The undercoat is the main insulator. When dogs with a double-coat shed, the hair that comes off is predominantly the fluffy undercoat. In the spring, this fluff comes off in tufts and leaves a lot of mess. The shedding helps your dog stay cool for the warmer temperatures to come. Regular grooming avoids unnecessary shedding and trapped dirt in the coat, which inevitably lands on your floor or furniture. Brushing A German Shepherd with a double coat requires daily brushing. The best brush to use for a double coat is called a rake. A rake targets the shedding undercoat, and the hair is picked up on the brush instead of falling out onto the floor for you to clean. Rake the undercoat from head to tail while removing the hair out of the brush. When you can brush through the hair with almost no hair coming off onto the brush or rake, you know that you have removed all of the shedding undercoat. In general, double-coated dogs can be washed every eight weeks if necessary, and more often if they are shedding. Washing a shedding coat can help to remove excess shedding fur and prevent mats. You can brush the wet coat thoroughly after the wash to assist in shedding maintenance even more. Over-washing can cause irritation and dryness of the skin, so make sure you limit washing to no more than once a week to once a month only if necessary. A double coat is an insulation system on its own. The guard hairs may not grow back properly, and the undercoat may take over some areas of the outer coat. If shearing your dog is absolutely necessary, never shear the coat shorter than one inch. A coat shaved shorter than an inch will leave the skin exposed to sunburn and insect bites. We do not allow the moms to deliver their own puppies, we are there to help them deliver their puppies to eliminate trauma for the mother and for the puppies. We are with the puppies and mom day and night for a week encouraging mom when puppies become too much, just like human moms. Dog moms need reassurance and help as well. Mom and puppies are kept in a confined area that is safe no other dogs are allowed in this area and kept at a specific temperature. Mom and puppy vitals are checked on a regular basis to ensure their health. After 2 weeks mom and puppies are moved to the nursery and given more space to move about and develop their muscle structure. Once the puppies start food they are placed on sheets of non-printed newspapers with shredded paper on top to ensure cleanliness, which is also changed daily.

She is a bundle of tender kisses and has energy for days. She has been a great sister to the newest foster puppies that have come and gone, teaching them the art of playing with toys. Carrie's favorite thing to do is play chase with her K9 buddies. She runs fast and does figure 8's around the resident dogs, who don't even try to keep up with her. Her second favorite activity is napping with the resident Labs. She adores the older resident dogs and has learned great napping skills from them. She continues to work on her leash skills. Carrie has been quietly working on coming out of her shell and has undergone a transformation since arriving at her foster. She loves to curl up in the lap of her FM for naps and bedtime snuggles. As is normal in this type of situation the first place the police inquired was to the possibility of fowl play by my brother. Upon due investigation this was ruled out as the likely cause of the disappearance. The next procedure was to look for a lost or possibly injured man. Unfortunately this was a difficult task as they lived in a rural area with few people and lots of open country of mountains, valleys, woods, and fields. There were many ravines and rough terrain making the searching very difficult. This is when that awful devastating feeling of helplessness comes upon those who are missing a lived one. The not knowing where, not knowing if, not knowing why, not knowing how. There is no relief from from these questions. The days go on but the torment of the questions never leave as you try to function day to day. You can think of nothing else, wish for nothing else, pray for nothing else other than to know the answer to the questions. Day after day, week after week, month after month relentlessly with no answers. Then on a Saturday morning there is a knock at the door. A group of strangers are standing there with a couple of dogs. They ask for permission to try to find the man missing for six months. They ask for a piece of clothing that were definitely worn by him. They are given a pair of pajama pants. Six months of rain, wind, sun, six months of plant growth how could they follow any type of scent trail. This is why they train search and rescue dogs. The dogs led the handlers directly to where he was. In a deep ravine in a wooded area the dog went directly to the body. The other dog went directly to the walking stick a few yards away that he had been using. Everyone always hopes for the best of possible outcomes but the relief of finally knowing is almost palpable. The healing and closure that these volunteers and there dogs brought was of such a benefit that it makes all of their time, effort, and money spent well worth it.
