In fact, the standard poodle is often bred with other breeds, such as the Labrador retriever, to create a hybrid dog with the poodle's coat characteristics, intelligence and temperament. Big brother to the miniature and toy varieties, the standard poodle is the original. It is the eighth-most-popular dog on the American Kennel Club's list of favorite breeds. The standard poodle makes an excellent family pet. The breed requires regular exercise and regular grooming. Choosing a Standard Poodle Step 1 Visit your library and read up on the standard poodle breed. Compare the standard poodle's activity level -- which is high -- with your own lifestyle. Factor in how much time you will have to exercise and train your dog. Keep in mind that standard poodles can live up to 15 years, according to Dogster. Be prepared to provide a quality home to your poodle for life. Step 2 Find standard poodle owners and breeders through your favorite social media. Ask what they feed, what color they prefer, what gender they tend to favor, and other questions you might have. Ask about particular pedigree lines, health issues or reputable breeders of standard poodles. Step 3 Determine what age of standard poodle you want to bring into your family. If you want a puppy, be prepared to train the dog to help it become the best companion animal he can be. Consider adopting a rescue if you want a more mature animal. Step 4 Review your budget. Determine if you can afford food, health care, training and coat upkeep for a standard poodle. Housing, Feeding, Grooming and Health Step 1 Prepare a safe place for your standard poodle before you bring him home. Make him your regular companion. Take him with you when you go out. Most poodles don't like to be left alone; they love to be with and please their owners, says pet author and poodle owner Janine Adams. Poodles can become destructive if left alone for long hours; exercise and lots of companionship can make the dog happier, advises Dogster. Step 2 Provide a large fenced-in area, or exercise your dog by taking him on walks. Play games of fetch or take him for an off-leash romp in a safe, fenced dog park. Give your poodle games and food toys to stimulate his mind. Poodles are intelligent and highly trainable. Step 3 Feed your poodle a high-quality diet in several small meals during the day. No single commercially prepared food is best, Guidry says. Feed the dog from a raised feeder to prevent bloat, a common and often deadly condition caused by eating too much food too quickly: As the stomach fills with gas, it becomes very painful and can actually twist, a condition requiring immediate medical attention to save the life of your dog. Additionally, withhold water for one-half hour following vigorous exercise to prevent bloat. Like many barrel-chested breeds, standard poodles can bloat easily, the Poodle Club of America warns. Step 4 Groom your standard poodle regularly; if you don't, the dog's coat can become fuzzy, matted and uncomfortable for the dog. Train yourself to bathe, clip and snip the coat every four to eight weeks, Guidry suggests, or take the dog to a groomer. At the basic level, brush your dog several times a week. Step 5 Select the cut that's best for both your poodle's lifestyle and your own. A puppy under 12 months of age may look best in a "Puppy" clip, especially if the dog is to be shown. The puppy clip allows the coat to be left long, while the face, throat, feet and base of the tail are all shaved except for a puff or pompom of hair at the end of the tail. Show your dog over 12 months of age with an "English Saddle" clip. This clip is similar to the "Puppy" clip, but puffs of hair are left on the forelegs. Another show option is the "Continental" clip, which is an elegant clip that highlights bracelets of hair on the hind legs and puffs of hair on the forelegs. The rest of the body is shaped to improve the overall look. A "Sporting" clip calls for shaving the face, face, feet, throat and base of the tail, and leaving a cap of hair on the top of the poodle's head. The rest of the body and legs are cut to leave a short coat, no longer than 1 inch long. There are numerous "pet" cuts that an experienced groomer should be able to provide for dogs that won't be shown. Step 6 Make regular appointments with your veterinarian for routine examinations and vaccinations. Keep close watch for runny eyes and ear infections. The poodle is generally a healthy breed; however, poodles are prone to hypothyroidism; Addison's and Cushing's diseases; hepatitis and epilepsy; hip dysplasia; and several other breed-specific genetic issues, according to the Poodle Club of America. Go to source They're excellent hunters, trackers, trick-dogs, and even excellent watchdogs that will alert you whenever there's an intruder or something amiss in the household. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. There are many kinds of wet and dry dog food on the market, with prices and flavors varying across a diverse spectrum. Don't get overwhelmed by the variety, though. Avoid foods with a grain or other filler listed as the top ingredient. There are many recipes for homemade dog food, but all of them should have 3 fundamental ingredients: meat, vegetables, and a filler carbohydrate such as rice. For example, keep your poodle away from raw meat, dried fruit, fried foods, and allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic. There are 3 sizes of poodles: standard, which weigh between 40 and 55 pounds 18 and 25 kg , miniature, weighing between 12 and 15 pounds 5. The size of your poodle determines how much food you should give it, so make sure to follow recommended guidelines in order to avoid weight-related problems in the future. That being said, there are some rough guidelines you can use if such information is temporarily unavailable. Keeping your dog hydrated is essential to good health and nutrition: water lubricates and facilitates practically every function in your dog's body, including joint cushioning, temperature maintenance, and digestion. If you use wet food, your dog can get quite a lot of its daily hydration requirements from its food, but you should still provide a large bowl of clean water at all times. Although many of these devices were created for cats who are attracted to running water, they perform multiple functions which are also beneficial to dogs, such as inhibiting bacteria growth and filtering out carbon. You've probably seen images of show poodles displaying what looks like a wacky, poofy grooming style. While you don't need to mimic this look in your pet's style, you still need to follow a fairly strict grooming regimen in order to keep your poodle's coat from matting. In addition to weekly brushing at home, you should get your poodle professionally groomed and trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. You should brush your poodle's teeth daily with a vet-approved canine toothpaste and toothbrush. If you've adopted an adult poodle who hasn't had prior daily dental care, get a professional cleaning done before beginning your daily regimen. This is especially important for toy and miniature poodles, as they tend to have more problems with receding gums. Just be sure to select a rawhide variety which contains no added flavor and is made in the U. Poodles don't need as much exercise as some other energetic breeds, but you should still strive to walk them at least twice a day for no less than 20 minutes per walk. Go to source This is particularly important for standard poodles, as they are the largest sized poodle and the most active. Toy and miniature poodles require less physical activity, but you should still make sure they get enough exercise to maintain a healthy cardiovascular and digestive system. A standard poodle can develop superior endurance and speed—some people have even trained for marathons with this boisterous breed! But, you should amp up activity gradually in order to avoid overheating. Scan your fences carefully for any holes or weaknesses before letting your dog run around, and don't let your dog be outside when you're not home to supervise. Poodles were originally bred in Germany to be trackers and water retrievers, so they have innately excellent senses of smell and intelligence. Field events, hunting, tracking, and agility exercises are all excellent options which let the poodle use these natural skill sets and interests while keeping it mentally engaged and physically active. Tracking training involves getting the dog to follow a tracklayer's scent over an extended distance, navigate obstacles in the terrain, and find and retrieve an object such as a glove or hat carrying the tracklayer's scent. If you're not familiar with the procedure, you can get help with this kind of training through local poodle organizations, obedience classes, or American Kennel Club chapters. Poodles are loving, giving dogs, but this also means they need tons of attention in return. They prefer to be with you at all times, so include your dog in anything you can. For example, take it with you to your kids' baseball game, out on your morning jog, and to your friends' barbecue. Otherwise your poodle will act out and keep its mind occupied through other, often destructive behaviors, such as chewing on furniture or shoes. She is a joyful and clever companion that enjoys being the center of attention. The Standard Poodle is one of three Poodle varieties, all of which share the same breed standard and differ only in size. Poodles originated in Germany and were bred to hunt waterfowl. Poodles are quick to learn and have comical personalities; the Standard Poodle tends to be calmer than the two smaller varieties. Standard Poodles are obedient, lively, and loyal family companions. The Standard Poodle is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Poodle. By knowing about health concerns specific to Standard Poodles, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in Standard Poodles to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Standard Poodles. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Poodle looking and feeling her best. Unfortunately, your Standard Poodle is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. Dental disease starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections Standard Poodles are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on her age, the diseases we see in our area, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Standard Poodles. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain, and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Poodle is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions against common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Standard Poodles Bloat Gastric dilatation volvulus, also known as GDV or bloat, usually occurs in dogs with deep, narrow chests. This means your Poodle is more at risk than other breeds. When a dog bloats, the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. The twisting cuts off the blood supply to the stomach and sometimes to the spleen. Left untreated, the disease is quickly fatal, sometimes in as little as half an hour. Your dog may retch or heave but little or nothing comes up , act restless, have an enlarged abdomen, or lie in a prayer position front feet down, rear end up. Preventive surgery in which the stomach is tacked down or sutured in place so that it is unlikely to twist is an option. If you see symptoms, take your pet to an emergency hospital immediately! Heart Disease Standard Poodles are especially prone to a life-threatening heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, in which the heart becomes so large, thin, and weak that it can no longer effectively pump blood to the body. As this problem advances, he may act weak or tired, faint or collapse, breathe in a labored way, or cough. Unfortunately, Standard Poodles can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs for concern. Glaucoma, an eye condition that affects Standard Poodles and people too, is an extremely painful disease that rapidly leads to blindness if left untreated. Symptoms include squinting, watery eyes, bluing of the cornea the clear front part of the eye , and redness in the whites of the eyes. Pain is rarely noticed by pet owners though it is frequently there and can be severe. People who have certain types of glaucoma often report it feels like being stabbed in the eye with an ice pick! Glaucoma is a medical emergency. Cataracts are a common cause of blindness in older Poodles. Many dogs adjust well to losing their vision and get along just fine. Surgery to remove cataracts and restore sight may also be an option. Left untreated, hypoadrenocorticism can be fatal. Symptoms often mimic many other diseases, but we can run a specialized blood test to check for this specific condition. Though this disease can occur in any type of dog, Poodles are more at risk. This is a common problem in dogs, and your Poodle is more likely than other dogs to be affected. The condition usually develops slowly, and the early signs are easily missed. Symptoms include drinking and urinating more than normal, increased appetite, and reduced activity level followed later by a potbelly, thin skin, and hair loss. Treatment usually includes oral medications and requires close coordination with us to ensure correct dosing. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders that occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. Standard Poodles are particularly prone to some relatively rare diseases of the blood. If the immune system destroys red blood cells, your dog quickly becomes anemic, weak, and lethargic. His gums will look whitish or yellow instead of a normal bright pink color. Sometimes an emergency transfusion of red blood cells or platelets is needed. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Standard Poodles. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. This is called patellar luxation. You might notice that your pet, while running, suddenly picks up a back leg or skips and hops for a few strides. He might then kick his leg out sideways to pop the kneecap back in place. These are common signs of patellar luxation. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from luxating further. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is also sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. And keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Epilepsy There are three types of seizures in dogs: reactive, secondary, and primary. Secondary seizures are the result of a brain tumor, stroke, or trauma. If no other cause can be found, the disease is called primary or idiopathic epilepsy. This problem is often an inherited condition, and Standard Poodles are commonly afflicted. If your friend is prone to seizures, episodes will usually begin between six months and three years of age. An initial diagnostic workup may help find the cause. Lifelong medication is usually necessary to help keep seizures under control with periodic blood testing required to monitor side effects and efficacy. Note the length of the seizure, and call us or an emergency hospital. Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a fairly common disease in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but Poodles have an above average incidence. Dogs with diabetes are unable to regulate the metabolism of sugars in their bodies and require daily insulin injections. Diabetes is a serious condition and one that is important to diagnose and treat as early as possible. Symptoms include increased eating, drinking, and urination, along with weight loss. If he shows signs, we will conduct lab tests to determine if he has this condition and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment requires a serious commitment of time and resources. Well-regulated diabetic dogs today have the same life expectancy as other canines. Allergies In humans, allergies to pollen, mold, or dust make people sneeze. In dogs, rather than sneezing, allergies make their skin itchy. The feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most commonly affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs or allergies. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for these conditions. Skin Conditions Poodles are prone to a variety of skin problems, including sebaceous adenitis. You may notice that your dog has dry, scaly skin with patches of hair loss along the top of his head, back of the neck, and along his back. This condition typically develops when your dog is between one and five years of age. The earlier the skin is checked out, the better the results. Early detection leads to a happier pet and an easier, more affordable treatment plan. We may also recommend a special diet as part of his therapy. Cancer Cancer is a leading cause of death in older dogs. Your Poodle will likely live longer than many other breeds and therefore is more prone to get cancer in his golden years. Many cancers are curable by surgical removal, and some types are treatable with chemotherapy. Early detection is critical! Dental Abnormalities Teeth abnormalities are often genetically induced and are relatively common in dogs, especially in purebred dogs like your Poodle. An overbite or underbite is called a malocclusion or a bad bite. Oligodontia is a condition in which only a few teeth are present. Misaligned teeth can also occur and cause lots of problems, but can usually be corrected with braces or extractions. Yes, dogs can get braces! Signs can include dry skin and coat, hair loss, susceptibility to other skin diseases, weight gain, fearfulness, aggression, and other behavioral changes. Treatment is usually as simple as replacement hormones given in the form of a pill. Taking Care of Your Standard Poodle at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Poodle live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. Regular brushing and grooming is needed to keep her coat beautiful. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. She loves the water, and swimming is a great form of exercise for your Standard Poodle! She is an athletic dog that excels at dog sports like obedience, agility, and even hunting. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Standard Poodle needs help. Proper care for the Poodle will involve many aspects that will all work in combination to maintain excellent health and promote learning and good behavioral habits. It is important to establish a foundation of proper care during the puppy stage that will carry over throughout the Poodle's life. We will discuss: The items that you should have to care for a Poodle puppy Details on the 5 most important tips for proper care - Feeding, house training, offering the right amount of exercise, grooming and how to offer a healthy environment. Toy Poodles and Mini's will be puppies for the 1st year; standards mature at a somewhat slower rate and are considered to be puppies until the age of 2 years old. During this time, much care is needed for both physical growth and mental development. Bringing your new Poodle home is not as simple as just picking up your new family member from the breeder. Good care involves planning ahead. It helps to have all needed items well in advance so that you can focus on the puppy without having to rush out for a needed supply items. One of the most important elements to be aware of is that no matter what the puppy has been fed since he or she began eating solid food, you should have the exact same brand on hand. Quickly switching foods can cause upset stomach and other issues…and in the case of a puppy it can be the cause of hypoglycemia. A slow change must be made. If you opt to go with a different brand or to home cook, have enough of the 'old' food on hand for several weeks, as well as the 'new' so that that you can make gradual changeover. A quality dog bed — A new puppy will feel stress going to even the best of new homes. This is why making sure that you have a nice, soft, comfortable dog bed is important. You should show your Poodle that this is the area in which he can rest, sleep or just get away from noise when things seem to overwhelming. If you will be leaving your puppy home alone during the day, it is best to have the bed placed in the area where he will be staying. A gated off section of a room or inside a canine playpen works well. The entrance to this can be left open when you are home with your puppy can of course, closed off when you are away. In this way, the puppy will become accustomed to the area. If you will be home with your puppy, place this in the corner of room that is frequently used but not chaotic. Dogs like to have their own quiet spot, but not feel isolated. Walking and ID accessories — Along with a retractable leash and a collar for ID purposes, it is highly recommended to have a harness for your puppy. Toy Poodles no matter what the age and all Mini and Standard puppies should have on a harness and not a collar when they are on a leash. When a leash is connected to a dog collar, this can create too much tension on the neck, which can cause collapsed trachea. The trachea windpipe is protected by rings of cartilage…when this happens, those rings collapse in, causing pain and breathing problems. These can be purchased at a pet supply store and come in many unique and interesting designs so that your Poodle always looks stylish. If you are not sure which harness would be best for your Poodle puppy, you may wish to look to both 'Accessories' and 'Clothing- Harness' in the Poodle Specialty Shoppe. A Car Safety Seat - Long ago cars did not even have seat belts for humans. But now, of course, we all know how many lives they save. The very same is true for dogs. Even if you are a conscientious driver, you cannot be in control of those who are driving near you. Be sure to secure your Poodle into a canine car safety seat. All it takes is 1 second of you having to quickly brake for your Poodle to go sliding off of the seat, completely unprotected. These are also great for dogs that are prone to car sickness. A raised booster seat will assist a puppy in being able to look out of the window which reduces motion sickness. However, choosing high quality toys that can stand up to continual chewing and hold a puppy's interest is better. Puppies are full of energy and filled with curiosity; having a good supply of toys at all times will be very helpful. Puppies that are in the teething phase will be experiencing discomfort and teething toys will help to sooth sore gums and offer a chewing outlet See also: Poodle teething Grooming Supplies - Poodle care certainly involves proper grooming. This includes nails, dewclaws, bathes, drying, wrapping, trimming, clipping and topknots. See also: Bathing a Poodle Clothes - Particularly for tiny toy Poodles, protection against the elements should be implemented as needed. During cold, icy winters the use of canine shoes or paw wax helps protect paw pads from ice melt chemicals and aids with traction. A sweater or cute vest can keep a small Poodle puppy from becoming chilled. During hot months, shoes help protect sensitive paws from hot surfaces. Bowls - Plastic bowls often contain heavy dyes that can cause staining on a Poodle's coat. In addition, tiny scratches that easily develop in plastic bowls can also harbor dangerous bacteria. It is best to use stainless steel or ceramic bowls for both food and water. Dishes should shallow so that a puppy can easily reach both food and water without bumping their heads or straining to reach. Toys and Mini's may like raised bowls. However, Standards - who are prone to bloat- should only eat and drink from bowls that are at floor level. Free feed until 3 months old leaving food out at all times and then give your puppy 3 meals per day plus healthy snacks. Please choose your food wisely; cheaper foods with fillers will not offer the proper nutrition needed to aid with the rapid growth that is associated with the puppy phase. You will find that if you reserve snacks and treats as rewards for training, housebreaking and command training will go smoother. Read more: Feeding a Poodle 2- Start house training right away, keeping in mind that it is your commitment to the process that will bring about success. Generally, housebreaking takes 2 to 3 months. If your Poodle puppy will be expected to use an outdoor area, do not focus too much on indoor training when the pup is home along, since it is difficult for puppies to learn 2 different methods. Do keep in mind that young puppies should not be over-exercised since it can interfere with growth plate development; however a daily 20 to 30 minute per walk is perfect. Walks allow a puppy to release pent up energy, it expands their view of the world and is a good staring point for socialization techniques and learning proper heeling. Poodles are generally very active dogs. Aside from a walk each day, this breed loves to run , jump and show off their agility capabilities. Playing catch, Frisbee or training your Poodle to jump through hoops will keep them in good health, both physically and mentally. See also: Poodle Exercise Requirements 4- Begin a routine of grooming and care. While many puppies will balk at the idea of being brushed or having teeth cleaned, doing these tasks on a regular basis allows a puppy to become accustomed to being touched and taken care of. Taking care of the teeth during the puppy stage is important since dental hygiene will affect the adult teeth that have not yet erupted. Read more: Poodle dental care 5- Limit stress, focus on fun. One of the most important elements of Poodle care is to offer a loving, safe environment. Puppies and dogs are sensitive to their owner's moods and the atmosphere of the house in general. Puppies can become easily stressed in noisy, chaotic homes. Puppies should be given a designated area to retreat and rest if feeling overwhelmed. Often, a gated off area that is secured when a pup is home alone, but the entrance is open when owners are home works best. Speak to your pup in a pleasant voice and remember that positive reinforcement for good behavior works much better than scolding for bad behavior. Take time to puppy proof the home, clearing the floors of any small items and stowing away shoes and other objects to higher ground. This should be done before bringing a puppy home but also on a regular basis. For example, a black Standard Poodle might have white markings, or a red Standard Poodle could have black accents. These could be in the form of: Black markings, mask or points; or White markings or mask. This color type is not currently specified in the show breed standards. But, it is in-demand among Poodle puppy buyers. Are Standard Poodles Hypoallergenic? In truth, no dog breed is entirely hypoallergenic. Dog allergens are found in dander, saliva, and urine — so every dog will have them. So, many people with dog allergies find they show fewer symptoms around the Standard Poodle. If you suffer from dog allergies, this could be a good choice. But, you will also need to groom your dog very regularly, and employ a strict cleaning regime. Temperament Traits Standard Poodles tend to be active, intelligent dogs. They have a reputation for being aloof. But, this is more a calm reserve with strangers. They are very loving and loyal to members of their family. This quiet reserve also means that they are likely to be less distracted by other people when you want them to focus. Plus, they can be a sensitive breed, who will cringe or cower if you raise your voice to them. So, they are best handled gently, reflecting their own soft and adorable nature. Despite being a highly active dog, a well exercised Poodle will be quite happy to relax and sleep next to you. Instead, they will be a chilled-out companion as long as they have had sufficient daily exercise. Homes with Small Children Young Poodles, much like any juvenile dog, can be very bouncy. A lively young dog may need to be physically separated from a small child to prevent accidents. It is important to remember that any dog, however reliable they may seem, should be supervised around small children. This is because dogs and children can accidentally injure each other. Keeping a close eye will ensure that you avoid any potential problems or stress for the dog. They can have some guarding instincts, although these tend to be more in the vocal watchdog area. Barking Despite this quiet nature, Standard Poodles can be fans of their own voices. They tend to alert you to visitors, which is a trait that some families appreciate. If you are not a fan of barking, then make sure to never react to your dog woofing. Training and Exercise Despite their stereotype as being posh, stuck-up dogs, the Standard Poodle is actually a very clever and active, hard working dog. Standard Poodle training is something that both the dog and owner can really enjoy and benefit from. In fact, Standard Poodles excel at co-operating with their handlers and have a great capacity for physical activity. They also learn very quickly and can be taught numerous tricks and take part in a wide range of canine hobbies. As sensitive dogs, they work most effectively when trained using positive reinforcement methods. This will keep them happy and motivated throughout your sessions together, as well as increasing the strong bond between you. Socialization Socializing your Standard Poodle puppy is an important way to help ensure that he or she grows up into a confident, happy adult dog. This should begin from the day you bring her home at 8 weeks old. To start, you can carry her outside until her vaccinations have been completed to all the places you will want her to feel comfortable when she is older. Let her experience a variety of sites, sounds and smells. Secondly, make sure you have lots of visitors over to your home, and that they all make her feel happy and comfortable. All in all, if you let her associate strangers with pleasant experiences, she will be less likely to be wary of them approaching the house when she has grown up. Pedigree dogs with small populations like Standard Poodles will have greater problems with inherited diseases. Epilepsy Idiopathic epilepsy is sometimes seen in Standard Poodles. It is thought to be an inherited condition. So, you should not buy a puppy with a parent or grandparent who has ever had a seizure. Make sure that both parents have had eye examinations in the past year. The breeder should have certificates for these to show you. Hip Dysplasia You can significantly reduce the chances of getting a Poodle with hip dysplasia by only buying a puppy from parents with good hip scores. It os important to ensure that both parents have had DNA tests for this disorder before you bring your puppy home. Bloat Bloat is a common issue in several large breeds of dog. It occurs when gas causes the stomach to become distended. To help avoid bloat, feed your dog several smaller meals a day. You can feed him at ground level and, if necessary, put his food into a slow-feed bowl. Sebaceous Adenitis Sebaceous adenitis is an inflammatory skin disease that can affect Poodles. It can cause itching, hair loss, infections, blistering and scaling of the skin. There is not currently a DNA test for sebaceous adenines. So, it is important to ask your breeder whether any dogs in the line had skin problems. Symptoms can be quite vague and hard for the vet to diagnose. These symptoms include lethargy, gastro-intestinal issues, a low temperature and pain. So, you will need to ask about family history. General Care Standard Poodle care is very important. These are not low maintenance dogs. They require daily exercise, training, grooming and frequent company throughout the day. You will also need to clip their coat at least once every four weeks to keep it manageable. Take particular care to ensure that the coat is not getting into their eyes and irritating them or becoming matted around the feet or legs. What is the Standard Poodle Lifespan? The average Standard Poodle lifespan is around 12 years. They have shorter lifespans than their Miniature counterparts, who live on average 14 years. But, with good general care and a puppy from a reputable breeder, your Standard Poodle could live well into their teens. Rescuing a Standard Poodle There are many benefits to rescuing a Standard Poodle instead of buying one. For starters, you will also know whether an adult Poodle has any behavioral or temperament problems. In fact, many countries have breed centers dedicated to the Poodle breed. Finding a Puppy Standard Poodle puppies are all beautiful. Your best chance at getting a healthy puppy is to make sure that the Standard Poodle breeders have carried out all available tests on both parents, and to ask lots of questions. When you have found a breeder who fully health tests, you will probably have to go on a waiting list for a puppy. While you wait, arrange to meet the breeder and their dogs. Make sure that the parents are confident and laid back characters. Prices can vary depending on local demand, puppy parentage, pedigree and more.

It is a heavy shedder, making it hard for owners to clean up while trying to keep their coat healthy. The German Shepherd Border Collie mix sheds more often as it grows old, so owners must brush its fur daily to remove dander and dead hair. Here are some of the most recommended grooming equipment to maintain the coat of the German Shepherd mixed with Border Collie: Slicker Brush Slicker brushes are great combs to remove tangles and mats on long-haired dogs. The slicker brush can save owners time when brushing the coat of the German Shepherd Border Collie compared to regular combs. Detanglers Before using a slicker brush, owners will notice that the Border Collie German Shepherd mix has a lot of tangled hair. Dematting sprays can relax and soften the hair to make it easier for owners to untangle the knots. Owners must resort to this solution if the tangles are hard to remove despite the use of detanglers as dogs are not fond of sharp objects. Owners must avoid buying shampoo based on the odor or the low price. Owners must be aware of its coat type and skin to help them find oils and specialty ingredients that will be beneficial for the Border Collie mixed with German Shepherd. Grooming Wipes The German Shepherd mixed with Border Collie is an energetic dog that will be dirty when it finishes playing outside the house. Wet wipes are essential for dog owners that want to prevent mud and grass inside their residence. Microfiber Towel Human towels do not absorb all of the water on a dog. Because of its heavy coat, the German Shepherd Border Collie mix will likely be dripping wet despite a heavy rinsing. Microfiber towels can help remove water on a Border Collie German Shepherd cross better than human towels. The legs and hips of Border Collie German Shepherd will deteriorate as it ages. The hybrid dog will experience problems at an earlier rate depending on its activities as well. It may also be born deaf if one of its parent breeds already have hearing problems. Epilepsy The Border Collie breed is widely known for its tendency to suffer from epilepsy more than other dog breeds. The Border Collie German Shepherd mix may inherit this health problem as well. Epilepsy happens when the dog is experiencing episodic seizures. Fortunately, it is a rare disease among dogs. Degenerative Myelopathy When owners notice that the Border Collie German Shepherd mix is starting to walk funny on its back legs, it can be a symptom of Degenerative Myelopathy. This dog will become aggressive and timid if it does not participate in mental and physical activities. Its daily exercise requires about 60 minutes of running and playing outside of the house. If you happen to raise a Border Collie German Shepherd mix as a calm and independent dog, 2 hours of separate walks daily can keep it satisfied. This means they are not considered a purebred dog or a designer dog breed. Border Collies are athletic, loyal dogs with a high energy level. They love to move and work with their families. You can also meet the mother dog in-person for an idea about what to expect regarding general size and temperament. On the Border Collie side, you have a highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dog that loves to be active and loves to work. Border Collies get along well with other dogs and children, but can be reserved or slightly suspicious towards strangers. Otherwise, they will find their own entertainment, which might result in them herding your children or a flock of sheep into your kitchen. The Border Collie Mix could take all of its characteristics from the Border Collie, from the other parent dog breed in the mix, or be any combination of characteristics from both. Before bringing a Border Collie Mix home, make sure you take some time to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed of the litter. This will give you a good idea of what possibilities to prepare for in your Border Collie Mix puppy. The Border Collie is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They may be a high-energy dog breed that prefers wide open spaces, but they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. A well-exercised, mentally engaged Border Collie is also okay with being alone. In terms of climate, this dog breed does best in a moderate climate as they do not do well in hot or cold climates. With a Border Collie Mix, you could end up with a dog that is moderately adaptable like the Border Collie. Or, you could end up with a dog more similar to the other parent breed. This could result in a more adaptable or less adaptable dog depending on the cross. Having a conversation with the breeder about the other parent breed can clear up some of the confusion and give you a better idea of what to expect. Border Collies are generally healthy, but can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. You can also ask about the genetic history of the parents and check out health screenings and health clearances to rule out some conditions. On the Border Collie side, you have a dog that is highly intelligent and eager to learn. They are generally difficult for the average person to train, so you will want to enroll in obedience and training classes with your Border Collie Mix puppy regardless of the other parent breed. Even if the dog breed in the cross is highly trainable for novice dog owners, there is the possibility the puppy will pick up Border Collie characteristics and be more difficult to train. A well-trained and properly socialized puppy is more likely to grow into a well-rounded dog, so make sure you start training and socialization early. Border Collies have a weather-resistant double coat that requires weekly brushing. They also have heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change and need to be brushed more frequently during this time. Depending on the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix, their coat could require more or less grooming. Finding out about the other parent breed from the breeder will give you an idea of what you could expect when it comes to coat. Regardless of the coat, all dogs need to have their nails trimmed, teeth brushed, and ears checked regularly. For most dogs, trimming nails once a month is sufficient. When it comes to dental care for your dog , brushing their teeth daily is recommended. This will help prevent the tartar and plaque buildup that leads to dental disease. If your Border Collie Mix has ears that drop down, they are more prone to moisture and developing an infection. Regularly checking them and cleaning as needed helps reduce the risk of ear infections in your dog. Border Collies have a lot of energy and never seem to get tired. They love to be moving and working. Plus, they were originally bred to run several miles a day and they still have the energy to do so. It is important that you are prepared to handle a high energy working dog when you choose a Border Collie Mix puppy. If the other parent breed is a couch potato, your puppy could end up having a lower energy level. A Border Collie tends to weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and usually stands 18 to 22 inches tall. The other parent breed could cause this to vary. So, be sure to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix. Also, make sure you stop by to meet the mother dog. There are always exceptions, but the size of the mother will at least give you something to work with. A Border Collie typically lives 12 to 15 years. You could expect a similar range in your Border Collie Mix with the understanding that the other parent breed could affect the range one way or the other. Featured Border Collie Mix Article.

How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in New Jersey? Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. They are also very intelligent which makes them easy to train. These dogs are friendly and good with children, but they may be too big for small children. The German Shepherd: The German Shepherd is a very smart breed of dog that is protective and loyal to its family. They are also excellent guard dogs, but they need early socialization when they are puppies so they can become accustomed to different people, places, and things in the environment. The Corgi: The Corgi gets its name from its short little legs which are similar to a Welsh Corgis short legs because it is in the same family as the German Shepherd Akita mix breed. The Corgi tends to be stubborn at times, but they learn well by repetition. Their trainability shines through in training sessions. The Akita: The Akita has an independent personality that often clashes with other breeds in the same household. This may cause them to have behavior if there are multiple pets in the household. They are best with older children because they view small children as prey. The Akita is a very amazing guard dog because of its alert nature, loyalty, and protectiveness. The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix breed has the physical characteristics of each parent breed that can vary depending on whether they take after their German Shepherd or Corgi side more. These dogs will have a short to medium-length double coat that is long but thick which makes them weatherproofed for both hot and cold weather conditions. Grooming requirements for this dog depend on whether they have mostly German shepherd traits or mostly Corgi traits. Akitas typically need a diet that is high in omega-3 fatty acids to help with joint health. And Corgis may require a diet that is higher in fiber to help with digestion. If you are looking to feed your German Shepherd Akita Corgi a balanced diet, it is best to consult with your veterinarian. Each correct answer donates to help feed shelter animals. However, we go more in depth to the history of both breeds. As his name suggests, the German Shepherd originated in Germany, where he was created in the nineteenth century primarily by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who wanted to develop a dog that could be used for military and police work. The result was a dog that encompassed striking good looks, intelligence and versatility. German Shepherds braved artillery fire, land mines and tanks to supply German soldiers in the trenches with deliveries of food and other necessities. American audiences loved them. For a time, the German Shepherd was the most popular breed in the United States. It is one of two breeds known as a Welsh Corgi. The other is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and both descend from the line that is the northern spitz-type dog. An example of a spitz breed is the Siberian Husky. Another theory is that Pembrokes are descended from the Swedish Vallhunds, which were crossed with the local Welsh herding dogs. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the younger of the two Akita Corgi breeds and is a separate and distinct breed from the Cardigan. The Corgi is one of the smallest dogs in the Herding Group. It is said that Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 during her reign and are her preferred breed. These dogs have been favored by British royalty for more than seventy years, but among British Commoners, have recently fallen into decline in terms of popularity and demand. The story goes that the Vikings and Flemish weavers brought the dogs with them as they traveled to settle in Wales. Going back as far as the 10th century, Akita Corgis were herding sheep, geese, ducks, horses, and cattle. They are known as one of the oldest herding breed of dogs. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are becoming more popular in the United States and rank 20th 24th in American Kennel Club registrations, as of .The Akita is a large dog breed that originated in the mountainous northern regions of Japan. There are two separate varieties of Akita: a Japanese strain, and an American strain, known as the "Akita" or "American Akita". The Japanese strain called the Akita Inu comes in a narrow palette of colors, with all other colors considered atypical of the breed, while the American strain known simply as the Akita comes in all dog colors. The Akita has a short double-coat similar to that of the Siberian Husky, but long-coated dogs can be found in many litters due to a recessive gene. The Akita is a powerful, independent and dominant breed. Japanese history describes the ancestors of the Akita, the Matagi dog as one of the oldest of the native dogs. The Matagi's quarry included wild boar, Sika deer, and Asian black bear. This early dog tracked large game, holding it at bay until hunters arrived to make the kill. Bernards, and the Tosa Inu. Unfortunately, this was done to create a fighting dog as that industry was taking off in the early 20th century. During World War II the Akita was also crossed with German Shepherd Dogs in an attempt to save them from the wartime government order for all non-military dogs to be culled. The ancestors of the American Akita were originally a variety of the Japanese Akita, a form that was not desired in Japan due to the markings, and which is not eligible for show competition. This very humble and loyal dog helped push the Akita into the international dog world. Professor Ueno lived near the Shibuya Train Station in a suburb of the city and commuted to work every day on the train. On May 25, , Professor Ueno suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage at work. He walked to and from the station each day for the next nine years. He returned home where the professor's relatives cared for him, but he never gave up the vigil at the station for his master. His behavior became world-renowned and in , a bronze statue was erected at the Shibuya train station in his honor. He died shortly after. This statue was melted down for munitions during the war, but a new one was commissioned after the war. Because the Akita is such a stubborn dog, there is not much you can do if you are trying to house train it. This makes him a very good pet to get around young children. This dog takes up lots of space and due to the high energy levels, it needs to get room to run freely daily. This dog is mild-mannered and is extremely patient too. These dogs really like to play for hours and hours, and relish the outdoors. Make sure you satisfy both parents. The most suitable breeder for you will ask you plenty of questions regarding your dog knowledge, home, and how you plan to take care of the puppy. The two of these breeds can be prolific shedders, and so you will want to put money into a great grooming tool and an excellent pet hair vacuum! This designer dog breed could be called a Golden Labrador, but it can appear in many colors. The German Shepherd Akita is a very sweet, well-trained dog that is very gentle and affectionate towards humans. They are very loyal and love to please their owners. You will find that some breeders sell purebred Akita mix puppies for sale in the USA which are purebred Akita mixes. This means that they have taken Akita dogs and German Shepherds and then bred them to make a new and unique combination. The Akita is a very popular breed and several companies sell purebred Akita mix puppies for sale in the USA, and you will find that there are plenty of them on the internet. It is a wonderful place to find just about anything nowadays with the way the world has started to become smaller. With the internet, you can find just about anything you want, and the Akita is one of those dogs. If you are looking for Akita puppies for sale, the internet is definitely the place to go. You can look up all the information you need and get some pretty good prices as well. Most people think that Akita puppies for sale are a lot more expensive than they should be. But they are not. The main thing to know is that German Shepherds are very active dogs. They need vigorous training and socialization to keep them healthy and happy, but with proper training, they can be great pets for any family. If you have never had the pleasure of owning an Akita then you may not realize how difficult it is to train one. But with German Shepherd mix puppies for sale, you can teach your puppy what to do and when. When you do this, the Akita will quickly learn how to behave and how to react to different situations. However, there are things that you can do to help with the training process. One of the best things that you can do is begin your mix puppy training while it is still a puppy. This way the dog knows what is expected of him from day one. Another good idea is to start training when your dog is about a year old. They will also be able to understand your commands and understand the meaning behind them. The younger the dog is, the easier it is to train since he or she will be more receptive to training. While German Shepherd mix puppies for sale are great dogs, you also need to be aware of a few potential problems. The first is that they can be somewhat sensitive at three months. Because they are new to everything around them they can be a little jealous of their surroundings. This can lead to some separation anxiety. This problem is generally corrected as the puppy gets older but may persist if they are raised with too few humans. You also need to be aware of their energy level. These dogs are highly energetic and very likely to get bored if left to their own devices for too long. A great way to get your dog to quiet down is to play with them. Let them play when they want to and they will eventually learn to go along with your games. These dogs are great with children and other pets. They are also very affectionate towards their owners and other animals. Because of this, they are also very trainable. With proper training, your Akita can be an amazing companion. Share this:. They could take on traits from just one parent or any combination of traits from both of them. An Akita tends to be loyal, devoted, and dedicated to their families. They do tend to get along well with children, but they tend to be wary of strangers and they have a high prey drive. Although they tend to be quiet dogs, they will bark to alert you. This makes them good watchdogs. On top of that, Akitas have an instinct to guard and protect. This makes socialization and training early and often particularly important for this breed. You may be able to expect a similar temperament in your Akita Mix. However, the other dog breed in the mix could affect their temperament. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed can help prepare you for all of the possibilities. Meeting the mother dog can also give you an idea of what temperament to expect in your Akita Mix puppy. Akitas are moderately adaptable dogs that can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need to be happy and healthy. Due to their protective instincts and high prey drive, they should only be let off-leash in securely fenced areas. A mixed-breed dog can inherit any combination of the potential health concerns common to one or both of the parent breeds. From the Akita side, the potential health concerns to be aware of in an Akita Mix include hip dysplasia, thyroid issues, skin conditions, progressive retinal atrophy, and acquired myasthenia gravis. Reputable breeders will screen their breeding stock to avoid passing issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross. Also, talk to them about the genetic and health history of both of the parent breeds. Although Akitas love their family and prefer to be near them, they also have an independent nature. They are highly intelligent and pick up training quickly, but they can also have a stubborn streak. This can be difficult for a first-time dog owner to navigate on their own. The other parent breed could balance this out, but you still need to be prepared for a potentially hard-headed pooch. As such, puppy training classes are recommended. Regardless of owner experience, puppy training classes can still be a good idea as these classes often offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. Akitas have a dense double coat that will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and moving to daily brushing during seasonal shedding can help your dog be more comfortable and contain a lot of the loose fur to your brush. Bathing is on an as-needed basis. Monthly nail trimming is usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Many dog owners overlook this, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health problems in dogs. Practicing good dental care for dogs can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal. Akitas tend to have a moderate activity level. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are usually sufficient for these dogs. The other parent breed could affect the exercise needs for an Akita Mix. By talking to the breeder about the other parent breed, you can get a good idea of what sort of energy range to prepare for in your puppy. A fully-grown Akita usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other dog breed in the mix can seriously affect the size you could see in a fully-grown Akita Mix. So, make sure you talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. Akitas generally live for years. The other parent breed in the cross could have an effect on this for an Akita Mix. Talking to the breeder about it can help clarify to what extent it could be affected if at all. Featured Akita Mix Article.

I'm proud to say that I'm an excellent walker on a leash. I enjoy our walks together and promise to make them enjoyable for both of us. I absolutely love being petted by everyone I meet. My heart swells with joy when you show me affection, and I'll return the love tenfold. If you have cats at home, that's no problem for me. I've lived with them before and got along just fine. I do best in a home with adults only. I appreciate the calm and quiet environment they provide. I'm a bit cautious around high-energy dogs. I've had a few issues when they approached me. So, I might be more comfortable in a space where I can have calm interactions. I've been described as "perfect" and "super sweet" with humans, and I wear those titles proudly. I'm here to be your loyal and loving companion. I did have a moment when I growled and felt uncomfortable around a couple of high-energy dogs. I even tried to chase a squirrel once - it just seemed too tempting! As for jogging, I felt a bit fearful when they tried that with me, so I prefer to stick with walking. But don't worry, my low energy makes me super easy to walk, and I promise to be your best friend on those leisurely strolls. So, if you're an adult looking for a sweet and loving companion who's great on a leash, that's me! I'm Daisy, and I'm eagerly waiting for a loving home where I can share all my affection and companionship. Pitbull puppies for sale in sc craigslist 4 female and 3 male. View Details. Maintain this schedule for at least three weeks before decreasing the number of potty breaks. Establishing good habits takes time, but consistency will teach your pup to trust and depend on you. Use a Leash Using a leash during potty training kills two birds with one stone. But, you can also use these short sessions to reinforce leash training by giving treats for staying close, not pulling, and for walking in a straight line. Pro tip: Even if you have a fenced-in backyard, teach your dog to go potty along the fence line or near bushes. Pooping in low-foot traffic areas will save you and houseguests from stepping in poop in the future. While praise is a reward in itself your dog just wants to make you happy, after all , treats are an excellent motivator. Take your pup to a dog-friendly indoor place. Common dog-friendly locales include: Pet stores Farm supply and feed stores Breweries and wineries Make sure to bring clean-up supplies in the event of an accident poop bags, paper towels, and Clorox wipes. Let your pup relieve themselves outside before you go inside, walk your pup around the store while reinforcing and rewarding good leash behavior , and take them back outside just in time for another potty break. Plus, you can get in some valuable leash training and socialization time. A chocolate Toy Poodle eating from a ceramic bowl Potty Pads are Your Friend During the first few weeks of puppy parenthood, accidents are inevitable. In the meantime, place potty pads in strategic locations around the house. Regular treats can be high-calorie, and even cut into small pieces, they can still be pretty calorie-dense. Create and Maintain a Safe Space Before you bring your pup home for the first time, make sure they have a safe space to sleep, get comfortable, eat, and play with their toys in peace. Provide treats for going inside, and begin closing the door for short periods to acclimate them to the space. This early reinforcement is critical for: Reinforcing that their crate is a safe space That being alone is okay Start small: Leave your pup in their safe space for five minutes three times per day and at bedtime on the first day. Repeat this for a second day, and increase the sessions by five minutes every other day until your dog can calmly and without accidents stay in its crate for an hour. But, the time spent is worth every minute: After a few weeks of intensive training, your pup will be a seasoned master of outside potty breaks! Keeping Your Home Healthy and Clean These two objectives require that your pet or toy poodle be house-trained. It may take a little time, but you can potty train your dog so that your home remains healthy and clean all the time. To learn how to achieve this goal, just continue to read our article. It has the information you need to know about so you can effectively train your pet and keep your house nice and clean. Tips to Potty Train Your Poodle 1. Create a Potty Schedule— Make sure to have this schedule reach at least four times and keep strictly to the schedule so your dog will learn what it is supposed to do. These 4 sessions should last between 15 and 20 minutes. Since a dog can hold their bladder one hour for each month of life approx. You should expect some accidents to happen from time to time. Try a Litter Box— This method is not that hard, and you can put the litter box in a small room so that your pup does not have a lot of options available other than that box. Make sure to praise and reward your pet when they successfully use the litter box. Use a Bell— Because the poodle species is very intelligent, you can teach them to ring a bell every time they need to go outside. That way you can hear the bell and respond quicker than if they just whined or sat by the door. Just be ready to hear that bell ring often as your poodle may use it to tell you they want to go outside and play or go for a walk. Use the Same Command- This is essential to potty train your pet. They will associate that command with the exact spot they are to go to the bathroom. Use the command when you take them to the same spot every training session. Make sure to reward him or her when they obey and do this task right. Go Potty is a Good Command to Use— Keep the command simple and one your pet can understand and learn quickly. Then when he or she responds correctly, praise and reward them with a nice treat and a few good boys or good girl words. Just be patient as potty training is not an overnight task or something that will be done in a day or two. Use Praise and Rewards— This is vital when you are training your pet to go outside or in a litter box. Rewarding them reinforces positive behavior and lets them know they did it right. The key here is not to give him or her lots of rewards at one time. You want them to remain slim and healthy. Walk Your Dog— This is to be done after they have had their meal or have taken a drink. They will get used to this activity and learn where they are to go to the bathroom and when. You may have to wait about 20 or 30 minutes afterwards as it does take your toy poodle some time to process their food and water. Use a Crate— This is a trick used by many dog owners and it seems to be very effective in training your dog to go potty where they are supposed to. Dogs, especially poodles, do not like going to the bathroom near their beds so this is a handy tool too. Make sure to take them to their designated bathroom area for them to relieve themselves. Stay Consistent— You do not want to do random training, use random commands, or random bathroom areas. You need to remain consistent, use the same commands, the same spot, and the same time frames to effectively train your pet. If a mistake is made in the house, show him or her where they are supposed to go. Be gentle but firm in your punishment. You need to kill those odors so that your puppy does not return to the same spot and use it again. Use odor-killing products to eliminate those smells and teach your pet to go in the right spot. Some Final Words Like anything else worth doing, you will need to take your time, be patient and reinforce your training. Do not overly punish when mistakes happen but teach them that those areas are not to be used. Then remind them where they are supposed to go. Be consistent and use the same technique every training session until your pet learns what they are to do. Once they learn, your efforts will be rewarded. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This is a training method whereby good behavior is rewarded and so the dog wishes to repeat it to get a treat. Bad behavior, on the other hand, is either ignored or acknowledged with a brief verbal rebuke or other non-violent means of showing your displeasure. The idea behind this is to provide your dog with information that it chose the wrong action. This might be food, a special toy, or just praising it. Even fussy eaters have something they love to eat that is a special treat for them. The trick is to find this treat. Try morsels of different foods, such as cheese, hotdog sausage, steak, chicken, or a commercial training treat, until you find one the dog really loves. You are going to use this treat as your pup's reward. Pippa Mattinson. This way you will be ready to reward the dog's good behavior throughout the day. Be careful not to overfeed the dog however. When using treats, cut back on your pup's daily food ration at mealtimes so as to compensate for the extra calories represented by the treats. Another factor to be aware of is that giving treats every time the dog does good can make it lazy, as the dog assumes it will get a treat. Once it learns to work for treats, make the reward intermittent, such as every fourth or fifth rewardable action, so that the dog stays on his or her best behavior to earn that reward. Training your dog to be a good canine citizen means helping it to be confident in different places, and with different people and other animals. This will help make your pet well-adjusted and able to adapt to various situations without displaying anxiety. Puppies have a socialization period where they learn more rapidly, so take advantage of this by taking your puppy to visit other people and carry the puppy alongside roads so she can get used to the sound of traffic and the such like. This window of opportunity closes at 18 weeks, after which the dog continues to learn but more slowly. Bonnie Beaver. Saunders Though adult toy poodles are trainable, it is much easier to teach younger dogs before bad behavior issues arise. Learn more » Bringing home a new poodle, whether an adult or a puppy, is an exciting and life-changing adventure. Potty training is a long process that requires patience and commitment. The key to successfully housebreaking your new puppy is positive reinforcement and consistency. With a little help from your friends here at Hepper, your poodle can be fully potty trained in just a few months. Keep reading to find our tips on how to make the potty training process as easy as possible for both you and your pooch. Before 12 weeks, puppies are still developing the muscles they need to hold their urine and feces. After your poodle reaches 3 months of age, you can increase the intervals to the same number of hours as their age in months. Your goal for potty training should be to go above and beyond by instilling in them the importance of eliminating in a designated area. Choose somewhere in your yard where your pup can feel safe and somewhere that will be accessible in all seasons. The corner of your lot by the fence might be okay in the summer, but will your poodle want to wade through the snow to get there in the winter? Take them to the same spot every time you take them outside to go potty. Put your dog on a leash whenever you take them outside to the bathroom. Reward, Never Punish Praise and rewards go a long way with any animal. While praise and words of encouragement are rewards themselves, treats are one of the best training tools you should have in your potty training arsenal. When your poodle eliminates in the appropriate place, offer praise and a reward immediately. You can also begin implementing clicker training at this point by marking the positive action urination or defecation with a click and then a treat. Punishment is never an acceptable training method. Outdated techniques recommend hitting your dog with a newspaper, raising your voice at them and telling them how bad they are, or rubbing their face in their own urine or defecation. Dogs do not associate these harmful behaviors with doing something wrong. All punishment does is teach your puppy to be afraid of you. You may not be able to smell the remains with your human nose, but you can best bet your pup can. These can be purchased from any pet store and will be your best friend as you wade through the challenges that potty training a puppy can present. You can even try creating your own at home with ingredients you probably already have on hand, like white vinegar and baking soda. Not only does it permanently remove the very worst smells and stains yes, everything you can imagine! Click here to get yourself a bottle. Approach Potty Pads Carefully Potty pads can be a useful potty training tool in some situations. Allowing your puppy to use a potty pad inside your home can cause confusion about where it is appropriate to eliminate, dragging out the potty training process. If you must use potty pads, designate one area of your home where your puppy can relieve itself and put the pads there. You might put down several pads at first but then begin to reduce the number you lie down as your puppy gets used to this area being their spot to eliminate. Make sure you take them to the potty pads often to help them connect the dots that they are to be used for peeing and pooping. Constant Supervision Constant supervision is one of the essential parts of successful potty training. Some dogs will be able to hold it longer than others, and some will need to go to the bathroom whenever they play or get too excited. The most common signs your dog needs to pee or poop include: Sniffing around. Poodle Puppy House Training Overview While housebreaking a puppy may feel like a huge obstacle that is time-consuming at best and an undertaking that may fail at worst, there are definitely things that you can do to set your Poodle puppy up for success for potty training. There are 2 main elements: Having a clear plan in mind that will encourage a pup to learn quickly Having reasonable expectations based on the age of your Poodle In this section, we will go over all of the important steps for effective and fast training. Age to House Train This is most certainly not something that you will want to put off. Whether you have a brand-new Poodle puppy or an older, adopted dog that needs to learn, it is best to begin right away. Every day that this is not taught, is another day that the dog has wrong information about what to do and this just in and of itself will make housebreaking harder. Keep in mind that new puppies should not be brought outside to public areas or even your yard if there is a chance that other dogs have been there until the full rounds of puppy vaccinations are complete. Each vet schedule is slightly different; however, in general this is done by about the 4 month mark. If you are not sure, check with your vet. Having a Housebreaking Plan It's not uncommon for a puppy to pee or have a bowel movement with very little warning. And without a plan in place, this is when you'll see owners scrambling and picking up the pup while he dribbles urine as he's being carried out the door. While you will not catch every accident, you really will have much better success when you and all members of the family have a clear potty training plan in place. We would suggest reviewing what is needed, obtaining all of the necessities to be properly prepped, and then beginning. What is Needed Before You Begin There are a few things that you will need in order for housebreaking to be successful: 1 A supervision method. This is vital. Puppies or dog that have free rein in the house will be exceptionally hard to train. When you are home and are able to have your Poodle right by your side, use the tethering method. This means that your Poodle will be wearing a harness not a collar, since this can cause neck injury and will be on leash. The leash should be short and it should have a soft-looped handle, so that you can weave this through your belt loop or slip it over your wrist. When you are not home, or if you are home but cannot keep your Poodle near you, you'll need to keep your puppy or dog in a defined, secure area. Crates are not recommended; these are terribly confining and can cause a dog to feel both physically and emotionally stressed. Furthermore, they do not help with housebreaking; a dog will pee and poo when they need to. Gating off an entire room is also not recommended. This is too large of an area to do really do anything, and therefore there will still be pee and poo everywhere. One of the best methods is to use an indoor canine playpen. These are sturdy, open-top pens that allow a Poodle to move around, play, have all his favorite belongings food, water, toys, bed , but also keep messes contained. As a side note, these are great for separation anxiety, as they offer a secure 'den' that keeps all of a Poodle's aids right by them. And, these are perfect for the teething phase to keep a Poodle puppy from chewing apart the house. Recommended playpens to help with house training are below. These can be found with or without doors, and range from 24" ideal for toy and miniature Poodles to 48" better for standards, especially if continued to be used as the puppy grows. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. And on mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. Giving a Poodle incentive to do something applies to potty training, perhaps, more than it does with any other single action. Once something is a learned behavior, it become automatic though it is still nice to reinforce good behavior now and again. For housebreaking to happen quickly, you need to 1 give super-happy praise and simultaneously 2 offer the right type of reward. The training treat should be: New - It should not be something that you give to your Poodle for regular snacks. If you've found a great, all-natural and healthy snack that you'd like to keep giving, see if it comes in a different flavor. Small - House training treats need to be small. A puppy needs immediate satisfaction, and you cannot achieve this with something that a dog needs to sit down to chew on. Extra flavorful - It should be appealing to a Poodle sense of smell and sense of taste, offering a burst of flavor that will encourage the desire for more. And 'more' can only happen when the Poodle goes to the bathroom in the right area. Below are our top recommended training treats. And on mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. Dogs that are simply brought 'outside' for bathroom needs rarely have a good, clear understanding of what is expected. If they are out there long enough, they may very well go to the bathroom. However, your goal should be going above this and instilling the full concept of having one area for urination and elimination needs. Choose the area wisely; what may seem like a great spot in the summer may not work well in the winter. The bathroom area should be close to the home, not a spot that is used for anything else play area, gardening, etc. Within the chosen area, allow your Poodle to choose the exact spot that he prefers. Dogs that have a choice learn much faster and are more eager to follow the rules. It is best to stand in the middle of the area with your puppy on a 6 to 8 foot leash. Allow him to circle around and, sniff. Some will then need time for the bladder to relax or for the bowel muscles to push out stool. Since young puppies have weak bladder and bowel muscles, they can often pee or poo with very little warning. Whatever you need in order to bring your Poodle outside should be ready at the exit door. This will include a pair of shoes, an appropriate coat or jacket depending on the weather, clothing for your Poodle - should there be a need, an umbrella in case it is raining, a leash and even a book or magazine to thumb though while you wait. For the times that you are home, you will want to bring your Poodle to the designated area at the following times: First thing in the morning Any time right after the puppy wakes up from a nap Every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old, every 4 hours for a 4 month old, etc. It would certainly make things easier if dogs understood what we were saying when we spoke full sentences after they did something that we didn't approve of. However, puppies that are rewarded for good deeds and quietly forgiven for accidents are able to pick up what the owner wishes for without any scolding. Please remember that you want your Poodle to respect you, not fear you. And while it may feel good to release a bit of steam if you find a puddle of pee, yelling or acting frustrated will only confused and stress a puppy that really has no idea why you are upset. Dogs learn best when they can associate a word with an action. So, you'll want everyone in the house to be in agreement as to which word s will be used for housebreaking. It's best to keep it short, and have it be something that you do not feel uncomfortable saying in public. You will use this as you head outside 'Do you need to go potty? While some puppies will instantly pee or poo, others need time. Owners that only give the pup only a few minutes may have trouble with the training. Since 5 minutes can feel like 20 if you are bored, cold or otherwise uncomfortable or antsy, plan ahead. Have an outdoor chair located right in the middle of the bathroom area and plan ahead to check your mail or email during these times. It is recommended to give the puppy a good 15 minutes and if you just know that a bowel movement is due, give it .While on this note, one of the biggest problems that owners encounter is when a puppy won't pee in his spot no matter how long there, but will pee as soon as being brought back inside. A good tip to fix this, should it happen often, is hold him after you come back inside he won't pee on you ; then head back out in about 10 minutes. While young Poodles need to be taken out often see above , if they are kept on that schedule as they mature, they will not have an opportunity to learn to hold their needs and bladder and bowel muscles will not strengthen as they otherwise would. As you puppy grows older, stretch out the periods of time in between taking him out. While the carpet may look clean after you scrub it with dish soap and a sturdy brush, soap does not eliminate enzymes that are in urine. And those lingering enzymes you won't smell these, but your Poodle will essentially scream 'This is the bathroom area! So, all areas that have been pee'd or poo'd on need to be cleaned with an enzyme cleanser. Puppies are terrific at making whining noises and barking in the middle of the night, without letting us know if they need to go to the bathroom or are just bored and wanting some attention. If a puppy pees and poos before bedtime, it is far more likely that he wants your company as opposed to having a real need. However, it is always best to be safe than sorry. The important element is that this be done in a very serious manner without any play or other interaction. Keep lights low, bring your Poodle puppy directly to his spot, wait the allotted time without speaking other than praise if the deed is done and then bring him right back. A puppy will soon learn that barking for attention at night does not bring about any interaction that would seem worthy of making a fuss but that alerting you in regard to bathroom needs does result in praise and a quick treat. It's a common occurrence for owners to bring their Poodle for a walk in the neighborhood and just let the puppy go to the bathroom along the way. However, this is a missed opportunity for a house training lesson. Bring your Poodle to his spot first and then bring him for his exercise. Housebreaking Exact Steps This is exactly how to bring your Poodle out, what to say, and what to do: 1. Head outside with your Poodle on leash and harness, saying your chosen phrase Let's go potty , and with the training treats in a small zipped plastic bag, kept in your pocket. Lead your Poodle directly to the designated bathroom area, repeating the phrase. Stand in the middle of the designated area, allowing your Poodle to roam within the diameter and sniff around. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. If your Poodle pees or poos, without completely distracting your pup, mark the action with your chosen word said in a happy tone, You're going potty. During this time, be reaching for the training treat. As soon as your Poodle is done, bend to his level, give great praise in a super-enthusiastic voice Good potty, oh, you are such a good dog! If your Poodle had a bowel movement, and you believe that there may be a urination need, remain outside for an additional 5 minutes. A Final Word While you will need a bit of patience during this time, with a good plan and lots of enthusiasm from you, your Poodle puppy should be completely house trained with a few months. After you feel that he is fully trained, be sure to still bring him out often enough, and continue to offer praise to reinforce the lessons that have been learned. How to Stop a Poodle From Marking - Both males and females may display territorial marking, and this is a separate issue than housebreaking. Learn why dogs do this, and exactly how to stop it. And oh how lucky we are when some seem to just come that way! My first dog kya she was so dang easy. It really gave me a false idea of what is was like to potty train a dog. She literally came that way. BUT every dog since nope! Like people they are different and learn in different ways. Below are several methods you can use to potty train a dog. Try to feed him his meals at the same time each day and take him outside after every meal. If you feed your puppy at the same time each day you will be able to predict when he will need to go out, however some puppies like my teacup poodle can pee A-LOT so keep that in mind. Yes I am serious, one it keeps them close to you always which they love and two they are less likely to pee right next to you, but if they do you can say in a loud voice and clap NO while they do it pick them right up and put them on the grass to finish or at least to know this is where we potty. If they do finish on the grass praise them, praise them, praise them! Sniffing the ground and walking in circles are common signs that a dog has to go. Dogs do not like to potty where they sleep. When you can take them out again take them from the kennel to the grass. I learned once dogs have memory or use their memory through the bottom of their paws. If they have been trained to pee on the grass then when their feet hit the grass they know its time to pee. I will get into how this worked for us once with one of my dogs farther down. You may also reward your puppy with a small piece of food or with a physical reward such as a belly rub. Rewarding your puppy for good behavior is the best way to encourage them to repeat that behavior in the future. In fact our teacup is so small we stuff the back of the kennel with a towel so he only has enough room to lay and sleep. No kennel is small enough for him and we even have a kitten kennel. Take your puppy outside right before and immediately after confining them to the kennel. Lead your puppy to the grass and give him a chance to do his business then reward him when he does so. This has been proven to make potty training more difficult. Spanking or punishing your dog for going inside. If your dog does not know they are supposed to go outside and you punish them, you are only damaging the relationship you have with your dog. Yelling at your dog for going inside. This will lead the dog to avoid letting you know it needs to go or refusing to go when you are there, which makes providing a reward impossible. Then immediately take the dog outside or to the designated place. Failing to assign a consistent command word for the act of elimination. You do will hear only the first sound and then over time associate that first sound with going to the bathroom. Never use that word mad or mean keep it a positive word. On a leash take the puppy outside to the desired pee area for example your lawn we have a doggie door, so we take them to them door help them through until they figure it out then meet them outside and we grab the leash and walk them over to the spot on the lawn. Side NOTE…. So now take the puppy back inside BUT now the puppy needs to be held by you or back on a leash tied to you and goes every where you go. As stated above the kennel must only be big enough to sleep in. For a teacup I would say 15 minutes. Continue with this process until it goes to the bathroom. Then when all done crouch down to their level and hand them a treat while saying the Special Word. This helps teach them look when I pee outside I can be rewarded and this is a good thing. After about a week you can now try taking the dog off the leash and walking with it outside to its potty spot. If the puppy goes on the grass in the spot you have trained it to go, say your word while it goes potty. This tells the dog they did a very good thing and should definitely do it again. This will help the dog want to hold it so that they can go outside and get 5 treats. Make sure someone is always watching the dog so you know when it has gone and so you can reward it. This will go on for about two weeks. A teacup and their tiny bladder will be multiple times while playing and even after eating until they learn control. Using potty pads also called puppy pads, or pee pads is one way to help teach your puppy where it is appropriate to use the bathroom. Consistency is key to this training technique, which you can then use to also teach your puppy to eventually potty outside. The idea behind using a potty pad is to provide a visible, consistent area for your puppy to go potty. Large breed dogs may need heavy duty options compared to toy breeds. Newspaper and paper towels can be messy and difficult to clean up after your puppy potties on them, but they are inexpensive. Cloth towels are absorbent but will need to be washed regularly, and your puppy is more likely to try to chew on it like a blanket or toy. Store bought pee pads are the most popular option due to their absorbency, size options, and ease-of-disposal. Introduce the puppy to the pad allow your puppy to see and sniff the potty pads you chose. Puppies usually potty after sleeping, eating, drinking, and after playing. If your puppy starts sniffing around on the ground instead of playing or chewing on a toy, this is a good indication that it needs to go potty. Your puppy may have to go potty every two to three hours. Get in the habit of taking your puppy to the potty pad every 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on your puppy breed. After about a week you can now try taking the dog off the leash and walking with it to the peeped. If the puppy goes on the pad i, say your word while it goes potty. This tells the dog they did a very good thing and should definitely do it again. .This will help the dog want to hold it so that they can go on the pad and get 5 treats. I bought this cage , you can find it on Walmart. It is quite a bit bigger but I folded it tiny. He hops right in the peepad side when he needs to go than climbs around, eats, or sleeps on the other side. It has worked great. How to pee pad train your puppy how to pee pad train my puppy Option 4 Outside If you have a yard with grass this option will work and can be just what you need. If you do not have a fenced back yard this option will not be for you. Well one day I was told a puppy trains its self where to pee by the feeling of their paw touching that surface. We were then told to undo that she was 2 by this point we had to leave her out side all day and kennel her at night. This would retrain her paws to send that signal to the brain oh grass is where I pee. Now do not just put them out and forget them! We also brought her in when we could be right with her and snuggled on her and played with her but most of the time she staid out side all day. At night put them in the kennel as describe above many times. Then in the morning right back outside. We did this for two weeks and guess what it totally fixed the problem. We had another dog that as a puppy we went with the same method and same thing it totally worked. Our other dogs we did one of the three options above.

Lifespan Sociability The Maltipoo is a mix between the gentle and playful Maltese and the active and smart Poodle. They can have any mix of these traits. They may be brilliant or have more average intelligence. Their exercise needs can vary a bit as well, depending on how active they are. Most of the time, these dogs are decently smart and typically train pretty quickly. Of course, this can vary quite a bit. Some may be smarter than others. Usually, Maltipoos are friendly. Early socialization and training ensure that they are accepting of strangers and other pets as well. These are not typically aggressive in the least. Maltipoos are described as 1st generation or 2nd generation. These are one of the few mixed breeds that are sometimes bred past the 1st generation. Colors vary greatly. Maltipoos can look very different from each other. They come in a variety of different colors. You can find a puppy in just about any color. Size depends on the size of the Poodle used. The Poodle used in breeding has a large role in the size of the puppy. Usually, toy Poodles are used, and this is the size we have used when writing this article. However, rarely, standard Poodles are used, and this results in an enormous puppy. They are affectionate and usually gentle. Puppies can be playful and quite active. However, they tend to calm down as they age. Some may stay relatively active into adulthood, like their Poodle parent. They are well-suited to families with children who like to play as well as snuggle. These dogs are a bit loud and vocal. They can make good alert dogs on some occasions, depending on their specific character and training. Maltipoos tend to bark at anyone who passes by. Related Read: Maltese vs. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are playful and cuddly, so they fit in with many different people. They are usually very friendly with strangers and friends alike. Sometimes, these dogs are not particularly good with children, though. They are smaller and can be more easily injured by toddlers and preschoolers. This can cause them to snap and be more fearful of children. This dog is not incredibly territorial, nor does it have a significant prey drive. Of course, dogs that are properly socialized and raised around cats and other pets usually see them as part of the family. Puppy classes and socialization are essential for raising a well-meaning dog. They can eat any other high-quality food that any other dog eats. Of course, we recommend a high-quality dog food that contains quite a bit of meat and protein. These dogs are not particularly prone to food allergies, but they can happen. Some dogs are quite active and need a lot of playtime. Others prefer to lounge around. It is usually better to be on the side of too much exercise than too little. Plan on taking your dog on at least one walk a day. Playtime in a backyard may be necessary as well. They are typically smart and eager to please. They are not particularly stubborn or anything of that sort, so they usually take to training well. Because of their intelligence level, they need a bit of mental exercise every day, or they may become destructive. Training is an easy way to do this, so many dogs enjoy it immensely. They do not shed much, but their coats are high-maintenance otherwise. Their wooly coat requires daily brushing from a young age. Luckily, most dogs get used to regular brushing. They typically need a bath at least once a month on top of whenever they get visibly dirty. They will likely need a bath after running through leaves, for instance. Or, at least, a good brushing. Clippings every few months are required, though their faces and paws may need trimming more often. We recommend scheduling them a monthly grooming appointment unless you are willing to learn how to groom them properly at home. Their nails should be trimmed every month at the very least. They need their teeth brushed quite a bit as well. Daily is best. These dogs are particularly prone to dental problems, so brushing is essential. They are not prone to many different health conditions. Minor Conditions. Their coat is somewhat hypoallergenic, although not completely hypoallergenic. This is because they trap more dander than other breeds. If you are an allergy sufferer, make sure you spend a lot of time with your Maltipoo before you bring them home to ensure you are not allergic to them. We will go into more detail about grooming your Maltipoo further on. Color While the breed standard color of a Poodle is white, a Maltese can come in many different colors. This means that your Maltipoo can also come in many different colors and, as they are a designer breed, most likely will be unique in their colorway and design! You Maltese Poodle Mix could be black, blue, grey, brown, cream, silver or white, although the most common colors are a light beige or white. Temperament The Maltese Poodle is a true companion dog who loves to be around people and thrives on human attention. They are very loyal to their owners and will care for you as much as you care for them. That being said, they love all people they meet and will want to be friends with everyone! Fortunately, separation anxiety can be helped with socialization from a young age. The Maltipoo is also a playful dog. Although they do not have a high activity level, they are very intelligent and require mental stimulation. They will love to play with you and have known to be mischievous from time to time! Lifespan The typical life expectancy of a Maltipoo is around 12 to 16 years. Known Health Issues Unfortunately, as with any dog, the Maltese Poodle mix can develop some health issues. They inherit these health problems from their parent breeds and can, therefore, be more susceptible to issues the Maltese and Poodle are. The most common health problems with the Maltipoo are set out below: White Shaker Syndrome — this is a syndrome that is common in small dogs and causes the whole body to shake. It is caused by an inflammation in the brain which is idiopathic. Some owners mistake this for their dog just being cold but if you suspect they are suffering from white shaker syndrome, you should take them to the vets. Patellar Luxation — this is a common condition in smaller dogs and is caused when the patella is not properly aligned. This can cause lameness in the leg or an abnormal gait, sort of like a skip or a hop. Epilepsy — this seizure disorder can be treated with medication. Progressive Retinal Atrophy — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Buying from a reputable breeder will help to reduce health issues in your Maltipoo. You should also watch out for any signs of the issues about and take your pup for regular health checkups. Daily Life Now we have learnt all about the characteristics of a Maltese Poodle Mix, it is time to take a look at what everyday life with one of these pups is really like. Below we cover their food and diet, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. The general rule is 40 calories per pound of body weight per day, which can average out to around calories or one cup of food a day. However, you should always check the bag of the food packet to see the exact amount of that particular food you should be feeding your pup based on their size. It is recommended that you do not feed your Maltese Poodle in one go and instead break up their food into three to four meals a day. The food you give them should be high-quality dry kibble that is formulated for smaller breeds of dog, so you are sure they are getting the correct amount of energy, protein and fat. Your dog will function at his best with enough protein. Without adding any grains, their recipes are created with the assistance of doctors to provide your dog the ideal ratio of protein and fat. Each batch is checked to ensure it meets our high standards, and high quality ingredients are mixed in the USA for quality control. These pups should be getting between 30 to 40 minutes of exercise everyday. This can be split over games, walks and runs to keep them engaged and entertained. Your Maltipoo will also benefit from mental stimulation. Because they love to spend time with you, playing games with you indoors will be their favorite pastime. Family Compatibility The Maltipoo is a pup that adapts to any situation and makes the perfect family pet. A loyal companion, they are also excellent with couples, seniors and individuals. Because they are a little dog, they are also great for apartment and town living and their exercise needs are small they do not require a large yard to run around in. These dogs get on very well with other animals and will do well in a home with other pets. They are easy to train and socialize too, which means they are a good dog to have if you do not have experience with pups. The Maltipoo does well with children, but because of their size they are very vulnerable and delicate. You will need to teach your young children to be careful with this hybrid dog otherwise they could hurt them! The Maltese Poodle Mix is a lap dog that requires a lot of attention and you must ensure you have the time to spend with your Maltipoo before you buy them! They do not do well when they are left alone and like to be around people. When they are left alone for too long they can begin to exhibit destructive behaviors, so you must make sure you have time to curl up with them on the couch or, even better, take them with you wherever you go! Training and Socializing Both the Maltese and the Poodle are intelligent dogs who love to learn. Therefore, the Maltipoo is a dog that is easy to train. You must be patient and consistent with them, but they will pick up basic commands very easily. You should always use positive reinforcement with your Maltese Poodle hybrid. This includes verbal praise and treats. Never use punishment with them. Because they are so devoted to their owners, they will not understand and be hurt and confused, which can lead to destructive behaviors. You should do it from a young age and introduce them to lots of different sounds, sights, places, smells and people. Luckily, this breed of dog love both humans and other pets. Grooming The Maltese Poodle Mix is a generally easy dog to take care of, although they do need to be groomed often. This is because of their beautiful coat! Whether they have the curly coat of a Poodle or the longer coat of a Maltese, you will need to brush their fur almost every day. This is especially important if they have the curlier hair of a Poodle because matting can occur and this can become uncomfortable for your pooch. Their coat will need to be professionally groomed every 6 weeks or so to keep them looking their best. Their ears will also need to be checked and their nails should be clipped by the groomers. Dental hygiene is also important for your doggie to prevent gum disease and dental decay. Try to brush their teeth as often as you can to keep any health problems at bay. Regular grooming from a young age will reinforce the bond you have with your Maltipoo. Maltipoo Breed Traits. There are three ways to make a miniature dog, all of which have a degree of controversy and notable drawbacks. Breeders can add other smaller dogs into the mix, introduce dwarfism genes, or breed from the smallest puppies, or runts of the litter. Mixing with Smaller Breeds One of the methods of breeding a teacup Maltipoo is by breeding the standard Maltipoo with a different, smaller breed. The advantage of this is that it can reduce the risk of puppies developing predisposed health issues by increasing genetic variety. Plus, crossing two breeds is a game of chance. There is no guarantee a micro Maltipoo dog bred this way will look like a Maltipoo. It may instead look more like its other parent breed. Here are some crossbreeds commonly advertised as teacup Maltipoos by breeders. Maltipoo Maltese Mix One way to make a smaller Maltipoo which still matches its name perfectly is by breeding with a particularly small individual from the parent breed. The smallest Maltese can weigh as little as 5 pounds, whereas a Maltipoo born from an average sized Maltese and Toy Poodle could easily weigh more than 10 pounds. But it also increases their chances of inheriting certain predisposed health issues. These include heart abnormalities, liver issues, and luxating patella loose kneecaps. So it makes sense that breeders often crossbreed with the smallest Poodle to create the teacup dog. Toy Poodles are the most popular choice. As with the other mix, a teacup Maltipoo bred this way is more likely to resemble a Poodle. Toy Poodles are intelligent and loving. But they are also at risk of passing down predisposed health issues such as hip dysplasia and eye conditions. Maltipoo Chihuahua Mix Chihuahuas are the smallest recognized dog breed, making them a viable choice for breeding the teacup Maltipoo. Standing at only 5—8 inches tall, their offspring is likely to have the teacup size. Chihuahuas have charming temperaments but can be a bit stubborn, a trait which the Maltipoo mix can inherit. There is a chance a Maltipoo Chihuahua mix will inherit these problems. Bear in mind that a teacup Maltipoo bred using this method may resemble a Chihuahua more than a Maltipoo. Introducing Dwarfism Gene Another way to get teacup Maltipoos is by introducing the dwarfism gene. Dwarfism is a condition that restricts growth, resulting in a dog with a small body and legs. Normally dwarfism occurs due to mutations. But breeders may purposely breed dogs to have it to give them the teacup size. Breeding From Runts Finally, the last method for breeding teacup Maltipoos is by breeding two runts together. A runt is the smallest and least developed member of a litter. Runts are often sickly and more vulnerable than the rest of their littermates. By breeding them together, breeders achieve the teacup-sized dog, especially over a couple of generations. Teacup Maltipoos bred this way have an increased likelihood of developing immune system problems and heart conditions later on in life. Teacup Maltipoo Appearance The appearance of a teacup Maltipoo will depend on the way their small size is created. If a mini Maltipoo is made by mixing a Maltipoo with a smaller breed, they could look more like either parent. Teacup Maltipoos with dwarfism will have shorter legs and larger heads. And those made by breeding runts are most likely to look like smaller versions of the two parent dogs. Mini Maltipoos will be small dogs. Both the Poodle and Maltese parents are known for having beautiful fur, so expect this in your mini version! The best way to predict what your puppy will look like is to take a look at the parents. How Big Are Teacup Maltipoos? Generally, these tiny dogs will grow to be under 10 pounds as adults. The name teacup comes from the tiny size of these pups. So, most mini Maltipoos will be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. But, there will still be variety among individual puppies, depending on how they were bred. The best place to look for a prediction of what your Maltipoo will be like is the parent breeds. This dog is a miniature version of an already mixed breed. So, even standard Maltipoos may be more like a Poodle or a Maltese. In general, these little dogs will be friendly, intelligent, and loyal. The Appeal of Miniature Dogs Teddy bear dogs have been a huge trend in recent years. And the mini Maltipoo fits that bill with its large dark eyes and wonderful soft fur. For some people, the practical aspects of having a tiny dog are also an appeal. Smaller size typically means less exercise is required. They also take up less space, which might suit someone with a small apartment. Small dogs also eat less, and even if they do shed, the amount of visible lost hair is less. Potential Problems The teacup Maltipoo will be prone to the same health issues as a regular Maltipoo. But, there are some other problems linked specifically to the size of this dog. Fragility Miniature dogs like this will have fragile bones and bodies in general. This means they are vulnerable to broken bones, and other serious injuries if they are handled incorrectly. Brain Problems Teacup dogs like the mini Maltipoo are prone to problems with their brain. This problem puts pressure on the brain, causing symptoms such as seizures, blindness, or altered gaits. Surgery or lifelong medication is often the only solution. On top of this, tiny dogs can be more prone to increased stress and poor mental health. These dogs need calm environments to lead the happiest lives possible. Heart and Bladder Defects Their tiny size means that teacup dogs like the mini Maltipoo are also prone to heart disease. Common problems include enlarged heart and dilated cardiomyopathy. Having such tiny organs means that miniature dogs like this can also struggle with incontinence. Their bladders are simply too small to hold on for long periods of time. You should also be aware of and watch out for liver shunts and hypoglycemia low blood sugar. General Care Because of their many potential health issues, a teacup Maltipoo needs a family that can provide plenty of care. They will need a good quality dog food, possible one designed for small breeds, regular exercise, and a calming environment at home to minimise stress. Mini Maltipoos will need regular grooming to keep their fur looking its best. They need plenty of company. But, they should never be left with someone inexperienced, or too young to know how to handle such a delicate little dog. Teacup Maltipoo Puppies Mini Maltipoo puppies will be tiny dogs. So, they need plenty of care and really delicate handling. As small teddy bear dogs are so popular, you might have to pay quite a bit in order to get a puppy. Dogs from puppy mills are more likely to have serious health problems in the future. You can find the healthiest puppy possible by going to a reputable breeder. But as the teacup Maltipoo is not a recognized breed, finding one might be a struggle. Is this true for the Maltese Poodle hybrid? Most pet allergies are due to dander—dead skin flakes—not any particular kind of fur. Low Shedding Breeds Certain breeds like Poodles have less dander and shed less than other breeds. This can be good for people with allergies. The Maltese Poodle cross, like the Poodle, also does not shed much. It is frequently listed as one of the more hypoallergenic dog breeds. So this is all good news for Maltese Poodle mix lovers! Your pup will not shed fur and dander as much as other dog breeds , and could be a good choice if you have allergies. But this is by no means a certainty. Be sure to spend time with Maltipoos in their home environments to see how you react before bringing one of these puppies into your home. Make sure to check their ears regularly for any excess wax. And keep on top of their nails with nail clippers or grinders if needed. Choose a high quality food. Although the Poodle has curly fur and the Maltese has straighter fur, both Poodles and Maltese have long coats. They require weekly grooming. As well as regular baths and trimmings. Are They Good Pets? The Maltese and Poodle mix, is well known as a sweet and loving companion animal. Both Poodles and Maltese dogs are known for their engaging and charming personalities. With the Poodle getting high marks for smarts and the Maltese for affection. Being a mix, your puppy could grow up to be more like her Poodle ancestors. Or more like her Maltese ones. As with any cross breed the outcome is not predictable. So you need to be certain that you love both Poodle and Maltese temperaments before you choose this puppy. Make sure to meet both the Poodle and Maltese parents. And make sure they both have temperaments you would be happy to share your life with. These chasmatic, intelligent little dogs will thrive in an environment where someone is around for much of the day. With owners who are committed to training, socialization and regular exercise. As well as a whole lots of love. You will need to make sure you find a good breeder, that health tests there stock. And would be advised to go for a Miniature rather than Toy mix, as they are less likely to be so small and fragile. Maltipoo personality can be as gorgeous as their appearance, and these lovely little dogs can make wonderful pets. Maltipoo Barking Like many small dogs, Maltipoos have a tendency to bark. There is much you can do to reduce barking and avoid it becoming a problem. Try to ignore your Maltipoo puppy when they bark for attention or because they want you to give them something. Instead, reward your puppy for desirable behaviors such as sitting quietly, or just standing quietly with all four paws on the floor. Training Small Breeds New owners should be aware that Maltese Poodle hybrids can bark more than other dogs. Or introduced very gradually and gently to staying alone. This is not a quick process, so do plan to be around for the first months your pup is with you! Like all dogs, this breed needs good training and socialization from puppyhood on. Start housetraining your puppy right away. Other forms of socialization and training can start early too. The most common behavioral problems you will want to focus on are barking, separation anxiety, and jumping. Socialization will help to avoid any unwanted aggression towards other dogs and people. Exercise Needs To stay happy and healthy, the Maltese and Poodle cross will need regular exercise. Their small size can mean they seem suitable for smaller homes, but even a dog this small needs the opportunity to stretch its legs. Make sure your pup gets outside for a walk, run, or some busy training games, on a daily basis. They might also enjoy swimming! Do be aware that, extra small toy breeds can have issues with fragile bones, which can affect their safety when exercising. You can read more about this in the health section below. Health Issues There is a wide belief that cross bred dogs are automatically more healthy than pure bred dogs. Regular mixing of genes will definitely make our dogs healthier as a group, in the long run. But a first generation cross like a Maltipoo may be at risk of inheriting health problems from both its parents. A Maltese Poodle mix has the potential to inherit health problems from both or either parent. Make sure the parents have had all the usual health tests recommended for their breed, before purchasing a pup. March 15, Table of Contents Maltipoos — Adorable designer pups Maltipoos are dogs that result from crossing a Miniature or Toy Poodle with a Maltese. The Maltipoo has yet to be recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club and other organizations across the world. Most dogs have a fluffy and wool-like coat, though, which is one of the features they are most appreciated for. How big does a Maltipoo get? This is a relatively small breed. Adults get to a height that ranges from 10 to 12 inches, depending on their gender and genetic inheritance. Most have a weight between 10 and 20 pounds, also depending on their gender, whether they were spayed or neutered, and if their parents were smaller or larger. If you are looking for an especially small Maltipoo, you should pick a female and also ask your breeder for a cross of two smaller parents. If you are looking for a larger dog however, make sure to pick a male puppies from parents that are on the larger side. Genetics are strong when it comes to size! Temperament The best thing about a Maltipoo is that it usually inherits the personality of its parents. However, like any other breed, whether mixed or not, this one needs to be socialized as early as possible. Another Maltipoo personality trait that dog owners love is that they can be quite affectionate. They do tend to suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for many hours during the day, so if you tend to be away from home for more than 10 hours on a daily basis, this might not be the right dog for you. Are Maltipoos easy to potty train? Most Maltipoos are very easy to train, especially if some of the training was done by the breeder. Praise and repetitive routines offer the best results when it comes to potty training a Maltipoo. For more information on house training your Maltipoo, talk to an experienced trainer. Is a Maltipoo a good dog? Most dog parents seem to agree that Maltipoos make not good, but great dogs. On top of everything, a Maltipoo maintains their puppy temperament even in their senior years, which can be very refreshing. Are Maltipoos barkers? Some Maltipoos can cause problems if they are adopted from inexperienced or irresponsible breeders. All puppies have to be trained to some extent in order to maintain good behavior, especially in relation to other animals and people. As we previously mentioned, they do not do well when they spend a lot of time alone. Unfortunately, that can be a problem for most pet owners unless they live in a house and have a yard where the dog can have some fun while they are away. On the other hand, they cannot be considered a hypoallergenic dog breed. They do shed several times a year, and their coat should be groomed every months depending on whether it is curly or not. Some Maltipoos have fluffy or curly hair around their eyes, so the latter can sometimes get irritated. If you ever try to cut some of the fur around the eyes, make sure to cover them with your hand first. Others prefer a lamb cut or a fancier style such as the Miami cut. Do Maltipoos have health problems? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is yes.

boxer puppies for sale ocala fl - Some Goldendoodles sleeping more than others may just lack opportunities for physical and mental stimulation. One way to get your dog more mental stimulation is to do fun training exercises like the ones in the Brain Training for Dogs program! As Goldendoodles enter their twilight years, they tend to sleep more hours on average. As their bodies slow down and deal with the effects of wear and tear through the years, senior dogs will require more rest throughout the day. Arthritis, hip dysplasia , cognitive dysfunction, and other age-related health issues that affect senior Goldendoodles can cause them to revert to the sleeping habits that they had while a puppy. They will nap on and off throughout the day. Some can sleep for a total of hours per day. Senior Goldendoodles tend to sleep more because they tire out more easily. Also, bigger dogs spend more time dozing compared to their smaller counterparts. When it comes to knowing the right Goldendoodle sleep schedule, experts generally point out that the bathroom habits of dogs are the most important consideration. When and how frequently your Goldendoodle relieves themself can affect their sleep schedule. Photo courtesy of lucyythedoodle on Instagram. When dogs were domesticated, many slept with their masters. Lying close together created stronger bonds between dogs and their owners. It was also a way to keep warm as the heat of their bodies combined. As social creatures, Goldendoodles love being around their humans even when sleeping. However, there are pros and cons related to co-sleeping with your Goldendoodle. Pros: Gives both dog and human a sense of safety, security, and comfort. Increases the amount of quality time spent with your dog. Eases anxiety. Health concerns of humans can be aggravated. A common example is experiencing allergies. Dogs carry dust, dander, and other pathogens. Risk of disease and parasite transmission from dog to human and vice versa. The difference between a dog and human sleep cycles can significantly affect the quality of sleep for both humans and their canine buddies. As you might have gathered, a Goldendoodle sleeping a lot is not usually a cause for concern. Even when they are in deep sleep, their protective instincts are always on high alert thus even the slightest sound could easily wake them up. However, these should return to normal with time. Excessive sleep can be a red flag for serious health issues such as diabetes , hearing loss, hypothyroidism, or canine depression to name a few. Goldendoodles, in their first weeks of life, will sleep anytime they are not nursing. As newborns, they tend to nurse every 2 hours taking naps in between feeds. Even so, they shut their eyes as they nurse, so essentially, they sleep all through. As they grow, they start being more active during the day. Goldendoodle puppies will stay awake for about 2 to 4 hours from 3 weeks of age. For example, they will play and explore for a few minutes, sleep for a few hours, play again, sleep, and the cycle continues. From two months of age, Goldendoodle puppies will sleep for 18 to 20 hours a day. They will have about 4 to 6 hours of active time during the day, whereby they will play and explore in short spurts. Like other puppies, Goldendoodle puppies need a lot of time to rest and recharge from short playtimes. They tend to sleep longer stretches at night, but they get up to have potty breaks and stretches. In the earlier months, your Goldendoodle puppy may wake up more than once for potty breaks, but with consistent training, they will sleep through the night before they hit five months. Older puppies between 6 and 12 months will sleep an average of 15 hours a day. They tend to have more energy to expend at this stage, spending more time playing and exploring. On this note, they will sleep longer stretches of up to 9 hours at night with short naps during the day. Since Goldendoodle puppies are energetic, they use up all their energy during the day playing and interacting. But, they tend to nap multiple times to recharge between sessions and reenergize for their next play session. An adult Goldendoodle will sleep for 14 hours on average, but the hours increase as they age. A study by the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found out that middle-aged and older dogs sleep more during the day than puppies. Middle-aged dogs and older dogs tend to take more naps during the day as their energy levels drop significantly as they grow older. That means they need more rest than younger ones to recharge and pump up for playtimes. Even so, Goldendoodles tend to be more energetic than most other dogs; therefore, they may sleep fewer hours. But, how much they sleep depends on several factors varying from dog to dog and from household to the other. Your dog will have a hard time falling asleep. According to a Journal of Veterinary Behavior study, dogs that were fed more frequently took fewer naps during the day, but those naps lasted longer. Dogs fed twice a day slept earlier at night but woke up earlier, showing a decreased total time at night. This study shows that a higher frequency in feeding affects the length of naps and, ultimately, sleep quality. If your Goldendoodle is going through a mental or emotional issue, it may have difficulty trying to sleep. This is why it is essential to engage your dogs mentally, as much as you do physically. Ensuring your dog is mentally stimulated will help it settle down quickly, rest more and sleep better. Your dog needs emotional support to help it cope with everything around the home. Your dog requires adequate love and affection, which contributes significantly to how well it settles down and rests. If your dog does not get adequate training each day, it may have a hard time trying to sleep. Exercising helps to expend built-up energy in dogs to help them calm down and rest more. It is important to note that if your dog has physical issues or complications, it may not sleep as effectively as a healthy dog. However, this can go the other way round, and your dog may need to sleep more than usual, owing to its physical incapabilities. Puppies and dogs in their first few years may need to sleep more than adult, active dogs. On the same note, senior dogs may need more sleep as their energy levels drop significantly as they age. The Environment The environment your Goldendoodle stays in can make or break its sleep pattern. If your home is noisy and full of distractions, your dog may find it hard to sleep and rest comfortably. This can highly affect how long your dog sleeps and how much time your dog needs to fall asleep. You ought to create a healthy lifestyle for your dog by ensuring your dog eats a healthy diet. Provide healthy food and clean water throughout the day to ensure your dog gets all its essential nutrients. Additionally, ensure your dog gets adequate exercise every day, essential for expending energy and mental stimulation. With regular exercise, your dog will have an easier time settling down and falling asleep. Stay on top of their health needs by scheduling regular visits to the vet and engaging them often to meet their emotional needs. How long your Goldendoodle holds their bladder depends on their age. Younger Goldendoodles below six months of age can hold their bladder for 1 to 3 hours. Puppies older than six months can hold their bladder for up to 6 hours. Goldendoodles above two years can hold their bladder between 6 to 8 hours, while those above seven years can hold between 4 to 6 hours. As they grow older, the time reduces significantly, going as little as 2 hours for dogs between 11 to 12 years. Goldendoodles love to be close to their family members and enjoy cuddling. They like sleeping in your bed or in your room at night to keep the connection going. Goldendoodles thrive on bond and will appreciate the extra time with you sleeping in your bed or next to you. Can Goldendoodles Sleep Outside? It is not advisable to leave your dog to sleep outside. They are generally indoor dogs and do not adapt well to temperature changes that happen at night. Additionally, the coat is not suited for the outdoors. The best approach is setting up a comfortable dog bed inside the house. Goldendoodles love cozy spaces, and setting up one for yours will significantly impact the quality of sleep. With a comfy dog bed indoors, your Goldendoodle will have an easier time falling asleep. Why Do Goldendoodles Sleep On Their Backs Goldendoodles like to sleep on their backs as a way to help them breathe better as they sleep. Sleeping on the back can also be an indication of your dog feeling hot while they sleep. Exposing their belly helps to regulate body temperature considering the belly has most of their sweat glands. Although the amount and quality of sleep vary according to age and health, most Goldendoodles sleep ab average of 12 to 14 hours. There might be days or even weeks when it seems to regress, but as long as you stay calm and stick to the training schedule and daily routine, your doodle puppy will thrive. Remember, the younger your pup is, the shorter its attention span and the less it understands. A lot of the earliest work involves planting seeds for the future and maintaining that consistent routine. Many goldendoodles respond best to one or more of the following methods: Positive Reinforcement Your number one tool as a puppy parent is positive reinforcement. Scolding and punishment will make it fear you, which might garner very short-term results but will ultimately lead to long-term problems like destructive behavior, biting and excessive barking. Use a mixture of praise and toys as your primary rewards, with food used as big rewards and treats very occasionally. Clicker Training Many puppies respond best to clicker training, and many professionals use it. It combines positive reinforcement with a handheld clicker that you press whenever you reward your pet for following a command or behaving well. Very quickly, it starts associating the click with a reward, until the clicker itself becomes the reward and a treat is no longer required. Animals are territorial by nature, and giving your pup a little island of its own in your home is a great way to prevent unwanted behaviors. Remember, the crate is not a punishment. However, like every breed, they have their character quirks. Below is a list of the main issues doodle owners encounter and how to approach them. Jumping All dogs have the potential to get excited and jump up on people when they meet or greet them, but this can be scary for strangers and children. Teach your doodle puppy that it only gets a reward if it sits when greeted and this behavior will eventually become second nature. Stealing Food Every dog loves to eat. A clicker can be particularly good for this behavior. Mouthing and Biting Biting is natural for dogs, and they might use it as a way to get your attention in addition to it being a sign of aggression. Check out our training program to find out more. If they are dehydrated they also may not be able to sleep. A healthy diet can give them a satisfied feeling that helps them relax better when that time comes to go to bed. The mental and emotional health of the Goldendoodle can affect how they sleep, including how much sleep they get. It is important to tire out the Goldendoodle mentally just like they are physically exercised. Without that mental stimulation, they may find it hard to settle down. The personality of the individual dog will determine how much sleep they get. Goldendoodles that are more energetic and lively will need less, with dogs that are more relaxed possibly getting more sleep. The physical health of a Goldendoodle can impact how much sleep they need. If they are unhealthy or suffer from illness or injury this can cause them to need more sleep than normal. Goldendoodles that are healthy and strong may require less than the guideline. Younger dogs and puppies may require more sleep, just as a senior or elderly dog. Dogs of ages in between these life stages may require less. The home environment with which the goldendoodle lives in can make or break the sleep habits of the family dog. Households that are noisy, filled with distractions or riddled with stress can make it hard for any dog to have healthy sleep habits. Similar to the home life of a goldendoodle, their stress level can create unhealthy sleep habits, including getting less sleep than normal. Some dogs are naturally more nervous than others and in this way they may have a hard time settling down to sleep. How active they are during the day will factor into the amount of sleep the goldendoodle dog will get. If a goldendoodle receives too much exercise they may sleep more than usual. These factors can change from day to day with each dog being as unique as their home environment. Families that have a goldendoodle may never experience some of these issues because this breed is rather easy going and laid back. Emotionally, physically and mentally Lexie is healthy and curious which aides in her sleep at the end of the day. Thankfully she balances life pretty well as this point. What are some ways to promote healthy sleep habits for my goldendoodle? There are numerous ways to promote healthy sleep habits for a Goldendoodle. Diet Exercise Physical, Emotional and Mental Health Diet is by far the most important component of any healthy lifestyle. With ample nutritious food and adequate amounts of clean water, a Goldendoodle will unwind easier when sleep time comes. If the goldendoodle receives enough healthy exercise that matches their needs they will be ready to rest when they settle in. Finding activities that they enjoy doing and spending time with them connecting while exercising is a great way for the whole family to ensure a healthy nights sleep for everyone. Attending to the physical, mental and emotional health and needs of the fur baby in the family will ensure that they sleep good and are healthy. Goldendoodles are easy going by nature so their family must make conscious efforts to ensure that their needs are met. Attending to their physical health with regular vet visits is a perfect starting point. Stimulating their mind will keep it sharp, and sharing affection and offering plenty of time for socializing will keep them emotionally healthy. Will the Goldendoodle take naps or only sleep at night? The goldendoodle as well as other dog breeds will sleep throughout the day and night. This depends on the factors listed above but each dog is different in how they like to sleep. Some days they may nap five times, other days they may nap twice and sometimes still they will not nap at all. The guideline for Goldendoodles is twelve to fourteen hours depending on the dog. This guideline of time will usually be broken up into little naps or breaks to recharge their batteries before continuing on with their day. One quick nap on the couch, another outside in the sunshine, and yet another still after dinner in the dog bed. Providing multiple rest spots in the house where the goldendoodle is welcome can promote more naps throughout the day. Sleep is also a great time and place to bond and share some reconnection time with the family fur baby. This time can help gently ease the way for even a difficult sleeper to settle down. In Conclusion Everyone needs sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle for good health and a long life. The goldendoodle dog breed sleeps an average of twelve to fourteen hours in a twenty four hour period. Each dog will have their own unique need for sleep that keeps them functioning at their prime. The factors that make or break a good nights rest for a goldendoodle are easy to manage with a little planning and forethought, as well as some naps as needed. If for some reason the goldendoodle has trouble sleeping or getting enough rest, sharing a bed with them can make all the difference in the world, so pull up a pillow at let them hog the bed! Of course, this varies depending on the individual puppy, but in general, goldendoodles need more sleep than most other breeds. How many hours a day do goldendoodle puppies sleep on average? Goldendoodle puppies can be active and rambunctious, but they also need plenty of sleep in order to grow and thrive. On average goldendoodle puppies will sleep for about 17 hours a day , including both deep sleep, or REM sleep when dreams occur as well as short light nap intervals spread out over the course of a day. This is important because goldendoodles are developing rapidly during the puppy stage and proper sleep allows them to use this time to learn and grow mentally, physically, and emotionally. That being said, goldendoodles can have different energy levels throughout their life span so their total amount of time sleeping can vary depending on their unique needs. What are some of the things that can affect how much sleep a goldendoodle puppy needs? Young puppies usually require more rest than adult goldendoodles to restore energy used in physical and mental growth, so they may need up to 18 hours of sleep each day. Diet also plays an important role since puppies fed high-energy meals may experience bursts of wide-awake enthusiasm while those consuming fewer calories tend to show signs of drowsiness or sleepiness soon after eating. Finally, goldendoodle puppies will adjust their sleeping patterns based on environmental cues; too much noise or exposure to light can increase wakefulness and reduce the overall amount of sleep both at night and during the day. Why is it important for goldendoodle puppies to get enough sleep? Inadequate sleep can even cause goldendoodle puppies to show signs of anxiety, which may result in troublesome behaviors such as excessive barking or destructive chewing. On the other hand, goldendoodles that get enough rest are typically more relaxed and better-behaved around people, making them much easier to train and bond with. At any stage of their lives, goldendoodles need a good amount of quality sleep in order to stay healthy, happy and fulfilled. Goldendoodle puppies require just as much sleep as any other breed of dog — generally, hours per day. A goldendoodle puppy that is not getting enough sleep could show signs such as general lethargy, difficulty focusing, weight loss or sudden outbursts of energy followed by an extended period of sleeping. Goldendoodle puppies require patience and understanding so that their sleep schedule can be maintained. Creating a solid routine using consistent meal times and exercise opportunities can help goldendoodle puppies get the rest they need to remain energetic and happy. From taking them on regular walks before bedtime to creating a comfortable, dedicated spot in the house just for them, there are many things that you can do. Also make sure that snacks are not provided right before bed, as this will lead to restlessness and barking throughout the night. With these tips and more, you can help make sure that both you and your goldendoodle pup get some much needed rest every night! Related posts:. Growing takes a lot of energy too, so they need to sleep and conserve some energy for the proper development of their immune system, central nervous system, brain, and muscles. Whether you are raising a Goldendoodle pup or any other breed of dog, this guide will help you and your new pet establish good sleeping habits early on. Here are some tips to help your puppy nap throughout the day: Recognize overtired behavior. When your Goldendoodle puppy is clearly ready for a nap but would rather play, take them to their crate, bed, or another sleeping place. Signs may include bad behavior or trying to cuddle. Nodding their head is a red flag too. Show them where to sleep. Follow a schedule. Plan naps into the day, like after walks and playtime. Goldendoodle puppies may need to nap every hour or so. Naps may range from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Take them outside when they wake up. Take them out to go potty as soon as they wake up to help prevent accidents. Tips for Bedtime Bedtime can be tough for the whole family, especially the first few nights with your new Goldendoodle puppy. But establishing a Goldendoodle puppy schedule will help ensure they are sleepy for bedtime and can sleep all through the night over time, with a lot of patience. Here are some tips to help your puppy and you sleep better at night: Start a routine. Make the crate inviting. Crate training is a crucial part of having puppy Golden Doodles, and it needs to start from the very first night home. Instead of an expensive dog bed that will probably get chewed up, line the bottom of the crate with cheap towels or fleece blankets. Keeping the crate inside your bedroom is best, so you can hear them whining, at least while your puppy is new and has a tiny bladder. Keep their sleeping area dark and quiet. A cover on the crate can help keep light out. If you watch TV in bed and have the puppy in your room, keep the volume low. You want ideal conditions to help your puppy fall — and stay — asleep. Be prepared to wake up. This is normal, and your puppy will eventually grow big enough to sleep through the night without a potty break. The first few nights may be difficult. Your Goldendoodle puppy may cry, whine, and bark to get out of the crate and join you in bed. Goldendoodle Puppy Sleep Schedule Obviously, you will develop a routine that works best for you, your family, and your Goldendoodle puppy. Give them breakfast. Take them outside to go potty right after eating. Spend minutes playing, walking, or socializing your Goldendoodle puppy. Time for a nap. Take your puppy outside as soon as they wake up. Time for another potty break when your puppy finishes eating their lunch. Up to an hour of playtime and exploring. Another potty break as soon as the puppy wakes up. More playtime. Your puppy may need another nap, then another potty break. Evening Dinner time. Make sure to feed your puppy dinner several hours before bed. After dinner, it is an excellent time for a long walk. One last potty break, then time for bed. When Should I Worry? Sometimes, lethargy can be a symptom that something is wrong. If your Goldendoodle puppy displays any other signs alongside sleeping excessively, you should call the vet right away. Puppies can get very sick, very fast. Be on the lookout for any of these symptoms: Vomiting. Puppies, Adults, Seniors Goldendoodle Newborns This stage of life is very short and full of lots of shut-eye! Newborns generally nurse every 2 hours but even while doing so they will have their eyes shut and look as though they are eating in their sleep. As they grow they will slowly start to spend more time awake. Around 3 weeks old they will have around hours of active time a day broken up into small spurts of energy and exploring their world. Goldendoodle Puppies Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. We only recommend high-quality products that are used and recommended by real owners. If you use these links to buy something we earn a small commission. Puppies are quickly growing and changing. They need plenty of sleep to fuel and recharge their growing bodies. From months old Goldendoodle puppies will generally sleep around hours in a hour period. This includes sleeping at night and daytime naps. Your puppy will sleep in longer stretches at night, but will still need to get up to relieve its small bladder and stretch. He may even have a burst of energy and seem like he wants to play. With some patience and guidance, your puppy can learn to sleep through the night by 4 months old, maybe even sooner. Older puppies from around months old will sleep about hours throughout a 24 hour period. At this point, they should be more active and inquisitive during the day and will be better about sleeping through the night in a hour stretches. They will also take multiple naps during the day, as well as times of rest when they appear to be just lying around, but somewhat alert as well as high energy awake time when they will want to play and train. Goldendoodle puppies will generally sleep through the night by about 4 months old, but it can range from 8 or 9 weeks old all the way through 6 months old. Some puppies may also go through a sleep regression when going through a growth spurt or teething. Towards the end of this article, we will discuss those in the heading sleep problems and solutions. Fun Fact: Senior dogs, as well as puppies, tend to twitch more in their sleep! This is due to a part of their brain called the Pons which regulates muscles and keeps them still while they sleep. Goldendoodle Adults Your adult Goldendoodle will normally sleep around hours in a 24hr period, but more as he ages. In this study, researchers found that older and middle-aged dogs slept more during the day than young adult dogs. This was because they took more naps, not because their naps were longer. They tend to run out of energy and need to rest more often than the younger group. Older and middle-aged dogs also slept more at night than younger dogs because they had long stretches of sleep at night waking up later and woke up fewer times during the night. When I asked Goldendoodle owners what their Goldendoodles behavior was like they covered all the ranges of this hr span. A big factor was how active and attentive the owners were. Goldendoodles tend to be pretty high energy and love to be kept busy with games and exercise. Because they may have a bit more energy than other breeds, they may sleep a little less than other breeds as well. Some owners I talked to said that if their Goldendoodles are left home alone all day they tend to just sleep since there is no one there to engage them with play or give them a reason to exercise. So as you can see their sleep schedule greatly depend on the kinds of habits you develop for your dog. If your dog is sleeping a lot maybe try and steal his bed to see how he reacts! Senior Goldendoodle Your Goldendoodle is considered a senior sometime between 7 and 10 years old. At this time you will probably start to see your dog slowly increasing the amount of time it is resting and sleeping. Senior Goldendoodle will sleep hrs a day on average as they get to be years old and older they could be sleeping up to 18 hrs a day. At an older age, your Goldendoodles sleep patterns may change as well.
