Dog domestic dog The American Bulldog is a large, muscular breed of mastiff-type that was used as stock dogs, catch dogs, and guardians on farms and ranches. John D. Johnson and Alan Scott are widely regarded as the forefathers of rescuing the breed from extinction. Small farmer and ranch owners used this all-around working dog for many tasks including farm guardians, stock dogs, and catch dogs. These dogs were not a bona fide breed by modern standards as was the case for most other dogs; kennel clubs and breed registries did not exist until , [6] at least two centuries after the Old English Bulldog first migrated to America. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Old English Bulldog had many different strains for cattle-droving, bull-baiting , farm dogs, and butcher's dogs. In America, no records remain, but rather landrace strains are acknowledged that initially depended on where a dog's master originated in England, the majority of which were bred to work as evidenced by accounts of the age in local newspapers and written inventories upon death. Later, breeding decisions were dependent on the best working farm dogs, despite breed or background. Later, in states such as Texas, several separate strains of the " bulldog "-type dogs were kept by ranchers as utilitarian working dogs. Other dogs in time became guard dogs on plantations. The bulldogs were the settlers' only means of sufficiently dealing with the vermin. Johnson scoured the backroads of the South looking for the best specimens to revive the breed. During this time, a young Alan Scott grew an interest in Johnson's dogs and began to work with him on the revitalization process. At another point, Johnson began crossing his original lines with an atavistic English Bulldog from the North that had maintained its genetic athletic vigor, creating the Bully type American Bulldog, also known as the Johnson type or the Classic type. All over the world, they are used variously as "hog dogs" catching escaped hogs or hunting feral pigs , as cattle drovers, and as working or sport K-9s. American Bulldogs also successfully compete in several dog sports such as dog obedience , Schutzhund , French Ring, Mondioring, Iron Dog competition, and weight pulling. Some lines have been trained successfully to compete in Obedience and Weight pull competitions. Other lines have competed at high levels in Sport work such as French Ring and Schutzhund, although they will probably never match the German Shepherds or Malanois at high levels in this field. In view of the fact that there is very little proven "bulldog" blood in todays dogs, it seems inaccurate and downright misleading to refer to them as bulldogs at all. We are in the process of using DNA profiling in an attempt to determine the exact make up of these lines, but it is likely that science will not allow accurate results for some time yet. I believe in positive reinforcement, so hearing the blank gun going off at a distance was something the dogs liked-food. It was a means of conditioning. The pups grew up listening to that. They became used to it. When the dog was 20 yards away or so and chasing a bird, I'd fire a couple of shots into the air. But to do that, a dog has to like birds first. Again, this was positive reinforcement-introducing the noise of the gun while they were doing something they enjoyed. And some simple keys. First, don't surprise a young dog by shooting a firearm over its head if it has never heard a gunshot. Second, get the dog involved in an enjoyable activity such as eating, playing, or chasing birds , step back 35 yards, and shoot low-volume rounds as opposed to 3-inch magnum shotshells to introduce gunfire. Third, go slow. Do not try to introduce a dog to the gun in a single morning by burning up a couple of boxes of ammo; start with low-volume loads and work your way up over time. So what's a trainer to do if his dog shows signs that it might be gun-shy? Some dogs never get over it. As I said, it's a lot easier to avoid than correct.
