The study also identifies the most common disorders recorded in the breed, showing that some of these, such as otitis externa and periodontal disease, occur at levels typical of dogs overall while others, such as epulis and corneal ulceration, are quite breed predisposed. There was only limited evidence for important health differences between the sexes and very little evidence supporting reduced health in white Boxers. With an overall median longevity of .This study highlights the value of Big Data resources such as VetCompass to provide breed health profiles that can support improved health plans for individual breeds. In the same year, Boxers comprised 1. This higher proportion among the registered pedigree dogs is expected, given that the wider canine population also includes designer crossbreeds, mixed breeds and other breeds of dog that are not registered with or recognised by The Kennel Club. There were no statistically significant demographic differences between males and females except for bodyweight. Mean bodyweight for males .This mirrors the sexual dimorphism encoded in the breed standard, which suggests a male bodyweight of 30—32 kg and a female bodyweight of 25—27 kg [ 4 ]. Gene mapping has shown a shared genetic mutation for the white colour in Boxers and Bull Terriers, and white colouring has been linked to congenital deafness for over a century [ 26 , 27 ]. For this reason, white Boxers have long been considered undesirable by breeders and historically were often culled [ 28 ]. Consequently, little reliable information has been available until now on the proportion of white dogs within the Boxer breed or on associations of white colour with deafness and other health problems in the wider population. In a study in the Netherlands in —5, .However, changing attitudes towards such large-scale culling among pedigree dogs now mean that more white Boxers are sold as pets and fewer are euthanized as puppies. A more recent study in Italy reported that .In the current VetCompass study, .This lower UK proportion of white Boxers could reflect a genuine difference in allele frequency between different national dog populations or might indicate some ongoing level of neonatal culling of white dogs in the UK. For comparison, The Kennel Club registration data for all Boxers recorded as born between and identified that 6. Although these Kennel Club data refer to births during these years rather than to the adult population that was reported in the VetCompass data, this even lower figure could reflect ongoing reluctance by breeders to register non-standard white dogs, particularly if they perceive these puppies as deaf or likely to be deaf. An alternative explanation could be that genetic mutations for white dogs are genuinely more common in the wider non-Kennel Club population of Boxers in the UK. The current study also failed to show any predisposition for deafness in the white Boxers. This may reflect previous culling of fully deaf dogs to mainly leave white Boxers with at least unilateral hearing in the living population. An alternative explanation could be that some of these living white Boxers were indeed deaf but that neither the owner or veterinary teams were aware of their deafness, which can be challenging to identify, or that this information was not recorded in the clinical notes [ 30 ]. Disorder prevalence Neither males versus females, nor white versus non-white Boxers differed statistically in their annual disorder counts, suggesting little or no overall health differences between these categories of dog. The two most prevalent disorder groups both overall and in each sex were skin disorder overall .There is a long and deep literature worldwide on predispositions to a range of neoplasia in Boxer dogs based on data sources including referral veterinary records [ 31 ], post-mortem studies [ 32 ], histopathology sample analyses [ 33 ], cancer registries [ 34 , 35 ] and mortality studies [ 36 ]. The current study provides further supporting evidence of cancer predisposition in Boxers that is based on primary-care veterinary data. At a disorder group level, .The evidence for a cancer predisposition in the current study also supports the choice of Boxer dogs as comparative oncology models for translational research to better understand the origins of cancer and translate these findings to novel therapies, in line with the thinking of the team that chose the Boxer for the first full genomic sequencing in dogs [ 13 , 41 ]. Delving deeper into health differences between the sexes, there were differences detected for some disorders at both grouped and fine levels of analysis. For example, at the grouped level, females were almost three times more likely than males to be diagnosed with a urinary system disorder: a difference that reflects an even more marked sex difference at the fine level of analysis, where females were almost eight times more likely than males to be diagnosed with urinary incontinence. This female predisposition for urinary incontinence in Boxers concurs with the relative risk of over 3 times for females compared to males that has previously been recorded in dogs overall in the UK [ 42 , 43 ]. At the grouped disorder level, females were also significantly more likely than males to be diagnosed with mass lesion and dental disorder, while at the fine level of disorder, females were 1. However, despite this sex predisposition, the prevalence of 5. This relative protection is also reflected in other brachycephalic breeds such as the French Bulldog and English Bulldog [ 45 , 46 ]. Paradoxically, it is possible that the open mouthed breathing, dental malocclusion, mandibular prognathism, drooling and widely spaced teeth seen in many Boxers and other brachycephalic breeds, which have been considered problematic for over seventy years, are nevertheless somehow protective against gingivitis: perhaps by reducing food trapping and by increasing saliva flow [ 9 ]. At the fine level of diagnostic precision, males were 2. Given that behavioural disorder was also the fourth commonest cause of mortality in this male cohort and showed the lowest median age of death, this suggests that behavioural problems, particularly aggression and especially in males, may have a significant impact on the welfare of Boxers and the people they live with, which potentially merits further attention [ 47 ]. This finding further corroborates reports of relatively high levels of aggression in Boxers compared to otherwise behaviourally similar dogs, identified via large-scale analysis of C-BARQ data on over 32, dogs in the USA [ 48 ]. However, although the 2. This wide variation in the prevalence of aggression both between breeds, and also between sexes within breeds, suggests that improved information on behavioural and temperament attributes of individual breeds is needed to help to owner make appropriate decisions when selecting breeds as companion and family dogs. At the fine level of disorders, males were also statistically more likely than females to be diagnosed with heart murmur, with a male prevalence of 4. Although heart murmur was the fifth most commonly recorded fine-level disorder overall, it jumped to the fourth most common fine-level disorder in males compared to only the ninth most common in females. While specific individual cardiological diagnoses, such as aortic stenosis and atrial septal defects, which can cause murmurs, have been recognised for many years as breed health concerns in Boxers, many true cases of these conditions in typical primary care caseloads may not be clinically worked up to this level of diagnostic precision [ 14 ]. Supporting the idea that clinical signs are often used in lieu of formal biomedical diagnoses in general veterinary care, previous work within VetCompass has reported that while just 0. Nevertheless, the finding that heart murmurs are recorded more frequently in Boxer males is consistent with previous research that reported a male predisposition for both aortic and pulmonic stenosis in Boxers [ 51 ]. In addition to some disorder predispositions where the prevalence in Boxers is higher than in other types of dogs, the current study also highlights that the Boxer also has some disorders with concerningly high prevalence that are similarly common in dogs that are not Boxers. Although otitis externa was the most prevalent fine-level precision disorder in Boxers 7. None the less, it could be argued that the high frequency of otitis externa is suggestive that this disorder should be considered as a key health priority for the Boxer. There has been a tendency for many decades to focus breed health reforms on predispositions within breeds or on disorders where there is a genetic or other diagnostic test available, no matter how rare the actual disorders are, rather than on also considering common disorders that may not even have a predisposition [ 14 ]. It may be that veterinary and breeding communities need to give greater future emphasis in breed health plans to the sum of the health and welfare impacts at an overall breed level so that these health schemes truly deliver health and welfare gains at a population level. However, that said, many of the most frequently reported fine-level disorders in the current study do show the double welfare impact of both high prevalence and high breed predisposition which marks these as very strong candidates for consideration as key disorder priorities for Boxers. Strong historical support for these disorders as breed-related problems in Boxers only further supports their prioritisation. Predisposition of Boxers to dental epulis also known as peripheral odontogenic fibroma or fibromatous epulis of periodontal ligament origin has been recognised since at least the s [ 52 ]. More recently, this predisposition has been highlighted in a UK owner survey [ 53 ], in Swedish insurance data [ 14 ] and in UK diagnostic laboratory data [ 54 ]. In the current study, epulis was the second most prevalent fine-level disorder in both sexes, with an overall prevalence of 5. As the third most common disorder in Boxers in the current study, with a prevalence of 5. Conformational predisposition to corneal ulceration among dogs with brachycephaly has been recognised for over a century [ 55 ] with a breed-specific problem of non-healing indolent corneal ulceration formally described in Boxers in the s [ 56 ]. Previous VetCompass work on corneal ulceration across multiple breeds identified the Boxer to have the second highest breed prevalence of corneal ulceration 4. Such a high prevalence and predisposition for a painful condition that is linked to extreme body conformation suggests a very strong rationale for prioritising this condition within reforms that could include breeding towards conformational moderation to improve innate health in the breed [ 14 , 57 ]. To build on this concept of evaluating disorder prioritisation within breeds based on both prevalence and predisposition, the current work also highlighted a relatively high prevalence for hypothyroidism, which affected 1. Although this was only around one third of the prevalence for corneal ulceration, previous VetCompass work has reported the Boxer breed with the third highest prevalence of hypothyroidism and to have over 10 times the risk compared with crossbred dogs [ 17 ]. This comparison between corneal ulceration and hypothyroidism in Boxers highlights that even when a breed is highly predisposed to a certain disorder, a more prevalent disease leads to a higher disease burden and therefore may be considered as having a greater breed welfare impact. Other factors such as the duration and the severity of each disorder should also be considered with making decisions about breed health prioritisation [ 58 ]. There is growing awareness that identification of disorders that are protected against may also offer useful information for breed health plans. For best effect, studies that identify protections should include clinical data on both the breed of interest as well as on a wider comparator group e. To date, such comparative studies have been reported for breeds including French Bulldog [ 45 ], Pug [ 59 ], English Bulldog [ 46 ], Labrador Retriever [ 49 ] and Staffordshire Bull Terrier [ 60 ]. However, although the current study included only results on Boxer dogs, it is still possible to identify some evidence on disorder protections by comparing the current results to prevalence data on dogs overall that were derived from the same VetCompass data source [ 22 ]. By comparing the current results to the prevalence values for dogs overall in the UK, there was some evidence to suggest protection in Boxers to periodontal disease prevalence 4. Boxers are widely regarded as a breed with a moderately brachycephalic head shape [ 4 ]. However, current research increasingly draws nuanced distinctions between the typical attributes and pathologies from the brachycephalic conformation across different breeds in dogs [ 62 - 64 ]. Despite the strong predisposition in Boxers to corneal ulceration, which is typical for the brachycephalic conformation, it is important to consider whether every disorder predisposition linked to brachycephaly will also show predisposition in the Boxer. Brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome BOAS is widely considered as a common disorder in dogs with extreme brachycephaly [ 65 , 66 ]. It is therefore, somewhat surprising that the current Boxer study reveals an unexpectedly low grouped level prevalence for upper respiratory tract disorder of only 3. The relatively higher craniofacial ratio muzzle to overall skull length ratio of the Boxer compared to more extreme brachycephalic breeds Boxer: 0. Pug: 0. Other predispositions that are recorded in dogs overall with brachycephaly but that had lower relative prevalence in Boxers included umbilical hernia, pododermatitis, patellar luxation and anal sac impaction [ 64 ]. These results highlight the dangers of ecological fallacy whereby the disorder risks of a group e. One aim of the current study was to investigate the health of white Boxers compared to non-white Boxers. The Kennel Club breed standard currently excludes white dogs, which have long been anecdotally considered to have an elevated risk of congenital sensorineural deafness and, possibly, other diseases [ 4 , 28 ]. However, despite this, very little empirical research has been reported on the incidence of congenital sensorineural deafness in Boxers. One small study in Brazil carried out brainstem auditory-evoked response BAER testing on 43 Boxers, of which 14 were white, showing that two white dogs were bilaterally deaf and one was unilaterally deaf, while all the non-white dogs had normal hearing [ 7 ]. However, as those authors pointed out, the study sample size was too small to draw meaningful statistical conclusions. Another approach here is to extrapolate results from Bull Terriers, which have the same genetic cause for colour-related deafness as Boxers [ 6 , 7 ], but have been studied in more detail, with these studies benefitting from a higher proportion of white dogs among Bull Terriers because white dogs are allowed within The Kennel Club breed standard [ 4 ]. When divided by colour, .Although these data refer to Bull Terriers, all other things being equal, a similar prevalence of deafness should be expected in white Boxers, given the common underlying cause. Alternatively, the true proportion of deaf white dogs in the adult dog population may be low because culling as a default decision among breeders may still be common in the UK [ 28 ]. Overall, the current study identified only weak evidence for any significant difference in health between white and non-white Boxers. None of the 34 fine-level disorders showed prevalence differences between white and non-white Boxers while just two of the grouped-level disorders differed, with white Boxer having higher prevalence of brain disorders and enteropathy. Given the multiple testing of 66 individual tests across the fine-level and group disorders, it would not be unexpected for two tests to return false positive type I errors, so even these two findings should be treated with caution [ 70 ]. An absence of wider health differences between white and non-white Boxers apart from hearing issues is not surprising because, despite the long-standing prejudice against white colour in this breed, the causative mutation is not generally thought to be linked to health problems other than congenital deafness [ 71 ] and vulnerability to sunburn as in all animals with little pigmentation [ 72 ]. Mortality The median age at death for Boxers in the current study was .The longevity of Boxers reported here is shorter than the median of .Therefore, these results do not suggest that the longevity overall of Boxers is particularly shorter than might be expected for a pure breed of this body size. This is especially noteworthy given that there is strong evidence that extreme brachycephaly is linked to substantially shortened lifespan [ 74 ]. It may be that the moderate rather than extreme degree of brachycephaly alone of many Boxers does not impose meaningful lifespan reductions on this breed, which does not show extreme conformation in other parts of the body [ 4 ]. Among the common causes of mortality, four disorder groups were identified with markedly earlier ages at death than the overall mean age of .Given these early deaths, it could be considered that these disorders exert an important impact on Boxer health and welfare. It is noteworthy that of these, neoplasia and renal disease map onto two priority health concerns reported by the breed community, cancer and juvenile kidney disease [ 14 ]. Given the strong prior evidence base on predisposition to neoplasia in Boxers [ 32 , 36 , 75 ], the current findings of high rates of mortality from neoplasia are not surprising. However, even these may be a substantial underestimate of the true overall neoplasia mortality as, in addition to the .There were no differences detected between male and female for disorders as a cause of mortality, but white Boxers showed evidence of higher probability of death related to brain disorder and enteropathy than non-white Boxers. Despite the possibility of false positive findings in the current study, given the neurological component to the aetiological pathway for sensorineural deafness linked to white colour in dogs [ 71 ] and given the increased prevalence for brain disorder as a grouped disorder already reported in the current study, further work on an association between white colouration and neurological disorders is warranted. This study had some limitations in addition to those previously reported for the application of veterinary primary-care clinical records as a research resource [ 19 , 22 ]. The current study aimed to report the annual prevalence of common disorders in Boxers and therefore did not extract information about the date of first diagnosis, which would have allowed additional reporting of annual incidence. Additionally, information was not extracted on the severity or duration of these disorders, which would have been needed for a fuller evaluation of the welfare impact [ 58 ]. The current study reported results from multiple analyses so there are risks of false positive findings type I error as discussed above [ 76 ]. There was minimal evidence of noteworthy health differences between male and female Boxers, or between white and non-white Boxers. Among the four most common disorders recorded in Boxers, two are typically common across all types of dogs otitis externa and periodontal disease while two showed strong predisposition in the Boxer breed epulis and corneal ulceration , suggesting the value of understanding breed-specific disorder patterns to offer insights for potential health interventions. The overall longevity of Boxer dogs was consistent with dogs of other breeds of similar body size. Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. Until , the mainstay of treatment for GC involved immunosuppression with agents such as corticosteroids and azathioprine, in combination with antibiotic therapy and dietary change. Responses to treatment were generally poor, frequently resulting in euthanasia. GC became considered an incurable, immune-mediated disease. Fluorescent labeling enables clear visualization of bacterial morphology and spatial localization against a busy background of severe inflammation. This pathotype has been named 'adherent invasive E. Routine clinicopathologic testing is usually unremarkable, but may reveal mild to moderate anemia due to chronic disease, or hemorrhage if hematochezia is very severe. The degree and chronicity of blood loss in GC can cause iron deficiency anemia, with microcytic and hypochromic erythrocytes. Hypoalbuminemia can also occur due to hemorrhage, protein exudation, anorexia, and inflammation negative acute phase protein. Articles People often have mixed feelings when it comes to Bulldogs. Some think of them as furious and grim, while people who own a Bulldog know what a lovely companion they are! The American Bulldog is a well-adjusted muscular dog that is energetic, strong, and friendly. American Bully is a successor of the English Bulldog , who was bred to work on fields. However, black is not the correct color for an American Bulldog. Traditionally, American Bulldogs are often white with patches of red, brindle, and black. Apart from mixed shades of white, this dog breed also comes in other colors, including all-white, black, and chocolate. But yes, American Bulldogs can be all-black. Black is among the other four rare colors for these Rocky Bullies. Regardless of appearance, Bulldogs are excellent domestic canines. Before you drive down to get one, let us discuss things that will help you raise your Bully right. This breed reaches a weight of 70 to lbs for males and 60 to lbs for females as they enter adulthood. If you own an average-sized yard, you can easily exercise your medium to large-sized American Bully in your home without taking them out for a walk on busy days. Physical Appearance Black American Bulldogs are rocky, strong, and have a long back that makes them look very upright. Bullies usually stand 2 feet at the shoulder and have a much-positioned body structure. Since Bullies were originally bred to work on farms, they have big heads with powerful jaws. Their ears may be uncropped, rose, drop, semi-prick, or cropped. They have dark brown eyes, round or almond-shaped. Bulldogs have an erect tail, thick at the base, that gradually thins out at the top. Coat Color And Pattern The characteristic black coat on the Black American Bulldogs is due to a certain pigment called eumelanin, whose production depends on the B locus in the cells. These Bullies are black because these expressed B genes are dominant. Black American Bulldogs have varieties of coats that may be solid or patterned. Their black coats are soft and short-haired. They may contain patterns of black, brindle, fawn, or red color on their coat. Image from Instagram: lola. Bullies are a working breed, so obviously very healthy. Exercising is crucial to keep the pooch healthy. While they are comfortable indoors, physical activity is not to be compromised. They are robust and active, so playing outdoors helps them stay healthy and live even longer. However, there are some common health issues of Bulldogs that you may face if not given proper care. Obesity Black American Bulldogs are brachycephalic dog breeds that have shorter snouts, thereby making it harder for them to breathe well. So, obesity will make it hard for your furry friend to breathe. Lack of exercise will make them prone to being overweight. Hip Dysplasia If Black American Bulldogs have been overweight since childhood, they are more likely to develop hip dysplasia in adulthood. In this, the hip joint grows abnormally and becomes weaker. Overheating Black American Bulldogs are not very habitable to humidity and heat. When you are walking or exercising your canine outdoors on a warm day, keep an eye for signs and symptoms of overheating. If you encounter such a situation, lie down your doggie in a cooler place. You can also buy a small pool for your Bully to help them beat the heat. Unlike humans, dogs have three eyelids to protect their eyes. In certain conditions, the third eyelid gets irritated and protrudes. Cherry eye is not an emergency but can be concerning if ignored for a long time; therefore, consult a vet sooner. Your Black American Bully needs at least an hour of exercise every day to stay healthy and away from health issues like obesity and hip dysplasia. Bulldogs have strong muscles, and to maintain them, your Fido requires good playtime each day along with a high-quality diet to increase their life expectancy and keep fit. However, lack of exercise will lead to problems mentioned below: Heart diseases Hip dysplasia Obesity On the contrary, a good exercise routine will help your canine friends in the following ways: Better functioning organs Improved brain function Quality of sleep You can take your four-legged buddy on a good min walk to help them maintain their strong muscles. Some other fun activities are fetching, jolly ball, Frisbee, tug-of-war, and dog toys. High-Quality Diet For Bullies, diet is a vital factor in keeping their muscular body intact. The ideal meal for a Bully can be 2 to 3 cups per day. The high-quality food should be given in two meals. However, the amount of food your canine eats also depends on his activity level, age, and metabolism. The ideal diet of a Bully must consist of carbs, protein, good fats, minerals, and multivitamins. To make sure that your Fido gets all the essentials, you can also get a nutritious Pet Plate for them. For better oral hygiene of your Bully, you can use dental water additives. Such traits are likely to be inherited from generations since these Bullies were bred to perform farm works such as baiting or herding, where dominance comes in handy. Younger bullies are more aggressive than older ones; they bite, nibble, and chew things they should not. But take this normal, it will get better as they grow old. However, to promote a stable and calm temperament, early socialization is mandatory. Separation Anxiety Just like other doggies, Black American Bulldogs suffer from separation anxiety too. Without the proper training, these pooches cannot be left alone for more than 6 hours. When they do, they can become destructive. In terms of destructive behavior, Black American Bulldogs can exhibit chewing of furniture or barking tendencies. As Bullies are companion dogs, they will need lots of attention and play-time. Consider setting them up with a professional sitter or dog daycare center in your absence. Image from Instagram: onyxtheblackamericanbulldog Quick-Learners Black American bulldogs are eager learners and consistent. They can be dominating, so training is necessary to teach them obedience. Hyperactive Black American Bulldogs are hyperactive up to the age of 4 to 5 years. It can get difficult to calm them as all they want is to play and run around. You can provide them with calming chews to compose them. Female Black Bullies are more active and aggressive as compared to male ones. However, plenty of energy is a healthy sign, and you can always use treats or training to wind down. All in all, Black American Bullies are best owned by owners with an active lifestyle and love having an athletic companion for hunting, farming, or protection. Naturally, they are calm, and their behaviors toward strangers fluctuate from friendly to aloof. All these Bullies are vigilant guardians and live for their owners. Do Black American Bulldogs Shed? Factors such as climate, diet, and skin conditions also contribute to their shedding. These Bullies have short coats that do not require excessive grooming. Also, puppies tend to shed more hair, but their shedding levels will reduce as they mature to become adults. Black American Bulldogs are not hypoallergenic. These purebred pooches produce a high amount of allergens. Therefore, people sensitive to allergies must avoid being in proximity. Brush The Coat Twice Or Thrice Per Week You can brush your Fido 2 to 3 times a week to get rid of all the dead hair that may lead to skin problems if not cleaned properly. Brush for at least 10 minutes every three days to maintain a healthy coat. To make things less hectic, you can use the FURminator Undercoat Tool , which helps in removing the deadhead from the undercoat without hurting your pooch. It is safe and effective in reducing shedding with regular use. Removes loose hair: reaches through the topcoat to remove loose undercoat hair without cutting skin or damaging the.FURejector button: just push the button to release hair with ease. Do not delay bathing your canine for more than six weeks, or it will start smelling bad. Before bathing, use a dryer to loosen dirt, dander skin, and dead hair from their coat. Use a high-quality shampoo for bathing your Bully. This shampoo is hypoallergenic and soap-free, so completely safe for your pooch. Other Grooming Tips Use a hydrating spray to keep the coat moisturized after bathing your Bully. Brush their teeth daily. The price may vary from different places to breeders, but you get a fully screened doggie for temperament issues and health. Bullies are not the most expensive to own. However, purebred puppies may cost you more as they are pricey to breed. Do Black American Bulldogs Swim? No, a Black American Bulldog cannot swim because of their short snouts due to brachycephaly; it is difficult for them to keep their head out of water. Make sure to use a life vest for your furry friend whenever they are near water sources to avoid the risk of drowning. On average, this tiny pooch can weigh between 10 to 20 lbs for females and 11 to 22 lbs for males, and it is no wonder that it is often called a Miniature Pit Bull. A Pocket Bully is a designer dog and, therefore, very expensive. You can carry this tiny muscular canine in your bag easily. Photo from: nobilisabs Thanks to some genetic acrobatics, the black American Bulldog deviates from the usual breed colors and patterns. Although most other combinations involve at least ten percent white coverage, the black American Bulldog is completely black. Since all of the color combinations involve some white markings, a solid black coat in the American Bulldog really catches the eye. There is a possibility of expressing some markings on the chest, neck, between the eyes, and the paws, but our interest is in the solid black version. Males are between twenty-two and twenty-five inches tall and weigh seventy-five to one hundred pounds. Females reach weights of sixty to eighty pounds and grow anywhere between twenty and twenty-three inches in height. With a body length that barely exceeds its height, the American Bulldog carries a lot of muscle and has thick bones. American Bulldog puppies can often be overfed due to their immense appetite, so tracking their progress is key. Consider using an American Bulldog growth chart to see if your pup is within the healthy range of weight and height. Although it is related to the English Bulldog, it is significantly taller and more substantial in mass. The athletic body of an American Bulldog was designed for work, so the head is wide, with a muzzle proportionate to it. The small to medium triangular ears are spread wide and hang facing forward. When alert, they are level with the eyebrows or just under the eyebrow line. A strong reverse-scissor bite is possible thanks to a moderately thick neck that connects to well-developed shoulders and a deep-seated chest. The feet and leg bones are perpendicular to the ground without any arching. There is a slight tuck of the loin that accentuates the muscular hind legs. The back is straight except for a small slant at the lumbar spine lower back. The only thing that did not change was the Bulldog part. When it comes to differences, they are mainly in physical appearance, but the temper is slightly different too. The Scott type has thinner bones, less muscle mass, and is of a slightly smaller body frame. A Johnson type will have a wider skull, shorter muzzle, and more pronounced stop. This type was preserved as a working dog, so it makes sense that it is the more powerful of the two. The Scott type is considered a show dog due to its more elegant silhouette. Differing Aspirations In terms of temperament, both dogs have the same protective instincts and unwavering loyalty and affection for the family. They are the utility dog for any home with farm work to be done. The color for the Johnson type is far less important as long as it does not affect its working ability. Although both types are admirable working dogs with great strength, the bully dog is preferred for people who own cattle and need protection from wild animals, with the Scott type being the more popular choice as a family pet. Keep in mind that many a modern American Bulldog is the product of these two separate lines that makes them American Bulldog mixes. If you like stories of breed lineages that result in subtle variations in physical appearance and temperament, I recommend you read our articles on Gator and Razor Edge Pitbulls. Coat And Grooming Both types have the same smooth, short coat that requires almost no effort to groom. The quality of the coat can be soft or stiff, with the latter being more common in the Johnson type American Bulldog. They are low to moderate shedders, but the peak periods of hair-rich homes come with the seasonal coat change. Brushing them once or twice a week should be enough to maintain that hair shine and remove the excess hairs. Since their coat length and quality is similar to that of the Pitbull, this article on Pitbull shedding potential and more will certainly be of help. For a hair-free festive period, Santa put some tips and tricks on stopping Sheddmageddon in your sock. Regardless of their best friend potential for family members, strangers can be a point of concern for them. If you live in an apartment and there are no cattle to manage or intruders to ward off, the high energy levels of the American Bulldog will have to be spent in some other way. Out of the two most well-known types, the Scott and Johnson, the bully breed will be more individualistic and focused on work, while the standard type has a more laid-back approach to life. That is not to say the bigger version does not enjoy the occasional cuddle. An American Bulldog will not bark a lot unless there is a black French Bulldog in the house that reminds it of what it would look like in a compressed black coat format. The standard type will be a tad more responsive to dog training, but both can be trained to do most things other dog breeds of similar type can do. Socialization The challenging nature of the American Bulldog, no matter the coat color, can be kept in check if the dog receives proper socialization from puppyhood. One of their favorite pastimes is a game of tug-of-war, which will prove to be a good strength exercise for both you and your doggie. If you have other dogs in your home, the American Bulldog will be a good roommate, but only if raised alongside them. You do not need to worry about their temperament around young children. They will be protected, and the sizeable lump of a dog will be very gentle with them. Just make sure your kids know how to understand dog behavior and signals that it does not want to be bothered. Small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc. If you have the occasional deer, raccoon, or badger visit your home, then they might get the pointy end of the stick. For the black and other American Bulldog colors , there are potential congenital issues stemming from genetic mutations specific to the breed. A quick look into those will provide a more realistic portrait of what to expect when considering getting one, so let us start off with the ones most associated with the American Bulldog breed. Canine Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses CNCL Characterized as a set of debilitating progressive neurodegenerative diseases, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses are a serious genetic mutation that was discovered to affect as many as thirteen genes. Depending on which gene is affected, treatment and prognosis differ, but symptoms often overlap. The only viable diagnosis that can tell with certainty which gene underwent mutation is a DNA test. Symptoms include loss of motor function, difficulty breathing and swallowing, cognitive decline, loss of vision, and seizures. Because only one form of CNCL has somewhat effective treatment, the prognosis is usually premature death. For the one treatable type, a gene found in the Dachshund was used as a model on which to test different hormonal and enzyme therapies. Hypothyroidism A stunted production of thyroxine and triiodothyronine by the thyroid gland is called hypothyroidism. It can be caused by a tumor or have an autoimmune-mediated origin. In dogs, the latter is responsible for over ninety percent of cases of hypothyroidism. The immune system mistakes the cells of the thyroid as foreign bodies and, in the process of defending the body, it neutralizes them. With the damage to structural and functional parts of the thyroid, the production of hormones is reduced, often leading to major clinical signs. Those include lethargy, weight gain without increased appetite, degrading coat quality, increased heart rate, metabolism changes, etc. With varying degrees of severity, hypothyroidism affects nutrient absorption, body temperature control, and cognitive function in very severe cases. Although incurable, synthetic hormone therapy is an effective treatment. This is mostly a congenital disease inherited from the parents, but there have been cases where entropion was caused by injury. It is not a serious condition, and the symptoms are easy to spot. Your dog might have discharge or pus coming out of the eye, increased production of tears, and keep its eye closed eye most of the time. A full physical examination by a vet will give a final clinical picture and concrete diagnosis. Thankfully, the treatment is a routine surgery that involves restoring the skin around the eyelids to its natural and anatomically correct position. Puppies and adult dogs have different kinds of surgery because puppies do not have fully developed faces yet. American Bulldogs are more prone to the congenital variant of entropion due to the shape of their skull, eyelid length, or other anatomical factors. Cherry Eye Dogs and many other animals have a third eyelid that has a protective and functional role. It shields the eye from debris and produces watery content for eye lubrication. Cherry eye simply indicates that the gland is protruding due to inflammation. The protrusion occurs when the tissue connecting it with the lower eyelid detaches. American Bulldogs are among the breeds that are more susceptible to cherry eye, but it is not exclusive to it. Cherry eye is easy to diagnose since the protruding nictating membrane their third eyelid looks like a cherry. It will present itself as a swollen red mass and will usually be confined to the corner of the eye. Surgery of the gland is the treatment for it, and it is important to take your dog to the vet as soon as you notice a red mass in the corner of the eye. If left untreated for a prolonged period, it can swell further and cause more damage to the structural elements of the eye. Hip And Elbow Dysplasia Everyone and their dog knows about dysplasia. It is an inherited condition that causes the head of the femoral bone ball not to develop fully. Without a perfect fit into the hip bone socket , the cartilage between the two bones that provides cushion and smooth movement will become damaged and eventually completely wear off. The ball and socket will grind against each other, scraping the tissue and causing inflammation. Ultimately, the dog is going to develop arthritis, which means pain and difficulty moving. Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are used to alleviate the pain. Life Expectancy And Food For a large breed dog, the black American Bulldog and all the other shades of it is quite healthy. On average, you will share your home with one for ten to twelve years. Since the American Bulldog is prone to obesity, you should keep calories in check. The American Bulldog feeding chart is the perfect tool that can help you come up with a healthy diet for your dog. Every single treat must be accounted for in the daily calorie limit. Whether you choose to feed it high-quality kibble, wet food, home-cooked, or raw diet, it is important to manage the weight. Protein should take up most of the meals, with fatty acids omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 and vitamins and minerals filling out the rest. If you like the prospect of a raw diet, check out our American Bully raw diet article. Being similar in size and with some common lineage, you can apply the same principles to your American Bulldog. Alleles gene variants found on specific loci locations on a chromosome give instructions on how and where the pigments will be produced. For the black American Bulldog, the first locus where a decision has to be made is the E locus. Here, the decision of whether black pigment eumelanin will be allowed production is made. If there is at least one dominant gene found on the E locus, eumelanin will be produced. Next stop — the K locus. Black is the dominant color on the K locus, but the black in the American Bulldog is not produced by it. Two recessive genes are required for the decision to be passed onto the A locus. Keep in mind that a brindle American Bulldog has a brindle allele on the K locus, which is the second most dominant gene on it. From A To B Since the most common colors and patterns in the breed are determined by the A locus, the black American Bulldog has to carry two recessive genes on it. Usually, it would be white and some other marking color or fawn, but a recessive pairing is required for the full black coat. Thanks to the wide variety of interactions of the A locus with other loci, we see different patterns and colors in most American Bulldogs. One dominant gene B is enough to tip the scale in the favor of eumelanin, giving the dog a solid black coat. Not many American Bulldog breeders will breed dogs with solid black coats. Since it is not desirable for a show dog to be fully black due to the breed being predominantly white the rule is that at least fifteen percent white is required to be able to participate in conformation events. If the breeder does have black American Bulldogs, then a DNA test to rule out genetic diseases is necessary. Indeed, it is a steep price, but the amount of dog you are getting is more than worth it. Always be mindful of ads selling American Bulldog puppies for ridiculously low or high prices. This is most often the mark of a backyard breeder or a puppy mill. This is particularly the case for French Bulldog puppies, as they are the most wanted designer dog breed in the US. Another thing to note is that a black American Bulldog is not eligible for conformation shows. The Pitbull is a mix of the American Staffordshire Terrier and various other breeds from the terrier family of dogs. On the other hand, the American Bulldog is considered to be a purebred dog that has its roots in the mix of the English Bulldog and domestic dogs from the US south. You can find out more about their difference in our American Bulldog Vs. Pitbull article! Note that the American Kennel Club AKC does not recognize American Bulldogs as a distinct breed, so you are stuck with your dog participating in very few events, which mostly include work-oriented challenges. Summary Having reached the end, I only have two things to say. Black American Bulldogs are incredible dogs. Despite the breed standards, color should not play a major role in its temperament. Breeding dogs with recessive genes is a concern, but largely unfounded and lacking concrete evidence in the case of recessive black genes. If the breeder selling black American Bulldogs can provide adequate DNA test results and bloodline records, then the color makes no difference. Liking a dog for its color is not desirable, but if you like the dog first, the black coat will only be a bonus. Most importantly, stay away from shady discounts and dodgy ads to avoid paying thousands of dollars in vet bills. Stay smart, stay informed, and I will write to you in the next one. Post navigation. Our take on the Black American Bulldog is that black is just a color and it has always been around. Black was not accepted in the show ring so many people did not breed the black color. Now that Black is accepted in the show ring you see more American Bulldog Kennels breeding for it. That being said we prefer a white dog with black patches over a heavily black colored dog. Our main goal at Bull Pull American Bulldogs is to produce well structured dogs with good temperaments no matter the color. We do lean towards a more athletic dog with a bullier type without being over done and un-functional. Take a look at our dogs and accomplishments to see what we strive for. Color is the last thing you should look for when choosing to add an American Bulldog to your family. Temperament and health should be the first things you look for. But when it comes to colors our favorite color combination is a white dog with red patches but a white dog with black patches is probably a close second. Bull Pull Kennels has an up and comer named Macho Man that is an almost all white with a black ear patch. Pictures of him are at the top of this page. We will be updating information about him on our males page as he matures. Life Span Did You Know? The American Bulldog is a descendant of a generic bulldog type of dog breed brought into the region that is now the Southern United States by working-class immigrants many years ago. These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold, but can adapt to well to most climates. Some potential health conditions to be aware of in general with the American Bulldog include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid disorders, kidney disorders, bone cancer, and eye-related issues like ectropion, entropion, and cherry eye. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help allay potential concerns. One of the biggest things to know about golden retriever chihuahua mix pups is that they cannot be naturally bred; breeders of this unique mix rely on artificial insemination. In this case, the mother will always be the golden retriever, who receives the sperm from a chihuahua father. Because of the difficulty breeding this combination it will be hard to locate a breeder. Before you adopt or buy any pup, be sure to do your research and choose a reputable breeder! The best ones often have waiting lists, and they carefully breed their pooches to be the best and the healthiest. Since breeding is not typical, it can be difficult to find breeders. Do your research and make sure you find a reputable dog breeder — one that does it for the love of the animal and not the love of the dollar! Golden Retriever Chihuahua Mix Temperament Having had several dogs throughout my life, I firmly believe your pet will take on the personality of its owner. My father got me a long-haired female Chihuahua when I was 18 months old. Now, Chihuahuas were not customarily considered good pets for children, particularly toddlers. However, this puppy was the most loving gentlest dog in the world. She was my watchdog, my playmate, and most of all, my best friend. We were inseparable, and she never growled or snapped at me. Even when I accidentally broke her leg when I was holding her and running with her in the snow. However, if my mother yelled at me, this dog would growl at my mother for disciplining me. A Golden Retriever is happiest when they are with people. The Golden Chi is sure to be loving and loyal as the Golden mother and sassy and bold as the Chihuahua father. Sometimes you will be butting heads with your adorable pup if it tries to be the alpha dog! It is essential right from the start to let this dog know you are the alpha dog, as it is with any breed of dog. Dogs, by nature, are pack animals, and they all want to be the leader, but we all know the dog cannot be the leader in the household! Chihuahuas can be territorial if left to their defenses and, like a toddler, might not like to share. So it can be with the Golden Chi, and you must make sure it knows the rules right from day one. If you are planning on getting a Golden Chi as a puppy and a family dog, especially if it will be around younger children, make sure you start training from the first day. Remember, you are the alpha dog, as well as the rest of the family. Your dog should learn to take commands from all family members. Golden Chis can be very confident and playful, and you and your family can relish in and be entertained by all their fun-living and playful antics. The Golden Retriever female, on average, is 55 to 65 pounds and 21—22 inches tall, while the average male Chihuahua is 2 to 6 pounds and about 9 inches tall. You can expect an average Golden Chi to be between 15 to 30 pounds and inches tall — a lovely small to a medium-sized dog! A Golden Chi dog will reach its full adult size, usually around a year to a year and a half old. The coloring of the Golden Chihuahua mix is usually tan or golden. However, they can also be red, chocolate, white, black, fawn, or cream. All thanks to genetics. They almost always have thick fur like the Golden Retriever. And if the father was a long-haired Chihuahua, you can expect your Golden Chi to have an even denser, thicker coat of fur! Since Golden Chis are considered small to medium breed depending on their height , they are generally regarded as suitable apartment or condo dogs. However, as with most puppies, you must ensure they get plenty of outdoor exercise. The last thing you want is a bored dog, which usually leads to destructive behavior. So please make sure your dog gets adequate exercise and training. Golden Retrievers shed A LOT emitting many fibers of joy and love in addition to hair and require regular brushing and grooming. Golden chis require less brushing. While they do shed, you can get away with weekly hair brushings. It may be worthwhile to invest in a robot vacuum cleaner to keep up with any fur that they leave inside. Dental care of the Golden Chi is a different story, however. Because of the shape of their mouth, their teeth can be overcrowded, leading to plaque buildup. It is recommended to brush their teeth at least every other day. Now, remember, this breed is part Chihuahua. And Chihuahuas are known for their stubbornness. It is best to start brushing and touching their mouth at an early age. It is in your best interest to start early and often with brushing their teeth! Another challenging but necessary grooming item is nail care. Most dogs do not like getting their nails trimmed. Again, it is vital to start this at a young age, do it regularly, and make it a game. This is easier if it is done with two people — one to do the trimming and the other to do the distracting and entertaining. At a minimum, it should be done every three to four weeks. But you can tell if it needs to be done more often. When their nails feel like actual nails being hammered into your body parts, that is a sure sign that nail trimming needs to be done! It is pretty safe to say your Golden Chi will require regular daily exercise. Remember I mentioned before you do not want to have a bored dog. A bored dog is a destructive dog. A well-exercised dog leads to a happy dog and delighted dog parents! Goldens require at least two hours of daily exercise, and Chihuahuas need about 30 minutes. On average, expect your Golden Chi to require between 30 and minutes of daily exercise. A puppy chi does better with several minute exercise periods, while a mature adult chi would do fine with two minute exercise intervals. Remember, a tired dog from exercise and play is not a bored dog, and an exercised dog is a happy dog with happy parents! And speaking of exercising your Golden Chi, it is essential to socialize your Golden Chi as it is with any dog. Just remember, as I said in the beginning, I am a firm believer that a pet takes on the characteristics of its owner. So, if you are very social, your dog probably will be as well, no matter the breed. But keep in mind socialization is crucial for any dog. Introduce them to strangers, young and old, at an early age. Ensure your dog knows not to snap or snarl at someone they do not know. It is sometimes beneficial to introduce your dog to doggy daycare to learn to interact with other people and dogs. If your Golden Chi is in a household with young children, never leave a child with the dog unattended, no matter the breed. A child must learn to respect the dog, and the dog will appreciate the child. If you plan to have children sometime in the future, you should schedule times when your chi puppy can get used to youngsters. Several things must be taken into consideration. For example, is your Golden Chi closer to the lower end of nine inches tall or the higher end of twenty-four inches tall? Younger chis need more food than older ones, and more active dogs need more food than less active ones. Do they get a lot of treats throughout the day? More treats equal less food. So be careful with how many treats they get. On average, you should give your pup between one and two cups of nutritious kibble daily, ideally divided up between two feedings. As they mature, they may prefer only to eat once a day, but in the puppy stage, it is essential to eat twice a day. Treats are essential during training, but treats should happen less often once trained. If ever in doubt whether you are feeding your dog enough, consult your vet. Most vets look for a belly that is smaller than their chest, and you may be feeding them too much if they start to lose that clear indentation. Responsible pet owners take their dogs to the vet regularly, and your vet will let you know if your Golden Chi is at a good weight. Is a Golden Retriever Chihuahua Mix right for you? There is not much difference between a female or a male chi, and no two chis are ever precisely the same, but they share some of the best and most challenging characteristics of both breeds. Some of their best characteristics are that they are intelligent yet sassy, trainable, generally have good health, low to moderate maintenance, and make good family dogs. Some of the challenges you might encounter are that they are not easy to come by; therefore, they tend to be quite expensive. They can be high-energy dogs, so they must get regular exercise. They can be stubborn, yappy, and can be snappy if not put in their place at an early age, so they must be trained right from the beginning. The Golden Chi is a designer dog breed you did not know you wanted. Once you look into their eyes, they become irresistible. So, buyer, beware. Do your research, and make sure this breed is the breed for you. They are captivating, lovable, loyal, and deserve the best. If you cannot accommodate their needs, they can become a giant, costly mistake, and they do not deserve this. However, if this breed is an excellent match for you, they can be one of the best pets you will ever have in your life! Golden Chis can be very loyal companions. Love and train them well, and you will reap the rewards of this unique breed! Other Golden Retrievers Mixes. Golden Retrievers and Chihuahuas cannot breed naturally. The process of creating the Golden Chi hybrid breed is complex and expensive, so while this breed is still relatively uncommon and not highly sought after, puppies are expensive. Choosing this type of breed means that you will have to do a lot of research, not only to ensure that the breed matches your lifestyle and requirements but to find a reputable breeder. The cost of the puppies means that you may find some disreputable breeders passing other crossbreeds off as Golden Chi in a bid to make more money from their breeding. Because this breed is not purebred, they are not recognized by kennel clubs, nor are they recognized by hybrid kennel clubs. You will have to call breeders to locate one that is dealing with this breed. The rarity of the breed means that you are unlikely to find them in rescues or local shelters. If you do, ensure that you get as much history as possible, and meet the dog before you take him home with you. If you already have dogs, ensure that you introduce your existing dog to the Golden Chi before you take him home. They have an excellent sense of smell and they are keen tracking dogs. They love to swim, have plenty of energy, are intelligent and they like to please their humans. This combination means that they can be trained as service dogs, guide dogs, therapy dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Although the Golden Chi is unlikely to follow the same path, primarily because of the difficulty in breeding the line, they do retain many of these beneficial properties. Your puppy could be a keen swimmer with lots of energy and a desire to please. A purebred typically weighs around 5 lbs and is 8 inches tall. Crossing it with the Golden Retriever means that the resulting hybrid will be around three times the size, weighing a minimum of 15 lbs and standing at least 20 inches off the ground. Instead, a veterinarian has to artificially inseminate a female Golden Retriever with the sperm of a male Chihuahua. The size of the resulting breed means that it cannot be inseminated into a female chihuahua. The parents of the Golden Chi. Left: Chihuahua, Right: Golden Retriever. Expect the breed to be approximately three times the size of the Chihuahua and half the size of the Golden Retriever. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The Golden Retriever is famed for being one of the best family companion pets. He is known to love people of all ages, will love to spend time playing with older children especially, and he will enjoy any time you give him outdoors. The Chihuahua, on the other hand, is not as well as suited to life with children. He can be a bit grumpy, and if your son or daughter does not yet know how to behave around dogs, it can lead to aggression from the Chihuahua breed. It is likely that your Golden Chi will fall somewhere between these two extremes. Expect it to take time for your puppy to befriend all family members and when they do, you can bet they will become an integral and loving member of the family. Similarly, whether your Golden Chi gets along with other dogs, cats, and other furry family members, will depend on whether it takes after the Retriever or the Chihuahua. He offers the perfect compromise between these two breeds, but he may not be suitable for all families and owners. Consider the following factors before welcoming one of this breed into your home. The exact amount you feed will depend on the age and size of your dog. Active dogs also require more food. You should measure the food and provide it over two meals during the day. If you use food or treats as a training aid, take this into account when calculating how much food to give. Exercise Expect to give your hybrid at least 45 minutes of exercise a day. Walks should be sufficient, although the breed may benefit from dog agility and other canine sports classes. Training Golden Chis usually adopt the loving nature of the Retriever but the stubbornness of the Chihuahua. Unfortunately, this stubbornness does tend to prevail when it comes to training. So, while you will have an intelligent hybrid breed on your hands, they can prove difficult to train. You should attend training classes because these give you the tools to further train your dog, and they also teach some of the basic commands. Early training is especially important if you want your Golden Chi to live with children. Socialization should also be considered important, otherwise, your Golden Chi could adopt the standoff nature of the Chihuahua parent breed. They have a lot of hair, and it does tend to shed profusely. It will shed but this will be less than you would experience from a purebred Retriever. Other than a weekly brush, you should only have to deal with regular maintenance. You will also have to brush their teeth three times a week. This is especially important because poor dental hygiene is an issue with smaller breeds like the Chihuahua. Health and Conditions. Get to know the Golden Retriever When we think of the quintessential family dog, the Golden Retriever comes to mind. But did you know that these pups started out as working dogs? Adorable pure Golden Retriever dog Goldens were bred as waterfowl retrievers in 19th century Scotland. Their ability to serve alongside hunters was matched only by their mild, obedient disposition. Who knew this spunky breed had such a celebrated past? What do Golden Chis look like? Combining an itsy-bitsy, toy-sized pooch with a larger-than-life retriever is bound to come with its fair share of surprises. If your Golden Chi Retriever comes from an apple head Chihuahua, they may have a rounded skull with a pointed snout. Deer head Chihuahuas , on the other hand, could give your Golden Chi pup a longer muzzle and softer features. They often have floppy, fuzzy, Instagram-worthy ears that are usually light and dark golden. They almost always have thick fur, thanks to the Golden Retriever. But their coats will be even longer and denser if they come from a long-haired Chihuahua. Technically, Golden Chis can be golden, red, black, white, fawn, cream, or chocolate. How big is a full-grown Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix? Most Chihuahua Golden Retrievers will reach a middle-of-the-road weight by adulthood, around 15 to 30 pounds 7 to 14 kg. Goldens have a height of 21 to 24 inches 53 to 61 cm , while Chihuahuas are only 6 to 9 inches 15 to 23 cm at the shoulder. Their hybrid offspring will be somewhere within the range of 9 to 24 inches 23 to 61 cm. As a small-sized breed, the Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix will feel perfectly at home in apartments, but be sure to give them plenty of on-leash outdoor exercise. Are Golden Chihuahua mixes good or dangerous dogs? You want to get ahead of any potential problem behaviors. Chihuahuas, for example, can be territorial. Make sure your Golden Chi puppy learns how to share and respect your leadership from a young age. All is not lost, however. Speaking of homes with tiny tots, stay close by when the kiddos interact with your Golden Chihuahua. Your odds of keeping the peace go up exponentially is when you socialize your Golden Chi early and often. Take them to puppy kindergarten and doggie daycare to reinforce good manners and proper boundaries. You also want to observe your puppy and their parents before buying. Even at just a few weeks old, puppies can give you glimpses into their personalities. If you have kids or fur babies now or plan to in the future , look for a Golden Chihuahua that readily romps with its littermates. How often should you groom your Golden Chi? Golden Chihuahuas are nowhere near as high-maintenance as purebred Golden Retrievers. Between their smaller stature and shorter coats, Chihuahua Golden Retriever crosses can do without daily brushing. Although they shed all-year-round, expect heavier shedding when the seasons change. Brushing your Golden Chi once or twice a week should keep loose hair, mats, and tangles at bay. Keep an eye out for the telltale signs of irritation and infection: redness and an unpleasant odor. Dental hygiene is another non-negotiable. Golden Chis with narrow jaws are at greater risk of overcrowded teeth, contributing to plaque buildup and tooth decay. Your Golden Chi will likely stage a resistance whenever the grooming kit comes out. Over time, grooming will feel less and less scary for your pup. Be patient, and remember that the trials and triumphs of beautifying our canines are part of the experience! Exercise: how much do Golden Chis need? Purebred Goldens require at least 2 hours of exercise a day, while Chihuahuas only need about minutes. Your Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix will fall somewhere between those two extremes, depending on their energy level and physical stature. While your Golden Chi is still a puppy, pepper their day with brief walks and short play sessions at regular intervals. Once Fido reaches his mature size, you can ramp up the amount of time you exercise him but reduce the frequency. For example, you might switch minute walks around the block for a light minute jog at the dog park. You can go a little below or above this range if that suits your pup. They can help you find the caloric sweet spot for your particular pooch. Health: How long do Golden Chis live? Chihuahua Golden Retriever mixes have plenty of life ahead of them. The average lifespan for this hybrid is 11 to 15 years! Purebred Golden Retrievers are prone to both cancer and hip dysplasia. Dental issues are rampant among Chihuahuas and their hybrid relatives. Their small jaws leave them vulnerable to cavities, crowded teeth, and tooth loss. Many Golden Chis luck out and inherit only the healthiest genes from their parents. To be on the safe side, exclusively shop with breeders who can provide health certificates. You want a well-cared-for canine that comes from good stock. Where to buy a Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix puppy? The size disparity between its parents makes the breeding process cumbersome and costly. For this reason, this crossbreed is far more challenging to find than other designers Chihuahua or Golden Retriever mixes. Not every breeder wants to deal with the hassle and expense. And those who do expect to be fairly compensated. Be wary of any kennels or breeders with dirt-cheap puppies. The last thing you want is to commit your time, money, and heart to a pup from a bad breeder. Be on high alert with any sellers that seem reluctant to let you visit their facility. Trustworthy breeders should have no problem with an in-person visit. Many will go so far as to require a face-to-face meeting with potential customers. Vet-certified proof of genetic testing is another must-have. Believe it or not, a lot of mixed breeds end up in shelters for different reasons. Try to check with rescues near you once a week or so. Golden-Chi Origins The Chihuahua Chihuahuas are among the tiniest of breeds, but what they lack in size, they more than make up for in temperament. This loyal companion is zealous, fearless and always down for an adventure. Even though these dogs can be clingy and bark at seemingly random intervals, these pups consistently strive to please their owners, The Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever is by far one of the most delightful breeds you will ever come across! They are loyal, friendly and easy to train, making them an ideal addition to any family. With a striking golden coat and an eager-to-please attitude, there's no mistaking this breed for any other. As such, they make popular choices in many households. Not only do they get along easily with people, but also with other dogs, cats and children too. Highly intelligent and incredibly sociable, these dogs require regular exercise and human interaction. The Golden Chi The Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix is one of the strangest combinations of two completely different breeds out there. Even though the origin of this mix remains a mystery, both purebreds that the pup came from are fairly popular and it's easy to understand why! Because of their significant size difference, Chihuahuas and Golden Retrievers can't mate naturally - instead, it requires highly controlled artificial insemination for a successful result. The Golden Chi is not recognized by the A. Golden Chi Appearance Golden Retrievers and Chihuahuas offer a stark contrast in size, weight, and appearance, with the former being one of the largest and the latter being one of the smallest pedigree dogs. While Golden Retrievers can weigh up to 75 pounds and reach heights of 25 inches when fully grown, Chihuahuas usually stay within a pound range and max out at about 9 inches tall. These differences place them on opposite ends of the canine spectrum, yet both are incredibly affectionate animals who thrive when given human interaction and attention. A Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix is any dog owner's dream come true. The pup has a unique look, since it combines two different breeds that have vastly different characteristics. This delightful breed may have a range of physical characteristics due to the two distinct parent breeds combining DNA, from short and long coats to a wide range of colors and shades, but their personalities can be almost as unpredictable. Owning one of these animals could end up being a very unique experience that nobody else in your area has had yet! A post shared by Brittany Douglas brittany. Golden Retriever Chihuahua mixes have inherited the loyal nature of both parent breeds, so they tend to develop close friendships with other animals quickly and easily. However, some caution should be taken when introducing them to a new pet, as smaller animals may view the Golden Chi as too energetic or intimidating. With proper socialization though, these loving pups will be fast friends with any animal you bring into your home. As double-coated breeds, both Chihuahuas and Golden Retrievers require regular maintenance to keep their coats healthy and looking their best. Chihuahua Golden Retriever mixes are not hypoallergenic. Golden Chi Health Golden Retriever Chihuahua mixes typically have a lifespan of between 10 and 13 years. While Chihuahua Golden Retriever mixes may inherit some of their physical and behavioral traits from their parent breeds, they also inherit the same health issues. Dental issues Unfortunately, Golden Chis often suffer from dental issues due to genetics and their somewhat unfavorable size ratio. The larger teeth may not fit properly in the tiny mouth, making the teeth more susceptible to overcrowding and misalignment. While veterinary care at an early age is essential for providing preventative treatments for certain dental problems, owners should also be mindful of daily teeth-brushing instructions and feeding routine in order to ensure that their pup remains healthy. Osteosarcoma Golden Retriever Chihuahuas mixes are known to suffer from an aggressive form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma that has the potential to spread to other organs and drastically reduce life expectancy. It's an incredibly heartbreaking illness for any pet, and can occur at any age so it's important for owners of Golden Chis to be aware of the risk. However, with regular trips to the vet and proactive care, it's possible to identify and manage any issues early on. Hip dysplasia The condition is actually quite common in larger dogs, but also affects small breeds too, like the Chihuahua Golden Retriever mix. It occurs when the hip joint is malformed, making it difficult for them to move around or even walk. Unfortunately, there's no single thing that can prevent it from happening, so all owners must keep an eye out for symptoms such as stiffness after exercise or difficulty getting up to their feet. Grooming As a unique combination of two beloved breeds, the Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix comes with some very special grooming needs. To keep your Golden Chi's coat looking shiny, it is important to brush them at least once a week, including their legs and other areas that might be harder to reach. Bathing should also occur no more than once a month using a shampoo specifically designed for dogs. Additionally, regular checks for fleas and ticks are necessary as these pesky parasites love to set up shop on this double-coated pup! Training While the Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix provides loyalty and affection, unfortunately, it also includes some unwanted tendencies from the latter breed, such as being difficult to train. Despite their intelligence, proving stubbornness in this area tends to be a common problem. And while there are ways to work around this, it will take patience and consistency during training sessions for owners to get the desired results from their Golden-Chi. A post shared by Toffee Khawaja toffeethegoldenchi Feeding Feeding the perfect amount of food to a Golden Chihuahua mix can feel like a balancing act. Variables such as age, size and activity can throw off the ideal diet for your pup. Plus, even for purebred dogs, there is no cut-and-dry formula. However, you can achieve a good baseline with cups of dry food per day. Exercise Exercise is important for any pet, even more so for certain breeds. If you have a Golden Retriever Chihuahua mix, you'll need to determine which parent breed they most closely resemble when it comes to exercise requirements. Purebred Goldens usually need at least two hours of exercise per day while the tiny yet feisty Chihuahua requires just minutes. Male vs Female Golden Chi The differences between male and female Golden Retriever Chihuahua mixes may include the male being more aggressive and dominant. Also, depending on their parents' temperaments, female mixes can end up being aloof or overly clingy, while males tend to bond better with their humans. On the other hand, females can exhibit stronger loyalty and protectiveness for their humans than males. Long hair, brown nose, flowing long-haired tail. However, we can glean that it was probably the result of a recent crossbreed, likely sometime between the s and early s, when crossbreeding peaked in popularity in the United States. Major Marjoribanks was searching for a dog as a companion and a guardian of his luxury mansion. Thus, the first Golden Retriever litter was born. Golden Retrievers are fantastic dogs for just about anyone! Their friendly and loving nature makes them great family pets, though they may have a little too much energy for an elderly owner. The Golden Retriever was first bred in England in , as a result of a cross between a golden-colored street dog named Nous and a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The popularity of crossbreeding in the United States began in the s, peaking in the s and early s. Though the exact date when Golden Retrievers began to be crossbred is unknown, we can safely assume that people began to cross Goldens with other dogs during this time. The Chihuahua begins in Mexico and is a descendant of the ancient Techichi dog, a mute dog that was kept as a pet by the Toltec people, an Aztec tribe. Despite their impish size, the Chihuahua remains a moderately popular pet among Americans, with the American Kennel Club putting their popularity ranking at 37th. Given their size, the Chihuahua is a great pet for elderly people, without the strength to control a larger animal. They were a result of crossbreeding of unknown origin in Mexico, beginning as descendants of the Techihi dog, an ancient breed belonging to the Toltec Peoples, an Aztec tribe. The crossbreeding history of the Chihuahua is almost unknown, though, given their small size, not many people tend to cross-breed them, as there are numerous physiological boundaries to doing so. Therefore, their cross-breeding history is somewhat spotty. Making sure that you get a temperament match for you, your family and your potential adoptee will only make things easier once the dog arrives. The Golden Chi adopts some of the temperaments of both of its parent breeds. Expect an active and sometimes hyperactive dog with a small frame but feisty nature. Though it is loving and loyal to its owners, it may be somewhat standoffish with strangers. Despite their stubborn nature, the Golden Chi should be relatively easy to train, with some time and patience. The Golden Chi is a little heavier than your average Chi, weighing between 15 and 30 pounds. Given that it has Golden Retriever genes and will likely be long-haired, you can expect a light to moderate amount of shedding throughout the year. A weekly brush will help mitigate this significantly. Despite being small, they are rather energetic dogs, requiring roughly 45 minutes of exercise per day. The average life of a Golden Chi is roughly years.

German Shepherds can have three different varieties of coat: double coat, plush coat, and long haired coat. The breed standard is the double coat, which consists of dense, straight, short hair that lies close to the body. The long haired coat is also quite common among German Shepherds that are family pets. All rights reserved. The most common colouring for a German Shepherd is black and tan; however, the breed can also appear in all black. Typically the coat is predominantly tan with black facial and saddle markings. In rare instances, German Shepherds can have white, blue, or reddish brown coats. These colours are not recognized by the breed standard, but do occur periodically. In fact, the white German Shepherd is actually considered a separate breed in some areas and is called the American White Shepherd. The German Shepherd is part of the working dog classification and has a strong proportioned build. Typically, the German Shepherd is 22 to 26 inches 56 to 66 cm tall and weighs between 50 and 90 pounds 23 and 41 kg. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source It has a narrow and deep chest, and the front legs and shoulders are muscular and sloping. Its body is slightly longer than it is deep, measuring from the shoulders to the rump. Go to source German Shepherd puppies typically weigh pounds kg after the first month and will continue to grow steadily throughout their first year. By six months they will weigh approximately pounds kg. German Shepherds have very distinct pointed ears that are erect. They are long at the base and face forwards, making the shape of a triangle. As puppies, the tips of the ear may flop over slightly, but they will straighten as the dog ages. German Shepherds have a long and bushy tail that hangs down when the dog is resting. When a German Shepherd is alert or in motion, the curve of the tail is accentuated and the tail will be slightly raised. German Shepherds can be fairly aloof and reserved when first meeting new people. However, once the dog has formed a connection with their owner, they are extremely loyal. German Shepherds are usually friendly and loyal to their family, but can be protective if they feel threatened. German Shepherds are high energy dogs and they need lots of daily exercise. If a German Shepherd is left a lone for long periods of time it will likely become bored and destructive. For example, the dog may start barking, chewing things, or digging. Make sure that your German Shepherd receives at least 1 hour of exercise each day. This breed is highly intelligent and trainable. They like to have a job or task to do, and you can train a German Shepherd to do a variety of different jobs. For example, German Shepherds are often used as "working" dogs, helping with search and rescue, drug sniffing and security, as well as providing aide and assistance to the visibly impaired. This is fun and stimulating for the dog. This breed is known to herd the sheep, count them, and keep them safe. This sense of possession make them apt for guarding a family. A pet can guard when he knows what all belongs to him and what does not. This ability helps a German Shepherd to differentiate between an enemy and the family. Protection to this breed comes naturally and that's why they are known as police dogs, too. German Shepherds are fantastic with your own kids and can act strange with the strangers and other kids. If you see a dog that you think might be a German Shepherd and are curious about the breed, approach the owner and ask. It is such a cute dog. I am considering getting one. Veterinarians will be familiar with the breed standard of most dog breeds. They will be able to easily examine the physical characteristics of the dog to help with identifying the breed. A licensed breeder will be able to provide you with paperwork that proves both parents are recognized as German Shepherds by the American Kennel Club. Make sure that you always use a breeder that is licensed by the American Kennel Club. This will also help to ensure that you are purchasing a purebred dog. There are a number of applications available that can help to identify different dog breeds. In order to use the app, simply upload a photo of a dog and the app will identify the breed. Once you receive the DNA test kit in the mail, open the package and carefully read all of the instructions. The instructions will provide you with steps on how to take a DNA swab and then how to return the results to the lab for testing. The kit will likely come with two swabs. They are both to be used on the same dog. Do the same thing with each of the swabs. Place the swabs into the plastic baggies provided. Then place them in the pre-paid return envelope or box. Once sealed, mail the results to the lab for testing. Approximately three weeks after you complete the test, you will receive detailed DNA results. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

This natural process allows puppies to become independent feeders and reduces the physical demands on the mother as the puppies grow. The discomfort of nursing teething puppies may cause the mother to pull away before her puppies are completely satisfied. Hungry puppies will naturally seek an alternate source of food. Steps for Weaning Puppies To start weaning, you will remove the mother from the puppies for an hour, two to three times a day, to try eating solid food. Step 1: Make a Gruel Make a gruel of canned or dry puppy food mixed with puppy milk replacer or water. Look for a well-known, name-brand puppy food that is not grain-free. Ideally use the same brand of food that the mother dog eats. If the puppies do not take to the gruel, try blending this ratio: 2 cups of puppy food .Place the puppies in front of it. If the puppies do not seem interested, try dipping your finger in it and then touching their mouths so they can taste it. They may get messy in the process of exploring this new food. Step 3: Reunite the Puppies With Their Mother When the mother dog is reunited with her puppies, allow her to lick the remainder of the food from the dish and to lick the puppies clean. The gruel should be transitioned to less liquid and more solid until the puppies are able to eat the canned or dry food without diluting it. If a puppy is not ready, continue to offer meals in the presence of another puppy, if possible. The example of exploration with solid food will encourage this behavior. How to Feed Puppies After Weaning After the puppies are completely weaned , offer them three to four solid food meals a day until they are 6 months old, then two to three meals a day depending on their breed requirements and growth. Be sure that each puppy is gaining weight and not vomiting or having diarrhea. Seek veterinary care if problems arise. What to Feed the Mother Dog The mother dog should begin to eat puppy food during pregnancy , especially during the final two or three weeks. Consider a puppy food from the same brand that she is already accustomed to eating. She should continue eating the puppy food as she begins to nurse her puppies. Dry puppy food should be available at regular meal times. This will keep the mother dog from excessively eating it and allow the puppies to develop an appetite between meals. The demand for producing milk will decline as the puppies begin to eat solid food. With less time spent nursing, her milk production will decrease. At week four, gradually transition the mother dog back to eating regular dog food, which will also help to reduce her milk supply. By week seven or eight, her milk production will cease without the stimulation of nursing puppies once they are completely weaned. Featured Image: iStock. Wisconsin: 7 weeks Stages of development Now that you know when French Bulldogs can leave their mother, I wanted to dip a little bit into how the develop, to give you a deeper understanding of this amazing breed. It will give you some insight into how critical early care is with the mother, and how these things influence Frenchie overall growth. Weeks 1 and 2: confusion and lack of senses Newly born Frenchies are very tiny and a lot smaller than many other breeds. All they can do is to feed from the mother, sleep and poop. If you a French Bulldog puppy leaves the mother at this stage, it will almost certainly die. Handy Hint: French Bulldogs with white fur are more likely to develop hearing loss problems. Read this guide to deafness to get the inside track. In this first two weeks they adjust and respond to their surroundings, slowly opening their eyes to respond to light, crawl a little, and of course with the help of their mothers, instinctively try to feed. But mostly, they will sleep, which is very important for them at this stage. Week 3: interacting with their environment In their third week, French Bulldog puppies begin to develop their senses. Like other dog breeds, they start to explore their surroundings. They rarely sleep during this period and are seen running throughout the day. At this stage, they start recognizing humans, and can start to make strong associations and emotional connections. They might even get excited to see the breeder walking in. They are still in the early part of their development — both the puppies and mother could become distressed with too much human interaction. Any negativity at this point could affect the personalities of the whole litter, and in extreme cases can cause behavioural problems in the long term. Keep strangers at bay and to keep the French Bulldog puppies close to their siblings and mother. Week 4: social interaction In this stage, Frenchies start developing stronger connections with their siblings; this is where their social development begins. They learn how to play with their brothers and sisters. Also, at this point, the mother starts weaning them off the milk. They start learning how to become dogs at this time, with their mother being the teacher, role model, and guide. There are things happening during these weeks that mean it would be crazy to separate them. During this stage, Frenchies can be nervous about almost anything. As they begin to notice things more carefully, the world can suddenly seem like a very big and scary place. It can be a complete sensory overload, hence the nervousness — but they will adapt over time. Also, at this stage, they develop more control over their bowels and bladder and should be able to have a sounder sleep without waking up to pee all through the night. As a side note, breeders can start training the French Bulldog puppies some very basic commands like, stay, sit, and so on. Handy Hint: Learn how you can teach a French Bulldog puppy to sit with just a few simple to follow steps. You know how annoying and stressful teenagers can be? Frenchie puppies really are no different. As they become more independent, they will start to cause havoc. They will also have a tendency to bite and chew everything in their sight. Coupled with their developing rebelliousness; they can become a real nuisance. Weeks 8 to 9: French bulldogs can leave their mother At this stage, Frenchies puppies can leave the mother and siblings and go to their new forever homes. This is what Claude looked like when he first came home with us. Weaning and Sale Weaning: At 3 to 4 weeks of age, a dish of water and dish of gruel should be introduced to the pups. Feed a high quality dry puppy food, softened with warm goat milk or water to make a gruel. This can be fed in a low heavy dish 4 times daily. Gradually decrease the amount of time the pups spend with their mother at this point. Beginning at 2 weeks of age, they should be wormed with NemexR for the first time, then weekly until 2 negative fecal samples results are obtained, unless the bitch was on the PanacurR protocol during pregnancy. By 5 to 6 weeks of age, they should be weaned and eating only puppy food. From this point on, the pups will become more fun and a lot more work. It can become difficult to keep the pups confined and they can be messy and destructive. An exercise pen or playpen can be helpful. The first 3 weeks with the puppies are relatively neat and clean. Mom will lick them frequently and ingest all of their urine and feces. However, upon starting on solid food, the mom will give up this quest and you will now have to deal with excrement. There are many ways to keep the pups clean. This, with some practice, will give the pups a place to eliminate thereby keeping their bedding clean. In addition to providing bedding to allow for good footing, the shavings tray, and food and water dishes, the pups should have a bed to sleep in and acceptable chew toys. Stuffed Kongs, soft toys, and rawhides should be changed regularly to provide environmental variety and developmental stimulation. By this time, they should have increased human social contact. At 8 weeks, your pups should be examined, vaccinated, checked for worms, and wormed. Boosters should be administered every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. By 6 weeks of age, they can go outdoors with supervision for brief periods, if the weather is acceptable. Leaving The Nest: Eight to ten weeks is an ideal age socially to place pups in their new homes. The pups should have a great deal of human contact. A great challenge comes in selecting which, if any, pups are to be kept. It can be difficult to let them go out into the big world. Potential puppy buyers should be carefully screened to assure they are the right home for your pup. We recommend you sign a contract with puppy buyers. Contracting For Puppy Sales: We recommend all puppies sold be sold with a written agreement defining the details of the the sale. For example, the health guarantee and conditions of sale are topics that need to defined prior to the sale to avoid any misunderstandings. Thanks to Dr. New born puppies are very helpless. They are born blind and deaf and unable to regulate their body temperatures, so we have to use an external heat source when the puppies are not in direct contact with mom. During this time period, their mothers have to stimulate them in order for them to urinate and have bowel movements. This is a very busy time for us and we are usually very sleep deprived because we assist the mothers every 3 hours around the clock to make sure that all puppies are latching on well, growing, and being stimulated to urinate and defecate. It is a critical time in which the puppies are so small that an unaware Frenchie mother could accidentally smother one or more of her pups, so we monitor them very closely. Lacey takes a video of each litter at 3 weeks of age and posts them on our website under New Puppies so that our clients near the top of the list, as well as other clients and prospective clients, can get a early look at them. They continue to gain weight rapidly over the next several months of their lives. At two weeks age their ears open and they are able to hear, and another big part of their new world opens up. Prior to this event, about all they do is grunt or mew, but afterward their vocabulary includes yelps, whines, and even little barks. At three weeks of age the more advanced puppies start taking their first shaky steps; prior to this their basic mode of transportation is basic army crawling. They are now able to urinate and defecate on their own and will move away from their sleeping area to do so. Up to this point it is strictly the mothers and us Donna, Lacey, and Bick who have handled the pups with lots of hand sanitizing before and after and they have been kept in their kennel. Even though it is hard on the kids, we do not let them or their friends handle them until 4 weeks of age. At four weeks we start introducing them to solid food initially crushed and moistened. By the end of the 4th week they are eating their crushed puppy food, with no water added, three times a day. Because they are not nursing as long or as often, we provide fresh water for them at all times. The kids are allowed to hold them now closely monitored and with clean hands and we allow the puppies to run around and explore our large main room in the house. At 5 weeks of age they are starting to run around all over the place when they are let out to play, and, when they are in their kennels, they play sometimes rather roughly with litter mates. It is during this time when some of their adult personalities will start coming out. By the end of this week their puppy teeth are all in, and they love to chew on things, including fingers if you let them. However, even at this age, they will spend most of their time sleeping, probably close to 20 hours per day, with only short times between naps when they are alert and active. By the end of the 6th week they are completely weaned from their moms and eating solid food well. We frequently take them out of their kennels to scamper around. They are full of energy and love to play with their litter-mates and the kids. This is the time that we really focus on socializing them and we even start their paper training. By 7 weeks they have already passed through most of their puppy milestones and are continuing to grow rapidly; they are generally in the 4 to 6 pound range. This is when their personalities really start coming out! It is so fun to watch them play with the kids and their litter-mates and observe their new fascination with toys. They have become somewhat accustomed to going potty on pee pads so that when they are out running around the room they often recognize them on the floor and will go potty on them. Though they are fast, active, playful little puppies at this point in their lives, they still are like babies and require lots of sleep probably over 18 hours per day and are still quite fragile. This video will show the color and conformation of each puppy, in addition to its personality. Their their third DAPP and 2nd Bordetella vaccinations are given at 12 weeks and then a yearly booster thereafter. The rabies shot can also be given at 12 weeks no later than 16 weeks. They are also regularly de-wormed and given a medication for the prevention of coccidia and giardia. Occasionally we hold onto puppies a little longer if we do not feel they are quite ready to go to their new homes. Our clients are encouraged to come to our home to meet their fur babies if this is feasible. When this is not possible, we arrange for one of our responsible puppy chaperones to hand deliver our puppies to meet their new owners at their nearest major airport. In fact, even as adults they will sleep at least half of the day in a series of long naps, and probably closer to 14 hours per day. Have More Questions?

PetMD is operated by Chewy. Bringing home a new four-legged family member is such an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming—especially for your new puppy. When dogs are nervous, they tend to seek out small spaces to create a protective shelter for themselves. Crates are a great way to provide that safe haven for them. There are several things you can do to make the crate a safe space for your pup: Feeding meals or treats inside the crate is often seen as a reward and creates a positive association for dogs. Keeping dog toys in the crate can also provide a similar reward and positive association for pets. Adding a dog bed or blankets to the crate can make it even more comfortable although some dogs do prefer to lie on hard surfaces. This gives him enough time to digest his food and go to the bathroom one last time before bedtime so hopefully! While there are no hard and fast rules on timing, having playtime in the hours leading up to bedtime can be very helpful. The hour leading up to bedtime should be used to allow your puppy to gradually calm down, which will help him with the transition to bedtime. This gives him from p. Some great stimulating activities for puppies include: Training: Dogs love to be trained, and it provides a lot of benefits for them. Training is mentally stimulating and can be as exhausting as physical exercise. It can also help keep them safe, and the more rules dogs know, the more comfortable they tend to feel in a home. Long walks: Walks not only provide dogs with physical exercise, but all the smells are mentally stimulating for them, too. Just be sure your puppy is fully vaccinated before going for long walks in public places! Playing games: Puppies love to play games like tug of war, hide and seek, scent games, and play with puzzle toys. This should be a short outing, just long enough for him to go to the bathroom. If timed well with dinner, he will hopefully both urinate and defecate during this potty break. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help your new puppy feel more comfortable in his new home: Putting the crate in your room can help your puppy feel closer to you, while also providing him with the safe space of the crate. Typically, anxiety and stress crying occurs early in the night when your puppy is first put into his crate. If he starts crying in the middle of the night, he might need to go to the bathroom. Bringing home a new puppy is a major lifestyle change for both of you. But once the first few nights are through and your bond grows, puppies can be some of the best companions—and their love is worth all the sleepless nights. Featured Image: iStock. First day and night with puppy First day with a new puppy Your first day and night with a new puppy Getting a puppy is a really huge step for anyone and if it's your first puppy it's important to know what to expect. We've put together our tips and advice on the first 24 hours with your four-legged friend. A new member of the family is a big commitment but also really exciting. If you're a first-time puppy owner, you might have heard stories good and bad about owning a puppy. Your first day and night together will help to set the tone for your time together, so it's really important to be prepared. Our vets have put together their advice on dealing with your first day with a new puppy. Be prepared before bringing your puppy home Before you even bring your puppy home, there's a lot you can do to prepare! Remember to make sure to get all the supplies you need first - our new puppy checklist can help you decide what to get. This will be an area they can go and take naps in, chill out in when they want a bit of alone time and generally feel safe in. If you do decide to get your puppy a crate, remember they might not be used to one so you will need to take your time introducing them to it to make sure they are comfortable and happy with it. Take a look at our guide on crate training for more advice. Growing is thirsty work, after all! Ideally you want this near to their quiet area and bed. Set some ground rules Before your puppy comes home, you have some decisions to make. Will they be allowed on the sofa? Are they allowed on the bed? You need to set some rules and make sure everyone at home knows what they are — and sticks to them! Consistency is key when training any dog and your puppy will be learning all the time. Puppies will need to go to the toilet regularly, so giving them the opportunity straight away will help before they go inside. Remember to give them lots of praise or even a treat when they go to the toilet in the right place — for more information, visit our toilet training guide. When you take your puppy inside for the first time, try to take them to their space first. Too much too soon can get them over-excited or stressed, so slow introductions to new things is key. Make sure you keep your home and everyone in it! The breeder or rehoming centre can let you know when, what and how much your puppy normally eats. Offer lots of toilet time. Give your puppy the chance to go out to the toilet regularly and give them lots of praise when they go in the right place! Playtime can be OK. Short playtime sessions are absolutely fine, but remember that your pup will tire out quickly so keep them short and sweet. Naps are important. Puppies are still growing, which is tiring! Avoid walks. Your puppy is unlikely to be fully vaccinated when you first get them. Stick to supervised playtime in a secure garden, keeping them away from water sources and thick undergrowth where rats could have been. Spend lots of time together. Your puppy is always learning, so make sure you spend lots of time with them so they know they can be happy and safe around you. Pets love routine, so get your puppy into a regular routine as soon as possible! Decide where they are sleeping. Whether you plan on your puppy forever sleeping in your bedroom, or want them in a separate room, you need to start this from the beginning and stick to it. If you have your puppy in your bedroom but plan to move them into a different room at a later date, this can be really distressing for them. Keep calm. Keep bedtime as calm as possible for your pup. Give them gentle praise such as a few strokes when they settle where you want them to. Sleep in the same room for the first few nights. For the first few nights, your puppy will need time to adjust to being without their mum. Remind them of mum. Pop this where they sleep every night as it will help to comfort them and keep them calm. Night time toilet breaks may be needed. Puppies have little bodies and little bladders! For the first few weeks you might find they need a toilet break during the night. If your puppy is worried during the night, they might cry or bark. This is completely normal as they adjust to a new home and environment. When your puppy is scared, comforting them will help, but being ignored will make them feel isolated and even more frightened. Got a question? The puppy should be allowed to explore and meet his new family. You should now start teaching your puppy his name amazing because now Stetson knows his name like the back of his paw. Try again in 10 minutes. If the puppy does relieve himself in the proper area, give him lots of praise. Afterward, you may take him inside, but remember to supervise the puppy; do not let him out of your sight. Talk to your puppy when it explores to make him feel more at home. The first few nights at home may be difficult for both you and your pup. At night the puppy will feel lonely and will probably demonstrate this by whining Oh, you betcha! These are a few things that you can do that might make the puppy feel at home. We use a MidWest Life Stages Double Door Crate which comes with a divider this allows us to adjust the crate size and put a blanket over it to make it seem cozier. Keep the crate in a draft-free area next to your bed. For approximately the first three weeks, if your puppy cries, take him out, on a leash to relieving area. After relieving put him back into his crate. Do not give him any treats or any playtime. Put him right back into his crate and he should go back to sleep. Under no circumstances take the puppy to bed with you. This will form a very undesirable habit. Give the puppy a stuffed dog toy to snuggle with. Then when it was time to crate Stetson for the first night he could snuggle with the toy and smell the scent of his littermates. Our favorite and one we highly recommend is the Calmeroos Puppy Toy with heartbeat and heat pack. Our last puppy, Anna loved her Calmeroos Puppy Toy and it helped her sleep better her first night in her crate. Hold your puppy by his collar by slipping your thumb in his collar and set his food about two feet away. This should be done at every meal throughout training. Even within a breed. There are several people in our group who have raised 10 or more Labrador Retrievers in the Guide Dogs of America program and each one is different. My experience with Stetson was very difficult in the early days and weeks. I had no problem with Stetson when I first got him home. I already knew about the trials and tribulations of house training and crate training after raising my first rescue puppy, Linus. Puppies tend to piddle about every 10 to 20 minutes. You have to watch them like a hawk or they will end up using your house as their personal restroom. Stetson had some accidents here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. The agony came in the evening. Stetson did NOT take to the crate! He whined, howled, cried, and barked…probably made every noise he could possibly produce, but would not relax and go to sleep. He did sleep once in a while honestly I felt like a zombie for over a month. During those first 4 weeks, the most sleep I got was approximately 6 hours, broken up 3 or 4 times a night by whining, howling, barking…you get the picture. I was a wreck and I thought Stetson would never get used to his crate. Awww, the first night home with puppy Stetson was…sleepless… I have two words for you — consistent and patient. After about 4 weeks of consistently sticking to my guns, not letting him out of his crate, and praising him when he was quiet Stetson suddenly stopped making noise in his crate. In the long run, it pays off. Stetson has not barked, howled, or whined in months. New puppy owners often ask me where should a puppy sleep on the first night? Starting on day one we want our puppies to get used to sleeping in their crate. If we allow them to sleep elsewhere like our beds then we are reinforcing the behavior of sleeping on the bed. Therefore, trying to start them in the crate will be more difficult on day 2. Also, I want them to get used to sleeping in their crate until they are potty trained and learn the appropriate rules in our house i. Most likely he will wake up crying times at night. What happens when your puppy starts crying? Should you let your puppy cry the first night? That question is more complicated than it seems. First, as mentioned earlier we crate train our puppies. If at the end of the night our puppies start crying in the crate they will most likely settle down after about minutes of whining. Therefore, yes we let our puppies cry. Second, if our puppy wakes up in the middle of the night and starts crying we take him immediately to his potty spot. After he goes potty we take him straight back to his crate to go back to sleep. This generally happens times a night. Those are the two most likely crying scenarios with your puppy. However, there are an infinite number of other possibilities for puppies crying in the crate on the first night. Should you leave your puppy alone on the first night? I sleep about a foot away from my puppy in my own bed, puppy in his crate. If I feel like my puppy is experiencing some anxiety on his first nights home I will also sometimes sleep on the floor for a few nights and slowly start to migrate back to my bed. This is the question I fear when I bring home a puppy. The answer is it depends, every puppy is different. However, you probably want to know what I consider normal for how long a puppy will cry at night? At which point he will likely settle down and go to sleep. Over the next 8 hours, most puppies will wake up times and will need to go outside and potty. When you get back from the potty break most puppies will cry for another minutes before they go back to sleep. After about 8 hours of sleep, your puppy will want to wake up and eat breakfast. As I mentioned earlier, all of my puppies sleep in their crate on the first night. This calls for a story: Many years ago, I talked to a friend who allowed her puppy to sleep in her bed. She cleaned up the mess but could still smell poop. Check out our New Puppy Checklist. Get a good book on raising and training a puppy like Puppies for Dummies. Let him get comfortable in his new environment. Start training your puppy immediately with basics like potty training, name, and crate. Always supervise your puppy. Use a small crate near your bed. Give your puppy a stuffed dog toy to snuggle with. Be consistent, persistent, and patient when training your puppy. The first night with a puppy is often a sleepless night. On the other hand, if you get a homesick puppy then you might have to endure a night possibly several nights of barking, howling, crying, and yelping puppy. Hopefully, you get the latter and are only disturbed a few times in your nightly slumber. Good luck! Tell us your experiences in the comment section below. Related Article. Have you ever found yourself trying to sleep with the crying Pug puppy at night? Then this article is for you. Why is Your Pug Puppy Crying? Hearing your Pug puppy whine or cry at night is enough to break your heart. They need to get used to their new surroundings. Pug puppies cry and whine as a natural alarm system to call out for help. Puppies removed earlier from their Mom and litter may have separation anxiety issues. This can result in crying at night. If your breeder wants to keep your puppy for 12 weeks before you pick her up, please wait. Please wait. The breeder knows those extra few weeks is what is best for the pup. That time can reduce behavioral and mental health in the future. Even if you bring your Pug puppy home after eight weeks, she will still miss her Pug Mom and littermates. Pug puppies will cry and whine when they feel this way. When you first bring your Pug puppy home, try to take some time off from work. Spend a lot of time with him during the day to try to ward off loneliness. Also, a tired Pug puppy may sleep better at night. Your Pup is Scared They may feel scared, and it may take a while to settle into their new environment. Put your puppy in a crate next to your bed. Pug puppies cry and whine when scared. Having them next to your bed may help. Loud wind, noises, or the sound of rain may also scare your puppy. Some suggest putting a windup clock under their pillow to hear the ticking. That may give your puppy some comfort. Once in their bed, they may realize they need to go. Also, Pug puppies have tiny bladders. My little Lulu did until she was about eight months old. Once her body started to develop, she no longer needed to go out in the middle of the night. Most of the time, puppies will not pee where they sleep. Although Pug puppies cry and whine to get out in the middle of the night, it helps with potty training. Most Pugs would love a delicious snack day or night. Giving them a snack may only train them to cry more. If whining and crying once brought them a snack, why not try it again and again? Be sure your Pug puppy has a water bowl out all during the day. Encourage a small drink before bed, but they may refuse. The place might be uncomfortable, too hot, too cold, or too bright for him. Make sure your puppy is in a dark room around 70 degrees. Be sure he has a nice comfortable blanket or pillow to sleep on. You may decide to let him sleep with you once he is potty-trained. When my Mimi was almost potty-trained, I used to think she would be OK to sleep in the bed with me. Unfortunately, I spent some mornings washing sheets. Finally, I went back to putting her into her crate until she was fully potty-trained. Given a choice between peeing outside on the ground in the cold weather or in a toasty room with soft blankets, well… you know how that went. Your Pug Puppy gets Bored at Night Pug puppies need enough exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and relaxed. When they do not get enough exercise, they show a lot of extra energy at night. Pug puppies cry and whine out of boredom and maybe part of its way of burning energy. During the day, spend a lot of time with your pup and give him a lot of attention. Play catch and give him a lot of verbal praise. Should you Ignore a Whining Pug Pup? Little pups think that if they call for help, someone will quickly locate them. Try to understand the underlying cause of your Pug puppy crying and whining. Your Pug puppy is maybe in a stage where he learns how to communicate his needs and wants. Pug puppies generally whine to get attention and food from their parents. Avoid unintentionally encouraging your dog to whine. Encouraging whining lead to a pup that whines excessively. Even reaching down to pet your Pug or speaking soothing words can be an encouragement to whine more. Try to keep them in the room with you at night. Are you worried about your whining Pug pup? The good news is that you can train your puppy to whine less. If your Pug puppy is crying at night, there are many ways to calm him. The goal is to have a relaxed, self-assured puppy and can be left alone for the night. You can try to keep them in a crate. Even though your puppy might resist this idea in the beginning, but dog crates can be lifesavers. A crate offers your puppy a sense of safety and security. The ideal food for your Pug is the one that ensures all the nutrients your dog needs for growth and development. If you get a Pug puppy, be certain you are feeding puppy food. They have different nutritional needs than adult dogs do. Also, ask your breeder what she is feeding the pups. Then transition your puppy from her dog food to the one that you would like him to eat. Tailor the puppy food to meet their needs. Avoid saying emotional goodbyes and try to have a low-key departure and arrival. Puppies can be emotional sponges and soak up everything you are feeling. Long, emotional goodnights or goodbyes can create anxiety for your pup. A Pug puppy with pent up physical or emotional energy is more likely to cry and whine. You must make sure to take care of the following things before you leave your puppy at night: Feed your puppy before you leave. Pugs are greedy eaters and become satisfied when they are full. Provide sufficient exercise and social interaction. This will reduce their destructive behavior. Give your pup chew toys and other interactive toys like puzzles and kongs while you are away at night. This will distract them and keep them busy while they are alone. Keep dangerous things out of the reach of your Pug puppy. The daily workout will potentially help him get rid of the excess energy that he has. Spend time playing brain games and doing obedience training with them. Eventually, without your interaction, he will fall asleep. Establish a Positive Reinforcement Protocol Rewards like treats, playtime, and chew toys are the motivators for your Pug puppy. During the day, you can reward your Pug for not crying and showing some independence. Never punish your Pug puppy for whining or crying as this may make a fearful or anxious pup become even more so. Punishments, yelling, and harsh behavior can lead to aggressive behavior. Talk to a good trainer about this and how to deal with separation anxiety. It will save them from crying and whining. Again, puppies taken from their Pug Mom too early may have difficulty being able to self-soothe. Follow these simple steps to teach your Pug to stay alone for longer periods of time: Have your Pug stay in a small, confined area with a chew toy. Then quietly leave the room. If quiet, return immediately. Praise your Pug and perhaps give them a treat. Repeat and slowly increase the time you are away each time. If you get your Pug to a point where he is happy being left for an hour, he should be fine at night. Here are some ideas for a calming bedtime routine: Give them a Treat Give your puppy a tasty treat at bedtime. It will provide him with something special to look forward to. They will associate sleep time with a yummy snack. Give them a Good Place to Sleep You must provide a cozy and comfortable place for their sleeping. Make it cozy, so they feel secure and cry and whine less. Give them favorite toys Pug pups can also develop an association with a special toy. Give them safe toys to feel at home. When I brought Lulu home, she loved this fried egg toy the breeder gave her. The toy had been with her and her littermates, and she played with it a long time. Help them Calm with a Dog Aromatherapy Some scents can have a calming effect on your little tail-wagging pals. Spend a little calm time with your Pug dog before going to bed. It will take time to completely rid your Pug puppy of the habit of crying and whining. The important thing is to cope with it until he feels safe and does not whine anymore. Also, do not encourage it by responding to him in any way: positive or negative. Remember, when you bring home a Pug puppy, you are committing to a long-term relationship. You will eventually be able to stop your Pug puppy from crying at night. Be patient and determined to make it work. All dogs are social creatures and love companionship. Pugs are even more social than most breeds. They have been bred to be part of your family. It is important to dedicate quality time to your little furry buddy and ensure that their needs are met. Meeting his needs will help them to become well-rounded and socially healthy dogs. Before you know it, your puppy will be potty-trained and in the bed with you like the majority of Pug owners do. Upcoming Litters What customers say about our puppies "Dedicated to a fault is only one way I would describe her, there are so many positives.Dedication, patience, and caring are truly not strong enough words. Audrey and I discussed her breeding line and I was most impressed! She took the time to explain her dog's lines, what some of them had gone on to do : police, detection, protections, pets - it was impressive. I was beyond happy that Audrey not only had the experience, but also had the educational degrees to back up what she was saying. I did not meet Audrey when this litter was born but instead there were a few male puppies available black and sable but none had been actually chosen yet. Audrey put me down for a sable male per my request. I knew I would not see whatever puppy was to be mine except through videos, pictures, etc….She would send videos, pictures, and just general updates. Audrey was always available and responded quickly to any correspondence. I sometimes wondered when she slept with all these clients and pups. Dedicated to a fault is only one way I would describe her, there are so many positives. One day Audrey sent a particular video and I fell in love. It is the fairest way to allow clients to choose. Audrey and I continued to correspond sometimes daily and she was amazing. A day or so later, Audrey let me know that this little guy was mine. I believe that Audrey does everything within her power to ensure that clients do receive the puppy they want if the fit is correct. Now, we had to transport this little man. Audrey and I communicated a lot! I had never had a puppy brought to my door physically unseen. This was completely new to me yet, I know dogs are flown all over the world. Together, Audrey and I navigated this last leg of the journey and I could not have asked for more from her. Dedication, patience, and caring are truly not strong enough words to use when describing how Audrey was during this process. Audrey ended up keeping my pup who was named Malachi for an extra week. While he was there, she taught him his name and sent pictures and videos often. They certainly made my day! Since Malachi has arrived home, he is nothing short of amazing! He is exactly as Audrey described him and the litter Daisy x Maverick focused, well behaved, eager to learn, and dark stunning sable! Exactly what a great breeder should do. My experience with North Mountain Kennels was wonderful. If you are looking for a well bred high quality working German Shepherd l highly recommend North Mountain Kennels. Audrey is in a class all of her own and I am grateful that the stars aligned so that I was able to be blessed with one of her pups. He is a true gift and I look forward to all the days ahead with him. Thank you Audrey! Currently Available Puppies.
