You can expect to bathe and completely blow out their coat every weeks, and plan to have them trimmed approximately every weeks. For an adult Australian Labradoodle, you should allow on average, 60 minutes every two weeks for brushing time. If your Labradoodle is active in the water or hiking in nature areas, you may have to run a brush through them more often to remove debris or loosen hair clumping during the drying process post-swimming. Wait until your dog is dry, then run a slicker through their coat. Purchasing a small grooming table and arm, and training them to stand still during brushing and drying will save your back. But be warned that you need to always have a hand on your dog when they are on the grooming table or attached to a grooming arm. Never leave them or turn away or they can try to jump off the table and injure themselves. When your Labradoodle has short hair, an inch or two, regular brushing with a slicker can work just fine. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. The leg will look like a column. TAIL: The tail needs to be de-matted and trimmed. It is also important to have the hair removed, either trimmed or pulled, inside the dog's ears. Fido products are expensive, but I find them very good and this is what I use on the puppies, and my own dogs. Some vets will advocate regular plucking, others may suggest trimming the hair, but regardless, keeping the hair minimal, and the ears clean, with the use of an ear cleanser or a drying agent will reduce the risk of problems. You pop the solution into each ear and massage it for seconds and then wipe it out with a tissue — never use ear buds! Check with your vet for tips on hair removal and which solution to use. Your dogs nails should be done each time they get their coat trimmed and this is a service most dog groomers usually do as part of their clip. Top of the head The top of the head should be natural, and cut long enough that it parts naturally by itself. To trim, pull the hair forward and up and trim to around cm. You want to be able to see the dogs eyes easily. Leave the eyelashes long — it helps to keep hair out of their eyes. Eyes Below the eye at the muzzle, trim the top of the muzzle short at an angle just under the eyes so they can see easily. This makes it easier to clean around the eyes also. They will not need a full grooming, but they must have a grooming experience during this critical time. Book them a bath, blow-out and trim of eyes, under the ear flaps, feet, sanitary and nail trim. How to Brush: Brush to the skin, working from under the coat. Work from the feet up to the body and the tail to the head. Never shampoo your dog when the coat is filthy, unless you want to felt the coat. Instead hose the dog down and then put the dog in its crate and wait for the mud to dry and drop out, follow up by deep brushing. By design, these dogs have little to no shedding. Mine do not shed at all! There is also little to no smell. In fact, I do not find the need to bathe my dogs between grooming visits unless they have gotten into mud or my boys have accidentally dropped something on them. Having said that, brushing your Australian Labradoodle every day is important as it is for any pet. Daily grooming helps keep the coat in good condition by: Removing dirt. Spreading the natural oils throughout the coat. Preventing tangles from forming. Keeping the skin clean and free from irritation. It is also good to have a pin brush as well. You should get a mat splitter to have on hand in case of these situations. As they get older, they will grow a thicker coat. How to Brush your Australian Labradoodle Brush up, down, and sideways until there is no congestion or mats in the hair. Practice will help or ask a groomer for some tips. Starting early helps the dog to learn to enjoy the time and not panic. Like children, puppies have short attention spans. They will require some special attention. Brushing Your Labradoodle When your Labradoodle has short hair, an inch or two, regular brushing with a pin brush or slicker can work just fine. Once the hair gets longer, it is important to make sure you are reaching all the way to the base of the hair. If not, loose hair is not removed below the surface and matts will begin to form. If that hair builds up, it is not going to be possible to clip the hair at a decent length and the only alternative will be to shave the hair close to the skin. In order to keep a coat longer than and inch or so, you will want to use a technique called line brushing. Line Brushing It is simply done by parting the coat with your free hand and brushing the loose hair on the other side of the part, starting at the base of the hair. With every other stroke or so, you can bring down a small bit of the hair being held up by your hand. You will slowly move your hand up that section of coat. Start low on a section of the body and work your way up. Using the edge of the pin brush, start brushing from the part, down the length of the hair. Complete the stroke to the end of the hair. Repeat till smooth and ready to continue. Pick up a small amount of hair from the other side of the part to continue the process, working your way up that section of the body.

Yawning is another gesture made by dogs that feel tense or stressed. A dog yawning is a sign of unease and not knowing how to deal with a situation, it relieves tension inside them. When a dog shows their teeth by pulling the top lip up, the bottom lip down and growling, they are feeling very aggressive and could potentially bite. They also wag their tail when feeling confidently aggressive. A tail held very low between the legs or tucked under the body shows a nervous or fearful dog. A tail in a natural position, level or lower than the body and wagging either slowly or crazily shows a dog that is happy and excited. However… A tail held high in the air and wagging side to side slowly and purposefully shows a dog feeling dominant, threatening or aggressive. If held high, you should perhaps be a little cautious. Reading Your Golden Retrievers Emotions From Their Body Language After looking at how different body parts are used to express different thoughts and feelings, we now need to look at the dog as a whole. We need to see how they hold their body in general, what postures they use as well as their facial expressions and tail to show how they truly feel. The same facial expressions could have a very different meaning when read in conjunction with the general posture of their whole body. As a general rule a dog can only really do three things with their bodies: Make themselves appear larger and more threatening. Make themselves look smaller and less threatening. Hold themselves naturally, be calm and relaxed. Their tail, eyes, ears and mouth all held naturally and if their tail is wagging at all it will be at body level or lower. They will simply look confident and relaxed. Excited If your Golden is excited they will look happy but a little less relaxed, more tense and alert. An excited dog may be wagging their tail so much that their entire rear end will be moving and not just the tail. When excited, most dogs also bark in short high-pitched little barks. A play bow is when a dog drops into a position with their front legs stretched out in front of them, legs and chest low to the ground but with their bum held high in the air. They will usually emit a high-pitched and excited bark as well. They will usually have their mouth open, their eyes open and alert and their ears held forward and high as much as a golden can! Besides a play bow, a dog wanting to play will be full of energy, bouncing and jumping around while barking in a high pitch begging for attention. They will often paw people, or knock into them and run, hoping to be chased or played with in some way. Alert And Ready For Action An alert dog stands up tall, weight centered on all fours, staring at what has their attention with ears up and forward. Their tail will usually be still and held at body level or higher, their eyes somewhere between normal and wide open. An alert dog will look slightly intense and highly concentrated. Angry And Aggressive An angry and aggressive dog will make themselves look as large and scary as possible. If we had the time, we would show our dogs in AKC and UKC events, however, with running a ranch, homeschooling, caring for 2 epileptic children and so on, it just is not a priority to us to show. They are calm when required to be indoors and yet athletic when outdoors. Standard Poodles love to learn and they learn very quickly. They have wonderful temperaments and get along with just about everyone, yet, when they need to protect the ones they love they will not hesitate. Standard Poodles are labeled hypoallergenic, which means they shed very little and have minimal dander, therefore, they are able to be companions to most anyone who is allergic to animals. After all this IS a practical factor when deciding from whom and when to purchase a puppy. Puppies are handled daily from the moment of birth until the day they leave our family to join yours. Puppies are exposed to cats, horses, goats, chickens, cows at times and our other dogs daily and learn to get along with everyone. The Springer Clan home is an activity hub. Lots of noises, voices, movements, and crazy quads, lawn mowers, diesel engines, leaf blowers daily for dust on my porch , grooming vacuums and clippers, screaming children, and motorcycles constantly all around your new puppy. This exposes them to many sounds so that they are confident around loud situations. If you have ever been to our home, there is a smile on your face. Health: By the third day all puppies have their first examination, tails are docked and dew claws removed by my vet. We allow puppies to nurse as long as the mother remains healthy. This gives every puppy the best start in life. Every litter is protected from communicable diseases by allowing no one outside our family or those with deposits near them until one week after their first series of shots. All puppies are given a series of shots at 6 and 8 weeks of age. Every puppy is wormed before going home with their new family. Every puppy full price will be micro-chipped at 8 weeks of age Grooming: Since Poodles will be groomed their entire life, we begin at birth by getting them accustomed to being handled. At four weeks old puppies are introduced to the process of grooming by having their face and feet trimmed, and will be trimmed weekly thereafter. Training: We have children in our family and friends who regularly visit, and therefore all puppies are taught early on that jumping on and nipping at people is unacceptable behavior. At birth we begin neuro stimulation which increases brain activity and is proven to create the building blocks of smarter and more confident pups. By 4 weeks old we begin playing Puppy games during feeding time which teaches pups self control, patience, observance, and respect for human boundaries. Whining and unnecessary barking telling humans what to do is nipped in the bud quickly. We crate three puppies per large crate overnight. This allows them to feel comfortable with litter mates at their side and soon learn that crates are not a punishment but a haven. Sometimes it is just too hot for this and skip it! If rarely there are any pups remaining with me past 8 weeks old, we begin to crate them individually and work on leash — price goes up NOT DOWN, for this training…something to think about.
