To achieve this goal we keep dogs from each generation to produce our very unique Goldendoodles. This is the foundation of our breeding program. Everything that we breed goes back to the F1 English Goldendoodles. This proved to be very successful for allergy sufferers and more families were able to experience the love of a dog. F1B Goldendoodles will have a higher success rate for non-shedding and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. This breeding allows us to produce the Smeraglia type that everyone knows and loves. They also have a high success rate for non-shedding and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. Many families desire this breeding because it can have a little more Golden Retriever than the F1B. Most are low to non-shedders. Sometimes, they may even look more like the Retriever side of the family with a flat more sporty coat, rather than the soft fluffy Teddy Bear coats. This generation is often sought after from the Retriever lover that wants a smaller or less shedding Retriever like doodle. This is a more rare breeding. Funny enough, the first examples of Goldendoodles were breed by Monica Dickens — the great granddaughter of Charles Dickens — in .The Goldendoodle breed was originally pioneered to combine the intelligence and non-shedding coat of the Poodle with the family-friendly temperament of the Golden Retriever. This makes for a dog that is on average healthier than either a Poodle or a Golden Retriever alone. This also makes the Goldendoodle breed hypoallergenic , with many different coat types and colors. With proper genetic testing , we can accurately determine if a Goldendoodle puppy will have a wavy or curly coat. A curly coat is more hypoallergenic than a wavy coat, but requires more regular grooming. However they do need to be brushed regularly to keep their coat soft and clean. How big do Goldendoodles get? Blue-Eyed Golden Retrievers Could Suffer From A Medical Problem Golden retrievers are susceptible to several different health issues , some of which could cause them to appear to have blue eyes. Here are a few of them: Cataracts Cataracts are clouding of the lens of the eye that can leave them looking cloudy or blue. They may develop from disease, injury, old age, or genetic disorders. The bigger and denser they become, the more likely they are to lead to blindness, so bring your dog to the vet if you think they may have cataracts. Nuclear Sclerosis Many dog owners get cataracts and nuclear sclerosis mixed up. This is because they both give a cloudy, bluish hue to the eye. Glaucoma Glaucoma is a disease where the pressure in the eye is above normal levels. There are several potential causes, including injury or tumors, and it may lead to blindness. And like nuclear sclerosis and cataracts, glaucoma may cause the eyes to become cloudy or bluish in color. It could be a serious problem that could cause blindness. Good breeders are focused on the health and temperament of the puppies, and everything else is secondary. Conclusion Golden retrievers normally have brown eyes, not blue eyes. Have any questions about blue-eyed golden retrievers? Let me know down in the comments! Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! Related articles:. Boxer Pitbull You can see just how many dog breeds have the blue-eyed gene in their makeup, and some of these breeds even allow this genetic presentation in registered dogs. You will need to make sure that the breeder can provide you with accurate information about the blue-eyed dogs that they are selling so you can look into the possible health concerns that your dog might show later on. Golden Retrievers have their own common breed health issues , but you need to be aware of the risks related to the other parent as well. Remember also that these other breeds have their own specific temperaments that they were bred with for purposes like hunting, protection, and so forth. This can impact the attitude and temperament of the dog that you are getting from this breeder. The differences in your Golden Retriever from breed standard might be more significant than just the blue eyes. If you are looking for a kind, sweet, loyal family dog, you might still get this kind of pet from a breeder making blue-eyed Golden Retrievers, but it is less likely. There can be many changes to the way that your dog acts, the way they feel about kids and cats in your home, and more just related to the other breed that is mixed with the Golden Retriever. These are the considerations that many people forget about when they are attracted to an unusual color or breed characteristic in a litter of puppies. Yes, many puppies have what look like dark blue eyes when they are born. As they get more mature, the blue color will turn to brown in purebred dogs. If you had felt a sense of panic when you went to look at your purebred puppy because its eyes appeared blue, there is no reason to be concerned. This is totally normal in very young puppies. However, if the dog that you have picked out has very blue eyes when it is approaching a few months old, this dog will likely have blue eyes for life. This is one of the things that many people have concerns about when they see pictures of a purebred litter. Rest assured that a breeder who is AKC certified will never breed blue-eyed dogs, and they will be able to prove that none of their animals has ever had blue eyes. The important thing to remember when you are dog shopping is that you should ask as many questions as it takes for you to be comfortable with your purchase. Responsible breeders will be willing to answer all the questions that you have. You should be concerned about a breeder that will not reply to questions or who seems to be cagey about answering questions about their litters. This is often a sign that something is not right, and you should consider looking for another breeder if this is the way that the breeder you are looking into is behaving. There are other reasons that a Golden Retriever might have blue eyes, and these are more concerning than just irresponsible breeding practices. You should be aware of the other reasons that this eye color might be present in a litter so that you can decide if you are interested in carrying on with getting a puppy from the litter in question. Albinism This is not common in the Golden Retriever breed, but there are albino genes in all animal populations. Responsible breeders will not sell puppies with albinism, and they will never breed the parents again that made this defect come to the forefront. These are all albino animals, and they often suffer from significant health issues throughout their life. Albino animals will have pink around their eyes in most cases, but they do not have to appear this way. Some albino dogs will just have blue eyes. Another dead giveaway, however, is the pink nose that often comes along with the albino gene. If the dog that you are looking at has blue eyes but a dark nose, it is just not purebred. If the nose is pink, it is an albino animal. Recessive Genes Brown eyes genes are dominant, so they should be expressed first when two purebred dogs are crossed. There is the chance that a dog that should not have been registered as purebred can land in the gene pool and create a recessive litter, but this is very uncommon. Most dog breeds that have been accepted by the AKC with the standard for brown eyes have been so carefully bred that this is not a concern. Again, just as with albino animals, responsible breeders will never allow these animals with recessive genes to be sold to new homes. It is always a red flag when a breeder is offering a blue-eyed litter of Golden Retrievers for sale because of the health risks associated with animals with recessive genes. Cataracts This was mentioned earlier, but it is worth some more discussion. Golden Retrievers are a breed that is prone to eye issues, and there are some unethical breeders that might offer litters of puppies for sale that have eye defects. These usually become worse over time, and they can lead to a cloudy, bluish eye appearance. Make sure that you do not look at young puppies who are showing signs of an eye defect and think that they are blue-eyed. A good way to check the difference between blue eyes and eyes with health issues is to take the dog over to the light and look at their eyes. Blue eyes will look clear and normal, while eyes with health issues will appear cloudy and dull and without sheen. This is a great way to check this claim by a breeder to make sure that you are not being given an animal that will actually be blind early in life. This can be all right, but you need to be aware that when you support irresponsible breeders, they continue to make more of the same litters with the same potential health concerns. Your dog will also likely have more health problems during its life, and you should be prepared for a pet that might not have a normal lifespan. When you choose not to engage with breeders who are not responsible, you will also be helping to preserve these carefully-bred animals that are created with care by other breeders. While a Golden Retriever puppy from a skilled breeder will never have blue eyes, you will be getting a dog who represents the breed, and that was created with care. Responsible breeders will also take the time to certify their dogs for all kinds of health conditions, and they will stand by their pet animals if something happens that makes your dog a poor fit for your needs. The protections and benefits of shopping with a skilled breeder are numerous, and you will always be better served by paying a little more and avoiding dogs that have blue eyes. If you are really sold on having a dog that has blue eyes, there are so many breeds that can have blue eyes without having questionable breeding. Huskies, Aussies, and Border Collies can have blue eyes and still be purebred. There are many other options as well for this kind of trait if you want to have a blue-eyed dog that you can trust the breeder to have created with care. While a lot of these breeds will not offer you the same sweet, kind, and gentle temperament that a Golden Retriever can offer, you will still have a loving companion in your home that has the blue eyes that you were looking for. There is nothing good to be gained by supporting unethical breeders, and you will find that your puppy might not be very healthy either. While it can be tempting to just get one anyhow because you think that they are cute or because you feel bad for them, be sure that you are prepared for what this purchase might mean. Your dog could enjoy a healthy and full life with you, or they might be very sickly and have lots of problems that a dog that comes from a quality breeder will not. It is usually worth reaching out to some other recognized breeders if you notice that there is someone offering blue-eyed Golden Retrievers for sale. These breeders are very motivated to help regulate their own breeding community, and they can reach out to the breeder. Sometimes local breeders who are not registered with the AKC do not realize that this is a no-no. This is a better method of handling this issue than telling the breeder yourself that they are not providing puppies that will be healthy. Taking on a dog with a genetic defect can be a really tough process, which is why there are rescues that are devoted to this process. If you really want to get a blue-eyed Golden Retriever, you should contact shelters that specialize in these kinds of dogs and get a puppy from a shelter. This will support the effort to end this kind of irresponsible breeding, and you will get the blue-eyed dog that you have been wanting. Golden Retriever Recommendations and Resources. A few of them are: Cataracts A cataract is an eye illness when the eye lens becomes cloudy, leaving the eyes looking blue or cloudy. This may arise as a result of injury, genetic disorders, disease, or old age. The denser and bigger they become, the more likely it is for them to lead to blindness. Glaucoma Glaucoma is an illness where the eye pressure has levels that are higher than normal. It can be caused by a few potential events, such as tumors or injury, and can also lead to blindness. It could be a serious issue that could cause blindness. Nuclear Sclerosis Nuclear sclerosis and cataracts are often confused by many dog owners. There are three things to keep in mind when looking to get a blue eyed Golden Retriever: The eyes of a Golden Retriever puppy will change to the color brown as they grow older. Blue eyed Golden Retrievers could be the result of health issues. Most Golden Retrievers with blue eyes are the result of mixing with another breed of dog. You see, golden retriever puppies are born with blue eyes, and older goldens may have blue eyes due to cataracts or other eye problems. Golden retriever mixes, such as the golden Aussie , golden retriever pit bull mix , or Goberian husky may also have blue eyes. As you can see, the blue-eyed golden retriever is a bigger riddle than it seems. A blue retriever can be born in a litter of two purebred, brown-eyed golden retrievers. In any other sense, these blue golden retriever puppies should look and behave like any typical purebred golden. While these rules may seem pointless and even exclude perfectly sound dogs, the main point of breed standards is to preserve distinct breeds from being lost over time. It takes a lot of years of planned and selective breeding to create a dog breed for a particular purpose, such as guarding, hunting, retrieving, herding, and so on. Without strict breeding standards, all of those traits can easily get lost in future generations. There are several explanations for blue eyes in golden retrievers. While any of these scenarios are likely, crossbreeding is the most common reason for blue eyes in golden retrievers. Check out the following most likely causes of blue eyes in golden retrievers: Recessive Genes The genes that are responsible for creating brown-colored eyes in dogs are dominant, which is the main reason why so many dog breeds have brown eyes. According to the breed standard, golden retrievers should have brown eyes, and they were deliberately bred for many generations to exhibit this trait. Consequently, recessive genes that cause blue eyes have become less common than before. There is a very small chance that two golden retrievers that carry recessive genes for blue eyes are bred together. If by any chance this does happen, some of their offspring may inherit blue eyes. Cataracts Blue eyes in golden retrievers can also be caused by several health issues, with cataracts being the most common one. Cataracts are an eye illness that causes clouding of the lens of the eyes, making them appear cloudy or blue. Cataracts can develop very slowly or almost overnight and can be caused by injury, disease, genetic disorders, or old age. The bigger and cloudier cataracts become, the more likely that they will lead to complete blindness. Nuclear Sclerosis Nuclear sclerosis or lenticular sclerosis is a painless condition that creates a bluish or transparent haze in the lens of the eye. This condition is often seen in middle-aged and senior dogs and is considered a normal part of aging. Glaucoma Glaucoma is a disease of the eye that is characterized by increased intraocular pressure within the eye. This condition is the result of inadequate drainage of aqueous fluids, which is caused by tumors, interocular bleeding, uveitis, injury, or damage to the lens. Albino animals lack the genes needed for producing melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin and hair. Due to the lack of melanin, albino dogs have white hair, pink skin, and pink noses. While albinism is rare in dogs, it can still happen and will cause an affected golden retriever to have blue instead of brown eyes. As their eyes start to develop, their sight will improve, and their eyes will gradually change color from blue to brown. If you are looking to purchase a purebred golden retriever and a breeder tries to sell you a blue-eyed golden retriever, turn around and walk away! Are blue eyes in dogs bad? The blue color can be caused by the lack of pigment or the merle gene, which has been linked with hearing impairments. They may very well be the offspring of two purebred golden retrievers, but they have not inherited the particular combination of genetic traits that define the breed. This may sound like a lot of needless rules that exclude some dogs for no good reason. It takes many generations of breeding to create a dog breed with the characteristics suited for a particular purpose—hunting birds, herding sheep, pulling a sled, and so on. Causes of Blue Eyes in Golden Retrievers There are two explanations for blue eyes in the offspring of purebred golden retrievers. One is albinism , and the other is recessive genes for blue eyes. But blue eyes as a result of crossbreeding are much more common than either of these scenarios. Albino animals lack the genes for producing melanin , the pigment that colors hair and skin. This causes them to have white hair and pink skin. Albinism is rare in dogs. Two copies of the recessive genes for albinism have to be inherited for a dog to display these traits. Dogs with albinism are more likely to have blue eyes. Albino dogs also have pink noses and white fur. Two purebred golden retriever parents can possibly produce an albino puppy; this would be one of the rare cases where a blue-eyed dog can be a non-conforming golden retriever. Recessive Genes The genes that are associated with brown eyes are dominant , and so most dogs have brown eyes. This would be the second circumstance where a blue-eyed dog could be considered a non-conforming golden retriever. Some golden mixes are easy to spot as mixes, while others can look a lot like purebred golden retrievers. Many have the coloring of a golden and the beautiful curls of a poodle. Some have the golden retriever coat color and the blue eyes common to border collies. Want to see an adorable golden boxer pup at play? Feeding is an evergreen topic among Frenchie parents in our Facebook group. They know they should feed their puppy with high-quality premium dog food to keep their baby healthy and fit, but they are left puzzled when they see the plethora of different choices. The answer is actually quite simple: every Frenchie is different and what works for one puppy may unfortunately cause problems for the other. The best French Bulldog breeders will always give you advice on how to continue feeding your puppy once you welcome them home. So what are the most important things to consider while trying to find the perfect food for your Frenchie? Read on to find out! The quality of dog food is always determined by the percentage of its protein content, in other words, the amount of meat or fish it contains. So what should you pay attention to when looking at the ingredients list? This could be beef, lamb, salmon, or any other type of meat. The list usually ends with some sort of animal fat, vegetables, and fruits. Jasper, available French Bulldog puppy at TomKings Puppies Any other ingredient not mentioned above is only included to increase the volume of the dog food and to ensure the most economical production possible. So, if you see that a food contains an unrealistic amount of filler ingredients like wheat, corn, or chemical preservatives, it is definitely not a suitable and healthy choice for your Frenchie. Dog foods without chicken and grains A question that always comes up when choosing the right food for a Frenchie is whether it has to be chicken or grain-free. For that reason, we usually recommend giving chicken and grain-free food right from the start to avoid any possible problems. Makayla, French Bulldog puppy at TomKings Puppies That means that if you look at the list of ingredients, you can find companies whose food meets all the criteria we mentioned above and is much more affordable. Like with so many things, the name is not everything! On the other hand, if the kibble is too large they will have difficulties consuming the food. The flavor of the dog food When looking at dog foods, you can choose from lots of different flavors like a lamb, fish, beef, duck, etc. If one of the foods from a particular brand works fine for your Frenchie, the flavors can and should be changed as long as they have the same nutritional values. A varied diet is important not only for humans but dogs as well, not to mention that your fur baby will be very happy to taste some new flavors. The stool of your Frenchie A very important criterion and perhaps the best indicator of the given food is suitable for your Frenchie is their stool. A healthy stool should always be completely solid, which means you can easily collect it with a bag. You should always ensure a smooth transition by gradually mixing in more and more of the new food with the old to avoid any dietary issues. Signs of a food allergy in your Frenchie We have already mentioned that Frenchies tend to be allergic to chicken, but what are the actual signs of a food allergy? The most common symptoms include scratching, hair loss, dull lifeless fur, inflamed eyes and ears often with some discharge, paw licking, swelling, but also vomiting, and loose stools. You may not notice all of these and the degree to which they occur may also vary. Any of these symptoms indicate that an immediate change of diet is necessary, about which you should always consult your vet first. Eating a bit more slowly and with less appetite are usually signs telling you to cut out the middle meal. As for the amount, nice-looking French Bulldogs are a bit stockier, so you should always increase and lower the amount of their food with that in mind. Read our article to learn more about maintaining a healthy body weight for your Frenchie. Look for products that are labeled as complete and balanced, which means they contain all the essential nutrients your French Bulldog needs in the right proportions. Avoid feeding table scraps or high-calorie treats, and make sure to provide plenty of opportunities for exercise and play. In some cases, a prescription diet recommended by a veterinarian may be necessary to help your French Bulldog achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Best food for French Bulldogs with skin allergies If your French Bulldog has skin allergies, it is important to choose a diet that is specially formulated to help support skin health and minimize potential allergens. Consultation with a veterinarian is also recommended to determine the best course of action. Some high-quality dog food brands offer special formulas that are designed for dogs with skin allergies. These foods typically contain limited ingredients and exclude common allergens such as wheat, soy, chicken, and dairy products. Instead, they may use alternative protein sources such as fish or venison and may contain added omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to help support skin health. Some veterinarians may also recommend prescription diets that are formulated specifically to manage skin allergies in dogs. These diets may contain hydrolyzed proteins, which have been broken down into smaller components to minimize the risk of an allergic reaction. Even though processed dog foods might not look healthy to us, they actually contain all the nutrients that Frenchies need to stay healthy. Home-made and raw diets like B. Should I opt for dry kibble or canned wet food? Wet foods are of course more appealing to dogs, which means they get used to them easily and will not want to eat dry food again. If your Frenchie is a picky eater you can mix the dry and wet food but never give them the latter only. We recommend wet food for dogs who are ill and have no appetite. How much time does my puppy need to adjust to a new food? At what age should I switch to adult food for my French Bulldog? We usually recommend switching to adult food at the age of months old. If you notice that your puppy looks a bit chubbier or bigger compared to other Frenchies you can make this change even sooner. What is the best food for a Frenchie puppy? The best choice for your Frenchie puppy is to continue providing the same brand the breeder used to provide. If so, understanding the costs associated with purchasing and maintaining this popular crossbreed is essential. This comprehensive Cockapoo pricing guide will help you make an informed decision as you search for your perfect companion. Cockapoos, a crossbreed between the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, have gained immense popularity as a companion dog in part due to their gorgeous looks, intelligence, and hypoallergenic qualities. This price can change depending on where you buy it from, the color or gender of Cockapoo, or even the Cockapoos parents and where they come from. Rescue shelters provide a noble option for those who wish to give a loving home to a dog in need. It may be challenging to find a specific breed at a shelter, but with patience and persistence, you might find the Cockapoo you've been dreaming of. Be cautious when dealing with classifieds, as the reputation of the breeders and their breeding standards can be unclear. Make sure to do thorough research before purchasing a puppy from classified ads. Reputable breeders are more likely to provide transparent information about their puppies and their breeding practices. While it's essential to do your homework before purchasing from any breeder, buying from a reputable breeder often reduces the risks associated with purchasing a puppy. In this section, we will delve into the cost of Cockapoos, why they are so popular, their maintenance requirements, and their shedding tendencies. Why are Cockapoos so Popular? Cockapoos are popular for several reasons: Temperament: They are known for their friendly and affectionate nature, making them excellent family pets and companions. Cockapoo Size : Cockapoos are a small to medium-sized dog, making them suitable for various living situations, including apartments and homes with small yards. Hypoallergenic: Cockapoos are considered hypoallergenicTheir Poodle lineage gives them a low-shedding coat, making them a great choice for people with allergies. Intelligence: Cockapoos are intelligent and easily trainable, which makes them suitable for first-time dog owners. Cockapoo Lifespan : Cockapoos are a healthy breed and due to their smaller size tend to live relatively long lives when compared with other breeds. Are Cockapoos High Maintenance? Cockapoos require a moderate level of maintenance. While their grooming needs may be higher due to their unique coat, their exercise and training requirements are relatively manageable. Regular brushing, professional grooming every weeks, and daily walks or play sessions are essential for maintaining their physical and mental well-being. Do Cockapoos Shed a Lot? Cockapoos inherit a low-shedding coat from their Poodle parent, which means they typically shed less than other breeds. This characteristic is one of the reasons they are popular among allergy sufferers. However, it's important to note that no dog breed is entirely hypoallergenic, and individual dogs may shed more or less depending on their specific coat type. Things to Watch Out for When Purchasing a Cockapoo When looking for your perfect Cockapoo puppy , consider the following: Gathering information: Look for detailed information about the breeder, their history, and the Cockapoo puppy. Ensuring a loving home: Ask if you can visit the breeder's home or request a video call to see the living conditions and the environment where the puppies are raised. Avoiding public meetings: Do not meet the breeder in a public place, as this could be a red flag indicating that they are hiding something. Reviewing pictures and videos: Look for consistency in images and videos to ensure they are authentic and not taken from other sources. Health guarantees and training programs: Check for clear health guarantees and inquire about training programs offered by the breeder. The Lifetime Cost Associated with Raising Cockapoos Cockapoo owners should anticipate recurring costs, such as food, toys, and healthcare. Food Cockapoos require high-quality dog food to maintain their energy levels and overall health. Regularly replacing toys keeps your pet entertained and prevents boredom. Cockapoo Healthcare and Maintenance Costs When it comes to caring for your Cockapoo, several healthcare and maintenance expenses are essential to consider. Vaccinations Vaccinations are necessary to protect your Cockapoo from various diseases, such as distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. Dental Care Proper dental care is essential for maintaining your Cockapoo's oral health and preventing issues like gum disease and tooth decay. Additionally, consider investing in dental chews, toothbrushes, and toothpaste for at-home dental care. Grooming Cockapoos have a unique coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting and keep them looking their best. Additionally, grooming supplies such as brushes, combs, and shampoos should be purchased for at-home maintenance. In summary, it's essential to understand and consider these healthcare and maintenance costs when bringing a Cockapoo into your home. Proper care and regular check-ups will ensure your pet stays healthy and happy throughout their life. Conclusion Understanding the costs associated with purchasing and raising a Cockapoo is essential when considering this lovable breed. Take the time to research breeders, gather ample information, and be prepared for both the one-time and recurring costs. Dogs love to be entertained and can find entertainment in just about anything. You can choose to buy toys for your dog, or you can DIY some toys to cut down on the expense. If you want, you can find a stick in your yard for him to play with. Essentially, when it comes to toys, you will only spend as much as you want to. You can pay a dog sitter to keep them company while you are at work, or perhaps a dog walker to go on a regular jog with them. Or maybe you work from home and can walk your dog yourself, so this expense is unnecessary. Again, there is plenty of wiggle room here. Training is another area you may want to invest in. Although professional trainers can be beneficial, they may not be necessary. Cockapoos are intelligent dogs and can be easily trained at home. In addition to the general expenses associated with a cockapoo, there are other costs that you will need to consider. However, there are also ways to save money if you want to own a cockapoo on a budget. Additional Costs to Factor In Additional costs you will need to consider include paying pet sitters or boarding expenses when you are away for an extended period. Bringing your dog on vacation sounds fun, but it is not always possible. You must ensure you can cover their care while you are away. Unexpected illnesses and accidents can also present you with unanticipated costs. While pet insurance can be a helpful tool to mitigate some of those expenses, it generally will not cover everything. If your cockapoo gets into mischief and accidentally destroys something in the house, that can cause another unexpected expense. There will always be expenses you cannot expect, so it is crucial to be prepared. You can cut back on unnecessary expenses, such as buying your dog toys when you can easily entertain him. Another option is to try and avoid buying from a breeder to cut down on the high initial expenses, but it will be challenging to find a cockapoo for free or for adoption. Also, free or adopted cockapoos can come with health issues that bred cockapoos are usually checked for, so it is possible that trying to save money by avoiding a breeder may cost you in the future. You can also buy more affordable food rather than high-priced gourmet meals. There are always areas to cut expenses; it is just a matter of finding them. Saving Money on Cockapoo Care The best way to save money on cockapoo expenses is to perform most of the care yourself. For instance, professional groomers can be quite costly. If you regularly brush your cockapoo and work hard to maintain his skin and coat health, you can save significantly on grooming costs. Likewise, keeping your dog healthy through good food and exercise is a great way to prevent medical complications. Conclusion A cockapoo is an investment. One-time purchases can be expensive, such as buying your dog from the breeder or having him neutered, but they are not the only costs you will need to account for. Although pets can be expensive, they are worth so much more than their price tag. They provide us with companionship, warmth, and fond memories that will last a lifetime. No one can put a price on that kind of reward. Less - The Cockapoo is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Ask the breeder you contact which type of Cockapoo they are breeding. Cockapoos have become popular because they generally combine the outgoing, loving personality of the Cocker Spaniel with the low-shedding , low-dander qualities of the Poodle. Cockapoos are active, and thrive when they receive regular exercise. Cockapoos can be very agile, excelling at "retrieve" games and enjoying activities such as swimming. Cockapoos are frequently very needy dogs and as such are not suitable to be left alone for long periods as they frequently suffer from separation distress or anxiety. The Cockapoo is a cross-breed, not a purebred, and does not "breed true. Cockapoos, however, may inherit the characteristics of either or both their parent breeds. While some Cockapoos appear more similar to Cocker Spaniels, others will exhibit more Poodle traits, creating a variation in Cockapoo appearance and temperament. They have been known in the United States since the s. Due to their popularity, Cockapoos are one of the mixed breed dogs most susceptible to be bred by puppy farms or unscrupulous amateur breeders looking to maximize profit. Potential owners should carefully research where they are purchasing their puppy from in order not to support this industry. The breed is known by many names, including the Cockerpoo in the UK and Spoodle in Australia, and they make loving family pets and dedicated working dogs such as service or support dogs. You will need to think about the money spent on everything from food to potential vet bills. This guide will help you calculate how much a Cockapoo may cost you in , including some money-saving tips and tricks to help you enjoy your time with your new dog. Free There may be times when owners struggle to care for their Cockapoo for a range of different circumstances, and regrettably, they may be looking for a new home for them. Most of the time, rescuing a Cockapoo will be doing the owner a massive favor by ensuring their beloved pet goes to a good home, and you also get to add a new family member for free. Some owners may be advertising their dogs for free because they just want to get rid of them. Doing your research before you pick up the dog and asking about problems they may have is vital before you bring them into your family. Most of these pets come chipped, treated for worms and fleas, and vaccinated. The best way to find a Cockapoo in your area for adoption is to ring up local shelters and start your research there. Purchasing a Cockapoo rather than adopting one is personal for many reasons, including if you want a certain color of Cockapoo. Ultimately it is your choice, but knowing how to approach breeders and what questions to ask including seeing the parents and how they are treated , is an important step. Some things are more obvious, such as bowls for food and water, collars and harnesses, leashes, etc. Others are easily overlooked; items such as car harnesses, toothbrushes, ID tags, and even pet insurance can add up. Veterinary care and ongoing supplies Always take the cost of adding a Cockapoo puppy to your home seriously. Providing proper care for your puppy is very important. Vaccinations, proper nutrition, medical care, license, and registration, cannot be avoided. Having a realistic estimate of the costs that a Cockapoo puppy will come with is an important part of preparing to add one of these loving dogs to your family. What is a Cockapoo? A Cockapoo, also sometimes called a Cockadoodle, is the result of a mixing of two dog breeds. The Cockapoo has been around in the United States since the s and there are multiple groups working towards developing them into a recognized breed. Cockapoos come in a wide range of colors and coat patterns, including black, chocolate, tan, white, cream, champagne, and even merle or tri-color! Taking the good sides of their parentage, Cockapoos are known to be intelligent, easy going, friendly, and highly trainable dogs. The Cockapoo price tends to just cover costs. This is because a good breeder puts the priority on the care and health of both the puppies and their parents! Depending on the breed and if there are any complications of pregnancy or birth, a single puppy can easily rack up several hundred to thousands of dollars in costs! Cost of a Puppy from Breeders Cockapoo price can vary greatly from breeder to breeder. This exact price will change depending on the breeder, and even the individual dog! The range in price can be due to rare coat colors, the health history, genetics, and bloodlines of the parents, and the age of the puppy. A quality breeder who cares about the health and well being of their animals invests thousands of dollars into each puppy. This Cockapoo price tag begins before the pups are even born! The costs for the parent dogs include care, quality nutrition, and medical screening for disease and genetic disorders. While you very well may find Cockapoo puppies significantly cheaper from smaller breeders or even pet shops, please take into consideration a few things. Puppy farms come in all shapes and sizes, but they all treat dogs as commodities for making profit. Puppy mill puppies rarely have quality if any, medical care. This makes them significantly more prone to genetic disorders, physical disease, and mental and emotional issues. Look at the cleanliness and care of not just the dogs, but all animals on site. Some red flags for puppy mills are if the breeder is willing to give you the puppy at a very young age, have multiple litters going at all times, or refuse to let you see the facility. Occasionally older may also have some medical or behavioral issues, but the breeder should be transparent and honest with you about it. The Cost of Vaccines and Booster Shots All puppies require a few rounds of vaccinations and booster shots. Also, medication for intestinal parasites and heartworm are typically included. This is not including any additional fees or charges from your veterinarian. Some jabs, like rabies, are legally required by your city or state. Many apartment communities or rental properties also require proof of up to date rabies vaccination for your pets. Licensing and Microchipping Your Dog This is a legal requirement in many cities and states, as it helps the city keep track of the animal population, along with helping ensure your dog can be returned to you if ever lost. Additionally, microchipping your pet is a popular and effective way to ensure your dog will make it home safely if anything should happen. The microchip is a small radio chip encased in glass and is about the size of a grain of rice. Check out this article going over the basic supplies and equipment that dogs need in their new homes. This means proper bedding, toys, grooming supplies, to an appropriate collar and leash. If you decide to invest in some larger equipment like a quality crate, doggy gates, or premium food and treats, this price range will obviously go a bit higher. There are a few factors that can add to the price of a Cockapoo. Some even go a step further to have the puppy chipped. Health does play a role as to how expensive or inexpensive a puppy is. Overall Health — A puppy that requires a lot of medication and vet visits, for example, maybe pricier than a healthy puppy. This is because the breeder had to spend a good amount of money to bring them back to good health. To make back of that financial loss, the price is larger. However, puppies who are unhealthy and remain that way may be cheaper. Instead of choosing to take care of the puppy themselves, the breeder chooses to let the new owners handle the vet costs of taking care of the puppy. Coat Type — Another factor that can influence the price is the type of coat the puppy has. There are rare patterns and colors that can emerge through a crossing. These rarer coat traits can sometimes add hundreds of dollars to the asking price for the Cockapoo. Blue coats, for example, are rare coat colors for Cockapoos. Should a breeder manage to have a blue-coated Cockapoo, then the price will likely be higher. The most common kinds of coats are white, black, and brown. Rare Patterns — Coats with rare patterns might also increase the price. These can be cheaper than those who manage to have a pattern in their coat. The more intricate the pattern is, the higher the price of the Cockapoo. Genetics and Bloodline— Genetics also plays a role in the price. Cockapoos with good genetics can be pricier than others. It can sometimes be more expensive to buy a Cockapoo that comes from two Cockapooparents than it is to buy a Cockapoo from a Poodle and an American Cocker Spaniel cross. Champion Bred — This also goes hand-in-hand if the Cockapoo has a champion lineage. Somewhere in their parental history, a dog was awarded a championship. Because many owners enjoy the prestige of owning a dog with a champion bloodline, breeders can charge extra. Breeders Personal Discretion — Finally, the cost is sometimes just determined by the breeder. Those who have been breeding Cockapoos successfully for several years may charge more. This is because they have a good reputation in the community and have an excellent track record. How to Find a Quality Cockapoo Breeder For those who want to find a quality Cockapoo breeder who takes care of their puppies, you can begin online. However, with any breeder that you find online, you should take a few moments to perform research about them. Did they have a glowing review? Or was the breeder difficult to work with? You can also ask around your local pet community. You might discover that someone sells Cockapoos right there in your own neighborhood. Going to a few dog parks, dog shows, and local dog competitions can place you in with the right crowd to ask advice from. Can I Adopt A Cockapoo? While many families love buying puppies, there are actually a lot of older Cockapoos who need homes, too. Families who found themselves either financially or emotionally unable to raise and house a Cockapoo place them up for adoption. These dogs come in an array of ages, temperaments, and behaviors. Some of them may be troubled and are especially in need of a loving home. You can look on sites like: AdoptAPet Cockapoo. Rescue organizations and adoption agencies are eager to find the perfect home for their dogs. The prices may be cheaper but they usually have standards for the kinds of homes that these dogs are entering. Older dogs in the rescues and adoption centers are also cheaper. Because most families want puppies, these older dogs are left behind. For those who want to save money but still have a loving Cockapoo in their home, then you might want to consider buying an older Cockapoo. To counteract that lack of knowledge, the price for adoption is cheaper. Finally, one last place to consider looking for Cockapoos that need to be adopted is at your own local Humane Society. They have a lot of dogs that they have rescued from the streets or troubled homes. You may just find that they have gathered a few Cockapoos, too. These dogs are also typically neutered or spayed. Related Questions What health problems can a Cockapoo have? Cataracts can plague older Cockapoos due to their American Cocker Spaniel heritage. Whereas they might experience hip dysplasia due to their Poodle side. If your dog comes from a champion bloodline, it means that at some point somewhere in their lineage, one of their parents or grandparents or great grandparents were championed. This could have occurred at a dog show or another dog competition in which being crowned a champion was the end result. Dogs from these lineages are coveted. Related Posts:. These super cute Cocker Spaniel-Poodle mixes capture the heart of everybody who comes into contact with them. However, owning a dog is a massive commitment, not just in terms of time but also money. Well, alongside the initial payment, with the Cockapoo price you will need to factor in ongoing as well as one-off expenses. Factors that Determine Cockapoo Price Doodles are designer dogs, and for that reason, if no other, prices can be pretty high. This actually makes them fairly reasonably priced compared to some of the other Doodle types. The exact amount you end up shelling out, though, will vary depending on a number of factors, particularly the ones outlined below: Genetic Guarantees Reputable breeders take great pride in the fact that their puppies come from healthy animals. To determine this, the dogs are carefully tested to ensure they are free from any kinds of heritable disease or conditions that they could potentially pass on to their offspring. Breeders also take a significant risk by offering potential buyers health guarantees. These are often for up to two years. They basically promise financial reimbursement if any genetic conditions do arise in the dogs within that time. However, the location of the operation could really impact the cost. Cockapoos are more expensive in parts of the country where there are fewer breeders or where these darling dogs are more in demand — or both. Plus, the cost of raising litters is obviously higher in some places than in others, and this will be factored into the price too. Breeder Stock High-quality breeders are likely to want to have the best of the best for their breeding animals. They will also need to be AKC or CKC registered and thoroughly screened for genetic defects on top of that — all added costs. Usually, breeders include a neutering clause in the purchasing agreement to help avoid the unplanned and irresponsible breeding of these dogs. Pups being sold for breeding often commandeer a much higher price tag than those that will simply be family pets. Demand Supply and demand is king, even when it comes to animals. While Cockapoos are not pedigree dogs, they are still super popular. In fact, such Doods are likely to be even more in demand than many breeds due to their Poodle intelligence, low shed coat, and unique teddy bear good looks. The fact that these Doodles are on the smaller side also works in their favor in the popularity stakes. In these areas, facilities can pretty much pick their price. After all, while many breeders aim for best practices when it comes to protecting the health of their dogs, breeding is still a for-profit business. While these pups are not completely no shed no dogs are , the Poodle genes do mean that these dogs often shed very little. However, that obviously is reliant on them inheriting a Poodle coat, which is not always the case. Certain generations stand a better chance simply because they have more Poodle in them. For this reason, these dogs are usually a little pricier. Generally speaking, the more colors the pup has, or the rarer their markings, the more expensive they will be. Unique Doods such as merles are incredibly in demand, and breeders take advantage of this — why would they not? Size can also have an impact on price. Like most other Doodles, Cockapoos come in different sizes depending on the Poodle used in the mix. In fact, these dogs have a few more variations than other Doodles — which is a little surprising given that Cockers are the smallest of the sporting dogs. Cockapoos are available in Maxi, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup. Usually, the smaller the dog, the bigger the price, as these ones tend to be the most popular. See Also: Click the image Breeder Reputation Long-standing facilities that have plenty of reviews for their happy, healthy hounds are also likely to charge more than those that are still establishing themselves. They have the credentials and experience to do this. Plus, if they are working with dogs that they themselves bred, then they can guarantee a high level of quality as they can be more sure of healthy bloodlines. Beyond this, more established breeders tend to offer services above and beyond the basics. This can include things like puppy training toilet, leash, crate and early socialization. They may even provide microchipping, send goodies out with their puppies or offer buyers lifetime support service for their Doods. All of these can make your experience as a buyer and new puppy parent that much easier. Different Types of Cockapoo Breeders and How Price Varies However, the thing that will have the most considerable effect on the cost of your Cockapoo is the kind of breeder you get them from. They are not all as official, nor sadly as ethical or on-the-level as one another. These are the three main types: Professional Breeders These breeders invest a great deal of money in their dogs, including genetic tests, nutrition, facilities for them, and more. This is reflected in the quality of the puppies they produce. However, you can be sure that you are getting a high-quality, nicely-bred, well-taken-care-of dog. See Also: Click the image Backyard Breeders Some people may choose to breed their pets to make a little extra income on the side. Any initial savings here will likely be negated in vet bills in the long run. Puppy Mills Puppy Mills or puppy farms are really not good places to pick up a pet. The dogs kept here are treated simply as commodities. They get cheap food, are poorly treated, and rarely receive any kind of vet care while they are there. This means that they are likely to suffer from physical and behavioral problems. Cockapoo Costs of Ownership When people think about the cost of a dog, they tend to only consider the amount they will pay for them. If you scrimp here, you could have all kinds of problems later on. Feeding a smaller dog like the Cocka will obviously be cheaper than maintaining a larger one. We recommend these brands for Cockapoos based on their specific nutritional needs. Related Content.

Here are some tips to help your puppy get comfortable in their new home. Let your puppy make decisions When you get to your house, set them at your open front door and let them choose to walk inside. Let them explore their new home on their own terms. Letting them make decisions can give them a sense of confidence, hope, and control, and ease into their new home. Limit visitors Now is the time to build the bond with your puppy and let them get to know you, not overstimulate them with a lot of people. Limit their access to your home Getting used to a new home with two rooms will be a lot easier than getting used to a new home with five rooms. Only let your puppy have access to a few rooms so that they get acclimated to their new area quicker, then as they get more comfortable you can allow them to explore new areas of the house. You can use baby gates to restrict access to sections of the house. Bonus benefit: this will also decrease the chances that they leave you a present in the guest room. In general, just keep things low key when you bring them home and let them get used to their surroundings. Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy Training your golden retriever puppy is one of the best things you can do both for them and with them. They have short attention spans and like to have fun, so short training sessions and training games work best. A lot of people think that training is just obedience training, like sit and stay , but it also includes life skills like crate training , potty training , how to not jump on people or bite them, and how to not pull on the leash. Socialization Socialization is something that is not talked about as much as it should be. It can help mitigate fear and aggression and help them become confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. You can socialize your puppy with other dogs by setting up play dates with gentle dogs that you know are vaccinated and by going to puppy kindergarten. Dog to other living beings includes humans, cats, and other animals. You can socialize them with other people by taking them to a pet-friendly store like home depot, and you can socialize them to other animals by taking a walk by the neighborhood cat with lots of distance between them, so neither animal gets overwhelmed. Dog to stuff is the broadest category, but no less important. When Oliver was very young we were on a walk and a FedEx truck drove by. He had never heard a big truck like that and was terrified. So make sure that your puppy is comfortable with trucks, cars, the garage door, buses, umbrellas, and whatever other objects they may encounter. For instance, if you live in Chicago, get them used to trains, buses and crowded streets. Every day, separate out five special treats for your puppy. For example, you might let your neighbor give your puppy a treat, or maybe you take your puppy to a bus stop and when the bus goes by you give them a treat, or maybe you introduce them to a cow and give them a treat. The treat helps them have a positive experience with these new things and people, plus it helps you easily remember to expose them to lots of these new things. Do this for the first four weeks of their life and before you know it, your puppy will have been exposed to new dogs, people, things, or environments, and will be well on their well to becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. Puppy Raising Mistakes Below are some mistakes that new puppy owners make that could make it harder to train and raise their puppy into a happy, confident adult. Not remembering how young they are Puppies are like little toddlers. Waiting to train your puppy until they have a problem Training your puppy before they have any behavior problems will make life so much easier for you. Forcing things too quickly Things like crate training and potty training take time. Setbacks hurt more than stretching their limits will help, so be patient and take things slowly. Conclusion Golden retriever puppies might just be the best living beings on the planet. However, they are a lot of work and can be quite naughty sometimes. How do you know if the Golden Retriever is the right fit for you and your family? A Brief Background on Golden Retrievers! Bred in the highlands of Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth in the mid to late s, Goldens are a cross between a Yellow Retriever and an extinct dog breed, the Tweed Water Spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth wanted the ideal gundog to accompany him during fowl hunting and be able to withstand the rugged terrain and rainy conditions. Aside from being able to retrieve fowl, Lord Tweedmouth wanted an even-tempered dog to have at home when not hunting. And so, the Golden Retriever was born. My husband and I are bringing home our first puppy in September a goldendoodle and this was super helpful! Emily June 29, , am Thank you so much for this, Jen! I look forward to the post on favorite dog toys! We just got a puppy and, while its only been a week, we are definitely having some issues getting puppy to embrace his crate. He is doing really well with potty training, and has yet to have an accident in his crate, but soon after he enters his crate the howling begins. This way he associates it with a positive place. Also, leave treats in there. Some dogs do better with their crates covered so like drape a blanket over the sides so it feels more like a cave. You might also try placing a t-shirt or something that smells like you in there. Also, leave the door open all the time and praise him if he goes in on his own. Good luck! OH, what a difference! Long after they no longer needed their crates, we kept them and always left the door opened. They would go into them when they were tired, knowing they were in a safe place; their place. Friends always said to us that they would have a dog if it behaved like our dogs. Be consistent. Fun for all of you. I can definitely see how teaching while a puppy can make a huge difference. Looking forward to your next dog related posts :. Reply Link Megan June 29, , pm Ahh thank you for this post! My husband and I are looking into getting a pug puppy soon and these tips are so helpful. Looking forward to reading more posts on this, especially the crate training. Love the tips, we are still trying to stay the course with the UD group classes! Golden are the best! It has been such an eye-opening month with our new puppy. Our other dog is 8 so everything feels brand new. I actually wrote about it in my post for tomorrow, but a puppy is like a baby. My boyfriend and I are getting a golden pup in the fall and while I grew up with the breed I have never trained a pup on my own. We made the choice to get a puppy mostly to instil good habits and behaviour long term. So long story short, I would never put a puppy or young dog or any age in airplane cargo! Reply Link Megan June 30, , pm Good tips! Socializing him right away and crate training him were so key to having an awesome, well-adjusted dog! Reply Link Josi August 20, , pm Hello! Just wondering where you got your goldens? This really helped me figure out what to do when she gets here. Jen May 3, , pm YAY! Our 3rd Golden in about 33 years and know he has some big paws to fill Taegan was wonderful for 14 years. We are so excited!! I have a new English Cream Golden. I feel like I need to work for his affection. Great otherwise! Not super energetic. Bursts of energy followed up by lots of naps but never really interested in walks. First timer here. Your pup could really benefit from basic positive obedience! I would recommend seeking out an experienced trainer in your area to help you as your pup grows! Having a puppy in the home can be fantastic, but you also need to make sure that you can offer it the best as well. She has been really easy to house break. We are excited to bring her home. Thank you for the helpful tips. That is a good idea to make sure that we are committed to doing the work to train this dog. We do really want him to be well trained. Thanks for the tips! Thank you so much for this super informative post! Reply Link Jen January 22, , pm I always made sure she went before we got to the gym and walked her frequently. Meghan January 29, , am Thank you so much for the reply!! We kept each of our puppies on a leash in the house, never out of our sight except when they were in the crate for 4 months before we gradually gave them independence. We always messed with them and held them. They had accidents as you would expect until fully house trained at about 4 months, but never any destructive or aggressive behavior. We gave them plenty of tough chew toys. Also training classes. They were never nervous or skittish. They love to lay on us and never have had any trouble with grooming, food guarding, loud noises, children or other animals. Goldens are great dogs but like any dog, they can only know what you teach them. Great article!! Kathrinne May 5, , am Hi Jen, how old are your puppies when you let them go out? Jen May 5, , am What do you mean? Reply Link Carly September 8, , pm Thank you so much for your article! What would your input be? Do you think they would focus on each other more than their humans? Would 2 puppies be so much more difficult than 1? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Love the name Zoey!! Any tips to Prevent that?? Reply Link Christine November 1, , am About to get golden 3. Learning all over about everything. Reply Link Jen November 1, , pm It is like starting over again but you will figure it out! Every pup is different but be patient and consistent! This is my first large dog breed so a little nervous. I read your post and you give wonderful tips that I will follow. Please let me know if it is safe to put a flea collar on the puppy. Thank you. Reply Link Jen January 29, , pm I would consult with your vet to see what they recommend for flea prevention and treatment. Also, about the scratching. It could be due to something else like an allergen outside. I have not had a dog in 3 years because I lost my last one in a painful way for me and I am afraid to get another one. I am now ready to get one and this page has helped me prepare for my new puppy. I am a 74 yr old male in pretty good shape no health issues, and retired so I should be around a while to look after a dog. My wife passed about four months ago so I guess I am looking to fill a void. I live in a single family home and have plenty of time to spare. Thanks Reply Link marion duffield April 14, , am I am picking my pup up in 2 weeks! This is the best AND most realistic article I have read about training…. My pup Tank will be 4 months when we get him. He is absolutely adorable. Have only seen photos. He lives with his breeder in Missouri and we live in Canada…. I am so excited for you!!!! Puppies are intense but so much fun. And wow, that is going to be an adventure! Reply Link Theresa April 30, , am Do you have suggestions about golden retriever puppy biting? We got ours at 7 weeks. She is now .How do we stop her from snapping and biting? She is smart and loving. The biting has been rough though. Can you help? But I love dogs soooo much. This info is everything to me. I love this post Soo much. Thanks a ton. You left puppy in car? Or what? Reply Link Madeline October 31, , pm I am picking up my 7 week old golden in 2 days! I am so excited! How did you go out taking him places before he had his full shots? I want to socialize him, and of course potty train him immediately, but obviously there are risks. Whats your take on this? So the whole crate training thing is not going so well. She hates it. Emily Camalo April 2, , pm Hi! Really appreciate you sharing all of this advice! It was super valuable. Reply Link Julie April 11, , am Loved your comments. I have a 9 week double doodle. I have crate trained since day 1 and she has been really good, day 1 upset for a couple of minutes. Day 2 no problem at all. Now just the occasional cry when I leave her but that is over with in a very short space of time. I also leave a low radio on for her. She uses the garden most of the time for toileting, but occasionally she will come into the house and do another wee. The problem I have at the moment is trying to stop her biting. I have tried the gentle command which she listens to some of the time. And I have tried standing and turning my back on her so she realises I am not playing when she bites, but she will then go for trousers or feet, which I try my best to ignore, or she will just go off and do something else like chew a mat or something which is a no no. Any ideas? Regards Reply Link Stephanie January 25, , am Really great info, thank you for your article. Our puppy arrives in 5 days and we have been preparing for months. Your advice is. Very helpful. Blessings to you.
Use tab to navigate through the menu items. My name is Taylor McCuiston and writing about myself is definitely harder than writing about my dogs or telling you about them. I have always been an animal lover and have raised many young animals from goats kids , foals, kittens, puppies, you name it we had it on the farm to take care of. To pinpoint exactly when I fell in love with the breed, I can't tell you. All I dreamed of having was my own German Shepherd Dog. In our psychology class we had to make our own vision board of what we wanted our future to look like. Well, my vision board had a beautiful dark black and tan German Shepherd dead center of this poster board. The rest of the board was filled with big trucks, horses, and big barns. Needless to say, shortly thereafter I did my research and made sure this breed would fit my lifestyle and after finding the right breeder, I bought my first GSD from a reputable breeder. Saba Lee traveled everywhere with me while I worked as a professional horse trainer showing all across the United States. She not only was my co-pilot, best friend, but she was also my protector. The unconditional love this dog gave me and some of my happiest memories I will never forget. My goal as a breeder is to provide that same experience, I had to my puppy buyers. I chose this breed not just based off of their physical appearance, but when I read the breed standard, it was exactly what I was looking for in a companion dog. Saba ignited a fire and from there I decided I wanted to start breeding German Shepherds, but I wanted to do it the right and ethical way. I essentially did an internship with another breeder and learned the do's and don'ts of dog breeding. I purchased my first breeding dog and her name was "Starburst". Star has left a legacy not only through her amazing puppies, but she was known as a perfect performer in the obedience ring. We had a total of eight titles before her official retirement. She went on to produce dogs who have won and titled in AKC conformation, obedience, service, and therapy dog work. She is my foundation dog and has stamped not only her beautiful looks, but has passed on her amazing temperament to her puppies. Star 3 years old. Vega Star daughter Birdie Star granddaughter I continue to strive for breeding better dogs. Each pairing is carefully selected and evaluated based on what we're looking to produce. We are not looking to just produce dogs; we're preserving a breed! Each one of our puppies is carefully placed and if you have one of our pups consider yourself a part of the Fame Family! We are a small hobby breeder located in the Florida Keys. We have raised working line German Shepherds since .My love for the dogs and animals in general started when I was very young. When I was thirteen years old I got my first German Shepherd dog, my passion has grown tremendously ever since! We take pride in the quality of our puppies and dogs. We continually strive to produce high quality dogs, with excellent bone type, temperament, health and workability. Our dogs are family first and foremost. They are not kennel dogs, they do not live outside or in a kennel setting. They live indoors with us and are a huge part of of daily lives. We spoil our dogs, plain and simple.! They spent a lot of time swimming in the ocean, running and playing on the sand bar. They also love exploring the "backcountry" of the Florida Keys. They live very happy and healthy lives. Our puppies produced here at Key Star are very loved and well cared for and we strive to provide the very best for them. Each puppy is handled daily, ensuring that they will have excellent temperament that will adjust nicely with their new family. Our breeding program is our hobby and our passion, along with training. It is our opinion that German shepherds are the most intelligent, faithful, noble, and above all, loyal dogs you will ever own! They are not just any breed. There are a lot of intelligent dogs and a lot of athletic dogs, but the uniqueness of the German shepherd is that they sum up the best qualities of all working dogs into one breed. This is why they are used worldwide by both military, private security, and police. Those who are fearful of this breed don't understand its purpose, its relationship to its owners, and its potential and willingness to want to please and offer its life for its owners. We have had many dogs that have been wonderful, intelligent pets, but none of them compare to the intelligence, loyalty, and intuitiveness that the German shepherd dog just has naturally. All of our straight-back German shepherd puppies , purebred German shepherd puppies , and German shepherd puppies are delivered and hand raised in our home by our family. Each puppy receives individual love and attention and is exposed to children, other animals, and different environments, weather permitting. They get exposed to different terrain when we take them on field trips or little outings when they are old enough. Our dog breeder s closely watch each puppy from the moment it is born. We watch how they interact with siblings, other animals in different environments and how they respond to different noises, toys, when left alone, etc. We want to make sure each puppy is matched up with the best home. For example, we don't want to give a first-time GSD owner a very high-energy, highly driven puppy that they won't be able to manage when it is 6 months of age. We want to find the right and best puppy for you! Our dogs are a part of our family and treated as such. They are not kept in kennels! There is a place for kennels, but it is our personal opinion that a home-raised puppy is a happy puppy. We keep them indoors as the weather requires or let them run outside where they cool off in one of their tanks or go swimming in their pond. Our dogs are known for their good temperaments and are good with children while at the same time being naturally protective. We have one that has become a K-9 narcotics detection dog and one in training to be a therapy dog. But most of our pups have just gone on to become family companions and guardians in wonderful loving homes to regular everyday people. We do our best in breeding purebred German shepherds to match up dogs that will bring out the best qualities in each other. They balance out each other's weaknesses and bring out each other's strengths. Our goal is to produce a beautiful, healthy, strong dog that far surpasses the norm in intelligence, one that has natural intuition, a dog that is emotionally balanced and stable, that you can feel safe with your children or other children around. We look to breed big, beautiful, and majestic dogs with a strong solid frame and straight back, much like the original German shepherds had. But, we also want to breed one that you feel confident will do its job and protect you and your loved ones if it comes down to it! We do not want to take away from what the German shepherd truly was meant to be! We breed many types of German shepherds, including black and tan German shepherds, black and red, solid black, bi-color, long coats, short coats, plush coats as well as sable German shepherds. It is important for us that if you choose one of our puppies, it is going to be a "forever" home, and we do our best to match you with the right puppy for your home. Learn More Labrador Retriever is a quite famous breed, topping the list of great family dogs due to their friendly and social personality. Now, what colors come to your mind when you think of the Labradors? Black, yellow, and chocolate. Silver Labrador Retriever is a beautiful color variation of traditional Labradors; because of the presence of a dilute gene. Their distinct coat color has caught the attention of many; however, not without some controversy. About the Breed Silver Labrador Retrievers are one of the rarest shades of labradors. They are a hyperactive breed with a compelling sporting nature. They respond well to training, enjoy exploring nature with you, love playing water sports, and are fond of the fetch game, making them perfect for active families. These beautiful dogs are well-known for befriending every creature they see without any degree of communication. They love being the center of attention and thrive on social interaction. A little clingy at times, but they deserve all that for their service just existing. Their agreeable personality and intelligence make them one of the most charming breeds. However, according to the breed standard set by Labrador Retriever Club, true labradors are yellow, black, and chocolate in color. Many breeders believe that the other colors are due to cross-breeding Labradors with Weimaraners. They were created in Newfoundland and were first introduced by the European to Britain settlers via the ships trading between Canada and Poole. Labs were initially bred for duck retrieving, assisting in fishing adventures, and as a hunting dog. But with time, their popularity grew more as household pets, and to this date, especially in the western world. They first started appearing, according to some sources, in , while others believe it was in the s. Now, it is clear that their distinct coat colors are due to the presence of the recessive dilute gene pair that has recently appeared in the Labrador gene pool. The source of that dilute gene is what makes their exact origin vague. This is why the profile of Silver Labs remains controversial for the most part. Silver Labrador Facts Silver Labradors have blue eyes as puppies. They are more prone to developing skin problems such as Color Dilution Alopecia than other Labradors. They are outgoing and social. They also tend to chewupon objects due to anxiety. The Silver Lab is an active breed, just like the black and yellow labs. In order to keep them away from destructive behaviors, they need to stay stimulated mentally and physically. They can be a little prone to nipping, so they do require a lot of your attention. Plus, if you enjoy outdoor adventures like hiking, then Silver Lab will prove to be an extraordinary companion to you. Due to being double-coated, they shed a fair amount of hair, especially the Silver Labrador, because of skin problems. Grooming Requirements Brushing As we mentioned above, labs shed quite a bit. And by this, we mean you will be able to collect an adequate amount of hair from all over the house, especially during peak season. Using coconut oil at least once a month can keep their coat neat, shiny, and soft. Gently massage the oil for about five minutes and then clean it with a towel. Bathing Bathing your Labrador Retriever once a month is adequate. Use lukewarm water and mild shampoo; it will keep their skin maintained. However, if you start noticing scratching of nails against the floor while running, walking, or jumping around, trim their nails immediately. Ear Cleaning Their adorable floppy ears need to be checked and cleaned frequently to prevent any potential infection. Always include ear cleaning in their grooming session. Health Complications in Silver Labrador Every breed is likely to face minor or major health complications. And we have listed all the possible health conditions your Labrador Breed could suffer from. When getting a Silver Labrador, always look for a reputable breeder. Life Expectancy Silver Labrador dogs typically have a lifespan between 10 to 14 years. It can vary from dog to dog based on health issues, environment, and other factors. It occurs due to the presence of a recessive gene. In this condition, your dog suffers from skin problems, including hair loss or thinning in the form of patches, itchiness, scaliness, or flaky skin. Vets give treatments to tackle secondary skin infections. Avoid using brushes with harsh bristles. The deficiency of type II muscle fibers causes muscle weakness, resulting in symptoms like stunted growth, trouble swallowing, stiff arched back, shrunken muscles, and low tolerance to exercise. They progressively get worse and are the most prominent in 5 months old puppy. Sadly, most puppies with CNM are subjected to euthanization due to their inability to function normally in life. No dog owner should ever have to go through this painful experience. This developmental issue in both joints causes difficulty or friction in climbing stairs, jumping, running, and even walking. Exercise Induced Collapse Labradors and their unending love for playing and exercise is not something hidden; their energy drive is high. EIC refers to the recessive autosomal inherited trait. Your Labrador Retriever, despite feeling weak, will still try to be active. Then after five to ten minutes, they collapse. Extreme exercise sessions are to be avoided in dogs with this condition. This results in excessive discharge from ears, inflammation, itching, foul odor, and head shaking. Otitis Externais one of the most common ear infections in Silver Labradors, characterized by ear canal inflammation. Ear infections are unpleasant and painful and cause discomfort for your dogs. Consult a local veterinarian right away if you notice any of the above symptoms. Over Eating Labrador Retrievers are quite popular for being foodies. Some scientists associate it with a genetic mutation. Sometimes, overeating might also indicate an underlying serious health issue like hypothyroidism. Silver Labrador Diet and Nutrition Your high-energy Labrador Retriever needs a high-quality, nutritious, and protein-rich diet to function healthily. The amount of dog food you feed them may vary a little with their size and weight. For example, your Silver Lab of 50 pounds will need about 2 and a half cups of good quality dog food daily. The calorie requirement for an pound Silver Labrador is a little higher; they will need about 3 and a half cups of dog food to fulfill their 1, calorie requirement each day. Consider getting dog food that has adequate calcium for better joint development. And remember, it is always best to divide the meals into 3 to 4 intervals for better digestion. These greedy creatures tend to unleash their inner ever-hungry beast at the sight of food, which causes bloating. In order to keep them physically and mentally stimulated, 60 minutes of exercise every day is essential. And if your Lab is super active, make it 1. Labs love playing fetch, running, going on fast-paced walking, and being goofy. Thus, their exercise session can include any activity; just make sure they get enough exercise every day! Dedicate one hour of your time daily to your dog, and give them all your attention and love. Apart from playing and exercising, you can keep them busy by getting them interactive and stimulating toys. Those toys also help them in providing comfort when you leave them alone for a while. They are a highly intelligent breed and can be easily trained. They are a welcome addition to most families. Positive reinforcements work well with them; their love for food makes it easier to lure them into doing literally anything you want. All you need is a favorite treat, toy, or any complimentary food, and boom; your Lab becomes the most obedient boy in the world. As puppies, they are easier to control and manage, while the adult Labs are larger in size and can be a little stubborn. choosing a german shepherd puppy - Three to four times a day 4 — 5 months 6 months and above Two times a day Pregnant or breastfeeding French Bulldogs may eat up to three times a day within eight hours. Meanwhile, puppies require more frequent feedings than adult dogs due to their rapid metabolism. In general, a French Bulldog puppy should be fed three times daily between two and six months. Once the French Bulldog puppy reaches the age of six months, the feeding frequency can be reduced to two meals each day. As developing puppies, your Frenchie requires a consistent daily feeding plan. The feeding plan should incorporate at least three measured meals per day. Its dinner schedule is vital, as it allows ample time to digest the food and go pee or potty before bedtime. Between 14 and 18 weeks, you can begin accustoming your French Bulldog puppy to two meals each day. If your veterinarian advises you to keep your French Bulldog on a three-meals-a-day diet, this must be properly followed. Senior dogs can be fed on the same schedule when given three meals a day. Since elderly dogs do not move as much, they may develop too much weight. Consequently, you should ensure that the food contains fewer calories, more fiber, and an appropriate balance of fat and protein. Your veterinarian should have a recommended amount of treats you should give your dog. Again, it will vary according to its weight and level of activity. If you must frequently use treats for training, use tiny bits or give them a licking mat. Best Dog Foods for French Bulldog A feeding guide for Frenchie dog lovers would be incomplete without the information on the best dog food for their furry companion. There are numerous food options available for French Bulldogs. The best pet food varies from one Frenchie to another. Perhaps your French Bulldog is a fussy eater or suffers from food allergies. It is feasible to provide a balanced diet for your French Bulldogs if you use the best store-bought or homemade dog food that contains all the nutrition needed by your dog and as prescribed by your veterinarian. The list below shows the best dog food options you can provide your French Bulldog: Dry Food: Dry dog food is commercially available kibble. This can be an excellent alternative for French Bulldogs with sensitive stomachs. French Bulldog puppies require high-quality dry food that is high in animal protein to aid in growth and muscular development. Wet Food: Wet food is contained in a can; it is primarily composed of water and is considered highly mushy food. However, wet food expires more quickly than dry food, making it the least practical alternative. Home-Cooked Diet: A home-cooked, protein-rich diet like a chicken meal is excellent for French Bulldogs. Unlike ordinary kibble, it contains no additives or preservatives. It supports healthy digestion and may help avoid various problems related to a bad diet, including obesity, dry skin and coat, pancreatitis, diabetes, and a low immune system. French Bulldogs are prone to developing a variety of joint and back issues. Along with other joint problems, they may develop luxating patella or hip dysplasia. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are critical components of a high-quality French Bulldog dog diet. These essential vitamins assist your French in developing the connective tissue necessary for healthy joints and spine support. Omega-3 fatty acids can assist your Frenchie to keep muscle mass and strength by reducing inflammation and soreness. Also, this can promote healthy skin by preventing itchy and flaky skin. Whether wet and dry food, raw food, or a homemade diet, each dog food offers several benefits and drawbacks. Consult a veterinarian before deciding to know exactly what food option suits your Frenchie. Any French Bulldog owner will attest that vomiting is far more common in this breed than in other dogs. While it cannot be totally prevented, you should know what human foods are toxic to French Bulldogs. Some of the foods to avoid are not only bad for Frenchie; many of them can be fatal. They may result in poisoning and, in the worst-case scenario, death. This section enumerates some of the most dangerous foods for French Bulldogs. I will discuss why these foods are poisonous and when you should contact a veterinarian. The first and most prevalent is chocolate. It contains a toxin called theobromine , which can cause a variety of health problems when consumed in large amounts. This can cause irregular heartbeats, seizures, and sudden death. Garlic and onions should also never be included in the diet of your Frenchie puppy or adult dog. Even a trace of these vegetables can result in anemia and red blood cell failure in your pup. Poisoning symptoms include lethargy, fatigue, vomiting, rapid breathing, and an increased heart rate. However, remember that you may not immediately notice poisoning symptoms because the toxic consequences may take a few days to manifest. Additionally, grapes are one of the most toxic foods for your Frenchie. A dog that has consumed grapes may exhibit stomach bloating and diarrhea. They need to be taken to a veterinarian immediately. In severe cases, gastric lavage is the best course of action. Candy, artificial sweeteners, corn on the cob, roasted bones, avocado, raisins, almonds, cherry, peach, plum, coconut oil, mustard seeds, alcohol, coffee, blue cheese, and tomatoes are also regarded to be unsafe for French Bulldogs. Furthermore, there are certain foods that you should avoid giving your Pitbull owing to the negative side effects they may cause. While they are not considered dangerous, they can cause nausea, diarrhea, and weight gain. Numerous dogs wind up at veterinarian clinics due to improper food intake. While prevention is always the best course of action, it is critical to understand emergency care and medication expenses. Read our article on French Bulldog costs to learn more about the medical expenditures associated with a French Bulldog. These adjustments should ideally take place over 5 to 7 days. Consult a veterinarian in this scenario, especially if you intend to switch to a raw or homemade diet. Feeding an Overweight French Bulldog French Bulldogs can quickly gain weight, resulting in various health problems. Thus, dog owners need to notice when their Frenchie gets overweight to assist the dog in maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy life. Average adult French Bulldogs should have a body weight between 19 and 29 pounds for males, while 18 to 28 pounds for females. The most common indications that your Frenchie is overweight include lack of muscle definition and difficulty breathing during brief exercises. In terms of visual indicators, a Frenchie within their healthy weight will have a thin layer of fat covering their ribs. Meanwhile, those with excess fat have noticeable deposits in the chest and stomach area. Also, you should be able to see and feel their spine as they bend and curl into a sleeping position. Furthermore, Frenchies have an hourglass form, with a visible waistline that is smaller than their chest when they are not overweight. Regardless of these symptoms, it is always advisable to seek confirmation from a professional veterinarian. Feeding an obese Frenchie means maintaining a consistent food plan throughout the day to aid in weight loss. Additionally, this stops your dog from eating more than it requires. Apart from planned feeding times, serving the correct meal proportions is essential. If your Frenchie is overweight, owners should focus on how much food is offered to them. Reducing their daily kibble intake by half a cup can help them significantly reduce weight. Moreover, you should offer them foods with fewer calories, more fiber, and more protein. As a result, your Frenchie will burn more calories and lose weight more quickly. It is preferable to give your dog treats that contain only one ingredient, are low in calories, and contain no added sugar, such as sweet potato and blueberry bites. Alternatively, you can treat your dog with items that are already in your refrigerator, such as tiny portions of sweet potatoes, apples, and bananas. Regularly weigh your dog, monitor how many calories they intake, and establish a target body weight for them. Also, pain can make a Frenchie nervous and unable to eat, so keep an eye out for evident signs of injury. Another common reason for your French Bulldog not to eat is discomfort in the mouth caused by dental issues. Furthermore, gastrointestinal conditions, certain medicines, vaccination, overfeeding, or other serious health problems can cause a French Bulldog not to eat. As a result, you must keep an eye on your Frenchie and contact your veterinarian if the condition persists for weeks. Do French Bulldogs Eat a Lot? French Bulldogs are opportunistic feeders by nature. Thus, they will continue to eat as long as you provide pet food. They may begin to require more than is necessary to fulfill their appetite due to this behavior. Also, when a French Bulldog is agitated, it may begin to overeat. The most effective strategy to combat stress-related overeating is to thrive in a calm environment. At times, your dog may become bored and eat more than usual to keep itself occupied somehow. Thus, you must keep a watch on any of these factors. Can French Bulldogs Eat Bones? Dogs should not consume cooked bones of any kind. The bones may splinter, resulting in deadly shards that might cause injury due to choking hazards. Thus, if you wish to offer your Frenchie a bone, vets recommend raw meat bones, preferably from farm-raised chicken. These are best given after a meal to prevent them from eating too much. Remove it after around ten minutes and store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for tomorrow. To avoid bacterial contamination, it is recommended to discard it after a few days and keep it separate from other raw meat and food. Can French Bulldogs Be Vegetarians? Each Frenchie is one-of-a-kind. Simply because your French Bulldog likes veggies does not mean it can go full-on vegetarian. Also, bear in mind that many veggies are dangerous and toxic to your French Bulldog. Certain vegetables are acceptable to be fed to a French Bulldog, but only in small portions. Final Thoughts French Bulldogs are, without a doubt, playful, intelligent, and compassionate dogs. On the other hand, Frenchies are greedy eaters, and food serves as their primary motivator. Thus, a critical component of owning this breed is understanding how much, how frequently, and what food to feed a French Bulldog. You can supply dry food, wet food, raw food diets, or a homemade diet for your pet. Since Frenchie pups and adults may have food sensitivities, providing or making the best dog food for their age and nutritional requirements is critical. By doing so, you can help your Frenchie prevent undesirable health problems. This can help guarantee that your Frenchie receives the safest and healthiest diet as much as possible. Calories matter, but are hard to count As French bulldogs get older, you should try to feed them according to their weight. For every pound, they should be fed between 25 and 30 calories. However, for the rest of this French bulldog puppy feeding guide, I am just going to talk in cups. Puppy weight How can weigh your puppy at the vets or, and this is can be a more interesting and fun way if your puppy already knows how to sit, have them sit on a scale at home. It will not be as accurate as a scale at the vet, but it could be a cheap and fun experience for you and your pet. Because of this, your puppy may be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. Here is where the math gets a little more detailed, but not too complicated. When they are between 8 to 12 weeks old, the puppy should be fed about 1. This food should be high in calories since they need extra nutrients that they are no longer getting from their mother. This kind of follows the main rule when it comes to spreading out the meals to 3 times a day. But for younger pups, many owners will split the 1. Because feeding them 0. Once they are between 6 and 9 months old, they should be used to their eating routine. That is when the main rule is applied because by then, the pup will be maturing into its adult size and should weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. What about older dogs? Also, if you are wondering how much they should be fed once they start hitting their senior years, they should be fed a little less as long only if they are not as active. Make sure you still stretch out the meals to 3 to 4 times like when they were puppies because it is not uncommon for their stomachs to weaken with old age. Overweight or underweight? French bulldog puppies usually weight between 8. Once they reach 6 to 9 months, they are just at or are closer to reaching their adult weight, .If the puppy is underweight, then add very small increments to each meal every day until they are no longer underweight. It is important to not add too much food because of the possibility of them getting a twisted stomach. If the puppy is overweight, you can either slightly reduce the size of their meal until they lose weight, or you can give them more exercise. Many people prefer the later since it helps the pup to get stronger and adds more bonding time. The same methods apply to grown French bulldogs as well. Handy Hint: Read this guide which explains how to check if you have a fat French Bulldog who needs to lose weight, with tips on how to get the pounds down. If the dog does not appear to be gaining weight when they are underweight or vice versa if they are overweight, you might want to take them to the vet since it could be a sign that something is affecting their health. Health conditions Since not every animal is the same, ask your vet the next time your pup has a check-up what a French bulldog of their size and age should weigh. Health factors like diabetes yes, dogs can have diabetes , can make your pup need a more strict diet or feeding routine. Here are some different diets and feeding routines. Raw food vs. Many dog lovers say that there are too many preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and protein in dry and wet food. While the raw food diet can be more natural, especially if it is organic, you also have to make sure your pup would be getting more foods with vitamins and minerals mixed in with the raw food that your pup would need. Raw food diets can be more expensive, require more storage room for the meats and veggies, and take longer to prepare. However, you would be personally ensuring that your little French bulldog pup is getting their full daily nutrition without harmful by-products and additives. Is there a good dry food diet? Possibly the biggest questions out of all of them: is there any good dry dog food out there and how do I find them? The answer is yes, there can be some healthy dry dog food products, but it takes some time to look for. The key is to look for dog food that does not contain any preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and too much protein. Fillers basically do not provide any nutritional value and can even harm your dog since most of the ingredients they use as fillers are common allergies for dogs that can cause skin conditions, bowel issues, and more. Wheat and corn are included since they are also a popular allergen for dogs. Too much protein is even more dangerous for them since it can put more pressure on the organs, throw off nutritional balance, increase the likelihood of diabetes, and can harm dogs that already have diabetes. Another two meat choices would be duck and turkey, but these are a little less common to find, especially if you are looking for a French bulldog specific dog food. Your dog eats his food too quickly Another common problem is how do you control how fast your French bulldog puppy eats. French bulldogs love to eat their food and eat it fast, which is one of the primary causes of GDV. Frenchies will stop eating for a number of reasons, some more serious that others. We recommend trying a grain-free diet first as wheat and grain may cause excessive flatulence in this breed. Make sure to include lots of complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes rather than single grains, as these can be a problem for already health-problematical pups. Most importantly, be sure to feed your dog a well-balanced diet from a brand that you can trust. If your dog is overweight or underweight, use their ideal weight as your guide. We recommend that you break this advised portion into two feedings, every morning and evening. Try not to feed your Frenchie too late in the day though, in order to make room for a walk before bedtime. Make sure to feed your puppy three to four smaller meals a day so as not to overwhelm their tiny tummies. Their last meal should be around two or three hours before their last walk, to give them enough time to digest their food and avoid any house-training mishaps. Some dogs develop faster than others and may need to move onto adult dog food more quickly, but this is something you should discuss with your vet when the time comes. French Bulldog Allergies Just like their owners, dogs are equally susceptible to allergies. These can unfortunately be particularly difficult to diagnose, being both dietary and environmental. Symptoms include itching or watery eyes, sore patches on the skin, and incidents of diarrhoea or vomiting. To prevent allergic reactions, make sure to use only pet-friendly cleaning products in your home and be prepared to alter your dog's diet. Hypoallergenic dog foods are perfect for your French Bulldog as they've been specially formulated to counter dietary allergies. Also, try not to give your Frenchie too many table scraps — even some vegetables do more harm than good. French Bulldog Obesity French Bulldogs are not a highly-active breed, though they'll certainly eat like one if given the chance. It's your job to make sure that they stay adorably pump and don't gain too much weight. Your French Bulldog should have a solid structure supported by an athletic build. You should be able to feel its ribs, and your dog shouldn't have any breathing issues on a short walk unless it's a hot day in which case, take them inside. Overweight pups are more likely to develop severe heart problems and other health disorders, so it's important to keep your Frenchie on the right track. Following these suggestions to give your pup a high-quality, hypoallergenic diet will make certain to provide all the essential nutrients and vitamins. No matter what dog food you choose, be sure to introduce small amounts into their regular food a little at a time. We hope that this guide has helped you to make informed choices about how to feed your pup — remember, you can always contact us with any questions too! Happy feeding! We recommend talking to your vet for more information on puppy weight so that they can advise on food and nutrition. They should be in a safe place with little to no disturbance, especially during nursing time, to help keep them calm while getting their nourishment. By 3 weeks of age, your puppy should have at least twice the weight they had at birth. Also, during their third week, if your vet recommends it already, have your puppy dewormed to avoid onsets of digestive problems, sickness, and the like. One common mistake of most beginner breeders and pet owners is forgetting to deworm their little ones, but this is crucial since puppies can be prone to sickness. A French bulldog puppy that is 4 weeks of age can begin the solid food introduction. This makes them far earlier in terms of weaning as compared to other breeds. Try offering your puppy kibble portioned with water to make it easier to digest for them. You can also feed them with bits of raw food, as long as your vet agrees to it and if you prepared the raw food properly. However, kibble is the most standard way of feeding your French bulldog puppy, especially if you are on a limited budget and if you have a plethora of puppies to take care of. Just make sure to take your time into offering them, as weaning is not an instant process that happens overnight. Remove any uneaten food immediately after 20 minutes of not being touched to avoid spoilage or give to the other puppies. During the sixth week of your French bulldog puppy, they should somehow already eat solid food, even in little amounts, because it will help with their overall physical development. Consider serving high-quality food that is not made with too many filler ingredients. Look for French bulldog puppy food that is filled with a lot of protein to help them gain muscle mass and energy throughout the day. This is especially the case for puppies that are often active. Likewise, the 6th week is also the time when your puppy has their first milk teeth so they need comfort food. Ask your vet about whether your French bulldog puppy is ready to get vaccinations and other supplements by this time. You can choose the time of day that you want to feed them, but keep them spaced just fine to avoid bouts of hunger and overeating. Full raw feeding is also okay by this stage if your French bulldog puppy is fully weaned. Make sure that you calculate your raw food nutrients and calories carefully to avoid a lack of nutrition, or simply ask your vet or breeder about it. Puppies that are 8 weeks old will also need to be socialized more often. By doing this, you are training their body clock to eat at certain times. Some breeders already slowly transition from puppy to adult food during this time. Get advice from your vet as to when your pup should switch to adult formulas since it might disrupt their tummy and overall health. If you must feed them with treats due to training, make sure to include it in their list of calories consumed the entire day, and talk to your vet about it. Your vet could even offer treats that are low in calories but are healthy and tasty for your pup as an alternative. Recommended Food French bulldogs are known to be prone to diarrhea, skin problems, cherry eye, and hip dysplasia. Therefore, they will need a good amount of nutrients for their food during puppyhood. Glucosamine foods Glucosamine is a type of nutrient found in most chicken, fish, and seafood. You can also talk to your vet about glucosamine supplements although they might only recommend it when needed, such as due to genetic history of joint problems. Omega fatty acids Omega fatty acids come from fish oil, which can help improve their coat appearance and resist skin allergies. Generally, French bulldogs are known to be very sensitive when it comes to getting skin diseases so having omega fatty acids in their diet is a must. Your veterinarian might also recommend supplements to help improve their coat appearance. However, of course, a healthy coat and skin still largely depend on proper grooming habits, such as bathing, brushing, and clipping as needed. Quality meat sources Typical protein sources, such as fish, chicken, lamb, and beef, are a staple for most puppies — French bulldogs included. The trick is to look for a brand that has a certain animal as their first ingredient and not merely a random mixture of meat that you might find suspicious. Carrots Vitamin A is found in carrots, which can help lessen the likelihood of cherry eye and similar eye problems in your French bulldog when they get older. They mostly contain poisonous ingredients that are not suitable for French bulldogs and all canines, anyway. Keep in mind to stay away from these veggies and fruits as they are only for human consumption. Choking hazards Foods that are considered choking hazards for a French bulldog puppy include asparagus, avocadoes, and cherries. Asparagus is usually okay for French bulldogs, but if you need to feed it to them, make sure to cut them into very small pieces. Cooked bones are also quite tricky and usually not recommended for French bulldogs due to their threat of being a choking hazard. When the bones split after being cracked and chewed, they could injure your puppy — even when they turn into adults later on. Fillers like corn and wheat We did mention that French bulldog puppies have sensitive tummies, right? Look for high-quality content in your puppy food, such as little to no corn or wheat, and more of healthier carbohydrate sources, such as sweet potatoes, and meats like chicken, fish, beef, and turkey. FAQs on Feeding a French Bulldog Puppy If you want to know more about how to feed a French bulldog properly, here are some additional information on their feeding habits and other tips: How many calories are suitable for my French Bulldog puppy? The average calories for a French bulldog puppy should be around 12 calories per pound and you can increase that up to 30 if they are highly active. However, more factors will come into play, such as the type of food and their genetics. When should I switch my French bulldog puppy to adult food? We recommend waiting for your puppy to grow at least 1 year old for them to switch properly to adult food. A French bulldog should be switched from puppy to adult food gradually. Next, wait for a couple of meals and transition every few days by giving them more of the new food than the old formula. Eventually, after about a few weeks or so, your puppy should already eat only the new food. What this slow food adjustment does is eliminate the likelihood of stomach upsets. As we mentioned above, French bulldog puppies are prone to digestive issues, which is why you need to be mindful of what they eat. First, if your French bulldog puppy just moved in from an old breeder, they might feel uneasy and might not eat well. Be sure to make the change slowly to avoid ruining their digestive system. Feeding your puppy is all about trial and error because every pup has a different taste preference, after all, just like humans. It could be an underlying health problem that needs to be addressed. Raw feeding a French Bulldog puppy Raw feeding a French bulldog puppy is possible, as long as you get proper advice from your vet. It is quite a complicated process since it involves calculating the amount of protein and nutrients from organ meat, vegetables, fruits, supplements, and others. On the flip side, it is quite a daunting task to prepare raw food for them to ensure that everything is balanced in terms of nutrients. If food sanitation is a problem in your area and you live in highly-humid coastal areas, it will be more difficult for you to handle raw meat. Conclusion As a whole, French bulldogs are sensitive as puppies and adults. This is why feeding them properly is a must. French bulldogs, like other breeds, need specific nutrients and also a strict schedule to maintain their weight properly. We hope that this guide on feeding a French bulldog puppy helped you out in raising your companion to be a healthy and happy dog! We do not claim to be veterinarians. French Bulldogs can easily become overweight or underweight , especially the lazy ones. Some french bulldogs are hyperactive while others are couch potatoes. It is also critical that you maintain a consistent feeding schedule and never slack off on feeding your French Bulldog. Even more important than that is feeding your Frenchie the proper amount of food daily. Young Frenchies have high caloric and nutrient needs. French Bulldogs aged anywhere from weeks of age need a total of 1. Spreading out the meals minimizes the peaks of energy your French Bulldog will experience due to dramatic rises and decreases in blood sugar levels between meals. Feeding only twice daily can sometimes lead to gastric dilatation volvulus. By this stage, your French Bulldog is ready to get into an eating routine that they will continue on for the rest of their happy, little chubby lives, barring no serious medical ailments later on in life. From around 6 months to 1 year of age, you can start feeding your French Bulldog a very high quality adult doggy food. It is important to maintain a strict routine for your French Bulldog. You can always supplement a few treats in between. Wink wink. A half a cup at a time will make sure your Frenchie is pleasantly tubby and happy. Some days, it seems like a French Bulldog can never get enough food. This seemingly natural hunger is relative to the breed and you should be weary of overfeeding your French Bulldog. Monitor your Frenchie as she eats and make sure she only eats her own food, especially if you feed your French Bulldog near other pets. Note that non-neutered males may grow into the low 30lb range. Always consult a vet. Ideally, 2. This sort of consult is always quick and cheap sometimes free and you owe it to your companion to get the opinion of an expert veterinarian. Overweight Frenchies can suffer from some very severe health problems, including heart disease just like humans , labored breathing, and lack of physical exercise. Never take a French Bulldog out to play in sweltering heat, they can die. Generally, older French Bulldogs will require slightly less food than their young counterparts. However, do not restrict food from your French Bulldog if they appear to be underweight or hungry. A reader pointed out in the comments below that these calculations would put french bulldogs in the 40lbs range somewhere around calories per day. This is obviously an outlier situation and no french bulldog needs that many calories. This means feeding your french bulldog less food as they age. If they look thinner than usual, you can move up by 5 calories per pound of weight until you find a magic number. No french bulldog is identical and our suggestions are based on average weights computed to a mean average calorie intake suggestion. Read: I use this calculator and a pad of paper.
