German Shepherd Behavior Problem 3: Nipping and Biting The third most common issue I come across with this breed is biting and nipping, especially with adolescent German Shepherds that are around 6 or 7 months of age. Here are some ways you can follow to prevent this problem from escalating! German Shepherds are big dogs, so this issue might seem scarier with this breed. I totally understand that. Make it clear from the get-go that biting hands, arms, legs, etc. And for those of you that are wondering, nipping and biting should really stop at or before 4 months of age. Provided the breeder has a reason to produce this cross, and a genetic, health, temperament, or function goal driving the mating. Provided the breeder has done all the health checks relevant to a labrador, and all the health checks relevant to a poodle. Provided the breeder understands the science of genetics and the varying possibilities of how labrador genes interplay with poodle genes, especially recessive gene combinations. Provided the breeder understands assessment for temperament, in both the labrador and poodle, and whether the individual temperaments of the two parents make each a fit candidate for breeding. Provided the breeder has a well thought out and early development program for the puppies. Provided the breeder has sought potential buyers prior to the sale and vetted those buyers carefully, so that there is no chance any of the pups end up homeless. Provided the breeder truly understands all issues around coat allergies, seeks to educate buyers about what one might expect and what one cannot expect - and requires that any potential buyer who suffers from allergies be thoroughly tested with the individual puppy, and again once the dog is an adult. Then calling it a silly name and charging a premium of thousands. If your dog is running loose, they are in danger of being hit by a car, injured in a fight with another dog, or hurt in any number of other ways. You're also liable for any damage or injury your dog may cause, and you may be required to pay a fine if they are picked up by an animal control agency. To prevent escapes, you'll need to find out how your dog is getting out of the yard, and more importantly, why they are so determined to get out. Why dogs escape Your dog may be escaping because they are bored and lonely, especially if: They are left alone for long periods of time without opportunities for interaction with you. Their environment is relatively barren, without playmates or toys. They are a puppy or adolescent under three years old and don't have other outlets for their energy. They are a particularly active type of dog like the herding or sporting breeds and need an active "job" in order to be happy. They visit places after each escape that provide them with interaction and fun things to do. For example, they may go play with a neighbor's dog or visit the local school yard to play with the children. Recommendations: Expand your dog's world and increasing their "people time" in the following ways: Walk your dog daily. It's good exercise, both mentally and physically for both of you!
