Lifespan Sociability Boston Boxer dogs are very popular, resulting in many breeders. We recommend searching for as many as possible to find the perfect puppy before you make your decision. Always ask a breeder to show you the facilities before making any payment. In many cases, you can find a breeder that is willing to sell you a puppy at a reduced cost, but we must caution against prices that are too good to be true, as unscrupulous breeders often create these puppies in unsafe environments known as puppy mills. The best way to fight puppy mills is not to buy their puppies. You can always ask your local shelter if they have a Boxer mix that resembles the Boston Boxer. They are athletic and can run fast and jump quite high and will maintain a fast pace for extended play sessions before tiring. They quickly become attached and protective of their owners and are wary of strangers who might cause them to become aggressive and bark. However, they generally get along with other household pets and small yard animals like bunnies and squirrels. Boston Boxers are sensitive to their environment and prefer a set, predictable schedule, and they can be stubborn if you change things up too quickly. They are very intelligent and easy to train, as long as they think they are in charge. They love the company and will remain at your side most of the day. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are very friendly, energetic, and playful. They get along well with pets including, cats and other dogs. They like to play with children and will provide each other with unlimited amounts of entertainment. Boston Boxers are intelligent enough to follow orders and behave and will even learn tricks and guard the house while you are away. They will require at least one family member to take them out for long walks, though, and these are high maintenance in the exercise department, requiring at least one hour of running and jumping each day. If you live in the city, it can be challenging to find enough room, and you will likely require access to a park or trail. They are even more friendly if you socialize them early and get them used to other animals, but even so, this breed rarely gets aggressive toward another animal. This food should be high-quality without any harmful chemicals or preservatives. High-quality dog food will contain meat, vegetables, grains, and fruits, according to the American Kennel Club. You can expect to take your Boston Boxer for a long walk every day, and on some days, you may need a second walk. You can expect to walk at least eight miles a week spread out over about an hour a day, every day, for the next several years when purchasing a Boston Boxer. In most cases, you will only require patience and a bunch of treats to have your Boston Boxer impressing your friends. To train your pet, simply stand in front of them with a treat ready. Boston Boxers are smart and will know you have it. When they figure it out and sit, give them a treat. Stand them back up and repeat. After several tries, your Boston Boxer will catch on and quickly sit on command. Using the above system, you can teach your dog plenty of tricks, like shaking hands, fetch, rollover, and plenty of others. You can even teach them more complex tricks like retrieving the newspaper with a little practice. They only require occasional brushing and trimming of their nails. But there are a few problems associated with them that you should know about before you make a purchase. Minor Conditions. Because a mixed-breed dog can inherit any combination of traits from their parents, you want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed so you have a better idea of what to expect in a specific Boston Terrier Mix. Boston Terriers are known for being a great companion dog and a fantastic family pet. They tend to have a gentle nature and a friendly, energetic personality. They also tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. They can be prone to barking, which can become an issue if it is not curbed with early training. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you should be able to expect a similar temperament in a Boston Terrier Mix. In addition to asking the breeder about the other parent breed, you can also meet the mother dog in-person. This will give you a chance to see what sort of temperament she has, the behavior she is modeling for her puppies, and the manners she is teaching them. The breeder should be socializing puppies while they have them, but it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Boston Terriers are moderately adaptable dogs. They can adapt to almost any type of housing, but they are very sensitive to heat as a brachycephalic dog. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you should be able to expect a similar level of adaptability in a Boston Terrier Mix. But, you do want to make sure you talk to the breeder about the other parent breed so you know what potential range to expect and to prepare for in your Boston Terrier Mix. A mix can inherit the potential health conditions common to one, both, or neither or their parent breeds. From the Boston Terrier side, potential health concerns include luxating patella , allergies, cataracts, and deafness. They also tend to have a sensitive digestive system and are prone to snoring and reverse sneezing because of their short muzzle. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies, so they should be able to answer your questions. Boston Terriers tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They are intelligent and eager to please, so they pick up on things quickly. It also means they get bored easily and they can have a stubborn streak. Although this can be a challenge for first-time dog owners, puppy training classes can help them handle it. The other parent breed could make a Boston Terrier Mix easier or more difficult to train. You want to make sure you ask about them so you know what potential range of trainability to expect. A Boston Terrier Mix could inherit a coat that is similar to one of their parents or one that is truly a combination of both. Should they end up with a Boston Terrier coat, they will shed a little year-round, require weekly brushing, and bathing as needed. Plus, if you do see anything concerning, you can get to the vet before it becomes a bigger problem. Because many dog owners overlook it, gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. A Boston Terrier is an energetic, playful dog with moderate exercise requirements. Daily walks plus some playtime throughout the day are usually enough for this dog. They will have moments of high energy, but they are a brachycephalic dog and they are small so they will tire out quickly. The other parent breed could result in a Boston Terrier Mix that requires more or less exercise. A fully-grown Boston Terrier usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent could affect this, so you do want to ask the breeder about them and note which breed is the mother. A Boston Terrier generally lives for years with some living well into their teens. The other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you should be able to expect a similar life span in a Boston Terrier Mix. Featured Boston Terrier Mix Article. The Boston Terrier boxer mix temperament is similar to that of the Standard Poodle. One of the most desirable features of the Boston Terrier boxer mix is that it is a healthy breed. This makes it a great choice for those who are looking for a pet that is good with animals and kids. The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds that is very responsive to exercise. They are also easy to train and are excellent watchdogs. A Boston Terrier boxer mix for sale is a loving, good-natured dog that is a great addition to any family. The Boston Terrier is also known as the American cocker or the Cockapoo. It is a medium-sized dog that was first used by Scottish immigrants in England. These dogs were originally used for herding cattle and livestock. As time went on, the dog was domesticated and bred for its loyalty and affection toward humans. Because the Boston Terrier is very affectionate, it is sometimes mistaken for a puppy. This is understandable as they are very little dogs, but they are not small puppies. Their puppies do not turn into adult dogs until about three years old. The Boston Terrier boxer mix for sale can be found in various colors and varieties. Most of the time, breeders allow people to visit their puppies to get an idea of what type of personality they have. You can even take your Boston Terrier to the vet for a basic checkup and vaccinations and be up and running in no time! They were originally bred as a hunting companion. In the early days, Boston Terriers were quite expensive, but today they are affordable. However, prospective owners must know the true cost of adopting a Boston Terrier as compared to other dogs of its breed. If a person wants to adopt a Boston Terrier, they must be prepared for the cost. There are a lot of costs involved when adopting a Boston Terrier. One of these costs is the cost of food and vet bills that can add up. The good news is that with little research and conscientiousness, the cost of adoption will not be as high. One way to help lower the cost of adoption is by using the internet. Breeders and rescue groups have websites that offer the cost of adoption and how to apply for assistance. Breeders are well aware of what the cost of adoption is and they make every effort to ensure that they only provide a dog at the minimal possible cost. A good breeder will always try to find the best-breeding partners for his Boston Terrier puppies. He will do his best to get the most favorable price for his puppies by screening those who are unsuitable. A good breeder is willing to work with a potential owner to come up with the most financially feasible solution. Boston Terrier puppies can be found for any price. The cost is based on how many puppies there are in addition to the age, sex, background, and size of each puppy. One way to keep costs down is to purchase an adult rather than a puppy. Buying puppies can result in additional costs because the breeder will need to buy necessary puppy supplies such as food, vaccines, and grooming equipment. Boston Terrier mix owners can often negotiate discounts by paying in advance or buying in quantity. The breeder may also offer a cash discount if you pay for your puppies in cash. Remember that Boston Terriers mix-breeds are prone to several health problems so it is best to get your puppy tested before purchasing him. Paying for your puppies in cash helps avoid the possibility of having to pay veterinary bills for a sick Boston Terrier. It is a good idea to meet and interview several breeders before deciding to buy a Boston Terrier mix. Make sure you feel comfortable with him and that he has a good breeding history. Ask the breeder to show you his animal history, including the parents and dogs that have previously been in his breeding group. If possible, visit several of his Boston Terrier puppies and meet their parents. Boston Terrier mix puppies can become very expensive quickly. Keep in mind that many Boston Terrier mix puppies do not grow up to be show-worthy or adorable pets. It is usually best to purchase your puppies from a reputable breeder. Before purchasing any puppy, it is a good idea to learn as much about the Boston Terrier mix as possible. You should know what to look for in Boston Terrier puppies that are being offered for sale. National Boxer Day is held every year on January .The pet holiday was launched in by TheWoofBook, a Facebook group for dog lovers. There are two schools of thought. In two brave Boxers named Punch and Judy received one of the most prestigious honors to be awarded to an animal— the Dickin Medal. Over the years the Boxer has worn many hats, with work ranging from that of an aide to hunters and butchers, to taking on the role of police dog, guard dog, military messenger and service dog. Boxer coats come in two AKC-recognized colors: brindle and fawn. Sadly, boxer puppies born white were once euthanized by breeders so this trait, which was looked upon as flawed, would not perpetuate. Boxers are born with floppy ears and a long tail, which in some countries are often docked so the dog will appear to possess a more formidable physique. In a Boxer named Brandy became a Guinness World record holder for the longest tongue ever for a canine. Measuring 17 inches 43 cm , the record still stands today. The Boxer bounded in popularity in the United States after World War II, when many members of the breed were brought to their new home by returning soldiers. Success struck again in , when Mazelaine Zazarac Brandy took home the title, and in , when Bang Away of Sirrah Crest earned top dog status. Famous Pet Parents of Boxer Dogs Following are just a few of the many famous faces who have been lucky enough to have had Boxer fur babies: Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart— Bogey and Bacall began their life together as husband and wife alongside their first Boxer, Harvey, who had been presented to the couple as a wedding gift. The Gone with The Wind star even shared a cover of a issue of Movie Mirror with his canine companion. Pablo Picasso— Known as the father of cubist art, Picasso was also a father to several four-legged family members, including a goat named Esmerelda, Afghans called Kabul, Kasbek and Sauterelle, a Dachshund dubbed Lump, and a Boxer named Jan. Kate Upton— The Sports Illustrated supermodel who is a role model as an animal advocate, having hosted several pet adoption events , was a proud pet parent to a Boxer named Harley, who crossed Rainbow Bridge in .Adopting A Boxer If you would like to welcome a Boxer into your heart and home, you can check online at Across America Boxer Rescue , a foster-based non-profit which finds forever homes for members of the breed who wind up in shelters or who have been abandoned. You can also search for adoptable Boxers online at:. Could you be the next forever home for one of our boxers? Rescuing is both rewarding and admirable. Most of our boxers have had a tough time through no fault of their own, and are looking for a fresh start with a loving family. At TBRI, we do our best to make sure that our boxers never again find themselves in need of a home and we take great pride in our adoption process from start to finish. Three easy steps…. If you do not hear from someone, you are welcome to email us at info theboxerrescue. During your phone interview, our volunteer will discuss more about why you want to adopt a boxer, and answer any questions you might have about our rescue. Your references will also be contacted, including your vet reference. This is an important step and we require that ALL family members fur and human be present. If there are no boxers that are a match for your family, we ask that you be patient. We are always rescuing boxers, so one is bound to come along that is a perfect fit. You are welcome to maintain communication with us during this waiting period. Be sure the application is filled out in its entirety. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Where do your boxers come from? Many of our boxers are owner surrenders. Perhaps the owner purchased the dog on impulse, not understanding the needs of a boxer. Sometimes, financial situations change, and families are not able to care for the dog anymore. We also take dogs that have been brought to shelters around New England. If a shelter reaches out for help, we do our best to find placement for the boxer in need. All of our boxers are temperament tested and evaluated before coming into rescue. It should be noted that ALL dogs require a decompression period when going to a new home. Can I adopt a female dog if I already have a female dog? The short answer is no. Our experience in placing dogs, has shown us that placing two females together is oftentimes not the best long term situation. We receive many calls from owners needing to surrender their female boxers because there is fighting with another female dog in the house. Either way, the fighting is often brutal and bloody. We have adopted a policy to never place two female dogs in the same house. Are your boxers healthy? They are brought up to date on vaccines, tested for heartworm, and spayed or neutered unless too young or not medically able to be. Their vet records are provided upon adoption. Do I need to have a fenced in yard to adopt a boxer? We do not require a fenced in yard for all of our boxers. We look at each dog, individually, and based on the needs of that dog, we may require fencing. Please note that we do not consider an electric fence to be a proper method of containment and are not able place a dog in a home that uses electric fencing. Do you have a shelter where I can come meet the boxers? We are not a shelter and do not have a physical location where you can meet our adoptees. Most boxers will stay with their owners or shelter until we can secure a foster or adoptive home for them. What Are Your Adoption Fees? In some cases, surrendered dogs require surgery which we, as a rescue, pay for. Sometimes, we get emergency pleas from owners or shelters about a dog in urgent need of medical treatment. The money we receive from adoption donations barely covers the cost associated with rescuing dogs. Often times we rescue a dog that costs us far more than the adoption fee covers. We do offer our puppy parents the option of having their pups spayed or neutered at one of our vets for a lower cost. Spaying and neutering is mandatory and we require proof. We look forward to speaking with you! Get Involved. They are a distinctive wrinkly dog breed. Originally bred to be a companion dog for Chinese royalty, the Pug spent much of its early years living in luxury. They were imported to Europe in the s, where they continued to prove popular in royal circles. Pugs were recognized by the American Kennel Club in .They are typically very sociable dogs and make great family pets. Unfortunately, Pugs are prone to several health problems because of their unusual structure, compact breathing passageways, and shorter snouts. It can also be difficult for Pugs to keep themselves cool in hot conditions. The breed also requires frequent exercise and a healthy diet to stave off obesity. Their coats have an array of different colors — black, cream, brown, orange, red, or any mixture of these colors. The modern-day Pom is heavily influenced by the British Royal Family. During the lifetime of Queen Victoria , she worked to reduce the breed in size from the typical pound range to accommodate her preference for a smaller dog. By importing Poms from across the world, not only did she achieve her goal of making the breed smaller, but it also resulted in a diverse range of colorings which we see in Pomeranians today. The modern Pomeranian is commonly used as a household pet. They are affectionate towards their owners, and thrive on attention. In their quest to be alongside their family at every turn, Pomeranians can occasionally suffer from separation anxiety. The breed remains extremely popular in Latin America. The Chihuahua can either be short-haired or long-haired. It is believed that the dog was descended from the larger Techichi breed , which was favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs in the twelfth century, they refined the Techichi into the smaller, more compact Chihuahua we are familiar with today. As with other smaller breeds, Chihuahuas can require lots of veterinary help in the early months of their life. They can be born with moleras a soft spot on the skull , but these fill in as they get older. Their small size makes them vulnerable to attacks from larger dogs or other animals. Typically, a Chihuahua makes a good companion dog and will be better suited to apartment living. In registration lists in both the United States and the United Kingdom, the Frenchie was in second place. The breed has its origins in the United Kingdom. They were often used in blood sports, until these were outlawed in .When lace workers in Nottingham, England were displaced by the Industrial Revolution, they moved to France — bringing their bulldogs with them. As the nineteenth century progressed, the French gained an affinity for these dogs. This coincided with English breeders sending Bulldogs to France which they deemed to be too small. The dogs became popular with the creative class in Paris , garnering favor with artists and fashion designers. Today, French Bulldogs are kept as companion dogs in many countries. They do require socialization and close contact with humans to reduce the chance of separation anxiety. Overall, they are considered intelligent, affectionate and occasionally stubborn dogs. Poodles come in three different sizes from largest to smallest — the Standard Poodle, the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle. Whilst poodle mixes have gained popularity in recent years, it should be noted that they are not purebred dogs. There is some contention over the origins of the Poodle. On one hand, some believe that the breed has its roots in Germany. An alternative theory is that the Poodle comes from France. The breed is named Caniche in French meaning duck dog , and some claim that the Poodle is a descendant of the extinct Barbel. Some even suggest that the breed may have its origins in eastern Europe or Africa. The modern Poodle has several uses, but it is perhaps most commonly associated with performing service dog tasks. Poodles can be trained as autism service dogs, guide dogs, and offer assistance to other individuals with disabilities. Although they are trainable, the Poodle is intelligent and requires patience from owners and dog trainers alike. The Siberian Husky has one of the thickest double coats of all breeds, which helps them to withstand even the harshest, coldest weather conditions. The breed did originate in Siberia, where it was bred by the Chukchi people in the eastern part of the region. Initially, they were simply used to transport goods and people across vast distances of the treacherous landscape. As the people became more familiar with the dogs and their behavior, the Huskies were eventually invited to live amongst them. The Siberian Husky made its way to Alaska in , where it served a similar purpose. They were also used for sled dog racing — which is still the case today, with several huskies taking part in the annual Iditarod contest which races over a thousand miles of Alaska. The Siberian Husky is very independent and can be difficult to train. In particular, males may be inclined to challenge authority during training sessions. Training them from a young age is essential — by doing so, owners will be rewarded with a friendly, social and amiable family pet. From their working roots in Scotland in the nineteenth century, all the way to their modern utilization as a family pet or reliable service dog, the Golden Retriever is one of the most adored dog breeds around the world. The breed originated in the Scottish Highlands in the s. He maintained a comprehensive stud book which detailed the origins of the Golden Retriever. Until the publication of the stud book in the s, some had even speculated that the Golden started off as a Russian circus dog. The first breed club was set up in , and the Golden Retriever was recognized by the Kennel Club in .Its popularity extended across the world in the s and s, with the AKC recognizing the breed in .Golden Retrievers are usually affectionate, intelligent and easy to train. These traits make the Golden Retriever an ideal candidate for a family pet, particularly if the household has young children. They are occasionally still used as hunting companions. In , the Labrador retains the bronze medal position in our analysis of popular dogs around the world. The breed dates back to the s, where it was developed in Newfoundland, Canada. Small water dogs were bred with the larger Newfoundland breed to create a new breed called the St. The St. By the s, the breed was popular across England. The breed was originally predominantly found with a black coat, but at the turn of the nineteenth century, the Yellow and Liver now Chocolate Labs also appeared. Labs are known to be even-tempered and a relatively healthy breed. They make great family pets, but have also been used for a number of functions. They are incredible swimmers, which means they can use their nose to locate injured or dead waterfowl. They can also be used as police or military K9s , or to perform service dog tasks. The versatility of the Labrador highlights why they are so popular around the world. They are the third-most registered breed in the United States, and feature in second place in this analysis — just as they did last time. A medium-to-large sized dog with distinctive pointed ears, the German Shepherd was developed to help with herding sheep and protecting flocks in Germany. These efforts took place in the second half of the nineteenth century. It was decided that the breed needed to be strong, smart, fast and agile to fulfill its role, and whilst early efforts to standardize the breed failed, a gentleman named Max von Stephanitz was instrumental in its eventual success. He had a clear idea of what a working dog should be, and was so taken with a dog he saw in a dog show in that he decided to purchase it on the spot. Von Stephanitz then formed the Society for German Shepherd Dogs, and within a matter of decades, the breed became one of the most popular — not just in Germany, but in other countries around the world. Today, the German Shepherd has multiple uses. Its trainability, temperament, drive and build make it well-suited for K9 work in police and military teams. Their strong sense of smell also enables them to succeed in detection disciplines and search and rescue. This muscular, medium-sized dog has retained the crown it earned in our previous analysis. The origins of the Bulldog are not pretty. Bred in England as a cross between the Pug and the Mastiff, its original use was for bull-baiting and blood sports. When bull-baiting was banned in the s, the breed almost became extinct. Throughout the rest of the s, breed enthusiasts worked to refine the characteristics of the breed, toning down its fierce aggression and turning it into something more akin to a companion dog. Today, the Bulldog is used primarily as a family pet, although they can be trained as a protection dog. Whilst they can be difficult to train, they form strong bonds with their owners and are fiercely loyal to their family. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Our Long Coat German Shepherds look incredible and are bred from some of the best bloodlines originating from Germany. Take a look at the long coat German Shepherd puppies and adult dogs that we currently have available here at Regis Regal. Long Haired German Shepherd Adults For most people it's probably fairly easy to determine what a long coat German Shepherd is - it simply refers to the length of their fur. Whilst a "standard" German Shepherd will traditionally have short fur, long coats are the result of a recessive gene that any dog can carry. It doesn't mean long coats have any problems - far from it, and for many people they are an even more desirable dog than the standard breed German Shepherd. Long haired German Shepherds look incredibly handsome, and if you're happy with the additional effort required in grooming them and keeping their hair in good condition then they're as loyal and obedient as any other German Shepherd. With our private courier service, we can safely deliver your puppy to all fifty states with utmost love and care. More information here on the long-coat puppies we currently have available for sale. What is their Temperament Like? There is no discernible difference between the temperament of a long coat German Shepherd and a normal short coat dog. For a long time they've been unfairly labeled as being difficult, but sadly this really stems from them not being accepted due to falling outside the normal breeding standard. The Long haired German Shepherds we've raised here at our top breeding facility in Illinois. Our specialized trained dogs have gone on to be used as search dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs, service dogs and therapy dogs. There's no reason long coats can't perform as well or better than short coats since they do look quite incredible at the same time! Whilst a long coat can be a far more desirable dog for some people, when it comes to price they can actually work out around the same price, or even cheaper, than a standard or "normal coat" German Shepherd. The dogs we breed and train here at Regis Regal come from some of the best bloodlines in the world. We conduct Schutzhund training to develop desirable traits including confidence, desire to work, and self-control. View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. Second, we try to treat our dogs Labradoodle and Poodle well. We feed our Labradoodle and Poodle high quality food with plenty of protein, and give them wonderful socialization and opportunities for exercise. We have 12 acres along the Enoree River with trails, additional property next to a Greenville state park, and property on Lake Hartwell giving us the opportunity to take the dogs kayaking. We recognize the importance of socializing young Labradoodle puppies so they will not be fearful as they mature. Our Labradoodle puppies have lots of opportunities to play with our children, and water games are definitely on top of the list. Labradoodles love the water and so do my kids, as you can see below. Third, we try to find appropriate families for our Chocolate Labradoodle puppies. A Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppy or any puppy cannot be completely reliable in the house until the puppy is about 6 months old. The simple point is that no matter what some breeders tell you you will be partially involved in the house training process unless you buy an older Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle , but we want to help you with that process. A one-year health guarantee; extended to three years for all who continue to feed TLC. We are concerned with finding really good homes for our Labradoodle and mini Labradoodle puppies. Labradoodle Color To see a list of available colors, check out this page. At ChocolateLabradoodlePuppies. Ultimately we cannot completely control the color of puppies. Even though chocolate is the most desirable color, we sometimes have puppies of other colors even occasional merles. These puppies, will of course, also make excellent pets. These non-chocolate Labradoodle puppies are also available to great families, but we know that Chocolate Labradoodles are the most desirable. The Labrador Retriever has a short coat that sheds. By breeding the F1 Labradoodle back to an unrelated Poodle, the chances of getting the highly desirable non-shedding Poodle coat increase exponentially. Some F1B Labradoodles are bred back another time to a Poodle in an effort to guarantee a Poodle coat. If high quality dogs are chosen to breed that have the head shape of a Labrador Retriever it is possible to get a puppy that is very similar in many ways to a Labrador, but has the beautiful non-shedding Poodle coat. Both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, helping Labradoodles excel in smarts, train-ability, and a general desire to always please their owner. If you desire a family-friendly, kid loving, medium energy dog that is comfortable inside or outside, that loves the water and the land, you should definitely consider a Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle. For more info about Labradoodle puppies or mini Labradoodle puppies, please email nathan crockettdoodles. Check out our sister site miniLabradoodlePuppies. We specialize in Chocolate Labradoodles and mini Labradoodles, but often we have other colors as well. Occasionally someone travels from Atlanta, Columbia, Raleigh-Durham or Knoxville, but our proximity to North Carolina and the popularity of Labradoodles in North Carolina make Charlotte and Asheville our most serviced locations. We also have some who are interested from distant states, but we primarily serve the Southeast U. With high energy, this breed is not for the faint of heart. While your Mini Labradoodle will be perfectly content to snuggle up on the couch with you, he needs rigorous exercise to ensure optimal health. Thanks to their Poodle ancestry, our Mini Labradoodles are whip smart — making them a breeze to train with positive reinforcement — but this is tempered by the easygoing nature of the standard Labrador. Sociable and friendly, our Mini Labradoodles for sale get along well with other dogs — but their high energy may make them a bit too exuberant when it comes to play! Mini Labradoodle Puppies Health Considerations Every breed of dog comes with its own unique health considerations. Though generally healthy and long lived — with an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years — our Mini Labradoodle puppies for sale are no exception. This will help you quickly identify symptoms and seek immediate treatment should an issue arise. They can also be short, dense, and sometimes harsh in texture, more similar to the Labrador. Like all doodles, Mini Labradoodles come with a range of coat varieties. Some take more after their Labrador parent—with straighter coats—and others have the tight ringlets of their Poodle parent. Most will fall somewhere in between, and nearly all Mini Labradoodle puppies have coats with minimal shedding. Initially, you will need to brush your Mini Labradoodle puppy around four times a week until his coat is established — at around eight to 12 months, you can reduce this to three times a week. You can take your Mini Labradoodle pup to the groomer for a trim between two and four times a year — with many owners opting for seasonal cuts — but should wait until your pup sheds his baby fur before taking him for his first cut! Meet Mini Labradoodle Puppies for Sale. Life Span Did You Know? Second-generation crosses could include a Labradoodle and a Mini Poodle or two Mini Labradoodles as parents. This hybrid dog breed was originally developed to create smaller potential service dogs that might be a good fit for people with allergies to dog fur. With a mixed breed, you can end up with any combination of traits from the parent breeds. Often, Mini Labradoodles are smart, friendly, and sociable dogs that are highly trainable. They are often found working as service dogs and therapy dogs and living as beloved family companions. Although they are not recognized by the AKC, the Mini Labradoodle is recognized by other canine registries. A Mini Labradoodle is a combination of two friendly dog breeds that crave human affection and are always happy to have company. These dogs also tend to have playful, energetic personalities and low prey drives. Well-socialized Mini Labradoodles tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Due to their smaller size, these dogs can be injured by accidental rough play or accidental falls, so any interactions between young kids and puppies should be closely supervised. Miniature Labradoodles will usually bark to alert you when someone is at the door, but generally are not prone to nuisance barking unless they have been trained into it. It may not be a bad idea to train your dog to stop barking early on. Well-socialized Mini Labradoodles may be initially wary of strangers, but tend to warm up quickly and will often be happy to make a new friend. Miniature Labradoodles are highly adaptable. Provided they get enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, they can adapt well to apartments as well as larger homes. They tend to do best in moderate climates, but can tolerate warmer or colder climates. As with any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Although they tend to have a fluffier coat, they are also smaller and may need to bundle up in some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks in the cold. Mini Labradoodles are also very much companion breeds. They bond closely with their families and thrive on being near them, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The health of the parents and good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Mini Labradoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done to help allay any concerns you may have. Miniature Labradoodles tend to be highly intelligent and eager to please. This generally makes them easy to train and a good fit for owners of all experience levels. In fact, their parent breeds are considered some of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. These dogs respond best to consistent training and positive reinforcement. Puppy training classes can ensure that owners of any experience level learn the latest training techniques and start building a strong bond with their puppy. Grooming requirements with a Mini Labradoodle can vary. On the Poodle side, you have a low-shedding, but high-maintenance, coat that needs daily brushing along with trimming and grooming every weeks. On the Lab side, you have a higher shedding coat that is more low-maintenance, requiring some weekly brushing or brushing a few times a week and intermittent bathing. Overall, Mini Labradoodles range from having a non- to low-shedding coat. They can have one coat type or the other, or a combination of both of them. So, you will want to be prepared for brushing a coat a few times a week and the possibility of more grooming needs. Regardless of coat type, there are some other general grooming tasks you can count on. Regular dental care for your dog will help prevent serious dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay later in life. This is especially important for dog breeds with floppy ears as they are more prone to developing ear infections. Miniature Labradoodles can be high-energy dogs. In general, they require daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity to be happy and healthy. Since they love to be around their family and can have an exuberant and outgoing personality, they will likely be up for more playtime if you are. This little dog may get tired more easily at times and could push themselves too far in their excitement. On the other hand, they may just keep going and going with no signs of slowing down. What is most important is making sure your Miniature Labradoodle gets enough exercise and mental stimulation. Fully-grown Mini Labradoodles usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Miniature Labradoodles generally live for years on average. Featured Mini Labradoodle Article.
Join our community of paw lovers across the U. The Joys of Adopting a Puppy Adopting a puppy is one of the great joys of life. A puppies' sale gives you the opportunity to give a dog a wonderful life. You are helping to provide them with the loving forever home they deserve. At Pawrade, we are proud to provide dogs of any size the chance to become a companion and cuddle buddies all in one. You are also taking a stance against commercial puppy mills. Welcome a new addition to your family and let your heart melt with a new fluffy friend who will always love you unconditionally. Puppies for Sale: What You Need to Know Before looking up any puppy sale or thinking about breeds, you need to consider whether you have the time to care for your new friend. Every dog has its own personality, preferences, and needs. Examining whether you can provide cute puppies for sale with the life they deserve is crucial before committing to being the forever home of a new pup. Size Size matters when adopting a dog. It's not about whether you've dreamed of having a tiny Maltese sitting in your lap or a giant German Shepherd bolting across the park. You need to think about what size dog you can accommodate. Big dogs are obviously not suited to apartment living. Large dogs also require substantial outdoor space to roam around. You also have to consider how the size of any dog for sale will impact your family. For example, some larger dogs may not be a good idea if you've recently welcomed a child into the family. Breed Every breed has its quirks. Some breeds require considerable time and attention, such as the Border Collie. Others, such as the Golden Retriever, are prone to health problems that could reduce their average lifespan. You also need to consider what you want from a dog for sale. Some people prefer to have a little Schnauzer curled up in their laps, whereas others want a breed that can join them on their morning runs. Moreover, some people suffer from allergies, which will immediately discount puppies that shed a lot. In this case, you would want to look at hypoallergenic dogs, such as the standard, miniature, or toy Poodle. Disposition The disposition of your pup is also crucial because not every dog is suitable for inexperienced owners. Some dogs can be challenging to train, such as the Beagle, due to the fact they struggle with staying focused. Other dogs bred for guard duty may also have a slightly aggressive disposition that must be tamed early to avoid running into socialization issues later. If you already have children in the house or you're in a multi-pet household, you will need to consider how well your pup is likely to get along with the younger furry members of your home. No dog is born a bad dog, but some are more susceptible to behavioral issues than others if they are not given the time and attention they deserve. Activity Levels What makes a puppy for sale a joy is their love and attention. However, love and attention work both ways. All dogs require your focus. Your lifestyle needs to match up with the energy levels of your dog. For example, you may have a little Shih Tzu or Pomeranian that only needs to be taken for short walks because of their little legs, but others may need more than an hour of intense exercise daily. You need to be willing to exercise your best friend in all weathers. If you work long hours, some dogs will not be suitable because they need extra care. Not all dogs are content with just a simple walk around the block, no matter how often you do it. Working dogs usually need to have space to roam free. Playing catch or fetch is not only a fun way to spend an hour or two. With certain dogs, it's a daily necessity. Grooming If you're searching for "puppies near me," consider their grooming needs. Some dogs don't require the services of a professional groomer, but the curly locks of the Aussiedoodle or Goldendoodle can quickly become tangled and matted without regular hair care. For example, the Goldendoodle will usually require brushing two to three times a week, with a visit to the groomer every couple of months. Do you have the time to groom your dog properly? The Retriever can quickly develop a fishy odor if they're not regularly groomed. You also have to consider professional grooming costs, which can soon add up over a year. When looking up "dogs for sale near me," check out their grooming requirements to keep your pup feeling soft and looking fabulous. Health Issues Nobody wants to think about the health issues puppies for sale could develop as they get older. These problems can take years off their lives and quickly drain your wallet in visits to the veterinarian. Familiarize yourself with a breed's health issues and consider how likely those problems are to surface. Bigger dogs like the German Shepherd and the Golden Retriever are well-known for their issues with hip dysplasia and cancer, whereas the Beagle tends to develop epilepsy. Always plan for the worst, and make sure you take out a comprehensive pet insurance policy to cover those major medical expenses. Training Enlisting the support of a professional trainer is an excellent idea if you have limited experience with dogs. Adopting a puppy allows you to get more out of your training because older untrained dogs tend to be more stubborn and may struggle to learn new commands. Training can vary wildly between breeds, like other considerations of adopting or buying puppies for sale For example, Scent Hounds are often challenging to train because they tend to forget their training whenever they detect a new smell on the horizon. The dignified Afghan Hound is exceptionally loyal and affectionate, but this classy dog also tends to be named as one of the most naturally disobedient dogs. Many owners become frustrated when their training methods fail, which can lead to problems in the relationship. Think about your training experience and whether you can really provide the training a dog needs. Cost Working out the financing on your new family member does not stop with the initial price or buying toys and the dog bed. Think about the ongoing costs of food and the potential for veterinarian bills. Does your dog already have all its shots? Are there any existing health problems you need to know? When you purchase a puppy through Pawrade, all of this information is conveyed to you. Dogs for sale are more expensive than people think. Sadly, many of these animals find themselves in shelters because their owners can no longer afford to look after them. In these tough economic times, it is something that is happening more and more often. They are easy to train and love to please their master. They generally get along with other pets and tend to watch out for children. If trained, they won't bark unnecessarily. Copyright Happy Haven Retrievers. Developed by Bonflare. The breeder strongly recommended that I begin basic puppy training immediately. Ricky was too young for group classes and his vaccinations were not mature, so I opted for a personal trainer. Armed with little information about dog trainers, I ran a web search for someone nearby. I chose Sarah Lowell because I liked her background and because she lived nearby. Ricky was a typical puppy which means 50 percent boundless, unharnessed energy, 50 percent teeth, and an irresponsible bladder. With his needle teeth, just petting him was a blood sport. Our possessions were nothing but chew toys. Almost immediately after Sarah stepped in, she was able to direct his energy into approved behavior. During our in-home classes Ricky solidly learned the basics of sit, down, off, wait, come, leave it and drop it. Each training session was well structured and had a goal. Ricky learned to walk on leash. He learned not to door dash. Soon I noted that the scabs on my arms were healed. My shoes were intact. There were no puddles in the house. He has learned to relax with his owner so that he is a joy to spend time with. He no longer runs through the house looking for things to chew, or jumps up on people. His training, which was started at an early age, has carried through to adulthood. Overnight, a well-behaved puppy can turn into a rotten teenage dog. This happened with Ricky. He is now the dog I always wanted and the dog I always thought he could be.
boxer shepherd mix puppies for sale - Chews can help to stop this. Some are tough enough to give hours of fun and many have health benefits, in particular for their teeth. They also have a soothing effect on your dogs. If you have anxious or hyperactive dogs chews can help to relax them. What are English Bulldogs? English Bulldogs are medium sized muscular dogs with wrinkled faces and short legs. Their heads and necks are enormous and their jaws are massive, broad and square. Their upper lips hang down and they have pushed-in noses. Their coats are short and smooth. A distinctive feature of these dogs is that they drool and slobber, which makes them even cuter. Although they look intimidating, they are in fact very affectionate, playful and perfect as family dogs. However they are also protective and make good guard dogs. What Types of Chews Are There? Basically they can be divided into 2 different categories, those that are edible and those that are toys. Both are good for the dental health of your dogs. In addition they can get food poisoning from viruses and parasites which can cause big problems in the gastrointestinal system. You need to avoid this despite their pleading looks. Edible chews include bones, sticks and treats. Dogs find that they smell and taste delicious, although we may find the smell unpleasant. The downside to edible chews is that they can make a mess. They can also become costly if your dogs have a couple a day. Synthetic chews are often made of rope or nylon and are much cleaner than edible chews. Like edible chews, they help with dental health. All have an appealing scent so are not as smelly as edible chews. English Bulldogs have strong jaws so need a tougher chew. Soft ones will be gone in five minutes if not less. It is also a good idea to supplement the edible chews with toy chews as they will keep your dogs occupied while you are out. Elk Antlers Elk antlers are a good choice for English bulldogs. Not only are they tough, but they have health benefits. They contain calcium which is good for the bones and teeth. There is collagen which improves skin health, helps with joint pain and boosts muscle mass. In addition elk antlers contain phosphorus which is good for the kidneys, muscles, bones and blood vessels. In fact they are as strong as bones. They massage the gums and increase jaw strength, as well as looking after general dental health. A lot of them are shed naturally by elks so you will be doing something for animal welfare. Rawhide Rawhide is another tough chew, but it is controversial. On the other hand there are some rawhide chews that are promoted by vets. They are safe and are easily digestible. It may be a good idea to get advice from your vet. You could buy your English Bulldogs bully sticks. They are made of pizzle, and for dogs they are very tasty. They are dense so last a long time so will keep your English Bulldogs occupied. Unfortunately, on the downside, they do smell horrible. Beef Tracheas Beef tracheas are also a good choice as they are made of cartilage and are tough. They contain glucosamine and chondroitin. These both help your English Bulldogs to build cartilage and help to ease any joint pain they may have. They are made from cow and yak milk which is turned into cheese. It is mixed with salt and lime juice and then left to dry for a few weeks. This makes it very hard which is good for your English Bulldogs. They also come from cattle and yaks which are not treated with antibiotics or hormones. Other Options Finally there are dog chew toys which also give hours of enjoyment. Yes, your English Bulldogs may prefer an edible chew, but they will still have fun with a toy especially if they are left alone for a while. The best materials to go for are rubber or nylon as they are more durable. With too soft a material your dogs may be able to tear the chew apart and may swallow pieces and even the stuffing. There are also chew toys which can be filled with treats which gives your pups an extra incentive to play. They are totally natural and organic and are made from yak and cow milk from which the lactose is taken out. There is also no gluten in them, another thing that can irritate and cause allergies. They are 6 — 8 inches in length and 1 — 2 inches in width which will give your English Bulldogs hours of enjoyment. In fact they are dense and last up to 5 times longer than rawhide chews. They are the largest elk antlers on Amazon and they are 6 — 12 inches long and weigh between 9. They are dense which will suit your English Bulldogs and last longer than bully sticks, rawhides or pigs ears. They can last up to 14 hours which will provide hours of fun for your pups. In addition they are healthy and are a fantastic source of calcium, phosphorus, manganese and zinc. They are also good for dental health. There are no antibiotics, hormones or additives in these antlers. They also come from free-ranging elk that shed their antlers naturally. They are picked in the forest and hand sorted by Jim Hodges Dog Training. Beef Tracheas are made from cartilage and are very healthy. They are jam-packed full of vitamins and minerals, are high in protein and low in fat. They have glucosamine and chondroitin which helps with joint pain and arthritis. They will help your English bulldogs increase their movability and flexibility. They are made by intertwining 3 sticks and have excellent health benefits. They are high in protein which helps to build muscle mass. They are also low in fat which contributes to a lean dog. English Bulldogs are greedy dogs so these treats will help to keep their weight down. Another benefit of these chews is that they are excellent for dental health and help to remove plaque and tartar. They are made from grass-fed, free-range cattle and contain no hormones or chemicals. If your English Bulldogs are prone to allergies, these bully sticks are a good choice as they are free from corn, soy and grain, all of which can cause allergies. In addition to there being no chemicals, there are no artificial preservatives or colors either. They are made from free-range and grass-fed cattle, with no added hormones. They are great for dental health as well and clean the teeth, so reducing plaque and tartar. They are also odorless which is a great bonus. They are the perfect chews for an aggressive chewer. It will take a lot for your English Bulldogs to destroy these toys. They are a great design. Flat chews can be difficult for your dogs to hold, but this chew is wishbone shaped which is much easier. It also has deep grooves, which makes it even simpler for your dogs to grip. The information in the above list is provided courtesy of dogtime. Can Bulldogs Have Rawhide Bones? No cooked bones and now bones bought from the store. Maybe you can give your dog rawhide bones then? Unfortunately, the answer is, again, no. Dogs have been known to contract and suffer from Salmonella and E. Coli after chewing on rawhide bones. In addition, rawhide bones often contain gelatin, artificial sweeteners, and other additives and preservatives. These ingredients can be toxic to your dog. Rawhide bones have led to digestion problems, blockages, and cancer. All of this being said, your dog will in all likelihood not die if you give them a store bought bone or a rawhide bone to chew on. Although there are more dangers in presenting these bones to your dog versus presenting them with a raw bone, the dog bones that you can find in the store have to go through screening processes to make sure that they are safe. The best option, however, is still a raw bone or a raw recreational bone. Health Benefits of Chewing on Bones Chewing on bones is instinctual for dogs. They are a historically predatory species, and it is in their nature to gnaw on bones. Setting aside any physical health gains, a dog chewing on a bone is a happy dog. Bones are great sources of calcium and phosphorous, as well as a plenitude of other beneficial minerals that your dog needs in order to remain healthy and active. Chewing on bones strengthens stomach muscles, prevents bloating, and helps with bowel movements. Dangers to Watch Out for When Chewing Bones The biggest danger in letting your dog chew on a bone is the potential for the bone splintering and your dog ingesting a piece of the bone. While bigger dogs may be able to swallow a small piece of bone without batting an eye, smaller dogs can choke. However, even if your dog is quite large, swallowing a piece of bone can cause digestive issues. This is why small bones and cooked bones are such a problem because they have a higher likely hood of splintering when your dog chews on it. Make sure that your dog is chewing a bone that is proportional to their size. A large dog chewing a small bone can end up swallowing the bone and choking. Likewise, a small dog chewing a big bone can injure their teeth or jaw. A dog, especially a smaller breed of dog, can break one or more of its teeth chewing on a hard bone. Their teeth will be tender and more vulnerable to cracking or breaking. Do not give your dog a bone if they suffer from pancreatitis. The marrow in bones is high in fat, which can lead to diarrhea or a flare up in your dog. Watch to make sure that the bone does not splinter or that your dog does not swallow the bone whole. Give your dog a bone after they have already eaten their meal, as they are less likely to chew too vigorously when they are full. Once the bone becomes worn down, throw it out. Once a bone has become weak, it is more likely to splinter and cause damage. You need to know your dog and know how they eat. If you know that your dog is a particularly violent eater, then perhaps it is not the best idea to give them a bone that might break under pressure. Give your dog a bone that is longer than the length of their muzzle, as that makes it impossible for them to swallow the bone and choke. When the bone is cut, it becomes weaker and will break more easily. Bully Sticks are made out of one ingredient: beef muscle, meaning they are digestible and tasty. They are much easier to digest than rawhide and carry the additional benefit of not being full of chemicals, gelatin, or additives. If your dog is a particularly violent chewer, then you can even buy a braided Bully Stick that will last longer. There are also Bully Sticks made in fun patterns to stimulate your dog mentally while they chew. The only downside to using Bully Sticks in place of bones is that you lose the calcium and phosphorous that you get from bones. However, Bully Sticks are a very good alternative to bones if you are looking for one. You can buy them on Amazon here. Additional Questions Can dogs eat chicken bones? Dogs can eat chicken read Can Bulldogs Eat Chicken? Raw vs. Cooked and chicken bones, as long as they are raw and the bone is not too small for your dog breed. Rawhide is an extremely dangerous chewy for a Bulldog; while they love them their life is always at risk when you give them Rawhide, yes even under your supervision! Bulldogs have a tendency to Chew the Rawhide making it soft and slimy they then will inhale the whole piece causing obstruction, foaming at the mouth then this will cause them to collapse from lack of oxygen into their lungs weather you are or not experience with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR on a dog it is not worth the risk giving your Bulldren Rawhide. Although they are said to be percent digestible they are NOT many do not realize that Canine digestion is very different than human digestion; they do not have the digestive chemical breakdown like humans do. The veterinary journal now shows compressed vegetable chew treats, of which Greenies is the most popular sold, are now the third biggest cause of esophageal obstruction in dogs behind bones, rawhide and fish hooks. In my opinion they should be pulled from the shelves! To many precious dogs have lost their life chewing these now. The Nylabone Durachews are a good one and they last a long time. They make excellent dog chews because they are made of a bony material and so are hard, long-lasting, interesting to the dog and not smelly or staining. They are similar in hardness to a Nylabone, but tastier and healthier. Not all Bulldogs will appreciate chewing antlers the most are young puppies and Bulldogs that just love to chew! Antler chews are also full of nutrients such as calcium. Here are a few tips to help your Bully to enjoy the antler chew and keep him or her safe. The come in a variety of shapes and sizes. If there are any, it is easy to remove them by rubbing the sharp edge with sandpaper or I have done this with a nail file. If he is bearing down hard on the antler, it is best to take it away since chewing any hard chew this way could damage the teeth. They sell a huge selection of very Durable toys that are long lasting! They have some out now called Rip-apart's and our guys will spend hours playing with these trying to take the shells off of them. TJ has had this shark for over 6 months now and plays with it everyday and looks as good as the day it was purchased and he claimed it as his : These are fantastic and our Bullies love them! You can pick these up now in just about any pet shops! We highly recommend these even our puppies love them but even though these are rawhide free never leave your Bulldog untended with any type of chewy. But also, they have a tendency to be destructive. Namely — to their toys. Like shoes, purses, baseball caps, remote controls, end tables… In addition, bulldogs can also show a softer side to their favorite toys. Have you ever heard of English Bulldogs suckling their toys? And believe me, it is CUTE. Below I roundup and review toys that are recommended specifically for bulldogs. I go over durability, safety, enjoyment, and overall quality. They deserve the best of the best, and top quality toys. And in case you have no idea what that means, think about how a baby sucks on a pacifier. Or a young toddler who sucks their thumb. Bulldogs do this type of thing as well. But they do it with their stuffed toys, or their blankets or beds. Not sure why there would be a difference, but that was the case. I believe it makes them feel safe and comforted. Because whenever my bulldogs start to suckle, they go into almost a trance-like state, and basically fall asleep while doing it. Oh, and one other thing — it is sooo adorable to watch!! We have gone through so many Snoopy plush toys over the years. The hands and feet have squeakers in them, but no one tends to play with those parts of the monkey. For some reason, this specific monkey is a sought after suckle toy for my dogs. How many people actually recall who Lamb Chop is? Anyone born prior to millennial age will probably have a good recollection. Lamb Chop was created by entertainer and puppeteer Shari Lewis, who spent over 30 years performing for children on educational TV shows. But for some reason, my big guy loves to suckle on this one. Best English Bulldog Chew Toys For English Bulldogs who love to chew, you need to find a durable, quality product to stand up to their powerful jaws. But I do really like the quality of Nylabone brand chew toys. There are four different areas to hold onto, for them to get the best gnawing grip. Plus there is an English Bulldog on the actual packaging! The blue rubber part in the middle makes a crinkling or crackly sound as it bends. There are different versions, but the one we have contains animal sounds. We have the largest one, which is really about the size of a baseball. My smaller dog cannot fit it into her mouth, but my big guy can. Just be careful if you have a chewer, since the plastic is pretty solid. Wekin Anti-Burst Exercise Ball This is a really fun one, especially if you have a bullie who likes to herd. Have you heard about a competitive sport for dogs called Treibball? If you are in an actual competition, your dog will push 8 balls into a goal. But this inflatable exercise ball has provided hours of outdoor activity for my dogs. The question, however, is should they eat them? The problem is that some treats are loaded with salt, fat, fillers, artificial ingredients, coloring, and, sadly, even more. If, however, you feed them low-quality treats all the time, they will start to suffer from various health problems, including obesity, joint problems, tummy problems, diabetes, and several more. Below are a few ingredients you should avoid when choosing a treat for your English Bulldog. Do your best to avoid treats with these ingredients. Salt Like sugar, salt often goes by other names on the ingredient list, like sodium chloride, iodized salt, and sea salt. Yes, some salt is needed, but not much. Like humans, too much salt can cause various health problems in dogs. Dairy Dairy products, while generally healthy, are also a common cause of food sensitivity. If your English Bully has problems with sensitivity, avoid treats with any dairy in them like cheese and milk. Corn Unfortunately, corn is a cheap meat replacement found in many dogs treat recipes. First, grains can provide some needed nutrients. Also, peas are often used in place of grains, and peas have been linked to diet-associated canine heart disease DCM. Calories Calories are great when your English Bulldog needs some quick energy. Long-term chews usually have the highest calorie count, so give them sparingly to your English Bulldog. What To Look for in Dog Treats for Your English Bulldog Just as there are ingredients you should avoid, there are several you should look for in a good dog treat for your English Bulldog. They include:.
