The first example of this type of dog, called Sultan, went to live with a lady in Hawaii, where other breeders saw him as an inspiration and this is how Australian Labradoodle puppies started. Both the International Australian Labradoodles Association and the Australian Labradoodles Association of America are working hard to incorporate more intergenerational breeding so these dog breeders can register this type of dog as a purebred dog. Its gentle, obedient and intelligent personality combined with a hypoallergenic coat make it ideal for family members with allergies, but it also makes an excellent service or therapy dog. In general, Labradoodles need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. You can also enroll them later at a Labradoodle puppy alumni school for proper training. Friendliness What makes Labradoodles the perfect puppy compare to other dog breeds is their ability to get along with just about anyone. They inherit this trait from their Labrador retriever parent, a breed also known for its outgoing nature. You can trust your labradoodle to form friendships with everyone, from children and older adults to strangers and other puppies. Thanks to their affectionate, sociable personalities, Labradoodles make great pets for first-time owners, families, or anyone looking for a companion. Intelligence Thanks to their poodle parent breeds, Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent dogs. Because Labradoodles are intelligent, they often crave mental stimulation. Labradoodle Puppies Grooming Our Labradoodle puppies for sale have a variety of coat textures that dog owners enjoy, but in general, their low shedding coat needs brushing at least twice a week. Not only does this keep them tangle-free but it also removes excess debris from their coat, keeping them fresh and hygienic. Regularly trim the hair around their eyes and in between their paws to prevent these problem areas from causing irritation. Pooches with fleece coats tend to have longer fur and benefit the most from going to a professional groomer — although every dog loves getting pampered once in a while. Life Span Did You Know? A Labradoodle is a popular designer dog breed. It is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. However, it did not become popular until when the mix was specifically bred to create hypoallergenic guide dogs. Featured Labradoodle Article.

Why use a Golden Retriever Harness? We already owned a little scallywag of a Cockapoo called Lupin when we decided to take the plunge and get a SECOND dog — at the time, Lupin was on his own a lot while we were at work, so we wanted him to have some company. We also just really wanted a Golden Retriever, so when the opportunity arose, we went for it. They both require lots of exercise due to their relentless energy levels Lupin and rapid growth Ghost. Golden retrievers are one of the larger breeds of dogs. As with all big dogs, when they pull on their leash — you can feel it. If your dog is on a collar, this could result in discomfort to their neck if they suddenly pull when out walking. In more severe cases, this could lead to throat injuries and damage to the trachea. A good, well-designed harness is one that fits well, is comfortable and can be used to reduce pulling behaviour and help with training in your dog. In addition to the discomfort — this can result in increasing the pulling behaviour as they attempt to escape the unpleasant stimulus. Types of Golden Retriever Harness Vest Dog Harness Often made from nylon or mesh fabrics, these walking harnesses are soft, lightweight and inexpensive. Not designed to take any severe pull or as a training harness — vest harnesses are for general wear. They are suited for dogs who are well behaved on a lead, elderly dogs who may need assistance or puppies who are getting used to a harness for the first time. Front and Back Clip Harnesses Most commonly seen harnesses, mainly for dogs who tend to pull. A back clip harness has a steel clip at the back for attaching the lead. A front clip is usually a second webbed hoop at the front designed for a double-ended training leash like a HALTI. Both ends can clip onto the front and back attachment point giving more control over your dog. Dog trainers often recommend these for better training and reducing pulling behaviour. They tighten when your dog pulls. For experienced dog handlers and trainers only. However, this is a summary for your Golden Retriever. Measure the widest part of the chest with a tape measure. This will be a few inches before the front legs. Make sure you wrap the tape all the way around. Add a few inches to the total. This will allow for some movement as well as growth. Measure the circumference of the neck with a tape measure. Depending on the harness type, you may not need to do this — but for those that go on over the dogs head — you need to check it will a fit without straining b will not slip off. Measuring your dog is crucial. Too tight and the dog harness will be uncomfortable. Too loose and it could slip off or they could escape — leaving you holding a harness and leash but no dog. There is a wide range of options available, from standard body-fitted versions like the Embark to more training-oriented types like the Gentle Leader or EasyWalk harness. When choosing, take into account: His size. The Golden Retriever, a happy-go-lucky breed known for its lustrous namesake golden coat, is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. These kind, intelligent dogs are known for being obedient and loyal companions. Because Goldens are so easy to train, they are very popular for service dogs and search and rescue work. Golden Retrievers make great family dogs because of their loving nature and trustworthiness. They are also active companions. Like other retrievers, Goldens are a sporting breed, originally bred to be an ideal gundog. They were first created in the Scottish Highlands during the mid-to-late 19th century by a man known as Lord Tweedmouth. He was looking for a strong swimmer capable of retrieving wildfowl that had been shot. This is why most Goldens love to swim, play fetch, and spend time outside with their families. Golden Retrievers are a medium breed. According to the AKC, the breed standard for Goldens is their height is between 23 and 24 inches for males and between .Males generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds, and females between 55 and 65 pounds. Of course, some Goldens will be larger or smaller than the breed standard. Energy Level and Exercise Requirements Golden Retrievers are a moderate-to-high-energy breed with a zest for life. Because of their history as working dogs, Goldens need plenty of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. In addition to frequent walks daily, Golden Retrievers should also get plenty of exercise like swimming and playing fetch. Goldens really enjoy spending time with their people and walks, jobs, and hiking are all great ways to spend active time with your pup. Because they can have a lot of energy, especially when young, most Golden Retriever owners find it best to take their dog out on a harness. Because of their history as working dogs with a sturdy build, Golden Retrievers are a strong breed that requires proper training with the right tools. For most Golden owners, the best and safest way to walk their dog is with a harness. Harnesses are a great way to retain control of your dog while training. What is the Best Golden Retriever Harness? For an active and energetic breed, the best Golden Retriever harness is one that is comfortable for both you and your pooch. Goldens can have a lot of coat, so you want a fully adjustable harness that will give you a proper fit, making the harness escape-proof. You always want to look for a harness that will help prevent your active Golden from pulling. This will help keep you and your pup safe while out and about. At Joyride Harness, we created our harness with Golden Retrievers and other active breeds in mind. Our harness has a specific three-ring design to stop your dog from pulling. Most customers attach a standard leash to one of the side rings to stop their Golden Retriever from pulling forward. For really heavy pullers, you can also attach a double-ended leash to two rings, giving you additional control. The other benefit of Joyride Harness for hyper Goldens is our built-in handle. Handled dog harnesses are great for Golden Retrievers because it gives you the option to quickly grab your dog, even if you accidentally drop the leash! And the best part? If you have trouble keeping your Golden out of trouble, our heavy-duty harnesses are durable and easy to wash! They easily stand up to water, mud, and whatever kind of mischief your pup gets into. Most adult Golden Retrievers will fit in our XL dog harness, which is suitable for dogs between 60 and 85 pounds. Most customers choose this size as the best dog harness for their male Goldens. However, smaller females may find the Large to be a better fit, which fits dogs pounds. For Golden Retriever puppies still growing, you can utilize our size chart to find the best harness to fit them at their current size. Here are reviews from real pet parents who think Joyride Harness is the best dog harness for their Golden Retrievers! My Golden Retriever, Riley and I love using the harness. The golden was running very fast, rolling around in the grass and when he came back to the owner, there was no wear and tear on it. Our golden, Brady, is still in training and needs to be corrected. The top handle has been great while doing this and also makes it really easy when putting the harness on and off. This harness has made it much easier to train and get ready for walks. It is so simple to put on our dog Snowflake and adjusting the harness is so easy. She is quite the puller, and although we have not put in serious training time with the side rings, from the few instances that I did use them she pulled herself right in a circle. This is exactly as advertised. Snowflake is a very willful Golden Retriever and we have tried countless harnesses that never lived up to expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend this harness to any dog owner regardless of breed or attitude. The item shipped out within a day and was at our front door within three days from the order date. If you are looking for a dazzlingly simple harness that is well built and looks fancy on your pet then look no further. Easy slip on and snap off. Recommend getting the seat belt strap and use it with the harness at all times! Awesome again! This is our 3rd joyride harness for my little golden guy. Key Features Fully padded straps Ergonomic design No sensitive area, from the underarm to the throat, will be at risk when your dog has this harness on. Even during intense exercises, they will stay comfortable. Since golden retrievers have sensitive skin, look for a harness that can be adjusted across the chest, belly, and back to prevent chafing and skin irritation. Reflective Straps: Reflective material will keep your goldie visible even in low light conditions, thus increasing safety during walks. Hence, strong metal buckles are essential for keeping your dog safe and secure during walks. No-Pull Design: Is a necessity if your golden retriever likes to pull during walks. A no-pull harness comes with a front ring that offers better control and can help you in training your dog how to heal. Ultimately, whichever you choose, it will teach your dog to stop pulling and ensure that you have some fun walking instead of running after your goldie. To sum up, golden retrievers are highly energetic and playful dogs who need a lot of exercise to stay out of trouble and in great shape. Taking your pooch on long walks is always a great idea, but you will need the best harness for a golden retriever if you want to have fun and be safe. You May Also Like. It is an adjustable harness that comes with two metal attachments for leashes, with one being on the front and the other at the back. The front attachment clip is meant for dogs who pull. If the dog starts pulling when the leash is attached to the front clip, they will be turned around instead of going forward. After a while, this will get frustrating, and they will learn that it is best not to pull. This makes it a great tool for teaching your feisty one how to be obedient. Once they have learned not to pull, you can switch to the back attachment clip. This harness will not give you any problems when it comes to putting it on or taking it off. The straps are also adjustable to allow you to find the size that fits snugly on the animal. This ensures that you do not have to worry about the Golden escaping the harness. This harness also comes with reflective strips to ensure that your dog is visible and therefore, safe when walking at night. The only downside to this harness is that the straps loosen after extended periods of intense activity. Nonetheless, the Rabbitgoo dog harness more than makes up for that drawback in quality and functionality, which is why we have it as our top pick.

This pup will melt your heart with its antics and adorable little puppy-dog eyes. This breed goes by a variety of other names, including Pookimo and Eksapoo, and they will get along with just about everyone. They make great pets for novice owners as well as for people looking to get their first dog. The Eskipoo will spread love, joy, and laughter wherever it goes! It is for this reason that the past of the Eskipoo is a bit difficult to make out. It is entirely possible, and in fact likely, that this breed existed naturally through accidental breeding between the American Eskimo dog and the Poodle before any efforts to intentionally bring the two together began. Intentional efforts by breeders likely began in the s in the United States since hybrid dog popularity was skyrocketing in the region at this time. The Eskipoo is not a registered breed but has several devoted fans all across the world. Personality and Temperament No matter how old the Eskipoo gets, this dog will stay a puppy at heart! They are incredibly loving and will show you a great deal of affection. They are friendly dogs who will get along well with almost anyone, no matter their age, with just a little bit of socialization. Their gentle and playful nature means they make great family dogs, getting on well with children and adults. These are incredibly smart pups thanks to their Poodle genes and tend to grow a bit too attached, which may lead to some anxiety issues cropping up. They tend to make a lot of noise by howling and barking, so early training is necessary to keep such behaviors in check. Eskipoo Size On average, the Eskipoo will grow up to be around 9 to 15 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 13 to 20 pounds. Eskipoo Health While Eskipoos are generally healthy dogs, they may inherit some genetic illnesses from their parents. They usually enjoy good health as a result of mixed-breeding, which leads to some level of hybrid vigor due to the increased gene pool. Make sure to check the health clearance certificates of both parents before getting an Eskipoo puppy. Do not buy from breeders that cross dogs younger than 2 years old since that is when most genetic illnesses rear their heads. Some issues that you Eskipoo may be predisposed to include diabetes, hip dysplasia, allergies, as well as progressive retinal atrophy. Eskipoo Care and Training These pups tend to become overweight, due to which regular exercise is incredibly necessary. While they may not need very intense exercise, they must get some physical stimulation every day. A walk in the park or a game of fetch should be more than enough. These are also very smart dogs, which means they get bored rather easily and cross over into destructive territory. To keep such behaviors at bay, it is best to keep them engaged with lots of toys and trinkets. Indoor playtime is always a good idea. The Poodle and the American Eskimo are both very trainable dogs. The Eskipoo inherits this trait with a rather eager-to-please personality. This, combined with their intelligence, means that they will be picking up tricks and desired behaviors in no time. Feeding All Eskipoos have different nutritional needs, which is why it is best to speak to a veterinarian who can assess these needs and help you design a sustainable feeding plan for your pooch. Steer clear of free-feeding and divide their daily recommended serving into two to three separate meals to prevent gastric issues. Coat Color, Types, Shedding These pups are generally low-shedding and have a coat that is thick and curly, mixing the coats of both parent dogs. Eskipoo Grooming Regular brushing is necessary for the Eskipoo. This will ensure that their coat stays healthy and free of any tangles, knots, or matted fur. If the Eskipoo inherits a longer coat, it may need occasional trimming. Bathe them only when needed since too much soap and water may irritate their skin by drying it out. Deciding on a Eskipoo The Eskipoo is a right fit for you if: You want a dog that does not have very rigorous exercise needs You want a dog that is easy to train You want a low-shedding dog The Eskipoo is not a right fit for you if: You want a guard dog You want a dog that can be kept in a kennel You want a dog that can be left alone for long periods Getting a Eskipoo How Much is a Eskipoo Puppy? These fluffy little dogs are affectionate and gentle. People tend to fall in love with their playful, energetic personalities. Although the Eskipoo is not currently recognized by the AKC, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. These little dogs love to play, love to cuddle, and love nothing more than getting attention from their favorite humans. Their affectionate, gentle nature and playful, friendly personality make them a great fit for families. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they do tend to be open and friendly with strangers once introduced, they also tend to bark to alert you of people, animals, etc. Although they are high-energy dogs, Eskipoos are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes with fenced yards where they can run. Also, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. Because these small dogs bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not do well with long periods of time alone. This can also make them prone to separation anxiety if you do not work on this with them when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in an Eskipoo include luxating patella , diabetes, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, and eyelash abnormalities. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents, and about any health tests that have been done. Eskipoos are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Although they can get bored easily, they tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They thrive on positive praise and reward, and tend to work hard to gain attention from you. The Eskipoo coat still ranges from the curly Poodle coat to the longer, thicker American Eskimo coat. An American Eskimo coat will shed moderately year-round and heavier as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath is all this coat needs. Nail trims once or twice a month keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily dental care , like brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste, helps prevent dental diseases later in life. Although these dogs tend to be little, they are not couch potatoes at all. In fact, they are high-energy dogs that require walks, playtime, and some time to run every day to be happy and healthy. Thankfully, they also tend to be versatile and athletic dogs that are up for almost anything if it means spending more time with you. Just make sure puppies finish growing and developing, and you get vet approval, before you tackle more intense, higher-impact activities. A fully-grown Eskipoo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Eskipoos generally live for years. An Eskipoo is also referred to as a Pookimo and an Eskapoo. Featured Eskipoo Article.

Be prepared to pay a premium price for a puppy from them, because these are huge dogs and not very easy to purchase on impulse. There are breeders and rescue groups that take care of these dogs and most of them provide free spaying or neutering if you purchase one from them. They will usually have the dogs immunized, but you need to ask upfront because not all breeders and rescue groups will do this. It is very important to ask about spaying or neutering because if you get a dog that is not neutered or spayed when they are puppies, it can make them more aggressive towards other dogs and people as well as being harder to housebreak. Make sure that you are getting over the gestation period because the longer it is, the larger the puppy and the more difficult it is to train. When buying German Shepherd puppies for sale in Fayetteville NC, make sure that you know what the price range is for the particular dog you want. The prices can be very different depending on the breed and the markings on the puppies. You should also ask about the grooming costs because some groomers and rescue groups want to do it for free. Sometimes, the cost is very high, especially if the dog has some kind of medical condition or if the breeder has had to spend a lot of money caring for the dog. If you know anyone who has German Shepherd puppies for sale in Fayetteville NC, that person might be able to give you some good advice. It is well known that breeding a female dog before they are mature can cause health issues, but what about a male. What is the right breeding age for male and female Golden Retrievers? A male Golden Retriever can mate after just 12 months. Female Goldens are more complicated; you should wait until after their third heat cycle before breeding, which usually occurs around 18 to 24 months of age. It's best to wait two years before breeding a female to ensure they are fully developed. Before breeding a Golden Retriever, it is essential to understand what heat cycles are, the importance of the third cycle, and physical development. If your female Golden Retriever is bred too young, you should know how to make sure she is healthy and ready to conceive. Males A male Golden Retriever can reproduce after six months of age and gains full sexual maturity at 12 to 15 months. Males can mate at any point in time since they don't follow hormonal cycles. If the male maintains his health, he may stay fertile and sexually active into old age. Breeding males is a pretty simple concept. But, unfortunately, several other factors need to be considered when breeding a female. Females Like males, female Golden Retrievers become fertile around six months of age during their first heat cycle. This cycle repeats every six months but we'll get to that later! Female Golden Retrievers should never be bred during their first heat cycle. Dogs are not fully developed at this point in their lives. If a female becomes pregnant this early in her life, it can cause stress during pregnancy and pose more health risks as her body develops. Even though she may be fertile, she isn't physically or mentally mature. Young females that are bred during their first heat cycle are at an increased risk of becoming pregnant and developing health complications. Since Golden Retrievers are classified as a large breed, they physically mature around 18 to 24 months. Since we don't want to breed a female before they reach maturity, you should not breed a female Golden Retriever until after her third heat cycle and she reaches two years of age. Understanding Female Heat Cycles No one wants a surprise puppy litter or a bunch of failed breeding attempts. So, understanding the heat cycle of your female Golden Retriever is essential to create your desired outcome. A female's heat is her body's way of preparing for potential conception. In other words: your dog's reproductive cycle. There is not a definite number but Golden Retrievers usually stay in heat for around three to four weeks. However, your dog is fertile for about nine days. A Golden Retriever's most fertile period is days into the heat cycle. However, the highest fertility period lasts about five days, so you should try to breed two Retrievers between the 10th and 14th day of the female's heat cycle. Stages of the Female Heat Cycle Proestrus: the female is preparing for pregnancy. Intact males will become attracted to her, but she will not allow breeding. This stage typically lasts nine days. You'll see signs such as a swollen vulva and bloody vaginal discharge. Estrus: The ovaries release an egg at the beginning of this stage. As the estrogen levels in your dog's body decrease, her progesterone levels will increase. This means your female is fertile. She is ready and willing to mate. This stage also lasts about nine days. Diestrus: This stage will last about two to three months or until the female Golden Retriever gives birth provided she's pregnant. She will no longer allow males to mate. A bloody discharge may continue but will gradually stop. By the end of this stage, the hormone will level out. Anestrus: This is the final stage of your dog's cycle. She is not fertile and will not allow breeding during this stage. Most female Golden Retrievers go into heat twice a year, though some larger dogs may only menstruate once a year. The ovarian activity of a female starts to decline in the sixth year of her life. Most females stop conceiving after they're seven, so the female Golden Retriever breeding age is from two to five years of age. We know that we should wait until the end of the third heat cycle of a female Golden Retriever before breeding. But what happens if a Golden Retriever gets pregnant too early? You need to allow your Golden Retriever to fully mature physically. If your Golden Retriever gets pregnant before reaching maturity, it will put extra stress on her. The physical strain of carrying a belly full of puppies puts a burden on her growing joints. Pregnancy will also suck nutrients from your dog. Since the female Golden Retriever is young, her immune system isn't fully developed. This makes her more vulnerable to diseases and infections than a mature dog would be. Bacteria can infect her vaginal tract and cause stillbirths, miscarriages, and the death of newborn puppies. Your dog may even die while giving birth to the puppies. Since her pelvic canal may not be large enough for puppies to fit through, if this happens, it will endanger both the puppies' life and her own. In addition, if this happens, she will need surgery, which increases the chance of health complications. Since she is not mentally mature, she is more likely to reject the puppies than a mature mother. Motherhood is mentally and physically taxing on both dogs and humans! You can consult your veterinarian about terminating the pregnancy. Your veterinarian will perform a full risk and side effect evaluation on your Golden Retriever. During this evaluation, your vet will try to determine when the dog was bred so they can evaluate how far along she is. If you are not sure of the date of conception, they will most likely perform an ultrasound to measure the fetuses and determine their age. Once you have determined the stage of pregnancy there are two options in terminating the pregnancy. Desexing a pregnant female can be done up to five weeks after conception. Desexing is the process of removing the ovaries from your dog. She will not be able to have puppies after this procedure. Your dog will require significant aftercare following the procedure. Crate rest is crucial for the 10 days following the procedure. The incision wound will also need to be kept clean and dry to prevent infection. The second option of terminating a pregnancy is abortion. Pregnant dogs can have an abortion up to 45 days after conception. Your veterinarian will most likely use Alizin , which is injected in two doses, 24 hours apart. Before deciding to terminate a pregnancy you should consult with your veterinarian, you should never attempt to terminate a pregnancy at home. If you decide to allow the pregnancy, your dog will need extensive observation and monitoring as the pregnancy continues. It is important they are both physically and mentally healthy. They should have decent muscle tone and a balanced weight before breeding. Physical health isn't everything; good mental condition is also essential when breeding two Golden Retrievers. A mentally stable female will make a better mother than one that's insecure or has an unstable temperament. A month before breeding, the female should go through a pre-breeding physical examination by a vet. You want to get her checked for common health problems, like joint dysplasia and eye disorders. If she has these issues, pregnancy will be more difficult and she may pass the issues onto the puppies. Vaccinations for both parent Golden Retrievers should be current, and the female should be tested for parasites. DNA Post-Partum Care Caring for your dog after they give birth is just as important as caring for them while they were pregnant. You should keep your dog on a high-calorie diet, not only is she providing nutrients to her puppies, but she is also chasing them around and caring for them. Making sure your dog has a private space for her and her puppies is crucial in making sure she is able to care for them properly. Provide a clean, dry, peaceful area of the house for your dog. With too much traffic around her, your dog may become distracted and neglect her puppies in favor of you. If you are worried about your dog neglecting her puppies, a good way to monitor them is by weighing them. Should the puppies not gain weight appropriately, contact your veterinarian. You may want to constantly love on the new puppies, but you need to be cautious of how you do this. Give your dog time to adjust to the new responsibility she has, and allow her to come to you with the puppies. Around weeks, you should begin weaning the puppies from the mother. Weaning is done by slowly incorporating dog food into their diet and separating them from their mother for increasing periods of time. If you are considering having more liters of puppies from your dog, you should consult your veterinarian to make sure your dog can carry another litter safely. I recommend waiting at least one heat cycle after weaning before attempting to breed again. This will allow your dog to recover from the last pregnancy. Main Takeaways Male Golden Retrievers reach reproductive age after 12 to 15 months of age Female Golden Retrievers have their first heat cycle after six months of age. Females should not be bred until after their third heat cycle, which happens after 18 to 24 months of age. Mating will be most successful between the 10th and 14th day of the female Golden Retriever's heat cycle, as she is most fertile during this period If your Golden Retriever develops an unwanted pregnancy, there are options to terminating the pregnancy Conception before physical maturity can cause health problems Performing a pre-breeding health check ensures that the female Golden Retriever is healthy and ready to conceive Post-partum care is extremely important when trying to raise a successful litter. You should give your dog space to bond with her puppies Waiting at least one heat cycle before breeding again will help your dog recover from the previous pregnancy. However, there are some signs to look out for to determine when it is time to stop mating them. So, when is a Golden Retriever too old to breed? Female Golden Retrievers are too old to breed at eight years of age. After eight, they are more likely to experience health issues, and kennel clubs will typically not register puppies born to mothers older than this. Males can keep breeding until their sperm is not viable, or they have health problems. This article may contain affiliate links and loyalgoldens may earn a commission if a purchase is made. Unlock your goldens natural intelligence and see just how quickly problem behaviors disappear. This is the best at home dog training I've ever used! In general, males become sexually mature earlier than females. Male goldens can reach sexual maturity anytime after they are 5 months old. Typically, their first heat will occur when they are 6 to 15 months old. A female Golden Retriever should be ready to breed when she is two years old. By this time, a female Golden has gone through two or three heat cycles, and she has reached prime breeding age. Responsible breeders do not breed female goldens during their first heat. Females at this young age are still growing, so pregnancy is hard on their developing bodies. Plus, females need to be mature enough to feed and take care of their puppies. However, owners should always consult with their vet to make sure their goldens are old enough and healthy enough for breeding. Additionally, female goldens should not be bred during consecutive heats. Constantly mating them will wear down their bodies and not give them the time they need to heal between pregnancies. Male goldens, on the other hand, can start breeding much earlier. Males do not have to feed or take care of the puppies, so their maturity level is not as important. However, male dogs sometimes have problems producing enough semen if they are too young. They may also lack the experience they need to impregnate or not even be interested in having sexual relations. Typically males become more fertile around months of age, so it may be better to wait till then. Owners should contact a vet when their male goldens are sexually mature to determine if they are ready to breed. Most kennel clubs would not accept an application to register a litter of puppies if the female was 8 years old or older at the time of breeding. For registering purposes, female goldens should not be bred after they turn eight years old. Most breeders retire their female goldens when they are years old. Female dogs do not have menopause, so they can technically keep reproducing into old age. However, more health complications arise in older dogs, so it is unwise to keep breeding females over 8. The guidelines for male goldens are less stringent. If studs are healthy, they can keep breeding for a long time. Healthy Golden Retriever males often remain fertile well into old age. However, as males age, their sperm count goes down. It makes it harder for them to get females pregnant. Similarly, males can develop arthritis and other age-related conditions which makes it harder for them to mount females and impregnate them. They experience complications during pregnancy or start displaying health problems that harm them or that could be inherited by their puppies. Had More than Four Litters It is generally recommended that female goldens stop reproducing after they have four to six litters. Most vets recommend that females stop breeding after they have four litters, but some dogs may be able to have six safely. Pet owners should consult their vet and look at their kennel club rules before deciding how many litters their goldens should have. Pregnancy Complications Some health conditions can become worse when dogs get pregnant. If females have any of these health issues, they should stop breeding: Diabetes Pyometra Hip dysplasia Additionally, female dogs can have health problems during pregnancy. If female goldens experience any of these problems, it may be wise to stop breeding them. Sometimes the problem that occurs during one pregnancy can happen again in future pregnancies. These include: Having multiple miscarriages Having an unplanned c-section Prolonged labor and birth If Goldens develop any of these problems or any other health issues, owners should stop breeding them immediately. They Have Inheritable Health Issues If golden retrievers display any inheritable health problems, they should not be allowed to mate since these conditions can be passed on to their puppies. Some of the most common inheritable conditions experienced by golden retrievers are blindness, hip dysplasia, and heart problems, such as aortic stenosis and dilated cardiomyopathy. Blindness is caused by many inheritable diseases, such as hereditary cataracts, glaucoma, and uveitis. All of these conditions are experienced regularly by Golden Retrievers. Hip dysplasia is another inheritable condition in which the hip joint does not form properly. This condition is often passed on from mothers to their puppies. If female dogs with hip dysplasia get pregnant, they may experience increased pain and problems in their hips due to the added weight from the puppies and the increased stress on their hips. Aortic stenosis is an inherited condition that makes it so the blood leaving the heart is partially obstructed. It makes the heart have to work harder to pump enough blood throughout the body. Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM is a disease that makes the heart so weak that it cannot pump blood through the body. The cause of DCM is still undetermined, but it is ideal to be partially genetic. Male Golden Retrievers Male golden retrievers can reproduce into old age. However, as they get older, they are more likely to have trouble getting females pregnant. Here are some signs male golden owners can look out to determine if it is time to stop breeding. Health Issues Arise As with female goldens, if any health issues arise, male goldens should not allow mating. These include conditions that are harmful to the studs themselves or conditions that can pass from the males onto their offspring. Goldens should always be checked at the vet before mating to ensure they are in tip-top shape. Smaller Litter Size Than Before If male dogs have stud multiple times, their owners should have a rough estimate of the number of puppies typically produced. While the female determines litter size, if studs have become less fertile, that can influence how many eggs get fertilized, thereby making the litter size smaller. If the litter size goes down significantly, then male goldens may have a high amount of abnormal sperm or a low count of healthy sperm. While there are some potential treatment options for this, in some cases, it may be a sign that it is time for them to stop mating. If this occurs, they may not want to do the deed with female dogs. Discover how to train your Golden Retriever by playing games : 21 games to play with your Golden that will make them smarter and better behaved! After eight, health complications are more likely to arise. Additionally, most kennel clubs will not register puppies that were born to mothers who are eight years old or older. Male Golden Retrievers can start breeding earlier and can continue to breed throughout their life. Males should stop breeding when they experience health problems, cannot get females pregnant, or are no longer interested in mating. Golden Retriever Heat Cycles Explained: Complete Guide Posted on May 9, by Galen Kauffman Share: Golden Retrievers are not only adorable and loving companions but also fascinating creatures when it comes to their reproductive cycles. As a first-time Golden Retriever owner, you may find yourself wondering how to handle your furry friend during her heat cycle. Fear not, as this article will provide you with all the essential information and practical advice to navigate this journey with ease. Key Takeaways: Golden Retrievers go through heat cycles, also known as estrus, which is a natural part of their reproductive process. Responsible pet ownership includes considering the best time for breeding, potential health risks, and the importance of spaying or neutering. Plan for potential behavioral changes and be patient and understanding with your dog. Stock up on washable doggy diapers and designate a comfortable resting area for your dog during her heat. Allowing your Golden Retriever to roam freely outside during heat may lead to unplanned breeding. Designate a comfortable and secluded area for your dog to rest during her heat. Regularly clean and sanitize the designated area to ensure a hygienic environment. The first heat cycle usually occurs around the age of six to fifteen months. Dogs usually experience two heat cycles per year, although this can vary. Breeding a Golden Retriever during her heat cycle is not mandatory and should be a carefully considered decision. Responsible breeding requires thorough research, proper planning, and finding suitable mates. Estrus: This is the fertile phase, lasting around 5 to 13 days. Your dog will be receptive to mating and may seek out male dogs. It lasts approximately 60 to 90 days and involves a gradual decline in hormone levels. Anestrus: The resting phase of the reproductive cycle before the next heat cycle begins. Silent Heat Sometimes, Golden Retrievers may experience a silent heat, where there are minimal or no obvious signs of the estrus phase. This can make it challenging to detect when your dog is fertile, emphasizing the need for vigilance and responsible pet management. This irregularity in timing can be confusing for pet owners and may require additional monitoring. Be sure to spend quality time with her. Increase playtime and mental stimulation to keep your dog engaged and distracted from mating urges. Limit outdoor walks to avoid encounters with intact males and reduce the likelihood of unplanned breeding. Consult with your veterinarian before using any natural remedies to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your dog. If your dog displays signs of extreme discomfort or unusual behavior during her heat, consult your veterinarian. Any indications of illness or abnormal bleeding should be addressed promptly by a professional. Timing is crucial for successful breeding, so accurate monitoring is essential. Various tests, such as hormone level assessments, can help determine the ideal time for mating. Unplanned pregnancies can occur if your dog mates with an intact male during her fertile phase. Proper management and supervision are essential to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Keep her away from intact males to avoid unwanted advances. Phantom Pregnancy in Golden Retrievers Signs A phantom pregnancy, also known as pseudocyesis, is when a non-pregnant dog displays signs of pregnancy. Common signs include nesting behavior, enlarged mammary glands, and maternal instincts. Phantom pregnancies can last for several weeks and can be emotionally challenging for your dog. Provide comfort and reassurance during this time, and consult your veterinarian if necessary. Differentiating False vs. Real Pregnancy A false pregnancy can closely mimic the symptoms of a real pregnancy, making it difficult to differentiate without professional assistance. Consult with your veterinarian to confirm whether your dog is experiencing a real or phantom pregnancy. If you are ready to experience all the joys of doggy pregnancy, you may be wondering: can dogs be too old to get pregnant, and how old can dogs still have puppies? I was very surprised to discover that dogs are never too old to have puppies! In this article, I will tell you everything you need to know about responsible breeding and dog fertility. Knowing that your pooch is an elderly citizen will help you determine whether it is safe and appropriate for your dog to get pregnant in the first place. Most dogs enter their senior years when they are around seven years old; however, the aging process is slightly different for small and large breed dogs. A tiny Chihuahua , for example, is considered a senior when they reach 11 years of age. On the other hand, a giant breed such as a Great Dane is considered a senior by the time they are five years old. The aging difference between smaller and larger breeds is mainly due to their size. Several studies have confirmed that larger breeds tend to age much faster than their smaller counterparts. Therefore, how old is too old for a dog to have puppies is directly related to the size of that particular dog. Unlike people, female and male dogs technically remain fertile their whole lives. However, their fertility and ability to whelp healthy puppies decrease as they get older. A healthy male dog can still sire puppies until very old age. In fact, most professional breeders will retire male dogs much later than their females. According to AKC rules, you can register a litter of puppies sired by a male dog that was no more than 12 years old at the time of mating. In practice, most reputable breeders will retire their male dogs when they are between 10 and 12 years old. Age is just one of several factors that affect the ability of a male dog to sire puppies. The age at which a male dog can have puppies also depends on the quality and quantity of its sperm. So, many professional breeders will check the sperm count of their male dogs regularly, at least once a month, to see if they are still capable of siring litters. Additionally, breeders will check many other things to determine whether their male dogs are too old for breeding and ready to be retired. Low conception rate is another sign that a dog is getting too old to sire puppies regularly. This means that a male dog fails to get a female dog pregnant during ideal conditions: one mating per day and a completely healthy female. Furthermore, a breeder may decide that the male dog is too old to sire puppies if their partner continually produces smaller litters, or if the puppies are weak and sick. According to the AKC rules, a dam must not be more than 12 years of age at the time of mating, if you want to register the litter. However, a lot of breed clubs, including the UK Kennel Club, set eight years as a maximum limit for breeding female dogs. However, at this grand age most female dogs have birthing difficulties and serious complications are often seen during labor. When they become pregnant, older female dogs may have trouble giving birth, and seeing stillborn puppies in a litter is unfortunately quite common. Additionally, older dogs may have trouble producing enough milk to nurse their puppies, who often die if not bottle-fed by their human caregivers. Due to all these risks and complications, most reputable breeders decide to retire their dams when they are around five or six years old. To determine whether or not to retire a female dog from a breeding program, the breeders consider the same factors as for male dogs. Taking all of these criteria into account can give you a good idea of whether it is safe to continue breeding your female dog or not. Our Golden Retriever , Raven was a breeding dog. She was retired by her breeder when she was 6 years old at which time we officially adopted her. If you own a female dog, the most important thing to remember is that she can get pregnant at any time during her life. Although older dogs are less fertile than their younger counterparts, there is still a risk of unwanted pregnancy. Now that you know that dogs can become pregnant their entire lives, talk with your vet about the best ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies. We use these tools to help keep our dogs separate. You read that right: Your cute, fluffy puppy can have puppies of its own! Once they reach sexual maturity, male dogs can mate at any time, even every day! Females, on the other hand, can mate only when they are in heat, which usually happens twice a year. However, some dogs can go into heat up to four times a year, while others will be ready to mate once a year, depending on their size and breed. Male dogs generally become fertile earlier than their female counterparts, usually when they are around five or six months old. Toy and small breeds such as Chihuahuas become sexually mature earlier than large breeds. In most cases, you should wait until your dog is at least one year old to mate him with a female. Keep in mind that large and giant breeds need more time to fully grow, so you should wait until your pooch is 18 to 24 months old to breed him for the first time. If you decide to use your male dog for siring litters, you will first have to ensure that he is completely healthy and fertile. Your vet can help with that and provide health clearances that your dog is a qualified stud dog ready for breeding. Once a male dog reaches sexual maturity, he remains fertile his entire life. However, their sperm count tends to be low during the beginning and the end of their reproductive cycle. Unlike male dogs, who can mate literally every single day once they reach puberty, female dogs can breed only when they are in heat. Female dogs usually reach sexual maturity when they are six months old, but smaller breeds can go into heat as early as four months of age. As with male dogs, you should wait until your female is fully grown before attempting to mate her for the first time. The size and breed of your dog will determine when the best time is to mate your female for the first time. Smaller breeds reach adulthood earlier than their larger counterparts and can consequently become pregnant safely much earlier. After having their first estrus, also known as heat or season, female dogs usually go into heat every six months until they get old. However, this time frame can vary from one dog to another and can depend on the size of the dog. Generally, smaller dogs go into heat more regularly than larger breeds and can produce more litters during their lifetime. The heat cycle is divided into four stages: proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus. The estrus phase also lasts around nine days, at which time the female is fertile and will allow being mounted by a male dog. In most cases, ovulation happens within the first 48 hours of the estrus phase, but this can vary greatly. This phase happens whether or not the dog has gotten pregnant, and some dogs may develop signs of false pregnancy during this stage. Lastly, the anestrus phase is the time when a female dog can no longer become pregnant and is a period without sexual activity. In most cases, this stage lasts between three to four months. Technically, both female and male dogs can have puppies their whole lives. The actual labor is also more difficult and risky for older dogs and is commonly accompanied by complications. Older dogs also may have problems producing the milk and nursing their puppies. What is the age limit for breeding a dog? Can a 9-year-old dog have puppies? A 9-year-old dog can technically get pregnant and give birth to a litter of puppies. However, an older female dog can absolutely get pregnant if mounted by a fertile male during her heat cycle. To prevent any health problems and unwanted pregnancies, keep a close eye on your dog while in heat and consider spaying her. Is it bad for a 1-year-old dog to have puppies? Small breeds reach adulthood when they are one year old and can safely have puppies if they are done growing. A one-year-old Great Dane is still a puppy, and it would be bad for a growing pup to get pregnant and have to take care of a litter of newborn puppies. Conclusion Knowing how old dogs can be to have puppies is an important piece of information if you plan to breed your dog at some point in their life. While technically dogs are fertile and can have puppies their whole lives, older female dogs are at risk of premature labor, stillborn puppies, and birthing complications. Before breeding your pooch, talk with your vet and have your dog throughout examined. Are you a breeder? Have you worked with our bought a dog from a breeder? Up to which age can dogs actually get pregnant and have puppies? The quick answer is that dogs can have puppies nearly for the entire duration of their lives. Dogs as old as 12 years or older can theoretically become pregnant. However, these late pregnancies are often associated with complications for both mother and pups. Table of Contents Can a dog be too old to have puppies? Most women stop being able to conceive children sometime in their mids around halfway throughout their lives. This is unique among all animals — all other species are able to become pregnant and give birth until much later in their life. Dogs are no exception to this rule. While human women go through menopause and do not have a cycle afterwards, dogs do not experience menopause. Female dogs have heat cycles until their death or until they are spayed. While they are theoretically able to conceive puppies even beyond the age of 10 years old, this is associated with a lot of risk factors and should be avoided. At what age should a dog stop having puppies? Most kennel clubs require dams of litters to not be older than 8 or 9 years old. After that age, the risk for complications during pregnancy and birth rises drastically. Even if your female gets pregnant, she could experience: A difficult pregnancy The need for an emergency c section A singleton litter meaning only one single pup is born Stillbirths of one, several or all pups of the litter In addition, nursing a litter of puppies is tough even for a younger female in good shape. A female that is 10 years or older will become very weak even with the best supplements and probably require the owner to substitute some milk because she cannot produce enough. However, this does not mean that you should breed your female every heat cycle until she is 9 years old. If she has any kind of complications during pregnancy or birth during the first litter, you should not even breed her more than once. If you start having litters from your female dog when she is 3 years old and they are back-to-back meaning she gets pregnant in two consecutive heat cycles , then she will be too old to have more puppies by the time she is just 5 years old. Many owners are too keen on breeding their dogs and producing puppies. Keep in mind that your dog is a pet first and foremost and needs your care and attention to her wellbeing. Can a 12 year old dog get pregnant? Theoretically yes. You should always assume that if your female dog is in season, she could become pregnant if she is together with an intact male. However, if your dog has not been pregnant throughout her life, the chances of conceiving at 12 years are pretty small. If you are planning on breeding your female, you should do so much earlier. The later the first litter of a female is, the less likely it is that she will conceive. A female who had litters at 6,7 and 9 years old could become pregnant again at 10 years or above A female that has never been pregnant before is quite unlikely to have a first pregnancy at 10 years However, you should not rely on the chance that age will prevent a conception. If your dog is in season, you have to keep her away from intact males. Should I try to get my old dog pregnant? No, you should absolutely not try that! In addition, the risk for complications is very high and it is likely that not all puppies and the mother will survive in good health. The older a female is, the higher the risk for pyometra a potentially fatal uterus infection. If your female has not had a first litter until the age of about 6, you should spay her in order to prevent pyometra and other conditions associated with being intact such as ovarian cancer or mammary tumors. While dogs can get pregnant throughout their lives, like humans they have the best chances for a normal pregnancy and easy birth if they are young and healthy. There is no upside in breeding an old female — but many downsides. Do not put your girl through the physical demands and risks of a pregnancy in her senior years. An older dog should be allowed to live out her life happily and healthily, without a geriatric pregnancy. The bottom line Age is not a certain form of contraception in dogs. While it is not likely that a 10 year old female will conceive easily, it is also not impossible. Unfortunately, pregnancies late in life are associated with numerous risks in dogs. You should absolutely avoid breeding a dog older than 8 or 9 years old. If your dog has not yet had a litter, even this is too old. As soon as you decide that you do not want to breed your female again , you should have her spayed. The older a female dog is, the higher the risk of serious medical conditions of the reproductive system becomes. In addition, spaying also is the the easiest way of contraception in dogs. Emotional Sensitivity Several elements influence the price of a toy poodle. It is necessary to determine if you want to adopt a rehomed toy poodle or acquire a puppy. The cost of rehoming a toy poodle puppy is significantly less than the initial purchase price. The following are some factors that have an impact on the cost of toy poodles. Lineage The lineage of the toy poodle puppy is another aspect that influences the price of a toy poodle puppy. Puppies whose parents, grandparents, or any other parent in his lineage has won a dog show award are more valuable. Health Examinations Health and genetic testing will be performed on the puppies and their parents by ethical, respected breeders. That is expensive and necessitates considerable risk on the part of the breeder. That is a reflection of the price of their puppies. The breeder will conduct genetic testing on the parent dogs to offer you a companion that is the least prone to acquire problems. Location The cost of a toy poodle puppy is also affected by your location. A greater cost of living indicates that raising litter will be more expensive. Toy poodles, on the other hand, are significantly less expensive in the Midwest, where the cost of living is much lower. You must, however, consider the expense of getting the toy poodle puppy from that location to your home. Some hues are more scarce than others. Some owners are looking for a one-of-a-kind hue in a toy poodle. Because there are so few special toy poodles, breeders typically demand a premium for them. Phantom black with brown paws and eyebrows , Sable a reddish-brown , red and white party white with red patches , and tri-colored are some of the most unusual and costly hues black and white party with brown eyebrows and paws. These hues are likely to be more expensive than more popular colors like black, brown, cream, white, grey, and silver. Important Characteristics of a Toy Poodle Toy poodles are charming household dogs who like being in the spotlight. They are bright and respond well to obedience training, although their companionable temperament might cause separation anxiety. They get along well with youngsters and other pets, and their diminutive stature makes them ideal for living in small settings. Some of the basic features of a toy poodle are discussed below. Appearance The height and weight of a toy Poodle and a standard Poodle are the only major differences. They have the same coat colors, markings, and characteristics as a standard-sized Poodle. They were made for friendship and called toys since they are less than 10 inches. This dog looks to be well-built and proportioned. Their nostrils will be black, and their eyes will be incredibly dark and sparkling. Males should stand between 7 and 10 inches tall and weigh pounds. Females should be inches tall with a weight of pounds. Colors and Coat They come in a range of hues, making it difficult to pick just one. Blues, greys, browns, creams, and more tones in between make up this palette. The red toy Poodle and the black toy Poodle are the most popular. There is almost no shedding in their coat, which is fantastic for allergy sufferers. It will, however, take longer and demand more work than other dog breeds. Their coat is prone to matting. That leads to unpleasant illnesses if not properly cared for them. Every four to six weeks, the coat should be groomed. Temperament Poodles are extremely intelligent dogs. They have strong personalities and learn things quickly and believe themselves to be an important member of the family. They believe that they are being left out of family events, they will become irritated. This temperament is, of course, a double-edged sword. Toy poodles are loyal family dogs who like being the center of attention, learning new skills, and going on walks. Emotional Sensitivity When it comes to stress, Toy Poodles are particularly sensitive. If the folks in their house are experiencing family troubles, they may become sick to their stomachs, with digestive disturbances and worry. Toy Poodles are calm and sensitive canines that love to live in a serene and happy environment. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. In this section, we will explore some of these factors, including breeder reputation and experience, pedigree and bloodlines, health testing and genetic screening, and location and demand. Breeder Reputation and Experience A reputable and experienced breeder will typically charge more for their toy poodles. This is because they invest time and resources into providing proper care and socialization for their dogs, ensuring they produce happy, healthy puppies. Toy Poodle sits calmly at the garden. Pedigree and Bloodlines Toy poodles from champion bloodlines or with strong pedigrees will typically cost more than those without. This is because a high-quality pedigree is an indicator of potential show or breeding success, and these dogs often have a higher demand. You can expect to pay a premium for puppies with distinguished bloodlines. Health Testing and Genetic Screening Breeders who perform extensive health testing and genetic screening on their breeding dogs will likely charge more for their puppies. This is because such testing helps to minimize the risk of passing on hereditary health issues, ensuring you bring home a healthy toy poodle. Location and Demand The cost of a toy poodle can also vary depending on your location and the overall demand for the breed in your area. In regions where toy poodles are particularly popular, you may find that prices are higher due to increased competition among buyers. Keep in mind that these factors can all impact the cost of a toy poodle, but the most important consideration should always be the health and well-being of the puppy. Be willing to invest in a quality toy poodle from a reputable breeder, as it will pay off in a happy, healthy companion. The owner carries her Toy Poodle. Price Ranges for Toy Poodles When looking to purchase a toy poodle, there are different price ranges depending on factors, such as quality, breeder reputation, and location. This section will discuss two specific categories of toy poodles: pet quality and show quality. Pet Quality Pet quality toy poodles are those which may not meet the breed standards or possess minor faults. However, they make lovely pets and companions. Show Quality Show quality toy poodles adhere to strict breed standards and are often bred for dog shows and competitions. However, this level of quality ensures a well-bred puppy with good lineage. When is a Toy Poodle full grown? Ongoing Expenses While the initial cost of purchasing a Toy Poodle is a significant expense, it is also important to consider the ongoing costs associated with owning one of these small and intelligent dogs. Food and Nutrition Feeding your Toy Poodle a well-balanced, high-quality diet is essential for their overall health and well-being. The cost of food will vary depending on the brand, ingredients, and size of the bag you buy. Before You Adopt Healthcare and Vaccinations Regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations are necessary to keep your Toy Poodle healthy. Grooming costs can vary based on the services you choose to provide for your dog. A Poodle playing with a toy in the grass. Tips for Purchasing a Toy Poodle When considering the purchase of a toy poodle, there are several key factors you should take into account prior to making your decision. This section will discuss four essential considerations to guide you in your search for a healthy and happy pup. Research Reputable Breeders First and foremost, always select a reputable breeder for your toy poodle. Conduct thorough research by checking online reviews, asking for recommendations, and verifying awards and recognitions if applicable. Be cautious of red flags like: Irregularities in communication. If you want to get a show dog from champion bloodlines, expect to spend more. Purchasing the purebred Miniature or Toy type of Poodle is pricier than buying other dog breeds from a backyard dog breeder. The Standard Poodles are typically less expensive than Toy Poodles since they deliver more purebred puppies per litter. The price of a Standard Poodle, as well as Miniature and Toy Poodles, does not often change between male and female dogs, but larger dogs are associated with a higher maintenance cost compared to smaller Poodles. A premium price tag also usually means you have a high-quality Poodle puppy from purebred breeders which could save you a lot of money in the long run. Female Poodle: Which Is Better? Factors Affecting the Cost of a Poodle Puppy Many people find Poodles expensive, but what is it about Poodles that makes them so costly? Well, there are many reasons why these fluffy dogs cost thousands of dollars. The size, age, health, lineage, and AKC registration of a Poodle puppy are essential considerations when determining puppy prices. Here are other factors affecting the price of a purebred Poodle: Age: Younger purebred Poodle puppies are far more costly than older puppies on average. This is due to the high demand for young pups. Meanwhile, purchasing an adult Poodle could save you at the very least a few hundred dollars. Appearance: Purebred Poodles that sport rare Poodles coats color are priced higher than others. Purebred Poodle breeders dedicate years to learning how to breed high-quality puppies. Those that gained recognition for their hard work often put higher price tags on their Poodles than others. Bloodline: Since they are bred for exhibition, champion Poodles will be the priciest. These are the canines that compete in athletics and breed representation. Health Screenings: Purebred Poodles are at risk of health issues, such as seizures. This means Poodle breeders must take measures to ensure the health of their pups. As a result, they will have to invest additional money to nurture proper Poodle health. Registration Papers: Your Poodle must have the required registration papers to be registered with a kennel club. This list contains the significant factors that influence the price of a Poodle. When purchasing a Standard Poodle puppy, keep them in mind and any additional fees that may be associated with it. A purebred backyard breeder might ask you for things like reservation charges, pet delivery, vaccines, and pup accessories that are not included in the Standard Poodle price range. Poodle costs of adoption will vary depending on where you get your dog. If you choose a senior or special needs adult Standard Poodle, the fee is significantly reduced or even free entirely in these cases. Poodle puppies can be found in abundance in local shelters. If you decide to adopt a Poodle, you can be assured that you will get a dog that has been well-cared for, unlike the ones found in a puppy mill. Here is the list of the essential things that people who love Poodles must prepare for: Food and Treats: Poodles can be picky eaters. Hence, it is important to invest in the right kind of high-quality food upfront. Poodles will need a diet high in fats and proteins. Bed: Because the Poodles are active dogs, it will require a nice bed. The size of your Poodle will determine which mattress is appropriate. Crate: A crate is a must-have for required vet visits or crate-training your Poodle properly. This is a must-have item for Poodles that enjoy running and playing. Toys: Teething is unavoidable for young pups, and restlessness can lead to destructive behavior. These toys are a great approach to alleviating these concerns while keeping your dog happy. A slick brush to clear unkempt hair and knots, a metallic greyhound comb to remove tangles and separate hair strands, a blow dryer, grooming clippers, nail clippers, and a toothbrush to maintain proper oral hygiene are all you need. Furthermore, deworming is a crucial step in keeping healthy pups. Initial Vaccine Shots: If you opt to purchase an unvaccinated Poodle puppy, you will be responsible for the expense of their first round of vaccinations. This is also another way of keeping your Poodle healthy. Neutering and Spaying: If you purchase Standard Poodle puppies, most likely, it is still intact. It is suggested that the puppy be spayed or neutered between six and nine months. Microchip: A microchip, about the size of a rice grain, should be implanted on your Poodle. This can be scanned by vets or other canine specialists for your contact info, health records, and health problems. Miscellaneous Supplies: Useful goods such as poop scoopers, cleaning materials, and urine pads could make Poodle care much more manageable. Agility classes are another fantastic entertainment opportunity for your toy poodle. This breed is a miniature athlete, excelling in agility courses. However, the costs of caring for your pup may be more or less based on the area you live in and the things your dog needs in any given month. For example, you might not need to buy cleaning supplies or get your dog groomed every month, but the above estimates should give you a good idea of what you could be spending. Costs such as dog walking, obedience classes, pet sitters, and boarding facilities can add up fast. If you choose not to invest in pet insurance, you should create an emergency fund for unforeseeable incidences. You can cut down on some of the high costs by shopping for the best store to buy your food and supplies. You can even take grooming lessons or watch YouTube videos for tips on how to groom your toy poodle yourself to save on high grooming costs. Use couponing apps for your phone or internet browser to find the best deals on pet supplies. Honey is a great Chrome extension that finds all the best coupon codes for nearly any website. Rakuten is another extension you can use to earn cash back on your purchases. We consulted different breeders and pet adoption centers for the most accurate price range. During the interviews, we collected data on what affects the cost of each dog despite them being the same breed and the recurring costs of owning a toy poodle. By the end of the post, you will clearly see how much financial investment a toy poodle is. Like any other pet, the toy poodle requires a considerable financial commitment upfront and throughout their life. Several variables affect how much a toy poodle costs, which explains the huge price variation. A few factors that justify the price variation are: Color Some toy poodle colors are rarer than others. Some people may be looking for a toy poodle in a standout shade that is not easy to find. Since there is a small number of these special colored puppies, their price will increase. For example, Phantom will likely be pricier than others like black, silver, or brown, which are more frequently available. Whether You Are Adopting, Buying, or Rehoming Rehoming a pet is different from adopting one in that you either acquire a puppy that has been abandoned or are given one by someone unable to keep the dog for their reasons. On the other hand, you can receive a pet through adoption by going to a dog adoption facility. Although there may still be a fee to fund their time at the facility, it will usually be considerably cheaper than purchasing one. Additionally, your adoption price will probably include vaccinations, neutering, and microchipping costs, saving you a few more bucks. Buying puppies is usually expensive because the breeder has already incurred the cost of veterinary care and breeding the pups to ensure they come out perfectly. Lineage The bloodline of a toy poodle puppy is another significant factor that affects the pricing. Puppies are more priced if anyone in their line of descent has received any kind of recognition, say a competition. Costs differ between canines with a clean medical record and those with underlying or inherited health issues. Pets with any health issues will be cheaper than those in tip-top condition. Breeder If you buy from a reputable, high-end breeder, prices will generally be higher. This is because the breeder incurs significant costs related to maintaining their business, which is paid for by selling puppies. It is assumed that a high-end breeder will produce pups of a higher caliber than their cheaper counterparts. While this argument may have some truth, it is not always true. You can also get pups that are healthy from a start-up breeder. In addition to having less going on than an established breeder, new breeders must set fair prices to attract more clients. Extra Costs Of Owning A Toy Poodle The decision to get a new puppy is exhilarating, but frequently people fail to consider the financial obligations that come with it adequately. In fact, you may take this as your starting point. You might not realize how expensive it is to raise a puppy. Here are some extra costs to factor in your decision to get a toy poodle: Spaying or neutering Consider having your dog spayed or neutered if you intend to use it for breeding. Spaying a pet is more expensive than neutering it. Toys And Treats The well-being of your dog depends on toys. Negative behaviors can be delayed by using toys. Treats help reinforce good behavior in your furry buddy. Deworming Deworming is another factor that should not be overlooked when considering the additional costs of owning a pet. In fact, puppy age is the age range most susceptible to worm infection. To keep your dog healthy, ensure you deworm your puppy thrice a year. Vaccinations Immunizations are crucial because they will protect your puppy from illnesses and infections. Your veterinarian will determine the cost of the puppy immunizations. The first shot is administered between 6 and 8 weeks, while the second is a week or two later. Suppose you buy your toy poodle from a reputable breeder or rescue organization. In that case, the vaccinations will already be done before you pick up your new pet. Remember, you must give your dog a booster vaccination every year. Training Costs Depending on your demands, puppy training sessions might range in price. If you want an intensive training program that will teach your furry buddy all the essentials in a matter of days, that will be more expensive. Private lessons are also more expensive than group training. Services for dog walking and dog daycare are commonly available. Ensure you know what works for your pet because not every dog should go to doggie daycare, especially if they have trouble mingling with other dogs or lack social skills. However, there are occasions when it is vital to avoid boredom and give dogs that would otherwise spend long days alone the human-canine connection they require. All in all, do not leave your pup alone for long hours. Apart from avoiding a mess in your house, your dog needs to go outside and play. While making your decision, understand that dog walking is cheaper than daycare. Insurance Pet insurance will help you save money on your total veterinary expenses if your dog gets hurt or becomes ill. If you have pet insurance, you may relax knowing that you will be covered financially if your dog or cat is sick or wounded. Without pet insurance, you face the risk of being hit with a hefty bill in the unfortunate event of the worst-case scenario because veterinary visits have unexpected costs. Make sure the service provider you choose caters to the specific breed you have, covers any underlying issues your pet may have, and is within your budget. Where You Live The cost of a puppy also depends on where you reside; in California, for example, since it is among the most expensive states, the price for a toy poodle will be higher than in Massachusetts due to the drastically lower cost of living there. You may opt to get your pup from a cheaper state; however, you also need to account for the price of getting the toy poodle puppy there and back to your residence. In the excitement of getting ready to bring a new puppy into your home, it can be easy to overlook how much of a financial commitment the dog involves. Making a budget for your new animal family member is a great way to prepare yourself for unforeseen costs. Less - The Toy Poodles have a shoulder height of up to 25 cm 10 in and weigh kg lbs. Poodles are very elegant in appearance. They have a long, narrow muzzle, slight stop point at which the forehead meets the muzzle , dark eyes, and wide ears. Toy Poodles have flat backs, straight, docked tails and small, oval feet. Their length is approximately the same as their height. The Toy Poodle is sensitive, intelligent, lively, playful, proud, and elegant. It bonds closely with family and makes a great companion. Toy Poodles are very smart, obedient, and graceful, which makes them one of the most popular pets in the world. The Toy Poodle is bouncy, alert, and usually eager to play. Toy Poodles are more energetic than Standard Poodles, and more likely to bark. In 18th and 19th century Europe, the Poodle served a wide variety of purposes, including duck hunting, guiding, and later circus performing, from whence the modern grooming style likely arose. The Poodle became a popular pet for the French aristocracy, and in time was officially adopted as the national dog. Poodles were imported to America in the 20th century. The origins of the poodles are still discussed with a dispute over whether the poodle descends from the old French Barbet breed or from Germany as a type of water dog. Giving your dog time and attention, making sure they have plenty of toys and opportunities to run around and play outside, and working on training regularly are all things that you can do to keep your dog entertained each day. It is a good idea to plan ahead and consider starting a savings account, where you can put away a portion of your paycheck so you can pay for unexpected vet costs. Your dog might end up damaging something in your household as they learn obedience training, so you may incur extra costs unexpectedly for this reason. These are just more reasons to consider maintaining a savings account for your dog. Owning a Toy Poodle on a Budget If you can find a Toy Poodle for free or at a rescue center, utilize state-funded service programs like those for spaying and neutering , and if you opt for less expensive commercial food, you can take care of a Toy Poodle on a budget. However, costs should never be cut when it comes to checkups, vaccinations, illness treatment, and items for nutrition and comfort. Learn how to potty and obedience train your dog yourself instead of hiring a professional trainer. You can find training books at the library and training videos online for guidance. Instead of utilizing a grooming service, buy clippers and a good brush, and do the grooming yourself. Instead of buying expensive toys, make them out of old clothes and unbreakable objects that you find around the house. Go on long walks rather than gas-guzzling drives. Spend time at the dog park instead of using electricity at home watching television. Make your own doggy treats utilizing food in your kitchen instead of buying commercial ones. Daily exercise, a proper diet, and plenty of attention will go a long way. Regular checkups can help catch problems before they become too expensive to address. Conclusion Toy Poodles are adorable little dogs that deserve plenty of love and attention throughout their lives. The puppies still hold close to their mom, but they already make their attempts to communicate with you. Week 3 It is a "chatting time". Now the puppies should fully open their eyes. The ear canal is also should be fully formed so the small Boxers start hearing their voices and barking. Be ready that your little travelers will make an attempts to leave their place. Now they have everything to learn the world better! Although it is not desirable to allow them to run about the house as they can harm themselves. Connect one or more boxes together, thus, making a big "playing ground". This way, your puppies will have enough place to communicate and play with each other. And it will be a safe place! Week 4 On the 4th week you may start feeding your puppies with solid food. Make a mixture containing 14 of puppy dog food and 34 of water. Begin with small amounts. You should habituate your puppies to solid food gradually and slowly as their digestive system cannot accept it at once. You can also remove extra heating. The temperature in the room must be 72 F 23 C. Week 5 It is the time when you can give toys to your puppies. You still have to check their weight, but not necessarily each day. Normal weight should vary between 2 lbs. Gradually make the food more solid by adding more puppy dog food and less water. Mother-dog is tired and exhausted so she would like to spend less time with her children. It is a perfect time for your interaction with the puppies. They will be very happy to play with you. Week 6 On the 6th week you may introduce your puppies a new world. Be ready that your small Boxers will become more active and start eating a lot. However, it is still too early for training. It is better to involve them into outdoor walkings. Try to walk them separately and beware of other dogs. Your puppies will be really fascinated to feel the warmth of the sun and soft touch of the grass! Week 7 You Boxer puppies do not require nursing any more. It is a great time when they grew up enough to involve you in their quite active games. Outdoor walks must become a daily routine. You should also take mother-dog with you as well. She will start educating her children all necessary skills. This week is perfect to pass to the usual routine of dog feeding, grooming, exercise and playing. Week 8 During this week the puppies should have their first vaccinations. If you are not going to keep all the puppies, it is a good time to find a new home for them. Make sure that you give them to the kind and loving people, who will take care of their small Boxers. If you are going to keep all or some puppies, you can begin training them as well as falling back into your normal dog care schedule. But at the moment, they need your guidance. For now, this includes sleeping next to you for the first few weeks, maybe even longer. Just have their crate or bed close to wherever you sleep. Our articles on sleeping through the night and establishing a nighttime routine will give you extra tips on getting through this phase. A puzzle toy or Kong will work great at making them feel like you leaving them is actually something quite fun. Potty training All new puppy parents expect potty training to be on the cards. It will help to remember your Boxer pup is a bit of a goofball. For now, we definitely want to let your pup get used to you and settle into their new home. Teach your puppy about surfaces — Different surfaces can feel strange to pups. Use surfaces like grass, moss, paving and sand. Basically, make their tail wag and we bet yours will too. Teach your Boxer their name. Teach your Boxer puppy to sit. Remember what we said about Boxers and their jumping? Recall — Trust us. Preventing resource guarding Resource guarding is where your dog fiercely protects something they have and will do everything they can to keep hold of it. Dogs can resource guard food, a toy, even a person. You can do this by teaching them that hands and touch can be a good thing. As always, back up your soft touches with some treats. Remember that consent is also a thing with dogs! Never force your Boxer to be handled or pick them up against their wishes. Socialization exercises to do this week Training to do this week Husbandry Tasks to do this week — Fireworks — Watch the world go by outside your house — Play dress up. This gives the owner an opportunity to see their dog at such a young age and then watch them quickly grown into strong and large adults. If you are purchasing a Boxer puppy, the dog should be at least 8 weeks old. In many regions it is illegal to have a puppy at a younger age. Up until 8 weeks, the puppy will need to be nourished by its mother. We're Home! That Boxer newborn puppy that you picked out has rapidly matured into an 8 week old and it's time for your new family member to join the household. Bringing a puppy home should be well planned in advance. If you have a large family, other members must be told to keep the environment calm and peaceful until your Boxer puppy has a chance to gain their bearings and become used to its new home. Have everything you need so that you do not need to suddenly run out to the store for a forgotten item. Do not allow the puppy to be rushed at by many people wishing to hug, pat and smother him or her with kisses. That can come a bit later. Your new Boxer must be approached gently and with warm voices. Puppies are a good, robust size but are still fragile. It is very sad when a puppy is stepped on accidentally; this can cause great harm. From birth to the 1 year mark, trauma is the leading cause of fatalities with this breed. Children must understand how to gently treat a pup. Very young children should be watched during interaction. All members of the home must be very aware of what may be underfoot. Your Boxer puppy should be given a tour of the home. Do not expect your new pup to know where everything is! Show him or her where they can find their water, where to expect their meals to be served, their dog bed and their toys. A puppy needs the security of knowing where to find what they need. Puppies will need quite a bit of care from you. This includes: Feeding - A puppy should be fed times per day. More feeding information can be found in our Feeding section. Only high quality puppy food must be given. This will be a time of rapid growth and your Boxer puppy needs the right dog food for optimal health. Vaccinations - All puppies will need the full schedule of vaccinations. This is absolutely vital to the health of the pup. If the budget is tight, your dog's veterinarian should be able to provide a discount or recommended animal clinics which provide shots for a very minimal fee. This includes that absolutely necessary Heart worm prevention medication, as well. Comfort and safety - Boxer puppies are rambunctious. They will jump, bounce and play. They will need loving attention and interaction with their owner or owners. Plenty of room to play, lots of toys and acts of love are crucial to the physical and emotional growth of a pup. A puppy is just learning about its world; yelling or hitting is never called for. Through love, patience and understanding a puppy will learn what is expected. Negative reactions from its owner will simply teach the puppy to be afraid. Housebreaking - This should begin as soon as you bring your puppy home. Read more in our housebreaking section. When started early and with consistency, your Boxer puppy will soon learn where it is appropriate to eliminate. A schedule - Puppies know nothing about the world except for what you show them. It is important to keep a puppy on a schedule that they can depend on. Normal times for baths, exercise , walks, feedings, grooming , play time and sleep time are recommended. Some Things to Expect The first year will be full of changing behaviors and a change in physical appearance. Here's what you can expect: A Boxer puppy will whine if he is hungry, wants attention or once he is learning house training, if he has a bathroom need The time to instill training for barking and other behavior is now - before habits can form Puppies are super hyper , but will also sleep quite a bit - Anywhere from 15 to 18 hours per day including night time and daytime naps The first year is one of rapid growth, but do expect starts and stops. As your Boxer reaches adolescence, there is sometimes a brief period of stalled weight gain at which time a Boxer may appear too skinny. This typically only lasts a few months before that final gain happens that allows him to fill out. Puppyhoood is the time to do socialization training - You'll want to introduce your puppy to as many people, other dogs, events and situations as possible so that he learns control and gains self-confidence. Health Check A Boxer puppy should be checked over every day to check for certain issues. Eyes- The eyes should be clear and bright. Any excessive discharge is a reason to go to the veterinarian Ears and nose - These areas should be cleaned each day with a damp, soft washcloth. Discharge of any color is a reason for a checkup with the vet Breathing - A puppy's breathing should always be clear and easy. Forced breathing, wheezing, coughing or other strange sounds must be taken care of immediately through the dog's veterinarian or closest animal hospital Limping - Puppies may be a bit clumsy or wobbling when very young. However limping is never normal. This must be brought to a vet's attention ASAP Tank - 9 months old Photo courtesy of owner: Jaymie Conner Skin - It is normal for a Boxer puppy to have some loose skin around the neck area and there will be some facial folds. These areas can hold in moisture which can lead to a fungal or bacterial infection. Moisture can accumulate when the pup drinks or when he drools. Keep the area nice and dry to prevent any problems.
