Read More About Our Australian Labradoodles and their origin This classic example of logical and planned crossbreeding was created in the country of Australia in the s. The goal of the Australian clubs is to create a new "breed" with the best attributes of the original breeds. The original objective was to produce assistance dogs that do not shed hair for people with allergies. Australians, on the other hand, have taken the Labradoodle a few steps further. In mid it was announced that the Australian Labradoodle was not just a Labrador x Poodle cross , but was a breed in its own right developed over many years with particular goals in mind. To accomplish these goals, further development was done with parent breed infusions added to the already blooming Labrador x Poodle cross lines. The developers of the breed sought out the best way in which to compliment the Australian Labradoodle breed, and to develop the authentic qualities that they find and love in these dogs. In the very first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written which reflected these goals. The Australian Labradoodle currently consists of 6 different breeds in its origin. We truly believe our Australian Labradoodles are the best dog available and will make a great addition to your family. Conveniently located between Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago , we are here to help puppies find their forever home with your family. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for New York Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. What type of Golden Retrievers are sold in New York? We have some good news! Ready to make your Golden Retriever dreams come true? Take a look at our convenient list of available puppies. A golden retriever can be your friend, your jogging partner and a reason to smile and love daily in the hefty world. The golden retriever with gold hair on his or her body looks beautiful when playing in the lawn. But lately, a lot of people have shown interest and love for the Black Golden retrievers. Black retriever? Do the black golden retrievers even exist? Is black golden retriever is any different from the regular the golden retriever? How do they look? Do they share the same breed? How is it black? What are you talking about? Well, ladies and gentlemen, these kinds of questions I have been hearing for quite a time now, and I especially dedicated the today's article for you to tell you everything you need to know about the Black Golden retrievers. This article will help you get all the information regarding the black golden retriever breed and the ultimate answers to all of your questions. So, hold on your horses, turn off any distraction and get that chips packet and get right into the content, maybe this breed will be your next pet. Sounds great, doesn't it? It does, so let's find out about this mystery. What basically are the black Golden Retrievers? They share all the same characteristics, but they have that classic midnight shade. Black Golden Retrievers exist, yes for real, and they are same as intelligent and friendly as The Golden ones but have that glamourous black colour. I love the colour I hope you do too, so my love for black retrievers is exceptional. One of the reasons for the importance of the black Golden Retrievers is that they can surely be purebred. They are just black because of the genetic diversity factor which was added into their bloodline in the breed development processes. Major people think that a purebred black Golden Retriever is the outcome of a Flat-Coated bred Retriever that was used in the breeding process to make the Golden Retrievers. The black colour they have just becomes of the recessive gene that came up in the next litters. But, the Flat-Coated Retrievers are an entirely separate breed which is actually not wholly suitable for the first-time dog owners. The flat-coated retrievers have higher impulse and nature to wander than the pure Golden retriever, and they might have the need of more exercise daily. So comparing with all that, Black Golden retrievers are very easy to train, they have a relaxed nature that means they donk bark and irritate that much as compared to other breeds , and they will surely stick by and love your family. The physical differences There are quite a lot of physical differences between these two diverse breeds. Though, Flat-Coated Retrievers have a long and a wavy coat, which is nowhere close as thick as the Golden retriever's body. To describe to you an interesting fact, the Black Golden retrievers can be purebred, but they can never possibly perform in the show rings. The reason for that is the British, Canadian and American Kennel Club are very strict in the colouration requirements. The ultimate comparison of Black Golden retrievers with the Golden retrievers As a matter of fact, the Black Golden Retrievers are no any different than the old Golden Retrievers. The main difference is in their coating which is entirely black. The average Black Golden retriever can live for up to 12 maybe 13 years old and can have a height of 23—24 inches. The healthy Black retriever can weigh between 70 to 76 pounds. Most of its physical properties are like the Traditional Golden retrievers just the difference is in the colour and minor other differences. The Black Golden share the same temperament as the traditional Golden retrievers. That means if you are thinking to buy a puppy of this breed you will get an affectionate, lovely, friendly, and also a little bit goofy dog in your home. The traditional golden retrievers need consistent and many exercises. They have that tropical travelling nature. Same is with the Black Golden retrievers. The black or golden retriever is full of love, literally always but you have to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. The bad mood of your Golden or Black Retriever can result in the catastrophe of your new Nike sneakers, and no one wants that, so keep your dog happy and healthy. If you want a Golden Retriever but with an exciting and different coloured coating, then look no further as the Black Golden retriever is the dog you want. The share all those wonderful characteristics that the traditional golden retrievers have. This is the perfect family dog. The Black Golden retriever is also very sociable, that means you won't have a hard time to teach your dog to be social and well-mannered. The Black Golden retrievers are very patient, friendly and gentle. They play well with small children and are very excited to join their little adventures. So now you have discovered that the black golden retrievers are not much different than the traditional Golden retrievers and maybe you want this breed for your new pet. If you are interested and excited to get a Black Golden Retriever, you have to go to a dog breeder and the black golden retriever specialist to learn more about the breed and the guidelines to have better care. You will get a best friend for 12 years if your dog is guaranteed by the breeder to be healthy and you keep him or her healthy too. For that you have to find the trusted and well-reputed pet provider in your area, ask around in the family and friends, search online, visit and ask other people views about the pet specialist especially the Golden retrievers one. Make up your mind to take care properly of the new puppy because it will be no less than raising a baby. Provide a good environment for your Black Golden retriever puppy and raise him or her well to be very responsible, caring, well mannered and a good dog citizen. So what are you waiting for? Go and buy your new little best friend and enjoy the life. Need our help? Contact us, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. After you have chosen the right breed for you and your family, you have to look for a good pet store where you can buy your pup. It seems obvious that the health and happiness of your pet are most important, but you may be surprised by just how much this fact will impact how much your dog eats and how long it lasts. The first thing you need to know is that the price of a Black Golden Retriever puppy will always depend upon how many pups are in the litter, what color and type of pups are, and of course the breeder. Some things like color, pedigree and other characteristics of the dog will affect the price. The price of a Black Golden Retriever will always vary based upon the age and weight of the puppy and also its appearance. A puppy will also cost more than an adult dog. The more desirable the Black Golden Retriever breed, the more the puppies will cost. A Black Golden Retriever with a beautiful coat and a naturally active nature is going to be a better-looking puppy than a Black Golden Retriever with a rather dark coat and an inactive temperament. Of course, the price of a Black Golden Retriever puppy also depends upon the breeder that you buy from. Some breeders will charge more money for their puppies than others. Some other factors to consider when it comes to the cost of the Black Golden Retriever puppies are the size and weight of the puppy, how it is raised, and whether or not it is registered. A puppy that is smaller than other puppies or that has been born into a large family is likely to cost more money. Once you have determined the cost of a puppy then you can start to calculate what it would cost to take care of the puppy. A breeder will not always charge you the same price per month, which means that you should be able to get several quotes from different breeders. You may be able to negotiate a lower price on a puppy that you find at a lower price on a puppy that you find at higher price. Make sure that you take all of these factors into consideration when you are trying to determine what it would cost to raise a Black Golden Retriever puppy. Taking these factors into consideration will help you to determine what breed of puppy would be best for you and your lifestyle. When you have decided on what type of puppy you would like, you will also need to decide how you will feed it, and when you will feed it. When it comes to Black Gold Retriever puppies for sale, you want to be sure to get the most out of your money. Black Gold Retriever puppies for sale are usually bred from purebred Black Gold Retrievers and should be considered as such. When it comes to looking for these pets in the market, keep in mind that they should be in good health, and have good temperaments. This means that you need to have patience and make sure you have given them proper training. This way, you can compare different breeds and their prices and get the best bargain. Although there are many different sources where you can buy this kind of pet for less money, you should remember that these dogs need lots of love and attention if they are going to grow up well. The Internet is one of the most useful sources where you can get all the information you need about them. There are a lot of online breeders you can consult so it would be much easier for you to find a reputable breeder who can provide you with the right puppy for you. You just have to make sure that you choose a reputable breeder and that he has a lot of experience in dealing with them. As a buyer, you must look for a breeder that has a good reputation when it comes to his breeding of this kind of dog. Just keep in mind that the more information you know about these animals, the better you will be able to choose the right. But, you have to keep in mind that they are not cheap pets. So, if you are planning to buy or adopt one, you should invest. You need to save for the training of the dog, the medical expenses, and food and water. Aside from that, you also have to prepare for the future so that the pet can still enjoy living with you. When you are going to buy a dog, you have to take some time first to research and compare different breeders and other options. Black Golden Retriever Puppies For Sale cost depends on the breeder or dealer from whom you have bought the pup. It is a sad reality. Most breeders just want to sell their puppies to the highest bidder so that they will get the most amount of money possible. You also have to consider the cost of grooming, vaccinations, and other possible expenses when you choose to buy from a breeder. To prevent overspending, you have to find a breeder who offers good quality at a reasonable price. It is better if you can check the background of the pup since a good breeder would never sell a pup that is sick or has a serious illness. Also, you have to find the right breeder since you must be getting the right pup. You have to know what kind of personality traits your new pet has. The breeder must know what he is talking about. Black Golden Retrievers have their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Knowing them will help you to find a good pet for you and your family. Some pet experts suggest that you consider a breed if you have a friend with a golden retriever. Another option is to get a purebred from another source. However, it is up to you where you will get your pup from. It is important to note that breeding dogs can produce problems like birth defects or health problems. You have to be sure about the pedigree of the pup to avoid getting a sick pet. This is usually the easiest and fastest way to get your new pet. However, there are also pet stores that offer quality service and grooming services. It will be better if you choose one of these stores instead of shopping at your local pet shop since the latter may not offer you the best deal. In terms of grooming, you have to make sure that your breeder takes good care of its pups. You may ask the breeder to show you how to properly groom the pups. The best breeder will always be ready to provide information about the proper grooming of the dogs. Black Golden Retriever puppies can grow up to 16 inches in height, so you must get your pup from a breeder that can cope with such a breed. You can find a good pet store by visiting the Internet. The web will help you get the best possible deal on your Black Golden Retriever puppy. You may need to ask the breeder for advice regarding the purchase since this breed is quite difficult to sell. This information can be very useful when you finally decide to get your pet. Share this:.

Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. Just like any other Labrador, it will be important to dedicate their first few weeks in your home to getting them settled. Starting to work on important things like potty training and setting food habits. They really benefit from positive reinforcement training. Using rewards to help encourage them to behave in a way that will help them to fit nicely into your family. Start off with no more than a few minutes of formal exercise a day when they are small puppies. And work up to any big walks or runs very gradually over time so as not to accidentally hurt them. Did you turn up here hoping to learn about red fox Labs, only to find us referring to them as fox red instead? There are no consistencies in the way fox red Lab is spelled. Whether fox red is one word or two. Or whether the fox or the red comes first. Of course, we know fox red is much more special than that. At least it means you can spell it any way you like! I tend to say fox red Labrador, you can say redfox or red fox Labrador if it makes you happy. Ultimately they are all just gorgeous Labradors, with a darker shade to their yellow coat. So can you guess what some of these Golden Retriever mix breeds are known as before you get to them? Labrador Retriever Golden Retriever A. The Golden and Labrador Retriever breeds were both started in Scotland. They were bred by wealthy landowners who wanted dogs to fetch waterfowl and other game on shoots. Physically, and in terms of temperament, Labs and Goldens are very similar. So we can say with confidence that a Goldador will be a large dog weighing lbs. And they will have a thick double coat to protect them from cold winds and icy water. The length and color of their coat will depend on which parent they most take after. Both of their parents are athletic, intelligent and eager to engage with humans. So, Goldadors are sure to be too. Pitbulls have a divided reputation. Some people still associate them with blood sports and bad breeding. Whilst others champion modern Pitbulls for being soft, goofy, and loving. A Golden Retriever Pitbull mix is likely to be similar in size or a little smaller than a purebred Golden. Possible advantages of this hybrid are: A coat which is shorter and easier to manage than a purebred Golden. A playful, loyal, and affectionate temperament which is similar to a purebred Pitbull, but without the negative reactions Pitbulls often receive in public. However, they might also be prone to dog-directed aggression. So careful early socialization is vital. You can read more about the Golden Pitbull mix in our detailed review here. German Shepherd Golden Retriever A. Golden Shepherd German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are the 2nd and 3rd most popular purebred dogs in America, respectively. Goldens are famous for being friends with everyone. But German Shepherds have a long history as herding and guarding dogs. Golden Shepherds can take after either parent in this regard. Or sit somewhere in between. What you can be sure of is that their own unique personality will come inside a large lb dog, with a fabulous coat that sheds like nothing else. If their mixed breed offspring inherit it, they will have the same short Corgi legs. Corgis are another herding breed. So, Golden Corgi puppies might also have a strong herding instinct. This means they might chase smaller pets and even small children, and even nip at their ankles to round them up. You can find out more about owning and living with a Golden Retriever Corgi mix dog, here. But for very different reasons. Blue Heelers have short coats with distinctive speckling on a blue or red background. Golden Heelers can look more like either parent. There can even be very different looking puppies in a single litter. In terms of temperament, Goldens are clever. But Blue Heelers are ultra smart. So this Golden Retriever mix breed is likely to excel at obedience, field work, and other complex training activities. In fact, their need for mental stimulation can easily overwhelm a novice dog trainer. This mix is best suited to experienced trainers, with a lot of time for their dogs. Siberian Husky Golden Retriever A. Goldens and Huskies are both: similar in size athletic and love acting as hiking buddies and running companions easy going and affable and proud owners of thick, medium length, high-shedding coats. So Goberians will be reliably the same again. But whilst both breeds are intelligent, Huskies can be harder to train. Poodle Golden Retriever Poodle crosses are amongst the most desirable designer dogs, due to their non-shedding coat. Dogs produce allergens in their saliva, not their fur. Non shedding coats need to brushed several times a week, and clipped regularly. And finally, Goldendoodles can also inherit the shorter, shedding coat of their Golden parent rather than the non-shedding Poodle coat anyway. Coat aside, Poodles are another breed traditionally used for retrieving waterfowl. So, Goldendoodles are likely to be keen swimmers, and enthusiastic participants in training games. They might also be less confident around new people than a pedigree Golden, if their temperament takes after their Poodle parent. Miniature Poodle Golden Retriever A. Mini Goldendoodle The Golden Retriever is a large dog. One popular reason for breeding Golden Retriever hybrids is to harness some of their wonderful qualities in a more compact canine. Smaller dogs are attractive because they take up less space, need less food, and remain easier to pick up for their whole lives. They have similar pros and cons to standard Goldendoodles. But since Mini Poodles weigh less than 20lbs, mini Goldendoodles are often much smaller. You can find out more about their looks, health and temperament in this article. Golden Retriever Dachshund A. Like Golden Corgis, Golden Doxes may inherit a form of dwarfism from their Dachshund parent, giving them distinctive short legs. But, this long back is linked to an increased risk of painful intervertebral disc disease. Golden Retrievers and Longhair Dachshunds have similar coats. But of course, when they mix, the grooming needs of their puppies will be much smaller in scale compared to a pedigree Golden Retriever. Dachshunds can also have short- and wire-haired coats, which may be reflected in the coats of Golden Dox puppies. You can read more about their looks and health, as well as details about their personality, in our complete guide to Golden Doxes. Golden Retriever Chihuahua A. The tiny Chihuahua never weighs more than 6lbs in show condition. Although pet Chis might be a bit larger. Which still makes it barely one tenth of the size of a Golden Retriever! For this reason, Golden Chi litters are usually achieved by artificial insemination. The Golden Retriever should always be the mom, since carrying the puppies of such a large hybrid would be very dangerous for a Chihuahua dam. Chihuahua temperament is very different from Golden Retriever personality. Chis are one of the breeds alongside Dachshunds most likely to exhibit dog-directed and stranger-directed aggression. They are also prone to separation anxiety, and are very vocal. Golden Mountain Dog Whilst lots of Golden mix dogs are designed to capture the charm of a Golden Retriever in a smaller package, some people want the opposite — bigger Goldens! Bernese Mountain Dogs weigh up to lbs. So Golden Mountain Dogs are typically very large or even giant dogs. Berners are beloved for being placid, good natured dogs. Very large dogs are also more prone to joint diseases including hip and elbow dysplasia too. So only ever buy a puppy from health tested parents. Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel A. This mix has a lovely flowing coat. It often weighs between 40 and 50lbs, and combines two clever, trainable breeds. In the United States, Cocker Spaniels are companion dogs. But English Cocker Spaniels are still popular working dogs, and it shows in their intelligence and energy levels. For more information, visit us here. Golden Retrievers are enduringly popular dogs. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. The Golden is slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personality of a puppy until three to four years of age, which can be both delightful and annoying. Many keep their puppyish traits into old age. Originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other fowl for hunters, the Golden needs daily exercise : a walk or jog, free time in the yard, a run at the beach or lake Goldens love water , or a game of fetch. And like other intelligent breeds who were bred to work, they need to have a job to do, such as retrieving the paper, waking up family members, or competing in dog sports. A tired Golden is a well-behaved Golden. As well as giving your Golden Retriever physical and mental exercise , you should also be prepared to include him in your family activities. Golden Retriever Highlights Golden Retrievers shed a lot, especially during spring and fall. Brushing their coat daily helps remove loose hair, preventing it from spreading on your clothes and around your home. Living with a Golden means embracing their shedding. Golden Retrievers are active and require minutes of vigorous exercise every day. They enjoy obedience training, agility classes, and other dog activities that provide both physical and mental stimulation. While they are gentle and reliable around children, Golden Retrievers are large and exuberant, which might accidentally knock over small kids. Goldens have hearty appetites and can become overweight if overfed. Manage treats, measure their daily food portions, and feed them regular meals instead of leaving food out all day. Due to their popularity, some breeders prioritize profit over the well-being of the dogs. To ensure a healthy pup, avoid irresponsible breeders, puppy mills, or pet stores. Look for reputable breeders who test their breeding dogs for genetic diseases and focus on good temperaments. Golden Retriever History For many years, there was a legend that Golden Retrievers were descended from Russian sheepdogs bought from a circus. In fact, the breed was developed in Scotland, at the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later known as Lord Tweedmouth. Tweedmouth, like many gentry of his day, bred animals of all kinds, trying to perfect different breeds. He also wanted the dog to be loyal and even-tempered in the home. We'll explore the upfront price of purchasing a puppy and the routine costs associated with pet ownership. We'll also cover various factors that can impact the cost of a Lab and provide tips on how to reduce the cost of owning one. The cost of a Lab can vary depending on several factors such as its age, color, purpose show or field , whether it's a purebred, and more. Routine Care Expenses Owning a Labrador Retriever requires some routine care expenses, which should be taken into account when considering the overall cost of having a pet. One of the essential expenses is veterinary care, which includes routine check-ups, vaccinations, and emergency medical care. Labs are prone to specific health issues, such as hip dysplasia , eye problems, and skin allergies, which may require additional medical attention and expenses. Another routine care expense for Labs is feeding. As they are a somewhat larger breed, they require a substantial amount of food to maintain their weight and energy levels. Additionally, treats, chews, and supplements can also be added to their diet, increasing the overall cost of nutrition. Proper grooming and hygiene are essential to keep a Lab healthy and comfortable. Remember that training and behavioral classes may be necessary to ensure your Lab is well-behaved and socialized, which can also be costly. These expenses should be considered when determining if a Lab is the right breed for you and your budget. How much a Labrador Retriever puppy costs depends on multiple factors, such as the breeder's reputation, the location of the pup, the bloodline, and more. Additionally, the cost may increase if the puppy comes with additional services such as health certificates, microchipping , or first vaccinations. Your pup will also need feeding, grooming, and bathing factored into their expenses, as well as beds, toys, chews, leashes, collars, harnesses, and much more. Consider the following: Buying From a Breeder vs. While adopting a Lab may be less expensive, it is essential to note that some shelters may have restrictions and requirements that need to be met before adoption. However, buyers should be cautious and avoid buying from dishonest breeders who may be selling mixed-breed dogs as purebreds. Breeders Reputation Reputable breeders who prioritize health, temperament, and breed standards usually charge more for their puppies. It's crucial to research the breeder thoroughly and ensure that they follow ethical breeding practices before making a purchase. This includes checking their breeding practices, requesting health certificates and pedigrees, and visiting their facilities in person if possible. Buyers should also be cautious of breeders who offer extremely low prices, as that might be a sign of unethical practices. Estimated Size The estimated size of an adult Labrador retriever is around about .Average Price To Buy A Lab Puppy From A Breeder The average price to buy a Lab puppy from a breeder is different from one person to the next, according to the reputation the breeder has in the community, the dog's bloodline, and their location. Again, the color of the Lab plays a significant factor as well. In addition to the cost of the puppy, there are also other expenses associated with owning a Lab. This includes routine care costs such as food, toys, grooming supplies, and veterinary visits for vaccinations and check-ups. Owners should also budget for unexpected expenses such as emergency veterinary care or unexpected illnesses. Remember that a reputable breeder may charge more for their puppies, but they are more likely to provide you with a healthy, well-socialized puppy from a good bloodline. Average Cost To Adopt A Lab Puppy Adopting a Lab puppy is generally less expensive than buying one from a breeder, but the costs can still vary widely. However, it's crucial to research adoption agencies thoroughly to ensure that they are reputable and the dogs are healthy and well-cared for before making a decision. You don't want to bring a sickly pup into your home, just to end up spending more on medical bills than you had anticipated. However, the costs don't stop there. Once you have your furry friend, ongoing expenses include food, vet bills, grooming, and more. Labrador Retriever Breed Guide Labrador Retrievers are outgoing and generally have a friendly disposition toward others. They are loyal, affectionate and make excellent family pets. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which makes them great for first-time dog owners. Due to their friendly nature, they also make excellent therapy dogs and are often used in service roles. Labrador Retrievers generally come in three colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. The coat is short, dense, and water-resistant, which makes them excellent swimmers. Labs can be medium to large dogs that weigh about 55 to 80 pounds on average, with the males usually outweighing the females by ten pounds. Typically, they're around two feet tall inches , and the males will have about a one-inch height advantage over the females. The average lifespan for a Labrador Retriever is around 12 years, although some can live up to 14 years. They are all around healthy, but like all dogs, there are specific ailments that you're more likely to encounter with a Lab, like obesity, ear infections, and hip dysplasia. As for lifetime care costs, they can vary depending on factors such as food, vet bills, and grooming expenses. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Labrador Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog from a shelter is usually less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder. Typically, dog shelters will include initial vaccinations, any spaying or neutering services needed, along with essential veterinary care up front. That helps cut down on some of the initial costs that owners usually spend when they first bring a puppy home. However, it's not uncommon that breeders will also at least include the first vaccinations for the pup upon its release to your family. Another option to reduce the cost of owning a Lab is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may already be trained and require less attention and socialization than a puppy, which can save on training costs and time. Moreover, older dogs may have lower veterinary bills since they may not require as many check-ups or preventative care as a puppy. Finally, another way to save money on the lifetime costs of owning a Labrador Retriever is to invest in preventative care. This includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary check-ups to catch potential health issues early on. While preventive care may require an upfront investment, it can ultimately save money by avoiding expensive medical bills down the line. Final Thoughts: The Cost of Owning a Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds to own, but they can be somewhat high maintenance after you bring them into your home. A beautiful black Labrador Retriever dog Should you buy a Lab puppy or an older dog? There are pros and cons to buying both puppies and older Lab dogs. Labrador puppies are more expensive and require more vaccinations initially; however, older Labradors may have health issues or require intensive training to iron out negative habits. They are some of the cutest in the doggie kingdom. A Labrador Retriever is a large dog and this is going to cost more in the long run, than say, buying a Chihuahua. Large breed dogs like Labradors eat a lot, and this expense can be pretty significant, depending on the brand of dog food you buy. For instance, a Labrador Puppy will consume around pounds of dry puppy food a year, whereas an adult Lab will eat about pounds of food each year. That said, be sure not to overfeed your Labrador Retriever, as these food-obsessed dogs are prone to developing obesity. Dogs that are bred to be show or field-quality dogs can be significantly more expensive. How to find a reputable Labrador breeder and avoid puppy mills Be very wary of Lab puppy mills and backyard breeders when looking for your new dog. To this end, a Labrador dog that is too cheap should be seen as a red flag. A breeder who generally cares for their pet will undoubtedly charge more, but then you have peace of mind knowing that the parent dogs are happy and healthy and well looked after. These fees often already include spaying or neutering costs, vaccinations, and microchipping. These include the following: Two adorable yellow Labrador Retriever puppies staying warm 1. Purebred or mixed Labrador Retrievers are commonly mixed with other breeds to create interesting crosses like the Borador , Bassador , and Boxador. Parents that are champion or show quality dogs are going to produce more expensive puppies. Labrador dogs that have been specifically trained for specific roles like service dogs, guide dogs, and search and rescue dogs will also be more expensive than those destined for a life of leisure as the family pet. Labrador type Did you know there are two types of purebred Labradors? The most common pet Labrador is the American version, whereas English Labs are more common amongst show dogs. American Labradors are generally more athletic compared to the fluffy, broad-chested English Labs. Labrador puppies registered with the AKC are more expensive. Gender Female Labrador dogs will typically cost more than male Labs because they have breeding potential. That said, dogs that have already been spayed or neutered and are not bred for subsequent litters should cost around the same. These should include screenings for hip and elbow dysplasia as well as progressive retinal atrophy PRA. A DNA test for exercise-induced collapse is also sometimes performed. In addition, most reputable breeders will bear the costs of the first worming and vaccinations as well as tick and flea treatments and microchipping your pet. As mentioned, Labs are one of the most popular dog breeds, and being so in demand can push the price of puppies up, especially if you only have limited breeders where you live. Training and socialization Some breeders take the time to train and socialize their Lab puppies. There are grooming, exercise, food, training, and health care costs to consider. Do you have time for your Lab dog? Labs are not couch potatoes, especially when they are puppies. These dogs require active owners who can dedicate time to exercise and play with them. They need to be walked at least once a day and may also enjoy a good swim. Can you afford a Labrador dog? As mentioned, the cost of buying a Labrador dog is just the first step. There are many other factors to consider to keep your pet healthy and well-looked after. You need to keep these in mind when asking yourself if you can afford a pet. Labs, however, are very gentle dogs and so make excellent family pets when your kids get a bit older. What are great names for a Labrador Retriever? A good name should be easy to call and preferably just one or two syllables as it will be easier for your dog to learn. These names could include options like Max, Rover, Ace, or Buddy. Other popular Labrador Retriever names are inspired by coat colors such as night, shadow, onyx, or raven for a black Lab and sunny, blondie, goldie, or summer for a yellow lab. Conversely, chocolate Labs could go by the name Hershey, brownie, brandy, cookie, or muffin. Labrador Retrievers are some of the most loving, intelligent, and fun dogs out there. There is a reason why they are one of the most popular breeds in the world. That said, getting one of these puppies is a significant investment. If you can afford the cost of buying a Labrador Retriever and the monthly expenses that incur looking after a pet, then no doubt a Lab will be a fantastic addition to your home and possibly your most loved family member. The costs will be a bit higher at first while you get your dog the shots it requires and pay for the frequent visits to the vet. We also recommend getting your dog spayed or neutered unless you are a professional breeder, and it might even be required as part of your contract if you purchase from a breeder. Once your dog is an adult, it will not require as many vet visits and will only need booster shots every few years, so the average monthly costs will be much lower. Experts recommend getting all of the shots, but your dog is only legally required to get the rabies shot. We recommend purchasing a high-quality brand with real meat like chicken, turkey, or salmon listed as the first ingredient. The protein in meat will help build muscle and provide the energy your dog needs to stay healthy. High protein diets will also help your dog stay full longer, and it will be less likely to come looking for food. Foods with corn as the top ingredient are mostly empty calories that will leave your pet feeling hungry and looking for more food, potentially causing it to become obese. During the shedding seasons of spring and fall, you will likely need to increase the brushing to several times a week to help keep the fur off your furniture and floor. Professional grooming can also help with teeth brushing and nail clipping. This medication can also help prevent heartworm. Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable plans that you can adapt to your breed's specific needs. Many people forgo pet insurance, but it can be a great way to protect yourself from a huge expense while making sure your Labrador Retriever has the best healthcare possible. Accidents and serious illnesses can occur at any time, and many procedures can cost thousands of dollars which makes the price of insurance more than worth it, especially if you get it while your dog is still a puppy. It can chew up stuffed animals quickly, so they can get expensive, but there are plenty of options for a chewing dog, like the Lab. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Featured Image Credit: scott, Pixabay Contents. How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Less - The Labrador Retriever is a medium to large-sized , short-coupled, powerfully-built dog with a short, dense, water-resistant coat; small, drop ears; and a short, thick otter-like tail carried level with the back or with a slight upward curve. The length of body is equal to or only slightly longer than the height at the withers, and the distance from the elbows to the ground is equal to one-half the height at the withers. Balance, outline, intelligence, temperament and movement are of overriding importance. The Labrador Retriever is a breed of moderation, thoroughly sound, and willing and able to do its work. The Labrador Retriever is a dog without exaggeration, so light, weedy dogs; long, low-stationed dogs; and cloddy, lumbering dogs are to be equally penalized. The Labrador Retriever is an enthusiastic hunter with a good nose and a soft mouth. They excel in all performance activities. Another essential characteristic of the Labrador Retriever is the short, dense, double coat that protects the dog when retrieving from water. Labrador Retrievers are noted for their excellent temperaments. This breed is friendly, outgoing and eager to please. They are extremely intelligent and easily trained to perform a variety of complex tasks. These dogs were brought to England, probably on fishing boats. Originally black in color, the first recorded yellow Labrador appeared in a litter born in .Chocolates were also recorded at about the same time, but never achieved the same level of popularity as the blacks and yellows. Originally bred to retrieve from water, the modern Labrador Retriever has proven to be one of the most versatile breeds, excelling in hunt tests and field trials, in obedience and agility events, and also as service dogs. Your Labrador puppy will need a bed, collar, leash, poop bags, food bowls, food, treats, toys, grooming supplies, and a dog crate. It is important to get any dog licensed to avoid legal issues. Training Labrador Retrievers are easy to train and do not require professional training. But, some keepers choose to take their Lab to puppy school. Because they are highly motivated, Labradors also do great in agility training. This is also a great way for them to use up their energy. Owners can either build their own agility course or pay to put their dog in agility classes. Vet Fees and Insurance One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is all the vet visits. This includes all of their shots and monthly checkups. A way to help reduce the cost of veterinary bills is through buying pet insurance. It is best to start paying for a pet insurance policy when your Labrador is a puppy. Senior dogs are more expensive to cover since they are more likely to develop health problems. Food When it comes to feeding a Labrador, they are not cheap. Labradors eat a lot of food. They are medium to large-sized dogs and weigh around 70 pounds. These prices are based on feeding a high quality kibble. Wet food can easily cost several hundred dollars more. Backyard Breeders One important thing every potential owner should remember is to avoid backyard breeders and pet shops. It is true that these places sell dogs for a much lower price. But, that does not mean they will be cheaper over their lifespan. Backyard breeders do not screen their dogs to determine if they have inheritable health problems. This results in Lab puppies being born that are more likely to develop health issues such as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. These breeders also do not provide proper veterinary care for their puppies. Many are sold while having worms or fleas and having received no socialization. Ethical Labrador breeders ensure their breeding stock is screened and their puppies are healthy and socialized before placing them into their new homes. Labrador Retrievers can develop diseases of the eye. The form of this disease that is very common is Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration. Caused by an inheritable genetic mutation, it ultimately leads to blindness. Screening will help to prevent you from buying a puppy that may become blind later on in life. Dogs with this disease will lose their sight between one and eight years of age. Hip and Elbow Scores Another health problem that Labradors are prone to is hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a genetic skeletal disease that causes the hip joint to not form properly. This results in the femur grinding against the hip causing deterioration and loss of function. Many Labradors with this condition end up having to undergo surgery to reduce pain and regain function in their hips. The average hip score for a Labrador retriever is 12, so any score below that is considered good. Ideally, good breeders will only breed dogs with hip scores under .This will prevent you from purchasing a Labrador puppy that will require expensive surgery later on in its life. Purpose American Labradors are best suited for active families. Families that enjoy activities such as swimming, running, and hiking. They are great for families with older children who can engage and play with them more. American Labs would also do best with owners who can dedicate more time to them because they require a lot of exercise every day. People who work from home or part time would be ideal. English Labradors would make great pets for quieter families because they have a calmer personality. They are also gentler and would do well with a family that has young children. Since they are less active, they are suitable for a busier family who has less time to exercise them. Their docile, patient attitude also makes them excellent candidates to be service dogs so they would be a great dog for people who need one in their life. Summary The price of a Labrador can vary depending on if you get one from a breeder or rescue. Its color, pedigree and health will also influence the price. All Labradors are prone to health conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and hip or elbow dysplasia. Make sure the breeder screens for these health conditions before breeding. This will help to ensure your puppy is healthy. The cost to keep a Labrador healthy, exercised and happy can get pricey. But, if an owner has done their research and prepared themselves, then Labradors make an excellent addition. What Lab do you prefer? American, English, or mixed? Let us know!
