Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Jack-A-Poos are at the top of the spectrum for energy and needing exercise. This is good news to combat their tendency for weight gain. They are versatile at either apartment or house lifestyles, due to their smaller size. They do enjoy time outside for mental and physical stimulation, and long walks and games agility, catch, etc. That smaller size could also make them vulnerable to wild predators. Their sense of adventure and wanderlust could send them off running into unfamiliar territory, as well. Brushing their teeth a few times a week is also a good idea to promote good dental health. You can ask your vet to show you how to do any of these tasks. Dividing the food into two or three meals during the day, as opposed to unlimited access, will help your dog not to overeat. You may need to take them outside to go to the bathroom before that, especially if they are very young or very old. Every dog is different with how quickly they need to go to the bathroom, but the more vigorous exercise should wait till after the safety period. Colors include white, black, brown, tan, gray, and blue—and coats can be a mix of these colors. Noses are always black, and eyes are always brown. Grooming is fairly low-maintenance, only necessitating brushing once a week and bathing as needed. Professional grooming every so often may help the dog look their best, too. In general, Jack-A-Poos are pretty tolerant to both heat and cold, but there are a few differences. Poodles do not have an undercoat, which means they tolerate heat more easily and cold less easily. Jack Russell Terriers do have an undercoat. Many small dogs do well with coats or sweaters when it is extra cold or snowy in the winter, so that may be helpful for your Jack-A-Poo, too. As with all dogs, Jack-A-Poos will do best if they have early socialization and training. This will emphasize the loving, loyal traits of your dog, and it can minimize the hunting ancestry. With early socialization, Jack-A-Poos can be great with children and other pets. However, without that early socialization, they may become aggressive. However, you may want to try Jack Russell Terrier or Poodle breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Knowing the parents can help you better understand what a Jackapoo is like. Miniature Poodles Toy Poodle Poodles come in three varieties: standard, miniature, and toy. As such, Poodles are fantastic sniffers. However, nowadays Miniature Poodles are bred for companionship and while they enjoy sniffing and working, they also enjoy the company of their owners. Poodles are extremely intelligent, active, and fast learners, and many Poodle owners attest to their intelligence by describing them as intuitive and easy to train. People used Jack Russells for hunting small games like rabbits, foxes, and birds. Like Poodles, the Jack Russell is also energetic and dislikes sitting still for too long. Due to their hunting instinct, they love to stay engaged and require plenty of mental enrichment throughout the week. However, putting in the time to give a Jack Russell menta stimulation and games is essential, otherwise they may become destructive think chewing your shoes or gnawing on your baseboards. Energetic Jackapoos are very active, which is a no-brainer considering the parent dogs are also highly energetic. If you plan to give your Jackapoo puppy a bunch of toys and expect them to be happy, the Jackapoo is not the right dog for you. Jackapoos need lots of attention and active participation from their owners. Jackapoos are ideal for active families who plan to take them on walks throughout the day. At least 60 minutes is ideal, along with training and mental stimulation. Social Jackpoodles are great family dogs. Intelligent As both Jack Russell Terriers and Mini Poodles are highly intelligent, the Jackapoo is one smart cookie The Jackapoo is quick on the uptake, easily learning new tricks and family routines, and even sniffing out friends and foes. Surprisingly, this small pooch makes a great guard dog. Their bold bark and unwavering confidence are sure to scare off any unwanted visitors. Stubborn Despite being intelligent and easy to train Jackapoos also have a stubborn streak, which means you need to have plenty of patience with them. With the right training, you can teach your Jackapoo to listen to your commands and—in most cases—listen to you. Loyal Jackapoo dogs are known for their unwavering loyalty to their owners. These loving pups form strong bonds with their human family members and will go to great lengths to protect them. They are highly affectionate and thrive on attention, and can be anxious when you leave. Jackapoos are also highly intuitive and can sense when their owners are feeling down or stressed, providing them with comfort and support. Dogs dig for a variety of reasons, but the biggest is for stress relief and boredom. You can easily correct this behavior by ensuring you provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Both Poodles and Jack Russell Terriers enjoy swimming, so if you want to mix things up, take your Jackapoo for a swim. Appearance Colors Prepare to be charmed by the colorful colors of the Jackapoo puppy! These playful pups come in a variety of colors, including black, white, grey, blue, brown, tan, and even mixed shades. With muscular bodies inherited from their Jack Russell Terrier parent and a coat that resembles their Poodle parent, these pups are truly one-of-a-kind. Coat A Jackapoos coat depends on genetics, but typically, they have a wiry coat, giving them a scruffy and cute appearance. However, they can also have wavy and curly coats, thanks to their Poodle genetics. Height and weight Weighing between 13 to 25 pounds and growing to a height of about 10 to 16 inches, Jackapoos are the perfect size for any home. A daily brush is ideal, but at the very least, it should be brushed once every two to three days. This will help to distribute the natural oils in their coat, keeping it shiny and healthy. This can prevent common issues such as ear infections, tooth decay, and overgrown nails that can cause discomfort to your furry friend. This can be done with a warm cotton cloth and a cleaning solution recommended by your vet or groomer. Another crucial aspect of maintenance is dental care. Long nails can cause pain when walking or running and can even lead to joint problems over time. Health problems Jackapoos are susceptible to the same health problems as their parent breeds. Here are some health problems known to Jackapoos: Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition that affects the hip joint and can lead to arthritis and lameness in Jackapoo dogs. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help prevent this condition, but if your dog is diagnosed with hip dysplasia, medication, surgery, or other treatment options may be necessary. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can cause seizures in Jackapoo dogs. Treatment for hypothyroidism involves hormone replacement therapy. Patellar luxation is a condition in which the kneecap pops out of place, causing pain and limping in Jackapoo dogs. Mild cases may not require treatment, but severe cases may require surgery. Skin disease can affect Jackapoo dogs, causing itching, redness, and other symptoms. Causes of skin disease can vary, including allergies, parasites, or infections. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause of the skin disease. Cataracts can develop in Jackapoo dogs, causing cloudy or blurred vision. Treatment options may include medication, surgery, or other management strategies, depending on the severity of the cataracts. The cost depends on factors like parent breed history and whether the puppy is dewormed, vaccinated, spayed, or chipped. You can cut these costs with things like pet insurance, although, the jury is still out on whether pet insurance actually saves money in the end. Where to find Jackapoo puppies Breeders Being that Jackapoos are hard to find, finding a reputable breeder can be even more challenging. Start by researching breeders online and reading reviews from previous buyers. A reputable breeder will prioritize the health and welfare of their dogs over profit. Oftentimes, breeders will take back the dog if the family they sold it to can no longer care for it. Jackapoos need lots of stimulation, both physical and mental, in order to be happy. Aside from that, they also need someone who can put in the time to care for their non-shedding coat, which requires plenty of brushing and trips to the groomers. But instead of straining to meet the other dogs are chase the deer which would make any JRT huntsman proud , he stops and looks up at me! I was worried about him being too feisty or energetic but he seems to be very Poodle-ly in personality rare for this mix by what I've been reading and quickly accepts others as alpha. He does okay with young children, opting for the "You guys have fun, I'll just sit back and watch. White, black, brown, gray, blue, or a mix of these colors Suitable for: Active families, those looking for a low-shedding dog Temperament: Happy intelligent, energetic, gentle, loyal, affectionate, stubborn The Jack a Poo is also known as the Jackadoodle. This is a dog that needs a lot of exercise, and it adores being outdoors. These dogs can also be yappy which can be a concern if you live in an apartment or have close neighbors. Overall, Jack a Poos make great family dogs as they love kids and can get along with other pets. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. This breed is more hypoallergenic than many others which is great for people with allergies. This is an active and playful dog that needs a lot of exercise. On top of being energetic, a Jack a Poo is also a gentle and affectionate dog that loves to cuddle. This dog gets along great with kids as well as with other dogs and even cats if introduced properly. This dog needs frequent exercise and loves playing outdoors. This is not an aggressive dog although it can be stubborn. To train this breed, you must have patience and perseverance. In fact, if you put a Jack a Poo in a backyard with a couple of kids, the dog will think it died and went to heaven, it will have that much fun! Are These Dogs Good for Families? This dog will love everyone in the family, from the smallest child to the eldest. This dog is well-suited for an active family that likes to get out and go. This dog may look at a small pet like a hamster or rat as prey, so caution is advised if you have such a pet. The same holds true for birds. This dog can become jealous if a new dog is brought into the family. You can feed this dog dry kibble or wet dog food, as long as the food is of good quality. This dog can either be walked on a leash several times a day or allowed to run free in a fenced yard or both if possible. Another great way to exercise a Jack a Poo is to sign up for dog agility training. Miniature Poodles are known for being highly trainable and obedient while the more laid-back Jack Russell is rather stubborn at times. A Jack a Poo learns quickly and is eager to please. This dog thrives on positive reinforcement so plan on giving your dog lots of praise and the occasional treat during your training sessions. If your dog starts showing his stubborn side, ignore him and wait it out! Like other breeds, a jack a Poo needs to have its ears cleaned out regularly to prevent infection. This can be done using a warm washcloth with a little soap and water. You should only bathe a Jack a Poo when the dog is very dirty because over-bathing can lead to dry, irritated skin. A Jack a Poo also needs to have his nails trimmed every couple of weeks. Serious Conditions. Jackapoo puppies A Working History The Jackpoo has been being produced accidentally for decades, but has only recent taken off as a designer dog breed. Their history to now is really the origins of their ancestral breeds. Jack Russell Terriers were bred in England in the mids. Bred to be used as hunting dogs, mostly for fox, rabbit and other small game. Quick enough to keep up with other hunting breeds, but small and sturdy enough to flush and capture small game. The Poodle has a longer history, dating back over years. The Standard Poodle originated in Germany, where it was bred to be a retrieving dog for duck hunters. The Standard Poodle, a full-sized dog, was bred down to the companion Miniature Poodle. The first Toy Poodle , an even smaller version, was bred in America in the early 20th century. What Do They Look Like? Like any mixed-breed dog, there will be some variance in Jackapoo appearance from dog to dog. Your Jackapoo puppy could inherit more characteristics of the Poodle, or more of the Jack Russell Terrier. This is typically a small dog, weighing around lbs and measuring inches. Their adult size will depend a little on whether it was bred from a Miniature Poodle or a Toy Poodle. Coat color is usually black, brown, tan or white, or a mix of multiple shades. Some longer tufts of hair around the face and snout are common. Do Jackapoos Shed A Lot? Did you know that the Jackapoo is often considered hypoallergenic? However, many allergy sufferers report being able to spend more time around low-shedding breeds, like the Jackapoo! They will however need regular grooming and clipping to keep their fur coats tidy and mat-free! Temperament Traits Generally speaking, the Jackapoo will inherit the intelligence and pride of the Poodle, and the active, hardworking nature of the Jack Russell. Some break the mould and bear a very strong resemblance to one parent over the other. But what results is always an active, high-energy crossbreed that loves to have a job to do. Jackapoos require frequent exercise, and love to play outside. They also can be big barkers, if not trained otherwise. Jackapoos are not typically aggressive, so long as they are trained and socialized from a young age. The Jack Russell Terrier can be somewhat stubborn or aggressive with other animals, so again, socialization is very important. They can be a bit noisy, but tend not to push or jump up. And are likely to be too small to knock over a kid too. Training The trainability of the Jackapoo depends on which parent breed comes through stronger. The Poodle is famous for its obedience and trainability, while the Jack Russell can have a bit more of a stubborn side. Both parent breeds are extremely intelligent, so training usually goes well. Some Jackapoos can have a stubborn, prideful streak, which can sometimes complicate training plans. Patience might be required. Your Jackapoo should be trained frequently, using positive reinforcement training. If need be, you can hire a professional trainer — but most Jackapoos can be trained at home. The Jack Russell in your Jackapoo might cause the dog to bark frequently. This can usually be addressed through training, but nonetheless is something to keep in mind. Socialization and Exercise This is a very high energy dog! Your Jackapoo will need plenty of exercise every day. Socialization is very important for all dogs, but particularly for the Jackapoo. If they are not exposed to plenty of other animals, dogs, children and strangers, the Jackapoo can become stubborn or even aggressive. Health Fortunately, most of the common health concerns of the Jackapoo are mild. Dry skin, allergies, and ear infections are common in this breed, but easily treatable. Concerns like deafness, patellar luxation, arthritis, cataracts, thyroid disease and others are also possible be less frequently seen. They have a life expectancy of years. Ask the breeder to show you health test certificates for both parents, and where possible meet them both too. The puppies should be lively and alert, and the parents should be friendly and have an obvious strong bond with the breeder. Jackapoos are exceptionally intelligent dogs that are also sociable, alert, playful, highly energetic, and easy to train. Are you looking for more information about the designer dog breed Jackapoo because you want to add one to your family? Perhaps you already own this cuddly Jack Russell Poodle mix and want to know a bit more about it. In any case, read on; this guide has all the information you need about this cute small dog. What is a Jack-a-Poo? The resulting mixed dog breed is not recognized by the AKC or any other Canine Club and its exact origins are also unclear. Hopefully someday, with their efforts, owners can enjoy the same registration privileges that purebred dogs enjoy. The Jackapoo might have been created with a view of having a sturdy and intelligent dog with a less tenacious personality and a non-shedding coat. Poodle-mixes like the Labradoodle and Golden Doodle were among the first poodle mixed breed or hybrid or designer dog breeds to be created. The Labradoodle Poodle-Labrador Retriever mix was estimated to have been created in the s and was found to have high trainability combined with a non-shedding coat. These features made other doodle breeds Poodle mixed popular with people allergic to dog dander. The Jackapoo also came into existence due to the same reasons: potential pet parents were looking to adopt or buy smaller dogs that could be easily trained and were suitable for people with pet allergies. The Jackapoo fit the bill perfectly. A bit about the Jack Russell Terrier breed Jack Russell Terriers were bred to be working dogs and to hunt pesky vermin on farms and in houses. They even flushed out badgers, foxes, and groundhogs from their hiding holes and dens for hunters. The Jack Russell Terrier is an ancient breed and is estimated to have existed for more than years. They are predominantly white with tan, brown, or black patches. A bit about the Poodle breed Poodles might have been first bred in Germany since the word Poodle comes from the German word Pudel puddle. However, Poodles also have Spaniel ancestry as well as French water dog Barbet blood in them. Today, the Poodle breed is considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. Canine genetics is quite a complex science, so no one can predict for sure how big an F1- first generation Jackapoo will get. As such, Jack-a-poo is a small and compact-sized dog breed since the parent breeds Jack Russell Terrier and Miniature or Toy Poodle are both quite small. How big will a Jackapoo puppy get? A full-grown Jackadoodle could reach a height of 25 to 38 cm 9. Most reach maturity between 8 to .Jackapoo coat type Jackapoos could have a scruffy, wavy, or curly coat. The coat can come in various combinations like white, tan, black, silver, and blue, all mixed together or in patches. Their Poodle parent could also give them coat colours like red, brown, silver, and apricot. Are Jackadoodles hypoallergenic? How much grooming does a Jackapoo need? Jackapoos have fairly low-shedding coats since both parent breeds are also low-shedding. You will still need to brush your Jackadoodle at least times a week. Jackadoodles that inherit the Poodle-like coat might also need professional grooming every few months. Does a Jackapoo shed? Jackapoos are mostly low-to-no shedding dogs. If your pet inherits the curly and tight coat like its Poodle parent, then it might not shed at all. However, if it inherits the Jack Russell Terrier type coat, then it might shed moderately seasonally. If allergies are an issue you might find Jackapoos from a wire-haired JRT and a poodle will shed less than those from smooth-coated Jack Russell lineage. Similarly, F1b generation Jackadoodles will often shed less than their first-generation counterparts. Jackadoodles make excellent pets as they are super cute, highly energetic, and also very intelligent. They make great family dogs for all ages but they also need to be kept active. You will need to give your Jackadoodle a job to do because, without activity, it could get quite destructive. Jackapoos might be small dogs but they have high exercise needs. These high-energy dogs also need consistent positive training and handling from the very beginning. Without training and exercise, they can get mouthy and could misbehave. Although Jackapoos do well with older children, they should not be around very young kids or infants. After all; they have high prey drives and are great opportunists. Small children carrying food could be prime targets for these dogs. Jackadoodles can make good pets for elderly people or people with limited mobility. However, there should be someone around to take them for daily walks and also for training the dog. Jack-a-poos do well on farms and ranches but if you live in an urban or suburban dwelling, then a fenced yard is a must for keeping your Jackapoo safe. Remember: Jackadoodles are diggers and could easily dig under a fence, so make sure you secure the bottom part of the fence as well. Jackapoos will be happy in apartments too, but they do need some extra space to run and play. They are also excellent at jumping and can easily jump over 4 feet 1. This makes them excellent for agility and tracking activities. Do Jackapoos bark a lot? Jackapoos bark a lot and they can be quite loud! Sometimes, they might bark even while they are playing. Mostly, they bark if someone is simply passing by. This quality makes them good watchdogs but can be annoying to the neighbours. So, you might want to train your dog to only bark on cue. Are Jack-a-Poos intelligent dogs? Jackapoos are very intelligent dogs given the intelligence of both parent breeds. They are also very determined and stubborn and using these traits, a Jackapoo will surely get what it wants. That is why consistent, positive reinforcement-based training is very important from the very beginning. Otherwise, your little dog might develop some frustrating behaviours. How Much Does a Jackapoo Cost? Avoid buying from puppy mills and backyard breeders since the pups born under these circumstances are more likely to have health and temperament issues. What is the Best Food for a Jackapoo? A correct and balanced diet for your Jack Russell Poodle mix can result in an active and healthy pet with a shiny coat. It is also important to keep your Jackadoodle active. Most small dog breeds like Jackapoos only need around calories per day. Your dog food label will tell you exactly how many calories there are in each cup of food, so you can feed your pet accordingly. Finding the best dog food for your Jackapoo can take some trial and error. You can always get recommendations from breeders and vets but if the food is not agreeing with your small dog or if it refuses to eat it, then do consult a vet nutritionist and consider a change. Here are some general tips about feeding a Jackapoo: Feed your puppy the same food it was eating at the breeder. This is important to avoid gastric upsets. Puppies run, play, and burn a lot of energy so they need at least 4 meals a day. For adult Jackapoos, 2 meals a day are usually adequate. Establish a strict feeding and potty schedule and follow it. Avoid foods containing GMO ingredients, preservatives, meat byproducts, fillers, and artificial colours and flavours. Some Jackadoodles are very sensitive to wheat, corn, soy, and dairy. Many are sensitive to certain proteins chicken, fish, peas, and pork. In such a case, you might want to feed special diets or even vet-prescribed diets. A raw dog food diet of red meat or lamb with vegetables and meaty bones is usually a good choice for most Jackapoos. Health and Lifespan of Jackapoos Most Jackapoos are healthy and hardy. The Jack Russell Terrier breed does not have too many health issues or any known common health concerns unless they are poorly bred. The Poodle breed, however, is known for certain genetic issues. Therefore, some common health concerns are known to crop up in Jackapoos from time to time. These are: Deafness Arthritis — generally seen in senior dogs Cataracts — also age-related.

Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Michigan? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T.

The Labrador Retriever is also the most popular purebred dog in America for the 21st straight year. More than twice as many Labs were registered than any other breed making it a likely leader for many years to come. In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: The ten reasons that I am giving for children to have a dog are not listed in order of importance. All of us have different characteristics which we find more important than others. Every reason I list, however, is important to the childhood of your son or daughter. Dogs help children to be more physically fit. All dogs, regardless of breed, need to be walked. Children who take their dogs for regularly scheduled walks tend to exercise more than those who have no reason to get up off the couch and leave the TV. The Journal of Physical Activity and Health concluded that people who walk their dogs generally walk about an hour longer per day than non-dog walkers. In this age where over one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, exercise is no longer merely a choice of leisure activity, it is a necessity Center for Disease Control and Prevention, .What more pleasurable way for a child to exercise than to run and play with an adored dog? All dogs need exercise regardless of size, so children include dogs when they are running or playing casually—not just on regularly scheduled walks. One of the reasons that I suggest retrievers when parents ask about what kind of dog is best is simply the name. We strive for the REAL Labrador Retriever which is one that is not only correct in proper temperament but also a dog that is correct in structure as the written breed standard describes. Labradors are not supposed to be weedy, lanky individuals with pointy heads and equally objectionable are short, fat cumbersome dogs that cannot withstand the vigor's of working or partaking in a family outing. A Labrador Retriever was bred to be a gentleman's hunting dog, a family companion and a breed that can adapt to any situation with ease. They are NOT and never where meant to be a speed machine or a bouncy, over-energized four legged meat dog. Lord knows there are many other breeds out there bred specifically for those reasons. The Labrador should NOT be one of them. True to the correct Labrador temperament, you will find that our dogs are low-key inside the home but when it comes to performing a certain task they are trained for, they turn on like a light-switch. Sponsor Meet Osborne Osborne is a 1-year-old yellow lab mix currently weighing in at 75 pounds. Although Osborne is past his heathen puppy days, he is still an active dog and will likely continue to be active well into his adult years. This is not a dog for someone whose idea of active is a stroll to the mailbox. Osborne is best with no cats and small woodland creatures. If you run a chipmunk sanctuary, this is not your dog. Kids over the age of 10 would be best as they are old enough to defend against happy young dog play antics. For the same reason, small dogs are a no go and he should have companions 40 pounds and up who love to play and are capable of hard core play action. Osborne loves playing with toys, especially toys that move. Osborne would be great for a family that loves training a dog in things such as flyball and agility. Osborne would not be a good fit for apartment, condo, or townhouse living and a fenced yard is a must unless you are one of those people who run 10 miles a day, rain or shine. Our main website, www. All known information about an individual dog is provided in its listing. We do our best to provide accurate information, but adopters should understand that each home is different and the dog may behave differently in a new home. Dogs are creatures of their environment and you help make the dog what it will be. Homes considering adopting a puppy must be prepared for 1. Flexible schedules for potty training. Puppies can only hold it for one hour per month of age i. Crate training until the puppy is at least one year old to prevent chewing on inappropriate things when you can't supervise. The more positive and varying experiences as a puppy the better, both in and out of your home. Puppy behavior and life stages are equivalent to a human toddler. It takes at least a full year to have a calmer, well-adjusted dog. Patience is required and when your dog's behavior is a positive experience for you and those around you, your patience will be rewarded ten-fold, for years to come. Please do not consider adopting a puppy if you have not thoroughly thought through the pros and cons of having one. So many people end up returning them after months because they didn't realize the amount of work involved in raising a puppy. Patience, appropriate toys, socialization, and obedience training are all musts. All are time-consuming and can be expensive. All dogs require supervision with children and obedience training. Adopters that want to have good dogs must be prepared to put the time and effort into training a dog. Any dog requires work and effort, but a well trained, well-socialized dog is more than worth the effort to get them there. Considering Osborne for adoption? These hybrids were the ancestors of the Labrador Retriever, and they were owned and used by fishermen in dragging nets filled with fish out of the sea to the boats. Not only that, but the Labrador Retrievers were also trained to recover fish that got away from the nets or from fishing hooks. The dogs continued to function in that capacity in Newfoundland until the news and deeds of the breed got to the Earl of Malmesbury in the early s, and he brought them to England, where they were used for shooting sports. This breed is fast in movement, most especially when they are running. In addition to their agility and strength, Labrador Retrievers are homely, easy-going, outgoing, intelligent, affectionate and friendly to humans and other animals also. Dog lovers who have children are always keen on getting this breed because of its endearing and non-aggressive nature towards children most especially. Due to its origin and history, this breed is not a breed that sits in a place for a long time. It is a breed that enjoys roaming and hunting, and can also thrive in both warm and cold weather. The Labrador Retriever breed is full of exuberance, boisterousness, and energy, and as a result of this, it needs a lot of training and exercise to keep it active and agile at all times. Therefore, the Labrador Retriever needs as much as minutes worth of training and exercises daily. You need to pay attention to its teeth and nails. Make sure the teeth are brushed from time to time and nails clipped frequently. Our Labrador Retriever puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. Santa Margarita, CA .Hi Julia, Everyday I say that I am going to sit down and write to update you, and everyday just keeps getting away from me. I honestly have no idea how you kept up with soooooo many pups at once. We have had him just over two weeks and I have not gotten a stitch of work done. Thank goodness I have my own business and work for myself or I would have had to fire me! I just figured to heck with it, he is only going to be little once and I want to take advantage of this time and enjoy it and use it to train him as much as possible. I know it will pay off in the end. Before I start bragging and carrying on about him, I would just like to preface it with.He has settled in so well from the very beginning. He was soooo good in the kennel. We never had any whining or anything. Housebreaking is going very well. His record for no accidents in the house so far is two whole days and he goes to the door when he has to go now. He absolutely seems to understand what "Potty" means and what he is suppose to do. I took him to the vet right away after he came home and the vet said he was absolutely perfect I already knew that! He had a fecal exam done , it was of course negative. A week later at nine weeks he had his vaccines and the Dr. I found the trainer that I had used for my other dogs. I had started with him almost 15 years ago he had since moved to LA. Anyway, he still comes out this way for a few clients so he agreed to work with us again. I am so happy about that because I already know and use his basic methods, I just need some brushing up and re-training. He started last week and he has progressed so well already.I have progressed too, I had forgotten more than I like to admit. The only thing that I am questioning is if I am feeding him too much??? He was ten weeks yesterday and weighs exactly 16 pounds. He is still just strictly on the Natures Domain. I didn't want to change too much of anything at the beginning. I am feeding him one cup of food, three times a day at six hour intervals. He looks great to me, but of course acts like he could eat double what I am feeding him. I am trying really hard not to look into those big brown eyes and give in and give him more! The doctor had a formula but thought that you would be more of an expert in that area than he would since you raise them so he wants me to check with you just to be sure. I would appreciate your thoughts on this and how I will know when and how much to increase. I am sending you some pictures of him I took at nine weeks. I hope they come thru to you OK. I even set up a little Thanksgiving photo shoot for him.My kids think I am over the top, but I don't care, he is too cute to not be over the top! Anyway, he is just a joy, we are sooooooo happy with him. We want to thank you over and over again! Talk to you soon!
These pint-sized pooches vary in appearance and size depending on which parent's traits they take on the most. In general, a full-grown Pomapoo dog weighs 5—15 pounds. But if they have inherited more Pom, they could be teeny-tiny and look like a fluffy fox. If they've got oodles of poodle in their DNA, they could don a furry, curly coat, be a bit larger, and inherit an air of dignity. Either way, Pomapoos have moderate grooming needs to keep their coats from matting. These small dogs are good candidates for apartment living , and while they don't require a ton of exercise, they are bidding for a standing invitation to sit on your lap. While both Pomeranians and poodles are popular breeds and have both been favored by royalty for centuries , the Pomeranian-poodle mix is a relatively new mixed breed that's been around since the late s. Pomapoos tend to be a versatile match for a variety of pet owners, from families to retirees, and mesh well with most living situations. Appearance Because they're a mixed breed, Pomapoos can vary quite a bit in appearance depending on which combo of adorable traits their parents pass on. In general, these small dogs range between 5—15 pounds, with male Pomapoos on the larger side. Frills around their necks and chests make them look like proud little lions, and they have dark-but-bright almond-shaped eyes. Poodles, on the other hand, have a curly low-allergen coat , square build, dark oval eyes with an intelligent gaze, and, overall, an elegant demeanor. To put it another way, one Pomapoo could be defined more by the animated appearance of a Pomeranian, while another could take on the distinguished traits of a toy poodle. Or, you could get a flamboyant mix of both. Pomapoos' coats can also vary wildly in terms of color, texture, and patterns. These pups may come in shades of red, brown, black, cream, brindle, or a seemingly endless number of color combinations. Usually, though, their coats tend to be dense and wavy, Burch says. Because their hair can be prone to matting, a daily brushing routine can help keep their coats tangle-free in between trips to the groomer. And while no dog is technically hypoallergenic , Pomapoos may be a low-allergen dog if they inherit the toy poodle coat. Temperament Poodles are fast learners and whip smart. Poms are active, inquisitive, and extroverted. Combine the two breeds, and the result is often a Pomapoo that's clever and snuggly, who absolutely loves to be the center of attention and is eager to learn new tricks. Like their Pomeranian parents, these vivacious dogs have a knack for entertaining their beloved humans and crave play time. But because of their tiny stature and delicate frame, they may not be a good fit for families with young, rough-housing children who may mistakenly injure these little guys. Always supervise kiddos when playing with any pup. Pomapoos bond tightly with their families and tend to be very loving, Burch says. Gentle and eager-to-please, the Pomapoo tends to be a stellar student when it comes to training. Living Needs Pomapoos can do excellent in apartments or tiny homes. While they'll get playful streaks, their exercise needs are on the low end of the scale. These dogs aren't much for outdoor adventures they don't fare well in extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold. A daily walk or about 30 minutes of exercise a day should suit their needs, Burch says. Because they bond with their family, they'll do best in a home where they get plenty of attention and have some dedicated playtime with interactive toys and puzzle games. It's also a good idea to outfit your house with doggy stairs or a ramp to help them climb up on your couch. It'll keep these tiny puppers from injuring their joints from jumping on and off furniture. Care These darling dogs do need regular grooming and a good teeth brushing routine to keep them in tip-top shape, says Pam Nichols, DVM, president of the American Animal Hospital Association. Grooming will depend on what kind of coat your Pomapoo has, but generally speaking you'll want to plan on brushing your dog on a daily basis; Pomapoos have thick coats that can mat easily. On the plus side, Pomapoos with poodle-like coats tend to be allergy-friendly. But those curls do require a lot of TLC—and the daily brushing can stave off matting. Pomeranians, on the flip side, have soft, dense undercoats and long, straight outer coats. And while they look high-maintenance, brushing can be an easy task because the pups are so small. As with other poodle mixes, consistent trips to the groomer every 6—8 weeks for a Pomapoo haircut should keep your dog's coat looking and feeling good and make it easier to manage between grooming appointments. That's because they can have enamel defects, an irregular bite, and periodontal disease at a young age, Nichols says. It's best to brush your dog's teeth every day, using circular and up-and-down motions to remove plaque and tartar. Poultry-flavored toothpastes and positive reinforcement treats and head pats as rewards! When it comes to training, Pomapoos are quick learners and they'll enjoy training sessions because it's an opportunity to be the center of attention. Arm yourself with lots of treats to make short training sessions productive and fun. Some top training priorities for Pomapoos should be helping them stay calm and refrain from barking , Nichols says. As with all breeds, exercise patience and use positive reinforcement during training. These tiny dogs have short little legs and don't require a ton of exercise a nice walk around the neighborhood plus some playtime will suffice. Be mindful that Pomapoos can develop a cough during exercise or strenuous activity that is associated with tracheal collapse , which occurs when the cartilaginous rings of the trachea weaken, Nichols says. Health The Pomapoo lifespan is 12—15 years, and this mixed breed tends to be healthy. But like all breeds, they can be disproportionately affected by some health problems. Pomapoos are prone to luxating patellas , or dislocated kneecaps, which is something that's inherited from both the toy poodle and Pomeranian parents, Burch says. Epilepsy is also prevalent in Pomapoos, Burch says, and the disorder that causes seizures often requires long-term medication. Also, as Pomapoos age, they are prone to developing cataracts , which can eventually lead to vision loss , Burch says. It's important to make sure you're bringing home a healthy, ethically bred Pomapoo. Because she's a new "designer" hybrid dog, her high demand can mean some breeders operate without the dogs' health in mind. To ensure you're working with an ethical Pomapoo breeder, look out for these puppy mill red flags : A breeder offers to ship a puppy. It's difficult to find contact information on the breeder's website. The kennel produces multiple breeds of dogs. The breeder doesn't let you meet the puppy's parents or siblings. While it may be hard to believe, today's spunky and pint-sized Poms can be traced back to burly and strong Arctic sled dogs. Their name, Pomeranians, is a nod to where they originated—an area in northeastern Europe that's part of Poland and Germany today. In the late s, Queen Victoria of England became enamored with the breed on a trip to Florence, Italy, and she brought back several Poms to Britain. Over time, the dogs were downsized from about 20—30 pounds to their current toy size, something that the American Pomeranian Club credits to Queen Victoria. The Pomapoos' other parent, the people-pleasing poodle, is often associated with France. The breed was a favorite of Louis XVI. But poodles were originally bred as duck hunters in Germany. Fun Facts This teddy bear-like dog has some cute nicknames. You may also hear these pups referred to as Pompoo or poopom. The Pomapoo's parents have a long and fascinating history. For instance, at least a dozen dogs were on board when the Titanic sank in ; among the survivors were two Pomeranians. As far as poodles, King Louis XVI of France was quite a fan of the breed , and the dogs were given ornate haircuts and carried around like trophies. Because they're a mixed breed dog, Pomapoo puppies—even from the same litter—can look completely different with different coat colors, patterns, and textures. Was this page helpful? Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Pomapoos are prone to weight gain, and they have moderate energy levels. One walk per day should suffice. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth daily, as small breeds are prone to dental issues. Be sure to start training early and instill good habits. Use the positive reinforcement technique. Be stern but loving. It will pay off with a well mannered dog. Small dogs have small bladders and may require more frequent potty breaks. Pomapoo Feeding An ideal Pomapoo diet should be formulated for a small breed with moderate energy. They have a tendency to gain weight if they are overfed, so you should stick to a regular feeding schedule and not leave food out during the day. Two to three small meals per day is recommended. The main colors of Pomapoos are brown, black, white, red, fawn, and sable. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. They usually have short to medium length coats and are light shedders. A light brush every few days should be enough. Always have fresh water available for your pup if they travel with you. Pomapoo Children And Other Pets Because the Pomapoo is a small dog, they can be easily injured by overly excited children. Pomapoos are friendly and very loving with children who know how to interact gently. Always err on the side of caution and never leave young children unattended with any dog, under any circumstance. When it comes to other pets, Pomapoos can get along with other animals quite well if they are introduced slowly and calmly, and early socialization will help this go smoothly. Pompoos do not like isolation, so multiple dog homes just might be ideal. Remember to protect Pomapoos in public from larger dogs. Learn more about Pomapoos by learning about their Pomeranian and Poodle parents. Pomapoo Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed specific rescue for Pomapoos because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Pomeranian or Poodle breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Pomapoo rescue and puppies Also known as the Pooranian, Pompoo and Pomeroodle, Pomeranian Poodle mix appearance and temperament can vary from dog to dog. They tend to be better suited to families with older kids due to their fragile bodies and defensive responses to accidental injury. Pomapoo History Mixed breeds have been around for as long as purebred dogs. And since designer dogs are essentially just first generation mixed breeds, they really are not anything new. However, the mixing of two distinct breeds to create a new dog type is something that has gained popularity within the last 20 years or so. The Toy Poodle is an offshoot of the basic Poodle breed that has been recognized since the s. The Poodle was developed as a canine to hunt waterfowl, like many of the oldest canines. They were selectively bred to create smaller versions of the larger Poodle, and this is where we get the Toy Poodle from. So it is not its own distinct breed, just a tiny version of the Standard Poodle. The Pomeranian is a toy dog breed that originated in the s from the German Spitz canine. The dogs were originally larger and closer in resemblance to the German Spitz, used to protect livestock and herd sheep. However, Queen Victoria owned a small Pomeranian and the toy version of the dog became quite popular. The much smaller Pomeranians are now the most common. Over the last 20 years, ownership of Poms has increased substantially, making the breed one of the most popular in the United States. Pomeranians have a narrow muzzle, small face, and small ears that sit high on the head and stand up straight. Toy Poodles have longer and more pointed muzzles with small faces, and the ears are long and flop along the side of the head. Pomapoos will often have floppy ears as well, but they are a bit smaller than those of a Poodle. Pomapoo adults, like other types of designer dogs, can have a mixed appearance. Attributes come from either the Toy Poodle or Pomeranian parent, which means they vary a fair bit. What we do know for sure, is they are small! Pomapoo Size When it comes to size, Pomeranians are only about 6 to 7 inches high and 3 to 7 pounds. They weigh about 6 to 9 pounds. So your Toy Pomapoo full grown will be anywhere from 6 to 10 inches high and 3 to 9 pounds. Basically, your pup will be a toy sized one, just like its parents. A Teacup Pomapoo is a small version of the Pomapoo. Bred from runts of the litter or by mixing another smaller breed. They are incredibly cute and portable, but we recommend you avoid these exceptionally tiny varieties. Both teacup Poodles and teacup Pomeranians come with a lot of health issues, not just potential temperament problems. Tiny dogs can act more aggressively than larger ones. But socialization will help to reduce the chances of this. So what does the Pomapoo coat look like? Well, it really can resemble that of the Pom or the Poodle, or you might see a mixture. The Pomeranian although usually tan, comes in a lot of colors. As does the Poodle. Your pup could potentially have any of these, or a cute mixture! The Pomeranian has a soft undercoat covered by more textured hair, and it has a remarkable fluff to it. The Toy Poodle has a thick, dense, and curly coat that is often kept trimmed close to the body. Poodles are famously low shedding. Unfortunately, the cute little Pomapoo is likely to also be a shedder. And they are not hypoallergenic. Grooming and Haircuts Regardless of which parent your Pomapoo dog takes after, you will need to invest in some grooming. Most of the dogs will have a hybrid coat that requires brushing with a slicker brush if the hair is more curly and a pin brush if it is straight. Brushing every day is wise. Additionally, you should think about a Pomapoo haircut every few months to reduce some of the grooming and shedding headaches. Puppy, lion, and teddy bear cuts are all common varieties to consider and will cut down on Pomapoo shedding. Keep in mind that the cuts do require the expertise of a groomer, and this can substantially raise your overall Pomapoo grooming costs. Pomapoo Temperament and Activity Level Pomapoos are smart, loyal and trainable. They do sometimes have a bit of a stubborn streak, and the dogs are known for their tight bond with family members. Since they are intelligent dogs, they need to take part in exercise and other activities that keep them engaged. An hour of exercise, at a minimum, is required, and games like fetch should be encouraged during exercise sessions. Your Pomapoo is likely to be active, like the Pomeranian and Toy Poodle with daily exercise needs of about an hour. You can expect to see some loyalty and intelligence as well. You should know that Toy Poodles are excellent family dogs. However, Pomeranians will often favor a single family member. Are They Good Family Pets? This cute little Pomeranian Poodle mix can fit well into some families. They are loyal, loving and intelligent. But they are also very small. This makes them not ideal with families with tiny children who accidentally be rough, or trip over them. Kids over the age of 12 should do fine with supervision. Just remember to give your pup space, and to not let them get over tired. Training your Pomeranian Poodle mix Small dogs can typically take a little longer to potty train. This is in part due to the small bladder size. But with perseverance and a good routine they will get there in the end. Like any other intelligent, confident dog they will benefit hugely from positive reinforcement training. Set them up to win, make training rewarding and it will be a fun and bonding experience for you both. You can even have fun teaching them tricks! Exercise These small dogs are still pretty lively, and need regular walks and plenty of play time. They can be taught to fetch and even to take part in dog sports like agility, just like their larger counterparts. You will however need to be careful, as with their small stature they can be vulnerable to accidents. Pomapoo Health To ensure your Pomapoo is as healthy as possible, make sure each parent is health tested for the conditions relevant to their breed. If they are a second generation mix from Pomapoo parents, then they need to both be checked for all of them. With older dogs you may or may not have a history to go on. They could have come from a marriage breakdown or the sad departure of an owner, or been rejected due to temperament issues. And reputable centers will help you to select a dog that is a good fit for you and your family. Pomapoo Puppies Finding a designer dog breeder is not difficult, but you do need to make sure that you find a reputable one. Before committing to a pup, make sure any Pomapoo breeders you consider can supply the full veterinary records for the mother and father. A lineage should be supplied as well, and ideally, the breeder should be more than happy to supply DNA test records. This type of testing will show whether or not the breeding dogs have genes for hereditary diseases. Eye, bone, dental, hair, or gastrointestinal concerns are particularly relevant with this mix. You will notice higher costs if the breeder supplies full medical records and DNA tests for the mother and father. It is well worth the cost knowing that your new furry pup is more likely to be healthy. Life Span Did You Know? These little dogs are smart and loving with playful, affectionate, and charming personalities. As a developing breed, the Pomapoo may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are recognized by other dog registries. A Pomapoo is a combination of two very cuddly and affectionate companion breeds, so it comes as no surprise that they are also cuddly, affectionate, and loving dogs that thrive on attention. As long as they have been properly socialized, they are social and friendly with children, other dogs, and other pets. They will even tend to warm up to strangers once introduced, especially if it means getting more attention and affection. They do tend to alert bark, which can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Pomapoos are highly adaptable dogs. They tend to do well in apartments as well as larger homes. Although they are fluffy, their small size means they may need to bundle up with some winter dog products to stay warm when out on walks when the temperatures drop. Because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Pomapoo include patellar luxation , epilepsy, cataracts, and tracheal collapse. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pomapoo is an intelligent dog that picks up on things quickly, is eager to please, and thrives on praise and positive reward. They can be a little bit stubborn at times, but as long as training is kept consistent and positive, they tend to do well with owners of all experience levels. Some of the benefits of puppy training classes include strengthening your bond, reinforcing training, socialization, and more. Either way, a Pomapoo will require a lot of grooming just like their parent breeds. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Pomapoo is more prone to developing dental diseases, which makes good dental care for dogs early and throughout their life even more important. Daily brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste or daily use of an enzyme toothpaste, in addition to cleanings at the vet, is ideal. A Pomapoo may be energetic when they play and have bursts of higher energy, but they sit in a low to moderate range and will tire themselves out quickly. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this little dog. They will likely be up for more if you are because they love spending time with you. A fully-grown Pomapoo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Pomapoos generally live for years on average. Although Pomapoo is the most common, this hybrid breed is also sometimes called a Pompoo, Pooranian, or Pomerdoodle. Featured Pomapoo Article. You have your heart set on a Pomeranian whereas another family member wants a Poodle. How do you find a balance? By getting a Pomapoo! The Pomapoo — also known as a Pomdoodle — is a clever mixed breed dog obtained by crossing a Toy Pomeranian with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The result is an affectionate hybrid little dog that is smart, sweet, and highly affectionate. Read on to find out more about the adorable Pomapoo! What is a Pomapoo? Pomapoo is a designer or hybrid dog that has captured the creative interests of breeders and dog lovers alike. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact origins of the breed but it is believed that these cute designer dogs might have been around for almost 2 decades now. It is also believed that the breed might have originated in the United States. Pomeranian The development of the breed can be attributed to the Labradoodle — the first designer dog breed created by crossing a Poodle with a Labrador Retriever. The Labradoodle became immensely popular thanks to its high trainability and intelligence. Smaller cross-breed dogs became popular after the Labradoodle. This may have prompted breeders to cross small-sized dogs like the Toy Pomeranian with Toy or Miniature Poodle resulting in the adorable Pomapoo. Physical Attributes of Pomapoos How big is a full-grown Pomapoo? The Pomapoo is a small dog measuring between 8 and 12 inches .The way your Pomapoo puppy turns out depends on several factors including complicated canine genetics. For example, some Pomapoos might inherit the tight curly coats of the Poodle. Others may have a double coat like the Pomeranian which is thick, soft, and tightly packed with hair. Your pet might have a cute smile like the Poodle or a foxlike appearance like the Pomeranian. Likewise, your Pomapoo puppy could inherit different coat colours such as white, black, red, merle, blue, silver, tan, cream, orange, sable, apricot, brown, or grey. It could also be bi-coloured like the Poodle such as black and white. In any case, the Pomapoo is known for its enchanting teddy bear-like appearance. Their versatile and compact bodies also make them easy to transport anywhere with their humans. Pomapoo Temperament and Personality The Pomapoo may be a small dog but it has a big personality. It is known for unique traits which are a mixture of the Pomeranian and Poodle traits. One thing is for sure: these little dogs are unique and they do unique things! Some might spin around when excited, others might hide their food in different locations. All these traits go a long way in making the charming, hearty, and intelligent Pomapoos excellent companion animals. Most Pomapoos are affectionate dogs but they tend to only bond with one person. That special human is everything to the little dog. Of course, your pet will shower its love equally on all members but it will prefer doing things with that special individual. Being small, they do not need too much exercise — they can get most of the exercise they need indoors. Remember that any dog, without activity, is likely to get bored, depressed and, worse, destructive. You certainly do not want that with your small pet. So a daily walk or two around the block is necessary. Pomapoos are very playful dogs and they love doing things with their humans. They will always be ready to go out for car rides and are ever-ready for a game of fetch in the yard. Their small size makes Pomapoos ideal pets for apartment dwellers but they also do well in houses having fenced yards. Pomapoos are also easy to tote around and even make great little lapdogs for elderly people or those with limited mobility. An ideal owner for a Pomapoo is a family with slightly older kids who can be trusted to take care of the small dog. The relatively rare designer dog breed is energetic, intelligent, fiercely loyal, and eager to please. All these traits make Pomapoos easy to train. This is a confident and polite little dog that loves to entertain. Do not let its small size fool you: Pomapoos are capable of excelling in agility, obedience, and a wide range of other abilities. They can also be trained to perform tricks or become therapy dogs for those with mental disabilities such as depression and anxiety. Pomapoos can even become service dogs and comfort dogs and due to their yappy nature, make excellent watchdogs as well. How Much Does a Pomapoo Cost? The initial price of your pup is not the only expense you need to consider. You also need to think about the other lifelong costs of dog ownership mainly food and treats, medical care, grooming, pet boarding, travel, etc. Best Dog Food for Pomapoos Due to their small size, Pomapoos need more calories per pound than large-breed dogs due to their higher metabolic rates. They also need small-sized kibble which they can easily pick up with their small jaws. Also, like most small breeds, they are prone to dental issues, so you might want to choose kibble which is designed to eliminate plaque and tartar. Similarly, providing bones and non-lasting chews will also help reduce tartar and bad breath. You can choose to feed wet or canned food to your small pet since it has a higher moisture content than kibble. You also have the choice of feeding freeze-dried or frozen food and raw food. Always make dietary changes after consulting a vet nutritionist. In the first few days, when your puppy comes home from the breeder, feed it the same food that the breeder was feeding it. This is important to avoid digestive upsets. As your Pomapoo grows, you can opt to feed it the food that your vet recommends. Ideally, the best food for Pomapoos is one that is devoid of fillers and by-products. It should contain real meat as the first ingredient listed on the food label. Avoid foods with preservatives, colours, and artificial flavours. Some Pomapoos are sensitive to grains, dairy, and gluten. Some are even known to be allergic to certain proteins like poultry, fish, etc. In such a case, you might want to choose other protein sources. Health Issues in Pomapoos As a cross-breed, Pomapoos are generally healthy dogs. If you choose your puppy from a reputable breeder who uses sound knowledge of canine genetics and healthy breeding practices, then the chances of getting a healthy dog are quite high. Good breeders also conduct health checks on the parent dogs prior to breeding such as DNA testing and patellar checks. This further reduces the chances of genetic health issues in the puppies. Pomapoos are prone to the following health issues: Allergies — these range from food to contact allergies. If you notice your pet chewing or licking its paws or rubbing its face, then it could be allergic to something in the food or its environment. Entropion — in this condition, the eyelid rolls inward causing eye redness and watering. The condition can affect dogs of any age. Sometimes, infection or injury might trigger it. Cataracts — This is the common cause of blindness in Pomapoos. Most dogs adjust to vision loss although there is also an expensive surgery available for treating it. Dental issues — Like all small dogs, dental disease is common in Pomapoos. It starts with tartar buildup and slowly progresses to tooth decay. There can be tooth loss, pain, difficulty in eating, and foul breath. Legg-Perthes disease — Like all toy breeds, this joint condition can affect Pomapoos. The first sign of it is degeneration of muscle in the legs and limping. Obesity — is a common issue in small dogs. It can result in heart disease, certain cancers, back pain, and arthritis. With good nutrition, regular health checks, and daily exercise, Pomapoos can live up to 16 years. Pomeranians and poodles can be yappy; making the Pomapoo a potentially noisy little dog Some Pomapoos tend to be yappy which can be problematic for apartment dwellers. You can train your dog to bark on cue. Yapping should be controlled from the very beginning otherwise; it might become a hard-to-break habit in your Pomapoo. What are the characteristics of a Pomapoo? Pomapoos are intelligent, affectionate, loyal, energetic, and active dogs. They are unique dogs that are confident, polite, and generally not aggressive. Some Pomapoos tend to be yappy. Is a Pomapoo hypoallergenic? Not all Pomapoos are hypoallergenic. Only the dogs that inherit the tight, curly, non-shedding Poodle-like coat are somewhat hypoallergenic. So, a person with allergies might still develop allergy symptoms around so-called hypoallergenic dogs. Subscribe for free oodle information and exclusive offers on the best products for your pup! This high energy comes from their original purpose as sheep herding dogs, bred in Germany in by Max von Stephanitz. Stephanitz thought German Shepherds were everything a dog should be; intelligent, loyal, hard-working and beautiful. While no longer sheep herders, German Shepherds maintain high energy levels and muscle mass. Because of this, they are often used in police forces worldwide or as guard dogs. This breed requires proper nutrition, including protein, fats, and carbohydrates from healthy sources to maintain their health. Dog Nutrition for German Shepherds As large, active dogs, German Shepherds require lots of protein and carbohydrates to build muscle and maintain energy levels. Nutritional requirements for German Shepherds puppies German Shepherd puppies require a balanced diet that contains four types of nutrients below. These ingredients will ensure that your pup grows and develops optimally for a longer quality of life. Proteins Proteins help the puppies in building up their body tissues. Proteins can be found in chicken, salmon, beef, lamb, eggs, and dairy. Fats Fats are important for healthy skin, fur, brain, and vision. The recommended fat level per dry matter basis is 8. Fats can be found in fish oil, chicken fat, and beef fat. Digestible carbohydrates Because puppies are incredibly energetic, they need digestible carbs to provide them with energy. Digestible carbohydrates can be found in rice, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and whole oats. Micronutrients In addition to these key nutrients, German Shepherd puppies also need micronutrients like calcium, phosphorus, DHA, and omega-3, and vitamin A. They also need fiber to promote digestion and bowel movement and clean water to help with bodily functions. For large dog breed only: Foods specially formulated for German Shepherd puppies: Veterinarian and pet advisor Dr. Choose a dog food that is specially formulated for German Shepherds puppies or large breed puppies can ensure your pups are getting the nutritional requirements at every stage of their growth. The opposite side is giving your pup the wrong food that may lead to serious growth and digestive problems. Things to consider before choosing dog food for German Shepherds puppies 1. Their growth Puppies may need different nutrients at different stages depending on their growth rate. For instance, a puppy in the weaning stage between three to four weeks will need more antioxidants which are found in foods containing Vitamin C and E. In contrast, a teething puppy will need wet dog food which is easily digestible food on its tummy to minimize intestinal upset. For instance, a younger puppy may have difficulty eating larger food pieces than an older puppy. Teething If your dog is teething, which starts at around three weeks, you may want to consider food that contains calcium like dairy and bone broth for strong and healthy teeth. On the other hand, if the dog has teething problems, wet food may be a better option than dry food until they recover. Alternatively, you add wet canned food to their kibble to make it soft and palatable. The body weight An underweight puppy has different dietary requirements from an overweight puppy. You do not want to underfeed or overfeed your puppy. Activity Level Puppies that are extremely active require foods high in carbohydrates to keep up their energy levels. If your dog is not as active, you want to keep the carbs down to avoid obesity. With all the many dry foods out on the market, it can be hard to choose the healthiest for your pups. Step 1. The Association of American Feed Control Officials developed nutrient profiles to establish minimum and some maximum nutrient concentrations for dogs and cats. These profiles are updated when new findings from research in pet nutrition become available. They provide practical guidance for pet food manufacturers. Adult Maintenance: Dog foods formulated for adult maintenance have the nutrients adult dogs need. Dogs over the age of one are considered adults, except for some large and giant breeds who do not fully mature until age two. You may see variations of these nutrient profiles on dog food packaging. Step 2. Read the food label The label is the most important thing you should check when deciding which puppy food to pick. Here are the 3 things you would like to read on the packaging: a. List of ingredients The list of ingredients should have the main ingredient as the first ingredient then followed by the rest according to their percentage. For instance, in the label below the first five ingredients, are chicken as the main ingredient, ground whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal, ground whole grain sorghum, corn gluten meal and dried plain beet pulp. Feeding guidelines This will show you how much food and how many times you should feed your puppy. Watch this video if you want to better understand the wording on a dog food packaging means: Step 3. Are there any claims of pups reacting to the food? Do the users recommend or warn against the food? Of course, you want to go with what the majority of the reviewers say. You can also check dogadvisor. Step 4. The vet is in a better place to advise on what type of food to go for or what ingredients to avoid.
