A couple months back she started having bad, bad seizures. Her mom was working with her vet very closely to finding the right dose of meds. They found it, but then she got pancreatitis. She died with her mom at home and being loved on. We remember them all in our thoughts and prayers. The day baby Phoenix has been waiting for finally came today. She has her forever family! She also had some early gifts from Santa to take with her. At only 10 months old, Phoenix still has a lot to learn and many years in her happy home. Do you have a full-time career with long hours and many out-of-town trips? A person who is dedicated to their career is not a candidate to own a wolf or wolf-dog; these animals need lots of supervision and attention. Wolves in a pack never stray from each other for more than a few hours. This leads to extreme separation anxiety, and eventually to severe hyperactivity when you return. However, once the wolf or wolf-dog has said hello, they will growl and potentially snap at you if you insist on long sessions of petting. Wolves and wolf-dogs are not lap dogs. A cage with corners will give a spot for one wolf to aggressively corner another wolf. Also wolves will try to climb and jump in corners. The wolf is a climber and can climb a chain-linked fence. You will need to have an enclosed top or a overhanging climb barrier that is a chain-linked section that is about 3 feet wide and is set at an inward and upward angle of 40 degree. They will try to dig out so you will need to lay wire horizontally about 1 foot underground and 3 feet out to prevent them from escaping. Housing a wolf Housing outdoors in the winter. Species of wolves which are naturally found in cold climate will do fine in a cold climate area but will need access to a dry sheltered area that will protect them from rain, wind, sun and extreme cold. A shelter area should be provided for each wolf. Straw should be spread on the floor of the shelter to provide a dry bedding that can be easily cleaned. You can use a heated water bowl to provide clean drinking water at all times. Warmer climate species will need supplemental heat when the temperatures go below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The can be accomplished by installing a space heater, heat pads, or heat lamps. Make sure the heat source is secure and the wolf cannot knock it over or lay too close to it and get burnt. Warm climate species of wolves will whelp, give birth, during the winter. If you are expecting pups, you need to keep the shelter area at 50 degree Fahrenheit or above for the pups. Housing outdoors in the summer. Wolves do well in the summer heat if shade is provided for each wolf. You can also provide a shallow pond or pool for them to cool down in when needed. Make sure the water level is safe for small pups if any are present. They will also need to have access to clean cool drinking water at all times. Wolves in captivity can be fed a high quality dry dog food diet. Raw meat, bones and whole or partial carcasses can be feed periodically. Clean water needs to be provided at all times for drinking. Allow Your Puppy To Sleep After all the excitement, stress, massive change and huge amount of mental stimulation your puppy has just been through, they will likely need to sleep soon after arriving at your home. So as soon as they either start to look tired, or the introductions to their new living space and family have ended whichever comes first put them to bed for a short while. On the other hand they might feel completely overwhelmed, retreat into themselves and show reluctance to explore. They might slink into a corner silently and sit there watching their new world with wonder but apprehension, before falling asleep for hours. And when it comes to the first night they might sleep right through, or they might cry and whine the whole night. As your puppy begins to get used to everything, their character will start to shine through and you will begin to see their true personalities. Exactly what this will be is different for every puppy…it will be fun for you to find out! And by being the provider of everything they need in life, giving them all that is good, it will only take 2 or 3 days for your puppy to learn to love you and get excited and happy to see you when you turn up. So your task is to set up and stick to these schedules, begin training your puppy and help them to learn how you want them to behave and when they can expect the things they need in life. What should you feed your puppy You should feed your puppy the same food they had at the breeders because an abrupt change in diet almost always leads to stomach upset. Rewarding silence and ignoring noise is the only way they will eventually learn to be quiet at night themselves. Any time you cannot closely supervise them, you have to confine them, either in their crate, an exercise pen or a puppy proofed room secured with a barrier across the doorway. The point of confining them as a puppy is so they can enjoy all the freedom in the world once they are an adult. By confining them with treat dispensing chew toys they get rewarded for chewing the right things and develop a chew toy obsession. Confine them now, they form a good chew toy obsession and have no chance of developing bad chewing habits. Then once they are over their adolescent chewing stage you slowly open up the house to them and eventually they can have free roam and be completely trusted. A little sacrifice when young for a better life later. And a second hugely important reason for confining your puppy when you cannot supervise them is for speedier house training. In fact if you read my comments from earlier, you will see you start the very first moment you finish the journey home. In essence, house training is about creating good habits while avoiding bad ones and for the speediest success you want to start immediately. Wherever your puppy is able to potty has the chance of becoming their favored toilet spot for many weeks or months to come. So you want to prevent them pottying inside, and encourage them to potty outside. The main ingredients of a successful house training program are preventing mistakes and praising heavily for doing the right thing. Achieving this is all about schedules, supervision and confinement. Now, your puppy will need to potty anywhere from every 15 to 45 minutes. So to start with, take them outside every 30 minutes and adjust this schedule to suit their natural rhythm. Therefore, you want to start crate training very early on, after just a few days of getting puppy home, and I personally aim for 9 weeks old to start. I prefer to wait a week or so to avoid them pottying in the crate as much as possible, doing the most I can to preserve their instinct not to soil where they sleep, the instinct that helps most when using a crate for house training.
