As adults, they will have a coat similar to Tilly, their mom. This coat is easy to care for, does not mat easily, and is easy to brush out regularly. The first two pups pictured have a different dad, they are out of Riley, and the other four are from Sam. Also, note that Riley's pups have a rose nose, and the others have a black nose. These two display tight fleece. Keep short for easy management, or brush regularly to avoid mattes. The first pup had a slightly curlier coat than the others and was fluffier as an adult. You can also see the rose nose on the caramel pup 3 versus the black nose on the apricot pup 6. The black pups range in colors; the first black Australian labradoodle puppy is solid but already showing signs of silver showing through around his nose and will likely silver out as he matures. The other two black pups are phantom or sable, with adorable brown eyebrows—two caramel pups with rose noses and one apricot pup with a black nose. You can see three of each type in this litter. The pups in positions 1, 3, and 6 are tight curls, and the other three are loose. An equal distribution of rose noses, 3 rose and three black. Gypsy makes a wide range of sizes in her litter. Read this page, then check out our Current Labradoodle Puppies for Sale Allocation Process It's important for each family to remember, the more specific you are about what you want, the longer it may take to find the perfect puppy. Since temperament is our priority, we will always look at that first. You may want to be flexible. Puppies temperament is given priority in placement with you We promise you that we will do our best to provide you with the puppy of your dreams. We understand that it is very easy to fall in love with a picture of a puppy, but it is extremely important for families to understand that it is the temperament and personality of the dog that is most critical when determining which puppies and families will be best suited to each other. Our years of experience give us the knowledge and insight to understand this balance, and we will not place puppies solely based on looks. The most important factors for you and flexibility If you allow temperament to be the most important factor when looking for your Labradoodle puppy and can be flexible in the other areas, we will be able to identify the perfect puppy for you much more quickly. Two part allocation process Our allocation process is two part. First I ask each family to give me their top choice for sex and color. I post these on the website so that other families have an idea of what pups may be selected before them. This is not a final choice and can be changed during the selection visit. Family visits at 8 weeks At 8 weeks of age, I schedule each family who is able, to come and visit the litter. This will allow you to come to Great Day Labradoodles and meet the litter from which you are purchasing a puppy. I realize that some families will have the ability to come and some may not have that option. The visits are scheduled in the order the deposits are received. During your individual visit you will meet all available puppies and we will talk about your lifestyle and how the puppies each best fit. In general, families do a great job on selection using the insight I provide and the individual time with the pups. At the conclusion of your visit your selection is final and you will take your puppy home with you. Be open minded We ask families to be open minded when it comes to the many varied specifics such as gender and color. The more open minded you are in the allocation process, the more likely we will be to place a Labradoodle puppy in your home as soon as possible. Puppies go home between 8- 9 weeks. There are many color variations in the merle coat, chocolate, red, blue, parti and phantom are some common colors we produce. The true Australian Labradoodle was designed in the s for the purpose of providing a service and therapy dog to families that suffer from illness or allergies. The breed is allergy-friendly they produce little to no dander, however, some individuals are allergic to the saliva a dog produces. Wally Cochran was the driving force behind this program, and the goal was to produce a non-shedding guide dog. The diversity of these bloodlines have the potential to safeguard the breed from genetic health problems of inbreeding. The result of these crosses produced intelligent, easily trainable puppies that were the beginning of the Australian Labradoodle as we know it now. Chocolate Merle Australian Labradoodle Merle Australian Labradoodle Coat Types The result of these crosses produced intelligent, easily trainable puppies that were the beginning of the Australian Labradoodle as we now know it. Crossing these breeds together compliments the Australian Labradoodle giving these wonderful dogs a hybrid vigor and a variety of coat types: The Wooly Coat: Somewhat poodle like which requires regular grooming is non-shedding and allergy and asthma friendly. The Fleece Coat: The ultimate coat that is easily maintained, non-shedding, allergy and asthma friendly and somewhat like that of an Angora Goat. The Hair Coat: Anything from flat and straight to curls down that back and possibly wavy and minimally shedding, that is less likely to be allergy and asthma friendly. You will usually see this coat in American bred Labradoodles first and second generation bloodlines. A fun loving, quiet, calm yet comical loving companion Overall, the Labradoodle is a fun loving, quiet, calm yet comical, loving companion for families as well as a fantastic service animal, being easily trainable, loyal and intelligent. The Labradoodle is not a recognized breed as yet, however, many breeders are working towards developing a breed standard for the future recognition of the Australian Labradoodle. Blue merle Parti Labradoodle puppy Merle Australian Labradoodles Merle can affect all coat colors in many different breeds. Some dogs are affected by merle, but the patches are either hardly seen or not visible at all. This is why it is essential to have all dogs in a merle breeding program tested for coat color, DNA or blood testing can be done. Combinations such as brindle, sable, phantom or parti merle colors also exist. In addition merle colored dogs have blue and green eye coloring. In the Labradoodles this gene has been brought into the Australian Labradoodle from the merle poodle and or the merle cocker spaniel. We have been breeding merles Australian Labradoodles for 20 years and all of our breeding dogs have been full tested since day one. We work to breed every dog better than the first, always breeding a healthy well balanced dog with a happy disposition and a non shedding allergy friendly coat. In addition, these great dogs are hypo-allergenic and non-shedding, Merle Australian Labradoodles have their characteristically wavy fleece coats, their intelligence, their upbeat nature and their incredibly friendly temperaments. Staffy German Shepherd Mix History: The Staffy german shepherd mix is a relatively new breed of dog, only coming into existence in the last few decades. However, both the American Staffordshire Terrier and the German Shepherd have long and storied histories. These dogs were originally bred for bull-baiting, a cruel bloodsport in which bulls were pitted against dogs. However, when bull-baiting was outlawed in England in , these dogs were repurposed as fighting dogs. They were brought to the United States in the late s and used in dogfights, which were unfortunately quite popular at the time. German Shepherd, on the other hand, was bred in Germany in the late 19th century for herding and guarding sheep. They quickly became popular working dogs, thanks to their intelligence, trainability, and loyalty. They have a short, dense coat that can be black, brown, or tan, with some white markings. They have a strong jaw and a wide head, with pointed ears. Their tails are usually docked, and their legs are long and powerful. However, they can be aggressive toward other animals, so they need to be socialized from a young age. They also require plenty of exercise, as they are a high-energy breed. They are also intelligent and trainable, although they can be stubborn at times. Staffy german shepherd mixes are generally healthy, but they may be prone to some health problems, such as hip dysplasia. These dogs need plenty of exercise, so they are not well suited for apartment living. Staffy german shepherd mixes typically have a lifespan of years. Grooming Requirements: Grooming requirements vary by breed, but it is important to keep in mind that some dogs shed more than others. Make sure they get Bathed as needed so their skin stays moisturized without getting dry from excessive bathing frequency- just try not to overdo things because this can lead to acne on rare skin problems too due to different genetics within breeds when bred together centuries ago. To keep their energy level up, you will need to take long walks with your dog. You should also make sure they are well-hydrated when you go on hikes or even just around town. They might take the alpha position if not handled properly so make sure you offer treats that are big enough! Popular Mixed Breeds:.

I grew up on a farm where we had all sorts of animals, from cows and horses to pigs and chickens. My love for animals led me to pursue a career in writing about them. I have been a pet care writer for over 5 years and have extensive knowledge of animal care, health, and behavior. This playful and friendly toy dog is not a hunter. Its mild character makes it a good friend for a child and adoring family dog. These two dogs are different in size, appearance and character. Nevertheless, they can have something in common. It is the Golden Retriever Shih Tzu mix. Personality It is not a secret that every dog breed has a purpose. The Golden Retriever Shih Tzu mix is a middle size dog with an interesting character: it can be playful, alert and lively while playing, but clever and dedicated while training comparing with Shih Tzu. It has better adaptability than the Golden Retriever. Health Problems and Prevention As both dogs the Golden Retriever and Shih Tzu are generally healthy there are not prone to serious diseases. However, as any other breed they can have an allergy, for example, an allergy at shampoo or some food, eye problem, ear infection, dental problems and others. To avoid these problems do not forget to keep its vaccines updated. This breed is rather unusual as ancestors of dogs are from different breeds. They are not just different in character and habits, they are different in size. Be careful! While crossing the breeds: female Shih Tzu can have problems during the pregnancy or the whelping process as the size of puppies can be bigger than usual. Female Golden Retriever will cope with it much easier. In order to avoid health problems it is better to ask a specialist about the specificity of the diet. It is similar to any other: you have to keep vaccinations updated, train them regularly in order to make the dog obedient but active, do bathing regularly, and comb it every day. This dog will not give you such problems as drooling or giddy behavior. It is sensitive to hot or chilly weather. Keep it inside during summer, providing a place in shadow while walking and a plenty of cool water at home, and do not make it frozen in winter. You will rarely see it, as breeders do not often cross dogs of different sizes and characters. However, if you take such a dog, you become an owner of a beautiful, loyal, and alert pet with a docile personality. This mix inherits the best traits from both parent breeds, making it a friendly, intelligent, and loyal companion. Key Characteristics Size: The Golden Shih Tzu typically ranges in size from pounds, depending on the dominant genes from its parents. They usually stand inches tall at the shoulder. Coat: This mix often has a long, silky coat that can come in various colors, including gold, cream, white, and black. Their coat may be wavy or straight, depending on the dominant genes. Temperament: The Golden Shih Tzu is known for its friendly and outgoing nature. They are intelligent, easy to train, and are great with children and other pets. Life Expectancy: Golden Shih Tzus generally have a life expectancy of years. Lord Tweedmouth bred these dogs for hunting purposes, creating a loyal and intelligent dog with a love for retrieving game. These dogs were bred to be companions to royalty and were highly prized. The breed arrived in the United States in the late s and has become increasingly popular, ranking 20th in AKC registration statistics. Puppies from reputable breeders with high-quality bloodlines and health testing can be on the higher end of this price range. Keep in mind that the initial cost of purchasing a puppy is just the beginning. Due to the significant size difference between the Golden Retriever and the Shih Tzu, creating a Golden Shih Tzu mix can be challenging. Golden Retrievers are medium to large-sized dogs, weighing between 55 and 75 pounds, while Shih Tzus are a small breed, weighing between 9 and 16 pounds. This size discrepancy can pose challenges for breeders when it comes to mating the parent breeds. This method involves collecting sperm from the male dog usually the larger Golden Retriever and manually inseminating the female dog typically the smaller Shih Tzu. Artificial insemination is a safer and more controlled process that ensures the well-being of both parent dogs, especially the smaller Shih Tzu, which could be at risk during natural mating due to the size difference. Multigenerational Breeding Golden Shih Tzus are often created by breeding a purebred Golden Retriever with a purebred Shih Tzu, resulting in first-generation F1 puppies. However, some breeders might choose to breed two Golden Shih Tzus or breed an F1 Golden Shih Tzu back to one of the parent breeds to produce multigenerational puppies. They inherit the intelligence and loyalty of the Golden Retriever, along with the affectionate and playful nature of the Shih Tzu. These dogs are great with children and other pets, making them an excellent choice for families. Golden Shih Tzus are also eager to please and respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. They love to learn new tricks and excel in various dog sports such as agility and obedience. Regular exposure to new people, places, and experiences will help them develop a friendly and outgoing personality. Exercise and Activity Levels Golden Shih Tzus are moderately active dogs, requiring daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. A daily walk of at least 30 minutes, along with playtime in the yard or at a dog park, will help keep your Golden Shih Tzu mentally and physically stimulated. Due to their intelligence, these dogs also benefit from mental stimulation to prevent boredom. Puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions will help keep their minds sharp and engaged. Grooming and Coat Care The coat of a Golden Shih Tzu can vary in length and texture, depending on the dominant genes from their parents. Typically, these dogs have a long, silky coat that requires regular grooming to keep it clean and tangle-free. Use a slicker brush or a comb designed for long-haired breeds. Bathing: Bathe your Golden Shih Tzu every weeks, or as needed, using a gentle dog shampoo. Ensure you rinse thoroughly to avoid any residue that might irritate their skin. Health Considerations While Golden Shih Tzus are generally healthy dogs, they can still be prone to certain health issues inherited from their parent breeds. Regular veterinary checkups and preventative care are essential to ensure your dog stays healthy. Additionally, working with a reputable breeder who tests their breeding dogs for genetic health issues can also help reduce the risk. Training and Socialization Golden Shih Tzus are intelligent and eager to please, which makes them relatively easy to train. Using positive reinforcement methods, such as praise and treats, will help motivate your dog during training sessions. Enrolling your Golden Shih Tzu in a puppy socialization class can be a great way to introduce them to new experiences and other dogs in a controlled environment. Leash training. Height: 8 - 11 inches at the shoulder Weight: 9 - 16 lb. Both of these dogs are very friendly and loving dogs. There will be a unique offset of the two energy levels. She is calm, intelligent, confident and eager to please. While friendly she is wary of strangers and alert making a good watchdog. She gets along well with everyone and is quite a well mannered dog! She loves to have fun and play too and will need some outdoor space to do this in. She is loving, reliable, brave and warm. Shih Tzu Golden Retriever Mix Health All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. The Dalmatian mixed with the Shih Tzu might be prone to skin problems, allergies, joint dysplasia Note that these are just common problems in both breeds. This will probably be a more than moderate shedder with the Shih Tzu offsetting some of the more aggressive shedding from the Retriever. Get ready to invest in a good vacuum and keep your floors clean anyways. Give them baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out their skin. What are the exercise requirements? Plan on taking them for extremely long walks and hikes to keep their energy level down. This exercise will keep them from being destructive. A tired dog is a good dog. What are the training requirements? This is an intelligent dog that should be easy to train. The best thing you can do is break the sessions into shorter daily sessions to keep their attention span higher. So make sure to praise her when she does well. She is an intelligent dog who loves to please, and loves a physical challenge. The more exercise she gets the easier she will be to train. Proper socialization is imperative to all dogs and puppies. Make sure to take her to the park and doggy day care to get her around as many people and dogs as possible. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U. A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible. Overfeeding any dog is not a good idea as that can really exacerbate health problems such as elbow and hip dysplasia. A good diet to look into is Raw Food Diet. A raw food diet will be especially good for the Wolf background. Links to other breeds you might be interested in.
Australian Labradoodles are dogs that have a very interesting history. They were first bred in the s by a member of the Australian Guide Dog Association who set out to produce a hypo-allergenic guide dog, for a blind woman who was allergic to dogs. They can be considered to be six in one, as six different breeds were used to create what I believe is the ultimate dog. They are gentle, smart, loving, playful and obedient. An extra bonus is that they have an allergy friendly coat and do not shed! Tootsie is a cuddly and very loving dog who adores children. She is very intelligent and has proved easy to train. Versatile: Labradoodles are versatile dogs that can be trained for a variety of tasks, including therapy work, obedience, and agility. They can be expensive to purchase and maintain. They require regular grooming, especially if they have a curly coat. They are prone to some health problems, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Overall, Labradoodles are wonderful dogs that make great companions for people of all ages. If you are looking for a friendly, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dog, a Labradoodle may be a good choice for you. Labradoodle History Wally Conron, who was in charge of the breeding program for the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, purposefully crossbred a Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever in to develop the Labradoodle as a hypoallergenic guide dog. The first cross produced Sultan, a dog with a hypoallergenic coat, aptitude, intelligence, and personality suitable for being an effective guide dog. Sultan worked successfully with a woman in Hawaii. Other breeders saw the merit of crossing these two breeds, and the Labradoodle quickly rose in popularity like its Labrador Retriever parent. These dogs are often produced by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, but multigenerational breeding has begun in an attempt to produce a viable and recognizable breed. The Australian Labradoodle Association and the International Australian Labradoodle Association are taking steps to move this designer breed into registered breed status in the next few years. These groups have made great efforts to bring breeders together so that they are working to achieve the same standards through multigenerational breeding. Labradoodle Size The Labradoodle comes in three size variations, depending on the size of the Poodle used for the first-generation breeding. The three sizes are Standard, Medium, and Miniature. The Standard Labradoodle should be 22 to 24 inches in height for a male and 21 to 23 inches in height for a female, while both can range in weight from 50 to 65 pounds. The Medium Labradoodle should be 18 to 20 inches high for a male and 17 to 19 inches high for a female, with both weighing from 30 to 45 pounds. The average size for a Miniature Labradoodle is between 14 to 16 inches and 15 to 25 pounds. All of that said, there is a lot of variation in Labradoodle sizes. Some can be smaller or larger than expected. Labradoodle Personality The Labradoodle is an intelligent dog who can make the ideal family pet if properly trained. They are friendly and accept and treat everyone like their best friend. They can be gentle, but they can also be joyful, showing their happiness through exuberant jumping and playing. They also tend to be easygoing, since the Labradoodle was bred not to be aggressive. Temperament is affected by a number of factors, including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Meeting siblings, parents, or other relatives of the dog is also helpful for evaluating what a puppy will be like when they grow up. Socialization helps ensure that your Labradoodle puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling them in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking them to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help them polish their social skills. Here are a few conditions to watch out for: Ear Infections: These can plague Labradoodles because of their floppy ears. The ears trap moisture and should be regularly checked. X-ray screening is the most certain way to diagnose the problem. Either way, arthritis can develop as the dog ages. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : Similar to hip dysplasia, this is also a degenerative disease. The disease varies in severity: the dog could simply develop arthritis, or they could become lame. Treatment includes surgery, weight management, medical management, and anti-inflammatory medication. It can cause mild or severe seizures that may show themselves as unusual behavior—such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding—or even by falling down, limbs rigid, and losing consciousness. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Allergies: Allergies are a common ailment in dogs, and the Labradoodle is no exception. Treatment varies according to the cause and may include dietary restrictions, medications, and environmental changes. Diabetes Mellitus: This is a disorder in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. The dog will lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Symptoms of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and the administration of insulin. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : This is a family of eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Early in the disease, affected dogs become night-blind; they lose sight during the day as the disease progresses. Many affected dogs adapt well to their limited or lost vision, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Hypothyroidism : This is a disorder of the thyroid gland. It is treated with medication and diet. They require about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day and would do better with a fenced yard in which to expel some energy. Some Labradoodles, especially in the first generation, can require even more exercise. The Labradoodle makes an excellent jogging companion but also needs some time off-leash to burn off steam. The Labradoodle is an intelligent and eager-to-please dog. Training should be easy as long as consistency and positive reinforcement are the methods. Socialize them from puppyhood, since they tend to hurl themselves headlong into canine situations without regard to the feelings of other dogs. This can lead to some problems if the unknown dog is aggressive. Despite their activity levels, a Labradoodle can adjust to living in suburban or city environments and can do well in rural settings. A crate is also a place where they can retreat for a nap. Crate training at a young age will help your Labradoodle accept confinement if they ever needs to be boarded or hospitalized. Never stick your Labradoodle in a crate all day long, however. Labradoodle Feeding Recommended daily amount: 1 to 2. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on their size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Keep your Labradoodle in good shape by measuring their food and feeding them twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at them. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on their back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see their ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Labradoodle, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Labradoodle Coat Color And Grooming Although a Labradoodle can have one of a range of coat types, the desired length is four to six inches. They have a single coat with hair ranging from straight to loose curls. There are three types of texture: The Hair coat, which is similar to fur in shedding breeds, is the least popular. Hair coats shed and usually have a normal doggy odor. This coat is seen in first generations, although breeders try to avoid it. The Fleece coat has a silky texture often described as an Angora goat texture. This coat ranges from straight to wavy. Labradoodles are considered to be non- to low shedders, especially those with a Fleece or Wool coat. Hair coats tend to shed just as they do in other breeds, ranging from very low to average shedding. The Labradoodle comes in a wide variety of colors. They can also have parti-colored coats, which consist of brindles, phantom, patched, or sable colors. Grooming requirements vary depending on the length and type of coat the dog has. Generally speaking, you can expect to brush a Labradoodle about once or twice per week. Some can be clipped or trimmed every six to eight weeks to keep the coat easy to maintain. Like Labs, Labradoodles can be prone to ear infections, so take a little extra time caring for their ears. Dry and clean them after a swim, and check them once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection. Then wipe them out weekly with a cotton ball dampened with gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaner to prevent problems. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Dog toenails have blood vessels in them, and if you cut too far you can cause bleeding—and your dog may not cooperate the next time they see the nail clippers come out. Handle their paws frequently—dogs are touchy about their feet—and look inside their mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Labradoodle Children And Other Pets The Labradoodle does well with children and can be an affectionate and gentle companion for any child. They can also be exuberant and might knock down smaller children, but they will love them with all their heart. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Labradoodles usually get along well with other dogs and pets. Like most dogs, they need training and socialization for optimum success at living with and visiting other animals. Labradoodle Rescue Groups Labradoodles are often brought home without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. Many end up in the care of shelters or rescues because of this. It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Labradoodles because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. Conran decided to breed a Standard Poodle with a Labrador. One of the three samples was suitable for individuals with allergies. These pioneers were determined to produce litters with uniform conformation, coat type, and disposition. The Australian Labradoodle is currently considered a cross between the Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, and Labrador Retriever, whereas the Labradoodle is only a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. The Australian Labradoodle consistently produces hypoallergenic coats and exceptional personalities. How Much Does a Labradoodle Cost? Danielle and Mike had visited with Bella a couple of days after Christmas and Susan was smitten. She wanted a dog, NOW. Susan went online and searched, mistakenly, for Labradoodles. She spoke with the breeder and learned that a litter had just been born but all the puppies were called for already, except one. It was Freddy! Because of a recessive gene from his grandfather he turned out to be a mini Labradoodle. Well, that suited Susan even better as she preferred a smaller dog. The important thing is that they love me unconditionally. Susan tells me that God loves me, too. Wherever they are, I am. If they are at their desks, I am under their feet. When they are sitting on the sofa, I sit on their laps or beside them. They put a rug under the kitchen table, so that I can be comfortable when they are eating. We go out in the back yard several times a day. There is agility equipment, toys, balls, and Frisbees for me to play with and I have my own pool. They usually always take me with them wherever they go in their car. They say I am fast and smart and that I have the potential to be a champion. In the meantime, I am enjoying the classes and practicing at home. Susan and Bruce tell me they are proud of me and they want me to be the happy little dog, God, whoever that is, wants me to be. I sometimes think it would be fun to have a playmate, another dog in the house. And thanks to PuppySpot for contacting me about writing a Blog post for them. We hold ourselves and our clients to the highest standards and aim to improve the life of each puppy, breeder and owner who joins our family. Photography and Prints meant to last a lifetime! But, it is possible to get Labradoodles with parti coloring — that is where at least 50 percent of their body is white, and the rest has spots or blotches of color. Can Labradoodles Have Spots? Like any other dog breed, coat color comes down to genetics in Labradoodles. American Labradoodles tend to have the same coloring as their purebred Lab and Poodle parents. More often than not, this Doodle will have a solid-colored coat. These dogs have at least 50 percent of their coat as white , but will have spots, blotches, or patches of another color throughout. So, a parti Labradoodle can also be seen as a spotted Labradoodle, depending on the pattern of its coloring. Since the Australian Labradoodle has a potentially larger genetic pool, their coloring can be quite varied. The most common spotting pattern in Labradoodles is the parti coat color. These spotted Labradoodles will have two colors on their coat — white and something else. At least half of their coat will be white, forming the base of their pattern. But, the other color will appear in spots or blotches, dispersed randomly over their body. Some may have lots of color on their head, and only a few spots elsewhere, and others may have more color on their torso than the rest of their bodies. Other than their coat color, spotted Labradoodles will look similar to any other Labradoodle. Of course, there will be some variation, especially depending on the generation of your puppy. But, they can have hair coats, fleece coats, or wool coats. And, they will likely grow to be a large dog — most often falling somewhere between the sizes of their parents. Mixed breed dogs are becoming much more popular. Can Labradoodles Have Merle Spots? Like the above, spotted Labradoodles with merle patterning are not common at all. Neither Labradors nor Poodles have merle patterns. For instance, you may be looking at an Aussiedoodle. Are Spotted Labradoodles Rare? This is because parti coloring can express itself in any number of ways. Puppies could have splodges of color, flecks of color, or even stripes of color in their fur! So, even if you find a parti spotted Labradoodle puppy with beautiful spots, they may shift in size, shape, and dispersal a little once your pup has shed their early puppy coat. Many breeders will specialize in various colors. But, your chances of finding a spotted Labradoodle puppy may also vary depending on which colors and patterns are in high demand near you. For instance, shades like apricot and red are very popular in Labradoodle puppies. So, you may be more likely to find these puppies than parti Labradoodles. Doing so can be a sign that a breeder is looking to get the best profit possible, rather than selling puppies based on their health and temperament. Finding a reputable breeder is just as important as finding a puppy with the coat pattern you love. Instead, you may need to seek out Labradoodle breed associations, or simply search for individual breeders. Labradoodles are trending at the moment, so there are a lot of bad breeders to be wary of, including puppy farms, pet stores, and backyard breeders. When you find a breeder, make sure to ask lots of questions and expect plenty in return. See evidence of health testing in person, and get a good look at where the puppies and mother dog are being kept. Most would be more than happy to reserve puppies that seem to have more of a spotted pattern for you once a litter has arrived. Or do you have a spotted Labradoodle at home? We would love to hear about them, and love to hear what they look like! Let us know all about your spotted Doodles in the comments! Readers Also Liked. Only families buying puppies pay the site. And, if you are a responsible pet-owner, you should also steer clear. So even though the site swears it will not send you a puppy from a puppy mill, there is no way to check that. Complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau indicate that this site is a disaster for anyone who loves animals. How it works Breeders fill out an application to list their dogs on the site. The contract has some general requirements regarding vaccinations and animal health and requires the breeder to guarantee that if the dog is found to have a congenital disease in the first year — or is brought to a vet with a serious illness in the first 14 days — that the breeder will be financially responsible for taking the dog back, exchanging it or paying the vet bills. Given that puppies are living things, not defective handbags, few people do that. The rest of the contract with the breeder deals with advertising. Specifically, you must advertise each puppy in a litter with a name — that cannot be used anywhere else. Naturally, breeders can and do sell their puppies elsewhere. But they have to use different names and different photos. Customer side Customers shopping for dogs on competing sites like PuppyFind can search for local breeders. They can also get information about the breeder selling their dog and contact that breeder directly. None of that information is available at PuppySpot. Ludicrous costs The PuppySpot is willing to advertise dogs for free is because the site is charging more for them than the breeder. Therefore, they make money on the mark-up. The site also charges a host of fees to buyers. These include delivery fees — even if you pick up the puppy yourself. And, if you compare the prices of dogs on PuppySpot vs. Sick animals But what is most tragic about this site are the number of complaints about sick and dying dogs. Animals sent with Parvo, Giardia, and parasites. Dogs with serious congenital diseases that are often the result of overbreeding. Recommendations Responsible breeders want to know who is buying their dogs and they have no problems answering questions about health and vaccinations and bloodlines. If she doeslife expectancy would be only two years additional. Without the surgery Death is eminent. We are heartbroken. Our vet said this was congenital at birth. Do yourself a favor do not buy from this company under ANY circumstance. Congenital ailments My 16 month old puppy was diagnosed with bilateral elbow dysplasia and this company could care less. The only option I had was sending him back and getting a refund just so he can be put down or keeping him and dealing with this by myself. Delayed delivery I bought a puppy one month ago. I was told the puppy will be delivered to the door. One day before the delivery date, they called me to tell me the delivery was canceled because of weather conditions. After that, they went radio silent: no emails no calls, no responses. My son is sad and frustrated and we have asked for a full refund. They are not responsible, they are not serious. I have my lawyer ready to call them because I am not going to tolerate this scam. Great until they get your money. Then they lie. Bought a puppy at 10weeks. Was told it was going to ship the 9thth. Another delay led to another to another. Then the puppy was supposed to be delivered on the 23rd. Then they rescheduled delivery for the 29th because the dog now has Giardia. Breeder vetting? They ultimately cancelled on me after changing the travel twice, due to a congenital defect present from birth. The defect is indicative of poor breeding. You will talk to random people every time you call or use the app. These random people will likely be reading from a script somewhere overseas. They will not let you contact the breeder directly so all questions and requests for updates, pictures, etc have to go through puppyspot. They only require breeders to update pictures every 2 weeks. So asking for pictures is pointless. We took her to the vet the next day after she arrived and found out she had Giardia and worms. After six months of the puppy constantly vomiting, having extreme diarrhea and giving her constant medication, she is now fairly healthy but still undersized for 10 months old. Stay far, far away from this company and do not believe the doctored photos and false promises.
Photo Credit: adognamedhumphrey on Instagram Imagine dropping your fluffy dog off at the groomer and picking up a completely shaved Bernedoodle. However, shaving your Bernedoodle puppy before their adult coat has grown in could cause permanent damage and should be avoided. Not only will this prevent matting, but it will help them become comfortable with grooming and not fearful of it. Breeds like the Poodle, on the other hand, only have a single coat. To avoid damaging the undercoat, dogs with double coats should never be shaved. With the Bernedoodle being a cross between one single-coated and one double-coated breed, how do you know if shaving them is safe? Most Bernedoodles are bred to have a single coat similar to that of a Poodle. Pet parents are often quick to blame their groomer after their Bernedoodle gets shaved. Groomers typically shave dogs only when their fur is significantly matted. While minor matting can sometimes be brushed out, attempting to brush out severe matting is unlikely to work and makes the process more painful for your dog. The only reasonable solution at this point is to shave your Bernedoodle. A shaved Bernedoodle is only temporary! Especially if your Bernedoodle has always sported a longer teddy-bear cut or puppy cut, their new appearance can take some getting used to. The important thing to realize is that even the worst-looking haircuts are only temporary! Preventing your Bernedoodle from needing to be shaved is easier than you think. Most Bernedoodles need to be brushed at least every other day. Shaving your Bernedoodle is nothing to be embarrassed about! Unfortunately, there seems to be a certain stigma amongst doodle owners about shaving your dog since it usually means they were matted. Mistakes happen, and even the best dog owners with the strictest brushing regimens sometimes slip up. With Poodle-mix breeds like the Bernedoodle, all it takes is a little slip-up for matting to happen. Your shaved Bernedoodle will thank you! Many Bernedoodle owners report that their dogs seem sad, stressed, or embarrassed after being shaved. According to animal behavioralists , embarrassment is likely too complex of an emotion for our dogs to experience. Shaving your Bernedoodle is nothing to worry about or stress over. Grooming Your Bernedoodle Grooming Your Bernedoodle The Bernedoodle breed, also referred to as a Bernese mountain poo, is the product of a Bernese mountain dog parent and a poodle parent. This hybrid dog breed combines the best characteristics of both types of dog, such as the intelligence and low-shedding coat from its poodle part and the unwavering loyalty and laid-back demeanor of its Bernese mountain dog part. This combination of dog breeds also makes Bernedoodles irresistibly fluffy, with several variations in coat types. Of course, this means grooming your Bernedoodle should be done reglarly. Consider this your ultimate guide on how to properly groom a Bernedoodle , complete with a list of popular Bernedoodle haircuts you can choose to keep your furry family member looking its best. Keep reading to learn more about grooming needs. Except, of course, the fact that they require a substantial amount of grooming. More on that later. Keep in mind that grooming this breed is more than simply keeping its hair clean and trimmed. It also involves nail clipping, regular brushing and keeping its skin moisturized. For some people, the rule of thumb for Bernedoodle baths is whenever their pup starts to smell or becomes visibly dirty. Regular grooming will keep your dog happy and healthy. Bernedoodle Coats and Shedding As previously mentioned, Bernedoodles have different types of coats, and each coat type comes with different attributes. These are the different Bernedoodle coat types and what you can expect from them in regard to grooming. Straight coats are a characteristic of the Bernese mountain dog parent. A wavy-haired Bernedoodle will have a much softer coat compared to straight coats and be more prone to matting. Curly coats wool are a characteristic of a pure poodle parent. However, these coats need regular daily brushing because of their tightly wound curls, the coat type most susceptible to matting. The general consensus for weekly brushing is: Your dog needs a minimum brushing of twice a week to get rid of any dead or loose fur. As long as you commit to it a few times a week, it should be fine. Most Bernedoodle owners stick to two to three times per week, paying close attention to whether their dog needs an extra brushing session or two. You should bathe your Bernedoodle every two to three months and whenever they get into something dirty, like mud puddles. For both straight-haired Bernedoodles and curly-haired Bernedoodles, most groomers recommend you bring them in every four to six weeks for maintenance. However, a puppy is a different story and will likely take more effort on your part to train it to become accustomed to the process. The goal is to make brushing and bathing a positive experience for your Bernedoodle puppy so the process becomes easier each time you do it. To keep from scaring your puppy during bath time, pre-fill the tub or sink with lukewarm water before bringing it into the room. Be very gentle as you soak and wash it, giving more praise during the process. Refrain from scolding if it hesitates or is visibly afraid — this is an important part of their development, and fear can lead to anxiety issues later on. To do this, handle their paws beforehand, one at a time, increasing the amount of time each day. Once puppy vaccinations are complete, you can take them to the groomer. So, fill up the tub with lukewarm water, and be sure to soak it thoroughly before adding the shampoo. Give it a thorough rinse, then follow the same steps with the conditioner. Be sure to speak with your dog groomer first about what they recommend for your specific breed, as well as which services such as conditioning count as an additional option. Many Bernedoodle owners opt for a shorter haircut as it reduces at-home grooming time. You can also alternate Bernedoodle haircuts to try out different styles or get it ready for changing seasons. However, it will require more frequent brushing, especially if your Bernedoodle has curly hair. The Bernedoodle Summer Cut, as expected, is much shorter. The Bernedoodle Poodle Cut imitates the traditional look of a poodle and can become high maintenance, as the hair will be longer on some body parts. This cut works best on curly and wavy hair. The Bernedoodle Lamb Cut is another poodle hairstyle in which the hair is the same length all around with the face, feet and most of the tail shaved. Keep in mind that when you groom a Bernedoodle , it should be a bonding experience. So, learn to do it correctly and make sure you have the proper tools and the time to commit to your pup. It is important to remember that the curlier the coat is, the more you will need to groom it. Straighter hair will not matt as quickly, but brushing often will keep the shedding under control. You will want a slicker brush for all coat types and short to medium-length hair. You will want to get a wide and fine-tooth comb for longer coats. Use the wide-tooth comb first to break up any mats that might be forming, then the fine-tooth comb for an evening out and detangling more minor knots. A de-matting brush on hand will help if your dog goes too long between brushes. These brushes are gentler than brushes because a brush will tug at a mat and pull the skin in return. When breaking up mats, always start at the ends with your de-matting brush and work your way to the skin. Brushing this way will cause less breakage and will not hurt your dog. So, if you are uncomfortable trimming nails alone, an experienced groomer or vet will gladly help. In either case, having nail trimmers on hand is a smart thing to do. Dogs can get broken and snagged nails just as people do. And in that event, you will need to help trim their nail for them to prevent quicking. Bathing A good moisturizing shampoo is best for preserving natural oils in their fur. These natural oils give their coats their shine. Using a dog conditioner will also help keep the softness. Since Bernedoodles do not shed, it is vital to take them to be groomed every weeks. During this groom, they will get a wash, nail trim, and a haircut at the very least. Think of it as if you were to get your hair cut. Also, when visiting a groomer, never set unrealistic goals on how the cut will look. Bernedoodles with wavy hair cannot have a haircut like a Standard Poodle. Visits to the groomer should start after your puppy has had all its vaccinations. It also allows your puppy to get used to the services it will require all of its life. Waiting too long to get your puppy groomed will stress your dog and make it more challenging to groom. This cross means that they are not full-bred dogs. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles are loyal, easy to train, and have a fun, easy-going character. They have high energy and are great for active lifestyles and kids. The Bernedoodle is known for its smart mind and keen ability to train. Therefore, these dogs are very motivated to make their owners happy; therefore, they are easy to train using simple treats and praise. Bernedoodles have a fantastic memory and will pass with flying colors any training course they are enrolled in. The average lifespan of a Bernedoodle is years. This is a long time for a larger dog that weighs pounds. With proper diet and exercise, these dogs are not uncommon to live much longer. Always choose one that has undergone genetic testing for all breeding pairs when looking for a breeder. This testing will ensure the health and temperament of your pup. Bernedoodles are an excellent pet for any home. They shed minimally, are loyal, family-oriented, and are easily trained. An eight-week-old puppy will likely not require much grooming, as they will have little hair. However, starting at this young age will help them get used to the process and keep their coat shiny and smooth. Puppies are very impressionable. Your Bernedoodle will be much less likely to react negatively to grooming if you begin as soon as you bring them home. On top of a daily brushing routine, your Bernedoodle will likely need regular professional grooming. Often, this is required to handle their hair growth, as many take after their Poodle parent in this regard. You can start these sessions as soon as your puppy is up-to-date on vaccinations. Usually, most groomers will allow the dog to come in after receiving their rabies vaccination at 12 to 16 weeks. Some owners may decide to wait longer — at least until the puppy has received multiple doses of other vaccinations, like canine distemper. You can speak to your vet about when the best time to start professional grooming sessions is. The earlier you start taking your puppy to a professional, the better adapted to these sessions. These sessions also provide a great deal of socialization, as your dog will be interacting with the groomer and potentially other dogs. We recommend that you start grooming your puppy at home as soon as possible. Grooming a Bernedoodle can be a bit complicated. They are a mixed breed, so their coat is not as standardized as other breeds. They may inherit genes from either of their parents, which will affect their coat. In general, Bernedoodle will need to be brushed two to three times a week. These sessions will help keep their fur sleek and free from tangles. With the right brush, you can often remove much of the dirt and debris during these brushing sessions, which will elongate the time they need between baths. You can start these at-home sessions as soon as you bring your puppy home. They may not need them quite as much as this young age. But starting new will make them more accepting of the brush later. Puppies are very adaptable and will become used to whatever they are around, including grooming. You should also get your puppy used to having their feet handled, as this is important for nail clipping. Do the same with their ears, as they will likely need to be cleaned every few months or so. Most Bernedoodles will need professional grooming and a haircut every two to three months. Many of them do not shed, so this haircut is essential to their overall wellbeing. Otherwise, their coat will keep getting longer. Most groomers will not allow your puppy to be groomed until they have received their rabies vaccination. Usually, this occurs between 16 to 18 weeks. But you can sometimes request it as early as .Some owners prefer to wait until their dog is wholly vaccinated at 16 weeks anyway. Waiting to get their rabies vaccination at this time often makes the most sense. We recommend getting your puppy to a groomer as soon as their vaccinations are complete. The earlier they start going to a groomer, the more comfortable they will be. Should you use grooming clippers to shave your dog down when it gets hot? It depends on their coat type. If your dog has a double coat, it is not recommended to shave them during the summer. A double-coat works by having a soft, insulating layer underneath a waterproof layer. If you shave them, these two layers will be at the same level. The insulating layer will not be protected from the elements, and neither will your dog. While a double-coat may seem thick, it is designed to keep the dog cool during the summer and warm during the winter. A Poodle does not have a double-coat, so they are less able to regulate their body temperature. We recommend trimming Poodle-like coats down in the summer months and then keeping them longer in the winter. For dogs with a Poodle-like coat, you can technically cut it down as much as you want. You could completely shave the dog, and the fur would still grow back fine. However, dogs with double coats should not be shaved down to their undercoat. However, they cannot be shaved down any considerable amount. Be sure to speak to a professional that has experience with these canines. Puppies usually cost less because they are smaller. It takes the groomer less time to groom them, and they can be handled more efficiently. However, you can expect your costs to increase as they age. The size of your dog also plays a significant role, as a larger dog will take longer to groom. Conclusion Bernedoodles should begin at-home grooming sessions as soon as you bring them home. Many breeders start grooming their puppies very early and can let you know their routine. They will not allow your puppy inside until then, as they can potentially catch diseases from the other dogs. And, in many areas, it is illegal for breeders to groom dogs that have not been vaccinated against rabies. Therefore, the odds of them catching an illness are relatively low. Plan to go to a professional groomer when they are around 16 weeks old. Author: Kristin Kristin was born in Tennessee and currently lives there with her husband and children.
