brown english bulldog puppy
My love for boxers started when I was very young and a family friend bred and raised them. I was raised around dogs all my life as my Mom showed Saint Bernards, but I never thought that I would get bit by the show bug. A very good friend of mine decided to show Bernese Mountain dogs 4 years ago and I went to watch her show a couple of times and thought, I would like to give it a try. Kelly was my support system, and helped me finish my dogs with her words of encouragement, as I was always a nervous wreck. I have met a great new network of people in the dog show world, many who have given me support, encouragement, and helpful hints in and outside of the ring. I cannot thank all of you enough as well, you made me feel welcome, which makes me look forward to my next shows. My dream was to one day own a boxer of my own, and not only has that dream come true, but I also got hooked on the showing aspect as well. I was set on wanting a flashy fawn male, then a DK. Brindle male came along. Kelly convinced me to expand from the fawn and go with the brindle, and I am glad she did. Sam is an amazing boy with the perfect temperament and I could not ask for anything more from him. We then decided to get a second boxer addition to our family. Brillante is such a beautiful, fun, loving, and intelligent girl. Thank you Lynn and Diane for giving me the opportunity to have this great girl. I would also like to thank Josie O'Reilly of Summer Bo xer s , for all her help and support she has given me through out these last few years as well. Our dogs are a part of our family and live in our home. We do not breed often, and if we do it will be to add another dog to the family. If you are looking to add a boxer to your family, I can refer you to a responsible breeder that may have a upcoming litter or available puppies. Rescue boxers are typically older dogs who have been surrendered or abandoned—it's a rare day when we have a puppy or even a younger dog to adopt. We try to place dogs as quickly as we can, but since many of them come from broken or abusive households, we deliberately take our time to research the person or families who wish to take one into their care. At this point in the rescue's life we want to do our best to make their next stop their final home, so we appreciate your patience in this process and your commitment to providing the rescue a permanent home. We're looking for people who want to make the next years of a rescue's life their finest ones. Some of our best adoptions have come from people who were dead-set on a certain age, color and sex of boxer and end up having their heart stolen by a completely different dog—we encourage you to put aside any aesthetic expectations and just come looking for a dog you can fall in love with and one that will fall for you! Our organization is made up of dozens of people who have taken in dozens more boxers over the decades—we'll encourage you to talk and build relationships with some of these people so you and your new rescue can benefit from their experience. We believe in what we do and encourage you to contact us—we're always looking for another loving home for a rescued boxer. Follow us on Facebook! We have been adopted by that most irrepressible of clowns, that most intuitive of comforters, that most selfless of companions - the Boxer. He will make you laugh; he will make you cry; he will try your patience; he will outwit you when he can. And he will love you with an intensity that will surprise and amaze you. He will be your canine soul mate. We want to ensure we make the right decision for the dog and the potential family. Harley was surrendered to us because he became paralyzed three weeks previously and his family was unable to care for him any longer. As well as the physical and financial considerations, they live in a rural area and lacked access to specialized veterinary care. It was with great trepidation that we agreed to take Harley. We are just a small, self funded rescue group. We don't have very deep pockets. We knew even getting a diagnosis for Harley would be beyond our means, let alone the cost of his care and treatment after the diagnosis. Once Harley was in our care and we saw his fighting spirit, his battle became ours. Harley is such a trooper, with such an incredible spirit he deserved a chance to live. After diagnostics and a MRI Harley appeared to have had a hemorrhage in his spinal cord that caused a clot and burst. With aggressive and intensive physiotherapy the vets are cautiously optimistic that Harley will overcome his paralysis and go on to lead a normal life. Harley is no longer with us but in his honor we continue our fundraising efforts in order to help other the other boxers that find their way to Boxer Rescue Canada. If funds are available, we occasionally are able to assist a families who face extraordinary veterinary expenses with their boxer. Please help support Boxer Rescue Canada by taking part in our semi-annual auction which are held on Harley's Angels facebook page. The auctions are held in November and May. Parvo Virus: people can bring that virus in on their shoes, clothing and skin. Just about everywhere. This virus can wipe out a litter within hours. Puppies are very vulnerable to these kinds of diseases; their immune systems are developing and are unable to fight off this disease. Coccidia: Another disease that can wipe out a litter of puppies. It also can be carried in with shoes. But most of the time, puppies will ingest it by eating stool or breathing in the spores that are left on the ground. Stress on the mother: This could lead to inadequate milk supply for the puppies. Loose bowels and lack of appetite. We want the mother to care for her babies as long as she can, as she gives them the immunity that they need to fight off diseases, grow and get strong. We will be taking videos and pictures. We will try to post weekly, so that everyone whom is adopting one of our puppies can see them grow. I don't think this will cause an issue since most of your puppies are adopted out of state. Thank you for your understanding.
These pups are intelligent, friendly, and eager to please. Black Labs are also known for being loyal, protective, and devoted to their families. In addition to their great personalities, Black Labs are also excellent athletes. They excel at agility and obedience trials, and they make excellent hunting and retrieving dogs. Black Labs are versatile dogs that can fit into almost any lifestyle. They do very well with children. The breed is usually tolerant of climbing and tugging by small children and love to be spoiled. This confident yet tender pup is social and easy-going around new people. Black Lab Puppies Health Considerations Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 10 to 12 years — our Black Labs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Black Lab puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Hip and elbow dysplasia are both hereditary conditions that can cause joint pain and mobility issues. Allergies are relatively common in dogs, and Black Labs are no exception. Symptoms can include itchiness, redness, and hair loss. Exercise-induced collapse is a relatively rare condition that can be triggered by strenuous activity. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, and collapse. While these health concerns can be daunting, many of them can be effectively managed with proper care. Finding a Black Lab puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. They are also one of the most popular breeds in the United States, in part due to their beautiful black coat. And while the coat does require some maintenance, it is relatively easy to care for. Weekly brushing will help to remove dead hair and keep the coat looking shiny and healthy. Labs also benefit from occasional baths, which will help to remove any dirt or debris that has become trapped in their fur. Meet Black Lab Puppies for Sale. Skin diseases 1. Respiratory System: One of the important things to mention about this dog breed is that the Boxer dog is a brachycephalic dog breed. It means that their skull has a different shape as compared to another dog. So just like all these dog breeds, Boxer dogs will snore a lot and the reason is their specific skull anatomy. Snoring is not considered a serious health condition. However, it is due to airflow obstruction which can result in some other serious respiratory diseases. Heart Conditions: Having a purebred Boxer puppy, there are likely chances that it will inherit health problems that are specific to its breed. Boxers are medium-sized dogs and are prone to different heart conditions. Heart disease is very common in Boxer puppies so much so that the disease got its name Boxer cardiomyopathy. This condition in Boxer dogs is also known as Arrhythmogenic Right 3. Breathing difficulties, heart murmurs, coughing, fainting and other symptoms can be seen in the early life of these dogs usually during the first year. However, not all Boxer dogs will inherit this condition. Canine hip dysplasia Depending upon the body type and size of the Boxer dog, there are chances that it may suffer from hip dysplasia. This disease is also an inherited trait but this condition can also be due to injuries. Another term used for describing hip dysplasia is dislocation of the hip joint. Usually, you will find this condition in medium to large-sized dog breeds such as German Shepherds, Labrador Retriever, the Great Dane etc. This is a very painful health problem and the dog can feel difficulty in rising and moving and can suffer from depression, lethargy, loss of muscle mass and weakness in the hind legs. Why is it important to choose Reputable Boxer Breeder? Choosing the right Boxer breeder is very important as most things depend on this. You are already familiar that this breed is prone to different health problems. A reputable breeder will do predictive genetic testing and health tests to predict the health risk of Boxer dogs. Moreover, these breeders will happily offer you a health guarantee for Boxer puppies that usually comes with a health certificate. So to ensure that your new Boxer puppy is happy and healthy, always get it from the best Boxer breeder. When it comes to finding the perfect Boxer puppy in Ontario, price is often a major consideration. While there is no definitive answer when it comes to how much a Boxer puppy may cost, there are a few things that can help you budget for your new furry friend. However, depending on the specific breeder and bloodline of your puppy, the price could be higher or lower. In addition to the cost of the puppy itself, there are also a few other expenses to consider when bringing a Boxer into your home. These include things like shots, spaying or neutering, and microchipping. She is in urgent need of a home of her own and family that will care for her as she recovers from leg surgery or unfortunately we will need to delay her surgery. She was found stray in the Hamilton area and was transferred to us from animal services so we could find her a forever home. She is a sweet girl who is looking for a home of her own. One of her favourite things to do is play with a big ball or loud squeaky toy and engage her humans in play. Nina has an abnormal gait and can be stiff when she gets up. Our vets have recommended leg surgery. EHS will take care of her medical bills and be available for support through out her recovery. But in order to do the surgery we need a home where she can be kept calm and quiet and a family that is willing to take on her rehabilitation. The vets believe her quality of life and mobility will be greatly improved following surgery. She walks well on leash and has mastered some basic obedience skills and is willing to learn more. She will make a wonderful family dog. She will be spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on her core vaccinations prior to finalizing her adoption. If you have any questions about her, what her rehabilitation may entail or the adoption process please contact her adoption coordinator at: nda. But sometimes life situations dictate that a dog needs to be surrendered. The volunteers at Boxer Rescue Ontario know how difficult it is to make a decision to surrender your dog and we commit that we will take all available measures to facilitate a new loving home for your boxer where he will be happy, healthy and safe! A volunteer from our intake department will get back to you as soon as possible to go over the details. Rescue boxers make wonderful additions to a home, but they require work and commitment. Please read the requirements before completing an application form. Once you submit your application, our volunteers will review it and you may be contacted to set up a phone interview, provided you meet the criteria for the dog s you have applied for. The interview usually takes about 30 minutes and allows us to confirm the details of your application. It also gives us a better idea of what your family and home are like so that we can assess whether the boxer you applied for is a fit. If the boxer is not suitable for your home, and you have asked to keep your application on file, we are in a better position to find a match that would be right for your home. Please, due to the demands on our volunteers time, we are not able to contact all of our approved applicants and provide status updates. Matched with a dog — Successful applicants are matched with a dog. We typically have a large number of applicants interested, but our primary concern is finding the perfect fit for our foster dogs; we do not operate on first come first serve basis. Please be patient through this process. Home visit — After the phone interview and if your application is chosen for one of our dogs a volunteer will contact you to set up a home visit at a suitable time when all members of your household can be present. You will not be permitted to meet one of our foster dogs until the home visit has been successfully completed. This is the opportunity for your family including any dogs you have, to meet our rescue boxer. If all goes well you proceed with the adoption contract and an adoption fee and taking your rescue boxer home that day. Puppies at this age cannot have their vetting completed before adoption and the adopters of puppies are contractually obligated to complete their vetting i. We would happily accept any amount over and above these minimum fees in order to help other dogs in our care. After you adopt we will follow up with your during your initial adjustment period. Remember that we are always available to answer questions and provide help when possible. Please be patient with your newest family member. As big as an adjustment that your family is experiencing it is tenfold for your new boxer. Give them a chance to adopt to their new environment and to become the family member they want to be. Temperament: Alert, protective and reliable. However, you will certainly get a tall dog with a very muscular build. To see one standing on the front porch and guarding its home is quite a sight. They have a large, broad muzzle and very strong jawbones. Their eyes are dark and its floppy ears can stand erect or fold over at the tips. Height and Weight Both male and females stand between inches tall however, females are usually a bit shorter. Females will weigh between pounds, will males weighing up to 95 pounds. Breed Colors and Coat Brown is the typical base fur color for this breed — it can be anything from chocolate brown to a light tan. Black can appear in large patches or as a mask over their face and muzzle. In some cases, you may see white or light grey patches. If they inherit a coat from the German Shepherd parent it will be a short, fluffy double coat. Whereas a coat from a Boxer will be smooth and closely cropped to the skin. Mixes will a double coat will shed moderately and those with single coats even less. They will need to be brushed once a week and daily during shedding season. Both parent breeds are commonly employed in this type of work. What makes the Boxer Shepherd so unique is its mischievous, playful attitude in addition to being a hard worker. Both German Shepherds and Boxers have an unfair reputation for being aggressive. In reality, a well trained Shepherd, Boxer, or mix is extremely even tempered and friendly. The Boxer is the 11th most popular dog breed in the United States, as of .The German Shepherd is the 2nd most popular breed. You can expect them to be a bit of a goofball as well as a loyal guard dog. These dogs are not aggressive by nature, but they will bite if they are provoked. Your relationship with them should be one of mutual respect and understanding. You need to keep in mind that working dogs always want something to do and will have high energy levels — so you will need to keep them as active as possible throughout the day. A well trained dog will be very quiet and only bark when something is wrong. However it will take time to train a puppy out of their natural suspicion of strangers. Expect a bit of barking here and there as your puppy learns who they can and cannot trust. Since these pups are so suspicious of other people, early socialization is a must. Even socialized puppies will remain distant to people outside of their home. Finally, you should know that this dog does not like to be left alone — so you should find a good dog sitter if you are away from home often. A German Shepherd Boxer Mix makes a great family dog for the right type of family. Apartments and urban areas do not make the best home for one. Your dog will need their own outdoor space to let out all of their energy. If you have ever owned a German Shepherd or a Boxer, a mix will not be too much more difficult to manage. Keeping this pup active and entertained is the biggest challenge for the breed. They are not for owners with inactive lifestyles. Exercise Requirements This very active dog will want to be on its feet for most of the day. If you are a born outdoorsman, your furry friend will be eager to join you on all of your adventures. They need at least 90 minutes of exercise each day. This could be with a 30 minute walk and then an hour of play. Your dog will be up for just about anything, but running is their very favorite thing to do. Try a game of tag with your pooch, or a game of hide and seek. You can also cater to their love of agility with an exciting backyard hurdle course. If you live on a farm then they will help you tend your livestock just like their Shepherd ancestors would do. Number of Walks Per Day: .Grooming and Shedding Their short coat makes grooming fairly easy. Once a week brushing is fine for most of the year, but you will have to brush them daily during these shedding seasons. As tempting as it may be to stick a dirty dog right in the tub, you should only bathe them once every 3 months. Too much bathing will wash out the oils in their skin. Also, make sure to get between those big floppy ears. Feeding and Diet When you have an energetic dog it is important to fuel their day the right way. This breed will do well with a raw or whole meat diet. Protein should make up most of their diet. Carbs and fats should be derived from natural sources such as fruits and veggies. The fillers in many commercial dog foods are nothing but empty calories. It is very common for large dogs and causes pain and impaired mobility. Physical therapy and pain medication can treat mild to moderate cases of hip dysplasia, while surgery may be needed for more severe cases. EPI is a chronic condition that requires lifelong treatment and dogs with EPI must be given enzyme supplements. With little planning ahead you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on! It is a cross between the Boxer and the German Shepherd. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Full of life and always wanting attention, I never leave her behind. She is very sweet and a great cuddle buddy, but this goes without mentioning her evil side. She has a mind of her own but as long as you speak to her as an equal , she will never leave your side. Very friendly and plays great with other dogs big and small. He also plays great with our three cats. He loves rides in the car and truck. I found her over the internet and fell in love with her picture. I drove 30 miles to go get her. She's had her tail docked. But she still likes to chase her stub even though she can't reach it. I've seen her go after it for awhile though. And when she's excited her whole body shakes. She's a sweet puppy and her best friend is my one year old son. I noticed that Boxer-Shepherds aren't a popular hybrid, but I think I've come across one of the best breeds that will ever have existed. She's in great health. She's 4 years old in this picture. She loves to run around sometimes, but most of the time she lays around. She is .She has another dog friend named Biskit, which they get along okay but do fight lot. Nothing serious though. Your dog should have a healthy weight. Extra weight or being overweight is bad for dogs because this places additional pressure on its spine. Great news to reveal that, several steadfast breeders across the state offer German shepherd Boxer mix breed. Though, you need to be very certain that they are brought up and coming from a good place. Many breeders breed their pups in such a poor state that it may lead Boxer Shepherds to act disappointingly. It is highly suggested to have their social circle and most important their training for the best output. They should have a vigorous weight because being overweight or extra fat is too bad for the dogs, it may place an add-on burden on their spine. Another most considering thing to keep in mind is their obesity which can be so hazardous and may lead to fatal. The main and very common reason to reach such a situation is to give them food treats while playing with them or during training sessions. If you love your dog, do not ever give them such treats for their good behavior or something. Below are the mentioned good dog food brands which are considered Perfect GSD boxer mix-breeds: 1. This protected coat they have shows that they can easily play in the coldest temperature outside and can roam around whenever they want without any real need for a doggy sweater and clothing. Price: The usual cost for the German Shepherd Boxer mix will fall somewhere between to dollars. A good place to start your search is with the many listings of German Shepherd puppies for sale posted by the many reputable breeders who are part of the American, German Shepherd Club. Unfortunately, finding a good breeder in your area can be a challenge if you live in an urban area since these breeders do not advertise in the local paper. This group makes sure that the dogs they sell are purebred and healthy and will provide you with a complete background of any pet they may have. Craigslist is another good place to find a German Shepherd puppy for sale. The owners of most of the ads are often breeders, looking to get rid of their puppies quickly. The good thing about Craigslist is that you can post your own ad to allow others to find your ad as well, which helps to spread the word about the available dogs for sale. Here you can read the complete history of a particular dog and find out about their health. Besides, you can find out how to care for the dog properly so that he or she remains healthy. Another great way to find a good breeder for a puppy is to search through the classifieds for the area you live in. If you live in a large city, such as Chicago, this may not be a practical option for you. Still, if you live in an upscale neighborhood in the suburbs, then your search should be limited to dog classifieds. Some online breeders have catalogs of German Shepherd puppies for sale posted to their websites. They may also offer email contact with owners of those dogs, and may even offer to ship their dogs directly to you. Another good thing about these online breeders is that they are usually more expensive than the ones who post classified ads, but if you know how to look, you can usually find better-quality dogs at a lower price. Sometimes people who are looking for the perfect gift for a dog are looking for purebred dogs, not mixed breeds. Even if you have found your perfect German Shepherd, make sure you research your puppy thoroughly before buying. German Rottweilers are very famous for their strength and power as a protector and as a family pet. And, interestingly, the Rottweiler Puppy for Sale that is advertised on Craigslist is considered by many experts as the best breed of Rottweilers in the world today. Many owners who love their German Shepherd puppies but cannot afford to buy them, advertise the puppies for sale on this website. The German Shepherd Puppy For Sale offered on craigslist is actually a healthy purebred Rottweiler that is being offered for sale by a licensed breeder in either the United States or in Germany. Most of the owners who advertise the puppies on craigslist are not licensed breeders. Most of them are dog enthusiasts who want to save money for their trips or vacations to other countries. Many owners want to show off their pets at dog shows or at their parties. And to them, breeding a German Shepherd is an expensive affair. They consider German Rottweilers as elite pets. If you are willing to buy a German Shepherd puppy, you need to find a good breeder. You can do it by asking around people you know. Another option is to check out the classifieds section of your local newspaper. You can also use the Internet to look for Rottweiler puppies for sale. If you find the right breeder who is willing to sell his puppies in good condition at reasonable prices, then the deal is sealed. Before buying the puppies, you should have some knowledge about Rottweiler breeders. Ask the breeder to provide you with some references so that you can contact them and get more information. A good breeder always welcomes questions from potential buyers. You should also ask the breeder to provide you with the medical records of the puppy. You should also check the breeding history of the puppy to see if any genetic defects can be passed on to other Rottweilers. Most Rottweilers are bred to be big dogs. Therefore, you should not purchase a puppy that is just a little bit smaller than the dogs you would usually be purchasing. This is because they are more likely to be hostile towards you once they get to be a bit older. Also, it would be a good idea if you were to choose a male over a female. A male Rottweiler is usually more aggressive. Rottweilers tend to be very loyal to their owners. As such, you must be able to develop a strong bond with your Rottweiler puppy to help it adjust to its new home. If possible, you should look for German Rottweiler puppies for sale at a breeder who already has the puppy. By choosing a well-known breeder, you can be sure that your puppy will have a good temperament that will suit your family. Once you find a reputable breeder to purchase German Rottweiler puppies for sale from, you will want to do a little bit of research before making the actual purchase. One of the things that you should research is the history of the breed. The breeder should also provide you with breed-specific information, such as the size and weight of the puppy that you are considering. Tear stains appear in certain breeds more often than others, and they can indicate a lot of different things. What are tear stains? The stains are often accompanied by discharge, but not always. Epiphora , a condition that comes from excessive tear production or the inability to properly drain tears, is usually the source of the stains. Epiphora can have a variety of causes and can be acute or chronic. The reddish stains appear when porphyrin, a pigment found in tears, builds up under the eyes. Stains that are brownish or rust-colored may be the result of a yeast infection on the skin under the eyes that is able to thrive because of the constant moisture from tears building up on the skin. What are the causes? The eye produces tears to flush irritants and stay clear. Normally, tears then drain away through small holes near the eye and get sent down the throat. Epiphora is the result of abnormalities in this process. Here are a few medical reasons that a dog might develop epiphora : Glaucoma: Causes fluid buildup in the eye and damages the optic nerve. Conjunctivitis : An inflammation in the lining of the eye that can result in mucous, pus, or discharge. Eye infections : Caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or irritants like smoke or shampoo. Irritant exposure: Secondhand smoke, dust, and allergens can cause the eyes to produce more tears. Teething: In puppies, teething can be accompanied by excessive tears. Ingrown eyelashes : Usually hereditary and appear more frequently in certain breeds. Inverted eyelids: Entropion is a condition where a portion of the eyelid is inverted, resulting in eyelashes rubbing against the eye. This causes irritation, scratches, and eye damage. Shallow eye sockets: More common in brachycephalic dogs dogs who have shorter snouts. Ear infection : An infection in one ear can cause the eye on the same side of the head to produce tears more than usual. Scarring: Scars from past eye infections or eye damage can affect the ability to drain tears, causing build-up. Improper diet and stress: Lifestyle has an effect on epiphora. Consult your vet to form a balanced diet and work to reduce anxiety. These can be seasonal, food-related, or the result of using plastic food and water bowls. Which dogs get tear stains more often? Photo credit: Getty Images You may notice dogs with white or lightly-colored fur have tear stains more often, but this is mostly because the tear stains are just more visible against those colors. Photo credit: Getty Images Some breeds, however, are more likely to develop eye problems as a result of heredity and genetics. Brachycephalic dogs tend to have shallow eye sockets, which can cause the eyes to bulge. You may especially notice the inability to fully close the eyelids when your dog sleeps. Shih-Tzus , Pekingeses , Malteses , and Pugs are among the short-nosed breeds that commonly develop eye problems. Photo credit: Getty Images Poodles and Cocker Spaniels , along with other breeds, are more genetically likely to have imperforate puncta, a condition where the holes near the eyes that drain tears do not properly develop. This causes tears to build up, and stains are more likely to form. How do you treat and prevent them? Photo credit: Getty Images Treatment for epiphora is as varied as the causes , which is why you must see a vet or eye specialist before you attempt to treat it yourself. Your vet will determine the cause and form a plan to treat the condition. If the cause is an irritant, a simple eye flushing may be enough to reduce tear production. In cases of an eye or ear infection, your vet might provide you with medicated drops or antibiotics. For genetic conditions or issues with eyelashes or eyelids, surgery or electrolysis could be required. If the cause is allergies, you may need an antihistamine or a change in diet. Some vets may recommend a supplement like this one to aid with epiphora. You can also find wipes specifically formulated to aid in the removal of tear stains. Do not switch to a grain-free diet without talking to your vet, as it may be linked to certain heart conditions. What else can you do? Photo credit: Getty Images In the meantime, you can take steps to make sure your dog is more comfortable. Clean the area affected by excess tears with a paper towel soaked in warm water. Use a dog-safe eyewash to remove irritants, and you may want to consider an Elizabethan collar if your dog is pawing at their eyes to avoid further damage. As for removing the stains, there are many products on the market that claim to do so. Usually, these are a waste of money and can even be harmful to your dog. Generally, wiping away the tears frequently will reduce the presence of porphyrin, the pigment that causes staining, as well as any yeast infections that might occur. You can clean the fur with colloidal silver, which is safe near the eyes. It may take a few weeks before you see a reduction in tear stains, but over time, this will help. Products that are not safe around the eyes include hydrogen peroxide, topical vinegar, and makeup remover. Does your dog have tear stains under their eyes? How do you treat them? Let us know in the comments below! DogTime Editors. Those unsightly reddish-brown markings around a dog's eyes. Because there are so many causes of tear stains on dogs, any pup can get them. But you won't always notice them. Tear stains on white dogs are the most obvious, but not every white dog is going to get them. Some dog breeds are more prone to tear stains than others, regardless of their color. What Causes Tear Stains on Dogs? First, a quick overview of what causes tear stains on dogs. Generally speaking, dog tear stains are caused by a condition called epiphora. Which simply means the dog is either producing excessive amounts of tears or has poorly-draining tear ducts. Over time, a pigment called porphyrin, builds up under the eyes, resulting in the characteristic red-brown stains. Darker tear stains may also be the result of a yeast infection that has developed on the skin under the dog's eyes thanks to constant moisture. Many of the causes of epiphora are minor and not something to be concerned about. Allergies, for instance, or untrimmed hair around the dog's eyes. Other causes are tied specifically to the dog's breed. If you notice ongoing tear staining, we recommend checking with your vet to identify any potential health issues. Dog Breeds with Tear Stains The dog breeds most prone to tear stains fall into one of several categories, but can also fall into more than one category — like the Poodle, which falls into three! These categories are: Breeds prone to congenital tear duct abnormalities Breeds with long facial hair White dog breeds It's also worth noting, some dogs, like German Shepherds are prone to allergies, one of the main causes of tear stains. This is a list of the most common dog breeds that are prone to tear stains. If you're considering getting a less common dog breed, you may want to check with a breeder to see if tear stains are a known issue. Flat-faced breeds typically have round, bulging eyes. And while many humans find this look endearing, it does make it more difficult for the dog to close his eyelids fully. Resulting in regularly irritated, watering eyes. To make matters worse, many dogs with flat faces also have narrow or crooked tear ducts, making it nearly impossible to drain all that excess water. Breeds Prone to Congenital Tear Duct Abnormalities Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Labradors A common congenital condition among these breeds is imperforate punctum also called punctal atresia , which basically means the tear ducts are underdeveloped. You won't always notice the tear stains, however. For instance, on a brown Lab or dark Poodle. But there's a good chance they're there. And, as a result, tear stains. Additionally, for some of these breeds, like Cairn and West Highland Terriers, their coarse hair will sometimes start to grow inwards, making eye irritation even more of a problem. It's so common, it's almost a cliche. Almost any dog breed that is primarily white like the Samoyed or Bichon or can be white like the Poodle has a chance of showing tear stains at some point in their life. It's simply part of having an all-white dog. Size Doesn't Matter Though many of the dogs most prone to tear staining are small, there are plenty of large dog breeds with tear stains. A white Standard Poodle is as likely to show tear stains as a tiny Maltese. And a pound boxer has the same flat-face issues that a pound pug does. Have a dog with tear stains that won't go away? Andy fact checks and writes for Pure Pet Food while also working as a full time veterinarian. Working with high profile veterinary professionals and nutritionists, Pure Pet Food are changing dog food for the better. They are usually the result of the dog producing too many tears or having an inability for the tears to drain away as normal. What are tear stains in dogs? Some dogs produce too much of a pigment-containing molecule that can be found in dog tears and cause the staining. These molecules, known as porphyrins, contain iron, which is responsible for the red colouration, which gets darker when exposed to sunlight. Porphyrins are usually excreted via the digestive system but in dogs, they are also removed from the body in urine, saliva and tears. Darker coated dogs can also suffer from tear stains, but the marks are harder to see on the dark hair. For this reason, it is important for go to your vet so they can perform a check-up when the signs of dog tear stains are first noticed. What causes tear stains in dogs? The answer to what causes tear stains in dogs is usually an excessive amount of tears on the face, either from too many tears being produced or the tears not draining away properly. This could be the symptom of a serious medical condition or indicate an infection, so it is important to see your vet if you notice signs of tear stains for the first time. Possible medical causes Glaucoma — a serious condition that causes a build-up of pressure in the eye and can damage the optic nerve. Eye infection — infections by bacteria, viruses or parasites can cause a discharge from the eye. Ear infection — may cause the eye on the same side of the head to tear more than is usual. Ingrown eyelashes — these can rub against the surface of the eye, causing irritation and damage. Entropion — a condition where the eyelid rolls in, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye and causing irritation. Mechanical causes, due to the dog's body construction Large tear glands — larger glands produce larger volumes of tears. Small tear duct openings — each eye has a tube running from the eye into the nasal cavity to drain the excess tears via the nose. Small openings to these ducts reduce their effectiveness and the excess spills over into the hair. Blocked tear ducts — as for small duct openings, blocked ducts cannot remove the excess liquid from the eye. Some breeds of dog such as Poodles and Cocker Spaniels have a tendency for the drainage holes not to develop properly. Scarring — if there has been previous infection or eye damage, tear drainage may reduce. Hair around the eyes — if hair keeps getting into the eyes, it can wick the tears away, drawing the moisture from the eye and down to the skin. Shallow eye sockets — particularly in brachycephalic dogs breeds with short muzzles such as Pugs, French Bulldogs or Pekingese , eyes can bulge and protrude, sometimes so much that the eyelids never close completely, even when sleeping. Other possible causes: Irritant exposure — irritants like dust or smoke can cause the eye to water attempting to remove the irritating substance. Allergies — allergic reactions can cause the eye to water excessively. Poor diet and stress — Anxiety and stress can cause a number of issues. Cheap, low-quality foods can often be a problem. Teething — when puppies are teething, they produce more tears and tear stains may become apparent. It is a good idea to have your vet check that there are no other issues causing the tears but, once they have finished teething, the problem often goes away. Signs and symptoms of tear stains in dogss The most obvious sign of tear stains in light coloured dogs are the red marks in the hair below each eye. These are much harder to see in darker coated dogs, and it may be that the damp hair from excessive tear production or the tears being drawn away from the eye into the fur are the easiest symptoms to see. There may be a discharge from the eye, depending on the cause of the tears, but this does not happen in every case. If your dog has stains that are brown rather than red, particularly if there is a noticeable odour, then they may have a yeast infection that can be caused by the skin being constantly damp under the fur. How to treat tear stains in dogs If the cause of dog tear stains is a medical one such as infection, your vet will prescribe medication as required to treat the condition. For cases such as entropion, the treatment may involve surgery to stop the eyelids rolling in. In the case of allergies and irritants, once the allergen or irritant has been identified and removed then the excess tears should be reduced. Anti-histamines may be needed if it is not possible to remove an allergen completely. Some of the mechanical causes are permanent and so need management. Preventing tear stains in dogs with these kinds of problems involves keeping the face scrupulously clean. Wiping the face with a warm damp cloth, at least twice a day removes tears and reduces staining. Keeping the area around the eyes trimmed will stop hair going into the eye to irritate it. This also stops tears keeping the skin damp, preventing secondary yeast infections. You can use organic unrefined coconut oil for dog tear stains under the eyes, as it provides a gentle water repellent coating, stopping stains and protecting the skin. Use porcelain, glass or stainless steel food and water bowls, as plastic bowls can become damaged and harbour bacteria which may cause irritation. Common advice on how to clean dog tear stains recommends warm water and cotton pads to clean the area, and this is the safest tip for how to remove dog tear stains naturally. If the stains are stubborn, a dilute boric acid solution like contact lens cleaning solution may help. There are many other tips given in various places on how to get rid of dog tear stains, but often include substances that may cause more harm than good. What is the best dog food for tear stains? Sadly, some dogs simply have smaller ducts and shallow eye sockets, predisposing them to tear stains. Breeds like bulldogs and pugs are more likely to have blocked ducts or unsightly stains. A quality, balanced diet will help to improve their overall health and strengthen their immune system to prevent future infections and irritations which can exacerbate the problem of tear stains. The ultra-processed nature of the food makes it less nutritionally viable and more likely to cause irritation too. Pure has proven to be a awesome dog food for tear stains, and plenty of pups are looking prettier and feeling happier and healthier after eating Pure. Now, I know you might be worried about using hydrogen peroxide since it can be a bit strong. Besides, the peroxide is necessary because it takes away the color and reverses the pigmentation. Second, start adding small amounts of cornstarch to the mixture. The formula should look like paste. Take this paste-like mixture and spread it through the tear-stained areas around the eyes. Give the mixture a few hours to work its magic. After that, grab a warm, damp towel and wipe it off. Some foods are full of preservatives, chemicals, additives, coloring agents, and all kinds of harmful ingredients. You also want to avoid products that are soy, grain, or carbohydrate-based. Instead, you should look for high-quality foods that contain balanced, whole-diet nutrients. Premium-quality foods can help keep tear stains away. You should also avoid beef-based protein sources for some time and see if the tear stains get any better. Tap water practically screams tear stains, along with a bunch of other health issues. All you need is a small filter attached to your kitchen sink or even inside your water pitcher. Coconut Oil Coconut oil is amazing. It has anti-inflammatory properties that are perfect for soothing away anything irritating your pup. The pH level also inhibits bacterial and fungal growth, therefore preventing infections. Grooming This last one might seem a bit off, but you should consider it. You know who your eyes get watery if something gets inside it? The same happens to dogs. Having their fur constantly get in their eyes leads to irritation and tearing. Eventually, tear stains develop. Even better, take it to a professional every now and then and have them pamper your pup. It might just go a long way in preventing tear stains. Dog tear stains are often a symptom of a larger problem and a significant warning sign owners need to pay attention to. What Are Tear Stains? They are caused, in the most direct sense, by porphyrin—a reddish-brown pigment found in tears. Porphyrin is produced as the body breaks down iron. This molecule is excreted through many different pathways, including the gut, saliva, urine, and—you guessed it—tears! All dogs produce some amount of porphyrin in their tears, but some produce more than others. Dogs with light-colored fur are more likely to have visible tear stains from excess porphyrin than dogs with darker coats. No matter what color the coat, visible tear stains are a sign that your dog has more porphyrin in their system than is normal. What Causes Tear Stains? There are a number of health issues that can cause your dog to produce too much porphyrin. Some of the causes are relatively benign while others can be a sign of a serious problem. Tear duct malformation, bulging eyes, shortened muzzle, and eyelid malformation can all cause excessive tear production. But this does not mean that every dog with a squished face is destined to live with tear stains. Tears that contain a normal amount of porphyrin should not leave behind large, dark stains, even if there is an excess amount of tears. But if the amount of porphyrin is even slightly elevated, those extra tears will cause stains to form quicker than they would in a dog that sheds fewer tears. If your dog suffers from entropion, has bulging eyes or a shortened muzzle, or has a tear duct issue and suffers from tear stains, there is likely something else going on inside their body that needs to be addressed. While most people will point out structural issues as a cause for tear stains, the truth is that a predisposition to excess tear shedding acts only as an advanced warning system. Irritants Much like a genetic predisposition and structural malformation, irritants can cause your dog to shed more tears than normal. Smoke, dust, allergens, corneal abrasions, and other eye irritants can all cause excess tear production. Just as with structural problems, these issues alone are unlikely to cause large, dark tear stains. If your dog has tear stains and is producing more tears due to an irritant, you should work to both eliminate the cause of the excess tears and the cause of the excess porphyrin. Infections One of the most common causes of excess porphyrin in tears is excess bacteria or yeast in the body. That is because many bacteria and yeast produce porphyrin as part of their metabolic cycle. Often, tear stains are a sign that your dog has an infection in their eye, tear ducts, mouth, or other nearby location. Ulcers, conjunctivitis, untreated corneal abrasions and nasolacrimal obstructions are commonly associated with the sudden appearance of tear stains. Similarly, yeast infections in the folds of skin near the eye or inside the body can cause tear stains. Other times, excess porphyrin is the effect of systemic bacterial and yeast imbalances rather than a concentrated infection. Liver, egg yolk, sardines, and deep green vegetables all contain a high amount of iron. Many commercial dog foods, especially those containing few quality meat ingredients, will add an iron supplement to their recipe. Consuming iron-rich water can also cause an excess of porphyrin production in the body. City water is typically monitored for excess iron levels and treated to reduce levels as needed. Wellwater, on the other hand, commonly has high levels of metal in it. If this is the kind of water you use, it is worth testing it periodically for iron and other metals. In addition to causing tear stains, excess iron in the diet can also cause iron toxicity. When consumed in high amounts, this metal begins to accumulate inside organs and can easily damage the gut, liver, and brain. Gut Bacteria Imbalances As we covered above, imbalances in the body can lead to an excess of porphyrin-producing bacteria and yeast. Often, these imbalances start in the gut. Many harmful bacteria, including E. Bacteroides and other porphyrin-consuming probiotics are commonly found in the canine gut. These good bacteria are also responsible for keeping yeast populations in check. This can lead very quickly to the formation of tear stains. There are a number of factors that can cause gut bacterial imbalances, including allergies, poor diet, and stress. Antibiotic use is often associated with an initial reduction in tear stains followed by a sudden resurgence of stains. This is because these medications kill off both porphyrin-producing bacteria and beneficial bacteria. Once the medication is stopped these two types of bacteria repopulate the gut at different rates, allowing pathogenic bacteria a chance to take over. Talk to Your Veterinarian If your dog suddenly develops tear stains after not having dealt with the problem previously, your first action should be to take them to the vet. Often, the sudden onset of tear stains is a sign of a bacterial infection in or near the eye. Your veterinarian should examine your dog for signs of infection, scratched cornea, glaucoma, or other common eye infections and problems. If the issue is an infection, your dog will likely be placed on antibiotics. In this case, make sure to follow our protocol below for rebalancing the gut microbiome once your dog has finished the round of treatment. Address High Iron Intake If your dog has always suffered from tear stains or if the problem suddenly presents itself after a move, it is a good idea to have your water tested for high levels of iron. This can be done easily using any number of water quality testing products. If you do find that your water has a lot of iron in it, you should install a purifier on your drinking water tap or switch to bottled water for you and your dog. For this, we recommend AnimalBiome microbiome testing. This test can easily be done from home by collecting a fecal sample from your dog or cat and sending it into the AnimalBiome lab. Foods with excess amounts of carbohydrates are one of the leading causes of non-antibiotic-related gut imbalances in dogs. These types of foods also tend to be the ones that have added iron supplements, which only compounds the problem. By switching your dog to a higher quality diet that features quality meats as the primary ingredient, you can help their gut heal and reduce excess porphyrin production. Oral Tear Stain Treatments There are a number of tear stain treatments available on the market. Many oral tear stain treatments work by targeting the bacteria that produce porphyrin. In fact, one of the most famous tear stain supplements used to contain a prescription antibiotic until the FDA cracked down and forced them to change their formula. Instead, we suggest treating the root of the problem using the methods mentioned above. Topical Tear Stain Treatments While oral supplements tend to be a mask for deeper problems, topical treatments can be useful in removing old tear stains as you fight to prevent new ones. There are plenty of these treatments on the market to choose from, as well. Leave it there overnight and then wipe the area clean in the morning. Repeat as needed until the tear stain disappears. These unsightly stains are almost always indicative of an infection, an imbalance, or excess iron intake. If your dog is exposed to irritants or has structural eyes issues, tear stains will be more pronounced but still usually indicate a deeper issue. Luckily, most of these issues can be resolved with a little investigation and hard work.
Life Span Did You Know? Although a mixed breed can take on any combination of traits from the parent breeds, Lhasa-Poo tend to be friendly, affectionate, and playful dogs that are loyal to their families. This designer dog breed is a small dog with a big heart. They tend to be social and bond closely with their families. They tend to have a sweet, friendly disposition and a playful, energetic personality. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Because their small size makes them susceptible to injury during accidental rough play or falls common to younger children, they are a better fit for older children who know how to interact appropriately with a dog and can handle them gently. As with any dog breed, socialization and training early on are important and the same is true for the Lhasa-Poo. They do make alert watchdogs, but they tend to be friendly dogs, so they do not tend to make good guard dogs. They can be prone to barking, but training early on can help curb this behavior. Lhasa-Poo are highly adaptable dogs. Their small size makes them a good fit for apartment living and they adapt just as well to larger homes. They do well in most climates, but may need to bundle up in the winter to keep warm. Having some basic winter dog products on hand is a big help when the temperatures drop. These small dogs are also sensitive to heat as with most dog breeds. Because these dogs thrive on attention and bond closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone. A mixed breed can inherit the genetic conditions of one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing genetic conditions to puppies. Both of the parent breeds tend to be eager to please and highly intelligent. Although they tend to be easy to train, they can sometimes have a stubborn streak. So, your Lhasa-Poo can be highly trainable, but may have a stubborn streak, which can be challenging for first-time dog owners to navigate. For this mixed breed, it may be a good idea to be prepared to enroll in puppy training and obedience classes. Aside from the training, these classes can help further strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize a puppy. Lhasa-Poo tend to have a long coat that can be wavy or curly and can be clipped short. Although they do not shed much, they do need a lot of grooming in order for their coat to stay healthy. Because their fur is prone to tangles and mats, you will need to brush them daily. If their coat is clipped short, you can likely get away with brushing a few times a week. Bathing is on an as-needed basis, but your Lhasa-Poo will need professional grooming every weeks. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Lhasa-Poo. Nail trimming on a monthly basis is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. So, professional grooming sessions may take care of it. This can help prevent ear infections. Although they are small, Lhasa-Poo tend to have a moderate activity level and can sometimes have bursts of higher energy. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this dog. Try out a bunch of different activities to see what your dog likes to do best. They may enjoy taking an easy hike with you, going for trips to the dog park , or even swimming. A fully-grown Lhasa-Poo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Lhasa-Poo generally lives years. The Lhasa-Poo coat is a coat of many colors. They can have a white, cream, apricot, black, brown, or combination colored-coat. Featured Lhasa-Poo Article. Since it is bred between the Lhasa Apso and the Poodle, it could inherit either a straight silky coat or a curly coat and can come in a variety of colors including white, black, brown, cream, apricot, or any combination thereof. The Lhasa-Poo also has a sturdy body, alert face, small round head, almond-shaped eyes, short legs, and hanging ears. Discover more about our Lhasa-Poo puppies for sale below! Duke If you are up for adventure, then Duke is the dog for you! Duke is a stunning, dark yellow Lab, about 5 years old. He always has that big smile on his face! Duke is no couch potato. Duke loves to play fetch more than anything! He would love an owner who wants to go for hikes, play a good game of ball, maybe take a trip out to the lake. He is a good boy, but would not be an appropriate match for young kids or small dogs, due to his energy level. He will need a home with a fenced yard to play and potty. Duke loves to be with people and is happy to load up in the car for a ride with you. Duke seemed to be afraid of other dogs when he first came into our program. Now he has relaxed and met some nice dogs. He has no fear of them at all anymore. All he really wants is for his person to throw that ball! Duke came to us needing quite a bit of medical care. He is now healthy, with all veterinary care complete and ready to go! Duke is housebroken and does not chew up anything that is not his. If you live in DFW and are interested in providing a loving, forever home for Duke, please complete our Adoption Application. Sage A very lucky little girl is ready for adoption!! Sage is a petite, silver Lab mix. She is about 53 lbs and 2 years old. Sage was so frightened at the local shelter and we just couldn't leave her there. Now Sage is blossoming in her foster home! Sage is a bit timid and will hold on to people that she trusts with both front feet. Once she has a chance to see that she is safe, she runs and does zoomies around the yard! Sage is more of a follower than a leader and gets pretty attached to women. We will be looking for a home with another medium to large dog for her to play with. She would probably love kids to play with. Sage is crate trained, house broken and healthy. She has been spayed, on heartworm prevention, has all of her vaccinations and is microchipped. If you live in DFW and are interested in providing a loving, forever home for Sage, please complete our Adoption Application. We are the proud parents of the smartest, sweetest, most laid back lab, Gracie. Steve Karp and family are incredible to work with and truly care for their puppies and the families who adopt from them. If I could give stars, I would! If you're searching for a lab, look no further. Kara Bunbury We cannot say enough great things about M. Steve is very hands on throughout the entire process- sending weekly updates until the pups come home and remaining in contact thereafter. Everywhere we go people ask what breeder he came from. We got many very cute updates on our soon to be little puppy. We feel honored to be apart of the Michigan Elite Labrador family! Jill Price We were looking for a pure bred lab but were very skeptical about many breeders until we found Michigan Elite Labs. We knew after our first contact with them we found the breeder we were looking for. Stan is 10 months old and we love him to pieces. If you are looking for a pure bred lab you have found the perfect breeder. We would never think of going anywhere but Michigan Elite to get a Lab. Steve is always just a phone call away if you have any questions. Steve is very knowledgeable about his Labrador Retrievers. If you want an amazing Labrador puppy check out Michigan Elite Labradors you will be glad you did! From the first contact with Steve, you are reassured with their dedication to the breed and the MEL family that you become a part of. It's said that one of the best signs of a "good product" is repeat customers. We're proud to be an example of that, with 2 MEL dogs in our home. Temperament, physical health and the characteristics of MEL dogs are perfection. The added benefit of the MEL owners group is also a great perk. We've made amazing friends through the group, which is reinforced each year at the annual reunion. I would not hesitate to recommend Michigan Elite Labradors to family and friends! We looked at all of the photos and knew we would get a beautiful pup but didnt expect all of the wonderful traits they would have. We ended up getting 2! They are beyond my wildest dreams of what a pet should be.So intuitive! When ive had issues, steve has been a phone call away with the answers. Best babies around. You wont be sorry! I believe we were part his second litter and his biggest litter with Cocco and Chopper 14 pups. Both of the parents were beautiful and on site when we went to pick out our first "Pink Collar" girl. We picked up our second "Pink Collar" girl in late .They have become best friends from the beginning. They have never fought or growled at each other and play very well together. The Karp's are very caring and knowledgeable about the Labrador breed. Any questions I have ever had Steve has always been there to guide me and teach me. His extended MEL family has been very inspiring and amusing as we all watch the pups grow into beautiful pets. Kris Thompson Michigan Elite Labradors are wonderful. We had a great experience working with the Karp family. Our little black lab has brought us so many blessings! They are the most wonderful family and breeders. They are extremely reputable and involved with every pup. Steve is always available to you. I called so many times. He is conscientious and really cares about where his puppies go. He is beyond gorgeous. As a matter of fact, I can honestly say that I have never seen better looking labs. Elite labs are very intelligent and have excellent temperaments. Jax was potty trained right away. When I got a trainer, He learned everything immediately. She was so impressed with him and shocked how well he did. She trains Leader of the Blinds dogs so it was a huge compliment coming from her. We have people stop us everywhere to ask if he is a show dog. One of them was a breeder. Another huge bonus is the all the relationships we have made amongst the Elite family. I love all the stories and pictures. Many of us got together for a Michigan Elite Lab's Reunion. All the dogs were gorgeous fun and well behaved. Even all the parents were a blast. I could go on and on about Michigan Elite Labs, but most important is the fact I would never get a dog from anyone else! Upcoming Litter Information There are litters available now! brown english bulldog puppy - Humane Society guidelines note that dogs should have just enough room to fully stand and easily turn around inside their crates. Grown bulldogs stand at about 12 to 15 inches tall, according to Animal Planet's dog breed guide, so make sure your crate is tall enough to comfortably accommodate an upright pooch. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers suggests a crate length of about 42 inches and a width of about 30 inches to 36 inches for English bulldogs to rest in at home. Adapting to Immediate Needs There is such a thing as too much space when it comes to buying a crate, especially if you are planning to crate train your furry friend. Dogs do not like to eliminate waste near their sleeping arrangements, but a too-large crate may allow your bulldog to use the potty at one end and still lounge at the other. If you are raising a bulldog puppy who needs room to grow, get a crate that will meet his estimated full-grown size, but use partitions to block off extra space at either end. Many crates offer dividing panels for this very reason. Home Crate Materials and Capacity If your bulldog can breathe easy, chances are you will, too. Wire crates, which allow plenty of air circulation, are the only way to go with English Bulldogs. Enclosed plastic crates might prove too stuffy for your pup at home. According to the American Kennel Club, bulldogs are predisposed to overheating due to short noses. Most bulldogs range in heft from 40 to 50 pounds, with full-grown female dogs tending to fall in the lower part of this range and male dogs toward the higher end. There are some outliers, too, that will weigh quite a bit above this range. The stress of air travel combined with unpredictable temperature extremes can make flying uncomfortable or even dangerous for a bulldog, and many airline restrictions reflect this fact. When air travel is unavoidable, Farris recommends using a travel crate a size larger than what your bulldog technically needs. In addition to making sure your travel crate meets the unique specifications of the airline, Farris also advocates for a well-ventilated kennel. More Articles. Best Features What I like best about the iCrate is their attention to dog-safety. Bulldogs are not weak dogs by any means. So, the iCrate comes with secured slide-bolt latches for extra security measures. This divider allows you to adjust the living space of the crate. Like with most crates, the iCrate has plastic removable plans that easily slides out from underneath the crate. Such a small feature will save you a ton of cleaning time! If you have limited space in the house, not to worry. The iCrate can be folded up in a matter of seconds. It makes it easy for transportation or storage. But if we had to nitpick, it would be the durability of the frame. However, unless you have an overly aggressive escape artist, this should be fine for most dogs. Check the price and see more reviews about the iCrate. English Bulldog. He has plenty of room to move around and get comfy. Very easy set up, it comes folded in a big box. All u gotta do is prop it up and you are ready to go. March 29, Heather Hiley What size crate do I need for my dog? One question we are asked frequently is what size dog crate do I need for my new puppy or dog? This guide is for those of you who have asked this as you ensure you have everything ready for a new pup or for travelling with your dog. Our guide will cover what size crate you might need depending on your doggie's breed; and how to make the crate comfortable for your four legged friend. Travel Dog Crate Travel safety is of utmost importance and restraining your dog when travelling in the car is now a legal requirement. A travel crate is a really practical option for most people as they sit simply in the boot and can fold flat when not in use. They are also needed for travel by sea and air, another reason to train your pup in a crate whilst young. Size is more important than weight. Dog owners often say to us, what size for a 12kg dog but 12kg can looking very different in a French Bull dog to a Sheltie for example. The crate should be at least 15cm 6inches longer than their body length head to start of tail and at least the same 15cm higher than their shoulder height to ensure they will be comfortable and be able to move around. Depending on whether your dog is still a young puppy or fully grown, you may consider buying a crate to suit their adult size so it lasts a period of time. This means your dog doesn't have to part with their favourite den. Different brands may vary slightly, but most will offer these most common size options. To help with conversions we have added inches as well as centimetres for ease. You might have a particularly large Frenchie or a very dainty Cockapoo. Use our recommendations as a guide and use this with your knowledge of the dog for a more accurate size recommendation. If you have reviewed the information above and still have questions about selecting the right dog cages for your pet, please get in touch with your dog's measurements and we will happily help. We love to help you buy the best products with the right dimensions; and, appropriate dog cage or pet carrier before you spend your money. We do encourage owners to consult their pup's breeder if you are bringing a new puppy home as they hold the specialist breed information. Pet travel crates are made from a collapsible metal frame and fabric material which is just big enough for your dog to stand and turn around in. You can use it when you are on the move with your dog, whether a visit to the vets, to friends or for a staycation. They are also handy around your home when you are not around to supervise your dog. When you have a dog, you will probably be faced with a challenge when it comes to deciding whether or not to crate your dog. You may feel that it is unfair to crate your dog and deny it its freedom to be out and about. However, both professional trainers and veterinary doctors can attest to the fact that crating your dog has a positive impact on its well-being. So crates as dog training tools are highly recommended by professionals. Particularly when on the move. If your dog is used to a crate at home, then they will travel better in a crate as this will not be alien to them. A crate allows your dog to satisfy its natural instinct to be in a den and this prevents it from experiencing problems that un-crated dogs feel. Traveling with dogs can be daunting as they may not be ready to adapt to all the changes around them. With a travel crate, your dog can relax in the crate as you travel and it will feel safe inside its crate because the crate is a familiar environment. More Information Introduction The Bulldog, also known as the English or British Bulldog, is a medium-sized breed that has a distinctive wrinkled face and pushed in nose. As of , it is the fourth most popular breed in the United States. The Bulldog is known as courageous, friendly and calm. It got its name from being used in the 'sport' of bull baiting. This blood sport involved tethering a bull to an iron stake with approximately a foot lead radius. It was the job of the Bulldog to immobilize the bull by the nose and eventually pinning it. Thankfully, such barbaric practices are no longer required of today's Bulldog. Although owners and breeders still defend against the unfair perception that bulldogs are aggressive and vicious animals. Generally, Bulldogs get along well with children, other pets and dogs. It goes well with their patient nature. Bulldogs are medium-sized and medium energy companions. The Bulldog is known as expressive, yet dignified. Appearance The Bulldog has a smooth coat with a low-centered body, wide shoulders and a sturdy frame. Generally, it will have thick folds of skin, wide-set eyes, a flat nose, drooping lips and are known to come in up to 10 colors with 4 distinct markings Black mask, brindle markings, piebald, and white markings. Nutrition It is recommended to provide feed formulated to medium-sized breeds. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available. Grooming Bulldogs benefit from regular cleaning of their face and ears. This can be conveniently done with pet wipes at the ready. In order to avoid overgrowth, splitting or cracking, regular trimming or grinding is recommended. Exercise Bulldogs enjoy walks and require regular moderate exercise to stay healthy. This paired with a careful diet ensures that bulldogs have the best chance of living a full and happy life. Due to their short snout and difficulty breathing extreme humidity and heat should be spent in front of an air-conditioner rather than vigorously exercising. More Information Dimensions English Bulldogs weigh between forty to fifty pounds. Male English Bulldogs are heavier and will generally weigh an average of forty pounds whereas females will weigh about forty pounds. Bulldogs used for show purposes are likely to be as much as ten pounds heavier. The shoulder height of Bulldogs lies between twelve to fifteen inches and they are generally short animals. Persona This dog makes for a great watchdog because of its courageous nature. They do not bark and their appearance is enough to scare away any intruders. Sweet and lovable, Bulldogs have a dignified personality as opposed to a lively one and they are known to be stubborn at times. They get along easily with others and you can enhance this trait by exposing your English bulldog to different types of dogs and people. Though they are slow learners and take some time to train, once they have learned something it will stick and you will seldom find yourself teaching them something that you did a while ago. Their temperament will be influenced by a number of factors such as their heredity, socialization, and training. Thus, it is best for you to get a puppy which has been well bred. You can carry on the good work by giving it proper training and enrolling it in a puppy kindergarten. You can evaluate the temperament of your puppy by visiting its parents and siblings and you can choose a puppy with the temperaments that you prefer. Choosing a puppy in the middle ground, that is one that does not bully others or shy away, will help you shape your puppy into a well-rounded dog. Their inactive nature makes them suitable for various types of homes such as apartments as well as houses with yards. Health It is not always easy to tell what conditions that your bulldog might suffer from until it has reached two years. To be safe, get your dog from a reputable breeder to lessen the chances of getting a dog that is at a greater risk of contracting diseases such as entropion, cherry eye, hip dysplasia, and tail problems. Regular check-ups will go a long way in preventing most of the diseases that your dog is prone to. English Bulldog Protection It is imperative that you follow the right guidelines in the care of your dog to ensure that it lives a long, happy healthy life. Activity To prevent your Bulldog from gaining too much weight which can be problematic to its bone structure, ensure that it gets about fifteen minutes of exercise a day. Due to their inactive nature, they get tired easily and after those fifteen minutes, they will be ready to take a nap. Do not engage them in too much exercise though. A stroll up and down the street will serve your dog just fine. Weather Bulldogs have faces that are pushed in and as such, they do not do well in extreme temperatures. When they are exposed to high temperatures, they breathe very heavily as they are not able to dissipate heat efficiently. This makes them prone to suffering from heatstroke. If it is hot, ensure that your bulldog is in an environment with adequate air conditioning because if it spends as little as half an hour in high temperatures of about eighty-five degrees, it can die. Ensure that they have a lot of water by them in such hot temperatures to help them stay hydrated. Training Bulldogs are quite slow learners and for you to train them effectively, make the training sessions fun and fill them with positive reinforcement in the form of treats and a lot of praise. Once your Bulldog learns a command, it will remember it for a very long time. Safety Bulldogs are not natural swimmers as their heads are very heavy and tend to drag them down into the water which can lead to drowning. If you have a pool or a pond in your yard, keep an eye on your dog to prevent it from falling in. Feeding The amount and type of food that you give your bulldog will depend on its size, metabolism, age, build and its activity levels. Consult a professional trainer or a vet to help you in coming up with the right diet for your dog. Leaving food out at all times encourages your Bulldog to eat massive amounts of food and due to their inactive nature; this can easily lead to obesity. To prevent this, limit eating times to twice a day. Hygiene Getting your dog accustomed to hygiene practices while it is still young prevents the occurrence of many diseases. You can use baby wipes to wipe the insides of wrinkles and ensure that the insides are completely dry to avoid the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Introduce your Bulldog to nail clipping at an early age as this will make the experience much more pleasant for the two of you. Give your dog a weekly exam as you bathe it so that you can look out for warning signs of diseases. Crating English Bulldogs The size of the crate you choose will depend on the size of your dog.
