The training methods we use are designed to teach behaviors as a secondary goal. We train our puppies to focus and think before we teach them to perform behaviors. We concentrate our attention on building confidence, self-control, resilience, an ability to focus, and a love of working for and pleasing a person. Our program is built around the idea that how a puppy is trained is more important than the behaviors they learn. Every aspect of our program is centered on the fact that to us behavior in young puppies should be secondary to attitude. Good behavior is taught as well. What distinguishes our training programs from the training provided by most is the focus our puppies have on a handler. You can see this by looking at videos of our puppies in training. The very first thing we teach a puppy is to have and to enjoy having eye contact with a person. This type training will at the best produce puppies that reluctantly follow a handler and their food. The Foundation of Our Training Program The foundation of our program is teaching puppies to want to look at a handler and focus on them. We train our puppies to think instead of react. They figure out for themselves what they need to do in order to please a handler and get a reward. Our teaching methods are built on marker training and shaping instead of luring and leash pressure. Minimal Use of Luring Luring is simply having a puppy to get into a position by following a treat. We will occasionally use luring in the initial phase of training. However, we quickly change from luring to shaping and by far most of our training is done with shaping. Shaping — Our Primary Training Method Shaping is a training method that encourages a puppy to want to incrementally figure out on his own the behavior that a handler is wanting to train. We wait until a puppy starts to move in the direction of doing what we want. We reward as he gets closer to the desired behavior expecting more and more from him as he progresses. Shaping takes more time initially to train compared to traditional luring types of methods. However, the results are far better and longer lasting. We use treats but in a different way from lure-based trainers. Treats are not used as lures and bribes, but rather as rewards. In other words, our puppies are not shown the reward and asked to follow it around to entice them to work. It is only presented after the behavior is done. Puppies are encouraged to actively use their brains in order to engage the handler and to earn the reward. Our primary goal is to create in our puppies a desire to work and focus on a handler. Having puppies that are primarily focusing on the treats themselves is not enough. We want willing and happy working puppies that desire above all to please the handler. Even worse are puppies that are focused on avoiding a punishment. Formal obedience begins just after puppies are 6 weeks of age for most litters, at 6 weeks 2 days. Trained English Golden Retriever Puppies: A start in the following areas: Listed below is what we work on with these puppies. No puppy can be fully trained and dependable in any area until they are close to a year old. This program is just a start. House Training We take away all indoor litter areas before puppies are 6 weeks old. Starting the week prior, we work heavily with them making sure that all of them are doing all of their business outside. We make use a doggy door for this initial training. In fact, we believe that initial training done with a doggy door is better. A doggy door is a fantastic tool for initial house training. Rather, we gradually move toward puppies being house trained without it. See our page on House Training for more information. Consistency is key to successful house training and allowing a puppy to get himself out during the initial weeks paves the way for success. We wait until bladder control is sufficiently developed, until a love of a crate is sufficiently established, and until consistency in pottying outside has become habit before introducing a puppy to forced confinement without access to outside. All meals are fed in crates. Favorite bones are only given in crates. Puppies are given treats when they are sitting quietly in crates. We work hard to make sure that puppy crate time is not only tolerable, but that puppies actually like it. It is important that puppies develop a love for a crate before they are forced to spend long periods of time being confined. We start our crate-conditioning by leaving our puppies in their crates by slowly and incrementally increasing their crate times. This work takes place at meal times. By 10 weeks of age, our puppies are used to being crated for over 30 minutes at a time when wide awake. Training a puppy to be happy when awake is the hard part. If puppies are asleep, puppies are happy in there for much longer. By the time puppies are 12 weeks 3 day, they are used to being in crates for up to 2 hours during the day and most are happy in their crates for more than 7 hours overnight. Preliminary Work on elimination of bad Behaviors We begin working on elimination of bad behaviors such as jumping and mouthing by reinforcing good behaviors. We never rewarding the bad ones. Puppies are interacted with in such a way that they physically are unable to get to our hands with their mouths. Instead, we re-direct them. We play with them with toys instead of our hands. We never pet puppies over 8 weeks when they jump on either us or on the side of a pen. Instead we teach them to sit for attention. These bad behaviors take far more time to get rid of than this short training time provides. However, we start the process. Puppies and dogs also learn very quickly who will allow them to jump on them and who will not. New families must be consistent and continue the training. It also teaches puppies to make eye contact and to have self-control. We work with each puppy individually on getting in a crate, turning and sitting, and holding eye contact. Then we release them to eat. Puppies then spend increasingly longer periods of time in the crate with bones and random treats. This routine is carried out 3 times a day at meal times. The video below shows a condensed version of a typical meal time training session of our trained English Golden Retriever puppies at 8 weeks of age. By the time puppies leave us, this routine has built into our puppies an incredible amount of self-control. Keep in mind that these puppies are just beginning to learn these skills. Basic Obedience Building internal qualities in a puppy such as confidence, self-control, resilience, the ability to focus, and a desire to work for and please a person is our main goal. Teaching a puppy to focus and look at his owner is the one of the foundations of our training. Our primary goal is to produce puppies that want to look to their owners for direction. We teach these puppies to do so out of habit and a desire to please. It is not necessary to have puppies obey out of fear. Basic obedience includes work on heeling, coming when called, the sit and down commands, staying in position, and an introduction to the place command. We also work on good manners such as sitting for attention without jumping, waiting for a verbal release before exiting crates and pens, etc. See our page on our Training Changes for more information. Desensitization and Socialization English Golden Retrievers tend toward having softer temperaments and need more socialization than many other breeds. Overall, the imported lines tend to be calmer with softer temperaments than American Goldens and certainly much calmer than American Golden field lines. Therefore, more socialization is needed. We expose our puppies to the normal sites and sounds of a busy home. Our puppies are exposed to various outdoor areas, to various floor and ground surfaces, and to tight spaces. Our puppies are introduced to small agility equipment. We introduce them to steps, and to a variety of sounds. However, starting at 9 weeks of age, all puppies are brought on weekly mule rides. Our mule is not an animal! Rather it is a 4-wheel drive vehicle that provides a tremendous socialization experience. We also take puppies on weekly car rides starting at 7 weeks. Our Mule The mule rides are super environmental desensitization experiences. On these mule rides, we expose puppies to a wide variety of roads, neighborhoods, sights, and sounds. In addition, the experience of the mule itself is valuable. The mule is loud and sometimes a little bumpy. It is a great way to acclimate puppies to sounds as well as to the roughest car rides they would likely ever experience. Our mule rides are super desensitization opportunities. Puppies sit in a lap and enjoy being petted. They stick their noses in the air and smell all kinds of new smells. While they are enjoying the breeze, they hear all kinds of new sounds. They see a whole new world of different sights. Puppies that stay with us for our 12 Weeks program have 3 field trips to places that are close enough to our home to get to by the mule. We stop and practice obedience exercises on leash in these distracting environments. An especially challenging place that we take our puppies is alongside a busy highway. Our puppies are also socialized with a wide variety of people. This page also gives details as to what you can expect if you pick your puppy up at 11 week. Trained English Golden Retriever Puppies Options We offer several training options that are all discussed in detail on our expectations page. However, for most of our litters, we only offer a couple of these options. There is an 8 week option, a 10 week option, an 11 week option, and a 12 week option. For most families, we recommend our 11 week program. See our page on The Best Time for Puppies to Leave the Breeder to understand why we keep most if not all of our puppies until at least 9 weeks 5 days. Instead, we divert their attention from undesirable habits. We provide them plenty of exercise. We control their environment so that they have no choice but to behave themselves. They learn quickly that if they want attention, they must behave on our terms. This method of training works far better than punishment based training. However, it takes time for bad behaviors to extinguish themselves. By weeks of age, hardly any of our puppies mouth us. Jumping is minimal when one-on-one with individual puppies. However, at this young age, they are still figuring out what is acceptable and what is not. For more information, see our Training Philosophy page. This sets these young puppies up for success rather than giving them all sorts of temptations. Our philosophy of training embraces the idea of not adding difficulty to an exercise or temptations for bad behavior until habits of good behavior are firmly established. For example, we keep our shoes off the floor rather than punishing a puppy for chewing them. We provide lots of toys so that there is no need to chew the furniture. When they do, we simply divert their attention rather than punish them. A well-timed punishment can have its results in deterring certain behaviors. However, punishments come with a price. Importance of Training Method The method used by a trainer is more important than what is taught, especially in puppyhood. Any trainer can quickly teach almost any behavior using punishment based or aversive training. Though punishment based training can give quicker results for the short-term, positive training gives longer lasting results. However, it is only a start. Families must pick up where we leave off. Our website has plenty of instructional pages to help. Pricing and Pick Up Options The price for the training for our three training programs is on our puppy questionnaire. The price of puppies is due not including training fees when puppies are 5 weeks of age the same policy as for puppies leaving at 8 weeks. Training fees must be received by us at least two weeks before puppies are picked up or they must be paid by cash or certified funds. We provide a receipt if payment is by cash. There will be an additional charge if your puppy needs a health certificate. See our Payments and Policies page for more information. As of the end of June , to our knowledge no airline requires a health certificate for in-cabin flights. Delta required a health certificate for in-cabin travel for a part of .However, they have now reversed that policy and no longer require one. Keep in mind, though, that airline requirements are changing daily. Please consult your own airline. Make sure that whoever you are speaking with understands that you are asking about in-cabin travel. All airlines require health certificates for travel underneath. They must travel with their families in the cabin. Trust the answers you get online. They are the official answers. MANY employees giving out information over the phone are unfamiliar with pet policies. Call and get one answer from one employee. Who Trains the Puppies? I Karen do the initial obedience training myself along with our 28 year old daughter Jenna starting with our late litters. We also have a team who help keep things running smoothly. Our team works with puppies on potty training, socializing, and obedience skills already trained. In the past our team has consisted of three high schoolers that all worked for us for over three years. However, starting with our litters, two of the three have moved off to college. One daughter, Jenna, has been an incredible trainer for many years. She will be making Summer Brook puppies her priority. The other, Elise, is a socialization superstar and will be taking off college for the winter and spring to work full time with Summer Brook. Fans are optional throughout the entire interior. We have additional propane heaters that will work with no electricity. The floors have built in drainage and are covered in grippy flecked epoxy. Our dogs have constant access to water and have comfortable Kuranda beds to lay on. We have designated areas for our older puppies after mom is done nursing them. These areas consist of very nice over-sized play areas. The walls are made out of washable white plastic, and we use g-flooring with fresh wood chips for the bedding. The puppies have plenty of toys and their own Kuranda bed s that they love to lay on or hide below it. Our outside run area consists of a fully covered roof, so our dogs are protected from the elements, with lighting and fans. The play area has over feet of beautiful black chain link fencing. The large play area also offers a doggy playground area where they have plenty of toys to tug and pull on. About our Dogs: We strive to provide the best and healthiest lines of Golden Retrievers. We spend endless hours in search and communication with multiple breeders from all over the United States. Checking pedigrees and clearances prior to committing with a new line. We have made some amazing relationships with some of the best breeders, all of which share the same common goal of breeding healthy AKC Golden Retrievers. We raise and train all of our puppies within our home. We work with commands, potty training, and socialization on many different platforms and various environments. Early on we are verifying their personality and traits are conclusive with a possible prospect for future breeding. As time goes on, we decide if they are a good candidate or not for breeding. If they are a good candidate additional health testing is scheduled per their age. We conduct several medical tests to verify healthy lines prior to breeding. The health tests set us apart from most breeders that claim their dogs are healthy per a veterinarian check or that claim that they conduct DNA genetic health testing but nothing else. One of the first health tests that we conduct and one of the most important tests on all our dogs, is DNA genetic testing. We have used Animal Genetics in the past but have been shifting towards using Embark. This test allows us to verify we have the best pairing of parents prior to breeding and that we are not passing on bad genes that could be avoidable issues in the future. After our dogs turn 1, they proceed to get OFA testing of their eyes and heart. A specialist either looks at their eyes or heart to verify they have no health conditions that could be passed to their offspring. If we are lucky enough that our young golden passes, we will move forward to the next health testing stage. The next health test that we typically conduct once our young golden is 1. While they are sedated to have these x-rays we usually also have Penn Hip testing done. Also, per our vet the Penn Hip is a better test to know the overall health of the hips as they test the elasticity and movement rather then judging based on an image. Last health test we do is done at the age of 2 years old. As the dogs age their bones calcify, a dog with failing elbow or hips younger then 2 could very well change to passing once they turn 2. Under each dog there is a link from K9 data. Unfortunately K9 data will not allow preliminary testing information in the link which is the OFA elbow and hip test results if the dog is under 2 years of age when the test is conducted. However we do list the preliminary test results under each dog. Once we have the official results K9 data will be updated to reflect their latest test results. We are constantly conducting health tests and updating K9 data as well as the webpage. Lots of factors could play into why a dog could fail their OFA elbows or hip tests. It may not necessarily be genetic but instead could be from the environment that they are raised in. Limiting their jumping heights is extremely important. Simply slipping on ice can cause unforeseen affects to their overall development. Lack of vitamin C in their food is another considered attribute to not having passing scores. All of these factors are highly overseen during the raising of our potential breeding dogs. Unfortunately, sometimes our dogs do not pass all of their tests. We sometimes keep them, but we also have found amazing homes for them. We are even more particular in their home placement as we know their personalities and what would be the best fit. They will be spayed prior or be contracted to be spayed soon after being placed in their new homes. We are very focused on ensuring we know our breeding stock through both their individual health and their genealogy testing. Our dogs and puppies get a lot of socializing. Daily they are engaged with our other dogs, our young sons, our friends, and other family members. They all get a ton of love and attention. This ensures they keep up on their house manners and it also makes it incredibly easier when pregnant moms deliver within our home. Our dogs are not kept outdoors like you might see with other breeders. We also have them go into large fenced in play areas where they play in large groups with each other. We do not show our dogs or conduct any competitions with them. When I am not raising my children, I am constantly spending time with my dogs or interacting with potential customers. My husband works many hours in his law enforcement career to dedicate any additional time in competitions, trials, or shows. Once he retires and the children are older, we may pursue that however it is not our current focus. Some of the lighter goldens that we have also known as English Creams do have championship titles in their bloodlines as does our darker red field goldens. Any of our puppies with proper training could and would be amazing for shows or hunting trials as its in their bloodline. About our Puppies: I usually make the determination of puppies after 30 days of a breeding. I have my own ultrasound machine and can get a good determination of how many puppies are present. It does not give me an exact count. Only way to really narrow down the number of puppies is by an x-ray, around the day mark. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. The fifth week if all are doing well, I begin the weaning process where mom is nursing less and less as I introduce kibble to their diet. We begin the deworming process and also begin the first vaccine. We do not travel with the puppies to an animal hospital. I feel it could be stressful for the puppies and creates an opportunity for the puppies to be exposed to other pet sicknesses. I have a traveling vet come and conduct full physicals on all of the puppies. You will receive a copy of her report in the puppy folder upon pickup date. We have outside play areas and toys for them to interact with. They will also be played with by children and handled by adults. They will have several toys to interact with. Obstacles will be in there play pens to learn jumping and crawling. Process Purchasing a Puppy: If you decide that you would like to move forward with getting a puppy, we recommend that you first look at the females and the males that we have. Sometimes the males could change if multiple females come into heat at the same time. Next, I would like to have a phone interview so we can find out more about yourself and the home that a puppy of mine would be going to. In our discussion I would like to know which mother you were leaning towards and whether you prefer a male or female puppy. I can go over all additional questions that you may have including total costs. If both parties are fully satisfied, I will move forward with sending you over the contract. I sell all my puppies with limited AKC registration. Under certain circumstances I will offer full AKC registration for an additional charge. If you are wondering what the difference is between limited and full registration. Limited registration means you can never breed a puppy from me and it will be expected upon proper age that the dog is spayed. Full registration is only for breeders that want to purchase a puppy with intentions of breeding. I am not against giving another breeder full registration however it must be discussed prior, and all requirements must be met that I have. I do require the final payment to be in cash upon pickup of the puppy, so there no issues of bounced checks or issues with sending monies from one bank institution to another. No exceptions. I typically only reserve the first 3 females and the first 3 males as there are no guarantees of how many puppies are born. I go in order of when I am contacted. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick. It seems to be the fairest method I have come across and will be moving forward with that process unless I discover a better way. I also reserve the right to have first pick so I can sustain my future breeding line as it dictates. I do not allow visitation to the puppies until they are ready for pickup. It also increases the chances for the puppies to get sick and potentially all die from a condition call parvo, as they are not full vaccinated. I have scheduled meetings with individuals that would like to meet me and the adult dogs fully vaccinated prior to making a commitment but not when I have current litters. I would recommend if you want to see the puppies earlier to log into Facebook and follow my page on there. I conduct live videos where you can see all the puppies. After a few weeks old we begin to collar them so you can tell them apart better. I do not place or pick certain pups for certain homes. Some people may not like that due to a puppies drive or behavior. I personally feel training is key to your dogs behavior. You have to spend time with this puppy and be consistent. Goldens just want to please you, but they will test you to learn their place in the household. If you lack experience in training dogs, I do recommend you work with a trainer and read literature so you can achieve the most success with your puppy. You will get an hour to choose your puppy. Please be mindful as I will have others scheduled after your hour of time is completed. I will need some of that time to go over paperwork that is required through the state to complete. I have no problems if you want to bring a trainer or conduct your own tests to see if one puppy might be a better fit based on their opinion. Please be respectful of my property and do not go adventuring around wherever you may like without me being present. Once you pick your puppy and all paperwork has been completed, you will be provided with vet records of your puppy and the vaccines that were previously given. At this time, I do not microchip any puppies. I personally feel the best time to microchip a puppy is when they are sedated which I recommend during the spay. We do require that you schedule an appointment with your vet within 14 days of the pickup date. You may want to schedule this prior to arrival as animal hospitals have been extremely busy. We will have gift bag for you. There will be some surprises in there for your pup, including enough puppy food for the next several days so you can either remain on it or gradually change the food to one of your liking. Malcolm This gorgeous 13mth old, neutered boy is having to be rehomed due to the owners working times changing, which stresses Mally out. He does suffer from separation anxiety which will need to be overcome slowly. He lives with another dog and chickens which he is fine with. He is used to being around children aged 3 and upwards. Mally is also ball obsessed and will chase wildlife if given the chance. Other naughty habits include opening doors and wandering off. He needs to go to a home where he will be given lots of attention and training but once sorted he will be a lovely family pet. She is having to be rehomed as she has become very protective of her sister which is causing problems. She lives with children of all ages who also have friends over which she is fine with. On walks together Charlie will protect her sister but on her own is fine to a point but will need more training to stop any issues raising. Jake This big handsome lad is Jake who is 8 years old. He is an ex-police dog who has lived with a west highland terrier and other police dogs but barks initially at strange dogs. Happy to be handled and walked by the kennel staff, likes his walks. We are not sure if he is used to children so we would prefer an adult home only. We think he chases cats. Lovely older boy that deserves a nice retirement home. Tess - from Romania Tess is approximately 18 months old. And is a GSD cross. She is spayed and vaccinated. She is very playful and good on the lead. Tess is food and bed dominant but otherwise will live with other dogs very happily. Bella This is 6yr old Bella. An unspayed, long coated bitch. She is a lovely playful girl, who lives with another dog, but is quite jealous of any attention that dog gets. She is not microchipped, and not up to date with vaccinations. Bella does pull on the lead, so would need correcting. Travels well. Is fine with other dogs just wants to play, sometimes a bit too boisterously. Cats a definite no. A friendly girl, who needs a nice active home. Good with children over 7 yrs only because he gets boisterous playing with toys not food or toy aggressive, pulls o the lead but he has not been taught how to walk properly and he doesn't get out. The owners have a baby now so Louie doesn't get walked and have the attention they feel he deserves. Hates cats. Lovely family dog. All he wanted was to give our volunteer kisses.Ben This handsome boy is 4 yr old, neutered male, Ben. He is a really fantastic friendly dog, who adores children of all ages. He has a great temperament, but at the moment is very frustrated. His owner has died and he is pining for him. He rattles the letterbox to ask for a walk. Loves other dogs. Cats, don't think he would bother them. House trained and loves going in the car. Needs a nice loving home. Storm Storm is a very good all-rounder, very quiet, friendly greeting even if a bit excited but does not jump up, he will need some refresher work on his basic training and is very strong on the lead. None of this should be difficult, as he loves a treat and being fussed; Storm did not mind me looking in his mouth or feeling him all over but did not stand still while I did this. This dog will be a loyal partner to someone with just a little effort on the basic training, said to be very good with children not seen as none around at the time good with other dogs. Storm has lived with cats in past, but will chase strange cats, does not bark even when callers knock at the door, so no good as a guard dog. The owner is very reluctant to give up Storm, but realises that the property and the work circumstances are not good for Storm. The property has no garden, so now Storm is shut in on his own for approximately 8 hours every day. The owner knows it would be best if Storm can go to a home that someone is there for him and take him for long walks, as the owner says it is the hardest decision he has ever had to make. Avek This stunning boy is month old Avek, a long-coated, entire, white male. His lady owner in Cumbria is unable to give him the time, attention and socialisation he needs and is reluctantly parting with him. He pulls on the lead and is, therefore, not getting the exercise he needs. He is initially nervous of strangers and needs a careful introduction, although he has never bitten anyone. Our volunteer introduced him to his bitch and Avek played with her, but we are told he can be nervous of some dogs, so he is probably best rehomed with a bitch or as an only dog. House-trained and vaccinated. He needs a firm, but gentle, experienced owner. Ronnie This stunner is 2 yr old, unspayed bitch, Ronnie. She has a temperament that doesnt come along very often. Ronnie is excellent with children of all ages too. She has no aggression in her whatsoever. Very well behaved, excellent off lead, fine with crowds. Does get travel sick on long journeys.
