There is a lot of talk about black Boxers dogs; some potential puppy buyers will actively seek out this colored puppy, but their searching is in vain. It may be hard to believe it when you see photos, but black boxers do not exist — the color gene responsible for black coat color does not exist within the breed. Brindle is a pattern of color, it is a striping effect. With most brindle Boxers, the dark stripes are clearly over a fawn background. However, with Boxer dogs that appear to have a black coat, this is due to super heavy reserve brindling. In fact, it can be so dark and so thick, that you cannot see any fawn beneath it. This gives the dog a very dark coat that does indeed appear to be black. Here, we'll go into the facts a bit more to talk about why black cannot exist with the breed and some myths are swirl about regarding this perceived coat color. Why Colors are Misinterpreted It is very easy to see a dog and immediately assume that he is a certain color, based on what your eyes are telling you. However, with some breeds, the Boxer included, you must take a second look. It is sometimes only when you realize how brindle can cause an effect of sorts, that makes a first impression of black, that it starts to make sense. In addition, some Boxers are given the term of black; however, in many cases, this is a shortened term that comes from longer 'black brindle'. The base color of all purebred Boxers is fawn. Brindles are actually fawn with a brindle marking. Those markings are made of a pattern for fur consisting of black striping which covers the fawn… Sometimes just a bit lightly brindled and sometimes a lot a heavily brindled dog. A black Boxer with white flash? Your eyes are playing tricks on you. This pup is super dark reverse brindle with white markings. Cassandra, 5 months old Photo couresty of Christopher Many wonder if perhaps there were black Boxers that were mostly bred out of the lines and that perhaps now and again a dog with a black coat shows up somewhere. However, if we look to the record keeping of the past century, we can see that this is not the case. In this year time period, a black Boxer appeared once, however there is a catch to this. In the Germany, in the late 's a Boxer was paired with a mixed dog that was part Bulldog and part Schnauzer. The resulting litter had puppies that had black coats. Since another breed was introduced into the bloodline, they were not purebreds. These dogs were not used for any further breeding and therefore did not have any influence on genetics going forward. Once in a while there will be a breeder that claims to have black Boxers and will point to this one incident long ago as evidence that black does indeed run in the bloodline. However, since those mixed dogs with black coats were never used for any sort of develop program this simply does not hold true. Another element that shows that this coloring does not exist in the Boxer line is the rule that the Munich Boxer Club created in .This group had stringent control over breeding and development of Boxers in Germany and set the guidelines for the standard, conformation and all elements regarding appearance including coloring. This group did not wish for any experimenting to be done that would introduce the color black and for this reason they made a clear rule that black Boxers would not be accepted. Some make the argument that programs may have ignored this ruling and still attempted to breed black Boxers. However it would have not been in their best interest to do so and additionally, any resulting dogs would have not been part of the Munich Boxer Club since they couldn't have been registered there. This means that any such hypothetical dogs could not have genetically been included in the Boxer's bloodline since they would have been barred from any programs that were developing and perfecting the breed. So, now that we know: This color does not exist in the line The only record of any black Boxer in the last century was a mixed dog and not a purebred Guidelines and strict rules of of the club in Munich that was the foundation of today's Boxers clearly excluded black Boxers. And it is also fair to say: The chance of there being some odd, rare gene mutation that brings black into the coat is extraordinarily rare; mathematically the odds are so low that this can be ruled out Black Boxer puppies cannot be born due to a hidden gene; this is because black is dominant over all other colors. It cannot be recessive, it always comes out over others Why are some people still adamant that this coloring exists? Diesel, at 2 years old Photo courtesy of Brittany Calvert This leads us to the conclusion of only two possibilities in this regard: A 'true' black Boxer simply cannot be a purebred. It is assumed that in this case, it would be done to sell the pups at a higher cost. Some elements to ponder.Their registration papers do not have that color code as an option. Therefore, even if someone verbally dubs a Boxer to have a black coat, the dog - if registered with a recognized club - would officially be another color; and that would most likely be brindle. Since the pup would be handed over to new owners with papers stating he was not black, how can they simultaneously claim to have black Boxer dogs? And this of course, is very unethical. In Summary Every being whether it is a mammal, like a dog, human, etc. These genes determine everything about the being, from skin color to the number legs to where the eyes are.Genes control coat color in dogs, too. In order for a dog to be black, that breed of dog must contain the gene for having a black coat. Boxer dogs do not have that gene. So, there cannot be any black Boxer dogs. It is genetically impossible. A Boxer that is black, or true black with brown points, for example, MUST be a mixed breed or a heavily brindled dog. What is a Boxer? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Do your research and ask lots of questions to ensure you find a responsible and reputable breeder who meets your needs. It is possible to find a free Golden Retriever puppy in South Carolina, but it is not recommended. Free puppies are often found through online classifieds or from breeders who are looking to unload extra puppies. These puppies might be from accidental litters, Puppy Mills, or pet stores. These breeders have been vetted by our team and provide high-quality golden retrievers. You can also ask friends or family members who have purchased a Golden Retriever from a breeder in the past for recommendations. Once you have a few names, do some online research to learn more about each of them. Call potential breeders and ask them lots of questions. Some questions you might want to ask include: How long have they been breeding Golden Retrievers? Do they have any health guarantees? What kind of testing do they do on their dogs? Are the puppies socialized? How much support do they offer after the sale is final? Are the parents of the puppies registered with AKC? How many litters per year do they produce? The answers to these questions can help you determine if a breeder is responsible and reputable. Be sure to ask as many questions as you need in order to make an informed decision. When you find a breeder that you feel comfortable with, go and visit their facility. This will give you a chance to see the puppies and the parents up close. It will also allow you to meet the breeder and ask any final questions. Visiting your breeder in person will allow you to see the conditions the puppies are being raised in, as well as how well the parents are taken care of. If you do not feel comfortable with the breeder after your visit, it is best to move on and find another one. A good breeder will be happy to answer any questions and provide you with information about the puppies. A good breeder will be happy to provide you with references from previous buyers. References can also help you determine if the breeder is reputable and reliable. If a breeder does not want to provide you with references, it is best to move on and find another one. This will give you a chance to ask them about their experience with the breeder. Past customers will be able to tell you if the breeder is reputable and if they took care of their dog. If you cannot meet past customers, the breeder should be able to provide you with references. These references can be from other people who have purchased puppies from the breeder, or they could be from veterinarians or dog trainers. When looking for a South Carolina golden retriever breeder, it is important to ask them if they have a good veterinarian that they use. This is because your puppy will need routine veterinary care, and you want to make sure that your breeder has a good relationship with a veterinarian. If the breeder does not offer a health guarantee, you may want to consider finding another breeder. A good health guarantee is important, as it ensures that your puppy will be healthy. Golden Retrievers make great pets, and with the right breeder, you can rest assured that your puppy will be healthy and happy. Here is some information about us and our kennel. Where we are We are a family owned and operated kennel located on 10 beautiful acres in Southern Manitoba, Canada about 30 minutes North of the U. We are approximately 1 hr from the Winnipeg International Airport and have been very successful in shipping pups across Canada and the United States. Until now, we have been breeding Labrador Retrievers and after much research, decided that Labradoodles and Goldendoodles would be a great addition to our existing family. One of the 6 runs is the "puppy pen" which is a 10 ft x 6 ft indoor run with a 20 ft x 25 ft outdoor run complete with a doghouse for the pups to play in, a rubber tire to climb into, a turtle shade cover to wrestle under, a wading pool depending on the season, of course and lots of toys to chew on. Maverick Goldendoodle TLC and Socialization We find it necessary to have the pups in our home when they are first born, so that we can keep a close eye on them and the dam to make sure that all the pups are progressing well. We also weigh the pups almost everyday during the first 2 weeks to make sure that they are gaining sufficient weight. We usually have the vet come down to check the pups when they are about 2 weeks old and again at 6 or 7 weeks. We spend a lot of our time with the puppies, as do our children, Riley 6 and Janelle 4. Our children take great delight in playing with the puppies and falling in love with each and every one of them. None of the pups leave our kennel being shy or aggressive, we take pride in caring for them all as individuals before they move on to their new homes. Alex with Sonny at 4 months Labradoodle Labradoodle puppy Puppy Housing When the dams are near their due dates they are brought into the house where we have birthing rooms set up for them. The dams and pups then stay in the house with us until they are about 4 weeks old, or until we are certain that they are ready for the move into the kennel. They are then housed with their mother until they are weaned and later moved into the "puppy pen". We like to know about our adoptive families before a pup moves on because we want to provide our pups with the very best homes possible. We do check-up on the pup and it's new family, often via phone or e-mail and are always willing to answer any questions or give advice. They are descended from breeds brought over from England including the Bloodhound, which is still evident today. There seems to be some debate as to whether they were first bred for their golden coats or their intelligence — but what we do know is that this breed has lived up to both expectations. These dogs were bred from a flat-coated Retriever and a Tweed Water Spaniel in an attempt to produce a breed that can excel in waterfowl hunting. In Lord Tweedmouth decided to take his new breed under his wing by crossing white Retrievers with Irish Setters, producing a chestnut dog that came to be known as Lassie. One of their puppies, a male named Nous II, was mated with his half-sister Belle to produce four black retrievers. In , the first two Golden Retrievers were brought from Scotland to England. The English aristocracy quickly accepted these new dogs and soon began to spread throughout other parts of Europe as well as America. By , the Golden Retriever caught on with other hunters in Canada and the United States and was officially recognized by both countries as an official breed. Today, this smart and loyal dog is enjoyed all over the world as a companion animal for many families. The Golden Retrievers stood on their own by despite some arguments about their naming. The Golden Retriever Club was established in with the first standard being written shortly after that representing what this breed is all about today. Some of the early members of this club went to America to popularize the breed there as well which finally led to its recognition by AKC in .Goldens became extremely popular among dog owners who liked them for their gentle temperaments, intelligence, and trainability as well as great skills in serving as guide dogs, hunting dogs, rescue, or therapy dogs. The shoulders are long and well-muscled. The topline is level, hips are broad, tuck-up is present, stifles are angled and hocks are well let down. The skull has a slight curvature that appears domed from the side when viewed in profile. Its muzzle should be equal to or slightly shorter than the skull in length. The nose of the Golden Retriever is broad with an impressive black nostril rim on either side of the nose. It has strong teeth with a scissors bite being preferred. The tail is golden with thick feathering that tapers to a point and reaches the hock joint. This breed always has brilliant amber eyes, rich mahogany to deep brown nose, and lips. Females are generally smaller than males as they stand between 20 to 23 inches and weigh from 50 to 65 pounds. Males also have a bigger head, a wider chest, and a longer muzzle compared with females who tend to be slightly more athletic. Golden Retrievers have a weather-resistant double coat which is water repellent — very thick, moderately long, and somewhat wavy, allowing them to do well in cold weather conditions where they need extra insulation. A flat or wavy coat represents disqualification in shows while all other markings are taken into account only when deciding championships or obedience titles. Their most common color is golden but some may show up with brown, cream, or red coats that are rather light to dark. Their coat color is genetically controlled by recessive genes so it will be the same for both the parents and their puppies under normal conditions. It is flat or slightly wavy but never curly, growing to about two inches in length on the back and sides of the body. The fur on its face, ears, front of legs, belly, chest as well as inside its feet are short and dense which makes them water-repellent. They have a shorter coat on their head and the inner part of the ears, giving them a smooth appearance. The hair on its tail grows up to four inches long and is feathered — the base of the tail has a lot of hair that gradually thins out as it reaches the end. If a Golden Retriever has any other color, it will be disqualified from entry to competitions. Retrievers should also not have curly hair as this is a disqualification in shows. Golden Retriever Lifespan The average lifespan of this dog breed is 10 to 12 years. Characteristics of Golden Retrievers A Golden Retriever is highly active and very friendly, both toward other people and animals. They do well with kids and adults alike and love to play around with their friends family members however; they need enough exercise for burning off pent-up energy or else boredom may cause them to develop some destructive habits such as chewing clothes or shoes, digging holes in the backyard, and barking to get your attention. Generally, however, they are very good family pets that have a childlike innocence about them. These dogs are very sensitive to harsh tones of voice so they need to be trained in at least a slightly soft manner without any yelling or other playful tricks that may scare them which would lead to loss of trust. Retinal atrophy A condition where the retina of the eye slowly degenerates into a thin layer and causes partial or complete blindness. It is not painful and is caused by genetic abnormalities, general illness or trauma. Progressive retinal atrophy occurs later in life and can be either inherited rare or acquired common. Hereditary cataracts A congenital disorder is characterized by faulty development of a part in the eye called the lens, causing blurred vision and potential blindness. This may be inherited or acquired later on in life due to illness, trauma, poisoning, or age-related changes. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA An incurable degenerative disease where photoreceptors fail to function properly and night blindness occurs first followed by complete loss of sight within months to years. Inherited from parents as an autosomal dominant trait when only one parent carries the PRA gene. Elongated soft palate ESP An abnormality of the throat where the soft tissue structures of the mouth and throat are longer than normal, leading to breathing difficulties and a clicking sound when breathing. This is more common in brachycephalic breeds such as pugs, bulldogs, Cairn terriers, Pekingese, and Boston terriers. Prognosis is poor because it may interfere with eating if airway passages remain obstructed. Surgery is required. In dogs, this is a common occurrence and one or both of the testicles may not descend into their rightful position within the scrotum, causing sterility among male dogs. It is also an indicator for possible infertility in stud dogs as well as increased risk for testicular cancer later on in life due to lack of proper heat insulation. Surgery is required for affected individuals. Both types are painful and require surgery to correct. Ectropion is more serious because loose skin around the eyes can be prone to infection as well as irritation, especially during hot and humid days. This incurable lethal autosomal dominant condition only appears when both parents are carriers of the gene. Osteogenesis imperfecta — brittle bones A well-known hereditary defect found in toy dog breeds such as pugs, Boston terriers, Pekingese, and Chihuahuas where there is a defect in the mineralization process making bones very brittle and likely to break under stress or trauma. Surgery may be required if bone fragments are left in place after the initial fracture or if secondary complications arise during the healing process due to bone fragments. Prader-Willi syndrome An incurable disease where the hypothalamus region of the brain is partially missing, leading to obesity and other health problems. Puppies are normal at birth but start gaining weight rapidly after a few weeks due to an unregulated appetite that does not stop even when full. It has no effect on intelligence or behavior. Nails should be clipped when necessary and ears should be cleaned once per week using baby wipes for this breed to prevent ear infections. Feeding Requirements for Golden Retriever Dogs Golden Retrievers are energetic dogs at heart so their food intake needs to be high to keep them healthy and fit. Due to limited number of fosters, Luddy is being fostered with several other foster dogs of all sizes and we are looking to spread these fosters out to more foster homes where they can get more individualized attention. Cats are a little too interesting to Luddy, so a home without cats would be best for him. Select from the options below to view adoptable puppies and dogs in Jackson, Alabama and nearby cities. This boy is absolutely one of the sweetest male dogs I have ever met! He he loves every single dog he meets! He was this way even before his neuter. Tannehill was surrendered to us Saturday at Bark in the Park by a precious woman who saved him when he was dying from infection after being attacked by another dog. Tannehill just wanted to be friends and play with every dog he met! Even the ones that snapped at him! He is a true Lover, not a fighter! Tannehill is a senior boy, around years old at least, but he has lots of energy and life left in him! He is fully vaccinated now, neutered, on monthly prevention, and microchipped. Sadly, he was mild positive for heartworms. He has now been treated for those and is finally heartworm negative and completely healthy, other than some mild cataracts. Bless him. Tannehill would be a great family dog, because he loves kids too, or a great companion for an older person. Ideally, he needs a dog friend in his new home. He is crate trained and loves to lay on his bed in his crate with the door open. If you are interested in adopting this precious, sweet boy, please reach out to at .You may email us at southernpawsanimalrescue gmail. Share on Twitter I have a love for pets. I grew up with a German Sheppard and a Boston Terrier. In my adult life, I had a Jack Russell Terrier. Also, you can add birds and fish to the list of pets too. So anytime I hear about animals being abused or abandoned it breaks my heart. Can you imagine this? You find a decent-sized bag hanging on a bush near a mailbox with 9 newborn puppies inside. This actually happened in the West End of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and that mailbox belonged to the Carnes family. Carnes heard faint cries in the early evening which he thought was a kitten. He was shocked to discover 9 lifeless puppies on the coldest night we have had all season. Xan Pugh Carnes said she is no stranger to people leaving their animals at her home. The last dog that was abandoned was beaten, burned, had worms, and was very sick. I truly believe everything happens for a reason. The person that left those puppies to die in the recent frigid temperatures is another discussion about pet abonnement. Mind you these puppies still had their umbilical cords attached and their eyes were closed. However, the person left those animals in the right place because Carnes went out of her way to help. She saved those puppies. Get our free mobile app Through her friend Dale and some Facebook networking, they were able to rescue and place the 9 puppies with a neonatal rescue service in Anniston, Alabama. While they were traveling, her 3-year-old daughter was holding some of the puppies to give them warmth and comfort. The puppies are being cared for by Amanda Krug with Neonatal Rescue, She has been involved with rescue animals with her mom since a young age. They specialized with rescues animals with cleft palates which they have to be tube-fed and she loves helping pregnant dogs. Her mother passed in and she keeps her memory alive through working with animal rescue. However, one did pass away. This is a true act of kindness. Thank you, Xan and Amanda, for going the extra mile to help animals in need. You are some great Alabama Angels.
