, itching, hives, watery fluid from the nose, and ear infections. At times you will notice a clear discharge from the nostrils. These allergies can create discomfort for your Frenchie and a Vet may prescribe an allergy medication. In addition, diet also plays an important role in managing their allergies. Therefore, it is very important that you keep a close watch on the colour of the discharge because infection can result. If you notice a yellow or green discharge, then you should consult with your Vet. Environment In the summer, exposure to sun and dry air can cause a Frenchies nose to get crusty or flaky. In Winter, the cold air can also cause a Frenchies nose to dry up. Further, those Frenchies who like to curl up in front of a heater for long periods of time will cause their nose to dry up. Using a good quality lotion can help control this. Dehydration Strenuous exercise or hot temperatures can cause severe dehydration, which then causes a Frenchies nose to dry out. As soon as you notice a dry nose, also make sure to check the gums and get in the routine of monitoring your Frenchies gums. This is particularly important if they lead a very active lifestyle. Properly hydrated gums should be pink and moist to the touch, while gums that are dry, tacky, and pale indicate dehydration. Keep fresh water available at all times and remember dogs should drink water regularly throughout the day.
