Pedigree is important when it comes to determining what your Boxer puppy will look like, its temperament, and the chance of it developing genetic issues in the future as it grows up. Champion heritage drives the price of the Boxer puppy up because the buyer is almost guaranteed to get a perfect specimen of what a Boxer should be and has a better chance at winning competitions with their Boxer puppy when it grows up. The breed, unfortunately, suffers from hip dysplasia, cardiovascular myopathy, severe arthritis, degenerative myelopathy, several cancers, and aortic valve disease. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As we all know too well, what we put in our belly has a huge impact on our health, vitality, length and quality of life. They have to strike a fine balance between getting enough nutrients to grow and avoiding an over-abundance that can lead to abnormal growth and disabling conditions. In this article you will learn precisely how to feed your puppy. What they can eat, what they should not, how many times you should feed them each day, basic information on home-made diets and the pros and cons of various commercial dog foods. The majority of Labrador owners feed their puppy kibble. Kibble is ground meal, shaped into dried biscuit-like pellets that are extremely convenient to buy, store and feed, providing everything a puppy needs in one easy to handle product. All the major brands carry a range of kibble and many are specifically formulated to suit the precise needs of puppies. For our recommendations of the best puppy food for labs, please read our article on: The Best Food for Labrador Puppies. Good breeders will supply you with all the information you need to feed your new puppy and you should follow this advice. Puppies almost always get upset tummies during a change of diet. The stress of moving to a new home is enough to deal with without them potentially having tummy upset on top. So try to avoid this. But expect your puppy to get diarrhea after such a sudden change. What Can Puppies Eat? With a bewildering choice of different puppy foods available, what to feed your puppy may not be the easiest decision to make. You Can Feed Your Puppy Kibble Kibble is ground up food, formed into pellets and dried for easy storage and convenience. It is a specially formulated, complete and balanced diet, containing everything a puppy needs to grow and be healthy. Many people believe kibble is the best way to feed a puppy, with it being so easy to buy, store and feed while containing every nutrient a puppy needs in the right proportions. Wet, Complete Puppy Foods Are An Option As the name suggests, complete wet dog food is complete and balanced, meaning nothing should be fed in combination. Everything needed is included in this one food. Complete wet foods come in individual pouches or tins with one pouch or tin containing one single serving. In the main these foods are low in nutrition, contain a high amount of cheap fillers, by-products and water and need mixing with a biscuit to give them some substance and to make them more complete. Because the food is such low quality, you have to feed a lot of it. And what goes in, must come out. This type of feeding was popular decades ago and I do remember my parents feeding our first dogs this way, but most people have moved on from this and are feeding their dogs in better ways now. Raw Food, BARF And Home-Made Diets Raw feeding is a diet that consists of mostly raw meat, edible bones and animal organs, though most practitioners also mix in small portions of fruit, veg and selected other foodstuffs. There are many people feel strongly that this is the best possible way to feed a dog. But I would caution most people that to feed this diet successfully, you need to do A LOT of research, gain a lot of knowledge and truly understand a dogs nutritional needs to make sure they get exactly what they need in the right amounts. Many people wonder if they can feed their puppy human foods, anything found in the fridge or larder. Furthermore, there are many human foods that are toxic to dogs that you should avoid at all costs. Too much of some nutrients can be bad in itself, but also prevent the absorption and use of other nutrients too. So supplementing a balanced diet is a bad thing to do. Can You Give Puppies Milk? Assuming you get your puppy at the recommended 8 weeks, they will have been fully weaned before you bring them home. Many puppies are intolerant of cows milk and drinking it leads to an upset tummy and diarrhea so you would do best to avoid giving your puppy any milk at all. One exception is for very young puppies under 6 weeks of age. When we have newborn puppies at our house we sometimes need to supplement and use Esbilac Milk Supplemen t. However, if you have a very young puppy that you think may need supplementing please first consult with your veterinarian. Are They Necessary? You will likely be feeding your puppy a commercially available complete and balanced dog food, in which case you certainly should not supplement their food. Supplementing this will mean too much of one or more things, making it unbalanced which can actually lead to harm. But an excess amount of calcium in the diet of a Lab puppy can lead to skeletal development problems. So adding a calcium supplement to an already complete diet can actually do more harm than good. There may also be times your vet advises you to do so. But if feeding raw, you should know more about nutrition than I do. This is a hard question to answer and sadly I cannot give you a definite quantity or weight to feed them each day. Puppies grow at different rates, some are more active than others and there can be large differences between metabolisms too. However… The biggest determining factor is how concentrated the nutrients and calories are in the brand of food you feed them. High quality foods are nutrient rich and give a puppy all they need from quite small amounts of food. But cheaper brands are full of low quality and nutritionally empty fillers that mean a puppy needs considerably more to get what they need. Start by feeding your puppy according to the guidelines on the label of the puppy food you buy for them. Then see how their body develops. Puppies should not be fat! But at the other end of the scale if they start to look and feel a little slim, up their portion sizes a little. The guidelines on the food you buy are just that…guidelines. You might also be interested in:. They are outgoing, active and affectionate companions who have a lot of energy and love making their owner happy. They have strong retrieving instincts as they were bred to be gun dogs, so they love both soft toys and diving into bodies of water. It is highly unusual for the puppy's owner to care for them during this time and is best left to a responsible, reputable breeder. Your puppy's body will double in weight as their muscles, organs and bones develop. Nutrition During the neonatal stage, your Labrador puppy will get most of their nutrition from their mother's milk. At around 4 weeks you may wish to introduce a mush of minced protein such as beef, but always consult your vet first before changing your puppy's diet at this stage. Health During this time it is important to monitor your Lab for any infections, diseases or birth defects. Puppies are unable to urinate or defecate by themselves initially, so their mother helps them but may additionally require your assistance. Keep your vet's contact details close by and educate yourself thoroughly on this stage of puppy development. By the end of this period, your puppy will be mobile and will explore the world mouth first — be sure to keep choking hazards and toxic foods out of their reach. Behaviour During most of this time your Labrador puppy will be asleep or inactive, but they will soon be playing with their brothers and sisters. After weeks they will go through as much sensory development as a human baby does in a few months. It is important to avoid disturbing the puppies' mother as she will be likely be protective, but some interaction with the young pups is normal so they become used to human touch. This is a formative time for your puppy and will be when they learn to walk, play, bite, hold their bladder, and interact with others. You will soon notice their attentiveness to you and their intense love of play — many Labs keep this caring and fun attitude for their whole lives if you foster it. Nutrition During the weaning stage, you should slowly introduce into their diet a nutritionally complete dog food which is appropriate to your Labrador's large size and young age. Labs are notoriously greedy and will quickly gobble down food and snatch treats from hands. You should familiarise yourself with lists of toxic foods and plants to avoid and hide as your puppy will soon find ways to get into forbidden snacks found only in bins. Labradors puppies instinctively like to 'dig' inside their water bowls so much of their water will end up on the ground. Make sure to get your puppy used to touching inside their small ears as they are prone to ear infections and will need regular checkups. Behaviour Due to the changes in their environment, your Labrador puppy will likely be under a significant amount of stress. It's important that you provide lots of attention and positive reinforcement for good behaviour at this time to establish boundaries early. Labradors are eager to love anyone but can be overbearing, so you should introduce them to a number of different people and environments so that they are not overwhelmed with excitement later in life. PUPPY By the time your Labrador Retriever reaches puppyhood their personality will be well developed and you will have established a loving, social friend who wants to maximise time with you and others. Your Labrador puppy will do well socially and behaviourally from puppy training classes as long as treats are involved. Nutrition Your Labrador puppy's diet should be based around a high quality, nutritionally complete puppy food. You may also wish to introduce them to fresh, lean raw meat — however, don't feed your puppy any meat you would not feed to a fellow human being. Bloat is potentially fatal but can be combatted by feeding your dog two smaller meals per day, a habit you should start while they are a puppy. A rough guide is that they should exercise for minutes per day and less after 5 years when many lose their appetite for long marathons of activity. Your pup will need brushing every few days, with more frequent grooming during seasonal changes to combat shedding. Bathing should be infrequent as this can damage the waterproofing of their coats, however, you should wash them after swimming or rolling in muck. After around 8 weeks your puppy will be due for some vaccinations, so they will need a checkup at the vet and to arrange for boosters after that. Studies showed that dogs supplemented with a diet of bovine colostrum had a quicker and stronger immune system response to CDV vaccine as compared to dogs fed a control diet. Colostrum supplemented dogs maintained a higher antibody level even after 40 weeks A diet supplemented with Colostrum helps bridge the immunity gap in puppies that occurs between 3 weeks and 5 months of age. Behaviour Do not be complacent with training your Labrador puppy — almost all are very gentle and well behaved, but this does not mean that training is unnecessary. Labs are very loving and patient with all that they meet, but they often do not know their own size. To combat this, they should be trained in how to act around small dogs and children to avoid intimidation or accidental injury. They will also benefit from obedience training to drop things from their mouths, avoid rushing across busy streets and make sure they come when called. Recommended Articles. The source of protein matters when considering a high-quality diet. FATS The rest of the diet should be made up of fats, carbs, and vitamins. Labs need to have a correct protein -to-fat ratio, where protein takes the lead. Dogs tend to convert fat into glucose, so this is an important source of energy. Dogs rely mostly on protein and fats, but carbs are necessary. That said, a low carb diet is best for puppies. However, you still need the right percentage of carbs, since this gives your dog the sensation of being full. These include starches, fibers, and sugars. Try to opt for more complex carbs like starchy grain and veggies because these are easier to digest. Your Lab puppy will thrive when his or her diet includes: Vitamin B12 especially during puppy development , Vitamins A and E, C, Vitamin D, phosphorus, and calcium, Potassium Each of these required vitamins and minerals contributes to a healthy, happy, and energetic puppy. They also help offset issues like obesity. Vitamins A and E are important because they help your dog burn calories and promote eye and skin health. Vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus, on the other hand, are part of a trifecta that works to strengthen teeth and bones. Potassium is a heart health-preserver. Labs with poor genetics are especially prone to orthopedic issues. Osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia are common health problems for this breed. Glucosamine, an amino-sugar, together with chondroitin sulfate, helps replace and support naturally degrading cartilage during old age. Recently,"grain-free" foods are being championed as a preferred and even high-quality form of dog food. That's, not the whole story. An investigation launched by the FDA revealed that there are potential links between a form of canine heart disease and grain-free foods. So far, researchers have provided an update to this researchers have provided an update to this research staring that the issue may not just be grain-free diets. Grain-free may be part of other trends knows as "BEG"- boutique companies. Puppy diets don't' need to be complicated. They also don't need to include ingredients that humans might enjoy. Enjoyment doesn't necessarily bring any nutritional value to your puppy's development. Keep it simple, using the guidelines for fats, proteins, and carbs above and don't shy away from food with grains in them. It's not their presence that's a problem it's often the ratio. There shouldn't be more carbs or grains than protein. Nor does including only legumes, seeds, lentils, or chickpeas as the primary ingredients make the food more superior. It's perfectly healthy to include complex carb sources like starchy rice and other grains. Grain-free isn't and shouldn't be a qualifying factor for your choice in puppy food. Feeding Your Puppy Kibble Kibble is dried, pelleted food that stores well is easy to eat, and is pre-formulated with everything your puppy needs to thrive and grow in his early developmental months. There are plenty of popular brands that don't measure up to the Snowy Pines standard. That's why it's so vital for you to learn how to read puppy food labels. Puppies should stick with "puppy stage" food, while adults should stick to bags marked "adults. Instead, your dog should have regular bowel movements, allowing them to absorb all the nutrients available. You should also keep in mind that caloric intake is calculated a little differently for puppies. Kibble diets are measured by how many calories the proteins, fats, and carbs represent for each gram. For puppies, this should be 3. Sticking to these ratios will help ensure your kibble choice is a healthy one. It's also important to note that kibble calories are often higher when compared to wet food. If it's high-quality wet food, it won't have as much fat to preserve it, which means fewer calories. You may have to supplement with dry food, especially if you're trying to keep the calories of carbs, proteins, and fats in the right per-gram ratio. Faster nutrient absorption Weight management A BARF diet ensures dogs eat fresh, wholesome, and allergen-free foods, as no chemicals, additives, or fillers are used in raw diets. Raw Dog Diet Research Increased lifespan. Generally, raw-fed dogs are so much healthier. The changes are profound. A study on feeding practices in the United States and Australia indicated that .Lisa M. Freeman Freeman, a nutrition professor at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, tells WebMD many benefits attributed to a raw food diet for dogs, such as a shinier coat, are the result of the high-fat composition of the typical raw diet. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies. Although I am not a veterinarian myself, I have been a lab owner for 11 years and been in the pet food industry for the last 6 years. However, if this is not the case for your pupper, no need to worry. Be sure not to feed normal cerelac or cow milk as that will result in loose motion as well as stunted growth. At this tender age, you need to feed your lab pup via feeding bottle like you would feed a human baby of age 2 months. Milk is the only food apart from purified water which your dog is gonna need till 1. After this age, till 3 months you have two options. You can either continue with milk or look at starter food options like Royal Canin Maxi starter , Drools starter, Farmina Puppy Starter, Canine Creek Starter , Orijen puppy and plenty of other brands which are available in the market. The kibble for starter food is small and most probably, your puppy will be able to chew it. Certain dry food can be extremely hard to chew, so depending on the toughness of the kibble you might have to break i. Puppies of age 1. You should be following this diet of starter food till 3 months age at least. Also, make sure you are vaccinating as well as deworming your pup at the right intervals. So, a proper nutritious diet is essential to achieve good growth. You can either go for Royal Canin Maxi Junior or Royal Canin Labrador Junior or puppy variants of other brands like drools, canine creek, Orijen Puppy and Junior Recommended , Acana large breed puppy, pedigree not recommended at this age. If you are giving a good diet like Royal Canin, farmina or even home-made food, growth should be good. For those who can extend their budget, you can go for something even more premium like Acana, Orijen, Arden Grange and the likes. No need to add additional supplements. If you are feeding home-made food like boiled chicken which itself is a very good food option, consider adding some fish oils like Beaphar Salmon Oil. However, a good diet is recommended to ensure a good life span above 12 years and muscle development. Homemade food can be a healthy option as well. Feeding guide amount to feed in grams depends on dog weight and varies from brand to brand. You will find the recommended portion for your brand based on the calories it carries on the packet you will buy. At other times, you can give chews or treats but whole meal should be fed not more than twice a day. Do not keep food available in front of the dog except during his eating time. However, you can keep water available in a bowl all the time. Sticking to schedule regularly is recommended. Wait, till now we have been speaking about commercial dry food. Yes, this happens to many dogs. While some dogs like pugs are voracious eaters, labs or goldens can be extremely choosy. They will eat whatever liquid you put in the feeding bottle at this age. However, once puppies mature and learn to eat themselves, they may not like dry food, rarely touch it. In these cases, the best option is to first add a home-made additive with the dry food. You may add many things dog like in small quantities of chicken stalk, chicken pieces boneless for puppies , curd, egg and others to the dry food. Changing or trying out another brand helps as well. I have seen many dogs who hate Drools but like Canine Creek although they are manufactured by same company. Every dog has a mind of his own. Most common diseases of Indian bred dogs like canine hyp dysplasia, ear infections, bent hind legs can happen to any dog. Take your dog to a registered veterinary practitioner in case such situations arise. Lack of appetite is also observed during this age at times. In case, your dog has gastrointestinal disorders, referring to a prescription diet under the guidance of a veterinarian can be immensely helpful. This entry was posted in Pet Blog. This specialised care is usually left to trained breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a Labrador puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. You can do this by mixing some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, you can reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. Read on to learn how much you should feed a Labrador puppy as they get older. In their four months living with you, and once they are weaned off milk, Labradors are likely to reach almost half their adult weight. They will reach their full adult weight by the time they are 6 to 7 months old. With this rapid growth can come some risks. Labradors can be susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia and joint abnormalities that can start in puppyhood. Once your Lab puppy hits 6 months, their growth begins to slow down. Once puppyhood is over, you can move to feeding your lab twice a day instead of 3 or 4 times. Labs are still very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. The transition from puppy food to adult food should happen at around 15 months. This is because, being a breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your Labrador puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. It is also dangerous for a puppy to overeat. Labradors are large breeds, which means they need plenty of nutrients and calories as they grow to ensure they go from being active puppies to healthy adult dogs. Labrador puppies need to eat food that is high in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are also essential for supporting your active pup. Aside from nutritionally complete dry puppy food, Labrador puppies can benefit from the extra protein that raw meat can provide them with, such as lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. The amount of food you give your Labrador is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult Labradors, around 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female Labradors, who tend to be around 5 to 10 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, to 1, calories per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your Labrador based on how calorically dense their food is. Adult Labradors should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs may benefit from exercise after eating: especially high energy Labs with a lot of energy to burn off. You should also try to give your Labrador a high quality food that is specially designed for large breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. For example, Labradors can be particularly susceptible to obesity. As a breed, they tend to be one of the most commonly obese dogs in Australia. This is due to several factors, including a genetic predisposition to unhealthy weight gain and a famously large appetite. However, plenty of Labs suffering from obesity are simply overfed and not getting enough exercise. Choosing a low carb diet is crucial to preventing obesity in your Labrador. If you are unsure about what you should feed your Labrador, you should always consult your vet. They will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from any chronic health issues, and they will be able to create a nutritional plan to help keep your dog healthy and happy for many years to come. Wet food for Labradors is often high in protein and fat, and is better at keeping your dog hydrated than other food sources. Chewing on dry food can be especially good for teething Labrador puppies. A raw diet can be a good option for your Labrador as you have more control over the kinds of food and amount of nutrients your pup is consuming. For this reason, raw diets require a lot more work on your part as an owner. Whatever you decide to feed your Labrador, all dogs need a similar ratio of nutrients in their diets. Different dog breeds will need different kinds of nutrient support as they go through the various stages of their life. It can also be easy to overestimate the amount of food your Labrador needs to stay fit and healthy — especially if they are skilled at begging! You need to make sure that your dog is eating the right amount of food for their breed, their size, and activity level. You should also avoid foods that, while delicious for humans, can be harmful or toxic for dogs. Foods like onions, nuts, alcohol, cooked bones, and artificial sweeteners are commonly included in dinners meant for humans, but can cause serious health issues for your Labrador. No matter how old your Lab is, it is important to keep to a consistent feeding schedule. A feeding schedule can help you keep track of any changes in behaviour around food that might signal illness or physiological stress. You are planning to adopt a Labrador puppy, or already are a proud pet parent of one, you must be anxious about how best to assure optimum growth and health to your pup. This piece of writing is an attempt to give you some useful information about the kind of food which you can feed and also about how best you can feed it. In earlier times, the breed was mostly utilized and appreciated for being a versatile hunter. It can hunt on land as well as water; besides, this intelligent dog is a possessor of a gentle temperament, which makes it easily fit into the role of a friendly family dog. Types of Dog food Broadly speaking, the food for your pet is available in three forms — Wet, Dry and Raw. Wet food is the commercially manufactured food which offers chunks of meat, with or without gravy, with added vitamins, minerals and other important elements to make it nutritionally complete and balanced. Dry food consists of pellets called kibbles of food, which are easy to store and convenient to serve. The ready-made food bits meant for puppies consist of nutrients in the right proportions to support a healthy growth. Raw diet consists of raw meat, bones, fruits and vegetables. There are benefits and risks involved in administering a raw diet, which one should be aware of before adopting a fully raw diet. You may go for dry, wet or raw diet, or a combination of them. You may also consult your vet to guide in case you are confused about your choices. Labradors are always hungry and that is because of their huge appetites. As a pet owner you need to monitor the amount of food they eat, as their greed for food can easily drive them towards obesity, and consequently towards various diseases. Commercially made food Many companies categorize their foods on the basis of life stage puppy, adult, senior , breed large, medium or small , or may offer pet food specifically targeting a particular breed like Royal Canin Labrador Junior , which seeks to take care of a Labrador dog up to 15 months of age. The formulation of diets like this are based on the assumption that all pure breed dogs have their unique needs, which if addressed would bring the dog to an optimum level of health. Information from the breeders If you have brought the puppy from a breeder, then he would supply you a diet routine which needs to be followed, some food or may be some information regarding feeding. Follow it religiously for some days to give some sort of familiar touch to the puppy that is undergoing the stress of being separated from its mother and siblings. In absence of any information from the breeder, best thing would be to consult a vet. Milk for the puppy? Beware of confusing food labels Learn how to read a food label. The food label is given in decreasing order, making the first ingredient the biggest element in the food. That is why it is very important to know what the first two or three ingredients of the food are. Ideally, the first element of any dog food should be a specific kind of meat like chicken, duck, beef ; meat-by-product, meat or animal should not be mentioned on the package as they present an ambiguous picture. Leftover of slaughter houses can find its way to your dog food, something which cannot be classed in the category of healthy and complete food. So if you care for your dog, be aware and make the right selection. Water Make sure that water is available to the puppies at all times of the day, except for one hour before sleeping time. Divide the daily diet The daily dietary requirement of your Labrador pup should be properly divided into portions of meal to be fed at regular intervals. This would help in managing digestion and for keeping its overall health at a good level. You can begin by feeding four meals a day to your 8 to 12 weeks old puppy, and have a time marked for each. Have a gap of at least 3 hours in between each meal so that the little doggie is able to digest it well. Two meals a day is also something which most dog owners continue to feed even after the dog grows up. Feeding your dog once a day after 12 months of age can work as long as you feed it raw meat. The dry kibbles tend to swell once the dog drinks water, and this may cause bloating and also damage its stomach, hence is strictly not recommended. Teach the dog to eat at meal times Your dog would learn to eat the food when it is offered to it if you take back the bowl after a specific interval of time, say 15 to 20 minutes. Household scraps Avoid giving leftovers from your own meals to your puppy, unless you have enough knowledge and experience in dealing with the nutritional requirements of a growing canine. The nutritional needs of your puppy are different than that of humans; also it may differ from one breed of dog to another. The growing pup needs complete and balanced diet to achieve its potential growth, otherwise lifelong disabilities or problems can find easy entry into its life. As, your heartfelt, but nutritionally lacking edible additions might unbalance the diet of your dog. How much to feed? How much food to feed your dog each day is something no one can precisely tell. But the guidelines on the package of the food you are feeding, along with your observation of how the dog is doing with the quantity fed, would help you decide an adequate quantity. The important thing to remember is that the dog should neither be too fat or too slim. Following some instructions related to diet, regular appointments with vet, observing the puppy and showering it with lots and lots of love would give such environment to the little canine in which it would thrive. Where does the Golden Retriever Chow Mix come from? As with any other designer dog, the origin of the Golden Retriever Chow mix is unknown. At some point in the past 20 years, people decided to mix the Golden Retriever and Chow Chow, which resulted in the Golden Chowtriever — a fierce but loving crossbreed. To fully understand this crossbreed, we can learn more about the traits it can inherit from its parents. They were exceptionally good at retrieving waterfowl without damaging the game, thanks to their soft mouths, which made them the top choice for many hunters. Fast forward to today, Goldens have taken the world by storm. Their outgoing, playful nature, helped make them the third most popular breed in the US, and the rest of the world. Yet, this dog offers brains as well as brawns. They even rank as the fourth most intelligent dog breed in the world — right behind the Border Collie, Poodle, and German Shepherd. This purebred can be found in three different types: American , Canadian , and English Golden Retrievers. Meet the Chow Chow The Chow Chow originates from northern China and is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, dating back to years ago. This fluffy breed was produced as companions for Chinese nobles, and some dynasties had over Chow Chows at any given time. When it comes to its physical appearance, everything you need to know is in its name. The average height of an adult specimen is 17 to 20 inches 43 to 51 cm and weighs 40 to 90 pounds kg. Chows have a very dense double coat with a thick mane around the neck area. Its silky smooth fur comes in a variety of shades — from red to black — but multiple colors are considered outside the breed standard. They have a somewhat longer lifespan — 11 to 13 years. But there are organizations for designer dogs that recognize this hybrid, like the Dog Registry of America, Inc. What does a Golden Chowtriever look like? There is no standardized appearance for any mixed breed, but generally, the Golden Retriever Chow mix will charm you with its dark eyes and dropped ears. Then at the end of their body is a slightly curved yet puffy tail. Since crossbreeds are full of surprises, this fido can have the unique tongue color of the Chow. It can be the same black and blue pattern, or it can still be pink with dark spots. Watch this video of a Golden Retriever Chow mix named Bizkit enjoying beach day! If you look closely, you can even see some dark spots on its tongue: How big does a Golden Retriever Chow mix get? They can reach up to 25 inches .These canines are more suitable for a home that can offer ample space, both indoors and outdoors. Golden Retriever Chow mixes are considered heavy shedders throughout the year. One standardized thing is the color of its coat. The Golden Chow mix can be found in solid colors such as golden, black, brown, red, and blue. Are Golden Retriever Chow mix dogs aggressive? Neither parents are known to be aggressive, but there is quite a significant disparity between their two temperaments. Golden Retrievers are lovable goofballs who live to please their masters, while Chows are more independent and can be stubborn. A typical Chowtriever is loving, playful, and friendly. They love being around their family, but can be suspicious of strangers. With proper socialization, it will show its good side. We can expect them to be overprotective because of their history being bred as guard dogs. This hybrid may be good with kids but always supervise playtime. If they feel threatened or mishandled, the Chow Golden mix can nip in retaliation. If you have a family with little ones, think twice before bringing in this hybrid. They may be more suitable for families with older children. Avoid this by making sure your pet gets proper obedience training, and then slowly introduce and socialize your Golden Retriever Chow mix in a controlled environment. Taking care of a Golden Retriever Chow mix This designer dog requires at least 60 minutes of exercise daily. Give your Golden Chowtriever 3 cups of dog food divided into three meals throughout the day. Dry kibbles are not only a convenient option, but it also has more nutritional balance. You can also feed your furbaby some vegetables and fruits. How to groom a Golden Retriever Chow mix? As we mentioned earlier, this crossbreed is a notorious shedder and will require daily brushing. Other than that, grooming sessions can be done every month or two. Expect more hair and be prepared with a bristle brush, greyhound comb, and a rake for shedding season, though. Tartar accumulation with this pooch can lead to gum inflammation and infection. Health: How long does a Golden Retriever Chow mix live? One of the common reasons behind crossbreeding is to create a healthier dog than its purebred parents, also known as hybrid vigor. And though the Chow Chow Golden Retriever mix is considered a hardy breed with a lifespan of 10 to 14 years, it can still suffer from genetic illnesses, like hip dysplasia. Most vets recommend glucosamine supplements for dogs who are susceptible to having joint problems to reduce stiffness and swelling on their joints. And because of its thick coat, this doggo may have allergies caused by fleas. The golden rule no pun intended when getting a dog is to ask to see the parents and their medical documents. Of course, the price may vary depending on the availability of the puppies, parent quality, breeder location, etc. Goldies can have 4 to 12 puppies, and Chows can have 4 to 6 pups. So, we can safely say that this crossbreed will likely have a litter size within that range. Another option is adoption. Here are Chow Chow mixes and Golden Retriever hybrids that you might like. The Chusky comes from a line of very active, working parent breeds. They need to be walked at least three times a day, in addition to their playtime with other dogs. Due to their activity requirements, this breed is not suited to live in an apartment. In those cases, the only way to keep it tangle-free is by brushing its hair three times a week. Unlike the Goldie, this hybrid makes for a good guard dog. If a stranger is approaching, it will be sure to notify you either by barking or howling. With very active parents, this canine will need lots of exercise — around an hour, topped off by 2 to 3 hour-long walks. The verdict: Should you get a Golden Retriever Chow mix? Golden Retriever Chow mixes can be excellent dogs, but they need experienced dog owners who can deal with their stubbornness and wary nature. If you can provide the kind of home and time that this fido requires, this might be the dog for you. Do you think you have what it takes to take care of a Golden Retriever Chow Mix? In fact, you can often find puppies in your local area for much less than they cost when you shop online. Of course, it is a good idea to find out as much as you can about the breed before you decide to buy a puppy. This way, you will know what kind of temperament you are going to be getting and whether the dog is a good fit for your family. This is not always an easy task, but this great breed can be a wonderful addition to any family. You should take your time in looking at the breed and then making your decision. There are many different breeds, so it is best to make sure you have a list of criteria that you are going to look for. If you are not sure where to start, you may want to consider taking a class on dogs or contacting a breeder who has had a lot of experience with Golden Retrievers. The Internet is a great place to get tips on finding the right breed. You may find that some breeds sell much cheaper on the Internet than they do at your local pet store. There are many breeders and even some individual dogs that sell puppies for sale. If you are interested in one specific breed, be sure to contact the breeder and ask them about the price that you can expect to pay for a puppy. You also need to think about the type of new home that you will be moving into. Some golden retriever breeds are more suited to being in the home of a very active, outdoor dog. Others are better suited to indoor life. Take your time when buying a puppy, and see which breed would be a better fit in your household. It is also a good idea to think about how much time you will be able to spend with the puppy while you are taking care of your new pet. If you will be traveling a lot, it may be a good idea to look for puppies for sale that have been trained to be boarded. In this case, a waiting period before you bring the dog home could be a good idea. Dogs can have varying degrees of tolerance for noise. Besides, some dogs are better at playing with small children and other pets. If you are not the type of person who enjoys this type of thing, be sure to look for puppies for sale that do not have a lot of young children in their household. You may also want to consider a dog that is best suited to a small apartment, as well as where you will be renting the place. Some dogs need a large amount of room, especially if they are smaller breeds. Before you buy a puppy, make sure that you have taken all of these things into consideration. When you are looking for puppies for sale, you should do your research and look for the right breed for you. Some breeds are better suited to certain lifestyles, so take your time and decide what you want. Whether you are just starting to be a pet owner or are planning to raise a family of dogs, you should never settle for anything less than the perfect pet. Usually, there are 1 to three discount coupons for one item. But in every single order, clients can only use one discount coupon. So, always try to choose the most appropriate coupon with the biggest discount. However, the best way to find out which Golden Retriever Chow mix is best is to find the best breeder offering the puppies. But finding reputable breeders of chows may sometimes prove to be tedious and time-consuming. It is because these breeders are very careful about the health of their puppies and do not resort to selling them to irresponsible people who may not take good care of them. Also, breeders like to sell their chows at cheap prices to reduce the expenses they have to incur to maintain them. However, there are still several trusted breeders in the market who can provide good quality Golden Retriever puppies at reasonable prices. When looking for Golden Retriever puppies for sale in Michigan, it is better to ask around first before making any purchase. People living nearby can give you an idea about the prices of the different kinds of breeds. You can visit the local dog shows as well. Here, you can see the dogs in action and know what kind of price range they generally belong to. Knowing about the prices of different breeds will also help you decide if any of the mentioned breeds are suitable for you. If you are a first-time buyer, you may want to inquire about the requirements that the breeder wants for his puppies. Breeders normally require only those dogs that show good working qualities and possess good health. Besides, you have to check out whether the breeder has a license to operate a business dealing with breeding dogs. It is illegal to own a business that offers dogs for sale if it does not have a license to operate. Golden Retriever breeders that sell Golden Retriever puppies for sale can be found in almost every city in the U. These breeders usually have many dogs for sale and a lot of knowledge about how to take care of them. Usually, these breeders have a good relationship with other reputable breeders and can easily get their help in terms of finding the right dogs and puppies. There are several popular national brands available in the market, including the Boston Terriers, the Collie, the Irish Wolfhound, the Standard Schnauzer, and the Shih Tzu. It should be noted that these registered dogs have undergone all the necessary testing and evaluations to ensure their health and temperament. Purebred Golden Retrievers and any other dog or puppy that belongs to the same breed group have very close physical resemblance but are still distinct from each other genetically. Another reason is that they believe that the American Kennel Club has not done enough testing to verify the health and temperament of hybrid dogs. And even though there is little proof to suggest that hybrid chows do suffer from serious health problems, they cannot be assumed to be safe. Many pet stores also offer Chow mix puppies for sale. Though this type of hybrid is also referred to as American Bandog or Cocker Spaniel mix, it is actually unrelated to either breed in terms of the bloodline. Instead, it is an American breed of dog that was crossed with a Standard Poodle to create the designer dog. In most cases, these dogs have pedigrees that trace their origins back to the same American breed standard. This makes them eligible for all types of licenses as purebred American Kennel Club registered dogs. Share this:. However, have you ever considered a Golden Chow? This might just be one of the best choices from all the puppies and dogs available for you. These protective but gentle dogs are fantastic companions, but they are not the dog for everyone. In this article, we will take a look at this remarkable mixed-breed dog. What Is a Golden Chow? It is an attempt to take the best of two wonderful dogs. The history of the Chow Chow Golden Retriever mix is not well known. They have only emerged in the last 20 years as part of a growing trend to cross breed different purebred dogs. Some of these cross-breeds have been successful. The Labradoodle is a classic example. The hybrid is now standardized, meaning that owners know what they are getting when they buy one. The Golden Chow has not got that far. The appearance and temperament of the dog can vary depending on the parents. The first parent breed of this mix is the Chow Chow. The Chinese developed this dog more than 2, years ago as an all-around working animal. They served as farm animals, temple guards, and even army dogs! Many people are wary of the Chow Chow. It is known for being aggressive and standoffish. Some insurance companies will even increase your rates if they know that you have one of these as a pet. Without proper socializing, this dog can be mean and scary. Martha Stewart is also a fan and owns three. The other half of the equation is a lovable Golden Retriever. This breed is young compared to the Chow Chow. These dogs were developed in Scotland as hunting companions. Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular family dogs out there. This is because they are obedient, affectionate, and easy to train. They are known for being fluffy, aloof, and devoted pets. Golden Chows can be very similar to Golden Retrievers—or they could be very different. The answer depends largely on your individual dog and its genetics. As a hybrid, this dog tends to lean one way or the other. This is true for both appearance and temperament. Chow Chows usually weigh in at about 50 to 75 pounds and will stand 20 to 25 inches tall. They are considered medium-sized dogs, but they are at the larger end of the scale. Both the Golden and the Chow Chow are somewhat big dogs, so this cross is no small pup. Chow Chows can have a variety of appearances. Some will look like fluffier Golden Retrievers. Others might look like thinner Chow Chows. No matter what, you can expect a thick double coat that will need daily brushing. It will generally be more of a red or gold color, but this is not always the case. An interesting characteristic that you might find in your dog is its tongue. Chow Chows are known for their blue-black tongues, and it looks like this is a dominant trait. Your dog might have a splotchy multi-colored tongue. The mouth will also probably be darker as well. But lest that discourage you, check out this video of super adorable Golden Chow puppies. Temperament is where these dogs differ most from a Golden Retriever. This is because the two parent breeds are very different. Goldens love affection of all kinds, including from strangers. Chows are wary of people in general and are protective of their homes. If your dog leans more towards a Golden, it will be an attention-seeker. It will also be friendlier towards strangers. It will have many of the lovable traits that you look for in a Golden but might be more reserved and relaxed. A Golden Chow that leans more toward Chow traits, however, will not be as friendly. These dogs will be more protective of their homes and are suspicious of anyone who enters. If you are considering a Golden Chow, you should be prepared to change your lifestyle. These dogs will take up a lot of your time and energy when it comes to training and exercise. If they are more of a Golden Retriever, they will be easy to train. Goldens live to please people, and they are naturally obedient. They are focused to the point of obsession and will work hard to achieve any task that you give them. Goldens are also extremely active dogs. As hunting companions, they were bred to be outside and running around for long periods of time. Their favorite game in the world is fetch, especially if you throw a stick or ball into a lake or ocean. If your dog is more of a Chow Chow, training will be more difficult. You will need to establish yourself as the alpha dog right away. Chow Chows typically require more discipline than other dogs. This should never be physical though. You will likely find a unique training program that works for your dog. It is important to socialize Chow Chows and Golden Chows from an early age. The Chow side needs to learn that other animals and people do not pose a threat. The Golden Chow is only recommended to experienced dog owners. It also is not a dog for families with young children. Conclusion The Golden Chow is a difficult dog to raise. However, the reward is a sweet, loyal, and protective dog that will keep your family safe. Already Have a Golden Chow? Check out our feeding guide here. As with any mixed breed, they can take on the traits of one of the parent breeds or any combination of both of them. With a Golden Retriever Mix, the goal is to get the highly-trainable, super-friendly, and sweet nature of the Golden Retriever and the best traits of the other dog in the cross. Because there can be variation in the puppies, you will want to ask the breeder about the other dog in the cross. This will give you an idea of what other traits you could be dealing with in a Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A Golden Retriever is known as the quintessential friendly dog with a happy-go-lucky personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They also tend to be good with strangers as they are more interested in making friends. The other dog breed in the cross could provide some other traits and variations to this, but your Golden Retriever Mix puppy should have a similar disposition to the Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever Mixes tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in larger homes with room to run and can adapt well to apartment living. As long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection, they tend to be quite happy wherever they live. Golden Retrievers do well in most climates and are sensitive to heat, as with most dog breeds. Your Golden Retriever Mix should be about the same. A mixed breed can take on potential health concerns related to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Overall, a Golden Retriever Mix should be a relatively healthy dog breed. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing on genetic conditions to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Golden Retrievers are famously easy to train, which makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. Depending on the other parent breed, there may be a chance that your Golden Retriever Mix could have an independent or stubborn streak. In this case, you will want to be prepared for puppy training and obedience classes in case you want a little help in dealing with stubbornness. Classes are a great idea either way because they help strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize your puppy. Golden Retrievers tend to have a medium-length coat that sheds moderately year-round and requires brushing a few times a week. Bathing is usually on an as-needed basis. This may be the same for your Golden Retriever Mix or their coat could require more or less grooming depending on the other parent breed. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks and careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Golden Retrievers are high-energy dogs. Your Golden Retriever Mix will likely be the same. Even if the other parent breed is a low or moderate-energy dog, you will need to be prepared to deal with a high-energy dog. Daily walks, playtime, plus extra activity are a must for dogs with a lot of energy. Be prepared to try a lot of different activities to find your favorites. Teach your dog to play frisbee , go for a swim, go running together, try taking a few hikes, go on trips to the dog park, and more. A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog breed that stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Your Golden Retriever Mix could be the same or they could take after the other parent breed. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the other breed in the mix and meet the mother dog. This can give you a good idea of what size to expect as your Golden Retriever Mix puppy grows. Golden Retrievers generally live years. Unless the life span of the other parent breed varies largely from this range, you should be able to expect something similar from your Golden Retriever Mix. At first the employees at the shelter thought the hair loss was simply the result of abandonment or neglect. But the story evolved and it turned out they were quite the anomaly. This is the story of those two amazing dogs including an interview with Tyler Poe, the owner of Apollo, the hairless German Shepherd. Such was the case with Zander and Xavier, two adorable German Shepherds who were dropped off at a shelter back in early .Originally the North Carolina shelter thought the two puppies might have mange. It is an infection of the hair follicles that causes it not to grow. However, they can also be a sign that something more prominent is going on with their health. When Alopecia is caused genetically, there is no cure. But when it is caused by an underlying issue, certain treatments can help heal the hair loss. Certain medications are used such as antibiotics, anti-parasitics, and anti-fungals. In the case of Zander and Xavier, no cure was available and they are bald and hairless to this day. They have since been adopted. Xavier now goes by Apollo and was ironically adopted by a man with Alopecia named Tyler. Zander, now known as Mylo , was adopted by a couple named Aida and Tyler. He is an avid animal lover and dogs are no exception. He tells us the story of his first hairless German Shepherd and what life is like for the two of them. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your love for dogs. I grew up in a small mountain town in North Carolina, from a young age my family always had multiple dogs in the household. We always had an affinity for having all sorts of pets in my home, from turtles, to rabbits, to dogs. So, I grew up with a love for all animals, but dogs were always my particular pet of choice. I went to Appalachian State University, and due to my course load, I could never justify getting a dog of my own while I was in college. After college I moved to Charlotte and from there work only kept me busier. I finally made time in my schedule at the beginning of to really begin looking for a pet of my own. Tell us about your hairless German Shepherd. Apollo is a German Shepherd as they come. He is full of energy from the moment he opens his eyes in the morning until he plops down for bed at night. He LOVES tennis balls, going for runs, and especially his squirrel friends that inhabit his backyard. Other than being hairless, he is no different than any other dog, believe it or not. Tell us about the first time you saw Apollo and the impression he made on you. I had just been diagnosed with alopecia a few weeks before The Dodo released the first video of Apollo and his brother. I immediately knew that I had to at least apply for this puppy because our situations were so similar, and I knew I could provide the best life for him. How old is he now and how is he doing? He just turned 2 years old in October. He could not be thriving better than he is now! What does a daily routine look like for him? After that is breakfast, once breakfast is over, we normally walk miles, or run .Sometimes we change things up and will find an empty field to bust out the Chuck-It and throw tennis balls for a little while. As the day winds down, he gets his dinner. What are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a hairless German Shepherd? Number one advantage: no shedding, period. Other than having no fur to clean up, he really is like any other dog. Has your own experience with Alopecia helped you better take care of him? I would say that my condition has made me feel a stronger bond with him than I would have ever thought a human and a dog could share. I would definitely say that having alopecia probably made me a little more cognizant of keeping him safe from the elements, whether that be cold temperatures or the blazing sun. Do you have any cute or funny stories about Apollo you can share with us? Every day is a new adventure with him. I know everyone thinks their pet has the most personality and is the quirkiest thing in the world, but with him I truly feel that is the absolute truth. Just the other day, he was running zoomies in the house and for whatever reason, he chose to grab one of my socks out of my dirty clothes hamper and dropped it near his toy bin, just the one sock! About four hours later, Apollo was back to zooming around the house again and after about ten minutes I walked into the living room and found the exact same sock next to his toy bin again. He literally had to dig past other clothes to grab this one sock, but for whatever reason he decided that was the exact piece of clothing he wanted. You helped him find a new home. In what ways has he helped you in your life? He was one of the biggest saving graces in what is probably the most vulnerable time of my life. When I was diagnosed with alopecia and went from a full head of hair to being completely bald in less than two months, I had an identity crisis. People that had known me for years were passing me in hallways, unable to recognize me due to my drastic change in appearance. He helped me accept the new look that had been thrust upon me and helped me remember that it truly is the inside that matters. Apollo looks different than .He helped me to adopt the same attitude for life, to accept myself however I looked and to not be bogged down with what other people might think when they look at me. Is there any advice you can give to a potential hairless German Shepherd dog owner? Be prepared for weekly baths with special shampoo. In general, I would also just urge people thinking about getting a dog to really do their research on the breed. In Closing: We want to thank Tyler Poe for taking the time to do this amazing interview. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot about the two of them. Hopefully they will inspire others to adopt or rescue a dog instead of purchasing from a breeder. There are plenty of dogs who need a good home. The hairless German Shepherd is an amazing specimen and most people will probably never get to see one in person. But although they are unique and interesting looking on the outside, they are just like any other German Shepherd on the inside. They are playful, loyal and full of love! Also remember that bald spots or hair loss can have a lot of other causes besides Alopecia. If you notice any on your German Shepherd, be sure to get them checked out as soon as you can with your local vet. That could be something as simple as an allergy but they could also be due to a more serious underlying cause. Please leave a comment below and let us know what you think! Hairless German Shepherds are a rare breed of dog that has a genetic mutation that causes them to lack hair. There are many myths about this breed, but they actually do get colds and infections like other dogs. The truth is, these dogs need proper care to stay healthy and happy! What other things should I know before buying Bald German Shepherd? No, Hairless German Shepherds cannot live in cold climates. As a result, they are more susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. If you live in a cold climate and are considering getting a Hairless German Shepherd, you will need to take special precautions to keep them warm. This may include providing them with a warm coat, sweater or blanket, as well as a heated bed or cage. Here are some tips for keeping your Hairless GSD warm in cold weather: Provide them with a warm coat or sweater. Keep them inside as much as possible. Bring them inside if they start to shiver or seem cold. Provide them with a heated bed or cage. Avoid bathing them in cold water. If you are unable to provide your Hairless German Shepherd with a warm environment, you may want to consider re-homing him to a family that lives in a warmer climate.
To learn more about this crossbreed, it would help to look at the history of Labrador and Jack Russell. We will keep referring to the parent breeds' traits throughout the article to understand where this hybrid comes from and what to expect from it. Jack Russell Terrier The breed gets its name from John Russell, who bred these dogs in the early s to drive away foxes with his barking. They were bred to be hunting dogs and independent problem solvers. This is why JRTs are courageous and self-reliant. They can figure out their own ways to go about things and solve problems. The breed standard of JRTs varies because of their broad genetic make-up. Due to the distinction, the breed has even been divided into two separate breeds in England: one is Parson Russell Terrier, with longer legs, and the other is Jack Russell Terriers, having shorter legs. Labrador Retriever Labradors originated in Newfoundland, Canada, and were brought to England in the 19th century. They are hard-working dogs who used to retrieve fish and haul fishermen's boats from the water. Today, they serve society as guide dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, etc. We've discussed seven uses of Labradors in a separate post. For the last 29 years, Labradors have been the most popular breed in the United States, and for good reasons. They are smart, friendly, playful, and charming. Their high energy levels and intelligence mean that they are easy to train and can work for hours without losing their focus. What do Jack Russell Lab mixes look like? Like all mixed breeds, Jackadors' physical traits vary greatly. They may look like anything between a small Labrador and a big Jack Russell. They're short-to-medium-sized dogs, usually bigger and heavier than their parent Jack Russell but smaller and lighter than Lab. As with any dog breed, male Jackadors are a bit heavier and larger than their female counterparts. Both of Jackadors' parent breeds have water-resistant coats, so Jackadors will likely be fond of water, but some may be afraid of water because of negative experiences at a young age. Their ears are usually floppy but can also be partially erect, and their legs are proportionate to their height, giving them an athletic build. Coat and Colors Labradors come in several colors like black, white, yellow, and chocolate. JRTs are available in standard brown and white colors. Usually, Jackadors' color is determined by Labs, though it's not always the case. The hybrid can have various colors, but popular ones include black, cream, and brown. So, it's safe to say that Jackadors will also be an active breed that will need lots of physical and mental stimulation. You'll also require chewing toys and perhaps some puzzles to keep them occupied indoors. Similarly, both parent breeds are also hunting dogs, which means Jackadors will have a strong hunting instinct. Training will help reduce this behavior, but it cannot be eliminated entirely. So, it's critical to familiarize them with other animals at an early age, or else they'll instinctively see cats and other small animals as prey. These dogs like to be around their family members, so it's not a good idea to leave them alone for long periods. Doing so can result in destructive behaviors like chewing, barking, urination, etc. Jackadors are usually not an aggressive hybrid. With proper training and socialization, they can become excellent family companions, though it's essential to introduce them to kids at an early age. They must learn to be gentle with children and not chase them. Jackadors can also inherit the loud barking from their parent JRT, which means they will like to make themselves heard. Lastly, like their parent breeds, Jackadors are very loyal, loving, highly energetic, and intelligent. Jack Russells have a mostly white coat, so Jackadors are likely to inherit markings on their head and chest from their parent JRTs. A white chest or partially white face is common in these dogs. Brushing your Jackador's coat once a week and bathing occasionally will keep him clean and happy. Increase the brushing frequency to once or even twice a day during the shedding season. Exercise Labradors are highly energetic dogs, and so are JRTs. As a result, you can expect Jackadors to be just as energetic and active. Be ready to devote lots of exercise and playtime as this hybrid will drive you crazy if you don't give them enough physical activity. Their small size can allow them to adjust to apartments - traditional Labradors not so much! However, you'll have to make up for the lack of physical activity in the form of more exercise and playtime. Having a decent-sized house with a backyard will make a massive difference as it'll give your Jackador space to roam in. Both of the breeds are also very intelligent, so they must receive mental stimulation as well. JRTs are independent problem solvers, and Labs are always eager to work, so consider getting toys, puzzles, and food dispensers for your pet. How much time does your pup need for exercise? Usually, 30 to 60 minutes a day is enough, along with long walks and some running. It's best to divide this period of activity into small chunks throughout the day. As we've discussed, Jackadors become bored and restless without their daily dose of physical activity. They will begin targeting your furniture and chewing everything they can, so they must run around, play, and tire themselves out. Are Jackadors easy to train? Labradors are very intelligent and eager to please their owners. This means they are highly trainable, and you can teach them to do virtually anything, so owners will not have much difficulty training Labs themselves. On the other hand, JRTs were bred to be independent. Like Labs, they are very intelligent and energetic. However, they tend to solve problems on their own and don't depend on their human partners. JRTs are also loud, and they instinctively chase anything that moves. When these breeds are crossed, the resulting Jackadors are also intelligent and energetic, but consistent, rigorous training is required when they're at the puppy stage. This is to make sure they only chase toys and balls rather than cats or other animals. Training is also critical for keeping their barks under control. The Jack Russell Lab mix isn't always suited to homes with small pets or young kids, but early socialization and training will ensure that they are friendly toward children and adults alike. Since both JRT and Labrador are hunting dogs, it's crucial to introduce them to other pet dogs and animals at a young age to avoid any trouble later on. Overall, you can prevent Jackadors' typical behavior issues through positive reinforcement training and physical activity. They'll also benefit from plenty of interaction with other animals and people of all ages from about 10 weeks of age. Are Jackadors healthy dogs? Jackadors are generally healthy, but they can be prone to any of the diseases that plague their parent breeds. It happens when the kneecap is not correctly lined up and usually causes lameness. It's a congenital disease, though the actual misalignment occurs later on in a dog's life. Eye disorders: JRTs are prone to several painful eye diseases like glaucoma abnormally high pressure in the eye , lens luxation displaced eye lens , and cataracts. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease: This is another disease that usually only occurs in small breeds. It is similar to hip dysplasia and is often confused with it. In this condition, the ball of the hip joint is deformed, causing arthritis and wearing. Labradors Ear infections: The large, floppy ears can provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, making Labs more prone to ear infections. This can be prevented by regularly cleaning your pet's ears. Heart diseases: Labs can suffer from a range of heart problems. The most common ones are chronic degenerative valve disease, cardiomyopathy, and heartworm disease. Progressive retinal atrophy: PRA is a group of genetic diseases that affect your pet's retina. The photoreceptors inside the dog's eye deteriorate over time, which eventually leads to blindness. JRTs are not very prone to obesity, but any dog can gain weight with the wrong diet and lack of physical activity. On the other hand, Labradors are voracious eaters and can quickly become overweight, so you should monitor the amount of food your Jackador eats, especially if he takes after his Lab parent. Since there's a huge difference between JRTs and Labs, it's difficult to suggest the exact amount of kibble your Jackador should eat every day. In any case, make sure you only give your pet high-quality dog food designed for small-to-medium-sized dogs. Feeding little and often is the safest option, which means you may have to feed your pet at least three times a day. After every meal, you should also give your dog enough time to digest it before taking him out. Check out my Recommended Products section to see which foods I recommend, including custom fresh food solutions you can order online! Should you get a Jackador? The Jack Russell Lab mix is best suited for families that can dedicate enough time and attention to their physical and mental needs. Jackadors can be an excellent companion if you have an active lifestyle, but if your family cannot devote a few hours every day, you'll probably be better off getting a calmer breed. As we've discussed, you don't necessarily need a large home or a backyard, though it's certainly preferred. Early socialization and training are also indispensable, so you'll have to spend extra time on these. JRTs were initially bred to chase away foxes with their loud, consistent barking, so your Jackador might be fond of his own voice. However, he may also inherit Labrador's calm demeanor, in which case you wouldn't have to deal with the barking that much. They may inherit all the best qualities of the parent breeds, or they may get the worst of both worlds. So, only bring a Jackador puppy home if you're ready to deal with whatever traits he will have. We're not trying to scare you, but you should be aware of this fact. Overall, if you're asking yourself, 'should I get a Jackador? Where to find a Jackador puppy Since Labradors and JRTs differ a lot in size, it's unlikely that any breeder will intentionally cross them. However, accidents happen, and Jackadors do exist. Contact reputable breeders around you and online, and inquire about this hybrid. Make sure only to purchase a puppy from a certified breeder and never from puppy mills or pet stores. This will ensure you get healthy puppies whose parents have been screened for diseases. You will probably have better luck finding a Jackador in shelters or online adoption centers. Start by looking for this hybrid in your local rescue shelters. They may or may not have a Jackador available right away, but you can talk to the staff, and they will probably be able to guide you correctly. Head over to Petfinder and other such websites to look for these dogs. Sites like the ones listed below are more likely to have a Jackador than local shelters or breeders. Some may resemble the size and appearance of a Labrador if the genes of the Labrador are more dominant as in the case of a Yellow Lab Jack Russell Mix full grown. A Lab Jack Russell Mix full grown reaches its maximum height at around one year of age and may continue to fill out in the chest until he reaches 15 months of age. Some of them may also have a mixture of two or three colors with one color dominating the body and another color concentrated only on the face or legs. The Jackador coat is usually short and water-resistant like most Labradors. It is most probable that a Black Lab Jack Russell is a product of a black purebred Labrador and a hybrid Jack Russell mix with more black fur in its body. Save Big On Dog Essentials! Welcome to our pack! A black mask that envelops their eyes and ears is also common with a white patch around their noses and chin. Yellow is not one of the accepted colors of the Jack Russell, so a Jack Russell Terrier Yellow Lab Mix will most likely inherit the yellow coat color from its Labrador parent. Some tan points may appear on their chest and on their legs. This could be the result of a yellow Labrador with an extremely pale coat that is almost white in color and a typical Jack Russell. It can have the high prey instinct of the Jack Terrier making it pretty energetic and inquisitive. Lab and Jack Russell Terrier Mix love being around the company of their family. They just need early exposure to children and other pets to get them used to their presence since their high prey instinct can lead to nipping or playful biting. The Labrador Retriever and Jack Russell Terrier Mix is not considered an aggressive dog and only appears so if they sense danger because of their protective nature. Unwanted aggressive behaviors are usually a result of poor socialization and boredom. They need to be exposed to different situations and environments at an early age in order to keep their aggression in check. Do Lab Jack Russell Mix bark a lot? They will inherit this from Jack Russells who are trained to alert their master when they caught their prey. The good news is that barking can be minimized through training and making sure that they are not always left alone for long periods of time. Labrador Jack Russell Mix training Jackadors are fairly easy to train because they are intelligent and quick learners. You just need a little bit of patience sometimes and some may even inherit the independent nature of Jack Russell. Russell Terrier Lab Mix can be given a variety of exercises, from running to fast walking, and swimming to hiking in the woods. It is important to keep them active physically and mentally to avoid boredom and anxiety. If you have a backyard, patio, or deck and allow your canine companions to head outside during the day, then it is a good idea to install an automatic dog door. Many dog owners working from home or at the office love having an electronic dog door because they no longer need to open and close the door every time their pooch needs to head out to the backyard or come back into the house. Some owners also said that the electronic dog door is a lifesaver and a time saver. Before you install an electronic dog door, make sure your backyard is fully fenced in to keep your dog safe. A wireless dog fence can be installed on almost any type of terrain. Whether you live on mountainous, hilly, or open terrain, the wireless dog fence can adapt accordingly. It allows your furry friends to roam freely in your backyard while keeping them safe and sound. It will not visually interfere with your beautiful green grass spaces or scenic views. Most dog owners love the protection that wireless dog fences provide. Intruders with bad intentions may be deterred from your property when they see a dog in your yard. They will not want to get close to your property for fear that your pooch may reach them. Jack Russell Lab Mix living conditions Jack Russell Labrador Mix is well-suited to any environment as long as its energy needs are met. Jackadors, who are on the smaller side, may need extra care when temperatures get too cold or too hot especially if they have thin coats. Jack Russell Mix Lab grooming and cleaning Jackador dog is not a high-maintenance dog. Because of their short coats, dirt does not accumulate that much. When you bathe your Jack Russell Mix Lab, be sure to use a dog shampoo that will keep their skin and coat clean, healthy, and moisturized. Also, all they need is regular brushing with a slicker brush to remove any excess hair and let the natural oils in their skin naturally moisturize their fur. If a Jack Russell Terrier Mix takes after their Russell parent, they will be a small, courageous, and energetic dog with an affectionate nature and a playful personality. Jack Russell Terriers tend to be loyal and affectionate companions that get along well with children and other dogs as long as they have been properly socialized. They tend to be wary of strangers, but warm up once they are introduced. Jack Russells also have a high prey drive and an urge to chase, so they will need extra socialization and training if there are small pets in the household. They can also be prone to barking, and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not work to train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect something similar from a Jack Russell Terrier Mix. Because the other parent breed will introduce their own traits and quirks, you do want to ask the breeder about them. You can also meet the mother in person to get an idea of what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should have started some socialization and training, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Jack Russells are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with fenced yards where they can run. But, they also adapt well to apartments as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. They tend to do better with colder temperatures than a lot of dogs their size. However, they may still need some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks when the temperatures drop. Because they bond so closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. These intelligent little dogs also get bored easily. So, if they are left alone and allowed to become bored, they can become destructive. A mix could inherit none of the conditions common to their parents, or they could inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the Jack Russell side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Jack Russell Mix include cataracts and luxating patella. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies, so make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Terriers are known for their headstrong natures and stubborn streaks. The Jack Russell Terrier is no different. They are intelligent and pick up on things quickly, but their innate stubbornness can be a challenge for first-time owners to handle on their own. Because of this, puppy training classes are recommended. The other parent breed could make a Jack Russell Mix easier or more difficult to train. Novice owners will want to be prepared to enroll in obedience classes. These classes are a good idea anyway because they reinforce training and strengthen the bond you have with your puppy. Many of them also offer safe puppy play sessions for even more socialization opportunities, which makes them a great resource for dog owners. A Jack Russell Terrier Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a combination of both. If they end up with the Jack Russell coat, they will shed moderately year-round, require weekly brushing, and require a bath as needed. Cutting nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks weekly and careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs and has serious consequences for them. As a small dog breed, a Jack Russell Mix is even more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. Brushing teeth daily or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet when needed can help prevent dental diseases later in life. Jack Russell Terriers may be small, but these little dogs are sturdy, athletic, and have a lot of energy. You will probably run out of energy before they do. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough. But, you can bet a Jack Russell will be up for more activity if you are. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy breed, then you can expect a Jack Russell Mix to also be a high-energy dog. Even if the other parent breed sits in a lower activity range, you will still need to be prepared for the possibility of a high-energy dog. A fully-grown Jack Russell Terrier usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Jack Russells generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Jack Russell Terrier Mix. My name is Mitzi Michelle Brooks. I have had dogs all my life and German Shepherds most of that time. I have tried different breeds, but always come back to what I know and love. The German Shepherd Dog is the right fit for me. I breed large, old-fashioned, straight-backed, German Shepherds with a special focus on health and temperament. I am a very small breeder, all my dogs live with me, in the house. They are first, and foremost, my beloved pets. In my litters, I concentrate on the things that matter most to me: Health and Temperament. My dogs are all larger than the breed standard but with no compromise to their health. All my dogs are medium to low energy, making them easy to train and ideally suited for families. I do not breed: dogs that are hyper, dogs that show any signs of aggression, working dogs, high drive dogs, or dogs with excessive angulation. Puppies are born and raised in my home! That means your puppy goes home with you already socialized with other dogs, with cats, and familiar with all the sights and sounds of a normal home. All puppies are also current on vaccinations and on a set deworming schedule. The puppies bred here are sold as companions and pets. Just as working dogs are bred to work, my puppies are bred to live in and be a part of a family. With their low to low-medium drive, my pups are very easy for their new parents to train and still possess that famous German Shepherd instinct to protect their home and their family. These soft temperaments mean that my dogs are happy to go out and play, but just as happy to come in, lay at your feet, and interact with their family. It gives an estimate of the risk for painful osteoarthritis OA of canine hip dysplasia CHD later in life. With this information, preventive and palliative strategies can be recommended by the PennHIP-trained veterinarian. It has been extremely helpful to me as a breeder to OFA-certify my dogs. If the breeders have been breeding a long time you should see lots of names. You are supporting puppy mills if you buy a dog with these registries as they are mainly for puppy mill breeders, You know what you get with AKC because of record inspections and DNA. All Buyers should beware! Both are breeding females that are not German Shepherds they looked like husky crosses but are registering them as German Shepherds and the registry does not care. I have personally seen it and so have many others. Are you looking for size? Here are some pointers! Most breeders of large german shepherds exaggerate by 50 lbs and several inches or more! Vet certified weight means nothing if you can't call the vet! Size means little if temper , health and longevity are not there!

It's written in an easy-to-understand way but still has the expert knowledge to help any new owner successfully raise their Labradoodle from puppy to old-age. It's widely available, so pick up a copy if you see one, or click here to grab one on Amazon. A cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, the Labradoodle is an intelligent and friendly breed. They love nothing more than to be around their family. The Labradoodle combines the energy of the Labrador Retriever with the strong work ethic and intelligence of the Poodle. They do have a desire to please so training is not overly difficult but early training is necessary. The Labradoodle gets along well with everyone, from other dogs and pets to children — though their size may be a bit problematic for smaller children. They enjoy hanging out with you on the couch but can easily transition to playful and energetic. Though they will bark when a stranger is near, they will not make a good guard dog due to their friendly nature. Overall, the Labradoodle is a great pet for first-time owners thanks to their friendly nature and easy trainability. We are so grateful that we are able to help you rescue the dog of your dreams. In addition to coming back here, you can also check us out on Facebook , Twitter , and Pinterest for additional info on rescue groups near you, current posts, and pictures! A beautiful black Labradoodle puppy! They have a variety of foster homes scattered around the U. IDOG is immensely popular all across the U. Not only do they work extremely hard to rescue these animals, but they also offer one of the premier rehoming processes in the country. They typically begin by showing up at shelter or nearby foster homes where doodle breeds are placed, and work hard to find them the best home available.
