Newborn Pugs Pug pups begin their life fully reliant on their mother. They are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. A coat should be present, with the color being commonly either fawn or black. Fawn pups may experience their coat color lightening or darkening in shade as they mature. Their eyes and ears will be closed at birth and will remain this way for a while yet. Unable to support their own body weight, they will crawl on their stomach to get around. Baby Pugs are also not able to regulate their temperature, meaning that it is very important to stay warm. They will commonly clump together in piles, sharing body heat. Finally, the mother will also have to help her pups urinate and defecate as they are unable to do so by themselves. She does this by licking the anal and genital areas. One Week Old Baby Pug During the first week of life, baby Pug pups will either be nursing off their mother or sleeping. As they are still blind and deaf at this stage, they will not bother exploring or moving around more than necessary, spending most of their time lying close to their littermates and mother. Their weight should steadily increase every day. At the end of their first week of life, they should have doubled their birth weight, or at least come close. The owners of the pups will need to keep an eye on their breathing as brachycephalic breeds, such as the Pug, commonly have breathing issues. Two Week Old Baby Pug As we hit two weeks of age, we see a key development in the puppies growth; their eyes will open for the very first time! To begin with, their eye color will be blue, but will likely transition into a dark brown as they mature. Owners need to check over their eyes to ensure there are no issues, as this breed can be susceptible to ocular problems. At this stage, they may be a little more curious about their surroundings due to their newfound eyesight. However, they will still primarily be focused on sleeping and nursing. Their weight should continue to rise steadily over the coming weeks. By this time, the ears of the baby Pug pups will have opened. They will be able to hear for the first time and will begin reacting to more sounds. Their eyesight will also have developed significantly, with them being able to recognize their mother, littermates, and objects placed in their den. Along with their newfound perception of the world, they should now be able to support their own body weight and stand up. They may be able to walk, albeit with an unsteady gait. With all the interesting sights and sounds around them, they will likely be a lot more inquisitive of their surroundings. They may explore the den as much as their wobbly legs will carry them. Gaining Independence On top of all this, they should now be able to urinate and defecate on their own, without any stimulation from their mother. We can also expect to see the start of the early socialization period. The puppies will begin developing behaviors and social skills for the first time, taking part in play with their littermates. Owners of the puppies should take advantage of this period to help them get used to human touch and presence. They will be establishing relationships with their mother, den mates, and people. Training can begin at this early stage. Despite the fact that their brains still have a lot of developing to do, a start can still be made on teaching them basic crate and potty training. They will also likely be much more mobile on their feet. Little adventures will be common and the puppies will play together often. Soft, easy to eat puppy food can be given. They will continue to rise in weight and keep learning social skills, with more complex behaviors being shown. He walks so well on leash because he is so attentive to his human. Contrary to popular belief, cats and dogs can actually be best friends! With a little bit of forethought and patience, your French Bulldog is sure to do great around cats. You want your Frenchie to be able to respond and behave in any situation to reduce the risk of injury. Realistic expectations Have realistic expectations for the first few meetings. Just like us humans, it takes time for pets to develop a friendship. Be patient. Picking the proper location for your pets to meet for their first time is crucial. Just your cat and dog. The last thing you want to do when introducing your French Bulldog to any cat is to immediately place them a room together with no rules! Keep the two separated at first; let them adjust to their new environment. Once you have the cat and dog going about their own business, as usual, they are ready for their first meeting. The first meeting The first meeting should be brief. Around ten minutes is a good guideline. Reward your dog for calm behavior with praise and treats. Let this place be known to the other person so that either of you can grab the pet you are responsible for and get out if needed. Claude was around 14 weeks old when we first got him, and using a crate was an essential part of training. To introduce him to Poopie that cat, we placed him in his crate, and then let her wander into the room. Her first reaction was shock. Her hackles went up, and she stalked around the room. But after a few minutes her curiosity got the better of her, and she went up to the crate to sniff and check him. It was time to let him out. Before doing so, we placed our cat up on a table, so she had the higher ground and was in a position of strength. Claude ran out and wanted to play with her — he was a puppy after all — and our cat looked at him with a mix of displeasure and still the curiosity. They are now great friends. After about an hour, she got bored of sitting on the table, and jumped down. He chased her around the kitchen, she gave him a swipe, and he seemed to know his place in the pecking order after that! Mainly this was with our dog. For example, if he jumped up at the cat, we would be firm with him. But if he was relaxed and gentle with her, we praised him and gave him a treat. That let him learn that good behaviour is to be rewarded. Give your cat plenty of attention Poopie the cat was used to having her own space, so having Claude suddenly on the scene did put her nose out of joint — and understandably so. Watch for problems and warning signals And lastly, look out for any signs that trouble could be brewing. For example, is your Frenchie exhibiting signs of aggression, or is your cat looking stressed. Cats can urinate indoors when they feel threatened, or go off their food completely. Either of them could also start lunging, swiping, scratching and biting at each other. If this happens which it rarely did for us thankfully , then give them both a break for 24 hours and keep them separate for a while before trying again. What to do after the introduction and longer term I believe a lot of our success was due to the fact that our Frenchie was smaller than our cat when the introduction happened. That must have meant that she felt less threatened than she would have done if he was a fully-grown Frenchie coming into her territory. This is definitely the key to keeping our French Bulldog temperament and behavior ok with our cat. This gives her a feeding place where she can relax and eat without our Frenchie wolfing down her food before she gets a chance. French bulldogs are greedy and will eat anything that they find. It is so important to do this, because cats are very territorial, and French bulldogs are very greedy, so it could be a potential flashpoint. They might even end up sharing a bed Our pets have now known each other for over 2 years. And yes, they will even share a bed themselves together they get along so well! Somewhere between nine and fourteen months of age the adult coat will grow in. At this transition time the coat will need lots of attention in order to keep the length. Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age. The doodle with a hair coat has the same wonderful temperament and personality as the doodle with the non shedding coat but is not good for a person with allergies or for a family that has chosen the doodle because of his non-shedding qualities. It is hard to get a brush through the curls if you leave it too long. Without this regular brushing right down to the skin mats will form next to the skin. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars. Grooming For Every Doodle No matter what the doodle coat there is grooming required. This can either be done by an interested family member or your groomer. Ears Fur grows out of the ears of a labradoodle. It begins its journey deep in the ear canal. If ears are not keep clean and dry dirt and wax can lead to severe ear infections. You can tell when the doggie has hot ears that there is a problem and a trip to the vet will be in order. Some doodles love to dig and have very thick fur in their ears. This means it could be a good idea to pluck the fur from deep in the ear. It is not difficult to take tweezers or better still a hemostat and pluck out the fur on a regular basis. I must say I almost swooned the first time I did it myself but it does get easier. Unless you are an expert it is a two person job, one to hold the dog and promise treats, the other to pluck. Your vet can recommend an ear drying powder which will keep the ears in good health. Of course, your groomer will do the ear plucking for you. If you take your dog every six weeks she should be fine.
